Namibian cheetah, her cubs were pelted with stones by villagers in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: A Namibian female cheetah, Jwala, and her four cubs were reportedly pelted with stones by villagers in Sheopur district, Madhya Pradesh, while attempting to hunt a cattle calf. Jwala and her cubs are among the three sets of African female cheetahs and their offspring born in India and released into the free-ranging forests of Kuno National Park (KNP) since 5 February. The mother and cubs had strayed out of KNP and were roaming near the Sheopur-Gwalior railway line when they caught hold of a cattle calf. A viral video of the incident shows villagers pelting stones and attempting to scare away the felines with lathis. The sudden attack forced the cheetahs to abandon their hunt and flee back into the forests of KNP, the first home to African cheetahs since September 2022. According to sources, members of the KNP tracking team rushed to the spot, intervened to stop the villagers, and ensured the safety of the mother and cubs. All five cheetahs are reportedly healthy and secure. A senior state forest department official associated with the cheetah project stated, Were making sustained efforts to ensure proper public awareness about the cheetahs. People will slowly adapt and co-exist with the cheetahs. While cheetahs released into the wild at KNP have previously strayed outside the parksometimes into neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthanthis is possibly the first time they have been attacked by villagers. Jwala and her four cubs, including two males and two females (each around 14 months old), were released into the free-ranging forests of KNPs Khajuri tourist zone on 21 February. Before that, on 5 February, the first set of a mother and cubsNamibian female Aasha with three cubswere released into the wild alongside South African female Dheera. The quintet, consisting of two adult females and three cubs, joined the South African male coalition, Agni and Vayu, in KNPs forests. On 17 March, a third set of a mother cheetah and cubsSouth African female Gamini and her four cubs (two males and two females)were released in KNPs Khajuri forest area. This increased the number of free-ranging cheetahs in the park to 17, including six African adults and 11 Indian-born cubs. Jwala and Gaminis release into the wild, along with their eight Indian-born cubs, was made possible due to the successful adaptation of Aasha and her three cubs in the park. Currently, KNP has a total of 26 cheetahs, with 17 in the wild and nine in protective enclosures.

MP HC sets aside Indore family courts order denying Jain couples divorce under Hindu Marriage Act

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has set aside an Indore family courts February 8, 2025 order which denied relief to Jain couples seeking divorce by mutual consent under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955. On February 8, the First Additional Principal Judge Family Court-Indore Dhirendra Singh had refused multiple Jain couples relief under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act (which deals with divorce by mutual consent). The family court while returning the divorce applications of the Jain couples had held that followers of Jainism dont have any right to get relief under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, as they have rejected the basic Vedic beliefs of Hinduism and have established themselves as minorities after separating from Hindu religion since 2014. Hearing one of the petitions filed against the family courts order, the MP High Courts double judge bench in Indore, comprising Justices Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Sanjeev S Kalgaonkar, set aside the family court judges order. The family court judge has committed grave illegality and manifested impropriety in concluding that the provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 are not applicable to the members of Jain community. The impugned order is set aside and the appeal of the parties allowed. The First Additional Principal Judge Family Court, Indore is directed to proceed with the petition in accordance with law, the HC stated in its order while hearing the petition filed by one of the aggrieved Jain couples. While accepting the appeal against the family courts order, the HC stated, The central government in exercise of powers conferred by Clause (c) of Section 2 of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992 notified the Jain community as a minority community in addition to five communities already notified as minority communities viz. Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Parsis) for the purpose of the said Act. Though this notification recognises Jain community as a minority community, it does not amend, invalidate or supersede express provision of any existing laws. No corresponding amendments have been made to exclude the members of the Jain community from application of an existing law. The founders of the Constitution of India and the Legislature in their collective wisdom have integrated the Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs for application of the Hindu Marriage Act. Both the parties had pleaded that they married according to Hindu rituals and customs. There was no occasion for the Additional Principal Judge to substitute his own views and perceptions against the express provisions of the law. If the concerned Court was satisfied that the case pending before it involves a question as to operability of provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act to the members of Jain community, it could have referred the case for opinion of High Court under the proviso to Section 113 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 read with Section 10 of the Family Courts Act, 1984, the HC observed in its order. In the 14-page order on Monday, the HCs Indore Bench further observed, Present day society is fragmented on religion, caste, sects, origin and language. The Additional Principal Judge attempted to find out the differences between the religious practices of followers of Hindu religion and that of the Jain community, to bolster his conclusion that religious practice and customs especially regarding marriage are distinguishable. However, the practices stated in the impugned order itself show that the marriage rituals performed by followers of both the communities are generally similar. The learned Additional Principal Judge ought to have applied the explicit legal provisions to the matter under consideration rather than engaging in scholarly interpretation of rituals and practices of the Jain community. The Hindu Marriage Validity Act, 1949 was passed to validate all the existing marriages between Hindus, Sikhs and Jaina and their different castes, sub castes and sects. Section 2 of the Act defines Hindu as including the persons professing Sikh or Jain religion. Section 3 of the said Act explicitly states that no marriage between Hindus, including Sikh and Jain, shall be deemed invalid by virtue of any other existing law, interpretation, text, rule, custom or usage. 11/ Thereafter, the Hindu Marriage Act was passed on May 18 1955. It is an Act to amend and codify the law relating to marriage among Hindus. Thus, the provisions of Hindu Marriage Act are applicable to all the persons, who are Buddhist, Jain or Sikh by religion. The Sub-section (3) of Section 2 fortifies the applicability of Hindu Marriage Act to the members of Jain community. These express provisions of the law were unfortunately not considered in the correct perspective by the learned Additional Principal Judge, the HC maintained. As many as 28 couples had reportedly approached the MP High Court in Indore after the family court had passed identical orders, denying them relief, in a single day on February 8. While looking into the controversy involved in the case, the HC had appointed Indore-based senior advocate AK Sethi as amicus curiae to assist it.

Teenaged love-birds missing from UP since January 25 found dead in MP

BHOPAL: A teenage couple who had been missing from Kanpur Dehat district in Uttar Pradesh since 25 January 2025 were found dead in a rented house in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh. The 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy, both students of the same school, died by suicide in the same room, police said. The two had been living in the Panagar area of Jabalpur with the help of the boys uncle for the past month and a half. While the girl was in Class XI, the boy was in Class XII in the same school in Kanpur Dehat. According to a senior police officer in Jabalpur, the girl had called her brother on his mobile phone on Saturday and informed him that she was living with the boy in Jabalpur. The girls brother told her that he would come there with the police and take her back. Its quite possible that the girl and boy became nervous and, apprehending some extreme action from the girls family, they hanged themselves to death in the same room of the rented house. The boy and the girl were found hanging separately in the same room on Sunday morning, after which we sent the bodies for autopsy. Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide by the two teenagers. Further investigation is underway, a Jabalpur district police officer told The New Indian Express on Monday. A Uttar Pradesh police sub-inspector who accompanied the girls relatives to Jabalpur said, The girl rang her brother on Saturday. Using surveillance mechanisms, we arrived at Panagar police station in Jabalpur on Sunday, where we were told by the police that the two teenagers who had eloped from Kanpur Dehat on 25 January had died by suicide. We subsequently went straight to the hospital mortuary. (If you are having suicidal thoughts, or are worried about a friend or need emotional support, someone is always there to listen. Exorcist rapes ailing 20-year-old woman in MPs Rewa district; held

BHOPAL: A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman on Saturday in Khama village under Sohagi police station area of Rewa district. The woman, ill for a month, was allegedly raped by an exorcist whom her family had enlisted to drive out an evil spirit they believed was causing her illness. The exorcist, identified as Samrendra Singh Bhurtiya, practices in Badi Umaria village, where the woman had been taken for faith healing over the past month. On Saturday, the exorcist visited the womans home in Kama village and began performing rituals. He drew a large circle and instructed the family to remain inside it while he took the ailing woman to another room for treatment. Subsequently, Bhurtiya took the young woman into the other room and allegedly raped her on the pretext of removing evil spirits from her body. Bhurtiya fled from her house as the woman fell unconscious. On gaining consciousness, she informed her family about having been sexually assaulted by the exorcist, after which the matter was reported to the local police. Acting on this matter, the accused occultist has been booked for rape and arrested immediately. He is in judicial custody of the local court, sub divisional officer police (SDOP-Teonthar) Udit Mishra said on Monday. Earlier, on March 13, a six-month-old baby boy, Mayank Dhakad, who had been unwell for a few days in the Kolaras area of MPs Shivpuri district, was taken by his mother to a tantric (occultist), Raghuveer Dhakad, for healing rituals. The tantric brutally hung the infant upside down over a fire and branded him with hot objects. The extreme heat damaged the babys corneas, after which he was admitted to a government hospital in Gwalior. Despite doctors' efforts, he succumbed to his injuries five days later on March 18. The Tantric, Raghuveer Dhakad, meanwhile, was arrested by local police in Shivpuri district on March 17.

