Ready To Give Our 100%, Say Harman, Smriti, And Jemimah As 50-day Countdown For ODI World Cup Starts
ODI World Cup: After losing the finals of the 2017 edition and finishing fifth in 2022, India women's team captain Harmanpreet Kaur, her deputy Smriti Mandhana, and top batter Jemimah Rodrigues know that hopes and aspirations can run into major hurdles in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup. So, they are not talking big on the upcoming 2025 edition of the competitions, but are confident of giving their 100 per cent in the event, which India will be co-hosting with its neighbour, Sri Lanka. Though this will be the fourth time that India will be hosting the event, the players are aware that things are different from the previous occasions and of how the game has transformed both on the field and off-field too. The 2017 edition, in which India lost to England in the final, has really galvanised women's cricket in India, with the team getting a grand reception despite the heartbreaking defeat. The Women's Premier League (WPL) has further boosted the stature of the women's game in the country, and the upcoming games in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup are expected to attract huge crowds when the matches are played in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Indore, and Colombo in Sri Lanka. The Indian players are hoping to feed on this groundswell of support from their fans and hope to go all the way. Both skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana spoke about how important the fans' support will be for them and said they will try to feed on that to go all the way. Playing in front of the home crowd, that is always special, and hopefully you know this time we will give 100%, said Harmanpreet Kaur Smriti Mandhana concurred with her skipper and said the fans' blessings will mean a lot to all of them. The World Cup is at home, and I know the fans are going to be there. I just want to tell them that I just hope that you all come in large numbers to support us. We don't have to tell it, you all will come, and your blessings mean the world to us, and that's all we need. We promise you that the Indian women's cricket team will give its heart and soul out during the World Cup. We will do whatever we can to get the desired result, said Mandhana. Harman is also reminded of her sensational knock of 171 not out off 115 balls against the mighty Australia in the semifinal that paved the way for India's 36-run win and sealed a place in the final. I mean, that match was really special to me and special to the entire women's cricket. A lot of things changed, personally in my life and especially in women's cricket, also because at that time I didn't really realise what happened, because at that time I was totally off from social media. But we came back to India, and even though we lost the World Cup, you know, the number of people who are waiting for us to welcome us, I think that was something very special. I think that was a very special feeling, said Harman, who will be playing her fifth ODI World Cup. Jemimah, too, has fond memories of the 2017 World Cup, but from the other side of the rope -- as a fan, reaching the Mumbai airport at 5.30 am along with her Mumbai U-18 teammates to welcome the team. I remember that all these people, they were very tired and at the same time disappointed because they were so close, yet it felt like so far. And they walked out of the airport thinking that nobody was going to be there. But at 5:30 AM the Mumbai airport was packed with media and crowds. People right now would think that's normal. But at that time, for women's sport, it wasn't, she said. This will be the first ODI World Cup for Jemimah Rodrigues, and the batter said she was looking forward to it. Harman, Smriti, and Jemimah said they will be taking a lot of confidence from their recent series triumph in England, when they won both the T20I and ODI series. Well, we were not surprised with the results because we knew, you know. The kind of preparation we have done, we knew that we could do this easily. I think that was something we have been working really hard for. But I think at the same time we kept things very simple and we knew that, you know, if we play cricket we can easily win any series or any. We were only talking about what more we can win or how we can improve ourselves. Well, we were not surprised with the results because we knew, you know. The kind of preparation we have done, we knew that we could do this easily. Also Read: LIVE Cricket Score The players will soon get into preparation mode as the trophy will go on a tour of all the venues in Delhi and Mumbai. The ICC will, for the first time, also take it to some schools to help the next generation of talent get a feel of the World Cup. Article Source: IANS

Australian Army Chief set for five-day visit to India to deepen strategic partnership
NEW DELHI: In a continuation of the high-level exchanges between India and Australia, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, Chief of the Australian Army, will undertake an official visit to India from 10th to 14th August. Lt Gen Stuart will engage in high-level discussions with General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, Indian Army and other senior officials of the Ministry of Defence, said the Indian Army. The Indian Army said this reaffirms he growing depth of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, particularly in the military domain, as both nations work to uphold a stable and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific. The Army said, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart's visit to India reflects the Indian Army's rising profile as a credible partner in the Indo-Pacific and its commitment to shaping collective preparedness through meaningful cooperation. As both Armies engage in frank and forward-looking discussions, this visit is expected to consolidate operational synergy and strategic trust-laying the groundwork for the next phase of Army-to-Army collaboration in the region, the Army added. India and Australia maintain a dynamic and evolving defence partnership, reinforced by active institutional mechanisms that ensure sustained engagement and strategic coordination. Before General Stuart, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles was on an official visit to India from June 3 to 4 during which he held a bilateral meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi . The two leaders discussed regional security, defence cooperation, and measures to jointly counter terrorism. Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan was on an official visit to Australia in March this year. The CDS engaged in wide-ranging discussions with senior officials from the Australian Department of Defence and military leadership of the Australian Defence Force during his visit. The two countries have important dialogues, meetings and military exercises scheduled for this year. The most recent 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue was held in New Delhi in November 2023, with the next edition scheduled in Australia in 2025, underscoring the regular high-level dialogue between the two nations. Additionally, the Defence Policy Talks, conducted in July 2023 in Australia, provided a timely platform for reviewing ongoing collaboration and identifying new areas for joint initiatives. These dialogues, along with working groups and staff-level talks, continue to drive forward-looking cooperation in capability development, logistics, interoperability, and strategic posturing in the Indo-Pacific. From this robust foundation, the Indian Army-Australian Army bilateral engagement has emerged as a key pillar in the growing military partnership. Operational cooperation between the Indian Army and the Australian Army has grown steadily over recent years, marked by increasing complexity, scale, and strategic relevance of joint exercises and deployments. Exercise AustraHind, launched in 2016, remains the flagship bilateral field training exercise between the two Armies. Focused on counter-terrorism, close-quarter battle, and joint tactical operations, it has seen active participation from the Indian Army, alongside Australia's 1st Brigade. The next edition is scheduled in Australia in November 2025, further strengthening interoperability under realistic terrain scenarios. In addition, the Indian Army has been an active participant in Exercise Talisman Sabre, a multinational exercise hosted by Australia. The Indo-Pacific Endeavour (IPE-22) also witnessed significant engagement by the Indian Army, particularly during the Visakhapatnam leg, where both sides conducted joint professional exchanges and field discussions on HADR, jungle warfare, and counter-terrorism operations. On the training and institutional cooperation front, both Armies have maintained a consistent and meaningful exchange through premier military courses and academic programmes. Indian Army officers regularly participate in Australian courses such as the Australian Defence and Strategic Studies Course, Army Command and Staff Course, and the Combined Defence Intelligence and Research Analysis Course. In parallel, Australian officers are nominated for Indian institutions including the National Defence College (NDC), Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), and the Higher Defence Orientation Course (HDOC). An Instructor Exchange Programme conducted at the Indian Army's Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School, Vairengte, further deepened tactical and instructional integration. In addition, regular Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs) have enriched doctrinal understanding and contributed to enhanced interoperability between the two forces. The Alumni Connect, held in March 2024 under the theme 'Dosti and Mateship in Defence', further nurtures bonds among officers trained at premier institutions like NDC and DSSC, ensuring continuity of trust and familiarity across ranks and generations. One of the most visionary initiatives was the India-Australia Young Officers Exchange Programme, conceptualised by late General Bipin Rawat and launched during the 2022 Prime Minister-level virtual summit. This initiative allows young officers from both Armies to train together, experience field environments, and understand each other's operational ethos and an investment in future leadership synergy. The Army-to-Army Staff Talks, first initiated in 2010, have evolved from a biennial to an annual engagement since 2016, reflecting the growing frequency and significance of operational dialogue. This platform also serves as a vital forum for discussing bilateral strategic issues, enhancing mutual understanding and coordination on matters of regional and global relevance. Defence industry engagement, too, is finding resonance with the Indian Army. Indian firms have exported key platforms to Australia in significant amounts, showcasing indigenous capabilities in tactical ISR, mobility, and protected systems. Collaboration between the Army Design Bureau and Australia's Digger Works is being explored to jointly develop combat-tested, cost-effective solutions suited to contemporary battlefield needs.

Remote centres outside Kerala force candidates to drop out of NEET-PG
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/KOCHI: With just two days remaining for the National Eligibility Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET-PG), on August 3, many medical graduates are shocked to get examination centres outside the state in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Many candidates had carefully chosen cities near their residences as preferred centres during the application process. However, many were stunned to be assigned locations hundreds of kilometres away. Im not appearing for the exam this time. Ive been allotted a centre in Telangana, and Im eight months pregnant. The travel and stay costs are too high for me and my family, said Dr Kavitha (name changed), a candidate from Thiruvananthapuram. Other young mothers in my batch are opting out too. Weve paid Rs 4,000 for the application, and now were forced to abandon the attempt. Surveys conducted by several junior doctor associations revealed that approximately 1,000 applicants from Kerala were given centres outside the state. The uncertainty over exact venue details only disclosed two days prior to the exam on July 31 adds to the logistical nightmare. If I had received Kollam as my centre, I could reach anywhere nearby without issues. But with a location like Visakhapatnam, I dont even know how close the centre will be to a hotel. How do we plan ahead? said Dr Ashik Basheer, state president of the General Practitioners Association. Candidates have also voiced concerns over inflated travel and accommodation prices. Although NBEMS guarantees at least one exam centre in every district, available slots fill up quickly due to the 20,000 applicants from Kerala. When submitting the application, candidates can choose a preferred city, and if its unavailable, the system assigns a centre near their home address, though theres no guarantee. Historically, slots were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, but this time, candidates were shocked by what they believe is a random allocation. Dr Vivek K B, state secretary of the IMA Junior Doctors Network, Kerala, urged NBEMS to reopen the portal for centre change, allowing candidates to select more practical options. In the past, the Board cited a shortage of test centres as the reason for allocating centres outside the state. However, in previous years, changes to exam centres were made through court interventions or petitions from MPs. Last year, the exam was held in two shifts. This year, the exam has been postponed following an SC order directing NBEMS to conduct the exam in a single shift. Calls and emails sent to NBEMS by TNIE have gone unanswered. Allotment issues NBEMS guarantees minimum 1 exam centre in every dist but slots fill up fast due to 20K applicants from Kerala While applying, candidates can choose a city, and if its unavailable, the system assigns a centre near their home address Slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis
