Rashford, Henderson recalled in Tuchel's first England squad

LONDON: Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson were included in Thomas Tuchel's first England squad on Friday, while Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Newcastle defender Dan Burn earned their first call-ups. Rashford last played for the Three Lions a year ago, but has been revitalised since a January loan move to Aston Villa from Manchester United. Henderson, 34, made the last of his 81 appearances for England back in November 2023 as moves to Saudi Arabia and then Ajax saw the former Liverpool captain fall down the pecking order for Gareth Southgate and Lee Carsley. Tuchel, who officially took charge in January, faces Albania in his first match of World Cup 2026 qualifying on Friday before Latvia visit Wembley on Monday, March 24. Henderson and Rashford both missed England's run to the final of Euro 2024, but have been brought back in from the international wilderness by Tuchel. Rashford had been an outcast at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but has looked more like his old self in helping Aston Villa to reach the Champions League and FA Cup quarter-finals with four assists in nine appearances. Henderson's return is even more surprising given his struggles for form since leaving Liverpool nearly two years ago. Lewis-Skelly was expected to be included after excelling in his breakout season for the Gunners at 18. Burn is at the other end of his career, but is rewarded for his consistency with a first call up at 32. Tuchel is the third non-British coach of England after Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson. The former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss was hired to replace Gareth Southgate, who stepped down following England's Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain. The German's appointment stirred controversy among some England fans given their long-standing rivalry with Tuchel's homeland. But Prince William, now an English Football Association patron after 18 years as the organisation's president, believes Tuchel's pedigree as a Champions League winner with Chelsea makes him well suited for the job. I understand the debate around having an English manager, William told The Sun on Friday. But, to me, it should be the best person for the job, and Thomas is exactly the right person. Without doubt he is one of the top five managers in the world. It would be amazing if he could win the World Cup next year. It's gearing up to that and it's definitely possible. Squad Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton), James Trafford (Burnley) Defenders: Dan Burn, Tino Livramento (both Newcastle), Levi Colwill, Reece James (both Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (AC Milan/ITA) Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid/ESP), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Jordan Henderson (Ajax/NED), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa) Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Phil Foden (Man City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich/GER), Marcus Rashford (Aston Villa), Dominic Solanke (Tottenham)

