'INDIA bloc considering option of boycotting Bihar assembly elections': Congress
PATNA: A day after RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav hinted at a possible boycott of the upcoming assembly election over the process being adopted for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, his ally, the Congress, said that the INDIA bloc was considering the unprecedented option of boycotting the polls. The Congress asserted that it would not accept the electoral rolls being prepared through the Election Commissions ongoing SIR in the state. AICC in-charge for Bihar, Krishna Allavaru, told the media that the INDIA blocs allies were holding discussions on the issue. We challenge Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to pick 1,000 random people in every constituency in Bihar and scrutinise whether the laid-down processes are being followed. If even 25 percent turn out to be genuine, then we will accept the procedure. The truth is, this voter list belongs to the BJP and Gyanesh Kumar. We dont accept it, Allavaru said. When asked whether his party aligned with Tejashwis suggestion of possibly boycotting the assembly polls, Allavaru said, The INDIA bloc has maintained from day one that the SIR is designed to steal the elections. So, talks are underway on all options. One thing is clear, the votes of the people of Bihar are being stolen. All routes are open. All options are being considered. Elections being 'stolen'; will show it in 'black and white' to EC with Karnataka example: Rahul Gandhi On Wednesday, Tejashwi had hinted at a possible boycott of the assembly election over the SIR in the state. In a conversation with a news agency, Tejashwi said, When you're not even conducting elections honestly, if you're going to conduct polls based on a voter list given by the BJP then what's the point of holding an election? If there's going to be dishonesty from the start, why even hold elections? The Election Commission might as well just give an extension to the present government instead of conducting polls. There is a fight between those who are trying to finish democracy and those who want to save it. On the other hand, Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar claimed, Tejashwi has become synonymous with forgery. He is making baseless allegations against the SIR when the caste-based survey challenges his claim. He is making poll-boycott statements out of disappointment and desperation. People already boycotted him by limiting his party to four seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. JD(U) sends show-cause notice to MP Girdhari Yadav for remarks on Bihar electoral roll revision
PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumars Janata Dal (United) on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to its MP Girdhari Yadav his controversial remarks on the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. The notice contended that the remarks inadvertently lent credibility to the baseless and politically motivated allegations made by the Opposition. The notice, signed by the partys national general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan, stated that the JD(U) viewed the MP's conduct as a lapse in discipline, and not in consonance with its stated position on the matter of electoral roll revision. Your public comments on such a sensitive matter, especially in an election year, not only cause embarrassment to the party but also inadvertently lend credibility to the baseless and politically motivated allegations made by the opposition, the notice stated. The MP has been requested to reply within 15 days of receiving the notice. In case the minister does not respond, disciplinary action might be initiated against him, the notice stated. On Wednesday, while talking to the media outside the Parliament, Girdhari alleged, Election Commission has 'no practical knowledge' and has 'forcefully imposed' the revision on nearly eight crore voters. It neither knows the history nor geography of Bihar. It took 10 days for me to collect all the documents. My son stays in America... how will he complete all formalities in just a month? On Thursday too, Girdhari made comments that were not in line with the JD (U)s stand on the issue, clarifying that such comments on SIR were made in personal capacity. This is my personal opinion on the SIR and not of the party which I belong to, the MP said. While talking to the media, Girdhari said that the Election Commission is a constitutional institution, and that it should listen to everybodys views. Whatever EC is doing for carrying out SIR in Bihar, it is wrong, he stated. He added that he would stop making statements on the SIR if Nitish asked him to do so.

Tejashwi hints at poll boycott over roll revision
PATNA: RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Wednesday created a flutter in political circles when he hinted at a possible boycott of the upcoming Assembly elections over the Election Commission (EC)s special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. Tejashwi said, When youre not even conducting elections honestly if youre going to conduct polls based on a voter list given by the BJP then whats the point of holding an election? If theres going to be dishonesty from the start, why even hold elections? The EC might as well just give an extension to the present government instead of conducting polls. There is a fight between those who are trying to finish democracy and those who want to save it. Asked whether the Opposition could mutually decide to boycott the elections, Tejashwi, who is also the chairman of Opposition INDIA blocs coordination committee, said, That too can be discussed. We will see what the people want and what everyones opinion is.

