Vijay Hazare Trophy: Out-of-favour India batter Sarfaraz Khan smashed a blistering 157 off 75 balls as Mumbai defeated Goa by 87 runs in an Elite Group C clash of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya ground on Wednesday. Sarfaraz, 27, reached his third List A century in just 56 deliveries, as his explosive knock, featuring nine fours and 14 sixes, dismantled Goa's bowling attack. Mumbai's middle order capitalised on the conditions after Goa elected to field first. Yashasvi Jaiswal, returning from acute gastroenteritis, and Musheer Khan added 70 runs for the second wicket before Jaiswal fell for 46. Brothers Sarfaraz and Musheer then combined for a 93-run third-wicket partnership before the former cut loose. He scored 104 runs off 46 balls against spinners Misal and Lalit Yadav, while captain Shardul Thakur plundered 26 runs in a single over from Shubham Tari. Hardik Tamore's quickfire 53 off 28 balls and Tanush Kotian's unbeaten 23 off 12 deliveries propelled Mumbai to their second-highest List A total. Chasing 445, Goa stumbled early after openers Arjun Tendulkar and Kashyap Bakle failed to build on their starts. Abhinav Tejrana fought back with a century off 70 balls, adding 117 runs with Lalit for the fifth wicket. Captain Deepraj Gaonkar's explosive 70 off 28 balls delayed the inevitable, but Goa were eventually bowled out for 357, giving Mumbai their fourth straight win in the tournament. Meanwhile, Punjab registered a convincing six-wicket victory over Himachal Pradesh, thanks to Sukhdeep Bajwa's four-wicket haul and fifties from Prabhsimran Singh and Anmolpreet Singh. Bajwas four wickets helped Punjab restrict Himachal Pradesh to 227, with Naman Dhir chipping in by taking two scalps. In reply, Punjab's batsmen made light work of the target. Prabhsimran top-scored with 84, while Anmolpreet contributed a steady 72. Dhir then completed an all-round performance by remaining unbeaten on 50 to guide Punjab home with six wickets in hand. On the other hand, Maharashtra delivered a commanding all-round performance to register a comprehensive 129-run victory over Uttarakhand. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front with a brilliant 124, while Satyajeet Bachhav provided crucial support with a 45-ball 56, and Ramakrishna Ghosh provided finishing touches with a blistering 47 off 31 deliveries. Uttarakhand's chase never gained momentum as Maharashtra's bowlers dominated proceedings. Bachhav followed up his batting heroics with three wickets, while Ramakrishna Ghosh chipped in with two crucial scalps, and Rajvardhan Hangargekar also took three wickets to bowl out Uttarakhand for 202. Brief scores: Mumbai 444/8 in 50 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 157, Musheer Khan 60; Darshan Misal 3-98) beat Goa 357/9 in 50 overs (Abhinav Tejrana 100, Deepraj Gaonkar 70; Shardul Thakur 3-20) by 87 runs Maharashtra 331/7 in 50 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 124, Satyajeet Bachhav 56; Devendra Bora 3-81) beat Uttarakhand 202 in 43.4 overs (Saurabh Rawat 56; Satyajeet Bachhav 3-22) by 129 runs Mumbai 444/8 in 50 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 157, Musheer Khan 60; Darshan Misal 3-98) beat Goa 357/9 in 50 overs (Abhinav Tejrana 100, Deepraj Gaonkar 70; Shardul Thakur 3-20) by 87 runs Also Read: Live Cricket Score Chhattisgarh 355/3 in 50 overs (Vikalp Tiwari 112 not out, Ayush Pandey 86; Mohammed Saptulla 1-24) beat Sikkim 126 all out in 34 overs (Gurinder Singh 47, Palzor Tamang 43; Dev Aditya Singh 4-25, Ajay Mandal 4-40) by 229 runs Article Source: IANS

With More Investments In Youngsters, IPL 2026 Gears Up For Further Growth
The Indian Premier League: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for yet another season, and there are plenty of things going on in terms of major changes, including opportunities for the growth of the league ahead of the 2026 season. The IPL Mini Auction in Abu Dhabi signified the restructuring of the rosters of the various franchises and has provided a new outlook on how the IPL will operate moving forward with an emphasis on developing a specific strategy for each of the various franchise's positions and creating greater amounts of foreign investment in the IPL, while also increasing the amount of reliance placed on the domestic T20 stars. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made Cameron Green the most expensive all-rounder in IPL history with a record-setting Rs 25.2 crore, demonstrating the significant amount of money being spent in this year's mini auction. However, due to the new auction rules, there are still limits to the amount of money that can be spent on a single player, meaning that the amount paid to Green is capped at Rs 18 crore and that the additional funds must be directed to the Welfare Fund established by the BCCI. The bidding between KKR and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Green was an indication of the overall value that Green provides, not only as a powerful run scorer but also as a quality medium-fast bowler who can perform under immense pressure. The signing of Green meant that Mitchell Starc's Rs 24.75 crore move to KKR in 2024 became the second most expensive overseas buy, but KKR had just begun their acquisition endeavours. With the biggest auction purse in IPL history of Rs 64.30 crore and having only retained 12 players from the previous season, KKR were both aggressive and soon successful with their acquisitions. Along with Green, KKR spent Rs 18 crore on Sri Lankan Matheesha Pathirana, as well as adding Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore. The acquisition of both Pathirana and Rahman showed KKR's intent to dominate not only the powerplay but also the death overs. Despite a modest return for Pathirana during IPL 2025, KKR appeared to gamble on his future potential to fill the void left by Andre Russell as a specialist finisher with the ball. Conversely, while KKR was heavily relying on overseas talent, CSK were focused on developing uncapped Indian players. CSK, with the second-highest purse of Rs 43.40 crore, did so by focusing on developing Indian talent instead of buying international players. CSK added youth and succession planning as priorities and spent a combined Rs 28.40 crore to add uncapped