Few Vacant Spots In Test Team Could Be Filled Via India A Series, Says Panchal
T20 Asia Cup: While the cricketing worlds attention is still fixed on the Men's T20 Asia Cup in the UAE, some curious eyes will be glued to the action in Lucknow when Shreyas Iyer leads a 15-member India A squad against Australia A in first of two multi-day matches starting on Tuesday. The two-game series represents more than just being another India A series its a golden opportunity for some of the players to stake their claims for Test team selection and keep themselves in frame for a long run in the set-up. Former India A and Gujarat batter Priyank Panchal believes the significance of this series cannot be overstated, especially with several Test spots up for grabs ahead of Indias home series against West Indies in October. I think the most important thing about India A series is that you get to play against all those players who play international matches or are going to play them again. So, opponents are obviously well prepared and at the same time, they are also playing for their country. So, they are their country's best player and it is important for all the players to just rise on this occasion because it gives you a lot of confidence when you perform. Obviously, it will be live - so it will give you a lot of confidence in terms of your skill and selection. So, the most important thing about India A series is that it is going to be like this. Australia always come well prepared and generally, their bowlers are very tough. They bowl to you in one area and they test you like anything. So, they are very tough side and from our end, performing against this team is really important. Whoever performs, that player might get to play in the coming series or something because as we all know, there are a few spots left now in this Test team. So, I think those places might get fulfilled from here, said Panchal in an exclusive conversation with IANS. For Iyer, who last donned the Test whites in February 2024 against England in Visakhapatnam, this series offers a vital chance to present his case for selection in the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies starting on October 2 in Ahmedabad. Iyer will be eager to remind selectors of his capabilities with the red ball. I am so grateful to see Shreyas here coming back and I have tweeted about Shreyas that he should be playing the India series, not this one for India A because he has definitely climbed this ladder. But I would say it is important for him also because I think he has been doing really well with performances for the last many years - like this IPL and obviously before that also, Panchal observes. The squad features an intriguing blend of established names and rising stars. First-choice Test players KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj have been included, though only for the second match, starting on September 23. Seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who suffered a knee injury during the Test tour of England, is also included, along with Prasidh Krishna, B Sai Sudharsan and Abhimanyu Easwaran. N Jagadeesan, who was called up for the final Test against England as Rishabh Pants replacement, also makes the cut. I am just looking forward to seeing all the young players - like Sai Sudarshan, (Ayush) Badoni and Devdutt Padikkal are there. So, I am really excited to see them performing on this occasion. It will be in Lucknow - so, you might get red-soil wicket and all the players will come with full preparation. I think these are the players who are very young and we can see them playing for India in the next few years. So I am very much excited to see all these players - like Badoni and Devdutt Padikkal. Shreyas Iyer obviously is an experienced player and captain. But I am also looking forward to seeing him score many runs. Sai Sudharsan has played a Test series in England and his performance there definitely gave him a lot of boost and confidence. So, it is important for him also to just perform at any cost, he said. The bowling department presents a well-balanced attack with seamers Khaleel Ahmed, Yash Thakur, and Gurnoor Brar complemented by spin-bowling all-rounders Manav Suthar, Harsh Dubey, and Tanush Kotian. The inclusion of Khaleel is noteworthy, given India's long-standing search for quality left-arm pace bowling options in Tests. It's a good decision to have that mix of experienced players in a bowling unit. Like Yash Thakur has done well in Ranji Trophy and it is really important to reward all those performers who have been performing really well in Ranji Trophy and domestic circuit. So all the bowlers who have been performing are getting a chance. At the same time, Khaleel Ahmed is there, and in the Indian team, we need a left-handed bowler. So they must be looking for something in Khaleel Ahmed. In all, we need left-handed bowlers to play a vital role because for many years, we have not seen that bowling type in our Test team. Obviously, Arshdeep is playing white-ball cricket, but has not yet played for the Test team. So, it is important to prepare all those players and in that context, this Australia series will be important for everyone - including Khaleel Ahmed and Yash Thakur, he further said. Also Read: LIVE Cricket Score At the same time, I think how to out batters is also important because generally Australians play well against fast bowlers and on Indian wickets, they struggle with spinners. So, I hope wickets are like that in which everyone spinners and fast bowlers get help, and for the batters also. Article Source: IANS

Navy to bolster anti-sub prowess in Indian Ocean
NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy is set to add to its fleet another anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft Androth, second of the eight ASW SWCs (Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft), built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. Calling the step important, a source said, The focus on the anti-submarine warfare is conspicuous with the Navys planned induction of 16 ASW-SWCs, the six P-8I Poseidon, and more UAVs and Drones for the purpose. The Navy commissioned the first of the 16 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), INS Arnala, at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, in June. Eight more ASW-SWC warships are being constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi. The indigenous defence manufacturing augments the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the Navy. The contract for the 16 craft was signed in April 2019, to strengthen Navys Anti-submarine, coastal surveillance and mine laying capabilities. The name Androth, GRSE in its statement said, holds strategic and symbolic significance, derived from the Androth Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, underscoring Indias commitment to safeguarding its vast maritime territories. These ships approx 77 m in length, are the largest Indian Naval warships propelled by a Diesel Engine-Waterjet combination and are equipped with state-of- the art lightweight torpedoes, Indigenous ASW rockets, advanced shallow water SONAR, enabling effective submarine detection and engagement in littoral zones, said GRSE. The worry, as earlier brought out by this newspaper, remains that over the years, Pakistan and China have been adding strength to their capabilities, including the underwater. Importantly, in August, Pakistan inducted its third of the eight Chinese manufactured modern Hangor Class submarines which is Air Independent Propulsion equipped. Meanwhile, the Indian Navy is concerned that its platforms are reaching obsolescence; therefore, the new additions should not only replace the older ones but also increase the overall numbers. The Chinese PLA Navy, with over 360 warships and submarines, has become the largest navy in the world, with an increased presence in maritime bodies around the globe, including the Indian Ocean, while the Indian Navys total fleet strength is over 130. The Indian Navys submarines underwater fighting capabilities, even after the addition of six indigenously manufactured Scorpene-class submarines, are plagued by obsolete boats (submarines). Although new boats have been added and newprojects are in the pipeline, the Navys submarine arm has been plagued by obsolescence and is operating 12 vintage submarines.

