Mamata Storms Out Over Band Entry Row at Raj Bhavan Event
Kolkata : West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee exploded in fury on Sunday when she found the Kolkata Police band was barred entry to perform at At Home, a ceremonial reception hosted by Governor CV Ananda Bose at Raj Bhavan on the occasion of the Republic Day. She made the public outburst after she met the governor during the afternoon event as per custom and stormed out of the venue at the eastern lawn of Raj Bhavan with state chief secretary Manoj Pant, state director general of police Rajeev Kumar and other senior officials of her government. Ms Banerjee however stayed inside. She was fuming as a Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) band was playing various patriotic numbers in front of the gathering since the start of the event while the Kolkata Police band, which has performed traditionally at the event every year, was kept outside the enclosure. When Sandeep Kumar Singh, an officer on special duty to the governor, met the CM, Ms Banerjee told him angrily, The Kolkata Police band is not performing. Why? The SSB is performing there. Do you like to satisfy the central government like this? She added, The Governor House is under the state government. Please remember, you can not neglect the Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police. If they (band) don't get to perform, I won't return to the event. The CM then rebuked Mr Kumar, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and state home secretary Nandini Chakraborty for inaction. She also ordered that her government would shoot a letter of protest over the incident to the governor. Following her protest, the city police band was allowed entry to perform during the remaining part of the event. Ms Banerjee also returned to the event. Late evening, Raj Bhavan issued a clarification containing the statement of Mr Singh who said, In the At Home, Raj Bhavan, the Kolkata Police bandset was assigned space different from the usual practice. When this was pointed out, I intervened and called the Police bandset and gave them a suitable place where they continued to perform. He added, I also explained it to the Honble Chief Minister and she listened to the Band for sometime. When I reported this to the Honble Governor, he ordered that any departure from precedence on ceremonial occasions should be done only with the prior approval of the Chief of Staff.

CM Revanth Launches Welfare Schemes in Narayanpet
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Sunday launched four major welfare schemes and reiterated that the Congress was committed to implementing more such programmes for poor and middle-class families, He was speaking after launched the Rythu Bharosa, Indiramma Atmiya Bharosa, Indiramma Indlu and ration cards scheme at Chandravancha of Kosgi mandal in Narayanpet district. Revanth Reddy said that the Congress and farmers shared a bond, and the government initiated several schemes related to farmers and the poor. He said the Congress had created history by waiving Rs.72,000 crore of farmers loans during the UPA-II government at the Centre. The late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy had introduced farmer's friendly schemes. Eligible people will get text messages about funds under Rythu Bharosa and Indiramma Atmiya Bharosa from midnight of Sunday, the Chief Minister said and added that all eligible persons would be getting the benefits by March 31. When the BRS was in power, it completely failed to redress the people's issues and had not provided a single ration card to eligible candidates. After the Congress came to power, government officials started visiting villages to get a list of issues facing the people. However, the BRS is deliberately creating ruckus by causing disturbances. during grama sabhas, Revanth Reddy alleged. Finding fault with Opposition leader K. Chandrashekar Rao for not attending Assembly sessions to discuss measures to develop Telangana, the Chief Minister alleged that BRS activists had attacked government officials who wanted to set up an industrial park in Lagcharla. Explaining about the new schemes, the Chief Minister said that 70 lakh farmers would get Rs.12,000 per year under the Rythu Bharosa. In a first phase, Rs.6,000 would be deposited to farmers accounts from the midnight of Sunday and a total Rs.20,000 crore has been sanctioned for the scheme implementation. Under the Indiramma Atmiya Bharosa, landless women will get the amount of Rs.12,000 per year and 30 lakh families will benefit. After midnight on Sunday, the eligible candidates will get the amount deposited into their bank accounts, Revanth Reddy said. Revanth Reddy stated that during his padayatra ahead of the elections, he had received a number of complaints from poor people due to lack of houses. Keeping in mind these complaints, the government had launched Indiramma houses. The government would provide Rs.5 lakh to each beneficiary and was committed to construct 4.5 lakh houses. Similarly, the government received applications from poor people for ration cards, and the process of allotting them would be completed by March 31. In every Assembly constituency, at least 3,400 houses would be constructed under the Indiramma housing scheme in a phased manner.

