25 wagons of freight train derail on KottavalasaKirandul railway section in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR: Train services were affected on the KottavalasaKirandul (KK) railway section under Waltair division of East Coast Railway (ECoR) after 25 wagons of a freight train derailed while passing through a tunnel on Wednesday afternoon. Railway sources said the iron-ore laden freight train en-route from Koraput to Visakhapatnam went off the tracks near Chimidipalli in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, possibly due to some issues with the tracks. Although no casualties have been reported, the derailment severely disrupted movement of trains on the route, which is predominantly a freight line used for transportation of minerals and industrial goods. Some passenger trains that pass through the route between Visakhapatnam and Kirandul have been diverted via Vizianagaram and Rayagada. An emergency response team rushed to the site to assess the situation and restore the tracks. Since the derailment took place inside a tunnel and the section falls under a hilly terrain, sources said, restoration work is expected to take several hours. Intermittent rain in the region under the influence of a low pressure area may further delay removal of wagons and the restoration process. Confirming the derailment, ECoR in a statement said 25 wagons of a goods train derailed near Chimidipalli at 1.05 pm in the ArakuKottavalasa section under Waltair division. A relief train has been promptly dispatched to undertake restoration operations. Senior railway officials are present at the site to assess the situation and monitor the restoration work. Resources mobilisation are on in full swing to ensure swift restoration, it said. Earlier, three wagons of a goods train had derailed near Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district on January 20. Similarly, four wagons of a goods train had derailed near Kantabanji station under Sambalpur railway division under ECoR on June 1, last year.

Menstrual hygiene still a distant dream for many schoolgirls in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh
VIJAYAWADA: On Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, the stark reality of adolescent girls in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana highlights that the lack of access to sanitary pads, clean toilets, and menstrual education continues to affect their health and education. Nithya(name changed), a teenager from Nelaturu village in Andhra Pradesh, was caught off guard by her first period. Her parents, both agricultural labourers, could offer little guidance. Siri (name changed), from Machara village, echoed similar struggles, feeling confused and isolated during menstruation due to prevailing taboos and a lack of information. These are not isolated stories. A recent study by Child Rights and You (CRY)- South, a Banglore based NGO conducted across 109 schools and hostels in six districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, revealed deep-rooted gaps in menstrual hygiene management. Of the 370 toilets designated for girls, only 108 were in usable condition. Most lacked water, soap, or proper waste disposal, forcing girls to avoid them entirely. Only 43 institutions stocked sanitary napkins, the rest had no provisions, leaving girls with little choice but to use unhygienic alternatives or skip school altogether. Girls are missing up to four school days a month due to the lack of menstrual support, said John Roberts, Regional Director, CRY South. This cumulative absenteeism affects academic performance and increases dropout risks, especially among girls from marginalised communities. Menstrual hygiene is closely linked to adolescent girls education, health, and dignity. Yet, despite schemes like the central government's Menstrual Hygiene Scheme and Andhra Pradeshs 'Swechha' programme, implementation remains weak. Launched in 2021, 'Swechha' aimed to distribute free sanitary napkins to nearly 10 lakh girls in government schools and colleges every month. However, the scheme has not seen consistent follow-through after its inaugural year. Telangana has made similar efforts. In 2022, it allocated Rs. 69.5 crore to distribute sanitary pads in government institutions and provided health kits to 11 lakh adolescent girls. But sustained, on-the-ground implementation and infrastructure development remain major hurdles. The National Family Health Survey-5 (201921) reveals that 64% of Indian girls aged 1519 use sanitary napkins, up from 42% in the previous survey. However, nearly half still rely on cloth or other alternatives, especially in rural areas where awareness and affordability are lower. In urban India, hygienic product usage stands at 90%, compared to 73% in rural regions. Menstrual health cannot be addressed through product distribution alone, said Roberts. We need sustained education, clean infrastructure, and open conversations to dismantle the shame and stigma surrounding periods. One of the most alarming findings from CRYs study is the silence around menstruation. More than half of the girls surveyed were unaware of menstruation before their first period. Teachers, who could be key sources of information, were