Punjab: Tarn Taran SSP suspended days before November 11 by-poll
CHANDIGARH: The Election Commission on Saturday issued directions for the suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal, three days ahead of the November 11 assembly by-election. Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has been given the additional charge of SSP, Tarn Taran, with immediate effect. No reason was mentioned for Grewals suspension. She had been posted as the Tarn Taran SSP in September. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had recently lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab against Grewal, accusing her of using the police force to file false and baseless FIRs against SAD leadership and cadre to prevent them from campaigning in the by-election. Party chief spokesman and legal cell head Arshdeep Singh Kler alleged that the police were acting under pressure from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and registering politically motivated FIRs to obstruct the partys campaign. Kler stated that notices under Sections 126 and 169 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were issued to SAD leaders to stop them from canvassing. He also cited FIRs against Dodhe village sarpanch Varinder Singh and Manpreet Singh, the personal assistant of SAD candidate Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa. Last month, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had lodged a complaint with the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer against SSP Grewal, accusing her of using the police to file false FIRs against the partys leadership and cadre to prevent them from campaigning for the Tarn Taran bypoll. The SAD also held a dharna against the SSP for allegedly acting against its party workers and leaders. Polling for the Tarn Taran bypoll will be held on November 11, with results scheduled to be announced on November 14. The Tarn Taran assembly seat fell vacant following the death of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police has arrested two men allegedly associated with terrorist organisation Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) who were involved in the brutal murder of Italy-based Malkit Singh at Raja Sansi in Amritsar. Sophisticated weapons were recovered from the possession of the men who were planning to carry out sensational crimes in the state, said Director General of Police, Punjab, Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday. Yadav said that the arrested men have been identified as Bikramjit Singh alias Bikram, a resident of Dhariwal village in Amritsar, and Karanbir Singh, a resident of village Saisra Kalan in Amritsar. The recovered weapons include one foreign-made .30 caliber PX5 pistol, one .30 caliber pistol, one foreign-made .45 caliber pistol, one .32 caliber pistol and one revolver along with 20 live cartridges from their possession. Due to severe injuries, Malkit Singh succumbed to his wounds in the hospital. Yadav said that Bikramjit is associated with the terrorist organization KLF and has a criminal history with cases registered under the Explosives Act, Attempt to Murder, and Arms Act. He was also involved in the 2018 grenade attack on a religious place at Raja Sansi, he said. He said preliminary investigations revealed that, on the directions of his foreign handlers, Bikramjit had procured illegal weapons from across the border. Sharing operational details, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Sandeep Goel said that acting on reliable inputs, police teams from Amritsar Rural under the overall supervision of SSP Maninder Singh arrested Bikramjit near Gurdwara Sahib at village Dhariwal. On the disclosure of Bikram, Karanbir was arrested from Adda near Kukranwala, he said. The police teams were led by DSP Gurinder Nagra. Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Maninder Singh said that further investigations are underway to establish forward and backward linkages in this case to expose the full nexus. More arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days, he added. In this regard, a case FIR no. 177 dated November 2 had been registered under sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act at Police Station Raja Sansi in Amritsar Rural.

