FCI launches awareness campaign to educate public about fortified rice

KAKINADA : The Food Corporation of India (FCI) on Monday has launched an awareness campaign in Kakinada district to educate the public about fortified rice and address misconceptions surrounding it. Concerns have arisen among certain sections of the population who mistakenly believe that the fortified rice distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) contains plastic. As a result, some individuals have been removing the fortified kernels during the rice-cleaning process before cooking. To combat these misconceptions, FCI Divisional Manager A Reddi Sekhar has spearheaded awareness initiatives in collaboration with Kakinada Depot Managers SM Altaf Hussain, MVLS Mutyala Rao, Tabinu Tigga, and other FCI staff members. As part of the awareness campaign, FCI officials educate students in government schools about the process of enriching PDS rice with essential nutrients such as Vitamin A, D3, B12, iron, folic acid, iodine, and calcium. The fortified rice kernels (FRKs) are manufactured using broken rice flour with 1112% moisture content, mixed with vitamins and minerals in their chemical state. These nutrients are combined with potable water to form a dough, which is then shaped into rice-like kernels through an extrusion process involving heat and pressure. The fortified rice kernels are blended with regular PDS rice in a 1:100 ratio. The extrusion process ensures the nutrients remain stable and effective, even after cooking methods like boiling or steaming. Production process of fortified rice The process begins by combining rice flour with a nutrient premix and optional binders. Water is added to form a consistent dough, which is passed through an extruder to create rice-like grains. The extruded kernels are then dried using hot air to achieve a moisture content similar to regular rice (1214%) to ensure a long shelf life. International organisations such as World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund (UNICEF) endorse the safety and benefits of fortified rice, which is designed to combat hidden hunger caused by micronutrient deficiencies. Fortified rice promotes overall health, including for individuals with adequate nutrition, by enhancing dietary intake. Underscoring the need for wide usage to tackle malnourishment, governments have subsidised fortified rice and initiated distribution through PDS and school meal programmes such as Mid-Day Meal initiatives. Fortified rice ensures accessibility to vulnerable populations. Through their awareness efforts, FCI aims to dispel myths and promote the consumption of fortified rice as a safe and nutritious solution for public health.

YS Sharmila stages protest in Kadapa, demands action on long-delayed Steel Plant project

KADAPA: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president YS Sharmila Reddy staged a novel protest on Wednesday, offering coconuts in front of the Kadapa Collectorate, demanding the establishment of the long-promised Kadapa Steel Plant. Sharmila, accompanied by Congress leaders, broke coconuts to symbolise their disappointment with the TDP-led NDA government and the previous YSRC government for failing to fulfil their promises. Later, Sharmila, along with a large number of activists, submitted a representation letter to Kadapa District Collector Dr Sreedhar Cherukuri, urging immediate action on the construction of the steel plant. Criticising both the TDP-led NDA government and the previous YSRC regime, Sharmila alleged that they failed to deliver on promises made to the people of Kadapa. She highlighted how foundation stones for the project had been laid multiple times without meaningful progress. With three instances of coconut breaking by two Chief Ministers, the Kadapa Steel Plant project has been reduced to a mere symbolic exercise. It started with Chandrababu Naidu in 2018 and continued with Jagan in 2019 and 2023, but nothing concrete has come out of it, Sharmila said. Taking a dig at Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy, she questioned his inaction. Avinash Reddy has won twice as MP but failed to move the project an inch forward, she said.

