Did Hrithik Roshan refuse to shoot in UP for Vikram Vedha? Makers clear the air

New Delhi: The Reliance Entertainment on Monday issued a clarification regarding the shooting locations of Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan starrer Vikram Vedha, saying that the movie has been extensively shot in India. Reliance Entertainment took to their social media handle and said, We have been noticing a lot of misleading and totally unsubstantiated reporting on Vikram Vedha shooting locations. We clearly want to state that Vikram Vedha has been shot extensively in India, including Lucknow. A portion of the film was shot in United Arab Emirates in October-November of 2021 since it was the only location providing the infrastructure for a bio-bubble that accommodated crew of such scale, also allowing building of sets in a studio during the preceding months of the shoot. We chose to do that out of health and protocol concerns. Any attempt to twist these set of facts are clearly mischievous and untruthful, the statement read. Also we would like to emphatically state that at Reliance Entertainment while we welcome suggestions from creative talent, the production and budgetary decisions are a centralised prerogative, the statement further added. #VikramVedha pic.twitter.com/CX7eyddNTn Reliance Entertainment (@RelianceEnt) July 4, 2022 Vikram Vedha based on the Indian folktale, Vikram aur Betal, is said to be an edge-of-the-seat action crime thriller which tells the story of a tough police officer who sets out to track down and hunt a menacing gangster. The film is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies as it marks the return of two superstars collaborating in a high-octane action film after two decades. 'Vikram Vedha' is presented by Gulshan Kumar, T-Series Films and Reliance Entertainment in association with Friday Filmworks and YNOT Studios. The film is directed by Pushkar & Gayatri and produced by S Sashikanth and produced by Bhushan Kumar. Besides Hrithik and Saif, it also stars Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, Yogita Bihani, Sharib Hashmi and Satyadeep Mishra. 'Vikram Vedha' commenced filming in October 2021, and after various schedules the films principal photography has been successfully completed. Post-production works are now in full swing and the film is set for a worldwide theatrical release on September 30. (UNI)

TIFF 2022 will run from September 8 to 18 without any of the restrictions that were in place in the previous two years. There were only 50 films in 2020 and 150 in 2021, with fewer in-person shows and more hybrid online shows. There were hardly any press or industry guests from other countries. Usually, thousands of guests come over from different parts of the world to celebrateThe Festival of Festivalsin Toronto every year. Were not going to do online screenings like we did in the last two years, said TIFFs Chief Executive Cameron Bailey during a press conference in April this year. Although TIFF has five screens on its premises plus around 25 other theatres, most of the films were screened online due to COVID-19 regulations for two years. This time, the authorities have decided to use online platforms only to relay press meets and other non-screening programmes. TIFFs ticket pricing tiers were announced a month ago, even before the titles of the films were publicised. Prior to the festival, TIFF has already chalked out its summer screenings where Indian movies are in the limelight. Between August 4 and 27, TIFF will present notable works from Satyajit Rayand his contemporaries. Ray directed 36 works in a span ofover 40 years (1950 to early 1990s), which include fiction, documentaries and shorts. Hes the unquestioned leader of Indias parallel cinema movement who dared to portray the post-independence legacy, poverty, patriarchy, corruption and the like. His films are acclaimed worldwide for remaining deeply humanist and hopeful. Although a year late due to the pandemic, its encouraging to note that TIFF is celebrating the centenary of one of Indias greatest filmmakers. This series will have extended introductions by its curator, the renowned film critic Meenakshi Shedde. The series will start with the filmmakers personal favouriteCharulata(The Lonely Wife, 1964), about a housewife who wipes out her literary faculties in order to save her affair. The move brought her, she said at the time, a peace in my soul. Jamie Foxx broke the news on Twitter, announcing that he and Diaz would be starring in a new film for Netflix called, appropriately, Back in Action . I dont know how to do this, she said; Foxx then recruited the retired and then not-retired NFL star Tom Brady to give her a little guidance on how to stage a comeback. Continue reading...

The new MacBook Air starts at $1,199, and Apple hasnt given an exact release date yet, only saying it will come in July. However, the latest rumors suggest it will arrive on July 15. Malayali filmmakers work on Kashmir restricted by YouTube on Indian govts request

Censorship Sandeep said that when films that show reality are made, the authorities want to ban it because it's not the narrative they want broadcasted as opposed to films peddling propaganda. Binu Karunakaran Two creative works, including a nine-minute short film on human rights violations in Kashmir by Kerala-based filmmaker Sandeep Ravindranath, have been geo-blocked by YouTube, a video-streaming platform considered to be a powerful tool for activism and engagement by filmmakers and artists. Sandeep Ravindranath's Anthem for Kashmir video, shot in Baramulla (an army town under Armed Forces Special Forces Act) has visual references on forced disappearances and military oppression and is accompanied by a Tamil protest rock track. The film was released on May 12, 2022, by filmmaker Anand Patwardhan and Carnatic vocalist T M Krishna and reviewed by several media outlets. A letter from YouTube Legal Support Team sent to Sandeep Raveendran said they have received a notice from the Examination Committee of India's Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeITY) seeking blocking of the video, pursuant to Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Expressing their inability to share the communication from MeITY, the YouTube letter said this is since the notice itself is confidential. It also asked him to provide feedback to the Examination Committee of MeITY regarding the legality of the content. The review process of the Examination Committee may result in a final order directing continued blocking. As per our obligation to comply with local laws, we may comply with such an order without further notice, the communique said.A state and not just any state, a nuclear state, a state with nuclear bombs is afraid of a video camera and few lines written on a piece of paper. It's almost comical how deep this insecurity runs, said Sandeep Raveendran, who is currently in the United States. Sandeep added that when films that show reality are made, they want to ban it because it's not the narrative they want broadcasted. It turns out it is legal to produce and exhibit propaganda movies like Kashmir Files. Not just Kashmir Files, but we know a Savarkar movie is coming and a Godse movie is in the works, these movies are promoted by the government, in hallowed spaces of democracy like the Parliament no less. They provide tax breaks and government employees are given days off to go and watch these movies with families. On the other hand, if you make a film to counter these propaganda narratives they are banned immediately, he said. Sandeep Ravindranath, who also composed the music for the film, has served as a live-sound engineer for several creative projects. His shorts Tharattu Pattu, The Bookshelf, Santhana Gopala, Diary of an Outsider and Sub Brothers have been screened at over 100 film festivals in 20 countries and have won numerous awards. Deplatforming content from streaming sites like YouTube is particularly worrying for filmmakers who cannot hope for releases through OTTs or theatres.I am shocked and dismayed that a sensitively made film like Anthem for Kashmir has been taken down from Youtube. This is simply not tolerable and this decision must be reversed at once as it flies in the face of all democratic norms, said filmmaker Anand Patwardhan in an email. While the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has previously blocked YouTube channels accused of peddling fake news utilising the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, these videos were censored under section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The clause 69A of the Act gives unrestricted power to the government to block public access to information through any computer source in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or even public order. Last year, the government had used the controversial clause to ban 59 Chinese apps and withhold several Twitter accounts, including that of The Caravan, a news magazine. The Indian Express had recently reported content viewing restrictions on a new song by Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, who was shot dead last month. Moosewala's song titled SYL, highlights the 40-year-old water dispute between Haryana and Punjab over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal. During the height of militancy in Punjab, the construction of the canal, which was launched in 1982, left a trail of violent incidents. Moosewala's song featuring archival footage brings to light the days of militancy, the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, and the recent farmer agitation by farmers mostly from Punjab. Moosewala's song has over three crore views and both the videos can be viewed in India if accessed through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). TNM wrote to Google, which owns YouTube, for a response on allegations of censorship and seeking details of other YouTube videos that have been withheld following requests from the Indian government. We have clear policies for removal requests from governments around the world. We review government removal requests when notified through the correct legal processes, and also review content for violations of our Community Guidelines. Where appropriate, we restrict or remove content in keeping with local laws and our Terms of Service after a thorough review. All of these requests are tracked and included in our Transparency Report, an YouTube spokesperson said.

Sony Pictures Networks Secures a Dynamic John Doe Injunction to Protect Copyright Infringement of the India Tour of England Cricket Series

Business Wire India Sony Pictures Networks (SPN) obtained a Dynamic John Doe injunction order from the Hon'ble Delhi High Court to prevent copyright infringement for the India-England International Cricket Series in July 2022 (Cricketing Series). This will protect SPN against unauthorised and illegal IP disclosure on the internet and other social media platforms. As per the Dynamic John Doe Order, certain Multi System Operators (MSO), Local Cable Operators (LCO) and Websites/Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) are prohibited from communicating and broadcasting to the public the Cricketing Series due to their indulgence in piracy and infringing SPN's copyright in the broadcast and digital transmission rights for the Cricketing Series. The said Order prohibits the Websites/URLs in any manner, from hosting, streamlining, reproducing, distributing, making available to the public and/or communicating to the public or facilitating the same on their websites, through the internet in any manner whatsoever, any cinematograph work, content, programme or event in which SPN has copyright. The said Order further prohibits MSOs and LCOs from in any manner hosting, streaming, reproducing, distributing, broadcasting, making available to the public and/or communicating to the public any unauthorised and unlicensed reproduction or broadcast on the local channels or through other means of various copyrighted content, including but not limited to the Cricketing Series through cable network. Further, in general, various Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are directed to block access to the Websites/URLs. If SPN discovers any other websites / MSOs/LCOs infringing its copyrights in respect of the Cricketing Series, it can approach the Hon'ble Delhi High Court under this John Doe Order and seek requisite reliefs. In addition, a Local Commissioner has also been appointed to enforce the provisions of the said Order against MSOs/LCOs indulging in piracy by unauthorizedly distributing or transmitting/communicating/redistributing the Cricketing Series without a valid license from SPN. SPN had acquired an exclusive license from the England and Wales Cricket Board Limited (ECB) to broadcast/communicate the said Cricketing Series to the public in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and the Maldives in 2021. However, the said Cricketing Series had to be stopped midway, after 4 test matches, owing to rising Covid cases. The current John Doe Order protects SPN's copyright for the remainder of the Cricketing Series, starting July 2022, which comprises one test match, three T20 matches and three One-Day International matches. The matches will be available on SPN's linear channels SONY SIX, SONY SIX HD , SONY TEN 3, SONY TEN 3 HD, SONY TEN 4, SONY TEN 4 HD, and its digital platform SonyLIV. OM Movie Review: 'Om' is the story of a commando battling with the past, Aditya's hard work was spoiled by weak writing!