Dalit teen dies by suicide in MP's Chhatarpur; family alleges assault, caste-based abuse

BHOPAL: A 13-year-old Dalit boy died by suicide in Madhya Pradeshs Chhatarpur district, with his family alleging that he was assaulted and subjected to caste abuse by a local trader. Anshu Ahirwar, a Class VIII student, was found dead at his home in Luvkush Nagar on Saturday. His family and Bhim Army activists claim he took his life after being abused and assaulted by Rama Shukla, a brahmin trader who allegedly reprimanded him for touching goods at his store. Not only did Rama Shukla scold my son, but he also thrashed him badly on the back. When I went to Shuklas shop, he admitted to beating my son for touching wares inappropriately. It was due to Shuklas beating and casteist abuses that my son hanged himself, Anshus father, Kishor Ahirwar, alleged. Santosh Raidas, Chhatarpur district president of the Bhim Army, who led protests over the incident on Sunday, alleged that Shukla not only assaulted the teenager but also used caste slurs against him. We demand the strictest action against Rama Shukla. He should be jailed for his cruelty towards the minor, which ultimately led to Anshus death, Raidas said. Meanwhile, the local police have registered an inquest report and launched an investigation into the incident. A case has been registered, and the matter is under investigation. Statements from the boys family are being recorded, and appropriate action will follow, said Chhatarpur Circle Superintendent of Police (CSP) Aman Mishra. 'Totally preposterous': Justice Verma responds to alleged cash discovery at his residence

NEW DELHI: Amid the political furore over the alleged discovery of cash from his residence, Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma, on Sunday dismissed the allegations and asserted that the claims were part of a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation. In a written response to Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya on March 22, Justice Varma stated that the fire, which allegedly led to the discovery of cash, broke out in an outhouse used for discarded household items rather than in his main residence. I state unequivocally that no cash was ever placed in that storeroom either by me or any of my family members and strongly denounce the suggestion that the alleged cash belonged to us. The very idea or suggestion that this cash was kept or stored by us is totally preposterous. The suggestion that one would store cash in an open, freely accessible and commonly used storeroom near the staff quarters or in an outhouse verges on the incredible and incredulous, Justice Varma stated. He criticised the media for not conducting proper verification before publishing defamatory claims. Justice Varma strongly refuted reports of cash being seized from the fire site, emphasising that no one present was shown any recovered money. That takes me to the video clip which has been shared with me. Assuming without admitting that the video was taken immediately at the time of the incident at the site, none of it appears to have been recovered or seized. The second aspect which I need to underscore is that none of the staff was shown any remnants of cash or currency that may have been present on site, he stated in his response. A security guard reportedly informed authorities that debris and partially burnt items were removed from the room on the morning of March 15. Justice Varma dismissed any insinuations that his family or staff were involved in removing cash. I also strongly deny and outrightly reject the insinuation, if made, that we removed currency from the storeroom. As stated above, we were neither shown nor handed over any sacks of burnt currency. In fact, and as stated above, the limited debris which was sought to be salvaged continues to exist in one part of the residence, he said. He further clarified that he and his wife were not even in Delhi at the time of the fire. I along with my wife returned from Bhopal on Indigo Flight No. 6E 2303 only on the evening of 15 March 2025 Therefore, the question of its alleged removal is not known to us. In any event none of my staff removed any article, currency or cash in any form, he stated. According to reports, a fire at the judge's residence on March 14 had inadvertently led to the alleged recovery of cash by fire tenders. The incident sent shockwaves through the legal and political circles prompting the Supreme Court Collegium to recommend Justice Varmas repatriation to the Allahabad High Court, his parent High Court. CJI forms panel to probe charges against Justice Varma; directs not to assign him any judicial work Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of India initiated an in-house probe, following which the Delhi HC Chief Justice had sought Justice Varmas response. Justice Varma expressed shock over a video shared by the Commissioner of Police, stating that what was depicted did not match what he observed at the site. He referred to a March 16 report submitted by the Registrar-cum-Secretary to the Delhi High Court Chief Justice, who was among the first officials to visit the site and made no mention of cash recovery. You had thereafter requested for the PPS to be permitted to visit the site and to which I had readily agreed. The PPS arrived later that night and when I, my PS along with the PPS inspected the gutted room, no currency was either found nor was any cash in any state seen present on site. This also stands corroborated by the report of (PPS) which has been provided to me. Post that inspection and on your instructions, the gutted room remains in that state even today, he stated. Justice Varma firmly denied that any burnt currency was recovered and raised doubts about the authenticity of the allegations. What baffles me is the complete absence of any sacks of allegedly burnt currency which were ever recovered or seized. We categorically assert that neither my daughter, PS nor household staff were shown these so-called sacks of burnt currency. I stand by my consistent position that when they accessed the storeroom, there was no currency, burnt or otherwise, which could be seen. I request you to bear in mind that the storeroom is removed from my residence and is used as a general dump room for disused articles and other sundry household articles. I wonder who would countenance an allegation that currency would be kept in a storeroom in a corner of the house, he stated. Justice Varma also pointed to a broader pattern of events targeting him, referencing past social media posts about an FIR registered against him and others by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2018. It was this which prompted me to observe that this clearly appeared to be a conspiracy to frame and malign me. It also lends credence to my firm belief that the entire incident is part of a sequence of events which occurred in the recent past including the unfounded allegations that circulated on social media in December 2024, which too I had apprised you about during the course of our meeting, and your first reaction of the incident being that of arson. It was the lack of knowledge of connection with the purported discovery of currency is what prompted my reaction in our first interaction in respect of this episode and when I had alluded to a conspiracy to frame me, Justice Varma stated. Justice Varma reaffirmed that neither he nor his family had stored any cash in the outhouse and urged an inquiry into his professional record. I unequivocally state that neither I nor any of my family members had stored or kept any cash or currency in that storeroom at any point of time. Our cash withdrawals, made from time to time, are all documented and always through regular banking channels, the use of UPI applications and cards. Insofar as the allegation of the recovery of cash, I once again make it clear that no one from my house ever reported seeing any currency in burnt form in the room. In fact, this gets further corroborated from there being no cash or currency which we saw when the site was restored to us after the fire personnel and the police had left the scene quite apart from we being not apprised of any recovery or seizure which was made on the spot. This may also be viewed in light of the statement of the Chief of the Fire Service which I have gathered from news reports. Reflecting on how the allegations have impacted him, he stated: In the life of a judge, nothing matters more than reputation and character. That has been severely tarnished and irreparably damaged. The baseless allegations that have been levelled against me have proceeded on mere innuendos and an unproven assumption that the cash allegedly seen and found belonged to me. Justice Varma lamented that the controversy has scarred his professional standing, cultivated over more than a decade of judicial service, leaving him with no means to defend himself. I would also beseech you to bear in consideration that in all my years as a Judge of a High Court, no such allegation had ever been made in the past nor any doubt cast on my integrity. In fact, I would be grateful if an enquiry is made with respect to my functioning as a judge and what is the perception of the legal fraternity with regard to my integrity and honesty in the discharge of my judicial functioning, he added in his response. Paddy scam worth Rs 30 crore unearthed in MP's Jabalpur

BHOPAL: A major paddy scam worth Rs 30 crore has been unearthed in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. A fact-finding committee has come out with this startling revelation. The fact-finding team, according to Jabalpur district collector Deepak Saxena, was constituted after the former minister and current BJP MLA Ajay Vishnoi, a few months ago, flagged irregularities in paddy procurement, its lifting and transportation for inter-district milling, to process the procured paddy into rice, before being made available for consumption through the public distribution system. The fact-finding committee looked into complaints in detail regarding transportation of paddy procured from farmers in 2024-25 in Jabalpur district. We actually zeroed in upon the vehicle registration numbers which were shown to be trucks and had done 614 trips to lift the paddy and transport it for inter-district milling at 18 rice mills across the state. We took the help of National Highway toll booths for online records of the paddy movement, besides checking online records of GST portals as well as the state transport department real time facts and figures, said SDM Shivangi Verma, one of the members of the probe panel, and added, The end results were actually shocking for all of us. The end results Out of the total 614 trips (shown in the documents by the millers) that were made to transport the paddy to the mills, there were no factual records of 571 trips with the various government agencies. This means over 92% of the trips were actually never made. Further enquiry into registration numbers of trucks shown by millers to have been used for transporting the paddy lots revealed that at least 55 of those vehicles were actually different forms of cars (including MUVs and SUVs) while 252 other vehicles were buses, tractors and pick-up vehicles. 44 vehicles were actually ghost vehicles as their registration numbers were found to be fake, while 121 vehicles actually had actually carried loads which were four times more than their bearing capacity. As many as 86 cases have been detected where vehicles have been shown to have made trips between Jabalpur and Ujjain (to and fro distance of over 1000 kms) three to four times a day which was impossible. Then cases have also been detected in which the same vehicles which were shown in the documents as actually moving with paddy between Jabalpur and Ujjain and Jabalpur and Mandla districts, were actually found to be operating in parts of southern India, particularly Tamil Nadu when checked through records of GST portal and National Highway toll booths, clearly establishing a massive fraud in the transportation of the procured paddy, Verma maintained. According to the Jabalpur district collector, out of the Rs 30 crore scam, there is a strong possibility of fake procurement of Rs 16 crore worth paddy having been adjusted through the transport which never happened. Also, a significant portion of the paddy shown to have been transported to 17 mills has actually been sold in the local market through middlemen. The police, after lodging 12 cases by Friday, will now find out to whom in the local market has the paddy actually been sold, Saxena said. As many as 12 criminal cases were lodged at 12 police stations against 74 persons, including 13 officers/employees of MP State Civil Supplies Corporation, 17 rice millers and 44 staff of cooperative societies which procured the paddy from farmers in 2024-25 on behalf of the government. The investigations have unearthed an unholy nexus of MP State Civil Supplies Corporation staff, procurement centers/cooperative societies staff and the 17 millers, who actually got the paddy transported only on paper, while the actual paddy was routed through middlemen to the local markets. The millers, some officers and employees of Madhya Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation and some officers/employees of society/procurement centers, hatched a well-thought criminal conspiracy, tampered with government documents and prepared forged documents and committed fraudulent acts, betrayed and caused damage to the paddy procured for the public distribution system and committed a criminal act of cheating and embezzlement with the government, an official statement by the Jabalpur district police said. How will the loss be recovered? According to the Jabalpur district collector Deepak Saxena, The process is very simple. Every miller submits earnest money of Rs 11 lakh for lifting each lot of paddy procured from farmers. Besides, fixed deposits and bank guarantees of the 17 millers (prima facie found to be involved in the Rs 30 crore scam) are also there. We will recover the losses out of it.

