After cough syrup tragedy, MP hospital recalls Azithromycin bottles over alleged worms

Amid growing concerns over child deaths linked to toxic cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh, a government hospital in Gwalior is facing a complaint over worms reportedly found in a bottle of antibiotic medicine given to a child, media reports said on Thursday. According to these reports, following a complaint by a woman whose child was administered the medicine, the entire stock of Azithromycin oral suspension at the government hospital in Morar town has been sealed, and samples have been sent to a laboratory in Bhopal for testing. Azithromycin is commonly prescribed to children for various infections. The medicine in question was reportedly a generic version manufactured by a Madhya Pradesh-based company. A drug inspector, Anubhuti Sharma, told media that a woman at the government hospital in Morar complained of worms in a bottle of Azithromycin oral suspension. Although the bottle brought in by the complainant was already opened, the matter was investigated immediately. All 306 bottles stored and distributed at the hospital have been recalled and seized, the reports added. Preliminary inspections of some bottles did not reveal signs of insects, but testing is being conducted to confirm safety. Some bottles have been sent to a laboratory in Bhopal, while a sample will also be sent to the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata. This incident comes after 24 children in Chhindwara district reportedly died due to suspected renal failure after consuming adulterated Coldrif cough syrup. The tragedy had earlier prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to issue an alert against three substandard oral cough syrups identified in IndiaColdrif, Respifresh TR, and ReLife.

Chhattisgarh wins best performing state award for transparent PM-JAY implementation

RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh was bestowed with an award as best performing state for its effective execution, transparency and almost zero pendency on health care insurance claims and related issues under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The award was received by Dr Priyanka Shukla, chief executive officer (CEO) of the state nodal agency at the National Health Authority (NHA) Conclave held in Bhopal on Wednesday. At the NHA review meeting in January 2025, Chhattisgarh was found to have a relatively high number of suspicious claims. To improve this situation, the state nodal agency developed and implemented a swift action plan to strengthen accountability and transparency in health services. The nodal agency has taken steady, resolute steps in recent months, including conducting extensive field audits to identify suspicious claims, significantly reducing the turnaround time (TAT) for claims processing, orientation and sensitivity training for all stakeholders, strengthening the State Anti-Fraud Unit (SAFU) team, and establishing regular communication and coordination mechanisms with empanelled healthcare providers (EHCPs). Besides intensive reviews at district and state level by the health secretary and CEO (state nodal officer), the health department team conducted surprise inspections of many hospitals across the state. Penalty action was taken against 45 hospitals (the highest ever) for non-compliance with the scheme's standards. Additionally, field audits were conducted in over 32,000 cases, preventing fraudulent claims and making the claim settlement process more transparent. Regular meetings are being held with representatives of the Indian Medical Association and private hospitals to address issues faced by empanelled hospitals. According to data from the National Health Authority, 97 percent of hospitals (the highest) registered under PM-JAY in Chhattisgarh are active, a testament to hospitals' confidence in the scheme. In contrast, this rate in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh is 62 %, and the national average is only 52 percent. BHOPAL : Three student leaders reportedly associated with the BJP's students wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were arrested in Mandsaur district of western Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday for secretly filming girl students while the girls were changing costumes in a room during the government colleges youth festival. On Wednesday, the local police station received a complaint from the principal of the Maharaja Yashwant Rao Holkar Government College, which alleged that CCTV footage at the college showed that the girl students were filmed secretly while changing costumes in the changing room, during preparations for an event of the ongoing youth festival at the college on Tuesday. The girl students reported the matter to us, after which the CCTV footage of the concerned floor revealed that four male students (all B.A. third-year students) were filming the girls from the ventilator of the changing room. Aiming to prevent the misuse of those visuals, which could have led to the girls resorting to extreme steps, the accused male students were identified and the police were informed about the matter, the government colleges principal, Dr. Priti Sharma, said. Ahead of Diwali, Madhya Pradesh approves proposals targeting soybean, millet farmers and pensioners

BHOPAL: Ahead of Diwali, the Madhya Pradesh government approved a series of proposals on Tuesday, targeting the soybean and millet farmers and pensioners in the state. Aiming to boost the interests of the soybean farmers in the state, which is considered the countrys soybean bowl, the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, approved the implementation of the Bhavantar Yojana, price deficit payment scheme of the central government. Under the special scheme for the Kharif season 2025, the soybean farmers will be compensated for the deficit between the current selling price being fetched by their produce in notified markets and the Rs 5328 per quintal minimum support price fixed for soybean. The scheme allows the government to compensate if farmers receive prices lower than the MSP, which is fixed at Rs 5,238 per quintal, after selling soybean in the notified markets. The government will pay the difference between the selling price and the MSP. The government has fixed the MSP for soybeans under this scheme at Rs 5,238, urban administration and development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya informed after the meeting. Under the special scheme, soybean will be sold in the states notified mandis from October 24, 2025, to January 15, 2026. The model rate will be calculated based on the weighted average of soybean prices over 14 days in state mandis. The difference between the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the market/model rate will be transferred via DBT to the registered farmers bank accounts. The decision was long-awaited, particularly in the state which accounts for almost 60 per cent of the country's soybean production, and has seen steep decline in soybean prices, due to excess supply and inclement weather. In another key decision, the state cabinet decided to procure kodo and kutki (millets) from farmers in major millet-producing districts for the first time, benefiting a large number of tribal farmers. Under the Rani Durgavati Shree-Ann Protsahan Yojana, procurement of Kodo and Kutki will be undertaken from farmers in the leading production districts Jabalpur, Katni, Mandla, Dindori, Chhindwara, Shahdol, Anuppur, Umaria, Rewa, Sidhi, and Singrauli. Based on demand, procurement from farmers of other districts will also be considered. Procurement will be carried out by Shree Ann Consortium of Farmer-Producer Company Limited (Shree Ann Federation). For Kharif season 2025, approximately 30,000 metric tons of milletKutki at Rs 3,500 per quintal and Kodo at Rs 2,500 per quintal will be procured. The Federation will receive an interest-free loan of Rs 80 crore from the States Price Stabilisation Fund. Additionally, an incentive of Rs 1,000 per quintal will be directly transferred (DBT) to the bank accounts of eligible farmers. Further, the cabinet also approved a proposal to increase the dearness relief (DR) payable to pensioners in the state and family pensioners by 2 per cent. Around 4.5 lakh pensioners will benefit from the decision. This increase will result in an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 170 crore on the state exchequer for the current financial year. The decision aligns with the communication from the Government of Chhattisgarh dated August 25, 2025.