The film 'Rashtra Kavach Om' starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjana Sanghi, Jackie Shroff, Prakash Raj, and Ashutosh Rana has been released in theatres. If you are planning to watch this action-thriller film, then definitely read this review once. Story: Action and Emotions Confuses Audience The story of the film is of Om Rathod and his innocent father Dev Rathod. Dev Rathod is a nuclear scientist who was going to make a national shield for the country, which would protect the country from all kinds of nuclear attacks, but before he could make it, the traitors of the country kidnapped him. Dev is accused of treason and Om sets out to save him in order to eliminate him and prove his father's innocence. Now whether Om will be able to find his father and prove him innocent or whether his father is really a traitor, will be known after watching the film. Acting: Physique Strong but act weak Aditya has worked hard on his physique which is clearly visible but his hard looks in many emotional scenes suggest that he needs to learn more acting. In the same way, Sanjana has also worked hard on the action, but the action does not suit her innocent face. You can dare to watch this film only because of the cast like Jackie Shroff, Ashutosh Rana, and Prakash Raj. On many occasions, you enjoy watching Jackie Shroff more than Aditya. Writing and Direction: Writers Raj Saluja and Niket Pandey failed to present the film properly The story of this film is so complicated that till the audience tries to understand the plot, a new twist comes. At the same time, director Kapil Verma also missed to present it properly. Most of his focus was on portraying Om as a superhero and not a human being, and this makes it difficult to believe many scenes in the film. Whether Om is fighting with ten people alone or he catches the chain of the helicopter and knocks it down. The film is full of action and there is no shortage of special effects but some scenes have become very pale. Music: Sir Dard Deta Hai The background score of the film is given by Amandeep Singh Jolly which is excessively loud. In many action scenes, it gives you a headache. On the other hand, the music of the songs is slightly better, which is given by Arko and Chirantan Bhatt. The film has only 4 songs in the name of songs, out of which 3 are romantic and one dance number. Why watch and why not watch If you are fond of Aditya Roy Kapur, Jackie Shroff, and action films, then you can watch them once. If the family likes to watch action movies, then you can also watch with them. If you are fond of art films and keep your mind while watching the film, then do not go.

NVIDIA's new Shield update can stop late-night movies waking up the entire house

NVIDIA has rolled out Experience Upgrade v9.1 for all Shield TV and TV Pro units, and one of the features it brings will make watching action movies without earphones more feasible for night owls. The new Night Listening mode can optimize sounds when it's switched on so that loud explosions are subdued while quiet dialogue gets emphasized even while the volume is on low. Enjoy watching movies or playing games at night without disturbing your family, the company said in its announcement . To note, the new model is available while using HDMI audio only. In addition to Night Listening, the latest update also enables Shield TVs to automatically switch to low latency game mode on all supported television and display models. So long as a display has Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), the streaming media device will be able to ensure that it's activated while a user is playing, whether it's a local game or something from the GeForce NOW cloud gaming service. By reducing latency, ALLM reduces lag and allows a smoother, more responsive gaming experience. Upgrade 9.1 comes with a few more features that include the ability to disable displaying HDR/Dolby Vision content and to get notifications when the microphone is turned on. Shield TV's previous update brought Android 11 to all models and added access to a new Google Keyboard with support for voice searches. It also fixed a a vulnerability that allowed remote attackers to cause a permanent denial of service. While 9.1 doesn't come with a big security fix, it does include a bunch of bug fixes for both Shield TV app and devices.

From big dog Johnson to 'big grope' Chris Pincher: another day in Westminsters normal workplace

Of course the PM and his allies backed their disgraced deputy chief whip. Just two scandals? That hardly registers these days Because nothing is too on-the-nose for the current Conservative party, the intro of Chris Pinchers latest drinking column featured Uncle Monty from Withnail and I . That lubricious booby, Pincher called Monty, in an article for the Critic magazine filed some time before he appeared to admit drunkenly groping two younger men on Wednesday night. I wonder what Uncle Chris was saying as he chased them round the Carlton Club? I mean to have you, even if it must be burglary! In reality, the dialogue is likely to have been less iconic than any of that movies quotable quotes. The last time Pincher resigned for alleged sexual misconduct of course there was a last time he was accused of luring a former Olympic rower back to his home before reappearing in a bathrobe, massaging his victims neck and untucking his shirt, while whispering: Youll go far in the Conservative party. Just call him Harvey Winetime. Marina Hyde is a Guardian columnist Continue reading...

Thinking the unthinkable: is Hollywood really going to make a sequel to ET?

Comments this week from Henry Thomas, who played Elliott in the 1982 hit, indicated that ET, wherever he is, just might be getting a call Lord of the Rings is unfilmable; nobody will ever better Sean Connery in the role of James Bond; Top Gun will never get a sequel a lot of unshakable Hollywood totems of received thinking have been rudely toppled by the march of time. Could ET be next on the list of movies that you never expected would get a sequel but does? Its still unlikely, honestly. But you know the money men in Hollywood have got one eye on Top Gun: Mavericks current $1bn global box office gross . Given the original Top Gun, in 1986, managed less than half the greenbacks pulled in by Steven Spielbergs junior sci-fi bromance in 1982, one can only imagine that a well put together followup might even challenge for the highest-grossing movie of all time mantle (currently held by Avatar with a staggering $2.847m). iOS 16, M2 MacBook Air, and everything else coming from Apple in July

June was a huge month for Apple, with lots of announcements and new products stemming from WWDC . We got new developer betas of this falls operating system updates and our first look at the M2 processor in the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro . July will build on that excitement with the first public betas of iOS 16, macOS Ventura, and all the rest, along with the M2s real showcase: the new MacBook Air . Heres whats were expecting Apple to deliver in July 2022. M2 MacBook Air The only significant hardware release we expect from Apple in July is the new MacBook Air . But what a release it should be! The new M2 processor at the heart might be the least exciting improvement. Theres an all-new design that ditches the wedge shape but is still as thin and light as ever, new Midnight and Starlight colors, a bigger display with thinner bezels and a notch, much-improved 1080p webcam, new speakers and mics, and MagSafe charging. The new MacBook Air starts at $1,199, and Apple hasnt given an exact release date yet, only saying it will come in July. We suspect that demand will quickly outstrip supply, so be ready to preorder right away if you want one. The new MacBook Air is thinner than the previous model but ditches the wedge design. Apple Apps and software updates When Apple introduced its fall OS updates at WWDC in June, it said we could expect Developer betas immediately, followed by public betas in July. As June comes to a close we still dont have a specific release date yet, but we expect it to arrive during the week of July 11 the third developer beta followed shortly by the first public betas, which should be essentially identical builds. iOS 16: iOS 16 brings some really great new features , and youll get a chance to try it out in July. Heres how to join the iOS beta . iPadOS 16: iPadOS 16 for the most part mirrors the updates of iOS, but the new Stage Manager feature (exclusive to M1 iPads) is a pretty big deal. watchOS 9: watchOS 9 brings enhancements to sleep tracking, fitness features, and watch faces. tvOS 16: While tvOS 16 doesnt bring a lot in the way of new features, it will still be updated this fall to keep in line with Apples other OSes. macOS 13 Ventura: Highlights of macOS 13 include Continuity Camera, Weather and Clock apps, Stage Manager, and lots of app updates. Heres how to get the macOS Ventura beta . In addition to the iOS 16 betas, those who are not interested in testing advanced versions of Apples operating systems are also likely to get a release in July. iOS 15.6 , iPadOS 15.6, tvOS 15.6, watchOS 8.7, and macOS 12.5 have had several beta releases and are likely very close to final public release. These releases contain mostly just bug fixes and security updates. Services Apple TV+ Here are the shows, series, and movies we expect to release on Apple TV+ in July. iOS 16 Messages Guide: Undo Send, Edit, and Other New Features

With iOS 16 , Apple is adding some major updates to the Messages app, introducing features that many people have been wanting for years. This guide highlights everything that's new with the Messages app in iOS 16, iPadOS 16 , and also, macOS Ventura as many Messages features are cross-platform. iMessage Editing When you send an iMessage in iOS 16, you can edit for up to 15 minutes after it is sent. To edit an iMessage, you just long press on the message that you want to fix, add your edit, and then press the blue checkmark to resend. There are some caveats to be aware of when using this feature. It only works with iMessages, not SMS messages, so both people need to have an iPhone for it to work effectively. Edited messages will be repeated for those who are not running iOS 16. Using the message editing feature as it is intended requires participants to be using Apple's latest updates, including iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9 . People who are running an earlier operating system or those on Android will see text that says Edited to [text] when receiving an edited iMessage. The Messages app does not provide a history of the iMessage that is edited, so the person on the other end will not know what the change was. iMessage Undo Send If you send an iMessage and then change your mind, you can use the undo send feature to retract it. You can unsend an iMessage for up to 15 minutes after sending it. As with iMessage editing, iMessage unsending has limitations that you need to be aware of. If you use the undo send feature on a message sent to someone running an earlier version of iOS, it will not work and the message will not be unsent. In this situation, the person on the other end will not see that you unsent it, even though it will disappear from your iPhone. If someone is running an earlier version of iOS, it will say the following: You unsent a message. [Person] may still be able to see your message on devices running older versions of iOS. For undo send to work, participants need to be running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9 on their devices. iMessage is required, as the feature does not work on SMS messages. Mark as Unread There is a new mark as unread feature in iOS 16, which allows you to mark an SMS message or iMessage as new, so it has the blue dot to remind you to return to it. Mark as unread is useful if you get a message and don't have time to read it or address it in the moment because it keeps it as a new message with a notification badge on the Messages app. To mark a thread as unread, long press on the conversation and then tap on the Mark as Unread option. Recover Deleted Messages Under the Filters interface in the Messages app, there is a new Recently Deleted section that aggregates all of the texts that you've deleted. If you accidentally delete a message that you did not mean to delete, you can recover it here. This interface has dedicated Delete All and Recover All options for dealing with all of the messages at once, or you can select an individual message and opt to delete it or recover it. SharePlay Support SharePlay, the feature that is designed to let you use apps, watch TV, listen to music, and more with friends and family over FaceTime , has expanded to the Messages app. In any app that supports SharePlay, you can opt to start a SharePlay session with the Messages app. The participants in the SharePlay experience can see the same content, discussing it through iMessage. This is handy for collaborating on various apps, playing games, working out, talking about TV shows and movies, and nearly every other SharePlay interaction. SharePlay is now compatible with both Messages and FaceTime, so you can pick which method of communication you prefer. Collaboration Integration Collaboration is a new feature built into iOS apps. You can work together with colleagues, friends, or family in Files, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Notes, Reminders, and Safari, sending an invite to collaborate through Messages. When a Collaboration has begun, all invited participants will see Messages updates when the shared project in the app is edited. Collaborations can be initiated from Messages or FaceTime. Junk Message Reporting Apple is expanding the built-in Report Junk feature in the Messages app to cover SMS/MMS messages, allowing spam messages to be reported to select carriers in the United States. If you long press on an SMS/MMS message in the Unknown Senders section of the Messages app in iOS 16, you can select the Report Junk option. Using this option lets you report a message as junk, sending it to Apple and Verizon and deleting the message. The Report Junk feature was previously available for iMessage, but the option to report SMS/MMS messages to both Apple and carriers is new. Developer APIs Apple is making the Shared with You API available to developers, so they can build a dedicated Shared with You section into their apps, which will aggregate app content that you've been sent from friends into that app. So, for example, if a friend sends a Zillow listing, you might be able to see it in a new Shared with You section in the Zillow app. This is opt-in for third-party apps, and it is an expansion of the Shared with You function that Apple introduced in iOS 15 . Shared with You takes Safari links, photos, music, and more, and makes them accessible in the relevant app so you don't miss content from friends. Apple also has a Messages Collaboration API to allow third-party apps to take advantage of the new Collaboration feature that allows users to communicate in the Messages app while working together in another app. Guide Feedback Have questions about the iOS 16 Messages app, know of a feature we left out, or want to offer feedback on this guide? iPhone (2007) review: A game-changer years in the making

