The matter pertains to a ownership dispute among the descendants of the last ruler of the princely state of Bhopal, Nawab Hamidullah Khan
BHOPAL: An unimaginable 168 labourers and 65 masons were engaged by a private contractor to apply just 4 litres of oil paint at a government school in Madhya Pradeshs Shahdol district which cost a whopping Rs 1,06,984 to the state exchequer. The bizarre bill, pertaining to the application of just 4 litres of oil paint at the Government High School in Sakandi village of Beohari, was not the only example of alleged financial wrongdoing. A similar bill was generated and paid for construction and painting-related work at another school in the same development block of Shahdol district. At the Government Higher Secondary School in Nipania village, the same private contractor, Sudhakar Constructions, raised another bill worth Rs 2,31,685. This time, the charges were for applying 20 litres of oil paint, installing ten windows, and fitting four doorsworks allegedly done with the help of 275 labourers and 150 masons. Not only were these bizarrely inflated bills raised by the private contractor, but the payments were reportedly cleared with the signatures of the principals of the two government schools and the in-charge district education officer, PS Marpachi. Surprisingly, while the bills claimed that 443 labourers and 215 masons were involved in the work at both schools, ground-level reports suggested that there arent even that many labourers or masons in and around the two villages concerned. Further, the payments for the two bills, worth over Rs 3.38 lakh, were made by the district treasury officer without properly verifying whether the actual work, as detailed in the paperwork, had been completed on the ground. After learning about the irregularities, Shahdol district collector Kedar Singh ordered a detailed inquiry by the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM). The SDMs probe revealed that only token work, and that too of poor quality, was done in both schools. The inquiry also found that relevant documents pertaining to the claimed works were missing in both institutions. Based on the SDMs findings, the Shahdol district collector ordered action against the principals of both schools and issued a notice to the officiating district education officer. According to official sources, the district collector has also ordered a thorough inquiry into all recent construction and maintenance works in government schools across the district, including the payments made for those projects.

NHRC flags police lapses in Bhopal love trap, forced conversion racket; seeks action, deeper probe
BHOPAL: Two months after a suspected love trap and forced conversion racket was busted in Bhopal, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has flagged serious lapses in the police investigation. The racket allegedly involved youths from one community befriending college girls from another, raping them, making obscene videos, and pressuring them for religious conversion and marriage. In its four-page communication to the states chief secretary and DGP earlier this week, the NHRC has mentioned, Perusal of the facts of the case revealed that the main accused Farhan Khan was in touch with several persons in MP and outside. His criminal network connection with the crime in different states cannot be ruled out. However, the findings of the investigation remain silent on this aspect. Such a network of crime within the state as well as pan-India, if any, needs to be ascertained. There is a need for more rigorous investigation to find out the possible network of crime inside the state as well as pan-India to protect the children and teenage girls from sexual exploitation and the pattern of dominant gender crime of trafficking, the NHRC wrote in the communication. The human rights body further highlighted there being no doubt regarding the relationship between the main accused, Farhan and one Shariq Machli, particularly as Machli appears to be involved with the prime accused in this entire case. Importantly, the man Sharif Machli, is a Bhopal-based businessman, who is believed to have powerful political links. The NHRC has also recommended that the states Director General of Police (DGP) initiate departmental action against the police officer who failed to take the matter seriously. The lapse occurred when the first of the alleged rape survivors, a college student whose complaint led to the first of multiple cases in Bhopal, initially called the state polices emergency response service. She had explicitly stated that she had been raped by Farhan Khan in Indore, but her complaint was not acted upon with due seriousness. The concerned official recorded the call in a manner suggesting that the victim had denied the occurrence of rape and advised her to visit the police station the following morning to file a complaint This response reflects gross negligence and a callous attitude on the part of the police personnel in handling a complaint regarding a heinous crime such as rape and liable to face departmental action. The NHRC also mentioned in the four-page communication about the Club-90 restaurant, which was located close to the college, where the female students studied, and also allegedly used in the crime. It was, however, demolished by authorities without prior information and collecting crucial evidence from there. Departmental action be taken against responsible police officers for this major lapse and forensic investigation of Club 90 is required for fair investigation of the case. Initial police investigation and an NHRC probe into the matter, the allegations of the complainant appear to be true. It is a real and serious issue, involving deceitful romantic relationships and, thereafter, sexual exploitation and forced conversions of Hindu girls. Forcible, deceitful or dishonest religious conversion is unacceptable, it equals the Pattern of Dominant Gender Crime of Trafficking, the NHRC maintained. The Commission also criticised the silence of the concerned colleges anti-ragging cell, which is mandated to act under UGC guidelines. Further, the Commission has asked the states chief secretary to ensure that the affected girls are admitted into new colleges without delay and that their education continues unhindered. It has also instructed the state to provide pending scholarships and to resume financial support for victims from SC, ST, and OBC backgrounds. Noting that no compensation had yet been paid under the Victim Compensation Scheme, the NHRC called on the government to immediately release Rs 5 lakh per victim and Rs 6 lakh to the minor survivor under the POCSO Act. The NHRC noted that considering the facts of the case and the serious nature of crime, there was a need for a more rigorous investigation to unearth the truth. The Commission sought a compliance report on it within two weeks.

