Nagpur violence was 'government-sponsored': Maratha quota activist Jarange

MUMBAI: Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday claimed that violence in Nagpur was sponsored by the Mahayuti government and blamed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the unrest in the city. They (government) are giving protection to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's grave (located in Chhatrapati Samabhajinagar district), and at the same time there is a demand (from right-wing outfits) for its removal, Jarange said, adding that people should see through it. Violence erupted in central Nagpur on Monday evening , with stones hurled at police amid rumours that the holy book of a community was burnt during an agitation by a right-wing body for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. CM Fadnavis says Nagpur violence premeditated, 'Chhava' film fueled public anger This riot has been sponsored by government and Devendra Fadnavis, Jarange alleged while talking to reporters at Ellora in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. They now don't see those who insulted Shivaji Maharaj, he said, in a veiled reference to actor Rahul Solapurkar and a Nagpur resident who have been accused of insulting the Maratha king. The activist sought to know what happens to their Hindutva in such matters. Doing such things when the local body elections are around is not good, Jarange said. If they want to remove the Aurangzeb's grave, they are in power at the Centre and in the state. If the Congress made a mistake of protecting the structure earlier, now the rulers have a chance to correct it. This (violence) is just being done to make the poor people fight amongst themselves. The poor people should remain alert, he said. If they want to remove the grave, they can do it in a minute, the activist said. But the grave is given police protection by the state at the same time. People have the brain to understand this. The local governing body elections are around the corner. They (ruling parties) want to win the elections. They cannot solve issues plaguing the people, farmers and women, he claimed.

SP MLA Azmi's remarks on Aurangzeb rock legislature; members demand his suspension

MUMBAI: The issue of SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi's remarks eulogising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb rocked both houses of the Maharashtra legislature on Tuesday, with members of the ruling Mahayuti demanding his suspension and charging him with treason. Both houses were adjourned over the issue. The development came on a day when the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi planned to corner the government over the resignation of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde. As proceedings of both the houses began, the Mahayuti members started raising slogans seeking action against Azmi, who is the Samajwadi Party's state president. They claimed Azmi was a descendent of Aurangzeb, who tortured Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and brutally killed him. Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena head Eknath Shinde led the attack on Azmi both in the legislative council and assembly. In the council, the former CM said Azmi also made objectionable statements in the past against Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Abu Azmi is purposely insulting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and (his son) Chhatrapati Sambhaji. Sambhaji's Maharaj's bravery and Aurangzeb's cruelty will give goosebumps to people, Shinde said in the council. Aurangzeb tortured Sambhaji Maharaj in an inhuman way. Abu Azmi referred to Aurangzeb as an able administrator who built temples but he razed Kashi Vishveshwar temple, Shinde said. The Mughal emperor not only killed Hindus but also people from other religions, the deputy CM said. Aurangzeb lost even after he won, but Sambhaji, through his bravery, won even even after his sacrifice. He (Aurangzeb) is a demon. Even a true Muslim will not forgive the progeny of traitors. It is wrong to eulogise Aurangzeb, Shinde said. He also demanded that Azmi's membership of the legislative assembly be revoked. No one will tolerate the act of eulogising Aurangzeb, the Shiv Sena leader said. In the assembly, Shinde dubbed Azmi a raitor and said had no right to sit in the House. He asked SP MLA Raees Shaikh to watch the recent Hindi film 'Chhaava', which has documented the bravery and sacrifice of Sambhaji Maharaj. See the torture Sambhaji Maharaj endured for 40 days. Aurangzeb asked him to change his religion, he said. Praising Aurangzeb is an insult of the country's national heroes, Shinde said. Sambhaji Maharaj won 70 battles in nine years, he said, adding that Aurangzeb demolished temples and killed his own family. Industries Minister Uday Samant (Shiv Sena) reiterated the demand that Azmi be suspended from the House and be booked for treason. We cannot tolerate praise of a person who harassed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and tortured Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, he said. Atul Bhatkalkar (BJP) demanded that Azmi be booked for treason and suspended from the assembly for the budget session. Shiv Sena minister Gulabrao Patil also demanded action against Azmi. Sudhir Mungantiwar (BJP) demanded that Aurangazeb's grave be demolished. Amid the uproar, opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) member Bhaskar Jadhav, who tried to speak on an adjournment notice submitted by him in the legislative assembly, termed developments in the House as drama. The assembly proeedings were adjourned three times after din over the issue, and later adjourned for the day. Azmi had said that during Aurangzeb's reign, India's border reached Afghanistan and Burma (Myanmar). Our GDP accounted for 24 per cent (of the world GDP) and India was called a golden sparrow (during his regime), claimed the MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency in Mumbai. Opposition can stoop down to any level in bid to 'eradicate' Sanatan Dharma: BJP Asked about the fight between Aurangzeb and Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Azmi had termed it a political battle. In the legislative council, Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve said not only Azmi but those insulting national icons, including Chhatrapati Shivaji, should be punished, and referred to statements of actor Rahul Solapurkar and former journalist Prashant Koratkar. Council Chairman Ram Shinde said the government should take strict action against whoever has spoken against national icons and Chhatrapati Shivaji. Following din over Azmi's comments, the Upper House was briefly adjourned twice and then for the day. In a related development, the Mumbai Police began a probe into a case registered against Azmi over his remarks. An FIR was registered on Monday against Azmi by police in neighbouring Thane on a complaint of Lok Sabha member Naresh Mhaske for allegedly attempting to hurt religious feelings. The Thane police subsequently transferred the FIR to Mumbai, where a fresh case was registered at Marine Drive police station on Tuesday. The Mumbai police have registered the case against Azmi under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religion or religious beliefs), 302 (uttering words with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) and 356(1) & 356(2) (defamation), he said.