Ex-MLA, legislator arrested after attacking each other's offices in Roorkee, waving pistols
DEHRADUN: The rivalry between former BJP MLA from Laksar Kunwar Pranav Singh 'Champion' and Independent MLA from Khanpur Umesh Kumar took a violent turn on Sunday when both of them allegedly attacked each other's offices along with dozens of their supporters following the announcement of local body election results in Uttarakhand. On Sunday evening, Champion created a ruckus at Kumar's Roorkee office along with his supporters and fired several rounds in the air. As soon as Kumar learned about Champion's ruckus and firing at his office, he reached Champion's office along with his supporters and created commotion in a similar manner. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the police intervening and taking Kunwar Pranav 'Champion' into custody. Later MLA Umesh Kumar was also detained by authorities for allegedly orchestrating a retaliatory attack at 'Champion's' office. Sources reported that multiple rounds were fired at the office of Khanpur MLA. A local official described the situation as a serious escalation in political tensions, emphasising the urgent need for decisive action to restore order. Haridwar's Senior Superintendent of Police, Paraminder Dobal, informed TNIE, In light of the incident, we have recommended to the District Magistrate the cancellation of the firearm licenses for both the former and current MLAs, as well as the revocation of their security detail. Following this, he used vulgar words against mother in a social pic.twitter.com/yk1bvTBqXw Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) January 26, 2025 PTI reported that Champion was picked up by the police from his residence in Dehradun following the incident and taken to Haridwar. In a video that has gone viral, he was seen in a police van going from Nehru Colony police station in Dehradun. Talking to reporters from inside the police van, Champion said the Khanpur MLA had attacked his mansion in Landhaura on Saturday night and abused him. What he did today was in reaction to that, Champion said. When I reacted, I was picked up.It is an injustice. I will fight against it, Champion told reporters. His wife Devyani Singh claimed that a complaint was lodged with the police about Umesh Kumar attacking their residence in Landhaura at 10. 28 pm on Saturday but when no action was taken, it became necessary to react to save our honour. The tension stems from a prolonged rivalry between the two leaders. For months, former MLA Kunwar 'Champion' and current MLA Umesh Kumar have been exchanging heated remarks on social media. To address the escalating tensions, authorities have deployed additional police forces across the district. Traffic along Kanvad Patri Roada critical route leading to the residences of both leadershas been completely blocked to prevent further clashes. We are taking all necessary precautions to maintain law and order, a police spokesperson said. Crowds are being actively prevented from approaching Champions residence. Telangana HC Directs DGP to Trace Maoist Chandan Misra and Wife
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Saturday directed the Director General of Police to immediately ascertain the whereabouts of Chandan Misra, a Maoist, and his wife and produce them before the jurisdictional magistrate by 10.30 am on January 27. The order came on a habeas corpus petition filed by Prof. Gaddam Laxman, president of Civil Liberties Committee, by way of house motion before a panel comprising of Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya and Justice Madhusudhan Rao Bobbili Ramaiah. The petitioner alleged that Misra, detenue No. 1, was taken away by the Jagadgirigutta police at about 9 pm on January 24. His wife Rapaka Swathy, detenue No. 2, was subsequently taken away by the police from her home at Srinivasa Colony, Jagadgirigutta, Rangareddy district. Counsel appearing for the petitioner contended that the brother of detenue No. 2, Kranthi, was an eyewitness. The petitioner said that the persons who took away both the detenues were in plain clothes but described themselves as policemen when asked by the detenue No.2 about their identity and the detenue were taken away by the police in a white car with the registration number AP 1341. It was contended that the detenue No. 2 was a home-maker and is not a Maoist and that more than 24 hours had passed since both the detenues were taken away by the police. Detenue No. 2 was incommunicado, i.e., not traceable on phone after 10 pm on January 24. The special government pleader argued that there was no evidence of the persons who took both the detenues away being policemen. He contended that Srinivasa Colony, Jagadgiri Gutta, is a congested area and the petition did not give any particular address of the house from which the detenues were taken away. Hence, the police had not been able to locate the house or gather any information. He argued that detenue No. 1 was the third accused in a crime registered in Andhra Pradesh (30 of 2018) and as the writ petition was served in the evening the respondents could not make any headway with regard to the incident. The panel observed that SHO, Jagadgirigutta, was present online but was unable to make submissions apparently in view of a technical glitch. The panel after hearing the parties and considering the statements made in writ petition including the apprehension of an encounter killing by the police of the detenue No.1, said, we are of the view that the respondents, particularly the respondent No. 3, being in-charge of the law and order situation in the particular colony/area and