The return of Practical Magic brings back some of the franchise's most beloved characters while introducing a new generation of Owens women. For director Susanne Bier, bringing together returning stars and new talent was one of the most rewarding aspects of making Practical Magic 2. Speaking about Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, who return as the iconic Aunts, Bier described the experience as an enormous privilege. Dianne and Stockard, it was the biggest honour ever. They are beautiful human beings and they are beautiful in the movie. I almost can't see them without those gorgeous costumes. And there is a kindness to both of them. A kindness and a sharpness. It's like they're incredibly kind, but they also have an edge, and that mixture is wonderful. There's something incredibly dignified, but also very poetic about both of them. The sequel also expands the Owens legacy through Kylie and Antonia, played by Maisie and Joey. Bier was looking for performers who could bring strength, confidence and individuality to the next generation. When we were talking about Kylie and Antonia, it was like, who are two real badass young women that can fill those shoes? Maisie and Joey had that in different ways. She adds, They both have a strong feminine side to them, but you also have a sense that you do not want to cross them. They will do what it takes, both of them. They have very fierce will and a confident sense of self. I think we were very much looking for that. They're very different and they are gorgeous and interesting and surprising. I don't really know where to stop with either of them! The two of them were great together. Bier also found a distinctive dynamic in the film's male characters. Lee Pace, who plays Professor Ian Wright, brings what she describes as a rare combination of confidence, humour and sex appeal. Lee has that balancewhich is quite rare in a way in a manof being quite comfortable in his own skin and being very, very handsome and maybe not really caring that much about it. She continues, There's a kind of generosity in Lee Pace where you think he's quite comfortable being the love interest, being Professor Ian Wright. He does play what could be thought of as a traditionally female part in a wayhes the leads love interest. And he does that with quite a lot of humor and quite a lot of sexiness. And he's enjoying it. And I think that that's why it works so wonderfully wellbecause he's actually having a lot of fun with it. Xolo Mariduea's Gideon, meanwhile, was cast for his ability to balance charm with emotional openness. With Xolo, it was that balance again of having a guy who is sexy, cute, but also kind and also, in some way, more audacious than Kylie is. Bier explains, Hes not scared of telling her he loves her, and he's not scared of any of that. But because of this ingrained thing that she can't even articulatethat I'm not really allowed to love anybodyshe is so much more reserved. And he's quite free with that. We wanted somebody who could play that without losing his integrity. And Xolo did that beautifully. With its returning icons and younger generation, Bier sees the ensemble as an important part of carrying the Practical Magic legacy forward. Mitch McConnells dramatic return to the Senate floor has sparked a fresh online firestorm after the 84-year-old Republican was seen being brought into the chamber in a wheelchair following a 92-day absence. There is no evidence supporting those claims, but the speculation has added another layer to the intense online reaction surrounding McConnells return.

Four of a family charred to death, 2 critically injured in fridge blast in K'taka's Belagavi house
Digital Desk | Belagavi, Sep 15 (IANS) At least four people were burnt alive, and two others suffered severe injuries after a fire broke out following an alleged refrigerator blast caused by an electrical short circuit at a house in the Chauhan Galli area of Karnataka's Belagavi city in the early hours of Tuesday. According to police, the incident occurred after the family had celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi at home on Monday and gone to sleep. The preliminary investigation suggests that an electrical short circuit triggered the fire late at night. The refrigerator allegedly exploded shortly after the fire broke out, and the flames quickly engulfed the entire house. The deceased have been identified as 65-year-old Gajanan Dhamone, 21-year-old Roshan Dhamone, 45-year-old Sharada Dhamone and 45-year-old Bharati Dhamone. Priya Dhamone, 28, and Ganga Dhamone, 25, who sustained severe burn injuries, are undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Police said both suffered burns covering around 70 to 80 per cent of their bodies, and their condition remains critical. The family was living in a shed-like structure, where the victims were sleeping together when the fire broke out. The intensity of the blaze was such that the refrigerator was reduced to what police described as the size of a small box, while household articles were completely destroyed in the fire. The incident has shocked the local community, with residents expressing disbelief over the tragedy that occurred shortly after the family had celebrated the festival. The Dhamone family worked as labourers. Belagavi Police Commissioner visited the spot and inspected the scene. The jurisdictional market police have taken up a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the refrigerator blast. On May 9, one person died, and four others were critically injured in a fire tragedy in the Nagarbhavi locality in Bengaluru. The blaze suspected to be triggered by a short circuit inside the hotel. The fire spread rapidly and soon engulfed the staff rooms located on the upper floor. As fire broke out suddenly during night, the five staff members sleeping on upper floors were unable escape and got trapped inside. In 2025, a devastating early-morning fire at a bar-cum-restaurant in the Kumbaara Sangha building resulted in five deaths due to suffocation, leading to the arrest of the building owners for severe safety and ventilation violations.

'Enna Vilai' director Sajeev Pazhoor: I don't know why they have given my film a U/A certificate!
