Kashmir mutton dealers call off strike after Punjab Govt intervention

Srinagar, Jul 3:Bringing an end to a week-long disruption in the Valleys meat supply chain, the Kashmir Mutton Dealers Association (KMDA) on Friday called off its strike after the Punjab government assured that livestock vehicles carrying sheep to Jammu and Kashmir would no longer be stopped at checkpoints. The decision is expected to restore normal supplies of mutton across Kashmir ahead of the peak wedding season, when demand remains at its highest. The strike had brought the transportation of sheep from Punjab and other northern states to a near standstill, triggering concerns among traders and consumers over a possible shortage of mutton and a sharp rise in prices. Kashmir depends heavily on livestock imported from outside the Union Territory, making uninterrupted movement of livestock essential for maintaining regular supplies. Announcing the withdrawal of the strike, KMDA General Secretary Mehraj-ud-Din said the association had received assurances that the Punjab government had directed its police not to obstruct livestock vehicles and had also instructed livestock mandis to resume normal trade. The strike has been called off. We have been informed that the Punjab Police has been directed not to stop our vehicles at checkpoints. The livestock mandis have also been asked to resume supplies, he said. Mehraj-ud-Din, however, said the association would continue to monitor the situation closely and was awaiting formal written orders from the Punjab government before treating the issue as fully resolved. We are now waiting for the formal orders. After that, we will see how things move on the ground and whether the directions are implemented in letter and spirit, he said. Expressing optimism, he said the movement of livestock into Jammu and Kashmir was expected to normalize over the next few days if the directions issued by the Punjab government were implemented without any hindrance. The protest had been launched after livestock dealers alleged that sheep-laden vehicles entering or passing through Punjab were being stopped at various checkpoints and subjected to unauthorized collections despite carrying valid documents. The dealers maintained that livestock transportation is exempt from GST and argued that the alleged levy had significantly increased transportation costs, making the trade economically unviable. The issue soon escalated into a major concern for the Valleys meat trade, with wholesalers warning that continued disruption in livestock imports could severely impact supplies during the ongoing marriage season. Retailers had also expressed concern over depleting stocks as fresh consignments failed to arrive. President of the Mutton Retailers Association Kashmir, Khazir Mohammad Rigoo, said the dispute had been resolved after the Punjab authorities revoked the alleged levy imposed on Kashmiri livestock traders. Rigoo thanked the media, political leaders, trade bodies and members of the coordination committee for extending support to the traders during the agitation. He said fresh supplies had already started moving towards Kashmir and assured consumers that mutton would continue to be sold at the government-approved retail price of Rs 740 per kilogram. There will be no shortage of mutton during the ongoing wedding season. Supplies have resumed and consumers will get mutton at the prescribed rate, Rigoo said. The issue had also prompted intervention at the highest level of the Jammu and Kashmir government. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had taken up the matter with his Punjab counterpart, Bhagwant Mann, describing the reported action against Jammu and Kashmirs livestock traders as unjustified and seeking immediate intervention to ensure the unhindered movement of livestock vehicles. The Chief Minister had also urged the Punjab government to look into the complaints of unauthorised collections from livestock transporters and ensure that legitimate trade was not disrupted. His intervention came after trader bodies warned that the prolonged impasse could adversely affect both consumers and thousands of families dependent on the livestock trade. The breakthrough has been welcomed by traders across Kashmir, who believe the withdrawal of the strike will restore confidence in the supply chain and stabilize the wholesale and retail meat markets. Fresh consignments of sheep are expected to start reaching the Valley over the coming days, easing concerns over availability during one of the busiest periods for meat consumption.

