Wild elephants' movement disrupts rail, road traffic across Jharkhand
RANCHI: Intensified movement of wild elephants along forest-fringed railway sections under Chakaradharpur Railway Division has once again disrupted the operation of trains. In the wake of frequent movement of wild elephants, Chakradharpur Railway Division has cancelled 18 local trains for the next four days from December 25 to 28. Notably, this is the third time in the last 10 days that the Chakradharpur Railway Division has had to cancel trains. According to officials, 18 local passenger trains have been cancelled for four consecutive days, from December 25 to 28, due to repeated elephant crossings on the ManoharapurJharsuguda rail section under the Chakradharpur Railway Division. The cancelled trains include TatanagarRourkelaTatanagar MEMU, ChakradharpurRourkelaChakradharpur MEMU, TataBarbilTata MEMU, TataGuaTata MEMU, TataChakradharpurTata MEMU and TataKharagpurTata MEMU, among others. The prolonged suspension of local trains has caused severe inconvenience to daily commuters, especially passengers travelling to and from smaller stations who largely depend on MEMU and passenger services. Amid the disruptions, a notable example of wildlife protection was witnessed in the same railway division recently. Recently, a herd of 22 elephants was crossing the railway tracks between Bisra and Bandamunda Cabin 'A' on the Howrah-Mumbai main railway line. Looking at the elephants' safety at risk, the railway authorities took immediate and decisive action, and 12 long-distance trains running on that route were temporarily stopped. Elephant movement disrupts rail traffic in Jharkhand, several trains cancelled Thanks to prompt action, no untoward incident occurred, and the entire herd crossed the tracks safely. Representatives of the Wildlife Trust of India felicitated the railway workers and officials who played a crucial role during the operation. Not only train services, elephant movement has also disrupted road traffic on National Highway-33 on the Ranchi - Ramgarh road on Wednesday evening. According to locals, a herd of 18 wild elephants suddenly appeared near the highway, creating panic among the people travelling on the road. Acting swiftly, the police and district administration suspended vehicular movement from both directionstraffic from Ramgarh was stopped near Mayatungri hill, while vehicles coming from Ranchi were halted in the Kharabera area of the Chuttupalu valley. Following the alert issued by the district administration, the forest departments quick response team reached the spot and safely guided the elephants back into the forest using torches, flashlights and sirens. Vehicular movement was restored after an hour. Notably, a herd of 42 elephants is active in the Ramgarh area, which has killed as many as six people during the last week. The herd, divided into 6-7 separate groups, is roaming in the forests of Mandu, Ghato and Kuju, posing a challenge for the forest officials to control them.
India-UK ties in 2025 shaped by trade pact, migration shifts and shared crises
As the year comes to a close, IndiaUK relations saw a renewed push that went well beyond trade and investment, marked by a series of political, economic and people-to-people developments. The most significant milestone was the long-awaited Free Trade Agreement finally reaching fruition. Alongside it, the ambitious IndiaUK Vision 2035 roadmap also took shape, signalling a broader effort to reset and deepen bilateral ties over the next decade. FTA negotiations dominated headlines for much of the year, with both sides determined to take the deal across the line. The agreement was formally signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to the UK in July. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marking his own first year in office, extended a notably warm welcome to Modi at his countryside residence, Chequers, near London, where the two leaders met over cups of chai. We have agreed a landmark deal with India, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Starmer said, as he accepted Modis reciprocal invitation to lead what he described as the biggest British trade delegation to India ever during a visit planned for October. According to analysis by the UK Department for Business and Trade, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade by more than 25 billion pounds, up from the current 44.1 billion pounds, once it comes into force following ratification by the UK Parliament. This process is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026. India is a growing force on the world stage, on track to have the third largest economy by 2028, Starmer told the House of Commons after his Mumbai visit. Starmer calls India-UK FTA best secured; UK bets big on education, aviation Beyond trade, both governments repeatedly highlighted the ambitious and future-focused IndiaUK Vision 2035, a 10-year roadmap that sets out strategic goals for sustained cooperation across sectors ranging from innovation and defence to education and climate action. One area set to see tangible outcomes from the New Year is higher education. At least nine British universities are finalising plans for overseas campuses in India, reflecting growing demand for UK-linked education options closer to home. These developments have also been viewed as a partial counterbalance to the UK governments increasingly strict immigration policies. According to the latest Home Office data, around 45,000 Indians on study visas and 22,000 professionals on work-related visas left the UK this year, contributing significantly to the downward trend in net migration. Immigration is expected to remain a sensitive issue in 2026, particularly with tougher rules doubling the wait for permanent residency to 10 years for most applicants, a move that could accelerate the exodus of Indian nationals. Another less welcome trend was the growing number of wealthy individuals leaving Britain amid a high-tax environment. Rajasthan-born steel magnate Lakshmi N Mittal, founder of ArcelorMittal and ranked eighth on The Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated fortune of 15.4 billion pounds, was among several super-rich figures reported to be relocating to lower-tax destinations such as Dubai. These moves followed a year of major tax changes under Chancellor Rachel Reeves, including the abolition of the long-standing non-dom status, which had allowed overseas nationals to reduce their UK tax liabilities. Pillar of global stability: India, UK deepen ties with trade push The year also marked the end of an era for the Indian diaspora in Britain, with the passing of several prominent figures. These included hotelier Joginder Sanger, aged 82, and Hinduja Group co-chairman G P Hinduja, aged 85. Caparo Group founder Lord Swraj Paul, 94, and economist Lord Meghnad Desai, 85, both long-serving members of the House of Lords, also died during the year. Tributes poured in from across the IndiaUK corridor, recognising their contributions to business, philanthropy and public life, as well as their enduring role in strengthening bilateral ties. These themes were echoed at a special IndiaUK relations event hosted by the UKs Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London. At the same event, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy expressed condolences over the Delhi car blast in November. That month also saw both countries come together to underline their shared commitment to counter terrorism through a Human Cost of Terrorism exhibition hosted by the High Commission of India in London. This sense of shared concern had earlier been reflected in the UKs response to the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir in April, followed by calls for a swift, diplomatic path forward after India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps across Pakistan. UK Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer noted the deeply personal aspect of the conflict for Britains large Indian diaspora. That community was also directly affected by one of the years darkest tragedies: the Air India crash involving a London Gatwick-bound flight that crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew were killed. Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor from seat 11A of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, later returned to his home in Leicester and spoke publicly about his struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder following the loss of his brother, who was also on board. Investigations into the crash are ongoing in India, with UK aviation authorities granted expert status due to the presence of 53 British nationals on the flight. Meanwhile, long-running legal battles continued in UK courts as several fugitive economic offenders sought by India fought extradition. Vijay Mallya remains out on bail, while diamond merchant Nirav Modis appeal to reopen his extradition case from a London prison was adjourned until March. Arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari won a High Court appeal against extradition on human rights grounds and was discharged from bail. In a separate move, the UK government imposed sanctions on British Sikh businessman Gurpreet Singh Rehal and a group linked to him, marking the first use of the countrys Domestic Counter-Terrorism Regime to disrupt funding networks associated with the pro-Khalistan militant group Babbar Khalsa. Taken together, the year reflected a complex IndiaUK relationship, marked by historic agreements and shared grief, growing economic ambition alongside tightening borders, and a diaspora whose experiences continue to shape the ties between the two countries. Pune civic polls: Congress distances itself from NCP (SP) amid chatter over Pawar Parivaar patch-up
MUMBAI: In a political twist ahead of the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections on January 15, the Maharashtra Congress has decided to contest independently, distancing itself from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) amid reports that the two Pawar factions may join hands. However, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule clarified that no final proposal has been received regarding an alliance with Ajit Pawars faction. Yet, sources revealed that two rounds of meetings have already taken place between the two Pawar parties, with a final announcement expected in the coming days. Terming the potential alliance unholy, Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, If both the NCPs join hands, then Congress will not be part of this unholy alliance for the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections. He added that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar must sever ties with the BJP and step down from the government before seeking Congress support. Wadettiwars remarks highlighted the deep ideological divide. NCP enjoys power with the communal forces in the state and central government, but it wants the support of secular forces to defeat the BJP in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, which is not possible at all. The Congress party is firm in its secular and progressive ideology and will not compromise it in any way. Therefore, the Congress leadership will contest these two polls on its own and show our strength, he said. On the other hand, Sule underlined the distinction between state-level politics and local body elections, stating, The NCP shared power with the Congress for more than 15 years, but it never tied up with the Congress for local body polls. Local polls are fought separately to develop and nurture local leadership. This time, we also conveyed to our cadre and local leaders to form the alliance based on the ground situation in their respective areas. There should not be party politics at the local level because the local polls are completely different than state and Lok Sabha polls. Meanwhile, the reports of a potential NCP merger have caused ripples within the party. Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP)s Pune city president and former Mayor of Pune, Jagtap, resigned in protest, citing ideological differences. Sources suggest he is likely to join Congress. Thackerays have joined hands after 20 years, but many challenges loom on the road to the BMC

Flash strike by platform, gig workers receives lukewarm response; mega strike on New Year's eve
NEW DELHI: The Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT) announced a flash strike on Thursday demanding for better wages and a national policy for gig and platform workers. Nearly 40,000 workers in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru participated in the protests. There are nearly one crore platform workers in India. A mega strike has been planned on December 31, which is expected to create disruption in the e-commerce delivery market. Shaik Salauddin, National General Secretary of Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) told TNIE , We want the government to come out with a Policy for gig and platform workers with a fixed minimum wage. We are aspiring for a minimum wage of Rs 35 per delivery, when the distance touches upto 4 km. At present, the delivery person gets Rs 7 or Rs 10 or Rs 15 depending on the destination. It needs to be regularised completely. While workers get paid extra for their services on holidays, they demand for a permanent hike in wages. We have decided upon December 31 as the demand for deliveries will be very high around that time and we want the employers to take notice of the protest, Salauddin added. Elaborating on the flash strike, he said, We announced it only yesterday (Wednesday). It takes some time for the message to percolate across the country. A good number did not take part for fear of their employers blacklisting them. By flash strike, we mean workers in a particular zone announcing they are on strike for an hour or two and not carrying out any deliveries during the period. This is the biggest strike we have done so far, he said. In Hyderabad there was a bike rally at Gachibowli Kondapur where over 2,000 workers took part. The revised Labour Codes has mandated bringing the workers into the social security fold. Asked about it, the national president of IFAT, Prashant Bhagesh Sawardekar, said, The reforms have merely been announced. The implementation has not happened. If it is going to take place after ten years, it will not help the struggling workers. ID blocking is a major issue among gig workers. The employee is barred from working for the platform anymore. There is a ten-minute delivery option. Some customer complains it was not done and the ID gets blocked by the company and he cannot work on the platform anymore, he said. Employees of Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon and Flipkart took part in the strike on Thursday, he claimed. An official release said the protest was against unsafe working conditions, unfair pay,ID blocking and denial of dignity and social security to gig workers across the country.