Modi govt weakening RTI Act, says Congress as law turns 20

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunsi and KPCC working president P C Vishnunadh on Sunday accused the Narendra Modi-led Union government of systematically weakening the Right to Information (RTI) Act, as the historic law passed by the UPA government turned 20 this year. As per the duo, under the original 2005 framework, information commissioners had a fixed five-year tenure with secure service conditions, ensuring independence of central and state commissions. However, the 2019 amendment transferred appointment powers to the Union government, opening doors for administrative interference, they said. The 2023 Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act further expanded the definition of personal information, restricting disclosure even in matters of public interest, the Congress leaders said, adding that this undermined the essence of the RTI Act, with serious issues like voter list irregularities and misuse of public funds being shielded under the label of personal information. The duo said vacancies worsened the situation. The Central Information Commission, they said, has just two members instead of 11, and the Chief Information Commissioner post has been vacant since September. They said as of June last year, about 4.05 lakh appeals and complaints were pending across state commissions, with 23,000 cases awaiting resolution centrally. Requests for information on the PMs foreign visits, deaths due to alleged oxygen shortage during the pandemic and the PM CARES fund usage have reportedly been denied, they said. The leaders also highlighted the electoral bonds case, where RTI requests went unheeded initially, and only the Supreme Courts intervention led to details of the contributions made to political parties becoming public. The duo alleged that RTI activists face serious threats and attacks, citing the murders of environmentalist Shehla Masood in Bhopal for exposing illegal mining and land scam whistleblower Satish Shetty by the land mafia, and warned that such incidents deter citizens from using the RTI law without fear. They also said although the Whistleblower Protection Act was passed by the UPA, it was never implemented. In Kerala, information related to deaths in police custody is being withheld under the guise of personal data, one of the leaders said. The Congress demanded repeal of the 2019 amendments, the amendments made to the DPDP Act, full implementation of the Whistleblower Protection Act and diverse representation in commissions.

OBC youngster in MP forced to wash Brahmin mans feet as punishment for posting 'disrespectful' AI image

BHOPAL: Parshottam, a youngster belonging to the OBC category (Kushwah community), was allegedly dictated to wash the feet of a Brahmin man with water and drink it as atonement for a sin committed by him. The incident took place on Friday night in Madhya Pradeshs Damoh district. He was punished for posting an AI-generated image of a Brahmin man, Anju Pandey. A village-level dispute in Sataria snowballed into such cruelty. The village had imposed a self-declared ban on selling alcohol, but Anuj alias Anju Pandey violated that ban and continued to sell liquor. He was caught, and the villagers punished him by making him publicly apologise and pay a fine of Rs 2100, following a unanimous resolution. Anuj accepted it as well. However, the problem did not end there. On Friday, Parshottam allegedly created AI AI-generated image of Anju Pandey wearing a garland of shoes. Though Parshottam deleted the post within minutes and apologised for it, the Brahmin caste men considered it an insult to their entire caste. Parshottam was called to a Shiva Temple in the village, where he was forced by the Brahmin caste people to wash Anju Pandeys feet and drink it. The entire insulting act happened in the presence of Brahmin caste men as well as a few Kushwaha caste men. The entire act inside the temple premises was filmed. The video has gone viral, too. In the video, Parshottam is seen apologising to the entire Brahmin caste, kneeling before a Shiva Linga and placing Rs 5100 as a fine for his acts. Both Parshottam and Anju Pandey did not report the matter to the police and instead released separate videos stating that all that happened was part of a Guru-Shishya relationship, and a few people were trying to disturb the social harmony. However, a Kushwaha caste man, Shobha Prasad, reported the matter to the police on Saturday. Four men, including Anuj alias Anju Pandey, Kamlesh Pandey, Brajesh Pandey, Rahul Pandey and two to three unidentified men have been listed among the accused in the FIR, lodged at Patera police station under Sections 296, 196(1)(b) and 3(5) BNS and efforts are underway to arrest the accused, Damoh district police superintendent Shrutkirti Somwanshi said. The sections deal with the offences of obscene acts, acting prejudicial to social harmony and crime committed with common intent. According to Damoh district police sources, a case is likely to soon be lodged against Parshottam Kushwah for posting the AI-generated image of Anuj Pandey. The Kushwahas and Brahmins form a significant chunk of the vote bank in the Hatta and Patera area of the Damoh district. The incident exposed how caste-based oppression still prevails, particularly in the MP's Bundelkhand region.

Congress demands CBI probe into deaths of kids under 10 across Madhya Pradesh over last year

BHOPAL: While the special investigation team (SIT) of Madhya Pradesh Police probes the recent deaths of at least 23 kids due to cough syrup poisoning-induced acute kidney failure in Chhindwara and adjoining districts, the opposition Congress has demanded a separate SIT probe to probe deaths of kids aged below ten years across the state. Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari demanded the formation of a separate SIT for probing deaths of children aged below ten years, across MP, particularly in Chhindwara and neighbourhood over the last three months. He claimed that while more than 500 kids took ill, over 150 of them died in southern MP districts, including Chhindwara, Betul, Pandhurna, Seoni and adjoining districts over the last three months. Patwari, who is himself a former MP minister, further demanded a CBI probe into the deaths of kids below 10 years across MP over the last one year. This syrup (Coldrif) is sold not just in MP, but in many other states, so a CBI probe is required to establish why the death happened in MP only. That can only become clear, if the probe covers deaths of children aged below ten years in the last one year across the state. Questioning the arrest of Dr Pravin Soni (government doctor who prescribed the Coldrif cough syrup to most kids, who died later) in the case, the state Congress chief said, A doctor only prescribes the medicines, he doesnt manufacture and check the efficacy of the medicines. Though the owner of the pharma unit which manufactured the cough syrup, has already been arrested from Chennai, similar action needs to be taken against MPs then drug controller. Merely his removal from post wont suffice, he should be booked in the same case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and be arrested subsequently, Patwari demanded on Saturday. While announcing that the Congress workers will observe day long fast at all children's hospitals across the state demanding for justice for families who lost their kids in Chhindwara and neighbouring districts, Patwari further demanded the resignation of states health minister Rajendra Shukla (also the deputy CM) in the matter. If the health minister doesnt resign taking moral responsibility for the carelessness which caused the deaths of kids, then the CM should show the courage to sack him. He also demanded action against the states principal secretary (health) Sandeep Yadav and questioned as to who is Sonu Rana, who wields immense clout. Madhya Pradesh: Cops pocket Rs 1.5 crore from seized hawala cash, suspended

BHOPAL:Ten police personnel, including a woman Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP), have been suspended for allegedly misappropriating Rs 1.5 crore out of a total of Rs 2.96 crore in suspected hawala money in Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh. Nine police personnel including Arpit Bhairam, the Sub-Inspector and in-charge of Bandol Police Station, two head constables, and six constables were suspended on Thursday following an order by Inspector General (IG) of Jabalpur Range, Pramod Verma. Subsequently, on Friday, Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana ordered the suspension of SDOP Pooja Pandey. According to a complaint filed by Sohan Parmar, a resident of Nagpur, Maharashtra, he was traveling from Katni (MP) to Jalna (Maharashtra) with Rs 2.96 crore in cash, allegedly belonging to a bullion trader. The amount is suspected to be hawala money. On the night of October 89, a police search team led by SDOP Pooja Pandey and Bandol Police Station in-charge Arpit Bhairam intercepted the vehicle near Sheeladevi Bypass under the jurisdiction of Lakhanwada Police Station. Parmar was detained, and the cash was taken to Bandol Police Station, where he was held overnight. However, instead of following the due legal procedure for cash seizure, the police reportedly released the vehicle and Parmar the following morning without proper documentation or action. When the bullion trader from Maharashtra learned of the incident, he traveled to Seoni district and was shocked to discover that the official police report only acknowledged the seizure of Rs 1.45 crore with the remaining Rs 1.5 crore allegedly misappropriated by the involved officers. Surprisingly, senior police officials, including Seoni Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Mehta and IG Jabalpur Zone Pramod Verma, were not informed of the operation by the involved team. It was Additional SP (ASP) Deepak Mishra who alerted the SP and the IG, prompting an official inquiry. This led to the suspension of the nine personnel, including the police station in-charge. Based on the findings of the SP and IG, DGP Makwana subsequently ordered the suspension of SDOP Pooja Pandey, bringing the total number of suspended officers to ten. Additional SP (Jabalpur) Ayush Gupta has been appointed to lead the investigation. He arrived in Seoni late Thursday night and has already begun the probe. Commenting on the incident, Seoni SP Sunil Mehta said, Action has been taken against the police personnel for failing to properly seize and report approximately Rs 1.45 crore on the night of October 89.

