185 displaced persons granted Indian citizenship under CAA in Gujarat
Beneficiaries from Pakistan receive citizenship certificates in Rajkot after years of waiting; Gujarat Minister calls it restoration of dignity and rights
Gujarat government grants citizenship to 185 Pakistani refugees, CAA push intensifies
AHMEDABAD: In a sharp push under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 185 Pakistan-displaced individuals were granted Indian citizenship in Gujarat on July 25. At a Rajkot event, MoS Harsh Sanghvi handed over certificates to refugees settled in Kutch, Morbi, and Rajkot, assuring them full government support and access to welfare schemes. In a deeply emotional ceremony held in Rajkot, Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghvi declared that 'a new life has begun' for 185 displaced persons from Pakistan as they were officially granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Only two granted citizenship via CAA in Assam The crowd erupted in chants of Bharat Mata Ki Jai as Sanghvi said, Keep smiling... from now on, you are citizens of India. Linking their plight to the religious persecution in Pakistan, Sanghvi did not mince words. He said, When you hear the stories of these people -- Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists -- you cannot hold back tears. A few lost their husbands, others lost their homes to flames. And yet they endured. I salute their strength. He contrasted Indias pluralism with Pakistans oppression, saying, India is a land where every religion is respected. If the world truly wants to witness human rights in action, they must look at India, especially Gujarat. He also raised a sharp question: Why is there no global outrage over the atrocities on minority Hindus in Pakistan? Amid emotional moments, newly naturalised citizens shared their stories of pain, resilience, and pride. Bhavanaben Maheshwari, originally from Pakistan and now living in Rajkot, said, I faced a lot of hardships there. But today, after years of struggle, I proudly call myself an Indian. Another recipient, Champa Khambhala from Morbi, echoed the sentiment: Life in India is far better than in Pakistan, where Hindus cant even celebrate festivals freely. With her voice trembling, she added, Many of my family members are still stuck in Pakistan. I hope they, too, get the chance to unite with us in India someday. The ceremony wasnt just about documents it marked a loud and clear message about Indias stance on human dignity, national belonging, and justice for persecuted minorities. AHMEDABAD: Food for VVIPs, not students? A move by Gujarats Rajkot district, Jasdans administration allegedly sparked outrage on Thursday, as 48 schoolteachers were ordered to serve food at a temple fair instead of teaching students, this in a state already grappling with a massive teacher shortage. Under fire, the controversial order was swiftly scrapped, but not before exposing the deep cracks in Gujarats education priorities. In a decision that stunned Gujarats education community, 48 schoolteachers from Jasdan taluka were allegedly ordered to serve food to VVIPs during the upcoming Shravan month festival at the Ghela Somnath temple in Rajkot district. The order, issued by the Deputy Collector of Jasdan, quickly triggered political and public uproar and was ultimately revoked. The circular, directed at primary teachers from over 10 local schools, assigned them to manage food arrangements during the religious fair. This controversial duty raised a flurry of questions, especially as Gujarat is already battling an alarming shortage of 12,500 teachers and 700 principals across the state. Teachers, already burdened with roles beyond classrooms such as handling census duties, election work, and even bizarre tasks like chasing locusts or counting toilets, were now allegedly being pushed into hospitality roles. The move drew sharp criticism from educators and politicians alike, who warned that such diversions were corroding the states education system. Following the backlash, Jasdan's provincial officer withdrew the circular, stating that teachers may still choose to volunteer at the temple fair but not under compulsion. Education Minister Kuber Dindor admitted the error, clarifying that the Education Department had instructed local authorities to scrap the directive. He maintained that teachers should only be assigned essential national duties like elections or voter list revisionsnot temple hospitality. Minister of State for Education Praful Panseria called the circular completely inappropriate, stressing that educators must focus on shaping students futures, not serving dignitaries. He assured that any future non-academic responsibilities assigned to teachers would require clearance from the Principal Secretary of the Education Department to prevent further dilution of their core duty. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi lashed out at the government, calling it a repeated insult to educators. He pointed out how teachers in Gujarat have been roped into more than 30 non-teaching roles over the years, from crowd mobilisation for political events to pest control, adding that such misuse was pushing education into continuous degradation. Statistical data only amplified the alarm. Gujarat reportedly has 4,600 secondary (Std. 910) and 3,800 higher secondary schools. Yet, since the government took over teacher recruitment in 2011, no major improvement has followed, leaving classrooms short of 7,000 secondary and 5,500 higher secondary teachers, along with 700 principals. While the circular has been officially withdrawn, the controversy has reignited the larger debate around how teachers are routinely pulled away from their primary role, teaching, at the cost of the students they are meant to educate.
