APSFL MD rapped, three top officials terminated for alleged intentional delays in order execution

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh State FiberNet Limited (APSFL) Chairman GV Reddy terminated three higher officials of the organisation for their alleged intentional delays in executing orders, which he claimed had crippled the profit-making organisation and pushed it toward closure. The officials removed from service include Chief Technology Officer Pappu Satya Rama Bharadwaja, Business Operations Head Gandhamsetti Suresh, and Procurement Assistant Manager Shashank Haidar Khan. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, GV Reddy expressed concerns over the delay in issuing termination letters for 410 employees who were hired without proper orders, resulting in a loss of over Rs 1 crore in salaries for December, January, and February. Despite his orders to terminate the employees, the letters were not issued, he said. GV Reddy also criticised Managing Director (MD) K Dinesh Kumar for negligence in issuing orders regarding employee terminations, vendor connections, and administrative sanctions. He questioned why the higher officials failed to comply with his directives and did not inform him about pending GST bills. The GST Commissionerate had imposed a fine of Rs 377 crore for failure to file returns, which was not communicated to him, GV Reddy stated and added that the organisation saved Rs 9 crore when he ensured the filing of IT returns before the stipulated time frame. He also highlighted that under the current administration, no new connections were given, and no additional revenue was generated, accusing Dinesh Kumar of colluding with the previous YSRCP government to harm the organisation. Furthermore, GV Reddy mentioned that he would consult with the Chief Secretary and Advocate General to ensure MD K Dinesh Kumar takes responsibility for his negligence and pay the losses incurred by the organisation.

Need 4k crore to complete Veligonda project: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu

VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu criticised the previous YSRCP government for dedicating the Veligonda project to the nation without completing critical work. He stated that an additional Rs 4,000 crore is needed to finish the project within two years. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Thursday, Rama Naidu explained that the Veligonda project, intended to provide irrigation water to 4,50,000 acres and drinking water to 25 lakh people, was inaugurated by the previous YSRCP government despite unfinished tasks such as the head regulator at Srisailam, retaining walls, tunnel construction, the feeder canal, and housing for displaced families. The minister noted that it would take nine months to complete work on the first and second tunnels, with drilling and blasting on tunnel two still unfinished. Additionally, the 21.8 km feeder canal remains incomplete. Rama Naidu pointed out that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu initiated the Veligonda project in 1996 and allocated Rs 1,373 crore in 2014. Between 2014 and 2019, Rs 1,319 crore (96%) was spent, completing 30% of the work. In contrast, the previous YSRCP government allocated Rs 3,518 crore but only spent Rs 647 crore (18%), he added.

Group-2 Mains exam will proceed as planned: Andhra Pradesh High Court

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday ruled that the Group-2 Mains examination, scheduled for February 23, will proceed as planned. Justice Satti Subba Reddy, hearing a petition from two aspirants seeking to halt the exam, made it clear that stopping the examination would adversely impact the 92,250 candidates who have already cleared the preliminary exams. The petitioners sought the courts intervention to implement horizontal reservation in the recruitment process. However, Justice Reddy pointed out that only two of the 92,250 candidates had approached the court. He explained that if the petitioners prevail in their case, the entire recruitment process may need to be restarted. The judge emphasised that halting the main examination at this stage would cause irreparable harm to many candidates. The court stated that all subsequent actions related to the recruitment notification will be subject to its final judgment in the case. The State government was directed to file a counter affidavit within 10 days, providing complete details on the matter. The court has posted the next hearing for March 11. In a related case, a petition had been filed by Kanuparthi Penhalaya of YSR Kadapa and three other aspirants, requesting special reservation points for disabled persons, women, ex-servicemen, and sportsmen in the Group-2 notification. Additionally, Malla Parthasarathy of Visakhapatnam has filed a petition urging the finalisation of the reservation roster for Group-2 posts in line with the Supreme Courts judgment in the RK Sabharwal case.

