YSRCP, TDP spar after all-party meet, Jagan's party says TDP 'ignoring' special status demand

New Delhi: Leaders of the ruling TDP in Andhra Pradesh and opposition YSRCP engaged in a war words ahead of Parliament's Budget session over the issue of special category status for the state and its interests. The session begins from Monday and will have 19 sittings till August 12. After an all-party meet convened here by the BJP-led government at the Centre on the eve of the session, the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP accused the TDP of ignoring the issue of special category status and compromising the state's interests. The TDP, a BJP ally, hit back by blaming the previous Jagan Mohan Reddy government for Andhra Pradesh's financial woes, and said the N Chandrababu Naidu-led dispensation will come out with a white paper in a day or two on the financial status of the state which will send shockwaves. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who was present at the meeting, took a swipe at the TDP, saying the JD(U) and the YSRCP demanded special category status for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, respectively, but strangely the TDP kept quiet on the matter. Like the TDP, the JD(U) is also an ally of the BJP and part of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre. Briefing reporters on the issues raised by the YSRCP at the all-party meeting, the party's floor leader in the Rajya Sabha, Vijaisai Reddy, said the YSRCP demanded imposition of President's Rule over the law and order reakdown in the state under the TDP's rule of a few weeks. He said eight issues were raised by his party, and the first one was of special category status for Andhra Pradesh. It has been our demand right from the day it was promised by then prime minister Manmohan Singh on the floor of the Rajya Sabha. Even today, we demand that the special category status is the only solution. The TDP is completely ignoring the issue...it is compromising with the interests of the people of the state, Vijaisai Reddy said. He said the YSRCP also raised the issues of Andhra Pradesh's share in the central pool of taxes and states following population control being punished in share of revenue. The issue of population as a criteria for sharing of funds must be addressed by the Finance Commission, Vijaisai Reddy said. He said the party also raised the issue of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, saying it is opposed to any attempts of its privatisation. Another very important issue raised was that of lawlessness in Andhra Pradesh and the breakdown of law and order, Reddy said. He claimed that 490 government and 560 private properties have been attacked, and there have been 1,050 assault cases and 31 murders in 45 days days of TDP rule. We have appealed to the government to impose the President's Rule in Andhra Pradesh to prevent breakdown of law and order, he said. The YSRCP leader said Jagan Mohan Reddy will be in Delhi on Tuesday and hold a dharna against the TDP-led Andhra Pradesh government. Briefing reporters about the issues TDP raised at the all-party meeting, TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu said at the meet, his party made the request to be given enough time in Parliament to raise all issues pertaining to Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh government is going to release a white paper on the status of finances of the state in a day or two. We want the people of India to have a look at it. It will definitely send shockwaves among the people, he said. We want the members to examine the financial status of Andhra Pradesh which has been deteriorating day by day so that whatever demands we are going to make, we want all parties to accept them, Devarayalu told reporters after the meeting. He also said his party will raise in Parliament issues such as the Amravati capital region, its opposition to the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and the need for a skill census. Asked about YSRCP's allegation that the TDP government was ignoring the special category status issue and compromising with people's interest, Devarayalu said, We are clear, we are not stuck with one or two issues, we have an entire gamut of issues. We will definitely use this opportunity of the coming Budget session to raise all the issues important for Andhra Pradesh. On the YSRCP's charge of lawlessness under the TDP rule, he said, We should remember they (YSRCP) are trying to run away from assembly session in Andhra Pradesh. The CM of Andhra Pradesh has said he will answer all questions. Instead of raising issues in the assembly session starting Monday, they are running away from the assembly and are trying to divert attention from the financial mess the state is in. There is no law and order issue in Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Naidu has made it clear that law and order is the top most priority, he said.

Chandrababu Naidu to be sworn in as Andhra chief minister today; PM Modi, Shah to attend

Chandrababu Naidu to be sworn in as Andhra chief minister today; PM Modi, Shah to attend Telugu Desam Party supremo Chandrababu Naidu is set to be sworn in on Wednesday as the 18th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The swearing-in of Naidu and his cabinet will be attended by BJP's top brass, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, Amit Shah and JP Nadda, among others. A 24-member Cabinet will also take oath today alongwith the Chief Minister at around 11.27 am in a ceremony held at Kesarpalli IT Park in Gannavaram Mandal on the outskirts of Vijayawada. Naidu had led the TDP- BJP-Janasena National Democratic Alliance to a landslide victory in the Assembly as well as parliamentary elections The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo was unanimously elected the leader of the NDA in the Andhra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday at a meeting of the TDP, Janasena Party and BJP legislators. On Tuesday, Andhra Governor S Abdul Nazeer invited Naidu to form the government. This will be the fourth time Naidu assumes charge as Andhra Chief Minister and the second time after the bi-furcation in 2014. Heavy security arrangements have been put in place as part of the oath-taking ceremony. Amit Shah and Nadda were received by Naidu's son and TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh at the Gannavaram airport last evening, ahead of the swearing-in ceremony. Early visuals from the venue ahead of the ceremony showed huge number of supporters already gathered to witness the TDP supremo assuming office of Chief Minister. TDP holds the majority in Andhra Pradesh 175-member assembly with 135 MLAs, while its allies, the Janasena Party, has 21 and BJP has eight. The opposition YSR Congress Party has 11 legislators. As per a list released by the TDP, the Cabinet will have 21 MLAs from the TDP, three from the Janasena Party and one from the BJP. The TDP MLAs who will be taking oaths include Nara Lokesh, Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Nimmala Ramanaidu, NMD Farooq, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Payyavula Kesav, Kollu Ravindra, Ponguru Narayana, Vangalapudi Anita, Anagani Satya Prasad, Kolusu Parthasaradhi, Kola Balaveeranjaneya Swamy, Gottipati Ravi, Gummadi Sandhyarani, BC Janardhan Reddy, TG Bharath, S Savitha, Vasamsetty Subhash, Kondapalli Srinivas and Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy. Konidela Pawan Kalyan, Nadendla Manohar and Kandula Durgesh will be swearing-in as ministers representing the Janasena Party, while Satya Kumar Yadav is the lone MLA from BJP taking oath today as minister in the Naidu cabinet. Naidu first assumed the role of chief minister in 1995, before the Andhra bifurcation and he led the state until 2004 for nine consecutive years. The TDP supremo returned as the chief minister of the bifurcated Andhra in 2014 and served until 2019. The YSR Congress, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, rose to power in 2019, dethroning Naidu's TDP and winning 151 of the 175 seats. Earlier, addressing the legislators' meeting in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Naidu thanked the people and supporters for the historic win. He also said that Amravati will be the capital of Andhra Pradesh. There will be no situation where we will be playing with states future saying three capitals , our capital is Amaravati and Amaravati will continue to be our capital. Vishakapatnam will be financial capital and will make it developed city. This much victory and satisfaction I never had before. In Delhi, everyone respected us because of the mandate the people had given us. In 1994, there were one-sided elections. Even then, we did not win this many seats. We won 164 seats. We only lost 11 seats. That is, we won 93 per cent. The average voting percentage was 57 per cent in these elections. Our responsibility has increased, Naidu said. He emphasised that it will be the people's regime in the state, and each decision will be in the interest of the people. Making it clear that there will be no vindictive politics like demolishing the Praja Vedika and giving the slogan of three capitals, the Chief Minister-designate said that the positive government will function most responsibly. There will be no space for any kind of unrest. In my four-decade-long political career, I have seen several elections but the just-concluded polls are history. And now the entire responsibility lies on all of us to rise up to the expectations of the people. I salute all the people of the state for the verdict that they have given, Chandrababu said. (ANI)

