Ranji Trophy: Ravindra Jadeja Among India Stars To Watch In Second Round
Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC: With the second round of the 2025/26 Ranji Trophy set to commence on Saturday, left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is set to play for Saurashtra in their Elite Group B game at Rajkot, meaning he will be among the Indian team stars that fans can keep their eyes on for the next few days. In the previous match at the venue, spinners accounted for 31 of the 35 wickets to fall in the drawn encounter at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, where Saurashtra earned three points courtesy of a first-innings lead. Jadeja was resting after playing in Indias 2-0 home Test series win over the West Indies earlier this month and was not included in the squad for the ongoing ODI series in Australia. At Saurashtra, he will rejoin fellow left-arm spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, who took a match haul of 10-203 against Karnataka. Jadejas return is expected to enhance the bowling attack with more depth and experience as Saurashtra aim to build on their early momentum. Another major clash in the second round will see Bengal facing Gujarat at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where Mohammed Shami, Akash Deep, and Abhimanyu Easwaran will be in action. Shami, the veteran India pacer, had taken a match-winning seven-wicket haul in the win over Uttarakhand, and how he fares against a strong Gujarat bowling line-up will make for an interesting watch. The second round of the Ranji Trophy will feature 19 matches played across the country, in both Elite and Plate Divisions. Mumbai, fresh from an away victory against Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar, will host Chhattisgarh in an Elite Group D match at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai. NEW DELHI: Exposing increasingly sophisticated smuggling operations that span continents, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has intercepted and seized around 321 kilograms of smuggled gold worth Rs 406.35 crore between January and October this year. The seizures and interception data -- 65 cases -- show a disturbing picture of an organised syndicate gang that operates with military precision. The wellfunded internationally coordinated syndicates have adapted rapidly to the countrys enforcement agencies' measures. In fact, the Director General of DRI, Abhai Kumar Srivastav, has written to the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Praveen Sood in April this year to unravel the entire gold smuggling nexus as it involves a coordinated international crime syndicate and a few government officials. Intelligence agencies have stated that for every kilogramme intercepted, three to five kilogrammes successfully enter India. On analysis of seizure and interception data of DRI done by TNIE, there were distinct patterns in both air and land-based smuggling operations this year. It has been found that there are four major air routes and three major land routes. The air smuggling network operates primarily through four major routes: the Dubai-Mumbai corridor; the Bangkok-Ahmedabad route; the Bangkok-Kolkata channel; and the broader Middle East triangle that encompasses Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Riyadh, with gold entering through multiple airports, including Ahmedabad, Calicut, and Jaipur. There are three major land-based smuggling routes: the Myanmar-northeast corridor, the Nepal-Bihar corridor, and the Bangladesh and the five bordering Indian states corridor. The highest volume of seizures, with over 18 incidents, makes the Dubai-Mumbai corridor the single largest channel used by the organised crime syndicate. This route has seen 40 percent of seizures. The second critical route for smuggling is from Bangkok. The two major feeding corridors are the Bangkok-Kolkata and Bangkok-Ahmedabad routes. The crime syndicate using the Middle East triangle uses a diversified entry point into Indian, and it is designed to avoid scrutiny at any single point and to get away from law enforcement agencies. The land route represents a complex web spread by crime syndicate. Once the gold enters from Myanmar through the porous borders of Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, it is smuggled through railway stations. Sealdah and Dum Dum in Kolkata serve as primary hubs. In addition to West Bengal, the smuggled gold is distributed through trains to Chhapra, Patna, Banaras and Delhi. The Nepal border corridor shows a similar pattern. Once the gold enters India, smugglers use express trains to reach Delhi, and in this case, the New Delhi Railway Station becomes the primary hub. From there, it is distributed to northern India. Through the Bangladesh border corridor, gold reached West Bengal through road transport and was then distributed through train. The crime syndicate exploits both aviation networks and ground transportation infrastructure with military precision to avoid law enforcement agencies in India. The data also reveals two disturbing trends: one, smuggling through rectal and internal body concealment, and second, people in financial distress from across the globe are used as couriers. The data reveals that 25 percent of passenger-based smuggling attempts were made through rectal and internal body concealment. In these cases, capsules containing gold paste or dust or even small bars are being ingested or inserted. Further, arrest data shows that people financially distressed from Thailand, Iran, Turkey, Brazil, Chad, and even US nationals were used. Language becomes a major crisis for them, and they get caught. These trends reveal that the smuggling of gold is rampant in India, and there is a need for enhancing law enforcement agencies with the latest technologies and international cooperation to deal with this organized crime syndicate.