Real Madrid edge Atletico on penalties to reach Champions League quarters

MADRID: Real Madrid produced a gritty display to reach the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-2 win on penalties against rivals Atletico Madrid, following a 1-0 defeat after extra time on Wednesday. Diego Simeone's side outplayed the record 15-time champions at the Metropolitano stadium for much of the game, but Madrid have never been eliminated by Atletico in the competition and they battled hard after Conor Gallagher's first-minute opener to secure a 2-2 aggregate draw. Thibaut Courtois made several saves to thwart Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Junior blazed a penalty high and wide for Madrid. In the shoot-out Alvarez scored for Atletico, but his effort was controversially ruled out for seeming to touch the ball twice because of a slip as he shot. The ball didn't move, complained Simeone. I want to believe they saw he touched it (twice). Marcos Llorente also missed for Atletico and Madrid's Antonio Rudiger struck the winner for the reigning champions, who will face Arsenal in the last eight. I had to pick the coldest players possible (for penalties), said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti. I think it's a lottery still, a toss-up, today it came in for us -- Atletico go out with their heads held high because they played at a good level. Atletico played with caution in the first leg despite trailing, willing to take a single goal deficit back to the fiery Metropolitano stadium, where they believed they could really turn the heat up on their arch-rivals. Real Madrid knocked Atletico out in the 2017 semi-finals in the final European game at the Vicente Calderon, with this the first time the derby has been played at Atletico's new home in the Champions League. After defeats by Madrid in the 2014 and 2016 finals, the latter on penalties, and elimination on every other occasion the teams have met in the competition, Atletico were desperate to change the narrative, but came up fractionally short. I think we played a great match, but unfortunately we lacked a bit of luck, Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told Movistar. The truth is that one feels pain, it hurts a lot. Atletico came flying out of the blocks and took the lead after just 27 seconds through Gallagher, levelling the tie on aggregate. Rodrigo De Paul's low ball in from the right was not cut out by Raul Asencio and former Chelsea midfielder Gallagher lunged in to beat Courtois from close range. We came out as if it was already won and in the first move they scored a goal against us, and that messed us up a lot, Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde told Movistar. Atletico were content to sit deep and soak up pressure as Real Madrid pushed the ball around in their territory but were also ready to spring forward on the counter. Courtois saved on three occasions from Alvarez, who had scored a brilliant goal in the first leg. Alvarez penalty controversy With Atletico controlling the game, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti brought on Eduardo Camavinga and Lucas Vazquez in search of fresh energy. Madrid soon produced their best attack of the game, with superstar trio Vinicius, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe combining on a rapid counter. Mbappe skipped away from Jose Gimenez and then was dragged down by the desperate Clement Lenglet for a penalty before he could shoot. Vinicius stepped up, facing down a red wall of whistling Atletico fans behind the goal, and buckled under the pressure, firing high and wide. The controversial Julian Alvarez penalty shot. Madrid shaded extra-time as both teams looked tired but pushed themselves to their limits with the match on a knife-edge. Mbappe stepped up first from the spot and sent Oblak the wrong way, with Bellingham following suit after Alexander Sorloth netted for Atletico. Alvarez slipped as he smashed home the hosts' second penalty and after a VAR review it was ruled out as he had touched the ball twice as he struck it. Oblak saved from Vazquez's weak penalty to put Atletico back on track but it was short-lived as Llorente crashed his penalty off the bar. Oblak dived the right way for Rudiger's decisive penalty, getting a hand to it but he could not keep it out as Madrid marched into the last eight, after winning their sixth shoot-out against Atletico from six. We were never out of the tie -- at worst, it was even, said Ancelotti.

Arsenal set up Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid after 9-3 aggregate win

LONDON: Arsenal drew 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday to complete an emphatic 9-3 aggregate win and set up a Champions League quarter-final against holders Real Madrid. The Gunners demolished the Dutch champions 7-1 in the Netherlands last week, making the second leg at the Emirates a formality. Arsenal, who made seven changes from Sunday's 1-1 draw at Manchester United, were quickly out of the blocks, scoring in the sixth minute through Oleksandr Zinchenko. Croatian veteran Ivan Perisic pulled PSV level on the night with a fine finish past the sprawling David Raya but midfielder Declan Rice headed Arsenal back in front. PSV, seeking to salvage pride after last week's humiliation, equalised with 20 minutes to go with a well-taken goal from Couhaib Driouech. Arsenal, who has been crowned European champions, will play 15-time winners Real Madrid in the last eight after Ancelotti's side squeaked past Atletico Madrid on penalties following an aggregate draw. The two sides have met just twice previously, with Arsenal winning 1-0 on aggregate in the round of 16 in the 2005/06 season. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the club should enjoy the achievement of reaching back-to-back quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, when Arsene Wenger was manager of the club. That tells you the difficulty of it, said the Spaniard. We have to value that and recognise that it is very difficult to do it. We've done it consistently and now we want to make the next step, which is going to be really difficult, but we are very capable of that. Arteta's men, whose Premier League challenge has fizzled out in recent weeks, were quickly in the driving seat in the second leg against PSV on Wednesday. Raheem Sterling received the ball on the right of the Arsenal attack and found his former Manchester City team-mate Zinchenko, who glided along the 18-yard box before unleashing a superb left-footed shot past Walter Benitez. Former Tottenham player Perisic levelled in the 18th minute and Raya had to be alert to produce a fingertip save from the lively Driouech moments later. But the home side were back in front in the 37th minute Sterling, who has been out of favour under Arteta despite his lack of forward options, charged down the right and produced a teasing cross that Rice headed home. Raya produced another fine save 10 minutes into the second half, diving full length to his left to keep out an effort from Isaac Babadi. But PSV were level with 20 minutes to go after Moroccan youth international Driouech, making his first Champions League start, dinked the ball over the stranded Arsenal goalkeeper. The Dutch champions were now on top but neither side could find a winner. The Gunners are realistically out of the Premier League title race with leaders Liverpool 15 points clear at the top. But they remain on course to win their first-ever Champions League trophy, and their first European silverware since they lifted the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup in 1994.

