Sam Bankman-Fried says he'll testify next week about FTX Collapse

Embattled FTX co-founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried said today that he will testify before Congress next week. After a Twitter back-and-forth with committee chair Rep. Maxine Waters, he agreed to testify about the crypto exchanges sudden collapse. I still do not have access to much of my data professional or personal. So there is a limit to what I will be able to say, and I wont be as helpful as Id like, he tweeted this morning. But as the committee still thinks it would be useful, I am willing to testify on the 13th. The House Committee on Financial Services will hold a hearing on Tuesday investigating FTX. His agreement to testify is an about-face from last week when he tweeted that he only would appear after he finished learning and reviewing what led to the companys rapid downfall. Waters replied, Based on your role as CEO and your media interviews over the past few weeks, its clear to us that the information you have thus far is sufficient for testimony. He testimony for the House Committee will likely be remote, according to The Wall Street Journal . Leaders of the Senate Banking Committee, holding a separate FTX hearing next week, have threatened to subpoena him if he doesnt also agree to appear in front of their panel. But that may be tough to enforce since he lives in the Bahamas. Michael M. Santiago via Getty Images His testimony could include a public showdown with John J. Ray III, FTXs current CEO overseeing bankruptcy proceedings, who is also testifying Tuesday. Ray hasnt minced words about Bankman-Frieds erratic and misleading public statements about FTX. Never in my career have I seen such a complete failure of corporate controls and such a complete absence of trustworthy financial information as occurred here. Bankman-Fried resigned last month after Binance backed out of a deal to buy FTX, citing concerns discovered while conducting due diligence. FTX then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, capping off the collapse. The company currently faces more than 100,000 creditors , but that number could expand to over one million. Hollywood, never an industry to turn down a high-profile downfall story, quickly pounced. Amazon has already greenlit a limited series about FTX helmed by the Russo brothers.

Remembering C. Rajagopalachari on his birthday, December 10

Informally known as Rajaji or C.R., Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (10 December 1878 - 25 December 1972) was an Indian lawyer, statesman, and champion for Indian independence. The last Indian Governor-General was Rajagopalachari. Apart from leading the Indian National Congress, he also held the positions of premier of the Madras Presidency, governor of West Bengal, minister of home affairs for the Indian Union, and chief minister of the state of Madras. Rajagopalachari was one of the first individuals to receive the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. He also created the Swatantra Party. He was a strong supporter of world peace and disarmament and fiercely opposed the use of nuclear weapons. Throughout his life, he also picked up the moniker Mango of Krishnagiri. Tajagopalachari was born in the village of Thorapalli in the Krishnagiri district of the Madras Presidency (currently the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu) and educated at Central College, Bangalore, and Presidency College, Madras. He entered politics and eventually rose to the position of President of the Salem municipality. He joined the Indian National Congress and took part in the agitations against the Rowlatt Act by joining the civil disobedience, non-cooperation, and Vaikom Satyagraha movements. Rajagopalachari braved the possibility of going to jail in 1930 when he organised the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha in opposition to the Dandi March. Rajagopalachari was appointed as Premier of the Madras Presidency in 1937 and held office until 1940, when he was forced to retire as a result of Britain's declaration of war against Germany. Later, he rejected the Quit India Movement and favoured cooperation over Britain's military effort. He advocated for talks with both the Muslim League and Muhammad Ali Jinnah and put up what is now known as the C. R. formula. After serving as the Governor of West Bengal from 1947 to 1948, the Governor-General of India from 1948 to 1950, the Union Home Minister from 1951 to 1952, and the Chief Minister of Madras State from 1952 to 1954, Rajagopalachari was appointed Minister of Industry, Supply, Education, and Finance in the Interim Government of India in 1946. He left the Indian National Congress in 1959 and started the Swatantra Party, which ran against the Congress in the elections of 1962, 1967, and 1972. In Madras state, under the leadership of C. N. Annadurai, Rajagopalachari played a key role in organising the anti-Congress alliance that won the 1967 elections. The song Kurai Onrum Illai, set to Carnatic music, is credited to the distinguished writer Rajagopalachari, who also contributed significantly to Indian English literature. He promoted the upliftment of Dalits and helped start the temperance and temple entrance movements in India. He has been under fire for implementing the contentious Madras Scheme of Elementary Education in Madras State as well as making Hindi mandatory.

