Ongole airport project put on fast track, AAI team to visit site today

Kurnool: A team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is scheduled to visit Ongole on Tuesday to inspect a proposed site and assess its feasibility for establishing a new airport. The visit follows a recent field survey conducted by MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, MLA Damacherla Janardhan, and joint collector R. Gopala Krishna. During the survey, the team identified 657 acres of land between Aluru and Alluru villages in Kothapatnam Mandal as a potential location for the project. This initiative is part of the states plan to develop seven new airports, including one in Ongole. MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy has been advocating for this development, discussing the airport proposal with Union civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu. The proposed airport is expected to significantly improve air travel connectivity for the local population and foster economic growth in the region. In August 2024, joint-collector Gopala Krishna, along with other district officials, inspected land proposals in Alluru, Motumala and Aaluru villages in Prakasam district. These lands were originally considered for industrial development under the Vadarevu and Nizampatnam Industrial Corridor (Vanpic) project in 2010 but were later shelved. However, the airport proposal is now being revisited as part of the states infrastructure push. Ongole MLA Damacherla Janardhan has expressed optimism, highlighting that the proposed airport will be located just 5 km from Ongole city, which will provide a significant boost to the districts economy by supporting local industries and creating job opportunities. The Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL) has since identified suitable land parcels and initiated preparations for a pre-feasibility study in collaboration with the AAI. To support this effort, the state government has allocated Rs 1.92 crore for the study, which will be conducted by a multi-disciplinary team from the AAI, with the support of the APADCL.

Focus on important irrigation projects instead of Iconic Bridge, TG suggests to Telugu CMs

TG Venkatesh TG Venkatesh Kurnool: Former MP TG Venkatesh rubbished the speculation that thespian Chiranjeevi would join the BJP. We cannot say that the veteran would join the BJP just because he and his brother Pawan Kalyan have a good rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Venkatesh hoped that an industrial revolution would occur in Kurnool to better the lives of people in the district. The senior leader, belonging to the Rayalaseema region, felt that instead of building the Iconic Bridge across River Krishna, to connect Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the chief ministers of both the Telugu states should discuss other important projects that could improve irrigation facilities. The bridge is planned to be built connecting Somasila in Telangana to Sangameswaram in Andhra Pradesh. The CMs should focus on constructing more projects that can resolve the irrigation and drinking water facilities in the states, he suggested. Venkatesh was speaking to mediapersons in Kurnool on Friday. He said that several YSRC leaders are in a confusion over switching sides to the BJP. He hoped that Andhra Pradesh would become more strong and develop in all fronts through the TD and Jana Sena's partnership with the BJP. Venkatesh expressed concern over the increasing attacks on temple and demanded that the government should act strict on these cases, ensuring severe punishment to the guilty. Reminding that he and a few other political leaders had fought to keep the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana united, before the bifurcation, he said Telangana state was formed due to the support of a few Central ministers. The former MP wanted the Handri-Neeva project to be completed by expediting the works.

Over 80,000 Kurnool beneficiaries lack Sachivalayam links

Kurnool : With a population of approximately 6.30 lakh, about 80,553 people in Kurnool city are currently not associated with any Sachivalayam despite receiving various government benefits. Officials are investigating the reasons behind this anomaly and are working to link these individuals to their nearest Sachivalayam offices to ensure streamlined and efficient service delivery. Earlier this month, the number of people not associated with any Sachivalayam was estimated at around 47,700. Following this finding, Commissioner Ravindra Babu directed the officials to conduct a swift survey in areas where residents were not linked to any ward Sachivalayam offices. The goal is to ensure that these citizens, who are already beneficiaries of government services such as ration distribution, pensions and other welfare programmes, are correctly registered under the relevant sachivalayam. The ongoing survey aims to identify these individuals and promptly connect them with the nearest Sachivalayam office for further official processes. Astonishingly, during the survey, officials discovered that many of these beneficiaries were not listed in government records or associated with any Sachivalayam office, despite receiving their entitled benefits. This discrepancy prompted an intensification of the survey, with officials working quickly to verify the credentials of these people. Commissioner S. Ravindra Babu has emphasised that the details of those not linked to any Sachivalayam are being collected and forwarded to the government for necessary action. He also urged the people to cooperate in completing this survey efficiently to ensure that everyone receives the government welfare programmes they are entitled to.