Gilbert Jessops 123-Year-Old Record Under Threat from Jamie Smith
This England-India series has witnessed the phenomenal rise of Jamie Smith as a batsman. His performances have sparked discussions about playing him purely as a specialist batter and relieving him of wicketkeeping duties so he can focus entirely on his batting. His scores in the series so far 40, 44*, 184*, 88, and 51 are the kind any top-order batter would be proud of. On Day Three of the second Test at Edgbaston, Smith was at his best. The 24-year-old smashed an unbeaten 184 the highest score by an England wicketkeeper in Test history. So dominant was his innings that he even took 23 runs off a single over bowled by Prasidh Krishna. He reached his century in just 80 balls, continuing the legacy of England's fastest centurion, Gilbert Jessop. At one stage during the knock, it even seemed like Smith might finally eclipse Jessops long-standing record. Jessops legendary effort came in the 1902 Oval Test against Australia, where, with England at 48/5, he blazed 104 out of 139 in just 75 minutes. The widely accepted record for that innings is a century off 76 balls a benchmark that has stood unchallenged for over 120 years, despite the modern era of T20s and Bazball. Among wicketkeepers, only Australia's Adam Gilchrist is ahead of Smith when it comes to the speed of a Test hundred. Smiths 100 off 80 balls is now the fastest by an Englishman against India in Tests, surpassing Ben Ducketts 88-ball century at Rajkot in February 2024. Fastest Test Hundreds by England Cricketers 76 balls Gilbert Jessop vs Australia, The Oval, 1902 74 balls Jonny Bairstow vs New Zealand, Trent Bridge, 2022 77 balls Harry Brook vs Pakistan, Rawalpindi, 2022 80 balls Ben Stokes vs New Zealand, Lords, 2015 80 balls Jamie Smith vs India, Edgbaston, 2025 Smith may not have broken Jessops record just yet, but the reality is that Jessops record may not be as rigid as it seems. InChasing Jessop, a book by Simon Wilde, the century-long record is critically re-examined. According to Wildes research, Jessop may have been even faster than previously believed a revelation that makes it even harder for modern batters to better it. While no one is deliberately chasing Jessops record, his name inevitably comes up whenever an English batter starts scoring rapidly in a Test. Since that fateful Oval Test in 1902, England have played over 1,000 Tests, yet the record endures despite the best efforts of Bairstow, Brook, and now Smith. Meanwhile, globally, the record for the fastest Test hundred in terms of balls faced belongs to Brendon McCullum, who reached his ton in just 54 balls for New Zealand in 2016. According to historical records, Jessop's century came from 76 balls. But Wilde's research an audit of the match scorecard and analysis from contemporary newspapers suggests otherwise. At the time, the number of balls faced wasnt officially recorded. A day after the match, a reporters ball-by-ball account detailed Jessops innings, forming the basis of the current 76-ball claim. However, Wilde discovered another analysis inThe Morning Leader, which indicated Jessop reached his hundred in just 71 balls. Further investigations across multiple newspapers helped him reconstruct the innings, concluding that the actual number of balls faced could have been between 72 and 74 possibly even faster than whats been acknowledged for over a century. Jessop may eventually lose his statistical record, but he will always be remembered as one of the most remarkable hitters cricket has seen. Among his 53 centuries, five exceeded 200 runs each achieved in astonishingly short timeframes: 286 out of 335in 175 minutes for Gloucestershire vs Sussex, Brighton, 1903 240 out of 337in 200 minutes for Gloucestershire vs Sussex, Bristol, 1907 234 out of 346in 155 minutes for Gloucestershire vs Somerset, Bristol, 1905 233 out of 318in 150 minutes for England XI vs Yorkshire, Lords, 1901 206 out of 317in 150 minutes for Gloucestershire vs Nottinghamshire, Trent Bridge, 1904 Jessop played 18 Tests between 1899 and 1909. Upon his passing in 1955, the legendary Sir Jack Hobbs paid tribute, saying: Also Read: LIVE Cricket Score He was undoubtedly the most consistently fast scorer I have seen. He was a big hitter, too, and it was difficult to bowl a ball from which he could not score. He made me glad that I was not a bowler. Gilbert Jessop certainly drew the crowds, even more than Bradman, I should say.

