Shah: Northeast police must shift focus to ensure speedy justice

Agartala: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the time has come for a change in approach of the police force with the end of insurgency in the northeast, in order to ensure that people get speedy justice. Shah, addressing the 72nd plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) here, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought peace in the region by inking 20 peace accords in 10 years, leading to the surrender of 9,000 armed militants. The police fought insurgency in the northeast for the past four decades. As insurgency has now ended, we need to change the approach of the force to ensure people get justice within three years of lodging FIRs, he said. The home minister also said connectivity is no longer a problem in the region, as the Centre has spent Rs 81,000 crore for rail connectivity and Rs 41,000 crore for road network in the northeastern states. Asserting that PM Modi expedited development activities in the northeast, Shah said Union ministers spent 700 nights in states of the region since the BJP-led NDA assumed power at the Centre. After the exchange of enclaves (land boundary agreements) with Bangladesh, the whole world will open for the northeast. This will change the investment ecosystem in the region, he said. The senior BJP leader also laid emphasis on the upliftment of people in rural areas by promoting vegetable cultivation, production of milk, eggs and meat. Only a hike in the GSDP (Gross State Domestic Product) is not enough for overall development. There is a need to attain self-sufficiency in vegetables, milk, eggs and meat, he said. Besides, the central government has been focusing on organic cultivation in the region, said Shah. The Centre has already constituted the National Organic Corporation Ltd to boost the sector. I urge all the CMs (in the northeast) to sign agreements with NOCL for packaging, marketing and exporting of organic products, he said. The home minister, however, said more efforts were needed to tackle narcotics smuggling in the region. Earlier in the day, Shah inaugurated the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) at Prajna Bhavan here. Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, along with governors, chief ministers of all the eight northeastern states, and senior officials, were also present at the event. The council is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the northeastern region, consisting of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

According to reports citing an official statement issued by Dhaka, the Bangladesh foreign secretary told Misri that the issue of border killings undermines the spirit of friendly relations between the two neighbours and immediate resolution of the issue would significantly contribute to building necessary trust and confidence among the people of Bangladesh. He also raised the issue of recent breach of the Bangladesh mission in Agartala. According to the cited statement, Jashimuddin wanted India to bring its visa services in Bangladesh back to normal. During his visit, the foreign secretary also called on the chief adviser of the interim government (equivalent to Prime Minister) Muhammad Yunus and the foreign adviser (foreign minister) Touhid Hossain. Reminding Bangladesh that both nations have a mutually beneficial engagement on a whole set of issues, ranging from trade, commerce, connectivity, power, water, and energy, and development cooperation, consular cooperation and cultural cooperation, Misri said there is no reason why this mutually beneficial cooperation should not continue to deliver in the interests of both our peoples. Later, Misri told the media that India expects, overall, a constructive approach on all these issues by the Bangladesh authorities, and we look forward to moving the relationship forward in a positive, forward-looking, and constructive direction. This visit is taking place amid bilateral tensions after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister in Dhaka four months ago, as the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammed Yunus is seen to be taking an anti-India stand and targeting Hindu organisations while looking the other way when religious fundamentalists are attacking Hindu temples and looting the properties of Hindus there. In a statement to the Bangladesh media after the talks, Misri said: I am here in Dhaka at the invitation of my Bangladesh colleague, Mohammad Jashimuddin, the foreign secretary of Bangladesh, for discussions and consultations on the entire gamut of issues Since the political changes in Bangladesh in August this year, there has of course been contact between our leaderships Todays discussions have given both of us the opportunity to take stock of our relations, and I appreciate the opportunity today to have had a frank, candid, and constructive exchange of views with all my interlocutors We have seen in the past, and we continue to see in the future, this relationship as a people-centric and people-oriented relationship, one that has the benefit of all the people as its central motivational force. He added: We had the opportunity to discuss certain recent developments and issues, and I conveyed our concerns, including those related to the safety and welfare of minorities. We also discussed some regrettable incidents of attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties We look forward to moving the relationship forward in a positive, forward-looking, and constructive direction. Meanwhile, Bangladeshs former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August this year after being deposed, launched yet another attack on the Yunus-led interim government in Dhaka and described it as fascist. Speaking at an overseas event in virtual mode, Hasina was quoted as saying: This darkness will end, and the fascist, murderous, conspiratorial Yunus government will learn a lesson from the people of Bangladesh. They are destroying our country, and they have created terror there. Please unite and remove this fascist government so that Bangladeshs future can be secure Now, who will you seek justice from? Anyone can enter your home and steal everything. They are filing false cases and releasing those who have killed people. Why did they loot the rooms of MPs and the Parliament building? They are looting the country. Why are they destroying the economy? Why are they doing this? Murderer Yunus and his advisers will have to answer for this. She added: They (Yunus-led government) have tortured and assaulted religious minorities in Bangladesh. They attacked religious sites as well, including temples and churches. Several Awami League leaders have been killed They have arrested Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu and have not allowed a lawyer for him Yunus designed the conspiracy against our government. He accepted hatching the conspiracy. He was the mastermind We accepted their demands, but still, Yunus did all this to rule Bangladesh I have not handed over the government, but it was occupied by the Yunus-led protesters. I fled the country as I never wanted to do politics on dead bodies.