Digital Desk | Chennai, Sep 15 (IANS) Director Sajeev Pazhoor has now expressed surprise over the fact that the Censor Board has cleared his eagerly awaited next film, 'Enna Vilai', featuring Nimisha Sajayan and Karunaas in the lead, for release with a 'U/A' certificate. Sajeev Pazhoor believes his film is a clean entertainer and should have been given a 'U' certificate. Participating in a press conference in Chennai, Sajeev Pazhoor's attention was drawn to the fact that the Censor Board had cleared his film with an U/A certificate. Responding to this question, the director, who is best known for having penned the story of the critically acclaimed superhit Malayalam film 'Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum', said, Even I don't know why they have given a U/A certificate for our film. In fact, we made a demand for a U certificate with the censor officer and I even had an argument. Sajeev Pazhoor went on to say, This is clean 'U' film. There are no objectionable sequences in my film like people consuming alcohol. All the films I have made so far have all got U certificates. I don't know how this film comes under the U/A category. The film, which has already garnered praise by getting officially selected in around 30 film festivals around the world even before its release, is set to hit screens here on September 17 this year. It will raise a question on the price of dignity of a poor man. The film has won numerous awards, including the award for the Best Feature Film at the Mannheim Arts and Film Festival in Germany. It may be recalled that the makers of the film had chosen to express their gratitude to the village where the film was predominantly shot by getting the entire village to release the first look of their film. Instead of inviting a star to unveil the film's first look, the makers had returned to Paalam village in Dhanushkodi, where a major portion of the film was shot, and entrusted the honour to the very people who had welcomed them with open arms throughout the filming process. The villagers, who had become an inseparable part of the journey behind 'Enna Vilai', gathered together to unveil the film's first look in a heartfelt celebration. Sources present on the occasion had said that what unfolded was not merely a promotional event, but a tribute to a community whose warmth, hospitality and unwavering support left an indelible mark on the entire team. Produced by Kalamaya Films under the banner of Githesh V, 'Enna Vilai' has been written and directed by Sajeev Pazhoor. The socio-political family thriller stars Karunaas and Nimisha Sajayan in the lead, alongside Y. Gee. Mahendran, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Mohan Ram, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan, Kavithalayaa Krishna, Deepa Shankar, Mottai Rajendran, Nakkalites Kavi and a strong ensemble cast. Speaking about the decision to have the first look released by the villagers of Paalam, producer Githesh V had said, Every film has a beginning, but very few get the opportunity to begin with gratitude. While many first looks are unveiled by celebrities or through digital campaigns, we wanted ours to be introduced by the people who quietly became a part of our journey. The villagers of Paalam welcomed us with immense warmth and made us feel at home throughout the shoot. We felt it was only right that this honour belonged to them. More than a promotional event, this was our heartfelt way of saying 'thank you. Director Sajeev Pazhoor had, on the occasion, said, As filmmakers, we often borrow places to tell our stories. But sometimes, those places and the people living there become a part of the story itself. During the making of 'Enna Vilai', the people of Paalam embraced us like family. Before the film reaches audiences across the world, we wanted it to first belong to the people who stood beside us from the very beginning. This first-look launch was not just an event, it was an emotion we wanted to cherish forever.

'Might be little bit of hostility': Cummins on Australia's first SA tour after Sandpaper gate
Digital Desk | New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) Australia Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins feels that Australia might have to face a little bit of hostility when the Aussies head to South Africa for their first Test tour since the infamous Sandpaper gate incident in 2018. The Aussies will now be touring South Africa for three ODIs and as many Tests. While they have previously played white-ball cricket in South Africa, this is their first red-ball series since that 2018 incident. While Australia are currently in Zimbabwe for three ODIs, Cummins will be joining the team in South Africa for the one-dayers before the Tests begin on October 9. There might be a little bit of hostility, Cummins admitted during the Keepin it Cricket podcast. (But) it can't be louder than an Ashes series Birmingham, the Hollies Stand at Edgbaston, that gets pretty rowdy. Cummins opened up about his previous experience playing in South Africa on white-ball tours and being the standout performer in the 2018 Test series. As long as I've been to South Africa, there are some parts of the crowd that get stuck in, but I reckon we've seen it all before. And most importantly, I'm captain, so I'm in the middle; I'm not near the fence! However, he believes that the dust would have settled by now, as focus will remain on cricket once the first ball is thrown. It (Sandpapergate) was kind of really spoken up (in past series), and it was almost a bit underwhelming, Cummins said about the reaction from Proteas fans. Everyone moves on. The good thing is, three Tests, you get stuck into the cricket, and everyone just worries about the cricket pretty quickly. Im sure therell be some rowdy people in the crowd, and some articles or some media bring up stuff. But our groups moved on, he added. Australia have six survivors from that infamous 1-3 loss to the Proteas, as the ball-tampering issue put Australian cricket in very dark clouds, leading to bans of the likes of Steve Smith and David Warner for a year and Cameron Bancroft for nine months. Meanwhile, the Aussie skipper also spoke on the recent loss to Bangladesh in Darwin, their first to the Bangla Tigers at home, as he brushed aside the talk of a lack of preparation for the series. Whether that was an Ashes Test or a Bangladesh series, I think we would have prepped exactly the same. Of course you look at it after the series, but I actually thought we were in a really good spot; everyone fit, firing. He admitted that the team was not at its best in Darwin. I just dont think we played very well. I dont think it was a lack of prep. I just dont think we were at our best, and Bangladesh played brilliantly, and didnt really let us in, he added.