Bhopal Diary | MLA pleads for road in mamajis village

While Mamaji (the popular moniker for Shivraj Singh Chouhan) ruled the state for 16 long years, a two-time MLA of his party is yet to provide a decent road for his own mamajis (maternal uncle) village. Rajgarh legislator Amar Singh Yadav recently rued the absence of proper roads in his mamas village Dhanara during the Assembly session and appealed to PWD minister Rakesh Singh to sanction roads for the village. With the House sharing a lighter moment over mamajis grievances, Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar asked the minister to address the issue; Rakesh Singh too assured to look into the matter urgently. BJP MLA alleges farmers lands acquisition Five days after the state Budget 2025-26 allocated over Rs 2,000 crore for necessary infrastructure for the Simhastha-2028 in MP CMs home city Ujjain, a ruling BJP MLA Chintamani Malviya alleged that farmers lands were being permanently acquired to build the spiritual city before the massive religious gathering of 2028. Farmers are scared and they fear a conspiracy of land mafia and colonisers in it. Simhastha is organised in tents but attempts are being made to construct buildings for benefiting colonisers, said Alot (Ratlam) MLA and the former Ujjain Lok Sabha MP. Congress plays harp to wake Kumbhakarna The ongoing budget session of the Vidhan Sabha, although among the shortest budget sessions of MP Assembly, has been in news for unique protests by the Congress MLAs. Alleging rising corruption in the state (particularly over the case of crorepati ex-RTO constable Saurabh Sharma and the related 52 kg gold and Rs 11 crore cash seizure in December 2024), Opposition legislators protested in the Assembly premises, playing harps to awaken Kumbhakarna, a role which was enacted by one of the MLAs. The protest aimed to portray that the state government was in deep slumber like Ramayanas Kumbhakarna over rising corruption. BJP MLA offers land to speed up long-pending college project in MP's Bhind

BHOPAL: A ruling BJP MLA from Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh has offered to donate land for establishing a college whose establishment remains a distant dream despite being announced by the states chief minister Mohan Yadav over a year ago. On March 6, 2024, while addressing an agricultural and cooperatives meet in Bhind district, the CM had announced opening a new college in Nayagaon area of Bhind assembly constituency. With the announcement yet to be actualised on the ground over a year later, the third-time local BJP MLA Narendra Singh Kushwah raised the issue during the question hour in the Vidhan Sabha on Thursday. The announcement to open the new college was made on March 6, 2024, but nothing has happened on it more than a year later. My assembly constituency neighbours UP and is partially urban and partially rural. There are 70 villages whose youngsters dont have a college in the vicinity. Why isnt an announcement being made to start the college from next academic session, Kushwah questioned. Responding to his own party MLAs queries, the higher education minister Inder Singh Parmar said, In the past opening new colleges without proper preparations has led to problems related to resources and adequate space. The process is underway on the CMs announcement that we've written to the Bhind district collector for adequate land, once we get it, there will not be problems in starting the new college. The MLA responded back saying, You at least announcethat the new college will be ready in the new session, the land will be given by me. Ill give you government land and if that isnt there, I will donate private land for the college, but you at least announce the start of the new college from the next session. Congress demands CBI probe into alleged scam Meanwhile, on the seventh day of the nine-day budget session of the State Assembly, the opposition Congress MLAs led by the leader of the opposition Umang Singhar and his deputy Hemant Katare attacked the state government over the recovery 52 kg unaccounted gold and Rs 11 crore cash from a car on Bhopals outskirts in December 2024. While alleging a major scam in the state transport department in the wake of the enormous gold and cash recovery in December 2024, besides the subsequent arrest of the crorepati ex-transport department constable Saurabh Sharma, the Congress MLAs demanded a CBI probe into all the inter-related events, including who were behind the Sharmas appointment in the transport department on compassionate grounds in 2016. But with the government not buckling under their pressure during nearly an hour debate on the issue during the zero hour, the Congress first trouped into the well of the House and later walked out. Importantly, the entire matter is currently being probed by multiple agencies, including the states anti-corruption wing, the enforcement directorate, the income tax department and directorate of revenue intelligence. The seventh day of the ongoing budget session also saw the Congress MLAs staging a unique protest near the Gandhi statue in the Vidhan Sabha premises. Alleging that the state government was sleeping over the issue of rising corruption, the Congress legislators played harps to wake up Ramayanas famous character Kumbhakarna, which was enacted by one of the MLAs Dinesh Jain.

BHOPAL: In yet another attack on law enforcement in Madhya Pradesh, a history-sheeter attempting to escape from police custody opened fire on a police team in Damoh district on Thursday morning, injuring Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anand Ahirwal. The accused, identified as habitual offender Kasim Kasai, was later shot in the leg and overpowered by the police. This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks against police personnel across the state, raising concerns over the safety of law enforcement officers. According to Damoh Superintendent of Police Shrutkirti Somwanshi, the encounter occurred in the Damoh Dehat police station area while the accused was being taken to recover illegal weapons from his hideout in the Rajnagar Talab area. During the search, he managed to retrieve a hidden firearm and fired twice at the police team, injuring ASI Anand Ahirwal. As he attempted to escape, police fired in self-defence, hitting him in the leg. He was subdued and taken to a hospital, where he is currently under treatment in police custody, Somwanshi said. On Thursday morning, while being taken to a hideout for the recovery of illegal weapons, he attempted to escape and opened fire on the police. The attack on the Damoh police team comes just days after a violent mob in Mauganj districts Gadra village killed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) RC Gautam and injured several others, including a police station in-charge and a tehsildar. On the same day (March 15), two police constables, Sharad Singh and Atul Singh, were attacked while attempting to break up a brawl in the Kabadi Mohalla area of Rewa district. In another shocking incident earlier in February sub-inspector, T Ekka, was abducted while returning home from duty in Indore and subjected to brutal torture by four men, including a jail guard.

Teenager's social media post sparks communal tension in MP's Burhanpur; police take swift action

BHOPAL: A social media post by a 17-year-old teenager triggered tension in the communally sensitive Burhanpur city of southwestern Madhya Pradesh before the police intervened and brought the situation under control. The incident occurred late on Tuesday at around 10.30 pm when the teenager from the Lohar Mandi locality of the city posted comments about a particular religion on an Instagram group chat. The concerned post quickly became viral, prompting a mob of the other community to gather in the main market. Upon learning about the incident, the local police rushed to the spot around 11.30 pm and attempted to disperse the mob. However, the crowd, shouting slogans, moved to Burhanpur City Kotwali and protested against the offensive post until late at night. According to sources, after the late-night religious prayers ended, the mob gathered quickly and proceeded to the Kotwali. Burhanpur district police superintendent, Devendra Patidar, said an FIR was lodged against the accused under Section 299 BNS which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to hurt religious feelings. The teenager was subsequently detained. Before the FIR was lodged, the protesters were agitating outside the police station. We sat with them and informed them about the prompt action in the matter, after which the protest ended. Prohibitory orders are already in place to prevent offensive and misleading social media posts. We want to clarify that irrespective of age or gender, strict action will be taken against anyone who tries to vitiate the law and order through any such post, the SP added. #WATCH | Burhanpur, MP | SP Devendra Patidar said, An FIR has been lodged in the police station regarding a viral post which had content that hurt religious sentiments. Himachal Pradeshs Lahaul-Spiti most vulnerable to avalanches: Study

NEW DELHI: A new study of 11 Western Himalayan districts shows that most of Himachal Pradeshs districts are the most vulnerable to avalanches, followed by districts of Uttarakhand. The study indicates that man-made activities, including the rapid construction of roads, dams, and tunnels and the regular movement of heavy vehicles, are the reasons behind the increasing incidents of avalanches. Earlier this month, an avalanche hit a Border Roads Organisation camp in the village of Mana, located in Chamoli, killing eight workers. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), based in Bhopal, analysed the Indian Western Himalayas (IWH), which showed that Lahaul and Spiti are the most vulnerable to avalanches in Himachal Pradesh, while Chamoli is the most vulnerable in Uttarakhand. The study, A multiaggregation approach to estimate avalanche vulnerability and suggest phasewise adaptation, attributed increased avalanches in the IWH to multiple factors, such as climate change, complex terrain, and increasing human activities. To measure the increasing risks, researchers Akshay Singhal, M. Kavya, and Sanjeev K. Jha of IISER developed a district-level avalanche vulnerability frameworkthe Combined Avalanche Vulnerability Index (CAVI) in the IWHthat considers all major meteorological, topographical, and anthropogenic factors. Results from CAVI show that Lahaul and Spiti are the most exposed districts (0.85), Shimla is the most sensitive, and Rudraprayag (0.3) is the least adaptive district to avalanches. Moreover, three out of five districts of Himachal Pradesh are highly vulnerable to avalanches, while five out of six districts of Uttarakhand are moderately vulnerable. Overall, Lahaul and Spiti is the most vulnerable district, while Shimla the most sensitive, and Pauri Garhwal are the least vulnerable district. The study provides an inclusive characterisation of avalanche-prone regions, supported by a phase-wise adaptation plan to mitigate potential risks. The outcomes will be helpful to disaster mitigation agencies, emergency departments, avalanche forecasters and agencies related to recreational activities, said Jha. The team also assessed each of the 11 districts' avalanche risk based on exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The authors explained that meteorological factors, such as rainfall, snow depth, and temperature, contribute to a district's 'exposure' to avalanches, while slope and population affect 'sensitivity'. Socio-economic factors, such as literacy, hospitals, forests, and houses with concrete walls, help determine a district's population's capacity to adapt to an increased avalanche risk. Avalanches are estimated to cause about 30-40 deaths each year and often have disruptive impacts, from blocking critical transport routes to damaging infrastructure. While avalanche risk is largely attributed to weather, climate, and terrain, it has also increased due to human activities, including the rapid construction of roads, dams, and tunnels and the regular movement of heavy vehicles, the authors said.