Canada deports three foreign nationals linked to extortion targeting Punjabi business owners
CHANDIGARH: The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has deported three foreign nationals following an investigation linking them to ongoing extortion threats, shootings, and violence targeting Indian-origin Punjabi businesses in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The action was part of the newly formed BC Extortion Task Force. The agency has also initiated immigration investigations into 78 foreign nationals who may be inadmissible to the country. The deportations, announced on November 7, are the first carried out under the 40-member BC Extortion Task Force, established earlier this year to coordinate intelligence and enforcement efforts against transnational organised crime groups operating in the province. The operation involves the CBSA, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Abbotsford Police Department, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit B.C. (CFSEU-BC), Delta Police Department, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, Surrey Police Service, and Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit. The task force receives support from the federal RCMP National Coordination and Support Team (NCST), which facilitates coordination and information sharing on extortion cases with law enforcement agencies in affected provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. In a statement, the CBSA said its role in the task force is to assist in the execution of search warrants, conduct investigations under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), and share information with law enforcement partners. To date, the CBSA has initiated immigration investigations into 78 foreign nationals who may be inadmissible and has removed from Canada three individuals related to these investigations, the statement read. These investigations and enforcement actions highlight the critical role our intelligence and inland enforcement teams play in disrupting organized transnational criminal groups. We will pursue the swift removal of individuals who have abused our immigration system and who compromise the safety of our communities, said Nina Patel, Regional Director General, Pacific Region, CBSA. According to the Surrey Police Service, 65 extortion cases have been reported in Surrey so far this year, 35 of which involved gunfire. Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree said, I have seen up close just how diligently border services officers and investigators work to ensure the safety and security of our communities and the integrity of Canadas immigration system. I thank them for their dedication and vigilance in helping to protect our borders and for the active role they are playing in the extortion task force. The CBSA is an essential part of the BC Extortion Task Force, working with the RCMP, CFSEU, local police, and all levels of government to disrupt criminal networks. With our federal partners, we are ensuring that law enforcement has the tools they need to find these criminals and bring them to justice. Those who commit violent extortion that terrorizes our communities will be arrested, charged, and, as weve seen today, if they are not Canadian citizens, they may be removed from Canada. I thank CBSA officers for their vigilance and their active role in protecting British Columbians, said Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. Interestingly, last year the CBSA opened 184 criminal investigations into suspected offences under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The agency is responsible for identifying, investigating, and prosecuting individuals and entities connected to organised crime, human smuggling, immigration fraud, terrorism, and other violations of the Customs Act and the IRPA. Officials added that the removals represent a significant step in ongoing efforts to dismantle organized networks behind the recent surge of violence and intimidation targeting members of the Punjabi business community in British Columbia.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Government has suspended Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Moga district, Charumita Shekhar, a 2014-batch Punjab Civil Service (PCS) officer, for her role in a controversial land acquisition. The suspension follows serious allegations of irregularities in a land acquisition case worth over Rs 3 crore linked to the National Highway-703 project in the district. Punjab Chief Secretary KAP Sinha ordered Charumitas suspension on Thursday evening after taking cognizance of the Punjab and Haryana High Courts stern observations regarding contradictory reports in the land acquisition for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project. According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel (PCS Branch), the officer has been placed under suspension under Rule 4(1)(a) of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970. During her suspension, Charumitas headquarters will remain in Chandigarh, and she will receive a subsistence allowance as per service rules. Shekhar, who also served as the municipal commissioner, had been charge-sheeted for allegedly consenting to the land acquisition award worth Rs 3 crore in Moga district. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in land demarcation and compensation under the NHAI project. The Financial Commissioner (Revenue) had earlier ordered a fresh demarcation to be carried out in the presence of nominees from the Chief Director of Punjab Vigilance Bureau, PWD Secretary, and NHAI, under the supervision of Ferozepur Deputy Commissioner Deepshikha Sharma. Their report differed from earlier reports. The land in question was originally acquired in 1963 by the PWD (B&R), Ferozepur, for road construction and had remained in continuous public use for more than five decades. In his observations dated September 17, Ravi Bhagat, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Secretary, PWD, noted multiple contradictory demarcation reports issued between 2021 and 2025, as well as the recording of a partition mutation in July 2021, even though the land had been under government use since 1963. He highlighted that an inflated consent award of Rs 3.62 crore had been issued for just three kanals of land, far exceeding the prevailing market value. Following these findings, Financial Commissioner (Revenue) Anurag Verma charge-sheeted Dharamkot Tehsildar Maninder Singh and Naib Tehsildar Gurdeep Singh for lapses in land demarcation and record verification. CM's technical advisor quits In a related development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Manns technical advisor, Ravi Chawla, has resigned over alleged delays in clearing files related to development works. Chawla, who was appointed in June last year after retiring as Chief Engineer, was responsible for clearing technical estimates of works in various departments. Complaints had been received that files were pending with him for extended periods, delaying the execution of development works. It is learned that officials from different departments have now been instructed to clear estimates independently, as deadlines for various projects were not being met.

