Priyadarshan on bringing a different Akshay Kumar to Haiwaan, Every film should not look the same
Ahead of the much-awaited thriller Haiwaan, National Award-winning director Priyadarshan revealed that he deliberately kept his actors away from his earlier film Oppam while developing the new adaptation. According to the filmmaker, Haiwaan should not be approached as a recreation of the original, but as a fresh interpretation of its core story. He wanted his actors to build their characters on their own, without being influenced by the performances in the earlier film. He said, I never show any of my films when I'm remaking them. I'll never show them to anyone. Because that film will have no connection with this film. And also, if you show it to them, they will try to imitate those actors. And I don't want to do that. The director's approach to Haiwaan also extended to its casting, particularly when it came to its two leading men. Priyadarshan revealed that Saif Ali Khan had been his first choice from the very beginning for the role of Shyam. Akshay Kumar's casting, however, came about in a more unexpected way, with the actor himself expressing his interest in playing Haiwaan. Priyadarshan saw the opportunity to present Akshay in a darker and more villainous avatar, something he felt would give the film and the actor a distinctly different flavour. He said, That's the difference, because every film should not look the same. So I thought I could use Akshay Kumar in a different way. So, this is one opportunity I got and I decided, Okay, let me work with him in a different role. Haiwaan is produced by KVN Productions and Thespian Films by Venkat K. Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles, along with Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Sharib Hashmi in pivotal roles. When Oni Sen was first approached to direct Operation Safed Sagar, Netflix Indias highly acclaimed military action series, he was initially skeptical about taking on the job, precisely because of its enormous scale. The show had all the ingredients of a sprawling war drama, fighter jets, aerial combat, military operations and the India-Pakistan conflict. However, what ultimately drew him in was not the scale but the human story underneath the combat. Spectacle alone has never been enough to move me. Throughout my career across advertising films and long-format storytelling, I have always tried to focus on the raw, intricate spectrum of human emotion. Stories are only as powerful as the feelings they evoke, says Sen in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama. Coming off the back of two seasons of Asur, Sen needed a project that would demand something entirely different from him a completely new canvas to explore. Although he was initially skeptical, everything shifted when creator Abhijeet Singh Parmar began walking him through the details of the script and his vision. Beneath the backdrop of warfare lay an extraordinarily rich tapestry of human experience. He realised this wasnt just a story about a war fought on borders; it was about the silent, devastating wars fought within ourselves. It was a study in brotherhood, deep love, crushing loss and quiet longing. It was about raw anger, the painful theft of innocence and the unbelievable strength it takes to rise from the ashes of grief. It dug into the darkest corners obsession, greed, deceit, betrayal and total helplessness while holding up a mirror to the quiet vulnerability present in even the toughest of heroes. The moment I saw that core, my mandate as a director became crystal clear: my job wasnt just to depict events but to make the audience feel every single one of those emotions right alongside our characters. I knew that this was the story I would love to tell, reveals Sen. That philosophy eventually became the guiding principle behind whats arguably Netflix Indias most ambitious production in its 10 years of existence. The show was mounted on an unusually large scale. Hundreds of people were interviewed for research, real IAF officers were consulted throughout its making, and real aircraft were used for ground sequences, while the aerial combat sequences were carefully pre-visualised and reviewed by aviation experts. The shooting ran for 115 days across 11 cities and more than 100 locations, including real operational Indian Air Force bases. But getting the scale right was only one part of the challenge. In a series filled with MiG-21s, high-altitude sorties and technical operations, Sen and his team ensured that the pilots, officers and their families remained the emotional centre. There is a core philosophy that I believe in: thrill is temporary, but feeling is forever, says the director. A grand spectacle might hold an audiences attention for a moment, but it is the emotional resonance that would eventually leave a mark. From the very beginning, I knew that while our aerial and ground combat and high-stakes drama had to be executed with flawless precision and technical perfection, those were actually the backdrop. The series will be loved and remembered only because of its human stories and emotions. Therefore, from the writing stage, every action sequence was built around an emotional anchor, and every tactical decision had to stem from a characters internal struggle, vulnerability or sacrifice. The question always was, How is this moment or scene affecting the character emotionally? By grounding the epic scale of the story in quiet, deeply personal human truths, we aimed to create something that doesnt just entertain viewers in the moment but truly lives in their hearts. To authentically portray real IAF officers and