'MP detained under NSA an emergency': Channi's reference to Amritpal Singh triggers row in LS

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi said Thursday that the detention of an elected MP under the NSA was part of an undeclared emergency by the Centre, drawing a sharp response from the BJP who said he was referring to jailed radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh. During a debate in Lok Sabha, the former Punjab chief minister referred to the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections and said, This is also an emergency that a Member of Parliament elected by 20 lakh people in Punjab has been detained under the NSA (National Security Act) ...He is unable to speak about his constituency here (in Parliament). This is also an emergency. While Channi did not name anyone, BJP leaders said he was speaking about Amritpal Singh. Singh won the Khadoor Sahib constituency by a margin of around 2 lakh votes in this year's Lok Sabha polls. Radical preacher Amritpal Singh and son of Indira Gandhi's assassin win LS polls as Independents In a post on X, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the Congress must answer whether the party was in support of the idea of Khalistan that led to the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984. Batting for separatist who wants tukde tukde of India? Rahul ji must answer - the idea of Khalistan that caused the assassination of PM Indira ji is being hailed !! Why does Congress always bat for separatists and terrorists? Yakub, Afzal, 26/11 jihadis, now K terrorists? he said. Union minister Giriraj Singh said Congress MP Channi's remarks made inside Parliament were unfortunate. The Khalistani who assassinated Indira Gandhi has received open support from Channi today, which means the Congress is siding with the Khalistanis. This is an attack on the integrity of India...what can I say, I will say action should be taken, he told PTI videos. BJP MP Dinesh Sharma demanded the expulsion of Channi by Congress. Today, Channi, who doesn't even have the status of a 'chavanni' (a quarter-rupee coin), is speaking in support of terrorists and glorifying them. He is working at the behest of anti-national elements from Canada, he told PTI Videos. The Congress should expel him, and if Congress doesn't take action against him, it means that somewhere Congress is in cahoots with these anti-social and anti-national elements, he said. Channi blamed the central government for an undeclared emergency in the country even as a heated exchange with BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu during a debate in the Lok Sabha led to a brief adjournment in the proceedings. During a debate on the Union Budget in the Lower House, Channi also held the BJP government responsible for farmers being termed Khalistanis. He added that his home state Punjab was ignored in this year's budget. Channi said, It's not a budget to save the country, it's just to save their government. They haven't addressed the floods in Punjab, haven't raised wages, and have ignored Punjab in this budget.Jalandhar was declared a smart city, but it still has dirty water and a significant drug problem. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for 30 minutes amid a verbal spat between the former Punjab chief minister and the Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu over certain personal remarks till 2 pm. Channi referred to the assassination of Bittu's grandfather, former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. This led to a war of words between Bittu, who recently quit the Congress to join the BJP, and Channi. Bittu countered by making certain personal remarks against Channi and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, triggering an uproar. In a heated exchange, Channi told Bittu, Your grandfather became a martyr, the day you left Congress. To which, the BJP leader retorted, My grandfather sacrificed for the country, not for Congress. He also called Channi he most corrupt person in Punjab. During his address to the Lok Sabha, Channi accused the government of creating conditions similar to an emergency. He listed the lack of progress in the Sidhu Moosewala case, action against opposition leaders by central agencies, and alleged mistreatment of farmers, women athletes, and journalists as evidence of this. The Congress leader also pointed to the long-standing unrest in Manipur and the Hathras gang rape case, in which he said the victim's cremation was rushed. The country is facing an undeclared emergency and the BJP is responsible, Channi said. Farmers are called Khalistani when they make demands, which aren't fulfilled. This is also an emergency, he added. The central government, he said, has exhausted its ideas and sincerity after ten years in power, pointing to the absence of the prime minister and the finance minister during such an important discussion. Their seats are empty. They need to explain the budget, but no one is here. This is your sincerity? he asked. Channi said, I come from a poor family and got my education thanks to the Congress government. The BJP's worst move in 2014 was cutting scholarships for minorities and Dalit children. Slamming the depreciation of the rupee, Channi claimed, The dollar's value increased by Rs 25 in ten years, whereas during (ex-PM) Manmohan Singh's time, it only increased by Rs 13 in ten years. Sometimes, it feels like there's a competition between the rupee and the government to see which falls faster. The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice in the post-lunch period as a war of words broke out between the treasury and opposition benches, triggered by Channi's spat with Bittu.