Never knew Kashmir was so beautiful: First-time Yatris

Praise Valleys hospitality, beauty, spirit of brotherhood Srinagar, Jul 02: Yatri Niwas Pantha Chowk in Srinagar came alive with chants of Bam Bam Bhole, prayers and emotional scenes on Thursday as hundreds of first-time Shri Amarnath Yatra pilgrims arrived in the Valley, many of them overwhelmed by Kashmirs breathtaking beauty and warm hospitality. From elderly devotees to youngsters, the atmosphere at the Yatri Niwas reflected a unique blend of spirituality, excitement and relief as pilgrims prepared to proceed towards the holy cave shrine through the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. For many first-time yatris, the journeyturned intofar more than a religious pilgrimage. Alongside faith and devotion, pilgrims said they were deeply touched by the kindness, compassion and brotherhood shown by the people of Kashmir. We never knew Kashmir was so beautiful and peaceful, said Meena Sharma, a pilgrim from Delhi, while admiring the mist-covered mountains surrounding the city. We had heard many things before coming here, but after arriving, all our fears disappeared. The people here welcomed us warmly and guided us at every step. We are taking back beautiful memories from Kashmir. The arrival of pilgrims filled the Yatri Niwas with energy and devotion as volunteers, officials and security personnel assisted devotees with directions, registration and accommodation. Pushpa Devi, a first-time yatri from Madhya Pradesh, said the Valleys natural beauty and hospitality made the spiritual journey even more memorable. The mountains, cool breeze and peaceful atmosphere make this place feel heavenly, she said. But what touched us most was the behaviour of the people. Shopkeepers, volunteers and even strangers were helping pilgrims selflessly. We feel respected and cared for here. Several women pilgrims said they felt safe and comfortable during their stay in Kashmir and appreciated the support extended by locals and security personnel. As women travellers, safety is always a concern during long journeys, but here we felt completely comfortable, said Rekha Joshi, who arrived with a group from Gujarat. Locals offered us water, directions and help whenever needed. The police and volunteers are guiding everyone patiently. Another woman pilgrim from Maharashtra said the atmosphere in Kashmir had changed her perception of the Valley. We used to see Kashmir only in photographs and on television, but seeing it in person is a completely different feeling, she said. The greenery, rivers and mountains are mesmerising, and the warmth of people makes the experience even more special. Elderly yatris, too, shared emotional accounts of the assistance they received from residents and volunteers. At this age, travelling and climbing are not easy, said 70-year-old Om Prakash from Haryana. But young boys here helped elderly pilgrims with luggage and guided us patiently. Their humanity and respect touched my heart. Another elderly pilgrim from Rajasthan, Shanti Lal Sharma, said his perception of Kashmir had changed completely after visiting the Valley. We came here with devotion for Baba Amarnath, but we are also taking back love and affection from Kashmir, he said. People here welcomed us like family members. This journey will remain in our hearts forever. Pilgrims also praised the administration, Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies for maintaining smooth arrangements and ensuring a secure atmosphere. The arrangements are excellent, said Rajesh Tiwari from Uttar Pradesh. From Jammu to Srinagar, everything has been systematic. Security personnel are present everywhere and are helping devotees with patience and humility. However, many pilgrims urged authorities to simplify the registration process and increase the number of registration counters, particularly for senior citizens and first-time visitors unfamiliar with procedures. Registration should be easier and quicker, said a group of pilgrims from Punjab. Long queues become exhausting, especially for elderly people and women travelling with families. More counters and help desks would make the experience smoother. Some yatris also demanded separate assistance facilities for women and elderly devotees at registration and transit points. Despite minor inconveniences, pilgrims said the warmth of Kashmirs people and the spiritual atmosphere overshadowed every hardship. For us, this is no longer just a pilgrimage, said one elderly devotee while preparing for the onward journey. It has become a lesson in humanity, brotherhood and peace. The majority of the pilgrims urged the LG Manoj Sinha-led administration to set up additional registration counters so that every pilgrim can undertake a hassle-free journey. There should be more counters for registration, andcompletion offormalities should be donein a very speedy manner. After performing darshan at the holy cave shrine, we would like to visit tourist places and take a shikara ride in Dal Lake as well, a group of enthusiastic pilgrims said.

NC Govt has let Kashmir's Rs 4,000 Cr mutton economy crumble: Khurshid Alam

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) General Secretary Mohammad Khurshid Alam on Tuesday strongly criticised the National Conference-led government over the ongoing mutton supply crisis, calling it a glaring administrative failure that has disrupted one of Kashmir's largest industries and pushed traders and consumers into distress. Alam said it was deeply unfortunate that the crisis had escalated to the point where meat dealers were forced to appeal to the public to scale down marriage functions due to an acute shortage of mutton, describing it as an unprecedented situation for the Valley, as per a press release. He said the crisis originated from an alleged extortion racket in Punjab, where contractors and individuals at checkpoints have been demanding a 4 percent gunda tax of Rs 15,000 to Rs 25.

Unauthorised Transportation Levy : Mutton crisis deepens in Kashmir, wedding season hit