the least cited. Most girls learned about it from their mothers or peers, perpetuating myths and fears. Recognising this gap, CRY has formed Adolescent Girls Collectives (AGCs) in multiple villages across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. These safe spaces allow girls to openly discuss menstrual hygiene, receive guidance, and demand better facilities. Through these collectives, girls like Nithya have transformed from being overwhelmed by menstruation to becoming menstrual health advocates in their communities. Siri said, Before joining the collective, I felt embarrassed during my periods. Now, I speak to my friends about hygiene and help them access pads. The central governments announcement in November 2024 of a comprehensive Menstrual Hygiene Policy for schoolgirls is a welcome move. The policy aims to integrate menstrual education in schools, improve access to sanitary products, and establish safe disposal mechanisms. Yet, the success of such initiatives depends on execution at the grassroots. Toilets must be clean and functional. Sanitary pads must be available regularly. And most importantly, the silence around menstruation must be broken in classrooms, staff rooms, and communities. As India marks another Menstrual Hygiene Day, its clear that a pad, a toilet, and a conversation can change the future for millions of girls. But only if we ensure that policies turn into practices, in every school, in every village.

50k farm ponds built so far in Andhra; ASR, Parvathipuram lead drive
VIJAYAWADA: The State government, which aimed to complete 1.55 lakh farm ponds, has so far constructed 50,000, with Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR), Parvathipuram Manyam, and Annamayya districts leading the progress. According to Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Commissioner VR Krishna Teja, 7,566 farm ponds were completed in the ASR district, 6,317 in Parvathipuram Manyam, and 5,181 in Annamayya district. Calling farm ponds the Sanjeevani of agriculture, Krishna Teja said that they enable the cultivation of crops like papaya, banana, guava, and curry leaves. Fish farming is also possible in them, he added. As the State is experiencing pre-monsoon rains, the commissioner urged farmers to grow vegetables along the pond bunds to earn additional income. He said seeds for vegetables and leafy greens are being distributed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Commissioner noted that each pond can store up to 1.80 lakh litres of water, and collectively, the planned 1.55 lakh ponds can hold nearly 1 TMC of water. Built at no cost to farmers under the MGNREGS, each pond saves about Rs 50,000 in construction expenses.
AP High Court raps police for intervening in civil dispute cases
VIJAYAWADA: In a significant ruling, the High Court has sharply criticised police interference in civil disputes, particularly those related to land issues, stating that they have no authority to intervene in such matters. The HC clarified that civil disputes between individuals should be resolved through civil courts under the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC) or through statutory bodies like the State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, and Mandal Legal Services Authority. The court emphasised that police attempts to resolve civil disputes under initiatives like the Pre-Litigation Counselling Forum (PLCF) create confusion among parties and may escalate conflicts. The HC explicitly directed Visakhapatnam police to refrain from interfering in civil cases under any pretext. In a related case, 74-year-old S Shyamala from Visakhapatnams Bay Colony approached the High Court, alleging harassment by the Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police (CP), who repeatedly summoned her in connection with a civil land dispute. Shyamala sought court intervention to prevent police from pressuring her to resolve the dispute outside the legal framework. During the hearing, her counsel, Vattikuti Suryanarayana, argued that Shyamala was being coerced by police under the guise of the PLCF to settle her ongoing civil dispute with Venkata Satya Naga Krishnamraju Gopalaraju and Venkata Satyanarayana Raju. The police, in response, claimed they invite parties for counselling under the PLCF to resolve disputes, but their participation is voluntary. They stated that since Shyamala did not attend counselling, the case was closed, and neither the Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police nor the Bheemunipatnam police had any further role. However, Justice Lakshmana Rao condemned the polices conduct, ruling that police have no authority to intervene in such matters or attempt to resolve them through forums like the PLCF. The High Court also addressed similar issues in Prakasam and Palnadu districts. In Prakasam, the Mundlamuru police were criticised for pressuring a petitioner to withdraw a civil suit filed in a civil court. Similarly, in Palnadu, Narsaraopet police were directed to stop intimidating a petitioner into withdrawing a civil suit filed in a lower court. The court firmly instructed the police in both districts to refrain from interfering in civil disputes or pressuring parties to withdraw legal cases.

