Naval helicopter Saaras finds new home in Vizag
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Navys UH-3H helicopter, retired in June 2024 after 17 years of service, was officially installed on RK Beach Road on Wednesday. The helicopter joins an impressive lineup of naval assets on display, including an anti-submarine aircraft and a Sea Harrier fighter plane, as part of the TU-142 Aircraft Museum in Visakhapatnam. Speaking to TNIE, Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) Commissioner KS Viswanathan stated, The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 3 crore. With this project, we aim to offer tourists what it feels like to be inside a UH-3H helicopter. We are also in contact with the Navy to include additional features, such as exhibits detailing the helicopters components and history. The project is expected to be completed in three months, he added. The UH-3H helicopter named Saaras was inducted into the Indian Navy on March 24, 2009, at Indian Naval Ship (INS) Dega under Indian naval air squadron (INAS) 350. The name is derived from the Indian crane (Sarus crane), symbolising strength, grace, and vigilance. Over its service period, it played a pivotal role in special operations, search-and-rescue (SAR) missions, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. Its advanced SAR capabilities proved invaluable during natural disasters, contributing to numerous rescue efforts under challenging circumstances. Brought to India in 2007 along with INS Jalashwa, the Saars became a symbol of Strength, Valour, and Perseverance, as represented by the squadrons crest. It actively contributed to offshore security, logistical support, and safeguarding Indias maritime boundaries. The de-induction ceremony, held on June 28, 2024, at INS Dega, marked the end of its distinguished chapter in Indian Naval Aviation. During the event, Vice-Admiral Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, presented a commemorative plaque to the State government, received by District Joint Collector K Mayur Ashok. Hair dryer shipped to neighbour bursts, Bengaluru woman loses fingers
BAGALKOT: Receiving a parcel containing a hair dryer proved painfully costly for the widow of a deceased soldier in Ilkal city of Bagalkot district on Wednesday. Basamma Yaranal, the wife of Papanna, a soldier who was killed in a short-circuit accident in Jammu and Kashmir in 2017, ended up grievously injuring her fingers, forearms and face after the hair dryer exploded in her hands. Basamma had received a courier addressed to a neighbour, Shashikala, the widow of another deceased soldier. The parcel also bore Shashikalas name and mobile number. However, since she was out of town when it arrived, Shashikala requested Basamma to receive it on her behalf and check its contents. Basamma did as requested, and opened the parcel to find a hair dryer inside. She then tried to demonstrate the device in front of other neighbours by switching it on, when it suddenly exploded with a loud bang, resulting in Basamma losing nine of her fingers, while also severely wounding her forearms and face. Neighbour didnt order hair dryer, reveals probe The explosion was so intense that it caused the victims blood to splatter across her home, leaving neighbours in a state of shock. She was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. Soon, the Ilkal police launched an investigation, which apparently revealed that Shshikala had never ordered a hair dryer, making the situation murkier, and raising more questions about the parcels origins. Accordingly, the police are now probing how the hair dryer, reportedly manufactured in Visakhapatnam, reached Bagalkot, before being couriered to Shashikala. They are also trying to investigate if there was any foul play, while also tracing the order and payment details to determine the source of the alleged explosive device.

Illegal Constructions Mushroom in Hyderabad
A view of the high-rise apartments in Krishnanagar in Visakhapatnam. (Photo: DC) A view of the high-rise apartments in Krishnanagar in Visakhapatnam. (Photo: DC) Hyderabad: The introduction of the Telangana State Building Permission Approval and Self-certification System (TS-bPASS), GHMCs Town Planning wings enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Vigilance & Disaster Management (EV&DM) and the recently-constituted Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) have failed to curb the illegal constructions in the city. Dozens of illegal structures have mushroomed in different parts of the city and continue to increase with every passing day. Interviews with the officials of municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD), and resident welfare associations (RWAs), and those who built illegal structures revealed that there are multiple reasons for illegal structures getting constructed unabated. The expectation to get higher rental income is the prime reason for the illegal constructions. The factors that make it happen are nexus between officials and violators of rules. While the officials want to take action, political intervention stalls it. For instance, if a person owns a plot with an area ranging between 200 square metres and 300 square metres, the buildings height should not cross 10 metres or a maximum of three floors. However in view of good rentals in Hyderabad, the owner typically constructs a five or six-storey building on a 300 square metre plot. There have also been incidents where a 300 square metre plot was developed into a six-floor apartment complex by a builder, with both of them taking equal numbers of illegally constructed flats. There are also a few examples where some property owners, who bought an existing house, are denied permission to construct additional floors, if there is a deviation in the existing ground floor. This also makes people opt for illegal constructions. I bought a house around five years ago, which had only a ground floor. When I want to construct an additional floor, authorities denied permission citing deviations, said a bank employee. Notary lands are also one of the primary reasons for illegal construction in the city. As these land parcels are not registered, they cannot apply for building permission, forcing them to construct buildings illegally. Ayyappa Society, parts of Gayatri Hills in Jubilee Hills, dozens of areas in Old City, where registration is banned, land transactions are done on notary documents.

