Record-Breaking Voter Turnout in Maharashtra's 2024 Assembly Elections
Maharashtra's 2024 Assembly elections have set a new record with a voter turnout of 65.11%, the highest since the 1995 state elections. This represents a significant increase compared to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2019 Assembly elections, which saw voter participation at 61.39% and 61.4%, respectively. The heightened turnout is expected to be a crucial factor in determining the state's next government, with election results set to be announced on November 23. This year's voter turnout not only exceeded previous numbers but also marked the highest participation in three decades, last seen in 1995 when the turnout reached 71.7%. Factors Influencing the Surge The record-breaking turnout is likely influenced by intense campaigning and ongoing issues such as reservation debates and corruption allegations. This election is also unique, as it marks the first time that both Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are contesting as divided parties. Campaigns and Alliances The increase in voter engagement is largely attributed to the vigorous efforts of both the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). In the previous Lok Sabha elections, the Mahayuticomprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, and NCPsecured 42.71% of votes, while the MVAconsisting of Congress, Shiv Sena UBT, and NCP SPgarnered 43.91%. The 3.5% rise in voter turnout could be decisive in this close contest. Additionally, the number of registered voters has grown by 9.5%, with the current total standing at approximately 9.69 crore, compared to 8.85 crore in 2019. Statements from Key Leaders Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed optimism that the increased voter participation would benefit the ruling Mahayuti coalition. He highlighted that historically, a higher voter turnout has worked in favor of the BJP. In contrast, Congress state chief Nana Patole emphasized that the strong turnout reflects public enthusiasm, suggesting a possible MVA victory. He said that voters are eager for a government dedicated to their welfare. Urban vs Rural Voter Turnout Provisional data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) shows a higher voter turnout in rural regions compared to urban areas. Kolhapur district led with a turnout of 76.25%, while Mumbai had the lowest at 52.07%. In Kolhapur's Karvir constituency, 84.79% of voters cast their ballots, in a tight contest between Congress candidate Rahul Patil and Shinde Sena's Chandradip Narke. Meanwhile, South Mumbai's Colaba area reported only 44.49% turnout, with BJP's Rahul Narvekar facing Congress's Hira Dewasi. In the Baramati constituency, featuring a face-off between Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his nephew Yugendra Pawar from NCP (SP), voter participation reached 71.03%, higher than 2019's 68.82%. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency reported a provisional 59.85% turnout, while Fadnaviss Nagpur South West had 54.49% participation. Exit Poll Projections Following the conclusion of voting, exit polls hint at an edge for the Mahayuti alliance over the MVA. The winning coalition needs at least 145 seats in the 288-member assembly to form the government. Predictions from various agencies show the following: Matrize: 150-170 seats for Mahayuti, 110-130 for MVA. Chanakya Strategies: 152-160 seats for Mahayuti, 130-138 for MVA. People's Pulse: 175-195 seats for Mahayuti, 85-112 for MVA. Pradeep Gupta from Axis My India announced that additional exit poll data would be released on November 21, while CVoter might share its analysis on Thursday. Historically, exit polls have faced challenges in accurately predicting results. Previous discrepancies were observed during both Lok Sabha and recent Haryana Assembly elections, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding these projections. Kerala: Kadalundi government schools wall transcends geographical boundaries
KOCHI: A wall is not just brick and mortar. It represents a regions culture and the technology employed in its construction. In a matter of pride for residents, a wall of Government Fisheries LP School at Kadalundi will adorn Wall House, a dream project executed by Vikram Divecha, a visiting assistant professor in Arts and Art History at the New York University in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Though the school was established in 1921, the wall selected for the Wall House project is only 26 year old. The building was constructed using laterite stone in 1999, but the authorities decided to demolish it as it was declared unfit. Wall House is envisioned as an indoor centre encasing hundreds of walls and facade sections extracted from buildings slated for demolition across the globe. In this undertaking of an urgent archiving of the present, each wall is selected by local communities and researchers, a process of shifting of authorship that challenges the notion of traditional museology, Vikram told TNIE. At its core, these walls are about people. Once released from architecture, they hold the potential of being reborn as a social object. Each wall serves as a starting point for expansive sociocultural mappings of time and place. The wall fragments stand in as bearers of histories