Asensio stars as Villa beat Brugge to book PSG showdown

BIRMINGHAM: Marco Asensio starred as Aston Villa beat 10-man Club Brugge 3-0 on Wednesday to book a Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain. Asensio came off the bench to strike twice in the second half of the last-16 second leg at Villa Park. The in-form Spanish forward has netted seven times since joining on loan from PSG in the January transfer window and is set for a reunion with his parent club in the last eight. Brugge had Kyriani Sabbe sent off for a professional foul on Marcus Rashford early in the first half, and Asensio ensured Villa eventually took advantage. Ian Maatsen scored in between Asensio's brace as Unai Emery's side romped to a 6-1 aggregate victory. With Prince William, a noted Villa fan, celebrating in the stands, the Premier League outfit are through to the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition for the first time in 42 years. Their exit against Juventus at that stage in 1982-83 was Villa's last appearance in the European Cup -- the forerunner to the Champions League -- until this season. Emery's men are the first team to reach the Champions League quarter-finals in their debut season in the competition since Atalanta in 2019-20. Wins against Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Celtic are among the Champions League highlights for Emery's men this term. PSG are next in their sights after the Ligue 1 leaders' penalty shoot-out win at Liverpool on Tuesday. Facing PSG in April will have extra meaning for Emery, who spent two turbulent seasons in charge at PSG, winning the French title in 2018 but struggling in the Champions League. It is only the second time Emery has made it past the Champions League last 16 after he took Villarreal to the semi-finals in 2022. A repeat of their famous European Cup-winning campaign in 1982 might prove beyond Villa, but they have created memories of lifetime in their fairytale run this season. Songs of praise As fireworks crackled over Villa Park before kick-off, fans in the Holte End unfurled a huge flag emblazoned with the motto Prepared. It was a message their team initially seemed to ignore. Brugge captain Hans Vanaken glanced a header just wide of the far post in a confident start from the visitors. Raphael Onyedika's goal-bound was blocked by Villa defender Ezri Konsa, a chance that provoked anxious groans from fretting fans. Villa lost 1-0 at Brugge in the league phase and needed two goals in the final eight minutes to take control in the last-16 first leg. But Brugge had never won in England in 14 trips and those nervous Villa supporters need not have worried as the tension was lifted in an instant by Rashford's blistering pace. Accelerating onto Emiliano Martinez's long punt in the 17th minute, Rashford was hauled down by Sabbe on the edge of the area, with the Brugge defender dismissed for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. A giant banner reading Prepared unveiled by Aston Villa supporters is pictured during the last 16 second leg UEFA Champions League football match between Aston Villa and Club Brugge at Villa Park in Birmingham, central England on March 12, 2025. From the free-kick, Youri Tielemans' drive forced Simon Mignolet to make a sprawling save low to his right. Emery made an inspired double substitution at the interval, sending on Asensio and Leon Bailey in a move that paid immediate dividends. The pair combined to break the deadlock in the 50th minute as Bailey's pass reached Asensio inside the Brugge area and he swivelled to finish with aplomb. Asensio should have scored again moments later, but the 29-year-old's shot cannoned back off the post. With Villa fans singing songs of praise to Emery, Maatsen doubled the lead in the 57th minute. Morgan Rogers' nimble footwork worked space for a cross to Maatsen, whose close-range effort deflected past Mignolet. Asensio wrapped up another memorable European night for Villa four minutes later, meeting Rashford's low cross with a clinical finish from six yards.

