NDA seeks ED probe after Lalu plans to change house
PATNA: The troubles facing RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and his family seem to be far from over, as the NDA government has demanded an ED probe into the assets accumulated by the family. The development follows the familys decision to move into a new house in Mahuabagh locality of Danapur in Patna, after Lalus wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi was asked to vacate her official residence. Rabri Devi was allotted the bungalow at 10, Circular Road in 2006 following the tenure as Chief Minister. It was allotted to her in the capacity of LoP in the legislative assembly. After the NDA won the assembly polls in the state, Rabri Devi, who is also the LoP in the state legislative council, was assigned a new bungalow at 39 Hardinge Road. State BJP spokesperson Neeraj Kumar shared a post, stating, Lalu Yadavs social justice and socialism have remained limited only to dynasty politics and family justice. The luxurious mansion being built in Mahuabagh in Patna is also being constructed on looted land. There too, people had taken land in exchange for jobs In contrast, JD(U) chief spokesperson and MLC Neeraj Kumar claimed that Lalus mansion is grander than Golghar (a historical Patna monument). He also accused Lalu of building the mansion with allegedly disproportionate wealth. Regarding the notice issued to Rabri Devi to vacate her official residence, state RJD president Mangani Lal Mandal said, The only reason behind this is politics; the Lalu family is being humiliated... Senior RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui said, If Rabri Devi has to move out of 10 Circular Road, she would be better off shifting to the new private bungalow in Danapur. Mandal added that the party would oppose the governments move to evacuate Rabri and her family from 10, Circular Road bungalow in which they have been living for last 19 years.

From teen in RSS shakha to Speaker's Chair: Bihar BJP leader Prem Kumar's long journey
PATNA: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Prem Kumar was elected unanimously as Bihar Assembly Speaker on Tuesday, a day after he filed his nomination papers for the post. Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav announced Kumars election as the 18th Speaker of the Bihar Assembly. Soon after the formal announcement, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav escorted 70-year-old Prem Kumar to the Speakers chair amid clapping from both treasury and opposition benches in the House. This is the first time since 2015 that the Speaker has been elected unopposed. Prem Kumar, who won for a record ninth time from Gaya Town assembly constituency, later said that he would give equal treatment to the ruling dispensation and the Opposition in the House. For the chair, both Treasury and Opposition benches are equal. There will be no disparity at all, he added. He said that the House should be a place for meaningful discussions that contribute to Bihars development. Later chief minister Nitish Kumar and LoP Tejashwi Yadav congratulated Prem Kumar for being elected as new Speaker. Nitish said, I request all the members to cooperate with him in the smooth conduct of the House. Before his election as Speaker, Kumar had served in various capacities, including as minister and LoP since 1990. Prem Kumars political journey started from Dulhinganj locality of Gaya town where he used to attend RSS sponsored shakhas. Hailing from the Dhanuk caste, which is part of the OBC, Prem Kumar later became a member of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). His schoolmate Prabhat Kumar Sinha recalled that Prem Kumar was sent to jail during the 1974 movement. After spending eight months in Gaya central jail, he was released on bail. However, he continued his fight against the Emergency imposed by the Congress in 1977. After the Emergency, he joined the BJP and was appointed as district general secretary of Gaya. He worked for strengthening the party at block and panchayat levels, which drew senior leaders attention, and he was fielded as the BJP candidate from Gaya in the 1990 assembly polls. He emerged victorious in the elections and since then he has never lost from the seat. It is hard to believe that a teen-aged boy who used to attend RSS sponsored shakhas in the premises of Mahavir High School and Azad Park is now Speaker of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha. It is a journey full of dedication, perseverance and organisational skill, said Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Gaya.

