Women's World Cup: Nadine De Klerk Guides Proteas To Victory Over Bangladesh In Tense Finish
ODI World Cup: Marizanne Kapp (56) and Chloe Tryon (62) scored half-centuries and overshadowed similar efforts by Sharmin Akhter (50) and Shorna Akter (51*) as South Africa prevailed over Bangladesh by three wickets with three balls to spare in a well-fought encounter in the Women's ODI World Cup in Visakhapatnam on Monday. With eight needed from the last six balls, Nadine de Klerk, dropped at long-off by Shorna in the 49th over, sealed victory for the Proteas, hammering a four and a six in three balls, repeating a similar act against India in their previous match at the same Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. After Bangladesh elected to bat first, Sharmin Akhter, brought in for this match, scored 50 off 77 balls (6x4) to lay the foundation, while Shorna Akter hammered an unbeaten 51 off 35 (3x4, 3x6) -- the fastest fifty by a Bangladesh woman -- to give a late push. Ritu Moni blasted 19 off eight balls at the end as Bangladesh started slow but finished in a canter to post 232/6 in 50 overs. But in the end, big hitting by Kapp, Tryon, and de Klerk and dropped chances by Bangladesh helped South Africa reach 235/7 in 49.3 overs and seal their third successive win, moving up to third position behind Australia and England. Chasing a target of 233, South Africa's top order batters struggled against the Bangladesh bowlers, who applied the early squeeze. Tazmin Brits, who scored a century against New Zealand, was out for a second successive zero (a golden duck), while skipper Laura Wolvaardt scored 31 off 56 balls, raising 55 runs for the second wicket with Anneke Bosch (28). But the skipper was run out going for a second run, and South Africa lost their way, losing Bosch, Annerie Dercksen (2), and Sinalo Jafta (4) as they slipped to 78/5 in the 23rd over. Marizanne Kapp got into the rescue act and, with Chloe Tryon, raised 85 runs for the sixth wicket, playing patiently and absorbing the pressure exerted by the Bangladesh bowlers. Kapp scored 56 off 71 balls, reaching her half-century in 67 balls before she was caught by Shorna Akter off Nahida Akter, making it 163/6. Chloe Tryon, who got a life in her 40s, reached her fifty off 64 balls as she joined Nadine de Klerk, the hero of their victory over India in their last match, with the run-rate mounting. Tryon reduced the pressure with a four and a slog-sweep for six off successive balls off Rabeya Khan, raising her fifty with the four. She celebrated that with another four in the same over, struck another four to score 16 runs off the over, reducing the equation to 37 needed from 36 balls. But Tryon fell three balls later, run out while going for a single, with Ritu Moni sending in a fine throw. It was left for Nadine de Klerk to take South Africa home. She struck Fahima Khatun for two fours in the 47th over as the Proteas reached 212/7, needing 21 runs from the last three overs. Despite the dew, the Bangladesh bowlers kept piling the pressure before de Klerk did what she does better, sealed victory with a six. Earlier, it was excruciatingly slow going for Bangladesh on electing to bat first as they crawled to 100/2 in 30 overs. They reached 150 runs in 40 overs and then blasted 82 in the last 10 to reach a respectable total. Fargana Hoque (30) and Rubya Haider (25) were painstakingly slow in their approach as they shared a 53-run partnership in 16 overs, with the South Africans bowling a tight line and allowing no leeway by taking pace off the ball in overcast conditions. Both fell within 20 runs of each other. Sharmin Akhter (50) and skipper Nigar Sultana Joty continued in the same vein as they raised 77 runs for the third wicket in 15 overs. Bangladesh reached 150 in the 40th over. Joty managed to score 32 off 42 balls before being caught superbly by Laura Wolvaardt, off Mlaba, just when she was looking to give the score the push it needed badly. Sharmin raised her fifty off 74 balls, hitting six fours, but was run out three balls later following a terrible mix-up with Shorna. Shorna stayed on and provided the finishing touch to the Bangladesh innings, along with Ritu Moni, blasting three sixes and as many fours in scoring 51 not out off 35 balls. Ritu Moni played a delightful cameo, 19 not out off eight balls with three fours, a hat-trick of boundaries off Marizanne Kapp. Sharmin raised her fifty off 74 balls, hitting six fours, but was run out three balls later following a terrible mix-up with Shorna. Tej Pratap to contest Bihar polls from Mahua as his party names candidates for 21 seats