Former FTX CEO Bankman-Fried says will testify to Congress over its fall

The former CEO of the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX said in a tweet Friday that he is willing to testify to Congress next week, but that he will be limited in what he can say and that he won't be as helpful as he'd like to be. The tweet came in response to a tweet from House Financial Services Committee Chair Maxine Waters, who on Monday requested that Bankman-Fried attend next week's hearings over the collapse of FTX. Waters said in a series of tweets to Bankman-Fried that based on multiple media interviews since FTX collapsed that it was clear to us that the information you have thus far is sufficient for testimony. FTX failed last month in what was essentially a cryptocurrency version of a bank run, when customers tried to withdraw their assets all at once because of growing doubts about the financial strength of the company and its affiliated trading arm, Alameda Research. Since its collapse, FTX's new management has called the cryptocurrency exchange's management a comple

Mandela review a Madiba musical with fridge-magnet philosophy

Young Vic, London A strong cast cannot conceal the thinness of this superficial account of South Africas great liberator This musical about the extraordinary life of the South African freedom-fighter turned statesman promises so much. Backed by members of his family , it is led by Broadway talent including Michael Luwoye in the lead role and director Schele Williams. And it begins powerfully, with the Sharpeville massacre of 1960 when peaceful protest was brutally ended by machine gunfire and dozens of deaths . But for a two-and-a-half-hour production it is astonishing how little we learn about the main players, from Madiba to the African National Congress colleagues who surrounded him, as well as Winnie Mandela and their children. At the Young Vic, London , until 4 February Continue reading...