Madhya Pradesh HC directs govt to relocate toxic ash from Union Carbide

BHOPAL: Unsatisfied with steps taken by the state government for containment of the residual ash generated from incineration of toxic waste of Union Carbide factory site, the Madhya Pradesh government has directed the government to relocate the ash to a place which is far away from human habitation, vegetation and water sources. A division bench of the HC, comprising Justices Atul Sreedharan and Pradeep Mittal directed the state government to file a report citing alternate sites for containment of the ash (instead of presently planned containment site which is just 500 meters from human habitation in Dhar district). The HC further asked the government to inform the court, whether a global tender has been floated to get the best technical expertise of companies/agencies, executing a work of this nature and having dealt with similar cases of containment of toxic chemical waste. Importantly, this is the second time in over two months that the MP HC has directed the state government to relocate the 899 tonnes of ash (generated from the 55-day incineration of the 358 tonnes of toxic waste at the treatment-storage-disposal facility in Pithampur-Dhar) to a site without human habitation. Before its Wednesday order, the HC had also issued similar directions on July 31 . Earlier also, this Court had voiced its apprehension of containing the residual waste proximate to human habitation, as the residual waste is still toxic in nature and if not contained properly, and God forbid, if the containment structure itself is breached collapses on account of a natural disaster like an earthquake, then it would be another disaster in the waiting. This Court had directed the state to examine alternate sites for containment of the toxic ash. In this regard, the State may examine the alternate sites given in one of the intervention applications and consider the feasibility of moving the toxic ash to such places which are far away from human habitation, vegetation and water source, so that even in the event of the containment collapsing, its ill effects are nil to minimal. While mentioning about another intervention application filed in the matter, the HC stated in its Wednesday order, The concerned application discloses that the tests that have been conducted on the toxic ash, still reveal the presence of mercury, which is higher than the permissible limits as disclosed in the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Boards Report of August 12, 2025. In support of the structure envisaged for the containment of the toxic ash, the state has made an animated video presentation to contend that the containment structure (barely 500 meters from human habitation) is a state-of-the-art structure employing most modern safety measures. However, it doesnt satisfy the court. In times when new roads are washed away in rains and bridges collapse and worse still, when railway overbridges are constructed with a right-angle turn, reducing this state to a laughingstock nationwide, reposing unflinching faith in the engineering prowess of the state may be an invitation to disaster. The anxiety of this court should not be misconstrued as mocking the state but far from it, the caution being exercised by the court is the result of being once bitten, twice shy. The Union Carbide India Limited factory at Bhopal was safe, till disaster struck in December 1984. Thus, when it comes to the issue of containing the toxic ash, perhaps till Kingdom Come, no amount of caution is in excess. The HC will next hear the matter on November 20. Importantly, the entire 358 tonnes of toxic waste lying at the worst industrial tragedy-struck defunct Union Carbide plant in Bhopal was relocate safely after 40 years on the HCs order on January 1-2, 2025 to the TSDF in Pithampur industrial town of western MPs Dhar district. Based on the HCs directions, the waste was incinerated at the same TSDF in 55 days in May-June, consequently generating 899 tonnes ash, which is planned to be safely disposed in secured landfill/containment structure, close to the TSDF where the waste was burnt.

MP CM Mohan Yadav accuses TN govt of inadequate support over cough syrup poisoning deaths of 23 kids

BHOPAL: As the death toll of children from cough syrup poisoning continued to rise in Madhya Pradesh, the states chief minister Dr Mohan Yadav has accused the Tamil Nadu government of not providing adequate support on the issue. According to official sources, the death toll of children at hospitals in Nagpur and Chhindwara stands presently at 23, including 20 from Chhindwara, one from Pandhurna and two from Betul district. In an associated development, Ranganathan, the 75-year-old owner of the Tamil Nadu based pharmaceutical unit, which made the cough syrup, was arrested by the MP Polices SIT team from Chennai on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday and will be brought to Chhindwara soon. The deaths have happened due to manufacturing defects of the concerned cough syrup, which was being made at the factory in TN. So, the timely action and sampling should first have been initiated there. The Congress leaders who are questioning us should better go to Tamil Nadu and question their alliance partners government in that state, as to how the licence of the factory was renewed. How was it operating in a small place, Yadav said after taking stock of the medical treatment of the affected kids in Nagpur in Maharashtra. Amid the possibility of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi going to Chhindwara on October 12 to meet the families who have lost their children, the MP CM dared the former AICC president to go to Tamil Nadu and question his partys alliance partner DMK's government on the issue. How was the drug licence issued to the unit, how come it was renewed, how was it allowed to function from a small place? Rahul Gandhi should go to TN and ask these questions to the state government there. Weve been affected by the defective cough syrup which was made in TN, why dont the Congress and Rahul Gandhi raise the issue with the Tamil Nadu government, Yadav said. Centre slams TNFDA for delaying Sresan Pharma licence cancellation after Coldrif cough syrup kills 20 children Yadav visited the hospitals in Nagpur where kids from Chhindwara, Betul and Pandhurna districts are under life-saving treatment following acute renal failure caused by poisoning of the Coldrif cough syrup manufactured at Sresan Pharmaceuticals in TNs Kancheepuram district. Weve already acted against our drug controller and inspectors for failing to perform random sampling of the syrups samples. Action has also been initiated against the doctor who particularly prescribed Coldrif cough syrup, which was sold through the medicine store run in his wifes name. Our police have arrested the owner of the drug manufacturing company in TN, were not going to spare anyone in the matter, the MP CM said. Meanwhile, in a briefing about the arrest of Ranganathan from Chennai, the Chhindwara district police superintendent Ajay Pandey said he was running the pharmaceutical unit as a proprietorship entity along with chemical analysts and other team members. As he is a blood pressure and sugar patient, were getting his thorough medical check-up done in TN, after which he will be produced before a local court there for bringing him on transit remand to Chhindwara. Pandey said, As the investigations progress, more accused will be added. They may be doctors who prescribed the same syrup (and it caused damage to childrens health) or vendors and retailers through whose distribution channels the syrup went to the kids. He said, Our 12-member SIT is probing the case and six members of the team are in Chennai currently to bring Ranganathan to Chhindwara. We are still in the initial stages of the probe. Based on the questioning of the pharmaceutical firm owner, it will be established from whom the hazardous chemical was sourced and more accused will be added. There was a strong possibility of Ranganathan fleeing from the country as his cellphones were switched off, but our team finally managed to nab him. The SP-Chhindwara said the autopsy of three kids has already been conducted, but the post mortem reports cannot be made public. We are working on getting more information with the help of the forensic science lab and experts, he added. Meanwhile, sources privy to the ongoing probe revealed that the TN based pharma making unit, which was first registered as a private limited firm in 1990, was later struck off from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs register, yet continued operating under a proprietary structure, raising serious questions about regulatory oversight. Six escape unhurt after private aircraft skids off runway in UP's Farrukhabad

