Dia Mirza opens up about anxiety; says, I didnt have the vocabulary to define it
Dia Mirza has built a multifaceted identity over the years, balancing her work in films with her roles as a producer, writer and social activist. While she has managed these different aspects of her life, the actress has also experienced her share of challenges. In a recent conversation, Dia opened up about dealing with pressure and anxiety and explained how recognising what she was going through helped her work towards becoming a better version of herself. Talking about the pressure she experienced, Dia said, It was an inability to deal with pressure. And I dont think most of us are equipped to deal with that kind of pressure. Many of us break, and we dont even know we are breaking. How many of us live with anxietyhow many of us know our relationships are so hard because we are living with constant anxiety, and that comes from being in a system that is not fueling purpose and is not giving you the space to be. For Dia, taking a step back from the constant pressure and noise allowed her to find greater balance and focus. Reflecting on that phase, she said, From the moment that I stepped back, I am actually doing much more now than Ive ever done in my life before. I became a film producer at 26; I wrote articles; I worked on the ground with multiple NGOs. I have such a full-body, textured, nuanced existence that I thrive in. And its all self-created. No one told me to do these things. I do them because they give me joy, and they deepen my purpose. And yes, I was anxious; I didnt have the vocabulary to define it at the time. Dia also acknowledged that anxiety remains a part of her life even today. Speaking about her current experiences, she said, I get anxious even now. I work in climate and gender parity. I feel all levels of anxiety practically daily, while adding that she has become better at recognising those feelings and working through them. The actress believes that understanding her own emotions and physical responses has also helped her in her personal life. I think I am a better mother because Im able to recognise whats happening with my body, she said. For Dia, identifying anxiety and learning how to navigate it has been an important part of finding a more grounded way of living. Rather than allowing pressure to define her, she has focused on creating a life driven by purpose and activities that bring her joy. On the professional front, Dia has recently been seen in projects including Ikka and Operation Safed Sagar. As she approaches 25 years in the film industry, the actress continues to explore varied roles and projects, with audiences looking forward to seeing more of her work. As anticipation builds around Tumbbad 2, actor-producer Sohum Shah has revisited one of the most recognisable locations from the original film. Shah recently shared pictures from the iconic wada where the 2018 horror film was shot, taking fans back to the setting that played a key role in the story. In the pictures, Sohum Shah can be seen sitting on the stairs near the front door of the wada. The location holds particular significance for the Tumbbad franchise, as several important events from the first film unfolded there. The wada was also central to the mythology established in Tumbbad, with the Goddesss womb and Hastar forming an important part of the story. The original film concluded at the same location, making its return especially relevant as the makers work on the sequel. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sohum Shah (@shah_sohum) Interestingly, during a recent recce of the wada, the Tumbbad 2 team reportedly discovered the original aate ki gudiya moulds used for the first film. According to the information shared by the makers, the moulds had remained at the location since the original shoot and were found untouched years later. The discovery comes as the team continues to develop the next chapter of the franchise. Released in 2018, Tumbbad starred Sohum Shah and gained a cult following for its folklore-inspired narrative, distinctive visual world and atmospheric horror. The film received renewed attention after its theatrical re-release in 2024, when it reached a wider audience and performed strongly at the box office. The sequel has also expanded its cast. Nawazuddin Siddiqui joined Tumbbad 2, while Alia Bhatt has come on board in a pivotal role. The casting announcements were made by Sohum Shah in July, bringing Shah, Bhatt and Siddiqui together for the next instalment of the franchise. Tumbbad 2 is being spearheaded by Sohum Shah under his banner Sohum Shah Films in collaboration with Pen Studios, headed by producer Dr. Jayantilal Gada. Adesh Prasad is directing the sequel, which is expected to further explore the world established in the first film. Pen Studios, which has backed films including RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi, is collaborating on the project as the makers prepare to mount the sequel on a larger cinematic scale. Tumbbad 2 is slated to release in cinemas on December 3, 2027. Also Read: Alia Bhatt begins Tumbbad 2 shoot, joins Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Week 3 of The Traitors Season 2 brought another series of twists as the Innocents managed to identify a third Traitor, only for the game to change direction soon after. Shahneel Gill was exposed as a Traitor, while Krystle DSouza recruited Rida Tharana, one of the strongest voices against the Traitors, to join her side. The week also saw Shweta Tiwari and Rhea Chakraborty leave the game, while tasks