SA Vs AFG Was One Of The Best Games In World Cup History: Irfan Pathan
World Cup: Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan reflected on the high-octane contest between South Africa and Afghanistan in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, a match that required two Super Overs to decide the outcome and called it one of the best games in World Cup history. South Africa and Afghanistan produced a stunning thriller, with the match tied at 187 in regulation and again in the first Super Over, forcing an unprecedented second Super Over. The Proteas finally prevailed by four runs after posting 23, with Afghanistan falling just short despite three sixes from Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the decider super over. It was one of the best games of this World Cup, no doubt about it. In fact, one of the best games in World Cup history, easily among the top five. Two super overs and high drama throughout. There were no-balls, free hits, run-outs, missed yorkers, everything you could ask for. Bowlers tried to bowl yorkers under pressure and missed, which happens to everyone. When they used pace, they went for runs; when they bowled slower balls, they created trouble and picked wickets. Keshav Maharajs last ball in the second super over was exceptional. He stayed away from Gurbaz, bowled the wide line, and backed himself even after bowling a wide earlier. That showed his class and temperament. A truly thrilling contest, Pathan told JioHotstar. The evening game saw West Indies clinch a 30-run win over England at Mumbais Wankhede Stadium. Sherfane Rutherfords unbeaten 76 powered a total of 196/6, and a spin trio led by Gudakesh Motie restricted England to 166 during their chase. Sam Currans 43 wasnt enough as the Windies sealed their second straight Group C win. Pathan credited the West Indies spin trio for laying the foundation of the win. Spin it to win it, that mantra really worked for West Indies. Three spinners came into the game straight away, and that made the difference. I was really impressed with the way Roston Chase bowled. Being an off-spinner, getting Jos Buttler out was huge. Gudakesh Motie showed outstanding skill as well. Against right-hand batters, he used the finger spin effectively, and the way he got Harry Brook out was brilliant. It was a very clinical performance from West Indies. The catching was excellent too, especially Rovman Powells outstanding catch. West Indies have sometimes lagged in fielding, but we saw some really good fielding in this match, he said. Pathan also underlined the all-round value of Roston Chase, whose contribution came at a crucial juncture in the match. First of all, his batting was crucial. When he came in at number four, West Indies were in trouble after losing two early wickets. He provided stability and scored over 30 runs, which was very important. As a right-arm off-spinner, getting Jos Buttler out is never easy. Buttler had hit a big shot the ball before, but Chase changed his length, gave him no room, and got him out well inside the boundary. What I really liked was his planning. Against right-hand batters, he kept changing his line, sometimes targeting the heel, while sometimes going wide outside the off stump. Piyush Chawla, meanwhile, praised Sherfane Rutherfords composure under pressure against England, noting that his knock added crucial runs to the total. First of all, his batting was crucial. T20 WC: Happy To Just Get Over The Line, Says WI Skipper Hope After Win Over England
T20 World Cup: West Indies captain Shai Hope praised spinner Gudakesh Motie and all-rounder Roston Chase for helping them beat England by 30 runs as the Caribbean side moved to the top of Group C in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Mumbai on Wednesday. Hope said he was just happy that they got over the line against England, adding that they were playing good cricket in patches. But it was nice to get a more complete game here, he said. Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase shared five wickets between them after Sherfane Rutherford blasted 76 not out off 42 and shared two half-century partnerships as the West Indies overcame England by 30 runs. Motie was brilliant in bagging 3-33 while Chase, who scored 34 crucial runs earlier in the day, claimed 2-29 as West Indies bowled out England for 166 in 19 overs after posting a massive total of 196/6, recovering from early jolts on a pitch that helped the seamers and gripped the ball thanks to Rutherford and his partnerships with Chase and Jason Holder (33). Skipper Shai Hope praised Motie and said, When you have time off, you need to improve your game, and he did exactly that with his new variations and showed his class on the world stage. Hope said they sent Chase, who came into the playing XI in place of Matthew Forde for this match, up the order, after losing two wickets early, just to stabilise the innings, as they have enough firepower down the order. He said that they can rely on Chase in any situation, whether with bat or ball, and he is very crucial. Skipper Shai Hope praised Motie and said, When you have time off, you need to improve your game, and he did exactly that with his new variations and showed his class on the world stage. T20 WC: Motie, Chase Strangle England After Rutherford's 76 As West Indies Win (Ld)
Spinners Gudakesh Motie: Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase shared five wickets between them after Sherfane Rutherford blasted 76 not out off 42 and shared two half-century partnerships as the West Indies overcame England by 30 runs in Match 15 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. Motie was brilliant in bagging 3-33 while Chase, who scored 34 crucial runs earlier in the day, claimed 2-29 as West Indies bowled out England for 166 in 19 overs after posting a massive total of 196/6, recovering from early jolts on a pitch that helped the seamers and gripped the ball. With this win, West Indies moved to the top of Group C with four points, while England slipped to the third position behind Scotland with two points but behind on NRR. Chasing a big target on a pitch that was still aiding spin, England got off to a decent start with Phil Salt (30, 14b, 4x4, 2x6) and Jos Buttler (21, 14b, 2x4, 1x6) raising 38 runs for the opening wicket as they ended the Power-play at 67/1 and looking on course to victory. But they were soon down to 90/4 with Ton Banton (2) and Jacob Bethell (33) succumbed to Motie, then turned the match on its head as West Indies applied the pressure. Skipper Harry Brook (17, 14b, 1x4) and Sam Curran added 41 runs for the fifth wicket partnership, but Motie landed another telling blow by dismissing Brook, out-thought by the spinner for a tame dismissal as England were sent reeling at 131/5. Sam Curran kept fighting with some fine shots, but England kept losing wickets from the other end as Will Jacks 92), Jamie Overton (5) and Jofra Archer (6) fell in quick succession as England fell to 151/8. Everything depended on Curran for England, but the mounting asking rate -- with 47 needed from 18 balls -- and lack of support from the other end meant they were bowled out for 166 in 19 overs. But Liam Dawson (1) was run out, and Adil Rashid was caught by Roston Chase off Shamar Joseph to seal victory for West Indies. Sam Curran was left stranded with 43 not out off 30 balls (3x4, 2x6) as England lost their second match after surviving Nepal scare in their opener. Earlier, England made a good start in the clash of two two-time champions when Jofra Archer and Sam Curran claimed West Indies skipper Shai Hope (0 off 3) and Brandon King (1) in the first two overs and reduced West Indies to 8/2. Roston Chase (34), brought into the match in place of Matthew Forde, and Shimron Hetmyer (23) provided the West Indies some relief with a 47-run partnership for the third wicket. Hetmyer struck Curran a four and six off successive balls while Chase hammered a hat-trick of fours off Will Jacks in the fifth over as the West Indies batters did not slacken on the scoring rate. But just when it looked like the West Indies had turned the tide, Jamie Overton, who was brought in place of Luke Wood, sent back Hetmyer (23, 12 b, 2x4, 2x6), frustrated by the hard length as he offered Curran a simple catch off a slower one that steepled off the pitch. Roston Chase followed suit soon, trapped lbw off a googly by Adil Rashid for 34 (29b, 6x4) as West Indies fell to 77/4. Sherfane Rutherford took over the charge from there and figured in two crucial partnerships -- 51 runs for the fifth wicket with Rovman Powell (14) and another half-century stand for the sixth wicket with Jason Holder. Rutherford raced to his fifty off 29 balls (2x4, 5x6) as he went after the bowling -- hitting sixes off Archer, Jacks (back to back in 12th over), Overton and Dawson as he kept the West Indies on course for a challenging total. He and Holder added 61 runs for the sixth wicket, Holder contributing 33 off 17 balls (1x4, 4x6). Holder, the seasoned all-rounder, blasted three sixes off Curran as they smashed 20 runs in the 17th over. He was out in the final over, caught at