Airlines asked to resume normal operations at 32 shut airports from May 15
NEW DELHI: Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Tuesday night expressed optimism that airlines would resume their normal operations to the 32 closed airports from May 15. He released a statement to this effect after holding a review meeting with top officials and representatives of all airlines in New Delhi. The Minister said, With the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) ending on 15th May, I suggested that airlines resume their normal schedules from the 15th across all 32 airports for which the NOTAM was issued. All airlines responded positively to this suggestion. A Ministry source said, At present, partial operations are taking place. The full-fledged operations will resume from May 15. This was the outcome after the meeting held on Tuesday. The NOTAM to close 32 airports in the North and Western India upto May 15 (5.29 am) was issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on May 9 as a precautionary step after the launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7 . A revised NOTAM by AAI said the airports would open for commercial operations from Monday (May 12) but leading airlines like Indigo and Air India had publicly stated they would not operate flights to specific airports on Monday and Tuesday (May 13). This was on account of unconfirmed reports of drone attacks by Pakistan at a few cities. Indigo operated a flight from Delhi to Amritsar but it had to turn back due to a sudden blackout imposed in Amritsar. Opposition parties slam AAP government in Punjab after 21 died in Amritsar hooch tragedy
CHANDIGARH: The Yudh Nashian Virudh (War Against Drugs) campaign by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government has come under fire from opposition parties after 21 people died in a hooch tragedy Tuesday (May 13). Calling the campaign mere political theatre, the opposition has demanded a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. While holding CM Mann directly responsible for the tragic incident, Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa said, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has publicly stated that such a tragedy could not have occurred without political, bureaucratic, or police support. I agree with him. If the liquor mafia is flourishing under his nose, he is either complicit or incompetent. This is not the first incident in the three-year regime of the AAP. In March last year, eight people died after consuming illicit liquor in the Dirba assembly segment of Sangrur district. Notably, the Dirba assembly segment is being represented by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and Sangrur is a home district of CM Bhagwant Mann, he further stated. Bajwa stated that drug overdose deaths among Punjabi youth have become the new normal, and the recent incident has exposed the AAP government's insincerity in its promise to make Punjab drug-free. DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav has set a May 31 deadline for eradicating the drug menace from the state. Earlier, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal had also set deadlines in vain. Would the AAP government bother to let the Punjabis know what happened to those deadlines? Bajwa asked. The Excise Minister Harpal Cheema must resign immediately. Anything less would be an insult to the lives lost, he voiced. He demanded a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring urged the government to provide adequate compensation to the dependents, and at the same time he demanded fixing responsibility over the deaths, which, he remarked, were like cold-blooded murders of unsuspecting people. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring urged the government to provide adequate compensation to the victims' families and demanded accountability, calling the deaths cold-blooded murders of unsuspecting people. He questioned the governments claims of eradicating drugs in Punjab by May 31. Not that we believed you could do that, but at least we did not expect that besides the drug over dose, people would also die from spurious liquor produced under the nose of your government, he stated. Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar alleged that individuals jailed for liquor scams are now running the state from government residences in Chandigarh, questioning what good can be expected from such people. He announced that the BJP will meet Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to demand a probe into how those without any constitutional role are conducting official meetings in Punjab. He alleged that the same people who crafted Delhis liquor policy influenced Punjabs policy, leading to the current situation. Jakhar emphasised that this issue warrants an impartial probe. Expressing grief over the Majitha incident, he called Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann a mere puppet and held AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia responsible. He claimed that after being ousted by Delhis electorate, they have shifted their focus to Punjab. Jakhar further alleged that the liquor mafia, previously active in Delhi, is now thriving in Punjab, exploiting the poor. He accused liquor traders of receiving political patronage, which is why such tragic incidents continue to occur. He pointed out that the government failed to learn from the earlier Sangrur liquor tragedy, leading to the loss of more innocent lives. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu slammed chief minister Bhagwant Mann over the hooch tragedy. Taking to X, Bittu alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party governments Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh (anti-drug) campaign was just a political theatre. Families are shattered by spurious liquor, while the @BhagwantMann government remains in deep slumber. Their so-called Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh is nothing but political theatre. When the chief minister himself has a history with alcohol, how can the fight against addiction ever be sincere? the post read. Former ministers Surjit Singh Rakhra and Parminder Singh Dhindsa have described the deaths resulting from the liquor incident in the Majitha constituency as an official murder. Dhindsa stated that the ongoing war against drugs is merely a facade. The people of Punjab have decided to initiate a movement against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and seek to remove the AAP government in Punjab, similar to what has happened in Delhi. Both leaders called for a time-bound magisterial inquiry by the government. Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majitha accused the government of shielding the prime accused and claimed that officials from the excise department were complicit in the racket. He demanded compensation of Rs 25 lakh for each victim, criticising the government's failure to crack down on bootleggers and illicit liquor smugglers.