Despite the State police taking steps to curb illegal activities such as cockfighting and gambling during Sankranti celebrations, the blood sport persisted unabated across the State, with the backing of political leaders. Organisers exerted significant political pressure on both the police and revenue officials, while the publics enthusiasm for the sport left officials largely as passive observers. My cousins and I have come all the way from Kurnool to Bhimavaram for this, said businessman Raghavendra.

45-day Parvetotsavam at Ahobilam Begins

Kurnool: The Narasimha Swamy temple authorities have made all necessary arrangements to celebrate Parvetotsavam at Ahobilam on Wednesday. The lord Narasimha Swamy embarked on a journey to visit devotees, continuing a 600-year-old tradition of personally inviting them to his celestial wedding. As part of this historic event, the lord will tour 33 villages in the Allagadda, Uyyalawada, and Rudravaram mandals over 45 days. Unlike any other Vaishnava temple, the Ahobilam Parvetotsavam features unique rituals and holds deep cultural significance. Every year on Kanuma, the festival begins with Jwala Narasimha Swamy descending from Eguva Ahobilam to Diguva Ahobilam in a grand procession. Narasimha Swamy is carried in a palanquin, accompanied by priests performing traditional rituals. According to historians, the first Peethadhipathi, Srinivasacharya, initiated the Parvetotsavam to fulfill a divine order from the Lord to guide people toward salvation. During the festival, Jwala Narasimha Swamy and Prahladavarada Swamy share a palanquin and visit devotees in the villages. Ahobilam has gained recognition as a premier spiritual destination. In 2023, it was awarded the title of Best Tourist Village by the Andhra Pradesh government and received silk robes from the Telangana government in acknowledgment of its historical connection to the Kakatiya dynasty. Furthermore, a representation has been submitted to UNESCO to recognise the Ahobilam Parvetotsavam as a heritage event. Chief priest Kidambi Venugopalan highlighted the festival's profound spiritual significance. Tradition holds that Lord Narasimha Swamy, believed to have emerged from the Ugrastambham in Ahobilam, plays a pivotal role in the rituals. Local Chenchus sought Bharanam from Swamy in exchange for offering their daughter to him. It is believed that the Lord leaves the temple to seek sustenance for his marriage with Chenchulakshmi Ammavaru and personally invites devotees during Parvetotsavam to offer their support. Additionally, the Annakutotsavam ritual, symbolising the preparation of rice, is performed to sustain the festivities for 45 days.

Local Farmers Turn to G9 Banana for Profitable Yields

Kurnool: Farmers in Nandyal district are cultivating the imported and high-quality Grand Nain (G9) banana variety and reaping good profits. Traditionally, farmers in the region grew varieties like Sungandhalu and Amrutalu. Now they have introduced the G9 variety. Annually, around 10,000 tonnes of this banana variety is produced. The farmers sell them at Rs 25-27 per kg to export firms. In Kurnool and Nandyal districts, bananas are cultivated on 9,435 acres. The G9 banana, a high-yielding variety from Israel, produces high-quality, delicious fruits. The fruit-care-activity method is employed in the cultivation of G9, ensuring larger and longer fruits with excellent yield. Farmers also take special care to enhance the ripening process by covering bunches. The crop is harvested 11-12 months after planting. Each bunch weighs up to 30kg. The yield per acre is 20-40 tonnes in the first harvest, 10-20 tonnes in the second, and 10 tonnes in the third harvest. The bananas are typically 6-8 inches in size, with a richer taste and higher nutritional value compared to native varieties. The G9 variety has gained popularity in Arab countries. Around 10000-12000 tonnes of this produce are exported annually to countries like Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Bahrain. Due to the increasing demand, many companies are showing interest in sourcing bananas from this region. Currently, they are paying Rs 25,000-27,000 per tonne. Farmers can invest up to Rs 3 lakh per acre for two years to get a yield of 30-35 tonnes. Selling the bananas at Rs 25,000 per tonne, farmers can earn up to Rs 4-5 lakh, covering their investment costs and ensuring profit, according to horticulture officials. In Peapully mandal, Nandyal, alone, G9 bananas are cultivated in 2,450 acres. The horticulture department is providing subsidies for G9 banana cultivation. The bananas are graded, packed in airtight covers and transported to Tadipatri and Anantapur, where they are stored in cold warehouses at 13-15C. From there, they are shipped to Mumbai, Nagpur and other locations before being exported to Arab countries by sea and air. Farmers say the price per tonne in the Arab markets is Rs 50,000-60,000. The horticulture department offers subsidies of Rs 30,739 per hectare in the first year and Rs 10,240 in the second year. Tissue culture plants for G9 bananas are provided by nurseries in Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. The cost of each plant is Rs 10-15, with 1,000-1,400 plants required per acre. Farmers typically enter agreements with companies for the initial harvest, with prices fixed in advance. As a result, G9 banana cultivation remains a profitable venture, as explained by Maddileti, a farmer from Peapully.