CM Fadnavis hails Shivaji Maharaj as management guru, says state won't forgive those who insult him

PUNE: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary on Wednesday, hailing him as a management guru and an able administrator who set an example of running a welfare state. Those who try to insult Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be shown their eal place and the state will not forgive them, Fadnavis told reporters after paying homage to the Maratha king at Shivneri Fort in Pune district. Shivaji Maharaj not only established 'Swarajya', but also ignited a sense of national pride, he said. The legendary warrior king was born on February 19, 1630 in Shivneri in the district's Junnar tehsil. Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar attended various programmes to mark Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary, including the 'cradle ceremony' at the Shivneri Fort. A large number of followers of the Maratha king also gathered at the fort to take part in his 395th birth anniversary event. Addressing the gathering at the fort, Fadnavis said Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not just a warrior, but also an able administrator who set an example of running a welfare state. He was a management guru in the truest sense, the chief minister added. Fadnavis said that setting foot on the land of Shivneri evokes the inspiration of 'Swarajya', and it is this very spirit that draws people to this place time and again. When many kings and kingdoms accepted Mughal rule, Mata Jijau envisioned Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the leader who would end the exploitation and tyranny, guiding the people towards Swarajya, he said. With the determination and values instilled by his mother, Shivaji Maharaj united people from all communities, wielded his sword, and built an army of Mavalas. He not only established 'Swarajya', but also ignited a sense of national pride, the CM said. Fadnavis stressed the importance of preserving Shivaji Maharaj's forts, saying they hold a greater significance than temples. We are working tirelessly to ensure the conservation of these forts by removing barriers. A task force has been created to clear encroachments from all these sites. Come what may, these encroachments will be removed, he asserted. The CM also announced that 12 forts from Maharashtra have been nominated for the UNESCO's World Heritage Site status under an initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the coming days, a team of the Maharashtra government, led by minister Ashish Shelar, will make a presentation highlighting these forts as exemplary architectural marvels at the UNESCO event in Paris, he said. Later, responding to a question on controversial remarks about the warrior king made by an actor recently, Fadnavis said, Those who try to insult Shivaji Maharaj will be shown their real place. If some people behave in such a manner, they will not be forgiven by the state or Shiv Premis (followers of Shivaji Maharaj). Notably, actor Rahul Solapurkar had stirred a row with his comments about Shivaji Maharaj. On the demand to make the Vicky Kaushal-starrer movie Chhava, based on the life of Shivaji Maharaj's son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, tax-free in Maharashtra, Fadnavis said the state government already abolished the entertainment tax on film tickets in 2017. We do not have the entertainment tax now, but we will take all possible steps to promote the film so that the incredible history of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's valour reaches the maximum number of people, he said. Asked if the government plans to set up a committee of historians to resolve disputes regarding history, Fadnavis said such disputes can be settled if they remain apolitical. If there is no political angle, these disputes can be resolved. However, if politics is involved, they may never be settled. In the past, we have formed several committees that provided recommendations, and the government has taken decisions based on those recommendations, he said. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, in his speech at the Shivneri Fort, said special attention was being given to the restoration work of Shivneri, the birthplace of the Maratha king. All these forts in the state are places of inspiration and we derive power and energy from them, and the state government is giving special attention to their restoration, he said. Shinde said there are many ideals for youth, but Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be the greatest ideal for generations to come.

