Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has issued an order for disposal of 335 liquor shops reserved for toddy tapping communities (Geetha Kulalu) under the excise policy for 2024-26. The norms say that the population of toddy tapping communities (Geetha Kulalu) will be based on the Smart Pulse Survey, 2016 for 13 erstwhile districts. Their population will be mapped for 26 new districts. No shops will be reserved for them in the Scheduled Areas in the districts. 600 employees opt for VRS at Vizag steel plant
Vizag Steel Plant (VSP). (Photo: Twitter) Vizag Steel Plant (VSP). (Photo: Twitter) Visakhapatnam: Around 600 employees of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) have applied for voluntary retirement as on Monday evening. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, a corporate entity of the VSP, rolled out the VRS on January 15 which will close on January 31. Management of the RINL in its circular said that VRS was to rationalise the existing manpower, achieve optimum human resource utilization, cost reduction as well as improvement in productivity. The move of the employees seeking VRS has come as a big surprise as there was presumption that staffers would stick to the company, after the Centers announcement of a package worth `11,400 crore. The employees were not overwhelmed by the package. The work pressure, non-payment of salaries and in some cases health reasons prompted them to opt for early retirement, said K.V.D. Prasad, the general secretary of Steel Executive Association. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle in Visakhapatnam on Monday, Prasad said the company has been facing human resources crisis for the past four years. Around 1,200 employees have resigned before the government announced proposals for strategic disinvestment. Nearly 780 left before the VRS was announced and another 1,000 would be leaving under the voluntary retirement scheme, he said. The permanent employees strength would be reduced to 9,900, far less than other steel plants in the country, he added. Elaborating further, Prasad said the existing strength of employees can run only two blast furnaces and when the third blast furnace becomes operational by August this year, the employees would have to work more than 16 hours to operate all the three blast furnaces. Compared to other plants, Prasad said that SAIL has 2,700 employees for making one million tonnes of steel, whereas Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is operating with 1,700 employees which are likely to reduce further. There has been no recruitment in the last four years, whereas SAIL is inducting employees continuously, the general secretary added. He said younger employees are leaving the Vizag plant to join other steel plants in the country. General secretary of Janshakti Mazdoor Sabha, Varasala Srinivas, said the Vizag steel plant had a turnover of `28,000 crore and achieved an operational profit of `940 crore when the central government announced the disinvestment of the RINL on January 27, 2021. The plant which was producing 7.3 million tonnes of steel, has come down to 1.5 million now.

600 Employees Opt for VRS at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
Visakhapatnam: Around 600 employees of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) have applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) as of Monday evening. The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of VSP, introduced the scheme on January 15, and it will remain open until January 31. In its official circular, the management stated that the VRS aims to rationalize manpower, optimize human resource utilization, reduce costs, and improve productivity. The significant number of applications has surprised many, especially following the central governments announcement of a financial package worth 11,400 crore for the plant. However, KVD Prasad, General Secretary of the Steel Executive Association, explained that employees are dissatisfied with the package and cited reasons such as work pressure, delayed salary payments, and health concerns as key factors behind their decision to opt for early retirement. Prasad also highlighted the ongoing human resources crisis at the plant. Over the past four years, approximately 1,200 employees resigned before the governments strategic disinvestment proposal, 780 left prior to the VRS launch, and another 1,000 are expected to leave under the scheme. This will bring the permanent employee strength down to 9,900, significantly lower than other steel plants in the country. The reduced workforce can only operate two blast furnaces. When the third blast furnace becomes operational in August this year, employees will need to work over 16 hours daily to manage all three, Prasad warned. He further pointed out that other steel plants, like SAIL, employ 2,700 workers per million tons of production, whereas VSP operates with only 1,700 employees, a number expected to decrease further. Additionally, younger employees have been leaving VSP for better opportunities in other steel aplants across the country, adding to the workforce shortage. According to Janshakti Mazdoor Sabha General Secretary Varasala Srinivas, the steel plant once had a turnover of 28,000 crore and an operational profit of 940 crore when the central government announced its disinvestment plan for RINL in January 2021. At that time, the plant was producing 7.3 million tons of steel annually, a figure that has now dropped to 1.5 million tons.

Ratha Saptami celebrations marred by inadequate facilities for devotees
Visakhapatnam : The Ratha Saptami celebrations at Arasavalli are scheduled to start on February 2 and continue for three days. The state government has designated this event a state festival. In anticipation of the celebrations, various development initiatives are currently being implemented at the temple. However, the removal of certain facilities, including buildings, sheds and toilets, is set to pose considerable challenges for devotees. Many individuals have expressed their frustration over the negligence of the authorities in providing temporary facilities. The dismantling of the Annadanam and Prasadam preparation kitchen has necessitated the establishment of a temporary facility at the dormitories located behind Indra Pushkarini. Unfortunately, this alternative site lacks reliable water supply, which has resulted in prasadam preparation being conducted in verandasan arrangement that is less than ideal. Devotee G Soumya noted, We are waiting in line and are compelled to endure exposure to the sun due to the removal of four sheds. No temporary tents are provided. Additionally, there is a deficiency in the provision for drinking water. One dormitory complex has been demolished, while another area remains cluttered with coconut shells, beds, mattresses, and other materials, complicating the accommodation for those reaching here from far distances. Furthermore, devotee Madhusudhan Rao commented, We are experiencing confusion regarding the location of the prasadam counter. Sanitation amenities are non-existent, including toilets, bathing and changing facilities. The lack of water in the hair removal area has compelled many devotees to bathe in the contaminated waters, and we are obliged to change clothing outdoors. At the Nithyanandam, we are standing while consuming our meals due to the absence of seating options. With only a few days remaining for the start of the Ratha Saptami festival, the ongoing removal of structures continues to generate uncertainty regarding the timeline for completion and the establishment of necessary arrangements. Despite officials conducting meetings and proposing various suggestions, progress at the operational level has been inadequate. Stakeholders have expressed concern that a failure to complete these tasks in a timely manner may result in significant difficulties during the celebrations. Officials have indicated that the removal of structures is being executed in accordance with government directives and they have assured the devotees that basic facilities will be provided to devotees upon the completion of the work.

Rs 3 lakh crore projects approved for AP in six months: Amit Shah
VIJAYAWADA: Emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modis support for the development of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah highlighted that the Centre has approved projects totalling over Rs 3 lakh crore for the State in the last six months. As part of his two-day tour to Vijayawada, he addressed a gathering on the 20th Raising Day of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) at Kondapavuluru in Krishna district on Sunday. He also inaugurated the southern campus of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and the NDRFs 10th Battalion campus near Vijayawada. Additionally, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for various projects worth approximately Rs 220 crore. Shah remarked, Today, I can say with confidence that NDRFs implementation of NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) policies on the ground has played a pivotal role in positioning India as a global leader in disaster management. India has taken the lead worldwide in disaster-resilient infrastructure by setting up CDRI (Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure). We are committed to APs growth: HM Backed by resilient infrastructure in the area of disaster management, India has emerged as a global leader in the sector by adopting a zero casualty goal during calamities, he said, and explained that the approach to disaster management has shifted from being relief-centric to rescue-centric in order to save lives during calamities. In such a short span of time, NDRF has established itself as a credible organisation not only within India but also globally, he added. Union Home Minister Amit Shah goes round the NIDM new building at the 10th NDRF Battalion after inaugurating it at Kondapavuluru on Sunday | Express Lashing out at the YSRCP, Shah stated that Andhra Pradesh suffered significant setbacks in the past five years due to the mismanagement of the previous government. He added that while the NDRF responds during natural disasters, the NDA steps in to assist the people during man-made crises. The Union Minister stressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu are working together to drive growth in Andhra Pradesh and make up for the losses incurred under the previous YSRCP regime. Naidu is propelling the State forward through sound administrative, financial, and developmental strategies, while PM Modi has facilitated investments and aid exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore for the State in the past six months, he said. Shah also pointed out that the Union Cabinet recently approved a financial package of Rs 11,000 crore to revive the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, aiming to preserve its status as a symbol of pride for AP. Regarding the Amaravati capital city project, Shah noted that while the previous government neglected the ambitious initiative, the Centre has facilitated loans of Rs 27,000 crore through HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation) and the World Bank, in line with Naidus vision. YSRCP demands clarity from TDP, Centre on Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation
VIJAYAWADA: The YSRCP has demanded the TDP-led NDA government to categorically state that it is against the privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). Speaking to the media in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Botcha Satyanarayana said, The aid package given by the Centre is part of the privatisation move as there are several riders in it. The YSRCP is committed to the slogan of Visakha Ukku, Andhrula Hakku. A similar aid package was given to the neighbouring State, and there were no riders in it. The coalition government should answer as to why salaries have not been paid to VSP staff so far, and are the developments in the true spirit of Visakha Ukku agitation, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the State, but there was no assurance from them that VSP would not be privatised. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also did not give any assurance in this regard. This shows that there is something wrong with the coalitions views pertaining to VSP privatisation, Botcha suspected. The previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government was steadfast in opposing the privatisation of VSP, and it was acknowledged by the Centre. If the coalition is sincere in opposing the VSP privatisation, why they did not tell categorically while sharing the platform with the Prime Minister or the Home Minister? he asked. CPM urges Chandrababu Naidu to secure permanent PSU status for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
VIJAYAWADA: State CPM secretary V Srinivasa Rao on Sunday wrote a letter to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, urging him to initiate permanent measures to ensure that Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) remains a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU). He welcomed the Centres announcement of Rs 11,400 crore aid package for the revival of VSP. However, he felt that it is only a temporary measure, and there is a need for a permanent solution to the problems bogging down the steel giant. The merger of VSP with SAIL could be a viable solution and the majority of people also want it to happen, the CPM secretary said. He asked why the coalition government, which influences the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, is not making any effort in this direction. He also emphasised the need for allocating captive iron ore mines to the steel plant to address the problem of raw material, and reduce the cost of production.

