Sharad Pawar questions Bihar pre-poll fund transfers, says he will discuss the issue with Opposition leaders

PUNE: NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar has said he intends to raise the issue of pre-election fund transfers to women under a government scheme in Bihar during his discussions with Opposition leaders. His remarks came days after the ruling NDA secured a landslide victory in the Bihar elections by decimating the Opposition Mahagathbandhan bloc. The poll outcome turned out different from our expectations; however, one has to accept the mandate of the people. Everyone saw that in Maharashtra and Bihar, schemes like Ladki Bahin and direct benefit transfers of Rs 10,000 to women were rolled out just before the polls. Such things were never witnessed earlier, Pawar told reporters in Solapur on Sunday. He was referring to the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana , which provides money to a woman member of each family for setting up a business in Bihar. Under the scheme, Rs 10,000 each was transferred to the bank accounts of women in Bihar ahead of the state polls. Pawar said he had heard that money is distributed during local body elections, but a government providing Rs 10,000 directly to women ahead of the state elections is something new. If the deposition of Rs 10,000 was the reason behind the (NDA's victory in) Bihar elections, then we need to think over it. The Parliament session is scheduled to start on December 1.During this period, we will discuss this issue by bringing together key Opposition leaders and chalk out a response. At least, I am thinking in this direction, he said. Earlier, Pawar had wondered how the Election Commission allowed the distribution of funds during the poll process in Bihar.

Pune techie arrested by Anti-Terrorism Squad over suspected link with Al-Qaeda

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), on Monday, arrested a 33-year-old software engineer, identified as Zubair Hangargekar, from Punes Kondhwa area for his alleged links with Pakistan-based Al-Qaeda and involvement in the radicalisation of youth. According to ATS officials, Zubir Hangargekar, who had been under surveillance for nearly a month, was taken into custody early on Monday and produced before a special UAPA court, which remanded him to police custody till November 4. Mr Hangargekar has been booked under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Hangargekar is a B Tech graduate, software tester ,and database developer working with a Kalyaninagar-based IT firm, hails from Solapur and lives in Pune with his wife and two children. ATS teams tracked him down to Pune Railway Station upon his return from an event in Chennai. Hewas detained along with his associates in Pune. They were in Chennai to attend a social function. The ATS official say, the arrest is connected to an ongoing investigation stemming from raids conducted on October 9 across multiple locations in Pune, during which 19 laptops and 40 mobile phones were seized for forensic analysis. The searches had hinted at the existence of a wider terror network involving radicalised individuals. The ATS said the investigation into Hangargekars activities is underway, and more arrests could follow as digital evidence from seized devices is analysed. A senior ATS officer said searches at Hangargekars residence led to the recovery of incriminating Al-Qaeda literature and digital material used for radicalisation. The officer added that investigators are probing whether the accused was in contact with Al-Qaeda operatives or members of other extremist organisations, and what he intended to do with the material in his possession. The arrest follows a series of recent operations targeting radical networks in India. Earlier this month, two individuals, Md Adnan Khan alias Abu Muharib (19) from Delhi and Adnan Khan alias Abu Mohammad (20) from Bhopal, were arrested in an Islamic State (IS)-related case. Investigations revealed that the duo had been radicalised online and were reporting to a handler based in Syria, indicating the continued online resurgence of global terror groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda. As per intelligence officials, while these groups lack strong physical bases in India, their digital outreach and radicalisation efforts have intensified, with India-focused operations allegedly coordinated from Syria.

Maharashtra woman doctors suicide: Main accused sub-inspector arrested

MUMBAI: Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane, the main accused in the rape and harassment case linked to the suspected suicide of a lady doctor in Maharashtra , surrendered on his own at Phaltan rural police station on Saturday late at night. The suspended PSI is the main accused in this case.He was on a run for the last 36 hours. His last location was traced at Pandharpur in Solapur district. He will be produced in the court today. The Satara Police had on Saturday, early morning, arrested a techie, Prashant Bankar , the second accused. The Phaltan court granted the police custody of the accused till October 28. Gopal Badane was on night duty at Phaltan police station when the rape and suicide of the doctor surfaced. Following a public outrage, Badane ran away and was absconding for the last 36 hours. It was alleged that the police were helping Badane to be in safe locations. Following the incident and public outrage, Satara district police had formed two teams, one of which arrested Prashant Bankar from a friends farmhouse in Satara on Saturday morning. Maharashtra doctor who died by suicide had complained against MP, police; opposition seeks SIT probe A 26-year-old woman doctor in Phaltan, Satara district, Maharashtra, died by suicide after leaving a seven-line note on her palm. In it, she accused police sub-inspector Gopal Banade of repeatedly raping and sexually exploiting her, and alleged that her landlords son, Prashant Bankar, harassed and tortured her. She stated that both mentally tortured her for four months. She also alleged in her earlier statement before an inquiry committee that she was pressurised to change medical reports and give fake fitness certificates. Meanwhile, Bankar's family members refuted all allegations, claiming he is innocent and was framed in this case. They said they are confident that once the case is probed fairly, the truth will come out. The suicide note stated that PSI Gopal Badane raped her four times. It also alleged that, besides being sexually assaulted by the police officer, she was pressured by powerful individuals, including an MP and his aides, to issue fake medical fitness certificates for the accused. She wrote that the harassment escalated when she refused to comply. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident very painful. The doctor had to write on her palm before committing suicide; it is a shameful incident, he said. He added that the government will not spare anyone, and all the guilty will be arrested and punished. Oppositions should not play politics over this tragic issue. They should respect the sentiment, said Fadnavis. Ambads Danve, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC and leader of the Opposition, state legislative council, sharing the complaint letter of the lady doctor on the social media platform X, said that the lady doctor has ended her life due to the failed and corrupt system. The letter shared by Danve revealed that despite repeatedly complaining to senior officers by the deceased lady doctor to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), no action was taken against the culprit. He said that the lady doctor had complained several times about how she was harassed and tortured by being called and pressuring her to change postmortem reports and giving fake fitness certificates. The local Lok Sabha MP and BJP MLA are also harassing this lady doctor; therefore, the call records of this doctor and their conversation have to be probed to get the truth and facts of this case. The call records' details will reveal many things. But Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies are busy in politics and buying votes by distributing lollipops and chocolates. The ruling party beats drums about their Ladli Bahin scheme, but no sister is safe and secure in Maharashtra; this is the harsh reality of the state, Danve alleged.