district, cannot have any basis to say that the respondents do not have any information with regard to the incident. The panel further said, considering the admitted facts of both the detenues being untraceable for more than 24 hours, the respondents not having any information with regard to either of the detenues after 24 hours and the admitted fact of both the detenues being taken away as witnessed by the brother of the detenue No.2, we deem it fit to direct the respondent No. 2, the DGP, to immediately ascertain the whereabouts of both the detenues, trace them and produce them before the jurisdictional magistrate by 10.30 am on 27.01.2025 and file a report in compliance of the directions which shall be placed before us on 27.01.2025. The panel directed the DGP to cause an enquiry and ascertain the truth of the statement that detenue No. 1 was an accused in a crime registered in Andhra Pradesh. The panel further recorded that, We may add that it is not acceptable that the respondents who are the law keepers of the state would feign ignorance of the incident where two persons have disappeared without trace or the inability to trace them even after 24 hours. The panel also directed to state to provide sufficient protection to the eye-witness. The matter will now be heard on Monday. 2. Education Society obtains status quo order in HYDRAA case Justice K. Lakshman of Telangana High Court directed the HYDRAA and other authorities to maintain the status quo in respect of a piece of land located in Old Alwal under the GHMC. The judge was dealing with a writ plea filed by Palla Narsimham Memorial Educational Society, which alleged that the authorities were interfering with its peaceful possession of open plots. The petitioner claimed ownership of the land based on a gift settlement deed and had obtained building permission. The petitioner argued that construction could not proceed due to disputes regarding the layout. It was alleged that GHMC constructed a compound wall on the land without following the due process of law. The petitioner contended that the authorities interference was illegal, arbitrary, and in violation of the Constitution. The sought a directive to prevent further disturbances and to ensure the societys uninterrupted possession of the plots. During the hearing, the judge questioned how the sub-registrar proceeded with the registration of sale deeds without verifying the authenticity of the layout. The judge expressed difficulty in determining whether the layout was genuine or not. The GHMC reportedly undertook the construction of a compound wall to secure the park area, allegedly at the request of HYDRAA. Meanwhile, petitioners counsel presented a sale deed to challenge the construction. Upon receipt of a complaint, the deputy commissioner conducted an inspection and found that, as per the gram panchayat layout, the land in question was designated as open space. However, the petitioner is reportedly claiming ownership of the property, allegedly by manipulating the layout. The authorities argued that the petitioner was attempting to encroach upon park land. After hearing the arguments, the judge directed the petitioner to submit all relevant documents and linked records to the respondent authorities. The respondents have been instructed to review the documents and issue orders within four weeks in accordance with the law. 3. Milk to Anganwadi Centers tender under challenge Justice T. Madhavi Devi of Telangana High Court will decide a writ plea challenging the actions of the Telangana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Limited, in not finalising the tenders issued for the transportation of milk to anganwadi centres in 33 districts of the state. The judge took on file a writ plea filed by Sri Laxmi Narsimha Swamy Traders who alleged that the respondent authorities were not finalising tenders issued for five districts in respect of supply of pack milk to 35,700 anganwadi centres. Standing counsel appearing for the respondent authorities appraised the judge of the bids received by the respondents and pointed out that the that price quoted by the petitioner was higher than another bidder. It was also contended that several negotiations took place between the petitioner and the respondent department, however, as the petitioner failed to quote a lower price, he did not get the tender. The standing counsel informed the judge that the average of quote for nine districts was taken while determining the price. Counsel for the petitioner strongly contested the average methodology adopted by the respondent authorities and pointed out that the same did not find any place in the tender notice. The counsel for the petitioner argued that even though the respondents took out different tender notices for all districts, but are now consolidating and averaging price without stating in the tender notice. The judge questioned the standing counsel for the respondents as to why the average methodology was being followed as against taking the lowest price in respect of each district. The standing counsel stated that the tender will not specify commercial bid as it is the decision of the respondent department. It was also brought to the notice of the judge that the earnest money deposit of the petitioner was returned and that stopping the tender at this stage would cause prejudice. After hearing the parties at length, the judge directed to the respondent authorities to file their response and required the respondents to state their rationale for averaging. While the judge was not inclined to stay the tender, it is made clear that the tender will be subject to the outcome of a writ petition.
