25 wagons of freight train derail on KottavalasaKirandul railway section in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR: Train services were affected on the KottavalasaKirandul (KK) railway section under Waltair division of East Coast Railway (ECoR) after 25 wagons of a freight train derailed while passing through a tunnel on Wednesday afternoon. Railway sources said the iron-ore laden freight train en-route from Koraput to Visakhapatnam went off the tracks near Chimidipalli in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, possibly due to some issues with the tracks. Although no casualties have been reported, the derailment severely disrupted movement of trains on the route, which is predominantly a freight line used for transportation of minerals and industrial goods. Some passenger trains that pass through the route between Visakhapatnam and Kirandul have been diverted via Vizianagaram and Rayagada. An emergency response team rushed to the site to assess the situation and restore the tracks. Since the derailment took place inside a tunnel and the section falls under a hilly terrain, sources said, restoration work is expected to take several hours. Intermittent rain in the region under the influence of a low pressure area may further delay removal of wagons and the restoration process. Confirming the derailment, ECoR in a statement said 25 wagons of a goods train derailed near Chimidipalli at 1.05 pm in the ArakuKottavalasa section under Waltair division. A relief train has been promptly dispatched to undertake restoration operations. Senior railway officials are present at the site to assess the situation and monitor the restoration work. Resources mobilisation are on in full swing to ensure swift restoration, it said. Earlier, three wagons of a goods train had derailed near Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district on January 20. Similarly, four wagons of a goods train had derailed near Kantabanji station under Sambalpur railway division under ECoR on June 1, last year.
AP High Court raps police for intervening in civil dispute cases
VIJAYAWADA: In a significant ruling, the High Court has sharply criticised police interference in civil disputes, particularly those related to land issues, stating that they have no authority to intervene in such matters. The HC clarified that civil disputes between individuals should be resolved through civil courts under the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC) or through statutory bodies like the State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, and Mandal Legal Services Authority. The court emphasised that police attempts to resolve civil disputes under initiatives like the Pre-Litigation Counselling Forum (PLCF) create confusion among parties and may escalate conflicts. The HC explicitly directed Visakhapatnam police to refrain from interfering in civil cases under any pretext. In a related case, 74-year-old S Shyamala from Visakhapatnams Bay Colony approached the High Court, alleging harassment by the Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police (CP), who repeatedly summoned her in connection with a civil land dispute. Shyamala sought court intervention to prevent police from pressuring her to resolve the dispute outside the legal framework. During the hearing, her counsel, Vattikuti Suryanarayana, argued that Shyamala was being coerced by police under the guise of the PLCF to settle her ongoing civil dispute with Venkata Satya Naga Krishnamraju Gopalaraju and Venkata Satyanarayana Raju. The police, in response, claimed they invite parties for counselling under the PLCF to resolve disputes, but their participation is voluntary. They stated that since Shyamala did not attend counselling, the case was closed, and neither the Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police nor the Bheemunipatnam police had any further role. However, Justice Lakshmana Rao condemned the polices conduct, ruling that police have no authority to intervene in such matters or attempt to resolve them through forums like the PLCF. The High Court also addressed similar issues in Prakasam and Palnadu districts. In Prakasam, the Mundlamuru police were criticised for pressuring a petitioner to withdraw a civil suit filed in a civil court. Similarly, in Palnadu, Narsaraopet police were directed to stop intimidating a petitioner into withdrawing a civil suit filed in a lower court. The court firmly instructed the police in both districts to refrain from interfering in civil disputes or pressuring parties to withdraw legal cases.