Actor Rahul Solapurkar calls Ambedkar 'brahmin'; apologises for remark

PUNE: Actor Rahul Solapurkar has sparked a fresh row by describing Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar as a Brahmin in the Vedic context of gaining knowledge, days after his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj triggered protests. Amid the backlash, Solapurkar apologised on Sunday, expressing regret over his choice of words concerning Ambedkar, the social reformer and chief architect of India's Constitution. In a video that surfaced on social media on Sunday, the actor claimed Ambedkar was born to Ramji Sakpal in a Bahujan family and was later adopted by his teacher who gave him his surname. In the Vedas, it is said that a man who gains knowledge becomes a Brahmin. In that sense, Ambedkar was Brahmin because he gained knowledge, said the actor, who has appeared in several Marathi films. NCP (SP) legislator Jitendra Awhad hit out at Solapurkar over his remarks. Sharing a video on X, Awhad said, Rahul Solapurkar has now crossed all limits. He should be beaten with shoes wherever he is seen. I have given multiple lectures on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Babasaheb Ambedkar. I am completely unaware of why such videos are being circulated on social media. Once again, I apologise to everybody for the remarks I made. In future, I will not make any incorrect statements about national icons, he said. The actor recently also stirred a row with his comments in a podcast about Shivaji Maharaj's great escape in 1666. Solapurkar had said the iconic 17th-century warrior king escaped from Agra Fort by bribing Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's officials, and not by concealing himself in a basket of sweets, as per the popular account. After protests by Maratha outfits, Solapurkar resigned as trustee of the Pune-based Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) and said he regretted using the word ribe and hurting sentiments of those who revere Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

An expert committee at YCMH conducted an investigation and concluded that the cause of the death was trauma to the respiratory system due to pneumonia, leading to severe difficulty in breathing, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation said in a release. The committee noted that the patient had also been diagnosed with GBS, with a nerve conduction test done on him on January 22. The immediate cause of the death was identified as severeacute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), it said. Twenty-five patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 74 from newly-added villages under PMC, 13 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas, nine from Pune rural and nine from other districts, an official said. Samples being tested to identify reason behind spread of GBS: ICMR chief

NEW DELHI: The cause behind the recent spurt in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune is still under investigation, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl said on Tuesday. Samples of people infected with GBS are being tested to identify the reason behind the spread of the disease, he said. The ICMR chief said that GBS mostly is a post-infection syndrome which usually manifests itself two to six weeks after a person gets an infection. Lot of samples have been taken and are being tested at the NIV Pune to find out the common link or rather say what infection they had suffered two to six weeks prior to being diagnosed with GBS. We are yet to get any definite leads on the cause behind the spread, he said. We are trying to identify the pathogen by testing stool and blood samples, etc, he said. Dr Bahl further said that the cause or association of GBS is found only in 40 per cent cases. The six types of infections which generally precedes GBS have not been identified among the patients. The Campylobacter jejuni was found in four stool samples from 21 GBS patients in Pune that were tested by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) while norovirus was found in some, the ICMR chief said. According to the reports that we received, some had contracted diarrhoea. But according to medical literature norovirus doesn't lead to GBS, he said. The cause is yet to be ascertained and investigations are on, he said. The Union Health Ministry has already deputed a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Pune to aid state authorities in instituting interventions and managing the spurt in suspected and confirmed cases of GBS in the city. The central team sent to Maharashtra comprises seven experts from National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Delhi, NIMHANS Bengaluru, Regional Office of Health & Family Welfare and NIV, Pune. Three experts from NIV, Pune were already supporting the local authorities. The team is working closely with the state health departments and taking stock of on-ground situation. It will recommend necessary public health interventions. The central team has been tasked with monitoring the situation and coordinating with the state. Maharashtra reported its first suspected death linked to GBS in Solapur, while the number of cases of the immunological nerve disorder in Pune has crossed 100. The man had come to Pune, where he is suspected to have contracted the disease, and died in Solapur, an official said without giving more details. As per the Maharashtra Public Health Department, Pune has reported 111 GBS cases, of which 30 are in the radius of five km. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the situation at a meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday. GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs and loose motions. Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as they weaken the immunity of patients, according to doctors. While GBS is prevalent in both paediatric and young-age groups, it will not lead to an epidemic or pandemic, they said, adding that most patients recover fully with treatment.

