Naidu Misleading Public With Unachievable Promises in TDP Manifesto: Jagan

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan on Saturday accused the TDP president and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of misleading the people in the State with unfulfilled promises in the name of Super-6. Drawing a comparison between the TDP and YSRCP rule in 2014-2019 and 2019-2024 respectively through a power-point presentation at Tadepalle party office in Guntur, he said the YSRCP continued welfare schemes and infrastructure initiatives in spite of facing financial constraints due to Covid-19. Referring to Naidus allegations that the YSRCP was imposing more taxes, he refused the formers allegations saying that the TDP president was only misleading people by telling lies. It is the responsibility of people to know the reality, Jagan Mohan Reddy said, making it clear that he would not tell lies and would execute whatever feasible only. The YSRCP implemented the schemes like Kapu Nestham, House Pattas, Gorumudha that were not included in the manifesto released by the YSRCP in the 2019 elections, he explained. We are not like Naidu, who dupes people with unfulfilled promises. Whatever is possible for the benefit of people, the YSRCP will certainly implement it, he said, adding that no State government in the country executed the welfare schemes on DBT mode directly benefiting the people without the involvement of anyone.

Jagan Spells Out 9 Promises in YSRCP Manifesto

Vijayawada: The much-awaited manifesto-2024 of YSRCP with nine crucial promises was released by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy at Tadepalle party office in Guntur on Saturday. Promising to continue existing welfare schemes aimed at benefiting people across the State, he said that the pensions to elderly persons was increased from Rs.3,000 to Rs.3,500. The pension amount of Rs.250 will be increased in January 2028 and another Rs.250 will be increased in January 2029 totaling to Rs.3,500. No State government in the country was giving pensions to elderly persons like in Andhra Pradesh. The YSRCP government was spending Rs.24,000 crore for giving pensions to 66 lakh while neighbouring Telangana was spending only Rs.12,200 crore for giving pensions to 43 lakh people. Andhra Pradesh: Six Lok Sabha Seats Never Saw Female Contestant

Visakhapatnam: Since independence, no major political party in Andhra Pradesh has fielded women candidates for the Lok Sabha seats of Anantapur, Guntur, Hindupur, Machilipatnam, Nandyala and Ongole. No woman candidate ever won the polls from these constituencies. From Narasapur and Ongole, two women from lesser-known parties tried for the seats, but failed. Andhra Pradesh has 25 Lok Sabha seats. Four of these are reserved for SC (Scheduled Caste) and one for ST (Scheduled Tribe) candidates. The remaining 20 seats are unreserved. The Election Commissions data shows AP has an electorate of 3,99,84,868, with female voters outnumbering males at 2,02,21,455 and 1,97,59,489 respectively. Women voters have a significant presence in each constituency. However, this presence is not reflected in the Lok Sabha. No woman from Anantapur, Guntur, Hindupur, Machilipatnam, Nandyala and Ongole has ever been elected. Parliament represents the aspirations and concerns of its citizens. However, there have been instances of women candidates entering the fray in other constituencies. In Rajampet and Tirupati, the BJP and TD fielded women candidates, albeit only once. In 2014, Rajampet YSRC contestant PV Midhun Reddy was challenged by Daggupati Purandeswari, representing BJP. She secured 426990 votes but lost the battle. In 1996, TD gave Tirupatis Lok Sabha ticket to Gali Rajasree, who secured 292406 votes but was defeated by Nelavala Subrahmanyam of the Congress. In Narasapur, no major political party has given ticket to women since independence. However, Ganji Purnima, representing the Republican Party Of India (A), contested the polls there, got 865 votes and stood as the 14th runner-up. Similarly, for the Ongole Lok Sabha seat, Gogineni Bharati Devi, representing the SWA party, contested and secured 104703 votes but was defeated by P Ankineedu Prasada Rao of the Congress, who secured 284597 votes. Andhra Pradesh still faces challenges in ensuring adequate representation of women candidates in Lok Sabha elections. Efforts to promote gender equality and encourage womens participation remain crucial for a more balanced political landscape.

TDP's priority is to 'rebuild' Andhra Pradesh, take it out of debt trap: Kanakamedal Ravindra Kumar

TDP leader focuses on rebuilding Andhra Pradesh by contesting elections, targeting Jagan Mohan Reddy, and forming alliances with BJP. Emphasis on job creation, financial aid, and fulfilling promises to tackle public debt and governance issues.