After LS defeat, Punjab CM Mann manages to snatch Jalandhar west match

CHANDIGARH: The ruling AAPs victory in the Jalandhar (West) assembly by-election has come as a shot in the arm for Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann after the partys poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls. AAPs Mohinder Bhagat won from the SC-reserved seat by a margin of 37,325 votes defeating BJPs Sheetal Angural, who had resigned as the AAP legislator on March 28, a day after joining the saffron party. Bhagat got 55,246 votes and Angural 17,921. Surinder Kaur of Congress came third with 16,757 votes, followed by Surjeet Kaur of SAD with 1,242 votes. The bypolls for Maniktala, Bagdah, Ranaghat Dakshin, and Raiganj assembly seats were held on July 10. However, there was no official word from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal, as the EC website showed counting in progress. Bengali news channel TV9 Bangla showed TMC leading in Maniktala in Kolkata, Ranaghat Dakshin, and Bagdah in North 24 Parganas, which are in South Bengal, and Raiganj in North Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district. Another news channel, ABP Ananda, also broadcasted similar trends. The BJP secured Ranaghat Dakshin and Bagdah seats in the 2021 assembly polls. The Maniktala seat was secured by the TMC in 2021 but became vacant after former state minister Sadhan Pandey died in February 2022. Uttarakhand: Congress leading in Manglaur, Badrinath seats DEHRADUN: The Congress' candidates for the Badrinath and Manglaur bypolls in Uttarakhand were leading in both seats on Saturday, according to initial trends. The counting of votes for the by-elections in Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh, held on Wednesday, began at 8 am. In the Hamirpur assembly seat, Congress' Pushpinder Verma was ahead by 1,704 votes against BJP candidate Ashish Sharma after the second round of counting, they said. Congress candidate Hardeep Singh Baba was leading by 646 votes in the first round against BJP candidate K L Thakur in the Nalagarh assembly seat, the officials. Thirteen candidates were in the fray from the three seats. The Nalagarh assembly constituency had recorded the highest polling at 79.04 per cent, followed by Hamirpur (67.72 per cent) and Dehra (65.42 per cent). The overall voting percentage of the three bypolls was 71 per cent, according to the data of the state election department. The seats fell vacant after the three Independent legislators Singh (Dehra), Sharma (Hamirpur) and K L Thakur (Nalagarh), who had voted in favour of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls held on February 27, resigned from the state assembly on March 22 and joined the party the next day. Their resignations, however, were accepted by the assembly speaker on June 3, and the seats were declared vacant, necessitating the by-elections. The BJP fielded all the three former MLAs from their respective seats. The Congress fielded Thakur from Dehra, repeated its candidate Verma from Hamirpur and gave ticket to five-time Indian National Trade Union Congress president, Himachal Pradesh unit, Hardeep Singh, from Nalagarh. Though the bypolls will not make much difference in the 68-member House as the Congress has a majority with 38 MLAs. The BJP has 27 members. Tamil Nadu: DMK takes early lead in Vikravandi VIKRAVANDI: The DMK on Saturday took early lead in the Vikravandi Assembly constituency, where the counting of votes polled in the July 10 bypoll was underway. According to reports, DMK nominee Anniyur Siva was leading ahead of his nearest PMK rival, C Anbumani, by about 5,000 votes. Counting of votes began at 8 am with postal ballots being taken up first. The by-election was necessitated due to the death of DMK legislator N Pugazhenthi in April this year. The DMK-led alliance had won all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone Puducherry segment in the just concluded Parliamentary elections. Punjab: AAP candidate Bhagat leading from Jalandhar West seat CHANDIGARH: AAP candidate for the Jalandhar West assembly bypoll Mohinder Bhagat was leading against his nearest rival and Congress nominee Surinder Kaur, according to initial trends. Bhagat was ahead of Kaur by 6,336 votes after two rounds of counting of votes that began at 8 am at the Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women here. BJP candidate Sheetal Angural was at the third spot, according to the trends. The bypoll was necessitated after the seat fell vacant following the resignation of Angural as the AAP legislator. He joined the BJP in March. Polling in the seat took place on Wednesday and a voter turnout of 54.98 per cent was recorded, a sharp drop from the 67 per cent the assembly segment saw in the 2022 state elections. Bihar: JD(U) candidate leading in Rupuli bypoll PURNEA: JD(U)'s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal was leading by 2,433 votes over his nearest rival, an independent candidate, in the by-election to the Rupauli Assembly seat in Bihar's Purnea district on Saturday, according to the election commission of India. After the first round of counting, the JD(U) candidate secured 6,588 votes, while independent candidate Shankar Singh got 4,155 votes, according to the latest information uploaded on the Election Commission's website. RJD's Bima Bharti is in the third position by securing 2,359 votes after the conclusion of the first round of counting. The counting of votes commenced at 8 am. The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA Bima Bharti, who had won the seat for JD(U) several times but quit the party recently to contest the Lok Sabha election on an RJD ticket. Following her loss in the parliamentary election, she contested the bypoll as an RJD candidate. Madhya Pradesh: Counting of votes begins for Amarwara assembly bypoll CHHINDWARA (MP): Counting of votes for the Amarwara bypoll in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh began on Saturday amid tight security arrangements, a poll official said. The counting of votes commenced at 8 am at the Government PG College Bhawan and is going on peacefully, the official said. After the third round, Kamlesh Pratap Shah of the BJP was leading by 4,160 votes over Congress' Dheeran Shah Invati, he said. A turnout of 78.71 per cent was recorded in the bye election for the Scheduled Tribe-reserved constituency on Wednesday. The fate of the nine candidates, including those from the BJP, Congress and Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), will be decided in the 20 rounds of counting. According to officials, a three-tier security system is in place at the counting venue. The turnout in the constituency dropped by 10 per cent compared to the 2023 assembly election, when it recorded 88.63 per cent polling. The bypoll to this ST-reserved seat in Chhindwara district is prestigious for both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress, as Chhindwara was considered a stronghold of senior Congress leader Kamal Nath until recently. Congress won the Amarwara seat in the 2023 assembly elections, but the BJP's Vivek Bunty Sahu won the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat this time by defeating Nath's son Nakul Nath. The assembly by-election became necessary after three-time Congress MLA Kamlesh Shah crossed over to the BJP in March this year. He then contested in the bypoll as a BJP candidate. Nine candidates are in the fray, but the main contest is between Kamlesh Shah and Dheeran Shah Invati and GGP nominee Devraman Bhalavi.

