Golmaal actor Susmita Mukherjee reveals she took up C-grade films to repay a Rs 1 crore loan: I sold my soul

Veteran actress Susmita Mukherjee has candidly opened up about one of the most difficult phases of her life, revealing that financial hardships forced her to accept projects she was never proud of. In a recent video shared on social media, the Golmaal actor reflected on the criticism she has received for starring in films she described as sexist and derogatory to women, saying those choices were driven by necessity rather than creative ambition. The actress also revealed that she and her husband were burdened with a Rs 1 crore debt after their production company shut down in 2002, leaving them with no option but to work relentlessly to repay the loan and support their family. Susmita Mukherjee: I sold my soul, but it was my helplessness Responding to a follower who questioned why she acted in films often labelled as C-grade and sexist, Susmita admitted that revisiting that period of her life was emotionally difficult. She recalled being asked why she chose such projects and confessed that she still does not feel proud of those decisions. Did I sell my soul? Of course, I sold my soul. Did I feel good about it? I didn't feel good then. I still don't feel good about it, but it was my helplessness, she said. Bankruptcy left Susmita Mukherjees family under financial pressure The actress revealed that her family's financial troubles began in 2002 when she and her husband lost their media company, Prayas Production, after it reportedly went bankrupt during a period of rapid technological changes in the industry. According to Susmita, the company was left with a Rs 1 crore loan, while creditors and recovery agents regularly visited their home demanding repayment. She shared that the difficult phase coincided with a time when her children were still very young, making it even more challenging. So debtors at the door used to come, recovery people used to come, they used to abuse us. It was a very bad time. My children were very young. So I was forced to start working again, she recalled. Susmita added that she and her husband worked tirelessly for three to four years to clear the debt. Working to repay loans and educate her daughter Apart from repaying loans, Susmita said she also wanted to ensure her daughter received the best education possible. Despite her husband's reservations, she decided to send her daughter abroad for higher studies, which further increased the family's financial responsibilities. She revealed that her daughter's education in Australia and New Zealand required significant financial support, making it necessary for her to continue accepting work, even if it did not align with her artistic preferences. Susmita Mukherjee: Now I only do work that touches my soul Looking back, Susmita said she does not regret making those choices because they helped secure her family's future. She explained that every individual has different reasons for earning money, whether it is financial security, family responsibilities or personal fulfilment. The actress added that she is now in a position where she no longer feels compelled to compromise. But now I don't do any work that doesn't touch my soul. Now I do exactly what I feel like; with respect, I earn well, and I'm happy with the projects I'm doing, she said. Concluding her message, Susmita acknowledged that actors do not always have complete control over the projects they choose. We are actors. We don't always have a choice. We are a cog in the wheel. Sometimes we have to work to run the house, she said. Also Read:Golmaal 5 makers BREAK SILENCE on December 2026 release rumours; call reports false and baseless