Telangana: Tribal Farmers Allege Land Grab by Non-Tribals
Visakhapatnam: Tribal farmers of Panasalapadu in Rolugunta mandal of Anakapalli district have accused officials of transferring their agricultural lands in survey numbers 8-1, 6-9, and 6-1 to real estate developers without the consent of their rightful owners. Gemila Chinnabbai of Panasalapadu alleged that former sarpanch of Ratnampet Tamatapu Satyanarayana, who is not an Adivasi, had colluded with other non-tribals and grabbed over 12 acres of agricultural lands of tribal people for real estate purposes. Chinnabbai explained that 10 members of the Gemila Bheemanu Dora family had held land titles and passbooks for the grabbed lands as of 202223. He alleged that during Jagananna Resurvey, YSRC leaders colluded with officials and took titles and passbooks of these lands in the names of former sarpanch Tamatapu Satyanarayana and others. Following a complaint filed with district collector, former RDO H.K. Jayaram of Narsipatnam inspected the contested tribal lands and classified the land given to non-tribals as disputed. Chinnabbai said despite this classification, titles and passbooks issued to non-tribals have remained active, causing worries within the tribal family members who are the true owners. Tribal leaders V.V. Nookaraju and Gammila Gangaraju warned that if titles awarded to non-tribals are not cancelled immediately, they will stage a protest at the district collector's office. CPM district executive member K. Govinda Rao requested district authorities to take swift action in the matter.
Rs 259 Crore Project Announced for Water-Deficient North Vizag
Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has proposed a Rs 259 crore project to augment drinking water supply to localities in northern parts of the city, including Madhurawada, which face a perennial shortage. Disclosing this on Wednesday, GVMC commissioner Dr P. Sampath Kumar said the project has received approval from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana. Dr Sampath Kumar revealed that they have approached the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank affiliate, to secure funding for the first phase of the drinking water project. Interacting with media at the GVMC headquarters, he explained that Visakhapatnam receives 400 million litres per day (MLD) of water, while the actual requirement is 463 MLD. Yeleru Canal supplies 68 per cent of the water, while the remaining amount comes from sources like Gosthani and other projects. The commissioner said all the citys water pumping stations are located in the southern region, while areas like Madhurawada on the northern side, which have witnessed rapid development, face challenges, as water has to be pumped multiple times. To address this issue, GVMC has proposed a new cost-effective project under which water will be pumped from Kanithi Balancing Reservoir (KBR) to Narava Hill, covering a distance of 10 kilometres. From there, water will flow by gravity to Mudasarlova Lake, covering an additional 15 kilometres. This gravity-based system will reduce dependency on pumping and ensure adequate water supply to Madhurawada and other regions. Dr Sampath Kumar said, This initiative will help bridge the city's water deficit and ensure equitable distribution of water throughout Visakhapatnam. Further, apart from meeting the current demand, the project will support the city's future water needs. The commissioner underlined that the new project will be a better option. While there are additional reserves of water in Yeleru Canal, pumping additional water will cost around Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,300 crore annually. Instead, pumping water from KBR and then supplying it by gravity to northern parts of the city is a cost-effective plan, he pointed out.