At a Glance Experts Rating Pros Built-in iPod functionality Bright high-resolution screen Elegant touchscreen interface Impressive e-mail, Web, and phone features Beautiful hardware Wi-Fi networking Cons Only supports slower EDGE cellular data network Text-messaging tool supports SMS but not iChat No support for text selection, cut, copy, and paste Inline headphone jack incompatible with many third-party headphones Browser cant display Flash content No support for stereo Bluetooth headphones Limited Bluetooth support Update 6/29/22: 15 years ago, Apple began selling the original iPhone in stores. Heres a look at our original review of the device as it appeared in the September 2007 edition of Macworld magazine . Apples iPhone is a product thats been years in the making. Apples designers have been working on it for years, and the Web has been buzzing about Apples entry into the phone market for just as longor maybe even longer. But now, after six months of intense speculation since its introduction at Macworld Expo , the iPhone has arrived. Although the iPhone is not without a few quirks, it makes good on the hype that surrounded it. Hefting the hardware Steve Jobs proudly described the iPod as a beautiful piece of hardware that had amazing software inside it. And with the iPhone, Apples hardware designers have once again wrapped the output of the companys in-house developers into a remarkable piece of hardware. Pictures of the iPhone dont do it justice: its smaller than it looks. Roughly the width (2.4 inches) and height (4.5 inches) of a full-size iPod, depth is the dimension that makes the iPhone feel tiny: its shockingly thin, measuring less than half an inch. However, the iPhone doesnt feel fragile. Its got enough weight (4.8 ounces) to it to feel substantial when its in the palm of your hand. Andthe iPhone appears to be built to last, with a screen that proved quite resistant to scratches and drops. The iPhones back side is a textured silver, rather than the polished stainless steel of the full-sized iPod models, so my guess is that both the front and back of the iPhone will be more resistant to scratches than either the full-sized iPod or the original iPod nano. This is not to say that the iPhone is impervious to being marked up. Perhaps we were unwise to order pizza at Macworld on the day of the iPhones arrival, but the grease from that pizza helped make a point: the iPhones screen collects fingerprints. The good news is, the screens so bright that in most situations you dont notice the fingerprints. But its enough of an issue that Apple includes a small black chamois cloth in the iPhone box, and the image-conscious iPhone owner will want to give their screen a good wipe-down often. The dominant physical feature of the iPhone is its black glass face, punctuated by a single physical button on the bottom and a speaker slit near the top for listening to phone calls. But the Home button isnt the only physical button to be found anywhere on the iPhone; on its side are a pair of volume buttons, which (depending on context) will let you raise or lower the volume of the phones ringer, music or video playback, or conference-call speakerphone. Placed right above these two buttons is a switch that slides back and forth; in one position the iPhone will emit sound from its external speaker, while in the other it will only vibrate to warn you that somethings going on. Using a switch instead of a toggle button was an excellent choice, since you can feel the switchs position even in a darkened movie theater. However, the volume buttons are located a bit too close to the switch, and on several occasions I found myself pushing the switch (which wont budge) in a vain attempt to boost the iPhones volume. The iPhones top has a physical button, too. It serves as a wake/sleep toggle button: press it and the iPhone goes to sleep and locks instantaneously. (This feature is aimed at preventing you from accidentally pushing an on-screen button; you can still receive incoming calls when the phones in this state.) Press that same button and hold for a few seconds, and the iPhone will shut down completely. Opposite the wake/sleep toggle on the iPhones top edge is a recessed headphone jack. Its a standard 3.5-millimeter jackthe very same sort used on the iPodbut because its recessed many third-party headphones wont fit, especially if theyve got a large plug or one that turns at a 90-degree angle. Its too bad that a clunky add-on accessory will be necessary for aficionados of high-quality headphones to use the iPod features of the iPhone. (Although if the iPhone is a success, headphone manufacturers will almost certainly build their plugs to ensure iPhone compatibility.) The iPhone comes with a set of stereo earbuds that sound pretty good, exponentially better than the earbuds that shipped with the original iPod. These earbuds also include an inline microphone thats also a clicker: click once to pause or play your music, or click twice to advance to the next track. Although Im sure that third-party headphone makers will create numerous excellent alternatives, the good news is that the iPhones in-the-box earbuds are very good. On the iPhones back face is the tiny lens of its compact, two-megapixel camera. It doesnt zoom and doesnt work well in low light, but with still subjects in well-lit areas it produces nice results. Its definitely more appropriate for fun shots when no other camera is around than as a replacement for your digital camera, even if your camera is five years old. (The camera also cant record video, at least not with the current version of the iPhones software.) The iPhones inside may not be as beautiful as the outside, but its full featured. Each iPhone contains either 4GB or 8GB of flash data storage. Its also got three different wireless technologies inside: a standard GSM cellular connection with support for AT&Ts EDGE network, support for 802.11b/g Wi-Fi networks, and Bluetooth. Bright, clear display The iPhones display is excellent. Yes, its big and bright, but its most impressive trait is its high resolution: Its 160 dpi, more than twice the traditional Mac screen resolution. Jamming that many pixels together in such a small space means that everything on screen looks smooth, not pixelated. Digital photos and videos look gorgeous, and even the colorful icons on the iPhones home screen are so bright and clear that sometimes its hard to believe that youre looking at a computer screen and not something physical, like a sticker. On-screen text looks sharp, more like printed text in a book or magazine than drawn with pixels on the screen. Of course, the iPhones screen isnt just for looking at: Its the key driver in the devices interface. Using the iPhone is a tactile experienceits all about touching your fingers (or, if youre daring, your thumbs) to that screen. Instead of dragging a scroll bar or clicking a mouse, you move through screens on the iPhone by a combination of taps, flicks, and other finger gestures. The original Macintosh changed the world by providing a physical control to move a cursor around on a computer interface. But the iPhone does it one betterinstead of pushing around a mouse in order to make a disembodied arrow or hand move up on the computer screen, its your finger doing all the moving. When you touch a photo, Web page, or email message on the iPhone and slide with your finger, it moves along with your touch, as if you were moving a real, physical object. Theres no cursor on the iPhone because your finger is your pointerwhich, despite what your mother might have told you, is just what fingers are designed to do. This review originaly appeared in the September 2007 edition of Macworld. IDG Fingertips on virtual keys If pointing is a natural act, typing on a keyboard (especially a tiny one) is its antithesis, but its a necessity of our modern age. After the crash-and-burn of the Newtons handwriting-recognition interface and even Palms original Graffiti writing system, the makers of most mobile devices settled on tiny, chiclet-style keyboards as the best way for people to input text. The iPhones designers seem to agree that typing is the best way to enter data on a small device, but theyve ditched the physical keyboard and replaced it with more touchscreen space. When youre using the iPhone and reach a point where you need to input text, a keyboard automatically slides up from the bottom of the screen. The abolition of a physical keyboard is probably destined to be the iPhones most controversial feature, at least at first. Theres a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using the iPhones keyboard, especially for people who are comfortable using the physical keyboard on a Blackberry, Treo, or other smart phone. I cant say that my typing experience with my previous phone, a Palm Treo, was particularly good. I could manage, but never felt that I could reach an acceptable typing speed. As a result, its hard for me to put myself in the place of an accomplished Blackberry thumb typist who has spent a year honing his or her skills. But I believe that most userseven thumb typists, given an open mind and some training timewill find the iPhones keyboard to be excellent. It does take some getting used to, however. Thats because the iPhones keyboard is a failure if taken literally. If you slowly tap every single letter and painstakingly backspace if you press the wrong one, you will never be satisfied. The iPhones keyboard excels when you ignore your mistakes and keep on typing, because it senses your finger presses, compares all the nearby keys to its built-in dictionary, and intuits what youre actually trying to type. Over time, as it learns the kinds of words you type, it improves its auto-correcting accuracy. Within a few hours with the iPhone, my finger was flying over the keyboard, and Im sure my fingertip was only getting roughly close to the correct letter most of the time. But the iPhones software, with remarkable consistency, knew what I had meant to type. I assume that with some practice, two-thumb typing would be even faster, but with my index finger I managed to type faster than I ever have on a tiny device, physical keyboard or not. The iPhones key layout is smart, too: it changes what keys appear depending on context. For example, in Safaris URL window, youll be presented with a .com key. In an email window, youll only be provided with characters that can be part of a valid email address. One inconsistency is the presence of a horizontal keyboard when the iPhone is in a landscape orientation: it shows up in Safari, but it would be nice if you could rotate other applications, such as Mail, in order to take advantage of a larger keyboard. One iPhone text oddity is that the device has no concept of a text selection, let alone copy, cut, or paste. You might think that touching your finger and dragging it across text might select it, but it doesntApple uses that gesture to bring up a magnifying glass so that you can correctly reposition the insertion point (which is a great idea). Without copy and paste, you cant (for example) compose a blog entry in the notepad while in Airplane mode and then paste it into your blog-posting tool in Safari when youre back on the ground. Yes, you can email that note, and if your blog tool has an email-to-blog gateway, thatll do in a pinch, but the lack of a better way to transfer text from one place to another can generally hamper interaction between different iPhone programs. iPhone calling Its easy to get lost in the hype about touchscreens and Web browsers and forget that the iPhone is, like its name says, a phone. And it works pretty well as one: When an incoming call arrives, the iPhone gently interrupts what youre doing to display Caller ID information about whos calling. You can set any of 25 built-in ringtones as your ring and assign custom ringtones to individual callers. Unfortunately, you cant use your own music or sounds as ringtones. Once a call is in progress, the iPhones large screen gives Apple room to make it clear what your options are while on the phone, including placing people on hold and creating conference calls. The iPhone uses iTunes to sync the contents of your Macs address book (or a set of groups within the address book) with its internal contacts list. Although I was initially resistant to the idea of syncing over all my contacts rather than just a group containing the people I was most likely to call, in the end, syncing everything is probably the best approach, since your contacts are also used for email addressing. Fortunately, the iPhone remembers which contact group you were looking at most recently. So even though my iPhone contains all 207 of the contact records Ive got on my Mac, when I tap Contacts I see only the contents of a Phone group that I created within the Macs Address Book. (If the person I need to call isnt in there, I can tap on a back arrow and browse the entire contacts list or a different contact group.) In fact, the stickiness of your current contact group is just one example of an effect youll find throughout the iPhones interface: When you return to a task you were previously using, things will generally be just as you left it. For example, if youre looking at a Mail message and then press the Home button to check stock quotes, when you tap on Mail again youll be back to that same message. The iPhones Phone application is a five-tabbed interface that lets you quickly get to a numeric keypad for old school dialing (especially useful if youre trapped in a phone tree), see your contacts, and get a list of recent calls. Theres a Favorites list, too, so you can create a short list of your most commonly dialed numbers. However, creating and accessing favorite people should be easier than it is right now. To add a contact as a favorite, you have to tap on the name in your Contacts list, then scroll down to the bottom of the contact record and tap Add to Favorites, thenif they have more than one numberpick the one youd like to add as a favorite. Theres got to be an easier way, like tapping on a name and dragging it onto the Favorites icon. The iPhone also lacks a quick-dial feature that youll find on many other phones, in which you hold down a particular button to call your most frequently-called contacts. Obviously the iPhone cant map contacts to buttons it doesnt have, but top contacts are probably a few too may taps away. When youre on a call, tapping the screen brings up six commandsMute, Keypad, Speaker, Hold, Contacts, and Add call. That last command is particularly noteworthy, as its an example of the kind of task that can be confounding on other smart phones while being drop-dead simple on Apples handset. Whether youve initiated or received a call its an easy matter to put one caller on hold while you contact another and then bring the three (or more) of you together in a conference call. If only our phones here in the office worked as intuitively. One of the iPhones most unique phone-related features is Visual Voicemail, which displays messages by showing you the name of the caller and the time of the call; messages that you have not listened to yet are marked with a blue dot. Tap on any message and that message will be played back, regardless of its position in the message queue. While listening to a message, a progress bar shows the length of the message and current playback position, letting you jump back and forth with the drag of a fingerno more listening to entire messages over again just to hear that phone number you missed the first time. Theres also a large green Call Back button to return the persons call (assuming the caller didnt have Caller ID blocked) and a large red Delete button. Its a fresh approach to voicemail, and a welcome change from the kludgy menu-driven Voicemail systems with which most mobile-phone users are all too familiar. One of the most useful interface touches on the iPhone is the method you use to scroll through a massive list of information: a strip with every letter from A to Z which runs vertically down the right side of your contacts list (as well as most lists in the phones iPod functions). Touch the strip with your finger in the general direction of the first letter of the contact name, song, or artist that youre looking for, and the list will jump to that letter. If you want to use a Bluetooth wireless headset with the iPhone, you should be able to do so without much trouble. I easily paired the iPhone with a Plantronics headset, and my colleagues have had success with headsets from Apple and Aliph. However, the iPhone doesnt currently support stereo headphones, nor can it pair with your Mac for such tasks as passing files, using the iPhone as a modem, or passing call information to your Mac. The original iPhone introduced the iconic Slide to Unlock feature. IDG One-handed email The explosion of interest in smartphones is because theyre a mixture of two great tastes that taste great togethercell phones and email. And the iPhones Mail program is excellent, capable of displaying formatted email messages, including many common attachment file types. The Mail interface is a simple hierarchical list that lets you tap through to different accounts (if youve got more than one account, as I do). If youre using IMAP, youll see a list of all the mailboxes that are a part of your account. Once youre in a mailbox, you can see a list of messages, complete with the name of the person who sent it, the messages subject, and, optionally, the first few lines of the message. Using Mail on the iPhone couldnt be much easier: tap the New Message icon to create a new message, and then choose a recipient from your Contacts list (or type in an address yourself). If youre reading a message, pressing the reply button will give you the option of replying to or forwarding the message. Its no fun entering in email settings on a computer with a full keyboard, let alone on an iPhones virtual keyboard. So Apple has tried to make email set-up on the iPhone easy, and it has largely succeeded, albeit with a few caveats. When you first set up your iPhone, iTunes transfers all your mail account preferences from your Macs copy of Apple Mail. If those accounts are the only ones you want, youre set. But if you need to enter in account info yourself, Apple has created several account presets that work for some major account types: Yahoo, Googles Gmail, AOL, and Apples own .Mac. Setting up those services was very easy and required a minimum of data entry. If youre not using any of those services, however, youll have to enter in a bit more data. And youll probably discover one of the iPhones major interface mistakes: theres no option to display the text of the passwords youre entering. Thats a fine security measure, but when youre typing on the iPhones teensy virtual keys, and most likely not typing any sort of character string that the iPhone is good at auto-correctingat least not if youve got a decently secure passwordits very difficult to carefully enter in your password and make sure youve done it properly. I managed it by pressing my finger down on the keyboard and, if the letter that popped up wasnt the one I wanted, deliberately sliding my finger until the proper key registered, then picked up my finger. But for long or numerous passwords its a big pain, and something Apple should fix. If youve never used a mobile device for email before, youll also discover that you may need to change some of your mail settings (or change servers) to get the best email experience on the iPhone. After entering all the data for my offices mail server, I was confounded by an error when sending mail. At first I thought that I had entered my password incorrectly (hence the repeated visits to the password entry screen), but it turned out that my mail server wasnt listening for outgoing mail messages at the same location (SMTP port, for you mail geeks out there) as the iPhone wanted to use by default. After some research I discovered what SMTP port we were using, and appended it (preceded by a colon, of course) to the name of my mail server in my mail settings. It worked, but it was the kind of difficulty that will drive most people to tech support. Moreover, the iPhone doesnt filter mail, nor does it have any built-in spam catcher. That means if youre relying on a client-side filtering program such as C-Command Softwares SpamSieve , youll be stunned at the amount of spam youll see on your iPhone. The solution: Use a mail server with server-side spam filtering, if you can. If your server also offers other server-side filters, it might be an opportunity to redirect some mail you dont want to get on your phone, such as messages from mailing lists, elsewhere. iPhone Mail has a few other idiosyncrasies that I hope will be addressed in the future. By default every reply you send quotes the entire message youre replying to, with your response at the top. This didnt bother me, but that style of mail drives some people crazy. And since theres no way to select a mass of text and delete it, theres really no way to get around the default reply style. Theres also no way to select all of your mail at once and delete those messages or mark them as read. Its not a show-stopper, but it is annoying. Another, much more minor, missing feature is the ability to assign signatures for each of your email accounts. You can have a signature (by default its Sent from my iPhone), but that signature is applied to every message you send, regardless of account. Big Web, little window At numerous public appearances, Steve Jobs has promoted the Web-browsing experience on the iPhone as one that brings you the real Internetin other words, the experience of viewing the Web via a full-fledged computer browser, not dumbed-down pages simplified for mobile phones (or, whats worse, complicated Web pages that a puny cell phone browser cant properly render). By embedding a version of Safari on the phone, Apple has brought the iPhone most of the way toward that goal, but it still falls a few notable steps short. When youre using Safari on the iPhone, you feel as if youre using Safari on your Mac. Web pages load in full, scaled-down to fit on the iPhones screen. Tap twice on any part of the page and Safari automatically zooms in, making text readable and enlarging photos to fill the screen. The experience is as close an approximation to the Web you experience on your Mac as you could possibly get on a screen the size of the iPhones. Web-page text is a pleasure to read on the iPhones high-resolution display. Your bookmarks even come along for the ride, because iTunes syncs bookmarks between your Mac copy of Safari and your iPhone. (Its a two-way sync, so dont delete bookmarks on the iPhone unless youre willing to lose them on your Mac too.) If the iPhone is a success, the iPhone Web story will improve, too: Web developers can custom-build style sheets to work with the iPhone, as well as make some basic additions to their pages to improve the iPhone browsing experience. Loading Web pages on a Wi-Fi network felt about as snappy as it did on my Mac, but when I switched over to AT&Ts EDGE digital cellular network, things bogged down. I found browsing the Web on the EDGE network less pleasurable, but still quite usable (though its worth noting speed of the network can vary widely). Safari on the iPhone even has a clever way to support multiple open Web pages at once: tap the Window button and the current page pulls back to reveal that its one in a chain of up to eight different pages. If you click a link thats set to open in a new window, Safari handles the process itself, zooming you out of your current page and sliding you over to the new page. However, there are a few limitations that prevent Safari on iPhone from truly showing the real Internet. The biggest is the fact that perhaps the most common browser plug-in in existence, Adobes Flash, is nowhere to be found. Over the past few years, the melange of different browser plug-ins for features such as embedded Web videos have largely been replaced by a single video player format: Flash. Although the iPhones included YouTube player solves the problem for that popular video-sharing Web site, it doesnt address the larger fact that numerous Web sites use Flash to play video or display other interactive content. The iPhone also wont play back Web audio or video being streamed in the Real or Windows Media formats, although Mac users can play such media on their Macs. Less major though still annoying, is the lack of support for file upload via Web pages. It would be nice if Safari allowed users to upload certain kinds of content in order to, for example, post pictures taken with the iPhones built-in camera to the Flickr photo-sharing site. (An alternative would be for Apple to add support for photo-sharing-site uploads right into the iPhones Photos program.) iPod reborn The iPhones iPod functions are like no iPod weve seen beforebut Id hazard a guess that they closely resemble the look of iPods to come. Without a scroll wheel to use in navigation, the iPhones iPod features take some getting used to. It took me quite a while to figure out how to toggle into and out of Shuffle mode. (The controls appear when you do a single tap on the screen.) When held in a vertical, or portrait, orientation, the iPhones iPod menus are reminiscent of the old iPod, but with much more detail. Instead of a main menu, theres a row of five buttons along the bottom of the screen. You can customize