political figures, the actors underwent an extensive preparation process that went far beyond traditional rehearsals. Long before shooting began, Sen spent long hours in deep conversation with the actors, discussing every characters internal world, their backstories and the weight they carried within the larger scope of the story. I worked closely with each actor to map out their characters emotional graph across the entire series, carefully calibrating their psychological trajectory from scene to scene. We debated every choice the pitch of a line, the physical projection of authority, and the subtle, unspoken beats striking a delicate balance where the performances remained grounded, human and authentic while still carrying the quiet power needed to elevate the onscreen drama, the director reveals. Sen and his team have indeed succeeded in getting the emotions and authenticity right, as Operation Safed Sagar has emerged as one of the successful titles for Netflix India. The show has received widespread love and acclaim for authentically bringing to life the untold chapter of the 1999 Kargil war a historic, high-altitude mission that altered the course of the India-Pakistan War. More importantly for Sen and his team, the series has received appreciation from Indian Air Force personnel and veterans for its portrayal of the people who lived through the conflict and the professional and personal challenges they faced. Through the making of the series, while we have spent a lot of time getting the craft right, we have tried our best to be authentic. Authentic in staging, in the science of flying, in the nuances of the Air Force, and in the tone of storytelling. I have worked hard to keep the performances restrained, poignant, and quiet, trusting that real human emotion doesnt need to shout to be felt. To see that trust repaid so generously has been deeply moving, says Sen. The response since the series was released has been overwhelming in the most beautiful, humbling way imaginable. Weve received messages from viewers across every generation and every corner of the country. Perhaps most meaningfully, the feedback from Indian Air Force personnel and veterans who recognised their own world, their subtle dignity, and the genuine depth of their experiences on screen has touched us beyond measure. Knowing that our dedication to truth resonated so deeply with both the public and the very officers who lived this history is the ultimate reward, the director shares. With Operation Safed Sagar turning out to be another success after the much-loved Asur, Oni Sen now finds himself at an interesting juncture in his career. But rather than immediately rushing into his next project, the filmmaker wants to take a break, and deservingly so, before deciding what he wants to explore next. However, Sen promises one thing: regardless of the scale of his next project, the human story will continue to be his starting point. Right now, I need to give myself a little time and space to process everything, to decompress, and to eventually figure out what I will do next. But if there is one thing this experience has reinforced for me, its where my heart truly lies as a storyteller. Whatever project I take on next wont be defined by the size of the canvas, the budget, or the sheer scale of the spectacle. It will always come back to human stories and human emotions the quiet, intimate truths that connect us all, Sen signs off. Gurdeep Mehndi is slowly and steadily making his mark as a singer and composer, carving an identity of his own beyond that of his father, Daler Mehndi, and uncle, Mika Singh. Recently, he released his latest single as a singer, Chan Mahi. He also features in the music video alongside Aditi Sharma, and its unique, cinematic visuals have been widely appreciated. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Gurdeep spoke about growing up while Daler Mehndi was at the peak of his phenomenal success, and a lot more. Two years ago, Gurdeep Mehndi got a chance to sing with his father on the recreated version of Dalers iconic song, Na Na Na Na Na Re, in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video (2024). Gurdeep said, It was officially our first-ever collaboration. It had always been my dream to sing with him. I was clear that I didnt want to ask my father or uncle for any favours until I reached that level, or until the producers, directors or audience themselves asked for it. Otherwise, it would be a case of ghar ki murgi dal barabar. I was lucky that T-Series wanted a fresh voice for Rajkummar Rao. They asked me to come on board. I thanked God that day! After all, it gave them a legitimate reason to have me on the song alongside my father. No one was happier than me because now, if you search for Na Na Na Na Na Re, my name is there too. Mera naam jud gaya hai, and now I can sing it haq se because I have actually sung it as well (smiles). Gurdeep then opened up about his childhood days, saying, Since I was very young, aur jab mujhe hosh bhi nahin tha, I had seen papa ji doing several shows even before he became famous. He used to perform in Delhi and was living the way he still lives today like a king! So, we always knew that papa ji was someone special. It was only when we got enrolled in school that we realized, aur bada hai maamla (laughs). Out of all his classic songs, Tunak Tunak Tun stands out. The music video featured only Daler Mehndi, appearing in multiple avatars, and was reportedly made at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crores, a huge amount at the time. When asked what the discussion was like within the Mehndi family and whether there were any apprehensions about mounting such an expensive music video, Gurdeep replied, Honestly, I wasnt aware of the financial aspects then, and Im not aware of them even now. But I do remember that, in those days, there was a perception that Indipop songs became hits because artists featured models and expensive cars in their videos. Unhone yeh baat apne dil pe le li. So, he decided, Main ek aisa video banaunga jisme koi nahin hoga. Sirf main rahunga. Na gaadi hongi, na models. He also incorporated the four elements earth, fire, water and air into the video. Gurdeep Mehndi continued, So, more than the money, for me, it was about the confidence with which he proved his point to everyone koi nahin use kiya, sirf main akela hoon. Even today, I strongly feel that Tunak Tunak Tun se badhiya gaana koi ho nahin sakta.