Away from the edge: on waste disposal from the 1984 Bhopal plant accident
The incineration of toxic waste from the Bhopal tragedy took time and effort
BHOPAL: The deaths of three men, aged 32 to 65, after reportedly being stuck in an over 30-hour, 8-km traffic jam on Indore-Dewas Highway have prompted a PIL in the MP High Courts Indore Bench. The PIL was recently filed by Dewas-based advocate Anand Adhikari. While the High Court issued notices to the respondents, including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) asking to file their replies in the matter before July 7, during the course of the hearing on Monday, the counsel representing the NHAI (which is tasked with maintaining the nations network) left everyone shell-shocked by casually questioning, Why do people even leave home so early without any work? While confirming that the bizarre comment was made by the NHAI counsel during Mondays hearing, the petitioners counsel Girish Patwardhan said, Yes, the comment was made verbally by the advocate. The HC responded that the reasoning was not acceptable, as it would mean that citizens could no longer step out of their homes. Coming to know about the NHAI counsels casual comment in open court, Sumit Patel, the nephew of one of the deceased men, expressed shock and anger. How can such an insensitive statement be made by a responsible person before the court? he asked, speaking to journalists on Wednesday. Sumit said they had not left home a pleasure trip, but to save the life of his critically ill uncle, 55-year-old Balram Patel, who died after both oxygen cylinders in their vehicle were exhausted due to the long traffic jam. He questioned whether the NHAI counsel would have made the same remark had the tragedy involved the kin of someone from the NHAI. We condemn the casual comment made by the counsel for the NHAI in the court, he said. d service roads and absence of adequate traffic diversion plan. NHAI distances itself from comment In a latest development on Wednesday, the NHAI distanced itself from the comment made by the counsel in the HC on Monday. Its hereby clarified that the remark made by the advocate doesnt represent the NHAIs official version. The remark was made by the advocate without any authorization by the NHAI. Accordingly, a show cause notice has been served to the advocate. According to Girish Patwardhan, who is representing the petitioner, The petition has been filed by the Dewas-based advocate Anand Adhikari, who was himself stuck in the same traffic jam on June 27. The double judge bench of the HC in Indore on Monday, heard the PIL and has issued notice to the multiple respondents, including the NHAI, the ministry of road transport and highways, the Indore district collector, Indore Police and the road construction company. During Mondays hearing, the HC also reminded that it had ordered completion of the diversion road within four weeks in September 2024, but still that road remained unfinished. The NHAI reportedly blamed a ten-day stone crusher unit strike for the delay in completing the diversion road. The HC, however, remained unimpressed by the NHAIs reasoning. The PIL will next be heard on July 7. Importantly, three men, including 65-year-old Vijay Panchal, 55-year-old critically ailing patient Balram Patel and 32-year-old security guard Sandeep Patel, had reportedly died due to the traffic jam between Mangliya and Arjun Baroda villages in Indore district on the Indore-Dewas Highway on June 26-27. The nearly 8-km long traffic jam, which continued for more than 30 hours on June 26-27, reportedly happened due to delayed construction of a six-lane bridge, unfinished service roads and absence of adequate traffic diversion plan.
Newly elected MP BJP chief Khandelwal warns party members: 'Stay disciplined or face trouble'
BHOPAL: Second-time MLA and former MP from central Madhya Pradeshs Betul district, 60-year-old Hemant Khandelwal was elected unopposed as the new president of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. In his first, albeit brief, address as the ruling partys state chief, Khandelwal made his intentions clear by issuing a stern warning: Stay disciplined. Those deviating from the party line will be in trouble. Samaaj hamse Congress se hatkar achche aacharan ki ummeed rakhta hai, is manch aur aap sabki jimmedari hai ki hum sab janta ki bhavnaon ke anuroop apnaa aacharan rakhein, anushasan mein rahein (Compared to the Congress, people expect good conduct from us. Its the responsibility of this platform and all of you to conduct ourselves in accordance with the peoples sentiments and remain disciplined), Khandelwal said. Har voh vyakti jo party ke liye samarpit hai uska sammaan hoga aur har voh vyakti jo party se daayen baayen hota hai usey dikkat aayegi (All those committed to the party will get respect, but those deviating from the party line will be in trouble), he said while addressing a crowded auditorium at the BJP state headquarters. Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the partys national joint general secretary (organisation) Shiv Prakash, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, and outgoing state party chief VD Sharma were present at the event. Striking a chord with the partys karyakartas (workers), Khandelwal said, I dont possess any special or additional qualification. Im a common worker like you all. Khandelwals terse message, Stay in line, dont go right or left assumed particular significance amid a spate of controversial remarks made by senior party leaders recently, which have caused public embarrassment for the BJP. Several senior BJP leaders from the state, including Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Dewda, cabinet minister Vijay Shah, ex-union minister and seven-time MP Faggan Singh Kulaste, and first-time MLA Narendra Prajapati, have recently landed the party in trouble with their controversial statements related to Operation Sindoor. While Shah, one of the partys most senior tribal leaders, is facing a criminal case in Indore for his remark calling Colonel Sofia Qureshi, the public face of Operation Sindoor, a sister of terrorists, Deputy CM Dewda has come under fire from the opposition Congress for saying that the Indian Army and soldiers bow at PM Modis feet. Outgoing state BJP chief VD Sharma, who led the party for a record five years, had to frequently tackle outbursts from outspoken party MLAs, including Pradeep Patel (Mauganj) and Pritam Lodhi (Pichhore). Verbal spats involving other lawmakers, such as the continued attacks by first-time MLA and ex-MP Riti Pathak against Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla, and the ongoing feud between Minister Govind Rajput and ex-minister Bhupendra Singh, have also given the Congress fresh ammunition to target the BJP. Senior minister and former union minister Prahlad Patel also faced criticism from the opposition in March for stating that people are becoming habitual of begging from the government. In response to the growing list of controversies, the BJP recently organised a training camp for its lawmakers, both MPs and MLAs, at Pachmarhi, the states only hill station. The focus of the camp was to train legislators to avoid speaking beyond the partys official line and to maintain proper public conduct.

25 MP govt employees suspected of using fake ST certificates for jobs; racket under probe
BHOPAL: At least 25 state government employees, including teachers, cops, engineers and doctors are suspected to be working on the basis of fake scheduled tribe certificates in Madhya Pradesh the state having the highest 21%-plus tribal population in India. A case has been registered by the MP Polices special task force (MPSTF) against six state government teachers, including three females identified as Sitaram, Jawahar Singh, Sarla Manjhi, Rajesh Kumar, Kusum Manjhi and Sunita Rawat for allegedly getting government jobs on the basis of fake scheduled tribe (ST) certificates, deputy SP (MPSTF-Gwalior Unit) Sanjiv Tiwari said. But its not just these six teachers only who attained state government jobs with the help of fake ST certificates. 19 more state government employees, including lecturers, cops, doctors and assistant engineers too are suspected to have attained state government jobs and investigations are underway. The probe began with a complaint to the special director general of police (Special DG-MPSTF) Pankaj Srivastava. Consequently an 11-strong special investigation team of Gwalior unit was formed under supervision of SP-STF Rajesh Bhadauria to further the investigations. Based on subsequent investigations 25 government employees were tracked, who are suspected to have attained the jobs by using the fake ST certificates. A case was subsequently registered against six of them (all teachers), while further investigations are underway against 19 others. Based on the findings of the continuing probe, more names will be added in the FIR. Not just have these employees been working in various state government departments, including education, health, revenue, police and even law department for as long as 10-15 years, but the organized racket which helped them get the fake caste certificates, has also ensured that they were not caught during the verification of their joining documents. Were now looking for those running the organized racket, a senior MPSTF officer told TNIE. Importantly, the majority of the fake certificates have been made in the states Gwalior-Chambal region. The same region which decades back was infamous for notorious dacoits, had recently hogged headlines after emerging as the nucleus of the recently busted Aadhar-manipulation based MP Police Constable Recruitment Exam 2023 racket. So far more than 30 cases have been registered in that case and over 30 people, including alleged racket operators, Aadhar centres operators, solvers from MP and Bihar and beneficiary candidates have been arrested in those cases.