Two ancient temples of Sivanvoyal
Sivanvoyal (Sivanvayal) is a small village located in the Thiruvallur district, with historical connections to the Pallava era. According to epigraphists, the antiquity of the name of this village goes back to the Pallava times, as it is mentioned in an inscription of the reign of a late Pallava king named Dantivarman. The name Sivanvayal means entrance (vayal or vasal) of Siva, and there is an ancient Siva temple here. This temple, wherein the Siva Lingam is worshipped as Sivandeeshwarar, is now a modern, renovated structure. It has neither a gopuram nor a compound wall. The entrance to this temple and the main sanctum face east with a modern mandapam in front. The shrine for Parvathi, worshipped here as Tripurasundari Ambal, faces south with the entrance from this mandapam . A large Nandi faces the main sanctum. Close to this Siva temple in Sivanvayal is another ancient temple for Vishnu, which belongs to the Pallava era, as attested to by inscriptions found here. The deity is now worshipped as Vaikuntha Varadaraja Perumal. An epigraph, which belongs to the 9th century CE, seen on the ceiling of the main garbha-griha (sanctum), mentions the name of this deity as Vaikuntha Natha. Though this inscription is not seen clearly, it seems to state that the temple of Vaikuntha Natha was constructed by a lady named Kumarichchani. This small Vishnu temple, which faces east, has an image of Vaikuntha Varadaraja Perumal flanked by Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi. He holds the sankha and chakra in the upper hands, while the lower right hand is in abhaya hasta (blessing) and lower left hand is in kati hasta (resting on the hip). This temple was in a dilapidated condition and has now been renovated. An epigraph, which is in Samskrit language and etched in the Pallava Grantha script, is seen on a huge broken pillar, a part of which is now in front of this Vishnu temple. This pillar, once used as a step by local residents, is made of granite and has inscriptions on three sides. It was probably part of the original temple, which has undergone a lot of modernisation and has lost most of the vestiges of antiquity. This pillar inscription belongs to the reign of Narasimhavarman I Pallava (630-668 CE), famously known by his title Mamalla (great wrestler), son of Mahendravarman I Pallava and contemporary of the Chalukya ruler Pulakesin II. This epigraph records details about King Simhavarman, probably his ancestor, and describes him as being born in the Pallava family just as God Vishvaksena (Vishnu) was born in the Vrishni clan. Simhavarman is said to have performed the Dashashvamedha (ten Ashvamedha) and Bahusuvarna sacrifices. He is mentioned as deva in this lithic record.

