Air India strengthens operations as winter fog season begins to minimise flight disruptions

GURUGRAM: The winter fog window officially begins across airports nationwide, including Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), on Wednesday, December 10, and will continue until February 10 next year. Dense fog in northern India, particularly around Delhi, has historically caused massive flight delays and disruptions during this period. Air India held a briefing on Tuesday at its Gurugram headquarters, outlining proactive steps taken to ensure minimal impact on flights this year. A senior operations official said the airline has strengthened internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) based on previous years experience and improvements in operations during last years fog window. Low visibility in northern India can have a cascading effect on flight schedules across the network, the official said, adding that Air India has worked closely with stakeholders and implemented several measures, including CAT III B crew rostering, aircraft readiness, network-wide airport preparedness, tech-enabled passenger assistance, and proactive communication to reduce inconvenience. The airline has ensured that crews are trained in Low Visibility Operations (LVO) using CAT III B-certified Instrument Landing Systems. Additional standby crews are ready to handle any exigency. CAT III B-certified aircraft will be deployed at strategic locations prone to fog impact. Air India has also coordinated with airport partners to enhance passenger support. Ground teams will be available to assist passengers, while care packages with refreshments and essentials will be provided at both origin and diversion airports. Airport staff will monitor delays, make regular announcements, and rebook affected passengers on alternative flights. Flight schedules have been aligned to reduce inconvenience on long-haul and metro-to-metro flights with onward connectivity. The airlines Integrated Operations Control Centre and teams at key domestic airports will operate round-the-clock to manage disruptions. Real-time meteorological forecasts and safety risk assessments will guide proactive schedule adjustments. Dedicated customer contact teams will provide guidance on fog-related queries, sending alerts to passengers via SMS, WhatsApp, and email. Air India has also activated its Fog Care initiative, allowing passengers affected by fog disruptions to reschedule flights or request a full refund without penalty. The airline said these measures aim to ensure flights run safely and smoothly throughout the fog season.

Air India smoothly implements new crew roster after DGCA regulations

NEW DELHI: Efficient and advanced planning by the Tata-owned Air India Group ensured that both Air India and Air India Express sailed through smoothly after the revised roster chart for airline crew, ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, came into effect from November 1. The poor management and negligence by Indigo resulted in 1,232 cancellations last month, which cascaded into a full-blown catastrophe from December 1, crippling airport operations in the country. It even brought operations at the countrys busiest airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, to a standstill for 24 hours. Way back in October, when the Ministry of Civil Aviation finalised the winter schedule (October 26, 2025, to March 28, 2026) for all airlines, Indigo was permitted to operate 15,014 departures per week, the maximum permitted for any airline. Air India and Air India Express were a far second and third, allotted 4,277 and 3,171 flights respectively per week. Sources across Air India said the new Flight Duty Time Limitations were undoubtedly a huge challenge, as literally everything had to be changed. The DGCA had informed all the airlines by March 2024 that they had to be implemented, and airlines kept seeking time to implement them as it was a mammoth task. Air India began recruitment of Captains and Flying Officers as soon as it officially took over the airline two years ago, said a source. We went all out to recruit pilots for two reasons we had massive expansion plans with orders for 570 new aircraft placed as of date. They definitely need cockpit crew in large numbers when they arrive. Training of pilots is a huge exercise, and we wanted to be ready. Secondly, we understood that the new roster would require a massive increase in operational crew, he explained. Indigo officially told the DGCA a day ago that a technical glitch in its software was also a contributory reason for the massive crisis it caused. An Air India source said, When it was made known clearly to all of us that the new rules will fully come into effect by November 1, we began work on it by October. The software involved in it is a very complicated one. It is very technical and involves countless algorithms. It took us two months to ready it fully. Another source said the fully operational software was in place by mid-October only. We trial ran it for 15 days to sort out teething problems and other issues. When they were fully implemented, we were fully ready for it, he explained. The professional approach towards management that the Tata Group brings to the table is a key reason we sailed through smoothly, added another source.

India, Brazil sign key MoU to boost life-cycle support, cooperation on Scorpne-class submarines

