Hanuman Ansh continues to surprise every single day. On Wednesday, September 2, it earned Rs. 7.73 crore, which was not much of a drop from the Tuesday earnings of Rs. 8.07 crores. This is a feat considering the makers offered tickets for a discount on Tuesday. However, on Thursday, when the collections were expected to slip below Wednesday's numbers, the collections instead went into double digits. As per early estimates, the Thursday earnings are around Rs. 11.20 crores. Hence, Hanuman Ansh has now collected approx. Rs. 75 crores and will cross Rs. 100 crore in the fifth weekend. Hanuman Ansh has created a sensation, but a month ago, there was barely any awareness about it. It was to be released on July 31, a day after the release of the gigantic Hollywood blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film was pushed, rightfully so, by a week and arrived in cinemas on August 7. The makers resorted to a Buy One Get One (BOGO) ticket-free offer in its initial week. On the day of its release, it was screened in 289 theatres and earned just Rs. 10.44 lakhs. In its first week, it earned a mere Rs. 1.07 crore, a figure that also includes tickets booked under the BOGO offer as well as those sold on Tuesday at discounted prices of just Rs. 99 and Rs. 149. From Rs. 12.89 lakhs on its first Thursday, the collections slipped to Rs. 3.02 lakhs a day later, on Friday, August 14. This is when Hanuman Ansh was screened in just 30 screens due to competition from Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947. A day later, the film was screened on just 29 screens, the lowest screen count it had faced until then. While it earned Rs. 3.02 lakhs on August 14, the earnings jumped to Rs. 9.80 lakhs on Independence Day. Every film saw dramatic jumps on August 15, including the debacle, Batwara 1947. As a result, all films saw a huge drop in earnings on August 16. But Hanuman Ansh was perhaps the ONLY film in the country whose collections rose to Rs. 16.15 lakhs that day. Despite playing in limited screens, the occupancy was 73% on August 15 and 69% on August 16. This itself was a sign that the film is having a miracle run, but perhaps everyone missed it. Yet, overall collections remained low and the second week earnings were just Rs. 50 lakhs. On its third Friday, Hanuman Ansh jumped by nearly Rs. 10 lakhs compared to the previous day and collected Rs. 15.93 lakhs. Screen count also jumped from 38 to 128. When the film collected Rs. 2.58 crores on third Sunday, it became clear that its going to have a golden run. Yet, it was difficult to imagine that after collecting Rs. 11.09 crores in Week 3, Hanuman Ansh would go on to collect a whopping Rs. 62 crores in Week 4. On its day of release, Hanuman Ansh had 368 shows in 289 theatres and sold 4,505 tickets. On day 28, it played in 7,393 shows in 1,155 theatres and sold nearly 5.75 lakh tickets. Whats important to note is that the debacle of Toxic also played a part in the miraculous run of Hanuman Ansh. The day the Yash-starrer released, on August 26, Hanuman Ansh's collections dropped to Rs 1.61 crore, compared to Rs. 2.54 crores the previous day. On its second day, it became clear that Toxic has been rejected outright. Hanuman Ansh took advantage of the situation, and its shows increased considerably with each passing day. On Saturday and Sunday, Toxic was played in 3 or 4 shows in single screens and 1 show was devoted to Hanuman Ansh. In 48 hours, the situation was reversed. Toxic opened with a bang, proving that there was considerable excitement around the film. Had it enjoyed positive word of mouth, it would have retained a large share of its shows. Hanuman Ansh would still have secured decent showcasing, but certainly not at this scale. In that scenario, its collections may not have even reached the Rs. 75 crore mark. Exhibitors-distributors speak Besides the debacle of Toxic, sincere and honest storytelling and extremely positive word of mouth, what helped was the marketing push. Moreover, Cinpolis India's distribution strategy also worked wonders. Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinpolis India, explained, Most films get judged in two weekends. The data on this one told us to wait. When we consolidated to 40 screens in the second week, per-screen collections nearly tripled, which told us the film was holding its audience. So, we rebuilt the release around that demand, centre by centre. We held shows where occupancy was strong, added shows where bookings built up, and took the film back into markets it had left. It is now playing on more than 2,000 screens across every major chain and hundreds of independent cinemas. Gautam Dutta, CEO Revenue & Operations, PVR INOX Ltd remarked, Hanuman Ansh is driven by strong audience appreciation and positive word of mouth. The film is currently witnessing occupancy above 50% at PVR INOX, while its biggest fourth week and strongest Tuesday performance yet underline the depth of its growing audience connection. To conclude Hanuman Anshs journey is a reminder that at the box office, genuine audience acceptance can overturn every prediction. From being reduced to just 29 screens to becoming the countrys top-performing film on certain days, its extraordinary rise has been powered by word of mouth, smart showcasing and fortunate circumstances. With the Rs. 100 crore mark now within touching distance, Hanuman Ansh has already emerged as one of the biggest box office miracles in recent times. Shobhinaw Satyaas journey to playing Neem Karoli Baba in Hanuman Ansh took an unexpected turn when he was initially working behind the camera as an assistant director and handling props on the set. What began as a behind-the-scenes role eventually led him to portray the spiritual figure after the films original lead actor suddenly fell ill. According to Shobhinaw, the director noticed him on the set and was struck by his resemblance to Neem Karoli Baba. The similarity became even more apparent when archival photographs of Baba from his younger years were compared with the actors appearance. Shobhinaw explained that he had joined the project as an assistant director and had not initially entered the film with the intention of acting. However, circumstances surrounding the lead actor changed the course of the project, prompting the director to consider him for the role. He said, I came into this film as an assistant director. Now, if I had come into this film as an actor, then sir would have told me that I had to do certain things. Maybe if I was a non-vegetarian, I would have said, Yes sir, now I will quit non-veg, I will quit this, I will do that. But things are happening completely the opposite way with me here. Having worked as an assistant director for nearly 15 days, Shobhinaw had already spent considerable time on the set, allowing the director to observe his behaviour and daily habits closely. According to him, several aspects of his lifestyle already aligned with what was required for the character. Shobhinaw revealed that he had been a vegetarian for the past eight years and did not consume meat or other non-vegetarian food. He also said that he consciously avoided using certain words in his everyday conversations, despite them being considered ordinary by others. Looking at the experience from a spiritual perspective, Shobhinaw felt that he had already been prepared for the role. He believed that several changes people may experience after attending the mela had, in his case, taken place much earlier. He said, So all these things, Baba had already sent me prepared for the character. So what happens is, when the mela happens, the things that happen to people later had already happened to me earlier. Rather than recreating a conventional folk number, the team approached the Rajasthani Ghoomar dance style through a modern musical lens. Speaking about the track, Ray said, Ghoom Ghoom is a complete different world. I think its a trance where it takes you musically to a place called Rajasthan. He further explained the creative process behind the song. We tried to come up with a world of Rajasthani Ghoomar dance style in a complete new way. From making the melody, to breaking down the word Ghoomar into Ghoom Ghoom, and then creating the whole family of rhythm, beats, and synth with sub-frequency bass lines, it was a new chapter in its own way, quite different from what I have been creating. According to Ray, the song went through multiple stages of development before the final arrangement was locked. The makers had initially asked for a Rajasthani song, following which Ray explored different approaches with Gurmeet Singh before arriving at the final concept. The makers of this film wanted a Rajasthani song. I had worked on a couple of approaches with Gurmeet sir, but then we zeroed down on this specific idea. This took some time to shape up as Kumaar sir wrote the lyrics after the tune was locked, and then I was working with Ankur Tewari on the arrangements and sounds for this specific song. Ray has also worked across different aspects of film music, including composing songs, producing music, creating background scores and singing. He described the transition between these roles as a gradual process shaped by the opportunities he received. No, actually this has been a very smooth transition. By Gods grace, I got opportunities that made me face challenges musically, and going on and conquering them has gotten