Outsourcing Manipur to Amit Shah abdication of PM Modi's responsibility: Congress slams Modi
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of abdicating his responsibilities by outsourcing Manipur to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The opposition party reiterated its demand for the PM to visit the violence-hit northeastern state, terming his absence a disastrous neglect of duty. The criticism came after Prime Minister Modi extended greetings to the people of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur on their Statehood Day through a social media post. In response, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh took to X (formerly Twitter), accusing the prime minister of hypocrisy and indifference towards the crisis in Manipur, which has been engulfed in ethnic violence since May 3, 2023. Ramesh stated, The formerly non-biological and now suddenly human Prime Minister has just sent greetings to the people of Manipur on their Statehood Day through social media. Yet, he has stubbornly refused to visit Manipur even briefly ever since its agony began. He further criticized Modi for travelling extensively around the world while ignoring the plight of the people in Manipur. According to Ramesh, the prime minister has refused to meet with BJP MLAs from the state, avoided one-on-one discussions with the chief minister, and declined to engage with MPs, political leaders, or civil society organizations from Manipur. The formerly non-biological - and now suddenly human - Prime Minister has just sent greetings to the people of Manipur on their Statehood Day through social media. He has gone Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) January 21, 2025 Ramesh described Modi's Statehood Day message as hollow and reflective of hypocrisy that knows no limits. He emphasized that the Congress party demands the prime minister visit Manipur immediately, stating, This is the very least he can do to show his concern, if he has any. The Congress party has been vocal in its criticism of the prime minister's handling of the crisis in Manipur, accusing the central government of failing to address the ethnic strife between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo groups residing in the hills. Since the violence erupted in May 2023, over 220 people have been killed and thousands have been displaced. Manipur violence: Amit Shah says Centre ready for fresh talks with Meiteis, Kukis The opposition has also slammed Modi for his alleged indifference, asserting that his decision to delegate the matter to the Union Home Minister demonstrates a lack of accountability. Last week, the Congress alleged that while Modi has found the time and energy to visit various countries, he has neglected to reach out to the distressed people of Manipur. The ongoing ethnic violence in the state remains a critical issue, with the Congress party demanding immediate action and direct intervention from the prime minister to restore peace and stability. Saif Ali Khan to remain hospitalised for few more days
Mumbai: Actor Saif Ali Khans discharge from the hospital has been delayed and he is likely to get discharged either on Tuesday or Wednesday after the doctors are sure about his complete recovery. Khan had sustained six knife injuries during an attempted burglary at his Mumbai home on Thursday. The police have arrested Mohammed Shariful Islam, a suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, who allegedly broke into the actors residence in Bandra and stabbed him six times including one near his spine and one on his neck. Though the doctors said that Khan has recovered well, he will be kept under medical supervision for a day or two more. Dr. Nitin Dange of Lilavati Hospital informed, The decision on discharging him will be made in the next one to two days. The medical team wants to perform further tests to ensure that his recovery is complete and that there are no complications related to his injuries. Once his tests, including blood reports and a full body check-up, show normal results, the doctors will proceed with his discharge, a source informed. The police claimed that they have found the accused persons fingerprints at at least 19 places in Khans house. They have also found that he has a history of committing theft. While working at a pub in the Worli Koliwada area a few months ago he was caught stealing a guests diamond ring and subsequently fired from his job. Meanwhile, the political blame game has continued over the incident. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and urged for the removal of all Bangladeshis from the country. If the man who attacked Khan is a Bangladeshi, then the central government is responsible. It is Amit Shahs responsibility and he should resign, he said. Hitting back at the Shiv Sena (UBT), BJP leader Ashish Shelar dared Uddhav Thackeray to confront West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over the illegal immigration of Bangladeshis and her opposition to the deployment of the BSF on the border. Illegal immigration of Bangladeshi citizens does not occur in states like Assam and Tripura, where the BJP is in power. It is happening in Mamata Didis West Bengal. Why Uddhav Thackeray has not confronted her about this illegal immigration? She opposes the deployment of the Border Security Forces in her state. So, stop this hypocrisy for political gain, Shelar stated on X.