of tenants, infrastructure, materiality, aesthetics, and culture. A gift to the future, these community of walls will become ambassadors of an alternative and inclusive cultural history, he explained. Vikram said he always knew a wall from Kerala will hold special meaning for Malayalis in the UAE. It was fate that I was approached by the Faizal and Shabana Foundation about salvaging a wall from a school in Kerala. This exactly fits my approach as I want local communities to select the wall. The removal and transportation of the wall is funded by Jameel Arts Centre, he said. The wall of Kadalundi Government Fisheries LP School being ransported in an open container Transporting wall took 8 days by road, cost Rs 1.4L Headmistress P Reena said it was a matter of pride for the school that a wall of its demolished building will be displayed at the Wall House in Abu Dhabi. We were approached by the foundation seeking permission to preserve the wall, when we decided to demolish the building. The wall features a picture representing Kerala culture, Reena said. Ceekay Global Trading Co in Kozhikode, owned by Kerala Exporters Forum secretary Munshid Ali, is transporting the wall. The biggest challenge was taking the wall from Kadalundi to the Kochi port, said Munshid. Though the distance from Kozhikode to Kochi is only 200 km, it took eight days for the trailer truck carrying the wall to reach Kochi. The 18-wheel low floor vehicle brought from Telangana had to take the Kozhikode-Palakkad route to avoid disruption of traffic. We decided to move the trailer only during night, but it was a Herculean task to remove the low-hanging power cables, he said. The normal fare to transport a container from Kozhikode to Kochi is `30,000, but Munshid had to pay `1.4 lakh due to the risks involved in transportation. The wall was loaded onto an open container brought from Mumbai by Sree Trans Logistics on Wednesday. Cargo vessel SSL Kaveri will set sail from Kochi port to Jebel Ali Port in UAE with the wall on Thursday.

44.7 per cent Muslim families have at least one member abroad
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More people from Muslim households in Kerala opt to migrate abroad. Among migrant families those having at least one member abroad Muslims comprise the majority (44.7%) followed by Hindus (38.2%) and Christians (17%), says a new research on Keralas migration and standard of living. Among non-migrant families, Hindu households form the majority (63%) followed by Christian (21.2%) and Muslim (15.6%) households. Among Muslim households themselves, around 43% have at least one member in a foreign country. The study also showed that a substantial portion of Kerala households without migrants fall below the poverty line (BPL). Around 42.38% of non-migrant families are in the BPL category, much higher than the state average of 38%. The research, based on the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) 2018 migration study, was carried out by three researchers from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai - Afsal Kalangadan, Muhammad Thalil, and Reshmi Ramachandran Sukumari. Published in September, it revolves around the pivotal role played by international remittances in fostering upward income mobility among migrant households, leading to tangible transformations in their living standards. It shows marked disparities among households with and without migrants across different dimensions like poverty indicators, housing quality, asset ownership and consumer durables. Almost 95% of the households, irrespective of their migration status, possessed valid ration cards. Going by the findings, migrant households not only surpass non-migrant ones in land ownership but also allocate more resources to house construction, positioning a higher proportion of them above the poverty line. When it comes to the standard of living, 42.1% of migrant families have significantly high living standards, while 35.7% fall under the category of middle living standards. Among non-migrant families, it is 28.9% and 31.9% respectively. The low-category of living standards is significantly high among non-migrants (39.2%), compared to migrant families (22.2%). The study revealed that 16.3% migrant families reside in houses categorised as luxurious, while 38.7% live in very good houses. In non- migrant households, it is 10.4% and 27.8%, respectively. A higher proportion of non-migrants live in houses classified as poor (17.8%) and 5.2% of families live in low-cost traditional houses constructed with mud, bamboo or corrugated sheets. However, in migrant families, only 8.2 per cent live in houses classified as poor and 0.7 per cent live in low-cost traditional houses. As much as 4% of migrant families and 5% of non-migrant families live in rented houses. A substantial proportion (14.7%) of non-migrant families constructed houses that cost less than Rs 1 lakh and 30.3% spent between Rs 1-Rs 5 lakh on house construction. However, migrant families allocated a larger house construction budget exceeding Rs 5 lakh. When it comes to possessing land, 74.2% of migrants and 69.7% of non-migrants own properties. In the case of owning televisions, the difference between the two groups is 2.1%. About 59.3% of migrant families use LPG, compared to 54.9% among non-migrant families.

