Congress leader Digvijaya Singh likens Bihar poll results to Russia, China and North Korean elections

BHOPAL: Alleging that the Bihar election assembly election results were unfair and unacceptable, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh drew parallels between the recent polls and elections in Russia, China and North Korea, while Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's husband Robert Vadra called for a re-election. The results of Bihar are akin to the elections of North Korea, Russia and China, as the votes have gone to a single party largely, Singh said while talking to journalists in his home district Guna on Sunday. Names of 62 lakh voters were deleted from the list and 20 lakh new names were added. But the details of whose names were added and whose were deleted has never been shared with us, Singh said. The septuagenarian politicians fraud allegations on Sunday comes just two days after he had made somewhat similar statements. Even I was there in Bihar (during the poll campaigning). We could very well sense a neck-to-neck contest between the two blocs. The only point of discussions at that time in Bihar was about AIMIM and Prashant Kishores Jan Suraj Party (JSP) performance, whose votes will either of them cut more. Im of the firm view that if the NDA wins the polls with more than 140 seats, then it will be due to manipulated EVMs and manipulated voter lists, Singh had said on Friday. Around 290 km away in Indore, the Congress national general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadras husband Robert Vadra termed the election results unfair and unacceptable. People of Bihar arent happy with the results, whatever happened there occurred with Election Commissions help. No one can accept this result. Elections should be held again in Bihar and Rahul Ji (Rahul Gandhi) will meet the youth and fight for democracy. Politicians from both, the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh, had played a key role in their respective parties campaign in Bihar during the last one month. Among them the MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav, had campaigned in 25 assembly constituencies in ten districts, out of which the NDA candidates won in at least 20 seats, which meant a strike rate of 80%. Former MP BJP president and second-time MP from Khajuraho seat, VD Sharma was assigned the task of coordinating on 19 seats, out of which the BJP candidates on 17, meaning a strike rate of 89.50%. It was particularly significant, as he had been assigned the seats in the politically crucial Patna and Begusarai regions, with Begusarai particularly being known for getting polarized on caste lines.

