Punjab BJP chief claims AAP govt provided only 26 days of employment on average under MGNREGA

CHANDIGARH: Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab Government, Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Sunil Jakhar said that the government was acting like an event management company. He claimed that the state government was providing 26 days of employment on average under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and demanded a white paper on the 'corruption' under this scheme over the past four years. His remark came as the government has called a one-day special session of the assembly on December 30, 2025, against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act brought in by the union govenrment, which replaces the 20-year-old MGNREGA. He alleged that the AAP government has failed on every front and has no achievements to count. It keeps rolling out new propaganda every day. It would be better if the government used a special session to discuss the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state and to deliberate on the frequent murders and extortion threats being reported almost daily, he added. Jakhar said that the AAP government was preparing for yet another propaganda exercise. Accusing the Mann government of misleading the poor, Jakhar said the dispensation had got forms filled out and thumb impressions registered, while failing to provide 100 days of employment to poor people. The AAP government is troubled since the Central government is promising to stop corruption in the MGNREGA scheme and provide 125 days of work instead of 100. Talking about the Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhans recent visit to Punjab, he said people from every district highlighted corruption in the MGNREGA scheme. Mann should issue a white paper on the corruption under this scheme over the past four years. During the current fiscal year, the government was providing 26 days of employment on average, whereas in the previous years, it managed just 38 days of employment on average. This exposes the anti-poor face of the AAP government, the drama of convening special sessions is only meant to hide its shortcomings, said Jakhar while referring to earlier special sessions of the assembly He also raised questions on the status of the draft law against sacrilege, which got sent to a select committee. He also asked about the outcome of the special session convened after a charge that crores of rupees were being offered to AAP MLAs for defection. Similarly, the government has been silent on the status of Punjab's agricultural policy he said. To escape accountability for this failure, the government is repeatedly calling special sessions, which will bring no benefit other than placing an additional financial burden on the people of Punjab, Jakhar said. Congress to hit streets to save MGNREGA replaced by VB G RAM Act

Novelty Of Rashid Khan Has Worn Off A Little, Not As Intimidating As Before, Says Kumble Ahead Of IPL 2026

Even Rahul Tewatia: Former India captain Anil Kumble believes IPL 2022 winners Gujarat Titans (GT) can no longer lean heavily on leg-spinner Rashid Khan, saying that the Afghanistan star's impact has diminished and the novelty factor has worn off a little. GT, who bowed out in the Eliminator of IPL 2025, boasted one of the strongest bowling units, but Rashid endured his poorest campaign in the competition. He managed to pick only nine wickets at an average of 57.11 and an economy rate of 9.35. Rashid also conceded 33 sixes - the most by any bowler in a single IPL season - as batters found ways to dominate him. Kumble also felt the Shubman Gill-led franchise would need greater contributions from left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, as well as off-spin bowling all-rounders Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia, to remain competitive in IPL 2026. I think the novelty of Rashid Khan has worn off a little. There are many similar bowlers available now, so he is no longer as intimidating as he was before. His workload has to be managed more, along with bowlers like Sai Kishore. Even Rahul Tewatia and Washington Sundar can contribute more for GT this season, said Kumble, a former RCB player and ex-Punjab Kings head coach, on JioStar. Kumble also felt the Shubman Gill-led franchise would need greater contributions from left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, as well as off-spin bowling all-rounders Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia, to remain competitive in IPL 2026. Holy city tag puts meat, alcohol, tobacco traders in Amritsars walled city at risk