Holding Mahanadu at Kadapa tribute to party cadre: CM Naidu
KADAPA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday dedicated the partys success in last years elections (93% strike rate and over 57% vote share) to the unwavering sacrifices of the party workers. The Telugu Desam Party national president inaugurated the three-day annual party conclave Mahanadu in Kadapa on Tuesday. Addressing the party cadre, Naidu said, Holding Mahanadu at the divine doorstep of Kadapa after our historic win in seven out of ten seats in this district, reflects the passion our cadre continue to exhibit even a year after the polls. Calling the 2024 electoral victory extraordinary, Naidu credited party workers for their relentless commitment. With a 93% strike rate and over 57% vote share, our performance is historic. The credit belongs to the grassroots warriors who kept the TDP flag flying high despite severe oppression. He recalled the repressive atmosphere of the previous YSRCP government, condemning its culture of vendetta, false cases, and political murders. Our workers fought bravely, even when their lives were at risk. Their sacrifices brought the alliance to power. Mahanadu is our tribute to them. Naidu emphasized that no other political party has had as profound an influence on public life as the TDP. From ending the Patel-Patwari system to empowering women through DWCRA, from Rs 2/kg rice to Rs 4,000 pensions, from education reforms to IT exports TDPs legacy is one of transformative governance. TDP is not just a political party, it is a trendsetter, he said, highlighting contributions such as infrastructure development, girl child education, womens property rights, and drip irrigation subsidies for Rayalaseema farmers. TDPs policies became blueprint for other parties He reiterated the partys commitment to clean governance, visionary planning, and positive politics. While in opposition, we fought against corruption. In power, we have delivered transparent administration. Our governance model continues to set benchmarks. TDPs policies have become a blueprint for other political parties across India, Naidu declared. He cited the partys pioneering role in social justice, particularly in empowering Backward Classes (BCs) with political representation long before it became a national priority. He also emphasised the partys institutional strength, with over one crore members, and its influence in shaping key national policies from power reforms to public-private partnership (PPP) models and decentralisation. Touching on the TDPs anti-corruption stance, Naidu pointed to past exposes, including the Obulapuram illegal mining case, land scams in Visakhapatnam and Kadapa, and land deals around Hyderabads Outer Ring Road (ORR) all of which have since been legally validated. The people have punished the corrupt regime. We now bear the responsibility to deliver justice through due process. Reflecting on the coalition governments first year in office, Naidu outlined achievements such as restoring law and order, boosting public morale, launching welfare schemes, and reviving investor confidence. We scrapped the land-grabbing act, issued DSC notifications, expanded pensions to 64 lakh people, and increased honorariums for priests, imams, and pastors. We are rebuilding the state brick by brick, with support from the Centre and our alliance partners the BJP and Jana Sena. From NTRs dream of irrigation to todays policy-driven growth, TDP has always prioritised Rayalaseemas upliftment, Naidu added. He announced that the party had received Rs 22.53 crore in donations in a single day, following an appeal by Nara Lokesh regarding the partys financial constraints. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donors. Top contributors included Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy- Rs 5 crore, P Narayana - Rs 1 crore, TG Bharath-Rs 1 crore, TANA Satish -Rs 1 crore, BC Janardhan Reddy-Rs 1.5 crore, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy-Rs 1 crore and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy- Rs 1.5 crore. Naidu assured that these donations would be used for party operations and welfare of grassroots workers. Highlighting the legislative vision, he stated that the six bills proposed by Nara Lokesh have the potential to reshape Andhra Pradeshs history. He emphasized the TDPs inclusive leadership model, involving both village-level and state-level leaders, and promised fair opportunities based on performance.