While GBS is prevalent in both paediatric and young-age groups, it will not lead to an epidemic or pandemic, they said, adding that most patients recover fully with treatment. The state health department set up the Rapid Response Team to investigate the sudden rise in this infection after 24 suspected cases were found initially.

NCP (SP) MLA claims 'EVM tampering' behind Mahayuti win; BJP says immature comments

MUMBAI: NCP (SP) lawmaker Uttam Jankar on Sunday alleged that the Mahayuti coalition won the Maharashtra assembly polls due to EVM tampering, a claim the BJP dismissed as immature. Talking to a Marathi news channel, Jankar, who won from the Malshiras assembly constituency in Solapur district, also claimed that Deputy Chief Minister and NCP head Ajit Pawar lost the Baramati seat by 20,000 votes. As per the Election Commission, Ajit Pawar defeated NCP (SP) candidate and his nephew Yugendra Pawar in Baramati, the home turf of the Pawar family, by over 1 lakh votes. Jankar's claims were rubbished by BJP leader Pravin Darekar. He said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which comprises NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, is yet to recover from its poll debacle. Jankar claimed that as per actual results, 77 seats have gone to the BJP, 12 to NCP and 18 to Shiv Sena and 3 to Independents. The Mahayuti of BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena won the polls due to EVM (electronic voting machine) tampering, he said. Jankar's comments are immature. He should substantiate them with facts, Darekar said. In the recently held assembly polls, Mahayuti won 230 of the 288 assembly seats. While the BJP pocketed 132 seats, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 57 and NCP bagged 41 seats. By sharp contrast, MVA was reduced to only 46 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) won 10, while Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena (UBT) and Congress got only 20 and 16 seats respectively.

Rs 500 paddy bonus lures Maharashtra, Karnataka suppliers

Nizamabad: The introduction of a Rs 500 bonus for paddy has inadvertently fuelled illegal transportation of paddy from neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka into Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. Despite efforts by officials to strengthen inter-state borders, middlemen remain pivotal in facilitating the smuggling operations. Previously, farmers transported paddy to Maharashtra seeking higher prices. Under the guise of supporting farmers, certain traders diverted paddy from Nizamabad and Kamareddy to districts such as Nanded, Latur, Bheed, Parbhani, Jalna, Pune, Solapur, Mumbai, and other regions in Maharashtra. With the new Rs 500 bonus incentive, traders have started moving paddy back from Maharashtras Nanded district to Telanganas Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. Civil supplies, revenue, and police officials have intensified coordination to block the influx of paddy from Maharashtra and Karnataka. However, these measures have largely failed due to the involvement of corrupt employees at key inter-state entry points. Traders exploit these vulnerabilities to smuggle paddy through locations including Salabathpur, Pothangal, Birkur, Salura, Kandakurthi, and Khandgaon.

Maharashtra village passes resolution to use ballot papers in future polls

Pune: Kolewadi gram sabha in Maharashtra's Satara district has resolved to conduct future elections on ballot papers, becoming the second village in the state to pass a resolution against EVMs. The village comes under the Karad (South) assembly constituency, earlier represented by senior Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. He lost the electoral contest in November against BJP candidate Atul Bhosale by 39,355 votes. The resolution was passed after residents of Kolewadi expressed doubts over the votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines. This resolution was passed days after a section of villagers from Markadwadi in Solapur's Malshiras constituency tried to conduct mock e-polling using ballot papers expressing doubt on the credibility of EVMs. Their bid was thwarted by the administration and police, leading to the registration of cases. The resolution was passed on December 2 in the gram sabha meeting respecting the sentiments of villagers who demanded that upcoming elections be held on ballot papers and not on EVMs, Shankarrao Patil, husband of the village sarpanch Ratnamala Patil, said on Tuesday. Patil said villagers were surprised as Prithviraj Chavan failed to get a desired lead of votes in Kolewadi during assembly elections. A Gram Sevak also confirmed the passing of the resolution. The Kolewadi gram sabha passed a resolution stating that future elections should be conducted through ballot papers without EVMs, a villager said. He said the Election Commission should revert to the ballot paper mechanism in view of a collective demand. We have resolved that the people of Kolewadi will vote only if the process is conducted using ballot papers. We won't vote if EVMs are used in future elections, he said. If the administration doesn't allow us to vote on ballot papers, we will boycott the polling process, he added. Satara district collector Jitendra Dudi said his office had not received a copy of the purported resolution from the gram panchayat. Since we have not received the copy, it would not be appropriate for me to comment. Once we receive the copy, we will take the required measures, he said. PTI SPK NSK 12101526 NNNN