four of them with elements you might remember from the iPods main menu (including Artists, Genres, Videos, and Podcasts). The fifth, called More, is the home for all the options that didnt make it onto the row of buttons. When youre in a listof artists, for exampleyou can scroll through it by flicking your finger, or use the same vertical A-to-Z quick index feature thats present in the Phones Contacts list (assuming youve got a long enough list of artists or songs). Tapping on an Artist brings up a list of albums or, if they have only one album, a list of songs from that album. Conveniently, you can now choose to begin shuffling at almost any point: all songs, all songs by a particular artist, or all songs in a particular album. When the iPhones in a landscape orientation, the iPod interface switches into Cover Flow mode, in which you flick through a row of album covers. Find a cover that looks intriguing, and tap on it to see its contents. It looks great, but Im still not convinced about how useful Cover Flow is as a featureon the iPhone or anywhere else. Due to its large, high-resolution screen, the iPhone excels as a video player. Its the largest canvas a video iPod has ever had, at 480-by-320 pixels. (The current video iPods display resolution is 320 by 240.) And the widescreen aspect ratio, while not quite a Hollywood-standard 16:9, is still better for watching widescreen movies and TV shows than the 4:3 ratio of the video iPod. Of course, the iPhone doesnt have a large hard drive on which to store a massive video library. That means you have to be judicious with the amount of content you load on the iPhone. And if you convert your own videos (from DVDs or other sources), youll want to spend the extra time compressing and resizing them to fit on the iPhone. But I was able to load up my 8GB iPhone with 350 songs and eight hours of video, and still have 3GB left over. So while loading an entire season of a TV show onto an iPhone is basically impossible, theres certainly enough room (especially in the larger model) for a nice selection of viewing options. And in a nice touch, the iPhone offers to delete videos off its flash drive after youve viewed them, to free up more space. There are also several things the iPhone doesnt do that the iPod does. It wont output video to a TV, for one, and its iTunes synchronization process is much more like Apple TV than an iPod. I often drag-and-drop music and video onto my iPod when I attach it to my Mac, but the iPhone will only sync with a library or playlist on a specific Mac or PC. If you want to drag-and-drop, youll need to do it into a playlist that youve set to sync with the iPhone. Theres also no support for embedded lyrics in music files, and no voice-recorder support, either with the iPhones internal microphone or with various iPod voice-recorder add-ons. And theres more Its easy to focus on the iPhones four core programs, but there are 12 other icons on that Home screen. A few of them are full-blown applications, while others are nothing more than simple Dashboard-style widgets. The Text program, which has been built to resemble iChat, works quite well as a messaging tool for the cellular networks SMS text-message protocol. I was able to send messages directly to other phones, status updates to Twitter.com via its SMS gateway, and even chat with someone who was using iChat via AOLs SMS gateway. Thats the good news. The bad news is that Text cant send MMS messages, which are similar to SMS messages but can contain multimedia. Because of this limitation, you cant send a picture you snap with the iPhones camera to another phone via Text. (You could send that photo via email.) Whats worse, the iPhone has no support for any Internet-based instant-messaging network. AOLs SMS gateway works okay in a pinchand when your buddies are initiating the chatsbut its no replacement for a full-blown AIM buddy list. And if youre in a location where youve got Wi-Fi network access but no cellular service, theres no fallback. The iPhone is dying for a full-blown instant messaging program, and Text doesnt fit the bill. Although I dont have any inside information, I assume the choice of SMS support over instant-messaging support has something to do with the fact that AT&T makes money on SMS message plans. But SMS simply isnt a replacement for instant messaging, and Apple should make the addition of a chat program a priority for a future iPhone software update. The Calendar and Notes programs help the iPhone fulfill its role as a personal information manager, but theyre like night and day when it comes to their utility. Calendar is implemented beautifully, with a useful Day view and a mega-useful List view of all upcoming events. You can add and edit events and sync them back to iCal on your Mac. Calendars big limitation is that it doesnt color-code differences between different synced calendars, and new events cant be assigned to particular synced calendarsthey all automatically get assigned to a single, default calendar. And neither Calendar nor any other iPhone program will let you display or edit your iCal to-do lists. In contrast, the Notes program is fairly useless. Its cute, with its brow header and yellow legal-style ruled background. But notes dont sync back to your Mac, so you have to email them from your phone if you ever want to free them from the iPhone. And not to get too font-nerdy on you, but the Marker Felt font used in Notes is extremely ugly and, sadly, cant be changed. (Heres hoping that when Leopard arrives, with its system-wide support for notes, youll be able to sync iPhone and Mac notes.) If theres ever been an example of Apples software-design prowess, its the Maps program on the iPhone. Maps is powered by the same data you get when you visit Google Maps with your Web browser, but its interface is so slickfrom the ease of finding addresses in your contacts list to the whizzy turn-by-turn direction animationsthat it not only puts the Google Maps implementations on other cell phones to shame, it makes the Google Maps Web site itself look dowdy. The only thing missing from the Maps equation is that the iPhone doesnt know where it is. Not via built-in GPS (it has none), nor by triangulating signal strengths from nearby cellular phone towers. Its too bad, because with some knowledge of where its currently located, the iPhones Maps program would be perfect. A trio of iPhone iconsCalculator, Stocks, and Weatherwill be familiar to anyone who has used their Mac OS X Dashboard Widget equivalents. Theyre harmless, attractive, and functional. They also point out how, before too long, the iPhones Home screen will need some sort of management tool. Not just because Apple will no doubt add to the 16 icons currently on the screenbut because some people will want to hide icons that they dont use. For example, I wouldnt mind if I never saw the Stocks icon ever again. Im sure someone else feels the same way about Weather. And who knows? Perhaps those who hate math might want to kill Calculator. The Clock program, on the other hand, is more than just a pretty face. Yes, it lets you see what time it is in major metropolises such as London, Moscow, and Cupertino. But it also lets you add multiple alarms (unfortunately only using ringtones, not the contents of your iTunes library), set a stopwatch, or initiate a countdown timer. The least exciting, but most useful, of the iPhones 16 Home screen icons is Settings. This is where everything behind the scenes on the iPhone happens. The preferences for the iPhone in general, and individual programs in particular, are all located here. From Settings, you can send the iPhone into Airplane Mode (which turns off all its radios, including cellular, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi), connect to a Wi-Fi network, and even connect to a corporate VPN (Virtual Private Networking) server. I was able to connect to my offices VPN a few times, although I was unsuccessful on some occasions. And I ran into an annoying bug: despite the fact that I asked iPhone to remember my VPN password, it insisted on asking me for it every time I tried to log in. Power on The iPhone tech specs claim battery life of up to eight hours of talk time, six hours of Internet use, seven hours of video playback, 24 hours of audio playback, and 250 hours of standby time. Apple arrived at these figures under testing conditions that may not necessarily reflect your own use. Macworld is running battery tests of our own, and well post the findings once we have them. But Macworld staff have been impressed with the anecdotal results weve seen so far, given the number of tasks you can throw at the iPhoneoften at once. The AT&T factor Unlike other Apple products, the iPhone is the result of a partnership between Apple and AT&T, the company thats exclusively providing the cellular network for the iPhone. iPhone owners must be AT&T customers, and commit to being AT&T customers for two years . The result is that its fairly hard to judge AT&T aspects of the iPhone. While Ive been an AT&T customer (and before that Cingular, and before thatoh, the ironyAT&T) for years and have been relatively happy with the service, Ive also heard from many people who hate AT&Ts cellular service. Add to that the fact that every cell phone user tends to use their phone in a different set of areas, each with their own particular coverage characteristics, and that makes it difficult to give any cellular carrier a broad judgment. What might be great service for one person might be horrendous for another. In addition, Im aware of numerous complaints from iPhone buyersincluding at least one on the Macworld staff about long, drawn-out issues with activating their phones. Still others have complained about poor customer service on the part of Apple and AT&T during the products first days of existence. Without downplaying those issues, its worth noting that neither Apple nor AT&T has ever released a product like this before, and its not surprising that both companies are still figuring out how to handle the attendant customer-support issues. If youre changing from a different carrier and are skittish about AT&T handling the changeover, you might want to wait a few weeks until the initial surge of iPhone sales drop off and both companies have learned some valuable lessons about how to handle iPhone activations. If youre not sure AT&T is the right carrier for you, despite your interest in the iPhone, my advice is even more amorphous: Find someone who uses AT&T and who uses their phone in the same places you do, more or less. See how their experience is. Or ask a friend to borrow their AT&T phone for a couple of hours and take it to the places you tend to use yours, so you can see for yourself. Macworlds buying advice In both hardware and software, the iPhone is a truly new creation. In the technology industry, we tend to call these 1.0 products, and many savvy consumers choose to wait until a second version arrives, presumably with the original versions bugs worked out. The iPhone certainly has room to grow, and theres no doubt that future versions will build on the impressive list of features in this initial product. But let there be no doubt: this first iPhone is an impressively polished product, with none of the haphazardness that weve come to associate with anything 1.0. Among its liabilities are some features that ideally would be addressed via software updates, including adding instant-messaging support, some method of selecting text and moving it between programs, a faster quick-dial feature, Flash support in Safari, and improvements to the Notes program including the ability to sync it with the Mac. Other weaknesses, like its lack of support for faster cellular networks and absence of GPS capabilities, will have to wait for a new version of the iPhones hardware. But the iPhones positives vastly outweigh its negatives. Its a beautiful piece of hardware with a gorgeous high-resolution screen and a carefully designed, beautiful interface inside. The iPhones touchscreen keyboard will end up pleasing all but the most resistant Blackberry thumb-typers, making it an excellent device for email. Its Safari browser cleverly condenses full-blown Web pages into a format thats readable on a small screen. Its iPod features make it a versatile audio player and a drop-dead gorgeous video player. And, yes, it does pretty well at making phone calls, too. To put it more simply: The iPhone is the real deal. Its a product that has already changed the way people look at the devices they carry in their pockets and purses. After only a few days with mine, the prospect of carrying a cellphone with me wherever I go no longer fills me with begrudging acceptance, but actual excitement. iOS, iPhone

