Asian Games: We are well prepared,' says India's kabaddi captain Sunil Kumar

Digital Desk | New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) Indian mens kabaddi team captain Sunil Kumar believes the side is well prepared for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, with an extended training programme helping the players build combinations, work on tactics and strengthen their individual skills ahead of the continental showpiece. The 27-year-old right defender, who was part of Indias gold-medal-winning campaign at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022, will lead a squad that combines experienced players with emerging talent. The current 12-member squad includes four members of the Hangzhou gold-medal-winning side: Sunil, Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar and Pawan Sehrawat. The team also features established Pro Kabaddi League players such as Ashu Malik, Jaideep Dahiya, Devank Dalal and Rahul Sethpal, while Ayan Lohchab represents the younger generation. Sunil said the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the kabaddi federation started the teams camp six to eight months in advance, allowing the players sufficient time to work on their combinations and strategy. The preparation has been very good because our federation and SAI started our camp six to eight months ago. We have planned the team combination and strategy well, Sunil told SAI Media. We first practised at SAI Bengaluru, then went to Bellary for training, and now our camp is at SAI Gandhinagar. The extended preparation has also helped the players understand their respective roles and develop greater clarity about the teams tactical approach. India will enter the Asian Games looking to build on its strong record in kabaddi. The mens team won gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, with Sunil, Arjun, Aslam and Pawan part of that campaign. Our senior players gave the team a different identity and brought so many gold medals for India. We want to maintain that legacy, add another gold medal to Indias tally and follow the path that our legends have created, Sunil said. The captain also stressed the importance of a collective effort, with India possessing strength in both raiding and defence. You cannot win just by one persons effort. This time, our raiding and defence departments are both quite strong. To a large extent, we have the top players in kabaddi in our team, whether you look at the raiders or the defenders, he said. We have done all the preparation. We have worked on our strategy, team combination, fitness and individual skills. Now we have to execute all of that properly when the competition comes. The effort of one player will not be enough. Everyone has to contribute. Our raiders, defenders and all-rounders have to work together as one team, he added. The kabaddi competition will be held at the Tokai Citizen Gymnasium in Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture, with Indias campaign beginning on September 21 and the finals scheduled for September 26.

'No good can come from digging past': Ex-Babri Masjid litigant on Swara Bhaskar's Ram Janmabhoomi remark

Digital Desk | Ayodhya, Sep 18 (IANS) Reacting to actress Swara Bhaskar's controversial statement on the Ram temple case verdict, former Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi litigant Iqbal Ansari said on Friday that the court judgment on the Ram temple was announced by the Supreme Court, and people across the country respected the decision given by the apex court. He also added that there were no communal disharmony anywhere in the country following the verdict. Ansari said, The Ram Temple verdict was a court decision, and people across the country respected it. Not even a leaf was disturbed anywhere in the country. He added that digging the past can do no good to the country. Speaking to IANS, Ansari said that speaking on the matter should be avoided because the court judgment has already come. If anyone says anything regarding the Ram Temple verdict, it should be avoided, because people across the country had respected the decision of the court, he added. The decision has come, Ram Mandir has been built, prayers and rituals have been completed, people flock to the temple with complete devotion. Swara Bhaskar should avoid speaking on the matter, because all the people of the country have accepted the verdict respectfully, Ansari said. The former Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi litigant said, When all the people are coming and worshipping the deity, when there is no bias or discrimination Raising an issue of the past can bring no good, because we are residents of Ayodhya. We want Hindus and Muslims of the region to live in peace together with communal harmony. Lord Ram was born there. Hindus should be able to worship the deity. According to reports, actor Swara Bhaskar courted controversy after she said in a recent interview that the 2019 Supreme Court verdict on Ram Janmabhoomi gave her a lot of pain and that she was really upset about it because she felt it was very unfair. Adding that she personally texted all the Muslim people in her contact list and sought their forgiveness. She added that she even messaged major stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. She went on to say in the interview that she felt ashamed and that she did not agree to the Supreme Court's verdict.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer are back in the England squad, but Tuchel says nothing's guaranteed yet