Two killed, 12 patients injured as college bus rams into lorry near Visakhapatnam-Raipur NH
VIZIANAGARAM: A man and his daughter, were killed, and 12 others were injured in a road accident on Saturday when a private medical college bus from the Anil Neerukonda Institute of Medical Sciences rammed into a stationary lorry with a punctured tyre. The incident occurred on the Visakhapatnam-Raipur National Highway near Madhupada village under Gajapathinagaram mandal in Vizianagaram district. The lorry had its hazard indicators on to alert other vehicles of the issue. However, the bus driver lost control, leading to the mishap. The deceased have been identified as Subratho Roy, 33, and his daughter Mehak Roy, 3, from Koraput district in Odisha. According to sources, the college had conducted a free medical camp in Koraput district on Friday and referred at least 40 patients for hospitalisation in Visakhapatnam for surgeries or other treatments. The accident occurred while these patients were being transported to the Anil Neerukonda Institute of Medical Sciences in Visakhapatnam. The injured passengers were trapped in the bus for over an hour with no way to escape. Upon receiving information from locals, Gajapathinagaram police rushed to the scene and initiated a rescue operation to free the passengers. At least five ambulances from different parts of Vizianagaram were dispatched to the site and transported the injured to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Vizianagaram. Later, they were shifted to the Anil Neerukonda Institute of Medical Sciences for advanced treatment. Eyewitnesses suspected that the bus driver collided with the stationary lorry due to poor visibility on the road and possible fatigue from lack of sleep. MSME, SERP, and NRI Relations Minister Kondapalli Srinivas inquired with district officials about the incident and directed them to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Tribal Leaders Push for Road Clearance in Chalisingam
Visakhapatnam : In a poignant demonstration of community solidarity, residents of C.K. Padu, especially those from the tribal community, rallied to support Velam Bheemaraju, a 62-year-old individual facing significant health challenges, recently. Fellow villagers and his family members transported Bheemaraju for three kilometres on a doli, a traditional makeshift stretcher. The incident highlights the enduring difficulties encountered by the 403 scheduled tribe (ST) Bhagata individuals residing in Chalisingam, a hilltop village within the Chimalapadu panchayat of Ravikamatham mandal in Anakapalle district. The underlying problem stems from forest officials impeding road construction in the area. In the fiscal year 202324, the previous government allocated a budget of 2.66 crore for construction of a bituminous road under GO 726. The foundation stone for the road had been laid on January 24, 2024. However, progress on the BT road remains stalled due to the absence of necessary permissions from the forest department. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan have decried practices, such as people carrying patients on a doli for three kilometres or relying on horseback or foot travel. Recently, ASR district forest officer visited the area, instilling confidence among the Adivasi of Chalisingam about construction of the bituminous road. Yet the formal permission has not been granted, necessitating the continued use of doli to transport the ill and infirm. Tribal leaders, including CH Shankar Rao and Cheepuru Ramesh, have appealed to forest department that it expedite the permission for the BT road, thereby assisting the community. AP Girijana Sangham Fifth Schedule Sadhana Committee district honorary president K. Govinda Rao has called on the Anakapalle district collector to visit Chalisingam and know for himself the difficulty being faced by the tribal community, before granting permission for the bituminous road.

Hyderabad: Friendship on Instagram landed a woman and her friend into trouble after Secunderabad Railway Police (GRP) in coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested them for smuggling ganja from Visakhapatnam to Solapur in Maharashtra via Secunderabad railway station. The arrested have been identified as Ishrat Bano, 20, of Madhya Pradesh and Kanchan, 21, of Chhattisgarh. The prime accused Raja of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh is absconding. The railway police said Bano and Kanchan were friends when they studied in the same school up to intermediate at Bilaspur. They became addicted to consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes. Two years ago Bano developed a friendship with Raja on Instagram. Bano shared her problems, habits and status with Raja. Raja suggested Bano to assist him in transporting ganja to Maharashtra offering her to pay Rs.1,000 per packet. Bano then agreed to the offer and helped Raja transport ganja thrice a month. Meanwhile, Kanchan often expressed her desire with Bano to go on a long trip. Raja assigned the task of transporting ganja to Solapur. On January 16, 2025, Bano called Kanchan to come to Raipur for a trip to Solapur. During the journey, Bano revealed to Kanchan about the transportation ganja from Visakhapatnam to Solapur and convinced her by offering to share the earnings equally. Thereafter, both Bano and Kanchan went to Visakhapatnam railway station from Raipur. Bano then2 took two back packs of dry ganja in eight packets from an unknown person. She handed over a bag to Kanchan and both boarded a general coach of Konark Express to reach Solapur. On Friday at about 1.15 pm, the train arrived on platform one at Secunderabad station when the police nabbed them while moving under suspicious circumstances. As many as 17.767 kgs of dry ganja worth Rs.4.44 lakh and two mobile phones were seized from the possession of the arrested women.