HRD minister Lokesh dismisses urgency for CM post, praises CM Naidu's leadership
KADAPA: TDP general secretary and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh has sought to know what is the urgency for him to take the post of Chief Minister. In an informal interaction with mediapersons on the sidelines of Mahanadu on Tuesday, Lokesh described Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu as a young and dynamic leader. He is of the firm opinion that the nation and the state require the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naidu respectively. In response to a question from reporters that when he is going to be the next Chief Minister, Lokesh said the services of Naidu are immense to AP. On the reports about his elevation as the working president of TDP, Lokesh said he is ready to work in any position if directed by the party high command. In fact, there is no need for positions to serve the people, he observed. Stating that leaders can know the facts through field visits, Lokesh said he came to know the problems of tobacco farmers when he went to console the family of slain TDP leader Veeraiah Chowdary in Ongole. Immediately, I alerted the government machinery and the Group of Ministers to resolve the issue, he said. By giving more priority to governance in the past, there was a gap with the party cadre. However, now the Chief Minister as well as I, while participating in official programmes, are also meeting the party cadre, he said. On the allotment of land to Ursa in Visakhapatnam, he challenged that he is ready to resign in case of proving that land was given at a throwaway price of 99 paise per acre to it, and sought to know whether YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and other leaders making allegations on the issue are ready for it. The development of Vizag will go beyond expectations with the creation of five lakh jobs in the city. The NDA government is taking every initiative for the development of North Andhra. Decentralisation of development is the target of our government, and the establishment of industries in all parts of the State is evident, he highlighted. Stating that he is fortunate to have met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lokesh said Modi gave him several valuable suggestions. During our interaction, the Prime Minister made several useful suggestions, he said. He asserted that industries will not go out of the State as there is no YSRCP government. On the liquor scam, Lokesh said the attitude of Jagan is like a thief crying theft. Asserting that women should be respected in society, Lokesh felt that politicians should change their language because they are being followed by more people in society. I have witnessed the agony of my mother. We are not uttering any objectionable words against the family members of Jagan, and are not sparing in case anyone from our party resorts to criticising women, Lokesh added.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh lost 468 hectares of primary forest in 2024, marking a slight increase from the 424 hectares lost in 2023, according to data released by Global Forest Watch (GFW), a coalition of over 100 organisations. The data reveals a fluctuating yet steady trend in forest degradation over recent years, with losses recorded at 193 hectares in 2022, 143 hectares in 2021, 225 hectares in 2020, and 363 hectares in 2019. In 2020, the state had approximately 2.46m hectares of forest, covering nearly 15% of its total land area. However, in 2024 alone, AP lost about 5.73 thousand hectares of natural forest, resulting in an estimated 1.75 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. From 2001 to 2024, the state lost 42.4 thousand hectares of tree cover, representing a 3.8 percent decrease since 2000 and accounting for 23.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. Annual tree cover loss figures for recent years include 2.87 thousand hectares in 2024, 2.96 thousand hectares in 2023, 1.24 thousand hectares in 2022, 854 hectares in 2021, 1.40 thousand hectares in 2020, and 1.90 thousand hectares in 2019. AP 2nd in gaining tree cover during 2000-20 Between 2001 and 2024, 66 per cent of the tree cover loss in AP occurred in areas where deforestation was the dominant driver. Key causes of deforestation include conversion to permanent agriculture (26.8 thousand hectares), expansion of settlements and infrastructure (214 hectares), and hard commodities cover (23 hectares). Temporary disturbances contributing to tree cover loss were logging (1.43 thousand hectares), shifting cultivation (12.7 thousand hectares), wildfires (95 hectares), and other natural disturbances (42 hectares). Two regions in AP accounted for 76 per cent of all tree cover loss between 2001 and 2024, with East Godavari experiencing the highest loss at 16.4 thousand hectares, significantly higher than the average of 3.26 thousand hectares in other areas. Despite the losses, the State recorded a notable gain in tree cover between 2000 and 2020, adding 194 thousand hectares. This increase represents 11 per cent of Indias total tree cover gain during the same period. AP ranked second among Indian states for tree cover gain, behind Karnataka, which gained 222 thousand hectares. Regarding fire incidents, between 2001 and 2024, AP lost 1.39 thousand hectares of tree cover due to fires and 41.0 thousand hectares due to other reasons. Under these prevailing conditions, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations across North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) on Sunday. In addition, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected at isolated places across NCAP, SCAP, and Rayalaseema. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely to occur in these regions. These conditions are forecast to persist until May 28. The IMD further noted that from May 20 onwards, isolated heavy rainfall has been recorded in NCAP and Yanam. Despite the active monsoon conditions, no change in maximum daytime temperatures is expected across AP and Yanam during the next seven days. Also, a fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27, according to the IMD.

