ONGOLE: Prakasam districts seven Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are eagerly awaiting the release of Adverse Seasonal Condition (ASC) Grants from the State government, crucial for addressing water scarcity amid intensifying summer conditions. The State is expected to release Rs 14.22 crore in ASC Grants, earmarked for emergency water supply management and infrastructure repairs. These include fixing leakages in water pipelines, maintaining pumps and borewells, drilling new ones, and transporting potable water through tankers. The ULBs including, Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC), and the municipalities of Markapur, Kanigiri, Giddalur, Chimakurthy, Darsi, and Podili, submitted their summer water action plans in March 2025. The proposals outlined fund requirements for urgent civic interventions to tide over seasonal challenges. OMC has sought the largest share at Rs 4.40 crore. Giddalur has proposed Rs 3 crore, followed by Kanigiri (Rs 2.6 crore), Podili (Rs 2.2 crore), Markapur (Rs 1.2 crore), Darsi (Rs 55 lakh), and Chimakurthy (Rs 27 lakh). OMC Commissioner Venkateswara Rao expressed confidence in the governments support. We have submitted proposals worth Rs 4.40 crore under the ASC Grants and are hopeful of an early sanction, he said. The prolonged delay in grant disbursal has strained municipal budgets, forcing ULBs to divert general funds towards critical operations, including staff salaries and emergency maintenance. Officials warn that further delay could hamper civic services, particularly water supply. With the TDP-led NDA government prioritising infrastructure, officials remain hopeful that the ASC Grants will be released, enabling timely execution of the summer relief measures. The funds are seen as essential to ensuring uninterrupted civic services during the summer months.

Surprise showers bring respite from heatwave in parts of Andhra Pradesh
VIJAYAWADA: Untimely heavy rains accompanied by gale winds lashed multiple regions of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Sunday. While the showers brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat, they also caused severe damage to crops and disrupted normal life, as several trees were uprooted, resulting in power outages. The sudden downpour, which lasted for at least three hours, inundated several low-lying areas in Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Guntur, and Eluru. In Vijayawada, the intense downpour led to widespread chaos. Major thoroughfares such as Eluru Road and Besant Road were flooded, triggering severe traffic snarls at key junctions like Benz Circle. Low-lying areas were submerged, making it particularly challenging for two-wheeler riders to navigate the waterlogged streets. Municipal officials immediately swung into action, clearing tree debris to bring the situation under control. Damaged electricity poles and snapped power lines caused outages in parts of Vijayawada, Tadepalli, and Guntur. Electricity department personnel worked swiftly to restore power by carrying out necessary repairs. In rural areas, farmers suffered heavy losses as strong winds damaged crops, and some fields were submerged in rainwater. Agriculture department officials are currently assessing crop losses across the three districts. Other districts such as West Godavari, Prakasam, and Tirupati also faced similar disruptions. The sudden deluge threw normal routines into disarray across the state. In Nellore district, two people lost their lives in separate lightning strike incidents in Naidupeta and Ozili mandals. In Ozili mandal, a boy named Karthik was struck by lightning and died while he was in a mango orchard near Gollapalem village. In a separate incident in Naidupeta mandal, a farmer named Alam Bhaskar was fatally struck by lightning while working in his agricultural fields near Vadigunta Kandriga village. Rainwater led to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in Rajamahendravaram, while strong winds uprooted trees in multiple locations in Eluru district. Eluru Collector K Vetri Selvi said revenue and electricity department staff were deployed to remove uprooted trees in Dwaraka Tirumala and other areas. Joint Collector P Dhatri Reddy visited Kovvali village in Denduluru mandal and assured farmers not to panic. Collectors and SPs directed to mitigate rain loss She directed them to transport paddy to mills immediately and instructed farmers service centres to supply tarpaulins and gunny bags to protect the paddy from further rain damage. East Godavari Collector P Prasanti alerted officials and riverside village secretaries to monitor conditions. She said that so far 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of paddy had been procured through 216 farmers service centers in the district. She also instructed officials to install notice boards warning the public against entering bathing ghats. In Prakasam district, rainfall was reported in Chimakurthy, Racharla, Komarolu, Pullalacheruvu, C S Puram, and Tallur mandals. Tragically, two bulls were killed by lightning in Kothapalem of old Chirala. Tirupati, which recorded around 37C, witnessed rain and gusty winds. Residents experienced a sigh of relief from the scorching weather and rising mercury levels that had persisted since Sunday morning. The cool weather in the afternoon brought cheer to the denizens of the city. Due to the unexpected rainfall, drain water overflowed onto roads in several areas, including Madhura Nagar, Tilak Road, and MR Palli, Balaji Colony, Kapila Theertham Road and G Car Street. The cool weather continued in Tirupati throughout the evening, providing much-needed respite from the heat. YSRCP will continue fight against Waqf Act till it is repealed: MP Avinash
KADAPA: YSRCP MP Y S Avinash Reddy has asserted that the party will continue its fight against the Waqf (Amendment) Act till it is repealed. Speaking at a Long March organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board in protest against the Act on Sunday, Avinash Reddy said the YSRCP had already filed a petition in the Supreme court challenging it. Addressing a gathering at the Seven Roads Junction in the city, Avinash Reddy pointed out several flaws in the Act. We opposed the Waqf Bill both in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. The Union government should understand the sentiments of crores of Muslims, and immediately repeal the unjust Act, he said. Former Deputy Chief Minister S B Amzath Basha echoed similar views, warning that protests will continue until the Act is repealed. Mayor K Suresh Babu, MLC Ramachandra Reddy, YSRCP district president P Ravindranath Reddy, Congress leader Afzal Khan, and several Muslim leaders spoke. Senior TDP leader V S Amir Babu faced backlash when he attempted to join the protest. Organisers blocked his entry, accusing him of double standards for supporting the Bill in Parliament, while attempting to show solidarity on the streets.

Body near JSP office: Kakinada police arrest wife, kin for murder
KAKINADA: Kakinada police have cracked a two-month-old murder case by identifying a decomposed body found near Pithapuram JSP office as that of Tangella Lovaraju, 38, a resident of Dharmavaram in Anakapalle district. Kakinada SP Bindu Madhav said Lovaraju was allegedly murdered by his wife, Syamala, in collusion with her relative Modem Mohan Kumar and his associate Balla Gangadhar Rao. The trio killed Lovaraju using a surgical blade while he was asleep and dumped his body in a canal between Kathipudi and Kakinada, near the JSP office. Hidden in thick bushes, the body went unnoticed until a lorry driver detected a foul smell. Gollaprolu police, upon inspection, found a highly decomposed body with injuries, making it difficult to identify the victim. Due to the bodys location, speculation of political links arose. Police investigated over 7,000 missing cases, reviewed CCTV footage, and analysed mobile tower data. A breakthrough came on April 28 when Lovarajus mother filed a missing complaint at Yelamanchili. She revealed Syamala had discouraged her from approaching police. Further probe exposed Syamalas extramarital affair with Mohan Kumar and the motive behind the murder.

The DFO will act as chairman of the ETF. Thirty villages in Chinagottigallu mandal have been severely impacted, including Kothapalli, where a fatal incident occurred on April 25.