involving Destiny Cards, curses, coffins, fire and blindfolds added more uncertainty to the palace. Shweta Tiwari reacts to her murder Shweta Tiwaris murder left her allies Shalini and Mallika visibly upset. Shweta recalled how the other contestants had strongly defended her during the previous days discussions and said she expected the Traitors to target her. I knew it! I knew it! Mujhe pata tha woh mera murder kar denge kyuki kal jis tarah sab lad rahe the mere liye ki yeh traitor nahi hai, yeh traitor nahi hai, yeh traitor nahi hai... mujhe pata tha main murder ho jayungi, Shweta said. Rhea Chakraborty calls her exit Dj Vu Rhea Chakraborty also found herself under suspicion during the Circle of Shaq. After being eliminated, she thanked the contestants and spoke about the friendships she had formed during her time on the show. I had a great time with all of you, aap log mere family away from family ban gaye, but I really love all of you, and I am sorry agar circle of shaq mai ek dusre pe finger uthaya, Rhea said. She added, Krystle, Sahil, Mallika ji, but it's just a game, and I hope that we can all be friends outside the game. This felt like deja vu. Roses are red, violets are blue, I am in my chapter two. How dare you? I am an innocent. Always have been, always will be. Thank you! Shahneel Gill exposed as third Traitor Tanyas questioning put Shahneel Gill under pressure as the latter struggled to explain the letter received by the Innocents each morning. Her responses eventually convinced the palace that she was hiding something. Even Shalinis Destiny Card could not prevent Shahneel from being exposed. After her elimination, she spoke about the friendships she had formed during the show. Guys mujhe bohot maza aaya, aap sabke sath time bitake, baatein karke, I didn't know ki main itni khoobsurat friendships apne sath wapis leke jayungi, Shahneel said. She added, And I am very happy that I got to be part of such a beautiful game, and I love you guys! Guys, main sabse innocent traitor hoon! Shahneels elimination followed the exits of Harman Singha and Aaditya Kulshreshth, also known as Kullu, making her the third Traitor to be identified by the Innocents. Rida Tharana joins Krystle DSouza Despite the Innocents' success in identifying Traitors, Krystle DSouza received an opportunity to recruit another player. She chose Rida Tharana, who had consistently been vocal about identifying the Traitors. Rida accepted the offer and joined Krystle on the Traitors side. The shift immediately changed the dynamics inside the palace, with Rida joining Krystle in the murder of Tanya. The game then took another turn during a task involving curses, coffins and fire. The Innocents made a wrong decision, resulting in Ikka becoming the latest casualty. Prish trusts Rida despite new developments Ridas move went unnoticed by Prish, who continued to consider her the only contestant he could completely trust. While discussing possible Traitors, Prish named several players but ruled out Rida. Koi bhi traitor ho sakta hai, iss time pe merko Dalip sir bhi lagte hai, Ansh bhi, merko Rida ke alawa sab traitor lagte hai, kyuki Rida is the only person who had the shield, so wahi ek person hai jo 100% innocent hai abhi tak, Prish said. Anshs journey comes to an end The weeks final task involved blindfolds, moving boxes and the ability to eliminate another contestant. Ansh, who was still affected by the previous mission, chose not to participate. His journey subsequently came to an end at the Circle of Shaq. Reflecting on his time on the show, Ansh said, Thank you so much guys, merko bohot acha laga yeha pe aake... yeh show mere life ka best show hai, matlab merko ek chance mila, aap log ke sath khela, aap log bohot ache log ho sab, aur mujhe bohot maza aaya. He concluded, Main day one se innocent tha, hoon aur rahunga! With Krystle now joined by Rida, the balance of power inside the palace has shifted once again. As the finale approaches, the remaining contestants are left wondering who the Traitors will target next. Hosted by Karan Johar, the latest episodes of The Traitors Season 2 are streaming exclusively on Prime Video. To have Asha Jis voice carry the song that represents the catharsis of the film is one of the most profound and memorable moments of my life as an artist. Being in the studio with her was pure joy and contentment. I only wish she were here in person to celebrate this moment with us. Chahatt Khanna is set to portray a police officer in the upcoming web series Pati Patni and Panga, which will stream on Amazon MX soon. The actress-entrepreneur underwent a significant physical transformation to bring authenticity to her character, losing around 7 kgs and completing intensive training focused on strength, stamina and the body language required for the role. Her preparation went beyond her physical appearance. Chahatt followed a disciplined workout routine and attended focused training sessions to understand the mindset and physicality of a police officer. Talking about the transformation, Chahatt says, When you are playing the character of a cop, you cannot just depend on costumes and makeup. The character needs to reflect in your body language, your fitness and the way you carry yourself. I knew I had to physically transform myself for the role, so I took the preparation very seriously. The actress adds, I lost around 7 kilos for the character and it was challenging because it required a lot of discipline and consistency, but I wanted the transformation to look natural on screen. I have shot a few action scenes for the