Dortmund fight back to beat Lille and reach Champions League quarters

LILLE: Borussia Dortmund recovered from losing an early goal to fight back and beat Lille 2-1 in France in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, sealing a 3-2 aggregate victory and a place in the quarter-finals. Jonathan David gave Lille an early lead on the night, putting the French club ahead in the tie after last week's 1-1 first-leg draw. However, Emre Can squared things by converting a penalty for Dortmund on 54 minutes, and Maximilian Beier then fired in a fine winner for last season's runners-up. Dortmund will now face Barcelona in the quarter-finals next month, having already lost 3-2 at home to the Catalans during the league phase in December. The result is a huge boost for Dortmund and their recently-appointed coach Niko Kovac, coming as the club languishes in 10th place in the Bundesliga. For the whole 90 minutes we controlled the game. It was a fantastic performance, Kovac told UEFA.com. He will now come up against a Barcelona side coached by Hansi Flick, his former assistant at Bayern Munich. The result is a massive disappointment for Lille, who were hoping to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history after an outstanding performance during the league phase. They finished seventh out of 36 teams, beating both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on the way, while also holding Juventus and putting six past Feyenoord. 'Frustration for Lille' Their coach Bruno Genesio insisted it had been a satisfying campaign despite the exit, but club president Olivier Letang was unhappy about the decision to award the penalty from which Dortmund equalised. I want to emphasise how good a run we had, even if we are frustrated, before questioning the decision to appoint as referee Sandro Schaerer, a German-speaking Swiss. I don't think it was a penalty and it changed the game, he said. When I saw who was appointed referee, and that he was a German-speaking Swiss, I thought it was a bit strange. And at half-time he was speaking to the Dortmund players exclusively in German. Lille appeared to be in a strong position after coming from behind to draw in Dortmund last week, and they went in front in the tie when Canada forward David scored in the fifth minute. Ismaily's low ball in from the left was swept towards goal by David, somehow going in through the legs of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. It was David's seventh goal in this season's Champions League, but it seemed to galvanise the visitors. They were denied an equaliser by a remarkable double save from Lille 'keeper Lucas Chevalier in the midst of a goalmouth scramble on 20 minutes. Dortmund applied pressure and were rewarded when they won the penalty shortly after half-time as Serhou Guirassy went down under contact from Thomas Meunier. It appeared a soft decision, but Can fired in the spot-kick, and Karim Adeyemi then hit the bar for Dortmund before they found what proved to be the winner on 65 minutes. Guirassy, who has 10 goals in the Champions League this season, was the provider but Beier still had work to do as he controlled the ball in the box before firing a lethal shot high into the net. Lille could not recover from that blow as they went out in the last 16, just like in their two previous appearances at this stage of the competition, in 2007 and 2022.

Cash-strapped Man Utd bank on Europa League lifeline; Ange fights to save Spurs job