JSP workers injured in alleged lathi charge as police stop march to CM Nitishs residence
PATNA: Several workers of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) were allegedly injured during a protest in Patna on Wednesday, after police allegedly resorted to a baton charge to stop them from marching towards the chief ministers residence. The protest, led by JSP founder Prashant Kishor, was part of a CM residence gherao stir to press for a three-point charter of demands. JSP supporters who gathered there to take part in CM residence gherao were stopped by police near Chitkohra Overbridge while they were heading towards the Gardanibagh dharna site. Police had erected barricades the march, leading to a scuffle between personnel and JSP protestors. Videos of the clash quickly went viral on social media. JSP later claimed that several of its supporters sustained injuries in the police action, alleging they were lathi-charged during the protest. Prashant Kishor attacked the state government for using force against peaceful demonstration and attempt to suppress the voice of the people. We will not allow this to happen. We will fight against them, he said. The agitation was organised to protest, what Prashant Kishor called, three critical failure of the state government. Later addressing workers, Kishor raised three questions: Why have poor families not received the promised Rs.2 lakh employment aid? Why have Dalit families not been allotted three decimals of land? And why there is silence on alleged corruption in the ongoing land survey? Prashant Kishor, who met the injured supporters shortly after the incident, slammed the state government, accusing it of suppressing genuine public concerns through police force. They (government) think that it will impact our fight for justice. But they are under the shadow of illusion. Our fight will continue till demands are met, he asserted. Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patna, denied the lathicharge and said that the protestors were prevented from marching towards prohibited area. Holding agitation is completely banned in prohibited zone, he told the media while defending police action.

NEW DELHI: The Central Water Commission (CWC) on Wednesday warned flood situation was worsening across several states, with the Ganga flowing at a severe level at several monitoring sites amid persistent rainfall. The Kosi River is flowing above the danger level in Bihar, while the Burhi Gandak River in Bihar is flowing under severe conditions. The CWC has advised district administrations in affected states to activate flood response protocols.
CM Nitish Kumar calls Tejashwi Yadav 'child' in Bihar assembly over SIR clash
PATNA: Bihar assembly witnessed noisy scenes on the third consecutive day on Wednesday during the ongoing Monsoon session, as chief minister Nitish Kumar called RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav bachcha (child), when the latter was raising the issue of the process being applied for the Election Commission (EC)s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The opposition MLAs, dressed in black clothes, once again raised the issue of the ongoing SIR of the electoral rolls exercise in the state, barely a few months before the assembly elections. Leader of the opposition in the assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, contended that the ECs job was to conduct free and fair elections and not to verify the citizenship of the people. Election Commission files affidavit in SC, defends Bihar SIR exercise He said that discussion should be held on the issue of SIR in the House and added that the opposition was not objecting to the SIR but was against the process applied by the EC for conducting it. Tejashwi also accused deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha- of branding voters Bangladeshis by referring to their sources. On it, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stood up from his chair and stopped Tejashwi from speaking. The ruling MLAs started creating noisy scenes when Tejashwi stood up from his chair to speak, prompting RJD MLA Bhai Birendra to comment that the House did not belong to anybodys father. Yah House kisi ke baap ka nahi hai (This House does not belong to anybodys father), he said. RJD MLAs remark created pandemonium in the assembly, forcing Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav to adjourn the House till the lunch recess. Earlier, the opposition members protested outside the assembly over alleged misbehaviour by security personnel with one of their colleagues . IRCTC case: Delhi court adjourns order on framing of charges against Lalu Prasad, kin till August 5