Andhra Pradesh to promote generic medicines to ease financial burden, says Health Minister

VIJAYAWADA: The State government is aiming to reduce the financial burden on the poor by increasing access to generic medicines and promoting their usage, said Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav. Accusing the previous YSRC government of neglecting generic medicines, the minister revealed that, of the total sale of medicines worth Rs 10,000 crore in the State, generic medicines account for only 7%. Replying to questions raised by the MLAs, Minister Satya Kumar informed the House that there are only 215 Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the State, while the Union government has established 13,822 Kendras across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra scheme. He stated that there are only 325 generic medical shops in the State, including 215 PM Jan Aushadhi Kendras, 73 Anna Sanjivini stores, and 37 others. Additionally, 34,761 medical shops in the State sell generic medicines alongside branded ones. He attributed the limited public awareness of generic medicines to the fact that private doctors rarely prescribe them. To address this, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has initiated measures to encourage young entrepreneurs to establish Jan Aushadhi Kendras as part of an employment generation programme. The State government is also simplifying the licensing process by issuing licences for generic medical shops within 15 days and ensuring the supply of 560 types of medicines across the State. Furthermore, the minister outlined plans to establish generic medical stores at all Community Health Centres (CHCs), Area Hospitals, District Hospitals, and 17 teaching hospitals. Awareness programmes supported by Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) will also bolster government efforts to promote the use of generic medicines. He emphasised that government doctors primarily prescribe generic medicines, with branded ones reserved for emergencies.

Jagan accuses Naidu of spreading misinformation

VIJAYAWADA: YSRC president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his associates of systematically spreading misinformation to mislead the public and divert attention from their governance failures. Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday, Jagan claimed the campaign was aimed at covering up the governments inability to fulfil its key poll promises, including the much-acclaimed Super Six initiatives . The former chief minister alleged that Naidu and his allies, with the support of friendly media, have been inflating figures related to State debt, falsely claiming it to be between Rs 10 lakh crore and Rs 14 lakh crore. The actual debt, as recorded in official documents and the CAG report, is Rs 6.4 lakh crore, Jagan stated, emphasising that his government had demonstrated better financial discipline than Naidus administration from 2014 to 2019, despite dealing with challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic. The Chandrababu Naidu government exceeded the FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management) limits by Rs 28,457 crore, which negatively impacted our term, Jagan alleged. Even so, we have achieved superior performance in terms of compounded annual growth, per capita income, and overall growth rate, he asserted. Jagan further alleged that social media activists highlighting the inefficiencies of Naidus government are being targeted with arrests, physical assaults, and illegal detentions. He criticised the deteriorating law and order situation, claiming that some retired officials are aiding such actions while the police operate under undue influence. Addressing the spread of misinformation, Jagan said the opposition has resorted to baseless allegations on issues ranging from adulteration in Tirupati Laddu and land reforms to roads, power and his family. He also shared a video clip alleging that defamatory posts about YS Sharmila originated from the residence of Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna.

Andhra Pradesh cotton farmers face distress over delayed procurement and price cuts amid harsh weather

GUNTUR: Andhra Pradeshs cotton farmers are grappling with severe distress as delayed procurement and price reductions leave them in financial turmoil. Despite the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) setting up 31 procurement centres across the State, only 20 are currently operational, with the remaining 11 yet to commence the procurement process. Farmers, who faced significant losses in the past two seasons due to fake seeds and declining prices, had hoped for better returns this year. However, heavy rains in recent months have taken a toll on crop quality, further compounding their worries. The government-fixed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cotton stands at Rs 7,521, prompting many farmers to throng the CCI centres in anticipation of fair prices. Unfortunately, high moisture content in the cotton, caused by prolonged rains and winter temperatures, has led CCI officials to reject major quantities of the produce. As per guidelines, moisture levels must range between 8% and 12%, but farmers, unable to properly dry their crops, are finding it difficult to meet this criterion. The rejections are forcing farmers to sell their cotton to middlemen at considerably lower prices. Transporting cotton to the procurement centre costs us over Rs 15,000. If our produce is rejected, these costs double, worsening our financial burden, said K Raghava Rao, a farmer from Medikonduru. Adding to the frustration, farmers in Kurnutula village accused local CCI officials of deliberately delaying procurement by citing server issues and making them wait for hours. They voiced their grievances to Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar during his visit to a procurement centre. In response, the Minister escalated the matter to Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, who has appointed Central Marketing Director Vijay Kuradagi as a special inspection officer to investigate the issue. Farmers are now urging the government to either raise the permissible moisture percentage or procure the cotton at adjusted rates to prevent further exploitation by middlemen and mitigate their mounting losses.

