Congress, VBA seal alliance for BMC polls
MUMBAI: The Congress party and Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) on Sunday cemented the alliance for Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation (BMC) elections in Mumbai. According to the alliance agreement, out of total 227 seats of BMC, the VBA will contest the 62 Seats while remaining 165 seats will be contested by the Congress party. The alliance between Congress and VBA was agreed in the presence of Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal and VBA State Vice President Dr Dhairyavardhan Pundkar. Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal called this alliance as a new Chapter in state politics. Sapkal said Congress and the VBA had agreed to an alliance for the BMC, while decisions on the remaining 28 municipal corporations in the state would be taken at the local level. He said the announcement, made on the Congress partys foundation day, was significant for the alliance. The alliance between the Congress and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi is a natural one. Both parties share the same ideological foundation. Both are committed to constitutional values and to building an India envisioned by the Constitution. Their stance on equality, fraternity, and social justice is identical, and neither party is willing to compromise on constitutional principles, he added. He further said that both the parties allied in 1998 and 1999 elections. Now, after 25 years, we have come together once again. While the process took some time, a new chapter begins from today, Sapkal added. This is not a game of numbers, but a meeting of ideas. Meanwhile, Pundkar said that both parties have come together to stop the divisive and destructive politics of the BJP. He noted that Harshvardhan Sapkal took the first step towards the alliance and maintained a positive approach from the very beginning. Pundkar also said that the party will contest 62 seats in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. VBA Vice President Siddharth Mokale said that discussions on seat-sharing in any alliance are rarely fully satisfactory, but a consensus must be reached at some point. He stated that positive discussions took place from both sides for the alliance. While the alliance for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has been announced today, decisions regarding other municipal corporations will be taken positively by the local leadership of both parties, Mokale said.

4th T20I: Fifties From Smriti, Shafali Take India To 30-run Win Over Spirited Sri Lanka (ld)
Sri Lanka Women: Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma struck fluent half-centuries to set up Indias record total of 221/2 before the bowlers held off a spirited Sri Lankan chase to clinch a 30-run victory in the fourth womens T20I at the Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday. Asked to bat first for the first time in the series, Smriti and Shafali shared a blistering 162-run opening stand, Indias highest ever partnership for the first wicket in T20Is. It was an absolute treat for the enthusiastic fans as India posted their highest-ever score in the shortest format. Shafali continued her rich vein of form by hitting 79 off 46 deliveries - her third consecutive half-century laced with 12 fours and a six. Smriti, on the other hand, took her time to get going before matching her partner stroke for stroke in a knock of 80 off 48 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes. Though both fell in successive overs, Richa Ghosh applied finishing touches with an unbeaten 40 off just 16 balls. Her late assault, coupled with Harmanpreet Kaurs 16 not out off 10 balls, ensured India closed with a flourish by adding 63 runs in the last five overs. Chasing 222, Sri Lanka mounted a spirited effort by racing to fifty in just 3.3 overs, and captain Chamari Athapaththu top-scoring with 52, as all batters came out with an intention to hit boundaries. Yet they could not overhaul Indias record score, as Sri Lanka ended up at 191/6, which is now their highest total posted in womens T20Is. India were tested for the first time in the series, as their bowlers grappled with a wet ball and the fielding unit looked below par. Vaishnavi Sharma stood out with her figures of 2-24 in her four overs, while Arundhati Reddy took 2-42. The rest of the attack found it hard to contain Sri Lankan batters, but the cushion of a record batting effort proved to be decisive as India held firm to extend their unbeaten run in the series. India raced to 61/0 at the end of the powerplay, with boundaries flowing freely from the bats of Smriti and Shafali as every over in the opening phase yielded at least two fours. The Sri Lankan bowlers found no respite as captain Chamari cycled through her options without success. Smriti reached a significant milestone during her innings, becoming just the fourth woman and second Indian after Mithali Raj to reach 10,000 international runs. She brought up her fifty off 36 