Netflix marked 10 years of its presence in India with the grand premiere of Operation Safed Sagar at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event brought together top Indian defence officials, war veterans, members of the real Golden Arrows Squadron, and the cast and crew of the series. In a first for a premiere red carpet, the Chiefs of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force came together for the event. The series focuses on the Indian Air Forces role during the Kargil War and explores a chapter of military history that has received limited representation on screen. The premiere was attended by Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, and Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth. Addressing the gathering, Sarandos spoke about the platforms journey in the country and its efforts to take Indian stories to audiences worldwide. He described Operation Safed Sagar as Netflix Indias biggest and most ambitious production so far. According to Sarandos, the project has generated more than $24 million, approximately 215 crore, for the Indian economy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared a special video message during the event and appreciated the team for presenting the story with authenticity and respect. He highlighted the difficult conditions faced by the Indian Air Force during the Kargil War, with missions conducted at altitudes between 15,000 and 18,000 feet. Twenty-five years after Dil Chahta Hai made its mark on Hindi cinema, Farhan Akhtar has opened up about the challenges he faced while making the 2001 film. The filmmaker revealed that convincing actors to be part of a story centred on three friends was not easy, especially at a time when romantic dramas and love triangles were popular in Bollywood. Speaking to The Juggernaut, Akhtar recalled the difficulties he faced while casting the film, particularly Aamir Khan. Casting Aamir Khan wasn't an easy task. Everyone said, 'I don't want to do a multi-hero film' ... At the time, everyone wanted to do a love triangle. According to Akhtar, he was clear from the beginning that Dil Chahta Hai would not rely on the familiar storyline of two men competing for the same woman. Instead, friendship was intended to remain at the heart of the film. For me, the core of the film was about friendship and I wouldn't have two guys fighting over a girl, he said. Akhtar also spoke about his efforts to get Aamir Khan to hear the script. Despite his father Javed Akhtar having previously worked with the actor on Lagaan, Farhan chose not to seek a special introduction. Instead, he continued approaching the actor and waited for months for an opportunity to narrate the complete story. I didn't ask for any special introduction. I kept knocking on doors and waited eight months before Aamir agreed to hear the full script, Akhtar recalled. He added that Aamir later told him he appreciated how determined Farhan had been to cast him, as it demonstrated how strongly the filmmaker wanted him for the role. Released in 2001, Dil Chahta Hai went on to establish a new portrayal of friendship in mainstream Hindi cinema. As the film completes 25 years, Akhtar's recollection highlights the hurdles he faced before the story of three friends eventually reached the big screen. Looking ahead, Malhotra sees technology, particularly artificial intelligence, playing an important role in the evolution of storytelling. Malhotra believes these changes will also raise audience expectations, with originality becoming increasingly important. Were entering an era of disruptive storytelling where almost every convention weve accepted over the last hundred years will be challenged. The audiences benchmark for originality will become dramatically higher. Over the next decade, I dont believe there will be much middle ground left. Whether its a theatrical film or a streaming series, audiences will either deeply embrace what you create or reject it completely. The premium on originality, conviction and bold storytelling has never been higher.