CM Chandrababu Naidu schools Jagan on aid to chilli farmers, MCC

VIJAYAWADA: Amid concerns raised by YSRCP leaders regarding the security of their president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu lambasted the opposition for political opportunism. Naidu pointed out, Those who did nothing for farmers in the past are now speaking up. Before 2019, we released Rs 138 crore to support chili farmers, and now the NDA government will provide further assistance. Some are entering the chili yards for political gain. Naidu also addressed the violation of the election code, stating, The election code applies to all parties, yet they claim it does not apply to them simply because they arent contesting. They ignored the Election Commissions directive and engaged in illegal activities. Should the police protect criminal actions? TDP leaders Gottipati Ravi Kumar (Energy) and Anagani Satya Prasad questioned Jagans awareness of the Model Code of Conduct. They criticised the YSRCPs theatrics over security and said the party would not win more than 11 seats if Jagan does not change his approach.

Centre to hold meet with Andhra government on MIP, chilli exports on Friday

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the issue of slump in the prices of chillies was taken to the notice of the Centre, and urged to extend the necessary aid to farmers of the State. Chilli prices slumped like never before. Farmers got good price in the past because of the demand in the international market. However, due to the reduction in demand in the international market, there is a slump in the chilli prices now, Naidu said. Speaking to media persons in New Delhi, Naidu said he had taken the matter to the notice of the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan through a video conference as he was on a tour. Chouhan will look into the matter on Friday. We have requested the Centre to intervene in the matter and support farmers. Under the Market Intervention Scheme, only 25% is provided. However, the price determination should consider the cost of cultivation. We have urged the Union Minister to look into these issues, Naidu said. The Chief Minister met Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, at Krishi Bhavan on Thursday evening, and discussed the problems of chilli farmers. Binod Giri, Deputy Commissioner (MPS), has issued a meeting notice to discuss the AP governments plea for market intervention to protect chilli farmers interests. A meeting has been convened under the chairmanship of the Union Agriculture Minister at 11 am in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the fixation of Market Intervention Price (MIP) for red chillies, and steps to be taken to promote chilli exports from AP. Naidu seeks Central aid to complete Polavaram-Banakacherla link project Our primary objective is to support farmers in every possible manner. On Saturday, we will meet traders and market committee representatives to understand the reasons behind the price slump. We have already written three letters to the Centre. Additionally, AP officials have been in discussions with Central authorities. We have come to Delhi with the sole intention of protecting the interests of chilli farmers, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure that farmers do not suffer losses, he asserted. Naidu, who went to the national capital, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, had a busy day. Prior to the swearing-in ceremony, Naidu along, with Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, met Union Minister for Jal Shakti CR Patil, and requested him to reimburse the expenditure incurred on constructing Polavaram Left and Right canals, besides extending all support to complete the project on a war footing. He also sought the Central support for the Polavaram-Banakacherla link project, which aims to transfer 200 TMC of floodwater from Godavari river at Polavaram to Banakacherla through a link canal. The Polavaram project works are progressing smoothly, and our target is to complete the project by 2027. We also discussed river interlinking. If we utilise the water that is currently going waste into the sea, Andhra Pradesh can become drought-free. We have sought Central assistance to divert Polavaram water to Banakacherla. A Central team will visit the State soon to study the feasibility of the project, Naidu said. Regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission, Naidu said, The aim is to provide tap water to every household. However, the previous YSRCP regime failed to utilise even 1% of the scheme. The Centre allocated Rs 27,000 crore to AP, yet instead of laying water pipelines, they proposed borewells. States like Uttar Pradesh have effectively utilised Rs 50,000 crore under the scheme, and Gujarat has ensured continuous water supply to every house. The Centre has extended the project deadline to 2028. However, based on past allocation, AP will only receive Rs 27,000 crore. To supply tap water across all regions, an additional Rs 54,000 crore will be required. We will continue discussions regarding the matter. A Detailed Project Report for Rs 27,000 crore is being prepared, and we will seek Central funding for it.