Gujarats crumbling bridges: How many more deaths will it take?
AHMEDABAD: Yet another bridge collapse in Gujarat has jolted the state, exposing deep-rooted negligence and crumbling infrastructure. The 40 year-old Gambhira Bridge in Vadodara district fell apart early Wednesday, dragging multiple vehicles into the Mahisagar River. While the government rushes to give reassurances, a haunting question persistshow many tragedies will it take before accountability replaces apathy? Gambhira Bridge Collapse: 9 Dead, 9 Rescued The Gambhira Bridge, connecting Central Gujarat to Saurashtra via Padra taluka in Vadodara district, collapsed early Wednesday morning in Mujpur Nazir. The bridge, known to be in a dilapidated condition for years, finally gave way dragging down two trucks, a pickup van, an auto-rickshaw, and an Eco car into the swollen Mahisagar River. Rescue teams pulled out nine bodies, while nine others were rescued alive. The bridge had shown warning signs of structural decay, yet no action was taken to shut it down or carry out urgent repairs. Public Fury Grows: Who Will Be Held Responsible? The tragedy has sparked public outrage. Citizens are questioning why the bridge was not closed despite its poor condition. Why are officials always reactive instead of proactive? Time and again, bridges across Gujarat have collapsed, and yet, the cycle of negligence, empty promises, and lack of accountability continues. Assurances after each disaster have failed to turn into meaningful reforms or penalties for those responsible. ASI initiates process to release enhanced compensation for 100 acres of land acquired at Dholavira
NEW DELHI: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has apparently started the process to release enhanced compensation for 100 acres of land acquired at Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gujarat. ASI Director General (D-G) YS Rawat told this newspaper that the payout would be given as decided by the court. The proposal has been put up for formal approval. Due to a few administrative issues, it was delayed. However, the delay was not intentional. The process is going on. Compensation fixed by the court would be given. On our request, we were granted some relief. We are trying our best, he said. As the survey failed to pay up the cost fixed by the district court Bhachau in Kachchh, the order for the attachment of its Rajkot Circle office was issued. On June 11, a five-member team of the court had reached the Rajkot circle to attach its office. However, following the intervention of D-G, 15-day time was granted to the agency to address the issue. The deadline ended on June 25. According to the sources, the court team visited the site on Monday to check whether a decision had been taken with regard to the matter. The court officials left without any action as they had just come to inquire about the decision. They left, without any action, to seek instructions from the court, sources said. In 2004, the ASI acquired around 100 acres of land at the prominent Harappan sites, where the ASI has its circle office. Following the acquisition order, the compensation was paid at the rate of Rs 0.65 paisa per square metre (sqm). Subsequently, nine landowners moved the district court in Bhachau Kachchh seeking higher compensation, which was granted in 2023. The higher rate of compensation allowed by the court was Rs 9.57 per sqm. As the ASI neither challenged the order nor paid the compensation, the land owners went to court again for early payment. As the payment was not made, the court issued an attachment order, arguably for the first time in the history of the Survey, on May 3. Later, the local ASI office wrote to the concerned special land acquisition of the district to seek his opinion to challenge the order, but received no reply. While the matter was under consideration at higher levels and with the Ministry of Culture, the ASIs Rajkot Circle sought 25 days from the court, effectively halting the attachment proceedings. Earlier, sources said that the Integrated Finance Division (IFD) had already rejected the request for higher compensation because of the steep hike, and asked the ASI to take a legal opinion and fix responsibility for not challenging the order.