Andhra Pradesh's Revival: TDP Focuses on Rebuilding and Eradicating Debt

Andhra Pradesh's Revival: TDP Focuses on Rebuilding and Eradicating Debt A senior TDP leader has said the priority of the party is to ''rebuild'' Andhra Pradesh and take the state out of the debt trap by getting rid of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) National Coordinator (Election) and ex-Rajya Sabha MP Kanakamedal Ravindra Kumar said Andhra Pradesh has suffered more losses during the Jagan Mohan Reddy government than during the creation of the two Telugu states in 2014 when resources were shared with Telangana. According to the state government data, the public debt of Andhra Pradesh has increased from 31.02 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2019-20 to 33.32 per cent in 2023-24 fiscal, indicating deterioration in the fiscal health of the state in the last five years. ''Under the role of Jagan Mohan Reddy (Andhra CM) in the state, our party's priorities have changed. Our main priority is to get rid of Jagan Mohan Reddy and rebuild the state which has gone back 20 years,'' Kumar told PTI in an interview. Given the changed priorities, the TDP has returned to NDA tying up with BJP and Pawan Kalyans Jana Sena party (JSP) for both assembly and Parliamentary polls to safeguard the existence and the interest of Andhra Pradesh, he said. ''The reason behind the alliance is to ensure not to divide the anti-government vote,'' he noted. Claiming that the rise in corruption and anti-incumbency sentiments against the YSRCP government will favour the TDP this time, the party leader said the TDP is highlighting these issues in the campaign along with the six promises it plans to implement if voted to power. The TDP's six polls promises are: create 20 lakh jobs for youth and provide monthly unemployment allowance of RS 3,000 till they secure a job; give Rs 15,000 a year to every school-going child, three free gas cylinders a year; Rs 20,000 annually to Annadata scheme farmers; Rs 1,500 per month to women aged 18 to 59 under Aadabidda Nidhi Scheme and free bus service to women. Asked if the TDP was playing into the hands of BJP as the saffron party might get the support of the regional parties if either wins, Kumar said, ''There is a possibility. But we are supporting BJP at the cost of the future of over 5 crore Andhra people.'' ''The state development is the main consideration for the party, we don't want to consider central politics at this stage. Priorities will change only when things are set right in Andhra Pradesh, not now,'' he said. In the simultaneous 2024 polls to be held on May 13, TDP is contesting Lok Sabha polls from 17 seats, JSP in six and BJP in two. In the case of the assembly poll, TDP is contesting from 144 seats, JSP in 21, and BJP in 10 seats In the 2019 elections, the TDP exited NDA over the alleged lack of enough central funding and demand for special status for Andhra Pradesh. Kalyan withdrew support to the TDP in 2018. Expressing concern over the rising public debt of the state government, Kumar claimed that the debt has risen multifold in the last five years due to ''misrule'' and ''mis-administration''. The state finances are in such bad shape that the government is taking loans from the RBI to release pensions to its employees. ''The loss sustained by Jagan Mohan Reddy's regime is more than the loss incurred due to the state bifurcation,'' he claimed. The TDP leader said that the YSRCP has failed to fulfill several promises including special status to the state, made during the 2019 elections. The CM had promised that if YSRCP gets 25 MP seats from Andhra Pradesh then it would get a special status. ''But after coming to power, he forgot that promise...he visited Delhi not less than 31 times in the last five years. He did not make any demand from the Centre for fear of arrest and threat. He is on the ventilator of the central government,'' he claimed. He further claimed that the central government's schemes have not been implemented in Andhra Pradesh because the state government has not provided a matching grant. ''The central funds have been diverted in the state,'' he said. The CM has also failed to create a new capital for Andhra Pradesh even after completion of ten years of sharing Hyderabad as common capital with Telangana as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, he said. Adding to people's woes, the state government has recently come out with a new 'land title law' under which the original property document of a buyer will be vested with the state government and a revenue authority will be constituted to resolve the disputes and not civil courts, he claimed. ''This is a dangerous Act and takes away the rights of the people,'' he added.

Reservoir levels dip to 10-yr low in South India

NEW DELHI: Southern India faces a grim situation as water in reservoirs dips to a 10-year low. Indias ongoing general election campaign coincides with an excruciatingly hot summer season, compounded by a serious water crisis, especially in Southern India. Major reservoirs in the region hold less water compared to the previous year, during the corresponding time of 2023, and the storage level is even lower than the average storage of the last ten years during the corresponding period. According to the latest data from the Central Water Commission (CWC) released on Friday , Southern India faces a water crisis as reservoir levels plunge to just 17% capacity. The storage during the corresponding period last year was 29%, and the average storage of the last ten years during the corresponding period was 23% of the live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The Southern region has 43 reservoirs, which include the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. As per the latest CWC data, the current water level is 82% of the corresponding time in 2023 in the countrys 150 reservoirs. Last year, there were 64.775 billion cubic meters (BCM) in 150 major water reservoirs, while this year, it is 53.775 BCM as of April 25, 2024. The current water level is 96% higher than the average of the last 10 years. The average of the last 10 years of live storage is 55.523 BCM. Besides the Southern region, water in Western and Central India reservoirs has a larger deficit of live storage capacity compared to the North and Eastern regions reservoirs. In the Northern region, there is a slightly lower water level than the corresponding period last year and is also less than the average storage of the last ten years during the corresponding period. In the Eastern region, storage during the current year is better than the corresponding period last year and is also better than the average storage of the last ten years during the corresponding period. Meanwhile, meteorologists foresee the water crisis as temporary, with the El Nino climatic phenomenon nearing its end, while the La Nina phenomenon is expected to bring bountiful southwest monsoon rainfall during June-September. El Nio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or El Nino is a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is synonymous with the weakening of the Indian southwest monsoon. La Nina is the cyclic counterpart to El Nino, known for cool phases of a recurring climate pattern across the tropical Pacific, causing good rainfall in India.

Karnataka: Gowda slams Congress for manifesto promises

PADUVALAHIPPE(HASSAN): Hitting out at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge for allegedly misleading people by releasing a bogus manifesto,JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda said on Friday that there is no sanctity for promises made. He also questioned whether Rahul and Kharge are the PM or CM to make such promises. They are only ordinary Congress members, he told reporters after voting. Gowda also termed the guarantee card an ordinary pamphlet. The Congress has fooled poor people by distributing the pamphlet, fearing defeat, Gowda said, adding that the party had not released the pamphlet in Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, or any other state. The pamphlet should have the signatures of the CM or his deputy, and educated people do not believe in such a manifesto, he said. Gowda also alleged the Congress had distributed the pamphlet with the aim of defeating JDS HD Kumaraswamy and Prajwal Revanna. The JDS has lodged a complaint with the authorities concerned for misleading people, he added. Taking exception to Kharges statements in Kalaburagi that people can put mud and materials used for final rituals on his body instead of defeating the Congress candidate, he said there was no necessity to make such emotional statements at a public function.