One more GBS death reported at Andhra's Guntur GGH

GUNTUR: A patient undergoing treatment for Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS) at Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) reportedly passed away on Wednesday. Sources identified the deceased as Sheikh Gauhar Jaan, admitted on February 2 with GBS symptoms. Despite repeated attempts, GGH Superintendent Dr SSV Ramana and District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr Vijaya Lakshmi did not confirm the death. This marks the second recent GBS fatality, following Kamalammas death from Prakasam district. The rising number of cases across the State has raised alarm, with several patients receiving treatment at major government hospitals. Health officials are monitoring the situation as GBS-related admissions continue to climb. In a fresh case, Nagarapati Umadevi from Chebrolu, Eluru district, was admitted to Vijayawada GGH on Wednesday with GBS symptoms, further adding to the growing concern. Health Minister ensures availability of medicines Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav conducted a surprise inspection at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Vijayawada on Wednesday, focusing on medicine availability and hospital efficiency. At the pharmacy, he reviewed stock levels and directed officials to add two more counters to speed up distribution, ensuring patients receive timely treatment. The Minister spent three-and-a-half hours inspecting various departments, including General Surgery, Medicine, Pulmonology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, ENT, and Cardiology. He verified doctor attendance, addressing concerns about senior doctors neglecting outpatient (OP) duties. Patients reported quick registration and consultations, with positive feedback on the staffs conduct. With over 2,500 daily visitors, Minister Yadav engaged with patients, checked waiting times, and tasted inpatient meals, confirming that the diet provided 2,417 kilocalories per day. However, he identified a shortage of Medical Nursing Orderlies (MNOs) and Ward Nursing Orderlies (WNOs), noting that patient assistants were handling transport duties. He directed officials to resolve the staffing gap and improve hygiene, ordering immediate repairs to broken bathroom doors. Later, Yadav reviewed hospital operations with senior officials and instructed engineers to address drainage and parking issues in the super-specialty block. Speaking to the media, he acknowledged that hospital conditions were better than reported but stressed the need for continuous improvement.

Major NDPL network busted in Andhra Pradesh

VIJAYAWADA: A major Non-Duty Paid Liquor (NDPL) supply chain was busted across multiple districts in Andhra Pradesh, leading to several arrests and the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit liquor. The State Task Force (STF), which led the investigation, uncovered that the network operated through private transport services and digital transactions. Authorities identified Chennai-based supplier S Prabhu as the key figure behind the operation, linking him to multiple illegal liquor distributions throughout the State. The probe began with a breakthrough on December 27, 2024, in East Godavari district, when Rajamahendravaram (North) police seized 112 bottles of various premium brands and arrested Burla Balakrishna and Muppana Ravikumar. Discrepancies in bottle quality and cap types raised suspicions of counterfeit liquor, later confirmed to have been sourced from Prabhu in Chennai. On January 8, 2025, the STF uncovered another NDPL case in West Godavari district, with Bhimavaram police seizing a car containing 25 bottles of premium liquor. Kommisetty Venkateswarlu, a key dealer, and four others were arrested. The liquor supply was traced back to Prabhus organised network. The investigation extended to NTR district (Vijayawada) on January 12, 2025, where police seized 12 bottles of NDPL liquor and arrested two transport drivers linked to Venkataramana Transport. It was revealed that liquor shipments were smuggled from Chennai using private transport networks. Former and current managers of the transport remain at large, suggesting a well-coordinated operation. In Nellore district, a major breakthrough came on January 13, 2025, when authorities seized 25 liquor bottles and arrested Muniswamy Nagaraju, a repeat offender who had previously been acquitted in a similar case in 2017. The liquor was confirmed to have been sourced from Chennai through private transport services. Authorities identified S Prabhu from Chennai and Manikyam from Vyasarpadi as the two primary suppliers in the NDPL network. Their modus operandi involved taking orders via phone calls or voice messages, packaging liquor stock, and dispatching it through private transport services like Venkataramana Transport and SRKALT Transport. Payments were processed digitally via platforms such as PhonePe and Google Pay, with meticulous transaction records maintained. To avoid detection, they stocked liquor based on demand rather than maintaining large inventories. A major turning point occurred on January 28, 2025, when Chennai police arrested the accused while he was attempting to supply NDPL liquor in Chennai. He was booked by Madhavaram police station and remanded to Puzhal Central Prison, Chennai. Andhra Pradesh authorities obtained a PT warrant from the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Nellore, and dispatched a team to Chennai for further investigation. Excise Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena praised the STF and excise officials for their relentless efforts in exposing the NDPL supply chain. He lauded Excise Commissioner Nishant Kumar and Director of Enforcement and Prohibition Rahul Dev Sharma for their guidance.