Varkala in Unescos tentative heritage list
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Varkala is set for global renown, with its unique natural heritage site making it to the Tentative List of Unescos World Heritage Sites. Famous for its red laterite cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea, Varkala is the only site from Kerala to feature among the seven new Indian entries under the Natural Heritage category. The announcement was made by the Permanent Delegation of India to Unesco in Paris, marking a major milestone for Kerala. If approved, Varkala will join the ranks of Unesco World Heritage sites. Natural heritage sites from across the country such as the Deccan Traps in Maharashtra, St Marys Island in Karnataka, and the Meghalayan Age Caves are some of the latest additions to the tentative list. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) began groundwork for the recognition in 2012, and Varkala was declared a geo-heritage site in 2014. The site has now been included in the Natural Heritage category, which emphasises its geographic and geological significance, said V Ambili, Deputy Director General of GSI Kerala unit. Unesco team will visit site for evaluation process Preservation and conservation will be of utmost importance as unchecked development could jeopardise its future, said Ambili. The GSI had hoped that Varkala would be considered in the mixed category the Natural and Cultural Heritage category. This is a remarkable achievement. But the chances to get the status would have been high if it was included in the mixed category, said Ambili. Ambili noted that the state government and Varkala municipality have a crucial role to play in securing the Unesco tag for Varkala. Meanwhile, the GSI is set to launch another study of the Varkala cliffs next month to develop methodologies and recommendations for protecting the fast-eroding cliff. The announcement was made by the Permanent Delegation of India to Unesco in Paris, marking a major milestone for Kerala. This is going to be a huge challenge for the government. The GSI will extend all possible support to the conservation and preservation initiatives. We will suggest conservation methodologies and the state government will have to implement them, Ambili said. Getting the Unesco World Heritage Tag is going to be a huge process. A Unesco team will also visit the site as part of the evaluation process. With six other Indian sites competing for recognition, the race for World Heritage status is expected to be intense, said Ambili. With the addition of seven more sites, India now has 69 properties on Unescos tentative list 49 under cultural, three under mixed, and 17 under natural categories. Seven in Unesco list Seven properties from India in the tentative list under the Natural Heritage category Deccan Traps at Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar (Maharashtra) Geological Heritage of St Marys Island Cluster (Udupi, Karnataka) Meghalayan Age Caves (East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya) Naga Hill Ophiolite (Kiphire, Nagaland) Natural Heritage of Erra Matti Dibbalu (Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh) Natural Heritage of Tirumala Hills (Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh). Kolkata Port assures support for Nepal cargo movement amid crisis
KOLKATA: Shyama Prasad Mookerjee (SMP) Port, Kolkata, on Tuesday said it will extend all support to trade for smooth cargo movement to Nepal in view of the ongoing crisis in the neighbouring country. Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned amid massive anti-government protests, during which demonstrators vandalised the parliament building and attacked the residences of several top politicians, including President Ramchandra Paudel. SMP Port Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi told PTI that Nepal is a key user of Kolkata port facilities for third-country trade, with most of its cargo moving by rail. We are closely monitoring the situation. So far, there has been no request for special support, but we are always accommodative for any assistance or relaxation for the trade if the need arises due to the unrest, Rahi said. He added that container freight stations with warehousing facilities near the borders of both countries are expected to ensure continuity in operations, and delay in unloading and discharge of Nepal-bound cargo at the port are unlikely. Trade with Nepal is important, though in volume terms its share is in single digits of the port's overall annual cargo. Nepal's transit trade is primarily routed through Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam ports under the India-Nepal Treaty of Transit. India is Nepal's largest trading partner, accounting for about 63 per cent of its overall trade. Bilateral trade stood at around USD 8.02 billion in 2024-25, of which India's exports to Nepal were USD 7.3 billion. Exports from India, including petroleum, iron and steel, automobiles, machinery and cereals, contribute nearly 16 per cent to Nepal's GDP. In FY 2023-24, Nepal exported cardamom, iron sheets, edible oil, juices, plywood and jute, with India absorbing nearly 68 per cent of its outbound shipments.
