Amit Shah: India's longest serving Home Minister and the architect of a new internal security order
Last month, Amit Shah became Indias longest-serving Union Home Minister, marking 2,258 days in office and surpassing LK Advanis record. Often celebrated as the ruling partys electoral Chanakya, Shah has in parallel emerged as the principal architect of a new internal security order for India. Yet pundits have rarely examined his governance model, which has ushered in a quiet revolution in Indias internal security. Since 2019, his tenure has been defined by bold decisions -- from revoking Jammu & Kashmirs special status to enacting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) -- that have redefined the Home Ministrys role in nation-building. Shahs contribution toward internal security is most prominent in Jammu & Kashmir. In August 2019, just two months into office, he crafted the abrogation of Article 370 and thus invalidated the special autonomy status of J&K. In a historic development, the region was brought under the complete jurisdiction of the Indian Constitution. In the following years, Kashmir has seen a dramatic turn-around in law and order, with stone-pelting incidents brought down nearly to zero. Through the combination of political will and hard security moves, Shah created stability that had been elusive for previous regimes. He responded likewise toward left-wing extremism. Maoist violence went down by over 80% compared to the 2010 peak, and Maoist-affected districts dwindled down to just a measly 18 up until the year 2025. Strengthening of the security forces under Shahs leadership eliminated top rebel commanders and ushered in mass surrenders, striking a telling hammer blow for the Maoist campaign. In the decades-long restive Northeast, Shah also pursued peace with similar vigour. Since 2019, the government signed numerous accords with rebel groups, prompting over 10,000 militants to lay down their arms. As a consequence of the settlements, from Assam's Bodo heartland through Tripura's mountains, the region's insurgency-related violence decreased by 71% and civilian murders by 82% compared to 2014. Through the combination of tough crackdowns with negotiations and development, Shah has transformed the Northeast from a bastion of insurgency into an arena of comparative calm. Through all these fronts, his strategy pairs an iron-fist resistance to violence with avenues for reconciliation, a departure from past governments which consistently framed such conflicts as intractable. A vast majority of Shahs security dividends were enabled through aggressive legislative action. The abrogation of Article 370 was succeeded by a law reconfiguring J&K as Union Territories, a radical assertion of the jurisdiction of the New Delhi establishment. Similarly, Shah pushed through the legislation of the CAA, 2019, completing a decades-long vow of fast-tracking the citizenry of persecuted minorities. In the teeth of protests, the legislation of the CAA was an example of Shah pushing contentious reforms through with unwavering resolve. Another milestone is the upgradation of colonial-age criminal laws. During Shahs stint, Parliament has enacted new codes like the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (upgrading the Indian Penal Code of 1860). These codes have modernised definitions of punishments and crimes, and Shah has challenged the state police to deliver their transformative impact through proper enforcement on the ground. This is his paradigm of governance: supplementing law reform with delivery at the ground level. Shah has also shown a talent for firm executive action against threats. In 2022, he banned the radical group Popular Front of India (PFI) and its sister outfits, neutralising an organisation linked with terrorist violence. The ban followed meticulous countrywide raids that arrested the PFI leadership in one strike. When others were hesitant, Shah bit the bullet by banning the PFI, reflecting his zero-tolerance approach toward terrorism and separatism. In re-imaging the internal security architecture of India, Shah has authored a radically new grammar for the Indian state. He champions an integrated conception of security, widening the purview of the Home Ministry beyond emerging threats such as cyber-fraud, narco-terrorism, and threats from drones. He has challenged the agencies to adopt a multi-dimensional approach and exploit the use of technology through inter-agency collaboration for preventing these threats. Shahs tenure also diverges from his predecessors Home Ministers in reach and intent. LK Advanis tenure was known for a hardline approach to terror (e.g., the POTA law), but didnt essentially alter Indias internal paradigm. P Chidambaram, in the late 2000s, executed incremental reforms after 26/11. Shah, however, has used an iron mandate to bring through transformative reforms once considered impossible. Even PM Modi himself hailed Shahs tenure for its historical moves such as abrogating Article 370 and the CAA, crediting his strong political will in transforming Indias security paradigm. In practice, Shah himself redefined the Home Ministry from being a caretaker ministry to an instrument of national integration and definitive action. Befitting his stature, Shah also inherits the newly created portfolio of cooperation, thereby becoming Indias first Minister for Cooperation and setting the vast thrust of his mandate. His career as the Home Minister is one of a transformational reformer of Indias internal governance. In six years, he re-balanced the countrys security apparatus, crushing militancy in Kashmir, nearly eradicating Maoist terror, ushering the Northeast into an era of calm, and overhauling the laws that underpin public order. These achievements made India a more harmonious and secure country. Forever overshadowed by his talent as a political strategist, Shahs skills as an administrator can no longer be ignored. He has been the architect of a new order of security, one predicated on a muscular state, rule of law, and unapologetic resolve. In reimagining the playbook of internal security, Shah has ensured the Indian state today speaks in a firmer, more determined voice in defending national integrity and public security. Himachal Pradesh becomes fourth State to achieve full functional literacy
NEW DELHI: Himachal Pradesh has become the fourth state to achieve full functional literacy, joining Tripura, Mizoram and Goa in reaching this significant milestone. Ladakh is the first and only Union Territory to have achieved full literacy in June 2024. Taking part in an event organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Ministry of Education on Monday to mark International Literacy Day, Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary expressed delight over HPs achievement. It was especially significant that states with difficult terrains were among the first to achieve this milestone. Despite challenges like limited access to schools, teachers and resources, communities organised themselves, volunteers stepped forward, and governments extended support aiding this feat, he said. This collective achievement shows how determination can overcome geographical constraints and it deserves recognition and applause, Chaudhary added. India has set an example for the world, particularly the Global South, by creating a robust Digital Public Infrastructure that has accelerated education and inclusion, he said. Achievements that might have taken fifty years have been realised in just a decade through Indias digital innovations, he also said. In a virtual address, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, said, Indias literacy rate has risen from 74 per cent in 2011 to 80.9 per cent in 202324, but true progress will be achieved only when literacy becomes a lived reality for every citizen. He spoke about the transformative role of Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society (ULLAS) Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, which has enrolled over 3 crore learners and 42 lakh volunteers. Nearly 1.83 crore learners have already taken foundational literacy and numeracy assessments, with 90 per cent success, Pradhan said. The programme offers learning material in 26 Indian languages, making literacy truly inclusive, the release added. Kishor Barman, Education Minister of Tripura, and Vanlalthlana, Education Minister of Mizoram participated in the event. The theme for this years celebration was Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era, highlighting the pivotal role of digital technology in enabling reading, writing, numeracy, and lifelong learning skills across the country. AIZAWL : With the completion of the 51.38-km broad-gauge line from Bairabi to Sairang, Mizoram becomes the fourth Northeastern state to gain direct train connectivity to its capital. This marks a milestone in Indian Railways ambitious plan to link the capitals of all eight Northeastern states with the national rail network. The line, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, connects Bairabi on the AssamMizoram border to Sairang, located 20 km from Aizawl and 12 km from Lengpui Airport. The new Sairang railway station will serve as the key railhead for Aizawl. The project, for which approval was granted in 2008 and construction began in November 2014, has been built at a cost of 8,071 crore. Engineering feat The 51.38-km line, passing through the Kolasib and Aizawl districts, is an engineering feat, with over half its length running through tunnels and bridges. It includes 48 tunnels spanning 12.85 km, 55 major and 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges, and six road underbridges. The line has three intermediate stations at Hortoki, Kawnpui, and Mualkhang. Among the bridges, Bridge No. 144 over the Kurung River near Sairang has earned the distinction of being the worlds second-tallest pier bridge, rising 114 metres above the ground. The tallest is the Noney Bridge in neighbouring Manipur, standing 141 metres tall, which is being built as part of the under-construction 111-km JiribamImphal railway line. World's second tallest pier bridge over Kurung river at Sairang station Challenges faced The railways faced huge challenges in building the BairabiSairang line due to its rugged Indo-Burmese tectonic terrain, marked by steep slopes, deep valleys, and fragile, clay-like soil prone to erosion. Northeast Frontier Railway (Construction), the agency which executed the project, with design and safety aspects reviewed by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee, had to build 223 km of approach roads as well. Reaching construction sites for hill excavation and pier construction was extremely difficult, as there was no road access. NFR (Construction) built 223 km of approach roads, which have since benefitted several villages in Kolasib and Aizawl districts, a railway official explained. In addition to the topographical challenges, the project encountered other obstacles as well, including opposition to workers brought in from other states and the non-availability of construction materials in Mizoram, which meant they had to be transported from Bihar and Jharkhand. To address local resistance, the Railways eventually engaged local people from Mizoram in the construction work. The project progressed at a slow pace due to the regions short working season of just 67 months a year. Despite higher wages, many labourers left the project because of the remote location and lack of internet connectivity at worksites, the official added. Tunnel in BairabiSairang line Expectations Locals in Dawrpui told TNIE that the railway line will help tackle the high cost of road travel from Silchar to Aizawl, which currently costs between Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,000 along the hilly two-lane highway. During the monsoon season, which lasts for more than five months, landslides frequently cut off road access. Flights, too, are unreliable as they often get cancelled due to bad weather, and there are no departures after 4 pm, said Anthony Zohmingliana, a resident. M. Sathish Kumar, a project associate at Mizoram Central University and a resident of Aizawl for 15 years, noted that over 8 lakh of Mizorams 14 lakh population live in and around Aizawl. This project will benefit a large section of the population, reducing dependence on flights and cabs, he said. Joel Lalengmawii of Lengpui said, My family often travels via Silchar to reach Manipur, Punjab, and Kerala. But the 154-km journey to Silchar takes 910 hours by road. We have been told train fares will be cheaper, but only when services begin will we know how much difference it really makes. S. S. Ajin, a PhD student at Mizoram University, said, We mostly rely on flights or road transport. There are times when vegetables and other essentials do not reach the city for a few days due to landslides on the national highways, and there are no other public transport options. Train connectivity will greatly benefit people from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other states traveling to Mizoram. Once the line becomes operational, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will be able to transport freight for the public distribution system by train, significantly reducing the cost of transporting goods, vegetables, and other items from other states. Initially, passenger services may run between Sairang and Silchar, the railway official added. Rail connectivity to northeast At present, the railway line through Assam's capital, Guwahati, serves as a gateway to the seven other Northeastern states. From Guwahati, branch lines extend to Bairabia station just 7 km inside Mizoram on the SilcharBairabi sectionwhere a passenger train currently runs daily between Bairabi and Silchar. This link to Silchar connects Mizoram with northern and southern states via Guwahati. Additionally, it provides connectivity to Manipur and Nagaland. Guwahati (Assam), Agartala (Tripura), and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) are the other state capitals with rail connectivity. Work is under way to connect the capitals of Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, and Nagaland. NFR officials said they expect these works to be completed by December 2029. It may be noted that Sikkim remains the only Northeastern state without rail connectivity, mainly due to local opposition. Extending to Myanmar Highlighting plans to develop Sairang station with state-of-the-art facilities, the railway official said the government is also exploring the feasibility of extending the line from Sairang to Myanmar. The proposed route would cover 230 km within Mizoram and the remainder in Myanmar. If realized, this would reduce freight transport from South India to Mizoram via Visakhapatnam and Kolkata ports from 2,000 km to just 500 km, the official explained. Fact File: BairabiSairang Broad Gauge Line New Line: BairabiSairang (51.38 km) Key Locations: Bairabi: Border station on AssamMizoram border Sairang: 20 km from Aizawl, Mizoram Project Cost: Rs 8,071 crore Railway Connectivity in the Northeast Guwahati (Assam): Only railway gateway for all eight Northeastern states Line from Guwahati runs to Bairabi (7 km from Assam border via Silchar) BairabiSilchar (105 km): Daily passenger train operational New Line: SairangSilchar (155 km), passenger services to be introduced Road Access Two-lane National Highway is the only mode of access to Aizawl Travel Cost: Rs 1,000Rs 1,600 per person (Silchar Aizawl) Travel Time: 89 hours by road; train will reduce it to 3 hours States with railway connectivity to capitals Assam Guwahati Tripura Agartala Arunachal Pradesh Itanagar Mizoram Sairang (to be inaugurated)

Maharashtra cabinet approves longer work hours for private sector employees
In a key labour reform move, the Maharashtra cabinet has approved amendments to increase the daily working hours for private sector employees from 9 to 10 hours. The decision aligns the state with others like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Tripura, which have already implemented similar changes. The amendments will be made to the Factories Act, 1948, and the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017. The amendments will allow industries to function without disruption during peak demand or labour shortages while ensuring that workers receive proper overtime compensation. With this, the limit of daily working hours in industries will increase from nine to 12 hours, while rest breaks will be allowed after six hours instead of five. The legal overtime cap will rise from 115 to 144 hours per quarter, with mandatory written consent from workers. Weekly work hours will also be extended from 10.5 hours to 12 hours, it said. Similarly, under the amended Shops and Establishments Act, daily working hours will be raised from nine to 10, overtime limits from 125 to 144 hours, and emergency duty hours will be extended to 12. The changes will apply to the establishments having 20 or more workers. Establishments employing fewer than 20 workers will no longer need registration certificates but must notify authorities through a simple intimation process. The state government said the move is designed to boost ease of doing business, attract new investments, create jobs and nsure better wage protection and rights for workers, including double pay for overtime. The Labour Department, which tabled the proposal, emphasized that the reforms will create a more flexible and inclusive work environment, particularly benefiting women and addressing long-standing concerns from both employers and employees.