Seven devotees, including four children, missing after boat capsizes in MP's Matatila Dam

BHOPAL: Multiple rescue teams are searching in moonlight (with the help of big torch-lights and tractors lights) for seven devotees, including four children, who have been missing in the deep waters of the Matatila Dam on Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh, after a boat capsized on Tuesday evening. The incident happened around 8 pm when 15 devotees from the Lodhi caste in Rajawan village, under the Khaniyadhana area of MPs Shivpuri district, embarked on a small boat. They were traveling to the Siddh Baba temple on an island in the deep waters of the Matatila Dam, built on the Betwa River. The boat had travelled just a short distance when it capsized in the deep waters. While eight of those onboard either swam to safety or were rescued by fishermen, seven others went missing. All seven of them continue to be untraceable, deputy inspector general (DIG-Gwalior Range) Amit Sanghi told TNIE. Sanghi and other senior MP police officials of the region are camping at the spot to supervise the search and rescue operations by multiple teams, including the state Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) team. The seven devotees who have been lost in the dams waters, included three women Sharda Lodhi (55), Lila Lodhi (40), Ram Devi Lodhi (35) - and four children - Kumkum Lodhi (15), Cheena Lodhi (14), Kanha Lodhi (7) and Shiva Lodhi (8). All the missing as well as the rescued devotees belonged to an extended Lodhi caste family of Rajawan village of MPs Shivpuri district. Right now, our priority is to search for the seven missing devotees and rescue them. After that, we will inquire into the reasons for the mishap. Preliminary findings suggest that the small boat was not just overcrowded, but also had some hole, which caused water to fill and the boat to overturn, a senior MP police official present at the spot added. Devotees in some parts of Shivpuri district in MPs Gwalior-Chambal region, have long been following the tradition of going to the Siddh Baba Temple on an island in the Dam, on the eve of the festival of Rang Panchami, which will be celebrated on Wednesday.

MP government faces opposition heat over alleged fake encounter of tribal man

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government faced tough questions from the opposition on Tuesday, as the Congress MLAs raised the issue of the March 9 killing of a tribal man in an alleged encounter between the state police and armed Maoist cadres on the sixth day of Vidhan Sabhas ongoing budget session. While accusing the state police of gunning down the 38-year-old Baiga tribal man Hiran Partha in a fake encounter in the core area of the Kanha National Park in Mandla district, the Congress legislators demanded Rs 1 crore and a government job for the dependents of the slain tribal. The tribal MLAs of the opposition party, including leader of opposition Umang Singhar, former home ministers Bala Bachchan and Omkar Markam, besides third-time MLA Narayan Singh Patta and first-time MLA Vikrant Bhuria, also demanded a transparent probe into the March 9 killing by a retired High Court judge. Bhuria added that MLAs too should be on that probe panel. This was the second day in succession that the Congress MLAs raised the issue in the House and outside. Bhuria, while alleging that the state police had killed the Baiga tribe man in the encounter to achieve its target in anti-Maoists operations, added that innocent tribals are being branded as Maoists and then eliminated. The police first claimed that the deceased tribal was a Maoist, but later changed the stand by branding him a Maoist sympathiser. This has put the operations of the police under cloud, Bhuria said while raising the issue through the calling attention motion. Responding to the attacking opposition MLAs, minister of state Narendra Shivaji Patel said The police never said that the slain man was a Maoist or their sympathizer. A standing order of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) makes the magisterial enquiry of every encounter mandatory. In accordance with it, a magisterial probe, which was instituted on March 12, will cover 11 points, including some of those aspects raised by the opposition legislators today. While the issue of whether he (Hiran Partha) was a Maoist cadre or not needs to be probed, the states CM, while showing sensitivity has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh to the deceased tribals family. Allow the investigation report to come, if the findings reveal that the deceased man wasnt even a Maoist sympathizer or supporter, then one adult member of the family will be given a government job and if required Rs One crore will also be given to the family, the minister added. Reacting to the ministers statements, the leader of opposition Umang Singhar (who is the fourth time tribal MLA and ex-minister) said, The CM released Rs 10 lakh for the family and now the minister is saying it still needs to be probed whether he (Hiran Partha) was a Maoist or their supporter. The minister needs to tell us whether the Rs 10 lakh has been given to the family of Maoist or an innocent tribal. Some members, including the lone Bhartiya Adivasi Party (BAP) MLA Kamleshwar Dodiyar questioned when an assistant sub inspector of police recently killed in an attack by mob in Mauganj district recently can be given Rs One crore as a martyr, then why cant similar sum be sanctioned to the family of a tribal. The cost of a cops life is Rs One Crore, while the cost of an innocent tribals life is just Rs 10 lakh, he questioned. Unsatisfied by the ministers reply, the Congress MLAs trouped into the well of the House and later walked out.

Congress demands probe into tribal man's killing in MP anti-Naxal operation

BHOPAL: The Congress on Monday targeted the Madhya Pradesh government over the killing of a tribal man in an anti-naxal operation on March 9 and demanded a high-level probe. The matter was raised by ex-minister and fourth-time Dindori MLA Omkar Singh Markam just after the question hour ended during the ongoing budget session. Tribals are not safe in the state, a Baiga tribe man has been killed, tribals are being defamed and branded as Maoists, Markam said while raising the issue for a detailed discussion on the issue. Responding to Markam and other Congress MLAs' demand for discussion on the issue, the Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar said, A calling attention motion has already been made on the issue, information has been sought on it from the government. You all will be given the opportunity to speak on it at the appropriate time, kindly be seated. The Speakers call, however, failed to dissuade the Congress members from trouping into the well of the House and indulging in slogan shouting there. The Congress MLAs, most of whom are tribals, including Omkar Singh Markam, Hiralal Alawa, Dr Vikrant Bhuria, Abhijeet Shah and Sena Patel, however, did not return to their seats, but instead walked out from the House, after the Speaker did not entertain their sustained demands. The MLAs later staged a protest outside the House within the Vidhan Sabha premises. Tribals, be it a common man or else a lawmaker or a minister, arent safe in this state. In Mandla, the Baiga tribal man was first killed and shown to be a Maoist, later it was said that he was accompanying the Maoists. Entire matter needs to be thoroughly investigated. Our voice wasnt heard in the Vidhan Sabha over the issue, so we protested outside also. Our lone demand is that FIR be registered for the tribal mans killing against the Mandla district collector and SP, as well as those police personnel who shot that tribal dead on March 9, first-time MLA from Timarni-ST seat Abhijeet Shah said. Importantly, a 38-year-old Baiga tribal (Baiga is among the three particularly vulnerable tribal vulnerable groups in MP), Hiran Singh Partha, was gunned down in an encounter between armed Maoist cadres and the MP polices anti-Maoist Hawk Force in the dense forests forming the core area of Kanha National Park (KNP) in Mandla district on March 9. While the IG of Balaghat Zone Sanjay Kumar says that Hiran was accompanying the 18-20 Maoists related to the outlaw groups Kawardha-Bhoramdeo division who had come there to collect ration from their sympathizers, the slain Baiga tribals wife Bisru Bai said, I don't know how my husband died. The local police have told me that he was caught in the middle of the gun firing between the Maoists and the police personnel. The SP Sahib has promised to get one of our children a job. I want a job for one of my children and Rs 50 lakh to spend the rest of our life respectfully. A senior state police officer in Bhopal, meanwhile said, His (Hirans) presence with the Maoists is a matter of investigation. Often the Maoists move with local tribals. Though the investigation is still underway about his association with the Maoists, its not new for the Maoists to actively use local tribals as human shields or ground workforce to collect their ration from sympathizers. Besides this issues, there is growing unease over the arrest of two men Ashok Kumar Valko and Santosh Kumar Dhurve (both casual labourers of the forest department at the KNP). The two residents, who worked as watchers in the jungles of KNP, have been booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. It was the duos arrest on March 8 that led the anti-Maoists establishment of MP police to the 18-20 KB division Maoists on March 9. While the chief of the local unit of MP Van Karamchari Sangh, Balsingh Thakur has claimed that the duo has been falsely implicated under the stringent law and added that the office bearers of the forest workers union will meet the SP Mandla in the matter soon, informed police sources engaged in anti-Maoists operation said theyve ample evidence about the duo being linked to the outlaws. One of the two arrested men was even warned in the past for his regular connection with the Maoists, but he continued to work with them, particularly for arranging ration to the outlaws, a senior police official told this newspaper.

One dial is all it takes: The sneaky trick behind WhatsApp hacks

A woman was going about her day when she noticed suddenly that her WhatsApp had stopped working. She tried restarting her phone, but to no avail. Soon after, her husband started receiving calls from her contacts, asking why she was requesting money. Confused, she checked her phone again. It wasnt just WhatsApp - she couldnt make or receive calls either. Worried, her husband contacted the cybercrime branch, where they discovered that her WhatsApp had been hacked through call forwarding. She then recalled a call she had received earlier from a person posing as a delivery agent. The caller claimed he got a parcel for her and asked for her address. Thinking her children might have ordered something, she shared the details without suspicion. The caller then asked her to dial a number, saying it was for delivery confirmation. Without much thought, she did. Unknowingly, she had entered a call-forwarding code. This redirected all her calls to another number, allowing fraudsters to hijack her WhatsApp and use it to scam her contacts. This was not an isolated case. In another incident, a man was tricked by fraudsters posing as a friend. They registered WhatsApp using his number and messaged him, claiming they had mistakenly sent an OTP and lost it. Busy with travel, he forwarded the OTP without caring to give a second thought. Soon after, his WhatsApp stopped working, and scammers used his account to request money from his contacts. Cybercrime officials explain that fraudsters often trick people into dialling a call-forwarding code starting with *#, which redirects their calls. This allows scammers to verify the number and register WhatsApp on their own devices. Another common method involves persuading victims to share their OTP , giving fraudsters direct access to their WhatsApp accounts. Scammers also use phishing links to install third-party apps, such as APK messenger forwarders, on victims phones. These apps forward messages to the scammers number, letting them intercept WhatsApp verification messages and take control of the account. WhatsApp hacking cases have been reported in Bhopal. While such incidents were more common in the past, they have decreased recently. However, fraudsters continue to exploit people who are unaware of these scams. What Authorities Say Authorities advise that anyone who suspects their WhatsApp has been hacked or is unable to access it should report the issue to the cybercrime branch or email support@support.whatsapp.com. The account is usually restored within 24 to 48 hours. To protect yourself from such attacks, here are three essential security measures you should enable immediately: Enable Two-Step Verification (Multi-Factor Authentication): WhatsApp's two-step verification adds an extra layer of security. You can activate it by going to Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification in the app. This requires you to set up a personal PIN, and a six-digit code. Both will then be needed to move your account to a new phone. Add an Email Address: Under Settings > Account, link an email address to your account. This helps verify your identity if you ever need to recover your account. While it won't stop a hijack, it can assist you in regaining access. Set up a Passkey (if available): If your device supports it, enable Passkey to link your WhatsApp login to your device's biometric authentication, like a fingerprint or facial recognition. While convenient, this feature complements rather than replaces Multi-Factor Authentication, which remains your strongest defence against account takeovers. Awareness and caution are key to avoiding WhatsApp scams. Enabling two-step verification, avoiding unknown requests, and checking for call forwarding can help protect accounts. If hacked, reporting it quickly can prevent further misuse.