Flawed, yet trusted: The Nitish Kumar paradox

People dont know much about Nitish Kumar, though he has been one of Indias tallest political figures for nearly two decades. Even after 18 years as chief minister, he remains a cipherhis aces held close to the chest, his moods tightly reined in, his mind rarely legible to the public. There are no reams of anecdotal literature about his likes, dislikes, whims, or temper. There is only a distant outline: a quiet strategist, but a direct communicator with the masses, a man who has attracted far more brickbats than bouquets and yetparadoxicallyearned the epithet Paltu Ram for switching alliances with unnerving frequency. Back in the 1980s, Nitish was a younger version of this same man: sober, sombre, unflappable. Neither worry nor elation creased his face. He listened more than he spoke. He was exacting, scrupulous. In personality, he was the opposite of his socialist comrade Lalu Prasad Yadav. If Lalu was the generalissimo, Nitish was the strategist in the backroom, letting his more voluble companion fill the stage. It was a rhythm that worked: together, and eventually apart, they climbed the political ladder. Yet when Bihar headed into the 2025 polls, Nitishs reputation as a serial switcher dogged him to an extent. But that was only one side of the story. In Bihar, people are convinced he is not personally corrupt. His asset disclosures over the years have helped that perception. And despite the opportunism tag, there is still trusta trust that ultimately delivered for him and the NDA on November 14. Nitish has been something of a political loner for most of his life, partly by circumstance. In youth, Lalu stole the limelight. In the Mandal era, Lalus caste did. Nitish had to start from scratch to be heard as a Kurmi leadera label he personally disliked. He was comfortable being seen as a backward-class leader; he rejected being boxed into a caste silo. All his career, Nitish has governed without ever belonging to a party with a majority of its own. Coalition politics shaped him; his frequent alliance shifts over the last decade were partly an outcome of this structural compulsion. Personal ambition played its role, too. For a time, he seemed caught in a tension between his principles and his aspiration for power beyond the chief ministers chair. That tension earned him the Paltu Ram monikeruntil the realisation dawned that it was wiser to hold on to what he already had. His journey from that resigned clarity to his redemption in 2025 is the story of Nitishs second wind. He was always the No. 2. In the 1980s, he helped Lalu become Leader of the Opposition. In 1990, he was behind Lalus ascent as chief minister. When Lalu outgrew both their boots, Nitish walked out in 1994 to form the Samata Party. Two years later, he aligned with the NDA. Even when he first became chief minister in 2000, political uncertainty shadowed himhe lasted barely a week. And even after he became No. 1 in 2005, there was always something tentative about the tenure: a coalition here, a coalition there, each term dependent on new equations. So, who is Nitish politically? He never responded to that question. If any section of Bihar understands him deeply, it is the women. In 2015, he introduced prohibitionresponding to growing demands from women who sought relief from domestic violence, alcoholism, and economic strain. His message was simple: prohibition would bring peace to homes, savings to households, safety to neighbourhoods. The reality was far more complex. Men crossed borders to drink; migrants stayed away longer; bootleggers thrived. Hundreds died from illicit liquor. Lakhs were jailedmost of them undertrialscrowding Bihars prisons. Families suffered, incomes collapsed. Yet the women did not forget who had at least tried to change their lives. Their trust only deepened because Nitish delivered elsewhere. Patna is a transformed city today. Airports in places like Purneaonce inconceivableare realities. Roads penetrate marshy districts that were long isolated. Infrastructure and agricultural improvements, along with predictable governance, became his hallmarks. He could not eliminate corruption or nepotism; he could not generate enough jobs for Bihars youth. But he couldand didensure piped drinking water, accessible roads, functioning schools, and a steady flow of central funds deployed with reasonable discipline. Bihars fondness for 'Sushasan Babu' ensures Nitish Kumar remains in the spotlight And he cultivated something rare in Indian politics: a caste-neutral, dependable female vote bank. You cannot quantify the peace inside a thatched hut at night. But those gains are real, and they matter. His flagship Jeevika self-help programme, too, deepened this trust. The network of self-help groups he nurtured became a quiet grassroots revolutionstable incomes, access to credit, and the dignity of labour for women who had never handled money. The new cash-transfer schemes fitted neatly into this ecosystem. The 10,000 cash support and the ambitious 2.5 lakh entrepreneurial fund allowed women to supplement household income in ways that reshaped rural life. In many villages, the man drives a rickshaw while the woman sells vegetables or runs a micro-enterprisesmall shifts, big consequences. Bihar remains haunted by uneven development and limited penetration of welfare schemes. Caste equations that help Nitish electorally often obstruct progress. Migration remains the peoples escape valve; the young return only to vote, preferring the higher wages outside the state. Entrepreneurship and startups are slogans that mean little in a predominantly rural society still waiting for an industrial moment. Nitish, consumed by political firefighting, has rarely had the bandwidth for deeper structural shifts. It sounds harsh, but it is true. As he prepares to take the oath againlikely for the last time, with age tightening its gripperhaps he may turn to long-term developmental paradigms instead of managing daily crises. What worked for Nitish in 2025? Those close to him say goodwill accrued over 18 years paid off. He maintained an emotional, direct bond with the masses. No empty rhetoric, no theatrical promises. He delivered what he could. Rumours about his ill health created a sympathy undercurrentan ek aakhri mauka sentiment. He apparently believes they returned that trust with a mandate. He remains one of Indias cleverest political strategistssecretive, understated, efficient. He does not threaten bureaucrats; he simply does not let them rest until the work is done. If Lalu was known to throw files, Nitish was known to clear them. His unique contribution to Bihar is twofold: infrastructure and social empowerment, beginning with women and extending to Mahadalits. His national contribution is subtler: he preserved communal peace and stayed untouched by the rhetoric around himeven within a coalition led by a party that thrives on it. As an outsider inside the BJP-led alliance, Nitish achieved what was unimaginable in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh under largely BJP rule. No one ever called him communal. No one accused him of appeasement. His politics was quietly syncretic: he facilitated the Off-Campus AMU centre in Kishanganj, and also stood with the Centre to lay the foundation stone of a grand Sita Mata Temple in Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi. It was not a contradictionit was calibration. Perhaps that is his final political lesson: you do not have to shout to be heard. Sometimes, silence itself can travel the farthest.

Thrown out of the house, disgraced, abused, and even hit: Rohini Acharya blames Tejashwi for 'quitting politics'

