BJP seeks to expand footprint in Maharashtra local polls, looks to edge out rivals and allies
MUMBAI: After securing a majority in the recent Assembly elections, the BJP is looking to consolidate its dominance in Maharashtra by winning as many seats as possible in the upcoming local body polls. Elections to 42 Nagar Panchayats and 246 Nagar Parishads will be held on December 2, with counting on December 3. Even before the results are out, the BJP has begun projecting early gains. Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan claimed that 100 party councillors have already been elected unopposed, including 41 from western Maharashtra, 49 from North Maharashtra and the rest from the Konkan and Marathwada regions. He also said several BJP-backed presidents of Nagar Parishads and Nagar Panchayats have been elected unopposed. A political observer said the BJP is treating the local body polls as a crucial step to reinforce its dominance in Maharashtra. The party wants to win as many councillor and president posts in Nagar Panchayats and Nagar Parishads as possible to consolidate its hold at the grassroots, the observer noted. These elections, he said, give the BJP an opportunity to expand its organisational base in regions where it has traditionally been weak and to chart a roadmap for the 2029 Assembly polls. Emerging as the single largest force in local bodies would also send a message to its alliance partners to accept the BJPs big brother role by ceding political space. The BJP is not just eyeing the Opposition space; it is also seeking to grow at the expense of its own allies, he added. Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Patil, however, accused the BJP of using pressure tactics. He alleged that while the BJP often invokes jungle raj in Bihar, it is using the same playbook in Maharashtra to threaten people and steal the mandate.

Jonassen Pulls Out Of WPL Auction Due To Injury, Other Left-arm Spinners In Sharp Focus
Mannat Kashyap Shuchi Upadhayay: Hours ahead of the 2026 Womens Premier League (WPL) mega auction, Australias left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Jess Jonassen has been ruled out from the player pool owing to an injury. Sources familiar with the matter told IANS on Thursday that Jesss unavailability was formally communicated to all five franchises during the mandatory pre-auction briefing on Wednesday. Jess had been a part of Delhi Capitals (DC) in the first three WPL seasons, where they finished as runners-up on all occasions. Though Jess is turning out for Brisbane Heat in the ongoing Womens Big Bash League (WBBL), it is understood that a shoulder issue she has been managing for an extended period is the reason behind her unavailability for the WPL auction and subsequent season. A few teams were keen on getting her in the auction due to Sophie Molineux not registering, but now that strategy has been changed and back up plans being discussed due to her unavailability being told a day prior. It wont come as a surprise if the other left-arm spinners, especially in the Indian players pool, will have more takers for them or their eventual price sees an increase in the mega auction, said sources. Other prominent left-arm spin bowling options who are also handy all-rounders are Englands Sophie Ecclestone, South Africas Chloe Tryon, as well as Indias N Sree Charani, Radha Yadav, Tanuja Kanwer, and are followed by youngsters like Parunika Sisodia, Bharti Rawal, Vaishavi Sharma, Ayushee Shukla, Mannat Kashyap Shuchi Upadhayay and Triveni Vasistha. It is also understood that in the pre-auction briefing, all five franchises were told that India opener Pratika Rawal, wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia and uncapped seamer VJ Joshitha are nursing injuries, though their names remain in the auction pool. Pratika is recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the World Cup league game against Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai, while Yastika had to undergo an ACL surgery after being ruled out of the World Cup due to injuring her left knee in the pre-tournament camp in Visakhapatnam. It is also understood that the injured trio cannot be counted towards the mandatory 15-member squad (though 18 is the maximum squad strength for the competition), and if they are picked, teams cannot get a replacement for them. 10.64 per cent of Mumbai voters have duplicate entries: SEC data