How Sikhs built a home in Thiruvananthapuram
As dawn broke on Guru Nanak Jayanti on Wednesday, the chanting of hymns filled the morning air. Men, women, and children sat together on the floor, heads covered, listening to the verses from the Guru Granth Sahib being recited. The reading was followed by the Sahaj Path Bhog, marking the completion of the scripture recitation, and Shabad Kirtan, where devotees sang hymns of devotion and gratitude. The ceremony ended with langar the community meal where everyone, regardless of background, sit in a single line to share food, conversation, and more. For Sikhs, its a day to remember their founders teachings of equality, humility, and compassion. This year, as Guru Nanak Jayanti lit up celebrations across the country, Thiruvananthapuram too celebrated the occasion and also the bond that has journeyed across centuries and miles. Over centuries, Thiruvananthapuram has drawn people from far and wide traders, scholars, workers, and travellers who found reasons to stay. With every community that settled here, the city grew a little wider in heart and habit. The Sikhs were among those who stayed and made Thiruvananthapuram home. They grew into a close-knit community, bringing their traditions to the Kerala capital while embracing the culture around them. I have been here for 28 years. There are many who came to this city and stayed for decades. We understand Malayalam, and our children speak it fluently. I even married a Malayali woman from Pathanamthitta, says Parvinder Singh, a former Army captain, with a smile. A scene from the gurdwara Thiruvanathapuram is now home to around 20 Sikh families, along with many others who live here temporarily through the civil services, defence, ISRO, CRPF, Technopark and other central government postings. The city currently has a gurdwara inside the Army Cantonment at Pangode. Another one is under construction at Shastri Nagar at Karamana. Before speaking of the community, its important to return to its beginnings, to Guru Nanak himself. According to historian M G Sasibhooshan, it is believed that Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus, travelled through southern India in the early 16th century as part of his spiritual journey. It is said that he came to the city from Thiruvattar and went to Varkala, says Sasibhooshan. This journey is mentioned in a footnote in the biography of Guru Nanak written by Guru Gopal Singh. We cannot be completely certain, but one thing seems clear he likely visited Thiruvattar or Thiruvananthapuram. He adds that a clue lies in Guru Nanaks Japji Sahib, one of his earliest works. In it, he mentions visiting a temple by the seaside and being moved to see the sun and moon worshipping the idol. That description perfectly matches the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, he explains. Devotees partaking of langar arranged at the gurdwara in Pangode Army Cantonment Sasibhooshan also notes possible historical links between Sikhs and Travancores military. In the Travancore Brigade, some soldiers carried the surname Singh. They might not all have been Sikhs, but its quite possible that Sikh soldiers were part of the force. Also, the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, already a renowned pilgrimage centre by then and open to Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs, drew many northern pilgrims as early as the 15th and 16th centuries, he says. While the exact period of their arrival remains uncertain, traces of the community in the 20th century are clearer. Around that time, cycles became popular here. A company from Punjab opened a bicycle shop at Pazhavangadi, owned by a Punjabi Hindu, and one of his employees was a Sikh. There was also an ayurvedic store near East Fort run by Bengalis, but again, with a Sikh staffer. So their presence goes back quite far, says Sasibhooshan. When the Pangode military camp was set up, the first gurdwara in the city was also set up. Wherever an army camp existed, they built four places of worship a temple, a church, a mosque, and a gurdwara. That is how it began here just one room at first, recalls Parvinder Singh, a former military captain. Over time, we added more space, and now we are planning to expand it again. Also, in Sikhism, there is a tradition that the first child, almost always the son, serves in the army, he adds. The communitys spirit of inclusion has always been strong. A gurdwara is an open space, welcoming everyone. Its not about high or low status, or belonging to one faith, says Ujesh Kumar, who works in the liquor industry. Im not Sikh by birth, but I grew up in Punjab and feel really connected to the community, which is why I come here. Preparing langar at the gurdwara in Pangode Army Cantonment The gurdwara is more than a place of worship for many. For them, it gives a sense of belonging in a new city. Whenever people move for work, the first thing they look for is a