PATNA: RJD chief Lalu Prasad's elder son Tej Pratap Yadav will contest the Bihar elections from Mahua as his newly-floated party, Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD), announced candidates for 21 seats on Monday. Yadav, a former minister in the state government, floated the party after his father expelled him from the RJD in May. Our national president, Tej Pratap Yadav, will contest the assembly elections from the Mahua constituency in Vaishali district, JJD state chief Madan Yadav said, releasing the names of candidates for 21 seats. Yadav had represented the Mahua seat till 2020 when RJD shifted him to Hasanpur. The JJD fielded Sanjay Yadav in Madhepura, Taurif Rahman in Narkatiaganj, Dharmendra in Barauli, and Braj Bihari Bhatt in Kuchaikot, among others. Yadav was expelled from the RJD for six years, a day after he confessed on social media to being in a relationship with a woman named Anushka. He, however, deleted the post later, claiming that his account was hacked. Prasad also disowned him, due to his irresponsible behaviour. A few days after his expulsion, Yadav had alleged that there was a conspiracy to drive a wedge between him and his younger brother, Tejashwi Yadav. His expulsion came barely a few months ahead of the assembly polls, which the RJD is fighting under the leadership of Tejashwi. The two brothers are among the four of the nine siblings active in politics.

Rebel Congress, RJD leaders join BJP in poll-bound Bihar
PATNA: The BJP in Bihar on Monday inducted two rebel leaders of the INDIA bloc who had won the last assembly polls on tickets of RJD and Congress, but had been sitting with members of the NDA inside the assembly after JD(U) of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar joined it in 2024. State BJP president Dilip Jaiswal welcomed into the party Sangita Kumari, who last week resigned from her Mohania seat she had won as an RJD nominee, besides Siddharth Saurav, a two-term Congress MLA from Bikram. According to a statement issued by the assembly secretariat, Saurav resigned from his seat on Monday. I had recently said that nearly half a dozen MLAs of the INDIA bloc are going to jump ship. Today is the first instalment, Jaiswal told reporters on the occasion. Altogether six MLAs, four of the RJD and two of the Congress, had crossed over to the NDA when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar won a trust vote after forming a new government with the BJP in January 2024. Pleas by the respective parties for their disqualification remained pending before Speaker Nand Kishor Yadav. Jaiswal also re-inducted Sunil Kumar Pintu, a former MP from Sitamarhi who had joined the JD(U) in 2019, as per the BJP's instance, after the official JD(U) candidate pulled out of the contest ahead of Lok Sabha polls. Before getting elected to the Lok Sabha, Pintu was the MLA from Sitamarhi and he had been in a sulk ever since the JD(U) did not consider him for a ticket in last year's parliamentary polls, when his seat went to Devesh Chandra Thakur, the then Chairman of the state legislative council. Another person to join the BJP was Sujit Kumar, husband of Swarna Singh, the MLA from Gaura Bauram, who took voluntary retirement from the Indian Revenue Service. Swarna Singh had won the seat on a ticket of Vikassheel Insaan Party, then an NDA constituent, but joined the BJP when founding president Mukesh Sahni was ousted from the coalition. Meanwhile, BJP sources said they were looking forward to joining of the remaining rebel MLAs of the Congress-RJD combine, some of whom have already resigned their membership of the assembly.
