TDP MP Lavu behind false cases against me, alleges Vidadala Rajini
VIJAYAWADA: Former Minister and YSRCP leader Vidadala Rajini has denounced what she calls fabricated ACB cases filed against her, labelling them as the height of Redbook governance in the State. Speaking to mediapersons in Chilakaluripet on Sunday, Rajini accused TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu of masterminding these charges out of personal vendetta, alleging that the current SP, son of a TDP MLC, is conducting a biased probe as per the whims of Devarayalu. Rajini claimed the coalition government which has been in power for ten months, has fueled a smear campaign against her, culminating in this baseless ACB case. She denied any contact or transactions with the complainant, asserting that the case stems from Devarayalus influence and his support for the complainants illegal ventures. The former MLA recalled an incident when Sri Krishna Devarayalu, who was an MP in the YSRCP, illegally accessed her call data via police officials during a party event in 2020. When she complained to then Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the involved officers were suspended, sparking Devarayalus ongoing grudge, Rajini claimed.

Focus on value education, gender equality in Andhra Pradesh schools
VIJAYAWADA: The coalition government led by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is set to introduce value education, gender equality and constitutional values in school curriculum as part of a major educational reform. The initiative follows recommendations from government advisor Chaganti Koteswara Rao and aims to shape responsible, ethical and socially aware citizens. Following the instructions of HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, value education will be introduced at two levels, covering both primary and secondary schools. This curriculum will focus on character development, social harmony, decision-making skills, emotional well-being, and civic sense. By instilling strong moral values, the government seeks to create a generation of students who are honest, responsible, and compassionate. Promoting gender equality in schools will ensure that every student receives equal opportunities and respect. Schools will encourage students to break stereotypes and pursue careers and interests without gender-based limitations. The initiative also aims to create a safe and inclusive school environment, empower girls with leadership skills, and reduce gender-based violence by fostering mutual respect and understanding. Constitutional values will play a crucial role in shaping students into responsible citizens who respect democracy, equality, and justice. The new curriculum is expected to foster a democratic mindset, promote social justice, fundamental rights, the unity in diversity and reinforce secularism and national integrity. These reforms mark a significant step toward holistic education in the State. By integrating value education, gender equality, and constitutional values into the curriculum, we aim to nurture responsible and socially conscious citizens, Director of School Education Vijay Rama Raju V told TNIE . As part of these reforms, the government is also regrouping schools into 2,809 School Cluster Complexes using GIS mapping to ensure demographic balance and vertical integration. Each cluster complex will act as an academic hub, providing teacher training, resource sharing, effective infrastructure utilisation, and academic monitoring. The initiative will also enhance community engagement, ensuring better policy implementation. As part of this initiative, school cluster meetings will be conducted every third Saturday from 1 pm to 5 pm, during which all government, aided, residential, and KGBV school teachers will participate, Director of AP State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) MV Krishna Reddy told TNIE. Schools will close early on these days after serving mid-day meals. Training sessions will be conducted in a blended mode, utilising digital infrastructure, and will include subject-specific videos developed by SCERT. Centres push for energy-efficient ACs in Andhra Pradesh to meet power demand
VIJAYAWADA: As Andhra Pradesh braces for record-breaking power demand this summer, the Union government has intensified efforts to promote energy-efficient air conditioners (ACs), focusing on the States commercial hub, Visakhapatnam. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, has urged AC manufacturers to prioritise BEE 5-star-rated models to curb electricity consumption, ease grid strain, and support sustainability. With Indias demand for cooling rising, studies indicate that nearly 30% of installed ACs nationwide are over eight years old, consuming 40-50% more power than modern, energy-efficient units. In Andhra Pradesh, replacing these outdated ACs with 5-star-rated models could yield up to 60% energy savings, reduce peak-hour grid pressure, and significantly cut CO2 emissions - key to Visakhapatnams goal of becoming a net-zero emissions city. BEE Secretary Milind Deore, in a letter to AC manufacturers, emphasised the need for an industry-driven push to popularise energy-efficient models, particularly in high-consumption cities such as Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati. Other southern urban centres, including Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, are also targeted for increased 5-star AC adoption. Visakhapatnam, a major industrial and commercial hub, is witnessing rapid growth in energy consumption, making it a prime candidate for a large-scale transition to efficient cooling solutions. Simple behavioral changes, such as setting thermostats to 24C, could save Andhra Pradesh and India up to 10 billion kWh annually, cutting energy costs by thousands of crores. To accelerate this shift, BEE has proposed a nationwide awareness campaign, urging manufacturers to collaborate on initiatives such as digital marketing, influencer-driven promotions, and in-store offers. With consumer interest in Air Conditioner purchases peaking between February and May, this initiative could drive significant savings and contribute to a sustainable energy future.

