Alisha Chinai began her singing career with Adventures Of Tarzan (1985). A major turning point came with 'Made In India', which made her a household name. Moreover, at a time when music videos were still a novelty in India, Made In India was accompanied by a striking video featuring Alisha alongside the dapper Milind Soman. As a result, the song became a rage. As per Wikipedia, Made In India was the first ever Indian pop album to achieve commercial success on a par with Indian film music albums and it also marked a spectacular beginning to the era of Indian music videos... it also became the first non-film album to break unit sales records in India. In a conversation with Komal Nahta, Alisha Chinai looked back at this turning point in her life. When asked if she expected Made In India would become such a big hit, she replied, I didnt expect it would become a sensation. However, my gut instinct told me that this song was going to be very special. I felt that while recording the track. The way I sang it, I was actually thinking of Noor Jehan. Shes my favourite singer. I was trying to use her inflexion and her harkat. It was a bit high-pitched for me. But Biddu sir said, No, no, you have to sing it! So, I sang and I told myself, Theres something about this song; its special. Whoever heard the song told us, Either itll work, or itll flop! She added, Finally, when the video came out, it blew everyone off. That video caused a revolution. Earlier, when I sang, there were no videos or television. So, it was the first time the audience really saw the singer singing the song. MTV also just came in and the whole pop revolution began as a result. So, the timing was just perfect. Today, September 27, marks the 94th birth anniversary of one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Yash Chopra. He is remembered not just for his wonderful films, many of which have stood the test of time, but also for his jovial nature with which he charmed one and all. Not many, however, are aware that he also played an important role in helping Adnan Sami secure Indian citizenship. On the occasion of Yash Chopras birth anniversary, Bollywood Hungama exclusively brings to you a little-known piece of trivia. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Adnan Sami in August 2026 during the release of his latest song, Ishq Tamasha. The interview was conducted in his study, where Adnan has displayed the Preamble to the Constitution of India. We asked him about it, which led him to recall Yash Chopras kind gesture. Adnan Sami said, Yash ji was like a father figure to me. He was extremely loving and supportive of me. As part of the process of getting Indian citizenship, you need to have a letter of recommendation from a fellow citizen. Its a part of the procedure. I spoke to Yash ji and he was very forthcoming. He said, It would be my absolute pleasure to do that (smiles). Adnan continued, A lot of people feel that it happened overnight. Some assume that one day I woke up and decided, Chalo Indian citizenship lete hain, and I got it the next day (laughs). Thats not how its done. It was a long process. It took me about 18 years to get it! The requirements were strict. Also, my application got rejected twice, that too, not on any grounds. These are bureaucratic procedures. If you dont cross the letter T properly or put the dot on the I properly, or if you leave some column blank by mistake, your application gets rejected on such grounds. They inform you of the reason behind it. Then you need to begin from scratch. And the next time, you make sure to cross the T perfectly (laughs). Adnan Sami further said, So, these things take time. It took 18 years. This is why I turn around and say, It was a long struggle. It required herculean patience. Therefore, once I was blessed with it, thats why I value every aspect of it. The latest episode of Bigg Boss 20 saw Salman Khan address Yung DSAs remarks against Aman Gandhi during a recent diss battle, particularly his use of women and traditionally feminine symbols as insults. The host questioned Yungs approach to the argument and also called out his group for supporting him during the confrontation. The issue began after the ration task was cancelled last week because the housemates failed to complete it. Bigg Boss subsequently gave the contestants an opportunity to win a luxury basket containing food items. Aman Gandhi won the task, but was given a condition that required him to choose a fellow contestant whose life would be taken. Aman chose Yung DSA. Yung was already nominated after no one from his group saved him during the nomination task. Since Aman and Yung belonged to opposing groups and were not particularly close, Amans decision led to a confrontation between the two. During their argument and a subsequent diss battle, Yung directed remarks at Aman that used women and feminine symbols as insults. Salman addressed the issue during the latest episode. Salman Khan Questions Yung DSAs Use of Women as an Insult Speaking about Yungs group, Salman pointed