From access to seating, Kerala film theatres are hardly disabled-friendly

A discussion on disabled-friendly theatres came up after Paresh Palicha, a movie critic with cerebral palsy, wrote about his experience with a Kochi cinema house. Cris Lakshmi Priya Paresh Palicha at EVM Cinema, Fort Kochi From the time he was little, Paresh Palicha, a familiar face among the movie circles of Kerala, used to be carried up to the movie theatres he went to watch films at. At first it was his Papa, lifting the boy with cerebral palsy through the steps and stairs of the theatres in Kochi. Later, his friends and family members too joined in taking Paresh up flights of stairs of film houses, as he grew up into an active movie critic, visiting theatres every week or so. But even after film theatres underwent multiple renovations and announced themselves state-of-the-art, Paresh was dejected to find that only a few were disabled-friendly. Despite laws in place, few cinema houses in Kerala have the facilities to make the space accessible for the disabled. It is not only in Kerala, most theatres across the country are not disabled-friendly. But the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (RPD) Act, 2016, says that all places used by the public in general including private spaces used by the public should be accessible to all. That includes places of entertainment, banks, parks, theatres etc, says Muralidharan, general secretary, National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD). It is in the last decade that most film theatres across the state began renovations, turning themselves into multiplexes. Some of them added ramps and elevators. The SL Theatres in Thiruvananthapuram, which had four different screens, reopened with six screens in 2015 as AriesPlex Cinemas. It has a ramp and a lift that allows people in wheelchairs to traverse. Some theatre complexes have ramps on the ground floor, but have no elevators or ways to access the upper floors. Ramps and elevators are available at Aries Plex, Thiruvananthapuram Gireesh, owner of the 50-year-old Sri Padmanabha Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, says that the halls in the ground floor are wheelchair-friendly, but not in the balcony. There is space to park the wheelchair, he says. We also have a make-shift ramp that can be placed at the front of the theatre if anyone asks for it. Unfortunately, there is no way to access the second floor for a person with physical disability, without the help of others. It is difficult for old theatres, with old fashioned structures, to create provision for it. However, we will definitely consider it for future renovations, says Gireesh. Paresh, who visited theatres in Thiruvananthapuram during the last International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), as a member of the jury which selected World Cinema, wrote positively about the volunteers who helped him move between movie halls. However, back in his hometown of Kochi, he was disappointed to find that the Shenoys Theatre, which he had frequented since his childhood, did not make itself disabled-friendly despite a recent revamp. A renovated Shenoys now has five screens, but no ramps, lifts or wheelchair-accessible seats. I had posted a query on their Facebook page when they reopened after renovations in February 2021, asking if it was wheelchair friendly. They all know me very well since I have been going there since I was a child, my papa lifting me up and carrying me. The Shenoys is the biggest theatre I have seen in my life and I have been around many going to theatres in Mumbai and Bengaluru. But when I posted my query, they said it was not wheelchair friendly. The excuse they gave is that they just did a little renovation and not much else. But how can you convert a single big screen theatre into one with five screens without breaking the interiors? It is full of steps and stairs everywhere, to every screen, Paresh says. I had posted this query in Shenoys Cinema page a few days back... I am still waiting for positive response from... Posted by Paresh Palicha onWednesday, 10 February 2021 Seema Lal, special educator and activist working among people with disability, took up Pareshs cause with the authorities. We thought lets go to the theatre and see if they have an alternate arrangement. They didnt, there are too many steps everywhere. Most other theatres at least have a wheelchair-friendly entrance at the back, but there was nothing of the sort in Shenoys. We wrote to the Mayor and tagged the Social Justice Department. We also spoke to Suresh, the owner of the theatre. They said that permission was given by the Kochi corporation to renovate without having to include a ramp in the design. But we didnt want to close it down or anything, we are just saying lets have an open discussion and find a solution together, Seema says. When TNM contacted Suresh, he said that there was no special plan to include any disabled-friendly features. However, the staff of the theatre are always available for personal assistance, he added. If people with disabilities ask for help, our staff are there to help them to their seats and back. When we had a renovation at the theatre recently, ramps were not insisted (by the Kochi corporation). There are too many staircases, and building ramps for all of them are not feasible. We have no plans for an immediate renovation, we just had the last one a year ago, Suresh says. Renovated Shenoys Theatre in Kochi Albert, the manager in charge when TNM visited the theatre, says that when people with disabilities come to watch films, they are always given priority. Our staff will help them to their respective seats and cater to any other concern they might be facing, he says. Even the Padma Theatre, located just over 500 m away from Shenoys, does not fare much better in this regard. Padma too does not have ramps, escalators or other such facilities to cater to people with disabilities, and instead places the onus on the staff to help them. The nearby Sarita Savita Sangeeta theatre complex has a ramp and a llift but it too has its share of limitations, as audiences with bodily disabilities are, here too, dependent upon the employees to help them enter the cinema hall. However, discussions are underway to make the complex disabled-friendly, says Sethunath, manager of the complex. We frequently get visitors with disabilities here, he says, pointing to a tricycle for a person with disability parked in front of the Savita theatre. We already have ramps and lifts in place. But we did receive the notice from the Cochin Corporation regarding making the cinema more accessible, and we are currently discussing how to go about it, he adds. The ramp to Sarita Theatre in Kochi The Mayor had been forthcoming when Seema reached out, she says. However, nothing has panned out yet. Muralidharan, who accompanied Seema for the meeting, says that it is a violation of law if theatres are not following the provisions of the RPD Act. Those who have complaints may approach the state disability commissioner. There are special courts too, set up for the purpose of addressing grievances of persons with disabilities in every state, he adds. Paresh is of course not alone in his fight. People with disabilities have been facing these problems at all public places. His plight in theatres is just more impactful since it affects his profession as a movie reviewer. In June, a group of mothers of children with disabilities, decided to take their wards to a movie theatre in Thrissur to give them the experience of watching a film on a big screen. Jasmine Anwar posted a photo and wrote about the childrens day out. Several of us mothers wonder, will it be a problem if we go with our children to the movies. That is because some of the children make sounds and some of them cannot sit still and we worry if it will disturb the others in the theatre. But these children also want to watch films, right? So we tried our luck one day, and made it happen, Jasmine writes in her post. She adds however that though the theatre staff helped the children in and out of the place, it was sad to see that the theatres were not accessible for the disabled. Unni Maxx, an activist bound to a wheelchair, says even if theatres are equipped with disabled-friendly features like ramps, easy access to seats inside is not guaranteed. It is hardly there in any of the theatres in Kerala. I went to the Aashirvad Cinemas in Thodupuzha (of Idukki), excited by the ramps and the wheelchair-friendly toilets. But you can at best reach up to the front of the screen on your own. To access any seat in the rows behind, you will need someones help as there will be steps. The staff will have to lift you up from there. It is the same story in most movie houses, except some malls like Lulu in Kochi, where you can enter through the back of the hall, Unni says. Suraj, duty manager at Lulus PVR, says that the entire last row of all nine auditoriums in the complex is wheelchair accessible. If they want to use any of the seats in other rows, the staff will help them. The toilets are also easily accessible, he says. Disability-friendly seats should be there inside theatres, and access for persons with disabilities in and out of the movie house should also be available, says Vijayakumar, president of the Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala. New theatres are coming up with these facilities, and the old ones which are getting renovated should have it. Those are the laws, he says. Meet Kerala sibling filmmakers Rahman Brothers who are living the indie dream

Interview Directors Rahman Brothers are behind Vasanthi and Chavittu, two films which have won state awards in consecutive years. Cris Sajas and Shinos Rahman Uphill a bylane in Thiruvananthapuram, in a little hall called Lenin Balavadi, there is a surprisingly good number of people to watch a couple of parallel films on a Sunday afternoon. A little past 5, one of the films,Vasanthi, has just been screened, and among the folks scampering in and out of the hall are its two filmmakers, actor and organisers of the film show. The filmmakers are two men brothers Shinos and Sajas, known together as theRahmanBrothers, from Aluva. The brothers, along with Swasika who played their Vasanthi and the organisers of the Banner Film Festival, screening the films, interact with an emotional audience, who, unlike in a regular movie house, come forward to say what touched them the most. No one in the audience seems to be new to the kind of cinema Banner has been promoting independent and experimental features that often dont find space in a film theatre. The Rahman brothers, seated in front of the viewers, introduce themselves like newcomers, even though they are three films old. The second screening that evening Chavittu is their newest, a film which won four state awards this year. Award winning appears to have become a habit for these siblings, who decided to combine their skills to make films they believed in. I come from an editing background and have worked with editors in mainstream cinema for 10 to 12 years. My brother Sajas went to the school of drama to learn direction and later worked with light design in theatre. After years of doing our respective jobs, we decided to come together to make films, inspired by the kind of cinema we began watching as children, in film societies of Aluva, says Shinos, the elder of the two. Still from Chavittu He spoke to TNM on a Wednesday, three days after the Thiruvananthapuram screening. The brothers have in the meantime rushed to Palakkad with their films for another screening. They seem happy with small gatherings of people who enjoy and appreciate the work they do. We grew up watching films screened by film societies, and in libraries. At one time, we had a vibrant parallel stream in Malayalam cinema, from a small set of filmmakers like Aravindan, Pavithran, Backer, John Abraham, Shaji N Karun and Adoor Gopalakrishnan. When we began making films, we didnt want them to be merely entertaining. We didnt, to put it differently, want a product but something through which we could personally express ourselves and enjoy a freedom in that process. This way we're not dependent on how much money the film makes but are happy making it and showing it to a bunch of people who appreciate it, Shinos says. Chavittu, they know, is not everyones cup of tea. There is a huge presence of theatre within the film, years of work by Sajas finding its way into the making. In the film, a theatre group a real life one called Little Earth, based in Kalavara of Koottanad in Palakkad has reached a venue of celebration, a gathering of a Residents Association. All through the film, you watch the theatre group rehearse not inside the hall, but in various indoor and outdoor settings where they take their story to. You find yourself tapping your feet as the team dances to Njangade paatu poyaal, njangal paadiyedukum if our song is lost, we will sing and get it back. Arun Lal, who plays himself, is the real life choreographer in Little Theatre, who won the State Award for best choreography for Chavittu. They are a well-known regional group and they are our protagonists. All performing artists face the problem presented in the film, Shinos says. He is talking about the indifference shown to art forms like theatre, fine arts and all parallel expressions. Even if you remain detached, unable to connect to the intricacies of the art form in the film, you end up broken-hearted, the reality striking you pretty hard. It could be you, the people who make a show of inviting such artists, make large promises, and disrespect them like a proper philistine. Before Chavittu began screening, the organiser of the show, Biju, remarked casually It is a chavittu to many literally, a kick on your face. Still from Chavittu The film in fact says whats happening to itself to films such as Chavittu suffering without a space. Shinos says that if it werent for the awards or the film societies, their films might still be in their hard-disk, unseen. Vasanthi, the previous year, too won a bunch of awards from the State. Swasika, a regular in television serials and playing supporting characters in movies, was thrilled to be Vasanthi, a woman who stages a play on a beach, slipping away to her life in between and quietly returning to the stage later. Theatre again became a cinematic tool in the hands of the Rahman brothers. Theatre, Shinos clarifies, has not been adopted as a permanent tool of storytelling in their films. Their first feature Kalippattakkaran did not have it. In the future, their films may or may not employ it. All they know is they do not want to succumb to a form they dont believe in, by making films that entertain an audience, make them feel one with the protagonist. Theyd rather remind the audience, hey, this is a performance, in the Brechtian way. The term is a reference to German playwright Bertolt Brechtian who used alienation as a technique to distance the audience from the performance. Some of my female friends said that we could not get deep into the mind of Vasanthi. But then as men, there would be a limit to how deep we can go. Instead we delved deep into the men in Vasanthis story, Shinos says. Siju Wilson and Shabareesh Varma, too mainstream actors, played important roles in the film. Watch: A sequence from Vasanthi One man in the audience wanted to know why, despite the presence of these popular actors, the film did not have a theatrical release. Shinos spread his hands out and said the only truthful answer he didnt know. I ask what challenges they faced in putting a woman into the thick of things and telling her story in such an unorthodox fashion. Shinos says it was not the real struggle since Swasika was a trained and lovely actor. That part went well. The real struggle, he says, was the finance. Its easy to say go out and make zero budget movies, but a few lakh rupees would still be spent. And they had to make more movies. Shinos and Sajas are now hoping for an OTT release of their movies, with the government announcing a platform of its own, which is expected to go live later this year. Until then we will work on our next film, Shinos says. Watch: Agnipath protests are a sign of India's unemployment crisis