MRPS chief lauds Andhra Pradesh CMs role in SC categorisation
VIJAYAWADA: Describing the passage of a resolution on the sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) by the AP Legislative Assembly as a historic milestone, Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) founder Manda Krishna Madiga credited Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu for his pivotal contributions in the achievement. Highlighting that Naidu had first introduced the resolution on SC categorisation in 1997-98, Manda Krishna dedicated this success to those who lost their lives during the three-decade-long struggle. He asserted that the unanimous passage of resolutions on SC categorisation validated the justice of their cause. Speaking to the media at the residence of TDP general secretary Varla Ramaiah in Vijayawada on Friday, Manda Krishna Madiga hailed the Chief Minister for standing by justice despite facing immense pressure. He recalled Naidus assurance in favour of SC categorisation during an MRPS meeting in 1996 and commended his sincere efforts to fulfil that promise. He also recounted launching his padayatra (Madiga Dandora) in 1997 after receiving blessings from Naidus mother. He acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Kishan Reddy, and former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu for the cause. Deputy Chief Minister and Janasena president Pawan Kalyan also extended his backing to the Madiga agitation. Criticising YSRCP president and former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Manda Krishna claimed that SC categorisation would not have been possible under his leadership, as Jagan did not even grant an appointment to submit a memorandum. Andhra Pradesh government to set up 125 Autism Support Centres under Bhavitha initiative
VIJAYAWADA: The State government will set up 125 Autism Support Centres in urban local body government schools across 26 districts under the Bhavitha initiative of Samagra Shiksha Andhra Pradesh. Approved as a pilot project by the Central government, the initiative aims to provide specialised support for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). If successful, the model could be implemented nationwide. The centres will offer therapies such as applied behaviour analysis (ABA), speech therapy, occupational therapy, articulation and language testing, and life skill training. Each facility will be equipped with modern amenities and staffed by trained professionals to help children overcome developmental challenges. Kona Shashidhar, Principal Secretary of State Education, emphasised that these centres mark a significant milestone as the first of their kind within a government education setup in India. He credited Samagra Shiksha and the Department of School Education for their support in approving the proposal and allocating funds. Shashidhar had advocated for the initiative during the PAB Budget meetings in Delhi. Samagra Shiksha AP has been recognised nationally for its inclusive education efforts. Earlier this year, it received the Indian President Award for its Digitally Accessible Pedagogy, which aids children with special needs. Samagra Shiksha AP State Project Director B Srinivasa Rao stated that the initiative aims to integrate children with special needs (CwSN) into mainstream education. He noted that Rs 27.75 lakh has been approved for constructing an autism centre at the municipal level. The centres will also work to sensitise families and communities about ASD. Currently, 679 Bhavitha Centres operate within government schools, helping students transition into mainstream education. AP has the highest prevalence of autism in India, with over 10,000 students diagnosed under the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE). With autism cases rising, the demand for specialised intervention is increasing. Presently, only a few NGOs and private clinics provide aid, which is insufficient. Government Senior Advisor for Inclusive Education, Ram Kamal, told TNIE that the Andhra Pradesh model of inclusive education uses digital tools to help children overcome learning barriers and ensure equal opportunities. The Centre has shown interest in adopting this, as evidenced by its funding approval for the 125 Autism Support Centres.

ECI objects to Andhra Pradesh govt forming SIT to probe irregularities in voter list
VIJAYAWADA: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly objected to the Andhra Pradesh governments formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe voter list irregularities in the Parchur constituency during the 2024 general elections. In a submission to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday, senior advocate Avinash Desai, representing the ECI, accused the State government of overstepping its authority. He argued that the SITs creation bypassed the ECIs jurisdiction, calling it an attempt to interfere with electoral processes. Desai highlighted that the Chief Secretary had issued a Government Order (GO) to form the SIT. When the ECI demanded an explanation, the government withdrew the GO but imposed conditions instead of offering an unconditional withdrawal. The High Court acknowledged the arguments but declined to pass orders since the GO had been withdrawn, closing the case.
Land conversion data collection from March 25
VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu on Thursday revealed that no programme to collect land conversion details was taken up in the past three decades. Replying to a query from Kavali MLA Dagumati Venkata Krishna Reddy in the Assembly, he announced that a land conversion data collection initiative will be launched at the Collectors Conference on March 25, and completed within two months. Explaining the impact of urbanisation, SEZs, and industrialisation, Ramanaidu mentioned that vast tracts of agricultural land has been repurposed over the years. The Irrigation Minister informed that of the States 40 million acres, only 20 million are cultivable, with 10.6 million currently being irrigated. After the NDA government came to power, efforts to optimise water resources have paved the way to irrigate an additional 4.3598 million acres, with proposals to supply water to 4.8612 million acres in the future. Ramanaidu assured Chilakaluripet MLA Prathipati Pulla Rao that suggestions for the Polavaram - Banakacherla DPR will be reviewed. He also promised to desilt Nagarjuna Sagar Ayacut canals as part of Operation and Maintenance works, blaming the previous YSRCP government for neglecting the irrigation sector.
Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu criticises YSRCP MLAs for signing in register
VIJAYAWADA: Legislative Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu criticised several YSRCP legislators for signing the attendance register without participating in Assembly sessions, calling their conduct inappropriate for elected representatives. During the Question Hour on Thursday, the final day of the budget session, the Speaker addressed the issue after a scheduled question from YSRCP MLAs was left unanswered due to their absence. He revealed that YSRCP members had submitted 25 questions throughout the budget session, yet none were discussed as the members failed to attend. This has denied other members a chance to participate, which is unacceptable in a democracy, Ayyanna remarked. He stressed that MLAs, entrusted by the public to represent them, must fulfil their responsibilities. The Speaker named the absent YSRCP MLAs Y Balanagir Reddy, T Chandrasekhar, R Matsyalinga, Verupaksha, Visweswara Raju, A Amarnath Reddy, and Dasari Sudha who had submitted questions but were missing when they were addressed. I leave it to their conscience to reflect on how their constituents will view their actions, he added. Later, while the Speaker was preparing to adjourn the session sine die, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu pointed out discrepancies in the attendance register. He noted that while eleven YSRCP MLAs were marked present on February 24, five on February 25, one on March 18, and four on March 19, none of them were seen in the House after the first day. We assumed you may have asked them not to come, Naidu joked. The Speaker denied giving any such instructions. Ayyanna emphasised that MLAs, like government employees, are accountable for fulfilling their duties. Public representatives are paid salaries from taxpayers money. If a government employee skips work, disciplinary action follows. These MLAs are drawing salaries without performing their duties. This issue must be addressed as per legislative rules and expert advice, he stated.