Varanasi weaver's heartfelt birthday gift for PM Modi: A silk-thread portrait with mother
Digital Desk | New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modis birthday, a Varanasi-based weaver has prepared a unique artistic tribute depicting the Prime Minister receiving his late mother Heeraben Modis blessings. Weaver Sarvesh Kumar Srivastava has created a special portrait of Prime Minister Modi and his mother using pure Indian silk threads. The artwork shows Heeraben blessing PM Modi, capturing an emotional moment between the mother and son through the intricate traditional craft of Kashi. According to Srivastava, the portrait has been created using the traditional Uchand Kala, an ancient art form believed to have links to the era of Lord Ram. The intricate artwork took around one-and-a-half months to complete and showcases the craftsmanship and weaving traditions for which Varanasi is renowned. The portrait is being sent to Prime Minister Modi as a special birthday gift. Srivastava has previously sent Banarasi sarees as gifts to the Prime Minister on his birthdays. Speaking about his creation, Srivastava said the artwork was his way of paying tribute to the Prime Minister and preserving a representation of his bond with his mother through the traditional art of Varanasi. Our Prime Minister is a great personality for India. If we say that we gained independence again in 2014, it would not be an exaggeration, because the work done under his leadership after 2014 by his government has been remarkable and highly commendable. I made a saree, and the portrait of PM Modis mother giving blessings to him is a kind of work that can be framed and preserved, he told IANS. The weaver said the portrait was created with the hope that it would reach the Prime Minister and remain preserved as a distinctive piece of traditional Indian craftsmanship. The artwork also highlights the cultural and artistic legacy of Kashi, where generations of artisans and weavers have preserved traditional techniques while adapting them to contemporary themes. By depicting the Prime Minister and his mother through silk threads, the artist has combined a personal tribute with the regions centuries-old weaving heritage. The special creation is expected to be presented to PM Modi on the occasion of his birthday, offering a distinctive gift that brings together Varanasis renowned silk craftsmanship, traditional art and a deeply personal mother-son theme.

Pinarayi Vijayan era under fire as CPI(M) meet on Kerala poll debacle reaches its sharpest point
Digital Desk | Kozhikode, Sep 15 (IANS) The CPI(M)s extended state committee meeting entered its concluding day on Tuesday with the party facing an unusually open and sharp internal questioning of the leadership style that has dominated Kerala for nearly three decades, with former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan clearly at the centre of the criticism. The three-day meeting, convened to review the Lefts crushing electoral defeat, has witnessed an unprecedented degree of criticism from district committees and delegates. Much of it has been directed, directly or indirectly, at the style of functioning that evolved around Vijayan, who first became state secretary in 1998 and remained in that position until 2014 before serving as Chief Minister from 2016 to 2026. The Kollam district committee reportedly bluntly linked the decline of communist parties elsewhere in the world to the arrogance of their leaders, while the Kannur committee said the decade of LDF rule had weakened the organisation. The 2026 Assembly election campaign claims that there was no alternative to the LDF, was also criticised as having worked against the party. The criticism assumes added significance because the Central Committee report itself had acknowledged serious organisational and political shortcomings. Delegates have demanded that the party should make its mistakes and the corrective measures it proposes to take clear to both the people and its cadre. Though Vijayan has not been the principal speaker in the discussions, the thrust of the criticism is unmistakably linked to the political style associated with him. State secretary M.V. Govindan has also come under criticism, particularly over the party organisation and its failure to arrest the electoral decline. All eyes are now on Govindans reply to the discussions. His response is expected to indicate how the state leadership intends to address the unusually candid criticism without allowing the debate to turn into an open leadership challenge. The political reality, however, appears to favour continuity. Despite the intensity of the criticism, there is little indication that the meeting is preparing the ground for an immediate change at the top. A dramatic leadership change involving either Vijayan or Govindan would require a major political intervention that does not appear imminent. For now, the focus is on whether Govindan can acknowledge the concerns raised by the delegates, defend the leadership where necessary and offer a credible course correction. The extended state committee will conclude with a massive public rally in Kozhikode in the evening. The party has claimed that over a lakh people will participate. The rally may provide the leadership an opportunity to project unity. But the debate inside the meeting has already ensured that the question of the Vijayan era and its legacy can no longer be kept outside the partys post-poll reckoning.