Rise in Cancer Cases Among Women in Kurnool, Nandyal

Kurnool: Around 2,000 suspected cancer cases have been identified during a survey in Kurnool and Nandyal districts. The majority of the affected individuals are between 30 and 40 years old, with breast and cervical cancers being the most prevalent. The survey revealed that rural populations tend to consult doctors only when the disease has reached an advanced stage. Medical teams, including officers, ANMs, Asha volunteers, and Mid-Level Health Providers, conducted tests for around 2.40 lakh individuals in the two districts. Of the 4 lakh people tested, approximately 2,000 women were suspected having cancer; a majority of these being breast and cervical cancers. Notably, there is a lack of awareness about the disease even among the people in urban areas. The suspected cases have been directed to specialists at the government general hospitals for confirmation and treatment. In Kurnool, records show more than 10,000 cancer patients are receiving treatment under the Arogyasri scheme. Every month, 10-20 new breast and cervical cancer cases are reported to the cancer wing at Kurnool's GGH. In Nandyal, the GGH has set up an outpatient ward and is advising patients to visit Kurnool GGH for confirmation and treatment. Cervical cancer ranks as the second most prevalent cancer in India and accounts for nearly one-fourth of the world's cervical cancer deaths, though these are largely preventable. The Indian government introduced vaccines, Cervarix and Gardasil for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in 2009-2010, with pilot programmes conducted in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Recently, India developed its own affordable and cost-effective HPV vaccine, Cervavac. The HPV vaccines should ideally be administered to adolescents before the start of their sexual lives. Once the cycle begins, the vaccine is ineffective. We found that many women are still unaware of the vaccine and its preventative benefits. This lack of knowledge is contributing to the higher prevalence of the disease in women in their 40s or 50s, said a doctor associated with the survey. Breast cancer, which has no preventive vaccine, remains one of the most dangerous cancers. Medical professionals emphasize the importance of regular annual tests as the primary means of prevention. While vaccine trials for breast cancer are ongoing, they have not yet been introduced into regular vaccination systems. The HPV vaccine, although beneficial for prevention, remains costly and must be administered during adolescence for maximum effectiveness.