BTR sets national benchmark with 100 per cent digitisation of land records
GUWAHATI: The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government in Assam has allegedly achieved a rare milestone by recording 100% digitisation of land records, replacing the outdated manual file system and setting a benchmark in transparent governance for the entire Northeast. The Northeast has 10 autonomous councils under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution three each in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, and one in Tripura. These councils are empowered to manage land, forest and local governance in their jurisdictions. However, they have long grappled with infrastructural gaps and administrative bottlenecks. In an attempt to ease governance, the BTR government launched an e-Office system, ensuring 100% digitisation of land records. The adoption of tech-driven governance has not only reshaped the administration within the BTR but also set an example for other autonomous tribal councils across the region to follow. The e-Office system allows electronic handling of files, real-time tracking of decisions, and processing of online approvals. Every land parcel has now been mapped, updated and stored securely in digital format. The digitisation of records has significantly facilitated the processing of applications under Mission Bwiswmuthi, which provides services such as mutation of land and updating of land records. This has enabled people to verify ownership and receive digitally signed documents without the alleged interference of middlemen or the need to physically visit government offices. The digitisation process began in early 2023 and was recently completed, creating a resilient ecosystem for land governance. However, the exercise was not without challenges, as officials had to conduct ground-level surveys across the five districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri, which collectively form the BTR. The process involved converting land records, including several decades-old documents, into digital format. Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping was also incorporated to ensure accuracy in land boundaries, thereby reducing possibilities of disputes. There are instances when land disputes triggered social tensions. Land digitisation has helped maintain transparency and minimise chances of corruption, forgery and conflict, an official from the BTR Land Revenue Department said, calling it a new era of digital governance in a tribal region.

North East Students' Organisation demands for policy to deal with illegal migrants, refugees
GUWAHATI: The North East Students Organisation (NESO) on Monday urged the Centre to formulate a comprehensive policy to deal with the problems of illegal migrants and refugees. In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after holding protest demonstrations across the region, NESO said a great part of the present problem facing the Northeast was relating to the unabated influx of illegal migrants that resulted in a serious demographic change. The continued influx of refugees and undocumented migrants from different countries has created a sense of insecurity and apprehension among the indigenous people that their culture, tradition, political identity, control over land and existence will be swallowed by the outsiders, the memorandum read. According to NESO, the unguarded and porous international border has been used by militant fundamentalist groups to infiltrate into the region, thereby further threatening the existence of indigenous people. There is every reason to believe that there are already a considerable number of fundamentalist groups operating in the NortheastThe region is presently facing an acute economic crisis because of the burgeoning population. There is low per capita income while poverty is on the rise. The problem of unemployment is also on the rise, NESO said. The student body asked the Centre to not view it as a humanitarian problem but a security problem. Time has come to deal with it assertively with renewed and effective bilateral relations with the neighbouring countries, it stressed. NESO suggested the extension of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to the whole of Northeast. An offshoot of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, ILP is an official travel document that an outsider is required to carry while visiting the protected states of Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh for a limited period. Further, NESO urged the Centre to prepare a register of citizens. It demanded the early resettlement of Chakma and Hajong refugees of Bangladesh at any place outside the Northeast. These refugees are settled in Arunachal. it is observed that their prolonged settlement and the initiative of the Government of India to grant Indian citizenship and voting rights to these refugees has been strongly resented by the indigenous people of the state as it has not only created demographic imbalances but a serious political implication, NESO wrote in the memorandum. The other demands include special constitutional safeguards for the indigenous people of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam; and constitution of a special commission to undertake extensive revision of electoral roll aimed at detecting and deleting the names of foreigners and illegal immigrants within a stipulated time.