MUMBAI: Nearly 10.64 per cent or more than 11 lakh of Mumbai's 1.03 crore electorate have duplicate enrolments in the electoral roll, as per data shared by the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC). The data shows that a majority of wards with the highest number of duplicate voters were previously represented by Opposition corporators. The SEC on Wednesday extended the deadline for submitting objections from November 27 to December 3. The final voters' list will be published on December 10, according to a statement issued by the SEC. The data shows that 4.33 lakh voters appear more than once in the draft voters' list published last week, with multiple entries ranging from two to as many as 103 times. This has pushed the total number of duplicate enrolments to 11,01,505. The SEC has attributed the repetition of names to factors such as printing errors, voters' relocation, and failure to remove the names of deceased persons. Booth-level workers will now conduct field visits, fill forms, and obtain verification undertakings to ensure each voter is listed only once, officials said. An SEC official indicated that Mumbai's civic elections, slated to be completed by January 31, 2026, as per a Supreme Court directive, may see a slight delay. Depending on the pace of corrections by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the polls could either be held by the end of January or the SEC may seek an extension to the first week of February, he added. The SEC data further shows that four of the five wards with the highest number of duplicate voters were previously represented by Opposition corporators from parties such as Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Nationalist Congress Party (SP). Two of these wards fall under the Worli assembly constituency, represented by Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray. Opposition leaders have alleged irregularities in the ongoing revision of the voters' list. In a post on X, Aaditya Thackeray has claimed there were millions of repeated names, fraudulent household entries, and voter cards lacking basic details. Our expos on the corrupt practices of the election commission and the vote fraud in millions has led the the election commission giving us a week more to further find the vote chori. Our exercise is not to only speak about it or only expose it, we expect corrective action on Aaditya Thackeray (@AUThackeray) November 26, 2025 He warned that refusing to extend the suggestion and objection period would raise doubts about the fairness of the election process. Worli's ward no.199, earlier represented by former mayor and Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar, has the highest number of duplicate voters at 8,207. It is followed by Ghatkopar's ward no.131 with 7,741 duplicate entries, Parel-Lalbaug's ward 203 with 7,624, Kalachowki's ward 205 with 7,585, and Century Mill's ward 194 with 7,584 duplicate voters, as per the SEC data. Civic officials, meanwhile, said a drive to delete duplicate names is currently underway. A senior BMC official clarified that the figure of 11 lakh refers to the number of repeated entries and not individual persons, adding that the municipal corporation is conducting door-to-door checks to cleanse the rolls. All 25 assistant municipal commissioners have been designated as nodal officers for the rectification exercise, which will run from November 27 to December 5. The final voters' list is expected to be published thereafter.

Passengers fume as Indigo flights face long delays, airline cites 'operational reasons'
NEW DELHI: Indigo flights across the country suffered extensive delays from Wednesday evening into the night, with the airline repeatedly citing operational reasons. While Indigo also mentioned air-traffic congestion at Mumbai and Delhi, officials at Delhi airport completely denied any such congestion. Passengers, meanwhile, alleged that the non-availability of pilots for certain flights was among the key causes. Multiple attempts to obtain an official response from Indigo yielded no result. However, the airlines official handle on X kept replying to passengers that every delay was due to operational reasons. The worst affected routes included the DelhiChandigarh sector, where flights were delayed in both directions. Deepak Dhiman, a passenger, posted, Indigo flight 6E 2195 from Chandigarh to Delhi is delayed by 6 hours. Pilot is not available to fire the engine. Passengers are forced to wait for the pilot. No one knows when this flight will take off. An hour later, he updated that the pilot had arrived and the plane was being refuelled. Rajeev Chawla, another irate passenger, questioned the airline, Do you have a sense of responsibility? Flight from Delhi to