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Wednesday deferred till August 5 its order on framing of charges against RJD president Lalu Prasad, his wife Rabri Devi, their son Tejashwi Yadav and others in a case linked to alleged irregularities in the IRCTC. On May 29, the court reserved its order after the arguments were concluded on the aspect of charge. Prasad, Devi and Yadav have refuted corruption and other charges levelled against them by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case. The charges also include criminal conspiracy and cheating, and carry a maximum jail term of seven years. The three claimed before the court through their lawyer that the CBI lacked evidence to prosecute them. Prasad, who was the railway minister during the UPA-I government, earlier questioned the validity of sanctions obtained by the CBI to prosecute him. The agency told the court on February 28 that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the accused persons. IRCTC case: Court reserves order on framing of charges against Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi, Tejashwi The case is linked to alleged irregularities in the grant of operational contracts of two Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) hotels to a private firm. According to the CBI charge sheet, a conspiracy was hatched between 2004 and 2014 in pursuance of which BNR hotels of the Indian Railways located in Puri and Ranchi were first transferred to the IRCTC. They were later leased to the Patna-based Sujata Hotels Private Limited for operations and maintenance. The tender process, the CBI alleged, was rigged and manipulated and the conditions were tweaked to help the private party -- Sujata Hotels. The charge sheet also names former group general managers of IRCTC V K Asthana and R K Goyal, and Vijay Kochhar and Vinay Kochhar, both directors of Sujata Hotels and owners of Chanakya Hotel. Delight Marketing Company, now known as Lara Projects, and Sujata Hotels have also been named as accused in the charge sheet.

Bihars BJP leaders pitch Nitish as V-P; JDU retorts
PATNA: Amid speculation over the next Vice-President, many BJP leaders from Bihar on Tuesday pitched for Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar for the post , which fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned. BJP leader and Bihar cooperative minister Prem Kumar said the party would decide on Dhankhars successor but he would be happy if someone from Bihar was chosen for the post. PHED minister and BJP leader Neeraj Kumar Bablu said, It would be nice if Nitish became next Vice President. Whats the problem in this? BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul said, It is not in our hands to make Nitish Kumar Vice President. If this happens, it will be very good. It will be auspicious for Bihar. JD (U) leader and minister Shravan Kumar, however, said, There is no question of Nitish Kumar leaving Bihar. He will be here, lead the NDA to victory in assembly polls and serve the people of the state, enjoying another term in office. RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav claimed, He (Dhankhar) conducted proceedings on the first day of the session, then resigned at night. If it was health-related, he couldve done it earlier. Was the resignation given or taken? What happened with Dhankhar, it could happen with Nitish Kumar later as Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already said the CM will be decided after Bihar polls. RJD chief whip Akhtarul Islam Shahin claimed that Dhankhars exit was aimed at creating a vacancy that could be offered to Nitish in a bid to remove him from Bihar politics. For long, BJP has been seeking to get rid of Nitish and install its own CM. They are growing desperate ahead of the elections as an NDA defeat is imminent, he claimed. Earlier, former union minister and BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Choubey had even suggested that Nitish be made Deputy PM. So, it is not far-fetched to see Dhankhars resignation as part of a BJP strategy to push Nitish into a politically irrelevant position, he added. Meanwhile, sources claimed that BJP top leadership could pick Bihar governor Arif Mohammad Khan for the post of Vice President as he enjoyed support of senior leaders across party lines. Dhankhar is okay: Didi trashes health concerns As rumours swirl about what led Jagdeep Dhankhar to suddenly step down as the Vice-President on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, Trinamool firebrand and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday dismissed health concerns as his reason to demit office mid-term. I think his health is absolutely okay. He is a healthy man, an incredulous Didi remarked, adding to the buzz around his departure.