Coromandel to focus on developing fertilizer value chain amidst geo-political unrests
Chennai: Coromandel International, the fertilizers and crop protection products company of Murugappa Group, is focused on developing a strong fertilizer value chain amidst the disruptions in the global market. The company will reduce import dependence and enhance the raw material sourcing capabilities and invest in backward integration, S Sankarasubramanian, MD & CEO, Coromandel International told Sangeetha G in an interview. 1. The government has been reducing subsidies for fertilizers. The fertilizer subsidy allocation for 2024-25 is Rs 1.64 lakh crore, which is 13 per cent lower than the revised estimate of Rs 1.89 lakh crore for 2024. How is this affecting the sector as well as your company? The government's reduction in fertilizer subsidies, with the allocation for 2024-25 at Rs 1.64 lakh crore (13% lower than the revised estimate of Rs 1.89 lakh crore for 2024), is impacting the sector in multiple ways. The Government of Indias Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) policy, which subsidizes key plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash, plays a vital role in keeping fertilizers affordable for the farming community. The reduction in subsidy rates for Kharif 2024, compared to last year, is largely attributed to the decline in global commodity prices. However, during the first half of the year, the demand fundamentals for the industry remained strong. This includes factors such as above-normal monsoon rainfall, higher reservoir levels, and a correction in Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) which led to improved crop sowing. Additionally, the timely announcement of subsidy rates and subsidy payouts by the government helped the industry plan raw material procurement ahead of time, resulting in improved production numbers for Phosphatic fertilizers. While the geopolitical situation, particularly with China, impacted DAP imports, the industry swiftly adapted by increasing the use of NPK fertilizers. During the Kharif season, NPK consumption rose by 18 per cent, supporting balanced crop nutrition. Sustained availability of fertilizers at reasonable farmgate prices is likely to boost agricultural output, with the first advanced estimates projecting a 6% increase in Kharif foodgrain production, reaching 165 million tons. As a company, Coromandel focuses on promoting balanced nutrition and offering differentiated, value-added products that contribute to improved yields for farmers. These products cater to the growing demand for more efficient and sustainable farming practices, enhancing crop productivity. Coromandel has consistently grown its volumes, and during the Kharif season, our market share has increased from 15 per cent to 17 per cent. 2. How are you strengthening your business in a reducing subsidy scenario? We have focused on developing a strong fertilizer value chain by enhancing our raw material sourcing capabilities and investing in backward integration. Our approach to reducing import dependence has led to the expansion of intermediate capacities and improved infrastructure. In 2019, we increased our phosphoric acid capacity at Visakhapatnam with a second plant, followed by a state-of-the-art sulfuric acid plant in 2023. This year, we laid the foundation for new phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid plants at Kakinada, making all our fertilizer sites backward integrated. Additionally, we have entered mining operations in Senegal to secure a steady supply of rock for our phosphoric acid plants. Our captive power and water generation facilities, alongside these strategic investments, ensure cost-effective operations that meet global standards. With a robust supply chain, diversified sourcing, and long-term contracts for critical raw materials, Coromandel has a competitive edge. This integrated approach makes our operations more sustainable and efficient, even amidst volatile commodity prices. 3. The availability of fertilizers globally has been a major issue since the Russia-Ukraine war. What was the impact of this on your business? The Russia-Ukraine war caused significant supply chain disruptions, leading to price volatility and shortages of key fertilizer raw materials like potash, phosphate, and ammonia. Prices peaked in 2021, making it difficult for the fertilizer industry to maintain production and imports. However, by the second half of 2023, raw material prices began to normalize. Coromandel successfully ran its plants at full capacity, thanks to strategic long-term supply contracts and recent investments in intermediate capacities. Additionally, the timely subsidy support from the Government of India helped ensure efficient sourcing of raw materials and continuous fertilizer supply to farmers during this period of volatility. 4. In H1, the revenues of the company were down. Can you explain the reasons behind this? Revenue in H1 was impacted by commodity price volatility and a corresponding reduction in subsidy rates. However, Coromandels fertilizer business grew by 7% in volume, with plants operating close to full capacity. Additionally, the company saw strong performance in its Crop Protection business, driven by new products and higher volumes in both domestic and international markets. The companys 800 retail stores also contributed positively, with strong engagement in the farming community and technology-driven interventions. 