Mudiraj Community to Reject BRS Candidates in LS Polls

Hyderabad: The Mudiraj community, which holds a significant presence in 30 Assembly segments in the state, has decided to vote against the BRS in the Lok Sabha elections to express its anger against the party for its failure to fulfil its demands when it was in power. The Mudiraj community is primarily angry with former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao for not fulfilling his promise of including their community in the BC-A category as against BC-D and for not including new members in 5,000-odd fishermen cooperative societies in tune with their population. The community said it would work for the party, which assures them to fulfil their genuine demands. The Medak, Mahbubnagar, and Chevella Lok Sabha constituencies have the highest concentration of the Mudiraj population. The BRS government in its first term had formed a nine-member Cabinet Sub-Committee to look into the grievances of the Mudiraj community. The committee, after a lot of deliberations with members of the community, submitted a report to the government, seeking the implementation of the Fishermen Protection Act and implementation of GO No 6, which assures to include new members aged above 18 in fishermen societies. But the then BRS government did not fulfil the demands, said Dr. Choppari Shankar Mudiraj, president of the Telangana Mana Mudiraj Mahasabha. The community was also not happy over Rao ignoring them politically in his second term. After Etala Rajendar, who hails from the Mudiraj community, was forced to quit, Rao did not included anyone from the community in his Cabinet. Dr Shankar Mudiraj said it was the first time in the states history, including that of united Andhra Pradesh, that the state cabinet did not feature a member from Mudiraj community. Highlighting the BRS neglect for the Mudiraj community, Dr Shankar Mudiraj said the BRS chief had given a single corporation to a Mudiraj leader. Even in the last Assembly elections, he said the BRS had not given a single Assembly ticket to a community member though it demanded the inclusion of its representatives by holding 30 Atma Gaurava Sabhas and a public meeting at Parade Ground in Secunderabad. The community demanded 20 Assembly seats from each political party. The Congress gave three seats and the BJP gave seven seats to Mudiraj members in the Assembly polls, said the community elder Shailendra Shivayya Mudiraj. Rao allotted five acres of land at Plot Number 1 in Kokapet and assured Rs 5 crore for the construction of a building. Except for Bhumi Puja at the site, there was no progress and no amount was released yet. The Congress government, however, assured the Mudiraj community that it would set up a finance corporation for the welfare of Mudiraj members when the community elders met Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently. The community is seeking the government to set up the corporation with a corpus fund of Rs 10,000 crore, looking at the large population of the community. The community claims that it makes up 14 per cent of the population in Telangana state. According to Dr M Santosh Mudiraj, GO No. 98 of 1964 identifies 32 castes in united Andhra Pradesh as fishermen communities, which includes the Mudiraj community. Among 5,000 fishermen cooperative societies, the Mudiraj hold a major share among their four lakh members. The community sought the protection of their fishing areas from others and sought the strict implementation of the Fishermen Protection Act.

Patralekha Chatterjee | Amid row over masala, is the food we eat safe?