OPINION | How Modi scripted landslide win in Gujarat

Gujarat Election results 2022: The people of Gujarat scripted history on Thursday by giving a record-breaking landslide win to BJP in the assembly elections. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will take oath on Monday (Dec 12), after his party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, virtually steamrolled the opposition. BJP has been ruling in Gujarat for the last 27 years, and by 2027, it will have completed 32 years of uninterrupted rule. In the evening, while addressing a victory rally outside BJP headquarters in Delhi, PM Modi said that the people of Gujarat have broken all past records, both in seat share and vote share, since the formation of Gujarat. BJP won a whopping 156 out of a total of 182 seats, while the previous record was set in 1985 when the Congress had won the highest number of 149 seats. BJPs vote share this time rose from 49.1 per cent five years ago to 52.5 per cent this time. Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal who had been flourishing a supposedly Intelligence Bureau report about his party likely to get majority, had to eat humble pie. AAP won only five seats, while the main opposition Congress which had won 77 seats five years ago, could manage to win only 17 seats this time. The celebration outside BJP headquarters on Thursday evening clearly depicted the aura of brimming self-confidence. Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, most of the cabinet ministers were present, while several thousand BJP workers thronged the rally. Modi said, the victory is big, the responsibility is big, and we have to fulfil the aspirations of peopleI had said during my campaign that Bhupendra will have to break Narendras record and he did it.Since 2002, each of my steps was scrutinized and criticized, but I never took umbrage. I ensured that there must be no mistake. India is going ahead in its march towards progress and our aim is make India a developed nation by 2047. There were wild celebrations by jubilant BJP workers in almost all the cities of Gujarat. Firecrackers were burst along with drumbeats, and the workers sprinkled coloured power on one another. BJPs voting percentage of 52.5 per cent said it all. Even if the votes of all the opposition parties and independents are counted together, the BJP left them behind. The 1985 landslide win of Congress under Madhavsinh Solanki took place in the aftermath of Indira Gandhis assassination that had triggered a huge sympathy wave across the nation. The Congress, at that time, had set up the KHAM caste combination consisting of Kshatriyas, Harijans, Adivasis and Muslims. This time, Modis 156 landslide win broke all previous records. None of the caste combinations worked. This was the seventh consecutive victory for BJP in Gujarat. The tsunami of popular support for Modi was complete. Bhupendra Patel will be the first CM of Gujarat to sit in the assembly with the support of more than 150 MLAs. He was made the CM only 15 months ago, in September last year. At that time he had the support of only 99 MLAs. On Thursday, Bhupendra Patel thanked Gujarat BJP chief C. R. Patil, the man behind the gargantuan state party machinery. The CM said, the landslide win indicates the level of love and trust that Narendra Modi enjoys among the people of Gujarat. To understand the reasons behind the landslide win, one needs to go through the results from Ahmedabad and Surat. In Ahmedabad, BJP won 19 out of 21 seats, a strike rate of 90 per cent, while in Surat, it swept all the 16 seats, a strike rate of 100 per cent. BJP got good support from Muslim dominated constituencies in Ahmedabad too. Kejriwals AAP had pinned high hopes on Surat, but failed to open its account. Congress too failed to win a single seat in Surat. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi, who won from Majura seat in Surat, said, the people have soundly replied to all those parties who were trying to divide Gujarat. Harsh Sanghvi belongs to the new, young crop of BJP leaders. Alpesh Thakore, who left Congress and joined BJP, won from Gandhinagar seat. Patidar movement leader Hardik Patel who left Congress and joined BJP won from Viramgam. After their victory, both Alpesh Thakore and Hardik Patel said, Congress is no more working for the aspirations of the people of the state. They said, Congress views on national and religion-related issues were totally opposed to the prevailing sentiments of Gujarati people. This, they said, was the reason why Congress had to face a shameful defeat. Hardik Patel went a step further. He said, there is no space for any other party except BJP in Gujarat for the next 25 years. If the Congress does fails to reform itself, it will cease to exist in Gujarat, he added. The result from Morbi, where the hanging bridge disaster killed 130 people and took place a few days before the announcement of elections, surprised everyone. Keeping popular sentiment in mind, BJP denied ticket to its sitting MLA and minister Brajesh Merja and fielded Kantilal Amritiya, who had personally jumped into the river to save many lives. Amritiya won by a margin of 61,580 votes. BJPs win in Gujarat after the end of polling was a foregone conclusion, but nobody expected the Congress to fare so badly. AAP leaders, who were claiming that they would come to power, never dreamed that they would have to contend with only five seats. Opposition leaders, who were saying a few days ago that Modi had to take out a 50-km long road show in Ahmedabad to save his party from defeat, had to eat humble pie. The landslide victory of BJP in Gujarat was not achieved because of Modis five-day campaign and four-hour road show. The Prime Minister had begun preparations for Gujarat five years ago, when BJP won only 99 seats in 2017. Modi had then made up his mind to score a landslide win in 2022. He worked hard to achieve this objective. After the 2017 elections, several Congress MLAs deserted their party, one by one, and joined BJP. Modis eye was also on local and caste equations. He targeted those leaders who had a good base among tribal voters. Modi inducted three MPs from Saurashtra in his cabinet, and then prepared his plan to take the wind out of anti-incumbency wave. In a single stroke, he replaced the entire bunch of ministers in Gujarat, including the then chief minister Vijay Rupani. He made a Patidar, Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister, and after a few days, brought Hardik Patel and OBC leader Alpesh Thakore into BJP. With full care, Modi laid out his matrix of local and caste equations, and stumped the Congress completely. In his poll campaign, Modi spoke of Gujarati pride (asmita), and in the span of a month, he launched a large number of projects, captivating voters. He ensured that Gujarat bagged the Rs 20 billion semiconductor project and the Air Force transport aircraft project. After preparing the field, Modi went full throttle in his campaign, covering each region of Gujarat. He made emotional appeals to the people, and reminded them of the old record of Congress rule. The result was, BJP broke all records in vote and seat share in the history of Gujarat. The reason behind the historic defeat of Congress also lies in BJPs victory mantra. Congress failed to get the requisite number of seats (18) to claim the post of leader of opposition in the assembly. Top Congress leaders on Thursday refused to speak about the partys worst performance in Gujarat. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, on being asked, briefly said: What can we say since we have lost. We will sit together and analyse. We will find out why we lost. What Kharge said, graphically describes the reason behind the pathetic state of Indias oldest political party. Congress leaders may be at a loss to explain the reasons behind the pathetic performance, but lower level Congress workers know why their candidates lost. They went to the state party office in Ahmedabad on Thursday, when the counting was going in. They pulled down a countdown clock and smashed it into pieces. The countdown clock was installed by Gujarat election in-charge Rajasthan minister Raghu Sharma, on which was written, the countdown for change has begun. There will be Parivartan (change) on December 8. Some Congress workers went out on the streets and loudly said, it is not BJP but Gujarat Congress leaders, who made our party lose. It was left to Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to rub salt into their wounds. He said, Congress was out of race when the election began. Gujarat was going to the polls, but the Congress leadership was busy with Rahul Gandhis Bharat Jodo Yatra. If such a situation continues, Rahul Gandhi will have to take out a Congress Khojo Yatra. It is true that the Congress did not fight the Gujarat elections seriously. Rahul Gandhi made a guest appearance only once in Gujarat and addressed two rallies. Priyanka Gandhi did not go to Gujarat for campaigning. The party was fighting the elections under Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and his confidante Raghu Sharma. The new Congress president Kharge addressed a few rallies during the last leg of elections. Kharge may be an old hand and experienced Congress leader, but I feel that if anybody expects that Congress will get votes in his name in Gujarat, then it is simply mindless. Congress made this mindless mistake. The party leadership may now come forward with several arguments. Some may say that Rahul Gandhi is not accountable because he did not campaign in Gujarat. Some have already started saying that AAP and Asaduddin Owaisis AIMIM ensured the defeat of Congress by dividing the Muslim vote bank. I feel such arguments are useless. I have gone through the results of Gujarat in detail. Kejriwals party won only five seats. There are 36 seats, where if the votes polled by Congress and AAP are added, then the sum is more than what the BJP candidates polled. Out of these there are 13 seats including Khambhalia, Jamjodhpur, Dharmapur, Limbdi, Limbkheda, Byara, where AAP got more votes than the Congress candidates. In other words, AAP lost these seats due to Congress. There are 23 seats, where Congress candidates lost because of AAP. So, AAP leaders can also claim their candidates lost due to Congress. I think this argument is incorrect. Kejriwals claim about IB report indicating AAPs win in Gujarat, is now being openly mocked by BJP leaders, including party chief J P Nadda and state party chief C R Patil. Nadda is right. Kejriwal had given it in writing that BJP will lose and Gujarat will witness a change. Kejriwal had also made three more predictions. He had predicted that his state party chief Gopal Italia, CM candidate Isudan Gadhavi and Alpesh Katharia will win by big margins. All three of them lost. Gadhvi lost in Khambhalia, Italia lost in Katargam and Katharia lost in Warchha. For Kejriwal, the only relief is, his party garnered 12.9 per cent votes. Isudan Gadhavi made the claim that, AAP may have won five seats this time, but in 2027, it will repeat BJPs landslide win. Kejriwal is right that AAPs performance in Gujarat was more than expected, but less than was being claimed. He however succeeded in getting his 10-year-old party the status of a national party from the Election Commission. Kejriwals party scores well in those states where the Congress is either weak or is not fighting the election strongly. In Uttarakhand, Congress gave a tough fight to BJP, and most of the AAP candidates forfeited their deposits. In Punjab, Congress leaders fought among themselves, and AAP got a bumper win. The latest example is Himachal Pradesh, where the Congress fought the BJP, scored a majority, and AAP got only 1.1 per cent votes. It failed to win a single seat.