Amaravati : The city's lapse over time

The Andhra Pradesh government led by Chandrababu Naidu began work in 2014 to establish the capital city after the state was divided. It was decided, with all parties' consent, to develop Amaravati as the capital city between Guntur and Vijayawada. The area of the capital city is 217.23 kms. is slated for construction. out of which 16.94 sq. km. constitute the seed capital area. It has 31 towns in Mangalagiri, Tullur and Tadepalli. Amaravati is 12 km southwest of Vijayawada city and 24 km north of Guntur city. It was conceived of by the Chandrababu government at the time. Picture Courtesy : X The new capital's land was acquired in a novel manner, primarily through contracts with farmers for plots in the developed city. 30,000 acres were recruited from 25,000 farmers in 60 days. On October 22, 2015, Vijayadashami, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the groundwork for the capital city's construction. M. Venkaiah Naidu, the then-Union Urban Development Minister, laid the foundation stone for the Andhra Pradesh Administration Building Complex on October 28, 2016. In the period of January 2016, Nara Chandrababu Naidu established the groundwork stone of the impermanent secretariat building complex. The administration was supposed to leave that location by June 2015, The Legislative Assembly started on March 2, 2017, marking the beginning of administration. How far the Amaravati works have been? Since 2017, a temporary assembly and secretariat have been constructed as part of the construction of Amaravati, the capital. After that the High Court building was ready ,the exercises began here from 2019. Andhra Pradesh High Court Picture courtesy : X Development work for extremely durable convenience of government authorities has begun. The MLA and MLC quarters were the first of these, and their construction is almost 80 percent complete. In a similar vein, the buildings built for IAS and IPS officers are also 90% finished. The quarters for Group 3 and Group 4 employees are almost done being built. The Judge's Quarters construction has also begun. The construction of infrastructure in the capital region has been given top priority. In Amaravati, a seeded access road with six lanes is almost complete. Only 5 kilometers of road remain to link it to National Highway 16. The majority of internal roads have also begun. Additionally, construction of an underground water supply pipe line has begun, with approximately 30% of this work completed. The majority of these pipes have been gathered and kept. The future city of Amaravati as proposed by the Chandrababu Naidu Government Picture Courtesy : X The underpinnings of the 50 celebrated building which is supposed to be known as the world's biggest and most lovely secretariat after the finish of the development have been finished. Here, there are three towers. There will be 42 floors in two of them. The master plan states that these will be Seed Capital's iconic buildings. Aside from this many works have been begun. While some are in the pillars stage, others are in the foundation stage. The government changed at this point. Later, everything came to a pause. However, these half-finished projects have been put on hold for four and a half years due to the YCP government taking on three capitals. The workers for hire who hung tight for a couple of days have likewise gone out from that point. What were the authorities comments? A total of 270 square kilometers are being used to construct the capital city. Parks and other communal uses have been allocated 30% of the land. Building 1,600 kilometers of roads has been proposed. By the time the works are stopped, according to officials, they will be in various stages worth Rs 36,960 crore. At that time, officials from the CRDA disclosed that 77% of the works would be finished if the construction was finished. Officials have previously disclosed that Rs. 12,986 crores are being spent on the first phase of road construction and Rs. 12,545 crores are being spent on land acquisition. Amravati Government Complex Picture Courtesy : X What's going on right now? In the event that there is nobody who has been dealing with it for very nearly four and a half years ' the half-finished developments of Amaravati have grown up around the thistle brambles, water has deteriorated in certain establishments. The foundations of the iconic buildings, in particular, are stuck in the water. At the very least, there is no way to get to the area where the work is being done from the road. The under construction structures gave up after four and a half years of neglect. Among the designs here, the Venkatesha temple worked under the sponsorship of TTD is the one in particular that has been finished. However, in contrast to the previous plan, it was built in a very small space. Under construction complex in Amaravati Picture Courtesy : X Present Situation in Amaravati: There has been a loss of crores of rupees in public funds. Few buildings remain in poor condition on halfway roads. There are also allegations of scams in land accusations by the previous YSRCP government over which the Crime Investigation Department (CID) had filed charge sheets and legal proceedings are underway, making it a key challenge for the incumbent government to deal with. Party pioneer Chandrababu said that the development work of the capital will be taken up following his government formation. But up until this point, how long will the buildings that have been stopped in half construction be used? How do underground pipelines currently look? In the event that the ground needs to be cleared from the beginning rather than for the initial constructions, how much additional money will be required? What methods do you use to accumulate funds? These are unanswered inquiries as of now. It is fascinating how the Chandrababu government will now provide the people with the answers to these questions through its actions.

Recalibrating the new Modi govt to Coalition Politics

Monday, June 9. As Narendra Modi assumes the office of the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term, India stands at a crossroads. Are we to expect a continuation of the Modi 2.0, with its bold and controversial interventions such as demonetisation, the abrogation of Article 370, Citizenship Amendment Act, and rebuilding of the Ram Mandir? Or will there be a significant and substantial break from the past? Will Modis brand of Hindutva socialism continue or will it be overrun by rewadi-populism, just to appease coalition partners and an opposition that is expected to be increasingly strident? Special status for Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Hundreds of lakhs of crores for the formers new capital in Amravati. Several plum cabinet positions bartered in exchange for continuing support. Even the sacrifice of key leaders, not just cabinet posts. But will this be enough? Will it work? This is the question on everyones mind. For starters, Modi 3.0 will flounder, even come unstuck, if there isnt a newer avatar of the Hindu Hriday Samrat . No more the singular, authoritarian, centralised style, or a one-man show. Modi will not only have to share photo ops with other lesser mortals, he may even have to consent to be co-garlanded with alliance partners and regional satraps. Will eating humble pie come naturally to Narendra bhai ? Re-elected with a sizeable but sobering reduction in seats, Modis leadership remains unchallenged within the BJP, as also among a substantial section of Indias populace. Indeed, his previous two terms have seen the commanding heights of a distinct brand of governance marked by a pronounced presidential style. Now, he has to change from the presidential to parliamentary style. To sustain Indias growth trajectory and maintain its democratic fabric, Modi will need to alter this approach to ensure a more calibrated coalition dharma . This means much lesser assertive central leadership and much more accommodative federalism. Just as well. Coalition dharma was, until not too long ago, the defining feature of our democracy, the essential balancing act of managing political, religious, social, cultural and geographical diversity. By offering not so much a fractured but moderated mandate, the electorate has sent a definite signal to Modi: be less autocratic and more accommodating. From that point of view, the return to coalition dharma may actually be good for Indian democracy. The term coalition dharma is particularly significant in the context of Indian politics. On one hand, it may refer to indecisive and compromised leadership, unable to carry out big-ticket reforms or work for the genuine interests of the nation. But on the other, when too much power is concentrated in the hands of a single individual or a small coterie of supporters, it may not necessarily mean something positive. An unwritten code of conduct governs the behaviour of parties within a coalition government. This code necessitates mutual respect, consensus-building and a balancing of myriad interests. While Modis BJP has previously enjoyed a massive mandate that eliminated the immediate need for coalition partners, now the party and its leadership will have to recalibrate itself to operate more effectively within the broader framework of a vast, diverse and multi-party democracy. Modis mettle will be tested given the criticism levied against him for centralising power using strong-arm tactics against opponents. Civil society has also been vocal about the control of mass media and the erasure of dissent in the public sphere. The essential question, then, is whether Modi, once labelled divider-in-chief by his critics, can now metamorphose into uniter-in-chief for the Indian republic. This will require engaging constructively not only with coalition partners, but with opposition parties. Because implicit to coalition dharma is cooperative federalism. Modi will also do well to listen to stakeholders of society at large, including activists, intellectuals and marginal groups rather than silencing their voices or resorting to the proverbial shooting the messenger. Welcoming competing narratives of national unity rather than pushing compelling ones could reposition him as the champion of a cohesive and inclusive nationalism. Can Modi 3.0 underwrite a more open and plural style of strong yet responsive governance rather than trying to force major reforms such as the farm laws without sufficient consultation? That was a tactical as well as practical error, which may have actually boomeranged and cost him several seats in this election. Such a grand reconciliatory approach might include institutional revitalisation, wherein Parliament, judiciary and media function without perceived executive encroachments and diktats. Such a transformation would not only revive democratic institutions but also bolster Modis legacy as a leader who fortified Indias institutional integrity and democratic polity. Finally, to the international arena. Modis diplomatic overtures in previous tenures have often been outstanding and bold, with significant emphasis on augmenting Indias global stature. These must be continued, without diluting Indias role as a major player on the world stage, despite the reduced mandate at home. As the geopolitical environment grapples with power realignments, Modi 3.0 must navigate relationships with the US, China, and Russia, while strengthening ties in the Indo-Pacific region. This requires shrewd diplomacy and strategic partnerships. Would the vision of India as a Vishwaguru or world teacher, as espoused by Modi, necessitate some dilution while building these international bridges? Will Modi rise to the occasion? Will he make a successful transition from the me-first personality cult to the humbler leadership style as demanded by coalition dharma? I believe he can. In fact, he must. He has already taken the first step by publicly bowing to the Indian Constitution as his first act after being reelected as the NDAs prime ministerial candidate. Being a consummate political performer, no task is too big or too difficult for him. If his first visualswith his 72-member coalition Cabinetacross our screens are any indication, the start of Modi 3.0 is impressive and inclusive. History is being scripted as the Modi era continues. Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh government has placed Director-General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta as Full Additional Charge (FAC) of the posts of Additional Director-General of Police, Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Inspector-General of Police, Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) Department. The decision came after the government transferred CID Additional Director-General of Police N Sanjay and V&E department IG Kolli Raghuram Reddy on Friday and asked them to report at the office of DGP with immediate effect. During the previous regime of YSRCP, Sanjay supervised the probe into the cases related to Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Scam and Alignment of Amravati Inner Ring Road against the TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu. These cases resulted in the arrest of Naidu who was later lodged in Rajahmundry central prison. Raghuram Reddys letter proposing to give powers to raid any government office created controversy in the State.