out that the members had consistently supported one another. He then questioned what Yung had expected from Aman, given that they belonged to opposing groups. I understand you were angry. I understand you wanted to diss him. Tell me one thing. What does your mother wear at home? Nawari? Kashta? Bangles? Bracelet? Like me? Torn shoes like me? If she wears Kashta, Nawari, Saree, does she do anything wrong? So, what is this way of dissing? That you call someone a woman, Salman said. He further questioned the contradiction between discussing womens rights in the house and using femininity as a way to demean another contestant. In this house, you talk about women's rights. But when you tell Aman to wear bangles, your entire group was supporting you. Amrapali and Love. You didn't stop Yung either, he said. Salman also referred to the familiar film dialogue, Humne choodiyaan nahin pehen rakhi hai, and questioned the message behind using bangles as a symbol of weakness. So, wear bangles, become a woman. Be weak. It means that only, right? he asked. He then brought up Yungs relationship with his mother and sisters and questioned how he could use the same imagery as an insult. And you have a mother and sisters. You love them like crazy. So, how were you okay with someone saying that we don't wear bangles? That means you are talking about your own mother and sister. That my mother and sisters wear bangles. They are the weaker sex, Salman said. The host acknowledged that such expressions can sometimes be used casually because of how deeply they are embedded in popular culture, but urged Yung to reconsider the language. Sometimes it comes in the flow. Because this dialogue has been in my mind since childhood. Change that clich dialogue to, I have worn a bracelet, Salman added. Salman Khan says Yung DSA may be misfit in his group Salman subsequently questioned the contestants about whether anyone in their respective groups was a misfit. Amrapali Dubey named Mary Kom, while Uditi Singh also named Mary. Aman Gandhi named Mary and, to some extent, Love Gill. Aasif Khan and ScoutOP, however, said they did not consider anyone in their groups a misfit. Salman then turned his attention to Yung and suggested that the contestant may not be fitting into his current group dynamic. Yung. In whose group are you a misfit? You all live in this house. But you all can't see, and everyone else can see, that Yung, in this group, is a misfit, Salman said. He further said that Yungs association with the group could be affecting his progress in the show. His growth is stopping. We saw an extremely positive person here, when he came on stage, Salman said. Mahhi also agreed with Salmans observation, saying that Yung had changed since entering the house. He doesn't understand where he is going, but when he came, he was a different boy, and now he has changed completely, she said. When Salman asked Amrapali whether she agreed with the assessment, she said she did not. Mahhi then offered her perspective on Yungs current behaviour. Sir, he is lost in brotherhood. He is lost in brotherhood and friendship. That is exactly my point, she said. Salman concluded the discussion by suggesting that Yungs housemates should focus on ensuring that he does not lose the positivity he displayed when he entered the show. That means, you guys, need to take care of Yung's positivity, he said. When you want to do something, you just do it. I was true to myself and my conviction. Agar mujhe nahin gaana hai, toh mujhe nahin gaana hai. I felt I wanted to go away from here. Of course, I was upset with the whole situation with all the labels and everything. She added, I was not getting gratification as an artiste. I am not just a playback singer. I need gratification as an artist. I felt playback singers were treated badly. They were relegated to the position behind. Actually, its the voice that makes the song a hit, quite honestly. Essentially, I am still the star of my song. But thats the way it worked in those days. And I was a bit defiant and cheeky. I was not politically correct. Did she have a long thought before taking the step? Alisha Chinai revealed, No. I just said, Thats it. I have had enough. When asked whether music composers contacted her about her decision, she said, Yes, though I dont remember who all called me. But I just told them, I dont want to work. Actually, what also happened was that since Made In India was such a big hit, I had no time to sing in Bollywood. I was on tour all the time. The next 5 years after Made In India, I spent doing so many shows. There, I was a star. Here, I was just a playback singer. The shows were doing fabulously well. I became a star in my own right. And it continues to be a classic. She further said, My entire journey as an actor is about representing the women I have grown up amidst, I have played with, I have gone to school with, college with, women in my family and today they are the reason why I have found my presence in this big industry which was definitely not a part of my planning.
