England Can Be 'Dangerous' In Champions Trophy Despite India Loss: Jos Buttler
Captain Jos Buttler on Wednesday said England can be a dangerous team in the upcoming Champions Trophy despite their 3-0 ODI whitewash in India. The tourists lost the third ODI by 142 runs in Ahmedabad to end their white-ball tour on another low after they lost the preceding T20 series 4-1. The 50-over Champions Trophy begins February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai with England to start their campaign against Ashes rivals Australia on February 22 in Lahore. Buttler said the recent string of defeats against a top-class India -- ranked number one in ODIs -- hasn't dented their confidence ahead of the eight-nation tournament. We're up against a good side in their own conditions, they're probably the benchmark in ODI cricket at the moment, Buttler told reporters. We've had some moments in games, never enough to force results or look like winning games of cricket in the last three matches. He said, But I think the fact we're not anywhere near our potential yet or playing individually or collectively where we know we can be gives us something to look forward to, believe we can get there and be a dangerous team in the Champions Trophy. Chasing 357 for victory, England started strongly with Phil Salt and Ben Duckett taking on the bowlers but soon lost steam to be bowled out for 214 in 34.2 overs. England lost the first two matches by four wickets, often putting themselves in good positions to put up tall scores but falling short as Indian spinners hurt them regularly. Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took six wickets in his two outings and was ably supported by Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. Buttler said England batsmen have no concerns tackling spin. As I said, simply we have to be better, said Buttler. We have to be very confident in all the guys' games against spin. Guys have all the shots. He said, Joe Root is probably one of the best players of spin in the world. Certainly a good guy to have in our team. Like I said, quite simply you can't put your finger on always why but we just have to be better and be more effective. Take the lessons from the opposition. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid ended as the leading bowler in the ODI series with seven wickets and Buttler praised his go-to bowlers. He's bowled fantastically well all tour, said Buttler. He seems to keep getting better and better, so really pleased with how he's performing. He's been great for us. Left-handed opener Duckett hit 38 but suffered from a groin niggle, which Buttler said will hopefully be fine ahead of the Champions Trophy. Bumrah Absence A Chance For 'World-Class' Mohammed Shami: India Coach
Jasprit Bumrah's absence from India's Champions Trophy team will be an opportunity for world-class Mohammed Shami and other fast bowlers, coach Gautam Gambhir said Wednesday. Bumrah was ruled out of the 50-over tournament starting February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai in a big blow to India's chances of landing the title. India -- ranked number one in ODI cricket -- hammered England by 142 runs in the final match to sweep the series 3-0 in a perfect tune-up for the Champions Trophy. But Bumrah's lower back injury remained the talking point after India's triumph in Ahmedabad. If he's injured, he's injured, whether it's me, whether it's the captain, we can't do much about it, Gambhir told reporters. Obviously, we know that he's an important factor. But as I mentioned, people like Harshit (Rana), Arshdeep (Singh), Mohammed Shami, all these guys will put their hand up. It's a great opportunity for them to try and deliver for the country. Fast bowler Harshit Rana was handed his ODI debut at the start of the series and he returned with six wickets in the three matches. Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh claimed two wickets in the only outing in the final match. But it is Shami's return at the start of the white-ball series that has boosted India's morale ahead of the eight-nation Champions Trophy. Shami, 34, recovered from a heel injury to make his international return in the T20 matches after he went on a break following India's 2023 World Cup final loss to Australia. Look, it's always good to have a world-class bowler back, said Gambhir. With his experience, with his quality, we all know what he can do with the ball in his hand. Shami returned with five wickets in T20s and ODIs after he was made to skip matches but bowled long spells with speed and precision. Obviously, we were trying to manage his workload, said the former India batsman. That's the reason why we played him two T20s and two one-dayers. Hopefully, he's going to be fresh and ready to go in the Champions Trophy. Tri-Nation Series: Rizwan, Agha Struck Tons As Pakistan Beat South Africa With Highest-ever Chase
Nation ODI Series: Skipper Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha struck centuries and shared a 260-run partnership to help mount the highest-ever run chase for Pakistan in ODIs as they beat South Africa by six wickets and seal a place in the final of the Tri-Nation ODI Series here on Wednesday. Rizwan struck an unbeaten 122 off 128 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes while Salman Agha hammered a 103-ball 134, blasting 16 boundaries and two sixes as they helped Pakistan reach 355/4 in 49 overs to successfully chase the 352/5 that South Africa posted after electing to bat first. The 707 runs the two sides raked up is the highest match aggregate involving South Africa & Pakistan in ODIs. The win ensured Pakistan, who had lost to New Zealand in their first match, set up a revenge final with the Black Caps in the series. After Fakhar Zaman (41) and Babar Azam (23) had raised 57 runs for the opening wicket stand in quick time, Pakistan had slumped to 91/3 with Saud Shakeel too getting out for 15. Rizwan and Agha then came together for a majestic partnership that took Pakistan to the verge of victory. Their 260-run partnership is Pakistan's highest for the fourth wicket in ODIs, breaking the record of 206 between Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik. Rizwan was the first to reach his hundred off 106 balls (7x4, 3x6) while Agha followed soon after, reaching the milestone off 87 balls, hitting 13 boundaries in the process. They batted brilliantly, with Rizwan a bit watchful while Agha was quite aggressive. Their partnership meant that South Africa conceded 300-plus runs for the second match in succession. Agha was out, caught by Kyle Verreynne, who kept wickets in place of Heinrich Klaasen from 31.2 overs of Pakistan innings, off Lungi Ngidi with the hosts at 351, needing only four runs to win the match. Earlier, South Africa posted a massive total thanks to some brilliant batting by skipper Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke, and Heinrich Klaasen. All three scored half-centuries while Kyle Verreynne scored an unbeaten 44 off 32 balls as South Africa reached a big total. Bavuma, who shared a 51-run opening partnership with Tony de Zorzi (22), scored 82 while Breetzke, who hammered 150 runs on debut in the previous match, contributed a run-a-ball 83 while Klaasen top-scored with 87 off 58 balls, studded with 11 fours and two sixes.