They were protesting against the lodging of an FIR against senior High Court advocate Arvind Jain and his two lawyer sons following an altercation on Holi day. Advocates alleged that the police personnel had physically assaulted and took them under police custody at the Pardeshipura police station on March 14. An enquiry has been ordered into the allegations of the advocates and five police personnel will be under suspension until the probe is completed, additional DCP (ADCP) Amrendra Singh confirmed to TNIE. A 50-year-old Raju alias Kalu Gaur was on his scooter when a few children threw balloons filled with colours on him in the Pardeshipura area on Friday. While Raju (believed to be a police informer) was scolding the kids for throwing colours on him, advocate Arvind Jain and his lawyer sons Apurva and Arpit reached the spot and had a heated argument with Raju. It soon turned physical, and the father and sons were caught on camera assaulting Gaur. Coming to know about the incident, the police personnel patrolling in the area rushed to the spot and intervened. The advocates alleged that their colleague Arvind Jain and his two sons were cane-charged by the on-duty cops. Notably, during the protest, a video showcasing the lawyers chasing the local police station in charge and indulging in a scuffle with him accusing of being drunk on duty also surfaced.

Over 30.98 quintals of Ganja worth Rs 6.20 crore seized in Morena

BHOPAL: An interstate narcotics racket concealing a massive haul of Ganja under sacks of animal fodder has been busted in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh on March 14. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team of Morena police stopped a truck bearing a Chhattisgarh registration number near the Savitapura canal on the National Highway (NH-44). Ongoing investigations, particularly based on the information divulged by the arrested truck driver to the cops, revealed that the truck was on its way from Nashik (Maharashtra) towards Delhi. The truck driver who hails from the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, has been identified as Virendra Yadav. He is continuously changing his statements, due to which police are working at all possible angles in the case. The massive Ganja haul seized from the truck suggests that the inter-state narcotics racket might be larger than what was being thought initially. Keeping in mind the magnitude of the case, a special investigation team (SIT) of Morena police has been constituted in the matter to probe the backward as well as the forward linkages of the racket.

With Friday prayers and Holi coinciding, Muslim religious leaders in Ratlam ask youngsters to go home after 'Namaaz'

BHOPAL : With Holi falling on Friday, Muslim religious leaders have asked the community youngsters to go home directly after offering the Namaaz instead of roaming around. A peace committee meeting took place in the western MPs Ratlam city on March 13 in which the members present assured for peaceful Friday prayers and Holi. It has been unanimously decided by our (Muslim) religious leaders to tell the communitys youngsters, particularly those aged between 15 and 18 years not to roam, after offering the Taraweeh (special prayers performed exclusively during the Islamic month of Ramadan) and go home straight away, said Mohd Shabir Hasan. Hasan heads one of the prominent mosques of Ratlam district, which has a sizeable Muslim population. The Ratlam citys Shahar Qazi Maulvi Sayyed Quazi Ahmad Ali, issued a written appeal to the Muslims of the city appealing to smile and not act 'angrily', if a Hindu resident pours colour by mistake. Bihar government on high alert after bird flu spread, eggs temporarily removed from mid-day meal menu

PATNA: Alarmed over the spread of Avian Influenza, the Bihar government has directed the officials of the education department to stop the supply of eggs served to government schools under the Mid-Day Meal scheme. Sahila, Director of Primary Education and MDM, said, We have asked the officials concerned to stop the supply of eggs with immediate effect. An alert was issued by union fisheries, animal husbandry and dairy ministry to Bihar government over increasing bird flu incidents. Sahila added that district education officers and district programme officers have also been asked to comply strictly with the order. They have been directed to supply seasonal fruits like Apples and Bananas instead of eggs. The supply of eggs will be reinstated once the situation turns normal, the director told TNIE over the phone on March 13. In addition, the government has stressed the need of an awareness campaign to check the spread of bird flu. The consumption of eggs may prove fatal for people due to infection, a senior health department official said. As per the rules, eggs are provided to students from classes I to VIII. Vegetarian students are served Bananas and Apples in MDM. The bird flu was first noticed at a poultry farm at the Indian Institute of Agriculture Research (ICAR)-Research Complex for eastern region in Patna on February 27. The samples were sent to the Bhopal-based National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, which tested positive. Bird flu has been confirmed so far in Patna, Bhagalpur and Nawada districts. The lack of a testing lab in Bihar has left the officials of the concerned department worried. The proposal to set up a testing lab has been pending with the union government for more than four years. The lack of testing lab facility has forced us to send the sample either to Bhopal or Kolkata, rued an official from State Animal Husbandry and Fisheries department. The department had sanctioned Rs.14.92 crore in the financial year 2023-24 for setting up such a testing lab in the state. An official who preferred anonymity said that though a team from the National Dairy Development Board visited Patna a couple of months ago, no developments are in sight.

Madhya Pradesh MLAs seek action over rising threat to crops from nilgais

BHOPAL: On the fourth day of the ongoing budget session, members of the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha expressed concern over the rising threat of nilgais (blue bulls) to the safety of agriculture as well as human lives. Concurring with the concerns raised by the opposition Congress as well as ruling BJP members over the issue, the Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar asked the state government to make a systematic plan after consulting experts. If the nilgais continue to increase too much, then the state may have to face more problems, the Speaker said. Assuring the Speaker of appropriate action on the issue, the states parliamentary affairs minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said, Ill draw the attention of the MP CM to your suggestion and we will definitely take effective steps on the issue. The issue was raised by opposition Congress legislator Vipin Jain during the Question Hour. Jain represents the Mandsaur seat of western MP which is part of the region where the menace of nilgais is perhaps the highest. The biggest problem in my district pertains to nilgais, whose numbers are increasing rapidly. In groups of 30-40, 50-60, they enter the farmers' fields and destroy standing crops. Apart from it they are also causing road accidents, due to which human lives are getting lost. The states revenue minister says that compensation is being provided to farmers who are losing their crops due to the nilgais. As per the existing rule if there is 25% percent or more loss to crops, then only compensation will be given. But in my entire Mandsaur district, just one farmer has received compensation between 2014 and 2023 and the compensation sum was Rs 9000 only, said Jain. The nilgai numbers have now reached lakhs and farmers are in deep trouble due to these animals every day. Farmers should be given money to put up fences, so that they can do wire fencing around their fields, he added. Responding to the Congress MLA's concerns, the states revenue minister Karan Singh Verma said, Rs 67,716 has been paid as compensation in ten cases. The forest department has put up sign boards alerting the presence of wild animals on the roadside. For further prevention, where there is forest department land in MP, speed breakers too have been installed. We will raise the issue with the forest department about what other measures can be taken for prevention. Joining Jain on the issue was third-time BJP MLA from Jaora seat of Ratlam district (which neighbours Mandsaur) Rajendra Pandey and the Congress MLA from adjoining Dhar districts Badnawar seat Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat. This is a major issue, in the past too it has been discussed in the House. There was discussion in the past that an action plan similar to the establishment of Gau Abhyaran (cow sanctuary) could be made in respect of nilgais also at the divisional level, Pandey said. The problem is really very serious, I would request the states finance minister (also the deputy CM) that if given monetary help, the farmers can fence their fields, put up nets to save at least some part of their crops from such animals, the Congress MLA Bhanawar Singh Shekhawat added while joining the discussion on the issue. Answering the concerns of MLAs cutting across party lines on the issue, the revenue minister said, Were taking help from experts from South Africa. If there have been cases of animal loss or loss of human life, then the concerned MLAs can give it to me in writing. Agreeing with the concerns of the MLAs from both sides on the issue, the Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar said, In the past, our cattle used to roam freely and many times concern was expressed in the House about it. For this, the government made a plan for Gaushala on a large scale and it has been successful to address that issue to some extent. But there is a huge difference between cattle and nilgais. Stopping nilgais with wire fencing is a difficult task. I request the minister and the deputy CM to make a systematic plan in this matter after consulting the concerned department and experts. The problem of nilgais as well as wild boars causing enormous loss to crops is a major issue in the states western and southwestern parts particularly. According to informed sources, the state forest department is already working on a plan with South African experts to use helicopters to drive away nilgais and blackbucks in vehicles and then add them as prey base at tiger and cheetah reserves, like the present home of cheetahs -- the Kuno National Park -- or Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary which is likely to be the second home of cheetahs in MP.