MANCHESTER: Manchester United's financial crisis, exposed by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe this week, has heaped more pressure on Ruben Amorim's men to deliver Europa League glory and a return to Champions League revenues next season. United host Real Sociedad on Thursday with their last-16 tie finely poised after a 1-1 draw in Spain last week. The Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League meaning their hopes of salvaging a miserable season depend on European glory. Ahead of announcing plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium to replace Old Trafford on Tuesday, Ratcliffe defended the ruthless cost-cutting he has implemented throughout the club during his first year in charge. United have not yet detailed how they plan to finance the reported 2 billion ($2.6 billion) cost of the new stadium. Last month, the club announced that up to 200 further redundancies were anticipated after 250 jobs were cut last year. Ratcliffe claimed the club would have un out of money at Christmas if we don't do those things in a series of media interviews. The English giants have made cumulative losses of 410 million in the last seven years after a series of expensive mistakes in the transfer market and in managerial hires. However, only once in the past 35 years have they missed out on European football entirely. That fate looks almost certain this season unless United lift the Europa League in Bilbao on May 21. It's massive, said United midfielder Christian Eriksen of the Sociedad game. We know there's a lot of pressure on that game, but it also comes with being at this club. You play for trophies so we have to play well to go through, he added. Sociedad are also dreaming of making the short trip to Bilbao for the final to salvage a disappointing campaign. Imanol Alguacil's men sit 11th in La Liga and lost the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final 1-0 at home to Real Madrid. Postecoglou on the brink Tottenham, 13th in the Premier League, also desperately need Europa League glory to save their season. Rumours suggest manager Ange Postecoglou's job depends on turning around a 1-0 first leg deficit against AZ Alkmaar in London. Postecoglou has been hampered by a lengthy injury list for most of the campaign, but has few excuses with Spurs finally approaching full strength. First-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven made their return in Sunday's 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, while record signing Dominic Solanke played 90 minutes for the first time in nearly two months. We need everyone. From the supporters, players, staff, from the club, we need everybody with that game to turn it around, said Spurs captain Son Heung-min. Quality doesn't bring the wins. The games always need a mentality and the care and the performance. Hard work always matters. We need to be focused, take it seriously, respect our opponent and do everything we can to turn it around, especially at home, he added. Rangers already have one foot in the last eight after a stunning 3-1 first leg win away to Fenerbahce. I don't think it's over, said Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho. The only thing I tell them is, don't celebrate too much. Because there is a second match. It's my only advice. Athletic Bilbao must overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit against Roma to maintain their dream of playing the final in their home stadium. Lazio, Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt are strong favourites to make the quarter-finals after away wins at Viktoria Plzen, FCSB and Ajax respectively last week.

PSG stun Liverpool on penalties to make Champions League quarters

LIVERPOOL: Paris Saint-Germain produced a historic turnaround to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals at Liverpool's expense as they triumphed 4-1 on penalties after a 1-0 second leg win at Anfield. Never in Liverpool's history had they lost a European tie after winning the first leg away from home but Ousmane Dembele's early strike brought the French champions level at 1-1 on aggregate. PSG were then perfect with their four spot-kicks, while Gianluigi Donnarumma saved from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. Luis Enrique said before the game that the winners would progress to the final and PSG will be supremely confident of reaching the semi-finals at least as they will face Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the last eight. Both of the teams deserve to go to the next phase, said PSG boss Luis Enrique. We were better in Paris and they were better here, but I think my team at Anfield, in a special stadium showed great personality and character. A famous victory for the Parisians was deserved over the tie after they dominated the first leg only to be denied by the brilliance of Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal before Harvey Elliott snatched a late winner. The roles were reversed this time as Liverpool were made to rue not making more of their chances. Over 90 minutes we didn't deserve to lose today, over 180 minutes maybe it was deserved, said Liverpool boss Arne Slot. We ran out of luck after last week. Brilliant play by Alexis Mac Allister should have created the opener on four minutes when the Argentine's cross picked out Mohamed Salah, whose goalbound effort was deflected over by Nuno Mendes. PSG took 10 minutes to ride out the storm from the home side before finding their feet. The visitors took the lead on 12 minutes when Ibrahima Konate could only turn Bradley Barcola's cross beyond Alisson to leave Dembele with a simple finish. The French international has now scored 23 goals in his last 17 games and could have had more before the end of the night. PSG who had the better openings to extend their advantage before half-time. Twice Alisson had to be at his sharpest to race off his line and save one-on-ones against Barcola and Dembele. Liverpool's players react during the penalty shoot out during the last 16 second leg UEFA Champions League football match between Liverpool and PSG at Anfield in Liverpool, north west England on March 11, 2025. Quansah hits inside of post PSG beat Liverpool to the signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January and the Georgian proved a constant menace to the Reds' defence. Kvaratskhelia's shot from Dembele's cross was arrowing towards the top corner until a deflection from Ryan Gravenberch took it just over the crossbar. Improved second-half performances have been a common theme of Slot's first season at Liverpool and the hosts came roaring out of the traps after the break. Dominik Szoboszlai had a goal ruled out for offside against Luis Diaz earlier in the move. Szoboszlai then had a goalbound effort blocked by Willian Pacho before Donnarumma made a vital stop from Diaz from the resulting corner. Liverpool's momentum could have been halted by the loss of Trent Alexander-Arnold to a knee injury after the right-back landed awkwardly. But his replacement, Jarell Quansah, was inches away from winning the tie when his header came back off the inside of the post. PSG barely threatened during the second half of the 90 minutes but Liverpool were left hanging on for penalties in extra time. Lucas Beraldo's header and Desire Doue's shot flew just wide before more Alisson heroics kept PSG at bay with a stunning stop to turn Dembele's curling effort round the post. However, Alisson could not save them in the shootout as it was the other goalkeeper who was the hero. Donnarumma produced great saves to deny Nunez and Jones, either side of four confident strikes from Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele and Doue to send PSG into the last eight.