Uttarakhand secures Rs 100 crore incentive in Mining Readiness Index, BJP targets Congress
DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand has secured second place in its category in the latest State Mining Readiness Index (SMRI), making the Himalayan state eligible for a Rs 100 crore central government incentive. Launched by the Union Ministry of Mines, the SMRI aims to promote reforms in the mining sector at the state level. This central recognition has quickly become a political tool for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand, where mining is a contentious issue often sparking sharp political debates. The incentive is part of the Special Assistance Scheme for Capital Investment (SASCI) 2025-26 by the Finance Ministrys Department of Expenditure. The scheme has a total allocation of Rs 5,000 crore, with Rs 900 crore reserved for the top three performers across Categories A, B, and C of the SMRI rankings, ensuring each qualifying state receives Rs 100 crore. States were classified into three categories based on their mineral wealth: Category A for mineral-rich states, Category B for those with moderate resources, and Category C for states with limited mineral resources. Uttarakhand placed second in Category C, securing the central reward. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami praised the achievement and said that, Mining is a significant contributor to the states revenue, and the state government is emphasising eco-friendly and legal mining practices. We have consistently cracked down on illegal mining and taken strict action against tax evasion. Dhami highlighted an unprecedented increase of Rs 800 crore in mining revenue, stating it demonstrates the efficacy, transparency, and strength of the states new mining policy. He noted that officials from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are studying Uttarakhands model. The BJP immediately leveraged the news politically, targeting the main opposition party, Congress. State Media Head Manveer Singh Chauhan described the surge in mining revenue as a pleasant sign and a sharp slap in the face of the Congress. Chauhan told the TNIE , The revenue figure from mining is historic. The Congress, which has been spreading political disinformation on this issue, must now clarify its stance. In 2019-20, the revenue was less than Rs 400 crore. It was a clear loss-making situation benefiting the mafia, whereas now the revenue is accumulating in the state's treasury. He credited the success, where Uttarakhand ranked ahead of Punjab and Tripura in Category C, to transparent policies. The Central Ministry of Mines has recognised Uttarakhands administrative efficiency in the SMRI 2025. Chauhan added that Uttarakhands mining reforms, transparency, and efficiency generated over Rs 1,000 crore in revenue in FY 2024-25.

New Delhi rejects Dhaka's lynching' claim over death of three Bangladeshi nationals in Tripura
NEW DELHI: A diplomatic row has flared between India and Bangladesh after New Delhi flatly rejected Dhaka's assertion that three Bangladeshi nationals were lynched by a mob in Tripura, and said the men died following a violent altercation while attempting to steal cattle deep inside Indian territory. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, has escalated the war of words between the two neighbors, whose relationship has been strained since the interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus assumed power in August 2024. They attacked and injured local villagers with iron dahs and knives, and killed one villager, even as other villagers arrived and resisted the attackers, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. Authorities rushed to the spot, where two smugglers were found dead, and a third succumbed to his injuries in the hospital the following day. The mortal remains of all three have been handed over to the Bangladesh side. Police have also registered a case. This incident underscores the need for Bangladesh to undertake necessary measures to uphold the sanctity of the International Boundary and support the construction of fencing where needed to prevent cross-border crimes and smuggling, the spokesperson said. The Government of Bangladesh had lodged a strong protest, with its Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement condemning the brutal beating and killing of three Bangladeshi citizens by a mob.

Uttarakhand tops Himalayan states in illegal arms cases: NCRB report