Maharashtra Voting Marred by Hooliganism, MCC Violation Allegations
Mumbai: Maharashtras image of holding peaceful elections was marred on Wednesday as the state witnessed several alleged incidents of distribution of money and hooliganism during the voting. In Nandgaon constituency of Nashik district, Shiv Sena legislator Suhas Kande allegedly threatened independent candidate Sameer Bhujbal with death during a confrontation over accusations of voter fraud. According to the officials, Kande and Bhujbal as well as their supporters had a heated exchange of words at a polling centre in Nandgaon after the independent candidate raised objection over the authenticity of some voters in the segment. As police attempted to intervene, Kande allegedly threatened Bhujbal, stating in Marathi, Tujha murder fix aahe aaj (your murder is fixed today). The threat was captured on video. While Bhujbal has initiated legal proceedings against Kande, the latter, however, said the incident was misrepresented. I did not name Sameer Bhujbal. I only warned those fighting to stop, as it would result in someones death, he said. In the high-profile constituency of Baramati, NCP (SP) candidate Yugendra Pawars mother alleged intimidation and bogus voting by workers of the rival NCP led by sitting MLA Ajit Pawar. When we objected to it, a few people intimidated us and threatened our party activists, said Yugendras mother, Sharmila Pawar. She said a complaint will be lodged with the Election Commission in this regard. Yugendra Pawar, a grandnephew of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar is pitted against his uncle and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in Baramati. However, Ajit Pawar denied the allegations and said that, on the contrary, their party activists were being threatened. Ajit Pawar said, Sharmila Pawars allegations are completely false. If a complaint has been filed, the Election Commission and the police will investigate, he said. In chief minister Eknath Shindes Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency, a case has been filed against the Shiv Sena UBT candidate Kedar Dighe for allegedly possessing liquor and cash. Kedar Dighe is the nephew of late Anand Dighe, a mentor of CM Shinde. According to the FIR filed at the Kopri police station, Kedar Dighe and a few others were allegedly caught with envelopes of cash and bottles of liquor at Ashtavinayak Chowk around 2 am. Kedar Dighe has been charged under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code for undue influence in an election. However, he has denied the allegations against him. On the social media platform X, Kedar Dighe wrote that nothing wrong was found in his car. He claimed that the incident was an attempt by his opponents to defame him and he had personally brought the car to the police station. He also called the situation politically motivated. A polling booth was vandalised and a worker of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) was assaulted in Parli constituency, from where minister Dhananjay Munde of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP is seeking re-election. Madhav Jadhav, a local leader of the Sharad Pawar-led party was assaulted in Parli and the video of the assault went viral on social media, after which a polling booth at Ghatnandur in the constituency was vandalised. Some people entered the polling booth at Ghatnandur, threw the EVM on the ground and damaged the furniture in the booth, the official said. Beed Collector Avinash Pathak said that after some persons tried to damage EVMs at Ghatnandur, the administration replaced the EVMs and voting resumed. Three unidentified persons allegedly opened fire at Shiv Sena candidate Bhausaheb Kambles car in Shrirampur in the early hours of Wednesday. The three persons riding two motorcycles targeted Kambles car on the day of polling. The bullets, however, didnt hit the car and Kamble, a police official said. Sanjay Nirupam, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena candidate from Dindoshi in Mumbai, has alleged that his party worker was attacked by activists of rival Shiv Sena (UBT). The attack was carried out by Muslim supporters of Shiv Sena (UBT), he claimed. Hundreds of Muslim workers of Shiv Sena (UBT) were trying to influence voters and obstructing, Nirupam said. NCP (SP) spokesperson Nitesh Karale from Wardha constituency claimed that he was assaulted by two BJP supporters near a polling station. He said the incident took place at Umri Meghe when he was returning after casting his vote. Karale said he filed a police complaint about the alleged assault. A flying squad of the Election Commission seized Rs 60 lakh in the Rajura constituency in Chandrapur district. Poll officials raided a house at Gadchandur and confiscated the cash and some campaign material.