Maharashtra Congress Chief Pushes for Ballot Paper Voting.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole has urged the Supreme Court and the Election Commission to take note of the growing public demand for ballot paper voting in view of doubts about the mandate in assembly elections. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has upped the ante against electronic voting machines (EVMs) after the BJP-led Mahayuti won 230 out of 288 seats in the Maharashtra assembly elections. Patole on Sunday claimed the Mahayuti victory didn't reflect the mandate of the people. There is a widespread confusion among people about the new state government. A strong sentiment suggests that the government doesn't reflect the people's mandate, Patole told reporters. Several leaders from opposition parties, including NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, visited Markadwadi village in Solapur district to express solidarity with villagers who had tried to hold a mock epoll using ballot papers while questioning the EVM credibility. This public sentiment is not confined to Markadwadi but resonates across villages in Maharashtra. A demand for conducting voting through ballot papers is growing, with village sabhas passing resolutions to this effect, Patole claimed. He appealed to the Election Commission and the Supreme Court to take cognisance of this public sentiment. The Congress leader, who won the electoral contest by a wafer-thin margin, said the doubt among electors about their vote reaching the candidate of their choice should be resolved. Residents of Markadwadi had resolved to conduct a mock re-poll using ballot papers, but the government, with the help of the Election Commission and police, suppressed their efforts and filed cases against them, he alleged. Patole sought the Election Commission's clarification on he addition of 7.6 million votes. They have failed to provide a satisfactory explanation. Manipulating votes is akin to the daylight murder of democracy. If such dissatisfaction arises in a democracy, it must be addressed. The Opposition will fight for this demand in the legislature and on the streets, Patole added. The Supreme Court last month dismissed a plea seeking to revert to paper ballot voting in elections in the country, saying allegations of tampering with EVMs raked up only when people lose polls. What happens is, when you win the election, EVMs are not tampered with. When you lose the election, EVMs are tampered (with), remarked a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and P B Varale. Apart from ballot paper voting, the plea sought several directions, including a directive to the Election Commission to disqualify candidates for a minimum of five years if found guilty of distributing money, liquor or other material inducement to the voters during polls.

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has thrown his weight behind villagers in Solapur, Maharashtra, who are demanding a repoll using ballot papers after raising doubts about the accuracy of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Pawar met with villagers in Markadwadi, where a police case was filed against over 200 people for attempting to conduct an unauthorized re-election. He expressed support for their concerns, claiming that the villagers were he ones who thought of conducting polls using ballot papers. Pawar criticized the police action, calling it a restriction on the villagers' right to assemble and vowing to raise the issue with the Chief Minister, the state Chief Electoral Officer, the Prime Minister, and the Election Commission of India.

Mahayuti leaders accuse opposition of misleading public over EVMs

MUMBAI: The ruling Mahayuti alliance on Sunday accused opposition leaders of misleading the public regarding electronic voting machines (EVMs) instead of accepting their losses in the Maharashtra assembly elections. The elections held on 20 November saw the Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, achieve a landslide victory by winning 230 out of 288 assembly seats. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), consisting of the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), managed to secure only 46 seats. The opposition has since alleged irregularities with the EVMs and called for a return to ballot paper voting. Speaking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant criticised the opposition for what he described as their double standards. It is because of the MVA's double standards that the Samajwadi Party has parted from the alliance. Yesterday, they boycotted the oath-taking ceremony, and today, they will hopefully take oath as members, which will again highlight their double standards, he said. Samant further accused the opposition of fabricating a narrative to mislead the public rather than accepting their electoral defeat. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule also targeted NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, accusing the veteran leader of spreading misinformation. We respect Pawar, but he is spreading falsehood. He is confusing people. The opposition is hiding its failure, Bawankule said in response to Pawar's comments expressing surprise over the opposition receiving more votes yet winning fewer seats. Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad noted that opposition members had protested against the curfew and arrests in Markadwadi village in the Malshiras assembly constituency in Solapur. He highlighted the villagers' demand for a repoll using ballot papers as a key issue. The Mahayuti leaders maintained that the opposition should take responsibility for its losses rather than questioning the credibility of EVMs.

