Greenfield International Stadium: India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana on Sunday became only the second Indian woman player after compatriot Mithali Raj to complete 10,000 runs in international cricket. Smriti, who debuted for India against Bangladesh in April 2013, needed 27 runs before the fourth T20I against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram to reach the huge landmark, and reached the milestone in just 20 deliveries at the Greenfield International Stadium. She eventually made 80 off 48 balls her 32nd fifty laced with 11 fours and three sixes at a strike-rate of 170.2. Apart from Mithali, Smriti joins New Zealands Suzie Bates and former England player turned coach Charlotte Edwards as the only other women to cross the big landmark. Smriti has also scored 629 runs in seven Tests and 5,322 runs in 117 ODIs. Raj, the highest run-scorer in womens international cricket, retired with 10,868 runs across formats, and Smriti has the opportunity to surpass her tally. Two Maoists carrying Rs 6 Lakh collective bounty surrender before Bihar DGP

PATNA: Three senior Maoist leaders, two of whom were carrying rewards of Rs 3 lakh each, surrendered before Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar in Munger district on Sunday, days after the state government claimed that Bihar had been freed from the Naxal menace. Two self-styled zonal commanders, Narayan Kora and Bahadur Kora, each carrying a bounty of Rs 3 lakh, surrendered before the DGP and other senior police officers at a simple function held in Munger. Their associate, Binod Kora, also surrendered on the occasion. According to police officials, Narayan Kora was evading arrest in 23 Maoist-related cases, while Bahadur Kora was wanted in 24 such cases. Binod Kora is facing three cases related to attacks on police personnel. The three surrendered Maoists handed over two INSAS rifles, self-loading rifles (SLRs), around 500 rounds of ammunition and 10 walkie-talkies to the police. DGP Vinay Kumar said the family members of the surrendered Maoists would be rehabilitated under the state governments surrender policy. Addressing reporters, the DGP said Bihar had largely been rid of the Naxal menace following sustained operations against the outlawed left-wing extremist group. He added that only four districts still had partial Maoist influence, which would be eliminated soon. He praised the state governments surrender policy, saying it would encourage the remaining members of the CPI (Maoist) to join the mainstream. The government, he said, had announced an attractive surrender package for Maoists operating in the state. Earlier, two other Maoist leaders, Ravan Kora and Bhola Kora, who were wanted in dozens of cases, had surrendered before the police. Munger, Jamui and Lakhisarai were among their areas of operation. The families of these two surrendered Maoists are currently availing themselves of benefits under government welfare schemes. Family members of Ravan Kora and Bhola Kora were also present when the three Maoists surrendered before senior police officials on Sunday. Munger was among the 22 worst Naxal-affected districts in Bihar, where government agencies had faced stiff resistance while implementing development works. Security forces had repeatedly conducted operations in Maoist-affected areas to curb extremist activities. Now we can say with full conviction that Bihar is almost Naxal-free, the DGP said in response to a media query in Munger. All three Maoists, Narayan Kora, Bahadur Kora and Binod Kora, were later sent to Munger district jail.

Indian Railways to double train capacity in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Vizag by 2030

BHUBANESWAR: Amid significant growth in passenger travel demand, Indian Railways has drawn up an ambitious infrastructure upgradation plan to double the originating train capacity at three major stations in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Visakhapatnam under East Coast Railway (ECoR) by 2030. As part of the comprehensive plan, railway infrastructure in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Visakhapatnam will be significantly augmented over the next five years to meet rising passenger needs, decongest existing terminals and improve operational efficiency. The capacity enhancement includes a mix of infrastructure development like terminal expansion, creation of new satellite stations, development of large-scale maintenance facilities and strengthening of sectional capacity through modern signalling and multitracking works. ECoR sources said, the strategy focuses on augmenting existing terminals with additional passenger platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and improved shunting facilities, while also developing new terminals in and around urban areas to balance traffic load. Major emphasis is being laid on setting up mega coaching complexes and modern maintenance depots to support the expanded train operations. Sectional capacity will also be enhanced through traffic facility works, signalling upgrades, flyovers, bypass lines and additional tracks to ensure smooth handling of increased train volumes. To support increased train volumes, multiple projects, including automatic block signalling and flyovers in Puri; pit line electrification, safety fencing, fourth lines and bypass surveys in Bhubaneswar; and several third, fourth, fifth and sixth lines, flyovers and bypass projects in Visakhapatnam are going on. Nearby stations will also be taken into account while planning capacity enhancement at the three cities so that the overall network capacity is evenly distributed and operational bottlenecks are avoided. The capacity-doubling initiative is a part of a nationwide plan covering 48 major cities identified by Indian Railways. At Puri, two additional full-length integrated pit lines are under construction and the upcoming lines will supplement the existing six pit lines. The entire coaching maintenance facility has been proposed to be shifted to a second coaching terminal depot on the sanctioned Puri-Konark new line, for which a final location survey (FLS) has been proposed. A large-scale coaching complex is also planned on this new line to cater to future traffic growth, particularly during peak pilgrimage and tourist seasons, railway sources said. The new Bhubaneswar railway station is being developed as a satellite coaching terminal. It will be supported by a maintenance facility comprising two pit lines at Mancheswar with dedicated rail connectivity. Given space constraints in the city, additional depots and supporting infrastructure are being planned in nearby areas to ease pressure on the existing station and yard. Similarly, a detailed project report (DPR) for extensive yard modification at Visakhapatnam is under consideration by the Railway Board. The proposal includes five additional lines, six new passenger platforms, ten stabling lines and the introduction of electronic interlocking to enhance safety and operational flexibility. Besides, Jagannadhapuram station on the proposed Kottavalasa-Anakapalle bypass line is being planned as a mega coaching maintenance depot and a large-scale complex. It will operate as a satellite station for Visakhapatnam. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative reflects Indian Railways focus on future-ready infrastructure. We are expanding coaching terminals and enhancing sectional and operational capacities in various cities to meet rising passenger demand and reduce congestion. This move will upgrade the countrys railway network and improve nationwide connectivity, he said.

