Ashes: Vaughan Wants England To Play 'the Old School Way' At The Gabba
BBC Radio Live: Former captain Michael Vaughan believes that England need to have better game awareness at the Gabba and should take a more cautious old school approach during the day-night Ashes Test, starting from Thursday. Australia lead the series 1-0, and Ben Stokes side now face the hosts in a day-night Test in Brisbane, played with the pink ball. The hosts have an outstanding day-night Test record, winning 13 of 14 matches, including all three against England. England are coming off a stunning two-day defeat in the first Test in Perth, where the visitors shot selection drew heavy criticism. This England side dance down. They run towards the danger. I'm not too sure that's a sensible way to go with the ball zipping around. Play the old school way, Vaughan told BBC Radio Live. I'm not saying go into a shell and play like Geoff Boycott or Alastair Cook all the time. But please use your sense when the ball is zipping around slightly, They are the great entertainers but they haven't won a five-match series in the last three or four years. I will give England a tip. It's not working, he said. Vaughan suggested that England should aim to unsettle left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc in Brisbane with measured approach. Starc has claimed 81 wickets at an average of 17.09 in day-night Tests and is widely viewed as the premier pink-ball bowler in the world. When Mitchell Starc comes into the attack, he's the aggressor and has to take wickets. So if you leave a few outside off stump, there's no way Starc isn't going to bowl one straight because he is there to get wickets. It's having that sense and game awareness. Whatever England do, they have to play a lot better. They need a stronger game for longer periods, he added. With England needing to win to square the series, said he would stick with an all-out pace attack. Whatever England do, they have to play a lot better. They need a stronger game for longer periods, he added. Also Read: Live Cricket Score I can't imagine Will Jacks or Shoaib Bashir getting four or five wickets at the Gabba. I love Josh Tongue. You look at his record and he's a wicket taker. He would come in for me, said Vaughan. Article Source: IANS
When an Earthquake Stopped Play: Cricket's Rare Tremor Interruptions
Few days back, the play on the third day of Ireland's second Test in Dacca, Bangladesh, was suddenly stopped, during the second ball of the 56th over of Ireland's first innings. Reason: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake in Dhaka around 10.38am local time. The impact of the earthquake was felt in Kolkata, several parts of West Bengal, and Assams Guwahati also, where the second India- South Africa Test was scheduled to play after a few days. The moment the earthquake struck the visitors were at 165 for 5 when play was suddenly interrupted, leaving players and officials visibly startled. Play was stopped but players stayed on the field at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. All others related to the teams also came on the ground while spectators ran for the safety cover. Play resumed after approximately four minutes. For many it was a new experience but not for the Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan who said, I've been involved in a couple of earthquakes from my time living in New Zealand. The match was going on. I was in the press box. It was a terrifying situation. The press box collapsed - it was a terrible situation, Ariful Islam Roney, a Bangladesh sports journalist present in the press box, revealed. This is probably the first-time play stopped in a Test match due to an earthquake but not the first-time earthquake that has found mention in cricket. In 2016 the earthquake hit North India and Gujarat Lions IPL side was in a hotel at Mohali for their match against Kings XI Punjab. The players were evacuated from their hotel. The tremors were felt around 3:58 pm, measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale. The overseas players Dale Steyn, Aaron Finch and Andrew Tye shared their experience on social media. Tye spoke to Cricket Australia and revealed, I was sitting on the end of my bed fixing a cricket bat and it felt like the bed started to move. I was like what happened there and I looked around the room and certain things were shaking, so I thought it must be an earthquake. Christchurchs Hagley Oval is a permanent reminder of the earthquake that devastated Christchurch in 2011. The earthquake, which registered 6.3 on the Richter scale, resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people. Incidentally, the third day of the Test between New Zealand