Delegation camps in Punjab to resolve supply issue Dealers urge CM Omar to move beyond issuing letters Srinagar, Jul 01: The ongoing mutton crisis in Kashmir has taken a heavy toll on weddings, with the supply chain remaining at a halt for nine straight days due to the illegal and unauthorised transportation levy imposed in Punjab, as an eight-member delegation from Kashmir camps in Punjab to end the impasse. The six-month period from May to October is considered the wedding season in Kashmir, famous for Wazwan delicacies. However, the present situation has left mutton-consuming families facing a massive shortage, with hundreds of families scheduled to hold wedding ceremonies in the coming weeks left in a lurch. In this regard, an eight-member delegationone from each of the five Mandis across Kashmir and Presidents from three associationsis presently camped in Punjab for the last couple of days, holding back-to-back meetings to seek an end to what they termed as unnecessary harassment. General Secretary of the Mutton Dealers Association, Mehraj-ud-din Ganaie, told Rising Kashmir that they have had meetings with many officials in Punjab for the last couple of days and are now meeting the concerned Minister in the state to seek intervention. We have been managing to meet the officials and Ministers here in Punjab on our own as there is least response from the government back in Jammu and Kashmir in this regard, he added. Ganaie alleged that besides writing a letter to the Chief Minister of Punjab, the government in J&K has not done anything favourable. There is no support from the government side. The government neither approached us nor did they receive our phone calls despite making frequent attempts to speak to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as well as the Minister concerned, he said, adding that the Omar Abdullah-led government must move beyond issuing letters. Families scheduled to host guests on wedding ceremonies expressed resentment over the prevailing mutton crisis, saying that the issue must be resolved forthwith. It is not just one family or two, but hundreds of families across the Valley are scheduled to hold wedding ceremonies in the coming weeks or months, but the ongoing situation has completely left hundreds of families to lurch at large. In such a scenario, the government should brace up and ensure the issue is resolved forthwith, the families said.

Day 09: Mutton Supply Crisis Deepens in Kashmir; Dealers Label Punjab Tax as 'Gunda Tax', Urge Families to Postpone Weddings

Srinagar, July 1:The mutton supply crisis in Kashmir deepened on Wednesday as it entered Day 9, with dealers terming the 4% tax imposed by Punjab authorities as a gunda tax and urging families to postpone weddings. Khazir Mohammad Regoo, president of the All Kashmir Wholesale and Retail Mutton Dealers Association, told GNS that dealers held a meeting with concerned authorities in Punjab on Sunday. Its a gunda tax. We already pay tax in Delhi when purchasing mutton. This extra 4 percent burden is unjustified and has choked supply lines to Kashmir, Regoo said. He further said that a meeting with the Punjab CM is likely in the coming days. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already taken up the issue with his Punjab counterpart, seeking immediate relief for mutton dealers and removal of the additional levy, officials confirmed. The CMs intervention comes amid mounting public anger over soaring prices and supply disruptions ahead of the wedding season. The additional tax has disrupted supply chains, leading to acute shortages and a sharp spike in mutton prices across the Valley. With hundreds of weddings scheduled in the coming weeks, dealers have appealed to families to postpone functions until the issue is resolved. The association has reiterated its demand for urgent administrative intervention to restore normal supply and prevent further escalation of prices.(GNS)

4 Jammu players win bronze at North Zone Soft Tennis Championship

Jammu, Jun 30:Four young players from the Khelo India Soft Tennis Centre at MA Stadium, Jammu, have brought fresh pride to Jammu and Kashmir by clinching the bronze medal at the 3rd North Zone National Soft Tennis Championship held at Gindun Stadium, Srinagar, from June 26 to June 28, 2026. Madhavendra Singh Sambyal, Harikesh Dutt Sharma, Aditya Dutt Sharma and Vihan Parihar competed with the discipline and tactical sharpness of seasoned professionals, earning their place on the podium against some of the strongest teams from across North India. The quartet trains, as per an official statement, under Khelo India mentor and international soft tennis player Indu Bhushan Padha, whose coaching has been widely credited for Jammus decade-long dominance in the sport at the Union Territory level. On the Srinagar courts, that training was evident in every rally, as the team combined composed doubles coordination with aggressive net play and smart point construction that belied their age. Their performance was not just a win for J&K but a clear signal that the structured, grassroots system being built through Khelo India Centres is producing athletes ready for the national stage. At the heart of this team is 17-year-old Madhvendra Singh Sambyal, already one of the most decorated young names in Indian soft tennis. His record reads like a blueprint for the aspiring athletes Madhvendra, at just 17, stormed to the Under-17 final at the National School Games in Dewas, MP, settling for silver after an intense title clash. His composure against the countrys best put J&K on the national soft tennis map. That silver came close on the heels of his silver at the Senior National Championships in Srinagar, a rare feat for a school-level player competing with the adults. Hes the reigning state gold medallist and top seed for J&K and previously won gold in the senior category mens singles at the 9th UT Level Championship. Alongside his sister Sidhani Singh, Madhvendra has earned selection to represent India at the 2nd Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championship, Feb 38, 2026, in Punjab. His athleticism isnt limited to soft tennis. In September 2025, the DPS Jammu student won gold in the Under-16 Boys Singles Pickleball Championship and qualified for Nationals in Bengaluru. Madhvendra credits his growth to his coaches, the Soft Tennis Association, the J&K Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports. Today, hes become an inspiration for a new generation of young athletes in Jammu and Kashmir to dream big and compete fearlessly. HarikeshDutt Sharma has been on Jammus radar since his sub-junior sweep at the 9th UT Championship, where he and Svadhi Sharma swept all three events, singles, doubles and mixed doubles. He also reached the U/17 Boys' final at the Inter District UT Level meet, facing teammate Madhvendra. Aditya Dutt Sharma and Vihan Parihar round out a squad where every player is battle-tested at district, UT and now zonal levels. Their bronze is not a finish line, but its a foundation. Jammus clean sweep of 25 gold medals at the 9th UT Level Championship proved the regions depth. This North Zone bronze proves its breadth that J&K talent can travel, compete and medal beyond the UT. With this bronze, the team has laid a foundation that goes beyond a single tournament. They return now to MA Stadium to prepare for the national circuit, with Madhvendra setting his sights on the upcoming national and international championships this year.