Chrisanghis: The rise of the Christian right in Kerala

Religion Though the term Chrisanghi has been around for some time, it became popular in August 2021 after it featured in a speech delivered by a young priest named James Panavelil. Haritha John Photo: CASA | Facebook The ancient rivalry between the two Abrahamic religions Christianity and Islam has often degenerated into bloody conflicts in other parts of the world. But in India, the relationship between Christians and Muslims has been shaped less by their differences and more by their shared experience of living as minorities among a Hindu majority. This common ground is beginning to erode in Kerala with the emergence of a virulently Islamophobic generation of upper-caste Catholics who are building deep ideological bonds with right-wing Hindutva over a shared hatred of Muslims. Dismissed as fringe elements by the Christian intelligentsia until a few years ago, they were disparagingly labelled Chrisanghis for pursuing the agenda of the Sangh Parivar. These right-wing Christians have gone on to own the label and today many of them proudly self-identify as Chrisanghis. One such self-defined Chrisanghi is 33-year-old George M who migrated to Canada two years ago but continues to watch political developments in Kerala with a hawk-eye. George is an active member of the Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action (Casa), a group in north Kerala defined by its contempt for Muslims. He is an active participant in district-level Casa WhatsApp groups and other groups like the Warriors of Cross. They tend to be confused with the other CASA (Churchs Auxiliary for Social Action), a humanitarian arm of 24 Protestant and Orthodox churches, but their agenda is diametrically opposite. The Casa and Warriors of Cross have one thing in common their revisionist stands on Christianity and their unbridled hatred for Islam and Muslims. Like every other person in these groups, George also believes most of the hate speech and propaganda he hears, such as that the Muslim population is skyrocketing, or that Muslims are taking over the country. George states clearly that he doesnt mind being called a Chrisanghi. Though the term has been around for some time, it became popular in August 2021 after it featured in a speech delivered by a young priest named James Panavelil. James is an assistant vicar at St George Church in Ernakulams Varapuzha. He was criticising the controversy over the Malayalam film Eesho, directed by Nadirshah, who happens to be a Muslim. Many Christian fundamentalists, including priests, had questioned giving the film the Malayalam version of Jesuss name. Be a human first, then you will be a saint. When the film was titled Eesho, Christians here lost their cool. There were many films in the past with similar names but this time they have started a war. In social media, we have a new name Chrisanghi. We were not like this earlier. Now, we have more hatred in us than others. This is religiosity, we dont need that. We need spirituality, which is to love each other, the priest had said in a viral speech. Following the speech, he was subjected to massive cyber bullying. Though James used the term to criticise fundamentalists, it ended up lending legitimacy to the word itself. Soon, many people started saying Proud to be a Chrisanghi on social media profiles, comments, and shows. Growth of Christian extremist groups in Kerala Casa is a growing organisation with committees in every district. They were one of the first among the many Christian extremist groups that emerged in Kerala in recent times. Several other groups and YouTube channels with preachings that are capable of harming communal harmony have also gained popularity. Groups like Casa have a ready roster of issues around which they mobilise Christians against Muslims. They run social media campaigns about narcotic jihad, love jihad, halal food, and the hijab. Never mind that there is no evidence to back these conspiracy theories. George regularly posts crime stories on his social media profiles in which Muslims are the accused. Casas social media pages are filled with posts on love jihad, narcotic jihad, and the anti-halal campaign. They bombard their audiences with content about Christian persecution in Islamic countries but conveniently ignore the state of affairs in India, where attacks against Christians and their institutions by Hindutva groups have seen an alarming spike since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power. Even the 2021 attacks on Karnataka churches were not condemned by Casa or other such groups. It is common to find posts calling for an economic boycott of Muslims, an idea also advocated by a handful of mainstream politicians. We have WhatsApp groups, discussions of current situations, and some casual meetings in church. We keep a keen eye on all the girls in our church. Any attempts by them to get into any relationship with Muslim boys will be blocked, a youth from Kasaragod, who is an active member of Casa, said. I know that Casa might be linked to the BJPs Minority Morcha or some Sangh Parivar groups, I am not sure, but we share common interests with the BJP. We have a common enemy, we will not let India turn into an Islamic country, George added. Preventing interfaith marriages, particularly those where the groom is Muslim, is one of Casas top priorities. The recent death by suicide of college student Nanda Vinod (19), where the man accused of abetting the suicide MK Abdul Shuhaib (20) is a Muslim, was used by Casa and its satellite groups to run a massive hate campaign against Islam and Muslims. Whether it is the Coimbatore car blast or the Mangalore RSS workers murder, all are employed to run political campaigns against Muslims by Casa. Most heated discussions organised by these new-age Christian right-wing groups take place on the Clubhouse app. It has several groups that hold discussions on Islam. Most of the discussions are framed to challenge the historic fact that both Muslims and Christians have a common prophetic tradition started by Ibrahim or Abraham. They do not believe that Moosa and Isa are Moses and Jesus. Many even claim that these similarities were spread by Islam to target Christianity. Christheeya Viswasa Prathirodikal (Defenders of Christian Belief), Proud Catholics, Apologists Preach Islam, Warriors of Cross, and