Amid all the talk about Viksit Bharat by 2047, it is worth remembering that a key difference between a developed and a developing country is in the quality of everyday life of ordinary people. Most people take relatively clean air, clean water and safe food for granted in developed countries. Not so in the rest of the world. Which brings me to a slew of recent media reports that suggest that we are not only wallowing in toxic air and toxic speeches but also in food that puts us at risk. In polarised India, the vegetarian/non-vegetarian fault line continues to be the all-weather headline-grabber. Both groups are at risk, however, when it comes to unsafe food. The recent stories about fake (synthetic) paneer, spices with carcinogenic ingredients, chicken possibly fattened with antibiotics, potentially leading to antibiotic resistance, and baby food with added sugar spotlight an old story. The companies on the dock are both international and national, big names and small players. I could not contact all the errant companies for their side of the story so I am not naming them in this particular column. There is a sense of dj vu. More worryingly, things are getting worse. Last year, the State Food Safety Index (SFSI), released by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Indias food regulator, found that 19 out of 20 large states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, had slipped from 2019 in their 2023 scores on food safety. If this is what is stated officially, just imagine the reality! As someone who loves food, I was distressed to read that fake paneer has been flooding the market for quite some years now. In the most recent case, the authorities seized more than 1,000 kg of synthetic paneer along the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway. In May 2022, the Mumbai police had seized almost 2,000 kg of synthetic paneer from two factories. National newspapers are now running articles on how to detect spurious paneer, often made by mixing milk powder and water, further curdled with lime juice and acetic acid, and sometimes laced with detergent. How many will carry out rapid tests on paneer before eating it? India is also embroiled in a masala controversy. Indias food safety regulator has reportedly asked food commissioners across India to collect samples from all spice manufacturing units in the country after regulators from Hong Kong and Singapore red-flagged two popular Indian spice brands over the alleged presence of ethylene oxide, well beyond the permissible limit. Vendors in both these places have been asked to remove the spices from the shelves. The World Health Organisation considers ethylene oxide as a probable human carcinogen and says its levels in the environment should be kept as low as feasible. Then there is an investigation by Public Eye, a Switzerland-based NGO, and International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), which raises uncomfortable questions about a leading multinational food and beverage conglomerates manufacturing practices in India. According to the report, the company allegedly adds sugar to cereals for babies in developing countries, a practice it does not follow in rich countries. The company says it has reduced sugar content by up to 30 per cent in recent years, but there is still no response to the critical question about double standards. Then there is the killer issue -- use of antibiotics in livestock and poultry feed to promote growth. A recent report by the US-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) and a national newspaper alleged that one of Indias major poultry producers was selling products aimed at speeding up poultry growth and which contained drugs vital for human health. Once again, this did not surprise anyone who has been tracking the misuse of antibiotics in livestock and poultry feed, leading to a proliferation of multi-drug resistant bacteria. In 2018, TBIJ had found Colistin, a last-resort antibiotic used to treat severe human infections, in Indias poultry industry. At that point, no law was broken as there was no law. The furore that followed the revelation and a landmark study on Colistin by an inter-disciplinary team of doctors and scientists led the Indian government to ban the use of Colistin in farms. This was a laudable step, but there has been no follow-up on the impact of the ban. Clearly, unmonitored use of medically important antibiotics in the poultry sector for non-therapeutic purposes is disastrous anywhere, including India, which has the highest burden of bacterial infection and sustained antimicrobial resistance. India is among the countries that endorsed the Muscat Ministerial Manifesto on AMR (2022), which outlines three global targets. One of the three goals relates to reducing the total amount of antimicrobials used in the agri-food system by at least 30-50 per cent from the current level by 2030. I think India has provisions in place to deal with AMR (antimicrobial resistance) in both medical and agricultural settings, but the question is where it falls as a priority in terms of enforcement. I think the example of how decisively India dealt with Colistin once the issue was well known is commendable, says Anirban Mohapatra, a US-based microbiologist and author of a new book When the Drugs Dont Work: The Hidden Pandemic that Could End Modern Medicine. Just as with environmental pollution, the specific link between antibiotic use in animals and drug-resistant infections in humans is difficult to prove. Despite these challenges, there is substantial evidence suggesting that antibiotic use in agriculture contributes to the rise in antibiotic-resistant superbugs, writes Mohapatra in his book. A 2024 report by the UNs Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) notes: The results of several studies conducted on AMR pathogens in animals from different parts of India is indicative of an alarming situation. Both the food-producing and companion animals were found to harbour AMR pathogens. India has a National Action Plan on Antimicrobial resistance. But when it comes to implementation, there are key challenges including sub-optimal financial allocations, inadequate One Health and programmatic approach and weak harnessing of existing national capacity in all aspects of AMR, says the FAO report. State governments are not fully onboard. We can go hoarse blaming multinationals and domestic companies for putting profits before human health but it boils down to food standards and the regulatory environment. The nature and composition of the FSSAI is central to ensuring that all decisions are in the public interest and are evidence-based. The public cannot become forensic scientists overnight, testing everything before they eat. If Indian regulators will not protect Indian citizens and Indian lives, who will?

Rise of Social Media Influencers in AP Politics

VISHAKHAPATNAM: Politicians in Andhra Pradesh are increasingly turning to social media influencers to reach out to and sway their voters. There are lesser numbers of traditional campaign rallies and press conferences as the new battleground for political influence has moved online. Recognising the immense reach and impact of social media personalities, politicians are actively courting these digital campaigners to promote their agendas. Offering lucrative sums ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 per post, and up to Rs 10,000 for interviews, they are tapping into the massive followings of these influential figures and agencies. A prime example is in Visakhapatnam parliament seats. The interviews of several candidates have been shared across various Vizag-based social media pages, even as the youtubers claimed they were not being paid, and they were only reaching information to their viewers. A growing symbiotic relationship between politicians and social media stars is all too clear. The trend extends to the highest levels of government as well. Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's recent social media event saw over 500 of the state's most active social media users in attendance, underscoring the importance he places on this digital outreach. Another evidence of this shift was seen in the YSRC party's recent video challenge, where the public was encouraged to record videos supporting the CM, which were then shared across the party's social media handles -- and also a photo, with CM, of the one that wins the competition. This innovative approach has generated significant buzz. An anonymous Vizag-based Instagram influencer with over 2,16,000 followers said political leaders have approached them, offering substantial sums to promote their campaigns through his platform. The role of social media influencers in AP politics is only set to grow. The ability to reach and sway large, engaged audiences has made them a crucial asset for politicians seeking to connect with voters in the digital age.

Film Stars Give Political Campaigns A Miss

HYDERABAD: Election campaigns are not just about high-decibel sounds and passionate speeches by leaders, but they are also about star power which actor is campaigning for whom. In fact, in Telugu states, political parties would make a list of star campaigners before they even draw up the schedule. However, this election seems to be different. Star campaigners are clearly missing in action in the election campaign in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state. Strangely enough, top Tollywood stars have been conspicuous by their absence in the campaign trail. In the previous elections, it was not uncommon to see big names from the Telugu film industry like megastar Chiranjeevi, power star Pawan Kalyan, and Jr NTR campaign for political parties. Stars would not only draw humongous crowds, but were also capable of making or breaking the fortunes of political parties, not to mention a sense of excitement among fans. However, the same is not the case this time around. For reasons best known to them, Tollywood biggies have stayed away. The absence of star campaigners clearly affected the political campaigns. Political parties are certainly finding it hard to mobilise support and draw decent crowds, which comes organically if a star were to be there. The changing political landscape is likely to be the reason behind stars keeping a safe distance from the campaigns. Stars may be exercising caution on siding with a particular party given the changing dynamics of political alliances. Another reason could be the scrutiny of political funding (electoral bonds) which recently caused quite a flutter in political circles. While political parties are definitely missing the stars in action, deepfake videos are making the rounds on social media, which is a cause for concern. A video of Allu Arjun seemingly campaigning for the Congress went viral. However, memes appear to be filling in the void that was created in the election campaign. Political memes are being created featuring actors with zero interest in politics. With Tollywood comedy King Brahmanandam leading the way, there are memes featuring famous scenes from movies of star heroes like Venkatesh and Ravi Teja among others. As the campaign heads towards a climax, it remains to be seen if there would be any last-minute appearances by stars.

