Naval helicopter Saaras finds new home in Vizag
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Navys UH-3H helicopter, retired in June 2024 after 17 years of service, was officially installed on RK Beach Road on Wednesday. The helicopter joins an impressive lineup of naval assets on display, including an anti-submarine aircraft and a Sea Harrier fighter plane, as part of the TU-142 Aircraft Museum in Visakhapatnam. Speaking to TNIE, Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) Commissioner KS Viswanathan stated, The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 3 crore. With this project, we aim to offer tourists what it feels like to be inside a UH-3H helicopter. We are also in contact with the Navy to include additional features, such as exhibits detailing the helicopters components and history. The project is expected to be completed in three months, he added. The UH-3H helicopter named Saaras was inducted into the Indian Navy on March 24, 2009, at Indian Naval Ship (INS) Dega under Indian naval air squadron (INAS) 350. The name is derived from the Indian crane (Sarus crane), symbolising strength, grace, and vigilance. Over its service period, it played a pivotal role in special operations, search-and-rescue (SAR) missions, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. Its advanced SAR capabilities proved invaluable during natural disasters, contributing to numerous rescue efforts under challenging circumstances. Brought to India in 2007 along with INS Jalashwa, the Saars became a symbol of Strength, Valour, and Perseverance, as represented by the squadrons crest. It actively contributed to offshore security, logistical support, and safeguarding Indias maritime boundaries. The de-induction ceremony, held on June 28, 2024, at INS Dega, marked the end of its distinguished chapter in Indian Naval Aviation. During the event, Vice-Admiral Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, presented a commemorative plaque to the State government, received by District Joint Collector K Mayur Ashok. The installation of the UH-3H helicopter at RK Beach will be a notable attraction for tourists and an educational highlight, showcasing the history and contributions of the Indian Navys aerial assets.
Hair dryer shipped to neighbour bursts, Bengaluru woman loses fingers
BAGALKOT: Receiving a parcel containing a hair dryer proved painfully costly for the widow of a deceased soldier in Ilkal city of Bagalkot district on Wednesday. Basamma Yaranal, the wife of Papanna, a soldier who was killed in a short-circuit accident in Jammu and Kashmir in 2017, ended up grievously injuring her fingers, forearms and face after the hair dryer exploded in her hands. Basamma had received a courier addressed to a neighbour, Shashikala, the widow of another deceased soldier. The parcel also bore Shashikalas name and mobile number. However, since she was out of town when it arrived, Shashikala requested Basamma to receive it on her behalf and check its contents. Basamma did as requested, and opened the parcel to find a hair dryer inside. She then tried to demonstrate the device in front of other neighbours by switching it on, when it suddenly exploded with a loud bang, resulting in Basamma losing nine of her fingers, while also severely wounding her forearms and face. Neighbour didnt order hair dryer, reveals probe The explosion was so intense that it caused the victims blood to splatter across her home, leaving neighbours in a state of shock. She was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. Soon, the Ilkal police launched an investigation, which apparently revealed that Shshikala had never ordered a hair dryer, making the situation murkier, and raising more questions about the parcels origins. Accordingly, the police are now probing how the hair dryer, reportedly manufactured in Visakhapatnam, reached Bagalkot, before being couriered to Shashikala. They are also trying to investigate if there was any foul play, while also tracing the order and payment details to determine the source of the alleged explosive device.