Centre announces Rs 11,440 crore package for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant's revival
VIJAYAWADA: The Central government has announced a financial package of Rs 11,440 crore for the revival of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited). The announcement was made by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday and was later confirmed during a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is a Schedule-A Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Steel, with a current installed capacity of 7.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The revival package includes an equity infusion of Rs 10,300 crore and the conversion of Rs 1,140 crore of working capital loans into 7% non-cumulative preference share capital, redeemable after 10 years, to ensure RINL remains a going concern. The equity support will allow RINL to address operational challenges, raise working capital, and gradually achieve full production capacity of 7.3 MTPA. It is expected to stabilise the Indian steel market, protect livelihoods, and enable the plant to operate at full capacity, contributing significantly to the economy. Describing it as the largest package ever for RINL, Vaishnaw highlighted the strategic importance of VSP, the only offshore steel plant in the country under government ownership. He noted that the package would enable the activation of two blast furnaces by January 2025, with all three blast furnaces set to be operational by August 2025, significantly increasing production. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi remarked that the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Andhra Pradesh. During yesterdays Cabinet meeting, it was decided to provide equity support of over Rs 10,000 crore for the plant. This has been done understanding the importance of the steel sector in building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, he said. After capital infusion, privatisation of RINL will not be considered: HDK Elaborating on the package, Union Minister of Steel HD Kumaraswamy said privatisation of RINL will not be considered following the capital infusion. This decision honours the sentiments of the people of Andhra Pradesh. The government is committed to protecting the plant and ensuring its growth, he asserted. The Minister outlined how the package became a reality through persistent efforts and multiple review meetings with stakeholders, including the Finance Minister and bankers. He assured that all three blast furnaces would reach over 92% production levels by mid-2025. RINL has been grappling with severe financial and operational challenges. Its total liabilities have exceeded Rs 35,000 crore, with defaults in loan and interest payments. The Steel Plant began facing issues when the plant expanded its capacity from 3 MTPA to 7.3 MTPA between 2014 and 2017, funded by loans at high interest rates. Additionally, the lack of captive iron ore mines forced the plant to rely on expensive raw materials from the open market, further straining its financial position. Kumaraswamy revealed that efforts are underway to secure captive iron ore mines for RINL from Odisha, which would significantly reduce costs and stabilise operations. He expressed confidence in transforming RINL into Indias leading steel producer, a goal he described as both a challenge and a commitment. Union Ministers Ram Mohan Naidu and Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma also welcomed the package. They thanked Prime Minister Modi for fulfilling the long-standing demand to protect the Vizag Steel Plant. The Centre has kept its promise and safeguarded the rights of Andhra Pradesh, Ram said. He recalled Naidus frequent discussions with the Prime Minister regarding RINL and Kumaraswamys visit to the plant to understand its issues firsthand. The revival plan aligns with the National Steel Policy, 2017, which aims to increase steel production to support economic growth and ensure the efficient utilisation of public resources. It also supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening indigenous industries and securing employment for thousands of workers and their families, said Minister Varma.
CM Chandrababu Naidu hails Centres Rs 11,440-crore package for steel plant
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has affirmed that saving Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) is the States responsibility, citing its sentimental value rooted in the slogan Visakha Ukku - Andhrula Hakku. Addressing the media on Friday, he welcomed the allocation of Rs 11,440 crore special package for VSP, and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy for their support to Andhra Pradesh. Highlighting the NDAs commitment to the steel plant, he recalled how Rs 1,650 crore in equity was allocated during Atal Bihari Vajpayees tenure in 1996 to rescue VSP. He criticised the previous YSRCP governments neglect of VSP over the last five years. Reiterating his election promise, he said VSP will be saved without privatisation, and detailed how his government secured the revival package within seven months of taking office. Naidu credited Modi for responding positively to the States request, and urged VSP employees to work collectively to ensure profitability and justify the allocated funds. Plans include employing skilled workers, securing iron ore resources, and efficiently utilising the plants 20,000-acre land. Naidu also called for appointing a skilled CEO to oversee the plant operations. Outlining progress in seven months, Naidu mentioned fulfilling key election promises, including Amaravati development, the Polavaram project, and a railway zone. He highlighted that Rs 15,000 crore was allocated to External Aided Projects (EAP) and Rs 12,157 crore for Polavaram, with the new diaphragm wall foundation to be laid soon. Land was allotted for the railway zone, and Modi laid the foundation. Naidu emphasised the States industrial growth, citing MoUs worth Rs 4 lakh crore signed, including Rs 2.08 lakh crore in launched projects during Modis recent visit to Visakhapatnam. He announced TCSs entry to create job opportunities, and partnerships with Google to position Andhra Pradesh as a leader in data centres, AI and analytics. A sea cable project connecting Vizag and Singapore is also planned. He highlighted the joint green hydrogen project by NTPC and Genco, worth Rs 1.8 lakh crore and the establishment of RCR Mittal steel plant in Nakkapalli, with Phase-I producing 7 million metric tonnes of steel. Vizag and Anakapalli will soon merge into a single city under these industrial developments, he said. Additionally, Naidu announced the Rs 14,000 crore Pharma City and bulk drug park in Nakkapalli, generating 70,000 jobs. He also detailed projects like Orvakal Industrial Smart City worth Rs 2,786 crore, Kopparthy Industrial Cluster worth Rs 2,137 crore, and national highways valued at Rs 55,000 crore to be completed in three years. Infrastructure projects include an 8-lane Outer Ring Road in Amaravati, and a Rs 400-crore tourism corridor connecting Suryalanka, Srisailam, Rajahmundry, and Sangameswaralayam. Highlighting the GST growth rate of 12.94% with projections to reach 15%, Naidu outlined a vision to quadruple per capita income by 2047, emphasising the Centres support for development and poverty alleviation. He assured investors of the States commitment to growth, and promised to create 20 lakh new jobs. The Chief Minister concluded by urging VSP workers to collaborate responsibly for the plants future, which has been revived with State-provided resources, addressing power and water dues, ensuring its sustainability.