Panel moots to categorise SCs into three groups
VIJAYAWADA: The AP Legislative Assembly discussed the sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) at length on Thursday, going by the report of the One Man Commission headed by retired IAS officer Rajeev Ranjan Mishra. It decided to implement the SC sub-categorisation by taking the State as a unit at present based on the 2011 Census, and district as a unit after the 2026 Census. Later, the Assembly passed a resolution to include the Budaga Jangam caste in the SC list. On November 15, 2024, the government constituted the One Man Commission headed by Mishra to study SC sub-categorisation. After touring the 13 erstwhile combined districts, and gathering public feedback, the commission submitted a comprehensive report on March 10, 2025, proposing division of 59 SC sub-groups into three categories. They include Group 1 - Most Backward (Relli sub-group) with 1.0% reservation, Group 2 - Backward (Madiga sub-groups) with 6.5% reservation, and Group 3 - Relatively Less Backward (Mala sub-groups) with 7.5% reservation within 15%. The proposed system ensures justice for all SC sub-groups. For example, if 100 jobs are available, 8 will go to the Mala community, 6 to Madigas, and 1 to Rellis as per the system. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said he is committed to SC categorisation, ensuring justice to all sub-groups. Assembly resolution will be sent to Centre for approval, says Naidu He expressed satisfaction that the long-pending issue, which had been debated since he first assumed office in 1995, was finally addressed under his leadership. He reiterated the NDA governments commitment to uplifting marginalised communities socially, economically and politically. He announced that the Assembly resolution to include the Budaga Jangam caste in the SC list will be sent to the Centre for approval. He explained in detail the developments for sub-categorisation, including Manda Krishna Madiga launching a major movement under the banner Madiga Dandora, appointment of the Justice Ramachandra Rao Commission on September 10, 1996, and the government issuing an order on June 6, 1997, sub-categorising SCs into A, B, C and D groups. The SC sub-categorisation got the assent of the then President KR Narayanan on November 30, 1999, which led to over 22,000 job opportunities for Madigas and other SC sub-groups. However, in November 2004, the Supreme Court ruled that only Parliament got the authority to decide on SC sub-categorisation. The Usha Mehra Commission, set up by the Centre, later confirmed that the categorisation implemented between 2000 and 2004 yielded positive results. In August 2023, the SC ruled in favour of SC sub-categorisation, he elaborated. Naidu said he considers it a rare opportunity, and a result of past good deeds to have been part of this 30-year journey. The Supreme Courts verdict validated his vision for social justice, he said. Citing the appointment of GMC Balayogi as the Lok Sabha Speaker, and Prathibha Bharathi as the Assembly Speaker, Naidu said the TDP has consistently championed social justice by laying emphasis on political empowerment of Dalits.

Andhra's Machilipatnam way behind tax target
VIJAYAWADA: Machilipatnam Municipal Corporation is facing difficulties in collecting property tax and water charges, with only 34% of the total demand met ahead of the March 31 deadline. Officials have collected Rs 11.91 crore out of the Rs 34.93 crore target for 2024-25, including Rs 18.60 crore in arrears. The corporation has 52,566 assessments, including 48,968 private properties, 271 State government buildings, 85 Central government buildings, and 3,242 vacant land tax assessments. Water charge collections remain low, with only Rs 3.85 crore collected from a Rs 14 crore demand, leaving Rs 10.16 crore outstanding. Property tax and water charges are crucial revenue sources for urban local bodies, funding infrastructure and public services. Delayed payments are hampering development activities. The decline in tax recovery is attributed to ward secretaries, who took over collection duties after ward secretariats were established, replacing bill collectors. Officials claim arrears have been accumulating since this transition. Municipal Corporation Revenue Officer Venkateswara Rao said 270 ward secretariat and revenue staff are involved in collection efforts, expressing confidence that over 70% of dues will be recovered.

Private universities amendment bill passed in Andhra Pradesh Assembly
VIJAYAWADA: Minister for HRD and IT Nara Lokesh introduced the Andhra Pradesh Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Amendment Bill 2025 in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. After discussion, the bill was passed. The Cabinet recently approved allotment of 70 acres of land for BITS in Amaravati. Were also collaborating with Tata Group, L&T, IIT Madras, and University of Tokyo for a Deep Tech University, he said. The 2016 law, amended five times by the previous government, clashed with UGC norms, including a mandate for greenfield universities to partner with top 100 global institutions a rule UGC does not enforce. The State is engaging with private universities through the Economic Development Board. University of Tokyo and AME University, Philippines have evinced interest, with more institutions in talks. We aim to attract top Indian and foreign universities across Andhra Pradesh, not just Amaravati and Visakhapatnam, but also Rayalaseema, with significant incentives, Lokesh said. Revealing that a proposal for IIIT in Kanigiri is under consideration, he said Andhra Kesari University was set up in Prakasam district in 2022 without any sanctioned posts or staff. The university will be developed. Donors are coming forward to strengthen government universities, and a special mechanism needs to be established for this, he said. Lokesh highlighted the NDA governments focus on higher education, citing the 2016 law under the TDP rule that brought Centurion University in Visakhapatnam. Spanning 75 acres with a builtup area of 4.75 lakh square feet, it trains 2,550 students across 23 programmes with 133 faculty members, boasting eight Centres of Excellence and three incubation hubs. VIJAYAWADA: Minister for HRD and IT Nara Lokesh has announced that 500 citizen services will be made available to people under Mana Mitra (WhatsApp Governance) by June 30. During a short discussion on WhatsApp Governance in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, he said Artificial Intelligence-enabled services, and QR code will be introduced. With the introduction of QR code, there will be no scope to tamper with any documents or certificates, he explained. Underlining the need to provide quality services to all like education, Lokesh said he conducted a deep study on good governance. My wish is that administration should be in the hands of the people through Visible Governance - Invisible Government mode. Also, my opinion is that there should be no need for officers and politicians in their daily life, he asserted. Now, 200 services are being provided to the people under WhatApp Governance. The State government strongly believes that WhatApp Governance will certainly play a crucial role in the implementation of revolutionary reforms, the IT Minister said. He informed the Assembly that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has indicated that TTD services too should be brought under the purview of Mana Mitra. Govt means not office, it is service, says IT Minister Lokesh said a decision will be taken in this regard after holding discussions with Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials. Government means not office, but one should always remember service. The CMs objective is to make Andhra Pradesh number one in the country in all sectors. WhatsApp Governance is going to be a key reform in politics in the coming days, he asserted. I learnt technology through my MBA from Stanford University. I came to know public issues directly with my Yuva Galam Padayatra. When I met the people, they complained that they had to queue up before the government offices for days together to get the services. In fact, they asked me as to why the government services were not available like cinema tickets, Swiggy food, essentials and cabs which are simply available by switching a button. The people also complained that they had to pay money if they go to government offices. This is the reason as to why they do not want to approach the government offices, Lokesh explained. The TDP-Jana Sena combine has won a majority of MPTC seats in Duggirala of Mangalagiri Assembly. When an MPP seat was reserved for a BC woman, the then MLA from Mangalagiri came in the way of issuing the caste certificate. That day itself I had decided to bring transformation in public administration, and WhatsApp Governance stuck in my mind at that time, Lokesh stated.