series and thankfully my MMA (mixed martial arts) training of months came handy. While the physical transformation was demanding, Chahatt says understanding the attitude and temperament of a police officer was another important part of her preparation. The physical aspect was only one part of the preparation. I also worked on the way a cop walks, stands, reacts and handles situations. There has to be a certain confidence and authority in your body language. I wanted to bring that conviction to the character, she shares. Apart from Pati Patni and Panga, Chahatt will also appear in Hungama OTT's Hasratein, where she will play the role of a single mother. Speaking about returning to the sets after several years, Preity had earlier admitted that the experience came with its share of nervousness. There were nerves, she said. She recalled that Santoshi made her first day particularly challenging by giving her one of the films toughest scenes. He (director Santoshi) tortured me on day one by putting the most difficult scene of the film on the first day. So I was just looking at him (Sunny Deol), and I was shaking ki abhi main kya karoon (what do I do know)? He is a wonderful, big-hearted, kind, decent, good human being to work with because he really was like, Dont worry, he loves retakes. Kuch khaayegi (Will you eat something)? Once among Hindi cinemas most popular and highest-paid actors, Preity stepped away from acting full-time after marriage. Since 2008, she has appeared in only a handful of films, with Bhaiaji Superhit marking her last full-length role before her recent return. Actor Abhimanyu Singh has built a reputation for portraying intense and layered characters across Hindi, Telugu and Tamil cinema. From his acclaimed performance as Rananjay Singh, popularly known as Ransa, in Gulaal to his roles in films such as Sye, Rakta Charitra, Gabbar Singh, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Devara: Part 1, the actor has taken on several challenging parts during his career. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Abhimanyu Singh opened up about his journey in the film industry and recalled how the failure of his debut film Aks, which completed 25 years since its release, affected his career in its early stages. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Aks featured Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Raveena Tandon and Nandita Das, among others. Abhimanyu revealed that the film's failure had an immediate impact on the work opportunities coming his way. Yeah. It did. Matlab tab main serial wagera karta tha. Aur phir jab woh film aayi, Aks, uske baad serials mein bhi kaam milna band ho gaya, kyunki woh film flop ho gayi thi, he said. The actor recalled the contrast between making his debut alongside Amitabh Bachchan and subsequently finding himself without work. Ek taraf main kahan Amitabh Bachchan ke saath kaam kar raha tha aur ek taraf reality ye thi ke mere paas dusra koi kaam nahi tha, he said. However, Abhimanyu did not view the setback entirely negatively. He felt that facing failure early in his career helped him understand the value of success and the importance of staying grounded. Lekin mujhe laga ke chalo theek hai, shuruvat mein hi jhatka mil jaye toh better hai, he said. Kyunki kai baar agar safalta aapko shuruvat mein mil jaati hai toh uski importance ke value aap samajhte nahi ho. Aur uss chakkar mein kya hota hai ke aap bahot badi baazi lose kar sakte ho. Abhimanyu Singh calls Rakta Charitra a turning point While Aks proved to be a difficult beginning, Abhimanyu's career took a major turn with Rakta Charitra. His portrayal of Bukka Reddy in the Ram Gopal Varma-directed film received significant appreciation, particularly in the South. The day it got released in down South, everybody was shocked to see my performance. Everybody loved me as Bukka Reddy. It was a very challenging role for me, Abhimanyu recalled. The actor said the response to the film opened up new opportunities for him in South Indian cinema. Luckily, it opened all the doors down South. And then there was no looking back from there. It was indeed the turning point of my career, he said. Abhimanyu Singh admits his talent has not been explored fully yet Despite his extensive work across industries, Abhimanyu believes there is still more that filmmakers can explore when it comes to his acting abilities. Addressing fans who feel that Bollywood has not utilised his talent to its full potential, he agreed with their assessment. Fans keep commenting. And I agree, my talent has not been explored fully yet, he said. The actor also pointed to his eight years of theatre experience and expressed hope that he will continue to receive more demanding roles. I have done theatre for 8 years. But now I am getting my due and I feel that in the future people will give me more challenging roles, he said. And then the penance I did in theatre as an actor will be successful. Abhimanyu Singh on Bollywood and South Cinema Having worked extensively in both Hindi and South Indian films, Abhimanyu does not see a major difference between the industries today. According to him, the common factor is the passion for filmmaking. Not much of a difference. Because film industry is film industry and the working style is also the same, he said. He added, And the passion is same. People are like-minded. So, I don't see much of a difference in South Indian films and Bollywood films now. Abhimanyu Singh was recently seen as Hansraj Meena in Amazon Prime Video's Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, with the