Meghalaya police file 790-page charge sheet in Raja Raghuvanshi murder case

GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Police have filed a 790-page charge sheet in the Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. The charge sheet was filed in a local court against Raghuvanshis wife Sonam, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha (both prime accused) and three hitmen Akash Singh Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi. Sonam and Kushwaha were booked under Sections 103(1), 238(a) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections deal with charges relating to murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence or giving false information. A supplementary charge sheet will be filed against three other accused Lokendra Tomar, Balla Ahirwar and Silome James for allegedly destroying evidence. They were arrested from different parts of Madhya Pradesh, weeks after the murder. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said Sonam had an affair with Kushwaha, and she conspired with him and the three hitmen to murder her husband during their honeymoon trip to the picturesque Sohra (Cherrapunjee). Earlier, the police had stated that Sonam, Kushwaha and the hitmen confessed to their involvement in the murder. 'Vile and deceitful, cruel and mean': How a honeymoon ended in cold-blooded murder of a young man Raghuvanshi and Sonam had arrived in Meghalaya on May 22. They were reported missing the next day after they had left for Sohra on a scooter they rented in Shillong. On June 2, the police had recovered the body of Raghuvanshi from a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Falls in Sohra. Subsequently, two machetes, allegedly used in the murder, were recovered. The post-mortem report revealed two cut marks on Raghuvanshis head. After the recovery of the body, the Meghalaya government had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Sonam remained underground until resurfacing in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh in the wee hours of June 9. Subsequently, she was arrested. The SIT arrested Kushwaha and the hitmen from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. After the breakthrough in the mysterious death case, residents and officials in Meghalaya demanded a public apology, not just from the couples families but also from a section of the media and social media users, for allegedly tarnishing the image of the hill state that relies heavily on tourism.

Meghalaya launches Autumn Calendar 2025 unveiling stellar line-up of festivals

GUWAHATI: The Meghalaya government has officially launched the Autumn Calendar 2025, unveiling a stellar line-up of festivals. With world-class performances, international sporting contests, literary dialogues, and sustainable showcases, the calendar captures the spirit of Meghalaya as a global hub for culture, music, and tourism. Launching the calendar, the states Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said these festivals must not be seen as expenses but as investments that attract visitors, empower local talents, boost local economy, and create resources to support other essential sectors. The scale and diversity of these festivals reflect Meghalayas confidence in positioning itself as a cultural powerhouse while ensuring that local youth and communities benefit directly from these initiatives, he said. A defining highlight of 2025 will be the Chief Ministers Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project, which will host daily music sessions across the state throughout the season. The programme has already created a remarkable impact. Over 7,750 artists have performed in more than 13,000 shows, generating 175 salaried jobs for crew and coordinators alone. This year, the project will provide the cultural rhythm to Meghalayas Autumn Calendar, ensuring that local talent remains at the forefront alongside global stars, a government statement said. Local artists will participate in the North-East India Festival Singapore later this month. Another group of artists will travel to Osaka, Japan, for the World Expo. The 2025 edition of Megha Kayak Festival, to be held in Ri-Bhoi district from October 14-18, is expected to be more exciting with preparation underway to host kayakers from around the globe. The festival last year featured three high-octane races with prize money of USD 20,000, cementing Meghalayas reputation as a global kayaking destination. The seventh edition of Ahor 44 Off-Road Challenge (October 23-25), one of the Northeasts toughest and most-followed motorsport events, promises tougher tracks and thrilling action for off-roaders and fans. Last year, the event drew participants and enthusiasts from across India, adding motorsport to Meghalayas cultural identity. The much-awaited Cherry Blossom Festival moves to Shillongs JN Stadium this year, placing the celebration at the very heart of the city. Last year, global sensations Akon, Boney M, and Clean Bandit performed to massive crowds. The other events lined up include Shillong Literary Festival (November 2022), Megong Festival (November 2829) and Winter Tales Festival (December 1113). The Meghalaya government views these festivals as strategic investments. In 2024, an overall expenditure of Rs 23.50 crore generated a return of Rs 133.42 crore, proving the transformative impact of culture and tourism on the states economy.

Prolonged torrential rains trigger waterlogging, landslide alerts in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Torrential rains in Guwahati on Thursday caused artificial floods in several localities, severely affecting the daily activities of people. The downpour, which followed Wednesdays heavy rainfall, also inundated major roads, disrupting vehicular traffic. People, including office-goers, were stranded for hours, much to their woes. Some were seen in viral videos wading through knee-deep water, while quite a few vehicles broke down on the roads. The rains left stretches of National Highway 27 submerged. The situation was no better on the stretch between Khanapara in Guwahati and Jorabat on the Meghalaya border. Vehicles are required to pass through Jorabat for travel between Guwahati and Shillong. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the next 24 hours. The weather pattern suggests that rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning (up to 6 cm/24 hours) is very likely to occur at most places of the city along with intense spell of rainfall (2-3 cm/hour) in the coming 24 hours which may aggravate waterlogging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets, the state government warned through a statement. The statement also mentioned that city authorities were closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems were being kept on alert. In view of the situation, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) requested people to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant. It urged daily commuters and long-distance travellers to plan their schedules accordingly and avoid unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas were advised to stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides. The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain. The status of the situation would be updated by ASDMA from time to time for general awareness, the statement further said.