NCB busts major darknet drug cartel; Muvattupuzha native among two taken into custody
KOCHI: In a breakthrough, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a massive international drug racket operating through the darknet, seizing over Rs one crore worth of narcotics and crypto assets. A Muvattupuzha native, believed to be the kingpin, is among two people taken into custody in the high-stakes operation code-named 'Operation MELON.' Led by the NCB Cochin Zonal Unit, the raid resulted in the seizure of 1,127 LSD blots, 131.66 grams of Ketamine, and cryptocurrency assets worth Rs 70 lakh -- marking one of the biggest LSD busts in the country. The operation was set in motion on June 28 when officers intercepted 280 LSD blots from three international parcels at the Kochi International Post Office. All three parcels were traced back to the prime accused in Muvattupuzha. A swift follow-up search at his residence the next day unearthed 847 more LSD blots and over 130 grams of Ketamine -- together valued at Rs 35.12 lakh. The real shocker came from the digital trail. Officials discovered a pen drive containing TAILS OS, the operating system designed for accessing darknet markets, along with multiple crypto wallets, hard disks with incriminating material, and a hardware wallet loaded with Rs 70 lakh worth of USDT. Investigators also found evidence of custodial wallets on global platforms like Binance, which are now under scrutiny. NCB sources revealed that the accused operated under the alias 'Ketamelon', identified as Indias only Level 4 vendor on the darknet -- a status awarded based on the quality of drugs sold and customer satisfaction. The moniker is said to be inspired by his early dealings in Ketamine, before expanding to LSD. According to the NCB, the drugs were allegedly sourced from Gunga Din, a UK-based supplier linked to Dr Seuss aka DS or Tribe Seuss, the worlds largest LSD distributor. Over the past 14 months, Ketamelon is believed to have dispatched nearly 600 consignments to cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Patna, Bhopal, Delhi, and remote regions in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This is the second-largest LSD seizure in India, after the 2023 bust of another five-star-rated darknet cartel. The Muvattupuzha native is suspected to be the kingpin of this sophisticated trafficking network. Investigations are on to identify the end-users and other operatives, an NCB officer said. The bust has exposed how deeply entrenched darknet-facilitated narcotics trade has become, and officials believe more shocking revelations could follow.
Hemant Khandelwal set to become Madhya Pradesh BJP chief; to be elected unopposed
BHOPAL:Second time legislator and former Lok Sabha member from the tribal dominated Betul district Hemant Khandelwal is all set to be the next Madhya Pradesh BJP president. The 60-year-old commerce and law graduate, who is the second time legislator from Betul seat, was the lone leader to file the nomination for the state BJP chiefs election at the state party HQ in Bhopal on Tuesday. Importantly, his nomination papers had as the proposer, the states CM Dr Mohan Yadav himself with whom the seasoned Vaishya community leader is believed to have close rapport. Coming from a family with deep RSS roots (his father Vijay Khandelwal was the BJP MP from Betul LS seat four times between 1996 and 2008) Khandelwal has previously served as the party's Betul district unit chief and also the state partys treasurer. He was currently heading the Kushabhau Thakre Trust. With Khandelwals nomination for the post being the single nomination, he is set to be elected unopposed as the new president of MP BJP. The formal declaration of him succeeding the outgoing state party chief VD Sharma (who was the president for a record five plus years) will be made on Wednesday. Khandelwal will possibly be the second MP BJP president from central MP, after present union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who while being the fifth time MP from central MPs Vidisha seat had headed the saffron partys state organization for 263 days in 2005-06. Following his ascendency as the state BJP chief, he will be the fifth sitting MLA in 45 years to head the saffron party in MP. Prior to him, former CMs Sunderlal Patwa, Kailash Joshi, Nandkumar Sai and present Vidhan Sabha Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar had served as state BJP chiefs while being members of the Vidhan Sabha. This latest development also marks a departure from the 15-year-old trend of sitting MPs (members of Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha) heading the partys organization in the central Indian state. Prior to him the last four MP BJP presidents, including the outgoing chief VD Sharma and his predecessors Rakesh Singh, Nandkumar Singh Chauhan and Narendra Singh Tomar have all been sitting MPs. The politics behind Khandelwals ascendency as MP BJP chief According to state BJP insiders, the Vaishya community has been the most loyal and traditional voter of the party since the Bhartiya Jana Sangha (BJS) days. But currently the community doesnt have a major decision-making position in the ruling party in MP and adjoining states, including UP, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Handing Khadelwal the command of the state BJP will send positive signals to the Vaishya community, whose politician will head the state BJP after 31 years. The last time a politician from the Vaishya community headed the saffron party in MP was Lakhiram Agrawal between 1990-94. Khandelwal not just hails from the Vaishya community, but is also considered to be a leader well connected with grassroot workers. In the last few years, the MP BJPs organization has been working more in a glitzy and five-star cultural manner, where those heading the party have not been as accessible to the workers as in the past. Khandelwals election to state party chiefs post will usher hope of the karyakarta getting empowered back, a state BJP leader told TNIE. Also, Khandelwal is acceptable and enjoys rapport with most senior BJP leaders, including the present CM Dr Mohan Yadav as well as the former CM and present union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. According to BJP insiders, when Khandelwal contested the LS by-poll from Betul seat in 2008 (which was necessitated by his four-times MP father Vijay Khandelwals death) then MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan addressed more than 100 public meetings, ultimately ensuring Khandelwals win by 35,000-plus votes. It's also believed that the CM Rise School model instituted by then CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan in 2022 was inspired by the Samekit School model of Khandelwal, whose family runs a premier school in Betul and also an agri industrial cluster in the central MP district. As per informed political sources, a senior RSS leader from MP (who enjoys proximity with the top BJP bosses in Delhi), who is believed to have played a key role in Dr Mohan Yadavs ascendency as MP CM in December 2023 might have also been instrumental in Khandelwal being made the new state BJP chief.

Namibian cheetahs first home Kuno records 19 per cent tourist growth in 2024-25
BHOPAL: Tourist arrivals at Madhya Pradeshs Kuno National Park (KNP) the first home of African cheetahs in India have grown by 19% in 2024-25 compared to the previous year. Just a day before the park is closed for tourists as part of the annual July 1-September 30 monsoon closure the KNP management released figures of tourist arrivals spanning between 2019-20 and 2024-25. The figures showed that the tourist inflow at the park grew by 19%, rising from 3,221 travellers in 2023-24 to 3,833 (including 21 foreign tourists) in 2024-25. As part of re-introducing the fastest moving animal on earth into the Indian wilds again seven decades after it went extinct in the Indian forests due to rampant poaching -- 20 African cheetahs (from Namibia and South Africa) were introduced at the KNP in Sheopur district between September 2022 and February 2023. The tourist arrivals at the park which stood at 804 in 2019-20 grew by 12% to 903 in 2020-21. The numbers rose by 34% to 1,211 in 2021-22 and by 20% to 1,459 in 2022-23. The maximum surge in tourist arrivals, however, was reported in 2023-24, after the cheetahs were set free into the free ranging forests of the park located in the Gwalior-Chambal region of MP, Rajasthan. The tourist traffic grew by a massive 121% in 2023-24 to 3,221 tourists compared to the 1,459 total tourist arrivals at the park in 2022-23. The increase continued in 2024-25 also as the tourist arrivals grew by 19% to 3,833 tourists between Oct-June. Importantly, the park is open for the tourists annually from October to June and remains closed due to monsoon break between July 1 and September 30. Currently, there are 10 adult African (Namibian and South African) cheetahs and their 19 Indian born cubs at KNP. The Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in western Madhya Pradeshs Mandsaur district became the second home to the African cheetahs in India on April 20, after South African male coalition Prabhas and Pavak were moved there from the KNP.

BHOPAL: Massive protests by tribals accompanied by pressure by union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has compelled the Dr Mohan Yadav-led Madhya Pradesh government to put on hold the process of creating Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Wildlife Sanctuary in Sehore district of the central Indian state. In pursuance with the directions from the government, the proposal to create the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Wildlife Sanctuary in parts of the Sehore Forest Division is put on hold. Entire process on the issue is put on hold till further orders, principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF-Wildlife) Subhranjan Sen wrote to the DFO-Sehore on Monday. Importantly, the proposal to create the sanctuary in the Sehore Forest Division (which comes under the home district and parliamentary constituency of the current union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan) was first mooted during the Congress government in the state, when the current Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar was the states forest minister. Around six years later, in May 2025, the present BJP regime headed by Dr Mohan Yadav had set the ball rolling again on the issue, seeking a revised proposal from DFO-Sehore to create the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Wildlife Sanctuary. Just a month later, 50 houses of the tribal community were reportedly demolished by the forest department for removing encroachments from the Khivni Wildlife Sanctuary in the adjoining Dewas district on June 23. Four days later, massive protest by tribals was reported in Sehore district, where the local MP and union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was attending a development meeting at the district collectorate. The tribal protestors, including men and women from Sehore and Dewas districts were protesting the June 23 demolition of houses and the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Wildlife Sanctuary, which they alleged would affect 2 lakh people in Sehore and Dewas districts. Striking a chord with the protestors, Chouhan not just took the memorandum of demands from the protestors, but also targeted the forest department saying, Im reiterating and cautioning the forest department and forest development corporation staff that dont commit this mistake again. Whatever is being done by them is to tarnish the image of the government. A day later on Sunday, the union minister and ex-MP CM Chouhan accompanied by the tribals met with the present CM Dr Mohan Yadav in Bhopal and raised the issue. With the opposition Congress also latching on to the tribal anger, the MP CM sent states tribal affairs minister Vijay Shah, who is facing criminal case for his controversial sister of terrorists remark against Colonel Sofia Qureshi, to Dewas district on Sunday, to meet with the affected tribals. A few hours later, the CM Dr Mohan Yadav said, I met people from the tribal community (accompanied by the union agriculture minister) whove been affected by the action by the forest department for the Khivni Sanctuary. Have heard their complaints and ordered investigations. Ive also instructed officials to take strict action against the culprits and provide the victims the benefits of government facilities. The forest department has also been instructed to avoid any such action during the rainy season. Later, on Sunday evening, the present DFO-Sehore, Magan Singh Dabar (who himself is a tribal) was transferred and Archana Patel appointed the new DFO-Sehore.
BBA student suffers 50% burns in acid attack by female college mate in Jabalpur; accused held
BHOPAL: A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) girl student has sustained around 50% burn injuries in an acid attack allegedly by her female college mate-childhood friend in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The incident happened in Awadhpuri Colony under Gwarighat police station area at around 8 pm on Sunday, when the accused girl Ishita Sahu (22) reached outside the house of Shraddha Das (23) and called her outside. Both the girls who are BBA students at the same college and friends since the last many years, have not been in talking terms for a couple of months, over some personal issue. When Shraddha did not come out, Ishita said she had a surprise in store for her, ultimately forcing her to come outside. Just when Shraddha came out of the house, Ishita allegedly threw a jar full of acid on her, causing severe burn injuries. Shraddha was subsequently admitted at the Mohanlal Hargovind Das Trust Hospital in Jabalpur with multiple burn injuries on the face, hands and legs. She has suffered around 50% burns and her condition is stated stable, a Jabalpur police officer said. Acting in the matter, the police have taken the accused, Ishita Sahu, in custody. Primary investigations have revealed that Ishita was accompanied by a man to a chemical shop before the alleged acid attack. She had introduced the man as her colleges teacher to the shop owner and sought acid for colleges use, after which she managed to get the acid bottle. The accused girl has been taken into custody and booked under BNS Section 124(2) which deals with voluntarily causing grievous hurt with acid, etc. Further investigations are underway, Jabalpur district police superintendent Sampat Upadhyaya said on Monday. Ongoing probe has revealed that both the girls were not in talking terms for a couple of months which strained their relation. One of the girls had blamed the other for something that had put her in a spot before her family.

