AGARTALA: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has served a show cause notice to Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) asking it to make a written representation as to why the party shall not be delisted, a government release said. Former rebel-turned-politician Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl had floated the INPT way back in 2002 to unite the tribal political forces, but it (INPT) merged with Tipra Motha Party (TMP) in 2021. As per records of the Commission, the INPT party did not set up any candidates at the general elections to the House of the People and to the State Legislative Assembly of Tripura held in 2018 and 2023 respectively, as well as any bye-elections for the last two general elections. It is self-evident that the said party has ceased to function as a political party, said the show cause notice circulated by the Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA) department on Wednesday. The ECI proposes to withdraw the recognition of the party from the list of registered political parties. Before the Commission decides to proceed to withdraw the recognition of the party, it is proposed to give the party an opportunity of making representation/showing cause if any as to why the proposed action should not be taken, it said. Therefore, the INPT is called upon to make a written representation to the ECI in this regard, if it so desires. The representation, if any, should be duly accompanied by an affidavit from the president or the general secretary of the party with supporting documents on which the party proposes to rely upon and should reach latest by 21.08.2025, it said. The date of hearing for the party has been scheduled on August 28 at 3 pm in the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Tripura, Agartala, it said. NEW DELHI: Eighty-one airports operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have suffered a cumulative loss of Rs 10,852.9 crore in past 10 financial years. Today, 22 of these airports have become non-operational. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol presented the data in the Rajya Sabha on August 4 while replying to a query posed by Congress MP Jebi Mather Hisam. The MP wanted to know details of Indian airports operating at a loss and if there were any plans to shut those with negligible flight operations. She also wanted to know if any financial aid was being offered to underperforming airports. Data released for the years from 2015-2016 to 2024-2025 reveals the 81 airports across the country have cumulatively suffered a Rs 10,852.9-crore loss. Delhis Safdarjung airport has suffered the most, incurring a loss of Rs 673.91 crore. Agartala airport with a Rs 605.23-crore loss stands second, while Hyderabad, with Rs 564.97 crore, Dehradun with Rs 488.01 crore, and Vijayawada with Rs 483.69 crore in losses figure among the top five loss-making airport nationwide. Among other major loss-making airports are Bhopal (Rs 480.43 crore), Aurangabad (Rs 447.83 crore), Tirupati (Rs 363.71 crore), Khajuraho (Rs 355.53 crore), Imphal (Rs 355.19 crore). Mohol also said the Regional Connectivity Scheme Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN) was launched on October 21, 2016, to boost regional air connectivity from unserved and underserved airports in the country. The scheme provides Viability Gap Funding to airlines to bridge the gap between operational costs and expected revenues. The budget allocated for the RCS-UDAN for the financial year 2025-2026 is Rs 300 crore, the minister said. This provided financial incentives and concessions to the airlines from the Central and state governments, Union territories and airport operators to lower operational costs and thus promote their operations, he added. A total of 92 unserved and underserved airports, including 15 heliports and two water aerodromes have been operationalised under the scheme, he pointed out.