ASI to decide on higher compensation for Dholavira land as court's 15-day deadline ends
NEW DELHI: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is optimistic about resolving a land attachment issue at Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gujarat, after a court ordered the attachment of its Rajkot Circle sub-office. ASI Director General YS Rawat intervened and the agency was granted a 15-day time to address the matter. While the issue remains unresolved, officials said a decision is expected to be made before the June 25 deadline. The case pertains to the acquisition of around 100 acres of land in 2004 at the prominent Harappan sites, where the ASI has its circle office. Following the acquisition order, the compensation was paid at the rate of Rs 0.65 paisa per square metre (sqm). Subsequently, nine land owners moved the district court Bhachau in Kachchh seeking higher compensation, which was granted in 2023. While the matter was under consideration at higher levels and with the Ministry of Culture, the ASIs Rajkot Circle sought 25 days time from the court, effectively halting the attachment proceedings. The matter is still under consideration. Decisions will be taken well in time, said Joint Director General (monument) and spokesperson of ASI Nandini Bhattacharya Sahu. Meanwhile, sources said that the Integrated Finance Division (IFD) had already rejected the request of higher compensation because of the steep hike, and asked the ASI to take legal opinion and also fix responsibility for not challenging the order. As the ASI didnt act, the court officials visited the circle office on June 10 but left after speaking with the D-G over phone, granting 15 more days for release of compensation.

Ahmedabad Air India plane crash: Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani feared to be among passengers
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is feared to have been among the passengers on board the Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. YouTube-trained thief behind Rs 60.83 lakh Diamond heist caught
AHMEDABAD: A meticulously planned diamond heist worth Rs 60.83 lakh sent shockwaves through Rajkots gem industry in April but after a 45-day cat-and-mouse chase, police have finally nabbed the mastermind behind the theft. In a case that reads like a modern crime thriller, the thief guided by tips from jail inmates and tricks learned on YouTube pulled off the audacious burglary using a magnetic drill machine sourced from Mumbai. The theft took place on the night of 10 April 2025, when the accused broke into a diamond factory on Rajkots Kotharia Ring Road. Gaining entry through a rear door, he cracked open the heavy-duty safe and disappeared without leaving behind any obvious trace. Chaos erupted the following morning as senior police officials rushed to the scene. Ten teams were formed, and over 100 CCTV cameras in and around the vicinity were scanned yet none captured the thief. Investigators believe he carefully avoided detection by walking along a central road divider to steer clear of surveillance cameras. With no digital or physical trail, the Crime Branch widened its net, reaching out to diamond traders across Saurashtra and South Gujarat. In parallel, officers began interrogating known criminals linked to diamond thefts. A breakthrough came when an inmate at Rajkot jail revealed that fellow prisoner Ajay Nayaka had previously enquired about committing a perfect heist without being caught on CCTV. Further investigation uncovered Nayakas unconventional methods. While in prison, he had received advice from fellow inmates and studied burglary techniques on YouTube. He was specifically told to use a magnetic drill machine a high-powered tool capable of piercing reinforced safes. Nayaka travelled to Mumbai to procure the device, returning to Rajkot to carry out the plan with surgical precision. A repeat offender with several previous cases, Nayaka was difficult to trace. He had no mobile phone, no family contact, and no fixed residence. However, surveillance on his known associates in Surat and Valsad eventually led investigators to Umerpada, where he was hiding. As police closed in, Nayaka made a desperate attempt to escape by leaping from a second-floor building, injuring his hand. He was arrested and brought back to Rajkot for questioning. During interrogation, he admitted to conducting multiple recces of the factory. He had even camped atop a neighbouring shed to study entry and exit points. After two failed attempts, he succeeded on his third try on 10 April. Post-heist, he lay low for over an hour, hiding in a pit near the scene. He then made his way on foot to City Road, travelled to Surat and Valsad in search of buyers, but failed to secure a favourable deal. Eventually, Nayaka returned to Rajkot, where he buried the stolen diamonds in a pit near an abandoned factory. On 29 May, police recovered diamonds and other valuables worth Rs 61.09 lakh based on his confession. Ajay Nayaka has now been charged under Sections 305(A), 331(4) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), marking the closure of one of Rajkots most calculated diamond thefts to date.