LUCKNOW: A major accident was narrowly avoided on Thursday morning when a private aircraft, registered as VT-DEZ, skidded off the runway at Mohammadabad airstrip in Uttar Pradeshs Farrukhabad and stopped just short of the boundary wall. All six people on board, including four passengers and two pilots, had a narrow escape. The incident happened around 11.15 am when the aircraft, operated by Jetserve Aviation began its take-off roll. However, after covering about 400 metres on the runway, the plane veered off course and lost alignment, finally stopping just short of the perimeter wall. According to officials, the aircraft was a twin-engine charter plane with a 2+6 seating configuration and was scheduled to take off for Bhopal. Pilots Nasib Baman and Prateek Fernandes were at the controls at the time of the incident. The passengers onboard included Ajay Arora, Deputy Managing Director of Woodpecker Green Agri Nutripad Pvt Ltd, who had arrived with a team to assess the upcoming beer manufacturing unit in the Khimsepur industrial area. Sumit Sharma, from SBI, Rakesh Tikku, vice president (operations), and Manish Pandey, UP project head were also on board. Police and administrative officials, including SDM Sadar Rajnikant Pandey, CO Ajay Verma, and Mohammadabad police, rushed to the site soon after the incident. A fire brigade was also dispatched as a precautionary measure. Mohammadabad Kotwali SHO Vinod Shukla said preliminary findings suggest that low air pressure in one of the aircrafts wheels may have caused it to veer off the runway. He confirmed that all passengers were safe and later left the site by car. It was later confirmed that the group had arrived in Farrukhabad, on Wednesday, and was scheduled to return on Thursday morning when the incident occurred. A video seen on social media showed the aircraft lying on the ground with its wings and propeller clearly visible. The aircraft is considered to have sustained only minor damage, though its front section was visibly tilted towards the ground.

Centre slams TNFDA for delaying Sresan Pharma licence cancellation after Coldrif cough syrup kills 20 children

NEW DELHI/CHENNAI/BHOPAL: The Centre has pointed fingers at the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (TNFDA) for not yet cancelling the licence of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif cough syrup, linked to the deaths of at least 20 children in Madhya Pradesh. According to sources in the Union health ministry, the TNFDA was directed by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to cancel the licence of the pharma company based in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, on October 4. The TNFDA is yet to cancel the license of the company despite CDSCO recommendations, sources told TNIE . However, Tamil Nadu State Drug Control Department on Wednesday initiated criminal proceedings against G Ranganathan, proprietor cum manufacturing chemist of Sresan Pharmaceuticals. A special investigation team (SIT) from Madhya Pradesh arrived in Chennai and held discussions with the Tamil Nadu State Drug Controller. Ranganathan, who has been in the pharma manufacturing field for over 40 years, is absconding. The SIT lodged a police complaint against Ranganathan, sources said. Since Sresan is already shut, the departments show cause notice was pasted on the doors of the unit in Kanchipuram and on Ranganathans residence in Chennai. The notice gives Ranganathan time till October 12 to submit his response. Possibly on October 13, formal orders to cancel Sresans licence would be issued. Its current licence is valid till December this year, officials said. Company owner absconding with wife: MP police Convictions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 stipulate a minimum jail term of 10 years, which may extend up to life imprisonment and with a fine of not less than Rs 10 lakh, said S Gurubharathi, Deputy Director of Drugs Control and Licensing cum Controlling Authority, TN. Officials said the show cause blames the manufacturer of misbranding. For, the label of the container ought to have carried a warning that fixed dose combination shall not be used in children below four years of age. This is mandatory as per gazette notification dated 15 April 2025 of the Union health ministry and circular dated 18 December 2023 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. Failure to do so violates Section 18(a)(i) read with Section 17 (b) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to travel to Chhindwara district on October 11 or 12, where he will meet the bereaved families. Till now 20 children from Chhindwara, Pandhurna and Betul have died due to the unfortunate and painful incident. Five children are being treated in government and private hospitals in Nagpur and all efforts are underway to save their lives, MP deputy CM and health minister Rajendra Shukla said. Our SIT in coordination with the local police in TN, has conducted investigations and raids at multiple locations, but the companys owner has gone into hiding along with his wife. Were also investigating the role of the companys directors and other officials, who might be directly or indirectly associated with the adulteration of the syrup, a senior Chhindwara police officer told this newspaper. Cough syrup unit was to be shut after December Ranganathan, 75, has been running the Kanchi unit at its rented location (pic) since 2013. Vaishnaw also stressed the green benefits of railway expansion over road transport. Indian Railways, being an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly transport system, will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, he said. The projects are expected to cut Indias oil imports by 28 crore litres and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 139 crore kilogramsequivalent to planting around six crore trees. The capacity augmentation has been formulated under the PM Gati Shakti framework, which promotes integrated planning across ministries. The aim is to provide seamless movement of goods and people through coordinated infrastructure development. The approval is also seen as one of the most significant recent investments in Indian Railways network expansion strategy which is expected to play a critical role in achieving the countrys broader economic and sustainability goals.

Madhya Pradesh HC flags mobile phone 'intoxication' among police personnel

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has flagged to the state police department higher-ups about intoxication of mobile phones/social media among the police personnel and called for remedial measures. Hearing a writ petition recently, the HCs division bench (at its principal seat Jabalpur), comprising Justices Anand Pathak and Puspendra Yadav mentioned in its order, This Court craves the attention of senior officers of the police department about intoxication of mobile phones/social media among the uniform-clad departments, like the police. Nowadays it is commonly observed that guards on bungalow duties, court duties, law and order duties or duties inter alia where police personnel posted at a place where they have to do sedentary jobs, are involved in observing social media. This creates indiscipline, casualness in duties and at times incriminating social media clips, pollute the mind and affect the disposition of police personnel. This issue deserves the attention of senior police officers and remedial measures as well, the HC said in its six-page order recently. The HC recommended incorporation of sensitisation programs in police training centres for constables, sub-inspectors and other officers and a mechanism for the supervision of on-duty police personnel's social media presence. The HC further directed to send a copy of the Courts order to the states Director General of Police, state PHQ-Bhopal, ADG (Administration) and ADG (Training) of the state police for information and contemplation. The two-judges bench passed the order, while hearing a writ petition filed by a former police guard/constable against his compulsory retirement from service in 2007, on being caught sleeping under influence of alcohol during duty at the bungalow of a protectee in Gwalior district. The Court ruled that the decision to compulsorily retire the policeman was not disproportionate to the charge levelled against him and thus, rejected his appeal. The petitioner was the member of guard duty at the residence of a Protectee, therefore, he was required to be more vigilant for the purpose he was deputed and this intoxication may breed indiscipline and may cause accident/mishap at the hands of guard himself, who is meant to protect the person for whose security he is deputed as guard. Apart from the present departmental proceedings, earlier also the petitioner was punished for remaining absent on the duty. Thus, the conduct of petitioner also assumes importance as he appears to be habitual of dereliction of duty, the HC stated in its order.