SC orders release of law student from preventive detention under NSA
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court recently directed the immediate release of a 24-year-old law student hailing from Madhya Pradesh who had been under preventive detention for nearly a year under the National Security Act, 1980 (NSA), after noting that detention of the appellant, was wholly untenable. The top court ordered that the petitioner (appellant) Annu alias Aniket, be released immediately from Central Jail, Bhopal, if he was not required in any other criminal case. A two-judge vacation bench of the top court, led by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Vinod Chandran observed that the grounds mentioned in the order, which include disruption of law and order did not satisfy the requirements of Section 3(2) of the NSA. We are of the view that the reasons for which he has been taken into preventive detention does not satisfy the requirement of Sub Section(2) of Section 3 of the NSA, 1980. Preventive detention of the appellant, therefore, becomes wholly untenable, the court said. Section 3(2) empowers the Union and state governments to order preventive detention of a person. The petitioner, had been booked following an altercation on June 14, 2024, at a university campus in Betul, after he allegedly clashed with a professor. Following this, an FIR was filed for attempt to murder and other offences against Annu, forcing him to surrender on June 16 and was placed in judicial custody. While in jail, the NSA detention order was issued against him. This order was later confirmed and extended every three months. The Court noted that the detention order had been extended four times, with the last extension valid till July 12, 2025. After hearing Annus appeal, the apex court said, At the most, these are all issues of law and order. Public order is something bigger.

Three dead in Indore traffic jam due to poor planning, bridge work cause 32- hour gridlock
BHOPAL: A nearly eight-kilometre-long traffic jam, which lasted up to 32 hours due to ongoing six-lane bridge construction, unfinished service roads, and the absence of a proper traffic diversion plan, has reportedly led to the deaths of three individuals on the outskirts of Indore, Madhya Pradeshs most developed city, on Thursday and Friday. The victims included 65-year-old farmer Kamal Panchal, 55-year-old cancer patient Balram Patel, and 32-year-old security guard Sandeep Patel, all of whom succumbed to health complications while stuck in the prolonged traffic snarl. Recounting the ordeal, Vijay Panchal, son of the deceased farmer Kamal Panchal from Bijalpur (Indore), said, I was driving with my father, mother and wife to attend the Trayodashah ceremony (13th-day rituals) of my deceased aunt in Dewas district when we got trapped in the jam for over two hours. The stretch between Mangliya and Arjun Baroda on the Indore-Dewas Bypass normally takes 1520 minutes to cover. Amid the jam, my father suddenly began feeling suffocated and complained of chest pain. It took us nearly half an hour to get out of the jam with the help of locals, as there were no officials present to manage the situation. By the time we reached the hospital in Dewas, doctors declared him dead. Later, we learnt two more people had died in the same jam. How many lives will it take for the administration to wake up? Among the other victims was Balram Patel, a 55-year-old cancer patient from Shujalpur in Shajapur district, who was en route to Indores Choithram Hospital. He reportedly died in the traffic after both oxygen cylinders he was dependent on were exhausted due to the delay. Sandeep Patel, a 32-year-old security guard, also died after experiencing chest pain while stuck in the same jam. His family rushed him to a hospital via Mangliya in Indore, but he was declared dead upon arrival. The massive jam was triggered by bridge construction work, which forced vehicles onto broken, waterlogged, and unfinished service roads, worsened by rainfall. The absence of an adequate route diversion plan severely escalated the situation. Over the 3032 hour period from Thursday afternoon to Friday night, the condition of the roads deteriorated rapidly. Heavy vehicles, diverted onto narrow lanes meant for smaller traffic, caused further damage, with deep potholes forming due to the downpour. No alternate routes were readied through nearby villages, compounding the traffic crisis. Following public outrage and media attention, Indore District Collector Ashish Singh held an emergency meeting on Friday with officials from the NHAI, traffic police, Public Works Department (PWD), and Indore Municipal Corporation. Key measures decided at the meeting included immediate repairs of damaged service lanes using paver blocks, formation of inter-departmental Quick Response Teams (QRTs) for traffic management, diversion of heavy vehicles outside Indore via alternate routes, and round-the-clock monitoring of traffic and drainage to avoid waterlogging. Meanwhile, angered by the deaths, opposition Congress leaders including Dewas district president Manoj Rajani and state spokesperson A. Chaurasia, have demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for each bereaved family. They have also called for a case of culpable homicide to be registered against officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the contractor responsible for the bridge construction.
Youth murders girlfriend by slitting her throat at Narasinghpur district hospital in Madhya Pradesh
BHOPAL: A 21-year-old Abhishek Koshthi has been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of an 18-year-old girl in full public glare inside the Narsinghpur District Hospital premises in Madhya Pradesh on Friday. During interrogation by the police, Abhishek revealed that he knew the teenage girl for the last two years. Lately, he suspected that she was getting close to another youth, owing to which he chose to murder her, police sources told TNIE on Saturday. The victim was pursuing nursing training at the hospital. She was the only daughter to her parents who are vegetable vendors. On Friday, just a few hours after the ghastly killing, the Narsinghpur district police superintendent Mrigakhi Deka had said: The incident happened at around 3 pm, while the girl was standing in the hospital premises. The youth (who is possibly her lover) came there and attacked the girl, slitting her throat with a knife that led to her instant death. The accused then attempted to take his life failing which he fled the spot. There are several eye-witnesses to the crime, including doctors and nurses. The incident has also been captured in the CCTV cameras at the hospital. Hospitals male nursing officer Nalin who was present at the spot of the brutal crime, recounted. When I tried to intervene, the attacker threatened to kill me. He subsequently slit the girls throat with a black knife. Subsequently, he escaped from the hospital premises, which had private security personnel on duty. The shocking crime has also exposed the state of security at government hospitals in the state. Private security is entrusted with the task of providing security at the hospital and the place where the crime happened was a critical part of the hospitals Emergency Unit. Inadequate security at the hospital is definitely a contributor to the crime, a senior Narsinghpur district police officer said, while adding there was also a police chowki located in the hospital premises to take care of medico- legal cases. Well definitely write about the security aspect to the district administration in the entire matter and request for handling the issue on priority basis, the officer added. The youth has been remanded in custody. The murder follows the incident of a young girl delivering a stillborn baby in the hospital toilet 20 days ago. Further, the body of a newborn baby was mauled by a stray dog at a government hospital in Mhow sub division in Indore district. Prior to that, on May 10, the body of a youth (who died in a road accident) kept in a hall instead of the mortuary, for autopsy, was reportedly mutilated by stray dogs at the Narmadapuram district hospital in the wee hours.