and Australia in 2016 (the second Test match played at this stadium), fell on the fifth anniversary of the earthquake and a minute's silence was observed during the lunch break at 12.51pm, the same time the earthquake struck. Another surprise is both the sides of the 2016 Test, also felt tremors on reaching Christchurch twice, before the start of the Test. The Hagley Oval became the city's major cricket venue only due to the damage to Lancaster Park, by earthquake. In 2022, an Under-19 World Cup clash between Zimbabwe and Ireland was briefly halted, due to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake at the Queens Park Oval, Port of Spain. The commentator Andrew Leonard shouted on the air, We are... I believe we are having an earthquake right now. In the box. We are indeed having an earthquake. It felt like not just a train going by behind us, but the whole Queen's Park Oval media centre rocked. Ireland spinner Matthew Humphreys was bowling the fifth bowl of the sixth over to Brian Bennett when the front-on camera showing the action began to shake furiously. Play was not interrupted, although the broadcaster's camera wobbled and the tremors were felt. On the second day of the four-day match, at the Bagh-e-Jinnah (Lawrence Gardens) ground, a tremor that lasted for approximately 90 seconds was felt. Its on record that a clock in the pavilion fell to the ground with a crash. Play was stopped for two minutes and after that match resumed. Lord Tennyson, standing in the slips, thought he had a sunstroke when the buildings around the ground started shaking.
Ashes: England Eye Historic Gabba Breakthrough as Australia Look to Extend Lead
England head into Thursday's day-night second Ashes Test against pink-ball masters Australia needing a rare victory at Brisbane's Gabba to get back into the five-match series. Travis Head's whirlwind century carried Australia to an eight-wicket victory inside two days in Perth as they went 1-0 up.ba The hosts are again without captain Pat Cummins and fellow quick Josh Hazlewood, leaving swing king Mitchell Starc, who is expected to be a force in humid Brisbane under lights, to carry the attack. England, who capitulated in four frantic hours in Perth from a winning position, cannot afford to slip 2-0 down with three matches to play if they are to have realistic hopes of regaining the urn. They could be without their own pace spearhead, Mark Wood, who is nursing a knee injury. Captain Ben Stokes says England have moved on from Perth and are not scarred by past results but they face a formidable weight of history in Brisbane, where they have been holding extra training sessions this week. England have not won a Test in Australia since their 2010-11 tour, losing 14 and drawing two. Moreover, they have not triumphed at the Gabba for 39 years and have lost all three previous day-nighters against the hosts. - Day-night specialists - Australia thrive under lights, winning 13 of the 14 pink-ball Tests they have played worldwide, but England will take encouragement from the sole defeat coming at the Gabba against the West Indies a year ago. On an evening it does seem to do a little bit more, especially if you have a slightly newer ball, said England fast bowler Brydon Carse after a night session in the nets on Tuesday. England could opt for a like-for-like replacement for Wood with seamer Josh Tongue, or bring in a spinner in the form of Shoaib Bashir or Will Jacks. The latter would add depth to the batting. Steve Smith captains an unchanged Australia squad with the only question mark appearing to be whether to retain the explosive Head as an opener at the expense of out-of-form veteran Usman Khawaja, 38, who suffered from back spasms in Perth. Should Head move up alongside Jake Weatherald, then seaming all-rounder Beau Webster could come into the side at number six with Cameron Green moving up to five. Marnus Labuschagne filled in as an opener for Khawaja in the first innings at Perth and said Monday he was unsure how the batting order would shape up. It's just game-by-game, and you work out what's your best team and how does it best work for the game. Labuschagne backed his Queensland teammate to come good on their home ground in Brisbane. I think Usman's a high-quality player. I mean, you look at his record. I don't think he needs advice. He's been around a long time, added Labuschagne. Head, who stunned England with a match-winning 123 from 83 balls, normally bats at five but said he would be ready to move up again, adding that fixed batting orders were slightly overrated. The traditionalists will say that's how it's got to be, Head said. It's ever evolving and we'll see where we get to. I feel I can play in any role.