Oppn sports black, stalls Assembly to protest electoral rolls revision
PATNA: CHAOS reigned Bihar Assembly on the second day of the five-day Monsoon session on Tuesday as Opposition members wore black and protested the Election Commissions Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, demanding immediate discussion on the matter. Marked by shouting of slogans and scenes of unrest, the session was adjourned twice amid escalating tensions once just 21 minutes after the proceedings started for the day. The agitated members stormed the well, lifted chairs in protest and, in a moment, captured the video and hurled papers towards CM Nitish Kumar. Marshals immediately intervened to restore order, struggling to contain the uproar. The Opposition members were not in a mood to relent despite repeated request from the Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav to the members to take their respective seats. The House was adjourned till 2 pm and chaos prevailed, and Speakers request fell on deaf ears. The commotion began shortly after the House convened at 2 pm, with Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav denouncing the SIR process, calling it anti-democratic and alleging it threatened the integrity of the electoral process. Deadline extended The last date of submission of Enumeration Forms for SIR exercise has been extended by one one. According to an EC directive issued Tuesday, electors can now submit their forms until July 26, instead of the previous July 25 deadline.

Radhika Yadav's murder and what it says about the fragile masculinity prevalent in India
Women have always borne the brunt when it comes to clashes between fragile masculinity and their independence. Words from value education books and lines of radical feminists have failed to materialize in real life. Gender equality is still a utopian idea, veiled in the subtle nuances of everyday existence. The killing of state level tennis player Radhika Yadav, who decided to set up her own academy, is a symbol of how men can perceive their own daughters as a 'threat'. He had even asked her to stop working at the academy. Embarrassed by constant remarks from neighbours that he was living off his daughters income, he chose the path less (read: more) travelled by Indian men -- punishing women to exercise dominance over them. In her recent article 'Mapping masculine anxieties and female homo-sociality in P. Sivakamis novels', Dr. Keerthana, a PhD holder in gender theories from IIT Madras, describes such cases as 'ricochet behaviour' wherein threatened masculinity manifests itself in violent forms. It is notable that this led to his masculinity tainting -- even destroying -- the bond between father and daughter. He was reportedly unhappy that she made reels and featured in music videos. Moreover, according to investigators, the crime was premeditated as he asked his son to go out to buy milk -- a task he usually did himself -- before allegedly firing four rounds into his daughters back. According to Habiba Zafar, working as a project coordinator in an NGO for women's causes, This tragic case is a poignant reminder that real progress is not merely about women shattering glass ceilings but it is about transforming the mentality that perceives their independence as disobedience. Global prevalence of patriarchy and Indian context Globally, patriarchy remains entrenched. The Global Gender Gap Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum highlights that at the current pace, full gender parity will take 123 more years -- a grim reflection of the lack of progress. The report emphasized that globally, the second-largest gap to bridge is in economic participation and opportunity. In India, systemic patriarchy and slow reforms hold back women and in turn the economy. Speaking at the W20, former IMF chief Christine Lagarde said it is an absolute economic no-brainer that empowering women will boost economic growth. We have estimated that, if the number of female workers was to increase to the same level as the number of men, GDP would expand by 27 per cent in India, she said. The WEF report reveals that India ranked 131 out of 148 countries with a gender parity score of 64.4, indicating that the country still has miles to go. Here, internalized patriarchy remains entrenched and, while laws like PESA, Maternity Benefit Act, and Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, are beautifully conceptualised, enforcement remains a mirage. Ask women who suffer this every day. Questions outside the tennis court Radhika Yadavs murder is a chilling reminder of the horrendous state of society and brings to light how women realizing their worth can be unsettling. It raises critical questions: Why does a womans financial independence threaten male pride? Does success for women come at the cost of their safety? For long, women have been victims of limited autonomy, emotional abuse and rigid gender norms. According to the Centre for Honour Crime Research, based on National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 251 cases of honour killing were officially recorded in India in 2024 -- a sharp rise from 33 in 2021. Experts believe that the actual numbers are much higher as many cases go unreported. Institutional reforms, rigid laws, sex education, and changes in societal patterns can help in reducing gender-based violence to a great extent. But these require persistent efforts by committed individuals. Speaking to TNIE, Dr. Priyanka Tripathi, Associate Professor of Literature and Gender Studies at Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, says, Eradicating violence against women requires sensitisation and education of all individuals from an early childhood, creation of safe spaces that encourage communication and exchange of appropriate information, gender sensitive policy making, as well as sensationalization of domestic violence and its consequences. Challenging our existing epistemological structure is equally important and can be achieved by disrupting the structures that are embedded in our daily lives, such as fairy tales, oral narratives, religious practices, use of words, distribution of responsibility within the family structure, recognition of economic inflow and so on. The renowned poet Amrita Pritam rightly pitched for individualism in the face of gendered expectations, a mindset which is the need of the hour. I was not born to be a daughter, a wife, or a mother -- I was born to be myself, she said. Radhika lived by these thoughts bravely in her short life.