Gujarats Asiatic lion count leaps from 674 to 891 in five years
AHMEDABAD: In a major conservation milestone, Gujarats Asiatic lion population has soared to 891 a sharp 32.2% jump (from 674) since 2020, with 217 new lions added in just five years. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced the surge on Wednesday, unveiling results from the 16th Asiatic Lion Census conducted earlier this month. The latest figures signal a resounding success for Gujarats wildlife conservation efforts, reaffirming the states position as the last natural habitat of the endangered species. PM Modi praised the effort of Gujarat government. The big cats, once largely confined to Gir National Park, are now sprawling across 11 districts of the Saurashtra region including non-forested and coastal zones, a testament to their expanding territory and rising numbers. The number of lions in the state has gradually increased not just because of favorable geography and climate, but due to our government's consistent and careful approach to wildlife conservation, said the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Providing a detailed account, he noted, There were 327 lions in 2001, 359 in 2005, 411 in 2010, 523 in 2015, and 674 in 2020. Today, the lion population stands at 891. He further credited the shift in census methodology to Prime Minister Narendra Modis leadership, saying, As Chief Minister, Shri Narendrabhai Modi introduced the 'Total Count by Direct Sighting at Block System' method, replacing the traditional estimation model. Prime Minister praised the effort. Very exciting information! It's truly gratifying to see that the efforts under 'Project Lion' are creating a favorable environment and ensuring the protection of lions in Gujarat, the Prime Minister posted on social media platform X. The 2020 census had pegged the number at 674, all within Gir and surrounding areas. The latest count reveals not just a population boom but also a major geographical shift: 507 lions were spotted outside Girs boundaries, while 384 remain within the traditional sanctuary limits, according to Jaipal Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. The lion stronghold now includes protected areas like Pania, Mitiyala, Girnar, and Barda sanctuaries. Notably, 17 lions were recorded in Barda, just 15 km from Porbandar, while Bhavnagar district reported the largest single pride 17 lions in one group. The demographic breakdown, provided by the Gujarat Forest Department, estimates 196 males, 330 females, 140 sub-adults, and 225 cubs, painting a robust picture of the species health and future. This extensive wildlife mapping was the result of a meticulous four-day census conducted from May 10 to 13 across 58 talukas, covering 35,000 sq km. The operation, carried out in two phases, involved over 3,000 volunteers including forest officials, enumerators, and inspectors. For the first time, officials deployed a refined method known as direct beat verification, praised for its near-zero margin of error and 100% accuracy, made possible by hi-tech tools like camera traps, high-resolution imaging, GPS tracking, and radio collars. The lion census, conducted every five years, documented key data like time of sighting, direction of movement, physical identifiers, and precise GPS coordinates. The 11 districts where lions were sighted are: Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Morbi, Surendranagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Amreli, Porbandar, and Botad. This dramatic expansion of habitat and population underscores both the resilience of the Asiatic lion and the rigorous conservation efforts undertaken by the Gujarat Forest Department a rare ecological triumph in the modern era. Explained: Operation Sindoor aftermath and how it has impacted flights in India