Indian players to their roster. The two most expensive uncapped purchases were Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Prashant Veer and Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, both of whom were purchased for Rs 14.20 crore each, making them the joint-most expensive uncapped players in IPL history. The previous record, set by Avesh Khans Rs 10 crore deal in 2023, has now been well surpassed. CSK's approach has changed significantly throughout IPL 2025 following an awful performance. By adding younger players, the franchise has improved its performance and has indicated that it will adapt to the current playing conditions of T20 cricket. Prashant is a young player who plays primarily in the lower order, has good potential as a batter and can bowl spin, and has been thought of as the long-term successor for Ravindra Jadeja, who has been an important part of CSK's team for a very long time. The addition of Kartik will also help to create competition for places in the wicket-keeper's position, as MS Dhoni is still expected to play in 2025. Other franchises have placed a great deal of value on domestic fast bowlers; Auqib Nabi, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, signed a contract for Rs 8.40 crore with Delhi Capitals, which will be his first IPL contract, following success in domestic cricket, where he performed well in both red-ball and white-ball formats, as well as his ability to bowl in death overs. Royal Challengers Bangalore, fresh off their long-awaited first title win in 2025, have continued to upgrade their roster. They have brought in left-arm pacer Mangesh Yadav for Rs 5.20 crore and fast bowling all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer for Rs 7 crore; a substantial drop from the Rs 23.75 crore price tag that the Kolkata Knight Riders paid for him when he was acquired at the mega-auction. The calculated approach of the RCB team appears to be a representation of their recent achievements. After experiencing years of near-victories, losses, and having come in second place three times, they finally got their first title in 2025 by defeating the Punjab Kings. This title has also helped RCB develop a much clearer approach to building their team with an emphasis on not being so rushed to put together a roster as opposed to earlier years and times. Regarding the auction numbers, the trends overall were similar. The total amount of money that was spent on 77 players was Rs 215.45 crore, and uncapped Indian players made up Rs 63.45 crore, which is close to 75% of what was spent on Indian players in the auction. T20 leagues in different states of India continue to be the best resource for scouting, as the players from the UP T20 league, MP Premier league, MP T20 league, and Delhi Premier league have shown their value and therefore, received the highest price tags in the auction. With good scouting practices at the ground level, franchises came to Abu Dhabi for the auction with a solid role profile written out for each player instead of just a list of names. At the other end of the spectrum, reputation alone no longer guaranteed security. High-profile overseas names like Liam Livingstone, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Devon Conway initially went unsold, while Indian batters Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan were picked up only at the base price. Even capped internationals outside national reckoning found little traction, with several sold for their minimum value. Regarding the auction numbers, the trends overall were similar. Also Read: Live Cricket Score The success of uncapped players attests to the pathway being a regularised model rather than an experimental one. The presence of RCB entering the season as the defending champions, KKR with numerous batsmen hitting the ball, the investment in young players by CSK, and the realignment of other franchises around roles rather than reputation make IPL 2026 a contest that is more about the scouts than the scorecards. From Gurugram Homes to Noida Offices: NCR's Real Estate Story in 2025
Housing emerged as the defining force behind NCR’s real estate recovery in 2025, setting the tone for a more measured and grounded market cycle. The year marked a clear shift towards end-user–driven demand, with homebuyers prioritising delivery certainty, livability and long-term value over speculative gains. NCR 2025: Connecting Luxury Living to Corporate Growth Gurugram remained NCR’s housing anchor in 2025, driven by sustained end-user demand in the luxury and upper-mid segments. In H1 2025, Delhi-NCR recorded over 5,100 luxury home sales, with Gurugram contributing the bulk of premium transactions, underscoring its dominance at the top end. Demand stayed concentrated along infrastructure-led corridors such as the Dwarka Expressway, SPR, and Golf Course Road, as buyers favoured larger, amenity-rich and lower-density homes. Sandeep Chhillar, Founder & Chairman, Landmark Group , says, “ 2025 has been a remarkable year for the real estate sector, registering impressive growth numbers across the residential and commercial markets in key cities. Within NCR, Gurugram led the growth, particularly in the luxury housing and Grade-A office segments, benefiting from corridor-led developments along Golf Course Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Dwarka Expressway, and SPR. The city witnessed a steep hike in price appreciation alongside healthy leasing activity for Grade A office space, primarily led by GCCs. The coming year outlook remains positive for the market with sustained demand expected in well-planned micro-markets, continued institutional interest, and infrastructure-led expansion ." Shyamrup Roy Choudhury, Founder and Managing Director, Aura World , adds, “ In 2025, demand in Gurugram stayed strong without feeling overheated. Further, the RBI’s total 125 basis points repo rate cut eased affordability pressures for buyers. More importantly, luxury homes today are being bought with a long-term mindset and not short-term gains. As we look toward 2026, that trend becomes even more relevant. With India’s economy expected to grow steadily, luxury housing will benefit from sustained wealth creation rather than cyclical spikes .” Ashwinder R Singh, Chair, CII