Mumbai Diary | Congress leadership yet to decide on Patoles fate
The Congress leadership has yet to decide on Nana Patoles future as the party president in Maharashtra. Patole recently submitted his resignation to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, taking responsibility for the partys defeat in the state elections. In his brief resignation letter, he asked the party to determine the status of his resignation, indicating he was willing to step down if the party desired, or continue if they chose to reappoint him. He indirectly attributed the partys loss to the electronic voting machines (EVMs), stating that the reasons for the defeat are no longer a secret. Perform or perish: CMs message to ministers During the recent cabinet expansion, CM Devendra Fadnavis sent a loud and clear message to his party leaders by not only inducting new faces but also assigning them key portfolios. While senior ministers received less significant portfolios, the newer, less established political leaders were given important roles. This shift indicates that future cabinet restructuring will depend on the performance of the ministers. Also, the allocation of portfolios is not permanent, he has conveyed. Those who do not meet expectations may face consequences similar to the senior leaders who now hold less prominent positions. No appointments without CMs approval To ensure the smooth operation of his government, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed his ministers not to appoint personal assistants or officers on special duty without his approval. This move is intended to make sure that suitable individuals are placed in the appropriate roles. In 2014, when Fadnavis previously served as chief minister, he issued a similar order, which led to the appointment of individuals closely associated with the BJP and RSS. He aims to implement the same system again to maintain both direct and indirect control over the government and its administration. Parbhani Victim Killed for Being a Dalit: Rahul
Mumbai: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday claimed that Somnath Suryavanshi was murdered because he was a Dalit. Suryavanshi, who was arrested in connection with riots that took place after a replica of the Constitution was allegedly desecrated by a mentally ill man, died when he was in judicial custody. After meeting the family members of Suryavanshi in Parbhani, Gandhi demanded action against the police officers responsible for his death. They (family) showed me the post-mortem report, videos, photographs. This is 100 per cent a custodial death. He has been murdered, he said. The Opposition alleged that he died due to police brutality. Gandhi criticised the Maharashtra government for its handling of the case and demanded that the guilty police officers be punished. On December 15, Somnath Suryawanshi, a law student, died in custody. The interim postmortem report attributed the immediate cause of death as shock following multiple injuries. However, last week Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state Assembly that Suryavanshi had told a magistrate that he was not tortured in police custody and the CCTV footage from the lock up also doesnt show any evidence of brutality. Fadnavis also said that Suryavanshi had old respiratory problems and internal injuries like fractures. The Maharashtra government has announced Rs 10 lakh financial aid for Suryavanshis family. However, Gandhi alleged that the Maharashtra Chief Minister had lied in the Assembly. This young man was killed because he was a Dalit and was protecting the Constitution. The ideology of the RSS is to destroy the Constitution. We want this matter to be resolved immediately and those who have done this should be punished. No politics is being done, he said. Hitting back at Gandhi, Fadnavis said the Congress leaders visit was only for a political purpose and he tried to create hatred among people on caste lines. This was just a political meeting, an attempt to create hatred among people on caste lines. He (Rahul Gandhi) has been doing this for many years. He has completed his work of spreading hatred today in Parbhani, the Maharashtra Chief Minister said.

Filmmaker Shyam Benegal Dies at 90, Leaving Behind a Cinematic Legacy
MUMBAI: Master filmmaker Shyam Benegal, star of the parallel movement that reshaped Hindi cinemas narrative style, died on Monday after a prolonged illness. At 90, he leaves behind classics like Manthan, Mandi and Ankur, a testament to an era he shaped and a legacy that continues to influence generations of storytellers. He is survived by his wife Nira and daughter Pia. Benegal breathed his last at Wockhardt Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He passed away at 6.38 pm. He had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years, but it worsened recently, his daughter Pia Benegal said. Only nine days earlier, on his 90th birthday, actors from across his decades-spanning career gathered to celebrate. The likes of Shabana Azmi who made her debut in his film Ankur (1973) Naseeruddin Shah, Rajit Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Divya Dutta, and Kunal Kapoor came together for what would be his last public photograph. Benegals prolific career stretched nearly seven decades, straddling diverse genres and themesfrom rural distress ( Manthan , Ankur ) and feminist perspectives ( Mandi , Bhumika ) to biopics ( The Making of the Mahatma , Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero ). His repertoire also extended to landmark television series such as Bharat Ek Khoj (an adaptation of Jawaharlal Nehrus The Discovery of India ) and Samvidhaan , chronicling the making of the Indian Constitution. Despite his advanced age, Benegal remained active. Im working on two to three projects; theyre all different, he had said on his 90th birthday. He also admitted to frequent hospital visits and dialysis sessions but downplayed it: We all grow old. I dont do anything special on my birthday, just cut a cake at the office with my team. His most recent film, Mujib: The Making of a Nation (2023), explored the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Benegal had also hoped to direct a film on Noor Inayat Khan, a secret agent during World War II an ambition that now remains unfulfilled. Earlier this year, Manthan (1976) inspired by Verghese Kuriens milk cooperative movement in Gujarat and starring Smita Patil, Girish Karnad, and Naseeruddin Shah was restored and showcased in the Cannes Classics segment, a testament to his enduring cinematic legacy. As news of his demise spread, admirers remembered Benegal fondly. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur called him the creator of the new wave in Hindi cinema: He changed the direction of Indian films with works like Ankur and Manthan , and made stars out of great actors such as Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. Farewell, my friend and my guide. Actor-director Atul Tiwari mourned the loss, calling Benegal our icon and thanking him for giving tough stories and flawed characters such amazing dignity. Akshay Kumar described him as one of the finest filmmakers in the country. Director Sudhir Mishra noted Benegals ability to capture the poetry of the ordinary face and ordinary lives, while also highlighting the underlying sadness in his films at societys unfulfilled promise. Benegals passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, one that redefined storytelling and championed socio-political narratives that remain relevant to this day. His influence on multiple generations of filmmakers and audiences ensures that his legacy will live on even though his distinct cinematic voice will be greatly missed.