Alexander-Arnold is an England international again, on paper at least, after fifteen months out of the picture. Thomas Tuchel named his squad for this month's Nations League fixtures with both Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer back in, the two most notable absences from England's World Cup run this summer, and the two names every conversation about this squad was always going to start with. Eight changes separate this squad from the one that took England to a third-place finish at the World Cup in North America this summer. Phil Foden and Jordan Henderson are among those dropping out. Newcastle's Lewis Hall, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha are among those coming in alongside the two headline returns. None of the other changes were the story today, though. Those were always going to be Alexander-Arnold and Palmer. Why they were both left out in the first place Neither absence was really controversial at the time, even if both were talked about constantly. Alexander-Arnold hadn't played for England since June 2025, a run that stretched back well before the World Cup squad was even picked, while he adjusted to life at Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool. Palmer's omission came down to fitness and form together: a groin injury disrupted his season just as Chelsea slumped to a tenth-place Premier League finish, and Tuchel opted for other options rather than gamble on a player who wasn't fully right. What's changed is simple enough. Palmer has started this season with four goals and two assists in his first six games under Xabi Alonso, numbers that make his omission from the summer look considerably more debatable in hindsight than it did at the time. Alexander-Arnold has settled into two different positions at Real Madrid and made his case with a strong start to the season in Spain, enough that Tuchel felt there was no longer a reason to leave him out of the conversation. Tuchel's own message: this is a chance, not a return Asked directly about both recalls, Tuchel was careful not to frame either as a settled decision. Cole has his numbers back, he said, before adding, of Alexander-Arnold specifically, that he was never non-selectable. The distinction matters. Tuchel is treating both recalls as an opportunity to compete for a place rather than a return to guaranteed selection, particularly for Alexander-Arnold, who Tuchel confirmed will report to camp as a right-back in a position where competition remains genuinely fierce. England open their Nations League campaign against reigning European and world champions Spain at Wembley on 26 September, before matches against the Czech Republic and Croatia follow in the same window. For two players who spent the World Cup watching from home, the message from their own manager is blunt enough: getting picked again isn't the hard part. Staying picked is.

Bigg Boss 20: Amrapali Dubey questions makers over alleged TV bias; asks, Baaki genres ke logon ko leke kyun aate ho?

Bigg Boss 20 has been witnessing discussions among contestants about screen time, visibility and representation inside the house. Amid the ongoing conversation, actress Amrapali Dubey questioned whether the makers of the reality show are more inclined towards television personalities despite bringing contestants from different entertainment backgrounds. During a recent conversation, Amrapali raised the issue of contestant representation and questioned why people from other genres are brought into the show if the makers are primarily interested in featuring television actors. She said, Toh aap aise bas kyun bula rahe ho? bol do na, TV waale log ka hi karna hai sabko. Itna hi TV-friendly hai toh TV ke hi logon ko leke aao, baaki genres ke logon ko leke kyun aate ho? Aasif Khan weighs in on contestant visibility Aasif Khan also joined the conversation and spoke about the audience's response to the housemates. He suggested that viewers are already supporting the contestants who are getting visibility and questioned the need for additional efforts to highlight those who may not be appearing as much. Aasif said, Hamare saath hi karna hai. Audience jab bada support kar rahi hai. Jo log nahi dikh rahe hain, unko dikhane ke liye Bigg Boss ko apni poori power lagani pad rahi hai. Jahan lagani hai, Bigg Boss ko sar se lekar idhar tak. Poori power lagani padegi, kyunki hum mein se toh saare dikh rahe hai, kisi ko bhi nahi bola gaya ki tum log nahi dikh rahe ho. Mehnat kar rahe hain, entertain kar rahe hain, hasa rahe hain, rula rahe hain public ko. The conversation comes amid a broader discussion inside the Bigg Boss 20 house about how contestants from different entertainment industries are represented on the reality show. Amrapali's comments specifically questioned the perceived preference for television personalities, while Aasif focused on the audience response to the contestants who are receiving screen time. Bhumi has previously walked several Indian fashion runways, and her appearance at New York Fashion Week marked a new addition to her fashion journey. For Nazranaas latest collection, she wore the Belur Math Lehenga, a design that draws inspiration from the architecture and philosophy of the Shri Ramakrishna Temple. According to the designer, the temple reflects the idea of universal faith by bringing together architectural influences associated with Hindu temples, mosques and churches. The same concept has been incorporated into the lehenga, which combines traditional Indian detailing with a contemporary runway presentation. The flared red velvet skirt featured intricate silver embroidery, shimmering embellishments and floral and traditional motifs across the silhouette. At the centre of the skirt was a swan motif, which holds particular significance in the design. According to the designer, the swan represents the Paramatman, or Supreme Self, and is featured at the heart of the emblem designed by Swami Vivekananda. Bhumi paired the skirt with a matching fitted blouse featuring a sweetheart neckline and delicate straps. She opted for a contemporary interpretation of the dupatta, styling the sheer red fabric in a cape-like drape around her arms, with the material trailing behind her as she walked the runway. Her makeup featured a luminous base, defined eyes, rosy cheeks and glossy lips, while her hair was styled in middle-parted braids. With its traditional inspiration and contemporary styling, Bhumis NYFW appearance brought together elements of Indian design and runway fashion as she closed Nazranaas SS27 presentation. Bigg Boss 20: Mahhi Vij, Mary Kom lock horns after Love Gill provokes boxer over ration task, watch promo!