A case under provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered in the matter, he added. During patrolling, a suspicious car with dark panes and a mesh was found parked on one side of the national highway in Phillaur, he said. Another person in the car was identified as Harpreet Singh alias Happy, son of Tarsem Singh, Jallupur Khera, Amritsar district, the SSP said. The car was searched in the presence of a DSP and methamphetamine drug weighing 4 grams was recovered. A lighter, silver foil and some other articles were also recovered, Gupta said. He said that the duo had bought the drug from a man identified as Sandeep Arora from Ludhiana. They had even made a payment of Rs 10,000 digitally to him and procured the drug from him, the SSP said. When the police caught the duo, they were preparing to consume the drug, Gupta said, adding that their dope test was positive. Another police official said that during the checking of the car, a small polythene was recovered from Harpreet Singh and the drug kept inside was seized. From Lovepreet Singh, two lighters, a silver foil paper and a pipe for consuming the drug were recovered, the official said. Harpreet Singh is aged between 30-35 and was into some dispatching work in transport, he said. Both him and Lovepreet Singh hail from Amritsar, the official added. Meanwhile, reacting to his son's arrest, Harpreet Singh's father Tarsem Singh alleged that it was a ig conspiracy to defame our family. We have been raising our voice against drug menace and it could be a trap, a conspiracy to defame our family, Tarsem Singh said in Amritsar. He claimed that Harpreet Singh left home at around 1 pm on Thursday and was alone at that time. After a few hours, when we tried to contact him, his phone was switched off, Tarsem Singh said. We don't know how he reached the Jalandhar area, he added. Tarsem Singh said that they did not get any information about Harpreet Singh's arrest from the government or the police and learnt about it from the media. Harpreet Singh's brother Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in a prison in Assam's Dibrugarh district for offences under the National Security Act (NSA). Having fought the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent, Amritpal Singh won from the Khadoor Sahib seat defeating Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira. Amritpal Singh, who heads the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit and has styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was jailed along with nine of his associates under the NSA. He was arrested in Moga's Rode village after he and his supporters on February 23 last year barged into the Ajnala police station breaking barricades, brandishing swords and guns, and clashed with police personnel in an attempt to free one of his aides from custody.