ECI serves notice to INPT, asking it why the party shall not be delisted
AGARTALA: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has served a show cause notice to Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) asking it to make a written representation as to why the party shall not be delisted, a government release said. Former rebel-turned-politician Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl had floated the INPT way back in 2002 to unite the tribal political forces, but it (INPT) merged with Tipra Motha Party (TMP) in 2021. As per records of the Commission, the INPT party did not set up any candidates at the general elections to the House of the People and to the State Legislative Assembly of Tripura held in 2018 and 2023 respectively, as well as any bye-elections for the last two general elections. It is self-evident that the said party has ceased to function as a political party, said the show cause notice circulated by the Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA) department on Wednesday. The ECI proposes to withdraw the recognition of the party from the list of registered political parties. Before the Commission decides to proceed to withdraw the recognition of the party, it is proposed to give the party an opportunity of making representation/showing cause if any as to why the proposed action should not be taken, it said. Therefore, the INPT is called upon to make a written representation to the ECI in this regard, if it so desires. The representation, if any, should be duly accompanied by an affidavit from the president or the general secretary of the party with supporting documents on which the party proposes to rely upon and should reach latest by 21.08.2025, it said. The date of hearing for the party has been scheduled on August 28 at 3 pm in the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Tripura, Agartala, it said. If no reply is received from the party by the aforesaid date, it will be presumed that the party has nothing to say in the matter and appropriate action will be taken without any further communication to the party, the notice added.

Union cabinet approves schemes, road project worth over Rs 10,000 crore
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a series of schemes and projects, including a Rs 4,200 crore allocation to state governments for the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) Scheme, a Rs 4,250 crore special development package for Assam and Tripura, and a Rs 2,157 crore four-lane National Highway project connecting a 46 km stretch between Marakkanam and Puducherry on the Chennai-Nagapattinam NH 332A. Briefing the media after the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval of the MERITE scheme, aimed at enhancing the quality, equity, and governance in technical education across all states and Union territories. The scheme aligns with the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020) and focuses on improving technical education standards. Vaishnaw stated that the scheme will benefit 175 state engineering colleges and 100 polytechnics, providing funds to states and UTs to support approximately 7.5 lakh students. The initiative aims to enhance employability skills, boost placement rates, reduce unemployment, and strengthen research and innovation ecosystems. It is also expected to improve quality assurance and governance mechanisms in technical education. In another decision, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs 4,250 crore Central Sector Scheme of Special Development Packages (SDPs) for Assam and Tripura to consolidate peace and accelerate development in targeted regions. This follows historic peace accords signed in recent years with key ethnic and insurgent groups, including the Adivasi groups (2022), Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA)/Dimasa Peoples Supreme Council (DPSC) (2023), United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) factions (2023), and National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT)/All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) (2024). Key allocations under the package include Rs 500 crore for Adivasi-inhabited areas in Assam, Rs 500 crore for the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) region targeting Dimasa communities, Rs 3,000 crore for ULFA-affected areas across Assam, and Rs 250 crore for tribal development in Tripura. The total package is worth Rs 7,250 crore, with the remaining Rs 3,000 crore to be contributed by the Assam government. The Assam components will be implemented over five years (20252030), while the Tripura component will span four years (20252029). CCEA approves Rs 2,157 crore four-lane highway project in Tamil Nadu Meanwhile, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the construction of a 46 km four-lane stretch between Marakkanam and Puducherry on National Highway 332A in Tamil Nadu, connecting Chennai with Nagapattinam, at a cost of Rs 2,157 crore. Vaishnaw said the project will be developed on the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) with a concession period of 17 years, including a two-year construction phase. Out of the total length of 46 km, 11 km of the existing two-lane stretch will be upgraded to four lanes, while 35 km will be built as a Greenfield project, he said. Currently, travel between Chennai, Puducherry, Viluppuram, and Nagapattinam relies on the congested two-lane NH-332A and adjoining state highways. The upgrade is expected to ease bottlenecks, improve road safety, and support the mobility needs of rapidly growing urban and economic hubs along the East Coast. The project is also projected to generate nearly 8 lakh man-days of direct employment and 10 lakh man-days of indirect employment during construction.
The Union Cabinet has approved significant proposals, including the MERITE scheme with a Rs 4,200 crore outlay to enhance technical education across 275 institutions. Additionally, Rs 30,000 crore will be allocated to PSU oil companies to offset LPG losses, ensuring uninterrupted supply.

