The sudden downpour, which lasted for at least three hours, inundated several low-lying areas in Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Guntur, and Eluru. Agriculture department officials are currently assessing crop losses across the three districts. Other districts such as West Godavari, Prakasam, and Tirupati also faced similar disruptions. VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, IT, and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, declared that even a hundred Pakistans could not harm India, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the nations ultimate weapon against aggression. Speaking at an event marking the resumption of Amaravatis construction, Lokesh condemned Pakistans recent actions, particularly the Pahalgam terror attack, accusing it of making a grave mistake by targeting innocent lives. Pakistan cannot uproot even a blade of grass on Indian soil, he asserted, warning that Modis decisive leadership could erase Pakistan from the world map. Lokesh claimed Pakistans military was in chaos, with personnel resigning or fleeing, calling it a testament to Modis formidable influence. He also criticised the previous Andhra Pradesh governments ruinous 20192024 tenure, alleging it had deliberately stalled Amaravatis development due to personal animosity towards Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He accused the former regime of wasting five years on a three-capital proposal without laying a single brick, thus hampering the states progress. Highlighting the Amaravati movements resilience, Lokesh noted its 1,631-day struggle, with participation from children to the elderly under the Jai Amaravati banner. He detailed the sacrifices made, including 270 farmer deaths, arrests, police brutality against women farmers, and 3,000 illegal cases filed against protesters. Saluting the farmers unwavering spirit, Lokesh called Amaravati a peoples capital that no conspiracy could suppress, crediting Modi for its foundation and asserting that no force could halt its development. On domestic policy, Lokesh hailed the central governments caste census decision as a bold, historic step by Modi to empower marginalised communities, addressing decades-long struggles for social justice among backward classes. Lokesh announced that Amaravatis construction, relaunched under Modis guidance, marked unstoppable progress for Andhra Pradesh. He outlined decentralised development plans, including the Polavaram project, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Bhogapuram Airport, and CNG plants in Prakasam. Reflecting on the post-bifurcation challenges of 2014, he praised Naidu for balancing welfare and development, with Amaravati chosen as the capital through consensus and built on farmers sacrifices. He said regions like Rayalaseema had become electronics and automobile hubs, Godavari districts aqua hubs, and North Andhra pharma and IT hubs. Lokesh underscored the double-engine government of Modi and Naidu, saying the NDAs 94% seat share in the 2024 elections reflected public trust. He said Modis supportthrough initiatives like the Visakhapatnam Railway Zone, NTPC Green Energy, and the Nakkapalli Bulk Drug Parkdemonstrated his commitment to Andhra Pradesh. Lokesh described Modi and Naidu as powerful engines driving development and welfare. On economic progress, Lokesh revealed that in 10 months, the state had secured Rs. 8 lakh crore in investments, generating 5 lakh jobs. A mega DSC notification for 16,347 posts had been issued, alongside major projects including NTPC Green Energy (Rs. 1.85 lakh crore, 57,000 jobs), ArcelorMittal in Anakapalli (Rs. 1.36 lakh crore, 55,000 jobs), and BPCL in Ramayapatnam (Rs. 97,000 crore, 3,000 jobs). He said investments from LG Electronics in Tirupati, renewable energy in Kurnool, Kadapa, and Anantapur, Reliance CNG in Prakasam, and pharma and IT in North Andhra were aimed at uplifting all districts. The government, he added, aimed to create 20 lakh jobs in five years, signalling a robust economic vision.

A fresh proposal for Rs 150 crore has also been submitted for the 202526 annual plan. He reaffirmed the governments commitment to expanding AYUSH services, filling vacancies, and improving public access to traditional healthcare. Furthermore, Satya Kumar Yadav also outlined plans to boost medical tourism in Andhra Pradesh by promoting integrated hospitals, drawing lessons from Keralas successful model.