Sanjeev Ahluwalia | Can the new NDA work together for survival?

Elon Musk cancelled a pre-poll meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on feeble grounds and went on a business call to China instead. In doing so, he displayed intuition (aided by AI?) that eluded the domestic pollsters about outcomes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In the end, the pollsters ate humble pie as the BJP struggled to a total of 240 seats out of 543, 32 short of a simple majority, and far below its 2019 level of 303 seats. Even in Varanasi, the Prime Ministers adopted constituency, the win margin (difference between the votes of the winner and the next best candidate) was 1,52,513 (about 25 per cent). Observers were quick to point out that just 242 km to the west in the heart of Awadh, in Rae Bareli, a family bastion passed on by Sonia Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi in this election, the win margin was 57 per cent. Pappu, as the ruling alliance sometimes derisively refers to Rahul Gandhi, seems to have come a long way. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections unleashed two tremors for the BJP. The first was the shock that the BJP is not atma nirbhar for survival. With just 240 seats versus the 272 needed to form a government, it now desperately needs the alliance partners -- principally the 16 Telugu Desam Party seats in Andhra Pradesh and 12 JD-U seats in Bihar -- to survive with a wafer-thin majority. This elevates the political profiles of both Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Nitesh Kumar within the NDA to white knights from their earlier status as junior alliance partners. The allocation of Union Cabinet portfolios will reflect this. If the BJP is to retain the core sovereign portfolios of finance, home, external affairs and defence, it will have to give up other key portfolios -- Power, petroleum and natural gas, coal and mines, IT, urban affairs and housing or railways. This will dissolve the existing close-knit, intra-party, walled pattern of functioning, with the Prime Ministers Office being the dominant driving force via a direct connect with top civil servants in the ministries. The second tremor was the structural shift in electoral preferences across states. The biggest shock was the tidal wave of support in Uttar Pradesh for the Samajwadi Party, an INDIA alliance partner, which won 37 of the 80 seats, with the BJP left with 33. The Congress was a distant third with eight seats but the INDIA alliance, with 47 seats, won more than 50 per cent of the seats. Similarly unsettling were the West Bengal results, where Mamata Bannerjees Trinamul Congress swept the polls, with 29 of the 42 seats. The BJP was a distant second with 12 seats, whilst the Congress was reduced to just one seat. Rajasthan, where the BJP recently came to power in the Assembly polls, chose to play truant in the Lok Sabha elections and returned eight Congress seats, though with 14 out of 25 seats the BJP retained its electoral dominance. Haryana also chose to divide the 10 seats evenly between the BJP and the Congress. In Bihar, whilst the NDA remained dominant with Nitish Kumars Janata Dal (United) polling 12 seats, the same as the BJP, the balance of power shifts away from the BJP. In Maharashtra, attempting to cannibalise its alliance partner the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) has not helped. The BJP got just nine of the 48 seats, its NDA alliance partners Shiv Sena (Shinde) got seven seats and the NCP (of Ajit Pawar) one seat. In comparison, the Congress got the largest number of seats (13) and together with its INDIA alliance partners -- Sharad Pawar NCP (8) and the Uddhav Thackrey Shiv Sena (9) -- a majority of 30 out of 48 seats. It is unwise, however, to assume that the BJPs vote bank has dissipated. It won all 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh and 25 out of 26 seats in Gujarat. In the hill states of North India, the BJP is well entrenched. Himachal Pradesh, which recently elected a Congress government in the Assembly elections, kept its options open by giving a five out of five victory for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. In Uttarakhand, the five out of five win was unexceptional since the recent Assembly elections were also won by the BJP. The BJP won all seven seats in Delhi, decimating the Congress and AAP. More importantly, the BJPs foray into the South continues unabated. In Karnataka, the BJP won 17 of the 28 seats. In Telangana, it won eight of the 17 seats, drawing level with the Congress. The Assembly elections, held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls, reflected continuity in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. But change was the leitmotif in the two larger states. In Odisha, the BJP triumphed by ejecting chief minister Naveen Patnaik, son of the legendary World War II pilot Biju Patnaik, who was chief minister (1961-63) in a Congress government. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), in power since 2000, was ripe for a drubbing after nearly a quarter century of decent but somnolent rule by Naveen Patnaik, who unbelievably, drafted a civil servant turned politician to manage the 2024 election. That the Indian political class and the electorate prefers a red line between the bureaucracy and politicians was amply displayed by the results. The BJP, with 78 seats, swept past the 73 seats needed for a majority. The BJD was reduced to 51 seats. The Congress came in third, with 14 seats. In the Andhra Pradesh Assembly polls, Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the original Andhra economic reformer, early digital governance aficionado of the 2000s, and the architect of the new bifurcated Andhra Pradesh in 2014, with its brand-new capital city at Amravati, struck a century with his Telugu Desam Party winning 135 of the 175 seats, leaving the earlier ruling YSR Congress with just 11 seats. Significantly, BJP came in third with eight seats, continuing to consolidate support across all five states in the South. Management experts believe that in mergers, getting the senior executives to realign expectations is the most difficult part. This becomes worse in coalition politics, where oddballs cannot just be booted out. Cabinet colleagues, especially if they hold substantive portfolios, and alliance partners must be cajoled and negotiated with, not bludgeoned, or ignored into submission. Can Prime Minister Modi shed the President Xi style of remote, unyielding supreme leadership projected by him, retrieve his earlier collaborative inner self, and use his expertise at shaping political trends to ensure stability? The survival of the new NDA government is hostage to his personal transformation.