'IAF has made India proud': PM Modi hails Operation Sindoor at Adampur AFS
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lauded the Indian armed forces for their efforts and valour in executing Operation Sindoor. Addressing a gathering of the Indian Air Force personnel and soldiers stationed at the Adampur Air Force Station in Punjab, PM Modi hailed the military force for reaching their target with perfection. I can proudly say that all of you reached your target with perfection. In Pakistan, it was not just the terrorist camps and their air bases that were destroyed, but their nefarious designs and audacity were also defeated, PM Modi said. Saluting the armed forces for their efforts and valour, Modi said, All of you have made millions of Indians proud, have made every Indian's mother proud, you have created history, and I have come among you this morning to see you. When our drones destroy the walls of the enemy's fort, when our missiles reach the target with a whizzing sound, the enemy hears 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. When we light up the sun even at night, the enemy sees 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. When our armies blow away the threat of nuclear blackmail, then only one thing resonates from the sky- 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', he added. PM Modi said every moment of Operation Sindoor was a testament to Indian army's capability and lauded the forces' coordination as genuinely fantastic. Be it Army, Navy or Air Force - their coordination was amazing. Navy showed its dominance over the sea, Army strengthened the border and the Indian Air Force attacked as well as defended. BSF and other Forces displayed fantastic capabilities. Integrated air and land combat system did amazing job. This is jointness. This has become a strong identity of the capability of Indian armed forces, he said. Speaking of the Pakistan military's attempts to target Indian military bases, PM Modi said, Rattled with #OperationSindoor, the enemy tried to attack this air base and several of our other air bases multiple times. They targeted us again and again but the nefarious designs of Pakistan failed each time. Reieterating the success of Operation Sindoor, PM Modi said that the Indian military has defeated the Pakistan Army, on which the terrorists has been relying. The Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy have defeated the Pakistani Army on which these terrorists were relying. There is no such place in Pakistan where terrorists can sit and breathe in peace, he said. PM Modi's visit to the airbase came just a day after his national address regarding Operation Sindoor , where he stressed that the only talks that will happen with the neighbouring country will be on Kashmir and terrorism.

Tech-savvy Telangana lags in birth, death digitisation
HYDERABAD: Despite being considered one of the top tech hubs in the country, Telangana has lagged behind in issuing digital birth certificates. According to the Civil Registration System (CRS) 2021 report, out of a total of 6,11,651 registered births, 2,34,425 deaths, and 6,051 stillbirths in the state, only 4,15,485 birth records, 1,26,098 death records and 4,062 stillbirth records had been digitised. The lack of digital birth certificates creates difficulties for citizens in accessing various services. The report also noted that birth and death registrations often did not occur within the stipulated 21-day period. Telangana, Bihar, Tripura, Goa, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh fall into the category of registering more than 50% but less than 80% of births and deaths within the 21-day time frame, the report stated. This shortfall persists despite directions issued to all District Medical and Health Officers (District Registrars) and Municipal Commissioners/Municipal Health Officers (Urban Registrars), who are authorised to prosecute and compound offences. These officials were again instructed to exercise their powers under Section 23 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, to improve registration compliance. However, the CRS report pointed out that Telangana did not impose any penalties under Section 23 of the Act and submitted a nil report to the Centre. The report further stated that several states, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, did not furnish complete information regarding birth and death certificates issued under Sections 12 and 17 of the Act. According to the CRS, Telangana cited Covid-19 as one of the major causes of under-reporting, along with a lack of sub-registrars and statistical staff in municipalities, and a high number of vacancies among panchayat secretaries. The number of registered births in Telangana also declined in 2021 compared to 2020. Nationally, the number of registered births decreased slightly from 242.2 lakhs in 2020 to 242.0 lakhs in 2021 a decline of about 0.1%. Most states and union territories saw a decrease in registered births in 2021, with the exception of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Puducherry. The report noted that 12 states and UTs Jharkhand, Karnataka, Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu contributed significantly to the overall decline in registered births in 2021 compared to 2020.