Centre told to maintain status quo on VSP land

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has asked the Centre to maintain status quo on the sale of lands and assets of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). When a batch of petitions, challenging the privatisation of VSP came up for hearing on Thursday, the Centre made it clear that it has taken a decision, in principle, to disinvest its stake in the plant and clarified there was no proposal to sell its assets. A batch of PILs challenging the proposal to disinvest the Centres stake were filed by former IPS officer VV Lakshminarayana, Praja Shanti Party president KA Paul and others. Some others filed petitions seeking directions to the VSP management to provide jobs to the land oustees as assured earlier. During the last hearing, the bench asked the Centre to place before it details regarding the Act by which it is privatising the plant and asked if it took any decision on the letter written by the chief minister regarding alternative measures for strengthening the plant instead of privatising it. It also wanted to know if the Centre consulted the employees, workers and other stakeholders before taking a decision on privatising the plant. Centre selling PSUs in name of disinvestment When the PILs came up for hearing on Thursday, CVR Rudraprasad, representing the Centre, informed the court that they have filed a counter as per its directions. Responding to it, Advocate General S Sriram said the counter filed by the Centre had nothing new. The AG said some English words were added and a fresh counter was filed. Sriram said the counter does not contain the details sought by the courtincluding no reference to the contents of the letter written by the CM. Additional Solicitor General B Narasimha Sharma, on behalf of the Centre, said that the finance ministry has responded to the Chief Ministers letter in 2021 itself. Narasimha Sharma informed the court that it has taken a decision, in principle, to privatise the plant, but there was no progress in the process. The ASG also informed the court that they have no proposal to sell the lands of the plant. He asserted that the Centre would not sell even an acre of VSP lands. Responding to this, the bench asked him if the Centre will maintain status quo on the sale of VSP lands, to which counsel Narasimha Sharma agreed. One of the petitioners counsel Y Balaji urged the court to record the same, to which the court responded positively and issued interim orders to maintain status quo. Intervening, Praja Shanti Party chief KA Paul, who is one of the petitioners, said the Centre is selling away PSUs in the name of disinvestment. He said several major industries have gone into the hands of private people and hoped that the VSP does not meet the same fate.

YSRC govt failed to complete Polavaram project due to graft: Piyush Goyal

VIJAYAWADA : Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Thursday claimed that Andhra Pradesh has witnessed the YSRCs vindictive and corrupt rule in the past five years. Addressing the media in Vijayawada during his one-day visit to the State, the BJP leader alleged that the State has experienced a string of failures marked by misgovernance at the highest levels in the last five years. He noted that despite Central grants to the tune of Rs 15,000 crore being released for Polavaram project, the government failed to complete it due to corruption, thus betraying the farmers of the State. Despite the fact that YSR in the YSR Congress Partys name stands for Yuvajana, Shramik and Rythu, the youth, workers and farmers have been neglected. The State suffered mismanagement under Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Despite the immense potential in the State and its previous status as a fast-developing region, the last five years have seen it overrun by the sand, land and liquor mafias, he claimed. He added Central schemes designed to benefit the poor were not fully executed in the State. The Narendra Modi-led Centre approved approximately 21.32 lakh homes for the State under PMAY, but the ruling YSRC only managed to distribute 3.25 lakh homes to beneficiaries, he alleged. He expressed hope that once TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu becomes the chief minister, the State will be placed on the path of progress by a double-engine government. Union Minister Piyush Goyal during a press conference Union minister accuses YSRC govt of diverting Rs 8,000 crore Panchayat funds He assured people that the TDP-led NDA alliance in the State will prioritise the completion of Polavaram, ensuring that Godavari water flows into every household and farm. On the issue of setting up of a railway zone as promised, the Union minister alleged that the YSRC government has not yet provided suitable land in Visakhapatnam. He asserted that the alliance would win and the new government would allocate land for the construction of the special railway zone. He accused the state government of diverting Rs 8,000 crore in panchayat grants between 201920 and 202223. The Union Minister stated that the countrys GDP ranking has improved from 11th to 5th globally, and it is poised to become the third-largest economy in the next five years. During Modis tenure, 20 crore people emerged out of poverty without discrimination based on religion, caste, or state, with the measures implemented by the Centre, he added. Piyush Goyal highlighted the success of the striking down of Article 370, which he said facilitated the integration of Kashmir into India.