Real Estate; Vice Chair, BCD Group; Advisor, NAR-India , says, " 2025 was less about cyclical movement and more about structural transformation. It was not the peak of a cycle but a pivot — from volume to value, speculation to purpose-driven development, and metro-led growth to regional diversification. Premiumisation overtook mass housing as aspirations reshaped demand and supply. Institutional capital remained committed but increasingly selective and disciplined. India’s real estate canvas diversified, with warehousing, data centres, senior housing, and integrated townships moving into the mainstream. The sector demonstrated resilience despite global headwinds such as interest-rate pressures and supply-chain disruptions. Finally, Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities began asserting themselves as the next growth frontiers. Based on 2025 trends and macro indicators, 2026 is likely to be defined by value-driven growth rather than sheer volume. Residential launches may slow in absolute numbers, but average ticket sizes are expected to rise as premium housing dominates supply. Affordable housing could remain under pressure unless supported by targeted policy interventions. Warehousing and industrial real estate are poised to remain the strongest growth engines, driven by manufacturing, logistics expansion, and infrastructure development across new corridors. The office sector is expected to stay in consolidation mode, with occupiers favouring high-quality Grade-A spaces over speculative supply. If guided by quality, clarity, and discipline, real estate can emerge as one of the foundational pillars of India’s growth story, leading up to 2030. " Sauarbh Saharan, Group Managing Director, HCBS Developments , says, “ The demand for luxury housing reached a new peak across NCR, making 2025 an exceptional year for the real estate sector. Improved infrastructure visibility and better access to Delhi played a critical role in this confidence, and corridors like Dwarka Expressway clearly benefited from that shift. The quality of enquiries also improved markedly this year. Heading into 2026, with wealth creation continuing and social infrastructure maturing, we expect these well-connected luxury corridors to remain stable, resilient and strongly preferred .” Tier-II cities also emerge as aspirational housing destinations, supported by affordability and improving connectivity. Mohali, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Jaipur witnessed steady residential traction for lifestyle housing and plotted developments. Anarock data shows land transactions in H1 2025 has surpassed full-year 2024 levels, and Tier-II and Tier-III cities accounting for a larger share of overall land deals than Tier-I markets. Piyush Kansal, Executive Director of Royale Estate Group , says, “ In 2025, the Punjab real estate market demonstrated both resilience and maturity. Strong infrastructure momentum from enhanced connectivity around Mohali to expanding urbanisation in Tier-2 cities has underpinned steady residential and commercial demand, particularly in well-planned townships and mixed-use zones. NRI investments in cities like Amritsar surged significantly, reflecting growing confidence in premium and lifestyle properties. Although selective price corrections, such as those seen in Mohali’s industrial land auctions, indicate a more calibrated investment landscape, overall fundamentals remain solid .” Preksha Singh, CEO of Agrasheel Infratech , says, " One of the most important shifts in 2025 was how Tier-II cities began writing their own housing growth stories, rather than borrowing momentum from metros. Lucknow is a strong example. The city defies the trend with a 25% jump in the sale of residential units, led by the end-users, local businessmen, and professionals moving back to the city owing to the better quality of life on offer. This has ensured a balanced and healthy real estate cycle. Going into 2026, Tier-II cities are set for more growth, due to the economic stability, better connectivity, and the need for lifestyle-driven living options, away from the muddled traffic conditions of the metro cities ." While Gurugram’s housing-led momentum set the residential tone for NCR in 2025, the region’s commercial confidence found its strongest expression in Noida–Greater Noida with sustained demand from IT services, GCCs, data centres and manufacturing-linked occupiers. Viren Mehta, Founder & Director- Elite PRO Infra , says, " In 2025, Indian real estate shifted from reactive moves to a more structured and strategic approach. Buyers and occupiers became increasingly selective, focusing on location, long-term value, and operational efficiency. This shift led to certain micro-markets and asset classes outperforming others. Overall, the sector is showing signs of maturity, with greater stability and clearer opportunities for sustainable growth moving into 2026. Demand is now driven by quality and practicality rather than speculation, and stakeholders are making decisions with a long-term perspective. This evolution points to a healthier market where informed choices shape outcomes across segments ." Sanchit Bhutani, Managing Director, Group 108 , said, “ 2025 marks a clear inflection points for retail growth in the Noida–Greater Noida region. We saw strong interest from both global and domestic brands across well-performing and emerging retail destinations, with many actively establishing and expanding their presence—particularly along the Noida Expressway. The upcoming Noida International Airport is acting as a significant catalyst, reshaping brand perspectives on catchment strength, connectivity, and long-term footfall potential. Consequently, we are seeing rising demand for strategically located, high-quality retail developments .” As NCR moves ahead, 2025 stands out as a year that marked the region’s transition into a more mature and clearly defined real estate phase. With housing-led stability anchored by end-user demand and commercial-led confidence reinforced by quality leasing, volatility across markets remained contained. Clearer role definition across Gurugram, Noida–Greater Noida and emerging Tier-II cities will continue bringing greater depth and resilience to the region’s property cycle.