Maharashtra records 60% voter turnout
New Delhi: An estimated 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the Maharashtra Assembly elections on Wednesday, where the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is making a determined bid to retain power and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition is hoping to continue its good showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Till 5 pm, the Election Commission recorded the electorate turnout in the state at an impressive 58.22 per cent. Assuming that the voters turn out in large numbers in the last hour, the voting percentage is expected to swell further. Urban voter apathy continued to bog down the western state, particularly in Mumbai, Pune and Thane regions but the rural and semi-urban areas compensated to keep the overall poll percentage dignified. The voting began in the state at 7 am and after a sluggish beginning, the electorate turnout started to pick up later. Naxal affected Gadchiroli district witnessed the highest turnout at 69.63 per cent in the state. The ECI lamented that despite a range of measures taken by it for ease of voting besides motivational campaigns, urban voters in Maharashtra continued their dismal record of low participation in cities including Mumbai, Pune and Thane. Mumbai City recorded 51 per cent while Mumbai suburban was 55.07 per cent. Thane has a dismal 53.57 per cent and Pune 57.66 per cent. In 2019, Mumbai city was 48.22 per cent and Mumbai suburban was 51.28 per cent. In Mumbai, celebrities spurred on voters to show up at the polling booths and fulfil their responsibilities. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar voted along with his family. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, Union minister Nitin Gadkari were also among the early voters. NCP leader Ajit Pawar and his wife Sunetra Pawar cast their vote at Katewadi in Baramati area of Pune district. Lok Sabha MP and NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule and her daughter cast their votes in Baramati. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed confidence that the Mahayuti government will get a thumping majority as people will vote for development and work done by his regime. People have seen their (Maha Vikas Aghadis) two-and-a-half years of rule vis-a-vis the work done by us in the same amount of time. People will vote for development and for the work done by us, Shinde said. Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole said that his party will emerge as the largest party and the MVA will form the government in Maharashtra. There is significant enthusiasm among the people, and the self-respecting citizens of Maharashtra will elect a government that prioritizes the states welfare. Considering the publics response, the Congress party will emerge as the largest party in the state. The formation of a Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state is certain, he said.

Sule, Patole initiate legal action against BJPs bitcoin fraud accusation
Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Supriya Sule and Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on Tuesday denied the allegations of Bitcoin misappropriation. They have initiated legal action against former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ravindranath Patil and the BJP for making the false accusations on the eve of voting for Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024. Mr. Patil accused them of misappropriating Bitcoins from a 2019 cryptocurrency fraud case and using the same to fund the ongoing Maharashtra assembly elections. Mr. Patil on Tuesday alleged that former Pune police commissioner Amitabh Gupta and former deputy commissioner of police Bhagyashri Nautake, who was handling the cybercrime investigations, were involved in the misappropriation of Bitcoins at the behest of Ms. Sule and Mr. Patole. He also named one Gaurav Mehta, an employee of an audit firm. Mehta sent me some voice notes he had received on WhatsApp. There were three audio messages from Supriya Sule where she asks for cash in exchange for bitcoins. She also says that he (Gaurav Mehta) does not need to worry about inquiry, they will handle it when they come to power, Mr. Patil said. The former IPS officer also alleged that he received few more audio clips from Mr. Mehta, which were the alleged conversations between Mr. Gupta and Mr. Patole, who was asking why there was a delay in cash conversion and the former Pune police commissioner assuring the Congress leader that four crypto wallets had been created and the transactions were done from these wallets. The BJP immediately sought explanation from Ms. Sule, Mr. Patole and their parties on the allegations. The party also posted four audio clips on its official X account. Denying the allegations, Ms. Sule said, All this is conjecture and innuendo. I am ready for a public forum debate with any BJP representative at a time and date of their choice. Mr. Patole also denied the allegations. The BJP in connivance with the media has attempted to defame me and my party by making false accusations. As the fourth pillar of democracy, the media should have reported BJPs allegations responsibly. It is unfortunate that few people are mischievously trying to defame us on BJPs instruction. In such a situation, I have no other option than to take legal action, he said. Advocate Ravi Jadhav, general secretary of Maharashtra Congress, has filed the complaint on behalf of the Congress leader against Mr. Patil and the BJP with the ECI and the cyber crime police station. Some reports indicated that the audio clips were generated using Artificial Intelligence. However, NCP leader Ajit Pawar said that he has worked closely with Mr. Patole in the past and Ms. Sule is his sister, so he recognise their voice. The audio clip has their voices, I can figure out from their tone. An inquiry will be done and everything will be clear, he said. After the allegations surfaced, the Enforcement Directorate also swung in action and conducted searches at the Raipur premises of Gaurav Mehta, who is accused of collecting bitcoins worth around Rs.6,600 from his investors by promising them 10 per cent monthly returns. The ED is probing the money laundering aspect in connection with the police cases filed in Maharashtra and Delhi.

