EXCLUSIVE: Kunal Kemmu admits, I was slightly intimidated by Preity Zinta when I first met her
Kunal Kemmu has spoken about his experience of directing Preity Zinta in Vibe during an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama. For Kemmu, the collaboration was also a new experience as he was directing an actor he had grown up watching on the big screen. Talking about his first interaction with Preity, Kemmu said, I never expected it to be easy. She is someone you grew up watching, loving as an audience. I had never met her in life. So, for me she is a star who I have seen on the big screen and from far away. I have always been Googly-eyed and said, Oh my God, thats Preity Zinta. Now I am going to tell her what to do. So, I was also slightly intimidated to be honest right from the first time I met her. Kemmu also spoke about Preitys personality and how their conversations would sometimes take them away from the work they had initially planned. He said, She is a very fun person, actually. She will talk to you about everything under the sun. And suddenly, you will be like, Why was I here? Oh, I was here to pitch the film. Over time, however, Kemmu and Preity developed an understanding of each others working styles. He added, Over a period of time, we understood each others sensibilities and how to reach out to each other. I really enjoyed this process because this was the other thing that I got to learn on this film where I am working with someone who is not just a senior actor but also someone who has been a star. So, it was my first interaction of directing a star in that sense. For Kemmu, Vibe therefore became an opportunity to learn as a director while working with an actor he had admired for years. The film also brought a different professional equation between the two, with Kemmu also stepping behind the camera and Preity taking on the role of the actor. Sonal Chauhan, who is currently seen as Mumtaz Bibi in Mirzapur: The Movie, has spoken about her journey in the film industry, including her career phase after her debut film Jannat. The actor also discussed how she landed the role in the Mirzapur franchise, working with Ravi Kishan and the age gap between their characters. Sonal revealed that her association with Mirzapur happened unexpectedly. She had initially met director Gurmeet Singh for a different project. During their conversation, he mentioned that the casting for Mirzapur had already been completed, but later told her about a character that was still available. When I met my director, Gurmeet Singh, I did not meet him for Mirzapur. It was for something else. In that conversation, he told me that Mirzapur's casting has been done and they are going on tour soon. Ten minutes into that meeting, he said, Well, actually, you know what, there is this one character which is still remaining. So, I honestly feel that it is just destiny, and Mumtaz BB was meant to happen to me, she recalled. Sonal said she knew she was entering a largely male-dominated world when she signed the project but did not expect the response to Mumtaz. When I signed Mirzapur, I knew that I was entering a male-dominated world. I honestly did not expect that Mumtaz would be received so beautifully, she said. The actor also praised Ravi Kishan, who plays Babban in the film. He is a Member of Parliament. He is a superstar. But when he is on set, all he brings is honesty. And that is what the audience connects with, she said. Addressing the age gap between their characters, Sonal said the makers did not attempt to hide it. We did not try to show anywhere that there is no age gap. It was absolutely clear that there is an age gap. She added that stories associated with gangsters, where older men are involved with younger women, were taken into account while developing Mumtaz and Babban's relationship. Sonal also reflected on the challenges she faced after Jannat. Although the film and her character Zoya remain an important part of her career, she admitted that she was too young and inexperienced to navigate the industry at the time. After I did Jannat, I was immature. I was very young at that time. I did not have anyone to guide me in the film industry. I didn't know how to work here. So, I didn't get a lot of offers or the kind of work that I wanted to do at that time, she recalled. She later explored opportunities in the South Indian film industry. While she feels her journey did not unfold exactly as she had imagined, Sonal said she has no regrets about the decisions she made. Reflecting on the difficult phases, she added, There have been challenging times. There have been frustrations. There have been times where I didn't know what was going to happen. In a conversation with Soha Ali Khan, Haasan opened up about entering a new decade, whether age has changed the professional environment around her and how her approach to careers has been influenced by women who continued to evolve well beyond conventional timelines. Speaking about what she finds exciting about this phase of her life, Haasan said, The thing I find exciting is maybe it was just my good fortune that I always looked at careers of women being much more interesting. Sooraj Barjatya, Himesh Reshammiya, Ayushmann Khurrana, Sharvari and producer Mahaveer Jain attended the title song launch of their film, Yeh Prem Mol Liya, at Mumbais iconic Royal Opera House. The kind-hearted and humble Sooraj Barjatya explained why the theatre was chosen to launch the song and also spoke about his film. Sooraj Barjatya said, I remember my school bus passing through Royal Opera House when I was a child. It was a huge cinema hall then. Bade hoardings lagte the and we used to wait 6 months to book the hall. It was a theatre meant for the whole family. I clearly remember watching Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) thrice in this cinema hall! Hence, which better venue than to launch the music of a family film than this family theatre (smiles)? He also explained why he prefers to make clean family entertainers, I was 10-12 when a writer came to meet my grandfather (Rajshri founder, Tarachand Barjatya). He narrated several film ideas, including that of Bhai Ho Toh Aisa (1972). After listening to every story, my grandfather would tell him, 'Super hit hai par mere kaam ki nahin hai'! When the writer left, I asked him, 'Jab kahani superhit hai toh hum banate kyun nahin?'. He smiled and took me outside the room, where the Saraswati emblem, which is also our logo, was placed. He told me, Main chahta hoon ki hamare yahaan aisi film banein jinme Saraswati ka vaas ho! There were claps in the hall as Sooraj continued, Today, my tauji, taya ji, chacha, chachi, everyone is seated here. If they are happy, then I feel their blessings are also with me! After the song was launched, Sooraj Barjatya continued, Somewhere, I feel complete now. Even after so many years, people come to watch my cinema. My daughter and my son-in-law are here with their family. My sons are there, my in-laws are there and I even have two granddaughters at home. Toh ab main kuch dena chahta hoon. Honestly, this is one of the most progressive films of mine, while also keeping my values intact! Through this film, I want to convey how different generations can stay together. He raised laughs as he added, I sometimes laugh that goodness dikhane mein main aur goodness karna chahta hoon! Toh woh mere apne issues hain. The actress spoke about Kemmus approach to direction as well as the challenge of portraying her character, Madam H. Talking about Kunals working style, Preity said, Kunals vibe changes with the scene. Its a fun vibe but he is a tough taskmaster. He is not like the funny guy you see in the scene. He is very particular about what he wants; he wants it like that. He is very structured, which is also very good as there is no room for confusion. Preity also discussed the different shades of Madam H and how she approached the character. She explained, Madam H has so many different surs. There is no linear thought process for her. So, for me, I found it little difficult to understand where she was going. So, I just put myself in his thoughts. I had a very different understanding on how I would approach Madam H. Her comments also highlight the difference between Kemmus public image and his approach behind the camera. While he is known for his comic roles and has often been seen in light-hearted characters, Preity described a more structured side of him as a filmmaker. According to her, his clarity about what he wanted from a scene helped ensure that there was little room for confusion during the process.
