Raul Jimenez brace against Panama helps Mexico lift first CONCACAF Nations League trophy
INGLEWOOD: Raul Jimenez scored twice as Mexico snatched a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Panama to win the CONCACAF Nations League for the first time on Sunday. Fulham striker Jimenez -- who had also bagged a brace in a semi-final win over Canada -- slotted a stoppage time penalty to settle a pulsating final battle at SoFi Stadium. Mexico's win was tinged with controversy though, with the final halted by match officials in the closing minutes due to homophobic chanting from Mexican fans. It was the third CONCACAF Nations League final in a row to be stopped due to the offensive chants which have persisted amongst Mexico's fans for years despite repeated CONCACAF attempts to crack down on them. Jimenez, 33, converted the winning spot-kick in the second minute of stoppage time after Panama defender Jose Cordoba needlessly flung an arm out at a cross to concede a handball. Jimenez paid tribute to the impact of Mexico coach Javier Aguirre following the victory. Aguirre, 66, began his third stint as Mexico coach in 2024 after previously leading the side in 2001-2002, and 2009-2010. This is what we wanted from day one, since 'Vasco' (Aguirre) arrived, Jimenez said, referring to the Mexico coach by his popular nickname. These games are tough, but we played the way we should have when they tied us, and there we have it. Jimenez's four-goal contribution to Mexico's Nations League finals campaign was the latest chapter in what has been a fairytale return from injury from the veteran Premier League striker. In 2020, he suffered a life-threatening skull fracture and brain injury during a Premier League match between Arsenal and former club Wolves, later being told by doctors it was a miracle that he survived. It's fantastic to come back after what I've been through, Jimenez said. This is just a great example -- you never, never have to lose the faith. You know what you are capable of. Mexico's Raul Jimenez celebrates after scoring a penalty against Panama during the second half of a CONCACAF Nations League final soccer match Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Inglewood, Calif. Panama heartbreak The defeat was heartbreaking for Panama, who had stunned the United States 1-0 in the semi-finals and were hoping to win their first international tournament since 1951. An entertaining first half saw Panama almost take the lead after six minutes, striker Cecilio Waterman blasting a low shot directly at Mexico goalkeeper Luis Malagon. Instead though it was Mexico who drew first blood two minutes later after another goal from England-based striker Jimenez. Roberto Alvarado found space down the right flank and curled a superb cross in behind the Panama defence which Jimenez stooped to nod home. Jose Luis Rodriguez almost got Panama back on level terms four minutes before half-time only to see his shot heading for the top corner saved by Malagon. Panama didn't have long to wait for the equaliser, which arrived soon afterwards when Mexico's Johan Vasquez caught Waterman with a mistimed challenge in the area. The foul was not spotted immediately but after a lengthy VAR review, referee Mario Escobar pointed to the spot and Adalberto Carrasquilla duly rammed home the spot-kick to make it 1-1. A scrappy second half saw both teams struggle to create clear goalscoring opportunities and as extra-time loomed ever closer, the tension mounted. In the 83rd minute, after warnings from the public address system to cease homophobic chanting by Mexico's fans were ignored, Escobar called a halt to the match under CONCACAF protocols designed to combat the issue. The break in play allowed Panama an opportunity to regroup. But it was Mexico who took advantage, and they got their reward for a late burst of pressure when Cordoba gave away the decisive penalty.

Germany survive Italy scare to make Nations League semi-finals
DORTMUND: Germany survived a spirited second-half fightback from Italy, letting a three-goal lead slip to draw 3-3 in Dortmund on Sunday, before reaching the Nations League semi-finals 5-4 on aggregate. A first-half Joshua Kimmich masterclass, with a penalty and two assists for Jamal Musiala and Tim Kleindienst, had Germany 3-0 up and cruising at the break. However, injury-hit Italy kicked into gear in the second half, Moise Kean scoring a double to rattle the hosts. Italy looked on course to level the scores when they were awarded a penalty with 73 minutes gone, but it was overturned by VAR. Giacomo Raspadori then converted a stoppage time penalty to give Italy a glimmer of hope. The result not only secured Germany a first-ever Nations League semi-final spot, where they will face Portugal, but it means the remainder of the tournament will be held on German soil, in Stuttgart and Munich in June. Despite the second-half scare, the victory continues Germany's resurgence under Julian Nagelsmann. Germany's only loss in their past 17 matches came in extra-time at Euro 2024 against eventual champions Spain in the quarter-finals. Nagelsmann said Germany learned lessons for our development from the game, adding we know how well we can play football -- but we have to show it throughout the game. I'm going home with an understanding of what we're capable of, but it's also nice that we've got a bit more to do, he said. Italy coach Luciano Spalletti admitted his side lacked maturity and said you always learn from games like this. The second half was very good, but we were too afraid to play like that for the whole game. 'Something impossible' Italy travelled to Dortmund, the site of their 2006 World Cup semi-final win over the same opponents, with a mountain to climb. After letting a one-goal lead slip to lose in Milan in the first leg, Italy saw defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Andrea Cambiaso added to an injury list which already included striker Mateo Retegui and left-back Federico Dimarco. Spalletti spoke pre-match of needing to do something impossible and his side were up against it from the get-go as Germany burst out of the blocks. With Musiala on top form and Nico Schlotterback sending in penetrating passes from the deep, Germany's breakthrough came from the spot. Alessandro Buongiorno brought down a surging Kleindienst in the box and Kimmich converted, just the fourth penalty for either club or country in the 30-year-old's career. After an acrobatic save to keep out a Kleindienst header by Gianluigi Donnarumma, the quick-thinking Kimmich played the ball fast from the ensuing corner. The move caught the Italians napping, with Musiala tapping in from close range as the Italian goalkeeper was still remonstrating with the referee. Nagelsmann said the quick thinking was world-class and unbelievably smart, and admitted I didn't see it at all. In the final minute of the half, Donnarumma palmed away a Kleindienst header, but this time could not keep it out, with the home crowd erupting as the referee pointed to his watch to show the ball had crossed the line. Germany dropped in intensity in the second half and the Italians pounced, Kean latching onto a loose ball and blasting home after 49 minutes. Spalletti brought on Raspadori and the Napoli man had an immediate impact, threading a pass for Kean to curl a ball past Oliver Baumann's outstretched arm with 68 minutes played. The stunned Germans were shocked further five minutes later when they conceded a penalty, but the spot kick was overturned by VAR. The Italians did eventually get a spot kick in stoppage time, with Raspadori converting, but it was too late as Germany held on to progress on aggregate.
