Mumbai Diary | A whole new Pawar play in Maharashtra

Several MLAs from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP mostly from Solapur district are reportedly being lured by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to cross over to the NCP in exchange for development funds for their respective constituencies. They have reportedly had a series of meetings with Ajit, who also holds the Finance portfolio. In his authority, he has offered Rs 100 crore to each of the MLAs from his fathers party. It seems like a classic use of the carrot-and-stick approach, as these MLAs have reportedly been told that they wont receive the necessary funds if they dont join the NCP. Gorhes Mercedes claim comes back to bite her Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman and Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe caused a row when she claimed during a Marathi literary festival that in the undivided Sena, posts were obtained through corrupt means. She said that if you wanted a position, you would have to gift a Mercedes car to the party leaders. Though Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was quick to defend her remarks, it seems like she has had a change of mind. Gorhe reportedly called up Uddhav Thackeray to express regret. Not pleased, her party has started distancing itself from her. It is Sena vs Sena in Maha all over again Six of the nine Lok Sabha MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT) have reportedly been contacted by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is keen to welcome them to his Sena. The word is that Shinde has offered them more funds and plum positions in the government in exchange for crossing over to his party. A couple of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs attended a dinner arranged by Shindes side in the national capital. However, a close aide of Uddhav Thackeray is said to have warned them against jumping the ship, assuring them that the Uddhav-led faction is in talks with the BJP to join hands in the state and at the Centre. It is said that the saffron party plans to dispense with Shindes Sena. Sudhir Suryawanshi Our correspondent in Maharashtra suryawanshi.sudhir@gmail.com

Nagpur violence was 'government-sponsored': Maratha quota activist Jarange

MUMBAI: Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday claimed that violence in Nagpur was sponsored by the Mahayuti government and blamed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the unrest in the city. They (government) are giving protection to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's grave (located in Chhatrapati Samabhajinagar district), and at the same time there is a demand (from right-wing outfits) for its removal, Jarange said, adding that people should see through it. Violence erupted in central Nagpur on Monday evening , with stones hurled at police amid rumours that the holy book of a community was burnt during an agitation by a right-wing body for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. CM Fadnavis says Nagpur violence premeditated, 'Chhava' film fueled public anger This riot has been sponsored by government and Devendra Fadnavis, Jarange alleged while talking to reporters at Ellora in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. They now don't see those who insulted Shivaji Maharaj, he said, in a veiled reference to actor Rahul Solapurkar and a Nagpur resident who have been accused of insulting the Maratha king. The activist sought to know what happens to their Hindutva in such matters. Doing such things when the local body elections are around is not good, Jarange said. If they want to remove the Aurangzeb's grave, they are in power at the Centre and in the state. If the Congress made a mistake of protecting the structure earlier, now the rulers have a chance to correct it. This (violence) is just being done to make the poor people fight amongst themselves. The poor people should remain alert, he said. If they want to remove the grave, they can do it in a minute, the activist said. But the grave is given police protection by the state at the same time. People have the brain to understand this. The local governing body elections are around the corner. They (ruling parties) want to win the elections. They cannot solve issues plaguing the people, farmers and women, he claimed.

CM Fadnavis hails Shivaji Maharaj as management guru, says state won't forgive those who insult him

PUNE: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary on Wednesday, hailing him as a management guru and an able administrator who set an example of running a welfare state. Those who try to insult Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be shown their eal place and the state will not forgive them, Fadnavis told reporters after paying homage to the Maratha king at Shivneri Fort in Pune district. Shivaji Maharaj not only established 'Swarajya', but also ignited a sense of national pride, he said. The legendary warrior king was born on February 19, 1630 in Shivneri in the district's Junnar tehsil. Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar attended various programmes to mark Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary, including the 'cradle ceremony' at the Shivneri Fort. A large number of followers of the Maratha king also gathered at the fort to take part in his 395th birth anniversary event. Addressing the gathering at the fort, Fadnavis said Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not just a warrior, but also an able administrator who set an example of running a welfare state. He was a management guru in the truest sense, the chief minister added. Fadnavis said that setting foot on the land of Shivneri evokes the inspiration of 'Swarajya', and it is this very spirit that draws people to this place time and again. When many kings and kingdoms accepted Mughal rule, Mata Jijau envisioned Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the leader who would end the exploitation and tyranny, guiding the people towards Swarajya, he said. With the determination and values instilled by his mother, Shivaji Maharaj united people from all communities, wielded his sword, and built an army of Mavalas. He not only established 'Swarajya', but also ignited a sense of national pride, the CM said. Fadnavis stressed the importance of preserving Shivaji Maharaj's forts, saying they hold a greater significance than temples. We are working tirelessly to ensure the conservation of these forts by removing barriers. A task force has been created to clear encroachments from all these sites. Come what may, these encroachments will be removed, he asserted. The CM also announced that 12 forts from Maharashtra have been nominated for the UNESCO's World Heritage Site status under an initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the coming days, a team of the Maharashtra government, led by minister Ashish Shelar, will make a presentation highlighting these forts as exemplary architectural marvels at the UNESCO event in Paris, he said. Later, responding to a question on controversial remarks about the warrior king made by an actor recently, Fadnavis said, Those who try to insult Shivaji Maharaj will be shown their real place. If some people behave in such a manner, they will not be forgiven by the state or Shiv Premis (followers of Shivaji Maharaj). Notably, actor Rahul Solapurkar had stirred a row with his comments about Shivaji Maharaj. On the demand to make the Vicky Kaushal-starrer movie Chhava, based on the life of Shivaji Maharaj's son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, tax-free in Maharashtra, Fadnavis said the state government already abolished the entertainment tax on film tickets in 2017. We do not have the entertainment tax now, but we will take all possible steps to promote the film so that the incredible history of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's valour reaches the maximum number of people, he said. Asked if the government plans to set up a committee of historians to resolve disputes regarding history, Fadnavis said such disputes can be settled if they remain apolitical. If there is no political angle, these disputes can be resolved. However, if politics is involved, they may never be settled. In the past, we have formed several committees that provided recommendations, and the government has taken decisions based on those recommendations, he said. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, in his speech at the Shivneri Fort, said special attention was being given to the restoration work of Shivneri, the birthplace of the Maratha king. All these forts in the state are places of inspiration and we derive power and energy from them, and the state government is giving special attention to their restoration, he said. Shinde said there are many ideals for youth, but Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be the greatest ideal for generations to come.