INTERVIEW | 1 extra week not enough, BLOs scramble to meet deadline
They want to remove people who they believe will not vote for them, DMK MP Kanimozhi tells TNIE , interpreting the statement of Home Minister Amit Shah the SIR exercise is to purify electoral rolls. Excerpts: The Election Commission has extended the deadline for submitting SIR forms by a week. Is it enough? It is not sufficient. We need more time. Many people travel, and not everyone lives in their birthplace; they often return home to vote. With such short notice, they may not be able to return on time, and in states like Tamil Nadu, the administration and the government are also battling the monsoons. TN was among the first to approach the Supreme Court seeking a halt to the SIR process. Why? We are challenging the constitutionality of the entire process. This exercise effectively strips people of their voting rightsa fundamental constitutional right. Another major concern is the rushed timeline. The previous SIR exercise took more than six months. If the government were serious, it could have announced it earlier, properly trained officials, and allowed sufficient time to verify and rectify. It doesnt end with losing voting rights. This will lead to mass disenfranchisement. If people are excluded from the rolls now, will they later be treated as non-citizens? What are the consequences of that? There is also the issue of delimitation. Once rolls shrink, the number of seats allocated to states will be affected. If lakhs of names are removed from the rolls, states stand to lose even more representation. What are the concerns youre hearing from the ground in TN? There is inhuman pressure on the BLOs. Weve already seen SIR-related BLO deaths reported across states. BLOs are overworked. They have been given this additional burden without adequate time for training. Has the state government taken steps to mitigate the woes of the BLOs? We are doing everything possible, including bringing in volunteers and providing additional help, wherever necessary. There is only so much pressure we can alleviate. In many households, especially in rural areas, no one is at home during the day. Even in cities, both adults often work. Reaching people under these conditions is not easy. Another problem is that 2002 to 2004 was used as the baseline year for the voter rolls. Most people would not have those documents readily available. How can we expect everyone to produce them? Amit Shah says the SIR is to purify voter rolls and remove illegal immigrants. This is exactly what they want. They want to remove people who they believe will not vote for them, people they do not want included in their idea of this country. Anyone they consider not eligible, according to their own standards, is being targeted. In their view, this becomes another form of cleansing. But this notion of cleansing itself is deeply troubling and difficult to comprehend. TN is heading to elections shortly. Do you think the SIR process will have an impact on the results? We are being extremely vigilant. Our party leadership is on the ground, working to ensure that things proceed correctly. We have learnt lessons from the Bihar elections. Minority communities are even more vigilant, and we are trying to ensure that no one is left out. But anything happening beyond our control is outside our scope. The CJI has raised a key question: If an intruder obtains an Aadhaar card, should that person automatically be allowed to vote? How will state governments tackle such concerns? They say Aadhaar is no proof of citizenship. The EC needs additional proof. States have no say in determining citizenship, the onus lies with the MHA. The Bihar election went ahead though the SC was still hearing the SIR case. So, apart from pursuing legal remedies, what other avenues are you mulling? Our party leaders and cadres are on the ground as registered agents, doing everything to ensure nothing goes wrong, and no one is denied voting rights. But the onus is entirely on the EC to ensure that the process is fair and transparent. The AIADMK has gone to the SC in favour of the SIR. Will it impact the case? They are behaving like a B-team, echoing their masters voice. In this case, the master is BJP, and AIADMK is not just reflecting that voice, it is also amplifying it even louder. How do you see the SCs reply to the presidential reference on timelines for the president and governor? Is it a setback to TN and other opposition states? We have repeatedly said that the BJP uses governors as political tools. Although the President appoints the governors, they dont act as impartial constitutional authorities. Instead, they often behave like opposition leaders, creating obstacles for non-BJP governments in various states. This is something we must seriously examine. The DMK has consistently maintained that we do not need governors, and it is high time we reconsider this position. People need to understand why a governor who acts against the will of the people is unnecessary. As Chief Minister M K Stalin has clarified, the SC opinion in response to the presidential reference will not affect the April 8, 2025 verdict in the case of State of Tamil Nadu vs. Governor of Tamil Nadu. Do you think the INDIA bloc needs to be strengthened after the Bihar results? There have been many voices coming out criticising Congress. The opposition must remain strong, and it is our duty to safeguard democracy and uphold its secular character. The DMK is unequivocal in its commitment to protecting Indias secular democracy. CM Stalin wrote a letter to PM Modi expressing anguish over the rejection of the proposals for Metro Rail systems in Coimbatore and Madurai. Yes. We have similar projects in other cities, such as Agra and Patna. But in our case, they claim that there isnt enough population to justify certain measures. Both Coimbatore and Madurai have large floating populations. People come there from across the country for business, education, and to visit temples. This clearly would have warranted different considerations. Its unfair to apply two different yardsticks in this way.