Harry Kane leads Bayern past Leverkusen into Champions League last eight

LEVERKUSEN: Harry Kane scored a goal and set up another as Bayern Munich won 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, going through to the Champions League quarter-finals 5-0 on aggregate. Bayern were comfortable against last season's unbeaten German champions, having already done the damage with a dominant 3-0 win at home in the first leg. With the match scoreless at half-time, Leverkusen rolled the dice in search of the goals they needed but it was Bayern who struck, with Kane waltzing through to tap in a Joshua Kimmich cross early in the second period. With Leverkusen again pushing forward, the visitors added a second in the 71st minute, Alphonso Davies slamming a clever Kane chip low and hard to double Bayern's lead. Kane, so often criticised for going missing in big games and scoring against the minnows, was again commanding, as he had been when scoring a brace in Munich. The England captain showed finesse and physicality as he kept Bayern on track for a dream home final and a chance to exorcise the ghosts of their 2012 Champions League final loss to Chelsea. We didn't want to be a team who dropped off and defended the lead. We wanted to be on the front foot, put pressure on, and create chances to win the game, Kane told Amazon Prime. It's never easy when you have a 3-0 lead. Psychologically, you know. But I think the way we went about it today was a top performance. To beat this team 5-0 over two legs shows the type of team we are. Leverkusen showed spirit despite missing pivotal midfielder Florian Wirtz, but the scale of the task was too high. Eight points behind Bayern in the league, Xabi Alonso's likely last remaining chance for silverware this season is the German Cup, where Leverkusen are through to the final four. Alonso praised his team for fighting until the last minute with pride and dignity, and said ut we didn't lose the tie today -- we made it too difficult for ourselves in the return leg. Bayern with the advantage A month after dominating the same opponents at the same venue but somehow failing to break through, Leverkusen hosted Bayern in drastically different circumstances. Put to the sword in Munich in perhaps the poorest performance of Alonso's 30-month reign six days earlier, Leverkusen needed to turn the tables on Bayern while lacking the injured Wirtz, their best player. After criticism for his team selections in Munich, omitting in-form striker Patrik Schick and putting usual back-up goalkeeper Matej Kovar in goal, Alonso named the Czech up front and put captain Lukas Hradecky back between the sticks. Bayern's Vincent Kompany made only one change, with rookie 'keeper Jonas Urbig replacing injured veteran Manuel Neuer. Kane signalled Bayern's intent early, forcing Hradecky into acrobatic saves twice in the opening 15 minutes. Leverkusen lacked Wirtz and a little fluidity but remained ambitious, with an animated Alonso repeatedly urging them forward from the sideline. Schick, given a total of just 11 minutes in Leverkusen's two previous matches, headed inches wide with 38 minutes gone, the hosts' best chance of the opening half. The second half brought more necessary risk for Leverkusen and Bayern sensed the blood in the water. With 52 minutes gone, Kane got on the end of Kimmich's lofted pass to kill off any remaining Leverkusen hope. Kane then set up Davies to score inside the final 20 minutes, putting Bayern into the last eight and keeping his own personal quest for a team trophy alive on the biggest club football stage of all.