Following Operation Sindoor and heightened security concerns, India's air travel sector has been hit. The closure of 30 airports across several states has left hundreds of flights cancelled and thousands of travellers stranded or scrambling for alternatives. Here's a breakdown of the current situation. What triggered the disruption? The disruption stems from the closure of operations at several civilian airports many of which double as military airfields after India conducted precision strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in the wee hours of May 7. Operation Sindoor: Nine strikes, 25 minutes of chaos for Pakistan Fearing potential retaliation post these strikes, the Indian government suspended operations at critical airports in the North, Northwest, and Central regions of the country. Which airports are affected? The closure impacts airports in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and the Delhi NCR region. Notable airports shut down include: J&K & Ladakh : Leh, Thoise, Srinagar, Jammu Punjab : Amritsar, Pathankot, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Halwara, Chandigarh. Himachal Pradesh : Dharamshala, Shimla, Bhuntar, Gaggal Rajasthan : Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Kishangarh, Bikaner Gujarat : Bhuj, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Mundra, Kandla, Keshod Others : Hindon (Delhi NCR), Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) Airlines expect the disruption to last at least until 5:29 AM on May 10, though airport sources hint it may continue longer. How are airlines responding? Major airlines have rolled out large-scale cancellations and advisories: IndiGo has suspended 165 daily flights, including those from Amritsar, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Gwalior, Jammu, Jodhpur, Leh, and Srinagar. Air India has cancelled flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot. SpiceJet has stopped operations in Leh, Srinagar, Jammu, Dharamshala, Kandla, and Amritsar. Akasa Air has cancelled flights from Srinagar. Passengers holding tickets for these routes have been offered full refunds. Impact on flyers Travellers are experiencing severe stress due to abrupt cancellations, particularly those with connecting flights. Entire itineraries are being disrupted when the primary leg of the journey is cancelled, as seen in multiple cases. R Sushmita, travelling from Himachal to Nagpur via Chandigarh and Delhi, had to reroute by train to Delhi due to a cancelled Air India flight. Fortunately, Air India issued a fresh ticket at no extra cost. Piyush Sawarkar, stuck in Leh with his family, tweeted for help after his Indigo flight to Mumbai was cancelled. Like many others, he received a standard airline response requesting his PNR via direct message. Social media platforms of airlines have been flooded with similar distress calls, and many passengers are still awaiting clarity and rebooking options. A necessary safety measure According to Captain CS Randhawa, President of the Federation of Indian Pilots Association, while the inconvenience is considerable, the move was necessary from a national security perspective. The government wants flyers to stay safe. Closure of air force bases wont impact the public directly since civilian aircraft dont usually operate there, he said. However, international carriers are significantly affected. To avoid Pakistani airspace, flights from the Gulf to Delhi are forced to take detours. For instance, British Airways, Air France, and KLM from Delhi are heading towards Mumbai and then rerouting through Turkey, with longer flight paths and additional operational costs, he explained. Whats next? The situation remains fluid. Airlines and airport authorities are monitoring developments, but flyers should be prepared for ongoing disruptions beyond May 10. Travellers are advised to stay updated through official airline channels and plan alternate routes where possible.