Delhi Polls Are Not a Contest for National Capital but the Entire Country: Kejriwal
New Delhi: As campaigning intensified for the February 5 Assembly polls, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said the election in Delhi was not just a contest for political control of the national capital but the entire country. He said that the election pits two contrasting ideologies -- one focused on the welfare of the general public and the other on benefiting a select group of wealthy individuals -- against each other. In a related development, the AAP is all set to launch its manifesto on Monday. Addressing a press conference, the AAP supremo said: This election is about deciding how taxpayers money should be spent. One ideology, represented by the BJP, uses public funds to waive loans worth thousands of crores for its close associates. The other, our AAP model, focuses on providing free electricity, education, health care and transport to benefit the common man. Hitting back, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said the AAP and its convenor have been completely sidelined in the Delhi election, and out of despair, facing defeat, they have resorted to the politics of deception and lies. Today, we see that, gripped by the fear of certain defeat, the AAP is shouting day and night, claiming that if the BJP comes to power, the ongoing social welfare schemes will be discontinued. Slamming the BJP-led Centre, the former Delhi chief minister alleged that it had waived debts amounting to Rs 10 lakh crores of 400-500 industrialists during the past five years. The BJP model gives the peoples money to its friends as loans and then writes off those loans in two to three years. In contrast, the AAP model provides direct benefits to the public, including welfare schemes worth nearly Rs 25,000 per month for each household in Delhi, he said. Mr Kejriwal also accused the saffron party of planning to end all welfare schemes initiated by the AAP if it gains power in Delhi. The BJP has already clarified it will stop free electricity, free bus rides (for women), and other benefits provided by the Delhi government. I ask people: will they be able to bear this cost if the BJP is elected? he said. He also lashed out at the BJP for labelling welfare measures as freebies, alleging that the saffron party was trying to create guilt among the middle class while itself offering massive concessions to big businesses. When the BJP waives loans worth thousands of crores for its friends, is that not a freebie? he asked. Elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held on February 5 and the votes counted on February 8. The AAP is seeking a third consecutive term in office while the BJP is attempting to regain power in the national capital for the first time since 1998. The Congress, meanwhile, is trying to regain lost ground and to open its account after two failed attempts.

Justice Sujoy Paul Unfurls National Flag at TelanganaHC
Hyderabad: Justice Sujoy Paul, acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, on Sunday stressed that it was the collective duty of citizens, lawmakers, law enforcers, and the judiciary to uphold the Constitution and its values. Justice Paul was speaking after unfurling the National Flag at the High Court on Republic Day. He emphasised the essential role of the judiciary and the Constitution in maintaining Indias democratic integrity and safeguarding the human rights. Our Supreme Court and High Courts have consistently upheld human rights, without which no free system can exist, Justice Paul stated. Justice Paul highlighted the importance of the collaboration between Bar and Bench in tackling case backlogs. He expressed optimism that their joint efforts could lead to significant advancements in case management. Justice Paul said the Telangana High Court had achieved notable progress in 2024 in reducing its pending cases from 2,31,575 at the beginning of last year to 2,29,221 by December 31. During this period, 70,626 new cases were filed, and 72,980 cases were resolved, resulting in a net reduction of 2,354 cases. This achievement was particularly impressive given the shortage of judges, as the court disposed of 2,334 more cases than the cases filed in a year. The Telangana Legal Services Authority conducted 3,816 legal awareness programmes and provided legal aid to over 14,000 individuals in 2024. The state excelled in case disposals during two consecutive National Lok Adalats, achieving the highest performance in the nation. Community mediation centers were also established in the Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts, Justice Paul noted. To address staffing shortages, the High Court outlined its 2025 recruitment plan, and the government allocated Rs 2,580 crore for a new High Court building that will include judges' quarters and Bar Council facilities. Justice Paul called on stakeholders to renew their commitment to justice and constitutional values, urging a collective effort to ensure accessible justice for all, particularly for underprivileged communities. The event was attended by judges and legal representatives from across the state.

