During the conversation, he recalled a heartbreaking incident involving a young moviegoers comment on Dilip Kumars performance in Qila (1998). Umesh Mehra said, Qila marked Dilip saabs return to acting after almost a decade. Woh acting toh nahin bhoole the lekin log unko bhool chuke the. We, the people of the industry, knew who Dilip Kumar is. But the public had forgotten him. He continued, Theres a miserable incident which happened in front of me. The youngsters had no idea who Dilip Kumar was. I was in a theatre to check the audience reaction and hear what the audience is talking about the film. During the interval, I saw this young kid discussing the film with his father. The kid remarked, Papa, yeh toh Shah Rukh Khan ki copy kar raha hai! Umesh Mehra added, Woh bacche ka comment aaj bhi mere kaano mein bajta hai. Yeh kitne dukh ki baat hai. So, I guess its important to keep doing films. Only then youll be visible to the public. And it's not like Dilip saab was short of film offers. Directors aur producers ki line lagi rehti thi. I guess he had his reasons. Qila starred Dilip Kumar in a double role and also featured Rekha, Mamta Kulkarni, Mukul Dev, Smita Jaykar and Gulshan Grover. The 1998 mystery thriller marked Dilip Kumars final film appearance before his death on July 7, 2021. In the film, he played an evil landowner who is murdered, as well as his twin brother, a court judge who sets out to investigate the killing. Filmmaker and actor Farhan Akhtar has revealed that one of the most memorable phrases in the title song of Dil Chahta Hai almost did not make it into the film. Speaking with Anupama Chopra, Akhtar said he had serious reservations about the words chamkile din in the title track, and that he was hoping the phrase would be dropped even while the song was being recorded. Recalling the writing process, Akhtar said, I saw advertising chamkila, chamkila. Im like, yeah, this is just not right. Javed Akhtar, who wrote the lyrics for the song, was not willing to let the word go. He argued that its unfamiliarity was exactly what made it effective. Hes like, please, this will be the USP of the song, Akhtar recalled. This word is not used in any other song. It will be a new word, a new way to describe friendship. Akhtar eventually agreed, though his reservations continued through the recording process. I had a problem with it when it was being recorded and being sung, he said. Every time chamkile din was said, my toes were curling in my shoes. Javed Akhtar stood by his decision, and the word remained in the song. Twenty-five years later, the phrase is closely associated with the Dil Chahta Hai title track and the films depiction of friendship. Akhtar noted that although he directed the film, he chose to trust his fathers instinct over his own in this instance, a decision that shaped one of the songs defining lines. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the period drama is produced by Aamir Khan. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kanikka Kapur opened up about her memorable and hilarious first professional interaction with Aamir Khan during her Batwara 1947 audition, her familys emotional connection with Partition and a lot more. Kanikka Kapur said, I met Aamir sir during the premiere of Dono (2023). For Batwara 1947, I went through a series of auditions, and my second-last audition took place in his office. He wasnt present initially. However, just as Raj sir (Rajkumar Santoshi) began my audition, Aamir sir walked in. Now, even when youre performing a scene, from the corner of your eye, you do come to know ki koi chal ke aaya hai. So, I could see that he had entered and was observing us with rapt attention. I was scared as well as excited. I kept telling myself, Kanikka, dont break your flow. Concentrate on the scene! He soon left. Later, a unit member told me that Aamir sir had said to Raj sir, Whos this girl? Shes good, shes good! When asked whether shell go to cinema halls to gauge audience reactions on August 14, the day of release, Kanikka confessed, I have no idea what I am going to do (laughs). If theres a premiere, Ill definitely go for it. My whole family is in Delhi. So, maybe Ill go with my best friends to watch the film in a theatre in Mumbai with the audience. Kanikka Kapur then spoke about her familys excitement for the film, I live in a joint family with my grandparents, parents, my younger sister and a dog (smiles). My mother is always excited for all my projects. But for Batwara 1947, my grandparents are the most excited. They had experienced the time of Partition and had to migrate from the present-day Pakistan. My grandmother belonged to Lahore while my grandfather was from Lyallpur. My grandfather is 89. Even today, he gets nightmares while remembering the horrors of partition. At that time, the rioters had attacked his bus but thankfully, he survived. Hence, more than me, hes quite intrigued and excited to see the film. Kanikka added, My grandmother asked me to send the poster of the film. She said Ill post it on my WhatsApp kitty group! Seeing their excitement makes me very happy (smiles). Future plans When asked about her forthcoming projects, Kanikka Kapur revealed, There are one or two projects that are yet to release. I have also been getting some very nice scripts and audition opportunities ever since the trailer of Batwara 1947 was released. Thats a great start. Kanikka Kapur has worked across all three mediums films, web and television. Will she now concentrate more on films, or would she like to continue dabbling in all mediums? Kanikka replied, When I moved to Mumbai, my aim was to work in commercial Hindi films. All the projects I have done so far have proved to be of great help. TV, especially, has