AHMEDABAD: Blowing the lid off a decades-old illegal stay racket, Rajkot police on Saturday arrested three Pakistanis and six more Bangladeshis living unlawfully in the district. Investigations revealed that the Pakistanis had crossed into India over 25 years ago and overstayed their visas. They remained under the radar until the Rajkot Rural LCB team swooped in and nabbed them. They are now under intense interrogation to unearth deeper links. Rajkot Range IG Ashok Kumar Yadav told The New Indian Express , In line with the state governments directives, we, along with the Rajkot district police, Rural SOG, and LCB teams, initiated extensive investigations across the region. Acting on a specific tip-off, the Rajkot Rural LCB team focused on Lodhika taluka, where Pakistani nationals were suspected of living unlawfully. Sweeping into the area, police discovered a family without any valid Indian documents no election card, no Aadhaar, nothing to prove legal residency. Intense questioning soon revealed their true identity: Pakistani citizens who had crossed into Rajkot over two decades ago and never returned. As the shocking details surfaced, the police detained the family. The three Pakistani nationals arrested from Rajkot have been identified as Rizwanaben Munafbhai Tatariya, 50, her son Zeeshan Munafbhai Tatariya, 29, and her other minor son. During interrogation, Rizwanaben confessed that she was born in Karachi in 1975 and married Munafbhai in 1992. Munafbhai slipped into India in 1994, and five years later, in 1999, Rizwanaben and their son Zeeshan followed on a joint Pakistani passport but when the time came to return, they chose to vanish into Rajkots Lodhika taluka instead. The family's roots deepened when Zeeshan, despite being a Pakistani national, married an Indian woman in 2021, further complicating the legal tangle. Their union led to the birth of a son in 2022, who is now two years old. Expanding their crackdown, Rajkot police also carried out raids across areas like Bhagwatipara, Morbi Road, Ramnathpara and Jungleshwar, where six more illegal residents were unmasked as Bangladeshi nationals. With these arrests, the number of Bangladeshis held in Rajkot has now surged to 21, widening the scope of the investigation. The detained Bangladeshis are currently under intense questioning. Authorities have made it clear that once their foreign citizenship is formally confirmed through interrogation, swift action will follow to deport them back to Bangladesh.

Gujarat teacher booked under POCSO Act; school denies allegations
AHMEDABAD: A disturbing case has surfaced in the city where a four-year-old girl has allegedly suffered internal injuries to her private parts, prompting her mother to file a police complaint against a teacher at Karnavati International School in the Railnagar area. The Pradyumnanagar Police have registered a case under sections pertaining to causing harm, the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, and the Atrocities Act. The complaint, filed by the childs mother, accuses a teacher identified as Mittalben of inflicting internal injuries on the child using a pen or some other object. The teacher has denied the allegations, and the school management has also dismissed the claims, citing CCTV footage that reportedly shows no evidence of misconduct. According to the police, the incident allegedly took place on April 11. The child returned home from school and complained of pain in her private parts. Her mother initially assumed the discomfort was due to heat and did not take further action. However, the following day, the child again complained of severe pain, at which point her mother noticed a sticky discharge and suspected something unusual. The childs parents took her to a nearby private hospital, where doctors raised concerns about possible sexual abuse. During questioning, the child was shown photographs of teachers, students, and staff and reportedly pointed to the accused teacher. She was later shifted to the Rajkot Civil Hospital and then to Janana Hospital for continued treatment. A medico-legal case was subsequently filed, triggering a formal investigation. Police have begun collecting statements and evidence. In the meantime, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest at the school on April 19, demanding the immediate arrest of the teacher and action against the school. Police detained three NSUI workers to prevent the situation from escalating. School director Ashok Pambhare has defended the institution, stating that they have complete CCTV footage of the child's presence on the school premises on April 11. If the parents are genuine, the management will cooperate. But based on the footage, there is no indication of any such incident, he said. The incident has caused significant outrage in Rajkots education circles, with the police continuing their probe to establish the truth.