Have to take PoK back: RSS chief talks oneness of India

BHOPAL: Addressing a gathering in eastern Madhya Pradeshs Satna district on the concluding day of his two-day visit to the BJP-ruled states Vindhya region, RSS Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday stressed the oneness of India as a nation. Many Sindhi brothers are sitting here. I am very happy that they did not go to Pakistan. They came to the undivided India. This should be passed on to the new generation, because we have one home. Circumstances may have sent us here from that home, but that home and this home are not separate, he said, further expressing, The whole of India is one home. But someone has usurped one room of our house, where we kept our table, chair and clothes. We have to take it back. Calling for unity, he emphasised, We are all one, all Sanatanis and Hindus. The British divided us by showing us a broken mirror. But we must now unite by seeing into a good mirror. If we look at a mirror with spiritual traditions, we will certainly appear in one. Speaking at the event marking the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Baba Mehar Shah Darbar building, the RSS chief emphasised, All languages in India are our national languages, and every citizen should know at least three languages. Even those who loudly say they are not Hindus, when they go abroad, the world sees them as either having originated from Hindus or terms them Hindu/Hindawi, Bhagwat maintained. Urging people not to abandon their rich religion and traditions, he said, Dont quit your religion to fulfil your desires. Instead, abandon your ego and recognise your own self. If we carry forward the self of the country, all our own self-interests will be fulfilled. He further stated that Within the confines of our homes, and if possible worldwide, if not worldwide, then within our own homes, we should pride and preserve our language, attire, hymns, buildings, travel and food, all of which are ours, as per our tradition. Amid growing controversy over languages in the country, the RSS chief noted, All Indian languages are our national languages. He offered a three-language mantra for every citizen. Every citizen should know at least three languagesthe home language (mother tongue), the state language, and a national language, he said.

MP reports two more likely child deaths from Coldrif syrup after 11 earlier fatalities

BETUL: Two children from Amla block in Madhya Pradesh's Betul district have died allegedly after taking Coldrif cough syrup, which has been banned now as tests showed presence of a toxic chemical called diethylene glycol, health officials said on Sunday. Amla Block Medical Officer Dr Ashok Narware identified the two children as Kabir (4) son of Kamlesh of Kalmeshwar village, and two-and-a-half-year-old Garmit, son of Nikhlesh of Jamun Bichhua village. They were taken to Parasia in neighbouring Chhindwara district for fever treatment where their condition worsened. It is yet to be confirmed whether the deaths were caused by the syrup. I have been directed to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report, Dr Narware said. Both children developed symptoms such as kidney issues and abdominal swelling and were referred from Betul to Bhopal for advanced care. No post-mortem was conducted but reports of severe kidney complications were sent to the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CM&HO), Dr Narware said. Incidentally, Amla is about 150 kilometres from Parasia sub division of Chhindwara where 11 kids have died after allegedly consuming toxic cough syrup. Family members alleged Kabir's death followed the consumption of the syrup prescribed by Parasia-based physician Dr Praveen Soni, who was arrested late Saturday night and suspended from service. As per Parasia police, Soni, despite being a government doctor, was practising at a private clinic and prescribed the syrup. Centre makes U-turn on cough syrup; Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, TN ban it As per Kabir's kin, he was first taken to Dr Soni on August 24 after he complained of fever, and then two doctors in Parasia were consulted when his condition did not improve and the duo indicated kidney complications. The boy was later taken to Nagpur and then to Bhopal, where he died on September 8, they added. Garmit died on October 1 in his village while under treatment, Dr Narware said, adding his family had also consulted Dr Soni earlier. Amla Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shailendra Badonia said the administration is gathering detailed information, while Betul Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Manoj Hurmade said he has sought a detailed report from the BMO. I can conclusively pinpoint the exact cause of the deaths only after I get the report from the BMO. An advisory has been issued directing all private medical stores and Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras to dispense medicines or syrups only against a registered doctor's prescription, Hurmade said. Sale of medicines without a doctor's advice has been prohibited and drug inspectors have been told to intensify checks and stop the sale of suspicious or unverified drugs, he added. The Tamil Nadu drug control authorities, in their report dated October 2, declared the Coldrif syrup sample (Batch No SR-13; Mfg: May 2025; Exp: April 2027) manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals, Kancheepuram, as adulterated because it contained diethylene glycol (48.6% w/v), a poisonous substance which may render the contents injurious to health. The Tamil Nadu government on Friday banned Coldrif. Following the TN report, the Madhya Pradesh Food and Drug Administration issued instructions to stop further sale and distribution of Coldrif and immediately seize any available stock for investigation under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. It also ordered that other products manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals be removed from sale pending testing. Tests samples of Coldrif cough syrup found to be 'adulterated': TN food safety dept

MP bans Coldrif cough syrup after nine children die of suspected kidney failure within a month

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday banned the sale of Coldrif syrup following the deaths of nine children due to suspected kidney infections in Chhindwara district since 7 September. The deaths of children in Chhindwara due to Coldrif syrup are extremely tragic. The sale of this syrup has been banned across Madhya Pradesh. A ban is also being imposed on other products manufactured by the same company, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated on X. The syrup was produced at a factory in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Following the incident, the Madhya Pradesh government requested the Tamil Nadu government to conduct an inquiry. The investigation report was received this morning, and strict action has been taken, Yadav said. In response to the tragedy, action has also been initiated at the local level. A team has been constituted at the state level to further investigate the matter. The Chief Minister added that those found guilty would not be spared. According to officials, nine children have died since 7 September due to suspected renal failure. At present, 13 children including eight from Chhindwara and Nagpur are undergoing treatment. Acute renal failure caused deaths of nine kids after suspected cough syrup poisoning in MP