me to where I am today. Speaking about the difference between working on songs and film scores, particularly across Indian and international cinema, Ray said, Having the opportunity to work in both spheres of filmmaking, I have seen that there are some things which make these worlds different. For Hindi cinema, you need songs to reach a wider audience through lyrics and music, whereas abroad its mostly film scores that are the most essential part of storytelling. Ray also spoke about the growing global presence of Indian music, citing collaborations and artists who have contributed to its international reach. Indian audiences consume music differently compared to the West. Indian music has been travelling very well on the global stage from the time Ravi Shankar and The Beatles teamed up. Artists like Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney have also contributed immensely through the Asian Underground movement in the UK. On the film scale, A.R. Rahman sirs Jai Ho put Indian music on the map for the world to experience. I think we will get to see many more collaborations in the future, soon. With Ghoom Ghoom, Ray has brought together Rajasthani musical influences and contemporary sound design for Mirzapur: The Movie, adding another musical layer to the films larger cinematic world. Film Heritage Foundations 4K restoration of Kamal Amrohis 1972 classic Pakeezah, starring Meena Kumari, is set to receive its global premiere at Frances Festival Lumire in Lyon, followed by a gala screening at the BFI London Film Festival. The restoration marks a significant step in preserving one of Indian cinemas most celebrated films. The restoration has been undertaken by Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) in association with the Amrohi family. The screening at the BFI IMAX in London will be presented by FHF director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur along with Kamal Amrohis children Tajdar and Rukhsaar Amrohi and grandson Bilal Amrohi. The restoration took two years and presented several technical challenges, as the original camera negative was found to be almost melted and unusable. FHF subsequently worked with an interpositive, a CinemaScope print and a colour reversal internegative preserved by the NFDC-National Film Archive of India. Original film stills and memories shared by Tajdar and Rukhsaar Amrohi were also used to help recreate the colour palette and visual consistency of the film. Speaking about the restoration, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur said, Restoring Pakeezah has been a long-held dream, and I am so grateful to Bilal Amrohi for being the moving spirit and encouraging the family to support the restoration and bring the film back to life. Pakeezah is a film that has been etched in my memory since I was a child when I watched it for the first time with my grandmother in a darkened cinema in Dumraon, Bihar. The restoration of Pakeezah took two years. It has been one of the most exciting yet one of the most challenging restorations I have worked on. When I went to inspect the original camera negative and saw that it had almost melted, my heart sank. And the other film elements we had to work with were not in good condition with faded colours, scratches and mould. In my minds eye, I could see each frame like a painting saturated with colours, the opulent sets and the luminous beauty of Meena Kumari and the songs of Ghulam Mohammed were ringing in my ears as if it was yesterday, but not a single cast or crew member survived from the film and I wondered how I would be able to restore Kamal Amrohis original vision with what I had to work with. During our research we discovered original film stills which helped a great deal and I also consulted Tajdar and Rukhsaar Amrohi who had visited the sets and had vivid memories from the making of the film. I couldnt have asked for a better showcase for the restored Pakeezah than the Festival Lumiere in Lyon, the birthplace of cinema followed by a gala screening at the London Film Festival. Tajdar Amrohi recalled his association with the film and his fathers dedication to the project. He said, I was at the grand premiere of Pakeezah in 1972 with my father and Choti Ammi (Meena Kumari) and the film cans arrived at Maratha Mandir in a palanquin. I never imagined that I would be presenting the restored film with my family at the gala premiere in London fifty-four years later. I would like to thank Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and Film Heritage Foundation for restoring the film with so much passion and meticulous care and for bringing my father and his greatest work back to life so that new generations will see the unforgettable