PATNA: Tejashwi Yadav and his close aide RJD MP Sanjay Yadav have hrown her out of the family, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter Rohini Acharya claimed on Saturday hours after announcing her decision to quit politics and disown her family. Tejashwi's sister alleged that she was disgraced, abused, and even hit when she questioned Sanjay Yadav for the party's defeat. I have no family. You can go and ask this to Sanjay Yadav, Rameez, and Tejashwi Yadav. They are the ones who threw me out of the family, Rohini Acharya told reporters in her first reaction after being asked about her 'shocking' announcement earlier in the day. Claiming that the party leadership don't want to take responsibility for the defeat in the Bihar Assembly election, Rohini Acharya said that when she called out Tejashwi Yadav's close aide Sanjay Yadav for the party's defeat, she was hrown out of the house, disgraced, abused, and even hit. They don't want to take any responsibility... The whole nation is asking why the party failed like this. When you name Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, you are thrown out of the house, disgraced, abused, and even hit, she said. Opposition leaders on why NDA swept poll in Bihar RJD suffered poorly in Bihar assembly polls as the party got just 25 seats, despite contesting on more than 140 seats in the 243-member state assembly. Earlier on Saturday, Rohini Acharya has announced to quit politics and disown her family and took all lame for the party's poor show in the polls. I'm quitting politics and I'm disowning my family ... This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do and I'm taking all the blame, Acharya said. With her disowning family, the cracks within Lalu Yadav's family have widened as her brother Tej Pratap Yadav, was expelled from both the party and family earlier this year following a controversy over his personal life. Reacting on Rohini Acharya's decision to leave family, Bihar BJP President Dilip Jaiswal said that it is the family's internal matter and not appropriate to comment on it too much. However, Dilip Jaiswal did request the family to ot break apart due to one individual and said that Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi need to save this family. This is an internal family matter of Lalu Yadav's family. I would request that the family not break apart. If the family is breaking up because of one individual, that is not appropriate. Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi need to save the family. This is a family matter, so it is not appropriate to comment too much on it, Jaiswal said. He also mentioned that Rohini Acharya donated a kidney to Lalu Yadav, urging the family to resolve the internal matter. Rohini Acharya has donated her kidney to save Lalu Yadav. Lalu Yadav's family is constantly falling apart due to the actions of one or two individuals; no one will like it. I also want to say that if a family is falling apart because of one person, it is not right. Reacting to the matter, BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, This is their family matter. It is possible that she is feeling some disappointment. I think that RJD is disintegrating, and the signs are not good. Earlier this year, Tej Pratap Yadav was expelled from the RJD and Lalu family following a controversy over his Facebook post in which he claimed to be in a relationship, sparking a public fallout with his family. The incident revived discussions around his past marital issues, including his ongoing divorce case with Aishwarya Rai, granddaughter of former Bihar CM Daroga Rai. Tej Pratap Yadav went on to launch his own party, the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD) and contested from Mahua Assembly constituency. He faced a major setback, finishing a distant third as Sanjay Kumar Singh of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured a thumping victory with a margin of 44997 votes, while RJD candidate Mukesh Kumar Raushan stood second. Rohini Acharya's decision to sever ties with her family came a day after RJD suffered a major loss in the Bihar Assembly election. The NDA's 'tsunami' swept away the opposition RJD-led Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, with the BJP emerging as the single-largest party with 89 seats, and the Janata Dal (United) finishing a close second with 85. The other allies of the ruling coalition also registered high strike rates as Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJPRV) won 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAMS) won five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha won four seats. The parties of the Mahagathbandhan, including the RJD and Congress, suffered significant setbacks, and Jan Suraaj, which had hoped for an impressive debut after its founder, Prashant Kishor, conducted an extensive campaign, failed to open its account. The ruling NDA got 202 seats, a three-fourths majority in the 243-member House. This is the second time the NDA has crossed the 200-mark in the assembly polls. In the 2010 polls, it had won 206 seats. Mahagathbandhan got just 35 seats with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) winning 25 seats, Congress 6, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) - CPI(ML)(L) - two, Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) - one and Communist Party of India (Marxist) - CPI(M) one seat. While All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won five seats, and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) got one seat.

BJP issues notice to senior leader R K Singh, two others over 'anti-party activities' day after Bihar poll results

PATNA: BJP has issued show-cause notices to former union minister and senior leader Raj Kumar Singh and two others over alleged anti-party activities, a day after Bihar assembly election results were announced. R K Singh has been suspended with immediate effect, while Ashok Agarwal and Usha Agarwal have been given a week to respond with reasons why they should not be expelled from the party. Singh, a retired IAS officer of Bihar cadre, had been critical of Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and state Health Minister Mangal Pandey after Jan Suraaj Party accused them of being involved in corruption and unlawful activities. A former union minister for power, Singh had also alleged that Bihar would incur losses of over Rs 62,000 crore if a thermal plant was awarded to the Adani group. When he raised the matter with the state government, Singh was told that everything was hunky-dory. Singh had also accused Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal of ruining the partys image and demanded clarification from him. Besides Singh, MLC Ashok Agarwal and Katihar Mayor Usha Agarwal have been issued show cause notices for their anti-party activities. You are indulging in anti-party activities. This falls within the scope of discipline. The party has taken a serious note of the matter. Your actions have caused loss to the party. Therefore, you are being suspended from the party and asked to explain within a week why you should not be suspended, the show-cause notice said. Before joining politics, Singh had served as home secretary during Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs tenure. He had joined BJP in 2013 and offered a ticket from BJP. He contested 2014 Lok Sabha election from Arrah and won. He was again elected in 2019 election from the same seat. In 2017, he was appointed as minister of power in the Narendra Modi 1.0 cabinet. In the 2024 election, he lost the seat. He, however, blamed a few leaders of the party for his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Since then, he has been critical of BJP and its leadership.