5. Coromandel had commissioned a Nano DAP plant in Kakinada. How do you see the future of nano fertilizers in India? How are you preparing yourself for this opportunity? The future of Nano DAP in India is promising, with increasing focus from both the government and industry on efficient farming practices. Nano fertilizers, such as the Nano DAP produced at Coromandel's Kakinada plant, enhance nutrient efficiency, offering optimal delivery and absorption for plants. This technology has the potential to replace conventional fertilizers while improving crop yields. At Coromandel we have invested in the Research and Development of Nano Fertilisers through a team of agile scientists at our R&D centre Monash Academy at IIT Bombay where Gromor Nano DAP was developed. Extensive field trials at over 3,000 locations across India have demonstrated its effectiveness across various crops. Collaborations with leading ICAR Institutes and agricultural universities have further validated its efficacy. We have also established a Nano Technology Centre in Coimbatore to advance nano applications in agriculture. Our sales team is actively educating farmers on the benefits of nano fertilizers, and we are leveraging our existing distribution network to train farmers on their use. We are planning to commercialize Nano Urea and are working on other variants to expand our offering. 6. Coromandel has been at the forefront of bio-pesticides. Tell us something about the benefits of this and your plans in this segment? Bio-pesticides play a key role in integrated pest management (IPM), helping farmers reduce reliance on conventional pesticides. They are eco-friendly, minimizing soil and water contamination, and offer safe and effective alternatives for crop protection with a lower ecological footprint. Coromandel offers a range of biopesticides, including Azadirachtin-based products, which are produced at the worlds largest manufacturing facility in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. We are also setting up a captive neem plantation to enhance our sourcing capabilities. Through fermentation and microbial R&D, along with collaborations with research institutes, we are expanding our product portfolio to include bio-fertilizers, microbial crop protection solutions, and plant-based extracts. These products have received positive feedback from customers, and we are using our Mana Gromor Retail stores to promote IPM practices. Additionally, Coromandel is the largest player in the organic fertilizer market, with a sales volume of around 2 lakh tons. 7. Tell us more about your export business, especially products like mancozeb and azadirachtin. Coromandels export business primarily focuses on Crop Protection and Bio-pesticide products, which are sold in approximately 80 countries, with strong presence in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. We hold around 850 product registrations globally. Mancozeb, a broad-spectrum fungicide, is one of our flagship products and a key contributor to export revenues. Azadirachtin, a biopesticide derived from neem seed, is exported to developed markets such as the US, Canada, and Europe. We are focused on expanding our global footprint, particularly in Brazil and Southeast Asia, and have established subsidiaries in the Philippines and Vietnam. In the biologicals segment, we are exploring strategic partnerships in developed markets to expand our portfolio. Our proposed Multi-Product Plant in Ankleshwar, dedicated to new-generation molecules, will cater to export market demands, with product registrations already in progress.

Odisha Police trace lodge murder accused in prison of Kerala
BERHAMPUR: Nearly a year after the decomposed body of a 35-year-old woman was found in a lodge in Ganjams Baidyanathpur, Berhampur police has solved the murder mystery by tracing the accused in a jail of Kerala. Berhampur SP Sarvana Vivek M said the murder accused, Sameedmon AS (42), was lodged in a Kerala jail in connection with an NDPS case. A team of Baidyanathpur police brought Sameedmon on a two-day remand to Odisha on Monday. On Tuesday, the accused was taken to the lodge where he recreated the scene of the murder in presence of police. Sameedmon, a resident of Kerala, also revealed the chilling details of his crime. The SP said the body of Kamanapalli Krishna Veni of Visakhapatnam was found in the lodge in a decomposed state on November 25, 2023. On being questioned, the lodge manager said Veni accompanied by a man had booked the room two days back. When the man went missing without paying the rent, the lodge staff reached the room and found the woman lying dead on the bed. Subsequently, police sent the body for autopsy and registered a murder case basing on the circumstantial evidence. During investigation, police identified the man as Sameedmon but could not trace him. Last week, the cops came to know that the accused was lodged in a Kerala jail after being arrested in a NDPS case around four months back. A team of Baidyanathpur police then went to Kerala and brought Sameedmon to Odisha. The SP said Veni and the accused were divorced but living together. During mid-2023, the womans 19-year-old son from her first marriage was arrested by Visakhapatnam police in an NDPS case. Believing that her son was arrested because of Sameedmon, who was also involved in illegal drug trade, Veni used to fight with the accused regularly. Fearing that Veni might tell police about his involvement in drug trade, Sameedmon hatched a plan to eliminate her. The accused brought the woman to Berhampur on some pretext and killed her in the lodge. After committing the crime, he returned to Kerala and became involved in ganja trade till he was nabbed by police around four months back.