Tribal farmers in AP struggling for rights over their traditionally cultivated lands
Visakhapatnam : In north Andhra's diverse landscape, farmers of several tribal villages, including Peddapet in Rolugunta mandal of Anakapalle district, are continuing to struggle for rights over lands that they have been traditionally cultivating. These farmers had worked hard to convert the government wastelands near their villages into thriving orchards of cashew, teak and mango trees. However, they suffered a terrible shock when they realised that the D-form pattas of lands they had developed are in the name of people who are non-locals. The tribal farmers, including Vampuri Rajababu of Peddapet, apart from Nukaraju, K. Demudu, L. Rajababu, K. Devi, M. Mahesh, R. Demudu, Rattela Chandra Rao, Kedari Buchayamma, Neelapu Nukalamma, Kotama Achayya and Kodama Kaad Naidu, contend that the lands, totalling to 28.57 acres, which they have developed over decades, rightfully belong to them. The fact that the lands they are cultivating must be in their names dawned on them on April 10, 2010. Since then, they have been petitioning authorities, such as tahsildar, mandal surveyor, Anakapalle district collector, RDO Narsipatnam and ITDA Paderu. They went on to raise the matter during the Jagananna survey conducted by the erstwhile YSRC government and the recent revenue sadassulu organised by the N. Chandrababu Naidu-led NDA alliance government. Tribal farmers charge that bureaucratic apathy and inefficient management of records has led to their continued plight. In an interview, Vampuri Rajababu told Deccan Chronicle , In Peddapet village, tribal farmers like me have developed the wastelands over decades. But the D-form pattas that should rightfully be in our names have been allotted to individuals who have never been around here. Not just that, these outsiders have gone on to receive the freehold rights. Authorities concerned are not implementing the norms stipulated by the government itself in our village, Rajababu protested. He went on to charge that errors have crept into Jagananna Resurvey documentation to the extent that names of tribal farmers who have cultivated the lands for decades including his Rajababu do not figure in the Adangal documentation. Tribal women farmer Neelapu Nukalamma told DC , We attempted to rectify these errors through participation in Revenue Sadassulu. Yet we have been unable to secure land titles for the lands that we cultivate. The farmers have charged the village revenue officer (VRO) of not documenting in Adangal that they have been cultivating the lands. When Deccan Chronicle contacted mandal revenue officer (MRO) Ch. Nagamamma, she confirmed the challenges that the tribal farmers are facing. She maintained that RDO Narsipatnam is fully aware of the situation. Tribal farmers of Peddapet are demanding the annulment of D-form pattas issued to non-locals. Further, the tribal farmers must be recognised as the rightful cultivators by allotting them the pattas.

Andhra CM Naidu outlines vision for USD 2.4 trillion GSDP by 2047; warns against YSRCP policies
VIJAYAWADA: Reiterating that the TDP-led NDA government is committed to achieving a USD 2.4 trillion GSDP and a USD 42,000 (Rs 58,14,916) per capita income (PCI) by 2047, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stressed that this goal will not be attainable if the public chooses the YSRCP. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Naidu highlighted that the State is growing at 12.94%, an increase of 4.03% compared to the previous year. He stated that the State government aims to achieve a 15% growth rate in order to meet the target set for 2047. This can only be achieved if our government remains in power. Otherwise, the regression witnessed in the last five years under the previous YSRCP government will become the norm. Our government has worked tirelessly to put the States economy back on track. We have successfully improved the growth rate by 4.03% in just seven months, he emphasised. Elaborating on the States growth rate over the last decade, the Chief Minister noted that the average GSDP for Andhra Pradesh was 13.5% between 2014 and 2019. Im encouraging more kids now as human resources are vital It dropped to 10.32% between 2019 and 2024. However, the growth rate has now risen to 12.94% in the past seven months. If we fail to continue this trend and if the people elect the YSRCP, the State will be thrust into a vicious debt trap, he warned. He pointed out that agriculture and allied sectors had received significant support during the previous TDP regime (2014-19), with the State recording 16.6% growth. He also highlighted that his government has cleared Rs 1,500 crore in dues to farmers over the last seven months. Per capita income growth was 13.21% during 2014-19, but fell to 9.06% between 2019 and 2024. In the last seven months, it has recovered to 12.9%, he explained. Emphasising that the State government is giving equal priority to both industrial and service sectors, as outlined in the 10 principles of the Swarna Andhra Vision 2047 document, the Chief Minister said, Our ultimate goal is to improve the living standards of the people. Efforts are underway to double the GSDP, which will, in turn, increase the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) by 4.5 times. More wealth will create opportunities for better schemes to alleviate poverty and ensure the overall progress of the State. This is the economic policy I believe in. Naidu explained that to achieve a per capita income of Rs 58,14,916, it is necessary not only to maintain the credibility of the government but also to enhance the States capability. We will develop action plans at the district, constituency, mandal, and village levels, focusing on regions where the PCI is lower. In addition to Visakhapatnam, Tirupati will also emerge as a growth engine due to rapid industrialisation in the coming days. Rayalaseema will experience higher growth by expanding horticultural practices, he said. Furthermore, he emphasised that the P4 (Public-Private-People-Partnership) model will be a game-changer. To a query from mediapersons, the Chief Minister said earlier he discouraged more children, but now he is encouraging more children, as human resources are the real assets and other assets are additional ones. Naidu said they are seriously contemplating with prospective effect of not allowing candidates without children to contest elections. He said they would work out the details in due course. Stating that family system in India is the best in the world, he maintained that big families are big assets. Stating that all systems under the YSRCP regime had been destroyed in the State, the Chief Minister cited examples of the destruction of Amaravati under the pretext of developing three capitals, and the neglect of the Polavaram Irrigation Project. He claimed that investors had been chased away and that the States natives were afraid to return. Highlighting the pensions being paid to beneficiaries, he announced that WhatsApp governance would be launched on January 18. Corruption-free services would be extended to the people, he added, stating, Our slogan is wealthy, healthy, and happy Andhra Pradesh.
Centre approves Rs 10,300 crore aid for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant amidst salary woes
VISAKHAPATNAM: In what could bring a temporary relief to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), the Centre is expected to announce an aid package of Rs 10,300 crore for it. TDP State president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao shared the development on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, stating that the Centre had approved the release of aid to VSP under a revival package. It is a matter of joy that the Union Cabinet has approved the release of Rs 10,300 crore under the Revival Package, with the special initiative of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. Heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and CM Chandrababu Naidu for once again giving life to the slogan Visakha Ukku Andhrula Hakku, he stated. Sources indicate that Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy may announce the details in the coming days, outlining how the aid will be utilised. However, despite the announcement, VSP employees remain concerned due to the ongoing delay in salary payment. Employees of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited - Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL-VSP) have faced irregular payment of salaries since September 2024. On Sankranti, VSP employees staged a shirtless protest at the main gate demanding release of pending salaries. We have been hearing reports about the Centre announcing an aid of Rs 10,000 Rs 11,000 crore for VSP. Some suggest it will be in bonds, others say it will be given as debt, but there is no clarity. While the State government under the TDP has pushed for more funds, simply sanctioning money is not enough to revive the plant. Merging VSP with SAIL, and allocating captive mines are essential for a sustainable revival, said J Ayodhya Ramu, vice-president of the Steel Workers Federation of India (SWFI). It may be recalled that Visakhapatnam MP M Sribharat met Steel Minister Kumaraswamy in New Delhi in November 2024 to discuss pressing issues faced by VSP. During the meeting, the MP expressed concern over the non-payment of full salaries to employees for over two months, highlighting the hardship faced by workers and the impact on their morale. He urged the Steel Minister to address the issue promptly to ensure the welfare of employees, and the smooth functioning of VSP. In response, Kumaraswamy assured the MP that steps are being taken to resolve the matter, and reiterated the governments commitment to supporting the steel plant and its workforce.

The announcement has not enthused VSP employees, who remain concerned about the delay in payment of their salaries. Salary payments have been irregular for them since September 2024. On Sankranti, VSP employees staged a shirtless protest at the main gate, demanding their pending salaries. We have been hearing reports about the centre announcing aid of Rs 10,00011,000 crore for VSP. Some suggest it will be in bonds. Others say it will be given as debt. There is no clarity. PVTG community defies govt delay, build 3-Kilometre road Jeenabadu
Visakhapatnam: In a display of determination and solidarity, members of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) have by themselves successfully built a three-kilometre gravel road connecting Gummanthi to Dayethi village in Jeenabadu panchayat of Anantagiri mandal in Alluri Sitarama Raju district. Around 200 community members toiled over five days to complete the crucial road in a challenge to government authorities who have kept delaying the road project. Dayethi village is atop a hill and home to 109 families of the Kondu tribal community, the population being approximately 450 individuals. The region includes Peddakota and Pinakota villages, encompassing 11 tribal hamlets with a total population of around 2,000. After many requests and complaints, the Tribal Welfare department had laid a road at a cost of 38 lakh during 201819 fiscal year. The road got washed away following a severe rainfall. In 2022, Panchayat Raj department approved 1.5 crore for a gravel road and provided an additional 9 lakh earmarked for laying the road. Heavy rains washed away this road too. Following continued pursuit of the matter by PVTGs, Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan laid the foundation for a new road on December 22 from Gummanthi to Rachakilam, passing through Reddypalem at Ballagaruvu. He inspected the Dayethi road route and assured that Rachakilam road will be constructed from Gummanthi after completion of the Dayethi route. In follow up of the Deputy CMs promise, officials visited the area but did not take up the road connecting Gummanthi to Dayethi village. Throwing a challenge to government officials, the PVTG community members took the matters into their own hands and laid the road for three kilometres. The entire road length is 12 kilometres from Balagaruvu through Dayethi, Maddarebu, Tunisibu, and other PVTG villages. When we pursued the matter with the panchayat raj department following Pawan Kalyans assurance, officials indicated that funding may be granted in a subsequent phase. Given the delay, we are prepared to undertake the construction ourselves, said Sidari Anand, a member of the Jinubadu panchayat ward. Anand and social activist K. Govinda Rao have asked government officials to follow the example of community members laying part of the road and completing the entire road stretch, highlighting the community's resilience and commitment to improving their living conditions.