BHOPAL: Children under five in Madhya Pradeshs Chhindwara district are continuing to die of acute kidney failure after being prescribed a combination of medicines, including two common cough syrups , by local doctors. With three more deaths over the last few days, the death toll has increased from six to nine , while at least three other kids under treatment at a hospital in neighbouring Nagpur (Maharashtra) are battling for life with dialysis and ventilator support. Since September 4, nine kids, including Shivam Rathore, Vidhi, Adnan, Usaid, Rishika, Hitansh, Chanchlesh, Vikas and Sandhya, have died. 13 other kids have been under treatment in hospitals in Chhindwara and Nagpur, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM-Parasia) Shubham Kumar Yadav said on Friday. Out of the five kids who were admitted at the Chhindwara District Hospital, one has been discharged after full recovery, while two others are on the path of recovery. The two remaining kids are still under intensive treatment. In Nagpur, out of the eight hospitalised kids, the condition of three kids remains highly critical, as they are currently on dialysis and ventilator support, the SDM said. He added that, according to biopsy reports of the children who died in Nagpur hospitals, Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), and not Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), appears to have caused their deaths. Detailed tests of water and other samples from the areas where the children lived, conducted by premier institutions including the National Institute of Virology (NIV-Pune), ruled out contaminated water, vector-borne diseases, or rats as causes of the health issues. Analysis of the childrens medical histories showed that the cough syrups were common across cases. Six children die in three weeks in Madhya Pradesh; cough syrup poisoning suspected A report from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2022, showed that some chemical toxicity of cough syrups manufactured in India had caused similar fatalities in Gambia. With a similar pattern emerging here also, an advisory was issued to restrain the use and prescription of the two concerned cough syrups in the entire Chhindwara district, Yadav maintained. Echoing similar concerns, Dr Pawan Nandurkar, the paediatrician at the Chhindwara District Hospital, said, The biopsy reports of the kids who died during treatment at hospitals in Nagpur, have revealed that there has been some toxin-mediated injury to the kidneys. Analysis of the medical history of patients (including the kids who died) reveals that in 80% cases, the cough syrup Coldrif was administered to the kids. Old pharmacological researches suggest the possibility of such a cough syrup with a chemical Diethylene Glycol (DEG) or Ethylene Glycol (EG),. Suspecting chemical contamination in the cough syrup and its possible link to kidney damage, causing the deaths, the district administration issued an advisory banning the use, sale, and prescription of such cold cough syrups. Doctors have been advised to avoid prescribing combination medicines, use injections cautiously due to potential kidney impact, and conduct kidney function tests immediately if any child shows signs of urinary problems. Approximately 15-16 kids were referred to hospitals in Nagpur over the last few days, out of which six died. Three to four are stated critical there, while a new patient has been sent there today, Dr Nandurkar said. Meanwhile, the states Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister, Dr Rajendra Shukla, who had recently stated that cough syrups were not linked to the childrens deaths, spoke to the media on the issue again on Friday. Samples of 12 medicines have been sent for testing, out of which reports of three medicines dont suggest anything in them which couldve caused the deaths of the kids. The reports of the remaining nine medicines will be with us by tonight, before which it cannot be concluded what actually caused the death. No banned syrup can be sold in the market, but sometimes some batches of any medicine could cause problems, but before the test reports dont come to us, nothing can be said. Meanwhile, as per reports from Chhindwara district, most of the kids (who died) were administered preliminary treatment in Parasia area (coal belt) of Chhindwara by a common medical practitioner, Ravindra Soni (a government doctor posted at Parasia Community Health Centre who also runs a private clinic). Soni doctor (Ravindra Soni) prescribed the medicines, including cough syrups, to our children and also administered injections to them. But instead of improving, their condition worsened, ultimately compelling us to rush them to Nagpur, where they died later, parents of deceased Adnan, Usaid and Vikas told journalists in Chhindwara on Friday.

Madhya Pradesh: Newborn buried alive by parents over job loss fears; rescued by villagers

BHOPAL: A government school teacher and his wife buried their newborn baby boy at Madhya Pradeshs Chhindwara district out of fear of losing his job due to the state government's two-child policy for employees. Miraculously, the 72-hour-old baby survived. Alert villagers, who were on a morning walk, heard the cries of the infant and rushed to the spot. They discovered the newborn buried beneath a heavy stone in a shallow grave. The baby was immediately rescued and rushed to Chhindwara District Hospital with grievous injuries, including insect and ant bites. He is currently under round-the-clock medical supervision. The infant's parents, Bablu Dandoliya (38), a government school teacher, and Rajkumari Dandoliya (30), have been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abandoning and attempting to murder their newborn child. According to officials at Dhanora police station, the couple already had three children two daughters aged 11 and 7, and a 4-year-old son. To avoid breaching the states two-child policy, they had previously managed to hide the birth of their third child from official records. On the morning of September 23, Rajkumari gave birth to their fourth child at home. Fearing that the childs existence would cost Bablu his government job, the couple allegedly took the newborn into a nearby forest during the early hours of September 26. There, they buried the infant alive and concealed the grave with stones. However, a group of villagers, out for a morning walk, heard faint cries coming from the forest. At first, we thought it was some animal. But as we got closer, we saw tiny hands pushing through the stones. It was horrifying. How can any parent even think of doing something so brutal? one villager recounted. Doctors treating the newborn at the district hospital described his survival as nothing short of a miracle. The baby has numerous ant and insect bites and shows signs of hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature). Thankfully, he is now stable and under continuous monitoring, said a hospital official. Dhanora police station in-charge Lakhanlal Ahirwar confirmed that during interrogation, the parents admitted to the act. They said they were certain Bablu would lose his job under the two-child policy if the fourth childs birth became known. This fear drove them to take such a horrifying step. According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Madhya Pradesh has recorded the highest number of cases involving the abandonment of newborns in the country.

Six children die in three weeks in Madhya Pradesh; cough syrup poisoning suspected

BHOPAL: Authorities in Madhya Pradeshs Chhindwara district have issued an advisory restricting the prescription, sale, and use of at least two cough syrups after six children, aged one to seven, reportedly died between September 4 and 26 from kidney-related complications and anuria. Analysis of the medicines administered to the six minors found two cough syrups in common. With samples of the syrups sent for detailed testing, the district administration has advised doctors to refrain from prescribing them and has restricted their sale and use. Till the time test reports of the syrup samples are out, an advisory has been issued to restrain the use, sale and prescription of those syrups. Doctors in the district have also been advised strictly to prescribe only symptom-specific medicines, like prescribing just Paracetamol for fever, instead of prescribing a wide spectrum of medicines, including those for cough and cold, Chhindwara district collector Sheelendra Singh told TNIE on Wednesday. The six children, aged between one and seven, from different parts of the Parasia area (also known as Koylanchal for its coal mining activity), initially suffered from cold and mild fever. Local doctors prescribed routine medications, including cough syrups. After taking the medicines, the children initially appeared to recover, but within days their symptoms returned, accompanied by a sharp decline in urine output. Most of the children who later died from kidney-related complications were admitted to private hospitals in nearby Nagpur, Maharashtra. The children only had mild fever and cold, but after the cough syrup was administered to them, their condition worsened, resulting in the stoppage of urine and associated complications, like swelling in the body, regular bouts of vomiting, ultimately resulting in deaths, one of the grieving parents said. Chhindwara district chief medical and health officer Naresh Gonare said, The blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of the minors who died in hospitals at Nagpur, were sent for virology tests. But the tests didnt reveal any vector-borne/viral ailment, like Japanese Encephalitis or Chandipura virus. Anuria (alarming decline in urine output caused by kidney malfunction) seemed to be the common problem in all six kids who died. Suspicion of toxicity and contamination in the cough syrups subsequently arose, prompting authorities to send samples to Bhopal for detailed analysis, official sources said. Unconfirmed reports indicate kidney biopsies of the deceased children revealed the presence of diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical often linked to pharmaceutical poisoning. Water samples from affected areas are also being sent to a national-level testing laboratory for analysis. Teams from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are in Chhindwara to investigate the deaths, which may be linked to contaminated cough syrups. Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) of the state health department are also conducting door-to-door screening and surveillance of residents for similar health problems. No new case has been reported in the last 24 hours from anywhere, the Chhindwara district collector said. The ICMR team has sent samples from the children and the medicines to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for further analysis.