CM Chandrababu Naidu Says Polavaram to Be Ready by 2027
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced a schedule in the state assembly on Tuesday to complete the Polavaram irrigation project works by 2027. Naidu also reiterated his ambition to take up interlinking of rivers of Godavari and Krishna to reach the water to Nagarjuna Sagar and to Bollapalli and Penakacherla. This, he said, would involve a cost of Rs 70,000 crore, and ensure water for every acre of land. This would also help avoid drought in Andhra Pradesh, the CM said while taking part in a short discussion on Polavaram and other irrigation projects in the state. Naidu said the works on the new diaphragm wall would begin in January 2025 and this would be completed by March 2026. Construction of the earth-cum-rock-fill dam gap-1 will be completed by February 2026 and December 2027. He said the works on the D-Wall and the ECRF dam would be taken up simultaneously. The dam height would be 45.72 metres. The whole project would cost around Rs 55,000 crore. Naidu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union minister for Jal Sakthi CR Patil for sanctioning Rs 12,157 crore for execution and planned completion of the Polavaram project in two years. He dwelt at length on the history of the Polavaram project since 1941. It was initially planned as a storage reservoir on the Godavari river to be built at a cost of Rs 129 crore. In 1981, then chief minister T Anjaiah laid the stone for the project. Naidu said Amaravati and Polavaram were being considered as two eyes of AP, and felt the need to develop the states long seacoast. He explained how he prevailed upon the BJP-led NDA government in 2014 to issue an ordinance for merger of seven agency mandals of Telangana into AP to help take up the Polavaram project without facing any trouble from Telangana. Naidu said that in 2014-19, We executed the Poavaram project to the extent of 72 per cent and even achieved a Guinness record for taking up 32,215 cubic meters of concrete works to lay the spill channel. He said, If our government continued to be in saddle after 2019, we could have completed the Polavaram project by 2020-21. The chief minister criticised the previous government for its failure to execute the project properly. It executed the project to the extent of only 3.84 per cent, he said and slammed it for the reverse tendering and for the change of the agency despite advice against it from the Polavaram Project Authority. He said, With no agency and officials to take care of the project for several months, the D-wall got damaged. The IIT, Hyderabad, had come up with a report to this effect. The chief minister told the house, Based on advice from experts, we are going to erect a new D-wall, which would cost Rs 990 crore. Once the Polavaram project is executed at a cost of Rs 55,000 crore including the cost for head works, land acquisition and resettlement and rehabilitation, it would help generate a new ayacut of 7.20 lakh acres and stabilize the additional ayacut in 24 lakh acres, with 80 tmc-ft of water going to Krishna river and 23.44 tmc-ft to the Visakhapatnam steel plant besides generation of 960 mw of hydro electric power. On the ambitious plan of interlinking rivers and ensuring water to every acre in the state, Naidu said that given the huge cost involved, it would be good if the Centre and the state government in public-private partnership mode could execute the project, lines similar to erection of national highways. The private agency involved in the project could be given the right to collect a toll for recovery of the money spent, for a period of 20 to 25 years, he said.