She demanded that Modi swear on the Amaravati soil not to deceive AP again, emphasising the need for concrete action over symbolic gestures. He said the State spent Rs 10,669 crore under MGNREGA during the last financial year, including Rs 6,194 crore towards wages. SCs will lose their status after converting to Christianity: Andhra High Court
VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has ruled that individuals belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) lose their SC status immediately upon converting to Christianity, thereby forfeiting protections under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The verdict, delivered by Justice N Harinath, came in response to a case involving Pastor Chintada Anand from Kothapalem, Guntur district, who had filed a complaint under the SC/ST Act. In January 2021, Anand, a pastor for over a decade, lodged a complaint with the Chandolu police, alleging that Akkala Ramireddy and others had abused him based on his caste. The police registered a case under the SC/ST Act. However, Ramireddy and others challenged the case in the High Court, seeking its dismissal. The petitioners counsel, Phani Dutt, argued that Anand, having converted to Christianity and served as a pastor for ten years, no longer qualified as an SC member under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950. The order states that SC individuals who adopt a religion other than Hinduism lose their SC status. Anands counsel, Eerla Satish Kumar, countered that Anand held a valid SC Hindu caste certificate, asserting his eligibility for protections under the Act. However, Justice Harinath clarified that conversion to Christianity, where caste distinctions do not exist, nullifies SC status regardless of any existing caste certificate. The court noted that the SC/ST Act was enacted to protect SC and ST communities from discrimination and atrocities, but its provisions do not apply to those who have converted to other religions. The court found that Anand had misused the SC/ST Act by filing a false complaint. Witnesses confirmed his decade-long role as a pastor, and the court criticized the police for registering the case without verifying his status. Justice Harinath quashed the case against Ramireddy and others, stating that Anands complaint lacked legal standing. The court noted that the validity of Anands caste certificate would be subject to scrutiny by authorities, but its existence did not entitle him to protections under the SC/ST Act post-conversion.

VIJAYAWADA: Appearing as a lawyer, YSRCP senior leader Ambati Rambabu sparked amusement in the High Court while making his case during a hearing on Wednesday. While informing the court about the alleged bias of police in registering cases regarding offensive comments against him and his family members in English, the former minister sought the judges permission to switch to Telugu. In response, Justice Tallapragada Mallikarjuna Rao quipped, If we allow you to argue in Telugu, we wont be able to stop you, asking him to continue in English. Ambati informed the court that police registered only four cases against five complaints. He argued that police are obligated to register cases upon receiving complaints. However, government counsel Jayanthi clarified that cases are registered after preliminary inquiries, noting Ambati was not the victim in the fifth complaint. The court directed police to file a counter and adjourned the hearing to June 18, advising the former minister to present relevant arguments to make his case. HCs no to stay TTD tender The High Court declined to stay a tender notification issued by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Central Drug Store for medical supplies to its hospitals. The HC permitted the TTD to proceed with the tender process, however, clarified that finalisation would depend on its verdict. Furthermore, the HC directed the TTD to submit a detailed counter and adjourned the hearing to June. The case stems from a PIL filed by K Balaramudu, who alleged that the TTD favoured specific pharmaceutical brands, violating constitutional principles. TTDs counsel Prabhakar Sharma defended the process as transparent, while the petitioners lawyer JUMV Prasad argued that unequal opportunities could inflate medicine prices. MLAs interference decried Expressing astonishment over an MLA interfering in works under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), the High Court questioned Vizianagaram MLA Aditi Vijayalakshmi Gajapathi Raju about her interference in works finalised by Grama Sabhas. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Ch Ravi, questioned the Collectors issuance of administrative approvals based solely on the MLAs directives, bypassing the Grama Sabha resolutions. The HC directed the government to submit detailed reports and adjourned the case to May 7. The issue stems from a PIL filed by Mamidi Appalanaidu, alleging that the MLA unlawfully modified 889 NREGS works, with the Collector granting approvals without legal scrutiny. Plea for bail closed The High Court closed a petition filed by former I&PR Commissioner Vijay Kumar Reddy seeking anticipatory bail on Wednesday. The ACB case pertains to alleged irregularities in government notifications and bill payments. Acknowledging Vijay Kumar Reddys assurance to cooperate with the investigation, the HC stated that ACB officials are free to take further action if the accused fails to cooperate. His counsel V Maheshwar Reddy informed the HC that his client had responded to ACB notices and pledging continued cooperation. Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, representing the ACB, urged the court to allow legal action against the accused if he obstructs the probe, a request the court granted while resolving the petition.

VIJAYAWADA: Former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the kin of each victim, jobs for their family members, and stringent action against those responsible for the Simhachalam temple wall collapse that killed eight devotees during Chandanotsavam on Wednesday. Terming the untoward incident a man-made havoc due to the State governments negligence, he criticised the coalition for constructing a substandard fly-ash brick wall without reinforced concrete or proper tenders, despite knowing the fact that lakhs of people would attend the temple festival. He condemned the decision to make devotees stand in line adjacent to the unstable wall amid heavy rain, highlighting the absence of basic facilities. After consoling the grieving families, the YSRCP chief pointed to the series of government failures, citing stampedes at Godavari Pushkarams and Tirupati, and animal deaths at Srikurmam. YSRCP leaders Vellampalli Srinivasa Rao, Gudivada Amarnath and Kottu Satyanarayana alleged corruption in tenders and disregard for Hindu sentiments. They demanded a probe into the coalitions mismanagement.
The call to retain Kadapa as headquarters also stems from the regions historical neglect. However, the headquarters of the merged RRBs is set to shift to Vijayawada from May 1.

Peoples capital Amaravati rises again
VIJAYAWADA: In a landmark step toward reviving that vision, the Government of India and the Andhra Pradesh government are resuming full-scale development of Amaravati, signalling what many see as a renewed commitment to participatory development and federal cooperation. The story of Amaravati began in 2014, when the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh left the residuary State without a capital. In the void, an opportunity emerged: to build a capital from the ground up, guided by modern urban ideals. With wide roads, underground power cables, sustainable water systems, and green-blue zones woven into the blueprint, Amaravati was designed to be more than an administrative hub. It was to become a model city for the future. What set Amaravati apart was not just its ambitious design. It was the spirit of the people who made it possible. Nearly 29,000 farmers voluntarily pooled more than 34,000 acres of land in what became one of Indias most lauded Land Pooling Schemes. In just 58 days, a total of 54,000 acres, including pooled land, acquired land, and government holdings, was assembled. The diversity of those who contributed land told its own story: 32% were from Scheduled Castes, 14% from Backward Classes, and others from Reddy, Kamma, Kapu, and Muslim communities. Amaravati, its champions said, was not just a city. It was a collective endeavour, a social contract. On October 22, 2015, PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone at Uddandarayunipalem. For many, it was a day of pride. A moment when a new Andhra Pradesh began to chart its future. But the momentum faltered. When the YSRCP came to power in 2019, the project was put on hold, and construction ground to a halt. Even after the change of guard in AP, the spread of misinformation and politically motivated narratives, including caste-based divisions, undermined the initiative. Now, with the TDP-JSP-BJP coalition, described as a double-engine government, back in power, Amaravati is poised for a revival. On May 2, PM Modi is set to return to Amaravati for a ceremonial relaunch of the project. The event will be held among the very farmers who once turned over their land for APs future, a gesture that carries both emotional and political weight. Expose NDA governments failures, Jagan exhorts YSRCP cadre
VIJAYAWADA: Former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy exhorted the party cadre to highlight the failures of the TDP-led NDA government, and be the voice of the voiceless, besides working towards strengthening the party at grassroots. Addressing the YSRCP district presidents at the party office in Tadepalli on Tuesday, Jagan alleged that the Chandrababu Naidu government had failed on all fronts. Education, health and agriculture sectors have been totally neglected. Corruption has been rampant, and the Red Book constitution is being implemented in the State. All sections of people are expressing dissent over the NDAs destructive politics, he observed. The anti-incumbency factor has set in within the first year of the coalition government, and people are vexed with the irrelevant policies of the NDA government. Farmers are not getting MSP for their produce. Students and other sections of society are being deprived of what they were promised by the NDA, the former Chief Minister remarked. Jagan said mandal committees should be constituted by the end of May, and village and municipal division committees should be formed within the next two months.

TDP used force to win civic byelections, alleges YSRCP
VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP leaders KRJ Bharat and Lella Appi Reddy on Monday denounced the TDP-led NDA for undermining democracy in the municipal byelections, particularly in Kuppam, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidus home constituency. Bharat termed the Kuppam municipal chairperson byelection a Black Day for Democracy, accusing the TDP of using money power and coercion to get YSRCP councillors into its fold despite lacking majority in the municipal council. Bharat vowed to approach the High Court against the NDA for violating norms in the bypolls. Echoing the same, Appi Reddy alleged that the TDP captured power in Kuppam (18/25 YSRCP seats), Macherla, Palakonda, and Tuni through intimidation. He slammed the coalition for the large scale misuse of power with the support of partisan media, and warned of public backlash. Contrasting YSRCPs respect for democratic mandates, he exposed the coalitions desperation though one year term of office is left for the urban local bodies.