Chenchu women lead change in Nallamala with Nannari cultivation in Andhra

KURNOOL: Deep within the remote corners of the Nallamala forest, the Chenchu women, a tribal community long accustomed to living in isolation, are scripting a remarkable story of self-reliance and entrepreneurship. From struggling to make ends meet to becoming role models for their community, these women have transformed their lives by cultivating Nannari (Indian Sarsaparilla) and producing a medicinal juice that is now a profitable venture. Spread across the Srisailam Project limits in Nandyal, Prakasam, and Palnadu districts, the Chenchu women reside in 188 Gudems (tribal hamlets), including 48 in Nandyal, 51 in Palnadu, and 89 in Prakasam. Traditionally dependent on forest produce for survival, the women lacked stable income and access to markets. Their journey of transformation began when they came together to form Self-Help Groups (SHGs), with the support of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA). The women embraced the Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) scheme, a community initiative aimed at adding value to forest produce. Nannari cultivation changed their lines. Starting with 20 acres, the Chenchu men nurtured the plantations, while the women processed the roots to produce Nannari juice. Despite initial challenges, their perseverance paid off. The juice, known for its medicinal properties, became a much sought-after product, selling at Rs 130Rs 200 per litre. Chenchu women like Edamma from Bairluty Gudem recall the transformation. I never imagined we could do something like this. Making and selling Nannari juice has brought us pride and income. We feel like real entrepreneurs now, she said. The juice, which yields 25 litres per kilogram of roots, is now sold locally and exported to other districts and States. Another SHG member, Shivalingamma from Yerramatam Gudem, said, Our lives were once defined by daily struggles. Now, through this project, we have hope. Our children see us as role models, and that makes us proud. As the womens confidence grew, so did their ambitions. They expanded cultivation to an additional 80 acres and refined their production techniques. Today, the Chenchu women are leading a thriving micro-business that not only secures their livelihoods but also preserves their traditional knowledge. This entrepreneurial journey has united the women, who now see themselves as agents of change. They have proven that even in the most remote corners of the forest, resilience and determination can overcome obstacles. From processing roots to packaging and selling the juice, these women have taken control of every aspect of the business, ensuring its sustainability. With each bottle of Nannari juice, the Chenchu women are not just earning an income but sowing seeds of prosperity and inspiring others to follow their lead. Their success, bolstered by the ITDAs support, is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and womens empowerment.

Unlike other parts of the state where crops are harvested by January, locals in these regions celebrate festivals like Dasara and Ugadi with more grandeur, as they coincide with the harvest season. In Kurnool and Nandyal, crops are harvested by April, so Ugadi is the big festival, said Anil Sarma from Kurnool adding that During Sankranti, people focus on traditional rangoli and Gobbemma (made with cow dung) in front of their houses, but there aren't major celebrations. Sankranti in these areas is centred around simple enjoyment with food, rangoli, and traditional delicacies, such as Bhakshyam, made with chana dal and jaggery. For us, Sankranti is just a time for food and small festivities. There isnt much focus on offering prayers to elders or other traditions like in coastal areas. We dont usually buy new clothes or invite relatives for Sankranti. We wait for Ugadi, which is the real 'Pedda Pandaga' (big festival) here. said P. Narasimha Rao from Venkata Ramana Colony in Kurnool city. On Kanuma, the third day of the festival, non-vegetarian dishes are commonly enjoyed, a tradition seen throughout Rayalaseema and coastal areas. The consumption of non-vegetarian food during winter is considered a feast by many in the region. Traditional customs are also different here, with more relaxed food preferences compared to the coastal areas, where people strictly adhere to vegetarianism on Sankranti day. While some areas still see participation in cock fights, they are less widespread and not as popular as in the Godavari districts, with no large-scale betting involved. Overall, Sankranti celebrations in these regions remain modest, focusing on family, food, and simple customs.

CM Chandrababu Naidu emphasises Build AP to boost realty sector

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has said the construction sector plays a pivotal role in the development of Andhra Pradesh as about 40 lakh families are dependent on it for their livelihood. Speaking after inaugurating NAREDCOs 12th Property Show at Chebrolu Hanumaiah Company on Friday, he highlighted the governments efforts to rejuvenate the construction sector under the Build AP initiative, which he described as a continuous process, essential for the States economic development. He asserted that the government has taken significant measures to support the construction sector, including the provision of free sand, an important raw material. People have the right to demand access to free sand, and the government has simplified the building regulations to expedite the plan approvals, he said. Lashing out at former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for his destructive governance that left the construction sector in disarray, Naidu promised to resolve the issues confronting the sector on a war footing, support developers and enable seamless execution of development projects. Real estate prosperity creates wealth. Our goal is to rebuild Andhra Pradesh, and make it a thriving State in the country,Naidu added. He also announced that the government will launch a dashboard in the next two months to address grievances and streamline building permissions. Encouraging the construction sector to embrace innovation, he urged organisations such as the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) and the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) to actively participate in these initiatives. Mentioning that Amaravati is a future benchmark for urban development in India, he said the capital city will be developed into a model city with an investment of Rs 50,000 crore. The NDA government will complete the 183-km Outer Ring Road around the capital city to improve connectivity to Guntur. Highlighting his vision of developing Andhra Pradesh as a model State, he said cities such as Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool and Tirupati will also be developed to compete on the global stage, not just Amaravati.