Avinash has done no wrong, says Jagan

PULIVENDULA(KADAPA) : Defending YS Avinash Reddy, the incumbent Kadapa MP and YSRCs candidate for the Parliament segment, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said, The people of this district know, who killed my uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy. Avinash has done nothing wrong, and I strongly believe that, so I gave the ticket to him to contest the election. Addressing a large gathering at the CSI grounds in Pulivendula, before filing his nomination on Thursday, the YSRC president asserted that Pulivendula will continue to grow forever. He noted that Pulivendulas success story is a reflection of his and his partys commitment to doing good and staying on the right path. Mocking the opposition leaders, he said, Unable to face me alone in the political arena, the TDP, JSP and BJP have united to conspire against me. Unfortunately, my two sisters (YS Sharmila and Sunita Narreddy) are being used as part of their conspiracy. Holding the Congress responsible for the bifurcation of the State and neglecting to include special category status in the State Reorganisation Act, Jagan asked the gathering if anyone would even vote for the party that divided the State. It was Congress which tried to hide YSR legacy. Congress didnt even receive as many votes as NOTA did, he pointed out. It may be pertinent to note that Jagans sister and APCC chief YS Sharmila is contesting against Avinash in Kadapa. This perhaps could be the reason why the Chief Minister attacked the Congress. Taking exception to TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and his allies for often disparagingly describing Pulivendula and its culture, Jagan said, The culture of Pulivendula, Kadapa and Rayalaeema signify fearlessness. Jagan to address three public meetings from April 28 YSRC president and Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will start his third phase of poll campaign from April 28. Jagan will be addressing three public meetings daily. On day one, he will address public meetings in Tadipatri, Venkatagiri and Kandukuru Assembly constituencies. On April 29, he will address gatherings in Chodavaram, P Gannavaram and Ponnur. Younger sisters have become part of Opposition conspiracy, alleges Jagan Accusing Naidu, JSP president Pawan Kalyan, and BJP State chief D Purandeswari of attempting to tarnish the legacies of YSR, he said, With their encouragement, some people (referring to Sharmila) are trying to paint themselves as the heirs of YSR. Charging the Opposition with trying to destroy Avinashs life, the YSRC chief said, My younger sisters have become part of the opposition conspiracy. They are hanging around with those who unfairly defeated Vivekananda in the MLC election. Stating that the people have to decide the successor of the YS Rajasekhara Reddy, he asked, After joining the party (Congress) that orchestrated conspiracies against YSR, do these persons think they are the heirs of YSR? How can those who now wear yellow sarees be the true heirs of YSR? Stating that voting for Congress is as good as voting Naidu, the Chief Minister said, Who will benefit if our votes are divided? It will be the TDP supremo and BJP. Striking an emotional chord with the people of Pulivendula, Jagan said, Pulivendula is my heartbeat, it is the very definition of development, trust, and success story. Today, the flowing waters of Krishna River in Pulivendula stand testimony to the unwavering determination of my father, the great leader YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Credit for the development of Pulivendula goes to him. If he took two steps, as his son I took another two steps to ensure that not just Pulivendula, but the entire State is developed, he said. Elaborating on the initiatives he has taken for the development of Pulivendula Assembly constituency, Jagan said, unlike in the past, 10 TMC of water is being stored in Chitravati Balancing Reservoir, benefiting the farmers of the region. Similarly, Paidipalem Reservoir is also filled. Yerraballi Lift irrigation works taken up at Rs 1,000 crore are under progress. The water grid project taken up at Rs 480 crore for drinking water is almost ready, he highlighted. The people of Pulivendula have for a long time wanted a medical college. We will start that college soon, he promised the people. I didnt assume the role of Chief Minister to accumulate wealth or advance my familys interests. God has bestowed upon me this position to serve the people, the YSRC Chief asserted.

YSRC, TDP cadres clash, pelt stones in Tirupati

TIRUPATI : Tension prevailed in Tirupati as cadres of the ruling YSRC and Opposition TDP clashed outside the Revenue Divisional Officers (RDO) office in Tirupati on Thursday when candidates of both parties arrived one after the other to file their nomination papers to contest from Chandragiri Assembly constituency. Chaos ensued when workers of both parties started pelting stones at each other. Police personnel intervened to disperse the clashing groups and restore order. While the YSRC has fielded Chevireddy Mohith Reddy, son of two-time Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, the TDP has nominated Pulivarthi Nani. The contenders arrived at the RDO office simultaneously, accompanied by large groups of party activists, despite restrictions on large gatherings near the nomination venue. According to eyewitnesses, Nani arrived on a motorcycle just as Mohith and his father were leaving from the RDO office. Clashes reportedly erupted when Bhaskar Reddys car was allegedly blocked by TDP workers, leading to stone pelting between the two sides. Later, Mohith Reddy accused TDP workers of orchestrating violence to deceive the public. He stated that YSRC does not engage in such tactics to disrupt peaceful elections. Dismissing the allegations, Nani charged the YSRC workers with attempting to obstruct him from filing his nomination. He asserted that the TDP activists will continue to strive for his victory without fearing the conspiracies by Bhaskar Reddy. Internal strife worsens in Sullurpeta In another instance, internal rivalry within the ruling YSRC in the Sullurpeta segment came to the fore when two leaders clashed in front of sitting MLA Kiliveti Sanjeevaiah during his election rally in Sullurpeta town. The incident occurred when Sanjeevaiah arrived in Sullurupeta to file his nomination papers. As he was travelling in his campaign vehicle, local leader Kalathuru Shekhar Reddy boarded the vehicle and demanded Nellore District Cooperative Central Bank (NDCCB) chairman Kamireddy Satyanarayana Reddy to step down. Tensions flared as Shekhar Reddy confronted Satyanarayana Reddy. A two-time MLA, Sanjeevaiah is vying for a hat-trick victory in Sullurpeta. Recently, internal rivalry in the constituency has become a worrying factor for the ruling party. Satyanarayna Reddy has been accused of alienating key party leaders. Pointing out past differences between Satyanarayana Reddy and Sanjeevaiah, party workers and the public are questioning whether the NDCCB chairman is actually loyal to the party or acting out of personal vendetta.