Christian Youths are some of the organistaions that hold discussions on such topics. Even priests, pastors, and nuns participate in these talks. Love jihad was the most popular topic until sometime ago, many citing certain interfaith marriages to prove that it exists. Historical issues between Islam and Christianity in Armenia to Hagia Sophia have been discussed in these groups. These discussions stress that Christianity should not have a fraternal relationship with Islam. Besides the hatred and mistrust towards Islam, Keralas contemporary politics, in which the Hindu right is making deep inroads, has also paved the way for the growth of these groups. Though most of the Christian population has traditionally been supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF) headed by the Congress, two factors have led to their estrangement. One factor is that a section of the Catholic church has drifted towards the BJP and the second is the traditional rivalry between Christian groups and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a powerful party within the UDF formation. Among these, Christian right groups believe that UDF is ruled by the IUML. According to them, IUML functions only for the Muslim community. The rift between Muslims and Christians had resulted in a split in the vote share too. PC Georges defeat in Poonjar in the 2021 Assembly elections has been attributed to the alienation of the Muslim population owing to his Islamophobic comments. The IUMLs vote share also decreased in some prominent Christian areas. Syro-Malabar Christians, also known as Syrian Christians, are a traditionally wealthy, landed community who claim Hindu-Brahmin origins. They have also accumulated enormous social capital compared to the Latin Catholics. In an earlier article published in TNM, G Pramod Kumar explained the reasons that attract the BJP to the Syro-Malabar population. They carry with them the same caste-based elitism thats associated with Hindus. They are considered to be upper-caste Hindu converts, he wrote. Many leaders of the church have cited an inequality in the distribution of minority scholarships between Christians and Muslims. They blame the IUML and the political pressure it exerts as the major reason for this. A Kerala High Court order on May 29, 2021, quashed a state government order from 2015 providing scholarships in 80:20 ratio to Muslims and to Latin Christians and converted Christians, saying it was legally unsustainable. Kerala witnessed much tension between various groups leading up to the judgement. Casa and its connections Though some group members believe that Casa has links with the Sangh Parivar, the leadership has always denied this. Casa president Kevin Peter had participated in the Hindu Maha Sabha conference in April in Thiruvananthapuram. However, he denied any connections with the Sangh Parivar. Are the Catholic churches in Kerala, especially the oriental rite of Syro-Malabar, backing the extremist group? Though none of the dioceses have openly extended support to the group yet, many of the leaders have been supporting Casa covertly. We have huge support from many priests. During the last Assembly elections (2021), we had gone to different parishes to campaign for BJP candidates. We were welcomed by the parishes, a Casa member from Kasaragod said on the condition of anonymity. The fact that they do not openly endorse the BJP allows these groups to gain a wider audience among those Catholics who are wary of the Hindu right but also Islamohobic in their outlook. On May 26, a video of prominent Catholic preacher Xavier Khan Vattayil extending support to Casa appeared on social media. He said that the organisation is in the hearts of many Catholics across Kerala and that the organisation is not alone. The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) had extended support to the love jihad and narcotic jihad claims. But on September 12, Father Joshy Mayyattil, a representative of KCBC, posted in his Facebook page that Casa is a terrorist organisation within the Christian community. He condemned Xavier Khans post supporting Casa. These saffron flag-bearers who pray by making the sign of the cross make us think that the Syro-Malabar Church is moving towards saffronisation. These people persuaded Achan [Xavier Khan] to openly support a movement that had rooted itself in hatred and joined hands with the Hindutva forces, Joshy said. The priest also lashed out at the YouTube channel Shekinah News for allegedly supporting Casa by spreading false news. The priest also spoke about how Casa originated and alleged that it has close connections with the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Casa was seeded through an RSS network called Christian Helpline, but now BJPs Minority Morcha is behind it. A considerable number from the Syro-Malabar Church is within their net. It is also true that the extremist Chaldeans and those caught up in their social media groups Modi devotees have started proudly calling themselves Chrisanghis. But there can be no doubt that the synod, bishops, priests, monks, and laity of the Syro-Malabar Church are committed to preserving Christian love, the unity of the Church, and the secularism of India, he said. Christian Helpline was instituted in 2017 by the Kerala BJP Minority Morcha with the intention of campaigning against love jihad. The helpline was initiated by Renjith Abraham Thomas, who is the former Malappuram district secretary of the Minority Morcha. Church and Islamophobia It is not just groups like Casa that are spreading Islamophobia. Many Catholic churches do this both directly and indirectly, with the endorsement of the higher clergy. During the Sunday mass on September 4 in a Catholic church in Kasaragod, the parish priest was furious that the attendance in a meeting held for mothers was low. He said, What are you waiting for, the evil has reached your homes. Your daughters are going on the wrong path. There are predators from terrorist groups waiting for your daughters. The girls of our community are easily falling for them. Mothers are responsible for their daughters. That is why you should participate in the class. This warning from the priest came only a few minutes after a circular from the Thalassery Archbishop Joseph Pamplani was read out. In the circular, the bishop had said that the eight-day Lent from