Vizanagaram Cops Warn Against Deposit Scam
Visakhapatnam : Vizianagaram SP Vakul Jindal issued a directive on Wednesday about a sophisticated new cybercrime scheme named the 'jumped deposit scam' targeting UPI users. The scam involves criminals making small deposits of up to Rs.5,000 into the victims' accounts, followed by a notification message about the deposit. When unsuspecting users check their balance through UPI and enter their PIN, criminals gain access to their accounts and quickly drain all available funds. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, and this new scheme represents a significant threat to our citizens' financial security. We're seeing increasing cases where people lose their savings within minutes of receiving these deceptive deposits, said SP Vakul Jindal. The SP has issued several safety guidelines asking the public to wait 15 to 30 minutes before checking the balance after receiving an unexpected deposit notification. This allows the scammer's request time to expire. He also suggested to intentionally entering an incorrect PIN to cancel any potentially fraudulent requests. He emphasised that UPI PIN numbers should never be shared with anyone and recommends contacting banks directly to verify any suspicious transactions. Victims of cyber fraud are urged to file complaints within the first hour (golden hour) through the local cyber-crime police station, the cyber-crime portal, or by calling 1930.

J&K incomplete without PoK, terror camps built adjacent to border: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
NEW DELHI: Describing the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) as the crown jewel of India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said PoK is nothing more than a foreign territory to Pakistan. Rajnath Singh said, J&K is incomplete without PoK. The people living there are being deprived of a dignified life. Efforts are being made by Pakistan to mislead and provoke them against India in the name of religion. PoK's land is being used for terrorism. Training camps for terrorists are running and launch pads have been built in the areas adjacent to the border. The Indian government is well aware of the situation. Pakistan will have to put an end to its nefarious designs, he added. The Defence Minister was in Akhnoor, Jammu leading the Armed Forces Veterans' Day celebrations. He was addressing around 1,000 ex-servicemen during an event at Tanda Artillery Brigade. He interacted with the ex-servicemen and expressed gratitude to the Armed Forces personnel, both retired & serving, for their selfless service towards protecting the borders with unmatched bravery, dedication, sacrifice and patriotism. Rajnath Singh also described the Veterans' Day celebrations at Akhnoor as a testament to the fact that Jammu & Kashmir has been and will always remain an integral part of India. The Defence Minister added that 2025 is the diamond jubilee year of the 1965 Indo-Pak war, and India's victory was the result of the valour & sacrifice of the Armed Forces. Pakistan has lost every war it fought with India, whether it was the attack in 1948, the war of 1965, the war of 1971 or the Kargil war of 1999. Pakistan has been promoting illegal infiltration and terrorism since 1965 and has tried to influence the local population in J&K. But the people here have always rejected their intentions. Pakistan still resorts to terrorism, he said. Even today, over 80 per cent of terrorists who come to India are from there. The terrorism would have ended in 1965 only, had the then government not turned the strategic advantages gained on the battlefield into disadvantages. The situation on ground has significantly improved since the abrogation of Article 370, he added. Concluding the address, the Defence Minister reiterated the Government's commitment towards the welfare of the veterans, serving soldiers and their families. Terming it as a top priority, he assured that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) will always work beyond its capacity to ensure the well-being of its soldiers, who remain as the assets to the country even after retirement. He enumerated the steps taken by MoD and underlined that the Government stands with the soldiers of the country at every step. As part of the event, Rajnath Singh hoisted a 108-feet high National Flag and inaugurated the 'Akhnoor Heritage Museum'. The museum is a tribute to the rich history and culture of the region. Located on NH-144A connecting Jammu to Poonch, the museum showcases the rich history and legacy of the region. This is the ninth Armed Forces Veterans' Day which was celebrated at multiple locations across the country on Tuesday. Veterans' rallies and wreath-laying ceremonies were organised at a number of places, including Jammu, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru, Bareilly, Jaipur and Siliguri to pay respects to the ex-servicemen for their selfless duty and reinforce solidarity towards the Next of Kin of these bravehearts. The Defence Minister asserted that the nation will forever remain indebted to the Armed Forces, adding that every Indian holds deep respect for the gallant soldiers. This respect for the soldiers is ingrained in the values of the country, he said, pointing out that the conduct of multiple Veterans' Day events is one such way to show that respect.

Adivasis celebrate Sankranti with unique traditions
Visakhapatnam :Adivasis of ASR and Parvathipuram Manyam districts have a unique way of celebrating Makara Sankranti, the harvest festival of the Telugu-speaking states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Unlike the people in plain areas, the Adivasis, despite their low income, express their love for animals and forests, which sustain them and strengthen their community bonds. They begin the Bhogi festival in the evening, instead of the early morning, by lighting a bonfire. Men and women perform the Dhimsa dance throughout the night until the next day, consuming homemade liquor that keeps their spirits high and energetic. On Sankranti day, they perform puja by decorating Adda Kaya (Bauhinia vahlii) along the roads to their villages. Throughout the day, they greet each other and enjoy their traditional dishes. While people in plain areas consume non-vegetarian dishes on Kanuma, the Adivasis prepare Pulagam using the first harvest of paddy for the season. They feed this dish to their animals, including cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and other domesticated animals. Mixing dry fish in Pulagam is mandatory for all Adivasi sects, said well-known Adivasi activist Rama Rao Dora. He explained that, after Kanuma, people select a convenient day to organize a mass feast in every village, marking the end of the festival. Sankranti is celebrated over the course of a month, with different regions observing a week of activities. Adivasis, unlike people in plain areas, do not follow auspicious timings, he added. Another activist, Rajababu from Chintapalle, noted that Adivasis living near plain areas or towns like Narsipatnam follow more conventional practices influenced by urban culture. We pray and feed animals and offer special pujas to the forest goddesses to mark the Sankranti festival, avoiding extravagant activities, Rajababu said. Meanwhile, a festive atmosphere prevailed across the state, beginning with Bhogi on Monday. Makara Sankranti marks the transition from winter to summer and signifies the Sun's journey toward the Equinox, known as Uttarayanam. Makara Sankranti brings every corner of Andhra Pradesh alive with colorful and grand celebrations. It not only fosters communal bonds but also allows friends and families to reconnect amidst their hectic lives.

Such practices not only disregard traditional customs but also present substantial ecological challenges, the activists said. The cow dung was collected by the Goadharita Prakruti Rythula Sangam from Simhachalams Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Devasthanam Goshala and also the cow dung sourced from inmates at Visakhapatnam Central Jail. The scene of the bonfire was the parking lot along the Visakhapatnam Beach Road. The bonfire highlighted the benefits of burning domestic cow dung. By arrangement Visakhapatnam: Social media has transformed how people connect, communicate and conduct their business. This has given rise to a new wave of influencers from diverse professional backgrounds. While such digital revolution has created unprecedented opportunities for information sharing and marketing, it has introduced complex challenges for the coastal city of Visakhapatnam. The immediacy of social media has proven to be a double-edged sword. Though businesses benefit from instant promotion of events and new ventures, rapid information spread can lead to logistical nightmares. Venues frequently find themselves overwhelmed by unexpected crowds, creating safety concerns and management difficulties. The culture of instant belief and reaction to unverified information is causing growing anxiety within the public, observes V. Narayana Rao, a psychologist at a corporate hospital. This concern is echoed by police officials, with one senior police officer requesting anonymity noting that advance promotions of events through social media has created unprecedented crowd management challenges, contrasting sharply with the more controlled information flow through traditional media. Behind the glossy facade of influencer marketing lies a complex reality. Harish, who runs the popular page Vizag Forever, with over 4,10,000 followers, reveals the financial challenges of content creation. Despite his platform's reach, he struggles with high operational costs and delayed payments. Similar experiences have been shared by Ravi Teja, an M-Tech graduate behind Vizag Insight, who faces payment delays extending up to a year despite his page's success. Ravi explains that brands approach influencers to promote their products or shops on different platforms. Influencers charge money based on the brand for posts and stories. Ravi says he sometimes also posts videos not for influence marketing but out of personal interest. Platform-specific challenges add another layer of complexity. Influencer Priya highlights the stringent monetisation criteria on platforms like YouTube, where even substantial viewership does not guarantee proportional earnings. Business owners and event organisers acknowledge that social media has revolutionised their marketing strategies. Shanti Pannu, a local event manager, shared how influencer partnerships have helped events reach the masses. However, Shanti admitted that rapid spread of information sometimes creates challenges. While we enjoy the profits from increased visibility, it can be tough to manage unexpected crowd surges, she stated. Local authorities are taking steps to address these emerging challenges. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has initiated dialogue with influencers about responsible content creation, particularly regarding environmental issues like plastic usage. On its part, the police department is working towards establishing guidelines for event promotions to prevent misinformation and ensure public safety.

(Photo: DC) Visakhapatnam: Anthakapalli is a serene village nestled within the Rajam mandal of Srikakulam district. The entire village is a close-knit community of around 3,000 residents, who have not celebrated Bhogi for over a century. Even to this day, they do not build or light a Bhogi bonfire of old things that are no longer being used. Anthakapalli villagers stopped lighting the bonfire in memory of a cat that had lost its life in the Bhogi bonfire over a hundred years ago. This long tradition shows their respect and honour for all living beings. Instead, Anthakapalli villagers start celebrating Sankranti from the Bhogi day itself. The village goes on to celebrate the actual Sankranti too. Village sarpanch Vakamulla Chinnam Naayudu told Deccan Chronicle that even families that have moved away from Anthakapalli, start celebrating Sankranti from the Bhogi day itself. Chinnam Naayudu said the choice of unitedly abstaining from Bhogi, often viewed as a symbol of good fortune, makes Anthakapalli unique among villages and towns that embrace bonfires. The village celebrates Sankranti on two days in a spirit of inclusiveness and warmth, inviting relatives and friends to share their bountiful feast. Villagers have kept a century-old custom alive and are passing it on to future generations.