Palakkad couple on overlanding mission to plant one lakh trees in five years

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If one happens to spot a rugged 4x4 camper somewhere in the remote areas of the country, it must probably be Sangeeth, Kavya and their pet dog Drogo planting the seeds of tomorrows forests. When most people prioritise luxury and leisure, this couple from Palakkad has chosen to overland across India in their modified 4x4 SUV with a mission to plant one lakh trees in five years. Their journey Mission Mother Tree is a project towards sustainability, adventure and making a difference. It started as a simple plan leave a living memory in the form of trees across places they visit. It quickly became a full-scale drive. They left the security of their corporate jobs to pursue a life closer to nature. Sangeeth, who was previously a sales and marketing officer, and Kavya, a professional in dairy technology now pursuing research, packed up their lives, outfitted their vehicle and set off on a path that would take them to some of Indias most remote regions. Their goal is to explore responsibly and give back to the earth. Over the past two years, we have covered 45,000 kilometres across the country. Our travels arent just the thrill of overlanding but driven by a sense of purpose. We have successfully planted over 10,000 native saplings across the remote regions of India, with the help of a growing community of 4,000 volunteers who joined through social media and the acquaintances between travels, Sangeeth told TNIE. Their Instagram page lifeonroads_ is where they document their journey, and it has crossed over 2.4 lakh followers. To keep their journey sustainable and affordable, Sangeeth and Kavya transformed their Force Gurkha SUV into a camper, all for just Rs 20,000. All the work on the camper was completed by their IT friends group. The couple prepare their meals on the road, sharing their experiences with their companion, Drogo, who is as much a part of the adventure as they are. The couple relies on locally sourced seed balls, which they gather with the help of volunteers from the areas they visit. This ensures that the plants are suited to the local soil and climate, increasing the chances of survival. Their saplings span ten varieties of native trees, and they have achieved a 60% survival rate. For Kavya, the journey is about creating something lasting. One lakh trees may seem like a drop in the bucket against climate change, but were doing the best we can to build a community that values life on this planet, Kavya said. Not only do they plant these saplings but also keep track of their growth through an application, Tree Tag. Each sapling they plant is tagged and tracked using GPS coordinates via the app Tree Tag. Like a live report card, volunteers across the country too regularly update the couple on the progress of these plants. We note down the GPS coordinates of each tree we plant and track it through Tree Tag. It is a collective effort that wouldnt have been possible without the support of the people, Sangeeth said. In Kerala alone, they have planted around 300 saplings in Palakkad, 220 in Munnar, and 70 in Ernakulam. And each time they return to their home base, they plant a batch of seed balls nearby to keep a part of their mission close to home. They have travelled to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. They deviate to remote areas and camp there.Planning this mission often takes more time than the execution, Kavya said.