RANCHI: Students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, located in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, are set to give a band performance during the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January. Among three schools chosen nationwide to perform on the rostrum at Kartavya Path, this Jharkhand school earned its place alongside schools from Tripura and Sikkim. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Education Minister Ramdas Soren, and other senior state officials have congratulated the team on this remarkable achievement. Notably, the Piper Band team from the school secured the first prize in the Zonal Level Band Competition held in Guwahati on 22 December 2024. According to the warden, it is due to the hard work and consistent practice that these girls were selected for Republic Day. According to the State Programme Officer, Dhirasen Soreng, the girl band team from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Patamda, was selected due to their precision and uniformity in playing tunes. The girl band, on the other hand, is quite excited that they will be performing before the President. We never thought that we would ever get selected for the Republic Day parade. It is really a great honour for all of us that we will be a part of the Republic Day parade, said one of the band members, Parvati Mahto, a class 11 student of the school. The band has been in Ranchi since 4 January and practising rigorously to compete with the other schools for the national-level competition, to be held in New Delhi itself before the Republic Day, she added. Mahto informed that the selection process for the pipe band competition began at the block level, followed by district and state levels. The team that was selected at the state level earned the opportunity to participate in the zonal-level competition, ultimately paving the way for their Republic Day debut. Now, they are preparing for the national-level competition, she said. The education department of Jharkhand has been making consistent efforts since 2015 to secure an opportunity to perform on the Republic Day Parade Rostrum.

Construction of 'permanent' river embankment by Bangladesh along border raises alarm in Tripura
GUWAHATI: The construction of a 'permanent' river embankment by Bangladesh at zero point along the border with India has set alarm bells ringing in Tripura. The construction is taking place between Bangladeshs Moulvibazar and Tripuras Unakoti districts. River Manu flows between the districts and it is feared that the situation in Unakoti might be devastating during the next flood. Officials in Tripura said Bangladesh did not inform India before getting ahead with the work. The construction is being seen as a one against the spirit of the Indo-Bangla Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Peace which does not allow any permanent construction on 150 yards from the zero point. Accompanied by senior officials, Unakoti District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma inspected the site on Friday. They (Bangladesh) are building an embankment for protection from floods. We visited the border area to take stock of it. We thought they have substantially raised the height of their old embankment, Chakma told media. We will be required to strengthen our existing embankment as water will flow towards us more now. The matter has to be dealt with at a higher level, he further stated. According to the DM, the Indian embankment is located around 350 yards from the zero point. We have no idea about the length of the embankment, roughly around 1 km of it is visible. Work is still in progress. We learnt that they are preparing to make it pucca. I feel India should take necessary steps, he added. It was learnt that the state government would take up the matter with the Centre after receiving a report from the DM. The matter was first brought to the notice of the state government by local Congress legislator Birajit Sinha. I noticed the construction during a recent visit to the border and brought it to the governments attention in the Assembly. The government had no idea. I insisted on immediate measures. The Chief Minister said necessary steps would be taken in consultations with the central government, Sinha told TNIE on Saturday. Bangladesh raised the embankments height to a great extent, the floods would leave a trail of devastation in Unakoti, particularly the Kailasahar town, he added. Our embankment has a low elevation. It is very old and weakened. It requires repairs urgently. Last year, the water of River Manu entered the Kailasahar town through a rusty sluice gate and wreaked havoc, Sinha also said.
Meghalaya has more schools than needed, reveals study
GUWAHATI: Meghalaya has more schools than needed, a departmental study revealed. The state has 14,582 schools against a population of 29,66,889 (Census 2011). For comparison, Manipur, with a population of 25,70,390, has only 4,617 schools while Tripura (population 36,73,917) has only 4,929 schools. Similarly, Himachal Pradesh, which has a more challenging terrain than Meghalaya, has 17,826 schools, serving a population of 68.64 lakh. Kerala, with a population of 3.34 crore -- more than 11 times that of Meghalaya, has more or less the same number of schools -- 15,864. This disproportionate number of schools in Meghalaya has resulted in skewed student enrollment. Another key finding of the study is that Meghalaya has 206 schools with zero enrolment and 2,269 schools with single-digit enrolment. Additionally, the state has an unusually high number of aided schools. Nationwide, aided schools account for less than 5 per cent of the total number of schools. However, in Meghalaya, the proportion is 29 per cent. According to the study, a reason behind the large number of schools is that a single school is often counted multiple times in the data. This occurs when a private school seeks multiple grants from the government. For example, a school may be counted as four separate schools (SSA, Adhoc, Deficit and Private), even though it is managed and owned by a single entity, the study said. As far as performance is concerned, the pass percentage of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination in the state in the past ten years was between 50.31 and 56.96. When asked if the government will merge the schools with zero enrolment with nearby schools as done in neighbouring Assam, Commissioner & Secretary Vijay Mantri told TNIE that the government would take a decision by the end of February. Meghalaya also has a skewed distribution of institutes of higher education. East Khasi Hills district has 47 such institutes as against 15 in West Garo Hills, ten in Ri-Bhoi, seven in West Jaintia Hills, three each in Eastern West Khasi Hills, South West Garo Hills, West Khasi Hills, two each in East Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills and one each in East Jaintia Hills, North Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts.