gurdwara. Its where you feel safe and meet people, says Ujesh. When I came here in 1989, everything was different the language, the food but we found our people, and that is how the community grew. Because the Pangode gurdwara is inside the Army Cantonment, civilian visitors face entry restrictions. After Covid, security protocols became stricter, and it became difficult for us to access the gurdwara inside the Cantonment, says Amarjith Singh, Kerala State Advisory Leader of Sikhs in the National Commission for Minorities. Thanks to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who took the initiative to allot land, we will soon have the capitals first civilian gurudwara the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara. Though still under construction, the community travelled to the gurdwara in Thevara, Kochi, to celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti this time. But they now look forward to the completion of the new gurdwara at Karamana, which they believe will open a new chapter for the Sikh community in the capital. A scene from the gurdwara

Centre withdraws notice dissolving Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University
CHANDIGARH: Following political backlash, the Centre withdrew the earlier notification dissolving 143-year-old Panjab University's senate and syndicate, and replacing them with nominated bodies. The Centre also put a hold on the immediate overhaul of the university, hours after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann vowed to challenge the move in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. A fresh notification issued by the Union Ministry of Education reads, In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1), read with sub-sections (2) and (3) of section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, the Central Government hereby rescinds the notification dated October 28, 2025. The Punjab University Act, 1947 (East Punjab Act 7 of 1947) shall have effect from the date, as appointed by the Central Government, subject to the following modifications, the new notification stated. The Centres clarification is being seen as a tactical pause amid the escalating tensions over what critics have called an unconstitutional and anti-federal move, while supporters maintain the reforms are vital to free the university from political interference. The development comes in the wake of intense protests by students, farmer unions and opposition parties against the Centre's earlier decision to dissolve the Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University, and replace them with nominated bodies. The October 28 notification suggested amendment of the Panjab University Act, 1947, reducing the strength of universitys top governing body from 91 members to 24, abolishing the graduates constituency completely, and replacing its elected Syndicate with a largely nominated structure. With the withdrawal of the October 28 notification, the Senate and Syndicate will continue to function under their existing framework as defined by the Panjab University Act, 1947. Mann had termed this move unconstitutional, asserting that the Union govenrment had overstepped its powers. The Punjab government will approach the high court against the issuance of a notification unconstitutionally dissolving the Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University, Chandigarh. A panel of the countrys eminent and specialist lawyers will be formed to tenaciously fight against this act of high-handedness, he posted on X. He had also argued that the Centre had no authority to amend the Panjab University Act through a notification. Either the Assembly can amend it, or the matter has to be taken to Parliament. But none of that happened. By issuing the notification, the BJP has revealed its anti-Punjab face, the matter would be raised in the Assembly to strengthen Punjabs position legislatively, he said. Established in 1882 at Lahore, Panjab University is one of the oldest universities in the country. After partition, a new campus of the university was built in India. Again, when Punjab was split into Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the university became an inter-state body corporate under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, passed by Parliament. Despite the fact that the university is controlled by the Union government, the Punjab government continues to hold a major stake. As an inter-state body corporate, PU does not have the status of a full-fledged central university. While visiting the university in 2015, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) underlined the need to revisit the governance structure especially in terms of appointments of faculty deans, it was pointed out. A 2021 committee set up by then Vice President and Chancellor Venkaiah Naidu under Prof R P Tiwari had also recommended heavily paring down of the PU Senate and Syndicate.