September 1-8 is a remembrance of the incident where Christian women gathered inside a church seeking protection for their virginity from gentile kings. He went on to add that the Lent should be dedicated to protect Christian girls from religious terrorist groups. In the last few years, the Catholic church in Kerala has never failed to find a reason to speak about love jihad and about how to prevent their women from marrying into the Muslim community. Various bishops have spoken about love jihad and alleged that Christian women are being lured by Muslim men. Last September, the Pala Bishop Joseph Kallarangat added the accusation narcotic jihad as well, which triggered a huge row, and barely avoided blowing up into communal violence. A huge rally, which had the potential of causing clashes, was conducted by Muslim and Christian groups in response to the bishop. A parish priest under the Thalassery diocese said, We had classes in the church under the leadership of KCBC and the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) for nuns and priests. Special classes will also be given to parents, separately and together. They cannot be careless and later grieve. We give them awareness that love jihad is not a bogey, that it exists in our society. He added, Mothers are responsible for what path their daughters choose. The different Syro-Malabar Catholic dioceses in the state receive frequent circulars from their respective bishops regarding this. In January 2020, a synod (a high profile meeting of bishops) of the Syro-Malabar Church was held, where it stated that love jihad is real and that Christian women are under the threat of being forced to undergo religious conversion after being allegedly trapped in fake relationships. A circular was sent by Cardinal George Alencherry based on the discussions in the synod over love jihad. However, some of the churches under the Ernakulam-Angamaly diocese refused to read them. This may not be seen solely as an expression of dissent towards the churchs view on love jihad. The Ernakulam-Angamaly diocese is also in the midst of a huge row sparked by financial discrepancies and liturgical conflicts that have turned a large section of the priests against Alenchery. Following this, a few other dioceses also issued circulars warning about Christian women falling in the trap. The Thamarassery diocese even published a handbook on love jihad, which claimed that more than 160 girls had fallen prey to it. The book was meant for class 11 and 12 catechism students. Antony Tharekkadavil, a north Kerala priest, is popular for his talks that are telecast on different Christian YouTube channels. His statements, such as those referring to characters in the Quran as fictional, have provoked the spread of religious hatred. He argued that Christian women are the most easy target of Jihadis. The church and the organisations associated with it, such as the KCYM, have openly supported him and have given him a heroic status. He was one of the torchbearers of the anti-halal campaign that claimed that it is a sin for Catholics to consume halal food. The church and love jihad Many consider the developments in the church as a reflection of the Islamophobia present all over the world. J Prabhash, former pro-vice-chancellor and head of the department of Political Science in the University of Kerala, said that globally there is a tension between the two religious communities, which is being reflected here also. What we see in Kerala is a reflection of the global scenario, he explained. Prabhash, however, added that in reality, there are many interfaith marriages between Christians and Muslims, Christians and Hindus, and Muslims and Hindus. Highlighting the inherent patriarchy of religious communities, he pointed out, It is not that a particular religion targets girls from other religions, but these communities are worried only about their girls marrying men belonging to other religious backgrounds. Many church reformists have pointed out that the Catholics in Kerala are insecure about losing their members. Even earlier too, Hindu-Christian marriages received more acceptance than Muslim-Christian ones. Hinduism was not considered a major threat then. But Islamophobia was always present in the church, as was the case with any other community, Jaiby Joseph, social critic and popular YouTuber said. According to him, love jihad discussions have now become more explicit after 20 Keralites left the country and joined Islamic State (ISIS). Some among them were Christians who converted to Islam. Jaiby also alleged that the church has close connections with the BJP. Even when it came to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the KCBC supported the BJP government. Father Varghese Vallikkatt, spokesperson and secretary of the KCBC, wrote an opinion piece in the RSS mouthpiece Janmabhoomi on January 7, 2020 supporting CAA. He stated, No other party except the BJP has understood or taken a stand on how to tackle political Islam. None of the political parties in the country which focus on the minority vote bank will have the courage to do this. In January 2021, the heads of all three Catholic denominations (Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, and Latin) met with PM Modi to reportedly discuss various issues, including the Kerala Catholic churchs stand on love jihad. The bishops also raised the issue of their discontent with the distribution of scholarships for minority students. A month before that, in December 2020, Modi had met with representatives of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, both Syrian denominations although not Catholic, to broker peace in a decades-old property feud. The Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the former in July 2017. The churchs sudden affinity with the BJP has been cited as the next reason for its explicit Islamophobia. Indulekha Joseph, a lawyer and member of the Kerala Catholic Church Reformation Movement (KCRM), said that the Catholic leaders who spew hatred are opportunists who dont have any ideology of their own. They go with the politics that are beneficial to them. The church has great wealth and it serves their need to go with Sangh Parivar interests as they can hide all their illegal wealth accumulations, she alleged. Raghav Chadha raises Kartarpur Sahib issue in Parliament, kept this demand