CM Chandrababu Naidu invites farmers to Amaravati capital relaunch ceremony
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has extended an invitation to farmers of the capital region to participate in the grand ceremony on May 2, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially relaunch construction works in Amaravati. Describing Amaravati as a divine capital, Naidu said the event will mark a turning point in Andhra Pradeshs history. During an interaction with farmers at his residence in Undavalli on Monday, he underlined the importance of the occasion, calling the construction of Amaravati a critical step for the States future. He lauded the farmers sacrifices, emphasising that it was only because of their goodwill that a world-class capital city could be envisioned. Your generosity will be remembered forever, Naidu told the gathering. Listening to farmers aspirations and concerns, the Chief Minister urged them to actively engage in every stage of Amaravatis development. He assured that the government will facilitate bank loans for the returnable plots allocated to farmers who contributed their lands under the land pooling scheme. Recalling the challenges faced since the capital was first announced in 2014, Naidu criticised the previous YSRCP government for creating confusion and betrayal. Despite attempts to provoke you and derail the capital project, you trusted us and gave 34,000 acres, he said. Sadly, under the YSRCP, the farmers suffered, and Amaravati was branded as a graveyard and a desert. However, your five-year-long struggle and resilience preserved Amaravati. Naidu reaffirmed that Amaravatis sanctity remains intact because of the farmers commitment, and any future development will prioritise their welfare. He also discussed plans for additional land acquisition, clarifying that it will be strictly need-based, such as for the construction of the international airport, cricket stadium, and other key infrastructure projects. Drawing a parallel with the development around Hyderabads Shamshabad Airport, Naidu explained that initial skepticism over land acquisition later led to significant economic growth, benefiting local farmers with soaring land values. He assured Amaravati farmers that a similar transformation awaits them. Connectivity through new bridges, inner and outer ring roads, and infrastructure development will attract major companies and investments, he added. No decision will be taken against your interests. Responding to requests, Naidu agreed to establish a memorial honouring those who lost their lives during the Amaravati capital movement. He announced plans for a museum chronicling the regions history from the Satavahana period to the present movement for Amaravati. Additionally, Naidu promised to launch a special programme to grant land titles to residents living in Gramakantham areas within the capital region who currently lack formal ownership documents. Ministers Ponguru Narayana, Anagani Satya Prasad, Vangalapudi Anitha, and MLA Tenali Sravan Kumar were among the leaders who participated in the meeting. Naidu concluded by reiterating his commitment to standing with the farmers at every step of Amaravatis development journey.
BJP chooses Paka as Rajya Sabha candidate
VIJAYAWADA: The BJP Central Election Committee has announced the candidature of Paka Venkata Satyanarayana for the Rajya Sabha byelection from Andhra Pradesh. Paka, an advocate from Bhimavaram in West Godavari district, has had a long and distinguished association with the BJP and its ideological affiliates. He began his political journey as a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1976, and later became active in student politics through the ABVP during his college days. Joining the BJP in 1980, Paka steadily rose through the party ranks, serving in various capacities, from town general secretary to chairman of the BJP State Disciplinary Committee. He also held key roles such as State convenor for BJPs Pravas Yojana and served as the partys election returning officer. An experienced organisational leader, Paka was the BJPs official spokesperson and vice-president of the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh. He also served as a member of the Bhimavaram civic body, and contested for the chairman post from the BJP. In 2006, he contested as an MLC candidate, and was appointed as a member of Visakhapatnam Port Trust. With decades of commitment to the party and grassroots politics, Pakas nomination is seen as the BJPs move to strengthen its presence and organisational base in the State, ahead of upcoming political battles.
TDP wins mayoral posts, takes control of urban governance
VIJAYAWADA: In a major political triumph, the NDA has secured key mayoral and municipal chairperson posts in the State, further tightening its hold over urban governance. In Visakhapatnam, Pila Srinivasa Rao of TDP, supported by the NDA, was elected Mayor of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). The election, chaired by Joint Collector Mayur Ashok, saw participation from 73 corporators and ex-officio members. Visakhapatnam South MLA Vamsi Krishna Yadav proposed Raos name, with North MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju backing the nomination. TDPs Kovelamudi Ravindra Babu (Nani) clinched the Mayoral post of the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC), defeating YSRCPs Achala Venkata Reddy by a margin of seven votes (3427). The closely contested election was overseen by Bhargav Teja, with Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar and senior leaders attending. A key highlight was TDPs win in Kuppam municipality, a bastion of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. TDP candidate V Selvaraj secured the chairman post with 15 votes against YSRCPs nine. Jubilant celebrations followed, with MLCs Kancharla Srikanth and KRJ Bharath terming it a reflection of public trust. The NDA continued its winning run elsewhere too. In Tuni municipality, Narla Bhuvana Sundari and Achanta Suresh of TDP were elected unopposed as chairperson and vice-chairman after YSRCP councillors boycotted the election. Tuni MLA Yanamala Divya welcomed the transition. In Macherla municipality in Palnadu district, TDPs Shaik Madar Saheb won the vice-chairman post with 23 votes. In Palakonda Nagar Panchayat in Parvathipuram Manyam district, Akula Malleswari, a recent defector from YSRCP, was elected as chairperson unopposed. These victories come as a major boost to the NDA ahead of upcoming local body elections, reinforcing its urban political base across the State.
