Govt schools suffer despite ministers assurances
BENGALURU: Even as Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa said on the floor of the house that no government schools will be closed, two schools, Government Higher Primary School in Chananke Gowdana Doddi and Government Lower Primary School at Moggenahalli Doddi in Chennapatna taluk have stopped functioning. Shambu Gowda, a School Development and Monitoring Committe (SDMC) member working in Chennapatna taluk who has been fighting against shutting down government schools since 2003, said, Chananke Gowdana Doddi Village school had only two kids and one teacher and Moggenahaalli Doddi school had five students and one teacher. The department officials gave this as a reason and forcefully sent the children and teachers to Honganuru KPS school a few days ago. Both the schools were more than 60 years old. However, in opposition to the governments decision, five schools including Government Lower Primary School, Hosahalli, Higher Primary Schools in Kannidoddi, Ammalli Doddi, Sante Mogenahalli and Lower Primary school in Sunna Ghatta, have continued to work. As per records, there are 77, 82, 31, 100 and 80 children in these schools respectively. T Manjunath, a resident of Sante Mogenahalli, said, Our school children will remain with our school. Students here come from extremely poor backgrounds and they cannot afford to pay school fees or van fees. In the last academic year, 40 children from our village, Sante Mogenahalli joined Karnataka Public School in Honganuru. However, do not have any school bus facility. The minister has said that they would provide free bus facility to these children to travel to KPS schools. A person who owns a van in our village drop these kids to the schools and he charges Rs 800 per month for these students. He added, In order to attract new students from government school to their KPS school, the school management of KPS Honganuru school have started providing van services only to new students. The government has already released an order to close down five of our government schools and move these kids to KPS school but we will let the school function. He reminded how the Higher Primary School in Sante Mogengalli suffered damage due to heavy rains in 2022 and the school functioned in a temple for the rest of the academic year. Manjunath asked, After writing to various political leaders frequently, we got a grant of Rs 50 lakh through which a new building of the school was constructed and it is running smoothly now. We have classes from 1 to 7 and have sufficient water and toilet facilities. The midday meals are also provided and as villagers, we have always looked for ways to improve our school.

Bihar govt plans schools in Lalu Prasads confiscated fodder scam properties
PATNA: The multi-crore fodder scam has once again come into focus after Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and State Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary announced on Saturday that government schools would be opened in buildings previously confiscated from the accused. Chaudhary told the media that action would be initiated against those involved in the Rs 950-crore Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) scam, better known as the fodder scam, and that government schools would be set up in confiscated properties. Bihar former Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad is among the prime accused in the AHD scam, which was probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Government will open schools in Lalu Yadavs property amassed through unlawful means, Chaudhary said. He noted that the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) had confiscated several of Lalu Yadavs properties, including a building near the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, also known as the Patna Zoo, in the state capital. The building is closed for several years, he remarked. The building has been locked for over 20 years. Government has planned to open a school for children. Before that entire building will be renovated. Lalu Yadav and people of Bihar will also like it if a school is opened in the building, he asserted. Chaudhary also called Lalu Yadav a registered offender. He has been held guilty by the court of law, and he is serving sentence in the AHD scam. This is a proven fact and nobody can deny it, he added. In response to a media query, Chaudhary said the government will confiscate properties of criminals and open schools for children. Strict action will be initiated against the criminals, whosever they may be. They will have to spend time in jail, he said. Chaudhary received support from Janata Dal (United) on the issue of opening schools in confiscated properties. Not only schools, even shelter homes will be opened there, JD(U) MLA Neeraj Kumar said, reacting to the deputy CMs statement. The AHD scam shook Bihar in 1996 when Lalu Prasad was the Chief Minister. The scam implicated politicians, including Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, along with bureaucrats, for creating fraudulent withdrawals from government treasuries through fake bills for livestock feed and medicines. Recently, the state building construction department issued a notice to former Bihar Chief Minister and Lalu Yadavs wife Rabri Devi to vacate her official residence at 10 Circular Road and move to another location allotted by the department. However, Lalu and Rabri have refused to vacate the government bungalow where they have been living for the past 20 years. RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui earlier said that the RJDs first family would shift to a private house being built at Mahuabagh near Danapur in Patna if they are required to vacate the 10 Circular Road residence.