DEHRADUN: The serene image of Uttarakhand is sharply contrasted by alarming crime statistics, with the state leading Himalayan regions in cases related to illegal arms possession. A recent report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2023 has brought this unsettling reality to the forefront. According to the NCRB data, a staggering 1,767 cases were registered against individuals in Uttarakhand for possessing arms in 2023. Of these seizures, 1,184 weapons were found to be illegal, while only four legal firearms were recovered in these specific registered instances. This places Uttarakhand seventh nationally in the overall count of arms possession cases. It seems that possessing firearms, both legal and illegal, is increasingly being treated as a hobby by some residents of this Himalayan state, noted a senior police official familiar with the report's findings. The trend is further complicated by the open display of weaponry. In districts like Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar, instances of firing weapons over trivial disputes are surfacing, sometimes even being circulated on social media. Police efforts, however, are noted; in 2023 alone, authorities filed charges against 1,767 individuals under the Arms Act. Crucially, the report indicates that illegal firearms are heavily implicated in serious crimes. The majority of recovered illegal weapons were linked to violent offenses, including murders and attempts to cause grievous hurt, the report states. Beyond arms possession, the state has also seen a rise in violent crimes. Registered incidents of homicide, robbery, and kidnapping rose from 3,162 in 2021 to 3,923 in 2022, settling slightly lower at 3,570 in 2023. A significant concern remains the judicial backlog, with police filing chargesheets in only 58 percent of the 2023 cases, leaving many pending investigation closure. Udham Singh Nagar, particularly sensitive regarding crime, is reportedly a hub for this illicit trade, with police and STF units frequently busting illegal arms manufacturing units in nearby Terai forests, often sourcing supplies from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh areas. Responding to the findings, Uttarakhand Police Spokesperson Dr. Nilesh Anand Bharane affirmed a strict stance. Police action against illegal arms holders is ongoing. Miscreancy will not be tolerated in the state. Whoever the criminal, their rightful place will always be behind bars. Trinamool takes fight to Tripura: Delegation visits Agartala party office vandalised by BJP
Delegation stranded at Agartala airport after convoy allegedly held back; West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee accuses double-engine BJP government in Tripura of restraining their movement
All India Trinamool Congress slams BJP over vandalism of party office in Tripura
GUWAHATI: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Wednesday slammed the BJP for its alleged involvement in the vandalism of its Tripura head office in the state capital Agartala on Tuesday evening. The AITC said under the BJPs rule, Tripura had been transformed into a theatre of terror, a place where jungle raj is the new normal and gratuitous political violence has become a tool of governance rather than an aberration. The AITC rushed a six-member delegation to BJP-ruled Tripura to take stock of the situation. The delegation met Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag to condemn the ongoing political violence and targeted intimidation in the state. The AITC alleged that Tripura Police remained silent spectators, both during the attack on the party office and when its delegation was restricted from visiting the same office on Wednesday. Our delegation condemned this misuse of state machinery to suppress democratic voices and urged the DGP to take immediate action, the AITC said. It further stated that when those in power themselves lead mobs and orchestrate violence, it is not just an attack on a political opponent, it is a direct assault on democracy. The mastermind of the Agartala vandalism is none other than Big-Flop Deb. After being unceremoniously removed from the Chief Ministers chair in 2022 and dismissed within his own party as incompetent, he has now been parachuted into Bengal as BJPs election in-charge for 2026, the AITC said, referring to Biplab Kumar Deb. Desperate to prove his worth, the AITC alleged, Deb is engineering provocation and orchestrating violence to pad up his scorecard. In Kolkata, AITC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she would go to Tripura, if required. The BJP had on Tuesday taken out a rally to condemn the assault on the partys West Bengal MP Khagen Murmu, allegedly carried out by AITC workers in North Bengal recently. It was during the rally that some people perpetrated the violence.