long on off Overton after he had smashed another six off Overton with a lofted drive over wide long-on. Rutherford, who was dropped by Rashid off his own bowling, struck Archer for a six and four in the 18th over before blasting a six off Overton in the last ball of the innings to help West Indies recover to post a challenging total. Adil Rashid was the best bowler for England with mesmerising figures of 2-16 in four overs. Overton too bagged a brace (2-33) while Archer and Curran were slightly expensive in claiming a wicket each. But in the end, it proved insufficient against a charged-up West Indies as they produced a superb all-round performance to secure a comfortable victory. Rutherford, who was dropped by Rashid off his own bowling, struck Archer for a six and four in the 18th over before blasting a six off Overton in the last ball of the innings to help West Indies recover to post a challenging total. T20 WC: Motie, Chase Strangle England As Windies Win By 30 Runs
Spinners Gudakesh Motie: Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase shared five wickets between them as West Indies came up with a brilliant all-round performance to beat England by 30 runs in Match 15 of ICC Men's T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. England, who topped the Sri Lankan spinners in winning a series just before the World Cup, found the West Indies too good to handle on Wednesday as the Caribbean side won against them after 10 years. With this win, West Indies moved to the top of Group C with four points, while England slipped to the third position behind Scotland with two points but behind on NRR. Chasing a big target on a pitch that was still aiding spin, England got off to a decent start with Phil Salt (30, 14b, 4x4, 2x6) and Jos Buttler (21, 14b, 2x4, 1x6) raising 38 runs for the opening wicket. Though Salt fell to Romario Shepherd, Buttler and Jacob Bethell took them to 67/1 at the end of the Power-play. Buttler went down to Roston Chase, caught by Rovman Powell, soon after the Power-play as England slipped to 74/2. Spinner Gudakesh Motie then turned the match on its head, sending back Tom Banton (2) and cleaned up Bethell for 33 off 23(4x4, 1x6) as England slipped to 90/4 in the 10th over. Skipper Harry Brook (17, 14b, 1x4) and Sam Curran added 41 runs for the fifth wicket partnership but Motie landed another telling blow by dismissing Brook, out-thought by the spinner for a tame dismissal as England were sent reeling at 131/5. T20 WC: Ishan Kishan Suffers Toe Injury In Nets Ahead Of Namibia Clash
Arun Jaitley Stadium: Defending champions India suffered a brief injury scare on Wednesday after wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was struck on the toe by a searing Jasprit Bumrah yorker during an optional practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, ahead of their Group A against Namibia on Thursday. Kishan, who has been in prolific form and made 20 in the tournament opening win over USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, was the first to pad up in the nets as Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy and Washington Sundar bowled to him. But early in his session, a Bumrah yorker thudded into his left foot, leaving him in immense pain. He walked out of the nets grimacing before sitting down on the ground, prompting immediate attention from the physios. Support staff rushed to unfasten his left pad and shoe as Kishan continued to grimace due to the pain. Bowling coach Morne Morkel also checked in during the assessment made by the physios. After a few minutes, Kishan attempted to walk barefoot, hobbling but showing signs that the injury was not as severe as initially feared. Within five minutes, Kishan put his shoe back on, padded up again and returned to face a handful of deliveries. He looked slightly uneasy before stepping out once more and heading back to the dressing room with a staff member. Though Kishan appeared in good spirits, there was still a noticeable limp. It remained unclear whether he left the nets early as a precaution or simply ceded batting time to teammate Sanju Samson, who continued the session. It's about sticking to our processes. Overton is in for the extra batting, said Brook. West Indies skipper Shai Hope said he would have bowled first as well, but now they have to set the tone with the bat. We would have bowled first, but have to set the tone with the bat. Blessing and curse to play against England so many times. Got to bring our A game. Forde out, Chase in: Tactical, counteract their left-handers, said Hope.