Tollywood film workers end strike after producers agree to consider wage hike

Protest For a second consecutive day on June 23, thousands of film workers in Hyderabad had stayed away from work demanding better wages. IANS Telugu film workers protesting for wage hike The Telugu Film Industry Employees Federation on Thursday, June 23, announced that the film workers have called off their indefinite strike and will be resuming work from Friday. The Federation announced that a coordination committee headed by film producer Dil Raju will consider the demand of the workers for wage revision and make a decision. The committee is expected to decide the quantum of hike on Friday. The breakthrough came after the Federation and Film Producers' Council held talks with the protesting workers. For a second consecutive day on Thursday, thousands of film workers in Tollywood stayed away from work demanding better wages, bringing film production to a halt. Shooting and other production-related works of at least 25 films in Hyderabad were affected due to the strike by 20,000 workers. Telugu Film Chamber earlier insisted that it will discuss the wage issues with the workers if they return to work. The issue reached state Minister for Cinematography Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Thursday. He advised both sides to sort out the issue amicably through talks. Representatives of the Telugu Film Industry Employees Federation and Film Producers' Council called on the minister separately to brief him on their problems. While the Federation leaders told the minister the workers' demand for a 45% hike in wage is justified, the producers conveyed to him that this would impose a burden on them at a time when they were yet to fully recover from the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. The workers' unions, comprising 24 crafts of cinema, had called for an indefinite strike to press for their demand. The workers said they had long been demanding revision in wages in view of the increasing cost of fuel, all essential commodities and school fees. They said they extended all cooperation to the filmmakers by not pressing for their demand as the film producers were hit hard by COVID-19. The union leaders said they were forced to launch the protest as no steps were taken to meet their demand though they had been discussing the issues with the Telugu Film Chamber for the last six months. They said the film industry has recovered from the impact of COVID-19 and has produced some big hits including pan-India movies, and therefore the Film Chamber should take the initiative and address their long-pending demand. The protest had affected the production of many films, including Chiranjeevi's Bhola Shankar, Prabhas' Salaar and Ram Charans RC 15.

Apple TV+, the streaming service from Apple, arrived at the end of 2019 so its been here a while now, but its only recently come into its own as more and more people have discovered the shows on offer. Shows including Ted Lasso and For All Mankind , as well as movies like Greyhound , staring Tom Hanks. You can even watch a couple MLB games every Friday night . Apple TV+ costs $4.99/4.99 a month, which is less than other streaming services. Head to this Apple page for more details. How to claim your free trial of Apple TV+ from Apple Having made a qualifying purchase, or decided to try out the free 7-day trial, all you need to do is: Make sure the device is running the latest software. Open the TV app on your new Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Sign in to your Apple ID. Click on the show you want to watchyou should see the option to Enjoy Three Months Free . Note: This will only appear if you have purchased a new device, otherwise you will only see the 7-day trial offer. Click Continue . Confirm that you want to activate the free trial. You will see a message that the free trial will commence immediately and will run until the end of the trial at which point it will renew for a monthly subscription. If you want to cancel the subscription you can do so. You have 90 days from buying a new device to start the free years subscription, so as long as you purchased your new Apple product recently then you should be ok to activate your trial. Also, if you stop the free trial before it ends you cant restart it. What if you are thinking of buying a new Apple device later? Will you be able to switch from a subscription to the free trial? We think that the way to do this would be to cancel your subscription before signing up again via the three-month trial. Share an Apple TV+ subscription with your family You can also share a subscription to TV+ with six family membersyourself and five others. To do this you all need to be part of the same Family Sharing group. By linking your Apple accounts together under the Family Sharing group you will all be able to: Share music purchased from the iTunes Store Share access to Apple Music (as long as you have a family Apple Music subscription) Share apps bought from the App Store (in app purchases cant be shared though) Share Apple Books Access games on Apples Arcade gaming platform (with a subscription) Share a News+ subscription Share an iCloud storage plan One of your family members will need to be the family organiser, who basically chooses who joins the group, and has to put up their bank details to pay for any purchases. Its supposed to be family members in the same household. While you could set this up with other family members we think the frustration of having all the payments for everything going through the organisers bank account could make this a hard sell. However, if does at least mean that you and your partner dont both have to subscribe to the service in order to watch shows on both of your iPhones. How to cancel an Apple TV+ subscription So thats a few ways to get Apple TV+ for free, at least for a short time, or by sharing a subscription with a family member. However, we think the best way to get access to Apple TV+ is to subscribe as usual but just cancel at any time. You could watch everything you want this month and then stop subscribing next month and it would only cost you 4.99/$4.99. Sign up for Apple TV+ here. To cancel your Apple TV+ subscription follow these steps: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on the Apple ID section at the top with your name. Tap on Subscriptions . Now tap on any subscription you wish to cancel (in this case Apple TV+). On the next page tap on Cancel Subscription . Apple, Apple TV

Arunachalam to Kadhalukku Mariyadhai: 1997 witnessed many huge hits in Tamil cinema

Flix Flashback Suryavamsam, Minsara Kanavu, Bharathi Kannamma, Kaalemellam Kadhal Vaazhga were some of the other successful movies while there were lesser hits such as Iruvar, Ullasam, Nerukku Ner and Pistha. Nandhu Sundaram YouTube screenshot There was a time in the pre-Netflix era and even before multiplexes when our affair at the movies was a totally different experience. If we rewind to exactly 25 years ago, we are transported to a time when private Tamil television (Sun TV) was only five years old and standalone theatres were still mostly the only place where we courted the stars. As it turns out, 1997 was a distinctive and extraordinary year for Tamil cinema. There was no shortage of critically acclaimed movies or blockbusters. A high was guaranteed practically every time you went to the theatre. Back then, before the age of social media, the movie-watching experience was so pure and so highly anticipated that satisfaction was always on the cards. The year was known for successful movies like Suryavamsam, a monster hit at the BO, and Minsara Kanavu, a rage among the youth. These movies are so readily imitated now that we know that they continue to capture the hearts of newer generations. Minsara Kanavus songs by a yet-to-mature AR Rahman blared out from every speaker in town and caught the imagination of feverish young ones everywhere. Prabhu Deva, Arvind Swami and Kajol (debuting in Tamil) were suddenly stars everyone knew and appreciated. Though he was to never direct another movie for years, Rajiv Menons work in this movie came in for high praise. Kamal Haasan, taking a brief sabbatical from Tamil cinema, produced, co-wrote and directed, for the first time, a Hindi movie called Chachi 420, a remake of the Tamil hit Avvai Shanmughi. His main rival for the affections of the Tamil people, superstar Rajinikanth, released Arunachalam, in which director C Sundar proved once again that he had a flair for comedy. Coming on the heels of Baasha and Muthu, Arunachalam (featuring a monkey prominently in the climax) was underwhelming to many, but it was still a movie that defined 1997 in the annals of Tamil cinema history. There were other movies too. Director Fazil, better known for his body of work in Malayalam cinema, remade Aniyathipravu as Kadhalukku Mariyadhai with Vijay and Shalini in the lead. With a superb score by Ilaiyaraaja, who was on his comeback trail despite an admirable resistance from the resilient Rahman, the movie was a hit all across Tamil Nadu (in A, B and C centres as they were called back then). The story was quite conservative, where the lead couple, in spite of their mutual attraction, decide not to marry due to opposition from their families. The said families eventually reconcile and get the lovers married, bringing the movie to a surprise ending. The song Ennai Thalatta Varuvalo, a melody with a thumping heart imagined the way only the maestro can, was on everyones lips at the time. 1997 also saw the debut of director Cheran with his well-regarded Bharathi Kannamma starring Parthibhan and Meena. The title of the film might be better known as a television series these days, but back in those days it was seen as a sentimental mash of a film. This film with its rural milieu heralded the arrival of Cheran as the new Bharathiraaja. Audiences too flocked to the movie, especially in the smaller towns and villages, where it struck a deep chord with the people. Kaalemellam Kadhal Vaazhga, a love story between a singer (Murali) and a music enthusiast (Kausalya), was a little gem of a film that did really well at the box-office. Oru Mani Adithal, composed by Deva, became an anthem for the year. Another gem was Arasiyal, starring Mammootty. Directed by RK Selvamani, the film released to decent box-office returns. Porkaalam, Cherans second movie of the year, was released to critical acclaim and BO success. Starring Murali, Meena, Sanghavi and Vadivelu, the film was a tear-jerker, most famous for some memorable shots of pottery scattered all through the film. Both Arasiyal and Porkaalam took home Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Film, along with Arunachalam. For this critic, the best film of the year was the awe-inspiring Iruvar, directed by Mani Ratnam. Based on the lives of Tamil Nadu politicians MGR, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa, the film had an ensemble cast including Mohan Lal, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Rai (making her rip-roaring debut in a dual role), Tabu, Gautami and Revathi. With memorable cinematography by Santosh Sivan, the film released to critical acclaim but poor BO receipts. Mohanlal plays Anandan, a struggling actor, who strikes up a lasting friendship with Tamizhselvan (Prakash Raj), an upcoming writer and Dravidian ideologue. With the passage of time, their comradeship, however, sours as the two get increasingly entangled in a fight for political power in Tamil Nadu. With a convincing production design by Samir Chanda, the film was a period piece that captured the political bonhomie and, later, the rivalry between MGR and Kalaignar. It was Ratnams best work up until that point. The score by Rahman broke new ground with influences from Carnatic music and even jazz. The hot, pulsing beat of Ayirathil Naan Oruvan worked like a shot of steroids and lifted your spirits every time you listened to it. Hello, Mr Ethirkatchi has graduated from a radio favourite to a YouTube rage. Suresh Urss work on the editing table was accomplished with much finesse. Santosh Sivan and Prakash Raj picked up National Awards. Ullasam, produced by Amitabh Bachchan, starred Ajith and Vikram in the lead roles, with Maheswari playing their love interest. The film, directed by the JD-Jerry duo, failed to interest anyone at the box-office despite Karthik Rajas soaring music. Nerukku Ner, in which Suriya makes an awkward debut, fared better at the BO. Technically, this was the first movie that Simran signed in Tamil, though she had other movie releases ahead of this one. Composer Deva, who dominated the 1990s in many ways, put together a great score for this movie. Vijay and Kausalya put in adequate performances. Vasanth directed this movie with panache. Actor Karthik, whose career was sputtering to an end as a bankable male star, made Pistha (directed by KS Ravikumar) with Nagma as the female lead. The movie delivered a strong dose of male chauvinism along with dollops of laugh-aloud humour. The combination worked wonders at the BO and the movie was a bona fide success. Ratchagan had a couple of great songs, including KJ Yesudass soulful rendition of Nenje Nenje (one of Rahmans underrated gems). Despite the sizzling chemistry between its lead pair played by Nagarjuna and Sushmita Sen, the movie, directed by debutant Praveen Gandhi and produced by KT Kunjumon, flopped miserably. There were some minor hits too, but we dont recognise their names any more. Take movies like Aaha and Love Today that did reasonably well at the box-office. These movies have not transcended time by any measure. If you are in your teens right now, you cannot be expected to know these movies intimately. It was also a tough year for the Tamil film industry due to the strike by the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI). A small problem at the shooting spot of the film Raman Abdullah (director: Balu Mahendra) spiralled into a major issue, causing a disruption in the schedules of many major movies, including Jeans and Kadhal Rojave. The Tamil Film Producers Council soon entered into a heated dispute with FEFSI that was resolved only after Chief Minister M Karunanidhi intervened. It is easy to see that 1997 was really an action-packed year for Tamil cinema. Some movies even the hits from that year have become outdated. Others that had seemed to break fresh ground then, now look positively old-fashioned. But there are films like Iruvar and the light-hearted Minsara Kanavu that are so precious that they deserve to be treasured. We will do well to remember them. We will do even better to re-watch some of them. Nandhu Sundaram lives in Medavakkam, a Chennai suburb, with his wife and 10-year-old daughter. He loves the city deeply and wants to change it everywhere he goes. He loves movies (all kinds), books and cricket. He is also trying his hand at short stories.