Tea blossoms have health benefits, says Nagaland University study
GUWAHATI: Not just tea, tea blossoms that are often discarded as agricultural byproducts, also have health benefits, a multi-institute research, led by the Nagaland University, has found. The study shows that these delicate flowers are abundant in potent bioactive compounds, positioning them as a natural source for health supplements and functional beverages. While tea leaves dominate global research and consumption, blossoms remain largely overlooked. This study is the first systematic effort in Assam, one of the worlds largest tea-producing regions, to analyse the biochemical richness of tea blossoms from seven premium cultivars. Nutraceutical companies could harness tea blossom extracts to create natural energy boosters, relaxation aids, and skin-health products. Beyond consumer health, the research offers economic opportunities for smallholder tea farmers by opening new revenue streams through blossom collection and processing, the Nagaland University said in a statement. This approach, the statement added, also advances environmental sustainability, as utilising blossoms reduces agricultural waste and contributes to a circular bioeconomy. With global demand rising for plant-based, eco-friendly health products, India has the chance to position itself as a leader in functional foods and supplements derived from tea blossoms, the statement said. Dr Sagarika Das from the Centre for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Dibrugarh University fronted this research, collaborating with tea biochemist Monoranjan Goswami from the Tocklai Tea Research Institute in Jorhat, Assam, and Prof Tanmoy Karak from the Department of Soil Science at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University. The study garnered contributions from institutions, including the University of California and the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute in New Delhi, showcasing an extraordinary alliance in the pursuit of scientific excellence. The findings were published in a peer-reviewed journal, Food Research Journal. Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of the Nagaland University, said the research highlighted the potential of innovation originating from the region to effect significant global change. By tapping into the often-overlooked benefits of tea blossoms, our dedicated scientists are pioneering advancements in health and wellness that could revolutionise dietary supplements and natural remedies, he said. The research team has plans to advance into clinical trials, explore synergies with other nutraceuticals, and scale up for industrial applications across the food, pharmaceutical, and wellness sectors. Das said, Tea blossoms are known to be abundant in health-enhancing compounds, featuring notably higher concentrations of polyphenols, catechins, terpenoids, and L-theanine, while also having lower caffeine levels compared to traditional tea leaves.

Women's World Cup: Fifties By Sharmin, Shorma Help Bangladesh Reach 232/6 V South Africa
ODI World Cup: Contrasting half-centuries by Sharmin Akhter and Shorma Akter and a fiery cameo by Ritu Moni helped Bangladesh post a competitive 232/6 in their 50 overs against South Africa in the Women's ODI World Cup at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Sharmin Akhter scored 50 off 77 balls (6x4) to lay the foundation, while Shorma Akter hammered an unbeaten 51 off 35 (3x4, 3x6) to give late impetus. Ritu Moni blasted 19 off eight balls at the end as Bangladesh started slow but finished in a canter to post a respectable total. It was excruciatingly slow going for Bangladesh on electing to bat first as they crawled to 100/2 in 30 overs with Sharmin Akhter and skipper Nigar Sultana Joty holding fort in the middle-overs. Fargana Hoque (30) and Rubya Haider (23) were painstakingly slow in their approach as Bangladesh reached 28 for no loss in 10 overs of mandatory Power-play, managing to hit only three boundaries. The South African also kept things quiet by bowling a tight line and allowing no leeway. They took the pace off the ball and used the overcast conditions well to make things difficult for the Bangladesh batters. Fargana Hoque and Rubya Haider shared a 53-run partnership for the opening wicket in 16 overs, but both fell within 20 runs. Hoque was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba, while Haider was caught by Nadine de Klerk off Chloe Tryon. Sharmin Akter (50) and skipper Nigar Sultana Joty continued in the same vein as they shared a 77-run partnership for the third wicket in around 15 overs as Bangladesh reached 150 in the 40th over. Sharmin Akter completed her fifty off 74 balls, hitting six fours, but was run out due to a terrible mix-up with her skipper. Joty managed to score 32 off 42 balls before she was caught superbly by her opposite number, Laura Wolvaardt, off Mlaba, just when she was looking to give the score