Amit Shah says Bal Thackeray wouldve hugged PM Modi over Op Sindoor; Sena (UBT) hits back

Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed on Monday that had Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray been alive, he would have hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the success of 'Operation Sindoor'. Addressing a public event in Maharashtra's Nanded, Shah slammed the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), saying it mocked the multi-party delegations visiting partner countries to convey India's message of zero tolerance against terrorism as 'baraat' (wedding party). Had Balasaheb Thackeray been alive, he would have hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the success of Operation Sindoor, he said at a public event in Maharashtra's Nanded. The Centre has sent seven multi-party delegations to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror. I don't know what has happened to the Uddhav Sena. They are calling the delegations a baraat even though their own members are a part of it, said Shah, who is on a two-day tour of Maharashtra. Later, Ambadas Danve of Sena (UBT) retorted that Bal Thackeray would not have allowed those who etrayed the Shiv Sena even to his doorstep. Bal Thackeray would have asked, 'Where are those six (terrorists) who killed Hindus by asking their religion?'. He also would have asked when the country was united, who put pressure to declare a ceasefire with Pakistan, he wrote on X. Danve also targeted Shah for mentioning the Marathwada Water Grid during his address. The file concerning the project was sent to the Centre for approval. Shah forgot to tell what happened with this file later. For the past ten years, the BJP has been speaking about getting water from the Konkan and Krishna basin to Marathwada. But not a single drop has come to the region, Danve added. The Shiv Sena and the BJP were allies in the state for decades before parting ways in 2019. After the Sena split in 2022, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde got its name and symbol. While the Shiv Sena under Shinde is a part of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, the Uddhav faction is a partner in the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi.

Sikh, Muslim leaders join hands to oppose Waqf Amendment Bill, call it threat to minority rights

CHANDIGARH: In a rare show of interfaith solidarity, the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), known as the mini parliament of Sikhs, have come together to oppose the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, calling it a direct interference in the affairs of minority communities. Leaders from the Muslim community have also extended their support, vowing to strengthen communal harmony and confront shared challenges. The SGPC stated that the Bill represents direct interference by the central government in minority-related matters. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said, It is a direct interference by the Centre Government in minority-related matters. He asserted that the Bill was introduced without consulting the concerned parties, which has led to significant controversy. Dhami remarked that it appears the government intends to curtail minority rights and administer matters according to its own agenda. He emphasised that the SGPC has always been committed to protecting the rights of minorities and opposes any decision that goes against minority communities. Dhami also pointed out that the Centre Government has previously attempted to suppress minorities through measures such as the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code, which directly interfered with the personal laws and religious beliefs of various communities. Similarly, the Agniveer recruitment scheme, instead of direct recruitment into the Indian Army, is an attempt to take away the reservation rights of minorities. Another example is the governments imposition of mandatory helmet-wearing rules for Sikh soldiers, which faced widespread opposition. He stated that the government should refrain from interfering in minority affairs without consulting them. He stressed that minority communities have the full right to preserve their heritage and religious institutions, and laws like the Waqf (Amendment) Bill are an attempt to weaken these rights. Akal Takhts acting Jathedar Kuldip Singh Gargaj said, This country belongs to everyone and every community has the right to live here with happiness. He questioned, Why, when it comes to suppressing minority rights, bills are passed swiftly, but where are the bills to protect minority rights? He stated that the dignity and respect of all communities should be preserved and no one has the right to deprive anyone of their rights. He emphasised that no action should make any community feel that their rights are being taken away. A delegation of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj in Amritsar on Friday to discuss matters related to the Waqf Bill, which has been passed by Parliament. They discussed the common challenges faced by both communities, deepening interfaith cooperation, and reinforcing communal harmony between the Sikh and Muslim communities. Gargaj said the meeting with the members of the more-than-century-old organisation of Muslim scholars was aimed at deepening interfaith cooperation, addressing common challenges, and reinforcing communal harmony between the Sikh and Muslim communities. A member of the Jamiat delegation, Javed Siddiqui, said, For years, we have maintained close ties with Akal Takht Sahib to ensure that any emerging issues are resolved collectively and peacefully. Our goal is to protect the rights of all communities. The last time major Sikh bodies and activists, despite strong differences among themselves, appeared on the same page to strongly oppose a bill was when the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government pushed through an amendment in the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925, for the free telecast of Gurbani Kirtan from Darbar Sahib, Amritsar. Their main objection was that the Punjab government was amending the Gurdwara Act on its own without consulting the SGPC or Sikh bodies, which would set the wrong precedent for future governments amending the Act further according to their own wishes and opening the way for interference in Sikh religious and institutional affairs. The Sikh community also opposed the amendment by the Maharashtra government to the Nanded Sikh Gurdwara Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib Board Act, 1956, in February 2024, which effectively allowed the government to take complete control over deciding who would be president of the 17-member board and to have a majority of members of its choice.