BJP turned 'Vande Mataram' into language of hate: Congress leader Surjewala
CHANDIGARH: Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Tuesday alleged that the BJP had turned the slogan Vande Mataram, which signifies respect for the motherland, into a language of hatred. He accused the BJP of following a divisive political model in Haryana by repeatedly pitting communities against each other. He said the state has been divided along multiple lines over the years- Jat versus non-Jat, Punjabi versus Aggarwal, Ravidasia versus Valmiki among the poor, Sikh versus Hindu, and attempts to create divisions between Brahmins and economically weaker sections. The Rajya Sabha MP alleged that the party polarised communities in Mewat by dividing Hindus and Muslims. The leader said that the spread of hatred has reached such an extent that even Kaithal-Kapisthal, regarded as a sacred land associated with Lord Krishna's teachings, is witnessing people abusing and branding their own as outsiders. Appealing to the people of Haryana, especially the youth and farmers, he asked who was responsible for sowing the crop of hatred in a state known for feeding the nation through agriculture. He said the time for silence was over and urged people to rise above divisions and follow the message of love, duty and righteousness as taught in the Bhagavad Gita. When the law appears helpless before offenders, the only remaining hope lies in the collective conscience and wisdom of the people of Haryana, Surjewala said.

CHANDIGARH, Dec 29 : Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday accused the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee of failing to find the 328 missing saroops (sacred copies) of Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib, and accused it of using the Akal Takht as a shield to protect its masters. Punjab CM Mann, SGPC set for showdown over 328 missing 'saroops' of Guru Granth Sahib
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) are all set for a showdown regarding the 328 missing 'saroops' of the Guru Granth Sahib. CM Mann on Monday slammed the SGPC for allegedly using the Akal Takht and Panth (community) as a shield to evade action against their 'misdeeds'. The Sikh clergy (five high priests) hit back, asking the Aam Aadmi Party government to stop meddling in their internal matters or face action according to 'Panthic' traditions. Addressing a press conference, CM Mann said that for the last few years the Sikh community has been deeply anguished as no action has been taken over the disappearance of the 328 saroops of the Guru Granth Sahib. The panthic organizations and Sant Samaj have for long demanded action in this regard and have even approached the state government for this purpose. As its moral responsibility, the government has lodged an FIR in this regard and constituted a SIT to probe the matter, he added. Mann said, The interim committee of the SGPC in its meeting in 2020 passed a resolution for severe action against the erring employees of the committee and publishers in the case. However, surprisingly no action was taken in this regard despite several irregularities though the SGPC had earlier itself passed a resolution to register criminal cases against influential persons like former Chief Secretary Dr Roop Singh and others. It had also been decided to terminate all services from SS Kohli and Associates (a chartered accountant firm) and recover 75 per cent of payments made. However, as SS Kohli was rendering services as the CA of Akali leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, the action is still hanging fire. He claimed that the SGPC says that the state government is meddling in the affairs of the panth which is not true as the SGPC had passed a resolution for criminal action against the accused, for which the state government has to take action. However, to save the skin of the influential persons who are involved in this sin, the SGPC has later taken back all its resolutions, he added. Mann said the SGPC wants every power but does not want to be accountable to the people. He added that though the SGPC has failed in its duty to find the missing saroops, the Punjab government will ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are punished as per the law of the land. On the other hand, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the matter related to the sacred saroops of the Guru Granth Sahib would be placed before the sangat with complete facts on Tuesday. He stated that during the meeting of the five high priests at the Akal Takht, it was clearly directed that no one should indulge in politics on this issue. However, CM Mann is attempting to mislead the sangat on this matter, he said. He appealed to the sangat to remain cautious of the politics being played over this sensitive issue. The five high priests held a meeting on Sunday to deliberate on various matters including the missing sacred saroops, making of films on Sikh subjects, and conducting Anand Karaj at non-gurdwara venues. They asserted that the SGPC is the democratically elected Panthic organisation of Sikhs, and according to the constitution of India, no government can directly or indirectly interfere in the internal affairs of any religion. The government's legal action is being justified on the basis of the Ishar Singh Investigation Commission report, whereas it is clearly mentioned on its page number 230 that this matter should be resolved through the Akal Takht authority and institutions of SGPC, instead of governmental law or police mechanisms, they said. They added, If any political party makes such an attempt, it will be answerable to the Akal Takht and will be deemed guilty of betraying the Panth. The state government and the ruling political party are warned that if they do not stop interfering in this internal matter of Sikhs, action will be taken in accordance with Panthic traditions. On December 7, the Punjab Police registered a case against 16 people, including a former SGPC chief secretary, in connection with the disappearance of the saroops in 2020. The SGPC had earlier said that the FIR registration was a direct challenge to the Akal Takht and an unwarranted interference in its administrative rights.

