Watch: How is India responding to calls for shipping decarbonisation?
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), routinely lays down rules that regulate international shipping which carries almost all of the worlds trade. These rules are a result of consensus arrived at carefully, with much expert input, through meetings that are not dramatic. But in October, when the IMO that has 176 member-nations met to vote on decarbonising global shipping as a response to climate change, the U.S. actively disrupted the meeting. Chaos ruled. Threats were made. Arms were twisted. And the vote on a decarbonization programme that India helped to draft was deferred by a year.

Kedarnaths record rush leaves behind 2,324 tonnes of waste, raising concerns over Himalayan ecology
DEHRADUN: The recent pilgrimage season at the revered Kedarnath Dham witnessed an unprecedented surge, with over 17.68 lakh devotees allegedly flocking to the world-famous shrine for darshan . While the spiritual turnout was historic, it has also cast a harsh spotlight on a monumental waste management crisis, with authorities collecting a staggering 2,324 tonnes of garbage. The Kedarnath shrine, which saw the closing of its portals on 23 October after a nearly six-month season, is now grappling with the consequences of this massive influx. The volume of waste this year has significantly surpassed previous seasons, stated a senior official from the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB). We collected over 325 tonnes more waste this year compared to the last pilgrimage cycle. The sheer scale of the litter, comprising plastic bottles, discarded raincoats and other non-biodegradable material, necessitated an intensive ten-day post-season clean-up drive across the temple premises and the arduous trekking routes. Responsibility for sanitation along the route, stretching from Sonprayag and Gaurikund up to the high-altitude temple, rests primarily with Sulabh International, which deploys over 450 Paryavaran Mitras (Environmental Friends) annually. The waste is meticulously segregated. Animal waste from mules and ponies ferrying supplies and pilgrims is collected separately from plastic and organic refuse. While plastic and animal dung are processed near Sonprayag, the organic waste must be transported nearly 70 km to the district headquarters in Raintoli, incurring massive logistical costs. Environmental experts are voicing serious concerns over the escalating impact of unchecked tourism on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Chandan Nayal, an environmentalist, told this newspaper, The 325-tonne increase is deeply worrying. Rising human activity in these sensitive zones is severely disrupting the ecological balance. We are seeing similar spikes in trash during trekking and adventure tourism as well. Nayal highlighted a critical issue, The most unfortunate aspect of plastic waste here is how it accelerates snow melt, further destabilising the environment. Tourism, whether religious or adventure-based, must become strictly eco-friendly. Dhananjay Pathak, in charge of Sulabh Internationals operations, confirmed the logistical strain. The waste is moved from the Dham down to Gaurikund via mules and our ground staff. From there, the organic waste is transported by vehicles to Rudraprayag district headquarters. Our team of over 450 workers strives tirelessly throughout the season.