Adulterated diesel stalls 19 vehicles in MP CM Mohan Yadavs convoy; petrol pump sealed in Ratlam
BHOPAL: A petrol pump in Madhya Pradeshs Ratlam district has been sealed after adulterated diesel from the outlet allegedly caused the breakdown of 19 vehicles in Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadavs convoy on Thursday night. The incident happened hours before the CM was to inaugurate the innovative Regional Industry, Skill and Employment (RISE) Conclave in the same western MP district on Friday afternoon. Drivers of the SUVs (brought from Indore) were forced to push the vehicles off the road, after the vehicles began jerking and stalling one after another. While the local administration scrambled to ensure that a replacement fleet was arranged at the earliest, the officials also assessed the possibility of adulterated diesel filled from a local petrol pump having caused the problem. As per sources more than 250 litres of diesel were filled in the vehicles from a local petrol pump. Though the petrol pump staff denied the possibility of supplying adulterated diesel, the officials hunch got strong after a local resident showed them a bottle filled from the same pump which had clearly visible layers of diesel as well as water. The food and civil supplies department staff immediately collected samples and analysed them, confirming the presence of water in the diesel supplied by the concerned pump. Entire matter is being probed, though the exact quantity of water cannot be specified immediately. The stock at the pump is being checked and findings will be summed up in the detailed report to the Ratlam district collector, a senior official of the food and civil supplies department Anand Gole said. With more than 16 hours left for the CMs actual visit, a replacement fleet was arranged from Indore within a few hours. A detailed probe is still underway into the issue, including the possibility of rainwater having seeped into the underground fuel tank at the petrol pump. For the time being, the petrol pump has been sealed, a senior official in Ratlam confirmed to TNIE . With the quirky incident taking place hours before the CMs visit, while the VIP visit remained unaffected, it rendered the opposition Congress ammo to target the government. Sharing a picture of the incident, state Congress spokesperson and ex-MLA Shailendra Patel posted on X (formerly twitter), Adulterated diesel in the CMs convoy! 19 vehicles stalled, this is the government they are running. BJP MLA clarifies over Vande Bharat train scuffle incident, says supporters' behaviour 'unfortunate'
JHANSI: BJP's Babina MLA Rajeev Singh on Thursday clarified his stand on the May 19 incident aboard the Vande Bharat Express, stating that a misunderstanding with fellow passengers escalated unnecessarily and that the altercation by his supporters in Jhansi was unfortunate and unintended. Addressing a press conference, the MLA said he was travelling with his wife and children from Delhi to Jhansi when he politely requested a passenger to swap seats so the family could sit together. According to the MLA, the passenger and his companion responded rudely and threatened him. He claimed video evidence now supports his version of events. The BJP had sought a reply from the legislator within seven days. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the altercation occurred on June 19 on the Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat Express, allegedly over changing seats and objectionable sitting posture inside the train. The situation escalated at Jhansi station, where a passenger was allegedly assaulted by some individuals linked to the ruling party MLA. On Thursday, Singh reiterated that he had filed a non-cognisable report (NCR) with the GRP that same evening after the encounter. He added that during the train journey, he had also sought assistance via the Rail Madad helpline, citing safety concerns. Later, when the train reached Jhansi, some of his local supporters, informed by his security personnel, allegedly assaulted one of the passengers. The MLA said this was done in over-enthusiasm and without his approval. He stated that he later apologised to the passengers, who accepted his regret and acknowledged the misunderstanding. The incident has drawn political reactions, with some opposition leaders and a former IPS officer demanding action. However, the passenger involved has not filed a formal complaint, and the matter is currently under police investigation.

Madhya Pradesh farmer who sought bride from religious stage goes missing after trip to Gorakhpur
BHOPAL: A month after a viral video showed 45-year-old part-time teacher and farmer Indra Kumar Tiwari appealing for a bride from the stage of a religious event in Madhya Pradeshs Jabalpur district, he has mysteriously gone missing. Tiwari, a resident of Padwar (Khitola) village in Jabalpur, was last seen on June 2. Before leaving, he told neighbours he was travelling to Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh and would return by June 6. When he failed to return, concerned villagers reported his disappearance, prompting the Majhouli Police Station to file a missing persons report on June 8. Police have since been trying to trace the middle-aged man, who has no close family members, complicating the investigation. Tiwaris public plea for marriage had gained attention after he spoke on stage during a religious gathering led by young preacher Swami Aniruddhacharya. According to locals, Tiwari had often expressed a desire to find a suitable match, possibly putting him on the radar of fraudsters running marriage scams. Before leaving for Gorakhpur, someone from there had met him. It is suspected he may have been lured with the promise of marriage, police sources involved in the probe said. Villagers claim that after his video went viral, unknown individuals contacted Tiwari, promising to arrange his marriage to a woman named Khushi. They reportedly asked him to bring jewellery and cash with him to Gorakhpur. Superintendent of Police Sampat Upadhyaya confirmed that Tiwari had indeed reached Gorakhpur, but disappeared shortly thereafter. Were actively investigating his disappearance. The lack of close relatives has made the case challenging, but were working on vital clues. The involvement of Looteri Dulhan (runaway bride) gangs is a possibility we are not ruling out, he said. The police continue to rely heavily on local villagers for leads, as they press on with efforts to solve the mystery of Tiwaris disappearance.
NHRC seeks ATR after caste assault on kathavachak sparks outrage in Etawah
LUCKNOW: Taking cognisance of an incident in Etawah where some upper caste men allegedly assaulted a kathavachak (religious storyteller) and his associate from the Yadav community and tonsured their heads, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Etawah district police, directing the authorities to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR). The development comes a day after a video of the assault surfaced on social media and went viral. Following the incident, district police arrested four persons accused of the act and sent them to jail after registering an FIR in the matter. The accused were identified as Nikki Awasthi (30), Pratham Dubey (24), Ashish Tiwari (21), and Uttam Awasthi (19), all belonging to the Brahmin community. According to police sources, the incident took place at Dadarpur village in Etawah district on Saturday after some villagers objected to kathavachak Mukut Munni identifying himself as a Brahmin. The NHRC sought the ATR from Etawah Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) on the basis of a complaint filed by a Bhopal-based organisation Dr Ambedkar Jankalyan Samiti which alleged that the religious speaker and his associate, who belong to a backward class, were assaulted, had their heads tonsured, were compelled to rub their noses at the feet of a woman, and had their instruments damaged. The allegations made in the complaint prima facie seem to be a serious violation of human rights of the victims, the Commission observed in its notice. Mukut Munni said the incident occurred after he disclosed his caste to the villagers. However, in a press statement, the police said that the social media team at police headquarters received an X post on Monday evening carrying a video showing the tonsuring of a kathavachak . Taking cognisance of the post, it was forwarded to the Etawah district police authorities for necessary action. Etawah SSP Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said, A video of villagers misbehaving with two individuals and cutting their hair against their will had surfaced. The accused were identified with the help of the video. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav termed the incident an attack on PDA (Pichhde, Dalit, and Alpsankhyak) and felicitated the two men at the party office in Lucknow on Tuesday. Claiming it to be an attack on PDA, Akhilesh said members of the PDA community were being intimidated under the current dispensation. If Bhagwat Katha is for everyone to listen to, then everyone can recite it as well. Bhagwat Katha is related to Lord Krishna, and if his true followers are stopped from reciting it, we will not tolerate this disrespect, he said. The SP chief further alleged that some people from upper castes wanted to maintain a monopoly over religious recitations. If these people have hostility towards PDA, then they should stop taking donations from the community, he added. Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh said unnecessary hype should not be created around the incident, as the accused had already been arrested. Caste has no privilege over merit and efficiency. One can do anything based on their ability. The incident is unfortunate. An FIR has been registered and the accused have been arrested. There is no need to give this incident a political turn, as no injustice will be done to anyone under this government, the minister said.