Trounce Jagan & send him home for rapid growth of State: Naidu

VIJAYAWADA : The people of the State have started revolting against Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and he will be trounced in the elections, said TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu. Addressing a public meeting, along with Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan and former Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is contesting as the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Rajampet, on Thursday, the TDP chief cautioned the people of the State to be alert as Jagan will loot the properties of everyone if he retains power in the State. He urged the people to give their treatment to the injury suffered by Jagan in the recent stone-pelting incident by simply throwing him out of power. Promising to sanction a medical college for Rajampet soon after the formation of the TDP-led NDA government in the State, he said the Galeru-Nagari project will be completed on a priority basis to supply Krishna water to Rajampet. We will rebuild the Annamayya project, which was washed away in floods, and come to the rescue of the project displaced families, he vowed. Jagans remark on saree shameful: YS Sharmila

VIJAYAWADA: In a vehement rebuttal to the remarks made by her brother and YSRC president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, APCC chief YS Sharmila Reddy said her brother seems to have no shame for commenting on the colours of sarees worn by his sisters. Addressing a public meeting in Guntur on Thursday, she sought to know why Jagan has to stoop to such a low. Calling her brother uncultured for commenting on the colour of her saree, she demanded to know, Does TDP have any patent on yellow colour or has the party purchased it? Jagan seems to have forgotten that the display of his news channel was yellow colour, which was recommended by YS Rajasekhara Reddy as he believed the colour signifies a good omen. Responding to the Chief Ministers allegations that she reads out of a script prepared by TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, she said, I dont need to read scripts prepared by others. It is Jagan who reads the script prepared for him verbatim. I am the daughter of YSR, and I dont have to lower my head before anyone. Sharmila, who is contesting the Kadapa MP seat against her cousin YS Avinash Reddy, opined that Jagan lowered himself before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and became his foster son. Has he ever spoken on the States interests? He is the heir of Modi and not YSR, she quipped and questioned Jagans silence over the violence in Manipur. Why did Jagan support Modi when so many Christians were being killed? she sought to know. Claiming that none of those who follow Jagan are his well-wishers, she said, Women, who spoke ill of YSR are now his sisters. Those who insulted YSR in the Assembly are his relatives. Refuting the allegations that the CBI included YSRs name in the chargesheet, Sharmila said the fact is that it was Jagan who, through his lawyer Sudhakar Reddy, included YSRs name in the chargesheet by filing a petition so that he could get bail in the case. She challenged Jagan to clarify on the matter. Earlier, the APCC chief addressed public meetings in Vijayawada and Sattenapalle. She criticised the YSRC government for rendering the State without a capital. Speaking to mediapersons in Pulivendula, Vivekananda Reddys daughter Suneetha Narreddy said that if her husband N Rajasekhar Reddy is an accused in her fathers murder, he should be arrested. Whoever is responsible, should be arrested. All I seek is justice for my father, she added. Pointing out that Pulivnedula was developed due to the efforts of YSR and Vivekananda Reddy, she asked why Jagan omitted the contribution of Vivekananda Reddy. Further, she demanded the Chief Minister to come clean on why he withdrew his demand for a CBI inquiry into Vivekas murder. A doctor by profession, Sunitha advised Jagan to remove the bandage on his forehead so that air can pass through or else it would get infected.

Issues galore in Machilipatnam, development of port vital

VIJAYAWADA: Machilipatnam Lok Sabha constituency has a plethora of issues that need the attention of policy makers for years, but have been totally ignored. Bandar or Machilipatnam port has been a long-burning issue. Finally, the works of the port project had commenced in May, 2023. The port is expected to be a pivot of change for the entire Krishna district, and emerge as an important sea port on the East Coast. After several agitations, the port was sanctioned by the YSRC government, but it hit a roadblock with the contracting agency backing away due to some issues. After the State bifurcation, the project was given to Navayuga Engineering Company Limited, but the project got embroiled in land issues. After the YSRC came to power, the project tender was cancelled, and a new DPR was prepared. Later, the project was handed over to MEIL, which is expected to complete it in two years. Speaking to TNIE, Vinay of Machilipatnam town said, The development of the port would bring the much-needed growth to the region, and could create more employment. For several years, the people of Nagayalanka and Edurumondi have been using punts to travel between the two islands risking their lives. The demand for a bridge for years remains a dream. In Gudivada, the long pending demand for Road Over Bridge (ROB) is yet to be met, though several assurances were given in this regard. In Gannavaram Assembly segment, the issue of compensation to farmers for the land acquired for airport expansion is yet to be resolved. Machilipatnam also known as Bandar parliamentary constituency consists of seven Assembly segments, including Bandar, Pedana, Avanigadda, Gudivada, Gannavaram, Pamarru (SC reserved) and Penamaluru. The constituency has a total population of 17,35,079. The total electorate in Machilipatnam is 15,18,826. The parliamentary constituency, which retained the name Krishna District after the district reorganisation, has rural and semi-urban character, and compared to NTR District, it has more agriculture and aquaculture fields. Irrigation and drinking water is an issue in the constituency though the perennial Krishna River flows through it. The proposed barrages downstream of Prakasam Barrage have remained a distant dream. Bandar town gets drinking water once in two or three days now. Tail-end lands under Bandar Canal do not get water for irrigation, pointed out a senior CPM leader of the region. The demand for rail connectivity between Repalle and Machilipatnam remains unfulfilled. The region will witness a sea change if the rail connectivity is provided, he opined. The constituency was represented by Communists after it was formed in 1952. Sanaka Buchikotaiah was the first MP. He was succeeded by Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao of Congress, followed by Mandala Venkataswamy Naidu, Y Ankineedu Prasad, Nageswara Rao Meduri, Maganti Ankineedu, K Sambasiva Rao, Kolusu Pedda Reddaiah Yadav, K Satyanarayana, K Sambasiva Rao, Ambati Brahmanaiah and Badiga Ramakrishna. Konakalla Narayana of TDP represented the Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 and 2014. In 2019, Vallabhaneni Balasouri of YSRC was elected. The sitting MP has shifted his loyalties to the Jana Sena Party, and is contesting the Lok Sabha seat as an NDA candidate. Facing him is Dr Simhadri Chandrasekhar, a noted oncologist, contesting the election for the first time.