been a boon. Most of the people who follow me do so because they saw me on television. I guess thats because TV penetrates even the smallest of towns. I understood the power and reach of television after working in the medium and seeing my follower count increase because of it. Hence, I am glad that I worked across all platforms. She added, Now, I have got this opportunity with Batwara 1947. The intention, of course, is to do films. But theres no hard-and-fast rule that I wont do TV or web. The second season of The Traitors has started with high drama, unexpected eliminations and accusations among the contestants. Hosted by Karan Johar, the reality show returned with its first three episodes, introducing viewers to a game filled with suspicion and betrayal. Comedian Munawar Faruqui became one of the biggest talking points after he was eliminated during the first Circle of Shaq. During the first round, Munawar openly accused Mallika Sherawat of being a traitor. However, his strategy raised suspicions among several contestants, who felt that he was behaving like a traitor himself. As the voting began, Munawar received the highest number of votes and was eliminated from the game. Produced by Gaurav Verma under his newly launched production banner, Avanika Films, it is co-presented by Phars Films, and directed by Apoorv Singh Karki of Sirf Ek Banda Kaafi Hai (2023) fame. We have now learned that Prem Keetanu is an official remake of the Malayalam film, Premalu (2024). A source told Bollywood Hungama, Premalu is one of those rare films that received near-unanimous appreciation from audiences across age groups and tastes. Gaurav Verma felt that the film had immense potential to connect with Hindi-speaking audiences as well. Hence, he began the process of acquiring the remake rights and managed to secure them last year. Once the rights were in place, he assembled the team, following which the film went on floors. As per the official statement, Prem Keetanu is a youthful comedy that explores friendship, heartbreak, aspirations and the everyday struggles faced by young people. The story revolves around a group of boys Jinko college main na marks mile, na ummeed, na pyar, kuch mila to sirf dost aur khoob sare heartbreaks. Through their experiences, the film aims to present a humorous yet relatable take on young India, particularly the way friendships and disappointments shape life during the formative college years. Before establishing his own banner, Gaurav Verma worked as an independent producer for Red Chillies, where he was associated with films including Darlings, Bhakshak, Jawan and Badla. The opening event brought together actors, filmmakers and artistes from across the country, setting the stage for a festival celebrating the diversity and global reach of Indian storytelling. For newcomer Nitish Sharma, his journey to Nitesh Tiwaris much-awaited Ramayana took an unexpected turn. After facing several rejections and being replaced in a major film, Sharma auditioned for the role of Lakshman. Although he did not eventually get the part, his performance impressed the filmmaker, who offered him the role of Shatrughn in the epic. In an exclusive conversation with Mid-Day, Nitish opened up about his journey, working with Ranbir Kapoor and the criticism surrounding the films casting. Recalling the difficult phase that eventually led him to Ramayana, Nitish said that he had gone through hundreds of auditions before finally landing a major role in a big film in 2023. However, he was later replaced by a senior actor. The setback left him disappointed, but he found comfort in reading the Ramcharitmanas. I was trying to find peace by reading the sacred book. When I was reading the Bharat Milap scene, I received a call from Mukesh Chhabra's office saying that Nitesh Tiwari was making a pilot film of Ramayana and they wanted to test me for Lakshman. So I did, he recalled. During the audition, Nitish was asked to perform scenes as Lakshman before Nitesh Tiwari asked him to play Ram. His performance impressed the director, who assured him that he would be part of the main film. Nitish was eventually cast as Shatrughn, while Lakshman is being played by Ravie Dubey. Explaining why he was not selected as Lakshman, Nitish said, For the actual film, it was clear that in every character there would be big stars. And in such a big-scale movie, there are many things involved. But I have zero complaints about it. Nitish also spoke about his experience of working with Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Ram. He praised the actors humility and professionalism, particularly the way he continued giving cues to co-stars even after finishing his own scenes. Whenever we were shooting together, the way he gave all the cues to me, even when his scene was over, was amazing. He always gives his cues by himself to every actor, no matter if it is 10 times, 12 times or 15 times. He treats everyone with humility, he said. Addressing criticism of Ranbirs casting, Nitish said, It is actually very sad that people judge someone by just one look. Ranbir is the greatest actor we have in this industry right now. After watching the movie, I am telling you, they will praise Ranbir as Ram. No one could have done it better than RK. He also defended Sai Pallavi, who plays Sita, amid criticism of her appearance and casting. Sai, she looks divine in real life. She is the best casting for Sita. There are many trolls about her as well. But that is how a 99 per cent Indian beauty looks like, he said. Nitish remains confident that Ramayana will connect strongly with audiences. I am very sure that Ramayana will create magic once again, just like it did in 1987 with Ramanand Sagar, he concluded.