CHANDIGARH: The ban on meat, alcohol and tobacco shops in the walled city of Amritsar, following its notification as a holy city by the AAP-led Punjab government, has put the livelihoods of hundreds of families at risk, casting uncertainty over generations-old businesses. The notification, issued to preserve the sanctity of the area surrounding the Golden Temple, has resulted in around 150 establishments selling meat, fish, alcohol and tobacco being allegedly forced to shut down. Traders and shopkeepers have raised strong objections, saying they were neither given adequate notice nor provided with alternative arrangements. The affected shopkeepers and vendors have decided to meet the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner, the Municipal Corporation Commissioner and the Mayor, and submit a memorandum highlighting their concerns. They held a meeting at Gol Bagh on Friday, during which they argued that instead of covering the entire walled city, the government should have restricted the ban to areas immediately surrounding the Golden Temple and Durgiana Mandir. While stating that they have no objection to the walled city being declared a holy city, Gurjeet Singh, a third-generation owner of Gurjeet Fish Company, said the decision threatens the existence of Punjabs oldest wholesale fish market. There are three major fish markets in Punjab, in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Here in Amritsar, we have 14 commission agents (artiyas) in the wholesale fish market, which has existed for the last 70 years. We procure fish from Vietnam, Himachal Pradesh and other places, and sell it across the state. Our fish even goes to Srinagar, he said. Singh said they have already met the Mayor and will now meet the Deputy Commissioner. Our demand is simple. The fish season is starting from January and runs till April. Until then, we should not be relocated. After that, the government should provide all 14 of us a suitable place together within Amritsar, and not far away, as the market functions collectively, he added. Rajinder Kumar, a fourth-generation fish trader, claimed that there are 18 suppliers, with each shop employing several workers. This was the first wholesale fish market of the state and even today supplies fish across Punjab. With this order, generations of business are affected, he said. We respect the governments decision to maintain the sanctity and holiness of the city, but our concerns must be addressed. Our businesses will be shut and we have not been given adequate time to shift, nor have we been allotted any place to relocate, said another shopkeeper, Saranjit Singh. Amritsar Hotel and Restaurant Association president AK Chattha said that meat, fish and tobacco shop owners operating within the walled city would be severely affected by the ban. A survey conducted by the Amritsar Municipal Corporation has identified around 150 shops and street vendors that are to be removed from the walled city following the notification. Senior Punjab BJP leader Rajinder Mohan Singh Chinna said the decision to grant holy city status to the walled city of Amritsar was not new, noting that a previous SAD-BJP government had taken a similar step. The fish market operating in the walled city should first have been shifted and relocated after being provided a proper place by the government. Only then should this decision have been implemented. Now the question is, where will they go, he said. Calling the notification historic but long overdue, Punjab BJP leader and former bureaucrat Jagmohan Singh Raju wrote to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, demanding a comprehensive rehabilitation policy for shopkeepers, vendors and workers affected by the prohibition. Declaring the walled city of Amritsar as a holy city is a historic step, but it must be implemented with foresight. Sanctity cannot come at the cost of livelihoods. The Chief Minister must direct the administration to immediately identify and survey the affected persons and establishments, provide alternative business sites or zones, and extend financial assistance, compensation or livelihood support during the transition period. Rehabilitation is not a concession; it is a responsibility, he wrote. The ban has also sparked a wider debate. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Kiranjot Kaur said that jhatka meat is a right under Sikh tradition. Tobacco and kutha (halal) remain prohibited in Sikhism, but jhatka aligns with the Gurus hunting traditions. There should not be any ban on meat shops, she wrote in a Facebook post. Meanwhile, a senior Punjab AAP leader said the state government would ensure proper rehabilitation. Those whose businesses have been affected will be provided alternative arrangements in a phased and planned manner. The local administration will consult those affected and work out the best possible and mutually acceptable solution to ensure livelihoods are not affected, the leader said. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had announced on Sunday that the state government had issued a notification granting holy city status to the walled city of Amritsar, Talwandi Sabo and Anandpur Sahib.

PBKS Do Not Have Enough Backup For Yuzvendra Chahal, Says Abhinav Mukund

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Former India cricketer Abhinav Mukund believes the Punjab Kings do not have enough backup for off-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Punjab Kings strengthened their squad with key domestic picks like Vishnu Vinod and Praveen Dubey, along with Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly for middle-order balance in the mini auction. Mukund praised the teams smart additions while noting areas like spin depth that need attention. Analysing the Punjab Kings balanced approach at the table, Mukund said, Punjab Kings didnt need much heading into the auction, having already invested heavily earlier. The only concern is Yuzvendra Chahal not featuring in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy so its unclear if they have enough backup for him. Theyve added Pravin Dubey, a leg-spinner from Karnataka, and Cooper Connolly, whos an exciting left-handed all-rounder capable of batting anywhere from three to five. That versatility definitely adds value to their middle order, Mukund said on JioStar. 2025 In A Nutshell: Bluru's culinary voice showed global awareness and local character