'Looking forward to joining new government,' says Chirag, reiterates Nitish Kumar 'should continue' as CM

A day after his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) put up a surprising show, winning 19 out of the 29 seats it contested in the Bihar assembly polls , Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday said he was looking forward to joining the new government under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. Addressing a press conference in Patna, Chirag charged the opposition with creating a false narrative that he was not on good terms with Nitish. Representatives of my party today met Nitish Kumar to congratulate him upon the victory. Yes, we too are looking forward to joining the government. Earlier, we used to say that we support the government but are not a part of it. But that was because we had no representation in the state legislature, he said. Replying to a query, he said, It is for the legislators to decide who should be the next CM or the deputy CM. I personally feel that Nitish Kumar should continue to head the government. Notably, Kumar's JD(U) has won 85 seats, four less than the BJP, making it the second occasion since 2020 assembly polls when the CM's party has been outperformed by its ally. Chirag, who was once seen as a bete noire of the JD(U) supremo, also blamed the opposition for the false narrative but admitted it was because I did not contest the 2020 assembly polls as an NDA partner that benefitted the RJD and it became the single largest party. But, the RJD grew arrogant thinking that the people had reposed their faith in that party. The party got done in by the arrogance. The people of Bihar had rejected the RJD and its jungle raj way back. In 2010, the party was decimated. It did better in 2015 only because of circumstances, because Nitish Kumar had joined them. And in 2020 they gained because we were not part of the NDA, said Chirag. He also profusely thanked central leadership of our alliance for giving 29 seats to the LJPRV, even though we did not have a single MLA in the outgoing assembly. Notably, the nomination papers of one candidate of LJPRV were rejected during scrutiny. Chirag said, We were written off. People were saying that we have been given challenging seats so that my party performs badly and I suffer a loss of face. Exit polls kept predicting that we will finish off with a single digit tally. But I have the same blood flowing in my veins as my late father Ram Vilas Paswan, who resurrected the party in 2014, the Union minister said with a hint of pride. Notably, the late Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party had suffered setbacks in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls when it failed to win a single seat and the founding president himself lost the pocket borough of Hajipur. A year later, the party's dismal show continued in assembly polls, which it fought in alliance with the RJD. Only three seats were won by the LJP and two of its MLAs defected to the JD(U). In 2014, the late Chirag joined the NDA, and the LJP, riding the Modi wave, bounced back, winning six of the seven seats it had contested and its founder was rewarded with a berth in the Union cabinet, after a long time. Chirags jo jeeta wohi sikandar moment: A turnaround story

PATNA: Union minister and LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan has emerged as the rising star in the 2025 assembly elections. In the previous assembly elections, Chirags party could win only one out of the 136 seats it contested. His party had no MLA in the 243-member Bihar assembly as its lone legislator joined JD(U) within months. In this election, Chirags party has won 19 seats out of the 29 it contested. By improving his partys performance compared to 2020, Chirag has consolidated his position within NDA. In 2020, his party had contested election solo but in 2025, he fought polls as part of NDA. It was offered 29 seats in NDA seat-sharing deal. Seventeen out of the 19 seats on which LJP(RV) candidates have registered their win were held by Opposition Mahagathbandhan in the 2020 elections. As Scheduled Castes constitute 19.65% of states population (about 2 crore), Chirag helped NDA cross the 200-seat mark. When LJP(RV) contested election solo in 2020, it harmed Nitish Kumars party as it fielded candidates mostly on the seats JD(U) was contesting. LJP (RV) had then coined a slogan: PM Modi se bair nahi, Nitish teri khair nahi (Have no enmity with Modi, Nitish will not be spared). As a result, JD(U) could win only 43 seats against BJPs 74. For the first time, LJP(RV) and JD(U) contested together in 2025. Given their fraught history, doubts persisted over their ability to work together. Both parties made efforts to mend their ties. Chirag toned down criticism of the Nitish-led government. The JD(U) chief also softened his stance against Chirag. Nitish visited Chirags Patna residence during Chhath apparently to give a message to JD(U) and LJP(RV) workers to work unitedly to ensure NDAs victory. Only after patch-up, Chirag concentrated on campaigning in Shahabad region, where NDA had performed poorly in 2020. With 43-year-old leaders party winning 19 seats, it may claim the deputy chief ministers post in the new government. Chirag had earlier said someone from his party may be inducted as deputy CM if NDA wins. Overwhelmed with his partys performance, Chirag said, My next objective is to see PM Narendra Modi on the post after 2029 Lok Sabha election. He said though he wanted to contest assembly polls, he dropped the idea on partys suggestion. In 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the party won all the seats it contested.