the push it needed badly. Bangladesh were down to 164/4. Shorna Akter showed some urgency, hitting the first six of the innings with a miscue over long-on off Tryon after a delightfully executed sweep for four off Mlaba. She hammered Tumi Sekhukhune for a six and followed that up with a thick-edged four over the keeper's head. Another four over mid-off, though not from the middle of the bat, and a single and a double fetched Bangladesh 18 runs from the 46th over, their most productive one. Though a double blow at 195 as Sobhana Mostary (9) and Rabeya Khan (0) fell within two balls threw a spanner in the works for them, a hat-trick of boundaries by Ritu Moni off Marizanne Kapp and another six by Shorma helped them reach a respectable total. Three STF personnel injured in IED blast in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur
BIJAPUR: Three personnel of the Special Task Force (STF) were injured when a pressure Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Naxalites went off in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Monday, police said. The incident took place at a forest in Kandlaparti village under Bhopalpatnam police station area when a team of STF, a unit of the state police, was out on an area domination operation, a police official said. Smaller NDA allies in Bihar express resentment over seat-sharing formula
PATNA: Differences among the constituents of the ruling NDA in Bihar have once again come to the fore after the seat-sharing arrangements were announced for the upcoming assembly elections. Smaller allies Hindustani Awam Morcha, headed by Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha of Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha, which got six seats each, have expressed their resentment over the seat-sharing formula. The ruling NDA on Sunday announced seat sharing for the elections to the 243-member assembly, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) and the BJP deciding to contest 101 constituencies each, and leaving the rest for smaller allies. Union minister Chirag Paswan will field candidates of his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in 29 seats. Commenting on the seat-sharing arrangements, Manjhi told reporters on Sunday, What the high command has decided, we have accepted. But by giving us just six seats, they have underestimated us. It may cost the NDA in the elections. Similarly, Kushwaha, in a late-night post on X, addressed his party workers after seat sharing was announced, and wrote, Dear friends/colleagues, I seek your forgiveness. The number of seats we got is not as per your expectations. I understand that this decision will hurt those colleagues who aspired to be candidates of our party. Today, in many homes, food might not have been cooked. However, I am sure you all understand the constraints and limitations of both me and the party. I humbly request you to let the anger subside, and then you will yourself realise how appropriate or inappropriate the decision is. Time will tell the rest, he added. Manjhi, who had been insisting on at least 15 seats on the grounds that he needed to win eight for his party to get ecognised, left for Patna just before the formula was announced in the national capital, but stopped short of coming out in revolt. This is the first time that the two top constituents of the NDA in the state are contesting an equal number of seats. In Patna, state Congress spokesperson Rajesh Rathor took a jibe at the NDA, alleging that he seat-sharing arrangement makes it clear that the BJP has cut Nitish Kumar to size. Ever since the two parties have been allies, this is for the first time that the JD(U) will not be contesting a higher number of seats than the BJP, in an assembly election. It is a clear signal that in the days to come, the BJP will devour the JD(U), he added.

Two RJD MLAs resign, may join Nitishs party
PATNA: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) suffered a significant blow on Sunday as two of its MLAs resigned ahead of the Bihar polls amid speculation that they could join CM Nitish Kumars JD(U). Vibha Devi, the RJD MLA from Nawada and Prakash Veer, the MLA from Rajauli, submitted their resignations to Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav, severing ties with the party. The resignations came after RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadavs departure to Delhi and have further deepened the internal strife within the party. The RJD is grappling with contentious seat-sharing arrangements and growing discontent among party workers and leaders. Devis husband Raj Ballabh Yadav was a former MLA and recently walked out of jail, following an acquittal by the Patna High Court in a POCSO case for which he spent several years behind bars. Devi had won the seat in the 2020 elections on an RJD ticket, and her resignation is seen as a major loss for the party in the Nawada region, where her family holds significant influence.