Bengaluru entered 2025 with quiet confidence and a renewed sense of self-belief. Once identified largely with craft beer and casual dining, the city has matured into one of Indias compelling culinary destinations. Innovation, global awareness and local character now coexist with ease, marking a year of consolidation rather than catch up. One of the most significant developments was the rise of a young and assured generation of restaurateurs. Ingredient-driven menus, open fire cooking, local sourcing and playful presentation were matched with pared back spaces that prioritised energy over excess. New ventures such as Riko, ParTTwo, Baan Phad Thai, Crackle, Fireside, Fervor, Circa 11 and Comal brought fresh perspectives and clear identities. These restaurants struck a chord with younger diners who value authenticity, creativity and relevance over formality. Across the city, chefs moved towards tighter and more cuisine-focused menus. Restaurants such as Rosmarino by Abhijit Saha and Pinocchio by Giuseppe delivered comfort with clarity and finesse. Reservation-only favourites, including Sando Club, Guerilla Diner and NARU, remained among the hardest tables to secure, reflecting a growing preference for intimate, focused dining experiences over large format restaurants. Bengalurus chef-driven establishments also continued to gain recognition beyond India. Farmlore stood out for its soil to plate philosophy, progressive tasting menus and deep engagement with local landscapes. Vegetarian dining, supported by inventive mocktail programmes, gained strong momentum. Restaurants such as Kalpaney, GAIA, Phurr, MOAI and Tuk Tuk Thai built loyal and repeat audiences. Hotels responded decisively to the citys evolving food culture. Recognising that diners increasingly seek narrative and creativity, luxury properties refreshed legacy concepts and introduced new ones. The Ritz Carlton with Yan Yan and Zarqash, ITC Gardenia with Cajsa and Edo, Conrad with Indian Durbars celebration of Punjabi heritage, The Park with Italia, The Oberoi with its Decked Out at Lapis series and JW Marriott with The Patio led this shift. Visiting chef collaborations, international pop ups, themed bar takeovers and curated pairing dinners repositioned restaurants as lively social spaces rather than formal dining rooms. The transition from pub-centric drinking to a more nuanced cocktail culture became firmly entrenched in 2025. Intimate bars, chef-influenced beverage programmes and compact speakeasy-style venues reshaped how the city drank. Cocktail menus became concise and narrative-led, with emphasis on technique, clarified cocktails, fermentation and seasonality. Bars such as Sama, Dali & Gala, Muro, Copitas, Siren, Una Hacienda, Aqua, One Floor Down, Mirth, Doubble and Middle Room exemplified this evolution. International recognition for SOKA, ZLB23 and Bar Spirit Forward further cemented Bengalurus reputation as a bar destination to watch. At the same time, neighbourhood favourites such as Bobs Bar, Quarter House, Yaakay Bar and Canteen and Tommys enjoyed renewed attention, proving that affordability and personality remain essential. Old school institutions, including Dolphins, Pecos, 13th Floor and Chin Lung, reaffirmed the enduring appeal of nostalgia. The year also saw a touch of glamour added to the citys dining landscape with the arrival of Kai Bar & Kitchen, Cahoots, Cavore and Yazu Pan Asian Supper Club, bringing polish, energy and theatrical flair. Comfort food continued to anchor Bengalurus dining habits. Pizzas drew devoted followings at Serious Slice, 23rd Street Pizza, La Gioia, and Pizza 4Ps. Pretzels gained popularity at Bcker & Charlie and German BrezelHaus. Burgers from Beyondburg, Smash Guys, Krok, Leons and Truffles remained crowd pullers. Desserts from June Bakehouse, Deliciae, MAKI, Belagio, Amintiri, Lavonne, Nenapu, Conu, Magnolia, Klava, Smoor and Anand satisfied the citys sweet tooth, while queues stayed steady for ice creams at LICK, Milano, Corner House, Ulo and Amadora. Data from a leading food delivery platform revealed shifts in consumption. Late-night orders grew three times faster than dinner orders, with pizzas, burgers, biryanis and cakes dominating demand. Health-focused meals more than doubled, driven by protein-forward choices, calorie awareness and reduced sugar. Indian diners also displayed growing curiosity, with Korean, Vietnamese and Mexican cuisines steadily moving into the mainstream. If one colour defined Bengalurus food and beverage mood in 2025, it was green. Matcha emerged as a defining flavour across cafes and dessert counters, while coffee continued its steady ascent. Specialty roasters spotlighted Indian beans, experimental processing and origin-led storytelling, establishing coffee as a lifestyle marker at The Kind, Trippy Goat, Paper & Pie, Kana by Coffee Mechanics, Araku and Subko. As the city looks ahead to 2026, Bengaluru enters the new year with clarity, confidence and a strong sense of its own culinary voice, shaped by originality, depth and an increasingly discerning dining public.

Ten-year-old border village boy honoured for helping soldiers during Operation Sindoor

CHANDIGARH: Ten-year-old Shravan Singh from Tara Wali village in Mamdot block is located along the Indo-Pak international border in Punjabs Ferozepur district. He was honoured with the Pradhan Mantri Bal Puraskar 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday for his extraordinary courage, compassion and patriotism. The award, the countrys highest civilian honour for children, was conferred on Veer Bal Diwas. Shravan had served water, lassi, milk and tea to Army jawans during Operation Sindoor as swarms of drones entered Indian territory from across the border. His actions, carried out amid heightened tensions, drew widespread appreciation from the Army and the local community. After receiving the award, Shravan, a Class IV student, said he loved helping the soldiers and used to serve them cold water and milk every day. They gave me a special gift, shared meals with me, and even treated me to ice cream. I want to become a soldier and serve the nation when I grow up. I have even bought new clothes for the function, he said. Shravans father, Sona Singh, said jawans had camped in their fields during Operation Sindoor. From the very first day, my son insisted on serving soldiers as he found joy in serving them. He kept taking refreshments to them and enjoyed being in their company. Seeing him bring refreshments and comfort to them made our family proud. He now dreams of joining the Army one day. He never imagined that his younger son would be given such an honour, he said. Shravans mother, Santosh Rani, thanked the Army for recommending her sons name for the award. He dreams of becoming a soldier one day. The jawans became his friends, she said. Earlier, the Army had announced that it would sponsor Shravans education to ensure he continues to grow and achieve his dreams. The Golden Arrow Division of the Army had bestowed upon him the title of Youngest Civil Warrior and decided to support his education. Western Army Commander Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar had felicitated Shravan, highlighting the Armys bond with the people. During the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan on May 7 and 10, swarms of drones were spotted in border villages and towns of Ferozepur. Otherwise, the small village of Tara Wali, just two kilometres from the international border, remains quiet. Shravan has an elder sister studying in Class VII and a younger brother.