Move for High Court bench at Kurnool gains momentum

Kurnool: Amid protests by advocates against the proposed shifting of legal bodies like Lokayukta and AP State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) from Kurnool to Amaravati, a letter from the law secretary of the state to registrar general of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, dated October 28, has gone viral on social media. The letter requests the registrar general to follow up with Government of India regarding the establishment of an AP High Court bench in Kurnool. The demand for such a bench in Kurnool stems from lack of proper conveyance between Kurnool and Amaravati. While the previous government temporarily appeased local sentiments by shifting some legal bodies from Vijayawada and Hyderabad to Kurnool, the larger demand for a High Court bench remained unaddressed. On November 14, the government's advocate informed the High Court on the planned relocation of institutions like Lokayukta and APSHRC to Amaravati. The announcement sparked widespread dissatisfaction, prompting local advocates to boycott court activities from November 19, despite industries minister T.G. Bharath's reassurances that no such proposals exist. Advocates countered, citing the government advocate's statement as the basis for their ongoing protests. The letter dated October 28 that has gone viral on social media states that as per the Chief Minister's assurance during the Praja Galam programme, action needs to be taken to establish a High Court bench at Kurnool. It points out that there are similar arrangements in other states, where high courts have benches in different locations to enhance accessibility to people. Their examples include Madras High Courts bench at Madurai, Bombay High Courts benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad, and the Guwahati High Court's multiple benches in north-eastern states. Rayalaseema, with a population of 1.59 crore, accounts for over 25 per cent of AP's population. The state government argues that absence of direct train services between Kurnool and Vijayawada and the significant share of High Court cases originating from the region justify the creation of a bench. The letter, signed by law secretary V. Sunitha, highlighted these points while underscoring the need for the Chief Justice of the High Court to approve the proposal and for the High Court to pursue the matter with the Government of India. The agitating advocates have welcomed the state government's move. But they have vowed to continue their agitation against the proposed relocation of legal institutions to Amaravati. Senior advocates Jayaraju and Balaram emphasised their commitment to the cause, stating that their movement will persist until the government officially announces its decision to establish the bench and ensure retention of the existing legal bodies in Kurnool. Jayaraju and Balaram questioned why the government had not released the letter earlier, especially when there has been a longstanding demand for establishment of the High Court bench in Kurnool.

Andhra Pradesh: TIDCO Housing Issues to Be Solved Soon, Says Minister

Vijayawada: Municipal Administration P. Narayana has promised to resolve the issues of TIDCO houses and their beneficiaries soon. Replying to questions from Tirumala Naidu and Duvvarapu Rama Rao in the legislative council here on Wednesday, the minister said the previous government had raised loans of Rs 5,546.48 crore from various agencies. But it reduced the number for construction of TIDCO houses to 2,61,660 houses even as the states first Telugu Desam government had obtained permission from the Centre for construction of seven lakh houses. That time, the TD government had given administrative sanction for the erection of five lakh houses, he said. Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, he said, had ordered construction of TIDCO houses on the lines of gated communities and use of high-end technology for these constructions during the 2014-19m term. We constructed houses with the main door with teak wood and provided a stainless steel sink and other amenities. However, the next government created hurdles in the scheme. He said the government was expected to give back Rs 349 crore to 2, 61,590 beneficiaries as the YSRC government had promised to reduce the quantum of payment to the government for sanction of houses. Though 77,606 beneficiaries availed bank loans of Rs 2,275.24 crore, some 40,571 beneficiaries were not allotted the houses. Meanwhile, the bankers were asking the beneficiaries to pay their EMIs for the loan availed. The minister said the contractors bills worth Rs 540 crore were pending while the YSR Congress government spent Rs 300 crore to change the colours of the TIDCO houses. Now, it would cost Rs 5,200 crore to develop amenities at the TIDCO houses, he told the legislative council.

Naidu should continue as CM for another decade: Pawan

Amaravati : Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Wednesday wished for TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu to continue as the chief minister of the state for another decade, considering his experience, guidance and visionary foresight for achieving USD 1 trillion GSDP. Asserting that he has 'complete' faith in Naidu, especially after seeing his governance over the first 150 days of the new NDA regime, the deputy CM highlighted that the southern state will become a USD 1 trillion economy 'soon'. I am telling the chief minister (Naidu), not just five years, you have to continue as the CM of this state for a decade. You have to continue this spirit, said Kalyan while addressing the assembly and added that USD 1 trillion amounts to Rs 7.65 lakh crore. At a time when the erstwhile YSRCP government had allegedly devastated Andhra Pradesh and 'took back the state government in all fields', the actor-politician said that Naidu is needed for the state to 'race' towards achieving the USD 1 trillion economy. Calling on his Cabinet colleagues to work towards fulfilling the CM's vision and dreams in their respective portfolios, Kalyan appealed to Naidu to issue orders as to what they should do at all times. Further, he thanked the CM wholeheartedly for his speech on the first 150 days of the government and noted that it instilled immense encouragement and faith in him for the future.