Ambition, focus: A navy mans tireless march to movie stardom
KOLLAM: Jayan is a Malayali movie icon who continues to live on in the hearts of millions, even 41 years after his untimely demise. Yet, few are aware of the legendary actors stint as a navyman a chapter of his life that remains largely unexplored. Speaking to TNIE, former chief petty officer G K Pillai, Jayans fellow seaman for nearly four years, offered a rare glimpse into this lesser-known side of the famed thespian. M Krishnan Nair or M K Nair to his naval colleagues, Jayan joined the Navy through the cadet entry scheme in the 1950s. According to Pillai, Jayan aspired to be a commissioned officer a dream he pursued relentlessly but was unable to fulfil. Jayan worked hard towards becoming a commissioned officer. However, the Navys rules at the time did not permit sailors in the engineering, electrical and electronics department to rise to the commissioned ranks. His attempts to switch to the executive branch, where such promotions were possible, proved unsuccessful. Yet, Jayan never lost hope and remained focused on building a successful life for himself. He was also a smart NCC cadet during his school days, Pillai recalls. Pillai remembers Jayan as a multifaceted individual with exceptional talents. He was a sharp shooter, a fitness enthusiast, and an accomplished athlete who won prizes in Navy competitions. Jayan also excelled as a forward in the Navigation and Direction Schools football team. The competition was fierce due to the Navys policy of directly recruiting engineering graduates as trainee officers in the engineering, electrical, and electronics branches. This disappointment eventually pushed him to pursue a career in cinema. While posted at INS Venduruthy in Kochi during the late 1960s, Jayan made several attempts to break into Malayalam cinema. Though initially unsuccessful, he persisted, recounts Pillai. Jayan reached out to Pillai for help. Pillai facilitated a meeting with legendary actor Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair, who introduced Jayan to Malayalam cinema. I took him to Thikkurissys home at Jawahar Nagar, in Thiruvananthapuram, and introduced him. Thikkurissy promised to recommend Jayan to cinema producers. A few days later, he took Jayan to Merryland Studios and requested the late Subramaniam to offer him a role. Jayans persistence paid off, and he eventually achieved his dream of becoming an actor, Pillai reminisced. Jayan underwent two years of initial training at INS Circars, Visakhapatnam, followed by professional training at INS Valsura, Jamnagar, specialising in electrical and electronics equipment. He was trained in radio, radar, sonar, and wireless systems in the radio branch. Upon completing his EMR course, Jayan was posted at the Navigation and Direction Training School at INS Venduruthy. He later served on board INS Rana and INS Mysore. Before retiring as a master chief petty officer in 1972, he was stationed at the TAS School at INS Venduruthy.
Karnataka bypoll results: Parties keep fingers crossed
BENGALURU: With just 48 hours to go before the announcement of the Sandur , Shiggaon and Channapatna bypoll results, the mood in the Congress camp is upbeat, with the party hoping to take all three seats in the kitty. However, political analysts said that the race is likely to go down to the wire in two seats, and the more likely outcome is for each of the parties BJP, Congress and JDS winning one each. The polling was held on November 13 and counting of votes will take place on November 23. In Sandur, the Congress may have cashed in on the internal bickering in the BJP, as the saffron party giving the responsibility to win the seat to former minister and Gangavathy MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy did not go down well with some local leaders. It will be a hands down win for Congress candidate E Annapoorna, wife of Ballari MP E Tukaram, a Congress leader said with confidence. The BJPs Bangaru Hanumanthu, however, gave a strong fight, but Annapoorna was the favourite of bettors, according to a source. Tough poll for both BJP, Congress in Shiggaon bypoll The contest, which looked one-sided initially in favour of Bharat, gradually turned out to be neck and neck. Earlier, another Congress aspirant, Syed Azeempeer Khadri, was miffed over not being given the ticket, but later the situation turned in favour of the Congress as there was internal bickering in the BJP, a source said. During the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had taken a lead of over 8,500 votes in Shiggaon assembly constituency, which was held by Bommai, which falls under Dharwad Lok Sabha seat. However, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi managed to win. If the trend continues, it will be a photo finish in Shiggaon as bettors are in favour of both Bharat and Pathan equally, according to informed sources. The Channapatna Act: When two actors fight, who will have the last laugh? The high voltage fight in Channapatna between Congress C P Yogeshwara and former prime minister H D Deve Gowdas grandson and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy son Nikhil Kumaraswamy is likely to end up in a photo-finish, too. Yogeshwara himself had predicted this. Whether Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khans alleged racist remarks on Kumaraswamy senior had an impact on the outcome, whether it had favoured Nikhil or Yogeshwara will be known after the results. The seat was held by Kumaraswamy who became Mandya MP. Political analysts observed that all three parties were likely to win one seat each, as it was in the 2023 Assembly polls. BJP leaders privately admitted that they may win Shiggaon and its ally partner Channapatna, but Sandur is ruled out for them.

Telangana HC questions arrest of Patnam Narender Reddy
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday questioned the Telangana police as to why they had not informed the family members of Patnam Narender Reddy about his arrest. Justice K. Lakshman made this observation while dealing with a criminal petition filed by former BRS MLA Narender Reddy, seeking quashing of the Docket Order dated November 13, 2024. Gandra Mohan Rao, senior counsel for Narender Reddy, submitted that the petitioner was arrested from the KBR park, while he was on a morning walk, and police had not informed the arrest of the petitioner to his family members. He brought to the notice of the court about the leakage of alleged confessional statements released by police, stating that the petitioner had agreed to the conspiracy to incite violence at the behest of BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao. The senior counsel contended that the case was lodged with political motive and the trial court, without considering the facts and provisions, routinely accepted the remand of Narender Reddy. Public prosecutor Palle Nageshwar Rao, however, refuted the arguments of the senior counsel and said that Narender Reddy was arrested from his house and submitted that the police had followed due procedure in arresting the petitioner. During the hearing, the court asked the public prosecutor as to why the information pertaining to the arrest of the petitioner was not informed to his family members, if he was arrested in the house and why it was informed to his close associate Saleem. Thereby, the judge observed, the police have violated the procedure of arrest. The court further observed that the petitioner is a former MLA and he could not have run away from the arrest, had he been arrested from the house. The arrest of the petitioner from KBR Park is in violation of the arrest procedure and the police arrested him as if he was a terrorist. The court also said that the police cannot arrest Narender Reddy only on the ground of conspiracy as the government alleges him of instigating farmers and others against parting with their land. Going by call records, the court says Narender Reddy called the farmers 10 to 15 days prior to the Lagcharla incident, while his close associate has not made not more than one or two calls per day. So how can this case fall under the category of conspiracy, the court questioned the public prosecutor. The judge directed the public prosecutor to furnish the statements of Lakshmiah and two others, based on which the name of Narender Reddy was included in the Second Remand Report dated November 13, 2024. On the request of the PP, the court adjourned the hearing to Thursday.

Telangana: Tribal Farmers Allege Land Grab by Non-Tribals
Visakhapatnam: Tribal farmers of Panasalapadu in Rolugunta mandal of Anakapalli district have accused officials of transferring their agricultural lands in survey numbers 8-1, 6-9, and 6-1 to real estate developers without the consent of their rightful owners. Gemila Chinnabbai of Panasalapadu alleged that former sarpanch of Ratnampet Tamatapu Satyanarayana, who is not an Adivasi, had colluded with other non-tribals and grabbed over 12 acres of agricultural lands of tribal people for real estate purposes. Chinnabbai explained that 10 members of the Gemila Bheemanu Dora family had held land titles and passbooks for the grabbed lands as of 202223. He alleged that during Jagananna Resurvey, YSRC leaders colluded with officials and took titles and passbooks of these lands in the names of former sarpanch Tamatapu Satyanarayana and others. Following a complaint filed with district collector, former RDO H.K. Jayaram of Narsipatnam inspected the contested tribal lands and classified the land given to non-tribals as disputed. Chinnabbai said despite this classification, titles and passbooks issued to non-tribals have remained active, causing worries within the tribal family members who are the true owners. Tribal leaders V.V. Nookaraju and Gammila Gangaraju warned that if titles awarded to non-tribals are not cancelled immediately, they will stage a protest at the district collector's office. CPM district executive member K. Govinda Rao requested district authorities to take swift action in the matter.

Rs 259 Crore Project Announced for Water-Deficient North Vizag
Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has proposed a Rs 259 crore project to augment drinking water supply to localities in northern parts of the city, including Madhurawada, which face a perennial shortage. Disclosing this on Wednesday, GVMC commissioner Dr P. Sampath Kumar said the project has received approval from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana. Dr Sampath Kumar revealed that they have approached the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank affiliate, to secure funding for the first phase of the drinking water project. Interacting with media at the GVMC headquarters, he explained that Visakhapatnam receives 400 million litres per day (MLD) of water, while the actual requirement is 463 MLD. Yeleru Canal supplies 68 per cent of the water, while the remaining amount comes from sources like Gosthani and other projects. The commissioner said all the citys water pumping stations are located in the southern region, while areas like Madhurawada on the northern side, which have witnessed rapid development, face challenges, as water has to be pumped multiple times. To address this issue, GVMC has proposed a new cost-effective project under which water will be pumped from Kanithi Balancing Reservoir (KBR) to Narava Hill, covering a distance of 10 kilometres. From there, water will flow by gravity to Mudasarlova Lake, covering an additional 15 kilometres. This gravity-based system will reduce dependency on pumping and ensure adequate water supply to Madhurawada and other regions. Dr Sampath Kumar said, This initiative will help bridge the city's water deficit and ensure equitable distribution of water throughout Visakhapatnam. Further, apart from meeting the current demand, the project will support the city's future water needs. The commissioner underlined that the new project will be a better option. While there are additional reserves of water in Yeleru Canal, pumping additional water will cost around Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,300 crore annually. Instead, pumping water from KBR and then supplying it by gravity to northern parts of the city is a cost-effective plan, he pointed out.

Odisha Deputy CM orders probe into baby sale in Khaprakhol
BALANGIR: Deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo ordered a probe into the alleged sale of a newborn by a poor family in Sangurjibhata village under Balangirs Khaprakhol block after he met the babys mother on Tuesday. Singh Deo went to the village and interacted with Aruna Bati Nag, the mother, who claimed that she had gifted her newborn to some unidentified persons because she was unable to raise her six kids. It was during the interaction, the deputy CM enquired from the ANM about the child, bringing to light new facts on the whole episode. While Aruna Bati asserted she was helped by ANM Mamata Bhoi, the latter said the woman herself took the decision to send the newborn away because her impoverished condition did not allow her to raise her sixth child. Singh Deo said he had learnt about the incident from media and directed the administration for an enquiry. During our interaction, the mother said she was unable to raise six children which is why the family decided to give away the youngest one, he told mediapersons. The incident took place two weeks ago but came to light after members of the Childline lodged an FIR over the alleged sale. Aruna Bati, mother of five including two sons, had given birth to her sixth child at Sunamudi health centre on November 2. The same day, she is reported to have given away her child allegedly for adoption. It was after the ASHA visited her house and reported the matter to child development project officer (CDPO), the matter came to light. On November 13, the child welfare committee visited the village and directed lodging of an FIR. Till then, no action was taken on the matter. During Singh Deos visit, Aruna Bati said she gave away the child through the ANM. However, Bhoi said, the mother expressed her inability to take responsibility of the child and contacted her. I am not at fault. Aruna Bati contacted me. It was her decision to give away the newborn, Bhoi said. After that Bhoi is believed to have contacted a couple of Rampur village through one Alok Agrawal. The couple took the baby. When the deputy CM asked the ANM who allowed violation of the adoption norms, the latter said she was unaware of the rules. The baby, currently, is in a private hospital in Raipur. Patnagarh sub-collector Sunil Meher, Khaprakhol block development officer Bibekanand Sadangi and SDPO Sadananda Pujari accompanied Singh Deo to the village.
Odisha Police trace lodge murder accused in prison of Kerala
BERHAMPUR: Nearly a year after the decomposed body of a 35-year-old woman was found in a lodge in Ganjams Baidyanathpur, Berhampur police has solved the murder mystery by tracing the accused in a jail of Kerala. Berhampur SP Sarvana Vivek M said the murder accused, Sameedmon AS (42), was lodged in a Kerala jail in connection with an NDPS case. A team of Baidyanathpur police brought Sameedmon on a two-day remand to Odisha on Monday. On Tuesday, the accused was taken to the lodge where he recreated the scene of the murder in presence of police. Sameedmon, a resident of Kerala, also revealed the chilling details of his crime. The SP said the body of Kamanapalli Krishna Veni of Visakhapatnam was found in the lodge in a decomposed state on November 25, 2023. On being questioned, the lodge manager said Veni accompanied by a man had booked the room two days back. When the man went missing without paying the rent, the lodge staff reached the room and found the woman lying dead on the bed. Subsequently, police sent the body for autopsy and registered a murder case basing on the circumstantial evidence. During investigation, police identified the man as Sameedmon but could not trace him. Last week, the cops came to know that the accused was lodged in a Kerala jail after being arrested in a NDPS case around four months back. A team of Baidyanathpur police then went to Kerala and brought Sameedmon to Odisha. The SP said Veni and the accused were divorced but living together. During mid-2023, the womans 19-year-old son from her first marriage was arrested by Visakhapatnam police in an NDPS case. Believing that her son was arrested because of Sameedmon, who was also involved in illegal drug trade, Veni used to fight with the accused regularly. Fearing that Veni might tell police about his involvement in drug trade, Sameedmon hatched a plan to eliminate her. The accused brought the woman to Berhampur on some pretext and killed her in the lodge. After committing the crime, he returned to Kerala and became involved in ganja trade till he was nabbed by police around four months back.