Bigg Boss 20 has begun, but the drama inside the house is already picking up pace. With groups taking shape and rivalries emerging among the contestants, Mahhi Vij and MC Mary Kom have now found themselves at the centre of an increasingly heated equation. A recently released promo hints at another confrontation between the two, this time over a task involving the house ration. The tension between Mahhi and Mary Kom began amid Mahhi's ongoing feud with Yung DSA. During the captaincy task, Mahhi chose not to support Yung despite their previously cordial equation. She explained her decision by pointing out that Yung had already served as the house captain and that other contestants should also get a fair opportunity to compete for the position. While Yung was disappointed by Mahhi's decision, the situation escalated after Mary Kom allegedly presented a different version of Mahhi's conversation to the other housemates. Mary also claimed that Mahhi had abused Yung, which further added to the tension between the contestants. Mahhi Vij struggles to name Mary Kom in ration task The latest promo takes the rivalry a step further. In the upcoming episode, Bigg Boss calls Mahhi Vij, Uditi Singh and Aashif Khan into the 2X room and gives them an opportunity to win 75 per cent of the house ration. However, the contestants are given a condition. To secure the ration, they must reduce or remove the 'Jeevandan' lifeline of one contestant. As the trio discusses the decision, Mahhi appears to struggle while taking Mary Kom's name. She is seen asking Uditi for the boxer's name while deciding whose lifeline should be affected. The moment appears to set the stage for another confrontation. Later in the promo, Love Gill is seen approaching Mary Kom and talking to her about the decision made during the task. His conversation with Mary seemingly provokes her, eventually leading to a verbal altercation between Mary and Mahhi. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JioHotstar Reality (@jiohotstarreality) The exchange adds another layer to the growing rivalry between the two contestants, who have already found themselves on opposite sides of multiple disagreements inside the house. Viewers take sides in Mahhi-Mary Kom clash Since the beginning of Bigg Boss 20, some viewers have also discussed Mary Kom's personality and her comments inside the house. In an earlier episode, while speaking to fellow contestants, Mary referred to herself as a legend and suggested that nobody could be better than her. The latest promo has once again triggered a discussion around her attitude among viewers. Several users in the comments section appeared to support Mahhi and praised her for standing up for herself during the confrontation. At the same time, some viewers criticised Mary Kom over what they perceived as an overly assertive attitude and a tendency to look down on other contestants. The reactions remain divided, but the promo suggests that the Mahhi Vij and Mary Kom rivalry is far from over. With the house dynamics changing rapidly, their equation could become one of the talking points of the ongoing season. Asian Games: North Korea's national anthem played before South Korea's hockey match, complaint lodged

Digital Desk | Nagoya, Sep 18 (IANS) In a bizarre mix-up, the national anthem of North Korea was played before the hockey match of South Korea's men's team against Bangladesh at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday. The incident left the South Korean players baffled, with some players running their hands through their hair over the mishap ahead of their game at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Gifu, which remains nearly 30 kilometres from Nagoya. The organisers corrected the mistake and played South Korea's anthem after playing Bangladesh's national anthem. According to Yonhap, the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee stated that it lodged an official complaint with the organising committee over the anthem mix-up, demanding an official apology and prevention of a recurrence. It added that the match was delayed and the referee ordered players to shake hands and get ready to play even before the anthem ended. Korea defeated Bangladesh 5-0 in the pool game with Sim Jae-won, Lee Gang-san, Oh Se-yong, Bae Soung-min and Yang Ji-hun scoring one goal each. The 2023 Asiad bronze winners made light work of Bangladesh but were not taking their opponents lightly. We saw Bangladesh as a dark horse. We wanted to lock things down defensively in the first quarter, South Korea head coach Min Tae-seok said as quoted by Yonhap. And then we wanted to be more aggressive in the second quarter. And our players scored those goals after making their adjustments to the venue. Min also spoke on the anthem mishap. I can't believe something like this happened at an international competition, Min said. South Korea and Bangladesh are placed in Pool A along with four other teams, which also include defending gold medallists India, hosts and 2023 silver winners Japan, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Meanwhile, South Korea women also won their opener against Chinese Taipei 3-1 in Pool A later.