Hyderabad Mourns the Passing of Filmmaker Shyam Benegal
Hyderabad: Shyam Benegal was rarely seen without his cigarette or a suitcase packed with books, wherever his travels took him. A dreamer with a penchant for stories, he grew up cycling the streets of Alwal, swimming in its wells, and playing cricket at the Parade Ground. He was an Alwal boy through and through, recalled filmmaker B. Narsing Rao, five-time national film awards winner and maker of films like 'Daasi ' and 'Matti Manushulu ' recalled. Multitalented, humble, and deeply connected to this city. The passing of filmmaker Shyam Benegal on Monday, has left a void in the world of storytelling, but in Hyderabad, it feels personal. Born in 1934 in Alwal, Secunderabad, Benegal would cycle to attend his English literature classes in the city's Nizam College. In other times he would be editing the college magazine 'Collegian' or play sports, for he was a state cycling and swimming champion as per his long-time associates. Benegal's early years were spent surrounded by family in Alwal and a photo studio run by his father in Lal Bazaar, Trimulgherry. He left Hyderabad in 1958, staying briefly with his cousin Guru Dutt's family in Mumbai before carving out his own identity in advertising and later cinema. His childhood home in Alwal, sold in 1986, now stands in ruins, but memories of him linger in the wells he swam in and the grounds he played on. He left Hyderabad early, but the city never left him, he was psychologically connected to it and quite nostalgic too, said Narsing Rao, who shared a friendship with Benegal despite being twelve years younger, adding, Shyam asked me to send my son to him to learn filmmaking. Benegal's roots in the city extended to his films. His first feature, 'Ankur' (1974), was shot in Yellareddyguda, a suburb of Hyderabad, and based on the true story of his friend Suryam. It won three national film awards and was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. His second film, 'Nishant', which explored Telangana's Armed struggles of mid 1940s, was shot in Gundlapochampally. 'Susman', a portrayal of industrialisation in rural India, was set in Pochampally, which depicted the weavers community of the region. He collaborated with writers like Vijay Tendulkar, and his narratives often drew from newspaper clippings and real-life incidents, said Rao. He didn't just make films; he created conversations about inequality, exploitation, and identity. Benegal's attachment to Hyderabad extended to his creative choices. His movie 'Bazaar' featured the poetry of Makhdoom Mohiuddin and songs by Hyderabad's own Talat Aziz. His later film 'Well Done Abba' (2009) was loosely based on Jeelani Bano's 'Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi'. He loved being in touch, added Narsing Rao. Even when he grew frail, he responded to every message. However, this year, for the past four months, there was silence, and I knew something was wrong. Beyond his films, Benegal left a legacy as a teacher and mentor. He taught at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), served as its chairman twice, and introduced audiences to talents like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. A suitcase of books, a cigarette in hand, and a vision that turned Indian cinema into a global conversation but even on the global level Hyderabbad was always home in his heart. He swam in these wells here, cycled these roads, and left to conquer the world, but Hyderabad stayed with him wherever he went, said Narsing Rao. Now, in Alwal, Benegal's elder brother Madhusudan's son Sridhar Benegal (50) lives with two daughters but in a separate house, not the ancestral one.