VISAKHAPATNAM: A shocking incident has emerged at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in GM Kothuru village of G Madugula mandal in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, where the principal (special officer) allegedly cut the hair of several girl students as punishment for arriving late to school. The incident occurred on November 15 and came to light on Monday, sparking widespread outrage from parents and locals. Reports indicate that as many as 15 students arrived late for the school prayer session on Karthika Pournami. As punishment, principal, Sai Prasanna, reportedly made the girls stand under the sun during the prayer. Later, she allegedly trimmed the hair of several students despite their requests not to do so. Southern Naval Command to lead 'sea vigil' coastal defence drill with CRPF support
KOCHI: As part of a national-level exercise coordinated by the Indian Navy to validate Indias maritime defence and security capabilities, the Southern Naval Command will organise a coastal defence exercise Sea Vigil along the coasts of Kerala and Lakshadweep on November 20 and 21. The Joint Operations Centre of the Navy will coordinate the operation in association with 16 agencies in Kerala including the Coast Guard, Coastal Police and the fisheries department. This exercise is aimed at validating and enhancing measures adopted to bolster coastal defence. Sea Vigil, coordinated by the Indian Navy, is a national-level exercise that provides a holistic appraisal of Indias maritime defence and security capabilities. Similar exercises will be organised by the naval commands at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Andaman simultaneously, which will be coordinated by the naval headquarters, said Captain S Omanakuttan, in charge of safety and security, at a media briefing held at the Kochi Naval Base. The Joint Operations Centre (JOC) in Kochi was set up as the nodal centre to coordinate with all coastal security stakeholders in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. IT is equipped with all facilities to monitor the coastline. The fourth edition of Sea Vigil for Kerala and Lakshadweep will be coordinated by Southern Naval Command Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Vice Admiral V Srinivas. The exercise will provide an opportunity to assess the preparedness of all maritime security agencies and to identify their strengths and weaknesses, said JOC Officer-in-Charge Commander Krishnadas. As the first phase, a coastal defence and security readiness evaluation has been launched, which will conclude on Tuesday, he said. The evaluation will audit infrastructure, assets and standard operating procedures available with each stakeholder involved in coastal security. During the second phase, simulated attacks will be carried out at select Vital Areas and Vital Points on November 20 and 21. The exercise will witness enhanced preparedness, response mechanism, surveillance capabilities and coordination between all the security agencies, Krishnadas said. The 590km-long coastline of Kerala has been divided into four zones for the exercise. Kerala has one major port and 17 minor ports, apart from 204 notified fish landing centres and 43 non-notified fish landing centres. The agencies will use the help of fishermen in gathering intelligence. There will be two forces involved in the operation. The Red Force will be the infiltrators who will try to attack coastal assets like ports, oil rigs, single point moorings, cable landing points and critical infrastructure. The Blue Force will represent the national security force trying to foil such attacks. Both teams will have their own strategy. Numerous meetings and interactive sessions have been conducted to ensure seamless coordination between the Navy and the 21 agencies involved in the operation, Omanakuttan said.
Visakhapatnam police to deploy AI-powered traffic management system
Visakhapatnam: The city police are set to revolutionize traffic management with the implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI) system that will enhance both traffic control and crime prevention capabilities. The pilot project will leverage AI technology to identify criminals and track traffic violators. The system is designed to automatically issue challans for violations and send immediate alerts to the nearest Station House Officer (SHO) in case of accidents or disturbances on the road. In a conversation with the Deccan Chronicle, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K Praveen Kumar revealed that the department has initiated a pilot project to integrate AI technology into the city's traffic management infrastructure. He elaborated on the integrated nature of the system, stating that it will include a comprehensive database of known criminals. When an individual with a criminal record crosses a designated signal point, the AI will recognize their face and promptly notify police officials. This feature aims to act as a deterrent against criminal activities and enhance public safety. The AI-driven traffic management system will also feature intelligent traffic lights that adapt their timing based on real-time traffic conditions. This innovation is expected to improve vehicle throughput and significantly reduce waiting times at intersections. He also briefed about the Challan process, stating that the AI-powered system will automatically generate and send challans (traffic tickets) to violators while simultaneously alerting the nearest Station House Officer (SHO) about accidents or roadside altercations. As part of the implementation process, various companies are being consulted to conduct ground reports on optimal locations for camera installations and signal placements. Once these reports are evaluated, the best recommendations will be forwarded to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and subsequently to the state government for final approval. Ravi Eswarapu, CEO of AI Skill Hub at Andhra University, highlighted additional benefits of the system. If someone involved in criminal activities moves from Hyderabad to Vizag, the system can detect their presence through traffic cameras and alert the nearest control room, he said. The technology will also automate the detection of various traffic violations, including triple riding, red light violations, and helmet law infractions. While the system promises improved safety and efficiency, he highlighted some considerations for the public. Vehicle owners will be held responsible for any violations committed while their vehicles are being used by others, emphasizing the importance of responsible lending practices. He further emphasized that the initiative represents a significant step forward in urban management, combining traffic control with law enforcement capabilities. Despite potential adjustment challenges for drivers, authorities believe the system's benefits in enhancing public safety and reducing crime rates will ultimately outweigh any initial difficulties.