Punjab BJP chief claims AAP govt provided only 26 days of employment on average under MGNREGA
CHANDIGARH: Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab Government, Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Sunil Jakhar said that the government was acting like an event management company. He claimed that the state government was providing 26 days of employment on average under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and demanded a white paper on the 'corruption' under this scheme over the past four years. His remark came as the government has called a one-day special session of the assembly on December 30, 2025, against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act brought in by the union govenrment, which replaces the 20-year-old MGNREGA. He alleged that the AAP government has failed on every front and has no achievements to count. It keeps rolling out new propaganda every day. It would be better if the government used a special session to discuss the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state and to deliberate on the frequent murders and extortion threats being reported almost daily, he added. Jakhar said that the AAP government was preparing for yet another propaganda exercise. Accusing the Mann government of misleading the poor, Jakhar said the dispensation had got forms filled out and thumb impressions registered, while failing to provide 100 days of employment to poor people. The AAP government is troubled since the Central government is promising to stop corruption in the MGNREGA scheme and provide 125 days of work instead of 100. Talking about the Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhans recent visit to Punjab, he said people from every district highlighted corruption in the MGNREGA scheme. Mann should issue a white paper on the corruption under this scheme over the past four years. During the current fiscal year, the government was providing 26 days of employment on average, whereas in the previous years, it managed just 38 days of employment on average. This exposes the anti-poor face of the AAP government, the drama of convening special sessions is only meant to hide its shortcomings, said Jakhar while referring to earlier special sessions of the assembly He also raised questions on the status of the draft law against sacrilege, which got sent to a select committee. He also asked about the outcome of the special session convened after a charge that crores of rupees were being offered to AAP MLAs for defection. Similarly, the government has been silent on the status of Punjab's agricultural policy he said. To escape accountability for this failure, the government is repeatedly calling special sessions, which will bring no benefit other than placing an additional financial burden on the people of Punjab, Jakhar said. Congress to hit streets to save MGNREGA replaced by VB G RAM Act
Even Rahul Tewatia: Former India captain Anil Kumble believes IPL 2022 winners Gujarat Titans (GT) can no longer lean heavily on leg-spinner Rashid Khan, saying that the Afghanistan star's impact has diminished and the novelty factor has worn off a little. GT, who bowed out in the Eliminator of IPL 2025, boasted one of the strongest bowling units, but Rashid endured his poorest campaign in the competition. He managed to pick only nine wickets at an average of 57.11 and an economy rate of 9.35. Rashid also conceded 33 sixes - the most by any bowler in a single IPL season - as batters found ways to dominate him. Kumble also felt the Shubman Gill-led franchise would need greater contributions from left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, as well as off-spin bowling all-rounders Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia, to remain competitive in IPL 2026. I think the novelty of Rashid Khan has worn off a little. There are many similar bowlers available now, so he is no longer as intimidating as he was before. His workload has to be managed more, along with bowlers like Sai Kishore. Even Rahul Tewatia and Washington Sundar can contribute more for GT this season, said Kumble, a former RCB player and ex-Punjab Kings head coach, on JioStar. Kumble also felt the Shubman Gill-led franchise would need greater contributions from left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, as well as off-spin bowling all-rounders Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia, to remain competitive in IPL 2026. Cold wave, dense fog grip north and east India
Large parts of north and eastern India continued to reel under intense cold and dense fog on Saturday, disrupting normal life and prompting weather warnings across several states. Sub-zero temperatures were recorded in Kashmir, while parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Jharkhand and West Bengal reported cold day or cold wave conditions, according to the India Meteorological Department. In Uttar Pradesh, dense to very dense fog prevailed across many districts, with daytime temperatures remaining well below normal. Gorakhpur recorded a maximum of 13.2 degrees Celsius, 7.4 degrees below average, while Prayagraj saw a high of 16.8 degrees Celsius, down by over six degrees. Varanasi, Bareilly, Etawah, Bahraich and Barabanki also reported daytime temperatures four to six degrees below normal. Minimum temperatures in the state ranged between 6 and 11 degrees Celsius, with Etawah recording a low of 6.2 degrees. In Lucknow, the maximum temperature stood at 18 degrees Celsius, while high humidity levels contributed to gloomy conditions. The weather department forecast dense fog during late night and morning hours, with dry weather likely to continue. Rajasthan also witnessed cold and dry conditions, with fog reported at isolated places in the Udaipur and Kota divisions. Karauli was the coldest location in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 3.1 degrees Celsius. Jaipur registered a low of 9.6 degrees, while Barmer recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 29 degrees Celsius. The weather is expected to remain cold and dry in the coming days. Punjab and Haryana remained in the grip of intense cold, with dense fog enveloping several areas. In Punjab, Ballowal Saunkhri in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district was the coldest at 4.4 degrees Celsius. Gurugram recorded the lowest temperature in Haryana at 4.9 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 6.9 degrees Celsius. Dense fog also covered the national capital on Saturday morning, while air quality remained in the very poor category. The overall Air Quality Index stood at 355 at 9 am, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board. Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius, with foggy conditions likely to persist through the day. Cold weather conditions prevailed across West Bengal as well, with Darjeeling emerging as the coldest place in the state at 5.8 degrees Celsius. In the plains, Alipurduar recorded a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius. Shallow to moderate fog is likely to continue over parts of the state over the next few days, the IMD said. In Jammu and Kashmir, night temperatures dipped below freezing at most places due to clear skies. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, while Sonamarg was the coldest place in the Union Territory at minus 5.8 degrees. The weather office has forecast generally dry conditions till December 29, with the possibility of rain and snowfall around New Years Eve. Holy city tag puts meat, alcohol, tobacco traders in Amritsars walled city at risk
CHANDIGARH: The ban on meat, alcohol and tobacco shops in the walled city of Amritsar, following its notification as a holy city by the AAP-led Punjab government, has put the livelihoods of hundreds of families at risk, casting uncertainty over generations-old businesses. The notification, issued to preserve the sanctity of the area surrounding the Golden Temple, has resulted in around 150 establishments selling meat, fish, alcohol and tobacco being allegedly forced to shut down. Traders and shopkeepers have raised strong objections, saying they were neither given adequate notice nor provided with alternative arrangements. The affected shopkeepers and vendors have decided to meet the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner, the Municipal Corporation Commissioner and the Mayor, and submit a memorandum highlighting their concerns. They held a meeting at Gol Bagh on Friday, during which they argued that instead of covering the entire walled city, the government should have restricted the ban to areas immediately surrounding the Golden Temple and Durgiana Mandir. While stating that they have no objection to the walled city being declared a holy city, Gurjeet Singh, a third-generation owner of Gurjeet Fish Company, said the decision threatens the existence of Punjabs oldest wholesale fish market. There are three major fish markets in Punjab, in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Here in Amritsar, we have 14 commission agents (artiyas) in the wholesale fish market, which has existed for the last 70 years. We procure fish from Vietnam, Himachal Pradesh and other places, and sell it across the state. Our fish even goes to Srinagar, he said. Singh said they have already met the Mayor and will now meet the Deputy Commissioner. Our demand is simple. The fish season is starting from January and runs till April. Until then, we should not be relocated. After that, the government should provide all 14 of us a suitable place together within Amritsar, and not far away, as the market functions collectively, he added. Rajinder Kumar, a fourth-generation fish trader, claimed that there are 18 suppliers, with each shop employing several workers. This was the first wholesale fish market of the state and even today supplies fish across Punjab. With this order, generations of business are affected, he said. We respect the governments decision to maintain the sanctity and holiness of the city, but our concerns must be addressed. Our businesses will be shut and we have not been given adequate time to shift, nor have we been allotted any place to relocate, said another shopkeeper, Saranjit Singh. Amritsar Hotel and Restaurant Association president AK Chattha said that meat, fish and tobacco shop owners operating within the walled city would be severely affected by the ban. A survey conducted by the Amritsar Municipal Corporation has identified around 150 shops and street vendors that are to be removed from the walled city following the notification. Senior Punjab BJP leader Rajinder Mohan Singh Chinna said the decision to grant holy city status to the walled city of Amritsar was not new, noting that a previous SAD-BJP government had taken a similar step. The fish market operating in the walled city should first have been shifted and relocated after being provided a proper place by the government. Only then should this decision have been implemented. Now the question is, where will they go, he said. Calling the notification historic but long overdue, Punjab BJP leader and former bureaucrat Jagmohan Singh Raju wrote to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, demanding a comprehensive rehabilitation policy for shopkeepers, vendors and workers affected by the prohibition. Declaring the walled city of Amritsar as a holy city is a historic step, but it must be implemented with foresight. Sanctity cannot come at the cost of livelihoods. The Chief Minister must direct the administration to immediately identify and survey the affected persons and establishments, provide alternative business sites or zones, and extend financial assistance, compensation or livelihood support during the transition period. Rehabilitation is not a concession; it is a responsibility, he wrote. The ban has also sparked a wider debate. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Kiranjot Kaur said that jhatka meat is a right under Sikh tradition. Tobacco and kutha (halal) remain prohibited in Sikhism, but jhatka aligns with the Gurus hunting traditions. There should not be any ban on meat shops, she wrote in a Facebook post. Meanwhile, a senior Punjab AAP leader said the state government would ensure proper rehabilitation. Those whose businesses have been affected will be provided alternative arrangements in a phased and planned manner. The local administration will consult those affected and work out the best possible and mutually acceptable solution to ensure livelihoods are not affected, the leader said. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had announced on Sunday that the state government had issued a notification granting holy city status to the walled city of Amritsar, Talwandi Sabo and Anandpur Sahib.