Covid-19: New variant FLiRT increases the problem, appeal to wear masks again in this country

Corona cases had remained stable globally for the last few months, however, now a surge is being seen once again. According to a recent report by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a new set of new variants of corona have been seen in wastewater recently, which has been named FLiRT. Cases of this new variant are increasing rapidly in many countries including the United States and Singapore. The situation is that due to the rapidly increasing infection, the Singapore Health Ministry has once again appealed to all people to wear masks. The KP.2 sub-variant caused about 25% of cases in the US from April 14 to 27, according to the CDC. Globally, JN.1 of Corona and its sub-variants, which include KP.1 and KP.2, are seen to be on the rise. More than two-thirds of cases in Singapore currently are KP.1 and KP.2. Researchers said that this variant of Corona is like Omicron, which can infect people rapidly. Apart from this, this variant is also succeeding in dodging the body's immunity created by vaccination. Information about the new variant - Corona's new variant 'FLiRT' surfaced, Alert regarding new variant FLiRT According to CDC data, two strains of the FLiRT variant (KP.1.1 and KP.2) are currently increasing rapidly. In two weeks, a rapid increase in the cases of infection due to this variant is being recorded. Megan L., Dean of the Yale School of Public Health in America. Rainie said in a report that some worrying features have been observed in Filart. There are changes in its spike protein that enable it to easily enter the human body and cause infection. Advice to wear mask again amid increasing infection According to media reports, a new wave of Covid-19 is being seen in Singapore. According to the Health Department, more than 25,900 cases have been registered here from May 5 to 11. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on Saturday once again appealed to the public to wear masks. Kung said, we are in the initial phase of this new wave, and cases of infection are continuously increasing. It is expected to increase further in the next two to four weeks. Given this danger, all people should once again make a habit of wearing masks so that the spread of infection can be controlled. Everyone needs to continue taking special precautions regarding this new wave of infection till the end of June. Cases of new variants have also been reported in India According to media reports, cases of a new variant of Corona, Filarte, have been reported in India also. So far 250 cases have been registered in India. KP.2 and KP1.1 are believed to be responsible for the majority of cases. 91 cases of Omicron sub-variant KP.2 have been identified in Maharashtra, indicating a surge in corona cases in the state. According to data till May 15, Pune has the highest number of 51 people found infected with this new variant, with Thane at second place with 20 cases. Seven cases each were reported in Amravati and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts. What is the reason for the increase in infection? According to CDC health experts, only 22.6% of adults have received a COVID-19 vaccine since September 2023. The data also shows that vaccination coverage has increased by age, with people aged 75 and older getting more vaccinations during this period. So we have a higher population of young people with weakened immune systems, which increases our susceptibility to a wave, said Thomas A. Russo, chief of infectious diseases at the University at Buffalo. The effectiveness of vaccines decreases over time, it has been a long time since most people had their last vaccine, which is leading to a surge in cases of infection once again. (PC: PTI)

91 cases of Omicron sub-variant KP.2 have been identified in Maharashtra, indicating a rise in corona cases in the state. (PC: PTI)

Elections to the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra will be held in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20. West Bengal: Fate of several star candidates to be decided Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, TMC's Shatrughan Sinha, Mahua Moitra and Yusuf Pathan, BJP's SS Ahluwalia and Dilip Ghosh will be among the candidates whose fates will be decided in the EVMs as eight Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal will go to the polls in the fourth phase on Monday. Spread over Murshidabad, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman and Birbhum districts, the problems flagged by voters in these constituencies vary from migrant labour, drinking water supply and drying up of industries, while the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) notification is a bone of contention between the TMC and BJP in some places. Polling will be held in Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat (SC), Bardhaman Purba (SC), Bardhaman-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur (SC) and Birbhum in West Bengal in the fourth round of the Lok Sabha polls. Film star-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha is seeking re-election from Asansol and is pitted against the BJP's veteran leader SS Ahluwalia. In Krishnanagar, the TMC has put up its outspoken leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the 17th Lok Sabha last December, against BJP's Amrita Roy, a member of the Krishnanagar royal family. Former Bengali cine celebrity Satabdi Roy is seeking a fourth term from the Birbhum seat, which is now shorn of its maverick TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, lodged in Tihar jail in connection with an alleged cattle smuggling case. Congress' leader in the outgoing Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, fighting for a sixth consecutive term from Baharampur, is set to see his clout tested in the seat considered his fortress for the last three decades, with the TMC having fielded former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan and the BJP's Nirmal Kumar Saha. BJP's former West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh, whose controversial comments on various issues and against TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee have often made headlines, is contesting from Bardhaman-Durgapur, having been shifted by the saffron party from Kharagpur, where he had won in 2019. Trinamool Congress has put up former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad from the seat, while CPI(M) has fielded Sukriti Ghosal. BJP's Jagannath Sarkar is seeking re-election from Ranaghat constituency, which has a significant Matua population. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been a profound issue of debate here between the saffron party and the TMC. TMC announced the candidature of Mukut Mani Adhikari for the seat soon after he joined the party, leaving the BJP, of which he was an MLA from Ranaghat Dakshin assembly segment. Asit Kumar Mal is seeking re-election from Bolpur on a TMC ticket, having been pitted against Priya Saha of BJP and Shyamali Pradhan of the CPI (M). In Bardhaman Purba, TMC fielded psychiatrist Sharmila Sarkar against BJP's folk singer candidate Ashim Kumar Sarkar, who is the saffron party's MLA from Haringhata Assembly segment, and CPI(M)'s Nirav Kha. Jharkhand: Four reserved seats in fray The stage is set for voting in Jharkhand's four Lok Sabha constituenciesSinghbhum, Khunti, Lohardaga and Palamuon Monday amidst heavy security deployments in all polling booths. Of the four Lok Sabha seats, three are reserved for Schedule Tribe (ST), while Palamu is reserved for Schedule Caste (SC) candidates. Interestingly, the number of female voters is higher than the number of male voters in three tribal seats. More than 64.37 lakh electors, including 32.07 lakh female voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the four constituencies in the state, an election official said. A total of 45 candidates, including seven from Khunti, 15 from Lohardaga, nine from Palamu and 14 from Singhbhum, are in the poll fray. An interesting fight is likely in all three tribal seats as the JMM-led ruling alliance and the BJP-led opposition in Jharkhand have put all their efforts into galvanising people's support in their favour. In Singhbhum, BJP's Geeta Kora, who had won the seat on Congress ticket in 2019, has locked horns with INDIA bloc's Joba Manjhi, who is a JMM MLA from Manoharpur assembly seat. Khunti is heading for a direct fight between Union Minister and BJP nominee Arjun Munda and the INDIA bloc's Kalicharan Munda. The Lohardaga seat might see a triangular contest after JMM's Bishunpur MLA Chamra Linda filed nomination as an Independent candidate against BJP's Samri Oraon and INDIA bloc's Sukhdeo Bhagat. The Palamu seat is set for a direct fight between the BJP's sitting MP Vishnu Dayal Ram and RJD's Mamta Bhuiyan as INDIA bloc candidate.