Varsities in border states agree to hold online classes for Telangana students
HYDERABAD: A total of 162 students, including 56 from various institutions in Jammu and Kashmir and 106 from Punjab, reached Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi. Of these, 130 individuals were sent to their hometowns in Telangana, while the remaining were accommodated at the Telangana Bhavan and are expected to travel to their native places on Tuesday. According to officials, the state government is providing relief and support to citizens and students returning from border areas through Telangana Bhavan. On Monday, Resident Commissioner Dr Gaurav Uppal reviewed the arrangements and interacted with the students. During the interaction, many students shared that their institutions were requesting them to return to campus, as the situation in the border areas was gradually improving. However, the majority expressed a desire to visit their homes first and return to their institutions once conditions fully stabilize. Responding to their concerns, Uppal immediately contacted the authorities of the respective universities and urged them to facilitate online classes for the time being. The institutions responded positively and agreed to provide the necessary support. Some final-year students conveyed their intention to wait a few more days before making a decision, to which Uppal assured them of full cooperation from the Telangana government. He also encouraged them to stay at Telangana Bhavan as long as needed. Officials noted that with conditions steadily improving, the number of distress calls has significantly decreased since Sunday evening, and only a few more arrivals are anticipated. Uppal emphasized that Telangana Bhavan remains fully prepared to support anyone seeking assistance and assured that all necessary help would continue until every returning citizen is safely reunited with their family.

Cricket Australia Asks Players To Decide On Return To India As IPL 2025 Is Set To Resume
Indian Premier League: With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 set to restart on May 17 and continue till June 3, just a week before the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Lord's in London, Cricket Australia have left it to the individual players to take a call on whether to return to India to rejoin the world's richest league. It will give its inputs after consultation with the Australian federal government and security agencies, but the players will have to decide on whether they would like to join IPL 2025, which was suspended for a week on May 9 because of fighting between India and Pakistan as India retaliated for the terror attack on innocent tourists by Pakistan-supported terrorists at Pahalgam, which resulted in the death of 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen. Cricket Australia will support players in their individual decisions whether to return to India or not, CA said in a statement on Tuesday. We are maintaining communication with the Australian Government and BCCI around security arrangements and safety, www.cricket.com.au quoted Cricket Australia as saying in its statement. The other matter of concern for Cricket Australia is the fact that the IPL 2025 stretched into June, and some of its key players may get tied up till June 3 if their respective teams reach the final. Besides players, coaches, support staff members and former players are also involved in the IPL. Among the top players involved who could also be picked in the WTC final squad are pacer Josh Hazlewood, who plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who are currently placed second in the points table and in a good position to qualify for the playoffs. Skipper Pat Cummins' Sunrisers Hyderabad are out of contention for the playoff spots but have three more matches to play. This means he will have to be in India till after May 25, when they play their last match in Delhi against Kolkata Knight Riders. Mitchell Starc's Delhi Capitals also have three matches to play, and they too are in strong contention to qualify for the playoffs. If they go all the way, Starc will have to be with the team till June 4 and then directly go to London. The other possible Australian WTC players in IPL teams are Travis Head (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Josh Inglis (Punjab Kings) and Mitchell Marsh (Lucknow Super Giants). Though Travis Head's SRH are out of contention, Marsh's LSG still have a chance, as does Inglis' Punjab Kings. In its statement on Tuesday, Cricket Australia has made it clear that the team management will work with the players if they decide to join the IPL bandwagon. Team management will work through the preparation implications for the World Test Championship final for those players who choose to play in the remaining IPL matches, Cricket Australia said. Besides the above-mentioned players who are in contention for WTC final spots, there are other current and former players involved in various roles in the IPL 2025. Ricky Ponting is the coach of Punjab Kings and has compatriots Brad Haddin as his assistant, Justin Langer is the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants while Mike Hussey is the batting coach of Chennai Super Giants. Among other players, Nathan Ellis is with CSK, Spencer Johnson is playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, while Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett are representing Punjab Kings. Besides Hazlewood, Tim David is also with RCB, while Delhi Capitals also have Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Adam Zampa is with SRH. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the resumption of the IPL 2025, which was suspended on May 9, after a ceasefire was agreed upon with Pakistan. India had launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, targeting terrorist and military installations in Pakistan while Pakistan attacked Jammu, Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. Besides Hazlewood, Tim David is also with RCB, while Delhi Capitals also have Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Adam Zampa is with SRH. Also Read: LIVE Cricket Score Article Source: IANS