Bravery awards for 9-yr-old, 11-yr-old posthumously
NEW DELHI: Nine-year-old Vyoma Priya lost her life while trying to save a six-year-old during an electrical accident in their gated community park in Tamil Nadus Coimbatore. Kamlesh Kumar, an 11-vear-old, died while bravely attempting to save another child in the Durgawati river near Jaipur village in Bihars Kaimur district. The two were among the 20 young boys and girls who were conferred with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2025 by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday. Lauding the award-winning children for bringing pride to their families, communities, and the entire country, the President said, The greatness of a country is certain when its children are filled with patriotism and high ideals. Remembering the brave deeds of the two children who were awarded posthumously, she said, Nine-year-old daughter Vyoma Priya and 11-year-old brave son Kamlesh Kumar lost their lives while saving the lives of others with their courage. The President also conferred the awards in six categories bravery, art and culture, environment, social service, science and technology and sports. The President praised 10-year-old Shravan Singh from Chak Taran Wali, Ferozepur, Punjab, who showed exceptional courage during Operation Sindoor by making daily high-risk supply runs to frontline soldiers and motivating his family and community to support the Army, despite constant threats from hostile drones. Shravan Singh, amidst the risks associated with war during Operation Sindoor, regularly delivered water, milk, and lassi to the Indian soldiers stationed at the border near his home. Whereas, the differently-abled daughter Shivani Hosuru Uppara has achieved extraordinary accomplishments in the world of sports, overcoming economic and physical limitations, she said. It is because of talented children such as the seven-year-old Vaka Lakshmi Pragnika that India is considered a chess powerhouse on the world stage. Ajay Raj and Mohammed Sidan P, who saved the lives of others with their bravery and intelligence, deserve the praise they receive, she said. Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made a name for himself in the highly competitive and talent-filled world of cricket and has set many records, she added. Among those the President mentioned was Muhammed Sidan P, an 11-year-old Class 6 student from Palakkad, Kerala. He saved his two friends from electrocution while they waited for their school bus. Talking about the significance of the Veer Bal Diwas, the president said that about 320 years ago, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, and his four sons had made the supreme sacrifices while fighting for truth and justice.
2025 In A Nutshell: Bluru's culinary voice showed global awareness and local character
Bengaluru entered 2025 with quiet confidence and a renewed sense of self-belief. Once identified largely with craft beer and casual dining, the city has matured into one of Indias compelling culinary destinations. Innovation, global awareness and local character now coexist with ease, marking a year of consolidation rather than catch up. One of the most significant developments was the rise of a young and assured generation of restaurateurs. Ingredient-driven menus, open fire cooking, local sourcing and playful presentation were matched with pared back spaces that prioritised energy over excess. New ventures such as Riko, ParTTwo, Baan Phad Thai, Crackle, Fireside, Fervor, Circa 11 and Comal brought fresh perspectives and clear identities. These restaurants struck a chord with younger diners who value authenticity, creativity and relevance over formality. Across the city, chefs moved towards tighter and more cuisine-focused menus. Restaurants such as Rosmarino by Abhijit Saha and Pinocchio by Giuseppe delivered comfort with clarity and finesse. Reservation-only favourites, including Sando Club, Guerilla Diner and NARU, remained among the hardest tables to secure, reflecting a growing preference for intimate, focused dining experiences over large format restaurants. Bengalurus chef-driven establishments also continued to gain recognition beyond India. Farmlore stood out for its soil to plate philosophy, progressive tasting menus and deep engagement with local landscapes. Vegetarian dining, supported by inventive mocktail programmes, gained strong momentum. Restaurants such as Kalpaney, GAIA, Phurr, MOAI and Tuk Tuk Thai built loyal and repeat audiences. Hotels responded decisively to the citys evolving food culture. Recognising that diners increasingly seek narrative and creativity, luxury properties refreshed legacy concepts and introduced new ones. The Ritz Carlton with Yan Yan and Zarqash, ITC Gardenia with Cajsa and Edo, Conrad with Indian Durbars celebration of Punjabi