TDP irons out dissidence in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram

SRIKAKULAM/VIZIANAGARAM : Uttarandhra is set to witness a tough fight between the YSRC and the TDP-JSP-BJP combine as TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu seems to have pacified the disgruntled aspirants, who failed to get tickets due to the tripartite alliance, during his three-day visit to Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts as part of Praja Galam. The TDP chief is said to have succeeded in bringing a truce between the alliance nominees and dissidents to ensure that there is no rebel threat to the official candidates. With the assurance given by the TDP chief that those who failed to get tickets will be given party or nominated posts, several dissidents have started taking part in the election campaign with the official candidates, giving up their non-cooperation attitude. The three-day visit of Naidu has rejuvenated TDP cadres to strive for the victory of the tripartite alliance candidates in the elections. Especially, the uncertainty among the second-rung cadre has been cleared in Srungavarapukota, Gajapathinagaram, Cheepurupalli, Vizianagaram, Pathapatnam and Srikakulam Assembly segments. Gompa Krishna of Srungavarapukota, Kondapalli Appalanaidu of Gajapathinagaram, Kimidi Nagarjuna of Cheepurupalli and Kalamata Venkata Ramana of Pathapatnam and other disgruntled leaders have agreed to coordinate with the TDP official candidates, and strive for the victory of the party in the elections. If the tripartite alliance cadres work in a coordinated manner, the ruling YSRC may face a tough fight in the elections as Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts have been bastions of the TDP since its inception, observed a political analyst.

ONGOLE: Taking proactive measures in the summer season, the Ongole district authorities are busy in filling up all major and minor summer storage (SS) tanks under the Nagarjuna Sagar Project Right Canal (NSPRC) to cater the drinking water needs of the district. On the requests of the district and State RWS wing authorities, the NSP authorities released 5 TMC of water from the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir through its right canal on April 8 to cater the drinking water needs of Guntur, Palnadu, Prakasam and Bapatla districts. The NSP waters reached the district border point at 85/3 mile stone which is a 137.44-km stretch on April 12 and now water flows into the Darsi Branch Canal through the Nagarjuna Sagar Jawahar Right Main Canal to reach the Darsi balancing point. Out of nine major and minor summer storage tanks, in three tanks, including Mutukula DW Scheme, Gollapalli DW Scheme and Kurichedu tanks, the filling process was stopped and in the remaining six tanks the filling process is underway. I want to represent interests of people: Tamanna Simhadri

Tamanna Simhadri shot to fame in 2019 when she become the first transgender to contest an election in the State and that too against TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh in Mangalagiri. Now, she has decided to take on another big name in the State politics, JSP chief Pawan Kalyan from Pithapuram as Bharatiya Chaitanya Yuvajana Party nominee. In an interview with K Kalyan Krishna Kumar, Tamanna Simhadri revealed her intentions to serve the people Did you expect that the Bharatiya Chaitanya Yuvajana Party would field you from Pithapuram? Politics is unpredictable, and personal expectations often differ from reality. I never imagined that I would contest against Pawan Kalyan. However, after receiving the ticket from our party chief, it is my duty to contest the allotted seat. How do you feel about contesting against Pawan Kalyan, whom youve supported earlier? My support to Pawan Kalyan stemmed from my belief in his vision for the development of the State. In 2018, I supported Sri Reddy when she started a movement against injustice to women artistes in the film industry. She also targeted Pawan Kalyan. However, I came to know that Pawan Kalyan was targeted at the behest of a film director. Since then, I had been supporting Pawan Kalyan. Many of his supporters like me hoped to see Pawan Kalyan as CM, but it seems the JSP chiefs aspirations lie in supporting TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu for the post. I have realised that Pawan Kalyan didnt strive to do good for those who believe him, and provide guidance to those who joined politics inspired by him. Whom do you think is your rival -- Pawan Kalyan or YSRCs Vanga Geetha? In politics, every candidate is a potential rival. Regardless of their party affiliation, I see each candidate with equal focus, and I am determined to represent the interests of the people. You contested against Nara Lokesh in the last elections. How do you plan to make use of that experience now? Contesting against Lokesh was a significant milestone as I became the first transgender female to contest in Andhra Pradesh, a record recognised by the Guinness Book. Now, I want to utilise that experience and the support I garnered to further my campaign in Pithapuram. Additionally, my movement for the demands like renaming of Krishna district after Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga had earned me recognition and respect among the people, especially in Pithapuram, which is a constituency dominated by the Kapu community.

Under a dry spell

In the parched Remidicherla village of Andhra Pradesh, the community is facing a severe water shortage. Despite investments in water management projects and political promises during election season, the crisis persists. Borewells offer temporary relief, even as dependence on private suppliers and laborious pipeline installations underscore the severity of the situation. As the state-wide drought worsens, hope for sustained solutions remains uncertain, writes Sambasiva Rao M.