It is learnt that the Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat on Monday, approved the GoMs recommendations to implement the SC sub-classification by taking State as a unit. Though there was a proposal from the public representatives that it would be better to take the district as a unit for the purpose, the Cabinet had decided to consider the State as a unit for implementation of the SC categorisation, based on the 2011 census, and district as a unit after the completion of the 2026 census. Politics on Hindi unnecessary: Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu
VIJAYAWADA: Telugu is our mother tongue, Hindi is the national language, and English is an international language, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu said, emphasising that learning multiple languages is always beneficial. There should not be unnecessary politics on the language issue, he added. Addressing the Legislative Assembly on Monday, the Chief Minister defended the three-language formula, emphasising that language is a tool for communication, not a barrier. People who studied in their mother tongue have succeeded globally, Naidu said, adding that learning multiple languages enhances job opportunities in international markets. Language is meant for communication; one does not gain knowledge solely through language. True knowledge comes when education is imparted in ones mother tongue. Those who studied in their mother tongue have excelled because learning in ones native language enhances understanding, the Chief Minister explained. Reiterating his governments stance, Naidu said language should not be used to spread hatred. He noted that many Indians are working in countries such as Japan and Germany, where learning the local language has contributed to their success. For livelihood, one can learn multiple languages, but we must never forget Telugu, our mother tongue, Naidu said. Citing an example, he added, Learning Hindi enables smooth communication when we visit Delhi. Instead of indulging in unnecessary politics, we must recognise that language is merely a tool for communication the more languages one learns, the better.

Rs 250 crore corruption in NREGS during YSRCP regime, says Andhra Dy CM Pawan
VIJAYAWADA: Expressing concern over irregularities in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan revealed that corruption amounting to Rs 250 crore occurred during the previous YSRCP government. During the Question Hour, Pawan stated that a Social Audit conducted across 546 mandals brought the irregularities to light. He assured that the audit would be concluded by March 31. The Project Director has ordered recovery of Rs 71 crore out of the Rs 250 crore. However, the remaining amount lacks sufficient evidence for recovery, he explained. Highlighting specific instances, he said that wrong entries in muster rolls and the use of machinery in NREGS projects were widespread. The Panchayat Raj departments social audit team in Kurnool alone identified irregularities in 16 out of 25 mandals, involving 520 individuals. The misappropriation of funds amounted to Rs 74,57,280, of which Rs 13,35,416 have been recovered so far. To curb corruption in NREGS, the government has introduced measures such as surprise inspections by vigilance, social and quality control wings, and stringent checks for online-assigned work. A state-level flying squad has been established to conduct field inspections, review muster rolls, and ensure compliance with norms, alongside taking prompt disciplinary action against offenders. Clarifying wage-related concerns, Pawan noted that wage enhancements fall under the Centres jurisdiction. For the 2024-25 fiscal year, the daily wage rate has been fixed at Rs 300 by the Union government.
Andhra Pradesh opposition leader Botcha slams government for bias in debate on scams
VIJAYAWADA: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Botcha Satyanarayana strongly criticised the coalition government for attempting to defame the previous YSRCP administration. Speaking to the media outside the Assembly alongside party MLCs, Botcha claimed that a conspiracy lies behind the ruling partys insistence on discussing alleged scams that occurred during the YSRCPs tenure. He accused the government of portraying unverified allegations as scams without proper investigation, aiming to tarnish the YSRCPs image. Botcha condemned what he described as a deliberate attempt to spread falsehoods about the YSRCPs time in power. He further alleged that the ruling coalition is manipulating the narrative by selectively focusing on the 2019-24 period YSRCPs term while refusing to discuss alleged scams from the broader 2014-24 timeline, which includes the TDPs tenure from 2014-19. Botcha noted that the YSRCP had urged the government to debate all alleged scams since the States bifurcation in 2014. However, he claimed the coalition government rejected this proposal, limiting the discussion to YSRCPs five-year rule. He also pointed out that, over the past 10 months, the current government has made several allegations against YSRCPs governance but has yet to complete investigations or substantiate any charges. In contrast, Botcha claimed that several scandals from the TDPs 2014-19 rule were documented, investigated, and had cases registered yet the government refuses to address them. Emphasising that the YSRCP is prepared to discuss all alleged scams to reveal the truth, Botcha condemned the governments decision to confine the debate to the YSRCPs tenure. In protest, the YSRCP staged a walkout from the Council.