We act on our own on HC Bench: Andhra Pradesh High Court

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday made it clear that there was no necessity to abide by the request of the State government pertaining to setting up of the HC Bench in Kurnool. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Cheemalapati Ravi, asserted that the judiciary acts on its own. It made critical remarks against the State government, while hearing the PIL filed by advocates Tandava Yogesh and Turaga Sai Surya challenging the State governments decision to establish the HC Bench in Kurnool. The Chief Justice said a committee was formed to examine the possibility for setting up the Bench in Kurnool, and told the petitioners to wait until it submitted its report. A decision on setting up the Bench in Kurnool will be taken with due consideration of all the judges in full court meeting, and objections on the committee report can be challenged further, it said. Further, the court posted the matter to May. It may be recalled that the Chief Secretary, and the Principal Secretary (Law) wrote letters to the High Court in last November on setting up of the Bench, and Law Minister NMD Farooq too announced that the HC committee would be visiting Kurnool to find a suitable place for it. The court found fault with the petitioners for filing a PIL when the committee is yet to submit its report on the issue.

Come to rescue of Andhra chilli farmers, CM Chandrababu Naidu writes to Centre

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who went to the national capital on Wednesday evening to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Delhi Chief Minister on Thursday, is likely to meet Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and urge him to come to the rescue of chilli farmers in Andhra Pradesh. In fact, prior to leaving for Delhi, he wrote a letter to Chouhan, urging the Centre to take immediate measures to implement the Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for red chillies. Naidu appealed to the Centre to implement the PDP for red chillies by fixing the Market Intervention Price (MIP) under the MIS, based on the cost of cultivation as per the recommendations of Swaminathan Committee, and constitute a committee under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary (Agriculture/Horticulture/ Co-operation ) to finalise PDP. Decline in exports hit demand for chilli: CM He requested the Centre to bear 100% loss instead of 50:50 ratio besides enhancing the coverage from 25% to 75% of production of red chillies for implementing the PDP under the MIS, taking Andhra Pradesh as a special case due to its precarious financial condition. Mentioning that a meeting was already held by the MIS Committee in New Delhi on February 14 in this regard, he said proposals were submitted to the Committee of Ministers for taking necessary action. Explaining that the peak arrivals of red chillies have already started, and the present price of red chilli at the Market Yard in Guntur for special variety is Rs 13,600 per quintal and common variety Rs 11,500, Naidu informed that red chilli prices are declining gradually, compared to previous years prices of Rs 20,000. Mentioning that the expected production of red chillies will be 11,67,110 metric tonnes, he said the main reason for the price decline is due to decrease of exports to other countries like China, Colombo, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand. There is every need to support the red chilli farmers to avoid distress sale with the market intervention at this juncture, Naidu said. Naidu likely to meet Amit Shah, CR Patil According to sources, Naidu is expected to call on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the projects related to Andhra Pradesh and other issues. He is also likely to meet Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil regarding the release of funds for Polavaram project, and the Central assistance for constructing the left and right main canals to supply water with a capacity of 17,500 cusecs.

The rise in seafood demand has led to an estimated 10% increase in fish production. However, there are concerns regarding the use of chicken waste as fish feed, which authorities are monitoring closely.

Andhra to expand aquaculture to 1 million acres by 2030, says CM Naidu

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu emphasised that the effective use of technology can yield remarkable results in the aqua sector. Speaking at the three-day Aqua Tech 2.0 Conclave organised by the Global Forum for Sustainable Transformation in Vijayawada on Tuesday, he stated that this industry should act as a growth engine for the States economic prosperity. By leveraging technology and adopting innovative methods, achieving a steady 30 per cent growth rate is possible. Currently, aquaculture is practised on 4,00,000 acres, and the State government aims to expand it to 1 million acres by 2029-30, Naidu said. He also highlighted that natural farming practices in aquaculture would enhance global demand for Andhra Pradeshs aqua products. The Chief Minister underscored the success of natural farming in agriculture and advocated its implementation in aquaculture as well. He stressed the need for improvements in aqua feed and urged producers to focus on value addition to maximize farmers income. However, Naidu insisted that this growth must be achieved in an environmentally sustainable manner and urged farmers and aqua businesses to adopt pollution-free practices, as solutions exist to mitigate pollution-related issues in the sector. Furthermore, the Chief Minister directed that all aqua farming activities must be registered, warning that unregulated practices would be subject to strict enforcement. He reiterated the governments commitment to promoting the aqua industry while ensuring adherence to regulations, particularly regarding pollution control. I have a special focus on the aqua sector. Our state is highly conducive to aquaculture. Between 2014 and 2019, this industry was a major revenue generator for the State, contributing 8.8% to the Gross Value Added (GVA). While countries like Vietnam have lower production levels than us, they lead in valuation. To achieve similar success, we must focus on value addition through processing, he asserted. Political slugfest over zero debt sustainability between Minister Lokesh, YSRCP in Andhra