Dy CM Pawan calls for stringent monitoring of cinema halls management in AP
VIJAYAWADA: Deputy Chief Minister and actor-politician Pawan Kalyan has called for stringent oversight in the management of cinema halls across the state to ensure better services for moviegoers. In a review meeting with Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh and other senior officials, he issued key directives regarding the regulation of cinema ticket pricing, food item costs within theatres, and the recent cinema hall bandh issue that has rocked the Telugu film industry. Pawan Kalyan made it clear that the government departments concerned must regularly monitor cinema halls operations to maintain standards. Emphasizing a structured process for ticket price hikes, he directed that producers should apply for permission through the Telugu Film Industry Council rather than approaching the government in an individual capacity. This directive gains significance in the context of the upcoming release of Harihara Veeramallu, for which ticket price hikes have been requested. The Deputy Chief Minister was unequivocal in stating that personal affiliations or political differences must not influence administrative decisions. A major concern discussed in the meeting was the soaring prices of food items like popcorn, soft drinks, and bottled water in cinema halls, often higher than the actual ticket prices. Pawan Kalyan directed officials to routinely inspect the pricing and quality of these items. He stressed that the monopoly of certain vendors in both multiplexes and single-screen theatres has come to the governments notice. To curb this, he suggested that Minister Durgesh initiate a thorough inquiry into these practices. Reduced food prices attract larger moviegoers and boost tax revenue He added that such pricing deters families from frequenting cinema halls and observed that reduced food prices could attract larger audiences, indirectly boosting tax revenues. He urged the Tax Department to take this into consideration and called for local bodies to ensure that basic amenities such as drinking water and sanitation are being provided in all cinema halls. The controversial cinema hall bandh in the Telugu film industry also came under discussion. The initial bandh call reportedly came from East Godavari district and has since led to widespread speculation and confusion within the industry. Minister Durgesh provided a status update on the investigation into the bandh and the alleged involvement of key figures. Adding to the controversy, a producer had claimed in front of the media that a leader from the Jana Sena Party was instrumental in the bandh call. Pawan Kalyan responded firmly, instructing the Minister to investigate all angles, including allegations involving members of his own party. He emphasized that no individual or group, including Jana Sena members, should be exempt from action if found responsible for creating unrest in the industry. The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to fostering a healthy, transparent environment for the Telugu film industry. He stated that industry bodies such as the Telugu Film Industry Council, Producers Council, Movie Artists Association, and Directors Associations would be kept in the loop on government decisions. These organisations, he said, must be involved in the formulation of the Comprehensive Film Development Policy being prepared by the Andhra Pradesh government. Pawan Kalyan assured that the government will promote the film sector without tolerating practices that involve threats to producers, actors, or directors. He concluded by asserting that any suggestion aimed at the growth and betterment of the industry would be welcomed.