Terror suspects in Andhra grilled by NIA, ATS over IED plot, foreign funding, extremist links
VIZIANAGARAM: Vizianagaram II town police, along with officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and Counter-Intelligence (CI), began questioning two terror suspects in connection with an alleged conspiracy to detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across India. Siraj Ur Rehaman (29) and Syed Sameer (28) were taken into seven-day police custody on Friday after being transferred from Visakhapatnam Central Prison to the Police Training College (PTC) in Vizianagaram. Their interrogation was approved by the Additional Judicial First-Class Magistrate Court, Vizianagaram, to gather key details about their reported involvement in planning terror acts and building explosive devices. Police said DSP-ranked officers began separate interrogations of the duo at the PTC. Security around the facility was intensified, with in-charge SP SV Madhava Reddy and Additional SP Sowmyalatha overseeing the arrangements. Authorities reported that Siraj and Sameer initially refused to cooperate but were later questioned on their alleged plans to support extremist groups such as KHILAFAT, JIHADI, AHIM (Al-Hind Ittehadul Muslimeen), BLT (Bhagawa Love Trap), and GHAZWA-E-HIND. Investigators are also probing their suspected attempts to develop a chemical lab and produce rocket launchers targeting RSS and non-Muslim groups. Preliminary findings suggest Siraj became radicalised while living in Hyderabad and connected with like-minded individuals, including Sameer, via social media. He allegedly maintained encrypted communications with a suspected ISIS operative, Imran Akram (A6), based in Oman. Investigators also traced a Rs 3,000 foreign fund transfer to the suspects, believed to support terror activities. Police identified several others believed to be connected to Siraj through online platforms or personal meetings in Mumbai. These include Abuthalem (alias Abu Musab), Adnan Kureshi, Dilshan, Mohsin Shaik, Jasser (alias Aman), Fahad, Amir Ansari, Sahabaz, and Zeeshan. The NIA is currently tracking these individuals and potential links to international terror networks, particularly those based in Oman and Saudi Arabia. Speaking to TNIE, a senior police officer stated, Their plans and affiliations remain unclear at this stage. Further interrogation over the coming days is necessary to determine whether they have ties to any major terror groups.

Andhra Pradesh soaks in May as it records 126% excess rain
VISAKHAPATNAM: The State has recorded 88.5 mm of rainfall, significantly higher than the normal average of 39.2 mm during the period between May 1 and 21. This represents a 126 per cent departure from the norm. This categorises the rainfall as large excess under the India Meteorological Departments (IMD) classification. The widespread rainfall has brought a welcome respite from the summer heat across the State. Unlike last year, which was marked by intense heatwave conditions during the same period, the current season has remained comparatively cooler, aided by recurring showers and cloud cover. Explaining the current weather pattern, Dr Sagili Karuna Sagar, scientist at IMD Amaravati Centre, said that pre-monsoon showers are typically caused by synoptic systems forming over the oceans. At present, there are troughs and cyclonic circulations over both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which are responsible for the ongoing rain and thunderstorms, he said. He also noted that, unlike in May 2024, this year has seen multiple weather systems, preventing the occurrence of major heatwaves so far. This year, multiple troughs and cyclonic circulations have developed, resulting in frequent rains. As a result, we have not observed any significant heatwave conditions in Andhra Pradesh so far this summer, he added. Regarding the speculation around the early onset of the Southwest Monsoon, Bharati, scientist and director at the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, clarified that monsoon predictions for Andhra Pradesh can only be made after it sets in over Kerala. The monsoon must first enter Kerala before we can forecast its onset in Andhra Pradesh. An early onset in Kerala does not automatically indicate an early arrival here, she explained. She added that conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon onset over Kerala within the next 2-3 days, with the expected date around May 27. A majority of the districts in the State have recorded higher-than-normal rainfall levels, particularly in the large excess category. Districts in Coastal Andhra Pradesh reported departures ranging from 67% to 339% above normal. Districts like Alluri Sitaramaraju, NTR, and Palnadu registered excess rainfall, while East Godavari and Srikakulam received rainfall within the normal range. All Rayalaseema districts recorded large excess rainfall, including Anantapur, with departures between 93% and 303% above normal.