He meant to settle things...: AIMIM leader Akhtarul Iman defends Akbaruddin Owaisi's '15-Minute' remark

He meant to settle things...: AIMIM leader Akhtarul Iman defends Akbaruddin Owaisi's '15-Minute' remark In response to AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's controversial 15-minute remark made in 2013, AIMIM Bihar President Akhtarul Iman defended him, stating that Owaisi intended to resolve tensions between Hindus and Muslims if given 15 minutes. Iman emphasized that Owaisi did not imply violence but rather suggested that removing police presence could enable communities to settle disputes peacefully. Reacting to BJP leader Navneet Rana's response to Owaisi's comment, Imam said, The people of BJP cannot understand anything. Akbaruddin Owaisi did not say that in 15 minutes he would murder someone or burn someone's house, he meant to say that, removing the Police and Hindu-Muslim brothers would settle everything together. Wherever there are clashes it is the police who ignite it BJP Madhya Pradesh State In charge Muralidhar Rao also slammed Owaisi for his remarks and accused the AIMIM of practising the divide and rule policy. AIMIM represents the communal ideology, and they follow the policy of divide and rule. People know the history of MIM. They have never disowned the legacy of Razakars, even today whenever they criticize Hindus, they bring up Hindu deities. The problem is not AIMIM, it is the Congress and BRS who have taken support from MIM, and that is the reason they have supported Muslim reservation, based on religion, Rao said while speaking to ANI. Earlier, while responding to the AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's statement that they would take them all of '15 minutes' to balance out the Hindu-Muslim ratio in the country, Navneet, who is seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Amravati, on a BJP ticket this time; hit back at the Owaisi brothers, saying it would take us 15 seconds if the police were removed or made to stand down.Rana was heard saying in a video clip she posted on her X handle, tagging the Owaisi brothers, The younger brother says, 'Remove the police for 15 minutes so that we can show them what we can do'. BJP's Navneet Rana Challenges Owaisi Brothers to Remove Police Security for '15 Seconds'; AIMIM Responds, Unafraid

BJP's Navneet Rana Challenges Owaisi Brothers to Remove Police Security for '15 Seconds'; AIMIM Responds, Unafraid In a scathing attack against AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and his brother Akbaruddin, BJP leader Navneet Rana has said that if the police were removed from duty for ''15 seconds, the brothers would not know from where they came and where they went''. Rana's blistering attack came in response to a 2013 controversial speech by AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi in which he said it would take them only ''15 minutes'' to balance the ''Hindu-Muslim ratio'' in the country if the police were removed. ''The younger one (Akbarauddin) says remove the police for 15 minutes and we will show what we can do. Let me tell the younger one, you will take 15 minutes; it will be only 15 seconds for us. If you remove police for 15 seconds, you won't know where you came from and where you went away,'' said Rana, the BJP's candidate from Maharashtra's Amravati Lok Sabha seat. Rana shared a video clip of her making the comments on social media platform X. She was campaigning in support of BJP's Hyderabad Lok Sabha candidate K Madhavi Latha and others in Telangana on Wednesday. Asked about her comments, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said he would like to tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give even one hour. ''Modi ji has power, give 15 seconds, rather take one hour. We also would like to see how much humanity is left or not. Who is scared? Who is stopping you? The Prime Minister is yours in Delhi. RSS is yours. Everything is yours. Tell us where to come. We will come,'' Owaisi told reporters. On Navneet Rana's reported comments that a vote to AIMIM would go to Pakistan, Owaisi said RSS and BJP have hatred towards the country's diversity and pluralism. The RSS ideology should be defeated, he said. Owaisi said that PM Modi had suddenly landed in Pakistan from Afghanistan, and reached former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's residence in 2014. ''What was it?,'' he asked. Modi described Muslims as infiltrators and also said that Muslims produce more children, and the same language is being used, he pointed out. When told that the controversy started with the comments of '15 minutes' by his brother Akbaruddin, he said the matter was decided in courts. ''We are saying you do it. Why do you say? We are sitting here. Do it. We are saying do it. You have to do it,'' he said, furthering emphasising his point.