Politics over nomenclature of Veer Bal Diwas, Centre tell states to host events in schools

CHANDIGARH: Politics has erupted over the nomenclature of Veer Bal Diwas after the Union government wrote to all states and Union Territories directing them to organise activities in schools on Friday to mark the day, which commemorates the martyrdom of the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. Despite demands from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the Akal Takht, the Congress, several Members of Parliament and Sikh scholars seeking a change in the nomenclature, the Centre has refused to rename Veer Bal Diwas. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rejected the demand, hitting back at its former ally SAD, saying the name was acceptable earlier and became objectionable only after the alliance broke. In a letter sent last week to additional chief secretaries and secretaries of the departments of school education and literacy under the Union Ministry of Education, schools were instructed to organise activities such as drawing, storytelling, essay writing, poem recitation, debates and digital presentations. The instructions apply to all schools, including Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. Veer Bal Diwas is organised annually as a nationwide initiative dedicated to honouring children as the foundation of Indias future. This initiative emphasises nurturing young minds and inspiring them to contribute to the vision of a Viksit Bharat, the letter said. In a subsequent communication dated December 22, the ministry said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the main event at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Friday. On January 9, 2022, the Union government designated December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas to honour the supreme sacrifice of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the younger sons of the 10th Sikh Guru, who were martyred in 1705 at the ages of nine and six, respectively. Delhi Shiromani Akali Dal chief Paramjit Singh Sarna said the demand to rename the observance as Sahibzadey Shahadat Diwas was rooted in historical accuracy, ethical reasoning and the partys long-held position. Sarna recalled that in 2019, the SAD had formally supported replacing Bal Diwas, earlier observed on the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, with a national observance marking the martyrdom of the Sahibzadey of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib. There is no inconsistency, as is being alleged, Sarna said. The party has always maintained that the martyrdom of Sahibzada Baba Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Baba Fateh Singh deserved national recognition. When the Centre instituted Veer Bal Diwas, it acknowledged that position. At the same time, the name attached to a commemoration carries weight, because language shapes how history is understood. He said the phrase Veer Bal, while emotionally evocative, was broad and imprecise and risked obscuring the specific historical event being marked. This is not a general observance of childhood courage. It commemorates a recorded shaheedi in which the Sahibzadey were bricked alive for refusing to renounce their faith. The term Sahibzadey Shahadat Diwas conveys that reality directly, without dilution, he said. Sarna added that aligning the national observance with the terminology Sahibzadey Shahadat Diwas, as articulated by Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, would strengthen public understanding. Recognition without precision reduces history to abstraction. Precision itself is a form of respect, he said. Meanwhile, AAP MP from Anandpur Sahib, Malvinder Singh Kang, wrote to Prime Minister Modi on December 9 on the issue. Akal Takhts acting jathedar, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, also wrote to Sikh MPs urging them to formally request a name change. Congress MLA from Bholath, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, strongly objected to commemorating the martyrdom of the Sahibzadey under the name Veer Bal Diwas, saying it undermines the historical, spiritual and moral magnitude of their sacrifice. Responding to the controversy, BJP Punjab state spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal issued a rebuttal to the Shiromani Akali Dal and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal. Citing an earlier public tweet by Harsimrat, Baliawal said she herself had advocated commemorating the martyrdom of the Sahibzadey under the title Bal Diwas in 2019. He questioned why a term considered appropriate by the Akali Dal until then had suddenly become objectionable after the breakdown of the BJPSAD alliance. Baliawal further pointed out that in 2018, during an event organised at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had expressed concurrence with the name Bal Diwas. He said the present opposition by the Akali Dal contradicted its own earlier stand. BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa also defended the Centres decision, saying the existing name appropriately honours the supreme martyrdom of the Sahibzadey.

Shreyas Iyer To Undergo Assessment At CoE After Resuming Batting Post Spleen Injury