TDPs Mahanadu kicks off with massive turnout; attendees served traditional delicacies
KADAPA: The city of Kadapa was awash in yellow as thousands of TDP leaders and workers gathered at Mahanadu being held at the Pabbapuram layout. The three-day event kicked off in a grand manner with cultural performances, traditional music, and a massive turnout of delegates from across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and beyond. On Day 1, the TDP held its Representative Council Meeting, drawing immense crowds that led to traffic congestion along Kadapas 36 km ring road connecting Rayachoti, Kamalapuram, Pulivendula, Proddatur and Rajampet. Vehicles were lined up bumper-to-bumper, and police had to work hard to control the traffic. Despite the chaos, no major incidents were reported. Intermittent rains across Rayalaseema in recent days had turned the Mahanadu grounds muddy, causing concern among organisers. However, Tuesday morning brought a break from the rain, much to the relief of leaders and volunteers. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu remarked that Mahanadu is usually held in the peak of summer, making this years cooler weather particularly welcome. Adding a symbolic moment to the event, Naidu formally registered himself as a representative of Chittoor Parliamentary constituency at the Mahanadu venue. He paid floral tributes to the NTR statue, hoisted the party flag. A major highlight of Mahanadu was the food. Over 1.5 lakh attendees were served traditional delicacies from Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana, with more than 30 varieties prepared, including non-vegetarian items for the first time in many years. The culinary effort involved 1,700 cooks and 88 serving staff. Meals included breakfast, lunch, snacks and desserts. The first day also saw the approval of several key resolutions. TDP leaders hailed the governments initial achievements in its first year, especially the accelerated work on irrigation projects and the decentralisation of development through Amaravati. Other resolutions focused on public safety, Naidus welfare and growth vision, and future governance strategies. Holding Mahanadu at Kadapa tribute to party cadre: CM Naidu
Holding Mahanadu at Kadapa tribute to party cadre: CM Naidu
KADAPA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday dedicated the partys success in last years elections (93% strike rate and over 57% vote share) to the unwavering sacrifices of the party workers. The Telugu Desam Party national president inaugurated the three-day annual party conclave Mahanadu in Kadapa on Tuesday. Addressing the party cadre, Naidu said, Holding Mahanadu at the divine doorstep of Kadapa after our historic win in seven out of ten seats in this district, reflects the passion our cadre continue to exhibit even a year after the polls. Calling the 2024 electoral victory extraordinary, Naidu credited party workers for their relentless commitment. With a 93% strike rate and over 57% vote share, our performance is historic. The credit belongs to the grassroots warriors who kept the TDP flag flying high despite severe oppression. He recalled the repressive atmosphere of the previous YSRCP government, condemning its culture of vendetta, false cases, and political murders. Our workers fought bravely, even when their lives were at risk. Their sacrifices brought the alliance to power. Mahanadu is our tribute to them. Naidu emphasized that no other political party has had as profound an influence on public life as the TDP. From ending the Patel-Patwari system to empowering women through DWCRA, from Rs 2/kg rice to Rs 4,000 pensions, from education reforms to IT exports TDPs legacy is one of transformative governance. TDP is not just a political party, it is a trendsetter, he said, highlighting contributions such as infrastructure development, girl child education, womens property rights, and drip irrigation subsidies for Rayalaseema farmers. TDPs policies became blueprint for other parties He reiterated the partys commitment to clean governance, visionary planning, and positive politics. While in opposition, we fought against corruption. In power, we have delivered transparent administration. Our governance model continues to set benchmarks. TDPs policies have become a blueprint for other political parties across India, Naidu declared. He cited the partys pioneering role in social justice, particularly in empowering Backward Classes (BCs) with political representation long before it became a national priority. He also emphasised the partys institutional strength, with over one crore members, and its influence in shaping key national policies from power reforms to public-private partnership (PPP) models and decentralisation. Touching on the TDPs anti-corruption stance, Naidu pointed to past exposes, including the Obulapuram illegal mining case, land scams in Visakhapatnam and Kadapa, and land deals around Hyderabads Outer Ring Road (ORR) all of which have since been legally validated. The people have punished the corrupt regime. We now bear the responsibility to deliver justice through due process. Reflecting on the coalition governments first year in office, Naidu outlined achievements such as restoring law and order, boosting public morale, launching welfare schemes, and reviving investor confidence. We scrapped the land-grabbing act, issued DSC notifications, expanded pensions to 64 lakh people, and increased honorariums for priests, imams, and pastors. We are rebuilding the state brick by brick, with support from the Centre and our alliance partners the BJP and Jana Sena. From NTRs dream of irrigation to todays policy-driven growth, TDP has always prioritised Rayalaseemas upliftment, Naidu added. He announced that the party had received Rs 22.53 crore in donations in a single day, following an appeal by Nara Lokesh regarding the partys financial constraints. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donors. Top contributors included Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy- Rs 5 crore, P Narayana - Rs 1 crore, TG Bharath-Rs 1 crore, TANA Satish -Rs 1 crore, BC Janardhan Reddy-Rs 1.5 crore, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy-Rs 1 crore and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy- Rs 1.5 crore. Naidu assured that these donations would be used for party operations and welfare of grassroots workers. Highlighting the legislative vision, he stated that the six bills proposed by Nara Lokesh have the potential to reshape Andhra Pradeshs history. He emphasized the TDPs inclusive leadership model, involving both village-level and state-level leaders, and promised fair opportunities based on performance.