I would have been jailed immediately if...: Waris Pathan demands 'strict action' against Navneet Rana

I would have been jailed immediately if...: Waris Pathan demands 'strict action' against Navneet Rana Reacting to BJP leader Navneet Rana's 15 seconds lagenge remark, AIMIM leader Waris Pathan questioned why the police and the Election Commission have not taken any action against her and claimed that if he had said something like this, he would have been jailed. In a self-made video, the AIMIM leader said that Rana was making such remarks because she understood that she is badly losing from Amravati seat this time. Navneet Rana knows that she is badly losing from Amravati this time. She is unable to accept this and that is why she is uttering all this nonsense. What will you do if the police are removed for 15 seconds? What will she do if the police are removed? Will you kill all Muslims? What are the police and administration doing? Why has no action been taken so far? What is the Election Commission doing? Are such statements allowed in elections? We would like the Election Commissioner to take cognisance of this statement and take strict action. BJP has come to realise that this time it is difficult for them to cross 200-250 seats. If I said something like this, I would have been jailed immediately. Why is everyone silent now? he said. Meanwhile, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said that the BJP is working in the direction of PM Modi to spread hatred in the country. PM Modi and Amit Shah are spreading hatred in society so it is natural that their workers and candidates are also going to do the same. What Akbaruddin Owaisi has said is wrong and what Navnit Rana has said is also extremely shameful. They are all working in the direction of PM Modi to spread hatred in the country because PM Modi is losing this election badly. I will issue such a request to the Election Commission that both statements should be investigated and action should be taken against them, Prithviraj Chavan said. Invoking a provocative statement by AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi from 2013, BJP leader Navneet Rana issued a veiled warning to the Owaisi brothers in their stronghold Hyderabad on Wednesday. To the AIMIM leader's statement that they would take them all of '15 minutes' to balance out the Hindu-Muslim ratio in the country, Navneet, who seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Amravati, on a BJP ticket this time; hit back at the Owaisi brothers, saying it would take us 15 seconds if the police were removed or made to stand down. At a meeting in 2013, Akbaruddin warned 100 crore Hindus that his community would show what it could do if the police were withdrawn for '15 minutes'. Asaduddin has been the elected representative from Hyderabad since 2004. He was previously elected as an MLA twice in the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh. Owaisi faces BJP leader Madhavi Latha. Patna emerges as India's most flood-prone city, reveals recent study

Patna emerges as India's most flood-prone city, reveals recent study Patna experiences the worst floods in India, followed by West Bengal's Murshidabad and Maharashtra's Thane, according to a district-level flood severity index (DFSI) developed by researchers at IIT-Delhi and IIT-Roorkee. The index takes into account the historical severity of floods based on the number of affected people, the spread and duration of floods. The researchers said the top 10 districts where flood severity is the highest are: Patna, Murshidabad, Thane, North 24 Parganas (West Bengal), Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Ballia (Uttar Pradesh), East Champaran (Bihar), and East Medinipur (West Bengal). These are followed by Muzaffarnagar (Bihar), Lakhimpur (Assam), Kota (Rajasthan), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Malda (West Bengal), Rajkot (Gujarat), Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Aurangabad (Bihar), Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), Darjeeling (West Bengal), Dibrugarh (Assam), Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), Chamoli (Uttarakhand), West Champaran (Bihar), Amravati (Maharashtra), Medinipur West (West Bengal), and Samastipur (Bihar). Though Chamoli in Uttarakhand does not face recurrent floods, it appears on this list because of a few isolated highly damaging flood events. Among the 30 districts facing the highest risk of floods, 17 are in the Ganga basin and three are in the Brahmaputra basin. Among all the Indian river basins, the Ganga basin has the highest population, and its high flood proneness is worrisome, said the researchers, including Manabendra Saharia, an assistant professor at IIT-Delhi. Assam experiences the highest number of floods in India, having faced more than 800 flood events over 56 years. The other flood-prone states, in descending order of flood events, include Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Data from 1967 to 2023 shows that Thiruvananthapuram has experienced more than 231 floods or more than four events per year on average. Five districts -- Thiruvananthapuram, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Kamrup, and Nagaon -- have been categorised as ''severely flood-prone,'' having recorded more than 178 floods, or more than three events per year on average. The researchers said localised intense rainfall events are likely to rise in the future due to climate change, and therefore, more flash floods are expected. Under the warming climate, the frequency of cyclones will increase, and coastal and nearby inland areas will face more instances of intense rainfall and floods. It is also likely that areas that are not currently flood-prone may begin to see flooding. The researchers said human fatality due to floods is nearly stable or has come down in recent times due to better management despite an increase in the population in India. The number of deaths is around 1,000 per year since 2015, the data showed.

BJP Chief Amit Shah Claims PM Modi Gathering Momentum Towards 400 Seat Mark After 3rd Phase of LS Polls

BJP Chief Amit Shah Claims PM Modi Gathering Momentum Towards 400 Seat Mark After 3rd Phase of LS Polls Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday exuded confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be heading towards the 400-seat mark after the third phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. He also opined that the number of seats gained by the BJP after the first two rounds of polling would have crossed 100. Addressing an NDA rally here, Shah accused the ruling YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh of encouraging corruption and crime in Andhra Pradesh. Mocking INDI Alliance partners, Shah said none of the INDIA bloc leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were fit to lead the country, while on the other hand, the whole country has decided to make Modi the Prime Minister for the third time. Taking a dig at the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government, he said the BJP, Telugu Desam Party, and actor Pawan Kalyan-led Janasena forged an alliance to bring to an end the alleged rule of goondas and criminals, rampant corruption and sand mafia in the state and to make Amravati the capital of Andhra Pradesh once again. Lok Sabha elections are held in the country. There are assembly as well as Lok Sabha polls held in Andhra Pradesh simultaneously. The first two phases of the general elections are over. In the first two phases, Modi is ahead, getting 100 seats. In the third phase, he is moving towards getting over 400 seats, Shah opined. The Home Minister said he was in Andhra Pradesh to lend strength to the BJP, TDP, and Jana Sena alliance's fight against corruption, crime, mafia and conversion in the state. The whole country has decided to make Modi the Prime Minister for the third time, he said while asserting that none of the INDIA bloc leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were fit to lead the country. Charging Reddy with trying to kill the Telugu language by introducing the English medium in primary education, Shah assured that the BJP would not allow such moves. Describing the Polavaram Project as the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh, the union minister alleged that it was derailed due to corruption in the state government. I came to give you a Modi guarantee. You vote Chandrababu Naidu (NDA) to power in Andhra Pradesh and Narendra Modi at the Centre. Within two years, Polavaram will be completed and water will be given to farmers, Shah assured. He alleged that the Congress party neglected the Ram Temple issue for 70 years whereas PM Modi performed 'Bhoomi Puja' and also consecrated it during his second term. Both Jaganmohan Reddy and Rahul Gandhi were invited for the Ram Temple consecration, but they did not attend. Will you vote for people who did not attend the Ram Temple consecration ? Shah asked. Seeking votes for the NDA candidates, Shah listed out the achievements of the NDA government at the Centre.