Sydney Cricket Ground: India batter Shreyas Iyer will be reporting to the Board of Control for Cricket in Indias (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for further assessment of his recovery from a spleen injury, following his resuming batting practice in his hometown Mumbai. Iyer, Indias ODI vice-captain, suffered a serious spleen laceration while attempting to take a diving catch of Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25. Subsequent scans at a hospital in Sydney revealed internal bleeding that required immediate hospitalisation and intensive care. He underwent a minor surgical procedure to control the bleeding and was closely monitored by local medical specialists in Australia and India, including the Indian team doctor, before his condition improved and he flew back home. Today, Iyer will report to CoE, as he flew to Bengaluru from Mumbai earlier in the day. As of now, theres no clarity on how many days he will spend there. It might take about four to six days for the medical team to assess him thoroughly. After that, the CoE will decide the further course of action and set clear timelines in terms of his total recovery and likelihood of being match fit, said sources familiar with the matter to IANS on Thursday. The encouraging part is that Iyer batted for around 30-45 minutes at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) nets in Mumbai, after starting lightweight gym training nearly ten days ago. Even after batting yesterday, he was reported to be okay and has been feeling better about himself. There were no indications of pain or anything else, said another source tracking Iyers recovery. After that, the CoE will decide the further course of action and set clear timelines in terms of his total recovery and likelihood of being match fit, said sources familiar with the matter to IANS on Thursday. Also Read: Live Cricket Score If its felt that his total recovery requires more time, then Iyer can be told to come back for another assessment after either 10 days or one week. After that, if hes deemed match fit, he could play Vijay Hazare Trophy games for Mumbai. But if that doesnt happen, he might play straightaway in IPL 2026, where he captains Punjab Kings, further said sources. Article Source: IANS

CBI files charge sheet against four Punjab Police officers in Colonel Pushpinder Bath assault case

CHANDIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against four Punjab Police officers in the Colonel Pushpinder Bath assault case. According to sources, the apex investigating agency filed the chargesheet in a Mohali CBI court on Wednesday against Punjab Police inspectors Harjinder Singh, Shaminder Singh, Harry Boparai and Ronnie Singh. The charges include grievous hurt and wrongful restraint, among others. However, the attempt-to-murder charge does not figure in the chargesheet. Inspector Ronnie Singh has been named as the main accused. The filing of the chargesheet marks a significant development in the high-profile case, particularly due to the omission of the attempt-to-murder charge at the prosecution stage. The incident took place on the intervening night of March 13 and 14, when Colonel Bath and his son, Angad Singh, were having dinner at a dhaba near Rajindra Hospital. Colonel Bath alleged that a group of men aggressively approached them and demanded that they move their car. One of them threatened to break our legs and then punched me. I lost consciousness. Then they assaulted my son, he had said at the time. When Colonel Bath identified himself as an Army officer, the attackers allegedly snatched his identity card and mobile phone. The Punjab Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) only on March 22, eight days after the incident, following repeated appeals from the officers family. A case was registered against inspectors Harry Boparai, Ronnie Singh and Harjinder Dhillon under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 310, 155(2), 117(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 126(2) (wrongful restraint) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Later, another inspector was named under Sections 299 and 191 of the BNS. In March, Colonel Bath moved the High Court, alleging delay by the Punjab Police in filing an FIR in the assault case involving him and his son by a group of 12 policemen, including four inspectors. The family rejected the special investigation team (SIT) formed by the Punjab Police. In April, the High Court directed the Chandigarh Police to constitute a special investigation team to probe the case and complete the investigation within four months. In July, the High Court transferred the probe to the CBI, a move upheld by the Supreme Court in August, citing concerns over the impartiality of earlier investigations by both the Punjab and Chandigarh Police. M1 Group successfully concluded the third edition of its flagship thought-leadership forum, Samaah 2025 , in Mumbai. The forum witnessed participation from the entire banking spectrum, including public sector banks, private banks, multinational banks, and NBFCs.     A key highlight of the evening was the keynote address by Mr K. Rajaraman, Chairman, International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) , who underscored the significant under-penetration of global trade finance in India. He noted that current factoring and trade credit volumes stand at approximately USD 45 billion , accounting for only about 10% of India’s merchandise exports of nearly USD 425 billion , compared with a global benchmark of around 20% .   Mr Rajaraman highlighted that while initiatives such as TReDS have expanded access to domestic trade finance, particularly for MSMEs, there remains substantial headroom for growth. He emphasised that the future of trade finance lies in technology-led platforms that enhance transparency, mitigate risk, and enable lenders to scale sustainably. With India targeting USD 2 trillion in exports by 2030 , he noted that efficient, low-risk access to trade finance will be critical to achieving this ambition.   Among the key moments of Samaah 2025 was the unveiling of a comprehensive suite of Supply Chain Finance solutions - UFX (Unified Financing Xperience) , developed by MYND Fintech , a subsidiary of M1xchange and a leading digital lending marketplace. At M1 Group, we remain committed to building digital infrastructure that supports sustainable growth and strengthens India’s global trade competitiveness.”   The forum featured several high-impact discussions, including a panel on ‘Improvement of Yields for Banks’ , where industry experts Mr Nagaraj Garla, Executive Director, IDBI Bank , and Mr Deepak Kumar, Senior Executive Vice President, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited , shared insights on enhancing yield performance through innovative financing models, digital enablement, and risk-optimised credit frameworks. The session was moderated by Mr Amit Sachdev, Co-founder & COO, M1 Group , and offered actionable perspectives for banks navigating an evolving financial landscape.   The event also featured eminent speakers for a panel discussion, such as Mr Ashutosh Sharma, Chief General Manager, IFSCA, Ms Hirva Mamtora, Managing Director & CEO, India Exim Finserve , and Mr Vasumitra Pandey, CEO - Lighting & Durables, SURYA Roshni Ltd. , who highlighted ITFS platforms as a game changer in global trade finance , underlining India’s potential to emerge as a hub for cross-border financing innovation. This permits the financiers (Banks/NBFCs) to bid against the verified and approved invoice. Once the supplier accepts the bid, the payment is processed in 24 hrs. and credited to the MSME's bank account. Man of the moment: K Gowtham speaks following his retirement announcement