Funds Crunch Affects Services at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Vizag
Visakhapatnam : Fifty-year-old M Revathi walked in with her Aarogyasri card, hoping to receive cancer care at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre here the other day. Like many others, she returned home disappointed, unable to access the state-of-the-art facilities there. In the past ten days, numerous cancer patients have encountered significant challenges there as the cancer centre has stopped its services to holders of the Aarogyasri card. An employee of the centre said the hospital continues to provide treatment exclusively to existing Aarogyasri cardholders but is not accepting new registrations. The state government owes it about ` 25crore in unpaid bills. This significantly affects HBCHRC's capacity to deliver cancer care and admit new patients, it was explained. The cancer centre has communicated with the CEO of the Dr Nandamuri Tarka Rama Vaidya Seva Trust. It is now awaiting a response from the CEO. Cancer patient M Revathi told Deccan Chronicle that the hospital has state-of-the-art facilities and 200 patient beds. The centre offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services in pathology, radiology (such as CT, MRI, and mammography) as also nuclear medicine (including PET-CT and SPECT-CT) and has a fully equipped blood bank. The treatment options there encompass the surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and preventive and palliative care services, including home care and rehabilitation. Revathi said she could not access similar facilities in a private setting because costs are prohibitive in such faciolities. Situated in Visakhapatnam, HBCHRC, established in 2014, is a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Commission and operates under the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai. Its mission is to provide multidisciplinary, evidence-based, and affordable cancer care to underserved populations, making it a cornerstone of oncology care in the region. However, the centre is facing a shortage of cancer care drugs. Officials from the HBCHRC drug delivery department cited a lack of funds as the reason. HBCHRC offers comprehensive care across various specialities, including Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Critical Care and Anesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis, Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Psycho-Oncology, Haemato-Oncology, and Preventive Oncology. Additionally, the institution provides vital support services such as medical social work, rehabilitation (occupational and physiotherapy), nutrition, speech therapy, and comprehensive palliative care. As a hub for education and training, HBCHRC coordinates Preventive Oncology, Basic Oncology services and Palliative Care throughout Andhra Pradesh. Since 2022, it has also served as the secretariat for the National Cancer Grid's Andhra Pradesh Chapter, spearheading initiatives like virtual tumour boards and providing equipment and technical support for procuring cancer drugs. The current crisis highlights the urgent need to resolve the financial issues between the state government and HBCHRC to ensure that cancer patients continue to receive the care they need.

Bhujbal Meets Fadnavis Amidst Suspense Over Future Move
Mumbai: Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, who was vocal in his disappointment over being denied a ministerial berth in the Mahayuti Governments Cabinet, on Monday met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. While the meeting sent tongues in political circles wagging, Bhujbal claimed that he met the CM to discuss the issues of Other Backward Class (OBC) communities and the current political and social situation in the state. Bhujbal, accompanied by his nephew Sameer Bhujbal, had a 30-minute meeting with Fadnavis at the CMs residence, Sagar bungalow. The meeting came on the backdrop of the OBC leader planning to join the BJP after being dropped from the cabinet. Speaking after the meeting, Bhujbal said, I have told Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis everything that has been happening after December 15. He has assured me that he will address the dissatisfaction within 8 to 10 days. Fadnavis told me that the Other Backward Classes have played an important role in the landslide victory of the Mahayuti in the (recent) Vidhan Sabha elections and promised that OBC communitys interests are not harmed, Bhujbal said. After his election exclusion from the cabinet, Bhujbal had signalled his discontent with his remarks Jaha Nahi Chaina, Vahan Nahi Rehna (There is no point in staying where there is no comfort). However, Bhujbal refused to comment on whether he would leave the NCP and is planning to join the BJP. I have said everything I wanted to say to the Chief Minister. I will not say anything more on this, he stated. When asked about the meeting in Pune, Ajit Pawar said it was his partys internal issue and they will resolve it in their way. A prominent OBC leader and MLA from Yevla in Nashik district, Bhujbal was notably absent from the Maharashtra State Legislatures winter session, which concluded in Nagpur on Saturday. He left for Nashik on the first day of the session, a day after 39 Mahayuti MLAs were sworn in as ministers. His absence has sparked intense speculation about his future in the party and the alliance. The Maharashtra CM said Ajit Pawar wanted Bhujbal to play a role for his party at the national level. Ajit dada told me that NCP was a national party and wanted to get back the status. Therefore he thought a tall leader like Bhujbal was needed in national politics. But Bhujbal has other ideas which has led to the current situation. But Bhujbal is important for us and we will resolve the issue, he said.

NIA arrests key aide of designated terrorist Landa from Mumbai in Punjab terror conspiracy case
NEW DELHI: Making another breakthrough in the Punjab terror conspiracy case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested a key aide of designated Khalistani individual terrorist Lakhbir Singh alias Landa from Mumbai. Jatinder Singh alias Jyoti, also an associate of gangster Pavitra Batala, has been absconding since the arrest of weapons supplier Baljit Singh alias Rana Bhai in July 2024, and was arrested today from Mumbai after extensive technical and on-ground efforts by NIA, said an official. The anti-terror federal probe agency has identified Jatinder as a member of the terrorist-gangster nexus formed by foreign-based Landa of the banned terrorist organisation, Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), and an aide of Batala, a close associate of Landa. The officials said the NIA in its investigation of the case found that Jatinder was providing weapons to on-ground operatives of Landa and Batala in Punjab. He was procuring weapons from Madhya Pradesh (MP) based supplier Baljit Singh alias Rana Bhai, who has recently been named in the charge sheet in the instant case, said another official. Investigations have further revealed that Jatinder had brought ten pistols from MP and delivered them to operatives of Landa and Batala in Punjab, he said noting that the arrested accused had planned to smuggle more weapons from MP into Punjab but was scuttled by the NIA's sustained search operations over the past several months. Jatinders arrest marks a major step forward in NIAs efforts to dismantle the terror-gangster nexus by preventing the smuggling of arms, ammunition, explosives etc. and raising funds for carrying out terrorist acts on Indian soil, the official said.