BHOPAL: The families of two students in Bhopal who are pursuing Islamic studies in Iran have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to work for peace between Iran and Israel. The two families from the Nishatpura area of Bhopal are hoping for a lasting ceasefire between the two warring nations to ensure the safety of their children even as one of them, Abrar Ali, doesnt seem to be willing to return to India. We desperately want him to return home. He (Abrar) has been living there in Iran for four years and says when he was there in their good times, how can he leave them in their bad times. Earlier, we used to talk to him via video call every alternate day, but since the war broke, weve hardly spoken to him. The last time we managed to talk to him, he said he cant leave Iran in the countrys bad times and that he's even willing to fight for them if the need arose, Abrars mother Shahnoor Begum told TNIE on Tuesday. Many of his Indian friends who studied with him at the madrasa in Qom have returned home to Maharashtra and even MP including Jaora town of Ratlam. His eldest brother Ghulam Ali and mother Shahnoor Begum have appealed to PM Narendra Modi to mediate between the two warring neighbours to usher peace in that war-torn region. Our PM has cordial relations, both with Israel and Iran. He can talk to both nations and play an important role in ushering peace there. The other student from Bhopal, Gul Afsha, 29, has been in Iran for the last six years, pursuing Islamic studies at a university in Mashhad. While were concerned about her safety, she (Gul) says till now shes safe and will try to return to India, once peace returns to Iran. Many of her friends who hail from Kashmir have safely returned home, but she is still staying back, waiting for the situation to normalize. We appeal to our PM to work for peace in that region, which alone will help bring our sister back home, Guls eldest brother Mohd Jawad said. Guls father Migdad Nusvi too reportedly pursued religious studies in Iran and returned home in 1990. Peace has 'Trump'ed after Iran's Monday night missile attack on a Qatar base

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: victims family to seek narco test of wife and key accused
BHOPAL: The family of Raja Raghuvanshi, the young Indore-based transporter who was murdered during his honeymoon in Meghalaya on 23 May, is preparing to move the Meghalaya High Court to demand Narco Analysis Tests for Rajas wife Sonam Raghuvanshi and co-accused Raj Kushwah. Rajas elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, confirmed on Monday that the family has already consulted advocates in Meghalaya and will soon file a petition. We believe the exact motive behind my brothers killing is still unclear. Sonam and Raj have given conflicting statements during police interrogation, seemingly to mislead investigators and shield one another, Vipin said. The family will also request a court-monitored probe into the alleged business dealings between Sonam and Raj, which came to light through Sonams brother, Govind. Govind recently told us that Sonam and Raj had started a firmoriginally intended to be his venture early this year. They allegedly operated it through a bank account in the name of Rajs mother, Chunni Devi, with transactions of around 7.58 lakh, Vipin added. Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Two more arrested in MP for destroying crucial evidence Owner of Indore flat detained In a fresh development, Lokendra Singh Tomar, the owner of the Indore flat where Sonam hid for nine days after the murder, has been detained by police in Gwalior for questioning. Meghalaya Police are en route to question Tomar, according to Gwalior Range DIG Amit Sanghi. This comes a day after the Meghalaya Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) made two more arrests in Madhya Pradesh. Building contractor-cum-property broker Shilom James and private security guard Balveer Ahirwar were arrested from Indore and Ashok Nagar, respectively. They allegedly assisted Sonam during her time in hiding from 30 May to 7 June. James had arranged the flat where Sonam stayed, while Ahirwar reportedly helped in destroying a black bag she left behind after fleeing Indore on 8 June. She later resurfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on 9 June. The bag believed to have contained a laptop, cash, jewellery, and a pistol was reportedly handed over by Ahirwar to James, who then burnt it behind his house. Meghalaya Police plan to conduct a forensic analysis of the remains to determine the contents of the bag. Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Two more arrested in MP for destroying crucial evidence
BHOPAL: Two more arrests have been made in Madhya Pradesh in connection with the murder of Indore-based transporter Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed on May 23 during a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Police, with assistance from local authorities, have arrested Indore-based building contractor Shilom James and private security guard Balveer Ahirwar from Indore and Ashok Nagar districts respectively. The duo has been accused of destroying a black trolley bag left behind by the prime conspirator, Sonam Raghuvanshi Rajas widow, at a rented flat in Indore. The bag reportedly contained crucial evidence related to the murder. James was apprehended on Saturday night while attempting to flee to Bhopal, whereas Ahirwar was arrested on Sunday morning from his native village in the Shadora area of Ashok Nagar district. Both men will be produced before a local court in Indore and taken on transit remand to Meghalaya for further investigation. With these arrests, the total number of accused apprehended in the case has risen to seven. Among them are the deceaseds wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, her employee and alleged lover Raj Kushwah, and three hired killers who carried out the murder at Sonam and Rajs behest in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya. Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Where was Sonam for 17 days after Rajas killing? Investigations have revealed that James had rented a flat in Indores Dewas Naka area to one of the killers, Vishal Chauhan, on May 30. Sonam subsequently used this flat to hide in Indore between May 30 and June 7 before fleeing to Uttar Pradesh. She resurfaced dramatically in Ghazipur on June 9 after being missing for 17 days. As James held the keys to the flat, he accessed the premises and found the black trolley bag left behind by Sonam. The bag allegedly contained her laptop, around Rs 5 lakh in cash, jewellery, and a pistol reportedly procured by Raj Kushwah from local arms suppliers in western Madhya Pradesh. According to investigators, CCTV footage from a nearby showroom showed security guard Balveer Ahirwar handing over the black bag to Shilom James, who then took it away in a car. When summoned for questioning by the Meghalaya Polices Special Investigation Team (SIT), James attempted to flee and was apprehended at the Bhorasa toll booth on the outskirts of Indore. Honeymoon murder: Accused stayed at Guwahati lodge days before killing Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya Subsequent interrogation of both accused revealed that James had burnt the black bag behind his house in Indore, with Ahirwars assistance. A police official close to the investigation stated, Both James and Ahirwar have been arrested for aiding the accused in destroying crucial evidence. The bag was particularly important as it potentially contained Sonams laptop, cash, jewellery, and a pistol sourced by Raj Kushwah for the murder. The firearm was intended as a backup in case the three hired men failed to kill Raja Raghuvanshi using sharp-edged weapons purchased from Guwahati under Sonams direction. The investigation into the murder case continues, as the Meghalaya Police seek to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and all those involved. Tiger which killed two men in seven months tracked and sedated in Madhya Pradeshs Seoni district
BHOPAL: A male tiger, which killed a youth in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday afternoon, was successfully tracked and sedated 22 hours later in the jungles of the same district, also known as the land of the Jungle Books Mowgli. The operation, aided by three patrolling elephants of the Pench Tiger Reserve, started at around 9 am. The tiger was spotted at around 11.30 am in the forests located around 15 km from the Bawanthadi village, where it had killed the 18-year-old Sumit Pandre on Friday. Subsequently, the big cat was sedated using a tranquilizer dart, the Pench Tiger Reserves deputy director Rajnish Singh told TNIE. The male tiger aged around five had been active in the buffer zone of the Pench Tiger Reserve and the adjoining territorial forests since November 2023. It covered a long range of 150-200 square km. The tiger which originated from Lalbarra in Balaghat district around 60 km from the dense forests of Seoni district and the Pench Tiger Reserve had not just killed the 18-year-old youth in Bawanthadi village on Friday, but also killed another man in similar fashion around the same village seven months ago. The same tiger had also charged forest department staff and villagers in the tiger reserves buffer zone multiple times, owing to which there was a threat of it attacking again. Both the men killed by the tiger -- on November 30, 2024 and June 20, 2025 -- had gone to graze cattle in the jungles. After the latest killing, angry villagers had blocked National Highway 44. Owing to the road blockade, which continued till late in the evening, long queues of vehicles were witnessed on both sides of the road.
A dispute on the New Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat Express led to the filing of a non-cognizable report by BJP MLA Rajeev Singh. The incident, involving a disagreement over seats and an 'objectionable' posture, escalated at Jhansi station. A passenger was allegedly assaulted by individuals linked to Singh.
POCSO-accused tribal youth gets Madhya Pradesh HC reprieve
BHOPAL: The MP High Court has commuted the death penalty of a 20-year-old tribal man convicted of rape in Khandwa district, reducing his sentence to 25 years of imprisonment. In 2023, a trial court had found him guilty of raping and attempting to murder a 4-year-old girl. Hearing the petition challenging the April 2023 Khandwa districts Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act courts order rendering the youth death sentence, a two-judge bench of Justices Vivek Agrawal and Devnarayan Mishra held that though raping a four-year-old innocent child and strangling her and throwing her in a deserted place is a cruel act, considering the family background of the youth, the death sentence is not appropriate. Hence, the sentence imposed upon the appellant for the offence punishable under Sections 363, 450, 307, 201 of the Indian Penal Code is affirmed, but his sentence for the offence punishable under Sections 6 of the POCSO Act is converted from capital punishment to the rigorous imprisonment of 25 years with the fine amount of Rs 10,000 Sentence not apt The court said though raping a girl is cruel, considering the family background of the youth, the death sentence is not appropriate. 25 year RI & Rs 10,000 fine His sentence has been converted from capital punishment to an RI of 25 years with a fine of Rs 10,000.
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has commuted the death sentence of a 20-year-old tribal man convicted of raping and attempting to kill a four-year-old girl, reducing his punishment to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. The decision was delivered by a division bench comprising Justices Vivek Agarwal and Devnarayan Mishra, who observed that while the act was undeniably brutal, it did not meet the threshold of rutality required for the death penalty under the arest of rare doctrine. The case involved the convict, a 20-year-old from a Scheduled Tribe, who was found guilty by a trial court under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act), and sentenced to death. According to the prosecution, the convict entered the complainant's hut under the pretext of requesting a cot to sleep on, and later abducted and raped the minor victim from a nearby house during the night. He then left her in an unconscious state in a mango orchard, believing her to be dead. The High Court, while acknowledging the horrifying nature of the crime, noted: No doubt that appellants act was brutal as he has committed rape upon the victim of four years and three months of age and after committing rape also throttled her treating her dead and thrown the victim in such a place where she could not be searched and left the spot but it is also clear that he has not committed brutality, distinguishing between barbaric acts and acts of extreme cruelty or depravity. The bench considered several mitigating factors in its decision. The convict was described as an uneducated youth from a tribal community, whose parents never tried to educate or properly care for him. He left his home at an early age and was working in a roadside eatery to earn a living. There was no evidence of prior criminal conduct, and the court found no adverse reports regarding his behaviour. The bench further noted that the environment in which the convict grew up did not provide him with the proper atmosphere to develop. The High Court affirmed the conviction under Sections 363, 450, 307, and 201 of the IPC, but commuted the death penalty under Section 6 of the POCSO Act to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 10,000. In default of payment, the convict will serve an additional year of rigorous imprisonment. The decision reflects the courts view that, despite the gravity of the offence and the young age of the victim, the circumstances of the convicts background and the absence of extreme brutality did not justify the death penalty in this case.
Two Bhopal doctors anxiously await return of children stranded in war-hit Iran
BHOPAL: Two senior Unani medicine doctors in Bhopal are waiting with bated breath for the safe return of their children, both medical students, who are stranded in war-ravaged Iran . Dr Ehsan Azmi, a medical officer at Bhopals Government HSZH Unani Medical College, is anxious for the safe return of his daughter Areej Ehsan, a second-year (fourth semester) MBBS student. Equally concerned is Dr Shahid Khan, a medical officer at Unani Shifakhana-Bhopal, whose son Mohd Haris Khan is in the eighth semester (fourth year) of the same course. Both Areej and Mohd Haris are pursuing their MBBS at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. Before Monday, my daughter said it seemed they were surviving in the jaws of death and destruction. But from Monday, the Indian Embassy in Tehran started working on a war footing to rescue the Indian students via the Indian Medical Students Association in the Iranian capital. We were particularly concerned about the safety of children, as there are reports that some of the nuclear scientists who were killed in the barrage of Israeli strikes, were actually from the Shahid Beheshti University only, Dr Azmi told TNIE on Friday. Originally from Azamgarh district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Dr Azmi added, We had a slight sigh of relief when we came to know about the students, including my daughter, having been shifted by the Indian Embassy from war-ravaged Tehran to Qom city (around 160 km from Tehran) on June 15. How do the militaries of Israel and Iran compare amid fears of an all-out war? As per the latest information in the closed social media group of parents of Indian medical students in Iran, our children have been shifted to northeastern Irans Mashhad city, which is close to Irans border with Turkmenistan and relatively peaceful. Three special flights will take off from there on Friday night, Saturday morning and evening. I hope to meet my daughter in Delhi by Saturday, he added. While his daughters safe return remains the top priority, Dr Azmi is also worried about her academic future. The attacks happened in the middle of the examinations. We don't know what the future holds, or how their academic future will be addressed if the war continues for long. For the time being, all I can say is that the Indian Embassy is managing the students very efficiently and speedily. Dr Shahid Khan echoed the concerns, particularly as his son is nearing completion of the five-year (ten-semester) medical course. There are around 600-700 Indian students, 95 per cent of whom are medical students, stuck in Irans Mashhad city. Weve been informed that they will be safely rescued by Saturday. These students are from three Tehran-based government medical universities, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and Iran University of Medical Sciences. We wont be able to sleep soundly until our children return home safely, he added. Five or six days back, we were in deep fear when told by my son that there were sounds of bombardment all over in Tehran. There were missile strikes and deafening explosions everywhere. Now we are relatively relieved, but still in panic till they return home safely. The Embassy officials have advised all Indian students not to share pictures or details of their locations for security reasons, Dr Khan said.

ASHA worker duped by cyber fraudsters; fakes own abduction after lottery scam in MP
BHOPAL:An ASHA worker in Madhya Pradeshs Jabalpur district suffered mental trauma and financial loss after cyber fraudsters lured her with a fake lottery, manipulated her with arrest threats, and pushed her to fake her own kidnapping. In March 2025, Jabalpur-resident 36-year-old Pushpalata Jharia got a call from a foreign VPN number, where the caller informed her about having won gold, diamond and a lottery prize worth Rs 10 lakh. To get the prize, she was first asked to deposit some money online, and then the fraudsters started contacting her regularly. A few days later, the fraudsters said that the person assigned to deliver the lottery prize had been arrested. Since her Aadhaar card copy was with him, they warned, she could also face arrest soon. Caught between fear and greed, the woman, whose husband does small jobs and the couple have two children, sent four lakh rupees online. When the relatives came to know about such a big transaction, they questioned the woman, but the fraudsters had cautioned her that if she told anyone, the reward would be cancelled, which made her remain silent. On April 23, she went to her parents home. Two days later she left saying that she was going to Bargi, but then went missing. Her family lodged a missing report with the local police on May 4. Swayed by the fraudsters, the woman kept wandering from Jabalpur to Mumbai, then Surat and finally to Delhi. She spent the nights at railway stations, ate free food, and kept sending more money to the fraudsters by working wherever possible. Her ordeal worsened when the fraudsters instructed her to fake her own kidnapping. She recorded a video in tears and sent it to them, which they forwarded to her husband on June 1, demanding Rs 2 lakh as ransom. They threatened that failure to pay would result in her being killed and her body dismembered and dumped in a forest. Worried about her daughter's life, her mother filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. On the court's direction, the police deployed four teams for the search. During this time, the woman's phone was stolen, but she called her relatives from someone else's phone, which gave her location in Greater Noida. On Monday (June 16), the police team recovered her safely from there. Though reunited with her family after a month and a half, the woman remains mentally disturbed, experiencing dizziness, trembling, and delusional belief that the fraudsters are innocent and will still reward her. Police have initiated her counselling and launched a search for the cyber criminals. The victim's sister-in-law, Asha Jharia, while recounting what happened over the last few months, said, when she was constantly asking for money from relatives and villagers, we asked her why she needed money. She said that she is helping a relative. Once she even sent money from my daughter's phone. We explained many times that when there is no money in your own house, then why are you helping others, but she was not ready to accept. Pushpalatas college-going daughter, Poonam, said, My mother got a call in March, in which a reward was promised, which included gold and diamond jewellery and cash. In return, she was asked for five lakh rupees. Slowly, mother kept giving money. Later, one day, a message came about kidnapping, which scared all of us. We contacted the police. The last call came early this month, saying that 'Weve left your mother in Delhi, go and pick her up.' Since then, the calls have stopped. Shes back home, but still thinks that she will get the reward. According to Circle SP (Bargi-Jabalpur), A Mishra, under whose supervision the case is being investigated, four to five police teams had been deployed to trace the woman. Wherever the call came from, our team reached there, but in each case, the woman had borrowed a phone from an unknown person to make the call, he said. The investigation later revealed that those whose phones were used were innocent and had merely offered help. Mishra added that the situation worsened when the fraudsters sent a video of the womans fake kidnapping to her family, which was traced to a foreign IP address. This country is not cooperating with us these days, he said. The case took a more disturbing turn when threatening audio messages with abusive language began to arrive, warning that the woman would be killed. When we recovered her in Delhi, she was sitting alone. We are counselling her because she still has not come out of the delusion. She believes she has not been conned and that she will still get the reward, he added.