character receiving a positive response from viewers. The series has also been renewed for a second season. He was subsequently seen in Batwara 1947, backed by Aamir Khan Productions and starring Sunny Deol. The film also marked his reunion with filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi nearly three decades after their previous collaboration. Over the years, the filmmaker collaborated with leading stars including Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and Govinda. Kohlis death marks the loss of a filmmaker associated with an important phase of mainstream Hindi cinema. Hence, tributes from members of the film fraternity have begun pouring in. Even Ajay Devgn took to social media a day ago to pen a long note expressing his grief over Kohlis demise. Kohlis directorial debut Phool Aur Kaante, which starred Ajay Devgn in the lead, went on to become a significant success and established the actor in Hindi cinema. Rhea Chakrabortys journey on The Traitors has come to an end. The actress was eliminated from the reality show after navigating its twists, alliances and uncertainties, with her exit becoming an emotional moment as she addressed her fellow contestants. During her time on the show, Rhea participated in the game while forming connections with several contestants. Her exit speech reflected on those relationships as she acknowledged the people she had grown close to during her stint on the show. Addressing the contestants during her farewell, Rhea said, I had a great time with all of you. You guys became my family away from family. But I really love all of you and I am sorry if I've pointed fingers at anyone at the Circle of Shaq. Krystle, Sahil, Miss Mallika, but it's just a game and I hope that we can all be friends outside the game. This felt like deja vu. Roses are red, Violets are blue, I am in Chapter Two. How dare you? I am innocent. Always have been. Always will be. Thank you. Rhea became visibly emotional while delivering her final words. Her statement, particularly the repeated assertion of being innocent, added another layer to her departure from the show, where contestants are required to navigate trust, suspicion and strategy. The actress also described her experience on The Traitors as an opportunity to form friendships and experience a different side of herself. Throughout the game, her personality and approach to the challenges became part of her journey, while her interactions with fellow contestants remained an important aspect of her stint. Her reference to Chapter Two also stood out during the farewell. Rhea has previously spoken about moving forward in her personal and professional life, and her final statement on the show framed her elimination as another phase rather than an end point. With Rhea now out of the competition, The Traitors continues with the remaining contestants battling to make it to the end. Her departure, however, leaves behind the relationships and moments she shared during her time in the Circle of Shaq. There was a time when a Bollywood controversy involving Kangana Ranaut usually began with Kangana Ranaut. She would take on a filmmaker, question nepotism, attack an industry practice or make a provocative statement that dominated entertainment headlines for days. Increasingly, however, something else seems to be happening. A controversy can begin with somebody completely unrelated to Kangana and, sooner or later, she somehow becomes a part of it. The latest example is Kriti Sanon's much-discussed Raksha Bandhan advertisement. Kriti was already being criticised on social media over the bralette-style blouse she wore in the campaign and over what some viewers felt was an overly modern interpretation of a traditional festival. Then Kangana entered the debate. Questioning the campaign, Kangana asked why someone would tie a rakhi to her brother dressed in what she described as a bikini/undergarments. She also called the advertisement intentionally creepy. Almost immediately, the story changed. What had been a Kriti Sanon advertising controversy was now being reported as a Kangana Ranaut versus Kriti Sanon controversy. Kriti subsequently responded to the criticism without naming Kangana. She asked when society would stop telling women what to wear and argued that culture and traditions reside in a woman's heart, not in her neckline. Suddenly, the argument was no longer merely about an advertisement. It had turned into a wider debate about clothing, culture and who gets to decide what constitutes an appropriate way for a modern Indian woman to celebrate a festival. But the more fascinating aspect is how quickly Kangana became one of the central characters in a controversy that had initially had nothing to do with her. And Kriti isn't an isolated example. Barely before this, Kangana's seven-year-old feud with Taapsee Pannu found another lease of life. Taapsee was asked about their differences and pointed out that, despite years of headlines linking them, the two had actually never met. While explaining why their outlooks differed, Taapsee referred to differences in upbringing and communication. Kangana interpreted the remark as an attack on her family. The old sasti copy jibe returned, along with a dig at Taapsee's upcoming film Gandhari. Taapsee's subsequent two-word reaction, Hence proved, ensured that yet another chapter of their feud travelled across social media. At this point, Kangana versus Taapsee almost feels like one of Bollywood's longest-running franchises, despite the two actresses apparently never having shared a room. Around the