Captain Alyssa Healy: Captain Alyssa Healy struck a magnificent century, blasting 142 off 107 balls, the highest score ever against India, while Annabel Sutherland grabbed 5-40 as Australia scampered to a three-wicket victory in a crucial match in the Women's World Cup in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. Healy, who slammed a record-breaking 21 fours and three sixes, scored her third World Cup hundred and first ODI hundred since January 2025 (sixth overall) as Australia reached 331/7 with six balls to spare. They outperformed Indian openers Smriti Mandhana (80 off 667 balls) and Pratika Rawal (75 off 96), who shared an opening partnership of 155 runs. But India suffered a collapse in the last five overs and could manage only 330 all out, when they looked good for 400 at one stage. It was a record-breaking effort from both teams as Mandhana and Rawal (75) put up the biggest opening partnership against Australia; Mandhana became the fastest to reach 5000 runs (112 matches) in Women's ODIs. India posted the highest total against Australia in ODIs, surpassing 298 by England. The Aussies then hammered 82 for no loss in 10 overs for the highest score in the Power-play in Women's ODIs and scripted the biggest successful chase. This was India's second successive defeat in the World Cup after the loss to South Africa on October 9 as they slipped to third in the standings, ahead of the Proteas on NRR. Australia continued at the top of the table with seven points from four matches, with England in second spot with six points from three matches. The Indians put up a late fight, with N. Shree Charani (3-41), Amanjot Kaur (2-68), and Deepti Sharma (2-52) claiming crucial wickets in the death overs to make it a close affair. Shree Charani removed Australia captain Healy, caught by a brilliant effort by Sneh Rana just centimetres above the ground, for a brilliant 107-ball 142, sharing crucial partnerships with Phoebe Litchfield (40 off 39, 6x4, 1x6) and an 89-run stand for the second wicket before Ellyse Perry was retired hurt, to put Australia on course to victory. Healy hammered the two openers and scored at will in the middle-overs as the Indian bowlers failed to cut down on pace and allowed her to reverse sweep and use the short-arm jab effectively. Chasing a massive target of 331, the Australian skipper had stitched another half-century partnership with Ashleigh Gardner (45, 46 balls, 3x4, 1x6) as the defending champions crossed the 250-run mark. But with Australia on 265/3, Charani weaved her magic and got Healy out to open the gate for India. Amanjot Kaur claimed two wickets in successive balls spread over two overs, sending back Sophie Molineux (13) and Ashleigh Gardner (45) after Deepti Sharma had trapped Tahlia McGrath (12) as Australia slumped to 303/7 in the 45th over. But Ellyse Perry, who returned to the crease after recuperating from cramps, along with Kim Garth (14 not out), guided Australia to a memorable win with six balls to spare. Perry remained unbeaten on 47 off 52 balls (5x4, 1x6) as she sealed victory with a six off the last ball of the 49th over. Earlier, India failed to capitalise on a solid platform provided by openers Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal. With Mandhana finding form right on time after scoring 54 runs in the first three matches, and Pratika scoring her maiden half-century in the World Cup, India raced to 192/1 in 30 overs. However, the hosts succumbed to the lure of big hits and some superb bowling by the Australians, especially Annabel Sutherland, who claimed 5-40, and lost nine wickets for 138 runs and were bundled out for 330 runs in 48.5 overs. India lost their last six wickets for 36 runs and failed to play their full quota of 50 overs. And that came to haunt them as Australia secured a victory in a crucial match at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. Harleen Deol (38 off 42), Jemimah Rodrigues (33), and Richa Ghosh (32) made vital contributions, but none of them could stay at the wicket and score a 50 or 60 to help India make the most of the death overs. HAM alloted only six seats for Bihar polls; patron Jitan Ram Manjhi says 'NDA may face consequences'
PATNA: After his party was allotted six seats in the National Democratic Alliances (NDA) seat share deal for Bihar elections, Union Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) patron Jitan Ram Manjhi on Sunday asserted that NDA might face repercussions as his party was undervalued by the ruling alliance. While talking to the media, Manjhi said, What the high command decided, we accept, but by giving six seats, they have undervalued us; it may have repercussions in NDA. While he expressed his discontent, he said that he is not unhappy. In Parliament, we were given one seat, we were still happy. Here, we have been given six seats, and we respect the decision of the leadership, Manjhi added. On Chirag Paswan's LJP (RV) getting 29 seats, Manjhi said, Others can understand what they received, but we are satisfied with what we have been allotted, and we have no complaints. Manjhi had demanded 15 seats in the deal as it could have ensured HAM getting the status of a recognised party. He claimed that if HAM contested 15 seats, the party could potentially win 78 seats and achieve the necessary 6 per cent vote share across the state, even without winning every seat. Under the seat-sharing formula, BJP and JD(U) will contest 101 seats each, Chirag Paswans LJP(RV) 29, HAM and Rashtriya Lok Morcha led by Upendra Kushwaha six seats each. Kushwaha had earlier expressed his discontent over the seat-sharing arrangements within NDA.