Bihar man lynched over religious identity in Nawada; four arrested, police probe underway
PATNA: A 40-year-old man was lynched to death by a mob after ascertaining his religious identity in Bihars Nawada district, raising questions over the law-and-order situation prevailing in the state under the leadership of new Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary. The victim, Mohammad Athar Hussain, died on Friday night while undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the mob attack on December 5 under Roh police station limits in Nawada district. He was a native of Gagan Dih village under Laheri police station limits in Nalanda district. Before his death, Hussain alleged that he was targeted because of his religious identity. He was admitted to Biharsharif Sadar Hospital after the incident and succumbed to his injuries late Friday night. His relatives said Hussain used to sell clothes in rural areas of neighbouring Nawada district. Recounting his trauma, Hussain said that a group of four to five men forcibly stopped him, checked his pockets, dragged him into a room and made him reveal his religious identity. They beat me with iron rods, broke my fingers and trampled on my chest, he said. Hussain said that more attackers later joined them. They poured petrol on my body and attempted to set me afire. Before that, the attackers used pliers to crush my feet, fingers and ears, and struck me with bricks. My repeated pleas to spare me fell on deaf ears, he said in a video. Hussain used to sell clothes in Roh and surrounding areas of Nawada to support his family. He was the sole breadwinner of the family. He had been in the business for the last 20 years, but he never faced any trouble. What went wrong and why he was targeted is to be probed by police, his wife Shabnam Parveen told the media. Shabnam Parveen lodged a case against 10 named accused and 15 unidentified individuals. Police have so far arrested four suspects Sonu Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar and Shri Kumar. Raids are underway to arrest the remaining accused, said Ranjan Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Roh police station. The SHO confirmed that the FIR was filed immediately after the attack and that an investigation is underway. We have taken serious note of the incident, and the accused will not be spared. They will be dealt with sternly, he assured the deceaseds family. The postmortem was conducted under the supervision of a magistrate. A forensic team also visited the spot and collected evidence. The incident is part of a disconcerting pattern in Nawada, which has witnessed multiple mob-lynching cases in 2025 alone, including the fatal beating of two youths in February and an attack on an elderly couple in August over witchcraft allegations.

In a 1st, Bihar to conduct panchayat polls through EVMs, not ballot papers
PATNA: For the first time, Bihar is set to conduct panchayat elections next year through electronic voting machines (EVMs), in a shift from traditional ballot papers. The elections will be held in April-May 2026 to fill around 2.46 lakh posts in the three-tier panchayati raj institutions, including mukhiya, sarpanch and district board chairpersons. An official of the state election commission said the state governments approval has been sought to procure more than 32,000 EVMs. In 2021, panchayat elections were held using ballot papers along with partial use of EVMs. The new system (use of EVMs) will make the voting process easier and more transparent. It will also make counting process faster, the officer said. Sources said the process of procurement of EVMs has started and only a written approval is required from the panchayati raj department. The state election commission officials did not rule out possibility of an increase in election cost after the purchase of EVMs. The commission has earmarked `200 crore to make elections faster and transparent. The commission is thinking over use of M3 (Mark 3) EVMs, the latest model capable of storing data for up to 24 ballot units and 384 candidates. For the six positions in panchayat elections, including mukhikya, sarpanch, panchayat samiti member and ward member, one control unit will be linked to six ballot units. The commission said the move to M3 machines will help manage complexity of multi-post rural elections while ensuring secure polling. The state election panel has begun revising delimitation of seats and overhauling reservation roaster. Seats are reserved for SC/STs as per their population while 20% seats are reserved for EBCs and 50% for women in all the six positions in the panchayat institutions. State Election Commissioner Deepak Prasad said, The preparations for the next years panchayat election have started. Electronic poll Election to be conducted in April-May next year to fill 2.46 lakh posts 1.09 lakh posts of ward members of gram panchayats More than 32,000 EVMs are required. PATNA: After disowning her family and quitting politics, RJD chief Lalu Prasads daughter Rohini Acharya on Thursday signalled further strain within the family, appealing to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to ensure that every daughter can return to her parental home without fear, guilt, shame or the need to justify herself. In an oblique reference to CM Nitish Kumar, she wrote on X that schemes like giving girls Rs 10,000 or distributing bicycles, though well-intentioned, fall short of addressing systemic barriers to womens empowerment. She said the government and society must take concrete steps to protect daughters equal rights amid social and familial apathy. Rohini said Bihars deeply rooted patriarchal mindset demands sweeping change in both social and political spheres, stressing that a daughters parental home must always remain a safe space. Ensuring this, she added, is not just an administrative responsibility but crucial to preventing future exploitation and harassment of women. On November 15, she had announced she was disowning the Lalu family and quitting politics, targeting her brother Tejashwi Prasad Yadavs aides Sanjay Yadav and Rameez. Im quitting politics and Im disowning my family. This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do, and Im taking all the blame, she had said. She later alleged humiliation and claimed a slipper was thrown at her. She added that the Lalu family is also facing pressure from Tej Pratap Yadav, the RJD chiefs eldest son, who was expelled from the party for six years after a controversial social media post featuring him with a woman. After losing his Mahua assembly seat, Tej Pratap floated his own political party, the Janshakti Janata Dal, and had publicly attacked Tejashwis aide and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav, calling him a Jaichand. Hinting at further turmoil in the RJDs first family, Union minister and senior BJP leader Giriraj Singh said, Dekhiye aage aage hota hai kya (See what happens next).