Pradeep C. Nair | Keeping balance between China & US: Tough times for Yunus Bdesh
A recent article in Pratham Alo , a Bangladeshi English daily, headlined Touhid-Wang Meeting on 21 January: Issues to Gain Priority, is telling on the paradoxical situation that Bangladesh is caught up in now, and raises question about the longevity and legality of the Muhammad Yunus government. Recently, Mr Yunus interim government announced elections would be held in the country within 18 months. However, will Mr Yunus be able to carry out the multiple reforms that he has been promising, before that? The fact that reforms by a government that is not elected and lacks constitutional legitimacy is also not lost on anyone. The article begins by announcing a four-day visit by Bangladeshs foreign affairs adviser Touhid Hossain to China from January 21 to 24 and then proceeds to state that Bangladesh needs to proceed with caution since China is laying emphasis on geopolitics. It is undeniable that the West, the US in particular, has expansive support and cooperation for the present government. So, it would not be prudent for Bangladesh to take any such step that may go against the countrys interests. The first major aspect this statement highlights is the keenness of the Chinese to have the Bangladeshi official on their soil the day Donald Trump takes over as US President (it will still be January 20 in the US when Mr Hossain meets officials in Beijing on January 21). China has thus wasted no time to work on its strategic interests in Bangladesh. The second aspect is the tacit admission in Bangladesh of the role of the US or Americas Deep State in orchestrating the fall of Sheikh Hasinas government. Sheikh Hasina herself had called out the role of the US in her ouster, but the US had denied the allegations. The statement of the US was one that not many believed anyway. However, Mr Trump is a Yunus baiter since Grameen America, that Mr Yunus chaired in 2016, gave almost $250,000 to the Clinton Foundation when Hillary Clinton contested for President against Mr Trump. Mr Hossains visit to Beijing is at the invitation of Wang Yi, the Chinese foreign minister. During the visit, China is likely to have geopolitics uppermost on its mind and use the changed political circumstances (and the consequent anti-India sentiments) in Bangladesh to forge closer ties. After Mr Yunus takeover in August last year, 12 Chinese companies have invested $210 million in Bangladesh, which is much higher than at any other time in five months! China wants to use this opportunity to build closer relations with Bangladesh by making it a zero-sum game against India. Thereby also hangs a tale that despite a US-supported administration now in Dhaka, the Chinese have no qualms on capitalising on the opportunity! Earlier, Mr Yunus had met the Chinese foreign minister on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September last year, when they discussed matters of bilateral and strategic interest. It is disconcerting, however, that India-Bangladesh relations have come under stress since the political changeover in Bangladesh. There have been a series of provocations for India that includes attacks on Hindus, vandalism and desecration of temples (both claimed as exaggerated by Mr Yunus and his officials), revival of the Jamaat-e-Islami and other radicals, seeking the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, threats to annex parts of India by a close Yunus aide, seeking strategic ties and resolution of the 1971 grievances with Pakistan, the docking of MV Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan , a Chinese-owned merchant vessel with Pakistani cargo (part of which was questionable cargo), which was a first since 1971, easing the visa regime on Pakistan citizens, agreeing to a Pakistani proposal for joint training of the Pakistan and Bangladesh armies in Bangladesh, seeking the supply of Pakistani Hatf-II short-range missiles, increasing the import of ammunition from Pakistan, deployment of Bayraktar TB2 drones on the Indian border, reports of Bangladesh security agencies aiding the formation of two new ethnic militant outfits in Tripura, the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das (the Iskcon priest), attempts to rewrite history by downplaying Indias role in the liberation of Bangladesh, threats to downsize Indias trade surplus, alleging that power tariff rates of Indian companies as too high, are among those that stand out. At a seminar recently in Bangladesh, Mr Hossain had stressed the importance of establishing seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China through Myanmar. The current crisis in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, Bangladeshs only entry point into Myanmar) and the Rohingya crisis in Rakhine state makes that aspiration almost impossible. It is also interesting to note that during a recent interaction with the media, Mr Hossain had described his forthcoming visit to China as part of Dhakas ongoing efforts to maintain balanced relations with China, alongside the United States and India. However, will Mr Hossains four-day-long visit to China balance Bangladeshs relations with the US or worsen it under Mr Trumps watch, given his disdain for both Mr Yunus and China? Only time will tell. Are the multiple provocations by the Yunus government actually balancing relations with India? That looks improbable. What is appreciable is the diplomatic and strategic restraint that India has maintained despite all the provocative acts and statements that have come out of Dhaka. That is statesmanship at its best. The undeniable fact is that geography will have the final say in India-Bangladesh relations in times to come is something all governments in Bangladesh will have to come to terms with. The Yunus government, meanwhile, will have its hands full deciding between China (which is more than willing to resurrect the Bangladesh economy, obviously with future costs for Dhaka) and the US (which brought Mr Yunus to power in the first place) before its time runs out.