The hall at the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in the city briefly fell silent before it was filled with camera flashes and the sharp rhythm of shutter clicks. Standing under the lights, with KSCA president and former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad by his side, and in the presence of his close friends and family members on Monday, all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham announced his retirement from competitive cricket. As the noise of the press conference faded and the evening light settled, Gowtham, looking calmer and perhaps a little lighter than he was minutes before, sat down to reflect. Inside the hall, though emotions lingered, clarity began to take shape. Retirement does break hearts and it was emotional for me as well. But there are things Im genuinely looking forward to, especially spending a lot more time with my family, he says. As he looks back, theres one feeling that remains unshakable, the moment he wore Team India colours. Every cricketer dreams of playing for their country. I was fortunate to be one of those. At that moment, you just want to freeze time and hold on to it forever, he reflects with sparkle in his eyes. Even as he steps away from the pitch, Gowtham isnt stepping away from cricket. Instead, he will be staying within the system, mentoring, contributing and nudging the next generation forward. Cricket has given me everything. If there is an opportunity, I want to be around the game, he shares. Gowtham during his stint with CSK Starting with Rajasthan Royals, the 37-year-old ruled the Indian Premier League (IPL) and went on to be a part of league biggies, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kings XI Punjab. He became the most expensive uncapped player in the history of IPL back in 2021, when he was signed by CSK for a whopping `9.25 crore. CSK is also the one who instantly softens his tone. Choosing one is tough from the IPL teams. But, I would say CSK felt more like a family. Fun, surprises, ups and downs, just like a real family, he admits. Yet the format that leaves the deepest imprint on his heart is the long, quiet burn of red-ball cricket, which, he thinks, he has contributed towards quite decently and will also miss the most. Perhaps that explains the emotional resilience that shaped his journey, as he speaks about the low points and sporadic opportunities during his IPL appearances ,My life has been a lot more failure than success. But that made me mentally strong. It taught me to control only what I can. I lived by that, he reveals. The boy who walked into the academy at 13 never really left; he only grew up with the game. He smiles, remembering Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh as his childhood heroes, adding that he was nicknamed Bhajii for imitating Singhs style. I was a ball boy then. I was fortunate enough to bowl to Sachin during a series against Australia at Chinnaswamy. He was busy then, obviously. He is serious when he prepares and we would be fooling around. When I started bowling, he said, Arey Bhajji, tumhara competitor agaya! (Hey Bhajji, here comes your competitor!). With the retirement, Gowtham isnt saying goodbye, hes simply turning a page, toward family, mentorship and a quieter yet deeper connection with the game, with his future plan being to keep contributing to the game. And in that lies the grace of his next innings.

CAQM issues show cause notice to six thermal power plants near Delhi-NCR over biomass co-firing

NEW DELHI: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the NCR and adjoining areas has issued Show Cause Notices to six coal-based Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) located within a 300 km radius of Delhi. These notices were issued due to non-compliance with the mandatory provisions regarding the co-firing of pellets or briquettes made from crop residue, as specified under the Environment (Utilisation of Crop Residue by Thermal Power Plants) Rules, 2023. The affected power plants include two in Punjab, three in Haryana, and one in Uttar Pradesh. The plants in Punjab are Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL Vedanta) in Mansa and PSPCL Guru Hargobind Thermal Power Plant in Lehra Mohabbat. In Haryana, the plants are Panipat Thermal Power Station (PTPS) in Panipat, Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Station (DCRTPS) in Yamunanagar, and Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Plant (RGTPP) in Hisar. The plant in Uttar Pradesh is Harduaganj Thermal Power Station, operated by UPRVUNL. This action follows a detailed review of compliance for FY 2024-25, based on data provided by the Ministry of Power, Government of India. The rules require all coal-based TPPs to utilize a minimum of 5% biomass pellets or briquettes made from crop residue along with coal, with a minimum threshold of over 3% co-firing prescribed for FY 2024-25 to avoid penalties in the form of Environmental Compensation (EC). These statutory provisions were introduced to promote the management of paddy straw, reduce incidents of stubble burning, and mitigate air pollution in the NCR and neighboring areas. However, the compliance status of the following TPPs has been found unsatisfactory during FY 2024-25, with biomass co-firing levels well below the mandated thresholds. As a result, Show Cause Notices proposing the imposition of EC have been issued to the concerned plants. The total Environmental Compensation proposed for these six TPPs amounts to approximately Rs 61.85 Crore. Recognising a significant lag in compliance and in light of directions from the Supreme Court, the Commission issued notices in early 2024 to four TPPs that had consistently poor performance since the monitoring began. The Commission also expressed concerns to seven additional TPPs and all relevant authorities for immediate corrective actions. A committee was established to review representations from non-compliant TPPs (if any) for the period of FY 2024-25. The concerned TPPs have been directed to submit their written explanations within 15 days of receiving the Show Cause Notices. Failure to do so will result in further actions in accordance with the provisions of the Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjacent Areas Act, 2021, including actions under Section 14 of the Act.