He said the Council Chairman had approved the discussion, but YSRCP members instead raised counter-allegations about TDPs 2014-19 governance before staging a walkout. Furthermore, the minister urged the Chairman to deploy marshals to bring back the YSRCP members who walked out, noting that YSRCP had previously relied on marshals to manage proceedings in the House. Lokesh claimed the government is prepared for an open discussion, accusing YSRCP of repeatedly making baseless allegations while evading accountability. He cited instances where TDP leaders, including N Chandrababu Naidu, were jailed on fabricated charges. Chandrababu Naidu spent 53 days in prison over an alleged scam, with figures fluctuating from Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 27 crore, Lokesh said. He added that other TDP leaders such as Atchannaidu, Dhulipalla Narendra, Kollu Ravindra, and Narayana also faced harassment through false cases. He highlighted his own ordeal, claiming to have faced 23 cases, including SC/ST atrocity and attempted murder charges, which he described as baseless. Lokesh questioned whether YSRCP feared exposure of their misdeeds, emphasising that TDP is prepared to discuss all cases and irregularities. He condemned YSRCPs tactics as irresponsible, asserting that truth would prevail.
Andhra Pradesh government focuses on R&R, Polavaram project works
VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu affirmed that the government is prioritising both the Polavaram Projects construction and the rehabilitation of displaced families. Addressing the Legislative Council on Monday, Ramanaidu criticised the previous YSRCP government for neglecting displaced families, claiming no compensation or rehabilitation work was undertaken during its tenure. He accused former CM Jagan Mohan Reddy of failing to deliver on pre-2019 election promises, leaving affected families without colonies, compensation, or even drinking water during the Godavari floods. He said 96,660 families across 373 hamlets in Alluri Sitarama Raju and Eluru districts are impacted. At the 41.15-metre contour, 38,060 families are displaced. 58-ft Potti Sriramulu statue to come up in Amaravati
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced that a 58-foot tall statue of Potti Sriramulu will be installed in Capital Amaravati in honour of Amarajeevis 58-day-long hunger strike for the creation of Andhra State. The statue installation will be completed before the next birth anniversary of Sriramulu, along with a memorial in Amaravati. Sriramulus native house in Padamatipalli will be converted into a museum. A modern health centre and a high school building will also be constructed in the village, he said. Participating in Sriramulus birth anniversary celebrations at Undavalli on Sunday, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to the statue of Amarajeevi. On the occasion, he said Sriramulu lived for the people, and the Telugu community. Among several people, only a few leave an indelible mark on history. As long as Telugu history exists, Sriramulu will be remembered, the Chief Minister said. Elaborating further, he said the sacrifice of Sriramulu paved the way for the formation of linguistic States in India. During the British rule, governance was structured through Presidencies, prioritising administrative convenience over linguistic or regional identities. However, after Independence, the peoples self-identity, and cultural pride strengthened, he said. Born on March 16, 1901 in Madras, Sriramulus family originally hailed from Nellore. He strongly believed that people should have the right to be governed in their language. His struggle for a separate Telugu-speaking State led to his ultimate sacrifice. CM proposes setting up of a trust to preserve legacy of Amarajeevi Despite initial indifference from both the people and the Centre, Sriramulu undertook a 58-day-long hunger strike, and passed away on December 15, 1952. His death sparked a massive public outrage, forcing the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to announce a separate Andhra State on December 19, 1952. On March 25, 1953, Nehru officially declared that Andhra State would be formed on October 1, 1953. Andhra Pradesh later merged with Hyderabad (Telangana) but was bifurcated again in 2014 into two separate States. We have honoured Sriramulus sacrifice by grandly commemorating December 15 as his martyrdom day, the Chief Minister said. He emphasised that Andhra Pradesh, formed due to Sriramulus supreme sacrifice, will be transformed into the number one State in the country by 2047. He urged the establishment of a memorial trust in Sriramulus name, encouraging his followers and the public to come forward to preserve Amarajeevi legacy. Remembering sacrifices for just a day or two is not enough. Future generations must be inspired by them for years to come. We must educate those unfamiliar with history about how Sriramulu gave his life for the cause of Telugu people. It was under our leadership that Nellore district was named after Sriramulu, Naidu said. The 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Sriramulu have begun on Sunday. Over the next 12 months, one significant programme will be conducted every month, culminating in grand celebrations on March 16, 2026. Starting this Ugadi, the government will implement the P4 initiative, which aims to ensure social stability, and improve the living standards of people. Naidu stressed the need to bridge economic disparities, ensuring that everyone should have access to opportunities and resources. In the coming five years, the government will work towards poverty eradication, and uplifting the underprivileged. Even in wealthy communities like Vysyas, there are economically weaker sections who need support. We must all work for societal progress, Naidu said. MAUD Minister P Narayana, Arya Vysya Corporation Chairman Doondi Rakesh, and representatives from various communities attended the event.

Andhras natural farming pilot project gains traction in Zambia
VIJAYAWADA: Zambian farmers are embracing the benefits of chemical-free, climate-resilient farming, thanks to a pilot programme spearheaded by Andhra Pradeshs Rythu Sadhikara Samstha (RySS). Launched in September 2024, the initiative aims to introduce sustainable farming practices at Valponasca Learning Farm (Luwingu) and Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre (Lusaka). The programme, led by T Vijay Kumar and Lakshma Naik, has garnered attention for its success in improving soil health and crop productivity without chemical fertilisers. Crops grown in natural farming plots have shown 100% germination, minimal pest damage, and high resilience without irrigation, while control plots struggled with poor germination and pest issues. The use of bio-stimulants like Beejamrutham and Jeevamrutham has enhanced soil microbial activity. It has gained praise from local leaders, with Modester, Director at Valponasca. Fr Claus from Kasisi emphasised the initiatives role in regenerating soil and enhancing biodiversity, which could have far-reaching effects on food security in Zambia. The programme is involving students from agricultural colleges and PhD scholars from institutions like the University of Zambia and Wageningen University. On March 12, 2025, farmers from Congo and Northern Zambia visited the fields and were impressed by the quality of the produce.