Dhankhar's resignation will force a rethink in BJP on Nitish Kumar: Tejashwi
PATNA: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday claimed that the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar would force a rethink in the BJP over the compulsion to continue with JD(U) president Nitish Kumar as the NDA's leader in Bihar. Referring to a recent statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Yadav also predicted that after the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar, Kumar will meet the same fate as Eknath Shinde, the former Maharashtra CM who had to make way for the BJP's Devendra Fadnavis. Dhankhar's resignation has given rise to the question, what is the compulsion for the BJP to keep backing Nitish Kumar, who seems to be not in his senses, said the leader of the opposition in the Bihar assembly, when he was asked about the sudden development and its possible impact on the state. Dhankhar, who turned 74 a couple of months ago, resigned from the top constitutional post on Monday, citing health reasons. Yadav's party colleague Akhtarul Islam Shahin had said earlier in the day that the resignation was a BJP conspiracy to shunt Nitish Kumar by getting the 75-year-old, but proactive, politician appointed to a post deemed to be politically inconsequential. A few years ago, late Sushil Kumar Modi, a BJP leader who served as Kumar's deputy for years, had also claimed that the JD(U) supremo was himself eyeing the top constitutional post and when the saffron party refused, the CM reacted by quitting the NDA, bringing down the government, only to return to power armed with the support of RJD, Congress and three Left parties. However, Yadav took a more nuanced view than Shahin and said, It is indeed on the BJP's mind that Kumar has to be dispensed with at some stage. That is the reason why Amit Shah recently said that though the polls will be fought under Nitish Kumar's leadership, who would be the chief minister, in the event of NDA retaining power, will be decided in course of time. We have always been saying that Nitish Kumar could be the next Eknath Shinde. The possibility has only grown stronger with the resignation of Dhankhar, asserted the former deputy CM of Bihar. RJD calls Dhankhar's resignation 'BJP conspiracy to shunt' CM Nitish Kumar ahead of Bihar polls
PATNA: The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Tuesday alleged that Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhars sudden resignation was part of a larger BJP conspiracy to sideline Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ahead of the assembly elections. The claim was promptly dismissed by JD(U) minister Shravan Kumar, a close aide of the chief minister, who reiterated that Nitish Kumar would lead the NDA in the upcoming polls and continue to serve as the face of the alliance in Bihar. RJD chief whip Akhtarul Islam Shahin claimed that Dhankhars exit was aimed at creating a vacancy that could be offered to Nitish Kumar in a bid to remove him from Bihars political landscape. For long, the BJP has wanted to get rid of Nitish Kumar and install its own chief minister. They are growing desperate ahead of the elections, where an NDA defeat is imminent, Shahin told PTI. He added, Former Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey had even suggested that Nitish be made deputy prime minister. So, it is not far-fetched to see Dhankhars resignation as part of a BJP strategy to push Nitish into a politically irrelevant position. He also cited the late BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modis claim that Kumar once lobbied for the vice presidents post and quit the NDA in 2022 after the BJP, then enjoying a Lok Sabha majority, refused to accommodate him. Nitish Kumar had broken ties with the BJP in 2022, accusing it of attempting to split the JD(U). However, he returned to the NDA ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and his party has since become a key ally for the BJP at the Centre. JD(U)s Shravan Kumar rubbished the RJDs claim. There is no question of Nitish Kumar leaving Bihar. He will lead the NDA in the assembly elections, secure victory, and continue to serve the people of the state, he said. Vice President Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening, citing medical reasons. His resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, took effect immediately.