Students anxious as universities in border states remain silent on classes
KOZHIKODE: Students from universities in Indias border states are growing increasingly anxious as their sanctioned official leave period came to an end on Monday. In the wake of tensions along the India-Pakistan border, many students -- including a significant number from Kerala -- had returned to their home states. However, universities are yet to issue any notification regarding the reopening of the campuses or the extension of leave. At the Central University of Punjab (CUP), students allege that the authorities initially refused to grant leave despite reports of Pakistani drones being spotted above the campus. Leave was reportedly sanctioned only after the intervention of elected representatives, and even then, it was limited to May 12. The university has said that classes will continue in online mode till Friday, Basil Saman, a CUP student, told TNIE . However, the news we hear from Punjab is worrying as more drones were spotted in Amritsar. We are not ready to go back until there is complete peace there. With final semester exams and project presentations pending, students are in a dilemma. A similar situation prevails at other universities in the region, leaving students uncertain about their academic future. A student from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Jammu said that while the university announced classes would resume on Tuesday, student protests forced the administration to shift to online mode. Its impossible for us to return to the campus right now. Im still on a train to Kerala. Our parents are equally afraid given the tense situation near the border. We demand the authorities continue online classes until the situation in the valley is completely peaceful, said Fathima Neha, a student at SKUAST. Students have also alleged that universities in Punjab and Kashmir failed to implement adequate safety measures during episodes of heavy shelling and drone incursions. Punjab is one of the border states directly affected by the India-Pakistan conflict. Bathinda, where CUP is located, lies just 200km from the border. Since the conflict began, there was no advisory or communication from the university administration or local authorities regarding safety protocols, said Shilpa, an SFI activist and PhD scholar at CUP. Shilpa added that it was only after the situation worsened that the university issued a notice containing basic safety guidelines, followed by an announcement suspending classes until May 12, prompting students to leave for their homes. Thiruvananthapuram mans startup emerges as a credible eye in sky amid Operation Sindoor
KOCHI: As Operation Sindoor unfolded with strategic precision across Indias western front, a lesser-known yet critical player emerged from the digital shadows. Kawa Space, an Indian spacetech startup founded by Thiruvananthapuram native Kris Nair, emerged as one of the most credible sources of satellite-based intelligence during the campaign. While misinformation spread rapidly on social media, many turned to maps and images released by Kawa Space and its enigmatic founder. Their X (formerly Twitter) handles consistently shared high-resolution satellite imagery showing the extent of damage inflicted on Pakistani targets. Crucially, these images have not only added credibility to Indias claims but also served as visual proof of the impact of its operations. The images, shared with credible defence-related websites including Alpha Defence an independent firm known for its high-quality commentary on defence, aerospace and geopolitics have become an essential tool in decoding the progress of Operation Sindoor. On Sunday evening, Nair hinted at a significant development: The next image analysis report is one hell of a banger. The following day, he posted a cryptic line: O Black Mountains, what are you hiding in your shadowed heart? accompanied by a wide-angle satellite image believed to show the Kirana Hills, a remote and rocky region in Pakistans Punjab province long rumoured to house nuclear infrastructure. While it remains unclear whether the location was targeted, the post sparked intense speculation and drew attention to the growing role of Indias private space sector. Founded in March 2019, Kawa Space was envisioned as a critical application and infrastructure layer for the global space industry. Originally built to serve the broader geospatial tech ecosystem, it has now repositioned itself as a global intelligence and defence space company. We dont do civilian industry stuff anymore, Nair stated bluntly a clear signal of the companys pivot towards high-stakes, security-focused operations. Startups evidence-backed assessments gained trust Our mission is to harness the power of satellites orbiting our planet and help people reap their benefits to improve life on earth, he says. Yet, beneath the commercial ambition lies a intense nationalistic drive. Among our team are those who have worked on every front of sovereignty and national security, Kawa Space says on its website. Theyve flown jet fighters deep into enemy territory, commanded warships, and fought wars youve heard of and the ones you havent. In the face of rampant misinformation, Kawa Spaces methodical, evidence-backed assessments have gained the trust of defence watchers, journalists, and policy insiders alike. In war, truth is often the first casualty. But as Operation Sindoor reshapes regional dynamics, a small satellite startup is making sure the truth or at least a clearer picture of it can still be seen, from up above.