Drone drops 12 kg heroin near Amritsar amid rise in cross-border smuggling

CHANDIGARH: A consignment of over 12 kg of heroin, dropped by a drone from Pakistan, was recovered near Daleke village in the Lopoke area of Amritsar, amid a rise in cross-border smuggling attempts during the winter fog season. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Punjab Police, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF), recovered approximately 12.050 kg of heroin from agricultural fields near Daleke village. Officials said smugglers were attempting to exploit thick fog conditions that severely reduce visibility along the 553-kilometre Indo-Pak international border in Punjab during winter. Director General of Police, Punjab, Gaurav Yadav said that during routine patrolling of identified vulnerable points, information was received about the presence of a drone in agricultural fields in the Daleke village area. Acting promptly on the input, joint teams from the ANTF, under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Gurpreet Singh, carried out a systematic search of the suspected location, he said, adding that a consignment of heroin was recovered from fields near Daleke village. The total weight of the recovered contraband, including packaging material, was found to be 12.050 kg, the DGP said. Sharing further details, Superintendent of Police, ANTF, Gurpreet Singh said preliminary investigation was underway to trace backward and forward linkages in the case using technical evidence and human intelligence. Suspects who were supposed to retrieve the consignment have been identified, and raids are being conducted to nab them, he said. A case, FIR No. 322 dated December 22, 2025, has been registered under Sections 21(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station ANTF. Sources said that since December 1 this year, the BSF has recovered around seven drones and 24 kg of heroin along the international border. With this, the total number of drone recoveries this year has risen to 279, while heroin seizures have reached approximately 400 kg. The small, low-flying drones, equipped with GPS-enabled drop mechanisms, are launched from Pakistan, often flying at night and returning within minutes. It is believed that many drones may have returned after successfully airdropping consignments of heroin, arms and ammunition. Sources said Pakistan-based drug syndicates and terror modules deliberately time their operations to coincide with periods of heavy fog, which usually last from late evening until well into the afternoon. The reduced visibility creates favourable conditions for cross-border infiltration and drone-based smuggling, hampering normal surveillance. Despite the challenging weather conditions, surveillance along the border has been significantly strengthened. Foot patrols have been enhanced, monitoring from observation towers has been intensified, and trained sniffer dogs have been deployed along the border fence and approach roads. These dogs, specially trained to detect narcotics and explosives, play a crucial role in identifying hidden consignments and tracking smugglers attempting to exploit foggy conditions. In many cases, drones have been intercepted and their payloads recovered before reaching their intended receivers, sources said.

Nearly 1,000 postgraduates, 3,324 graduates among 5,061 new Haryana police constables

CHANDIGARH: An increasing number of highly qualified candidates are joining the Haryana Police as constables. Of the 5,061 newly trained constables who will formally join the force on Wednesday after taking the oath of discipline, integrity and public service, 969 are postgraduates, 3,324 are graduates, and 768 hold 10+2 or diploma qualifications. This trend may be attributed to the dismal job scenario in both public and private sectors, the devaluation of educational degrees, or a growing passion for uniformed services. Director of the Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban, Karnal, A.S. Chawla said the batch is particularly noteworthy for its strong academic background and intellectual capacity. He added that many recruits are proficient in Hindi, English and Punjabi, which will enhance public communication, cybercrime handling, technology-driven policing and citizen-centric services. All recruits have been registered on the Karmayogi Portal and encouraged to undertake various capacity-building courses. Among the women trainees, Nishu from Jind secured the Overall First Position, Mohit from Gurugram stood second, while Manjeet Chahal from Hisar achieved third position and also won the Best Outdoor Trophy. These achievements reflect strong women empowerment and equal opportunity within the Haryana Police, Chawla said. A large number of recruits hail from rural backgrounds, along with significant participation from urban areas. Additionally, 32 recruits from other states have successfully completed training and earned the distinction of joining the Haryana Police. This diversity strengthens the force, making it more inclusive and representative, another official said. After the passing out parade on Wednesday, the 5,061 newly trained constables will be deployed across the state, playing a crucial role in strengthening law and order, peace and citizen security, the police said. The ceremony will be held in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The programme will also be attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, senior police and administrative officers, and other distinguished dignitaries.