YS Sharmila slams brother YS Jagan Mohan Reddy over alleged Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president YS Sharmila launched a scathing attack on her brother and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, accusing him of misconduct in the alleged liquor scam and inappropriate behaviour towards police. Labelling the scam a thriller series, she claimed it had rattled the YSRCP, with Jagans threats to strip police officers reflecting poorly on his stature. Speaking a press conference on Thursday, she cited the YSRCP governments alleged 40-day detention of actor Kadambari Jethwani and harassment of former MP and Deputy Assembly Speaker K Raghu Rama Krishna Raju as evidence of power misuse. Sharmila challenged Jagan to prove his innocence in the Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam by demanding an ACB or CBI probe in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, emulating their late father YS Rajasekhara Reddy. She questioned the absence of digital payments for liquor sales during the YSRCP regime. Sharmila also slammed the State and the Centre for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant crisis, where she was detained while protesting for workers rights. She accused the BJP-led NDA government of conspiring to privatise the plant, eyeing its `4 lakh crore land for corporate giants like Adani and Jindal.

BJP government killing Vizag steel plant silently, alleges APCC president YS Sharmila
VIJAYAWADA: APCC chief YS Sharmila Reddy accused the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of systematically undermining Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), established by the Congress government, which was once a profit-making entity. Sharmila, who staged a hunger strike at VSP in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, alleged that the BJP was employing a silent killing strategy to weaken the steel plant, likening it to the proverb of driving a dog mad to justify its killing. She claimed that the government was deliberately starving the plant of raw materials, raising export prices to burden it, and denying it a dedicated iron ore mine, despite Congress earlier plans to provide one. The APCC chief denounced the governments claim of rescuing the plant with Rs 11,000 crore as a falsehood, alleging that Rs 8,000 crore was reclaimed as bank loans, and the remaining Rs 3,000 crore was tied to a condition to lay off 5,000 workers. Already, 2,000 workers have been sacked, with plans to remove 3,000 more, reducing the workforce from 34,000 to half, she charged.

As a temporary relief measure, 175 prisoners have been transferred to Rajahmundry Central Prison, he added. He said, Around 60% of prisoners are below the age of 32, raising concerns about the growing involvement of young individuals in criminal activities. He mentioned that around 300 prisoners from other states were also present, in the past few years, bail for ganja-related cases was typically granted after one month, but currently, with the full implementation of the relevant Acts, the process now takes between one to six months, depending on the severity of the crime. Mahesh emphasised that strict security measures and thorough checks have been implemented within the jail premises, with regular inspections being conducted to ensure safety. He said, Out of 30 acres, till now we have dug around 5 acres in the jail premises, where we found some mobile phones recently. We will dig the total 30 acres. Speaking to media persons at his residence in Undavalli on Wednesday, Naidu announced that a special campaign titled Yogandhra-2025 will be held for one month, starting May 21. A mega event involving five lakh participants will take place on June 21, stretching from RK Beach to Bhogapuram. CM plans to make yoga mandatory in schools Naidu also launched the official Yogandhra website, opening registrations for participants. Recalling that the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2014 to observe International Yoga Day globally, he said yoga transcends boundaries of region and religion. It is a universal practice that promotes well-being and balance in life. In todays fast-paced world, people are under immense stress due to technology and the mechanical nature of life. Yoga is the only path to inner peace. With Prime Minister Modis vision and leadership, the yoga movement has gained momentum, and it is everyones responsibility to carry it forward, the Chief Minister said. The Chief Minister stated that the government aims to train 10 lakh people in yoga and issue them certificates. He acknowledged organisations like Art of Living, Isha Foundation, Patanjali, and the Brahma Kumaris for their efforts in promoting yoga nationwide. I have been personally associated with these organisations for many years. In the past, I organised yoga sessions for IAS and IPS officers, and ministers, with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of Art of Living and Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev of Isha. The Brahma Kumaris have also established centres around the world, he recalled. We are rolling out yoga training programmes from cities to villages. Yoga awareness programmes will be conducted at more than 100 tourism and spiritual destinations, including the Amaravati Buddha Stupa, Lepakshi, Gandikota, Araku, Lambasingi, Konaseema, and the Godavari region. As Prime Minister Modi promotes yoga globally, it is our responsibility to do the same, he said. The state government will collaborate with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga to train 2,000 yoga instructors. Yoga-related content will be incorporated into school syllabus, and students will receive one hour yoga training daily once schools reopen, Naidu added.