TDP marks 43 years with six-point agenda; pledges 20 lakh jobs, farmer, women support
KADAPA: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), marking 43 years of its journey, unveiled a transformative agenda to meet the evolving aspirations of the Telugu people. At the partys annual Mahanadu convention in Kadapa, TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh addressed thousands of delegates, and laid out six key resolutions aimed at shaping a progressive and inclusive future for Andhra Pradesh. Times are changing, and so must we, said Lokesh, stressing that while the TDP continues to stand firmly on the ideals laid down by party founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR), it is ready to adapt with vision and purpose for the next four decades. Reflecting on the partys highs and lows over 43 years, Lokesh noted, Whether in power or opposition, the TDP has always stood by the people. He called on the party to remain resilient, reform-ready, and people-centric. Lokesh urged all party members to unite behind the six resolutions. These are not just policies - they are our commitment to a better future for the Telugu people, he asserted. Global Telugu identity: The TDP pledged to champion a unified Telugu identity, one of the six resolutions, beyond caste and region, drawing on the legacy of NTR and TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidus global outreach. Youth empowerment: Emphasising merit over hierarchy, Lokesh vowed to continue creating employment and industrial growth, aiming for 20 lakh job opportunities through strategic investments. Women empowerment: Reiterating the partys commitment to gender equity, Lokesh promised increased safety, representation, and leadership roles for women both in public life and within the party. Pro-poor social re-engineering: Under the P4 concept, the TDP aims to eradicate poverty with innovative welfare measures focused on essentials, housing, pensions, and targeted support for backward communities. Support for farmers: Declaring farmers as the backbone of the nation, Lokesh reaffirmed the partys resolve to ensure financial stability, irrigation and market support. Cadre empowerment: Honouring the grassroots workers, Lokesh emphasised that in TDP, the worker is the real leader. TDP gets Rs 17 cr donations TDP leaders and supporters have collectively donated over Rs 17 crore during the Mahanadu convention in Kadapa, reflecting their strong commitment to the party and its social mission. Speaking on the occasion, TDP supremo Naidu expressed gratitude to all the generous donors. He assured that the contributions would not only support party activities but would also be used for the welfare of the poor and TDP workers. Every time Mahanadu is held, we set up a Hundi, and it has become a tradition to spend the collected donations for the needy, Naidu said.