NiMo Landslide in Bihar

PATNA: The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) scored a victory for ages in the Bihar Assembly election on Friday, securing a commanding three-fourths majority. While the NDA bagged 202 seats in the 243-member assembly, the RJDCongress combine was not even close, garnering a meagre 35 seats. The drubbing pushed the alliance to the periphery of Bihars political landscape. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats, while JD(U) won 85, LJP(RV) 19, HAM 5, and RLM 4. The opposition Mahagathbandhan suffered a crushing defeat: RJD won 25 seats, Congress 6, CPI(ML) 2, and CPM 1. The BJP and JD(U) contested 101 seats each, while LJP(RV) fielded candidates in 28. Hyderabad MP Asasuddin Owaisis party All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) maintained its stronghold in Muslim dominated Bihars Seemanchal region, winning five of the 23 seats it contested in this region. AIMIMs vote share has also increased from 1.3 per cent in 2020 to 1.85 per cent in 2025. For the Congress, this election is befuddling. It marked its second-worst performance in Bihars electoral history, just short of 2010 when it won four seats in another NDA landside year. This years election recorded a historic voter turnout of 66.91% the highest since 1951. Women voters led with 71.6% participation, outpacing men (62.8%). Historically, rising turnout has triggered government change thrice in Bihar: 1967 (+7%, Congress ousted), 1980 (+6.8%), and 1990 (+5.7%, Congress again removed). But in 2025, the NDA defied that trend, delivering a blow to the Mahagathbandhan since there was no anti-incumbency against the Nitish government. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reinforced his political relevance through bold policies, including womens reservation laws and welfare schemes for economically backward classes (EBCs). Despite concerns over age and health, Nitish passed the test of endurance and public trust. JD(U) retained strong support among Kurmi-Kushwaha communities, EBCs, women, and Dalits. Women voters were decisively consolidated via initiatives like Mahila Rojgar Yojana. Unlike 2020, when Chirag Paswans LJP(RV) dented JD(U)s vote share, the 2025 polls saw complete NDA cohesion. A primarily development narrative saw the NDA storm traditional Mahagathbandhan strongholds in Magadh and Shahabad, while boosting gains in Muslim-majority Seemanchal and Kosi. It further solidified in Mithilanchal, Champaran, and Tirhut. The NDA was able to breach Muslim-dominated seats, fracturing the opposition. AIMIM and Jan Suraaj Party split votes, cracking RJDs MY (Muslim-Yadav) base. Yadavs stayed loyal to RJD, but many Muslims shifted to Nitish Kumars JD(U). At the other end of the spectrum, the Congress hit rock bottom, winning just 6 of 61 seatsdown from 19 of 70 in 2020. The people of Bihar have taken the state by storm, PM Narendra Modi told jubilant supporters in Delhi. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, set to take oath for a record 10th time, thanked voters and attributed the victory to peoples trust and the Centres support.

10th term gift to man of the moment, Nitish

PATNA: When the dust settles after Bihars high-voltage election, a singular truth will remain etched on the political map of the state: Nitish Kumar, the war veteran, still reigns supreme. At 74, the Janata Dal (United) chief is poised to take oath as chief minister for an unprecedented tenth time, steering the National Democratic Alliance to a gargantuan victory. Few leaders in modern India embody political survival like Nitish. Once taunted for shifting alliances at whim, Kumar has defied labels and fatigue alike, remaking himself to stay in tune with the states political nous. His Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana was a masterstroke, transferring Rs 10,000 each to 1.4 crore women before the polls. The strategy clickedwomen voters outnumbered men by 8.8%, sealing the NDAs fate across even the Muslim-majority Seemanchal belt. Nitishs campaign, built on welfare and welfare again, left little room for anti-incumbency. Pensions up, electricity free up to 125 units, and the promise of one crore new jobsall wrapped in the familiar pledges of development and dignity. People have bharosa (faith) in Modi and Nitish, said BJPs Vinod Tawade. Outside the JD(U) office, one banner makes the mood unmistakable: Tiger abhi zinda hai (the tiger lives on.)