AP govt expresses readiness to set up small nuclear power plants
VIJAYAWADA/SRIKAKULAM: The Andhra Pradesh government has expressed its readiness to establish small nuclear power plants in the State, citing their cost-effectiveness. During a brief discussion on the Energy Sector in the State Assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the States willingness to exploring future technologies like small nuclear power plants. Mentioning the Kovvada nuclear power plant, Naidu felt that opting for one or two small units would be more practical than big ones. He revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently discussed this matter with him. The State government is also contemplating a joint venture with NTPC in this regard. Recently, NTPC, which identified several potential locations across India for small nuclear power plants, including one near Anakapalle in Andhra Pradesh, submitted a proposal to the State government. The nuclear power plant at Kovvada was envisaged to generate 6,600 megawatt of power through six reactors, which would be constructed and commissioned in a phased manner. The project was first conceptualised in 1990 at the coastal village of Kovvada in Srikakulam district, but remained dormant until 2009. Between 2009 and 2012, the government revived its interest, conducting detailed surveys and feasibility studies to assess the project viability. In November 2012, the State issued GO No. 42, authorising the acquisition of 1,916 acres of land for the nuclear power plant. Of the total, 1,300 acres are classified as government-owned land, while the remaining 616 acres fall under Zeroyati land. Compensation was paid under the R&R package to 1,863 affected families, except for two. The payment of compensation for land is pending to 21 people as they only have occupational rights on the land, Ranastalam Tahasildar Nandigam Prasada Rao told TNIE.
Branded liquor sales drop 99 per cent in five years
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradeshs liquor revenue gap with Telangana surged from Rs 4,186.70 crore to Rs 42,762.15 crore over five years due to the previous YSRCP regimes policy failure, the State government claimed on Saturday. According to a note tabled in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council on Scams during 2019-24, reduced legal liquor availability reportedly increased the prevalence of illicit liquor, resulting in significant losses to the State Exchequer. The report stated that the previous government made misleading promises about liquor prohibition but failed to implement effective measures. After promising to phase out liquor outlets and restrict sales to five-star hotels, the government reduced the number of liquor shops from 4,380 to 2,934 in 2020. However, the count later increased to 3,392 with the addition of 459 Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) shops. Regarding bars, the report noted that all 840 bars operating in 2019 remained functional. The previous governments prohibition pledge allegedly resulted in personal profiteering, increased crime, black market activities, and public health concerns due to inadequate liquor regulation. The report highlighted that maximum retail price (MRP) hikes of up to 75%, intended to reduce alcohol consumption, had backfired. The policy missteps reportedly led to a 66% increase in non-duty paid liquor, a 64% rise in crime, a 161% surge in arrests, and worsening public health conditions. New players seised production through intimidation, while multinational corporations (MNCs) faced delayed payments and order cancellations. Transparent procurement (2014-19) was replaced by discretionary methods that benefited select players. Supply chains were monopolized to favour certain brands, excluding MNCs, the report stated. The report further revealed that affordable liquor options had dwindled from 31 brands before 2019 to just two, resulting in a 99.97% drop in legal sales and an increase in illicit consumption. Between 2019 and 2024, 60% of the States 20 IMFL (Indian-Made Foreign Liquor) distilleries reportedly shifted to subleases. New entrants including Adan, Graysons, Leela, JR Associates, and PV Spirits operated at 2,000 lakh proof litres, generating Rs 20,356 crore in sales. Automated procurement systems were abandoned in favour of manual selection, benefiting 38 new brands from seven firms, which reportedly earned Rs 15,843 crore. The report also claimed that liquor and beer supply orders were linked to extortion, with an estimated Rs 3,113 crore collected illicitly over five years. Additionally, 99.38% of the Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Limiteds (APSBCL) Rs 99,413.5 crore liquor sales were conducted in cash, leaving no digital trail of transactions. The report highlighted that Rs 13,148.82 crore was raised through high-interest non-convertible debentures.
I never opposed Hindi as a language, says Dy CM Pawan Kalyan
VIJAYAWADA: Jana Sena Party chief and Deputy Chief Minister Konidela Pawan Kalyan asserted that both imposing a language forcibly and opposing a language blindly do not contribute to achieving national and cultural integration. His remarks followed criticism from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leaders over his statements on the National Education Policy (NEP) and the alleged imposition of Hindi. Clarifying his stance, Pawan Kalyan asserted that while he never opposed Hindi as a language, he firmly opposed making it compulsory. When the NEP 2020 itself does not enforce Hindi, spreading false narratives about its imposition is nothing but an attempt to mislead the public, he said. Taking to social media platform X on Saturday, Pawan Kalyan wrote, As per NEP 2020, students have the flexibility to learn any two Indian languages (including their mother tongue) along with a foreign language. If they do not wish to study Hindi, they can opt for Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Assamese, Kashmiri, Odia, Bengali, Punjabi, Sindhi, Bodo, Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Meitei, Nepali, Santali, Urdu, or any other Indian language. He further emphasised that the multi-language policy is designed to empower students with choice, promote national unity, and preserve Indias rich linguistic diversity. Misinterpreting this policy for political agendas and claiming that Pawan Kalyan changed his stance only reflects a lack of understanding. Jana Sena Party firmly stands by the principle of linguistic freedom and educational choice for every Indian, he said.
I-T officials estimate over Rs 230 crore tax evasion by Sri Chaitanya group of colleges
HYDERABAD: Income Tax officials on Saturday concluded their five-day search of Sri Chaitanya group of educational institutions in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai. The searches, which ended on Saturday, were conducted on suspicion of tax evasion and diversion of funds into other business activities. I-T officials, off the record, said that they suspect tax evasion amounting to over Rs 230 crore. However, this has not been officially confirmed. Investigators also uncovered digital evidence, account books, data from both software systems and records of cash fee collections, sources said. Searches were conducted on the groups corporate office in Madhapur and branches in other states. Officials reportedly discovered that cash collected from students was diverted into other business ventures, including realty. According to agency sources, the groups management used separate software systemsone for fee collection and another for tax filings indicating significant tax evasion. It was revealed that the majority of the tuition and admission fees were collected in cash, while only a small portion was recorded through online payments or cheques for income tax purposes. During the operation, IT teams searched the residences of the institutions directors and key employees, seizing Rs 5 crore in cash. Officials also accessed several bank lockers linked to the directors and their family members. Following the latest operation, the tax department has summoned the institutions management and directors to appear before the investigation officer next week with all relevant documents related to the tax evasion case and other financial irregularities. Sources revealed that in 2020, IT officials had previously conducted raids on Sri Chaitanya for similar violations, seizing Rs 11 crore at the time.