Thousands of Tollywood film workers protest for wage hike, movie production affected

Protest Film shooting in and around Hyderabad was affected on June 22 as more than 20,000 Telugu film workers launched a protest demanding a hike in wages, which has been pending for more than three years due to the pandemic. IANS Telugu film workers protest demanding wage hike in Hyderabad Film shooting in and around Hyderabad was affected on Wednesday, June 22, as more than 20,000 Telugu film workers began a protest demanding a hike in wages. Many cine workers laid siege to the office of the Telugu Film Industry Employees Federation in Jubilee Hills to demand a 45% increase in wages. Police stopped the protesters, who raised slogans in support of their demand. The Federation president and general secretary assured the workers that a solution will be found after talks with the Film Producers' Council. The workers' unions, comprising 24 crafts of cinema, have called for an indefinite strike. However, there was no clarity on whether the workers were staying away from work indefinitely. The protesters left the Federation office after an assurance by the leaders that they will ensure a 30% hike but it was immediately not clear if they would resume work. The workers said they had long been demanding revision in wages in view of the increasing cost of fuel and all essential commodities. They said since the film industry has recovered from the impact of COVID-19 and has produced some big hits including pan-India movies, the Film Chamber should take the initiative and address their long-pending demand. They expressed disappointment over the lack of coordination between the Telugu Film Chamber, Telugu Film Producers Council and Film Industry Employees Federation. The protest affected the production of about 20 films, including Chiranjeevi's Bhola Shankar, Prabhas' Salaar and Ram Charans RC 15. Responding to the strike, Telangana Minister for Cinematography Talasani Srinivas Yadav said, The excuse of COVID-19 has been given for about three-and-half years. Its true that there are difficulties, but this issue must be resolved immediately. When asked if the government would intervene in resolving the issue, the Minister said that the matter of wages is usually negotiated between the workers and the Film Chamber, through mutual discussions. They (Film Chamber) had asked for a years time. Its been six months past that deadline. So the workers are demanding a hike immediately. I hope this is done soon, the Minister said.

Meet Negha S, winner of Kerala State film award for women and trans persons

Interview Negha won the Kerala state film award for her performance in the Malayalam film Antharam. Cris N-e-g-h-a. Negha spells out her name twice to make sure it does not come out wrong. People have been misspelling it at several places, she says, ever since she won a Kerala State Film Award this year. Negha S is from the south of Tamil Nadu, near Thanjavur, and has been living and working in Chennai for years. But her first award and the first notable role in a feature film has come from a Malayalam movie, Antharam. And for her performance in Antharam, she was announced the winner of a special award instituted by the Kerala government for films of women and transgender persons. Negha became the first trans woman to win the award. She was working as a mental health counsellor at an NGO in Chennai when she slipped into the world of showbiz. Director Balaji came to the NGO to conduct an audition for trans persons for a short film. I attended it and got cast in his film, Manam, Negha says in an interview to TNM. After that, a series of Tamil short films came her way, most of them to do with awareness about transgender communities. She also began modelling and anchoring television shows, while continuing her work at the NGO. Transgender people find it really hard to get accommodation. As an independent trans woman, I end up paying double the rent in places than whats paid by cisgender, straight people. So I need to earn a lot more, and make use of every work opportunity that comes my way. I also had to pay for my gender affirmation surgeries, Negha says. Negha in Antharam As she anchored for multiple channels television and youtube Negha wanted to be a voice of her community. There was a time when trans people were largely misrepresented in the media. I want to fight that, fight it for my community. Media is a platform where people can learn things. It will help the upcoming generations if we remove such misrepresentations and transphobia in the media, she says. She also points out that every time a cisgender person enacts the role of a transgender person in a film, a trans person loses work opportunity. There is so much inequality that we need to fight against and open the gates for the community. Now there are trans people in the police force, among engineering students and doctors and even judges, she says. Antharam, the Malayalam film that cast her in a lead role, had none of the misrepresentation she fought against, she says. The films director, P Abhijith, a photographer and documentary maker who has been working with LGBTQIA+ people, contacted Negha on social media through a mutual friend. It was a big role and I told him I didnt have the confidence, but he was sure about casting me. Still from Antharam The film tells the story of a trans woman, Anjali, who gets married to a cis man, from the points of view of three different people including Anjali. It has issues that most trans people go through. She can be from anywhere, Kerala or Tamil Nadu after running away from home, she doesnt have a place to call her own. But trans people need a home, a family, care, like everyone else. In the film, Abhijith shows what challenges come to a trans woman who begins a family. Kannan Nayar and Nakshatra Manoj play the two other lead characters in the film. On the day the award was announced for Negha, she received a call from Abhijith. But I could not believe it at first, I hadnt been aware that we even applied for the award. It is only when more members of the cast and crew called to congratulate me that the news sank in. By then she had already begun work for another feature film a Tamil film called The Road, in which she plays an important role alongside Trisha and Miya George. They have all been so nice about it, congratulating me, Negha says. For Negha, the work is never over. She is now part of another NGO, Trans Rights Now Collective, based in Chennai, working among Dalit, Bahujan, and Adivasi trans people, bringing awareness and attending to crises. She also posts on social media, to spread awareness against transphobia and misrepresentation of trans people in movies. anuja-chauhan-on-the-hate-zoya-akhtars-the-archies-is-getting

Slightly bemused with the amount of hate Zoya Akhtars teaser for the Netflix films, The Archies, has been getting. I found it, to use my daughters phrase, nice only. As in, so many meticulously styled, impossibly beautiful young things, bathed in vintage-y Instagram filterseach one placed into the aesthetic frames as carefully as a pastry chef places marzipan roses onto a three layered wedding cakeand going forth (presumably) to do the things kids did in the 1960sattend school, obsess over crushes, eat ice-cream, play music, go steady, picnic, and perhaps solve a crime. Whats not to like? Lots apparently. Comments range from they look too fake, too rich, too fair, too westernised, to they dont look like the Archies I read and loved, to I hate the Archies, they gave me an inferiority complex when I was a child, why cant some Indian comics Like Doga or Amar Chitra Katha be adapted instead, to Oh God, not that ancient poor-good-Betty verses rich-evil-Veronica trope again, to the inevitable rants against privilege and nepotism. Personally, I think that somebody at Netflix has been very savvy. Theyve managed to draw up a Venn diagram that includes almost every age-group and socio-economic category. All Zoya Akhtar fans, plus old folks around the world who read and loved the Archies growing up, plus old desis who are Amitabh Bachchan/Sridevi/Shah Rukh Khan fans and are curious to see how their next-gen turned out, plus young desi kids who follow these star-kids on social media, plus indie music fans who would love Gully Boy and Dots music, plus young kids around the globe whore drawn in by the slick, international styling of the show. Its really quite a coup. On top of that, theyve dodged all accusations of being trope-y and repetitive because theyre cleverly serving us old wine in an old bottle only. We cant complain that The Archies is a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai rip-off because um...Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was an Archies ripoff, complete with Anupam Kher as Mr Weatherbee. From Tina and Anjali warring over Rahul then, to Rajkumari Indumati and Chutki fighting over Chota Bheem even today, a bajillion Bettys and Veronicas compete for a bajillion Archies in our movies on a regular basis. The people objecting to the film are the people whove had absolutely no issues with biased content like The Kashmir Files or toxic fare like Kabir Singhor the about-to-be-released Prithviraj, which features Akshay Kumar, 54, playing a boy-king in his early twenties, romancing an actress who is 30 years his junior. Which honestly to me is far more problematic than Suhana Khan deciding to follow her (self-made) father into his profession. The most ironic bit is that The Archies is being trolledboth by the right-wingers and the woke youth brigadefor being fake and unrelatable. The film does not reflect the reality of India, and the kids in it are some kind of self-centered la-la-landers who arent concerned or affected by the problems that plague Indian society. To which I would say: 1.) Um, wait for the trailer maybe? 2.) Arent our political masters always telling protesting teenagers dont get side-lined by all this activism-shactivism and politics-wolitics! A dutiful, patriotic child is one who goes to school, keeps his head down and his nose clean. Which is exactly what the kids in the show are doing! Im in awe of their noses actuallyso chiseled and cleannot a blackhead or a visible pore in sight. Toh phir problem kya hai? editor@theweek.in