Zohran Mamdani and fellow Indian Americans make history in US local races
Zohran Mamdani s campaign, powered by catchy music and viral videos, and his subsequent victory are well known. But two other Indian Americans also made significant gains in elections across New York, Virginia, and New Jersey on Tuesday. Adding intrigue, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval defeated US Vice President JD Vances half-brother, Cory Bowman, in his re-election bid. It takes immense courage to run for office, and these leaders have stepped up to represent their communities and build a better future for this country, said Indian American Impact, an advocacy organization that works to empower South Asian and Indian American communities through civic engagement and partnership. Zohran Kwame Mamdani emerged victorious in New York Citys mayoral race, becoming the first Muslim, first Indian-origin, and first African-born mayor of New York. Three candidates of Indian descent played prominent roles in Democratic wins, at a time marked by heightened anti-Indian sentiment and H-1B visa concerns. Mamdani, the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan born author of Indian ancestry, upset former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and was declared the winner in June this year. His rise marked the success of a candidate previously unknown to many. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, moved to South Africa and then New York City at age seven, and became an American citizen in 2018. Earlier this year, he married Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, and he will take office on January 1. Ghazala Hashmi won the Virginia Lieutenant Governor post, adding to her distinction as the first Muslim and first South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate. Hashmis Senate seat will now be filled through a special election. She first entered politics in 2019, flipping a Republican-held state Senate seat, and in 2024 became chair of the Senate Education and Health Committee, overseeing priorities like reproductive freedom and public education. Hashmi, born in 1964 in Hyderabad, India, with ancestral roots in Karachi, moved to the US at age four, was raised in Georgia, and holds a BA from Georgia Southern University and a PhD from Emory University. Indian-origin Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval secured a second term, defeating Republican Cory Bowman. Pureval, 43, first made history in 2021 as Cincinnatis first Asian American mayor. Although officially a non-partisan office, he is broadly aligned with the Democratic Party. His mother, a Tibetan refugee, escaped Chinese occupation and grew up in southern India, while his father is Punjabi. Pureval entered politics in 2015 with a bid for Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, gradually building a political career. Pureval, born to migrant parents in Ohio, won his first student election in class 8 under the slogan Big, Brown and Beautiful. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, worked in Washington, DC, returned to Ohio as a special assistant US attorney, and later joined Procter & Gamble as legal counsel before formally launching his political career. Other Indian-American candidates also ran for local offices. In Morrisville, North Carolina, Satish Garimella lost to incumbent TJ Cawley, while in Hoboken, New Jersey, Dini Ajmani ran for mayor but no winner has been declared. Indian-American and South Asian candidates also contested city council seats across New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Washington, Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Former US President Barack Obama congratulated the Democratic winners on X, saying, Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. Its a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. Weve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.
As we commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on Gurpurab 2025, let's revisit Amitabh Bachchan's cultural heritage when he himself shared that he is half-Sikh, with his maternal roots tracing back to a Sikh family from Punjab.
Punjab MP Amarinder Warring booked over casteist remarks against late leader Buta Singh
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president and Member of Parliament from Ludhiana Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has been booked over 'casteist remarks' against veteran leader late Buta Singh made during a campaign for the Tarn Taran bypoll. A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Kapurthala under Sections 353 (Statements causing public mischief), 196 (Promoting enmity between groups on ground of religion, race, others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Amendment 2015). Sarabjot Singh Sidhu, son of late leader and former minister Joginder Singh Mann and nephew of Buta Singh, filed a complaint with Senior Superintendent of Police of Kapurthala Gaurav Toora. The complaint stated that the remarks have the potential to incite caste-based tensions and disrupt communal harmony in the state as they dishonour the legacy of a national leader. The statement made by Warring is not only factually incorrect and racially charged, but it also constitutes a direct insult to the dignity and legacy of Buta Singh, a revered leader of the Scheduled Caste community and former home minister of India, who belonged to the Mazhabi Sikh community, it further read. Sidhu asserted that the words amounted to body shaming, caste humiliation and promotion of hatred, claiming that the intent behind the statement was disrespect a marginalised community. The complaint stated that the accused allegedly remarked that Buta Singh was made Union Home Minister only because he was a black Mazhabi Sikh who worked in buffalo fodder feeding activities. Confirming that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, Kapurthala SI Toora said, On the basis of the complaint submitted on November 3, we have sought opinion from our legal team, which recommended in writing to register an FIR against the accused as mentioned in the complaint. A detailed action will be carried according to the course of law before taking further action. Sources said that the case has been handed over for investigation and further inquiry is underway to verify the allegations and collect evidence, including video recordings, witness statements, and media reports related to the alleged speech. The investigation will examine whether the statement was made in the reported manner, the context of the speech, and whether the legal provisions invoked in the FIR are applicable. After his remarks drew sharp criticism from leaders of other parties, Warring apologised and clarified that Buta Singh was like a father figure to him. While I reaffirm and reiterate that I meant no disrespect to late Sardar Buta Singh, if anyone has felt hurt, I tender my unconditional apology, he added. After the Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission, the National Scheduled Caste Committee has also sought a report from the Tarn Taran deputy commissioner and SSP within seven days.