Amritsar: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) veteran leader and Rajya Sabha member from Punjab Raghav Chadha on Friday (December 9) raised the important issue of devotees visiting Shri Kartarpur Sahib in Parliament. He enumerated the problems faced by the devotees going there during this period and also asked the House to take important steps for them. Actually, a passport is mandatory for the pilgrims going to Shri Kartarpur Sahib, along with this they also have to pay a certain fee. Chadha has demanded changes in these essential rules. AAP MP Raghav Chadha said that when the Shri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor was opened a few years ago, the whole world was shaded in the colors of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Raghav Chadha has said that every person wants to go there to visit Shri Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, but the devotees have to face many problems. The first problem is a passport. You must have a passport. If you do not have a passport, you cannot visit Shri Kartarpur Sahib. The Government of India should take up this important issue with the Government of Pakistan. He said that the second problem is that every pilgrim has to pay a fee of $20, which is about Rs 1600, to go for darshan. If 5 members of the family want to go every year, then they will have to spend 8 thousand rupees for the year. This fee collection should be stopped so that the devotees can go to Shri Kartarpur Sahib comfortably. Will Himachal slip out of Congress's hands even after winning?

Shimla: As soon as the Congress wins the Himachal Pradesh, the fight started among the leaders regarding the chair. Now a big piece of information is coming out about this. According to sources associated with Pratibha Singh, if the CM is not made from the family of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, there will be a split in the party. Pratibha Singh's camp claims that 25 MLAs are with the Virbhadra family. Don't commit the mistake of making Himachal Punjab by making another person the Chief Minister. This claim is being seen as a direct challenge to the high command. In such a situation, if there is a split in the Congress, then the BJP will not move back from taking advantage of it and as a result, the won Himachal can also go out of the hands of the Congress. Let us inform you that, Pratibha Singh has already said that, the election was fought and won in the name of Virbhadra Singh, so the Virbhadra family has the right to the Chief Minister's chair. At present, Pratibha Singh is presenting her side by holding meetings with central supervisors and in-charge Rajeev Shukla. Pratibha Singh, the wife of former CM Virbhadra Singh, also said in a warning tone that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are also near and this should also be kept in mind. Talking to the media before the discussion on the post of CM and the meeting of the Legislature Party, Pratibha Singh said, ''To whom leadership should be given, it is a sensitive matter. People are looking very seriously in this direction. People feel that our feelings should be respected.'' Pratibha Singh said that, when we were contesting this election, we saw that our condition was not good, then we played the card of Virbhadra Singh Ji. His name was taken, his works were counted and people voted in favor of Congress in his name only. He said that we are voting as a tribute to Virbhadra Singh. Now there is a feeling among the people that this family has served for a long time, so if this opportunity is given to this family, they will continue to serve in the same way. Now Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra has reached Rajasthan, but the pictures of Shanti Dhariwal coming out of this yatra seem to be questioning his political future. Two pictures of Congress Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' are going viral on social media. In the first picture, CMGehlot's group minister Shanti Dhariwal himself is seen, while in the second picture, Shanti Dhariwal's son Amit Dhariwal is also seen. In both pictures, Rahul's security personnel are seen pushing Shanti Dhariwal and his son Amit Dhariwal. Looking at these two pictures, it seems that Gehlot's minister is not getting any attention in this yatra, while Shanti Dhariwal is considered to be the biggest leader of the Kota Congress. Shanti Dhariwal was also given the responsibility of leading Rahul's visit to Kota, but the demeanor meted out to him during the yatra is in the headlines on social media. How did Sonia Gandhi become Cong president after removing Sitaram Kesri?