'Can become Prime Minister of Pakistan or Italy': Shehzad Poonawalla's swipe at Rahul Gandhi

Digital Desk | New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) Political analyst and former BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday took a swipe at the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, saying that he can become the Prime Minister of Pakistan or of any of those countries where he goes on vacations. Speaking exclusively to IANS, Poonawalla said: Rahul Gandhi can become the Prime Minister but perhaps of Pakistan. If he prefers, of Italy, or whichever country he frequently visits, like Bangkokif he wishes to take citizenship there, he could become Prime Minister of that country, since he spends most of his time abroad anyway. In India, he only visits briefly between his vacations. He (Rahul Gandhi) could certainly become Prime Minister of those countries, but here, in 2029, Narendra Modi will be re-elected India's Prime Minister with an even bigger margin. In 2034, if he decides to contest, he will become Prime Minister then as well. In 2027, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will return with an even greater margin than the BJP received in 2017 Assembly polls, he asserted. He expressed optimism that under BJP President Nitin Nabin's leadership, the party will form governments in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, even in Punjab and emerge victorious in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. The former BJP leader added: PM Modi will become the country's Prime Minister for the fourth time. Those who are unable to digest this fact can keep crying. Shehzad Poonawalla also shed light on his decision to resign from the BJP, saying that he had been considering a transition to the private sector after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Poonawalla added that he had always intended to return to the private sector after the 2024 elections, but decided to continue working with the BJP for some more time due to the political situation following the polls. After the 2024 elections, it was in my mind to transition to the private sector. The reason behind this was that when I joined politics in 2021 and became the national spokesperson of the BJP, I had previously been in the media. Before that, I drew a regular salary, he said.

Pakistani naval ship's conduct unacceptable and unprofessional: MEA

Digital Desk | New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) India on Friday rejected Pakistan's allegations over the collision between the Indian Navy's INS Kolkata and Pakistani naval ship Hunain in the western Arabian Sea on September 15, terming them as usual prevarication. Addressing a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Pakistani naval ship Hunain's conduct was unacceptable and unprofessional , which caused the collision. However, INS Kolkata did not suffer any damage. We have seen the Pakistan's response to the protest we have lodged. It is the usual prevarication that we expected. We reject the allegations and insinuations contained therein. Let me reiterate the facts of the matter for you. INS Kolkata was on a routine deployment in the Western Arabian Sea when Pakistani naval ship Hunain conducted itself in an unacceptable and unprofessional manner at sea that resulted in a collision, Jaiswal told reporters. The dangerous overtaking maneuver by PNS Hunain was in gross violation of Article 10 of the Agreement Between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Maneuvers and Troop Movements of 1991, which clearly specifies that naval units at sea are not to be within three nautical miles of each other. In addition, the Pakistani ship also infringed the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. The Pakistani side has once again been advised about the need for all military units to observe due care and respect the provisions of the relevant agreements between the two sides in order to prevent any repeat of such incidents. The incident did not cause any major damage to INS Kolkata and she remains at sea, he added. MEA's response came after Pakistan had accused an Indian naval ship of carrying out a provocative manoeuvre that resulted in a collision with the Pakistan Navy Ship in the Arabian Sea. On Wednesday, India summoned the Charge d'Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission and lodged a strong protest after the Pakistani naval ship's action at sea. The Charge d'Affaires of the High Commission for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in New Delhi was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs today and a strong protest was lodged with him over the unacceptable and unprofessional conduct of Pakistani naval units at sea that led to a collision with a unit of the Indian Navy, the MEA said. The MEA stated that the incident, which took place in international waters, did not cause any major damage, but the Pakistani naval ship's conduct was in direct contravention of Article 10 of the Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements of April 1991. The Charge d'Affaires of Pakistan was advised to convey to the concerned Pakistani authorities the need for all military units to observe due care and respect the provisions of the relevant agreements between the two sides in order to prevent any repeat of such incidents, the MEA mentioned in a statement. The Charge d'Affaires of India in Islamabad has also been instructed to lodge a similar protest with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, it added.