We will rebuild AP: Naidu

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has said the brand Andhra Pradesh is now making faster strides forward. We are moving ahead with the 'Build AP' slogan and we are firm in encouraging the construction sector that was completely demolished in the last five years, Naidu said on Friday, adding that the state would be converted into a green hydrogen hub. Addressing the builders after inaugurating the NAREDCO Property Show show in Guntur, the chief minister said, We have begun rebuilding the state immediately after coming to power seven months ago. He recalled the launch of works for the `2.8 lakh crore in AP by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week and said, Investments are slowly coming to the state now with Brand AP image. The CM hoped tourism would pick up so that the state's revenue will grow in all sectors. Only then will the real estate sector too grow as over 40 lakh families are depending on this. Pointing out that the free sand supply system has been launched by the TD-led state government, he said, We have provided the right to everyone to question if free sand is not supplied to them. Naidu said the share of real estate in the GDP is 7.3 per cent. He expressed the confidence that it would grow by 20 per cent by 2047 to reach the $5.8 trillion mark. If all sectors grow simultaneously the living standards of the people also will increase, he said. Stating that the previous government has missed even TDR bonds, the chief minister said stringent action would be taken against corruption and irregularities while the innocents will be protected. We are now launching works by attracting 4 lakh crore investments in the last seven months. As a result of this, four lakh people will get employment. We have set a target of providing 20 lakh jobs in these five years, he said. Naidu said the Amaravati works would be resumed with an investment of `50,000 crore. This is a self- sustaining project. Assets are generated where real estate flourishes. He said a ring-road has been designed around Amaravati to an extent of 183km, which would be far bigger than Hyderabads Outer-Ring-Road that he had built as CM. Once this is complete, Guntur and Amaravati will be merged, he said. Pointing out that a waste-to-energy plant was set up in Guntur and that it functioned well, the CM claimed, Amaravati will create a record of sorts in the country. While the new city will be developed as the best model city, the cities like Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool and Tirupati too will be developed in a similar manner.