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is set to headline Daayra, her upcoming film with Prithviraj Sukumaran, directed by filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. The film is scheduled to release on September 18, 2026. Ahead of its release, Kareena spoke about her approach to choosing projects, the kind of filmmakers she wanted to collaborate with and her reluctance to be confined to a particular genre or image. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kareena was asked about being at a stage in her career where she did not necessarily have to take up films simply because her friends were doing them or because a particular genre was popular. She was also asked what made her decide that a particular project was something she wanted to pursue. Kareena said that she was looking to work with directors who could challenge her creatively and push her to explore something different. I think, for me, at this stage, I want to work with good directors who will probably push me and challenge me to do something different. Also, like Meghna earlier said in your interview, that theres no formula for anything in our film industry. Like at this stage, you could do this or you know, theres no formula. She added that actors were often placed in certain boxes based on the kind of roles they had previously played. All these things, I think, are just people who kind of put you in that box. This is what you have to do. Kareena also addressed the expectations surrounding the kind of roles audiences want to see her in. She said that while people may expect her to continue doing comic or light-hearted films, she did not want to limit herself to one particular space. And I know that people want me to do a certain kind of role also, where theyre like, Okay, now we want to see her in this comic zone, in this kind of fun film. But Im like, an actor cant keep doing that also. So we have to kind of pick and choose. Talking about being more selective with her work, Kareena said, At this stage, its also about the fact that Im doing lesser work. But there are only a handful of five directors. I dont want to name them, but Im happy that Meghna is one of them. So then we have to look for the scripts. Kareena further spoke about her experience of working with Meghna and Prithviraj on Daayra. So I wanted to work with her, and Im happy that weve come together and Ive worked with Prithvi. I would love to work with him again in a full kind of thing. The actor also made it clear that she did not want age or career milestones to dictate the roles she should take on. I want to be working and look amazing and do those parts even when Im 75. Amid reports of rape and gender-based violence, the actor expressed concern over what she described as a growing sense of impunity, saying that such incidents were becoming an accepted reality in the society. WE HAVE A PROBLEM, Bhumi said. Rape and gender-based violence are becoming an accepted reality in our society. And that should terrify all of us. HOW IS THIS NOT A STATE OF EMERGENCY? A 16-year-old gang-raped. A 3-year-old sexually assaulted. And how many more cases remain unreported, unheard and unseen? How much is it going to take for us to call this an emergency? It is about the ideology that teaches entitlement over another person's body. TEACH OUR BOYS. DON'T CAGE OUR GIRLS. We cannot keep teaching girls how to dress, where to go and how to prepared violence, she stated. Pednekar said greater emphasis should be placed on teaching boys about consent, respect, equality, boundaries and accountability. She also called for stronger and faster legal action against perpetrators. IMPUNITY IS PART OF THE PROBLEM. Perpetrators need to fear the law. Justice cannot take years while survivors carry the consequences for a lifetime. We need-Fast-track courts, Time-bound investigations, Speedy judgments, Strong implementation of the law, she concluded. She further urged that the safety and dignity of women and children be treated as a national priority. Taapsee Pannu had often been associated with intense performances and hard-hitting stories, but the actor said she wanted to explore lighter genres, particularly romantic comedies. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Taapsee said she had been waiting for filmmakers to look beyond the strong, intense characters she had frequently been offered. While discussing her filmography ahead of Gandhari, Taapsee said she would love to take up a fun romantic comedy. Please tell people, have mercy, give me something light. I would love to see you in a rom-com. I would love to do it too. The actor said the industry often became comfortable associating actors with a particular genre after they found success in it. Theres a certain kind of creative imagination that our industry is not that good with, she said. When we see a certain actor good with a certain kind of roles and genres and worlds, we just want to play safe and keep casting that actor in the same world. Taapsee revealed that she had rejected several investigation dramas and action films after Baby and Naam Shabana because she did not want to repeat similar roles. I can't begin to tell you the number of films I have turned down investigation films that I have turned down, like a lot. Action films that I turned down after Naam Shabana and Baby until now, she added. Because it just felt like theres a creative bankruptcy where you cant imagine a person if you're calling someone a good actor, not me, if anybody, a good actor then please put the faith in that person to be able to perform range. She also said her filmography did not necessarily reflect her capabilities. Its not my fault if I am only offered 10 intense films, she said. I will choose the best out of it and present that, but it will still be a strong woman, intense film because that's the only genre that people have started imagining me [in]. Taapsee cited Manmarziyaan as an example of her ability to carry a romantic story. If today someone goes out to pitch a love story with me, people can't imagine it. They don't want to greenlight it because they feel like, Taapsee in a love story? It's very difficult to imagine. I don't understand, she asserted. She also spoke about her experience with comedy in Khel Khel Mein. I literally did Khel Khel Mein for me to have fun, she revealed. I knew there were seven of us on the table. I just get to have some fun is why I did that film. Taapsee credited director Mudassar Aziz for trusting her with comedy and said filmmakers needed to give her more opportunities to explore different genres. Meanwhile, Gandhari, directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, featured Taapsee as Bani, a mother whose daughter was abducted. The film also starred Ishwak Singh, Jatin Sarna, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Chhaya Kadam. Gandhari premiered on Netflix on September 3. The much-awaited thriller Haiwaan releases next Friday, September 11, and has already caught attention with its intriguing trailer and impressive star cast. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Shailaja Desai Fenn, one of the films producers, about its casting, the challenges of mounting the film and a lot more. At the very outset, she made it clear that Haiwaan offers much more than just thrills. She said, Haiwaan is a thriller, but its also a Priyadarshan film. Hence, it has all the elements emotions, humour, etc. in place. Its like a family entertainer. How did you get associated with Haiwaan? My husband, Satish Fenn, and I have been in the industry for more than 20-25 years. I started my career as a talent manager and continue to run that business successfully. We also produce ad films, so film production seemed like a natural progression for us. In 2024, we were shooting an ad for Kalyan Jewellers, which was directed by Priyan sir (director Priyadarshan). Thats how it all started. Priyan sir was very keen to make this film, and we joined hands to put it together. KVN Productions then came on board as the studio for the film, and we are very grateful to them. Later, Akshay sir and Saif sir also joined the project. Along the way, we also made a Malayalam film called Balan: The Boy, which released earlier this year. Thespian is a term used to describe someone accomplished in theatre or cinema. We are here to make good films and back the kind of cinema we truly believe in. Hence, Thespian Films seemed like the right name for our banner. Haiwaan stars Boman Irani, whom you have managed for a long time. Was it easy to convince him to sign the film? I have been with Boman sir since 2005. I just told him, Sir, you have to be me in my film! Thats all (laughs). Boman sir was gracious enough to say, Yes, of course. No questions asked (smiles). Hes family. How was it working with a talent like Akshay Kumar? It was an absolute pleasure. Akshay sir is somebody you really look up to when it comes to commitment. Hes always on time and knows exactly what hes there for. He goes all out whenever hes attached to a project. Its been fabulous working with Saif Ali Khan sir as well. He has never played a blind man before, and the preparation that has gone into the role has been phenomenal. Moreover, some of the locations where we shot were not the easiest in terms of accessibility. But its been a wonderful ride with these actors, who have stood by us and given their all throughout. Both areas are perennially crowded Yes. And yet, we had rain machines, 500 extras and both our actors shooting there. It was quite a sight! You are in the business of cinema. Hence, what are your expectations in terms of box office? As I said earlier, we are here to make good cinema and give our all to the films that we are making. Everyone has excellent expectations from their film. You dont expect a single producer who would say, I dont expect my film to do well! All I can is that from my side, I am giving my 500% to the film. After that, what happens is not in my control. Thats in the hands of who is above all of us. Making films is more difficult due to budget issues. Moreover, many producers have complained about entourages that add to the costs. How do you tackle these challenges? To each their own. Every film is different and today, even actors understand that. If a film can afford it, then yes, why not? But when it cant, Im sure actors are understanding about it as well. At the end of the day, everyone needs to operate within the framework of what the film can afford.