Will groom 100 young changemakers to lead India: Pawan Kalyans Vision 2047
VIJAYAWADA/ KAKINADA: Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modis slogan Viksit Bharat by 2047, and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidus vision of Swarna Andhra by 2047, Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief Pawan Kalyan set his own goal. I aim to nurture 100 youths from each village in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, ensuring that at least 100 capable leaders guide the country in the right direction by 2047, said Pawan Kalyan during his powerful speech at the 12th JSP Foundation Day celebrations at Chitrada in Pithapuram Assembly constituency on Friday. Addressing the huge gathering of the grand event Jaya Ketanam, he asserted that the party had taken crucial steps toward success after electoral losses in the past. The meeting drew over five lakh Janasainiks and JSP supporters from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. We stood firm. We stood by the party. We stood by the TDP. When we lost in 2019, they grew arrogant. The previous rulers insulted our women, harassed the people, and sentenced those who questioned them. Brave women who demanded justice were jailed. Even a leader with four decades of experience was imprisoned. Many conspiracies were hatched to suppress me. They tried to keep me away, even from the Assembly gates. But we did not back down. Today, we have entered the Assembly with 21 MLAs, and Parliament with 2 MPs, achieving a 100% strike rate because we are fearless, he declared. My political ideology is clear, not confused Reflecting on his journey, Pawan Kalyan credited his political entry to cinema, but stressed that films are only a tool for a larger mission. He revealed that revolutionary singer Gaddar encouraged him after watching his movie Khushi, while Central University Professor Sripati Ramulu influenced his ideology. My aspiration is always to live like an average middle-class man. I was raised like Meena in Chanti film. No one expected my transition to politics from films. My father wanted me to complete my degree, and become an SI. Our family was always cautious about stepping outside, fearing the unknown, he said. Pawan Kalyan attributed the JSPs political success to its seven guiding principles, which he formulated after deep contemplation. Running the party for a decade is a sacrifice. But this victory is fulfilling. I entered politics not for votes, but for a societal change. My ideology is about unity among diverse people, he asserted. Mentioning misconceptions about his political ideology, Pawan Kalyan said, Some say I am confused regarding my ideology. I was inspired by Che Guevara for his humanitarian values, but I have followed Sanatana Dharma since childhood. My home used to echoe with the chant of Lord Sri Ram. The JSP chief explained that his partys ideology was shaped by the speeches of seven influential leaders from around the world. Urging young leaders to rise, Pawan Kalyan warned against the corrupt political practices of using power for personal gain. We cannot ignore history, where 450 people sacrificed their lives for their beliefs, power should be used to uplift people, not for violence and looting. We will not divide castes or exploit communities for personal gain. We have struggled hard to reach this stage, and that should be understood. If we want a strong nation, we need strong individuals. The country will only change when young leaders stand for its future. This is the time to lead. Sanatana Dharma is in my blood, I dont need to prove it, he averred. On Tamil Nadu leaders stiff opposition to the three-language formula of the National Education Policy, Pawan Kalyan asked them not to dub Tamil films into Hindi merely to earn revenue from Hindi-speaking States like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, when they are raising a hue and cry over imposition of Hindi. You need money and workforce from Hindi-speaking States, but oppose Hindi itself. That is not acceptable. All languages are essential for communication and fostering brotherhood, he observed. Not just for Tamil Nadu but for the entire country, we need multiple languages. Not just for the integrity of the country, but also to understand one another and share love, multiple languages are good for India, he said. Pawan Kalyan reaffirmed his deep connection to both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, calling Telangana the birthplace of JSP, and Andhra Pradesh his Karmabhoomi, and stressed the power of linguistic and cultural unity. He questioned pseudo secularism and asked the people to follow true secularism. True secularism should be applied with the true spirit, not for dam convenient vote bank politics. Jana Sena is not for that, he asserted. He thanked the TDP and BJP leaders, including Chandrababu Naidu and Lokesh for their greetings on the occasion of the 12th Formation Day of the JSP. All eligible for welfare schemes will get welfare benefits without any bias: CM Chandrababu Naidu
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister and TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu has made it clear that the NDA government will implement the welfare schemes without any discrimination, and all the eligible people will get the benefits irrespective of their political affiliations. Holding a teleconference with TDP Ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs on Friday, Naidu said TDP activists should not develop any rapport with YSRCP leaders. My intention is that all the eligible people should get the welfare schemes. But TDP activists should not develop any rapport with YSRCP leaders. I am clear on it. But YSRCP leaders have twisted the fact, and resorted to a false propaganda that I stated that not to extend welfare schemes to those who voted to the YSRCP, the TDP supremo explained. Mentioning that the exercise to fill nominated posts is going on, Naidu said some TDP leaders are delaying the process without submitting their recommendations. Only the names of committed and loyal TDP activists should be recommended for the nominated posts at the earliest, he said. Informing that chairpersons of 21 temple trusts across the State will be appointed, he said right persons will be given right posts. About 60,000 applications have been received for the nominated posts, and they are being scrutinised. Those who failed to get the nominated posts now, will be given opportunities after the completion of two year tenure of those appointed. The performance of all those who got nominated posts, is being closely monitored, he said. Suggesting that TDP activists maintain dignity, and should be cautious like when in opposition, Naidu is of the firm opinion that the governance should be acceptable to all the people. Mingle with NDA leaders, says CM We have rolled out several welfare schemes and development programmes in the last nine months. Clear changes are visible in the administration now, Naidu said. Instructing the In-charge Ministers to visit their respective districts, and review the implementation of the development programmes and welfare schemes, the Chief Minister urged them to give prior intimation to the district coordinators, MLAs and MPs about their visits. The Ministers should also visit the district TDP offices. Group politics in the party should not be tolerated, he asserted. Promoting solar energy is our policy. TDP MLAs should take the initiative to ensure effective implement of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana in every constituency. They should realise the target of installing 10,000 rooftop solar panels under the scheme in each Assembly segment. BCs will get a total subsidy of Rs 80,000 for installing 2 kilowatt rooftop solar panel. SCs and STs will get rooftop solar panels free of cost, explained. Suggesting the MLAs and MPs to raise the issues related to their constituencies in the Assembly and Parliament, the TDP supremo urged them mingle with the rank and file of TDP allies.