Two women naxals surrender in five days in MP, Chhattisgarh
BHOPAL: The surrender of two wanted female naxal cadres in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh within five days earlier this month may prove crucial to the ongoing operations aimed at eliminating left-wing extremism (LWE) from Madhya Pradesh by March 2026. On 1 November, a 22-year-old naxal cadre identified as Sunita, who carried a bounty of Rs 14 lakh on her head and was armed with an INSAS rifle, surrendered before the police in Balaghat district of MP. Five days later, on 6 November, another wanted female naxal, identified as Kamla Sodi alias Taruna, who carried a bounty of Rs 17 lakh on her head, surrendered before the police in Chhattisgarhs Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district. Both women, who hail from Chhattisgarh, had been active in the dense forests of Madhya Pradesh, particularly in the tri-junction of Balaghat (MP), Gondia (Maharashtra) and Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh), which forms the core of the CPI (Maoist) Maharashtra-MP-Chhattisgarh (MMC) zone. According to sources, the two surrendered cadres possess vital information about 40-50 armed naxals, around half of them women, currently operating across three to four dalams (armed groups) of the CPI (Maoist) in MPs Balaghat and Mandla districts. Credible sources connected to MP Polices anti-naxal operations said information given by Sunita has put a stamp of approval on intelligence regarding the presence of a highly dangerous group of 11-12 armed cadres led by central committee member (CCM) Ramder in MP and neighbouring jungles since early 2015. Aged around 58 years, Ramder was actually assigned the responsibility of heading the MMC zone by 2024-end and has been active since early 2025 in the region. It has now been revealed that the same group had killed the 25-year-old youth Devendra Yadav, on the suspicion of being a police informer in Balaghat district in September, sources claimed. Following Sunitas surrender, the group headed by Ramder had at least four female cadres left. Sunita was one of the two bodyguards of the groups head. A few months back, we had got evidence about the presence of Ramder in the jungles of Balaghat, but it has been fully confirmed after Sunitas surrender. Her questioning has revealed that the group led by Ramderwhose other bodyguard has been identified as Sagar, is equipped with INSAS and AK-47 assault rifles, besides an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL). The Madhya Pradesh Police are now preparing to question the other surrendered cadre, Taruna, in Chhattisgarh. Sources in the police forces of both states said they are in constant touch with each other regarding Tarunas questioning in connection with the three to four armed naxal groups active in the jungles of Balaghat and Mandla. Taruna was part of that group which had lost three female cadres and one male cadre in the gun-battle with police in June this year in the Pachama Dadar forests of Balaghat district. All those four naxals carried bounties of Rs 14 lakh each. Taruna had managed to escape from that gun-battle and her questioning will be crucial for gathering credible and latest inputs about the movement of the outlaws forming part of Darrekhasa Area Committee, Malajkhand Area Committee and Tanda Area Committee, which have long been active in Balaghat and Mandla districts, sources claimed. Importantly, the June 2025 encounter not only resulted in the elimination of the four wanted cadres but also led to the recovery of a truck full of arms and ammunition. It further helped MPs anti-naxal security apparatus penetrate the groups stronghold in Pachama Dadar, considered unbreachable for nearly three-and-a-half decades. Sunitas questioning has also brought to light possible unrest among women cadres within the three to four dalams operating in the region, stemming from growing sexual exploitation by senior members. They are being forced to work as coolies and cooks and very often subjected to sexual exploitation. Earlier, they had no option but to remain in the group, as they feared being killed by the group in case of breaking away. But the series of encounters of big naxal commanders in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and MP, are believed to have encouraged them to surrender and join the mainstream. Even Sunita, whose naxal cadre father made her join the outlaws in Chhattisgarh in 2022, has been subjected to sexual exploitation and also insulted by group leader Ramder, while alleging her of being in sexual relationship with a fellow male cadre, sources said.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath highlights sharp drop in crime, inaugurates modern forensic lab
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reflected on the states law-and-order situation on Tuesday, emphasising that crime in the state had sharply decreased. Criminals are now caught quickly and punished, said CM Yogi, adding that if a robbery or snatching occurred, the offender could be seen limping the next day. The Chief Minister made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Gorakhpur during the inauguration of a modern forensic laboratory. He also reviewed law-and-order work and held a Janata Darbar to hear public grievances. CM Yogi asserted that crime no longer occurred freely in Uttar Pradesh. This is a new Uttar Pradesh that does not tolerate crime and ensures punishment, he said. The modern forensic laboratory, inaugurated by the Chief Minister, was built at a cost of Rs 72.78 crore. Yogi said the FSL lab was part of the governments zero-tolerance policy towards crime. To support his point, he cited improved womens participation in the workforce due to enhanced security. Prior to 2017, only 13 per cent of women in the state were working. The figure has now risen to 35 per cent, as women feel safer going out for work, he claimed. The Chief Minister also highlighted that 2,19,000 police personnel had been recruited over the past eight years. Many states do not have such a large police force. Recently, 60,244 new police recruits joined the service. In 2017, the government had to rely on military and paramilitary training centres due to limited capacity, but the state now has sufficient training facilities of its own, he added. CM Yogi further noted that following a 2016 Supreme Court directive for Safe Cities, Uttar Pradesh now has 17 municipal corporations, with Noida and Greater Noida linked to an Integrated Command and Control Centre. Over 13 lakh CCTV cameras have been installed across these areas to provide round-the-clock surveillance.

Assam marks late legendary singer Zubeen Gargs 53rd birthday
GUWAHATI: On the 53rd birth anniversary of the late music icon Zubeen Garg on Tuesday, the Centre granted the necessary sanction to the Assam Police to proceed against the accused linked to his death in Singapore on September 19. The approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs was required as the alleged murder that took place in another country. Today marks the 53rd birthday of our beloved Zubeen Garg a day that reminds us of his music, his voice, and his irreplaceable place in Assams heart, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X. He said Union Home Minister Amit Shah granted the required sanction under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Section 208 of BNSS, in simple language, says: if a crime is committed outside India, the case can be taken up by the court only after the Central government gives prior sanction, the chief minister explained. 'I won't call it accident, it's murder', says Assam CM on Zubeen Gargs death; 'share evidence', says Gogoi He further said, This sanction is, therefore, a crucial legal step, allowing us to file a charge sheet and move forward firmly and lawfully for the trial of the case. We remain fully committed to file the charge sheet against the accused persons within 10th of December 2025. Garg had died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea. He travelled to Singapore to take part in the 4th North East India Festival (NEIF). Later, seven persons, including NEIF organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, were arrested by the Special Investigation Team. All of them are now in judicial custody. Meanwhile, various programmes were organised across the state to mark the singers birthday. Fans gathered outside his Guwahati residence on Monday midnight, cut a cake, placed it before his photograph and sang the birthday song along with several other popular numbers. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and sister, Palmee Borthakur, were also present. The BJP and the Congress also paid tribute. The BJP organised blood donation camps at some places.