Capital Amaravati is heart and soul of Telugu people: CM
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu called upon the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders from the State to not only give a rousing welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting the State on May 2 to relaunch the development of Amaravati capital city, but also make it a resounding success. During a teleconference with the NDA leaders on Monday, the Chief Minister said that Amaravati is a symbol of the self-respect of all the Telugus. Naidu also asked all the NDA leaders to see to it that no inconvenience is caused to those who are attending the public meeting to be addressed by the Prime Minister. How a family dreams of having a decent house to live in, similarly the State too should have a capital that its people can proudly claim. As decentralisation of development is the policy of the NDA, all the Central educational institutions have been located in North Andhra, Coastal and Rayalaseema districts since 2014. We will develop all the regions in an equal manner, Chandrababu Naidu said. Pointing out that Telangana is getting 70 percent of revenue from Hyderabad, Karnataka from Bengaluru and Tamil Naidu from Chennai, the Chief Minister said that the State too would get similar revenue after the development of Amaravati. He termed Amaravati as the soul of the State. Observing that the farmers had voluntarily donated their lands for building the capital, the Chief Minister said that, besides constructing the capital on these lands, the government is allotting residential and commercial plots to them after proper development. Industrial parks to come up in 42 constituencies We are making the farmers partners in capital construction, he added. Expressing confidence that the youth would get job opportunities on a large-scale if industries were set up in the State, Naidu affirmed that building roads would not only improve transportation facilities but also strengthen the States economy. He, however, warned against the rivals who were deliberately misleading people and trying to obstruct the development. He told the NDA leaders to alert the public and also explain them about the various development initiatives taken up by the government. The Ministers and the MLAs should take the responsibility of reaching out to the people and explain to them about various government schemes, he added. We are committed to both welfare and development of the State by overcoming all the challenges, Naidu said. The State government is moving ahead by fulfilling the promises made to the people in just 10 months of coming to power, Naidu said and informed the NDA leaders that the Centre had sanctioned funds for Polavaram project, railway zone for Visakhapatnam and `11,400 crore for the steel plant. He also pointed to the welfare schemes being implemented under the new regime, citing the recently issued DSC notification for 16,347 vacant teacher posts. He also announced that investment assistance would be extended to farmers next month under the Annadata scheme. He also announced that setting up of industrial parks in 42 constituencies across the State will begin from next month. Steps will be initiated soon towards realising the One Family-One Entrepreneur by setting up such industrial parks in all the 175 Assembly segments, he added. Stating that the construction of Rayalaseema steel plant too would be taken up soon, Naidu said that Visakhapatnam would be developed as an economic capital while Tirupati would become a spiritual city. Erain-Co in Ramayapatnam and ArcelorMittal Steel in Anakapalle are investing lakhs of crores of rupees, he said and stated that if Mittal plant is completed Visakhapatnam district with two steel plants will become the largest steel producing city in the country. Rayalaseema will be developed as a defence hub, with electronics, automobiles, drones, satellite launching and green-energy sectors, he said.

Andhra CID defers questioning of PSR Anjaneyulu as he develops high blood pressure
VIJAYAWADA: CID officials, who took senior IPS officer PSR Anjaneyulu into custody in connection with the illegal arrest of Bollywood actress Kadambari Jethwani, postponed his interrogation on Sunday after he developed high blood pressure during a medical examination. Anjaneyulu was shifted to Vijayawada Government Hospital after being taken into CID custody from the Vijayawada sub- jail. Following the doctors advice to provide him medical care, officials deferred the questioning to Monday. Anjaneyulu, who served as Intelligence Chief during the YSRCP regime, is accused of pressuring officials and orchestrating Jethwanis illegal arrest. Based on former Vijayawada DCP Vishal Gunnis statement, an FIR was filed against him. The CID claims that Anjaneyulu ordered Gunni to go to Mumbai by booking flight tickets, and Jethwanis subsequent arrest. While former Vijayawada Commissioner of Police Kanthi Rana Tata and Gunni secured anticipatory bail, Anjaneyulu defended himself in court alongside his lawyer. However, the magistrate remanded him to judicial custody. Though there was no direct link between Jethwani and Anjaneyulu, the CID wants to find out the masterminds behind the case, suspecting higher-level political involvement. The magistrate granted the CID three day custody of Anjaneyulu from April 27 to 29.