balls alongside Shafali, who got her half-century in 30 balls. After a brief slowdown during overs 7-9, where India managed just 14 runs, Shafali and Smriti exploded by plundering 74 runs in the next five overs. The acceleration was remarkable: the first 50 runs came in 32 balls, the next 50 in 33 balls, but the final 50 required just 21 deliveries. Nimasha broke through in the 16th over by dismissing Shafali caught and bowled, before Smriti followed soon after, falling to Malsha when her top edge was caught by backward square leg. Richa then unleashed carnage in the death overs, smashing an unbeaten quick-fire knock that included a brutal assault on Kavisha Dilhari in the 19th over smashing three sixes and a four in four consecutive balls. She and Harmanpreet added an unbroken 50-run partnership in just 24 balls to propel India past their previous best of 217/4, set against the West Indies in Navi Mumbai last year. In the chase, Sri Lanka made their intentions clear from the first ball, with Hasini Perera smashing three boundaries in the opening over off Renuka Singh Thakur. Arundhati Reddy, brought into the side for this match in place of a rested Kranti Gaud, endured a torrid start to her spell. Her first two legal deliveries disappeared to the fence, with the second coming off a no-ball and free hit that yielded 10 runs, as the second over went for 15 runs. India's attempt to stem the flow by introducing spin backfired as Deepti Sharma's first over leaked 13 runs, as Sri Lanka rocketed to 43/0. The opening pair of Hasini and Chamari Athapaththu continued their onslaught through the powerplay, bringing up Sri Lankas fifty in the fourth over. India's breakthrough came in the sixth over when Arundhati dismissed the dangerous Perera for 33 off 20 balls. The opener attempted to clear long-off, but the bat turned in her hand, and Harmanpreet Kaur completed the catch at mid-off. It briefly stalled Sri Lanka's momentum as boundaries dried up. However, captain Chamari and Imesha Dulani steadied the innings through smart strike rotation, keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the 10-over mark, Sri Lanka stood at 95/1, six runs ahead of India's position at the same stage. A moment of fortune came for Imesha when Vaishnavi Sharma beat her in flight and almost had her stumped if wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh hadnt missed it, but the delivery was ruled a no-ball. Chamari reached her fifty off just 31 balls, but just as she appeared set for playing a match-winning knock, she departed for 52 off 37 balls holing out in the deep off Vaishnavi Sharma. Though Deepti misjudged the delivery and dropped a chance of Harshitha Samarawickrama, it didnt cost much as Imesha was run out by a good throw from Amanjot Kaur. In the next over, Harshitha was beaten in flight by Vaishnavi, and this time, Richa held on to complete the stumping. The fielding errors continued when Richa missed a stumping, while Smriti dropped a catch at long-on to give Nilashika Silva and Kavisha Dilhari reprieves. But Kavisha fell for 13 off Arundhati, with substitute fielder G Kamalini finally taking the catch after three failed attempts. Though Deepti dropped another catch, this time of Rashmika Sewwandi, she was castled by a slower full toss from Sree Charani, as India got the game in their favour yet again. 4th T20I: Smriti Mandhana Makes 80, Shafali Hits 79 As India Smash 221/2 Against Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka Women: Smriti Mandhana struck a brilliant 80 off 48 balls while Shafali Verma continued her good run by hitting 79 off 46 deliveries, her third successive half-century in this series, as India posted a massive 221/2, their highest womens T20I score, against Sri Lanka in the fourth T20I at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Asked to bat first for the first time in the series, Smriti and Shafali laid the foundation for the tall score with a blistering 162-run opening stand, Indias highest-ever partnership for the first wicket in T20Is. Sri Lanka, which had been keen to bowl first throughout the series, had only Malsha Shehani and Nimasha Madushani as their wicket-takers. They now face the daunting task of chasing 222. Much will depend on Chamari Athapaththu, playing her 150th T20I game, if they are to mount a serious challenge to chasing Indias imposing total. India raced to 61/0 at the end of the powerplay, with boundaries flowing freely from the bats of Smriti and Shafali as every over in the opening phase yielded at least two fours. 4th T20I: Mandhana Becomes Second Indian Woman Batter To Cross 10,000 International Runs