NCP (SP) leader, 88 villagers booked for bid to conduct 're-election' with ballot papers in Maharashtra

PUNE: Police have registered a case against NCP (SP) leader Uttam Jankar and 88 others after a section of people from Markadwadi village in Solapur district and nearby areas attempted to conduct a e-election using ballot papers, an official said. Prior to this, police had registered a case against more than 200 persons for allegedly defying prohibitory orders and trying to conduct the e-election. On Wednesday, Jankar, who won the Malshiras assembly seat in the recent Maharashtra elections, and others were charged with unlawful assembly and disobeying orders issued by a public servant, among other sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said. Markadwadi village comes under the Malshiras assembly segment. On Tuesday morning, 250 to 300 persons gathered in the Markadwadi village to conduct a epoll by wilfully defying prohibitory orders and encouraging others to participate in the unauthorised polling process, the police said. The idea of conducting a e-election with ballot papers was floated after villagers raised doubts about the number of votes counted through EVMs from a polling booth in Markadwadi in the recently-held state elections. However, they relented and gave up their plan after the police's intervention. Jankar had defeated BJP's Ram Satpute by 13,147 votes. Though Jankar won the seat, Markadwadi residents claimed the quantum of votes polled by the NCP (SP) leader was less compared with Satpute, expressing doubt about the EVMs. The Solapur district administration had denied permission to villagers to conduct the e-poll on ballot papers and imposed prohibitory orders banning unlawful assembly. The villagers, however, made arrangements for e-polling on Tuesday morning and placed the polling material. Police held meetings with Jankar and villagers and explained to them the legal procedures and warned of registering cases, officials had said. Later, the residents relented and cancelled their plans to conduct the epoll.

Maharashtra village cancels repoll plan with ballot papers after police intervention

Solapur: A group of villagers from Maharashtra's Malshrias assembly segment insisting on a e-election with ballot papers relented on Tuesday and gave up their plan after police intervention, the NCP (SP) winning candidate from the seat said. A senior police official said they had cautioned the villagers that legal action would be initiated if they went ahead with their polling plan. Earlier, residents of Markadwadi village under Malshiras segment in Solapur district had put up banners claiming a epoll will be held on December 3. The village comes under the Malshiras assembly constituency, where NCP (SP) candidate Uttam Jankar defeated BJP's Ram Satpute by 13,147 votes in the November 20 state polls, the results of which were declared on November 2. Though Jankar won the seat, Markadwadi residents claimed he polled less votes in their village against Satpute, which was not possible, and cast doubt on the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The Malshiras sub-divisional magistrate on Monday imposed prohibitory orders, under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, from December 2 to 5 in the area to avoid any conflict or law and order situation due to the epoll plan of locals, an official earlier said. Heavy police security was deployed as a group of locals at the village made arrangements on Tuesday morning for the epoll with the use of ballot papers. Later, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Malshiras division) Narayan Shirgavkar said they had a detailed meeting with the villagers and NCP (SP) leader Jankar. We explained to them procedures in the law and also warned that even if one vote is cast, cases will be registered, Shirgavkar said. Jankar said he had a meeting with police officials and also a discussion with villagers, following which they cancelled the epoll plan. We had a meeting with police officials who said they will seize all the material at the polling station and will file cases, the NCP (SP) leader said. After the meeting with police, we had a discussion with villagers. Their opinion was that if the administration is not allowing the polling to take place, there will be chaos and conflict between police and residents and as a result, the process will not take place and people will leave the polling station, he said. Considering the stand of the police administration, the villagers decided to stop the polling process, Jankar said. However, we will continue our protest by other means. We will try to take this issue to various authorities such as the Election Commission and judiciary and we will not stop until we get justice, he said. Earlier, local resident Ranjit Markad claimed the village had 2,000 eligible voters on the polling day, and 1,900 of them exercised their franchise. The village always supported Jankar in the past, but this time, as per the counting of votes through EVMs, Jankar got 843 votes while BJP candidate Satpute polled 1,003 votes. This is not possible and we do not trust these EVM numbers, that is why we decided to conduct the repoll through ballot papers, said Markad. The EVM results are doubtful and a delegation of villagers had approached the district administration for a repoll using ballot papers, but the request was rejected, another villager said. In the recently-concluded Maharashtra polls, the Mahayuti won 230 of the state's 288 seats, with the BJP emerging victorious in 132, followed by Shiv Sena in 57 and Ajit Pawar's NCP in 41 seats. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP), managed to get just 46 seats.