VIJAYAWADA: A blame game between HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh and the YSRCP over the zero debt sustainability of Andhra Pradesh unfolded on the social media platform X on Monday. In his post, Lokesh, citing the statement of expenditures for FY 2020-21 and FY 2023-24, asserted that the economic devastation caused by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy during the five years of YSRCP rule in the State was substantial. All systems were weakened. Debts were incurred. While interest on the debt incurred by all governments combined over 58 years was Rs 14,155 crore by 2019, by 2024, the interest to be paid on the debt has reached Rs 24,944 crore, he said. Lokesh added that the interest paid on the debt incurred during Jagan Reddys five years in power is approximately Rs 11,000 crore more than the interest paid on the debt accumulated by all previous governments. Rebutting his claims, the YSRCP posted on its official X handle, challenging Lokesh to comment on the performance during the period 2014-19, when the TDP-led NDA was in power. Andhra Pradeshs share of the interest burden from the combined State of AP in 2013-14 was only Rs 7,488 crore. This means that the interest burden from liabilities incurred by all governments from the time of state formation in 1956 to 2014 was only Rs 7,488 crore, and this increased to Rs 15,342 crore by 2018-19, the YSRCP claimed. The party questioned, What does this mean? The interest burden due to liabilities contracted by the State government over 58 years doubled during the 5 years of the TDP government. This was although your government, during 2014-19, did not face any significant distress such as the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, you were also part of the NDA government during 2014-18. Despite all this, your government performed miserably and pushed the State into zero debt sustainability. Do you deny this? it asked.

Andhras economy derailed in last decade, says former special chief secretary PV Ramesh

VIJAYAWADA: Economics expert and former Special Chief Secretary PV Ramesh expressed concern over the deteriorating state of Andhra Pradeshs economy, pointing out that capital expenditure had fallen to less than 4 per cent over the past decade. Speaking at a discussion organised by Jana Chaitanya Vedika in Guntur district on Sunday, PV Ramesh highlighted that Andhra Pradesh ranked 17th among 18 States in the latest fiscal health index by Niti Aayog, while topping the list in borrowings. From 2014 to 2023, the State had to borrow 20 per cent more each year, while its revenue decreased by 6 per cent annually, he noted. He criticised how the Comprehensive Financial Management System (CFMS) lost its original purpose and instead became a tool to serve political parties, which, he said, had turned into monopolies. The former special chief secretary also slammed political parties for fostering divisions based on caste, creed, religion, and region, and lamented the lack of message-oriented Telugu films. Former Minister Dokka Manikya Vara Prasad, speaking at the event, said the freebie culture had become a political norm, but insisted that people want jobs and employment, not handouts. The former special chief secretary also accused the BJP of adopting a double standard on freebies during the recent Delhi elections. Jana Chaitanya Vedika president V Lakshman Reddy and others also spoke at the discussion.