Anmol Bishnoi has sought asylum in the US to avoid deportation to India: Sources
NEW DELHI: The brother of notorious jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, Anmol, who is wanted in India for several high-profile murder cases, has applied for political asylum in the United States following his arrest by immigration officers in that country last week. Sources indicated on Wednesday that this move might obstruct Indian agencies attempts to have him deported. Notably, Anmol was first detained and subsequently arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in California for entering the country using fake documents. According to sources, ICE documents indicate that he is currently being held at the Pottawattamie County Jail in Iowa. Interestingly, Anmols arrest might have been facilitated by information shared by the Indian government regarding his illegal entry into the US. Sources suggested that he may have deliberately allowed himself to be arrested by US authorities as part of a strategy to seek asylum. This development is likely in response to efforts by the Mumbai Police to extradite him from the US in connection with multiple cases registered against him. However, sources added that this move diminishes the likelihood of the wanted gangster being deported to India or handed over to authorities in another country. Anmol has initiated asylum proceedings through legal channels, they said. Indian agency officials noted that the US legal system tends to favor granting bail in such cases. They cited the precedent of Goldie Brar, who was arrested but later released by US authorities. Anmol Bishnoi might be first extradited to Canada, later to India According to the agencies, Anmol fled India in 2023 using a fake passport and emerged as a key figure in the Bishnoi gangs operations after his brother Lawrence was arrested. Anmol is wanted in multiple criminal cases, including the high-profile shooting outside Bollywood actor Salman Khans Mumbai residence and the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. More recently, his name has been linked to the October murder of former Maharashtra minister and veteran politician Baba Siddique. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also named Anmol as an accused in its charge sheets for two cases. In July, a Mumbai court issued a non-bailable warrant against him, and the NIA recently announced a reward of 10 lakh for information leading to his arrest. Dismal record continues: EC on low Maha turnout
The Election Commission expressed disappointment over the continued low voter turnout in urban areas of Maharashtra despite their efforts to increase participation. Despite motivational campaigns and measures for ease of voting, cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane recorded a dismal voter turnout. While Maharashtra recorded an overall voter turnout of 58.22 percent as of 5 PM, Jharkhand saw a higher turnout of 67.59 percent. The EC attributed the low turnout to urban apathy, a trend observed in previous state and parliamentary elections.

Maharashtra assembly polls: 'Dismal record' of metropolitan voters continues, say EC
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Wednesday lamented that despite a range of measures taken by it for ease of voting besides motivational campaigns, urban voters in Maharashtra continued their dismal record of low participation in cities including Mumbai, Pune and Thane. Polling for assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand concluded on Wednesday with the former recording 58.22 per cent voter turnout as of 5 PM and the latter 67.59 per cent, surpassing the 67.04 per cent voting in the corresponding assembly seats in 2019. Maharashtra with 58.22 per cent polling is likely to cross the 2019 figures as voting still underway in the state, EC said. While Maharashtra had assembly polls in a single phase, Jharkhand had polls in two phases. The poll watchdog said special emphasis was placed on combating urban apathy owing to the trend of low voter turnout witnessed in urban centres in Maharashtra in past state and parliamentary elections. More than 1,185 polling stations were set up in high rise buildings and societies and various awareness and mass mobilisation campaigns were organised ahead of the polls involving film celebrities, EC's state and national icons, to nudge urban and young voters. Urban apathy is a phenomenon where voters in urban areas, especially youths, prefer to stay at home and do not turn up at polling stations on voting day.