Bihar polls: AIMIM hints at formation of third front, announces 32 candidates
PATNA: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has released a list of 32 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar and has hinted at the formation of a third front, a move that could significantly impact the Oppositions INDIA bloc. AIMIM Bihar chief Akhtarul Iman stated that the party would field candidates from multiple constituencies, including Kishanganj, Purnea, Katihar, Araria, Gaya, Motihari, Nawada, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Siwan, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Vaishali, and Gopalganj. Interestingly, most of the seats where AIMIM plans to field candidates are currently held by members of the INDIA bloc. AIMIM had attempted to prevent the division of secular votes and unite against communal forces, but the larger coalition partners didnt cooperate, resulting in the formation of a third front, Iman asserted. He added that the party has released the list of 32 candidates out of the 100 seats it intends to contest in the 2025 assembly elections. The names of the candidates for the announced seats will be revealed soon, he said. Will join INDIA alliance in Bihar if AIMIM gets to contest six seats: Owaisi The AIMIM state president recalled that during the 2020 assembly elections, the party was accused of splitting secular votes. It is well known that we had written to RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav seeking an alliance ahead of the 2025 assembly polls but received no response, he added. In the 2020 assembly election, AIMIM fielded candidates in 20 seats and won five. This performance was seen as having impacted the Grand Alliance, comprising the RJD, Congress, and Left parties. However, four of AIMIMs MLAs later switched over to the RJD, leaving Akhtarul Iman as the partys lone representative in the state assembly. AIMIM had contested the 2020 election in alliance with Mayawatis BSP and Upendra Kushwahas RLSP. The party had influenced the performance of Opposition parties in several constituencies. Kushwaha later joined the BJP-JD(U)-led NDA and formed a new party called the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM). In the 2025 assembly election, RLM has been offered six seats. Muslims account for nearly 18 percent of the states population of over 13 crore, according to the 202223 state census.

The decision to name a stand after Mithali and the gate in honour of Kalpana at the ACA-VDCA Stadium was taken by the Andhra Cricket Association last week. The decision came after star batter Smriti Mandhana made a request during the Breaking Boundaries fireside chat with Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh in August 2025, where she highlighted the absence of stadium stands named after leading Indian women cricketers, including at Visakhapatnam. Mandhana felt that the renaming of such stands would honour the contribution of women cricketers, while also spotlighting their contributions to the game. It would also inspire the next generation of women to enter cricket as a profession. Acting on Mandhanas appeal, Minister Nara Lokesh immediately consulted the Andhra Cricket Association, leading to a prompt resolution to honour the womens cricket icons by naming stands after them at the Vizag venue. Bihar elections: Poll time, party hoppers return to their elements
PATNA: Leaders from various parties are shifting their loyalties with the objective of contesting Bihar polls themselves or ensuring their children enter the fray on tickets of their new parties. On Saturday, former Jehanabad MP Arun Kumar, who has been a critic of CM Nitish Kumar, returned to JD(U) along with his son Rituraj and some supporters. Rituraj is expected to contest from Ghosi in Jehanabad on a JD(U) ticket. Arun Kumar, 66, belongs to Bhumihar upper caste with political influence in the Magadh region. Political observers say his re-induction into JD(U) is likely to offset the damage that may have been caused by another Bhumihar leader from Jehanabad, Rahul Sharma, joining the RJD on Friday. Another turncoat is Sanjeev Kumar, who recently joined RJD by dumping JD(U). He had won from Parbatta in 2020 and RJD is expected to field him from the same seat this time. Politician Anand Mohans son Chetan Anand, elected on RJD ticket from Sheohar in 2020, is expected to contest on JD(U) ticket. Chetan had cross-voted during the floor test faced by Nitish on February 12, 2024. Neelam Devi, wife of another strongman-turned politician Anant Singh, won a bypoll on an RJD ticket but like Chetan, she also voted along with NDA during the floor test. Anant may contest Mokama on JD(U) ticket.