NEW DELHI: India and Brazil on Tuesday struck an understanding in the area of the Exchange of Information related to Maintenance of Scorpne-class Submarines and other Naval Vessels. As per the Indian Navy, the landmark tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Indian Navy, Brazilian Navy, and Mazagon Dockyard Ltd during the ongoing visit of the CNS to Brazil. The Indian Navy said, The MoU will enhance life-cycle support, enable experience sharing in maintenance, logistics and training, and strengthen cooperation between government agencies and industry of both nations. The Navy added that the MoU will further boost Defence Research and Development (R&D) collaboration and drive technological innovation in sustaining Scorpne-class submarines and other naval platforms. Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, on Tuesday proceeded on an official visit to Brazil from December 9 to 12, 2025. The visit, according to the Indian Navy, is aimed at consolidating the robust and growing maritime partnership between the Indian Navy and the Brazilian Navy, an important pillar of the broader IndiaBrazil Strategic Partnership. Elaborating on the visit, the Navy said, During the visit, the CNS will hold discussions with senior leadership of Brazil, including Defence Minister Jose Mucio; Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces; and Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, Commander of the Brazilian Navy. These interactions will provide an opportunity to review ongoing bilateral maritime cooperation, enhance operational-level linkages, and explore new avenues for collaboration between the two navies. The visit includes engagements with operational commands, and visits to naval bases and shipyards of the Brazilian Navy. Discussions will focus on shared maritime priorities, naval interoperability, capacity building, and collaboration within multilateral frameworks, including the broader SouthSouth cooperation. The visit by the Chief of the Naval Staff reaffirms the Indian Navys commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Brazilian Navy in maritime security, professional exchanges and capacity building, thereby contributing to stability in the global maritime commons. India and Brazil have been working on strengthening defence ties. In October, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin in New Delhi. Brazils Defence Minister Jos Mcio Monteiro Filho was also present. The leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing defence initiatives and identified priority areas for joint work, including co-development and co-production of defence equipment. India and Brazil share a strategic partnership, and the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advance defence cooperation with a focus on military-to-military exchanges, joint exercises and training visits.

Belgium Supreme Court clears Mehul Choksis extradition to India in Rs 13,850-crore PNB scam

The Belgium Supreme Court has dismissed Indian fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksis plea challenging his extradition to India in a Rs 13,850-crore scam, CBI officials said on Tuesday. Choksi had approached Belgiums top court on October 30, challenging the October 17 order of the Antwerp Court of Appeals, which had termed Indias extradition request enforceable. The spokesperson for the Court of Cassation, Advocaat-general Henri Vanderlinden, said, The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal. So, the decision of the Court of Appeal stands. The Antwerp court had earlier ruled that Choksi, the main accused in the Rs 13,850-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, faced no risk of being denied a fair trial or subjected to ill-treatment if sent back to India. On October 17, a four-member indictment chamber of the Antwerp Court of Appeals upheld an earlier order issued by the pre-trial chamber of the district court on November 29, 2024. It found no irregularity in the arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai special court in May 2018 and June 2021, ruling them enforceable and clearing the way for Choksis extradition. Dismissing Choksis appeal, the Court of Appeals held that the businessman failed to provide concretely plausible evidence of a genuine risk of torture or denial of justice. It found that the documents he submitted did not substantiate his claims of being subjected to a political trial. Choksi had claimed that the Indian system did not conform to international law. In response, Indian agencies submitted photographs of Mumbais Arthur Road Jail, specifically Barrack No. 12where Choksi will be held once extraditedto counter his claims that Indian prisons are overcrowded and unsafe. The 46-square-metre barrack has two cells with private toilets and basic facilities. The images were shared to refute his assertions of poor prison conditions. The agencies the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) had been tracking the fugitive since he fled India on January 2, 2018. The courts order noted that Choksi is not a Belgian citizen but a foreign national. He was arrested in Antwerp on April 11, 2025, at the request of Indian agencies. The offences cited by India including fraud, forgery, document falsification, and corruption are also considered crimes under Belgian law. The cases registered in India fall under IPC sections 120B, 201, 409, 420, 477A and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, all carrying imprisonment of more than one year, the order stated. The Belgian court also recognised equivalent offences under Articles 66, 196, 197, 213, 240, 241, 245, 246, 247 SSSS2-4, 324a-b, and 496 of the Belgian Criminal Code, covering criminal organisation, swindle, embezzlement, and forgery. Rejecting Choksis claims of political persecution, the Court of Appeal said the offences cannot be considered political, military or non-extraditable tax offences, adding there were no grounds to believe that the request was made to prosecute or punish him for his race, religion, nationality or political affiliation. Choksi had also alleged he was kidnapped from Antigua by Indian agencies. The court, however, said it cannot be inferred from the documents supplied that he was kidnapped in Antigua on the instructions of Indian authorities. It also dismissed his claims that the Indian judiciary lacks independence and that media coverage would prevent a fair trial, calling such fears unfounded. In November 2022, Interpol had dropped the Red Corner Notice against Choksi after he claimed an attempted abduction by Indian agents in Antigua. Even without the notice, the ED with R&AWs help sent a request to Belgian authorities to arrest him. Earlier, on May 23, 2021, Choksi was arrested in Dominica for illegal entry after going missing from Antigua and Barbuda, where he had been living since 2018. He had alleged he was forcibly taken to Dominica by Indian operatives. Choksi is the owner of the Gitanjali Group, a jewellery retail chain with 4,000 stores in India. He, along with nephews Nirav Modi and Neeshal Modi, colluded with PNB officials to defraud the bank of over Rs 13,850 crore one of the biggest scams in Indias banking history. PNB officials at the Brady House branch in Mumbai issued fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) to facilitate import credit for pearls for a year, violating RBI rules that limit such credit to 90 days. Overseas branches of Indian banks ignored guidelines and failed to share documentation with PNB. The CBI registered a case based on PNBs complaint, but by then Choksi and others had fled India.