Brother of pro-Khalistan MP Amritpal Singh arrested under NDPS Act for possession of drugs

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab police have arrested Harpreet Singh, the brother of pro-Khalistan MP Amritpal Singh, and another person under the NDPS Act on drug-related charges after methamphetamine also known as crystal meth was recovered from them. Sources said Harpreet Singh and Lovepreet Singh were arrested from the Phillaur check post as they were travelling on the Phillaur-Amritsar highway after four to five grams of methamphetamine was recovered from them. Both were sent for a medical examination late in the night and they tested positive for the drug. Another person Sandeep Arora of Hebowal in Ludhiana district has also been booked in the case. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered at Phillaur police station. Sources said that during the search, a half-burnt Rs 20 note was recovered from the pocket of Harpreets shirt which was rolled into a pipe, while 4 grams of meth was recovered from another pocket. A digital weighing scale was also recovered from their possession. In a purse kept by the drivers seat, a silver paper (used to inhale drugs) and lighters were seized. Harpreet also faces charges in previous cases. He had been arrested in a case concerning seizure of weapons from Shahkot last year, along with his aides, following the crackdown on Amritpal. Confirming the development, Senior Superintendent of Police of Jalandhar (Rural) Ankur Gupta said that a suspicious car with tinted glasses was parked on the side of the national highway in Phillaur. He said police found 4 gm of meth with the duo who were identified as Harpreet Singh and Lovepreet Singh. When they were questioned, they disclosed that they bought the drugs from Sandeep Arora in Ludhiana for which payment was made through Paytm, he said. Gupta said that they had bought the drugs for their consumption and were going to Amritsar from Ludhiana when they were arrested. Amritpal's father Tarsem Singh alleged that the arrest was an attempt to defame his family. It is part of a larger conspiracy to defame the family which is fighting against the drug menace, so it is troubling the government. They have failed to nail the big fish in the illegal drug trade. They are working under the influence of drug cartels. The government and police have all the means to defame anyone and anytime they want to, he alleged. Interestingly before Amritpal was arrested on charges of National Security Act (NSA), he had initiated an anti-drug campaign, including opening a de-addiction center in his village. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, Amritpal had won with the highest margin in Punjab. Originally from Jallupur Khera village in Amritsar, he had lived in Dubai before returning to Punjab in 2022 after the death of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu who was running the organization 'Waris Punjab De. Amritpal now heads the group.

Bypolls: Vikravandi in TN records highest 82% turnout, violence in Uttarakhand & Bengal

NEW DELHI: Amid sporadic incidents of violence in Uttarakhand and West Bengal, the bypolls to 13 constituencies across seven states recorded moderate to brisk polling on Wednesday. The bypolls are said to be a litmus test for both the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc coming close after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in which the BJP failed to secure a majority on its own. In West Bengal, violence was reported in Bagdah and Ranaghat Dakshin assembly segments as the BJP accused TMC activists of assaulting its booth agents and stopping its candidates from visiting some polling stations. BJP candidates Manoj Kumar Biswas and Binay Kumar Biswas claimed they were not allowed to visit some booths. Manoj Kumar Biswas alleged that BJP camp offices in some areas were ransacked by the TMC. Out of the four seats, election to three seats in West Bengal was necessitated after the BJP MLAs jumped ship to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The BJP has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against alleged violent incidents, though the TMC dubbed them baseless. In Uttarakhands Manglaur constituency, four people were injured in a clash between rival parties at a polling booth. Though there were reports of firing at a booth, police denied the reports. Several Congress leaders, including former chief minister Harish Rawat, and Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood condemned the violence. While Manglaur recorded 67.28% till 5 pm, Badrinath reported 47.68% polling. In the high stake contest in Himachal Pradesh, the Nalagarh assembly constituency recorded the highest polling percentage of 75.22 till 5 pm, followed by Hamirpur at 65.78 and Dehra at 63.89. In Dehra, Congress Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is pitted against the BJPs Hoshiyar Singh. The three seats fell vacant after as many independent MLAs switched over to the BJP. The Vikravandi assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu recorded the highest voter turnout of 82.48%, according to the Election Commission. In the triangular contest in Vikravandi, the ruling DMK is pitted against PMK and NTK. In Punjab, the bypoll to the Jalandhar West assembly segment saw a voter turnout of 51.30%. In Bihar, a voter turnout of 51.14% was recorded till 5 pm in the bypoll to Rupauli Assembly seat.