Greenfield International Stadium: India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana on Sunday became only the second Indian woman player after compatriot Mithali Raj to complete 10,000 runs in international cricket. Smriti, who debuted for India against Bangladesh in April 2013, needed 27 runs before the fourth T20I against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram to reach the huge landmark, and reached the milestone in just 20 deliveries at the Greenfield International Stadium. She eventually made 80 off 48 balls her 32nd fifty laced with 11 fours and three sixes at a strike-rate of 170.2. Apart from Mithali, Smriti joins New Zealands Suzie Bates and former England player turned coach Charlotte Edwards as the only other women to cross the big landmark. Smriti has also scored 629 runs in seven Tests and 5,322 runs in 117 ODIs. Raj, the highest run-scorer in womens international cricket, retired with 10,868 runs across formats, and Smriti has the opportunity to surpass her tally. Will Speak To Shreyas Iyer On His Vijay Hazare Trophy Availability, Says MCA Secretary
Vijay Hazare Trophy: Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar said the association will speak to India batter Shreyas Iyer regarding his availability for the later stages of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Ms Jemimah Rodrigues was unavailable for selection in the 4th T20I in Thiruvananthapuram due to weakness arising from mild fever. In place of Jemimah, batting all-rounder Harleen Deol has come into the playing eleven for the match, where India will bat first against Sri Lanka for the first time in the ongoing series, with the hosts having an unassailable 3-0 lead. Jemimah made scores of 69 not out, 26, and nine, and sits as the second leading run-getter in the series after opener Shafali Verma. The unbeaten 69 also led to Jemimah jumping five places to be at number nine in the womens T20I batting rankings. Despite missing out on Sundays clash, Jemimah has enjoyed a standout 2025, ranking third among Indias run-scorers 771 runs in ODIs and 212 runs in T20Is. Anxiety, long queues as 32 lakh unmapped voters attend SIR hearings across West Bengal
KOLKATA: Hearings under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls continued for the second consecutive day across West Bengal on Sunday, with long queues witnessed at 3,234 centres statewide. According to a senior official, around 32 lakh unmapped voters, those unable to establish linkage with the 2002 electoral roll, have been called for hearings in the first phase of the revision process. At the Sankrail block office in Howrah district, 75-year-old polio-afflicted voter Sabita Manna waited in an ambulance for her turn, worried over discrepancies in her electoral details. Her nephew Tapas Manna said she could not locate her name in the 2002 roll and had been asked to be physically present despite her disability. Earlier, polling officials and political representatives visited her at home. This time, they have made her personal appearance mandatory, he said. Sabita said from inside the ambulance, It hurts when, at this age, you have to prove your citizenship all over again. Similar anxiety was evident in Barasats Kazipara area, where voter Nirufa Khatoon said she was unable to prove her father had voted in the 2002 polls as both her parents had passed away. I was born in North 24 Parganas and shifted here after marriage. I have all documents, but I am on the edge, she said. Her husband added that she had carried her school leaving certificate, birth certificate, Aadhaar, ration card and existing voter ID to the hearing. In Midnapore town, residents of Hatath colony said only two out of ten voters per household found their names in the draft rolls. One woman, who admitted being born in Bangladesh but said she had migrated to India in the late 1980s and voted regularly since then, expressed hope that her documents would be accepted. In Bardhaman, a 26-year-old woman could not attend the hearing as she was accompanying her three-year-old daughter undergoing treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. Her father-in-law said he carried all relevant documents, including medical records, to the camp. Meanwhile, at the Chetla High School camp in south Kolkata, Mayor and local MLA Firhad Hakim said voters who were unmapped due to technical glitches despite submitting all documents need not attend hearings for now. I have been told by CEO personnel that the onus lies with the Election Commission to fix the glitches and properly link names with the 2002 electoral roll, Hakim said. The Election Commission had published the draft electoral rolls on December 16 after the SIR exercise, deleting over 58 lakh names on grounds such as death, migration and non-submission of enumeration forms. Centre provides CISF security to Bengal CEO Amid the ongoing exercise, the Centre has provided a Y-plus category armed security cover to West Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal, following inputs from central agencies about potential threats. Officials said the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the order on December 26, deploying 1112 armed CISF personnel from its VIP security wing for Agarwals personal and residential security in Kolkata. The security move comes amid heightened political tensions, with the ruling Trinamool Congress accusing the Election Commission of deleting names of lakhs of legitimate voters to benefit the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. A TMC delegation had also submitted a memorandum to Agarwal on Saturday protesting the SIR exercise. (With inputs from PTI)