Government initiates steps to stabilise vegetable prices in Andhra

VIJAYAWADA: The State government is taking steps to stabilise the prices of green chillies, red chillies, brinjal, tomato and other vegetables, while ensuring farmers receive a minimum support price, Chief Secretary K Vijayanand said on Saturday. He reviewed the price situation with officials from the agriculture, marketing and civil supplies departments, and Markfed, directing them to monitor fluctuations and intervene as needed to benefit both farmers and consumers. Vijayanand emphasised that farmers should get fair prices for their produce while vegetables remain affordable to consumers. He assured that the government will take all necessary steps to support farmers under any circumstances. Stressing better coordination among agriculture, horticulture, and related departments, he instructed officials to track real-time price variations and act swiftly to prevent market disruptions. He pointed out that price instability often arises due to regional production disparities, with prices dropping in high-yield areas and soaring in regions with lower supply. To address this, he directed officials to ensure surplus produce is efficiently distributed, especially to farmers markets, to balance supply and stabilise prices. Officials were also tasked with monitoring vegetable prices through real-time governance systems linked with Agriwatch. In cases where the minimum support price is not met, Vijayanand stressed the need for market intervention to stabilise rates while keeping consumer prices reasonable. Additionally, he instructed Industries Secretary Yuvraj to collaborate with ITC and other companies to secure better prices for eucalyptus and subabul farmers. As these crops are primarily used in paper production, he urged negotiations with ITC Bhadrachalam and other paper mills to ensure fair price. Currently, subabul is priced at Rs 5,400 per tonne and eucalyptus at Rs 4,400 per tonne. To reduce post-harvest losses, the government will install Sabji Coolers in all Rythu Bazaars across the State. These modern, water-based coolers function even without electricity. Already tested in select markets, they help keep vegetables fresh, allowing unsold produce to be carried over to the next day instead of being wasted. He instructed officials to install at least one cooler in each Rythu Bazaar, with additional units in larger markets. Special Chief Secretary (Agriculture) B Rajasekhar said the marketing department has placed orders for 59 Sabji Coolers, with plans to install them in 112 Rythu Bazaars. More orders will follow to expand the initiative statewide, he added.

Andhra: CBI expresses inability to probe Sugali Preethi case

VIJAYAWADA: In a twist in the mystery death case of Dalit girl Sugali Preethi, the CBI said it cannot investigate the case any further citing lack of resources. It requested the Andhra Pradesh High Court to dismiss the petition filed by the parents of Preethi to direct the CBI for taking up investigation as per the State governments orders. To unravel the facts, the previous government headed by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy handed over the case to the CBI. In a submission to the High Court in writing, CBI SP A Raghuram Rajan said the agency at present is dealing with several important cases, hence the petition filed by Preethis parents should be dismissed. Preethi was found dead under suspicious circumstances on August 19, 2017 in her school. While the school management claimed that she committed suicide, the girls parents alleged rape and murder by the sons of the school head. A case was registered, the accused were arrested, and let out on bail. Later, her parents approached Jagan during his visit to Kurnool. Orders for probe were issued in February 2020. However, the CBI failed to take up the case and Preethis parents approached the High Court on September 11, 2020. The court directed the CBI to file a counter and it was submitted.

CM Chandrababu Naidu calls for public participation in Swachh Andhra

VIJAYAWADA: Making it clear that the Swachh Andhra programme does not belong to any individual or organisation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu wanted the active participation of all people in it. Setting goals alone will not help, but plans should be implemented effectively to realise them, the Chief Minister said at a review meeting held at the State Secretariat on Friday. He stressed on the implementation of an action plan for promoting sanitation, besides setting the highest standards. The State government has been organising special Swachh Andhra and Swarna Andhra programme every third Saturday of the month. Taking a separate theme for every month, the Swachh Andhra - Swarna Andhra programme is being implemented to create awareness among people about cleanliness, the Chief Minister said. While New Year Clean Start was the theme of January, this month it is Source-Resource, the Chief Minister said, and made it clear that focus should be on how to achieve development by utilising the resources in the State to get to our roots and strengths. Naidu is very particular that a goal has to be set for increasing the living standards, encouraging tourism, attracting investments and taking the climate of the State to Net Zero, besides achieving sustainable development goals. He also directed the officials to move towards total cleanliness, prioritise sanitation, public health, solid waste management and also work towards achieving the targets set by the Centre. Everyone should realise that Swachh Andhra means clean people with an ethical mindset, neat environment, clean houses, neat colonies and villages. Along with residences, open areas, schools, colleges and government offices, the places of worship and industries too should be kept clean, Naidu said. To achieve this every individual, every employee, all organisations and all systems should work and this should not be viewed as an issue confined only to one particular department or officer, Naidu opined. The Chief Minister underlined the need for bringing radical changes in government offices and for which all employees in various offices should join hands for maintaining cleanliness and a friendly atmosphere. Simply giving slogans that greenery should be maintained, while throwing waste on roads and cutting trees, will no longer be allowed, he said. The Chief Minister said if all the citizens take the responsibility, the Swachh Andhra dream can easily be realised. The officials of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board should focus on such matters, he stressed. The officials explained to the Chief Minister the progress of the programmes taken up by the Urban Development Department and the Panchayat Raj wing as part of Swachh Andhra - Swarna Andhra, particularly the targets set in 14 indicators. They highlighted the construction of individual toilets, public toilets, door-to-door collection of waste, solid waste segregation, clean village concept and other initiatives. Ranks have been awarded to the districts based on the progress achieved in all these 14 indicators. NTR district stood first by earning 129 points out of 200, while Visakhapatnam got second place with 127 points. TIRUPATI: In the ongoing Tirumala Laddu ghee adulteration case, II Additional District Magistrate Court in Tirupati on Thursday granted five days of joint SIT custody to four accused, from February 14 to 18. The CBI Joint SIT had previously filed a petition in the court three days ago, seeking seven days of custody for the accused. However, after hearing arguments regarding the custody petition, the court allowed only five days of custody. On behalf of the SIT, Public Prosecutor CN Gopinathan (Vijayawada CBI Court) and APP P Jayashekar argued for seven days of custody, stating that the accused had not cooperated with the investigation and had refused to provide key information. In response, the defence counsel, Supreme Court Advocate Hashana Sukhdev and Tirupati Senior Advocate Vani contested the prosecutions request. They argued that the reasons cited by the CBI for further custody were baseless, as their clients had already provided the necessary information to the SIT. The SIT is expected to take the accused into custody from the Tirupati Sub Jail for further investigation on Friday morning during office hours.

AP CM Naidu betrayed public trust, alleges YSRCP chief Jagan

VIJAYAWADA: Highlighting his governments direct benefit transfer of Rs 2.71 lakh crore to beneficiaries under various welfare schemes, and fulfilment of all poll promises despite the Covid-19 pandemic, former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy slammed the TDP-led NDA government for neglecting key sectors, and failing to fulfil its election promises. During a meeting with peoples representatives of Guntur district on Wednesday, Jagan accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of betraying the public trust by discarding the manifesto, and neglecting education, healthcare, agriculture and industrial sectors. The YSRCP chief attributed the party debacle in the elections despite getting 40% vote share to his reluctance to make false poll promises like Naidu. However, Jagan assured the YSRCP rank and file that he will remain deeply connected to the people, and continue in politics for another 25-30 years. He questioned the future of the NDA government when people realise Naidus deception. He pointed out that TDP leaders are now afraid to enter villages because they have failed to keep their poll promises. Mocking Naidus slogan, Jagan said the Chief Minister had become a guarantee for fraud instead of a guarantee for the future. He alleged that corruption was now rampant, bribes had become a must to get any work done, gambling clubs were openly operating, and those who question the government were being arrested. He warned that such injustice will not last and the people will teach a fitting lesson to Naidu.

All AP districts put on high alert to curb spread of Avian Influenza

VIJAYAWADA: The bird flu outbreak has killed more than 11,000 chickens at Anumollanka village in NTR district, prompting the State authorities to issue a high alert across all districts. The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has already led to the death of thousands of chickens, with neighbouring Telangana banning poultry imports from Andhra Pradesh. Officials are enforcing strict containment measures, including culling infected birds, inspecting vehicles at checkpoints, and urging poultry farmers to report unusual chicken deaths. Animal Husbandry officials have set up monitoring teams at border check posts, such as Garikapadu, to prevent the transportation of potentially infected chickens and eggs. Special teams comprising police and veterinary officials are conducting inspections to curb the spread of virus. Authorities have also mandated the immediate disposal of infected poultry birds and eggs in affected areas. According to Animal Husbandry Director Dr Damodar Naidu, approximately 15,000 chicks have been culled so far. We have formed special teams to identify and contain the virus. Strict biosecurity measures are being enforced to protect the poultry population, he said. Poultry farm owners have been directed to follow sanitisation protocols using potassium permanganate, potassium hypochlorite, and sodium hydroxide to prevent further spread. Officials have issued a high alert in villages classified as red zones. A total of 721 rapid response teams have been deployed to monitor and prevent the virus spread. Special attention is being given to Krishna and Godavari districts, which house a high number of poultry farms and aqua ponds. A similar situation has emerged in Srikakulam district, where Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu instructed officials to raise public awareness and take urgent preventive measures. The outbreak of bird flu was confirmed in poultry farms at Velpur in West Godavari, and at Kanuru in East Godavari, after samples tested at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal detected virus. Containment measures include establishing red zones within 1 km radius of affected farms, where all poultry birds, eggs, and feed are being destroyed as per guidelines. The government has set up 40 check posts along the borders of Telangana and Tamil Nadu to prevent the spread of bird flu. The outbreak has had a significant economic impact, particularly on hoteliers and meat vendors, as fear of infection has drastically reduced chicken sales. Consequently, mutton prices have surged, reaching Rs 950 to Rs 1,000 per kg. Demand for mutton has increased over the last two days as people avoid chicken due to the virus scare, said Karimullah, a meat shop owner in Rajahmundry. Authorities continue to urge poultry farmers and public to remain vigilant and report any unusual poultry deaths to veterinary hospitals immediately.