Diwali brings festive cheer to Ladli Behnas as monthly aid hiked to Rs 1,500: MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav
BHOPAL: The long-awaited Rs 250 monthly hike under the Chief Minister Ladli Behna Scheme will happen on the festival of lights Diwali, chief minister Dr Mohan Yadav announced on Thursday. Our Sankalp Patra (2023 poll manifesto) promised to raise the monthly sum under the scheme to Rs 3000 in five years. We will give additional Rs 250 (above the Rs 1250 per month sum) on Raksha Bandhan and then hike the monthly sum to Rs 1500 from Diwali, the MP CM announced in Indore on Thursday. Well increase the monthly sum again in 2026 and then in 2027 and by the time of the next assembly elections in 2028, we will hike the monthly sum to Rs 3000 at all costs, Yadav added. The scheme aimed to render monthly financial benefits to financially weak women was launched by then MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan in June 2023 at Jabalpur, by crediting the first Rs 1000 monthly instalment into the accounts of the beneficiaries. Chouhan, the current union agriculture minister, had at the time of the schemes launch in June 2023, promised to increase the monthly benefits under the scheme gradually by Rs 250 per month over a period of time, to ultimately take the monthly sum to Rs 3000. In line with that promise, Chouhan had hiked the Rs 1000 monthly sum by Rs 250 to Rs 1250 in September 2023 just two months before the assembly polls, in which the monthly benefit scheme turned out to be a game-changer for the BJP, rendering it an unprecedented victory. Since then, the monthly sum under the scheme has remained unchanged, often prompting the opposition Congress to question when the monthly sum be hiked and ultimately be taken to Rs 3000 per month. In the 2025-26 MP annual budget, a sum of Rs 18,669 crore has been allocated for benefits under the Ladli Behna Scheme to 1.27 crore beneficiary women. The states budget had also mentioned providing insurance and pension cover to the beneficiaries of the same scheme by linking them with centralgovernments insurance and pension schemes. The scheme which also played a key role in the crucial women vote siding with the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, rendering it a historic 29-0 win in the state, has also inspired similar direct monetary benefit scheme for financially weak women in other BJP ruled states, including Maharashtra, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Delhi.

Bhopal Diary | CM turns fitness guru for young legislators
A resolute grappler in his younger days, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav turned yoga and fitness guru for young and first-time ministers and legislators ahead of the final day of the three-day BJP training camp for 200 odd MPs and MLAs at Pachmarhi hill station recently. Early on the final morning, the CM demonstrated the toughest Shirshasana and Mayurasana. Racalling his time as a wrestler, the CM highlighted the importance of staying fit and strong. He even challenged young MLAs to bend his arm, which they failed to do. Many youngsters could be heard murumuring later that the CM is rock solid, even at the age of 60. 2-time former MLA quits Congress Two-time former MLA Virendra Raghuvanshi has quit the Congress 19 months after he joined the grand old party having quit the BJP. Citing health reasons, Raghuvanshi quit the principal opposition party on Monday. Raghuvanshi is the former MLA from Kolaras and Shivpuri seats of Gwalior-Chambal regions Shivpuri district. He had won the Shivpuri assembly seat in a 2006 byelection as a Congress candidate. Twelve years later, he won the Kolaras seat on a BJP ticket, but left the ruling party in September 2023, two months before elections and rejoined the Congress. Raghuvanshi, however, was denied a ticket by the Congress in the 2023 assembly polls. Congress rebuilding meet turns battleground A meeting of the ambitious Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, the statewide campaign to rebuild the Congress in MP, turned into a battlefield of two rival factions on Tuesday. Honeymoon murder case: Meghalaya cops back in Indore to speed up probe as new angle emerges
BHOPAL: A week after making a series of arrests in connection with the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, the special investigation team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police has returned to Indore again to further probe the May 23 honeymoon killing. A three-member team headed by a deputy SP and also including two sub-inspectors has been in Indore since Tuesday to gather more evidence and record statements of more people to strengthen its probe into the Indore transporter Raja Raghuvanshis May 23 murder. Prior to this, police teams from the north-eastern state had arrested four men, including the murders mastermind Raj Kushwaha and his three henchmen Akash, Anand and Vishal, and taken them on transit remand from Indore to Meghalaya on June 10. Those four accused, besides Rajas widow Sonam Raghuvanshi (identified as the principal conspirator in the case), are currently being grilled by police in Meghalaya. According to informed sources, the SIT team from Meghalaya visited multiple spots in Indore on Tuesday and Wednesday including a rented flat in Dewas Naka area, where Sonam was in hiding between May 30 and June 7, a restaurant in Super Corridor area where the murder plot was allegedly hatched and the houses of Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam Raghuvanshis families. The cops from Meghalaya are also believed to have visited the offices and godown of Sonams family business in eastern Indore and gathered crucial evidence. The visiting Meghalaya police team has also questioned and recorded statements of key members of both Raja and Sonams families, including Rajas brothers and Sonams brother Govind. Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Ghazipur girl claims she travelled with accused Sonam in a bus to Gorakhpur Sonam's telephone calls: New angle in the case The visit by the police team from the northeastern state assumes significance after the Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang said on Monday that the investigators probing the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) were not treating the love triangle as the only motive, but are also looking into various other angles. We are investigating whether there is anything more to this case, the DGP had said. Amid the ongoing investigations, a novel development related to Sonams telephonic conversations over the last few months has come to the fore. As per informed sources, Sonam had talked over 100 times with someone on a mobile phone number registered in the name of Sanjay Verma. The conversations took place 100-120 times in less than a month in March-April. Though that telephone number is registered in Sanjay Vermas name, the possibility of the number being used by Raj Kushwaha to connect with Sonam cannot be ruled out, a source added. One of the initial clues which guided the SIT to Sonam and Raj was the long telephonic conversations between the two of them, particularly between May 15 and May 17. This latest telephonic conversation between Sonam and someone talking through a phone number registered in Sanjay Vermas name may well throw a new angle in the case. With the Meghalaya DGP maintaining that the probe is covering all possible angles, it also remains to be seen whether the investigators zero down upon the suspected hawala transactions linked to Sonams family business and use of benami accounts, particularly bank accounts held in her cousin Jitendra Raghuvanshis name, for major money transactions. Sonam and Raj along with three henchmen were arrested from MP and UP on June 8 and 9 in connection with Raja Raghuvanshis killing near a waterfall in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) on May 23, just 12 days after Sonam and Rajas marriage in Indore. The 29-year-old Rajas body was found in a gorge on June 2. Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Was money from benami account used to fund Raja Raghuvanshi's killers?