128 ULBs tenure ends, Telangana appoints special officials
Hyderabad: The government has appointed special officers for 128 urban local bodies (ULBs), excepting the GHMC and the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, whose tenure ended on Sunday. The list includes 119 municipal councils and nine municipal corporations. The term of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, which saw the defection of the BRS Mayor and some corporators, will end on January 28. We are awaiting the finalisation of the BC Commissions reservation and instructions from authorities to conduct the election, he said. The elections are held through ballot papers. Within 120 days of receiving orders, the official said, the preparations for the polls would be completed. Narsingi in the west, Boduppal in the east, Badangpet in the south and Jawaharnagar in the north are among the ULBs which will be headed by special officers.
Sunanda K. Datta-Ray | Twist in American Dream: Will Trump raj help India?
If a cartoon were to sum up initial reactions to Donald Trumps second coming, its caption should surely repeat that old gag: Stop the world, I want to get off! Perhaps not quite. The 47 th US President does crave the worlds adulation even if withdrawal from WHO and the Paris climate agreement appear to begrudge any of the service and sacrifice that leadership also entails. In a sense, he and Narendra Modi face not dissimilar dilemmas. Both are political outsiders. Both exalt the nitty-gritty of routine administrative responsibilities with grand notions of personal consequence. Neither shows any trace of the humility on which a silver-haired woman bishop dwelt as an essential component of leadership when speaking at the Washington National Cathedral as part of Mr Trumps inaugural ceremonial. On the contrary, the US President publicly denounced Bishop Mariann E. Budde, leader of Washingtons Episcopal Diocese, as a so-called bishop and radical left hard-line Trump hater. Like Mr Modi, Mr Trump too explicitly claims a super-human, indeed a divine, mandate. Being neither historically nor institutionally entitled to such grandeur, they are trying to invent it. Mr Modis unfailingly resplendent sartorial presence conjures up an ancient sacrosanct monarchy. Mr Trumps territorial ambitions extending to Canada and Mexico, Panama and Greenland recall another head of state who redesignated himself His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hajj Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of all the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular. Actually, the splendour of that bombast is not too far a cry from the US Senates initial proposal to designate the ruler His Highness, the President of the United States of America, and the Protector of their Liberties. The first US vice-president, John Adams, was comfortable with that as also with sonorous references to His Elective Majesty and His Mightiness. That may have been partly because American notions of the presidency were shaped by their perception of King George III as an absolute ruler. Americans didnt realise that the power he wielded didnt flow from any divine right or from his mothers ceaseless urging: George, be a King! It was the handiwork of lobbyists known as The Kings Friends. Even a future US founding father like Benjamin Franklin swelled with monarchical pride when he attended King George IIIs coronation in 1761. Burning royal effigies and toppling kingly statues came much later. So did the presidential rhetoric of Abraham Lincolns Gettysburg Address; Franklin D. Roosevelts heady declaration that The only thing we have to fear is fear itself; and John F. Kennedys noble exhortation to Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country. All that goes with an egalitarian George Washington setting the tone for republican disdain for frills and fancies by accepting the simple, no-nonsense title of President of the United States. Like Winston Churchill who rejected a dukedom, taking pride instead in being The Great Commoner, a plain President was far more appropriate for the leader of a world in which one out of every ten persons languish below the poverty threshold, children, representing the future of mankind, account for more than half of the worlds poorest inhabitants, and despite the ramshackle glitter of tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, 24 per cent of the global poor are Indian. Not that Indias movers and shakers are unaware that the indigent world can be clothed out of the trimmings of the rich, citing Oliver Goldsmith in She Stoops to Conquer . On April 4, 2011, even before New Delhi sent directives to state governments, the late Sudarshan Agarwal, former governor of Uttarakhand and Sikkim, wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying: It is with deep anguish that I am writing this letter as a concerned citizen of this country about the colossal