Bihar polls: NDA flip-flop, may announce seat-share deal in Delhi on Sunday
PATNA: The seat-sharing deal within the ruling NDA has been deferred for a day and it will be announced jointly by all its five constituents in Delhi on Sunday, Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal said on Saturday. Jaiswal had earlier said the NDA seat-sharing formula would be announced by Saturday evening. A final decision on the seat-sharing pact has to be taken by the central leadership of the BJP, he said. Dismissing reports of discontent within the alliance over seats for Bihar assembly elections, Jaiswal said, Everything is fine in the NDA... seat-sharing arrangements and the list of candidates will soon be decided by the partys central leadership, which will make important announcements related to seats and tickets at 11 am on Sunday. Sources said the announcement has been deferred for a day due to Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhis dissatisfaction over the number of seats offered to the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM). Majhi had earlier said HAM may not contest the elections if 15 seats were not allotted to the party. A HAM leader said, We are seeking opinion of partys senior leaders on seats. The second option not to contest election is also open. BJP sources said Union Home Minister Amit Shah huddled at BJP chief JP Naddas residence in Delhi earlier in the day to discuss seat sharing among NDA partners. The seat sharing formula with the JD(U) and LJP (Ram Vilas) has almost been finalised while discussions were on with HAM and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM).
Bihar polls: Congress, RJD agree to disagree on 5 seats
PATNA: RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav left for Delhi on Saturday evening, a day after a meeting of the partys central and state parliamentary boards was held in Patna to discuss seat-sharing formula among INDIA bloc partners for Bihar polls. Tejashwi has gone to Delhi with a message from RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav. He is expected to meet senior leaders of Congress, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. The leaders of two major allies will take a final call on seat-sharing arrangements in the Opposition bloc, a senior RJD leader said. Sources said the RJD and Congress were jostling over five seatsBaisi, Bahadurganj, Raniganj, Kahalgaon and Saharsawhich has reportedly delayed the announcement of a seat-sharing pact. The Congress had contested Kahalgaon and Bahadurpur in 2020 and RJD fought in Saharsa, Baisi and Raniganj, but both failed to win any of them. The Congress, which has given two seats from its quota to the India Inclusive Party (IIP), initially decided to hand over Saharsa to its ally. The RJD has now staked claim on the seat, sources said. The Congress staked claim on Kahalgaon seat, mostly won by the party in previous elections. Last year, the Congress contested but the BJP won the seat. The RJD, the sources said, has sought to contest from this seat but the Congress is unwilling to part with it. Besides, the Congress seeks to field its candidates from Baisi and Bahadurganj of Seemanchal region, citing its performance in the Muslim-dominated area in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress has now three MPs, including Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, in Kishanganj, Katihar and Purnia in Seemanchal. In 2020 assembly polls, Asasuddin Owaisi-led AIMIM won Baisi and Bahadurpur seats. The MLAs later jumped ship to RJD. Sources said RJD is reluctant to part with Raniganj, despite losing it in 2020. Leaders from both sides are holding rounds of meetings over the seats concerned to arrive at an agreement, the sources added. The two major allies are already facing tensions over the Opposition groupings choice of chief ministerial candidate. Meanwhile, the RJD has been declaring Tejashwi as the face.