Rahul's claims on vote manipulation in Haryana unfounded: EC officials
NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi's vote manipulation charge is unfounded as no appeals were filed against the electoral rolls in Haryana, Election Commission officials said on Wednesday. The poll body officials were reacting to Gandhi's claim that 25 lakh entries were fake and that the Haryana assembly polls last year were stolen. Poll body officials also questioned why Congress' booth agents did not flag voters who had cast vote multiple times in the Haryana assembly elections in October 2024. Why were no claims and objections raised by INC's Booth Level Agents during revision to avoid multiple names? an official said, countering Gandhi's allegation. Booth-level agents or BLAs are appointed by political parties to flag irregularities, if any, in electoral rolls. Further hitting out at Gandhi, EC officials underlined that zero appeals were filed against electoral rolls and only 22 election petitions were currently pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. An election petition can be filed within 45 days of the announcement of results in the high court of that state. What were the polling agents of INC doing in the polling stations? They are supposed to object if the elector has already voted or if the polling agents doubt the identity of the elector, the official said. Referring to EC's efforts to clean up the voters' list across states, officials wondered whether Gandhi is supporting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) which removes duplicate, dead and shifted voters along with verification of citizenship. Or is he opposing SIR, an official asked. Why were no claims and objections raised by INC's BLAs during revision to avoid multiple names in Bihar. Why were no claims and objections raised by INC's BLAs during revision to avoid multiple names in Haryana, the official quipped. The BJP won 48 seats in the 2024 Haryana assembly polls. The Congress, which was predicted to win by many exit polls, won 37 seats. The INLD won two seats while independent candidates bagged three in the 90-member Assembly. On the issue of zero house number, they said 'House Number Zero' is also for houses where Panchayat and Municipalities have not given house numbers. House Number zero has been given by booth-level officers where no house number is allotted by municipalities/panchayats.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today urged the Union Government to reopen the Kartarpur corridor and demanded that trade with Pakistan through the Attari-Wagah route be resumed, as he paid obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. After offering prayers at the Golden Temple, CM Mann, accompanied by his wife Gurpreet Kaur, told the media that he prayed for progress, peace, and harmony in Punjab. To a question on the reopening of the Kartarpur corridor, Mann said the Central Government should take the initiative on its own. What is the use if they reopen it only when someone writes to them? They should reopen it on their own. Now cricket matches are also being played with them (Pakistan). Devotees even return after four to five hours after paying obeisance at Kartarpur Sahib. Therefore, the home ministry and external affairs ministry should reopen the Kartarpur corridor, he demanded. Mann also pointed out that trade with Pakistan through Gujarat continues. Matches are also being played with them. People of both countries want peace, he added. Asked about the resumption of trade through the Attari-Wagah route, the Chief Minister said, Definitely, it should resume. Lakhs of people will get jobs. Our trade will expand. We have been demanding this from time to time. The Kartarpur corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan the final resting place of Sikhisms founder Guru Nanak Dev to the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjabs Gurdaspur district. India had closed its side of the Kartarpur corridor following heightened tensions with Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

Law is morality in another guise, says documentary filmmaker Paromita Vohra