wastage of food at weddings and other social functions in the country. It is painful to see 100 dishes being served to 1,000 or more guests at several of these weddings Last year, a minister in Karnataka had a wedding reception for 30,000 guests in a pandal where he had put 350 air-conditioners. I sincerely feel that we need to revive the guest control order which limits the number of dishes that can be served at dinners/lunches and also limits the number of guests. He added: Unfortunately, ministers themselves have not set an example. A couple of years ago, a Union minister had his daughters wedding at a heritage hotel in Jodhpur and it is reported that 60 private aircraft landed in Jodhpur carrying the invitees for the wedding. People are no fools; they understand everything. Many European leaders also fear that Mr Trumps return to the White House could mean a momentous, almost apocalyptic, shift that might disrupt alliances and play havoc with economic relations. Only Vladimir Putin, who upholds the absurd theory that the last American presidential election was stolen from Mr Trump, thinks a Trump presidency might end the Ukraine war. Other US rivals and adversaries like China, Iran and North Korea expect new tensions and heightened anti-Western agendas. Ironically, South and Southeast Asia, a region that includes many US allies, partners and friends, take a more placid view of Mr Trumps return. It does not arouse the same strong emotions in Japan and South Korea or among Asean members that it does in some Nato countries. The fawning pleasure with which Indias media lapped up evidence of external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar accorded the honour of a prominent front-row seat at the inauguration displayed no disapproval of Mr Trumps autocratic tendencies and contempt for liberal internationalist ideals. Being almost as transactional as the Republican Party chief himself, the region has long conducted relations with Washington on the basis of common interests rather than common values. Indians expect Mr Trump to be even more committed than Joe Biden to the Quad and the AUKUS nuclear agreement with Australia and Britain. India hopes for increased trade, improved technology transfer and, above all, greater scope for young men and women whose training and skills can benefit a US seeking to realise Mr Trumps Make America Great Again dream. Despite the racist comments of white supremacists, California-born Telugu Brahmin Usha Chilukuri Vance, a practising Hindu and the first ethnic Indian US Second Lady, could be the forerunner of a future that also means more wrangling over H-1B visas whose holders Norman Matloff, professor of computer science at a California university, famously called indentured servants. That twist of the American Dream augurs interesting times.
DC Edit | President Murmu Highlights Constitutions Legacy Amidst Challenges
President Droupadi Murmus message to the nation on the Republic Day was justifiably imbued with a sense of pride in that the Constitution has sustained this country and the country, too, in its turn, sustained the Constitution for 75 years. The President also noted the all-round progress the young republic has made in this span of time. However, she chose to ignore some of the big challenges that the ideals on which the Constitution and the country have been founded, including democracy, federalism, diversity and secularism, have been facing. The President rightly pointed out that the Constitution has guided the path of our progress in the last 75 years. It is welcome that she reiterated the fact that at the time of Independence, many parts of the country faced extreme poverty and hunger. However, we maintained a belief in ourselves and created conditions for growth. It is now for the people to build on it. The Presidents push for the bill, now before Parliament, seeking to introduce simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, however, sounded a jarring note. She listed the advantages the proposed reforms would bring, such as promoting consistency in governance, preventing policy paralysis, mitigating resource diversion and alleviating financial burdens on the state. True, each of these goals merits discussion and we, as a nation, should think of how to make them happen, but all that should take place in the realm of administrative reform. To prescribe a one nation-one election pill in a parliamentary system of governance would be like missing the woods for the trees. The ideals of democracy and the respect for peoples choices in a democracy cannot be sacrificed at the altar of administrative expediency. If India chooses to do so, it would be nothing short of writing the prescription for a totalitarian government. It may be remembered that the President entered her office with a vow to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and she must defend its foundational ideals as well.