Only two HCs have full strength of judges amid pendency load
NEW DELHI: Indias High Courts are facing a serious manpower crisis, with 330 judges posts lying vacant across 25 states. The Allahabad High Court is the worst affected, with 76 vacancies out of its sanctioned strength of 160the highest among all High Courts. Only two high courts, Sikkim and Meghalaya, are currently functioning with a full bench, according to data accessed by this newspaper from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) and the Department of Justice. The data is as of September 1 this year. Despite the Supreme Court operating at full strength with 34 judges, the same cannot be said of the high courts, where the shortfall is slowing down the delivery of justice and adding to already massive case backlogs. The sanctioned strength of judges across all high courts is 1,122. But only 792 judges are currently serving. The 330 vacant posts include 161 permanent and 169 additional judges, who are usually appointed for a term not exceeding two years. Legal experts and former judges warn that unless these vacancies are filled promptly, the justice delivery system will continue to suffer badly resulting case pendency going up. The pendency of appointments directly affects case disposal. Litigants suffer the most, said Justice Anjana Prakash, former judge of the Patna High Court. Unless the judiciary and the Central government at address this as a very urgent issue, delays will persist. That is not something very desirable. Justice S R Singh, a former judge of the Allahabad High Court, expressed similar concern. Existing judges are overburdened, which affects both quality and efficiency. Appointments should be made strategically, based on pending caseloads in each high court, he told this newspaper. According to the NJDG, over 67 lakh cases are pending in high courts across the country. The Supreme Court itself has more than 60,000 pending cases despite having no vacancies to fill. Several major high courts continue to grapple with significant judicial vacancies, impacting the pace of justice delivery. The Bombay High Court leads with 26 vacancies out of 94 sanctioned judges. The Punjab and Haryana High Court follows closely with 25 out of 85 positions vacant. Calcutta has 24 out of 72, while Madras faces 19 vacancies out of 75. Patna has 18 out of 53, Delhi 16 out of 60, and Rajasthan 7 out of 50. The persistent shortage of judges is raising concerns over mounting case backlogs and delays in adjudication across these key judicial institutions. Judicial appointments remain a pressing issue for Indias legal system. Smaller high courts also reflect the strain: Uttarakhand has two vacancies out of 11 judges, and Tripura has one vacancy out of five. The appointment process, governed by the Collegium system and requiring government nod, has long been pointed out as reasons for delays. Recommendations are often returned, kept pending, or ignored causing bottlenecks that stretch for months before appointments are made. As the backlog continues to mount, the judiciary is under growing pressure to act swiftly. Experts say that urgent reforms and smoother coordination between the judiciary and the executive are essential to restore the efficiency of the justice system and public faith in it.
Three children go missing every day in Uttarakhand, raising concerns over child safety
DEHRADUN: A deeply alarming trend of missing children continues to plague the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, casting a dark shadow over its image as a peaceful haven. Despite intensified police vigilance, awareness campaigns, and frequent checkpoints, official data reveals a staggering and deeply concerning rate of disappearances. According to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the fiscal year 2023-24, an average of three children went missing in Uttarakhand every single day. The report highlights that a total of 1,209 children under the age of 18 were reported missing during this period. The most heartbreaking statistic, however, is the low recovery rate, only 276 of these children have been reunited with their families, leaving a staggering 933 children still unaccounted for. The report further breaks down the missing minors, 408 boys and 802 girls were reported missing, of whom 128 boys and 148 girls were subsequently found. Comparative glance: Himalayan states (2023-24 Data) State Missing Recovered Himachal Pradesh 504 81 Uttarakhand 1209 276 Sikkim 22 13 Arunachal Pradesh 40 21 Nagaland 47 0 Manipur 89 24 Mizoram 1 0 Tripura 268 37 Social activists have voiced strong concerns over the persistent crisis. Anoop Nautiyal, founder president of the Social Development for Communities Foundation, told this newspaper, This situation is deeply worrisome, especially when the state police run 'Operation Smile' every year specifically to trace missing children. The opposition has sharply criticised the ruling governments handling of law and order in light of these figures. Mohan Kala, spokesperson for the Congress party in the state, stated, The claims of the BJP government, which boasts of a safe and tranquil Uttarakhand, have been completely exposed by this data on law and order. Furthermore, the image of Uttarakhand, famous nationwide for tourism and religious pilgrimage, has been severely tarnished. Kala added, There is much fanfare and photo opportunities when claims are made about finding missing children and reuniting them with their families, but the NCRB report released just two days ago has laid bare the reality of police performance. The NCRB report, which compiles annual crime statistics across the country, also tracks general missing persons cases. In Uttarakhand, a total of 6,532 individuals were reported missing in 2023-24, comprising 3,277 men and 3,255 women. Out of these, the police managed to trace 2,701 missing persons, including 1,688 men and 1,013 women.