Poshan Tracker data shows persistent malnutrition among children; central, eastern states worst hit
MANGALURU: As of June 2025, 5.46% of children under five in India were found to be wasted (low weight for height), and 15.93% were underweight (low weight for age), according to the latest Poshan Tracker data. Among children aged 06 years, 16.50% were recorded as underweight, indicating that malnutrition continues to pose a significant public health challenge across the country. The figures expose stark disparities among states. Bihar reported 20.98% underweight and 9.31% wasting rates, among the highest in India, followed closely by Madhya Pradesh (24.82% underweight, 8.19% wasting) and Jharkhand (19.13% underweight, 6.68% wasting). Other high-burden states include Tripura, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh, with underweight prevalence ranging from 17% to nearly 20%. In the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, wasting reached 11.62%the highest in the countrywhile 22.54% of children there were underweight. Despite a national push to improve nutrition through Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, the data reveals uneven outcomes. Many states, particularly in central and eastern India, continue to grapple with persistently high malnutrition rates. However, there are clear examples of improvement and effective intervention. Some states have managed to keep both wasting and underweight figures impressively low. Goa reported only 0.78% wasting and 1.96% underweight children. Sikkim (1.95% wasting, 1.69% underweight), Manipur (0.67%, 2.69%), and Himachal Pradesh (2.41%, 6.88%) also performed strongly. Southern states showed moderate success, though with some variations. Tamil Nadu emerged as a top performer in the region, with 3.54% wasting and 6.29% underweight, well below national averages. Kerala reported similarly low wasting (3.20%) but had a higher proportion of underweight children (10.18%). Karnatakas data showed 3.18% wasting, but a relatively high 16.50% underweight. Andhra Pradesh reported 4.97% wasting and 7.68% underweight, while Telangana lagged slightly behind, with 5.93% wasting and 17.00% underweight. These figures suggest that while southern states have managed to contain acute malnutrition to an extent, chronic undernutrition remains a concern, particularly in Karnataka and Telangana. According to data presented in the Lok Sabha, the government's nutrition monitoring system has evolved significantly with the implementation of the Poshan Tracker, launched in March 2021. The tool captures real-time data on growth metrics, daily attendance at Anganwadi centres, and distribution of supplementary nutrition. The integration of facial recognition for Take-Home Ration (THR) distribution and the introduction of dashboard analytics have further improved targeting and transparency. Compared to NFHS-5 (201921), which reported 32.1% underweight and 19.3% wasting among children under five, the current data reflects progress. However, the gap between the projected population of children under six (16.1 crore) and those enrolled in Anganwadi services (8.61 crore) signals the need for expanded coverage and deeper outreach.

Attack during Modis Mann Ki Baat programme in Tripura leaves seven BJP workers injured
GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modis Mann Ki Baat programme at a Tripura village turned violent on Sunday, when an alleged group of Tipra Motha Party (TMP) goons attacked BJP workers, leaving at least seven of them injured. TMP denied its involvement. TMP and BJP are allies and constituents of the state government. The injured were admitted to the Khowai district hospital. The condition of two was reportedly critical. About 15 bikes and two cars were also damaged by the attackers. Authorities deployed a large number of security personnel to the place after the incident. No arrest was made when reports last came in. About 15 bikes and two cars were also damaged by the attackers. BJP mandal president Jayanta Debbarma alleged the attack was perpetrated by over 50 TMP goons.Everything was going on peacefully when suddenly over 50 TMP goons, who were armed with machetes, rods, and other weapons, carried out the attack, disrupting the programme, he alleged. BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma said the attack had left seven workers of the party injured. We condemn this attack, he said. BJPs Tripura chief spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty insisted on a fair investigation into the incident so that the culprits could be brought to book. The injured were admitted to the Khowai district hospital. The condition of two was reportedly critical. It is only after the culprits are arrested that we will know why they carried out this attack. We suspect that it was part of a design to disturb the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the state, Chakraborty told TNIE . TMP founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma slammed the BJP mandal president for implicating TMP to the incident. They (assailants) were CPM workers. The BJP mandal president, who was with the CPM till recently, levelled the allegation against TMP to create mischief, Pradyot said. All parties should screen individuals who are former CPM cadres before giving posts to them. The real issue today is illegal migrants coming in from Bangladesh. There is a larger security concern but they want to talk about BJP and TMP, he further stated.