same period, Kangana also referred publicly to Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana, Rakhi Sawant and others while responding to people she believes repeatedly criticise her. She argued that people who hadn't achieved even a fraction of her success had no business advising her and accused some of using her name merely to gain attention. Kangana has every right to express an opinion. But it does show how her role in Bollywood has changed. For years, Kangana's public identity was that of Bollywood's rebel. She challenged powerful filmmakers, attacked nepotism, questioned award shows and spoke repeatedly about outsiders and industry camps. Whether one agreed with her or not, there was usually a recognisable establishment she was fighting against. Today, she increasingly appears to be judging not merely how Bollywood functions, but how people within Bollywood should behave. Bollywood's rebel, in other words, increasingly resembles Bollywood's unofficial moral referee. That description needn't automatically be insulting. A large section of Kangana's appeal comes from the fact that she says things mainstream stars would never dare to say. Bollywood interviews are often full of carefully managed answers in which everybody praises everybody else. Kangana is the opposite. She is blunt, unpredictable and rarely afraid of an unpopular opinion. Which is precisely why the media loves her reactions. That is why blaming Kangana alone would be too simplistic. The media actively rewards the kind of opinion she supplies, while audiences enthusiastically participate. Her supporters defend her for saying what others won't. Her critics share the same clips to condemn her. Either way, the engagement keeps coming. The larger question, therefore, isn't whether Kangana should have opinions. Of course she should. The more interesting question is whether the sheer frequency of her interventions is changing the very quality that made her unique. There is a difference between being Bollywood's dissenter and appearing to pass judgment on practically every Bollywood disagreement. Kangana may argue that people and the media keep dragging her name into conversations because it guarantees attention, and in several cases she would have a point. But the Kriti Sanon episode also proves that Kangana sometimes walks into a controversy entirely on her own. Perhaps that explains the strange place she now occupies in Bollywood. She is simultaneously critic and content, outsider and central character, provocateur and someone who complains about being provoked. It is simply Kangana Ranaut versus whoever happens to be in the news next. Sandeepa Dhar is all set to explore a new side of her acting with Chumbak, stepping into the world of comedy with a project that she describes as exactly the kind of humour she wanted to be associated with. While comedy is a relatively new space for the actress, Sandeepa feels fortunate that her first experience with the genre came through a distinctive and unconventional approach to storytelling. Speaking about her experience, Sandeepa said, Firstly, I think you are right. I have never done comedy, especially comedy like this. I think I got really lucky because if I had to do comedy, it had to be like an Aatish (Kapadia) and JD (Majethia) kind of a comedy. For Sandeepa, being part of Chumbak was an opportunity to explore comedy in a way that felt fresh and different. She credits the team for bringing her on board and giving her the chance to be a part of a project that she believes offers a unique take on the genre. She added, So, I am so glad that they took me in Chumbak and made me part and, of course, Netflix for sanctioning something like this. The actress also expressed her excitement about being associated with a platform and creative team whose earlier work she has enjoyed as an audience member. With Chumbak, Sandeepa is also approaching the project from the perspective of a viewer who has been looking for this kind of storytelling. Because I think we all, even as an audience, I have loved their past shows. So, I wanted to watch something like this now as the millennial that I am. So, I am really really glad that I got to be part of it, she shared. Her excitement reflects what makes Chumbak particularly interesting for Sandeepathe chance to experience a new genre while being part of a show that aligns with the kind of contemporary, unconventional entertainment she enjoys herself. Last week, Bollywood Hungama reported that Deepak Tijori had complained about shows of his Gujarati film Get Set Go being removed despite the film performing well. He further alleged that this was done to accommodate Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2. Following our report, the issue was picked up by several other media outlets. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the veteran actor-filmmaker spoke at length about the controversy, the challenges faced by Gujarati films in securing screens and a lot more. After you raised your voice, how has the Gujarati industry reacted? Did other Gujarati filmmakers also reach out to you? Yes. Most Gujarati filmmakers have gone through this ordeal. They have now started talking about it as well. Vaishal Shah, who has made several films along with Anand Pandit, has also spoken about it. He reiterated how important it was to raise our voice. Producer Abhilash Ghoda, too, echoed our sentiments. Rakeshbhai Patel, the owner of Wide Angle multiplex, also supported us, and so did the owner of Connplex. They are all in our favour. These theatres get bullied by the national chains. They are now seriously considering speaking to the government and asking for a rule whereby cinemas are required to compulsorily play Gujarati films, just as it is done in Maharashtra for Marathi films. I am hopeful that something will come out of it. Now that Toxic has been released, the situation will get even worse. God knows what would happen to the Gujarati film Tom & Cherry, which releases this Friday (August 28). In short, we just dont get screens. Its like we are making Gujarati films for just one week! How can you make money in one week? Its a joke! Did raising your voice help you get more screens? Yes, it had an impact. For instance, Connplex and Wide Angle owners immediately supported us. Connplex brought back our film in some centres. Wide Angle, too, played our show, though they got into a tough situation. Yet, they said, Deepak bhai, we have liked your film and would love to showcase it. Batwara 1947 is produced by Aamir Khan, with whom you have had a long association. Did you talk to him and apprise him of the situation? No. Unko bolke faayda nahin hai. These are the power games played not by the producers but the distributors and national chains. National chains waale boss hai. They straight away make it clear that Hum log ko jo mahine mein khilata-pilata hai, woh hamare maai baap hai! You did so many films in the 90s and something of this sort never happened at that time Not at all. I also faced it during the release of my directorial, Tipppsy (2024). Three films had been released at that time. One film was of T-Series (Srikanth) while the other was a Hollywood film (Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes). The management at the multiplexes categorically informed me, We cant give you even one evening show. We can lose our jobs! We are your fans and we love you. But please understand our predicament. They revealed that they need to justify the programming. Otherwise, they would be asked, Why did you give this one show? Tera kya rishta hai unke saath? Tumhara ration paani humse chalta hai. How can you do this to us?. I did a Gujarati film after so many years as the subject is strong. People have also loved the action and treatment, which is at par with global standards. Even the critics spoke so well about our film. As for the audience, you have no idea how much love I have got. It's unbelievable. From the kids to the older generation, everyone has lapped it up. Hence, it's unfortunate that it had to suffer in such a manner. You directed Oops (2003) which clashed with Hungama. Koi Mil Gaya released a week later and Tere Naam a week after that. Fareb (2005) clashed with Dus and a week later, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya was released. Both your films were small or mid-budget and yet I believe they faced no problem in getting screens True. Then, we never had any problem. The distributors used to see the film and then decide the show-sharing. Now that practice is gone. Today, many multiplexes have 8 or 10 screens. Yet, its shocking that they were unable to provide even one show to your film Exactly. My ask was just 1 show or 2 prime shows. I didnt even ask for 1 full screen. At least, people should know that the film is running. It is plain dadagiri. I can understand if youre doing it based on the films performance at the box office. But indulging in such practices without any valid reason is simply unfair. This whole attitude of, Hum aa rahe hain toh aap sab hat jao is wrong. Rakul Preet Singh says Ramayana script helped her discover new facets of Surpanakha
Rakul Preet Singh is set to take on a different kind of role with Nitesh Tiwaris upcoming Ramayana, where she will portray Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita. For Rakul, the opportunity to play Surpanakha comes from the scope the character offers beyond her familiar portrayal in the epic. She believes that different interpretations of characters from the Ramayana allow actors to explore their personalities while staying rooted in the original text. Every few years, you see a different interpretation and presentation of these characters, while keeping the essence rooted in the original text, Rakul said. As an actor, you only look at a character from that lens, that it's a character that has layers, that has the possibility and ability to shine through the film. The actor was particularly drawn to the different facets of Surpanakhas personality. While the character is often associated with the events involving Ram, Sita and Lakshman, Rakul feels there is more to her story than the incident she is traditionally remembered for. She was apparently the most beautiful woman of Lanka. She had an ego, but then she was layered. As an actor, it's fun to explore those layers, she said. Rakul also revealed that the script introduced her to aspects of Surpanakhas life that she was previously unaware of. There was a lot about her that I didn't know. When I read the script, there was a lot about her life before and after that incident where her nose is chopped off by Lakshman, she said. She added that Surpanakhas journey and her encounter with Ram were among the elements that made the role interesting for her. What happens in Surpanakha's life and how does she meet, stumble upon Ramthere's a lot which I didn't know, which for me was new when I read the script, and which is why I liked it, Rakul said. With Ramayana offering a broader look at its characters, Rakuls portrayal of Surpanakha is expected to explore a side of the character beyond the conventional antagonist image.