Across India, only two high courts fully staffed; Allahabad tops with 76 vacancies
NEW DELHI: High Courts across India are grappling with 330 vacant judge positions out of a total sanctioned strength of 1,122, causing mounting delays and affecting millions of litigants, according to the Department of Justice data as of September 1, 2025. The Allahabad High Court has the highest number of vacancies at 76, including 35 permanent and 41 additional judges. Other major High Courts with significant gaps include Bombay (26), Punjab and Haryana (25), Calcutta (24), Madras (19), Patna (18), Delhi (16), and Rajasthan (7). Uttarakhand has two vacancies, Tripura has one. Out of 25 states, only the High Courts of Sikkim and Meghalaya are functioning at their full sanctioned strength. Data from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) shows over 67 lakh pending cases across High Courts and more than 60,000 in the Supreme Court. While the Supreme Court operates at full strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, High Courts struggle with excessive workloads. Experts attribute the shortage to delays in the appointment process at both the Collegium and government levels, with repeated recommendations sometimes facing executive resistance or remaining unaddressed for months. Former High Court judges and legal experts say that the high vacancy rates in High Courts are a major obstacle to the justice system, causing delays and contributing to growing case backlogs. Retired Patna High Court Judge and legal expert, Justice Anajana Prakash, talking to the TNIE , said that the pendency of filling up judges' posts in HCs added to the woes of the disposal of cases, and as a result, ultimately, litigants suffer for this. The filling up of judges' posts in HCs should be addressed expeditiously. Until and unless the judiciary and the centre decide and deliberate upon this issue, the case disposal rate won't increase, which will ultimately affect the litigants at the state level, she said. Former Allahabad High Court Judge Justice S.R. Singh told the TNIE that judge vacancies in High Courts are a major concern, causing hardship for litigants. Vacancies of judges lead to an unnecessary workload for existing judges, which can compromise the quality of judgments and cause burnout. So a judicious choice must be there to appoint judges keeping in view the pendency across HCs, he said. The vacancies include 161 permanent posts and 169 additional (temporary) posts, the latter appointed by the President for a maximum of two years to address temporary workload spikes.

'System is killing them': Rahul slams Modi govt over rising farmer suicides in Maharashtra In 2022, Uttarakhand reported zero suicides, but in 2023, it contributed to the suicide count. However, this year, no suicide was reported in Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh, while in the previous year, it contributed. In 2022, the number of farm sector suicides was comparatively higher. A total of 11,290 persons involved in the farming sector have committed suicide in 2022. It consisted of 5,207 farmers and 6,083 agricultural labourers. Out of the total 5,207 farmer suicides, a total of 4,999 were male and 208 were female. Similarly, out of 6,083 suicides committed by agricultural labourers during 2022, 5,472 were male and 611 were female. Meanwhile, NCRB reported total of 1,71,418 suicides committed in the country during 2023, showing an increase of 0.3% in comparison to 2022. Amit Shah: India's longest serving Home Minister and the architect of a new internal security order
Last month, Amit Shah became Indias longest-serving Union Home Minister, marking 2,258 days in office and surpassing LK Advanis record. Often celebrated as the ruling partys electoral Chanakya, Shah has in parallel emerged as the principal architect of a new internal security order for India. Yet pundits have rarely examined his governance model, which has ushered in a quiet revolution in Indias internal security. Since 2019, his tenure has been defined by bold decisions -- from revoking Jammu & Kashmirs special status to enacting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) -- that have redefined the Home Ministrys role in nation-building. Shahs contribution toward internal security is most prominent in Jammu & Kashmir. In August 2019, just two months into office, he crafted the abrogation of Article 370 and thus invalidated the special autonomy status of J&K. In a historic development, the region was brought under the complete jurisdiction of the Indian Constitution. In the following years, Kashmir has seen a dramatic turn-around in law and order, with stone-pelting incidents brought down nearly to zero. Through the combination of political will and hard security moves, Shah created stability that had been elusive for previous regimes. He responded likewise