Welfare, development, good governance, key pillars of NDA in AP: CM Naidu

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday emphasised that welfare, development, and good governance are the key pillars of the NDA government in the state. Addressing the Assembly, Naidu pledged to ebuild the state, which he alleged was devastated under the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government from 2019 to 2024. I will accept the challenges and move forward to rebuild the state, brick by brick. Nothing can be achieved overnight, Naidu said, marking 162 days of the TDP-led NDA government, which includes the BJP and Jana Sena party. The CM said his administration is focused on reforming departments and assured citizens that the trust placed in him will not be in vain. Highlighting the government's welfare initiatives, Naidu said Anna Canteens, which provide subsidised meal to the poor, have been launched in 198 locations. Additionally, 42.4 lakh people have benefitted from the Deepam2 scheme, which offers three free cooking gas cylinders annually. Vowing to ensure housing for all, Naidu asserted, There should not be a single person in the state without a housing plot in the next five years. He stressed that the government is committed to balancing welfare and development, with income generated from development funding welfare programmes. Observing that Andhra Pradesh has a low urban population and the least per capita income in South India, Naidu said the state would have been in a stronger position had the greenfield capital city of Amaravati been completed. He said that the central government has agreed to provide Rs 15,000 crore for the construction of Amaravati, with work scheduled to commence in December. Naidu expressed gratitude for the Centre's complete cooperation in the project.

INTERVIEW|Kudankulam Plant expansion not an alternative to a new power plant in Kerala, says expert

INDORE: Nuclear scientist and Director of Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology Unmesh D Malshe said in an interview with TNIE, that the expansion of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant will not serve as an alternative to a potential new plant in Kerala. He also said that setting up a nuclear power plant could help address Kerala's power deficit and meet energy demands in neighbouring states. Excerpts from the interview: Recently, there have been discussions between NPCI and KSEB regarding the possibility of setting up a nuclear power plant in Kerala. Any update on this? The discussions are ongoing, but nothing has been sanctioned yet. Kerala is exploring the option, which is positive. I believe it's crucial to have as many locations as possible for nuclear plants across states, as this will contribute to the country's overall energy capacity. Currently, India's installed nuclear capacity is around 9 gigawatts, but we aim to reach 21 gigawatts by 2030, so expanding nuclear energy is definitely a priority. Reports suggest Athirapally and Cheemeni have been identified as potential sites. Can you comment on their feasibility? If these locations meet the safety criteria set by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), they could be viable. Site selection committees take into account factors like landslide risks and flooding. A site will only be cleared if it meets stringent guidelines, so there's a robust system in place to ensure safety. I can't comment on the specific sites, but I'm sure the committee has considered all the necessary aspects. There has also been discussion about expanding the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Could this be a better alternative? Kudankulam already has plans for six units, each generating 1000 MW, so it's already playing a role in our nuclear capacity. While it's good to expand existing sites, there's no harm in developing more locations across the country. We need to significantly increase our nuclear capacity to meet future energy demands and to contribute to the goal of net-zero emissions. Kudankulam helps, but more plants are needed. What impact would a nuclear power plant in Kerala have on the state's power generation? A nuclear power plant in Kerala would meet the state's own energy needs and could potentially supply neighboring states like Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh. Nuclear plants provide baseload power, which is essential for consistent energy supply to both households and industries. With a nuclear plant, Kerala would not only ensure self-sufficiency but also contribute to the regional power grid. What are the factors to consider when setting up a nuclear power plant in place like Kerala? The most important factor is access to a reliable water source. Nuclear plants use water for cooling, so proximity to a large water body is ideal. While it's possible to build in landlocked areas using cooling towers, being near water is more efficient. Safety and stability of the site are also crucial, and nuclear plants won't be built in areas prone to earthquakes or other natural disasters. With an increasing population, how will power demands evolve, and why is nuclear energy important? By 2070, India's population is expected to exceed 1.5 billion, and power demand will grow exponentially. Currently, our per capita electricity consumption is far lower than in developed nations. To support economic growth and improve the Human Development Index, we need to double our current capacity. Nuclear power plants, being efficient and capable of providing baseload power, are essential to meet these future demands. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are being heavily promoted. Why should Kerala still consider nuclear power? While renewable energy is important, it's intermittent. Solar and wind aren't always available, especially during peak demand at night. Nuclear energy provides a consistent baseload power, which is crucial for industries that require a constant energy supply. Over time, as we phase out coal to meet environmental goals, nuclear energy will play a central role in filling the gap. Waste disposal is a major concern for nuclear power. How is nuclear waste currently being managed, and is it a risk? There's a lot of misconception about nuclear waste. Yes, it's hazardous, but when managed properly, it's safe. We follow a closed fuel cycle, where spent fuel is reprocessed and reused, minimising waste. The small amount of waste that's generated is stored in a solid, glassified form in secure facilities. Unlike other countries that adopt an open fuel cycle and dump waste, India is developing long-term solutions, including advanced reactor technologies to reduce waste further. What about the impact of nuclear plants on local communities, particularly in terms of displacement? Land displacement is always a concern, but nuclear plants are designed with an exclusion zone for safety, which isn't much larger than that required for coal plants. In many cases, these projects bring economic benefits to local communities through employment and development opportunities. It's important to approach displacement with sensitivity and to ensure that those affected benefit from the project. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact on marine life. How significant is this issue? While heat dissipation into nearby water bodies does occur, the impact is generally localized and doesn't extend far beyond the plant. The sea is a vast resource, and the heat released is minimal in comparison to the volume of water. Studies show that this has a limited effect on marine ecosystems, and regulatory bodies ensure that safety standards are met to minimize any potential harm