Meena Kumari and enjoy the beauty of the film. I remember when I was a child, my father was deep into the making of Pakeezah. Everything in our lives revolved around Pakeezah. My father had put in everything he had in the film and whenever we asked him for anything as children, his response would always be, After Pakeezah. Pakeezah was his lifes mission. I have so many memories of the film as I would regularly visit the sets on Floor No. 3 at Filmistan where much of the film was shot. The film has influenced generations of filmmakers and even today I am sometimes asked how he achieved some of the shots. Rukhsaar Amrohi also reflected on her fathers connection with the film and Meena Kumari. She said, Pakeezah was my fathers obsession, his dream, his oxygen that gave meaning to his life. No one else could have played the role of Pakeezah, but Choti Ammi (Meena Kumari). She was Pakeezah. My father nurtured the film for over fifteen years like a child till it was fully matured and ready to be presented to the world. As a thirteen-year-old, I witnessed the countless sacrifices my father made and the relentless dedication and perfectionism in the face of almost insurmountable challenges to make his vision a reality. I have preserved every bit of his legacy that remains in Amroha, but for years, I felt that my fathers legacy as a great master of cinema had been forgotten. I would like to thank Shivendra Singh Dungarpur for taking the initiative to restore Pakeezah with so much love and care. I only wish my father were alive to see his creation restored and reborn for the world to see fifty-four years after it was released. I cannot wait to see the restored film back on the big screen and I will be travelling to London to present the film. Pakeezah, which was released on February 4, 1972, underwent a production journey spanning nearly 15 years. Originally conceived in the 1950s, the film began shooting in black-and-white before moving to Eastmancolor. The production was interrupted several times, including after Amrohi and Meena Kumari separated, before being revived in 1969. The film went on to become one of the defining works of Indian cinema, with Meena Kumaris performance as Sahibjaan becoming central to its enduring legacy. She passed away on March 31, 1972, just weeks after the films release. The restored version of Pakeezah is presented in 4K with a 5.1 sound mix. The film runs for 153 minutes and features Meena Kumari alongside Ashok Kumar, Raaj Kumar and Nadira. The restoration was carried out by Film Heritage Foundation at LImmagine Ritrovata laboratory in association with Bilal Amrohi of Lionheart Cinema. The makers of The Vvaan have released the first song from the upcoming folklore-fantasy film, titled Samjho Na. The track features Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah in their first on-screen pairing, offering audiences a closer look at the romantic equation between their characters. While the teaser of The Vvaan introduced viewers to its supernatural setting and folklore-driven world, Samjho Na shifts the focus towards the relationship at the centre of the story. Set against the larger backdrop of mystery, adventure and fantasy, the song explores the romantic side of the characters played by Sidharth and Tamannaah. Released under the Zee Music label, the song has been composed and produced by Tanishk Bagchi, with Jubin Nautiyal and Suvarna Tiwari on vocals and Manoj Muntashir credited for the lyrics. Krishna Kishor has handled additional live production, while Eric Pillai has mixed and mastered the track. Michael Edwin Pillai serves as assistant mix engineer. The wider universe of the film has also been expanded through The Legend of Vvaan comic book. Director Indrajit Lankesh is introducing newcomers Gauravv Dhingra and Akaisha Vats with his upcoming film Jai Hind Jai Sindh: A Love Story. The filmmaker has opted for fresh faces for the central characters while bringing together an ensemble of established actors including Mahesh Manjrekar, Jaya Prada, Chhaya Kadam, Rahul Dev and Zarina Wahab. Lankesh said the decision to cast Gauravv and Akaisha was based on their suitability for the characters rather than their familiarity among audiences. According to the director, the two actors brought an element of innocence and freshness that he felt was required for the story. Speaking about the casting process, Lankesh said, When I began casting Jai Hind Jai Sindh, I wasn't looking for familiar faces, I was looking for actors who could make the audience believe in the characters. Gaurav and Akaisha had that honesty and innocence. They walked into the auditions without any baggage, and that freshness is exactly what the story needed.