The council of ministers also sanctioned Rs 1,275 crore to improve the Varkhede Londhe Barrage Medium Project in Jalgaon district. The project, located on the Girna River, will provide irrigation facilities to 8,290 hectares of land in Chalisgaon and Bhadgaon talukas. Under the approved plan, 65 out of the 108 pumps in the Mhaisal scheme will be upgraded to energy-efficient models. Additionally, an advanced monitoring system and a 200 MW solar power plant will be installed. The generated electricity will be supplied to the Narwad substation through a dedicated transmission line. The project's financial structure includes a loan of Rs 1,120 crore from Germany's KfW Bank and a state government investment of Rs 474 crore, the statement said. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission and other state agencies will oversee the implementation of the project, which is expected to reduce operational costs and promote the use of green energy in the state's irrigation sector. The water will benefit 1,08,197 hectares of agricultural land from tehsils like Miraj, Kavathe Mahankal, Tasgaon and Jat in Sangli districts and Sangola and Mangalvedha in Solapur district The cabinet approved the allocation of land to Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune to construct a bridge over a nullah on a nominal annual lease of Re 1. Once again, I apologise to everybody for the remarks I made. In future, I will not make any incorrect statements about national icons, he said. The actor recently also stirred a row with his comments in a podcast about Shivaji Maharaj's great escape in 1666. Solapurkar had said the iconic 17th-century warrior king escaped from Agra Fort by bribing Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's officials, and not by concealing himself in a basket of sweets, as per the popular account. After protests by Maratha outfits, Solapurkar resigned as trustee of the Pune-based Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) and said he regretted using the word ribe and hurting sentiments of those who revere Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The patient, who worked as a driver with a cab service, was admitted to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri Chinchwad on January 21, they said. An expert committee at YCMH conducted an investigation and concluded that the cause of the death was trauma to the respiratory system due to pneumonia, leading to severe difficulty in breathing, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation said in a release. The committee noted that the patient had also been diagnosed with GBS, with a nerve conduction test done on him on January 22. The immediate cause of the death was identified as severeacute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), it said. Twenty-five patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 74 from newly-added villages under PMC, 13 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas, nine from Pune rural and nine from other districts, an official said. Investigations still on to identify cause behind Guillain-Barre Syndrome spurt: ICMR chief

NEW DELHI: Director General of Indiathe n Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Dr Rajiv Bahl said that they are still investigating the cause behind the sudden spike in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra. Lots of samples have been collected and are being tested at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, to find out the common link or rather say what infection the people had suffered from two to six weeks prior to being tested with GBS, Dr Bahl said. We are yet to get any definite leads on the cause behind the spread. We are trying to identify the pathogen by testing stool and blood samples, he added. Maharashtra reported its first suspected death linked to GBS in Solapur , while the number of cases of the immunological nerve disorder in Pune has crossed over 100 . However, experts have found a possible clue diarrhoea. It was found that in most cases the common factor was diarrhoea in people who tested positive for GBS. However, Dr. Bahl said the investigators are still working on this clue. According to the reports that we received, some had contracted diarrhoea. But according to medical literature norovirus doesn't lead to GBS, he said, adding that the cause is yet to be ascertained and investigations are ongoing. As the cases spiked in Maharashtras Pune, the central government deputed a seven-member high-level team to support the state in handling GBS. The central team comprises seven experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Delhi, NIMHANS, Bengaluru, Regional Office of Health and Family Welfare and NIV, Pune. Dr Bahl further said that the cause or association of GBS is found only in 40 per cent of cases. The six types of infections which generally precede GBS have not been identified among the patients. The Campylobacter jejuni was found in four stool samples from 21 GBS patients in Pune that were tested by the NIV while norovirus was found in some, he said. Guillain-Barr Syndrome: Know the key facts about this rare disease The Union Health Ministry said they are taking proactive steps and monitoring the situation and coordinating with the state government. GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs and loose motions. Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as they weaken the immunity of patients, according to doctors. According to Dr. Praveen Gupta, Principal Director and Chief of Neurology at Fortis Hospital, GBS occurs when antibodies, created to fight bacterial or viral infections like Campylobacter jejuni or respiratory infections, cross-react with the peripheral nerves. This leads to ascending paralysis, starting in the legs and moving upward. In severe cases, patients may lose the ability to breathe due to thoracic muscle weakness and require ventilatory support. Treatments such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and plasma exchange have revolutionized outcomes, but timely intervention remains critical. Recognizing the symptoms early is crucial for effective treatment. According to Dr. Bhargavi Ramanujam, Senior Consultant in Neurology at PSRI Hospital, GBS typically starts with weakness in the legs, spreading upward. This may be accompanied by slight sensory loss, difficulty passing urine, or fluctuating blood pressure. Weakness in facial muscles can cause drooling, further signaling the onset of this serious condition. Dr. Rajas Deshpande, Consultant and Director of Neurology at Jupiter Hospital, said, Severe GBS can lead to dangerous complications like respiratory failure, blood pressure fluctuations, arrhythmias, and difficulty swallowing. Such patients often require ventilatory support, tube feeding, and intensive monitoring in the ICU. Prolonged immobility also raises the risk of infections and blood clots, making multidisciplinary care essential. Some Covid-19 patients develop Guillain-Barre Syndrome, say doctors

Pune: A man suspected to have contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has died in Maharashtra's Solapur district, while the number of cases of the immunological nerve disorder in Pune has crossed 100, health officials said on Monday. This is possibly the first death in Maharashtra suspected to have been caused by the GBS. The man, native of Solapur, had come to Pune, where he is suspected to have contracted the disease. He died in Solapur, an official said without giving more details. The total number of GBS cases in Pune on Sunday increased to 101, comprising 68 males and 33 females. Of these, 16 patients are on ventilator support. One suspected death has been reported in Solapur, the state health department official said. Meanwhile, the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and the Pune Municipal Corporation's health department continued surveillance in the affected Sinhgad Road areas here. GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs, loose motions etc. Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as they weaken the immunity of patients, according to doctors. While GBS is prevalent in both paediatric and young-age groups, it will not lead to an epidemic or pandemic, they said, adding that most patients recover fully with treatment. The state health department set up the Rapid Response Team to investigate the sudden rise in this infection after 24 suspected cases were found initially.

NCP (SP) MLA claims 'EVM tampering' behind Mahayuti win; BJP says immature comments

MUMBAI: NCP (SP) lawmaker Uttam Jankar on Sunday alleged that the Mahayuti coalition won the Maharashtra assembly polls due to EVM tampering, a claim the BJP dismissed as immature. Talking to a Marathi news channel, Jankar, who won from the Malshiras assembly constituency in Solapur district, also claimed that Deputy Chief Minister and NCP head Ajit Pawar lost the Baramati seat by 20,000 votes. As per the Election Commission, Ajit Pawar defeated NCP (SP) candidate and his nephew Yugendra Pawar in Baramati, the home turf of the Pawar family, by over 1 lakh votes. Jankar's claims were rubbished by BJP leader Pravin Darekar. He said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which comprises NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, is yet to recover from its poll debacle. Jankar claimed that as per actual results, 77 seats have gone to the BJP, 12 to NCP and 18 to Shiv Sena and 3 to Independents. The Mahayuti of BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena won the polls due to EVM (electronic voting machine) tampering, he said. Jankar's comments are immature. He should substantiate them with facts, Darekar said. In the recently held assembly polls, Mahayuti won 230 of the 288 assembly seats. While the BJP pocketed 132 seats, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 57 and NCP bagged 41 seats. By sharp contrast, MVA was reduced to only 46 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) won 10, while Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena (UBT) and Congress got only 20 and 16 seats respectively.

Rs 500 paddy bonus lures Maharashtra, Karnataka suppliers

Nizamabad: The introduction of a Rs 500 bonus for paddy has inadvertently fuelled illegal transportation of paddy from neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka into Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. Despite efforts by officials to strengthen inter-state borders, middlemen remain pivotal in facilitating the smuggling operations. Previously, farmers transported paddy to Maharashtra seeking higher prices. Under the guise of supporting farmers, certain traders diverted paddy from Nizamabad and Kamareddy to districts such as Nanded, Latur, Bheed, Parbhani, Jalna, Pune, Solapur, Mumbai, and other regions in Maharashtra. With the new Rs 500 bonus incentive, traders have started moving paddy back from Maharashtras Nanded district to Telanganas Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. Civil supplies, revenue, and police officials have intensified coordination to block the influx of paddy from Maharashtra and Karnataka. However, these measures have largely failed due to the involvement of corrupt employees at key inter-state entry points. Traders exploit these vulnerabilities to smuggle paddy through locations including Salabathpur, Pothangal, Birkur, Salura, Kandakurthi, and Khandgaon.