Maharashtra rains: Fadnavis reviews relief ops, urges evacuation in vulnerable areas

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday reviewed the rainfall situation and ongoing relief operations in eight Marathwada districts and Solapur, and directed officials to intensify field-level efforts. Incessant rains battered several parts of Marathwada on Saturday, cutting off villages and inundating low-lying roads and bridges in the traditionally drought-prone region. Solapur, located in western Maharashtra, has also witnessed heavy rains and crop damage. With water discharge from dams being increased due to heavy rainfall, Fadnavis stressed the need to focus on evacuating people from vulnerable areas, a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said on Sunday. As per the CMO statement, Fadnavis held discussions with collectors of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Dharashiv, Parbhani and Solapur districts and took stock of the situation arising from heavy rains and floods. All officials must remain on the ground and closely monitor relief and rescue operations, he said. Taking note of reports of fodder shortage in some areas, the chief minister directed the immediate supply of fodder for livestock. He reviewed the discharge situation of dams across the state and directed the Water Resources Department to coordinate closely with local administrations and remain on high alert. Due to around 150 mm of rainfall in the catchment and dam area of the Jayakwadi project, 1,25,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water is being released into the Godavari River, which may increase up to 1.5 lakh cusecs, it said. From the Majalgaon dam, 41,701 cusecs of water were being released, which has been reduced from the earlier 95,000 cusecs. Amid heavy rainfall in Dharashiv, Solapur, Ahilyanagar and Beed districts, 75,000 cusecs of water were being discharged from the Sina Kolegaon dam, while in some places the discharge was 60,000 cusecs. Additionally, 1 lakh cusecs of water were being released from the Ujani dam, the statement said. The CMO, in a series of posts on X, said that 4,002 people have been rescued from flood-affected areas in Solapur so far, while around 6,500 have been housed in relief camps, where arrangements have been made for food, water, and medical care. Damage assessments of affected houses are underway, and immediate assistance of Rs 10,000, along with 10 kg of rice and 10 kg of wheat, is being provided to each affected family, it said. The administration has coordinated with local entrepreneurs and community leaders to organise relief measures, establishing district and taluka-level relief centres, and health camps will be conducted under the local administration. As many as 17 dams in Beed have reached their full capacity, while two reservoirs are around 90 per cent full, with water being released only from Majalgaon, the CMO said. Several villages in Wadwani taluka have been cut off, and essential assistance is being provided in these areas. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army are deployed in Beed for rescue operations. Heavy rainfall affected at least 48 areas in Beed district on Saturday, with villages along riverbanks being put on alert. At least 60 people have been relocated from Ashti, it stated. As per the CMO statement, 2,567 families have been moved to safer locations this month, and 10 people have lost their lives; financial aid has been provided to eight of the affected families. Heavy rainfall affected around 26 areas in Jalna, and 48 out of 51 irrigation projects in the district are overflowing. Rescue operations have been carried out in Bhoypur, Arjunnagar, Lalbagh, and Khandasari, where 225 people were relocated, and 52 others were rescued from flood-affected areas. Since June, nine people have lost their lives in the district, the post stated. In Nanded, heavy rainfall lashed 23 areas on Saturday and 13 on Sunday, inundating catchment areas of the Godavari, Manjara, and Manyad rivers, and 67 people were rescued. At least 424 people are in 16 relief camps set up in the district, the CMO stated. Damage assessments indicate that 56 houses were destroyed, and immediate assistance is being provided to the affected families. More than 500 people have been evacuated from Ahmadpur, Nivadi, Udgir, Chakur, Renapur, and Jalkot areas of Latur and housed in relief camps. Approximately 60 roads and bridges were inundated earlier, but they have now been cleared for traffic. Although the situation is under control in Latur, NDRF teams remain on standby. In Parbhani, 1,386 people were relocated due to heavy rains over the last few days. The district in Marathwada has reported six deaths due to rain-related incidents since June this year. The CMO tweeted that nearly 23 areas in the Hingoli district have been affected by heavy rainfall, and 10 villages were cut off, but the water is gradually receding. At least 13 people have lost their lives, and financial assistance has been provided to their families. A relief fund of Rs 231.27 crore has been allocated for distribution in the district. According to the CMO, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district has received 818.5 mm of rainfall so far, significantly higher than the average of 581.7 mm. Around 68 revenue circles have reported heavy rainfall. In Dharashiv, six villages have been cut off due to heavy rains, and 3,615 people have been safely relocated to safer locations, the CMO said.