Uddhav: Alliance Partners Received Seats Won Five Times For Alliance's Well-being

Uddhav: Alliance Partners Received Seats Won Five Times For Alliance's Well-being Amid friction in the Maha Vikas Aghadi over Sangli Lok Sabha seat, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said his party left seats which it had won five times for its partners for the sake of the coalition. Addressing a rally in Sangli for his party candidate Chandrahar Patil, Thackeray exhorted voters not to allow division of votes in the fight against autocracy. Sending a warning to the BJP, he said all days are not the same and exuded confidence that the INDI alliance would win 300 Lok Sabha seats. Congress leader Vishal Patil, who is the grandson of former Maharashtra chief minister late Vasantdada Patil, is in the fray as an independent. The BJP has fielded sitting MP Sanjaykaka Patil. ''We left Ramtek seat which we won five times consecutively. We left Kolhapur seat for Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. We also left Amravati because the alliance was not just going to benefit me alone, but also our allies,'' Thackeray said. Amravati, Ramtek and Kolhapur seats are being contested by the Congress, part of the MVA along with Thackeray's outfit and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (SP). Thackeray's remarks come amid Sharad Pawar admitting earlier in the day that the candidate for Sangli Lok Sabha seat was announced without consultation between MVA constituents. Thackeray also assured local Congress leaders that his party will not stand in between their future, an indication that Shiv Sena (UBT) will not stake claim over its traditional seats in the district. Thackeray also said had the BJP not betrayed him, he would have stayed with them. However, Maharashtra was being looted and he did not want to be party to it so walked out of the alliance with the BJP, Thackeray claimed. Big ticket projects that were to come up in Maharashtra, like Vedanta Foxconn, Drugs Bulk Park and International Finance City. got shifted to Gujarat, the former chief minister alleged.

Maharashtra Political Parties Use 42 MLC Vacancies to Pacify Rebels

Mumbai: Political parties in Maharashtra are dangling the carrot of legislative council membership to keep the disgruntled party leaders in check. There are 21 vacant seats in the legislative council and the vacancies will double by the end of July this year. According to sources, all parties have promised the leaders, who were eager to contest Lok Sabha but denied tickets, a seat in the state legislative council. Some have been promised Rajya Sabha membership. Maharashtra has a total 78 members of the Legislative Council. Of these, 31 are elected by members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), 21 members are elected by local body authorities (like Municipal Corporations), seven members each are elected by graduates and teachers from Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Konkan, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Amravati divisions. In addition to this, 12 members are nominated by Maharashtra Governor. The governor has not nominated 12 members in the Legislative Council. These nominations are done on the recommendations of the state government to the Governor. Besides this, six members, who were elected by local authorities, are retiring by June 21 of this year. Two members each from graduates and teachers constituencies are retiring by July 7 of this year. In addition to this, out of the total 31 members elected by MLAs in the Legislative Council, the tenure of 11 members will end by July 27 of this year. There are already nine vacant seats, which are elected by local bodies, in the council. An official of the state legislature said that the members elected by the MLAs, who are retiring, include BJP's Nilay Naik, Ramrao Patil, Ramesh Patil and Bhai Girkar, NCP's Babajani Durrani, Congress's Wajahat Mirza, Dr. Pradnya Rajiv Satav, Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena (UBT) Anil Parab, Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena's Manisha Kayande, PWP's Jayant Patil and RSP's Mahadev Jankar. They are going to retire by July 27, 2024. We are going to conduct an election on 11 seats, which are elected by the MLA, after the Lok Sabha election, the official said. Nine vacant seats are not being filled due to non-existence of local bodies for more than a year. Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has denied ticket to its sitting MPs Hemant Patil from Hingoli, Bhavana Gawali from Yavatmal-Washim and Krupal Tumane from Ramtek. The three are reportedly upset with their party. BJP leader Harshvardhan Patil had opposed supporting the Ajit Pawar faction due to traditional political rivalry in Baramati. In addition to this, Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare's decision to challenge Ajit Pawar in Baramati had caused tension among Mahayuti. Subsequently, Mr Patil and Mr Shivtare have been pacified by Mr. Fadnavis and Mr. Shinde. A Mahayuti leader said that chief minister Eknath Shinde held meetings with Gawali, Patil and Tumane individually. All of them have been assured about their rehabilitations. We have asked the disgruntled leaders to ensure the victory of our candidates in Lok Sabha. We will do their proper political rehabilitation. They will be given an opportunity to go to the Legislative Council or they can get a ticket in the upcoming assembly elections later this year, the Mahayuti leader said. A BJP office bearer said that Harshvardhan Patil will be given an MLC ticket after Lok Sabha election if Mahayuti candidate wins Baramati Lok Sabha seat.