Letter from anonymous 'BJP and RSS worker' attacks Gujarat MLA, alleges corruption
AHMEDABAD: A viral anonymous letter bomb alleging corruption against the MLA of Upleta in Rajkot has once again ignited controversy in BJP politics. This entire incident appears to be a vivid example of internal groupism and dissatisfaction within the BJP. The allegations made in the viral letter against Mahendra Padalia include claims of collecting money from contractors, taking bribes from government officials, corruption in the municipality, and even accusations that his associate is involved in adultery. MLA Padalia has dismissed the letter as an act of jealousy and malice, and has requested the district police chief to take action. His statement makes it clear that although the source of the letter remains unknown, there is a dissatisfied faction within the party attempting to raise their voice secretly. Padalia has released a video stating that similar anonymous letters with accusations went viral during the municipality period as well. False allegations have been made against me, and I have submitted a representation to the SP with a copy of the letter requesting action against the person who made it viral, he said. The question that arises in the wake of the anonymous letter is whether these are merely weapons of political revenge or if there is some truth hidden in them. This letter containing serious allegations against Dhoraji-Upleta MLA and former Vice-Chancellor of Saurashtra University, Dr. Mahendra Padalia, is reportedly being sent to many people by post. According to the allegations in the letter, BJP MLA Padalia collects Rs 2,000 - 3,000 from contractors, and also allegedly takes bribes from officials including PGVCL engineers and the Mamlatdar. Additionally, serious accusations claim that significant corruption occurred in the municipality during the administrator's rule, and that one of his close associates is involved in adultery. The letter ends with From: BJP and RSS worker and claims that copies have been sent to the BJP leadership in Delhi and Gujarat state.

Gujarat shuts 54 government primary schools across 33 districts as student numbers plunge
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government informed the Assembly on February 25, 2025, that 54 government primary schools across 33 districts had been shut down in the past two years due to plummeting student enrollment. The disclosure, made by Primary, Secondary, and Adult Education Minister, came in response to a question by Congress MLA Kirit Patel (Patan), exposing a deepening education crisis in the state. Schools Vanishing Across Districts Devbhoomi Dwarka led the shutdowns with nine closures, followed by Aravalli (7), Amreli (6), and Porbandar (6)each grappling with a sharp decline in student numbers. Junagadh recorded four closures, while Chhota Udepur, Kutch, and Rajkot saw three schools shut down each, signaling the widespread impact. Kheda, Jamnagar, and Navsari followed with two closures per district, further tightening the noose on struggling institutions. The crisis didnt spare Bhavnagar, Dang, Gir Somnath, Mahesana, Panchmahal, Surat, and Surendranagar, each losing one primary school, underscoring a grim picture of shrinking educational access. Single-Classroom Schools and Crumbling Infrastructure Beyond school closures, infrastructure woes continue to haunt Gujarats education system. In February 2024, the government admitted in the Assembly that 341 primary schools were operating with just one room, responding to a query from Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar. Justifying the appalling conditions, officials blamed low student and teacher numbers, arguing that fewer classrooms were necessary. However, the situation is exacerbated by the demolition of dilapidated rooms, with authorities citing a lack of available land as the reason new classrooms cannot be built, leaving students crammed into single-room facilities with no solution in sight. 1,606 Schools Run with Just One Teacher In another shocking disclosure on February 12, 2024, the Gujarat government admitted in the Assembly that 1,606 of the state's 32,000 government primary schools were running with only one teacher handling all students from Classes 1 to 8. The staggering figure highlights a severe staffing crisis in Gujarats education system, where thousands of students struggle for basic instruction in understaffed schools. Playgrounds Vanishing, Holistic Development at Risk The infrastructure crisis doesnt stop at classrooms. The government further revealed that 5,012 government primary schools across Gujarat lack a playground, depriving students of crucial recreational space. The situation in secondary and higher secondary schools is equally alarming, with 78 government, 315 grant-in-aid, and 255 private institutions operating without playgrounds, despite Gujarat housing around 12,700 such schools. Even private institutions are not spared, as 37 grant-in-aid and 509 private primary schools also lack on-campus playgrounds, highlighting a systemic neglect of student development. With shrinking school infrastructure, collapsing student enrollment, and teacher shortages, Gujarats education sector is facing one of its most severe crises in recent history.