Araku Valley's stunning Valisalu flower bloom masks farming challenges
Visakhapatnam: From October to January, the picturesque Araku Valley becomes a huge attraction to tourists because of its mesmerising bloom of Valisalu flowers that give Niger seeds oil. This natural spectacle paints the landscape in vibrant hues, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere that lures visitors from near and far. While the influx of tourists benefits the region economically, it casts a shadow over local farmers' challenges. Cultivating Valisalu flowers means crossing several hurdles. Shortage of seeds is one. Farmers undertake arduous journeys to neighbouring Orissa to buy seeds. They face the problem of poor-quality seeds. This adversely impacts the yield. Dr Koiba Joga Rao, a scientist from the Regional Agriculture Research Station Chintapalli, told Deccan Chronicle, We supply Niger seeds free to farmers through the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP). Normally, the seeds are not supplied free of cost. Challenges continue even after seed procurement. The absence of local mills capable of extracting oil from Niger flower seeds is a major constraint. Lack of processing facilities is another problem in a region that boasts of an abundance of flowers. Traders from Orissa take advantage of this situation. They raise the seed prices, putting additional strain on the farmers' income. Gaduthuri Ram Gopal, president of the AP wing of the Indian Adivasi Federation, remarked, While the region's natural beauty attracts tourists and generates seasonal revenue, it raises critical questions about sustainable agricultural practices and fair trade. The dual nature of Araku Valley's economy -- balancing tourism and agriculture -- requires a more integrated approach that supports local farmers and enhances their livelihoods. Addressing these issues, a leader of the Girijana Cooperative Corporation, Kidari Sraawan Kumaar said, This is crucial for the long-term prosperity of Araku Valley. Encouraging the establishment of local oil mills and ensuring the availability of high-quality seeds can empower farmers, enabling them to benefit fairly from their labour and the tourism boom. As the Valisalu flowers continue to draw visitors, the story of Araku Valley will be incomplete without acknowledging and addressing the struggles of those who cultivate the essence of its beauty. So, the GCC will look into the matter and take appropriate action, he added.

Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR) has raised concerns regarding the challenges faced by students in registering for the newly issued Automatic Permanent Academic Account Registration (APAR) cards. This initiative, launched by the Central Government under the slogan One Nation, aims to streamline academic records for students from kindergarten to postgraduate levels across India. Gondu Sitaram, a member of the APSCPCR, emphasized the urgent need for officials from various government departments to address the difficulties arising from a lack of coordination and delays in processing. He highlighted that there is a noted scarcity of Aadhaar centers in several districts, which complicates the correction process for these documents. In response to these ongoing challenges, he stated that the APSCPCR has been receiving consistent complaints from affected families and urged immediate action from district collectors, education officers, municipal commissioners, and Aadhaar officials to facilitate smoother registration processes. AP: School officer cuts hair of girl students for missing morning pledge, sparks outrage
Visakhapatnam: Special officer of KGV school in G Madugula mandal of ASR district cut the hair of girl students in a bid to discipline them. This controversial incident has sparked outrage in the State. The officer cut the hair of 18 female students at G. Madugula KGBV Junior College Hostel as punishment for missing the morning pledge ceremony. According to reports, the incident occurred on November 15 when several second-year BIPC students arrived late for the morning pledge due to water unavailability at the Kasturba Gandhi Girls' Vidyalaya hostel on Kartika Purnami day. Special Officer Sai Prasanna, angered by the absence of 23 students, initially made them stand in the sun as punishment before proceeding to cut the hair of 18 students during the lunch break. When confronted about the incident, which came to light after students complained to their parents, the special officer attempted to justify the actions by claiming the students were punished for walking around with their hair down. Parents and student unions have united in their condemnation of the incident, demanding immediate action against school officials. They argue that the administration has resorted to degrading punishment methods instead of addressing basic infrastructure issues like water scarcity at the facility.

Vizag: Fishermen Protest Illegal Use of Ring Nets
Visakhapatnam: Fishing communities in coastal areas are protesting the illegal use of ring nets by some fishermen. Despite an official ban and numerous interventions by authorities, the use of ring nets by some fishermen poses a serious threat to our livelihood and hurts the ecological balance of the region's marine environment, the protesters say. Protests have erupted in Yendada, Bheemili, Moolapalem, Vasavanipalem, Uppada, Mangawanipeta and Nagamayyapalem stretches. This caused tension in the community, leading to altercations between rival sides. Local fisherman Gopal Rao said, There are fights and threats, but what can we do? We have to protect our way of life. We urge officials to strictly enforce the ban. Until this illegal action stops, the fight will continue. The issue dates back to 2014, when unrest erupted within the fishing community and the authorities intervened to restore calm. By year 2020, the dispute came to the fore again. Traditional fishermen went and filed a case in the high court, seeking action against owners of 90 ring nets operating in the district. In response, the fisheries department reported that only 13 ring nets had proper licences. The court ruled that others must stop using ring nets immediately and that the existing licences should not be renewed. The court also restricted the use of ring nets to a range of 8km until the time the permits expired. This helped restore peace. In the past three months, traditional fishermen have observed the use of ring nets. They met district joint collector Mayur Ashok and presented a complaint. Joint director of the fisheries department, P Lakshmana Rao, issued strong warnings to those illegally using ring nets. He said the department, in cooperation with the Marine Police, would monitor such activities. If rule violations are detected, the nets will be seized. However, he said monitoring beyond 50km from the shore presents significant challenges. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Rao said, To enhance our monitoring capabilities, we propose installing transponders on fishing boats. We are even ready to provide these transponders for free to ensure compliance. Traditional fisherman V Yellaji said, More vigorous enforcement and stricter penalties for violators are needed. Without strong action from the authorities, our efforts to protect the marine environment and sustain our livelihoods will be undermined.

Plea for Road Llink, Boosipadu Villager Writes to Prez
Visakhapatnam : In a heartfelt appeal, Keringi Appalaraju, a resident of remote Busipadu hilltop village, has called upon President Droupadi Murmu to visit his community to understand their dire situation firsthand. This plea follows a harrowing incident on Saturday when Appalaraju's 12-year-old son, K. Janibabu, fell unconscious. In a desperate bid for medical help, Appalaraju and his family carried Janibabu in a 'doli' for three km from Boosipadu to nearby Kariveshu village before hiring a private auto to transport him to S. Kota Hospital. The challenging journey underscored the significant accessibility issues faced by the residents of Boosipadu. There is no road connecting their village to Kariveshu, and this lack of infrastructure forces patients to be transported down the hill on 'doli' before reaching medical facilities. Appalaraju stressed the urgency of their situation, saying, Our President is a tribal woman, and she should visit our area to understand the issues we face firsthand. He highlighted that Rupees 44 lakh of GSP funds have been sanctioned under the MGNREGA for constructing a road from Krishnapuram to Boosipadu village. However, the Sivalingapuram railway station in Krishnapuram prohibits heavy vehicles from crossing the railway tracks, rendering Boosipadu inaccessible by this route. Appalaraju expressed frustration over the ineffective use of allocated funds, stating, Building a road from Krishnapuram to Boosipadu serves no purpose to our village. The government must plan a proper road that connects Boosipadu via Kariveshu from the Gumma Panchayat to improve accessibility and to address our needs. This plea for immediate intervention and proper infrastructure planning highlights the daily struggles faced by the residents of Boosipadu.

She highlighted that the Union Home Department had previously confirmed a 99% protection rate for women during the Jagan administration. She also criticized the current government's handling of women's safety issues, citing recent incidents including a teacher's assault on a student's mother in Vizianagaram, harassment of an RTC female conductor, and an attack on a young woman in Pedagantyada. She expressed particular concern over the deactivation of the Disha app, a women's safety application implemented by the previous government.