Vizag police arrest four youths in gang-rape case
VISAKHAPATNAM: Within hours after receiving the complaint, the Visakhapatnam city police arrested four individuals on charges of gang-raping a woman on Tuesday. The accused were identified as Batha Vamsi (27), a final-year LLB student and worked part-time as a Swiggy delivery agent, Boddu Jagadish (27), a fellow final-year LLB student, also worked as a Swiggy delivery agent, Polipalli Anand (28), worked part-time as a cashier and the fourth accused, Davulapalli Rajesh (23), a final-year LLB student from Chepaluppada, was engaged in rod-bending works. According to police, the victim, a third-year LLB student, had been in a relationship with Vamsi for over a year. He allegedly lured her into a room at Krishna Gardens on August 13, 2024. CM Chandrababu Naidu Says Polavaram to Be Ready by 2027
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced a schedule in the state assembly on Tuesday to complete the Polavaram irrigation project works by 2027. Naidu also reiterated his ambition to take up interlinking of rivers of Godavari and Krishna to reach the water to Nagarjuna Sagar and to Bollapalli and Penakacherla. This, he said, would involve a cost of Rs 70,000 crore, and ensure water for every acre of land. This would also help avoid drought in Andhra Pradesh, the CM said while taking part in a short discussion on Polavaram and other irrigation projects in the state. Naidu said the works on the new diaphragm wall would begin in January 2025 and this would be completed by March 2026. Construction of the earth-cum-rock-fill dam gap-1 will be completed by February 2026 and December 2027. He said the works on the D-Wall and the ECRF dam would be taken up simultaneously. The dam height would be 45.72 metres. The whole project would cost around Rs 55,000 crore. Naidu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union minister for Jal Sakthi CR Patil for sanctioning Rs 12,157 crore for execution and planned completion of the Polavaram project in two years. He dwelt at length on the history of the Polavaram project since 1941. It was initially planned as a storage reservoir on the Godavari river to be built at a cost of Rs 129 crore. In 1981, then chief minister T Anjaiah laid the stone for the project. Naidu said Amaravati and Polavaram were being considered as two eyes of AP, and felt the need to develop the states long seacoast. He explained how he prevailed upon the BJP-led NDA government in 2014 to issue an ordinance for merger of seven agency mandals of Telangana into AP to help take up the Polavaram project without facing any trouble from Telangana. Naidu said that in 2014-19, We executed the Poavaram project to the extent of 72 per cent and even achieved a Guinness record for taking up 32,215 cubic meters of concrete works to lay the spill channel. He said, If our government continued to be in saddle after 2019, we could have completed the Polavaram project by 2020-21. The chief minister criticised the previous government for its failure to execute the project properly. It executed the project to the extent of only 3.84 per cent, he said and slammed it for the reverse tendering and for the change of the agency despite advice against it from the Polavaram Project Authority. He said, With no agency and officials to take care of the project for several months, the D-wall got damaged. The IIT, Hyderabad, had come up with a report to this effect. The chief minister told the house, Based on advice from experts, we are going to erect a new D-wall, which would cost Rs 990 crore. Once the Polavaram project is executed at a cost of Rs 55,000 crore including the cost for head works, land acquisition and resettlement and rehabilitation, it would help generate a new ayacut of 7.20 lakh acres and stabilize the additional ayacut in 24 lakh acres, with 80 tmc-ft of water going to Krishna river and 23.44 tmc-ft to the Visakhapatnam steel plant besides generation of 960 mw of hydro electric power. On the ambitious plan of interlinking rivers and ensuring water to every acre in the state, Naidu said that given the huge cost involved, it would be good if the Centre and the state government in public-private partnership mode could execute the project, lines similar to erection of national highways. The private agency involved in the project could be given the right to collect a toll for recovery of the money spent, for a period of 20 to 25 years, he said.