This budget proposes to work for linking beneficiaries of Ladli Behna Scheme and other ambitious schemes of the state government with the central governments insurance and pension schemes, including the PM Jeevan Jyoti Insurance Scheme, PM Jeevan Suraksha Insurance Scheme and the Atal Pension Scheme, the finance minister said. While proposing Rs 18,669 crore for the Ladli Behna Scheme under which 1.27 crore financially weak women have been getting Rs 1250 monthly since September 2023 -- the minister stopped short of telling when the monthly installment will be raised under the scheme. In its 2023 poll manifesto, the BJP had promised to increase the monthly sum gradually to Rs 3000 by 2028, but the monthly sum remains static at Rs 1250 since September 2023. The budget also proposed CM Samridh Parivar Scheme for below poverty line (BPL) families, which will provide them a complete package of welfare schemes for which they are eligible. Aiming to increase the share of women in the states workforce, a scheme was proposed for building 5,772 beds working women hostels in four largest industrial areas. Eyeing the expansion and diversification of skill development, the Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Skill Development Program was envisaged, while at least one Madhya Pradesh Institute of Technology has been proposed on the lines of IITs in each division of the state over the next five years. Additionally, a Digital University and the National Defence University campus too have been proposed. With 17% of the budgets proposed outlay being earmarked for infrastructure development and expansion, the budget proposed introduction of social impact bonds a novel financial instrument which will enable the social services providers to generate funds from risk funders for providing services to beneficiaries. The National Stock Exchanges (NSE) social stock exchange will serve as the unified platform to facilitate the entire process. Focusing on ensuring better road connectivity with main roads to all settlements in villages, the CM Majra-Tola Roads Scheme has been proposed with the initial outlay Rs 100 crore, while a Rs 100 crore scheme has been proposed for rebuilding the damaged small bridges and culverts across the state. While proposing Rs 58,257 crore for agriculture and allied sectors (Rs 13,409 crore more than the 2024-25 budget), the budget envisaged providing incentive of Rs 5 per litre to milk producers under the CM Dairy Development Scheme as part of efforts to increase production and collection of milk in the state. Religion and culture With religion and culture being among the priorities of the present and previous BJP regimes in the state, a sum of Rs 2005 crore was proposed in this budget for infrastructural building for the Ujjain Simhastha-2028. Also, on the lines of Mahakal Lok Temple Corridor in Ujjain, a similar temple corridor Omkareshwar Mahalok, has been proposed in the Omkareshwar (Khandwa) which houses the second Jyotirlinga in the state. Sums of Rs 10 crore and Rs 30 crore respectively have been provided for the Krishna Patheya and Ram Path Gaman projects, which pertain to development of religious tourism circuits connecting places related to Lord Krishna and Rams life in the state. A total of Rs 1,610 crore has been provided for the sector, which is Rs 133 crore more than corresponding figures of 2024-25 budget. Targeting shaping up the promising sports talents, Khelo India Small Centers will be established under the Khelo India Scheme, while at least one fully equipped stadium will be developed in each assembly segment of the state. These stadiums will also serve as helipads for the existing PM Shree Air Ambulance Service. With the state being a treasure of forest and wildlife, the budget also proposed fencing in a 3000 km forest area to prevent human-animal conflicts in national parks and buffer areas. While earmarking Rs 5,668 crore for forest and environment sector (Rs 459 crore more than previous budget), the budget proposed Aviral Nirmal Narmada Scheme for tree plantation and climate management in forest areas in 10 km radius of River Narmada, which is the lifeline of the central Indian state. While lauding the budgetary provisions, CM Yadav said, MP is on top in the country among the growing states. This budget is in line with our resolve to double the budget size by 2028-29. The budget is all encompassing with provisions for each sector of the economy and every segment of the states population. Making light of the budget, the leader of opposition Umang Singhar said, This budget is full of magical figures and hollow pronouncements.

Ahead of MP budget, Congress MLAs chain themselves to protest against state's 'rising' debt

BHOPAL: Ahead of Wednesday's presentation of the Madhya Pradesh budget, Congress MLAs tied themselves with iron chains to protest against the state's increased loan and accused the BJP government of burdening the public financially. Led by the leader of opposition Umang Singhar and former minister Sachin Yadav, they reached the state assembly premises with black cloth-wrapped bundles, symbolising the budget, and holding placards. They tied themselves in chains to highlight the state's increased loans. Singhar told reporters that the BJP government has been taking huge loans due to which the state's people have been burdened with debt. Due to the increased loans, every person in the state carries a debt of more than Rs 50,000, the Congress leader claimed. But the government does not want to talk about employment, farmers, Dalits, OBCs, tribals and women, he said. The state government is enjoying the luxury of money by taking loans and the common man is trapped in the chains of debt, he said. Wednesday is the third day of the budget session of the MP assembly. Deputy CM and Finance Minister Jagdish Devda will present the budget in the House during the day. The size of the state's budget for 2025-26 would be around Rs 4.21 lakh crore, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said earlier in the day. On Tuesday, Congress MLAs had protested with plastic snakes in the assembly complex, alleging that the ruling BJP was sitting on government job vacancies like a serpent. On Monday, they sported black masks, demanding an extension in the duration of the session.

Over 6,500 kg of toxic waste from Bhopal's Union Carbide waste incinerated under Phase-3 of trial

INDORE: More than 6,500 kg of toxic waste from Bhopal's defunct Union Carbide factory has been incinerated under the third phase of trial incineration in Pithampur industrial area, Madhya Pradesh officials said on Tuesday. As part of the plan to dispose of a total of 337 tonnes of waste from Union Carbide factory, the site of the 1984 industrial disaster, the hazardous material was on January 2 transported to a waste disposal plant operated by a private company in Pithampur in Dhar district, about 250 km from the state capital. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had directed for the trial incineration of the waste to be conducted in three phases in strict adherence to safety norms. It had also asked the authorities to submit a report on March 27. Giving details of incineration in the third phase of the trial, an official said, The feeding of waste (into incinerator) began at 7.41 pm on March 10 at the feed rate of 270 kilograms per hour.By 8 pm on March 11, a total of 6,570 kilograms of waste was incinerated. Emissions during the process are being monitored through Online Continuous Emission Monitoring System (OCEMS), and so far they are within prescribed limits, he said. Air quality was found to be meeting prescribed standards in surrounding Tarpura, Chirakhan and Bajrangpura villages, the official said. The first round of incineration of 10 tonnes of Union Carbide waste began on February 28 and ended on March 3, lasting for about 75 hours, during which 135 kg of waste was fed to the plant's incinerator every hour, he said. In the second round of the trial, the waste was disposed of at a rate of 180 kg per hour. The second round ended on March 8. On the intervening night of December 2 and 3, 1984, highly toxic Methyl Isocyanate gas leaked from Union Carbide's pesticide factory in Bhopal. At least 5,479 people were killed and thousands of others suffered injuries and long-term health consequences due to the leaked gas. After the waste from the factory was brought to Pithampur in January, there were protests with some local organisations claiming that the disposal would harm the population in the surrounding area and the environment. However, the state government assured that the disposal would be carried out in a safe manner.

Kerala: NHAI directs consultant to rework alignment of elevated highway

KOCHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has asked the project consultant to rework the alignment of the proposed six-lane Aroor-Edapally elevated highway project as it failed to take into account the Kochi Metro viaduct that would be crossing at the Palarivattom bypass junction. Weve directed the DPR consultant to revise the alignment, incorporating the necessary changes, and submit the same within a month, said a senior NHAI official. The metro viaduct of the under-construction second phase, connecting JLN stadium with Infopark, passes above the Palarivattom flyover. It is the highest point in the 11.17-km long Pink Line, which has 11 stations Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium, Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Civil Station Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, Kinfra and Infopark. It will be one of the highest sections of Phase-2. A special steel span of 60m will be constructed to facilitate the metro viaduct above the flyover, said a KMRL official. The NHAI asked the consultant to give provision for the viaduct crossover. While the alignment proposes parallel construction at Kundannoor and Vyttila, the consultant needs to study on the best proposal at Palarivattom bypass junction. We aim to implement the project at the earliest as an extension of the Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway so as to ensure free flow of traffic, the official said. The NHAI has completed 50% work of the 12.75-km-long Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway project and is targeting to complete the constructions by February 2026. As per the report submitted by Bhopal-based Highway Engineering Consultants Ltd, the DPR consultant, the project is expected to cost Rs 3,600 crore and would come along the existing NH 66 bypass, which witnesses heavy traffic. The project is being planned in a way so as to fit within the existing ROW (Right Of Way). Hence, there is no need for additional land acquisition, except small areas at the start and end points. The 16.294-km long corridor will start before Oberon Mall near Edapally Junction (after the flyover towards the Alappuzha side) and end at Aroor Junction, just after the landing of the Thuravoor-Aroor elevated highway, which is currently under execution. There will be two ramps (up and down), providing connectivity to major junctions Vyttila and Madavana. The elevated corridor will run parallel to existing flyovers at Vyttila and Kundannoor. A two-lane service road with paved shoulders will be provided for local traffic. Also, portal piers will be constructed at seven locations, the feasibility study report said. The elevated flyover will facilitate speedy movement of long-distance vehicles and result in bifurcation of local and long-distance traffic. Meanwhile, another key project the four-lane corridor linking Willingdon Island with the Aroor-Edappally NH 66 bypass is facing delay due to the Cochin Port Trust objecting to its initial alignment. Even after reworking the original alignment, the trust is raising objections over acquisition regarding 2.2 km of land at CIFT Junction, the starting point. They want the section to be shifted to seaside, which would increase the project cost by Rs 100 crore, the NHAI official said. The National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) asked the trust to meet the additional expense of Rs 100 crore, but the latter refused. The proposed corridor will commence from Swift Junction, Willingdon Island, and end near Maradu Market at Nettoor Junction. The Swift Junction (starting point) and Nettoor (ending point) would be developed as grade-separated junctions, where conflicting traffic flows are kept apart usually by means of a bridge or tunnel to prevent traffic congestion. The project will come as a big relief to the region as huge traffic congestion is currently experienced on the narrow two-lane Kundannoor-Thevara bridge.