Punjab Congress, AAP, SAD oppose Waqf Amendment Bill

CHANDIGARH: Punjab's Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have opposed the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 , alleging that the Modi Government will now set sights on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) followed by dilution of the autonomy of Christian institutions. Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said that the relentless assault on minority rights by the Modi government is exemplified by the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Bajwa said, Today, it is the Waqf Act; tomorrow, it will be the SGPC, followed by Christian institutions. The Modi governments agenda is clear: to dismantle the autonomy of religious bodies and impose a majoritarian will. We must resist this erosion of our constitutional rights and stand united against this authoritarian overreach. Addressing the amendments to the Waqf Act, Bajwa said, The inclusion of non-Muslims in key waqf institutions, such as the Central Waqf Council and State Waqf Boards, alongside the appointment of a non-Muslim Chief Executive Officer, signals an unprecedented intrusion into religious autonomy. The Modi government claims this enhances transparency, but it is a clear attempt to erode community representation and control over Waqf properties, he remarked. By centralising decision-making within the state bureaucracy and stripping the Waqf Boards of their authority to declare properties as Waqf, the government is effectively seizing control of religious endowments, he said. He pointed to the repeal of Section 107 of the 1995 Act, which previously exempted Waqf properties from the Limitation Act, 1963, as a move that could legitimise encroachments through adverse possession, further jeopardising Muslim heritage. Centre tables Waqf Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha after passage in lower house Senior SAD leader Daljit S Cheema said, Minorities are an important part of India and no law should be passed without consensus from the community. We passed a resolution against the amendments to the Waqf Board. Central government is increasing the process of nomination and along with that, they are thinking of making non-Muslims a member of the Waqf Board, he said and likened the Waqf reform to the aking over of the Hazur Sahib Board for Sikhs in Nanded. Earlier, the Hazur Sahib board for Sikhs was there, there they increased the nominations and took it over. Now this has started happening with Muslim brothers as well, so the government should stop these things immediately, he said. While on Monday on occasion of Eid, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that the AAP would vehemently oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill introduced by the BJP-led NDA Government. He assured the Muslim community that his government stood firmly with them in rejecting the proposed legislation, which has sparked strong opposition from the Muslim community across the country. Speaking to the media after offering Eid prayers at Malerkotla, Mann emphasised that his government would challenge the Bill at every platform, including the Parliament and the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Our Muslim brethren are opposing this Bill vehemently, and AAP is solidly with them at this hour. We will oppose this legislation tooth and nail, he said. Punjab Police arrest three operatives of Khalistani militant outfit from Bihar

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police has busted a narco-terror module linked to the banned terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) with the arrest of three key operatives from Bihar while they were attempting to flee to Nepal. Director General of Police, Punjab Gaurav Yadav, said here on Saturday that those arrested have been identified as Karandeep Yadav (21), Mukesh Kumar (29) and Sajan Singh (24), all residents of Khandwala Chheharta in Amritsar. The police teams have also recovered three mobile phones and 700 Nepali currency notes from their possession. The development came following meticulous investigation after the arrest of Joban Singh alias Joban and Gurbaksh Singh alias Lala after recovering 290 grams of heroin from their possession. Yadav said that preliminary investigations had revealed that the arrested accused were working on the directions of Pakistan-based BKI mastermind Harwinder Rinda. He said that the probe has revealed that the arrested accused Karandeep Yadav, had delivered the grenades and weapons that were recovered from Tarn Taran in January this year. As per the information, Tarn Taran Police had arrested four operatives identified as Robinjeet Singh alias Robin, Harpreet Singh alias Happy, Navjot Singh alias Nav and Jagdeep Singh alias Jagga. The police recovered two hand grenades and a pistol from their possession. He said that the arrested individuals, who were residing in Amritsars Khandwala and Chheharta areas, have been apprehended from the jurisdiction of Police Station Kumarkhand in Madehpur, Bihar when they were planning to flee to Nepal. The trio accused persons are being brought back to Punjab for further interrogation. Sharing operation details, Amritsar Police Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on reliable inputs, an intelligence-led operation was launched with the lead taken by officers from Chheharta Police Station, Amritsar. As a result, the accused were successfully arrested from Bihar. He said that further investigations are ongoing to establish backward and forward linkages in this case, and more arrests and recoveries are expected in coming days. In this regard, a case has dated March 7 has already been registered under section 21-C of the NDPS Act at Police Station Chheharta in Amritsar. Punjab police arrest three operatives of Khalistani militant outfit In another development, the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Mohali, arrested three operatives of a terror module being run by Pakistan-based BKI terrorist Harvinder Singh alias Rinda. Those arrested have been identified as Jagjit Singh alias Jaggi and Shubham Khelbude, both residents of Nanded in Maharashtra and Gurdeep Singh alias Deepa, a resident of Raipur in Ropar. Police teams have also recovered two weapons including one 12 bore pump-action gun with 15 cartridges and one .32 bore pistol with eight cartridges. This development follows the earlier arrests of Jagdish Singh alias Jagga, Shubhdeep Singh alias Shubh, and Sachindeep Singh alias Sachin in connection with the Nanded murder case. With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in the case has risen to six in this case.