The operational integration and legal merger of Air India Express and AirAsia India into one entity took place on October 1, 2024. Incidentally, an initiative to have a special registration plate was done by Air Asia India in the past for JRD Tata, with the letters - VT-JRD. It was called `The Pioneer Aircraft'. Post-merger, this aircraft too now finds a place in the fleet of Air India Express. So, we will shortly be operating two aircraft with special number plates, another source said. Punitive and retaliatory tariffs , US claims of mediating tensions between India and Pakistan, and tougher immigration policies -- including mass deportation of Indian nations and curbs on H-1B visas -- strained ties, even as both sides sought to preserve the broader strategic partnership. Yet the year also produced notable highs. Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to the United States and his meeting with President Donald Trump, along with the signing of a 10-year defence cooperation framework , were widely viewed as stabilising moments in an otherwise uneven relationship. The year began on a positive note with Modi travelling to Washington in February for his first bilateral meeting with Trump since the US presidents return to office. Modi was only the fourth foreign leader to be received by Trump within weeks of his inauguration as the 47th president, after the leaders of Israel, Japan and Jordan. The meeting underscored the strategic importance both countries attach to their partnership. Trump and Modi announced plans to negotiate the first phase of a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by the autumn of 2025, with the aim of more than doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. A month earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar sat in the front row inside the US Capitol Rotunda when he attended Trump's inauguration on January 21, representing the Government of India. Hours later, the newly sworn-in Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted Jaishankar , Japan's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Takeshi Iwaya and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong for the first Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the new Trump administration. However, as the months wore on, momentum in the relationship slowed amid growing differences over tariffs and trade. Trump launched global tariff wars in 2025. Heres a recap of his trade actions this year Tariffs and ceasefire In his address to the Joint Session of Congress, Trump criticised India and other countries for the high tariffs they charged on American products, the first of the many statements he made over the course of the year slamming the high levies imposed by India. While Trump described India as a very high tariff nation, members of his administration too did not hold back in their criticism, with his trade adviser Peter Navarro calling India the Maharaja of tariffs. On April 2, which Trump proclaimed as 'Liberation Day', he slapped reciprocal tariffs on countries around the world and announced a 26% discounted reciprocal tariff on New Delhi, which the US president claimed was half of the 52% levies imposed by India on American goods. However, Trump announced on various occasions that a trade deal with India would happen soon. The two nations made significant progress towards a mutually beneficial bilateral trade pact when US Vice President JD Vance visited India and held wide-ranging talks with PM Modi. Vance and Modi announced the Terms of Reference for the bilateral trade agreement between the US and India. It was around the time that Vance was in India that a horrific terror attack took place on April 22 in Pahalgam perpetrated by The Resistance Front, a proxy of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, in which 26 civilians were killed. In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor , targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. On May 10, the fourth day of the conflict, Trump suddenly announced on his Truth Social page that the US had brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. And since May 10, Trump has now repeated the claim more than 70 times that he solved the conflict between India and Pakistan and that he used trade to bring the fighting to an end. In June, Modi and Trump were scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, but Trump returned to Washington early. The two leaders, however, spoke on June 17, a 35-minute phone call. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that Modi clearly conveyed to Trump that at o point during the days following Operation Sindoor was there any discussion, at any level, on an India-US Trade Deal, or any proposal for a mediation by the US between India and Pakistan. Trump has been critical of India's purchases of Russian oil and, in August, imposed an additional 25% levy on Indian imports, bringing the total tariffs imposed on India to 50% , among the highest in the world. US lawmakers have condemned the tariffs imposed by Trump on India, with Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi saying the levies place an unnecessary strain on Washington's relationship with Delhi. Indian state-backed refinery halts Russian oil amid growing US pressure Mass deportations and H-1B crackdown After Trump took office in January, his administration launched a wide-ranging immigration crackdown, including large-scale deportations of foreign nationals. More than 3,200 Indian nationals were deported, many of whom were reportedly handcuffed and shackled during their journeys. The Trump administration has also intensified its crackdown on immigration, both legal and illegal, imposing new and stringent restrictions on visas such as H-1B , which are used by a large number of Indian professionals to live and work in the US. Describing abuse of the H-1B programme as a national security threat, Trump signed a proclamation imposing a USD 100,000 fee on new H-1B visas, a move that caused widespread panic, confusion and concern among Indian professionals. Later, Trump also appeared to defend the H-1B visa programme, saying America has to bring in talent from around the world as it does not have certain talents in the country. Even as Washington and New Delhi dealt with these complications, there were areas of cooperation between the two sides that stood out this year. Highlighting the strong counter-terrorism cooperation, the US extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Further, the US designated The Resistance Front as a foreign terrorist organisation . The two countries also signed a 10-year defence framework pact in October as a signal of growing bilateral strategic ties even as Washington vowed to work closely with New Delhi to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth signed the framework agreement for the 'US-India major defence partnership' pact following their wide-ranging talks in Kuala Lumpur amid efforts by the two sides to repair ties. Despite challenges in bilateral ties, conversations between Trump and Modi underline the strategic importance of the relationship. Modi recently said he had a very warm and engaging conversation with Trump, and they reviewed the progress in bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity, Modi said. Trump, who has described Modi as a great friend of mine and a great Prime Minister, has indicated he could travel to India next year. There is bipartisan consensus in Washington over the strategic and geopolitical importance of strong India-US ties. All candidates must fight Pune civic polls on familiar clock symbol, Ajit tells Sharad Pawar faction
MUMBAI: Talks between the NCP (SP) and the Ajit Pawar-led ruling NCP over an alliance for the next months Pune civic polls have hit a roadblock, with the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister not agreeing to the Sharad Pawar-led partys proposal for contesting the elections on their respective symbols. According to a senior NCP (SP) leader, Ajit spoke to them for an alliance, and later he also sought the list of candidates for the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation elections. We were shocked that after taking the list of our candidates, he asked us to contest on his partys clock symbol. He even poached some of the aspirants when we were seriously busy in seat-sharing talks. In this case, how can it be called an alliance? If our people get elected on Ajit Pawars party symbol, how will they remain our elected members? They will be officially part of Ajits NCP, the senior NCP (SP) leader said, requesting anonymity. He said top party leaders are against Ajits strategy as it will shrink the NCP (SP)s space in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad region. We wanted to conclude seat sharing, but Ajit Pawar continued to postpone the official announcement on seats for some reason or the other. He also poached several of our possible candidates. He assured them of funds and victory. Now, we are facing a crunch of candidates. We cannot trust Ajit Pawar anymore, said another NCP (SP) leader from Pune, adding that NCP SP city president Prashant Jagtap resigned and joined the Congress in protest. Another leader said Ajits stand has raised suspicion about his intention for an alliance. Our leaders have called a meeting in Mumbai where the decision on an alliance with Ajits NCP will be taken. We should contest as part of MVA, he said on the condition of anonymity. Cracks appear ahead of high-stakes elections According to an NCP(SP) leader, Ajit spoke to them for an alliance, and later he also sought the list of candidates for the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation elections. We were shocked that he asked us to contest on his partys clock symbol, he said.