Rajasthan snakebite crisis: Ineffective antivenom puts lives at risk
JAIPUR: Rajasthan is grappling with a serious snakebite crisis, as the medicines available in state hospitals are proving ineffective in neutralizing the venom of desert snakes. According to recent research, more than half of the snakebite cases in the state are caused by the highly venomous Saw Scaled Viper (Echis carinatus sochureki), locally known as the Peevana snake. A study conducted on 210 patients of snake-bitten cases, revealed that 105 of these cases had E.c. sochureki envenoming. The study highlights the alarming finding of poor antivenom response to E. c. sochureki envenoming, with significant clinical bleeding and delayed coagulopathy. The study suggested that there is an urgent need for region-specific antivenom in Western India. The primary issue lies in the fact that the antivenom currently used in Rajasthan is produced using the venom of South Indian snakes. However, this antivenom is ineffective in nearly 70% of Peevana snakebite cases. This alarming finding has emerged from a joint study conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi. The study reveals that desert snakes, including the Peevana, possess more potent venom than their South Indian counterparts. As a result, patients often require 5 to 10 antivenom injections, but in rural areas, even administering 150 to 200 injections has proven ineffective in counteracting the venom. According to the research, Tamil Nadu's Irula Cooperative Society is the only licensed venom collection center in India. Since 1978, the society has been extracting venom from South Indian snakes to produce polyvalent antivenom targeting the ig four venomous speciesRussell's Viper, Saw Scaled Viper, Krait, and Cobra. However, this antivenom is proving insufficient for treating bites from the Peevana snake, which is predominantly found in western Rajasthan. The Saw Scaled Viper (Echis carinatus), also known as the Indian saw-scaled viper or little Indian viper, is one of the ig four snakes responsible for the highest number of snakebite incidents and fatalities in India. These snakes thrive in parts of the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent, and their presence is particularly concerning in densely populated regions. In sandy environments, they often bury themselves with only their heads exposed and become more active after rains or on humid nights. Locals claim that the Peevana snake displays unusual behavior, such as allegedly sitting on the chest of sleeping individuals and releasing venom through its breath, creating a hissing sound. However, experts argue that the bite of the Peevana is so small that the mark is difficult to find, and people believe that it releases venom through breathing. This has led to a long-standing practice in desert areas where residents sleep on elevated cots or *takhats* to avoid snake encounters. Dr. Maya Gopalkrishna from the Microbiology Department of AIIMS Jodhpur emphasizes the urgent need for a region-specific venom collection centre. The subspecies of the Saw Scaled Viper is found not only in Rajasthan but also in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Gulf countries. Our research recommends the establishment of regional venom collection centres across the country to develop more effective antivenom tailored to local snake species, she said. With snakebite cases on the rise and existing treatment methods proving ineffective, health authorities must act swiftly to address this life-threatening issue by developing targeted solutions tailored to Rajasthan's unique ecological challenges.

Coffee goes dearer as prices shoot up by at least Rs.200 a kg
Anantapur: Coffee prices have shot up alarmingly with a kilogramme of its powder going up by at least 200. This is because production of coffee beans seeds has been poor in the largest coffee-producing region of Kodagu (Coorg) in Karnataka due to massive damage caused to its crop because of both rain deficit and excessive rains. Coffee production scenario has been similar in Brazil, which produces the largest quantity of coffee beans in the world. Normally, a family of four uses more than three kilogrammes of filter coffee powder every month. We have limited our coffee drinking to only twice a day, rather than having it four times daily, Lakshmi, a housewife, told Deccan Chronicle . Kodagu district in Karnataka grows 33 per cent of the total coffee produced in India. The other main coffee-producing districts are again in Karnataka Chikmagalur, Hassan, Shimoga and Mysore. According to available data, output of coffee beans in Chikmagalur, which grows coffee over 93,005 acres, had been 82,450 metric tonnes in 2023. The production during 2022 had been 80,150 metric tonnes. But the situation is worse during the present year. Coffee estates in Brazil are spread over approximately 27,000 square kilometres, which translates to roughly 66 million acres. The production of coffee beans in Brazil too had taken a hit during the last season. Manjunath, who retails coffee powder from Chikmagalur in Anantapur, disclosed to DC that prices of coffee are expected to grow further in the retail markets during the next few months, until the new crop arrives. Coffee estates need balanced rains. But they had been hit by abnormal rains and rain deficit during the peak season. Such fluctuation has led to coffee prices shooting up, said a representative of Durga Traders, another coffee powder marketer in Anantapur. He pointed out that though the Ooty region in Tamil Nadu has many estates, they prefer to grow tea, rather than coffee.

Those who have not yet been listed as beneficiaries need not lose hope. The government is dedicated to extending these benefits to all eligible families, he assured. Bhongir MLA Kumbham Anil Kumar added that the introduction of these new schemes will revolutionise the state's welfare sector. He confirmed that the selection of beneficiaries was conducted transparently through gram sabhas. Additionally, he announced that fine rice will soon be distributed to ration card holders, further supporting the communitys needs.