toward left-wing extremism. Maoist violence went down by over 80% compared to the 2010 peak, and Maoist-affected districts dwindled down to just a measly 18 up until the year 2025. Strengthening of the security forces under Shahs leadership eliminated top rebel commanders and ushered in mass surrenders, striking a telling hammer blow for the Maoist campaign. In the decades-long restive Northeast, Shah also pursued peace with similar vigour. Since 2019, the government signed numerous accords with rebel groups, prompting over 10,000 militants to lay down their arms. As a consequence of the settlements, from Assam's Bodo heartland through Tripura's mountains, the region's insurgency-related violence decreased by 71% and civilian murders by 82% compared to 2014. Through the combination of tough crackdowns with negotiations and development, Shah has transformed the Northeast from a bastion of insurgency into an arena of comparative calm. Through all these fronts, his strategy pairs an iron-fist resistance to violence with avenues for reconciliation, a departure from past governments which consistently framed such conflicts as intractable. A vast majority of Shahs security dividends were enabled through aggressive legislative action. The abrogation of Article 370 was succeeded by a law reconfiguring J&K as Union Territories, a radical assertion of the jurisdiction of the New Delhi establishment. Similarly, Shah pushed through the legislation of the CAA, 2019, completing a decades-long vow of fast-tracking the citizenry of persecuted minorities. In the teeth of protests, the legislation of the CAA was an example of Shah pushing contentious reforms through with unwavering resolve. Another milestone is the upgradation of colonial-age criminal laws. During Shahs stint, Parliament has enacted new codes like the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (upgrading the Indian Penal Code of 1860). These codes have modernised definitions of punishments and crimes, and Shah has challenged the state police to deliver their transformative impact through proper enforcement on the ground. This is his paradigm of governance: supplementing law reform with delivery at the ground level. Shah has also shown a talent for firm executive action against threats. In 2022, he banned the radical group Popular Front of India (PFI) and its sister outfits, neutralising an organisation linked with terrorist violence. The ban followed meticulous countrywide raids that arrested the PFI leadership in one strike. When others were hesitant, Shah bit the bullet by banning the PFI, reflecting his zero-tolerance approach toward terrorism and separatism. In re-imaging the internal security architecture of India, Shah has authored a radically new grammar for the Indian state. He champions an integrated conception of security, widening the purview of the Home Ministry beyond emerging threats such as cyber-fraud, narco-terrorism, and threats from drones. He has challenged the agencies to adopt a multi-dimensional approach and exploit the use of technology through inter-agency collaboration for preventing these threats. Shahs tenure also diverges from his predecessors Home Ministers in reach and intent. LK Advanis tenure was known for a hardline approach to terror (e.g., the POTA law), but didnt essentially alter Indias internal paradigm. P Chidambaram, in the late 2000s, executed incremental reforms after 26/11. Shah, however, has used an iron mandate to bring through transformative reforms once considered impossible. Even PM Modi himself hailed Shahs tenure for its historical moves such as abrogating Article 370 and the CAA, crediting his strong political will in transforming Indias security paradigm. In practice, Shah himself redefined the Home Ministry from being a caretaker ministry to an instrument of national integration and definitive action. Befitting his stature, Shah also inherits the newly created portfolio of cooperation, thereby becoming Indias first Minister for Cooperation and setting the vast thrust of his mandate. His career as the Home Minister is one of a transformational reformer of Indias internal governance. In six years, he re-balanced the countrys security apparatus, crushing militancy in Kashmir, nearly eradicating Maoist terror, ushering the Northeast into an era of calm, and overhauling the laws that underpin public order. These achievements made India a more harmonious and secure country. Forever overshadowed by his talent as a political strategist, Shahs skills as an administrator can no longer be ignored. He has been the architect of a new order of security, one predicated on a muscular state, rule of law, and unapologetic resolve. In reimagining the playbook of internal security, Shah has ensured the Indian state today speaks in a firmer, more determined voice in defending national integrity and public security.