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi is celebrating her 69th birthday today. At present, even though Mallikarjun Kharge is Congress's national president today, it cannot be denied that Kharge could have sat on the chair by defeating Shashi Tharoor in the elections without Sonia Gandhi's consent. However, this is not the first time that Sonia Gandhi has worked behind the scenes to keep the reins of the party in her hands. Former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and former Congress President Sitaram Kesri have also been victims of this. Sonia Gandhi was so angry with Narasimha Rao that the former PrimeMinister of the country was not even given a place in Delhi for his funeral. Even after being a veteran Congressman, Sonia Gandhi did not allow his body to enter the Congress headquarters. Later, seeing Sitaram Kesari's stature increasing, Sonia Gandhi also expelled him from the party. Sitaram Kesri's departure was worse than Narasimha Rao's. Veteran Gandhian and freedom fighter Sitaram Kesri was actually thrown on the road by Sonia Gandhi loyalists after the 12th Lok Sabha (1998) election. In this election, Sonia Gandhi held more than 130 rallies. But, even after this, the Congress was reduced to 142 seats. Even the Congress lost its traditional stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. A pro-Sonia faction of the Congress blamed Kesari for the defeat. However, Kesari did not hold a single rally in this election. However, it was argued that the Congress did not benefit from Sonia Gandhi's charisma due to Kesari's weak leadership. In fact, the political ground was being prepared by leaders loyal to Congress to increase Sonia Gandhi's stature. Sonia Gandhi loyalists alleged that Kesari failed to hold talks with south Indian leaders as he did not know English. Even Kesari, a freedom fighter, was labeled anti-Savarna. Kesari belonged to the OBC caste. He was accused of conspiring with socialists like Mulayam Singh and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Sitaram Kesari resigned from the post of President on March 9, 1998. However, shortly after this, he immediately took a U-turn and withdrew his resignation. Kesari had decided to step down from the post in the open session of the AICC and on the day of his choice. However, on March 14, 1998, a meeting of the Congress Working Committee was held at 24, Akbar Road. Kesari also attended this meeting. But Kesari was unaware that he had already been stabbed in the back. Sonia Gandhi's supporters had earlier decided to present two proposals at a meeting at Pranab Mukherjee's residence. The first proposal was to remove Sitaram Kesri and the second was to make Sonia Gandhi sit on the chair of national president. Sitaram Kesari also got to know the truth in a short time. At the meeting, only Tariq Anwar stood up to greet him. Pranab Mukherjee thanked Kesari for his service to the party, in a way, this thank you was a sign of Kesari's journey to end soon. After this, Kesari got up from the meeting and left. Tariq Anwar walked back and forth to his room. A group of leaders led by Manmohan Singh went to convince him, but Kesari flatly refused to come back. Political pundits also say that after this Kesari imprisoned himself in a room. After this, the room was opened and Kesari was forced to sign the resignation paper. After this, Sonia Gandhi reached the Congress headquarters. While Sitaram Kesari was going to sit in his car at that timeyouth Congress workers also tried to pull his dhoti. By the time Kesari came out of 24 Akbar Road, the nameplate bearing his name had also been torn and thrown into the dustbin and a new printout had been put up at the spot that read: 'Congress President Sonia Gandhi'. Pratibha Singh openly expresses her right to CM chair of Himachal, Congress in trouble

Shimla: After winning the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, the real challenge before the Congress is to choose a 'chief minister'. Amid the possibility of factionalism in the party over the CM's post, state Congress unit president Pratibha Singh has expressed her family's right to the chair. She has said that the condition of Congress was not good in the elections, but in the name of Virbhadra Singh Ji, people have voted in favor of Congress. She has clearly said that the high command will decide the chief minister, but the wishes of the people should be kept in mind. Virbhadra Singh's wife Pratibha Singh also warned that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are also around the corner and this should also be kept in mind. Talking to the media before the discussion on the CM's post and the legislature party meeting, Pratibha Singh said, Who should be given the leadership is a sensitive matter. People are looking at this very seriously. People feel that our sentiments should be respected.'' Pratibha Singh said that, when we were contesting this election, we saw that our condition was not good, then we played the card of Virbhadra Singh Ji. His name was taken, his works were counted and people voted in favor of Congress in his name only. She said that we are voting as a tribute to Virbhadra Singh. 5 times Congress leaders' direct attack on PM Modi backfired

Opposition's personal jibes at the Prime Minister ahead of key elections are not a new trend during high voltage election season. Recently, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge compared PM Modi to Ravan while addressing a rally in poll-bound Gujarat. Like this attack, history is testament that every attack against PM Modi had resulted in a rise in his popularity. From Sonia Gandhis Maut ka Saudagar comment in 2007 to Mani Shankar Aiyars Neech-aadmi jibe, Prime minister Narendra Modi has weaponised every personal attack and used them to his own advantage for electoral gains. US House passes defence bill scrapping Covid vaccine mandate for military

A bill to rescind the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for members of the U.S. military and provide nearly $858 billion for national defense passed the House on Thursday as lawmakers scratch off one of the final items on their yearly to-do list. The bill provides for about $45 billion more for defense programs than President Joe Biden requested, the second consecutive year Congress significantly exceeded his request, as lawmakers seek to boost the nation's military competitiveness with China and Russia. The House passed the bill by a vote of 350-80. It now goes to the Senate, where it is expected to pass easily, then to the president to be signed into law. To win bipartisan support for the bill, Democrats agreed to Republican demands to scrap the requirement for service members to get a COVID-19 vaccination. The bill directs Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to rescind his August 2021 memorandum imposing the mandate. Only days earlier he voiced support for keeping the mandate in effect. Rep.