Rs 14-crore daily livestock trade disrupted, Wazwan under stress

Srinagar, Jun 30:As the wedding season reaches its peak in Kashmir, a disruption in the supply of mutton has laid bare one of Jammu and Kashmir's biggest food security challenges - its heavy dependence on livestock imported from outside J&K. The immediate trigger is a dispute over alleged illegal charges imposed on livestock carriers passing through Punjab. However, the crisis has also highlighted the structural gap between Kashmir's appetite for mutton and its limited domestic production. Wholesale mutton dealers have suspended fresh imports of live sheep and goats after alleging that transporters are being forced to pay between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 per truck while crossing Punjab. General Secretary of the Wholesale Mutton Dealers Union, Mehraj Ganie, said traders have been compelled to halt supplies despite the ongoing marriage season. We have stopped importing livestock for the last few days. Whatever stock was available within Kashmir has almost been exhausted. Marriage functions are getting affected, but we have no option. Trucks carrying livestock are being charged Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 while passing through Punjab. These charges are illegal and have made transportation unviable, Ganie told Greater Kashmir. According to the union, Kashmir imports nearly 70 truckloads of livestock every day during the peak marriage season. Each truck carries sheep worth around Rs 20 lakh, taking the total value of daily livestock imports to nearly Rs 14 crore during this period. Most of these consignments originate from Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh before entering Jammu and Kashmir through Punjab. Any disruption along this route immediately affects wholesale markets, retailers and consumers across Kashmir. The issue has now reached the highest political level. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has written to the Punjab Government seeking immediate intervention to ensure the smooth movement of livestock transport vehicles through the state. In his letter, the Chief Minister urged Punjab authorities to prevent unauthorised levies and facilitate unhindered movement of livestock carriers, warning that the disruption could adversely affect traders as well as consumers in Jammu and Kashmir. While the current dispute revolves around transportation, it has once again exposed a long-standing weakness in J&K's livestock economy. J&K has consistently failed to produce enough mutton to meet local demand. Available government figures and industry estimates show that J&K produces around 30,000 to 32,000 tonnes of mutton annually, whereas consumption is estimated at 51,000 to 60,000 tonnes every year. This leaves a deficit of nearly 21,000 to 30,000 tonnes. In simple terms, local production meets only about half of the Valley's annual requirement, forcing J&K to depend on imports for roughly 40 to 50 percent of its mutton consumption. Official estimates released over the years present a remarkably consistent picture. Earlier figures showed annual consumption at around 51,000 tonnes against local production of 30,000 tonnes, requiring imports of nearly 21,000 tonnes. More recent estimates indicate that consumption has climbed to nearly 60,000 tonnes while production has remained almost stagnant at around 30,000 tonnes, widening the supply gap further. The shortfall is bridged through the import of live sheep and goats rather than processed meat. Industry estimates indicate that Jammu and Kashmir imports nearly 14 lakh sheep and goats every year. These animals are transported by road, slaughtered within J&K and supplied through local wholesale and retail markets. The annual value of these imports is estimated at around Rs 1400 crore, making mutton one of the largest food commodities imported into J&K. Economists say this also represents a significant outflow of wealth, as hundreds of crores of rupees leave J&K every year to purchase livestock from other states instead of circulating within the local rural economy. Ironically, J&K has one of India's strongest sheep-rearing traditions. J&K accounts for nearly 4.2 percent of the country's sheep population and ranks among the leading sheep-rearing regions. Annual mutton production stands at around 320 lakh kg, equivalent to approximately 32,000 tonnes. However, experts attribute the production deficit to low productivity, dependence on traditional breeds, slower genetic improvement and limited adoption of modern breeding technologies. While natural grazing resources are abundant, meat yield per animal has remained comparatively low. Research studies suggest that dependence on imported livestock is not a recent phenomenon. Academic analyses have shown that imports of sheep and goats have steadily increased since the early 2000s as local production failed to keep pace with rising consumption. The demand for mutton in Kashmir also differs from most other parts of the country.