HRD minister Lokesh dismisses urgency for CM post, praises CM Naidu's leadership
KADAPA: TDP general secretary and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh has sought to know what is the urgency for him to take the post of Chief Minister. In an informal interaction with mediapersons on the sidelines of Mahanadu on Tuesday, Lokesh described Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu as a young and dynamic leader. He is of the firm opinion that the nation and the state require the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naidu respectively. In response to a question from reporters that when he is going to be the next Chief Minister, Lokesh said the services of Naidu are immense to AP. On the reports about his elevation as the working president of TDP, Lokesh said he is ready to work in any position if directed by the party high command. In fact, there is no need for positions to serve the people, he observed. Stating that leaders can know the facts through field visits, Lokesh said he came to know the problems of tobacco farmers when he went to console the family of slain TDP leader Veeraiah Chowdary in Ongole. Immediately, I alerted the government machinery and the Group of Ministers to resolve the issue, he said. By giving more priority to governance in the past, there was a gap with the party cadre. However, now the Chief Minister as well as I, while participating in official programmes, are also meeting the party cadre, he said. On the allotment of land to Ursa in Visakhapatnam, he challenged that he is ready to resign in case of proving that land was given at a throwaway price of 99 paise per acre to it, and sought to know whether YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and other leaders making allegations on the issue are ready for it. The development of Vizag will go beyond expectations with the creation of five lakh jobs in the city. The NDA government is taking every initiative for the development of North Andhra. Decentralisation of development is the target of our government, and the establishment of industries in all parts of the State is evident, he highlighted. Stating that he is fortunate to have met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lokesh said Modi gave him several valuable suggestions. During our interaction, the Prime Minister made several useful suggestions, he said. He asserted that industries will not go out of the State as there is no YSRCP government. On the liquor scam, Lokesh said the attitude of Jagan is like a thief crying theft. Asserting that women should be respected in society, Lokesh felt that politicians should change their language because they are being followed by more people in society. I have witnessed the agony of my mother. We are not uttering any objectionable words against the family members of Jagan, and are not sparing in case anyone from our party resorts to criticising women, Lokesh added.

TTD will introduce enhanced surveillance measures along critical stretches of the Alipiri footpath, particularly the 2.5 km stretch from the Seventh Mile to the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple on the Down Ghat Road. Safety equipment includes camera traps, bio-fences, net-guns, high-flash torches, smart sticks, and pepper sprays, with the goal of declaring Alipiri Footpath a No Leopard Zone. The administration will update the approved food list and strictly ban restricted items.
VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh lost 468 hectares of primary forest in 2024, marking a slight increase from the 424 hectares lost in 2023, according to data released by Global Forest Watch (GFW), a coalition of over 100 organisations. The data reveals a fluctuating yet steady trend in forest degradation over recent years, with losses recorded at 193 hectares in 2022, 143 hectares in 2021, 225 hectares in 2020, and 363 hectares in 2019. In 2020, the state had approximately 2.46m hectares of forest, covering nearly 15% of its total land area. However, in 2024 alone, AP lost about 5.73 thousand hectares of natural forest, resulting in an estimated 1.75 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. From 2001 to 2024, the state lost 42.4 thousand hectares of tree cover, representing a 3.8 percent decrease since 2000 and accounting for 23.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. Annual tree cover loss figures for recent years include 2.87 thousand hectares in 2024, 2.96 thousand hectares in 2023, 1.24 thousand hectares in 2022, 854 hectares in 2021, 1.40 thousand hectares in 2020, and 1.90 thousand hectares in 2019. AP 2nd in gaining tree cover during 2000-20 Between 2001 and 2024, 66 per cent of the tree cover loss in AP occurred in areas where deforestation was the dominant driver. Key causes of deforestation include conversion to permanent agriculture (26.8 thousand hectares), expansion of settlements and infrastructure (214 hectares), and hard commodities cover (23 hectares). Temporary disturbances contributing to tree cover loss were logging (1.43 thousand hectares), shifting cultivation (12.7 thousand hectares), wildfires (95 hectares), and other natural disturbances (42 hectares). Two regions in AP accounted for 76 per cent of all tree cover loss between 2001 and 2024, with East Godavari experiencing the highest loss at 16.4 thousand hectares, significantly higher than the average of 3.26 thousand hectares in other areas. Despite the losses, the State recorded a notable gain in tree cover between 2000 and 2020, adding 194 thousand hectares. This increase represents 11 per cent of Indias total tree cover gain during the same period. AP ranked second among Indian states for tree cover gain, behind Karnataka, which gained 222 thousand hectares. Regarding fire incidents, between 2001 and 2024, AP lost 1.39 thousand hectares of tree cover due to fires and 41.0 thousand hectares due to other reasons. The year 2009 saw the greatest tree cover loss due to fires, with 189 hectares lost, accounting for 7.4 percent of all tree cover loss that year.