VIJAYAWADA/KAKINADA: Jana Sena MLC Nagababu stressed the importance of responsible leadership, urging politicians to be mindful of their words. Speaking at the Jaya Ketanam, marking Jana Senas 12th Formation Day, he took a veiled dig at opposition leaders. Leaders must be cautious when they speak. Weve seen the consequences of reckless remarks a leader with a foul mouth couldnt even secure opposition status, Nagababu said. Pawan Kalyan always advises that words should be chosen wisely in politics. Some leaders, like comedians, dream of regaining power in five years. My advice to them keep dreaming for 20 years or more. Praising the JSP chiefs dedication to public welfare, Nagababu lauded his forward-thinking leadership. One must either be as great as Pawan or follow him. If anyone believes they are solely responsible for Pawans victory in Pithapuram, they are mistaken. His success belongs to him and the people, he added. PAC Chairman and Minister Nadendla Manohar reiterated the partys unwavering dedication to public service despite facing challenges and insults. In 2019, we stood by construction workers and faced many difficulties. Even those struggling financially stood with us. Pawan Kalyan respects everyone and has always encouraged youth leadership, Manohar said. Former minister and party leader Balineni Srinivas Reddy alleged that the previous government targeted him. Jagan harassed my family, seized my properties, and made life difficult for us. He must remember no one escapes the consequences of their actions, he warned.
Why are doctors in Andhra refusing promotions? Heres why
VIJAYAWADA: A rising number of government doctors are refusing promotions, a trend that has drawn serious concern from Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav. The issue became evident during the recent promotion process for District Coordinators of Health Services (DCHS), where 50 out of 85 eligible doctors (59%) declined the promotion, despite six existing vacancies and two more expected soon. This pattern is consistent with the recent promotion exercise for professor positions, where 33% of eligible doctors refused the role. Key role of DCHSs DCHSs are responsible for overseeing 224 healthcare facilities across the State, including Community Health Centres, District, and Area Hospitals. Doctors are eligible for DCHS promotions if they have at least three years of service as Civil Surgeon Specialists (CSS) and at least two years remaining before retirement. Vacancies for DCHS currently exist in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, and Prakasam districts, with additional openings expected in Nellore and Chittoor soon. Reasons and reluctance Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav has ordered a detailed inquiry to understand why doctors are increasingly rejecting promotions in both secondary and tertiary healthcare. Senior health officials believe that many doctors are unwilling to relocate from their preferred locations. They are reportedly taking advantage of the current system, which allows them to decline promotions without limits, holding out for postings in desired areas. Promotions and challenges Despite the reluctance, nine doctors have been promoted as DCHSs against the existing six vacancies, with two more expected soon. The health minister approved these promotions on Friday. Shedding light on the issue, Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors Association President Dr D Jayadheer Babu attributed the resistance to the current administrative system, particularly issues within the directorate. He told TNIE that higher officials pressure doctors with patient targets and treat them disrespectfully. A patient seeks treatment when they are unwell, but setting targets is unethical. Doctors are obligated to treat those who visit hospitals, but penalising them for not meeting quotas is unfair, he lamented. Dr Jayadheer also claimed that higher officials bypass DCHSs by directly contacting frontline doctors via video conferences, diminishing the DCHS roles authority. He added that despite being a district-level post, DCHSs lack key official powers, a designated office, and adequate manpower, further discouraging doctors from accepting the role. Regarding the refusal of professor posts, Dr Jayadheer stressed that while doctors have the right to decline promotions, the absence of a structured calendar for promotions and transfers is a major deterrent. If promotions and transfers followed a fixed schedule, more doctors would be willing to accept them, he explained. He also noted that while teacher associations are frequently invited for discussions on transfers, no such dialogue has been initiated with healthcare professionals. We are ready to present our concerns if the government opens discussions on these issues, and promotions, he said.
Andhra HC denies bail to accused in Maoist recruitment case
VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday rejected the bail plea of Dongari Devendra and Chukka Shilpa, accused of influencing young women and recruiting them into the banned Maoist party. The High Court Bench, comprising Justice Kanchireddy Suresh Reddy and Justice Thuta Chandra Dhanasekar, denied bail after considering the primary evidence against the accused and the severity of the charges. According to investigations, the accused, along with others, established the Chaitanya Mahila Sangham (CMS), an organisation that allegedly misled women under the guise of social service and influenced them to join the Maoist party. One such victim, Radha from Pedabayalu, Visakhapatnam, was reportedly recruited into the Maoist party in 2017. Following her disappearance, Radhas mother lodged a police complaint, claiming her daughter was forcefully inducted. Given the seriousness of the case, the investigation was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which later filed a chargesheet. The accused first sought bail from the NIA Special Court in Visakhapatnam, which was rejected on May 29, 2024. Later, they moved the High Court, challenging the decision. After reviewing the evidence, statements from Radhas family, and the NIA investigation findings, the High Court upheld the lower courts verdict, concluding the accused played a role in Radhas forced recruitment into the banned political outfit, dismissing their petitions.