Couple gives away baby girl to AP couple due to poverty

BERHAMPUR: Battling acute poverty, a couple of Rayagada allegedly gave away their nine-day-old child to a family from Andhra Pradesh, in Nuapada Sahi village under Chandili police limits of the district. Even as the alleged baby sale incident in Balangir hogged the headlines, the Rayagada story has now come as another shocker. A notarised deed of adoption which facilitated the childs change of custody said it was carried out without any force, fraud, coercion and influence. The deed, however, was severely flawed. The natural mother Kumud Ganta (22) and her husband Rahul Dhanbadi (25), a driver by profession, allegedly gave away the newborn girl to a couple from Pedapenki village in Andhra Pradesh on November 11, nine days after her birth on November 3. On the day, the Rayagada district child Protection unit, along with social worker Satyapriya Pradhan visited the family and enquired about the incident. The child welfare committee (CWC) and the Women and Child Development (WCD) department also began a probe. We had information the baby was sold off. This, however, appears to be a case of illegal adoption caused by poverty. We are instructing the couple (from Andhra Pradesh) to present the child before the CWC. If the natural parents cannot take care of the baby, they must hand her over to the government, said Pradhan. Kumud claimed since her family does not have a ration card, it was deprived of PDS rice and other government benefits. The 22-year-old said acute poverty forced her to stay at her brothers house and buy rice from outside. My baby was not sold off. We gave her away because of our inability of raise the kid. The family adopted her, she said. Due to financial constraints, Rahul said, it was difficult on his part to manage the family with two children. Thats why I agreed to give away my newborn, he added. The source said, a woman of Kottapeta village in neighbouring AP came to know of Kumuds family and made the move for the alleged adoption. The woman frequents the Chandili area. When Kumud shared her familys hardships, the woman suggested they hand over the newborn to a childless relative of her. Accordingly, a deed of adoption was prepared in Rayagada. The natural parents of the infant and the couple from AP have been asked to be present before CWC on Wednesday.