Zuno SmartDrive Clocks Over 1 Crore kms, 1.5 Lac Trips as Young India Embraces Usage-Based Car Insurance

Zuno General Insurance , a new-age digital insurer committed to making insurance easy, friendly and transparent, today shared increasing early traction for Zuno SmartDrive, its app-led usage-based car insurance (UBI) launched in March 2025. In less than nine months, Zuno SmartDrive users have logged over 1 crore kms, signalling a clear shift towards behaviour-driven, personalised insurance among India’s new generation of drivers.   Zuno Smart Drive   To share the benefit of UBI with a larger audience, Zuno has launched its flagship initiative of Zuno Driving Quotient (ZDQ) Challenge to non Zuno users too. In this 5-day free trial, customers can simply download the Zuno app, complete a five-day driving assessment and receive a personalised driving score at no cost. This score unlocks additional discounts on car insurance and gift vouchers, making Zuno the first insurer in the country to offer a large-scale, app-based, pre-purchase driving test that delivers real, measurable financial benefits to customers.   The feature marks a major step in usage-based insurance adoption, as young India increasingly embraces behaviour-driven, personalised motor insurance.   Launched in March 2025, Zuno SmartDrive has already captured over 1.5 lac trips from digital-first drivers across the country, with an average score of 92%. Early participation has been dominated by users aged 28–40, signalling strong traction among India’s most mobile, tech-savvy consumers.   Zuno’s telematics driven model also shows that behaviour, not geography or type of car, is the most reliable predictor of risk. Across regions, two driving patterns consistently bring scores down are frequent hard braking and rapid acceleration. These behavioural markers have emerged as the strongest indicators of trip quality and future risk, regardless of where a driver lives or drives.   Among the most striking findings: Major metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata, showed an average driving score of 91%. This might be due to congestion, peak-hour density and erratic traffic flow. Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Tamil Nadu emerge as India’s safest driving states, with consistently low rates of harsh braking and rapid acceleration and each maintaining average driving scores above 92%. Speeding was more prevalent in Pune and Kolkata, while harsh braking was frequently observed in Guntur and Vizianagaram.   These findings reveal how real-world driving environments shape behaviour across regions.   Shanai Ghosh, MD & CEO, Zuno General Insurance said, “ With SmartDrive, we want to build a fair, transparent and personalised insurance experience that truly reflects how young India drives. The early numbers show that young India is driving safer, smarter and more mindfully, and they’re getting rewarded for it. Our focus is to keep building a simpler, more intuitive and rewarding ecosystem where good drivers finally receive the benefits they truly deserve, making roads in India safer .”   India’s road safety crisis shows little sign of easing. Provisional data for 2024 released by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) indicates that the country recorded over 4.7 lakh road accidents and more than 1.7 lakh fatalities during the year, underscoring the continued risk on Indian roads. Some states are yet to share the data post which the final data will be released by MoRTH. Despite incremental improvements in select states, unsafe driving behaviour, over speeding and low compliance with helmets and seat belts remain dominant contributors to fatal accidents.   The challenge is consistent with final MoRTH data for 2023, which reported 4.81 lakh road accidents, 1.73 lakh deaths and over 4.6 lakh injuries nationwide; that works out to roughly 20 deaths and 55 accidents every hour. Together, the data highlights an urgent need to shift focus from reactive protection to prevention-led, technology-driven road safety solutions.   At Zuno we have adopted this mission to encourage India to drive safer. Zuno’s Smart Drive App provides customers with real time feedback on their driving quality and nudges for safer driving behaviour.   Zuno’s telematics insights also highlight notable exposure trends: Drivers with top-tier scores between 96 and 100 show a striking 40% lower claims risk, underscoring how consistent, disciplined behaviour behind the wheel directly translates into fewer incidents. The data also dispels some common assumptions. Gender has almost no impact on driving safety. Women recorded an average score of 92.83%, only marginally higher than men at 92.81%, indicating that both groups demonstrate virtually the same risk profile on the road. When drivers take their trips matters as well. High-scoring behaviour (80–100) is most common during weekday , daytime driving, reinforcing the well-known risks associated with night-time travel. Structured, predictable daytime journeys tend to support steadier driving patterns and safer outcomes. Across regions and vehicle types, two behaviours emerge as the strongest predictors of lower scores and higher risk: Frequent harsh braking, and High, rapid acceleration. Regardless of where a person drives, these two actions consistently signal a risky trip. Seasonal behaviour also tells an important story. Even with changing conditions, rain does not turn safe drivers into risky ones. Those with high scores (80–100) maintain similarly strong performance across both summer and monsoon seasons, showing that core driving habits remain stable despite weather shifts.   Zuno SmartDrive car insurance also includes India’s first real-time crash detection feature. It uses advanced mobile telematics to automatically sense an accident and trigger an alert to Zuno’s support team. Once triggered, the team coordinates emergency support, roadside assistance and priority claims handling, ensuring that help reaches the customer without requiring them to make a call.   About Zuno General Insurance Zuno General Insurance, formerly known as Edelweiss General Insurance, is a new-age digital insurer with an aspiration to reimagine Insurance to make it easy, friendly, and transparent.