Palamuru will be developed as rice bowl after PRIS completion: Bhatti

Wanaparthy: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Thursday announced that Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation (PRLI) scheme would be completed in the next three years and Palamuru once known for migrations will be transformed as rice bowl after completion of the project. The Deputy Chief Minister, who inaugurated various development programmes in Wanaparthy and Nagar Kurnool, addressed Congress party workers meeting organised at Wanaparthy district headquarters. Projects like Koyal Sagar, Bhima, Kalwakurthy, Nettempadu over Krishna River were completed by Congress governments alone and it was the Congress government that issued the government order for the PRLI scheme, Bhatti said. He said that the Alimineti Madhava Reddy project, Srisailam tunnel and Dindi projects would be completed on a priority basis. He along with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao reviewed the progress of projects on Krishna River. He informed the party workers that the peoples government was formed thanks to all their efforts and it was implementing all the assurances given to people before elections. All the Ministers in the Cabinet were working for 18 hours a day for the people and the welfare schemes were being implemented on a large scale. He called upon the party cadre to reach out to people and talk about the welfare programmes being extended to them. While Telangana was achieved after a long struggle to get irrigation resources, funds and jobs for its people, the TRS, which came to power with surplus budget, slipped the State in their 10-year rule into a debt ridden State, Bhatti criticized. The Congress government paid Rs.66,000 crore this year towards repayment of loans and interest borrowed by TRS rulers. When the State was formed, the government was paying Rs.6,400 crore towards loan repayment and now the government was paying Rs.66,000 crore. Sharing the governments expenditure on fulfilling election promises, Bhatti said under Rytu Bharosa, in the first year Indiramma Peoples government credited Rs.7,600 crore into the accounts of farmers. Another Rs.22,000 crore was credited within a span of three months towards waiver of farm loans upto Rs. 2 lakh. The BRS government had taken almost 10 years to implement loan waiver of Rs.1 lakh in four installments to farmers and due to inordinate delay it was barely sufficient to pay the interest while principal loan amount remained as it was. But the Congress government fulfilled its loan waiver promise within three months, he said. He asked the Congress party workers to go boldly to farmers and tell them if any one did not get loan waiver upto Rs.2 lakh, they should give the information and they would get their loan waived. BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) and MLA T Harish Rao were uttering lies that loan waiver was not done. Bhatti said while it was suggested that Rytu Bharosa be given for five acres or 10 acres, the Congress government put it for discussion in the legislature and later the Cabinet decided that all cultivable lands be given assistance under Rytu Bharosa. The Congress government increased the Rytu Bharosa amount from Rs.10,000 to Rs 12,000. From January 26, the day when the Constitution authored by Dr. BR Ambedkar came into existence, the Rytu Bharosa amount of Rs 8,400 crore will be credited into the accounts of farmers. For the first time, under the Indiramma Atmiya Bharosa scheme, an amount of Rs.12,000 will be credited into the accounts of landless agricultural labour. In the energy sector too, the previous BRS government which said there would be no power if Congress party was elected to power, could not complete even one power generation project in their tenure. The Congress government was supplying quality power without power cuts. Though the TRS leaders launched a false campaign on social media about power cuts, we had confidence that people would not be misled, he said. Bhatti disclosed that the State government was paying Rs.12,000 crore every year to power utilities under free power supply to the farm sector. The government was also paying insurance premiums on behalf of farmers under the crop compensation and Rytu Bhima schemes. Power generation in Bhadradri and Yadadri power plants will be commenced so that farmers will not have any problem to cultivate lands under borewells. Apart from thermal power plants, the State government formulated plans for generation of green power. The surplus power will be supplied to other States by the Telangana government. Listing out other welfare schemes under implementation, Bhatti told the party workers that the insurance limit under Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme was increased from Rs.5 lakh to Rs.10 lakh. The Cabinet decided that in the first phase, Indiramma houses will be sanctioned to 4.5 lakh people and new ration cards will be issued to all without ration cards. The TRS leaders forgot the promises made to people and indulged in corruption and various scams during their 10 years rule and pushed the State into a debt trap. Bhatti said that the State government was taking up major programmes like Skills University, Sports University, construction of Regional Ring Road (RRR) and Musi Rejuvenation projects. TRS leaders are greedy for power and eager to loot people and they cannot think of peoples welfare or States progress, Bhatti alleged. He said he had visited all government hospitals in the State during Covid as a CLP leader and now arrived at Wanaparthy as Deputy Chief Minister. Whenever I visit a place, it is only for peoples welfare, he explained.

Unique Wedding Ritual of Kodipalli Clan Where Bride, Groom Swap Roles

Kurnool: A unique pre-wedding ritual, deeply rooted in tradition, continues to be practiced by the Kodipalli clan of Patikanenivaripalem in Sanampudi village of Singarayakonda mandal in Prakasam district. The ritual stands out because of the reversal of roles between the bride and groom, showcasing the communitys rich cultural heritage and reverence towards their ancestral customs. The tradition involves the groom dressing in a sari, complete with jewellery, flowers, and other adornments typically reserved for a bride. The bride dresses as a man with a shirt and dhoti, taking on the appearance of a groom. This dress reversal is in homage to the Kodipalli clans family deity Nagaarpamma, who is believed to protect and bless the community with prosperity and well-being. The Kodipalli community comprises around 100 families and is primarily engaged in agriculture and dairy farming. On the designated day of the pre-wedding ritual, the groom, transformed into a bride, holds a trident in one hand and sandalwood paste in the other. The bride, dressed as a groom, carries a bonam or offering on her head. In their transformed roles, the couple, accompanied by family members, relatives and villagers, lead a procession to the sacred Veerula Jammi Chettu, a significant religious site for the community. During the procession, the bride and groom do not converse but interact only with their immediate family. This silence is said to symbolise the solemnity of the occasion. It is believed to deepen the connection between the couple. On reaching the Veerula Jammi Chettu, the couple offers prayers and presents offerings in gratitude. This custom has been passed down through generations by ancestors of the Kodipalli clan as a means to ensure prosperity, compatibility and harmony in the couple's married life. Elders believe that by experiencing each others roles for a day, the bride and groom gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for one another, said K. Venkataramaiah of Sanampudi village.

