Bangladesh dengue outbreak worsens as 52 die in just 13 days

Digital Desk | Dhaka, Sep 14 (IANS) As Bangladesh grapples with an unprecedented dengue outbreak, as many as 52 people died from the infection in the first 13 days of September, marking the highest monthly fatalities recorded so far this year and raising serious concerns over the worsening public health crisis, local media reported. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the dengue death toll stood at 149, while 51,837 patients had been hospitalised until Sunday. Health experts have attributed the rising dengue deaths to delayed hospitalisation, inappropriate treatment, and the heightened vulnerability of high-risk groups, with many patients seeking testing and medical care only after their condition turns critical, Bangladeshs leading newspaper The Daily Star reported. HM Nazmul Ahsan, associate professor at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, said that the recent spike in dengue deaths is largely a consequence of the rapid increase in infections nationwide. According to Nazmul, three broad sets of factors are behind the fatalities: viral factors, patient-related vulnerabilities and treatment-related complications. Mushtuq Husain, a public health expert, called for strengthening dengue care through a three-tier system of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare. On Sunday, Bangladeshs State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku warned that the dengue situation in Dhaka and other districts could worsen further in the coming months, urging people to stay alert. The risk of dengue may increase further in the coming months, so everyone needs to become aware from now, Bangladeshi media outlet UNB quoted Tuku as saying. According to a report in Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, dengue has spread across all 64 districts of the country, with several hundred people being hospitalised every day after contracting the mosquito-borne disease. Deaths from the largely preventable illness are also being reported almost daily. The government has warned that the situation could deteriorate further in late September and early October, with infections expected to rise in at least 15 districts. For the past one-and-a-half to two months, a section of public health experts and entomologists had been warning that the dengue situation could deteriorate further in September and October. Speaking at an event at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on September 9, Bangladeshs State Minister for Health and Family Welfare MA Muhit said that dengue infections had already begun to rise, with the peak period expected in the last week of September and early October. Despite years of media reports and discussions over rising dengue infections and deaths, the governments lack of commitment to dengue prevention has remained evident. The most glaring weakness has been the lack of coordination, Prothom Alo reported.

Vardhaan Puri remembers Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations with grandfather Amrish Puri

Digital Desk | Mumbai, Sep 14 (IANS) Actor Vardhaan Puri has opened up about celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with his family. He recalled cherished childhood memories of the festival with his late grandfather and legendary actor Amrish Puri. Speaking about his fondest childhood memory associated with Ganesh Chaturthi, Vardhaan shared with IANS, My fondest childhood memory of Ganesh Chaturthi is the beautiful tradition we started when we first brought Bappa home. My Dadu, my Dadi, parents, my sister Sachi, and my entire family would come together to make Bappas favourite food - modaks with our own hands. That tradition continues till today, and every year, Bappas arrival brings so much love, happiness, and celebration into our home. It feels like a beautiful blessing that we get to experience together as a family. Talking about how his family celebrates the festival, he added, During Ganpati, our entire family comes together from all over the world to celebrate Bappa. We bring the same Ganpati idol from our temple into our living room, celebrate Bappas birthday for two days with delicious Maharashtrian food and lots of modaks, and then lovingly take him back to our temple. For Visarjan, we bring an eco-friendly Ganpati made of coconut, because we truly believe that while celebrating Bappa, we must also take care of His most beautiful creation, our Mother Earth. What makes it special is that every year, Bappa brings us closer as a family and makes the celebration even more beautiful, he added. Vardhaan also spoke about the life lesson Bappa has given him, saying, One thing Ganpati Bappa teaches me is to trust His divine plan. He comes into our homes every year, fills them with love, laughter, and celebration, and then leaves-only to return again, bringing with Him even greater joy. Vardhaan Puri is the grandson of the late legendary actor Amrish Puri, who was known for his memorable performances in Hindi cinema, particularly his iconic portrayal of Mogambo in the 1987 film Mr. India. Amrish Puri passed away on January 12, 2005, at the age of 72.

Yemen conflict intensifies as Houthi attacks threaten Red Sea oil supplies

The conflict in Yemen intensified on Sunday, as government forces launched attacks against Iran-backed Houthi rebels along the Red Sea and Houthis fired into neighbouring Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen's government. The Yemeni government vowed to send more forces to the Red Sea coast and one official conceded a painful defeat last week when Houthis captured the port city of Mokha and an island on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial shipping alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. The escalation -- especially Houthi attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure and its shipping in the Red Sea -- adds pressure on global oil supplies and prices, and that could give Iran leverage in its war with the United States. As Yemen risks descending into another civil war, the United Nations estimated that more than 80,000 people in the impoverished country have been displaced by the fighting since the start of September. Trump backs new ethics rules to push crypto bill, but it may not be enough

President Donald Trump had been hearing the message loud and clear for weeks about the sweeping cryptocurrency bill being written in the Senate: to get it across the line, he would have to agree to ethics provisions that apply to him, too. First, Trump agreed to a measure that would bar him and his wife from issuing the types of meme coins that they swiftly launched as he prepared to return to the White House for a second time. And then another concession came late Sunday, when Republicans said Trump consented to a tougher ethics proposal that several key senators had demanded. Now, a pivotal Senate vote on the cryptocurrency bill on Tuesday could mark a watershed moment for the $2.3 trillion market - but it hinges mainly on whether those sign-offs from Trump go far enough. That vote could determine whether Washington cements crypto legitimacy into law or whether a frustrated, deep-pocketed industry could unleash even more campaign cash in the midterm elections.