Vikram Misri Lands in Dhaka for Bilateral Talks Amid Tensions Over Attacks on Hindus

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri landed in Dhaka on Monday to lead the Indian delegation at the next round of the India-Bangladesh Foreign Office Consultation (FOC). This high-level engagement marks the first such meeting since the political transition in Bangladesh in August. The last FOC was held in New Delhi in November 2023. Misri's visit comes amid growing concerns over violence against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly recent attacks on Hindu temples. During his trip, the Indian Foreign Secretary is expected to meet with his counterpart and participate in multiple discussions on matters of mutual concern, including bilateral trade and security issues. The visit is also significant as it is the first major diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh after the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus. Misri is set to meet with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Advisor, Md Touhid Hossain, to discuss ways to restore ties to a completely normal state, according to Hossain's statements. Concerns about rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh have been growing, with reports of attacks on Hindu communities. On December 6, the Mahabhagya Lakshminarayan Mandir in Dhor village, near Dhaka, was allegedly set on fire by unknown assailants. Temple supervisor Babul Ghosh reported that the attackers poured petrol on the idols, but fled when he approached. He suggested the attackers may have had ulterior motives beyond the destruction of the idols. The ongoing unrest includes the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who remains in detention on sedition charges. His arrest followed accusations that he and others disrespected the national flag during a Hindu community rally. The Bangladesh Ministry of External Affairs is under pressure to ensure that Dass legal rights are respected and that his trial is fair. India has emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic dialogue to address these tensions while continuing to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations. Breach at Bangladesh mission in Agartala: Hindu Sangharsh Samiti a banner, not an organisation

GUWAHATI: The Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, allegedly involved in the recent vandalism at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, is a banner rather than an organisation, according to a senior Tripura police officer. Requesting anonymity, the officer told this newspaper on Thursday that no organisation under this name is registered in the BJP-ruled state. Hindu Sangharsh Samiti is a banner and not an organisation. I heard its name for the first time. Before this incident, no protest was ever staged under its banner in Tripura. No organisation is registered by such a name here, the officer said. This banner was used by the protestors in the context of the incidents in Bangladesh, he added. A leader of a right-wing organisation, who participated in the protest, echoed the police officers claim. People from various walks of life, including Buddhists and ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) members, had gathered that day. We had to stage the protest under some name, so we used the banner of Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, he said. Seven held, action taken against four cops after breach of premises at Bangla mission in Tripura According to him, the protest was being staged peacefully until some individuals, who were not part of the assembled group, entered the Bangladesh mission, followed by police personnel. Nobody had any idea that they would pull down the Bangladesh flag, he said. The police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the breach of the mission premises. They were granted bail by a local court. Meanwhile, three police sub-inspectors were suspended, and a deputy superintendent of police was closed for alleged negligence of duty. Following the incident, the Agartala Bangladesh mission suspended all consular services until further notice. The anti-Bangladesh sentiment is still very strong in Tripura. Protests are being staged here and there every single day, said the right-wing leader. Earlier this week, the All Tripura Hotels and Restaurants Owners Association temporarily decided not to provide services to Bangladeshi nationals in protest against atrocities against Hindus in the neighbouring country. ILS Hospital, a multi-speciality private hospital in Agartala, also announced it would not treat Bangladeshi patients. The protestors are also requesting a ban on midnight premiere shows, citing concerns about law and order.

Sukhbir Singh Badal Attacked by Alleged Khalistani Activist at Golden Temple

Sukhbir Singh Badal, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), was attacked by an alleged Khalistani activist, Narayan Singh Chaura, at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the entrance of the revered Sikh shrine while Badal and other SAD leaders were performing 'seva' as part of a religious punishment for past actions. The assailant fired a bullet within the temple grounds during the religious ceremony on December 2. However, authorities swiftly apprehended him, and no one was injured in the incident. Amritsar police clarified that adequate security was in place, and Sukhbir Singh Badal was well-protected during the service. Deputy Commissioner of Police Harpal Singh confirmed that Chaura had also visited the temple the previous day and had paid respects to the Guru before the attack. Sukhbir Singh Badal's penance came after the Sikh clergy imposed a 'tankhah' (religious punishment) on him and other SAD leaders for alleged wrongdoings during the partys tenure from 2007 to 2017. On Tuesday, Badal, despite having a fractured leg, participated in the religious duties as a 'sewadar' at the Golden Temple, wearing traditional blue attire and using a wheelchair. Alongside him, other leaders, including Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, also carried out their penance. The punishment, which was announced by the Akal Takht, followed Badals acknowledgment of his mistakes, including pardoning Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a 2007 blasphemy case. The Akal Takht had declared him 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) earlier this year. Several other Akali leaders, such as Sucha Singh Langah, Hira Singh Gabria, and Balwinder Singh Bhundar, were also directed to perform similar penances. These included cleaning washrooms and utensils at the Golden Temple, as well as listening to religious 'kirtan'. The penance was a response to the grievances related to the governance of Punjab under the SAD from 2007 to 2017.