Prakasam Farmers Opt More for Maize Cultivation

Kurnool: Interest in maize cultivation is growing among farmers in Prakasam district. Last year, maize was cultivated in approximately 50,000 acres, while the area has expanded to around 65,000 acres this year. Traditionally, farmers in Prakasam focus on crops such as tobacco, red gram, cotton, chillies, black gram, groundnut and paddy. However, maize has gained attention due to its relatively short cultivation cycle and the stability it offers compared to other crops. Maize is harvested within 90 days, making it a quicker option. Other crops are more susceptible to untimely rains and pest attacks. Depending on the seed variety, yields range from 3 to 4 tonnes per acre, with prices varying between `25,000 and `40,000 per tonne. Traders provide advance payments for maize cultivation, offering between `10,000 to `20,000 per acre as investment. Farmers are increasingly attracted to maize cultivation due to its quick turnaround time and rising market prices. Traders encourage maize farming by offering prices above the support price and advancing the necessary investments. As a result, the area under maize cultivation is steadily increasing each year, said an agriculture officer from Giddaluru. The cost of spraying chemicals and other inputs required for maize cultivation is initially covered by traders, reducing the financial burden on farmers. This lack of upfront investment has contributed to the growing popularity of maize as a crop choice. Last year, maize was cultivated on 50,000 acres, and this year, it has expanded to 65,000 acres. Of this, 40,000 acres are dedicated to seed production and the remaining 25,000 acres are being cultivated for commercial purposes. In the six mandals of the Giddaluru constituency, the maximum area under maize cultivation this year is around 20,000 acres. Agriculture officials anticipate that more land will gradually shift to maize cultivation in the coming months due to its growing appeal.

AP officials begin tiger census in Nallamala

Kurnool: Aiming to provide an accurate estimate of the tiger population in the state, the forest department has initiated an extensive tiger census in the Nallamala forest, covering the Atmakur, Nandyal, Giddaluru, and Markapur divisions. This critical survey began on January 1 and will continue until February 10. As part of the survey, trap camerasan essential tool for modern wildlife monitoringhave been installed to capture images of animals. These images are analysed using advanced technology to identify individual tigers based on their unique stripe patterns. Over the years, the population of tigers and leopards in the Nallamala forest has shown a gradual increase. Historically, tiger counts relied on identifying footprints, which posed challenges due to the wide roaming range of these animals. The adoption of modern technology now ensures precise estimates. Tigers are uniquely identified by the patterns of their stripes, much like humans are recognised by fingerprints. To facilitate this census, the Nallamala sanctuary has been divided into four sections. The existing 12 forest ranges have been expanded to 19, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Approximately 2,000 camera traps have been strategically placed, with two cameras assigned per 1,000 areas. These infrared-enabled cameras automatically take pictures when any animal crosses their beam, providing clear and consistent data for analysis. Captured images are processed in a biological lab, where computers analyse the stripes to identify individual tigers. Each identified tiger is assigned a unique number. To date, 166 tigers have been registered in the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve area over 50 years. However, the most recent census conducted by the NTCA in 2024 officially confirms that Nallamala forest is home to 87 tigers. Of these, 32 are males, 40 are females, 4 are unclassified, and 11 are cubs.