Congress MLAs protest in MP Assembly with plastic snakes, accuse govt of sitting on job vacancies 'like serpent'

BHOPAL: Congress MLAs on Tuesday staged a protest by carrying plastic snakes in the Madhya Pradesh assembly complex, alleging that the ruling BJP was sitting on government job vacancies like a serpent. A state minister later called the Congress' act shameful and said the opposition was misusing the Vidhan Sabha premises for a photo-op. Before the state budget session proceedings for the day commenced, Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, gathered in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the assembly building while carrying plastic snakes in baskets and placards. They raised slogans, accusing the government of failing to provide jobs to the youth of the state. Singhar claimed unemployment was rising in the state. The youth were running from pillar to post for jobs, while recruitments have been stopped in government departments like police, education, irrigation and health, he further claimed. The BJP government is biting the youth like a snake in the name of jobs. This government is sitting like a serpent on jobs, the LoP charged. Hence, we held this symbolic protest to awaken the government on the issue of unemployment, he said. The Congress leader claimed that more than 70,000 posts are lying vacant in the education department alone, but the government has not paid attention. Reacting to the protest by Congress MLAs, state cabinet minister Vishwas Sarang claimed the opposition leaders were misusing the assembly building premises for a photo opportunity and to draw media attention. It is extremely shameful. The Congress should discuss all issues in the House, he said. The public will not spare the Congress leaders if they engage in drama and gimmick only to grab headlines, Sarang said.

The mishap occurred on the first day of the MP Vidhan Sabha's budget session, which, with only nine sittings, is one of the shortest budget sessions in the state's history. The MP Kisan Congress had called for a gherao of the Vidhan Sabha building to protest farmers' issues, but the administration and police did not allow the march towards the assembly building. As a result, the Kisan Congress held a protest rally at Rangmahal Square, where the stage collapse took place. Meanwhile, Congress leaders, including state party chief Jitu Patwari and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, were among those stopped by the police from participating in the protest march, with water cannons being used to disperse them.

INTERVIEW| Multi-pronged approach needed to manage man-animal conflict, says Meenakshi Negi

The reasons for man-elephant conflict are many, including the presence of weeds and shrinking forest boundaries. The list could include highly palatable food crops grown on forest fringes, which are like rasagullas for elephants, while the fodder inside is like ragi mudde, said Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Head of Forest Force (HOFF), Meenakshi Negi. In an interaction with The New Indian Express , she spoke about her journey and challenges ahead as the head of the state forest force. Tell us about your journey. You are the second woman in India to be the HOFF, after Maharashtra, and the first ever in Karnataka. I am from Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. After getting selected to the Karnataka cadre, I joined the state in December 1992. I worked in Karnataka till August 2007. Till 2015, I was posted to the Ministry of Ayush with the Government of India. From 2015-23, I was posted in various departments in the Karnataka forest department, and from 2023 till recently I was posted in Delhi before I came back, when I was selected as HOFF in Karnataka. Was gender a concern when you joined the forest service? Entry of women into the Indian Forest Service started in 1980s. I am from the 1989 batch. Prior to me were two women officers. I was the third or fourth woman officer to join the state. Sometimes situations were comical back then. We joined as young girls and the established forest bureaucracy did not know how to treat us, or where to post us. Whether we will be able to go on night patrol, climb mountains, go into forests and face wildlife. There was a lot of hesitation and uncertainty among them. Slowly people accepted us and we made a place for ourselves. They understood that when women get into a job they bring their own, yet different, perspective. Today we are getting more women in the force. What attracted you to the Forest department? I had studied Zoology. My maternal grandfather was in the Forest department in the administration section. He pushed me into it. I was qualified for forest and other civil services, and I chose forest. How many hectares of forest land are vulnerable to fire? Determining the exact number of hectares of fire-prone land is difficult, but drier regions and transition belts are particularly vulnerable. While fire is a natural process that helps stronger vegetation thrive, increasing human pressure due to development, population growth and forest fragmentation has made fires more frequent and destructive. Most fires are human-induced, either accidentally or deliberately. How can exploitation of medicinal plants and minor forest produce be controlled? Medicinal plant conservation is a complex issue involving both scientific and social aspects. Ayurveda and traditional systems rely on classical formulations where only designated plant parts are used. Currently, over 80% of medicinal plants are sourced from forests. Despite the governments efforts to promote cultivation, large-scale extraction continues. Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) are responsible for oversight but lack capacity. With hundreds of species being exploited, strengthening BMCs and training local authorities is crucial for sustainable harvesting and conservation. What is the success rate of afforestation programme? Studies show it is around 72%. We are doing away with exotic species like eucalyptus and acacia and replacing them with indigenous species. This is also one of the ways to keep elephants within forests. The nature of forests cannot be changed by growing sugarcane or banana inside. We go for species that always existed in forests like bamboo, kada mavu (forest mango), jackfruit etc. Do weeds pose problems to forests? They do. They are widely seen in Bandipur and Nagarahole and other forest patches. Uprooting lantana is a big problem as once we uproot, it grows back. It has to be continuously uprooted for four or five years to get completely rid of it. We cannot leave forest land empty as the soil gets washed away. We have to plant some type of grasses. With the limited resources we have, we are doing our best to keep weeds away. What about involving the local communities? We are roping in local communities to make products out of weeds, and give them livelihood. This kind of model is sustainable and drives the economy. We need trained labour and a market but at the same time the products have to be of good quality. They have to get an assured market, like for instance, directing all government offices to get dustbins made out of the weeds. How is ISROs technology helping forest department? It helps us in a big way. With the help of satellite images, we can pinpoint trees and even know if a tree is missing. We have satellite images from 1990s. We can look at how forest land is changing, year on year, or even on monthly basis. This helps in guarding forest boundaries. Going forward as technology improves, we will have species-wise information. We need to improve in tracking medical herbs, as they are endangered. Should Karnatakas sandalwood tree be geo-tagged ? Karnataka is a blessed land where sandalwood trees grow like weeds. We need not geo-tag all sandalwood trees in Karnataka, as the state government deregulated sandalwood trees, relaxing felling permission. Cases of man-elephant conflict is rising. What are the reasons and what is being done to control it? Elephant population is increasing. With over 6,500 elephants, Karnataka is leading in elephant numbers. Some reports suggest that elephants are venturing out of forests due to a lack of food and water, but there are many other factors. For example, for elephants, fodder in forests is like ragi mudde (finger millet balls). Outside they find highly palatable crops like sugarcane, paddy and maize which are like rasagulla for them. Naturally, they prefer these. Thus, a multi-pronged strategy is necessary to manage things. Simply restricting their movement is not enough. Karnataka is pioneering in elephant conservation by installing rail barricades. What about farmers growing alternative crops? They need to be encouraged to grow alternative crops. In some areas on the boundaries of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, farmers have started cultivating chia seeds. Elephants do not like these crops and tend to avoid them. Chia seeds require less water and are economically beneficial for farmers. Recently, the forest minister and department officials visited Hassan to meet families affected by elephant attacks. Many solutions were discussed in areas like Belur and Sakleshpur, including selling land to the government to create wildlife corridors that connect fragmented forest areas. What is the status of poaching in Karnataka? Poaching incidents have significantly declined in Karnataka. While poaching of large animals has decreased, illegal hunting for bushmeat remains a concern. Continuous monitoring and ground-level enforcement are necessary to tackle this issue. The department is using drone surveillance and satellite imagery. What is the extent of encroachment of forest land in Karnataka? It is difficult to say how much land is encroached. Some of the land was granted to people. There is also out and out encroachment, like if a grant is two acres, people take five acres. As per the Supreme Court, encroachment prior to 1978 must be identified. Encroachment should be cleared and we are looking into all these issues. How is the forest department getting tech upgraded? The department has collaborated with the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Agency. The department has its own ICT lab at Aranya Bhavan to monitor satellite images, including GIS- based tracking of forest land and wildlife movement. There is also an alert system for farmers and those in coffee estates, where alerts on elephant movement are sent through text messages. What was your role as you were in the National Commission for Women? I was member secretary of the National Commission For Women for two years. We did several things, we basically looked at womens grievances. We did seminars and rehab work. Since I am a forester, when I was in Maharashtra during an interaction, a woman from an NGO in Maharashtra, who was working on water hyacinth, said she suffered labour shortage. We said we would help and involved women prisoners. We started similar programmes in Bhopal and Nagpur prisons. The prisoners were trained and business was successful. Here she got productive disciplined labour. Women prisoners were happy doing worthwhile work and getting money for it in their bank accounts. Will you involve prisoners in deweeding lantana? I have visited prisons in many states from NCW, including Bengaluru Central Prison. Now I will talk to the Prisons department and rope in Soliga communities working in BRT Tiger Reserve. Tribal relocation is a major concern. How is the department looking at it? There are two or three things. One is people voluntarily coming out like what is happening in Kali Tiger Reserve. There are areas where people are not willing to go out but programmes can be intensified with better package options. The third is the moment the government buys land, prices rise and people dont sell. People cant be forced to come out. Voluntary relocation in Karnataka has been a case study by itself and I am going to publish a paper on it. What about coffee plantations? In coffee plantations, they dont want to move out as it is a livelihood for them. But for an elephant, it is a forest. Historically, forests were given to people for growing coffee. Over a period of time, there is a bit of blurring of boundaries. What is the forest department doing to inspire young minds in forest conservation? There is a programme for children called Chinnara Vana Darshana. We take them on forest trips and tell them about forest activities. There is a YouTube programme called Hasiru Honnu. As children already have enough to study, rather than putting it into a curriculum, it has to be an activity. We should be doing things which children can see. Every family has a car and that is what children are looking at. They are exposed to consumerism and if we expect them to become environmentalists by reading books, it is not going to happen. You worked with Ayush in Karnataka during the pandemic and have expertise in medicinal plants. How did this knowledge contribute to Covid-19 management? During my deputation in the Ministry of Health, I handled Ayush education, drug regulation, and awareness. Upon returning to Karnataka, I was appointed Commissioner, Ayush, serving for nearly three years, including during the pandemic. With a shortage of medical resources, we converted Ayurvedic hospitals into Covid care centres for mild cases. To manage rising numbers, we launched the Aapta Mitra helpline, a PPP model where companies provided call centres and free food. Ayurveda and Homeopathy students manned the helpline, triaging cases and directing care. We also distributed immunity boosters through Ayush hospitals.