In light of this, a meeting has been convened today to discuss the election strategy. Pargat Singh, a senior Congress leader, expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the potential appointment of Ravneet Bittu as a Cabinet Minister. Singh emphasized that leaders who have switched parties during previous elections have started to be rejected by the public. He stressed the need for significant improvements within the party and stated that today's meeting would address these issues. Singh advocated for fielding only honest and upright candidates in the election. He also highlighted the urgent need to address various issues such as drug abuse and illegal gambling. With the reimplementation of the Model Code of Conduct, Singh urged the public to avoid engaging with leaders who have defected to other parties. Regarding the controversy involving actress Kangana Ranaut, Singh advised political leaders to speak thoughtfully. He criticized the endorsement of Chief Minister Mann's statements by BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia, suggesting that only wise individuals agree with such views. Singh cautioned that inflammatory comments like those from Ranaut could deteriorate the state's atmosphere. On the recent terrorist attack on a bus in Jammu, Singh mentioned that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting an investigation. He also criticized the BJP, stating that the party's outlook does not align with Punjab's interests. Addressing Ravneet Bittu, Singh remarked that appointing a leader who does not speak for Punjab's interests as a Cabinet Minister is detrimental to the state. He also condemned Shital Angural's recent outburst on social media, asserting that individuals with such behaviour should not be in politics. The Congress meeting today aims to address these concerns and strategize for the upcoming by-election. (ANI)

Jailed radical preacher Amritpal Singh to seek temporary release for taking oath

CHANDIGARH: Jailed radical Sikh preacher and MP-elect Amritpal Singh will write to the Punjab government, seeking a temporary release from the detention in a jail in Assam to take oath as the member of parliament, his counsel Imaan Singh Khara said on Sunday. In a day or so, he will write to seek temporary release under Section 15 of the National Security Act that deals with the temporary release from detention, he said. Amritpal, the chief of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit, is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail along with nine associates under the NSA. Having fought the 2024 Lok Sabha electoral battle as an Independent, he won from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat after he defeated Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira. Amritpal won by a margin of 1,97,120 votes. He polled 4,04,430 while Zira got 2,07,310. His parents Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur arrived in Assam on Saturday to meet him. Amritpal, who styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was arrested in Moga's Rode village on April 23 last year following an over a month-long manhunt. The Khalistan sympathiser had escaped the police net in Jalandhar district on March 18, switching vehicles and changing appearances. The Punjab Police had launched the crackdown after the February 23 Ajnala incident last year in which Amritpal and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into the police station on the outskirts of Amritsar city, and clashed with police for the release of Lovepreet Singh Toofan, one of his aides. He and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

Jammu and Kashmir Election 2024: Live Updates and Key Highlights

Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing significant developments in the 2024 election, with several key figures and parties making headlines. Here are the latest updates: Jailed leader Abdul Rashid Sheikh, also known as Engineer Rashid, has emerged as a strong contender against former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla constituency. Mr. Abdullah congratulated Mr. Sheikh even before the official results were announced, acknowledging the momentum behind his rival's campaign. In the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti has conceded defeat to NCs Mian Altaf Ahmad, who is leading with a substantial margin as of 2:30 p.m. As for the overall picture, the National Conference is leading in the Srinagar and Anantnag-Rajouri constituencies, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ahead in Udhampur and Jammu seats. This election marks the first time Jammu and Kashmir is voting as a Union Territory (UT) since the abrogation of its special status in 2019. The region was previously a part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir until it was bifurcated into two Union Territories (Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh) under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The election is also significant as it is the first major poll since the dissolution of the elected Assembly and the revocation of the special status by the BJP-led Union government. Despite facing challenges such as Internet shutdowns, the region has recorded its highest voter turnout in the last 35 years, according to the Election Commission. The election has been conducted in multiple phases, starting on April 19 and concluding on May 25, with one of the UTs five constituencies voting in each phase. Key issues addressed during the elections include restoring peace in the politically volatile region, which has seen frequent instances of violence, and the restoration of Statehood. Controversy arose as several displaced Kashmiri Pandits found their names missing from the electoral rolls. The Indian National Congress, as part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), is contesting for the Udhampur and Jammu seats against BJP candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, in the Baramulla, Srinagar, and Anantnag-Rajouri constituencies, the contest is primarily between two INDIA parties: the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with no NDA contenders. The regional rivalry between PDP and NC has persisted over the years: PDP won three seats in 2014, while NC won three seats in 2019.