Irregularities Surface in Sparsha Darshanam at Srisailam Temple

Kurnool: Sparsha darshanam allowing devotees to touch the Siva Linga at the Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in Srisailam has become a money churner for a segment of employees entrenched in the temple administration, a recent probe conducted by the temple's executive officer has revealed. For devotees visiting the revered Srisailam, sparsha darshanam of Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy is a cherished part of their pilgrimage. Historically, sparsha darshanam had been provided to all devotees. However, due to crowds multiplying and increasing demand for Arjitha Sevas, temple authorities implemented a revised policy two years ago. Free sparsha darshanam could be had from Tuesday to Friday between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. But temple authorities discontinued this service on December 1, 2024, citing the growing rush of devotees who prefer sparsha darshanam. Authorities decided to limit such darshan to devotees purchasing 500 tickets. Currently, 500 tickets for the darshan are sold online, primarily for weekends and Mondays. However, many devotees struggle to secure these tickets online. Thus devotees turn to local brokers and temple staff, who facilitate access to sparsha darshanam using alternative darshan tickets like Vriddha Mallikarjuna Swamy and Vedashirvachanam tickets. This has resulted in loss of revenue that accrued from the 500 tickets, in addition to violation of the official rule. This led to the temple executive officer holding a probe. This revealed that a segment of the staff has become entrenched and is exploiting the system for personal gain. They collect money from devotees and allow the darshan, thus undermining the integrity of temple services. An official of the temple said the temple executive officer must strictly enforce the Endowments commissioner's directive of mandatory internal transfers every six months to promote transparency and avoid such irregularities.

Descendants of Maddikera Yadava Kings Continue Preserving Tradition

KURNOOL: Descendants of the Yadava kings who ruled from Maddikera in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh are continuing to maintain their lifestyle as per their long-standing tradition, despite the financial burden some of them now face. One of these is the practice of maintaining horses and participating in festivals, especially the Vijayadashami celebrations. Though maintaining horses has become increasingly expensive and poses challenges, the Yadava community is determined to uphold its legacy. The tradition of organising horse races on Vijayadashami has continued over the centuries. Three of the prominent families belonging to Vemanagari, Chinnanagari, and Peddanagari have remained committed to preserving the tradition despite the associated risks as well as the financial burden. Our ancestors had been zamindars. They continued the ancient customs due to their affluence. Now, we are only nominal rajas. We cannot afford to continuously maintain a horse for racing it, said Jamedar Jagadeeswar Rayudu, a member of the Yadava Raja community who works as a driver at the Pathikonda RTC depot. Yet, he has maintained the family tradition. Jagadeeswar Rayudu says they purchase a horse specifically for the race. They sell it once the festival is over, as its maintenance is a financial burden. However, this is not the case when it comes to Eeswara Rayudu, Jagadal Rayudu and Uddhanda Rayudu. Each of them spends at least 10,000 per month on horse care, which includes expenses for feed and healthcare. When they need to buy a horse, they prioritise a good-quality white horse, which can cost about 70,000, imposing a financial burden. But the former kingly families continue to invest in horses. Diwakar Rayudu, a member of the Yadava community from Maddikera, shared his familys deep connection with the tradition lasting over scores of generations. During the Dasara festival, his family participates in the procession and horse races. Though there are around 40 Yadava raja families in the village, only three groups currently participate in the races, despite the associated risks. Diwakar recalls tragic accidents that occur during the celebrations. Jamedar Pridhviraj lost his life due to a fatal fall from the horse. Last year, a member of the Yadava Raja clan suffered serious injuries while racing. He is yet to fully recover. Two years ago, two of Diwakars horses died in an accident during the Dasara festivities. Despite such personal losses, the community remains steadfast in preserving the horse-racing tradition, a symbol of Maddikeras cultural heritage.

NGRI Says Tremors in Prakasam District Pose No Danger to Life

Kurnool: Scientists of the Hyderabad-based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) have said tremors in the Mundlamuru and Talluru areas of Prakasam district are due to tectonic adjustment within the fault underneath the Gundlakamma River catchment area. The vibrations and sounds experienced by people living in the area are natural. They are due to subsurface adjustments going on within the Gundlakamma fault. They are minor and without any signs of turning dangerous, said Suresh, a scientist from the NGRI. The Mundlamuru and Talluru areas within Prakasam district have been experiencing a series of tremors since December 21. This prompted a team of scientists from NGRI to conduct a detailed seismic survey of the area, review seismograph data at Addanki and analyse the ground conditions in the region. Scientists noted that the region lies over the fault underneath the Gundlakamma River catchment area. It experienced a 5.4 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale in 1967. The recent tremors included an earthquake of 3.1 magnitude, which gradually diminished in intensity over subsequent days. Scientist Suresh explained that the area falls within Zone 3, wherein mild earthquakes are possible, which are typically not severe. Given the technical data, he asked people living in the area to remain calm, as the tremors and sounds are not a sign of any impending danger.