Yamal, Raphinha fire Barcelona past Benfica into Champions League last eight

BARCELONA: Lamine Yamal and Raphinha dazzled as Barcelona thumped Benfica 3-1 on Tuesday, reaching the Champions League quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate. Raphinha netted either side of a stunning Yamal strike as the Catalans dominated in the first half, building on their 1-0 last 16, first leg win in Lisbon. Nicolas Otamendi had quickly levelled Raphinha's opener but the visitors were blown away at the Olympic Stadium as Barcelona progressed comfortably from the tie and produced some moments of brilliant attacking football. Hansi Flick's side will face Borussia Dortmund or Lille in the quarter-finals as they aim to win the competition for the first time since 2015 and the era of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. We are candidates to win everything, Raphinha told Movistar, with the club in the hunt for a potential treble. Barcelona are unbeaten in 17 matches in 2025. It's good that the players think about that (winning everything), it shows they have confidence, they believe in what they are doing, but my job is to stay calm, said Flick. Flick had said Barca would play for late club doctor Carles Minarro, who died suddenly on Saturday ahead of the team's match against Osasuna, which was postponed, and the players observed a silence in his honour before kick-off. What happened made us arrive at this game even more determined to win, added Raphinha. We won for us and Carles is always with us... he always has a place (here), said Flick. Five-time Champions League winners Barca took the lead after 11 minutes when Spain international Yamal burst into the area, chopped his way past Florentino and then mishit the ball across to Raphinha for a simple finish. Benfica levelled within two minutes when Otamendi escaped Ronald Araujo to head home from a corner. Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny excelled in the first leg as the Catalans claimed an impressive win with 10 men after Pau Cubarsi's red card, but might have done more to keep out Otamendi's effort. However Barcelona, and particularly their wingers Yamal and Raphinha, were in sensational form and they quickly reclaimed their lead. 'Dynamite' Yamal netted his first goal in seven matches, but it was worth the wait, with the 17-year-old cutting in from the right and arcing a sensational shot past Anatoliy Trubin and in at the far post from the edge of the box. His goal was spectacular, it shows what Lamine is -- he's a spectacular player with tremendous quality, said Raphinha. Raphinha grabbed his second before the break to give Barcelona a three-goal aggregate lead after a blistering run by Alejandro Balde. The left-back won the ball back in his area and sliced open the Portuguese team on the counter, carrying it to the edge of Benfica's area before teeing up Raphinha. It was the winger's 11th strike of the competition and he leads the scoring charts, while he also has 27 across all competitions after netting 10 in each of his first two seasons after joining from Leeds United. We have dynamite up front and we have to take advantage of it, said Barca midfielder Pedri. Bruno Lage's side were without injured veteran Angel Di Maria but even with him beating Flick's Barca on this form would have been a difficult ask. Fredrik Aursnes netted for Benfica in the second half but the goal was disallowed for offside against Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored a hat-trick as Barca won 5-4 in their first meeting this season, in the league stage in January. For the most part Benfica struggled to trouble Szczesny, and Barcelona came close to scoring a fourth when Frenkie de Jong poked wide on the stretch at the end of a razor-sharp team move. Barcelona now await their quarter-final opponent and can start preparing to visit Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday, in a huge clash in the Spanish title race. Benfica are left to focus on the Portuguese top flight, where they are second behind Sporting Lisbon. We're left with a feeling of frustration, we could have done better in both games, Lage told SportTV.