'Alliance with Mahagathbandhan was only for Bihar elections': Bihar Congress chief
PATNA: Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar on Monday clarified that the grand old partys alliance with Opposition Mahagathbandhan , a part of INDIA bloc, was only for Bihar assembly elections and that the party would now focus on strengthening the organisation. Kumar was talking to the media after a crucial meeting with all district presidents and officer bearers frontal organisations. It was the first meeting with district level leaders after the partys drubbing in the state assembly election. His statement has given rise to speculation that Congress may break away from the Opposition alliance in near future. We discussed on four issues at todays meeting, including factors for partys poor performance in Bihar elections, proposed agitation against vote theft in New Delhi, election of leader of legislative party and coordination within the party during election, the state president said. A section of leaders has already advocated for breaking away its alliance with the ally-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)- and go solo next elections. Mondays meeting assumed significance in the wake of a series of review meetings in Delhi to ascertain the reasons for the partys debacle in Bihar polls. Bihar election results show 'vote chori' on 'gigantic scale', says Congress On Saturday, senior leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met partys six newly elected MLAs from Bihar in New Delhi. During the meeting, the leaders discussed on possibility of restructuring within the state unit. The leaders also conveyed mounting pressure from within the state unit to snap ties with RJD. Congress legislature party leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan said that the review meeting is part of a broader assessment of the partys strategy in Bihar following its poor electoral performance in the recently held assembly polls. Khan, however, admitted that most of the candidates, who lost in the assembly polls, said that they would have done better had they not allied with RJD. It is up to the party high command to decide what should be the future strategy, he told the media. A large section of candidates, during feedback session with Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi last week, argued that 'an over aggressive stand by RJD' made lakhs of voters to turn away from Mahagathbandhan candidates, fearing a return of 'jungle raj' of Lalu-Rabri era.

After Delhi blast connection, Nuh linked to MP cybercrimes
BHOPAL: Haryanas Nuh district, which is under glare as an operational base of the white-collar terror module linked to 10/11 Delhi blast case, has also come out as the nucleus of Madhya Pradeshs biggest-ever inter-state cybercrime ring. MP polices cybercrime unit has traced masterminds of the racket to Nuh. The cyber fraud ring involved over 1000 bank accounts of people in Vindhya and Mahakoshal region of MP, being used as mule accounts to park and circulate fraud money. More than 25 people from MP, Haryana and Bihar have been arrested and charge-sheeted. As the investigations progress, its becoming clear that operatives based in Nuh are the masterminds of the racket. They sourced SIM cards and mule accounts mostly from MP and used them for their inter-state racket, said a MP police involved in the probe. The men in Nuh operated an illegal call centre at a flat in Gurugram, which was used to make calls to people for duping them. The SIM cards, sourced by operatives in MP and other states, reached the kingpins through middlemen based in Patna. The mule bank accounts served as the pipeline through which more than Rs 3,000 crore was routed. The funds were actually proceeds of cybercrimes committed in various parts of the country, religious charity money as well as money from unknown sources suspected to have been used possibly for terror funding. Large sum of money was routed through mule accounts to the Middle East, the officer added. The fraudsters also operated shell companies in Hyderabad and parts of Maharashtra. The 25-plus men arrested over the last 11 months have been charge-sheeted. Now we are going to zero in on the racket masterminds in Nuh, he said. Years back it was Jamtara in Jharkhand, but crackdown saw newer hotspots in West Bengal. Over last couple of years Nuh and adjoining Rajasthan districts have emerged as the cybercrime hub, SP (cybercrime cell) Pranay Nagwanshi said.