AP CM Naidu reviews Budget preparation with focus on welfare, development

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held an extensive discussion with Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav and senior department officials regarding the preparation of the Budget for the financial year 2025-26. The meeting, held at his residence in Undavalli on Wednesday, saw the Chief Minister emphasise that the Budget should strike a balance between welfare schemes and the development of the State. It may be pointed out that the TDP-led NDA government had presented an interim Budget in November 2024, with an outlay of Rs 2.94 lakh crore for a five-month period. The Assembly session is scheduled to commence on February 24, with the Budget expected to be tabled on February 28. The State government has challenges galore in formulating the Budget, despite the Centre providing funds for key projects such as the Amaravati capital city and the Polavaram Irrigation Project. Officials explained that the preparation of the Budget has been difficult, with Naidu issuing directives to outline plans for implementation of other poll promises. YSRCP policies adversely hit States future income These include Thalliki Vandanam (Rs 15,000 aid for mothers of school-going children), Annadata Sukhibhava (Rs 20,000 financial assistance per year for farmers from both State and Centre), and free bus travel for women from the coming financial year. Furthermore, sources held the previous YSRCP government responsible for the State ranking 17th out of 18 States in the fiscal health index. They added that the YSRCPs policies have adversely affected the States future income as well. Since assuming office in June 2024, the State government has increased social security pensions, adding a burden of Rs 2,720 crore. It has also implemented the free sand policy. Additionally, Deepam 2.0 (three free gas cylinders per year for eligible beneficiaries) has been launched, and Anna Canteens have been established.

Andhra Pradesh on high alert after first GBS death

VIJAYAWADA: The AP government has been placed on high alert following the death of a 10-year-old boy from Guillain-Barr syndrome (GBS) in Srikakulam district. The deceased, Vatada Yuvatha from Kapu Godayavalasa village in Santhabommali mandal, on Monday declared brain dead. Yuvatha initially suffered throat pain and fever, prompting his parents, Chiranjeevi and Roja, to seek treatment at private hospitals in Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. Despite medical intervention, his condition worsened. A private hospital in Visakhapatnam diagnosed him with GBS, and he was later shifted to James Hospital in Ragolu, where he passed away. Following the incident, district authorities intensified health surveillance in Kapu Godayavalasa, launching a door-to-door survey. GBS, a rare immune-mediated disorder affecting the nervous system, is typically seen in individuals aged 20 to 40. The boys death has raised concerns among health officials due to the rarity of such cases in children. Doctors have emphasised that early detection remains a challenge, as the disease progresses rapidly and can cause severe complications. The State administration has directed district health officials to stay vigilant and raise public awareness. Srikakulam District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar assured that while a case has been reported, GBS is neither an epidemic nor contagious. He noted that one or two cases appear monthly in the district but are usually treated and discharged. Authorities are investigating the root cause of Yuvathas condition. Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav has instructed officials across districts to implement preventive measures and educate the public on GBS symptoms. With the first reported case in the State, vigilance is crucial, he said. In a humanitarian gesture, Yuvathas parents donated his organs after he was declared brain dead. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed condolences on social media, calling the boys death tragic and commending his parents strength. He assured them of the governments full support.