Will not allow shifting of any PSUs from Karnataka, says Dy CM DK Shivakumar
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the State Government will not allow the shifting of any public sector units (PSU) from Karnataka. I want our parliament members and central ministers to react to it. But, as a government, we will not allow anything to be shifted, Shivakumar told media persons responding to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidus proposal to relocate HAL units from Karnataka and offer to give 10,000 acres of land in AP. I am not going to interfere in Naidus political request to the Centre. We have also given sufficient land to HAL and we have also provided land to set up a helicopter unit in Tumakuru. If they want to expand, we will give them more land. They are free to set up anything new in Andhra Pradesh, we are not going to object to it. But our government will do whatever it takes to protect our states assets, the DyCM said. Terming HAL as Karnatakas pride, the DyCM said former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru set it up in Bengaluru. There is no question of it [shifting], he said. Shivakumar said he expects the parliament members and Union ministers from the state to speak about it. Industries Minister MB Patil had earlier stated that requesting the setting up of a unit in Andhra Pradesh as part of HALs expansion plans is understandable but asking to transfer the existing Bengaluru operations is not justifiable. To my understanding, Naidu may not have asked for shifting Bengaluru operations. He might have only requested the establishment of a new unit there. However, if he has indeed requested the relocation of operations from Bengaluru, that would not be appropriate, Patil said. A new chapter in Congress: Shivakumar said over 50 leaders are quitting the BJP and joining the Congress party. This is a new chapter for Congress in the state, he said. Many BJP and JDS leaders are coming forward to join the party as they think that the Congress government under the leadership of Siddaramaiah is doing a great job of governing the state. We have instructed all the MLAs and district presidents to induct leaders who would like to join our party. I would like to invite all the new leaders to our party. We will take the old and new leaders together, he said.

Kerala invites bids for heli-tourism services to boost high-end travel
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : In a major move to boost high-end tourism and enhance connectivity across destinations, the state government has invited Expression of Interest to operate heli-tourism services in the state. The plan is to enlist certified helicopter service operators and aggregators to provide regular, safe and convenient aerial transport linking key tourist destinations such as Kochi, Thekkady, Munnar, Kumarakom, Vagamon and Bekal. Kerala Tourism came up with this initiative as part of its broader strategy to position the state as a premium tourist destination offering diverse travel experiences, from serene beaches to misty hill stations, all accessible within a single day. A top official with the tourism department told TNIE that the move will not only ease travel times for tourists but also serve emergency, medical, and disaster management needs in the state. Connectivity is a major concern for people visiting the state. People coming for brief vacations are unable to cover more destinations because of travel time. Scores of tourists are arriving in Kochi, but if they want to visit Munnar, it takes a minimum of four to six hours by road. Helicopter services are going to be a game changer and tourists will be able to reach the destination in an hour by spending `5,000 or so per person, the official said. Helicopter services will also benefit pilgrimage tourism by reducing travel time for devotees visiting Sabarimala from distant locations like Andhra Pradesh. This will allow pilgrims to spend more time at the temple or visit other places of interest, the official said. The heli-tourism initiative, launched by the tourism department in December 2023, failed to gain traction initially due to forest departments restrictions and the absence of a clear policy. Additionally, the state had very few service providers. To address these issues, Kerala Tourism formulated a comprehensive heli-tourism policy, which received cabinet approval in December 2024. The department will shortlist the applicants and the presentation of the technical proposals will be held on June 23. There are not many players in the country and we are expecting five to ten operators to take part in the EoI, the official said. The policy outlines plans for the development of heliports, helistations, and support services while mandating compliance with the directorate general of civil aviation and other regulatory bodies. With minimal land use and high efficiency, helicopter services can offer a game-changing experience to tourists and strengthen regional connectivity, the official added.