BHOPAL:The Nuh district of Haryana has emerged as an alleged hideout, operational base for sourcing materials and recruitment ground for the white collar modules operatives. This comes against the investigations' progress into the white-collar terror module and the 10/11 Delhi blast case. The same southeastern Haryana district has also turned out to be the nucleus of Madhya Pradeshs biggest-ever inter-state cyber crime ring, which was busted by the police in early 2025. As the MP polices cyber crime unit accelerates its probe into the inter-state racket, men operating from Nuh (Haryana) have emerged as the kingpins and masterminds, which is believed to be worth more than Rs 3000 crore. Anatomy of a white collar terror module The cyber fraud ring involved more than 1000 bank accounts of people in the Vindhya and Mahakoshal region of MP, being used as mule accounts to park and circulate fraud money and hundreds of SIM cards sourced from MP were used by cyber fraudsters for committing crimes across the country. More than 25 persons, hailing from MP, Haryana and Bihar, have so far been arrested and charge-sheeted in the court in MP. The men in Nuh (mostly school dropouts) operated an illegal call centre at a flat in Gurugram, which was used to make calls to people for duping them via various kinds of cyber-crimes, including job offers, gaming and cryptocurrency investment frauds, etc. The SIM cards, which were sourced by the rackets kingpins from their operatives in MP and other states, reached through middlemen based in the Bihar capital Patna. Cybercrime police bust ATM card cloning racket, nab onefrom Haryana The bank accounts, which were used as mule accounts (around 70 per cent of them were originally held by low-income people in MPs Vindhya and Mahakoshal regions), served as the pipeline through which more than Rs 3,000 crore was routed to various destinations. The funds which were rotated through these accounts were actually proceeds of cybercrime committed in various parts of the country, religious charity money, as well as money from unknown sources suspected to have been used possibly for terror funding. A large sum of money was actually routed through the mule accounts to the Middle East, a MP police officer added. The men operating from Nuh even operated shell companies/firms in Hyderabad and parts of Maharashtra. These shell firms/companies were particularly used for cyber fraud and the transfer of illicit money. The 25-plus men who have been arrested in the case over the last 11 months have already been charge-sheeted in the court. Now we are going to zero in upon the real kingpins/masterminds of the racket in Nuh, the officer maintained. As per MP police sources, its not the first time that Nuhs name has cropped up in a major cybercrime case. Nuh has gradually emerged as a prime cybercrime hotspot in the country. Years back, it was Jamtara in Jharkhand, but a sustained crackdown witnessed newer hotspots emerge in West Bengal, adjoining parts of Odisha and later some parts of western UP. But over the last couple of years, Nuh in Haryana and adjoining districts of Rajasthan have come out as the prime cyber-crime hub of India, Madhya Pradesh polices SP (state cyber crime cell) Pranay Nagwanshi said. Children are linked to cybercrime in at least three of every 3,000 cases, say experts

JSCA International Stadium Complex: As India's three-match ODI series against South Africa gets underway here on Sunday afternoon at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, India pacer Arshdeep Singh reflected on Indian batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's form and said the duo will do the talking with their bats rather than words. With Rohit and Kohli back in action after playing in the ODI series against Australia in October, the chatter has been huge over whether the veteran duo can sustain their form and fitness to feature in the 50-over World Cup two years from now. Rohit and Kohli headlined India's previous ODI assignment in Australia, considering it's the only format they play now in national colours. For now, everyones focus will be on how the duo fare against the Bavuma-led Proteas in Ranchi, Raipur and Visakhapatnam. Tejashwi Yadav named leader of 'Mahagathbandhan' in Bihar assembly
PATNA: Lawmakers of the opposition 'Mahagathbandhan' in Bihar on Saturday unanimously elected Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD as the coalition's leader in the state legislature. The decision was taken at a meeting hosted by Yadav here ahead of the five-day session of the legislature, beginning on Monday, during which all the newly elected members of the 243-strong assembly will be sworn in. Talking to reporters after the meeting, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra said, Tejashwi Yadav has been elected leader of the 'Mahagathbandhan' in the state legislature. Of course, he will also be leader of our party in the assembly. Congress MLC Samir Kumar Singh, who is also a working president of the party's state unit, said he decision on Tejashwi Yadav was unanimous. We have sufficient numbers, and he shall be the leader of the opposition as well. The 'Mahagathbandhan' was decimated in the recent assembly polls, which saw the ruling NDA retaining power by bagging 202 seats. At the meeting, members of both Houses of the legislature voiced concern over the manner in which the elections were held. These were anything but free and fair. SIR, which was first held in Bihar, remains a questionable exercise. No wonder, there is so much of political friction in a state like West Bengal, Singh said. The Congress leader added: We will continue to raise our voice inside the House on all issues concerning the people. We will confront the BJP-led coalition if it tries to backtrack on promises made during the elections. Power of Six! How the NDA succeeded in hitting the MGB out of the park in Bihar polls