Bhopal Diary | Wont wear ironed clothes for a year: MP minister

Wont wear ironed clothes for a year: MP minister Known for headline-grabbing feats like cleaning drains and climbing electricity poles, Jyotiraditya Scindia-loyalist MP electricity minister Pradumn Singh Tomar has now vowed not to wear ironed clothes for a year to save electricity. Not ironing clothes saves half unit electricity and prevents carbon dioxide emission which can save four trees in a year, the minister said. The Congress, however, termed the ministers vow as another episode in his web series of gimmicks. If he is so serious about saving electricity and a clean environment, why doesnt he leave his fleet of vehicles and start cycling to work, Congress jibed. Minister urges Muslims to celebrate Holi With the Hindu festival Holi on March 14 coinciding with the auspicious Friday during the month of Ramzan, MPs senior-most cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has appealed to Muslims to celebrate the festival of colours and participate in the festivities. Who were your ancestors, find it out. They played Holi with Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. Holi is celebrated only once in a year, while Fridays come every week. Was told not to talk against RSS, says Digvijaya; hails Rahul's stand on Congress' BJP sympathisers

BHOPAL: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday said he was asked not to speak against the RSS while campaigning in Gujarat for fear of angering Hindus and hailed Rahul Gandhi's tough talk in that state a day earlier on those in the party helping the ruling BJP. Addressing Congress workers in Ahmedabad on Saturday, Gandhi had said the party's first job was to separate two groups of Congress workers and leaders, ones who carry the party ideology in their hearts and stand with the public and the others who were cut off from the public, half of whom are with the BJP. He had underlined the need to filter out such leaders and workers and had warned of strict action, even removals. In a post on social media platform X on Sunday, Singh congratulated Gandhi for his statement and said, I remember when I went to Gujarat to campaign as the Chief Minister of MP, I was instructed not to speak against the RSS. Hindus will get angry. @RahulGandhi @RSSorg Digvijaya Singh (@digvijaya_28) March 9, 2025 Asserting that the RSS-led Sangh Parivar does not represent Hindus, the Rajya Sabha MP, who was CM of Madhya Pradesh from 1993 to 2003, said it only misleads and exploits the community in the name of religion. The Hindu religious guru Shankaracharya ji has a tradition established over thousands of years and it is still in practice. Which Shankaracharya among them is a supporter of @BJP4India, @RSSorg today? BJP is a group of exploitative elements whose sole aim is to loot people in the name of religion and gain power, he said in a social media message.

Jharkhand: After Ranchi, bird flu outbreak reported in Bokaro

BOKARO: A bird flu outbreak has been reported in Jharkhand's Bokaro district, roughly a month after the disease led to the culling of 5,500 birds in Ranchi, an official said on Sunday. The outbreak, caused by the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, was officially confirmed on March 7, when the Centre issued a letter to the chief secretary of Jharkhand, he said. The outbreak was traced to a government poultry farm in Bokaro's Sector 12, where around 250 birds have already died. The Bokaro administration on Saturday culled 46 birds and destroyed 506 eggs after the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying asked the state to take all measures to contain the spread of bird flu, including declaration of infected and surveillance areas, restricting access to the affected premises and culling of birds. Forty-six birds remaining at the farm were culled, and 506 eggs and 1,717 kg of poultry feed were destroyed. The entire farm was sanitised, Bokaro Animal Husbandry Officer Dr Manoj Mani told PTI. The area within the 1-km radius of the epicentre has been declared as an affected zone and birds within the area will be culled, he said. Additionally, a 10-km radius has been designated as a surveillance zone, where the sale and purchase of poultry has been prohibited. An awareness campaign will begin today, Mani added. Dr Anil Kumar Sinha, in-charge of the government poultry farm, stated that the first deaths were reported on February 20. Twelve birds died on February 23, and we sent the initial samples to Ranchi on February 25 and to Kolkata on February 27. Following instructions from the Kolkata-based laboratory, we sent the sample to a Bhopal-based lab on March 5, he said. The ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal confirmed the presence of H5N1 on March 7. Sinha noted that of the 300 birds at the farm, around 250 died within 15 days. Earlier in February, a bird flu outbreak was reported at a poultry farm at Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) in Ranchi, where 5,488 birds were culled. NCW to open pre-marital counselling centres in nine states to guide couples for happy marriage

NEW DELHI: To guide the younger generation on leading a happy married life, the National Commission for Women (NCW) will set up as many as 21 pre-marital counselling (PMC) centres across nine states. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar said on Friday that these centres, which will be launched on International Womens Day on March 8, will provide expert guidance on the social, psychological, and behavioural aspects of marriage to the soon-to-be married couple. The aim is to guide the younger generation on how to have a happy marriage, she told the media. These centers, named Tere Mere Sapne will help individuals and families navigate matrimonial relationships with greater awareness and support from expert counselors and psychologists. Strong marriages are built on understanding and communication. These centers will help young couples and their families address concerns openly, ensuring healthier and more informed relationships, she further said. The NCW chief said that the Tere Mere Sapne centres will be set up near marriage registration offices. The initiative is being launched following extensive consultations with over 100 experts from across the country. We held consultations in Pune, where experts discussed what should be included in the PMC programme. We also conducted 'training of trainers' for counsellors to identify key topics that need to be covered, she said. These centres will be established in Rajasthan's Bikaner, Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, Maharashtra's Nashik, Latur, and Mumbai, and Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, and Faridabad in Uttar Pradesh. We plan to have such centres in every district of the country. Each centre will require a space of 150-200 square feet and will be staffed by trained counsellors, she said. Rahatkar said she has also urged district collectors to support the initiative by putting up hoardings and banners, and distributing brochures in universities, offices, and marriage registration venues. We have prepared well, but as we move forward, new issues will emerge. We plan to engage with colleges and create social media platforms to reach a wider audience, she said. The initiative will be launched in collaboration with the Akhil Bharatiya Abhivakta Parishad, a lawyers' body. The NCW will host an event on March 8-9 in Chhatarpur to honour over 1,200 women advocates. On the occasion of International Women's Day, on Saturday, the NCW will also organise a special exhibition in Parliament to honour 15 women who played a pivotal role in the drafting of the Constitution.

Jamia Millia Islamia sparks row after dropping South Indias only entrance test center in Trivandrum

NEW DELHI: For the first time, Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) has removed Thiruvananthapuram, the only entrance test center in South India, sparking criticism from students on social media. Meanwhile, the university has added two new test centers in North and Central India. Last year, entrance test centres included Delhi, Lucknow, Guwahati, Patna, Kolkata, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram. This year, test centres are in Delhi, Lucknow, Guwahati, Patna, Kolkata, Srinagar, Malegaon, and Bhopal, with the last two making their debuts as test centres. Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran on Friday wrote to the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia stating, I would like to bring to your attention a matter of urgent concern regarding the removal of the Thiruvananthapuram entrance examination centre from the list of multi-city centres for the Jamia Millia Islamia entrance examinations for the academic year 2025-26. Beeran further added, For several years, JMI has provided an entrance test centre in Kerala, either in Thiruvananthapuram or Calicut, facilitating students from the state to appear for examinations without excessive financial and logistical burdens. However, with the removal of this centre from the prospectus this year, over 2000 students from Kerala who intended to apply for various programs at JMI are now left in distress. The letter also highlighted how the removal will impose significant challenges, including the requirement for students to travel to distant centres, incurring substantial expenses on travel, accommodation, and food and secondly, the loss of valuable preparation time, as travel to and from alternative centres could take up to four days. Taking to social media, Shashi Tharoor also pointed out on X, Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) has removed Thiruvananthapuram from its list of entrance test centres. And it was the only such centre in south India! The city, moreover, witnessed at least 550 students taking the exams. An inexplicable decision: has @jmiu_official decided it doesnt want south Indian students? In 2023, JMI courted controversy when the university removed Srinagar as a centre. JMI then claimed that the Srinagar centre was not removed for all courses but had to be cancelled for some programmes as the number of applicants was fewer than 50. However, several students alleged that they were getting Delhi as the only option when filling out application forms online for admission to most undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes. The Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Professor Mazhar Asif did not respond to the queries.

Reel disaster: Social media stunt causes Gwalior cylinder blast, critically injures two

BHOPAL: A possible obsession with making social media reels may have triggered a powerful blast at a flat in a seven-story building in Gwalior district, Madhya Pradesh, during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The explosion, triggered by an LPG cylinder leak in a first-floor flat of The Legacy Plaza building, left Ranjana Jat and her septuagenarian relative, Anil Jat, with severe burn injuries around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The blast not only destroyed Ranjana Jats one-bedroom flat but also caused major structural cracks in at least eight other flats in the B Block of the multi-story complex on Bhind Road. Authorities investigating the explosion have uncovered evidence suggesting that the incident may have been linked to an attempt at creating social media content. Videos and images retrieved from Anil Jats phone reportedly show Ranjana Jat deliberately releasing gas from an LPG cylinder while Anil filmed the act. According to Gwalior Superintendent of Police Dharamvir Singh, Anil, in his statement before an executive magistrate, admitted that he had gone to Ranjanas flat specifically to record videos and photos.