Countless kitchens, one collection
Sarika Gupta Traditional Indian recipes arent merely meals, but heirlooms of flavour and memory where spices are added by instinct, not by measure, and each dish is perfected over decades of religious practice in kitchens. Collecting and sourcing these recipes from across Indias humble kitchens was a relatively easy task for Sarika Gupta when compared to translating instinct into exactness. But through perseverance, she says, she managed to not only write an entire book with over 100 vegetarian recipes on her phone, but to have her first edition be completely sold out. Now, out with the second edition of 28 States 28 Plates , Sarika says, I spent so many hours in my kitchen, perfecting the measurements and adjusting the taste of each dish. I must have prepared every recipe four to five times. Across the books 375 pages are striking pictures that are well composed, making it seem as though they were professionally shot in a studio. But that wasnt the case. The pictures were neither shot in a studio, nor by a professional. Sarika learnt photography and captured all the 160 dishes by herself, at home. They were all shot on my iphone 13, she declares. From Portuguese-influenced Goan bread called Poee, indigenous produce-based recipes such as Kokum Chutney, cultural hits like Chidambaram Katrikayi Gosthu, to foods that have evolved due to socio-political factors such as the Congress Kadelekayi, 28 States 28 Plates finds a place for them all. I have travelled all over the country and lived in different cities; thanks to my husbands transferable job. I have lived in Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Everywhere I went, I would learn recipes from my neighbours and friends, Sarika says. She had a collection of recipes, put together carefully over 25 years of her life and so, the next natural step for her was to publish these recipes. With the world seeing a voluntary shift to more plant-based, vegetarian diet options, this book finds its place, effortlessly, in terms of rlevance, Sarika adds. Congress Kadelekayi What stands out in this book are a few interesting parts of history that gave birth to distinct dishes. The Congress Kadelekayi (masala peanuts), Sarika writes, were introduced by a bakery owner in Bengaluru to manage losses, after a quota system (rationing) for all-purpose flour was introduced, affecting bakery businesses, during the Congress party declared Emergency period (1975-77). Another recipe the MLA Pesarettu, a dosa with upma filling, is a story served warm. The dish was born inside the canteens of the Legislative Assembly in Hyderabad, she writes. The MLAs would order it off the menu, and it eventually garnered widespread attention, she adds. The collection mainly features familiar dishes from every state, that are more-or-less staple foods. Be it Keralas appam and vegetable stew, Maharashtras dhadpe pohe, Punjabs Amritsari kulcha , or Sikkims momos, the focus has largely remained within the realms of home-cooked recipes. Preserving such recipes, rich in family traditions and cultural significance, are at par with preserving our diverse identity. That also seems to be Sarikas attempt with this cookbook. Pepe Plastic Chatney from West Bengal Ingredients Raw papaya (grated): 1 cup Sugar: cup + 2 tbsp Salt: tsp Nigella seeds: tsp Chilli flakes: tsp Lime juice: 1 tsp Water: cup Cashew nuts/almonds: 8 Method: Grate raw papaya into thick shreds. Keep stirring every 2 minutes and continuously towards the end. The chatney will be ready when the papaya turns transparent and is soft to eat. Remove from heat and add lime juice. Serve with Radhabhallavi, masala pooris, or masala paranthas. Patal ki Chutney from Chattisgarh Ingredients Tomatoes: 2 or 3 nos Green chillies: 2 nos Coriander leaves: a handful Garlic: 4 big cloves Salt: tsp Method: Chop green chillies and tomatoes roughly.