Writer, filmmaker, and feminist Paromita Vohra has spent decades telling stories about women, work, pleasure, and the politics of everyday life, often through a lens that is curious, disruptive, and deeply humane. The maker of acclaimed documentaries, she uses witty and reflective language to explore feminism in contemporary India (Unlimited Girls), examines gender and access with a mundane but necessary utility like public toilets (Q2P), and probes the worlds of copyright and creativity (Partners in Crime). She is also a two-time winner of the Ladli Gender and Media Awards for Best campaign video. Paromita is also known for her pioneering digital project Agents of Ishq, a joyful, inclusive space that talks about sex, love, and desire in the languages of everyday Indians. As the platform turns ten this year, the anthology of essays, comics, and confessions, titled Love, Sex and India published by Westland will be released at the upcoming Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest. Now, after a 14-year hiatus from filmmaking, she returns with Working Girls, a documentary that turns its gaze towards the invisible labour of women, from sex workers in Mumbai, farmers in Maharashtra, domestic workers in the North East, to ASHA workers in Kerala. The film is part of a project about women's paid and unpaid care work, called The Laws of Social Reproduction, conceptualised by academic Prabha Kotiswaran and builds on its research. In a free-wheeling chat, after a recent screening of the film in Kochi organsed by the Kerala Federation of Women Lawyers (KFWL), Paromita speaks about filming across India, the meanings of solidarity and friendship, and why the Constitution continues to resonate most deeply with those who live on the margins. A scene from 'Working Girls' depicting domestic workers in Hyderabad Excerpts: There are moments in the film where the women talk about democracy, Ambedkar and the Constitution. What were your thoughts? I saw it everywhere I went. People spoke about the Constitution with such respect and intimacy. Vanita, one of the women in the film, who is a sex worker, had the preamble of the Constitution pinned to her wall. Working Girls is about invisible labour, but at a deeper level, its about how law creates invisibility. The central question of the film is: Why has the law been created in such a way that this kind of work remains unseen and unvalued? Law, to me, is morality in another guise, and it often serves privilege. It maintains it. Look at the sex work law. It was shaped, in part, by upper-caste women who thought they were helping by criminalising sex work. But what they really did was make sex workers more marginalised and vulnerable. The Constitution, however, is something else. Its not law, its a set of principles, a moral imagination of equality. And thats how these women see it. They understand that the Constitution represents a spirit a spirit of justice, solidarity, dignity. Working Girlsalso portrays the friendship among women left out of traditional family systems . What is your opinion? Ive never had a fixed idea of family. My mothers side was in films; my maternal grandmother (Ashalata Biswas) was an actress and producer, while my fathers family was regular Punjabi. So I grew up between two worlds one orderly and one wonderfully messy. In my parents circle, friendship was kinship. People lived together, cared for each other, and became amuh-bola family by affection, not blood. Among the sex workers I filmed, I saw that same tenderness, elderly women cared for by others with a love that was both political and personal. When Bishakha Laskar (a sex worker) says, Your sorrow and my pain are the same, it encapsulates that. A scene from 'Working Girls' where sex workers engage in 'Sindoor Khela' during durga puja Behind the scenes of 'Working Girls' How long didit take to make Working Girls and how did the structure evolve? Just under two years, and it was hard (laughs). Not only physically but also emotionally. I had to let go of control. My earlier films were more planned, butWorking Girlsbegan with openness. I told myself dont define, go listen, and build from what you find. I did not script it. The first time you meet anyone in the film, you dont see them at work. You see them cooking, laughing, praying. Only later do you learn what they do. That way, the audience meets them as people, and not as subjects. As a young man noted after the screening at Kochi, the film felt 'intersectional' rather than just claiming to be. That was the intention of the film. Because living intersectionality means inhabiting discomfort, being unsteady, yet alive to difference, not merely aware of it. Working Girls isnt just about invisible labour though, but about invisible lives as well. The movie also looks into the lived experiences of sex workers. Could you elaborate? Yes. The film begins as a conversation about work, about the ways in which womens labour is seen, unseen, or made invisible. Sex work sits at a peculiar intersection of morality, class, gender, and economics. Its one of the most honest mirrors of how society thinks about womens work dependent on