Tej Pratap alleges death threats from expelled party leader, seeks enhanced security from Bihar govt

PATNA: Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD) chief Tej Pratap Yadav has filed a police complaint, alleging that his party's expelled national spokesperson Santosh Renu Yadav has threatened to kill him. The former Bihar minister, who lost the election from Mahua assembly seat in this year's assembly elections, has also written to Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary, seeking enhanced security. Speaking to PTI on Saturday, Choudhary said, Yes, I have received his letter... The matter is being examined. Sachivalay police station SHO Gautam Kumar said that an FIR has recently been filed on the basis of Yadav's complaint, and the matter is being investigated. Yadav, the elder son of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, alleged in his complaint that Renu was appointed the JJD national spokesperson, but later, he started working against the party's ideology. Yadav also alleged that Renu took money from party workers and others by promising jobs and other favours. Following this, the party expelled Renu on December 14. The former minister, in his police complaint, also alleged that after the expulsion, Renu started abusing and issuing death threats to him on social media platforms. Despite repeated attempts, Renu could not be contacted. Tej Pratap was expelled from the RJD on May 25 by Lalu Prasad for six years, a day after he reportedly confessed to being in a relationship with a woman named Anushka. He, however, later deleted the Facebook post with a claim that his page was hacked. Lalu Prasad also disowned Tej Pratap due to his irresponsible behaviour. A few days after his expulsion from RJD, Tej Pratap had alleged that there was a conspiracy to drive a wedge between him and his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav. He had voiced his sentiments in a couple of posts on his X handle, blaming the crisis on 'Jaichand', a metaphor for traitors.

Plan to double originating train capacity in 48 cities

NEW DELHI: In a first-of-its-kind initiative amid sustained growth in passenger travel demand, the Ministry of Railways has decided to expand coaching terminals and enhance sectional and operational capacities in a planned manner over the next five years. The objective is to meet emerging and projected travel demand by 2030 across 48 major cities in the country. After extensive deliberations covering all aspects, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has accorded priority to this long-pending requirement, setting a deadline for completion by 2030. The initiative aims to significantly ease congestion at busy stations that witness heavy footfalls of originating and terminating passengers. We are expanding coaching terminals, enhancing sectional and operational capacities in various cities to meet rising passenger demand and reducecongestions, Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday.Under this mega plan, the railways intend to double train-handling capacity in 48 major cities over the next five years. Short- and medium-term measures proposed by railway zones will contribute to the required capacity addition, particularly at high-density stations. The plan includes major infrastructure upgrades such as construction of additional platforms and terminals in and around urban areas, along with multi-functional facilities to handle new originating trains. Cities identified for these developments include Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi, Pune, Chennai, Gaya, Patna, Puri, Jammu and several others. Existing infrastructure will be augmented to meet future requirements through the creation of additional platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and adequate shunting facilities. As part of the effort to double the number of originating trains, the railways will identify and develop new terminals in and around urban centres, supported by maintenance facilities. A critical component of the plan involves increasing sectional capacity through traffic facility works, signalling upgrades and multi-tracking, which will be essential to manage higher train volumes at key locations. For instance, in Pune, Hadapsar, Khadki and Alandi have been identified for capacity enhancement, alongside additional platforms and stabling lines at Pune station. Following the Railway Ministers directive, a comprehensive, city-wise plan for all 48 major cities is under consideration, covering works that are planned, proposed or already sanctioned to achieve the target of doubling train-handling capacity within a defined timeframe. The cities included in the plan are Delhi, Mumbai (CR, WR), Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Patna, Lucknow, Pune, Nagpur, Varanasi among others. Notably, a majority of these stations experience consistently high footfalls due to pilgrimage traffic throughout the year.