heritage, The Park with Italia, The Oberoi with its Decked Out at Lapis series and JW Marriott with The Patio led this shift. Visiting chef collaborations, international pop ups, themed bar takeovers and curated pairing dinners repositioned restaurants as lively social spaces rather than formal dining rooms. The transition from pub-centric drinking to a more nuanced cocktail culture became firmly entrenched in 2025. Intimate bars, chef-influenced beverage programmes and compact speakeasy-style venues reshaped how the city drank. Cocktail menus became concise and narrative-led, with emphasis on technique, clarified cocktails, fermentation and seasonality. Bars such as Sama, Dali & Gala, Muro, Copitas, Siren, Una Hacienda, Aqua, One Floor Down, Mirth, Doubble and Middle Room exemplified this evolution. International recognition for SOKA, ZLB23 and Bar Spirit Forward further cemented Bengalurus reputation as a bar destination to watch. At the same time, neighbourhood favourites such as Bobs Bar, Quarter House, Yaakay Bar and Canteen and Tommys enjoyed renewed attention, proving that affordability and personality remain essential. Old school institutions, including Dolphins, Pecos, 13th Floor and Chin Lung, reaffirmed the enduring appeal of nostalgia. The year also saw a touch of glamour added to the citys dining landscape with the arrival of Kai Bar & Kitchen, Cahoots, Cavore and Yazu Pan Asian Supper Club, bringing polish, energy and theatrical flair. Comfort food continued to anchor Bengalurus dining habits. Pizzas drew devoted followings at Serious Slice, 23rd Street Pizza, La Gioia, and Pizza 4Ps. Pretzels gained popularity at Bcker & Charlie and German BrezelHaus. Burgers from Beyondburg, Smash Guys, Krok, Leons and Truffles remained crowd pullers. Desserts from June Bakehouse, Deliciae, MAKI, Belagio, Amintiri, Lavonne, Nenapu, Conu, Magnolia, Klava, Smoor and Anand satisfied the citys sweet tooth, while queues stayed steady for ice creams at LICK, Milano, Corner House, Ulo and Amadora. Data from a leading food delivery platform revealed shifts in consumption. Late-night orders grew three times faster than dinner orders, with pizzas, burgers, biryanis and cakes dominating demand. Health-focused meals more than doubled, driven by protein-forward choices, calorie awareness and reduced sugar. Indian diners also displayed growing curiosity, with Korean, Vietnamese and Mexican cuisines steadily moving into the mainstream. If one colour defined Bengalurus food and beverage mood in 2025, it was green. Matcha emerged as a defining flavour across cafes and dessert counters, while coffee continued its steady ascent. Specialty roasters spotlighted Indian beans, experimental processing and origin-led storytelling, establishing coffee as a lifestyle marker at The Kind, Trippy Goat, Paper & Pie, Kana by Coffee Mechanics, Araku and Subko. As the city looks ahead to 2026, Bengaluru enters the new year with clarity, confidence and a strong sense of its own culinary voice, shaped by originality, depth and an increasingly discerning dining public.

Ten-year-old border village boy honoured for helping soldiers during Operation Sindoor
CHANDIGARH: Ten-year-old Shravan Singh from Tara Wali village in Mamdot block is located along the Indo-Pak international border in Punjabs Ferozepur district. He was honoured with the Pradhan Mantri Bal Puraskar 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday for his extraordinary courage, compassion and patriotism. The award, the countrys highest civilian honour for children, was conferred on Veer Bal Diwas. Shravan had served water, lassi, milk and tea to Army jawans during Operation Sindoor as swarms of drones entered Indian territory from across the border. His actions, carried out amid heightened tensions, drew widespread appreciation from the Army and the local community. After receiving the award, Shravan, a Class IV student, said he loved helping the soldiers and used to serve them cold water and milk every day. They gave me a special gift, shared meals with me, and even treated me to ice cream. I want to become a soldier and serve the nation when I grow up. I have even bought new clothes for the function, he said. Shravans father, Sona Singh, said jawans had camped in their fields during Operation Sindoor. From the very first day, my son insisted on serving soldiers as he found joy in serving them. He kept taking refreshments to them and enjoyed being in their company. Seeing him bring refreshments and comfort to them made our family proud. He now dreams of joining the Army one day. He never imagined that his younger son would be given such an honour, he said. Shravans mother, Santosh Rani, thanked the Army for recommending her sons name for the award. He dreams of becoming a soldier one day. The jawans became his friends, she said.