it, wanting it, yet ashamed of it. The women in the film are not victims or victors; they are workers. They just arent recognised as such because our legal and moral frameworks refuse to see their labour as legitimate. When you see older sex workers caring for each other sharing food, laughter, pain you realise its not just survival. Its a collective life, an ethics of care built from nothing but mutual struggle and a sense of humanity. A scene from 'Working Girls', where a 'madam' of a brothel shows the electoral ink on her finger The humour and music in your films are unconventional. How do these elements come together? Humour isnt something you bolt on; its who you are. Its about rhythm, timing, and presence. I like irony, not ridicule, and gentle satire that pokes but affectionately. It is called Tanz in Urdu. People often think seriousness and humour are opposites! Life doesnt work like that. People make jokes even at funerals, not out of denial, but as a way to cope. So why should art be any different? Music, too, has been part of my life since childhood; my grandfather (Anil Biswas) was a composer. I use music not to manipulate emotion but to let the audience stand with the people in the film, through a sensory and emotional connection that music architects. Music should create a universal human connection not hierarchy. It should let the audience stand beside the people in the film ,not look down on them through false pathos. For Working Girls , I wanted the music to be large, saturated and contemporary, because the film moves across so many cities, times, and languages. A scene from 'Working Girls' depicting the ASHA workers in Kerala How was your experience filming with the ASHA workers in Kerala? It was incredible. I spent three days with them, filming alone. I dont speak Malayalam and depended on gestures and tone. The women like Rosamma (state vice-president of the Kerala Asha Health Workers Association) and Shantamma were articulate, warm, and full of grace. Rosamma says in the film that the Constitution is everybodys not one partys. That kind of clarity is stunning. There was also this hilarious moment. When I arrived, the strike had entered its 27th day, and I was suddenly told, Youll give the inaugural speech. Iwas surprised, and had never given a speech but I didn't feel entitled to refuse, I spoke briefly about care work, then sang an old activist song, Zinda hai toh zindagi ki jeet mein yakeen kar. Everyone joined in. Later I realised they wanted me to speak because I was the only outsider, it mattered that someone had come all the way just to stand with them. Thats the thing about workers movements: theyll always make you part of it, but on their terms. Thats their form of leadership. Thats their form of leadership. Watching them sleep on pavements after long days of striking. it was humbling. For people like me, who rarely have to fight like that, its a lesson in solidarity. It makes you more human. You act, however small the act, and that changes you. A scene from 'Working Girls' How did you find your way to filmmaking? How were your early days in Bombay like? I never had a fixed plan. I was drawn to books, ideas, and music. Film felt like the perfect place for all of it politics, poetry, people. When I began in the 1990s, documentary filmmaking wasnt a career. My first one, Annapurna , was about a womens credit cooperative in the mill area of Bombay. After that, I made A Womans Place , wrote scripts for Channel V, acted in English, August ( won the Best Feature Film in English in the 42 National Film Awards) and freelanced for TV. It was a polyglot life. I lived alone and it wasnt about being 'bold', I dislike that word. I wanted to discover who I was. Some days were thrilling, others lonely or frightening. But thats what your twenties are for. Scene from the sugarcane farms in Latur, Maharashtra How has it been to screenWorking Girlsacross the country? Unprecedented. When I madeUnlimited Girls, I spent an entire year travelling with it, showing it wherever people would watch. It had been rejected by every single film festival big or small, international or Indian but now has a cult status. Working Girlshas been another kind of experience altogether. I didnt make a film for fourteen years, so I honestly didnt know if anyone even remembered that I made films. And then, registration for the first screening filled up in three hours. People were so eager to see it and have been connecting with it. I hear audiences laughing, reacting to different parts of the movie in different cities. Seeing them emerge from the film moved and full of emotion. A filmmaker could ask for little more.