Chandigarh (6E 2196) was to depart at 2.55 pm. Now it will depart at 8 pm. Is it fair to harass customers for a 45-min flight for five hours? Passenger Anandika Khajuria appealed to the aviation regulator DGCA and the Civil Aviation Minister to look into what operational issues were causing such lengthy delays. Although Indigo attributed the delays to congestion at Delhis Indira Gandhi International Airport, multiple airport sources, including the official spokesperson, denied any such congestion. In the south, the Bengaluru to Coimbatore service (6E 914) departed at 8.20 pm instead of 4.45 pm. Passenger Mayank Jha posted, Flight 6E 914 was supposed to take off at 4.45 pm. Delayed to 7.15 pm and delayed further because the First Officer hasnt even arrived. Who is accountable for this level of mismanagement? The Chennai to Jaipur flight (6E 6381), scheduled to depart at 8.50 pm, was postponed repeatedly before finally being rescheduled to 1 am on 27 November. Flyer Vijay Mathur listed four different delay announcements: from 8.50 pm to 9.20 pm; then to 10.50 pm; then to 12.50 am; and finally to 1 am. The Chandigarh to Mumbai flight (6E 5019) was delayed by nearly seven hours. Scheduled to take off at 3.55 pm, it was eventually slated for departure at 10.45 pm. Passenger Apurva Parekh wrote, Delays of 6 hours and no clarity. These guys have no clue how to handle passengers. Very bad customer service and support. Indigo responded that the delay was due to operational reasons and said the team was doing its best to get the aircraft airborne. Another flyer on the same service, Kumar Gaurav, demanded clarity on the delay. The Mumbai to Bengaluru flight (6E 5074) was delayed thrice, contributing to nearly two hours of waiting time. The delay was attributed to the late arrival of the incoming aircraft (6E 5073). Passenger Pramod Modi posted, 6E 5073 delayed by almost three hours but still such poor gate management that no one in ground staff is able to decide the boarding gate Indigo did not issue any official statement on the disruptions. One user even defended the airline, arguing that the delayed flights formed only a small portion of its total operations. A day earlier, on Tuesday, more than 100 passengers on the Pune to Delhi flight (6E 2285) were delayed by over three hours after one of the pilots refused to fly, stating his duty hours had ended, according to reports from Pune. Violation of Flight Duty Time Limitations is taken seriously by the aviation regulator. If you want, I can also polish the headline further or give 23 alternate options.

Anjum Chopra Feels Sophie Ecclestone 'won't Come Cheap' At WPL Mega Auction
Anjum Chopra: Former India captain Anjum Chopra opined that England cricketer Sophie Ecclestone will earn big bucks at the inaugural Womens Premier League (WPL) 2026 mega auction here on Thursday. The auction is set to feature 277 players, including 194 Indian and 83 international stars, promising an electrifying battle for talent across franchises. As anticipation builds, Anjum, alongside former India player Veda Krishnamurthy, highlighted that Englands Ecclestone and Australias Alyssa Healy are likely to dominate the auction spotlight. Speaking on JioHostar, Chopra emphasised Ecclestones value as a left-arm spinner capable of turning games, saying, Sophie Ecclestone is a true match-winner and will undoubtedly command a strong price at the auction. Given the budgets teams currently have, she wont come cheap. Most teams are likely to consider her as a key acquisition. Her left-arm spin and control make her a valuable asset. While Delhi and Mumbai Indians might not prioritise her, teams like the UP Warriorz will definitely look to use their right-to-match card on her. Even Delhi could consider bringing her on board as a strategic option. Adding to this, Veda highlighted Ecclestones consistency and all-around contributions as she stated, Ecclestone has been extremely impressive, especially in the World Cup, where she showcased why she is the top-ranked T20 bowler. In the shorter format, she brings a crucial X-factor, consistently delivering her full quota of four overs with an excellent economy rate. Additionally, she can contribute valuable runs with the bat, making her a genuine match-winner. Much like Deepti Sharma, Sophie will be a highly sought-after player by all teams in the auction. Adding to this, Veda highlighted Ecclestones consistency and all-around contributions as she stated, Ecclestone has been extremely impressive, especially in the World Cup, where she showcased why she is the top-ranked T20 bowler.