Despite being flagged down at two separate traffic checkpoints, the bus failed to stop. Among the injured was a traffic police officer who was hurt while attempting to intercept the vehicle. Of the 15 injured, eight were discharged after receiving primary treatment at local facilities in Sihora. The remaining seven were referred to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur, where two individuals, including a woman, remain in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Both are being closely monitored by neurologists and surgeons due to head injuries. Additional Superintendent of Police (Jabalpur), Suryakant Sharma, who was at the scene, reported that angry local residents assaulted the driver in retaliation, leaving him injured as well. He is also receiving treatment at the medical college. The driver has been booked under Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempting to commit culpable homicide. Police sources noted a trend among local bus drivers of parking their vehicles near their homes between trips, rather than at the designated bus stand. In this instance, the practice appeared to contribute to the incident, with the intoxicated driver losing control and ploughing into the crowd.

Senior students forced juniors to plan protests after ragging punishment at Indore engineering college

BHOPAL: Senior students at the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) campus in Indore, conspired to trigger Nepal-like Gen Z protests on campus to avenge the punishment imposed on them for ragging a junior student last month. A detailed probe by the anti-ragging committee of the state-run institution has revealed that a group of senior students, punished for their involvement in ragging, orchestrated the entire plan and sought to enforce it through first-year students. According to the committees findings, the juniors were recently called to a restaurant near the institute, where the seniors instructed them to create fake email and social media (X) accounts and use these accounts to retweet messages posted by the seniors, thereby preparing the ground for the protests. The juniors were threatened with Batch Out if they failed to comply. The committee further reported that several second-, third-, and fourth-year students of the institute, around 30 to 40 in total, were present during the meeting with the juniors at the restaurant. As part of the destructive plot, the juniors were directed to damage CCTV cameras and remove the digital video recorder (DVR) from the hostel. A third-year student, Aman Patelwho was previously associated with the RSS-linked ABVP but later ousted by the student outfit for unruly actshas emerged as the prime conspirator of the entire plot. His younger brother, Anuj Patel, a first-year student staying in the hostel without authorisation, monitored the juniors to ensure compliance with the directives of Aman and other senior students. Following the investigation, the committee has recommended that the police lodge an FIR under the appropriate BNS sections against four students, including the two brothers, Aman and Anuj Patel, as well as Amans batchmates Adarsh Makwana and Aditya Sharma. The police will also be asked to help identify the other senior students present at the restaurant meeting, and similar action is likely to be initiated against them. The committee has also named several first-year students involved in damaging windows, CCTV cameras, and stealing the DVR from the hostel. According to DAVV vice-chancellor Dr Rakesh Singhai, Some senior students, after being found guilty of ragging a junior student last month, were awarded multiple punishments, including monetary fine, expulsion from the hostel, and debarment for one semester. Possibly miffed with that action, the same senior students called the juniors at a restaurant recently and rendered them necessary instructions. Subsequently, destruction of CCTV cameras and removal of the DVR happened at the hostel; it remains to be established who all students were involved in it. Further detailed probe is needed about the alleged planning by the students for protests. A meeting of the Proctorial Committee will be held later today in the matter, while a detailed complaint is also being sent to the local police, particularly for lodging a case about the damage to CCTV cameras and removal of DVR, Singhai added.

Pragya Singh Thakur calls for Muslim boycott

BHOPAL: Known for making provocative statements, former Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur has appealed to Hindu women and girls to stay away from Muslim men and to not allow any Muslim man to enter their houses even for repair works. This comes nearly two months after she was acquitted of criminal charges by a special court in Mumbai in the 2007 Malegaon blast case. The saffron clad ex-BJP lawmaker made a series of controversial remarks in Bhopal during a Durga Vahini (VHPs women wing) Navratri event on Sunday. There is no brother-sister bond in Miyas (Muslims). If they dont respect their own sisters, how can they respect you as their sister? Muslim men are looking to deceive and trap Hindu women and girls. Dont ever become sisters of Muslims, Thakur said while addressing the Durga Vahinis Shastra Pujan event. I appeal to the Matri Shakti (women) to take a vow not to allow Vidharmis in your home. Dont allow those men to enter your house for light fitting, repair of water taps, to drive your vehicles or any other work. All our women and girls should take a vow of not falling into the trap of Vidharmis, she said, adding, Also, take a pledge to rescue from their clutches our women and girls who have already been trapped. These small oaths will protect our women and girls from the Vidharmis. We will have to take another oath of not consuming edible products made by the Vidharmis. Further, we will have to create groups, which will identify shops operated by Vidharmis near our temples. Once such Vidharmis are selling prasad near our temples are caught, they should be thrashed and handed over to the law enforcement, Thakur said. Without naming the countrys first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, she rued that he became the first PM of the independent India. It is said that we gained Independence without a shield. We made that person a PM, who neither won votes nor the nations hearts, and he did no service to the country. We made a man who sent his clothes abroad to be washed, flattered the British and bowed before English women our PM.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when the minor, while playing outside his house, went to the nearby garba pandal and came in contact with an iron pipe near the entrance of the pandal. Suspected honour killing: Class XII girl shot dead, body found in MPs Kuwari river

BHOPAL: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 19-year-old Class XII student was allegedly shot dead inside her home and her body allegedly dumped in the Kuwari river in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district. Divya Sikarwar, who belonged to a caste Hindu Kshatriya family, was reportedly shot in the head at her home in Shiv Nagar on the night of September 24. According to reports she is believed to have had a friendship with a youth from a backward caste. Morena district police received a call on Saturday reporting the girls disappearance and possible killing. A team questioned Divyas parents, while her younger brother and sister, both minors, are reported missing. The parents repeatedly changed their statements, initially claiming she died after coming in contact with a ceiling fan and later suggesting suicide. Police subsequently took Divyas father, Bharat Sikarwar, to the Kuwari river near their native village under Bagchini police station, about 30 km from Morena city. He admitted transporting the body in a car, covering it with a plastic sheet, tying a stone to it, and dumping it in the river. The search operations started on Saturday evening but were halted due to darkness. They resumed on Sunday morning, and within a few hours the partially decomposed body was recovered, tied to a stone in the river, Morena district police superintendent Samir Saurabh told TNIE on Sunday. He added: As the body is partially decomposed, the autopsy will be conducted in Gwalior on Monday, and a detailed forensic opinion will be taken there. Our experts, who examined the body, strongly suspect the girl was shot at point-blank range. An inquest of unnatural death has been registered, and a murder case will be lodged based on autopsy findings. Sources familiar with the investigation said the case points to a possible honour killing, noting that the weapon remains untraced, the siblings are missing, and the parents have been inconsistent in their statements. Divyas relationship with a youth from a backward caste is being considered a possible motive. Honour killings over inter-caste relationships are not uncommon in MPs Gwalior-Chambal region, bordering Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh. In June 2025, Sirnam Singh was arrested for allegedly killing his Class XI granddaughter Malishkha in Morena over her inter-caste relationship. In January 2025, 20-year-old Tanu Gurjar was shot dead by her father and cousin brother in Gwalior after refusing an arranged marriage. In June 2023, a young girl and her partner were murdered by her father and their bodies dumped in the Chambal river in Morena.

CMs back-to-back Delhi visits spark buzz CM Mohan Yadavs back-to-back visits to Delhi this week have set tongues wagging in political circles. While senior state BJP leaders have maintained that the CMs tours are related to important development projects, political pundits in Bhopal are making their own guesses, spanning from something big about to happen to a rejig of the states council of ministers. Several others are linking it to possible announcements of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of independent corporations and boards which have been long overdue. What gave momentum to speculations was the BJP national joint general secy (organisation) Shiv Prakashs meeting with the CM in Bhopal. Alls not well between DCM & BJP MLA All doesnt seem to be well between Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla and first-time BJP MLA Siddharth Tiwari in Rewa district of Vindhya region. The issue has been making news, particularly since Shuklas pictures were found missing from posters of an event in Tiwaris constituency Teonthar, which was graced by CM Mohan Yadav. Importantly, Shukla gave the event a miss after welcoming the CM at the Rewa Airport, triggering speculation about all not being well between Shukla (most powerful BJP leader of Vindhya) and Tiwari, who is the grandson of Congress stalwart and ex-Vidhan Sabha Speaker Late Shrinivas Tiwari. MP minister Vijay Shah defends Kailash Vijayvargiya's controversial remark on Rahul, sister Priyanka Gandhi

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah has now come out in defence of his senior cabinet colleague Kailash Vijayvargiya over the latters controversial remark about the leader of the opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi kissing his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in public. Kunwar Vijay Shah is facing an FIR for his sister of terrorists remark on Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. His (Vijayvargiya) statements are correct, as in the Indian culture, no brother kisses his sister in public. Kissing ones sister in public is not our culture and not at all in line with our customs and traditions. For those who indulge in such acts, they should do it in their homes and not on the crossroads, Shah said in Khandwa district on Friday. Pointing towards fellow MLA Kanchan Tanve during his speech, Shah added, She is also my real sister, so would I kiss her in public? Indian culture and civilisation do not teach this. Opposition, Congress has been staging protests against the former national BJP general secretarys recent remarks about LoP Rahul Gandhi kissing his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in public. Protests against Vijayvargiya, demanding his sacking from the state cabinet, have been reported from Bhopal, Indore, Shivpuri and some other districts. Slamming Vijayvargiya for the controversial remarks, the state Congress chief Jitu Patwari has said that, due to his failure to become the states CM, Vijayvargiya, who is nearing 70 years of age, seems to have lost mental balance, which is why he made such remarks. He said Vijayvargiya's remarks demean the sacred brother-sister bond and is also an insult to all sisters during the ongoing Navratri festival. We appeal to the states CM Dr Mohan Yadav to get a good mental health specialist to examine and treat Vijayvargiya. If the government and BJP cant do it, then all Congress workers are ready to donate money for funding Vijayvargiyas mental treatment, Patwari said. On Thursday, while addressing an event to mark the birth anniversary of BJP ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya in the states Shajapur district, the MP urban development and housing minister Vijayvargiya, while speaking about western culture Vs Indian culture, had raised the issue of LoP (Rahul Gandhi) kissing his young sister in public. The current leader of the opposition kisses his young sister in full public view on the crossroads. This isnt our culture; its actually representative of foreign culture. It shows a lack of values, but its not his fault as he has grown up abroad, the former BJP national general secretary said. While referring to the LoP's past pictures/visuals where the latter is seen hugging and kissing his sister (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra), the minister said, We treasure our rich and ancient Indian culture, we dont even drink water in the village where our sisters have been married. Whenever my father went there, he carried with him a jug full of water. With his statements triggering a political row, Vijayvargiya clarified on Friday. I didnt question the sacredness of the relationship (brother-sister bond), I was only referring to western culture while addressing the event on Thursday, which marked the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, whose Ekatma Manav (integral humanism) philosophy was in line with the Indian culture. All relations, be it husband-wife, father-son, brother-sister, are sacred, but there is a Maryada (dignity) of every relationship. I alsokiss my sisters head out of love, but not at all at the crossroads. What I said was that everyone can embrace and kiss their sisters, but if such acts are done on the crossroads, its actually reflective of western culture as such acts arent acceptable in Indian culture.

While security, electrical equipment, and cleanliness in trains emerged as major concerns for rail travellers, there was a notable improvement in the crucial area of train punctuality. A detailed reply by the Railways to an RTI application filed by Madhya Pradesh-based RTI activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur revealed that over 61.05 lakh complaints related to trains and railway stations were received during the two-year period. The data shows that the maximum complaints concerning trains in 2023-24 and 2024-25 were related to security issues, whereas the highest number of complaints concerning railway stations were about unreserved ticketing. Row over Kailash Vijayvargiyas remark on Rahul Gandhi kissing his sister in public rages on in MP

BHOPAL: The controversy over Madhya Pradesh senior cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiyas remark about Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi kissing his younger sister on a public crossroads continues to draw political criticism, even after the former BJP national general secretary sought to clarify his comments on Friday. Vijayvargiya told reporters that he did not question the sacredness of the brother-sister bond, but was referring to what he described as Western cultural practices during an event marking Pandit Deendayal Upadhyayas birth anniversary in Shajapur district on Thursday. All relations, husband-wife, father-son, brother-sister, are sacred, but there is a Maryada (dignity) to every relationship. I also kiss my sisters head out of love, but not at a crossroads. My point was that public displays like these reflect Western culture, which is not acceptable in Indian tradition, he said. The remarks sparked a strong response from the state Congress chief Jitu Patwari, who accused Vijayvargiya of making statements that demean the brother-sister bond. Patwari said the comments were particularly objectionable as they came during Navratri, when Goddess Durga is being worshipped in households across the state. He also suggested that Vijayvargiya, now close to 70, appeared to be affected by his unfulfilled ambition to become Madhya Pradesh chief minister and advised him to consult a mental health specialist. Vijayvargiyas comments on Rahul Gandhi are the latest in a long line of controversial statements by the senior MP minister. In 2022, while addressing a public gathering in Indore, he drew criticism for remarks about womens clothing, saying he did not find girls in skimpy or short clothes attractive and emphasising that women should be treated as goddesses. Around the same time, amid protests over the Agnipath scheme, he stated that party offices would prioritise Agniveers for security duties. Vijayvargiya has also courted controversy over his statements while addressing a seminar in his home city Indore in 2020 in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, when he raised suspicions about Bangladeshi labourers working on his construction projects and highlighted heightened security concerns. In August 2024, he again made headlines when he warned of a potential civil war in the country 30 years from now, citing demographic changes and urging efforts to strengthen Hindu identity. Thursdays remarks, referencing past photographs of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hugging and kissing in public, were framed by Vijayvargiya as a critique of cultural propriety. The current Leader of the Opposition kisses his young sister in full public view on the crossroads. This is not our culture, it reflects foreign influence and a lack of values, he said, stressing the importance of preserving traditional Indian customs. Political observers note that Vijayvargiya has repeatedly generated headlines with statements on cultural norms, womens conduct, and security issues, often sparking debates on public morality and political rhetoric in Madhya Pradesh.