Spain edge Netherlands on penalties, set up France Nations League semi-final
PARIS: Holders Spain beat the Netherlands on penalties after a dramatic quarter-final second leg in Valencia finished 3-3 on Sunday to set up a Nations League last-four clash with France, who edged Croatia in a shoot-out after a 2-2 aggregate draw. On a dramatic night, Portugal battled past Denmark in extra time and will next face Finals hosts Germany after their tense 5-4 aggregate victory over Italy. European champions Spain took the lead in the tie, after Thursday's 2-2 first-leg draw, when Mikel Oyarzabal picked himself up after being fouled in the box to slot home an early penalty. The Netherlands equalised nine minutes into the second half as Memphis Depay also won and then netted a spot-kick. Oyarzabal grabbed his second in the 67th minute after a strong run forward by Nico Williams, only for the Dutch to level again with 11 minutes remaining through Ian Maatsen's fierce strike. Lamine Yamal struck shortly before the interval in extra time, though, curling the ball into the far corner after a couple of superb touches. There was yet another twist as Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon brought down Xavi Simons, who picked himself up to score. Spain edged home 5-4 in the shoot-out despite a miss from Yamal, as Simon saved from Netherlands winger Donyell Malen and Pedri struck the winning penalty. We're Spain and we don't have to fear anyone, Pedri told TVE of facing 2021 Nations League winners France in the semi-finals in Stuttgart on June 5. France wiped out a two-goal deficit against Croatia at the Stade de France. Michael Olise's brilliant free-kick broke the deadlock on the night in the 52nd minute, before Ousmane Dembele swept Olise's cutback into the bottom corner to send the quarter-final to extra time. Theo Hernandez missed a penalty to win it for France in an eventful shoot-out, but Dayot Upamecano eventually secured a 5-4 success on penalties in sudden death. We woke up thinking it could be a great night, Kylian Mbappe told TF1. We were convinced we were going to do something great. Trincao fires Portugal through Portugal, inspired by substitute Francisco Trincao, battled back after losing the first game 1-0 to win a thrilling last-eight encounter with Denmark 5-3 on aggregate. Cristiano Ronaldo, after a stuttering run-up, produced the tamest of early penalties which was comfortably held by Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Portugal were gifted the lead on the night when Joachim Andersen put through his own net. But the Danes restored their aggregate advantage 11 minutes into the second half through Rasmus Kristensen's excellent header. Ronaldo did get his 136th international goal, though, turning the ball in after Schmeichel tipped Fernandes' shot against the post. But Portugal were caught out in the 76th minute when Christian Eriksen tapped home. The hosts managed to force an added half-hour when Schmeichel's weak punch fell to Mendes, who teed up Trincao to drill a shot into the bottom corner. Trincao netted his second in the first minute of extra time and Goncalo Ramos secured a meeting with Germany in Munich on June 4. Germany hold off Italy fightback Julian Nagelsmann's Germans survived an Italy comeback to win 5-4 on aggregate after a 3-3 draw in Dortmund. Germany extended their overall advantage on the half-hour mark when Joshua Kimmich tucked home a spot-kick before playing a key role in a bizarre second goal. Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma left his goal after making a save to complain at the referee and Kimmich took a quickly-taken corner which was flicked into an empty net by Jamal Musiala. Tim Kleindienst nodded in Kimmich's clipped cross on the stroke of half-time, but Moise Kean scored twice to give Italy a glimmer of hope heading into the last 20 minutes. Giacomo Raspadori converted a penalty in injury time to equalise on the night, but there was not long enough left for the Azzurri. A football game is never perfect, but it was some unbelievable football, and the best I've seen us play, Germany coach Nagelsmann said. Elsewhere, Belgium narrowly avoided relegation to League B as two late goals from Romelu Lukaku helped them overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against Ukraine with a 3-0 victory.
France beat Croatia on penalties to reach Nations League semi-finals
SAINT DENNIS: Goalkeeper Mike Maignan saved twice in the shoot-out as France beat Croatia 5-4 on penalties on Sunday after their UEFA Nations League quarter-final tie had ended 2-2 on aggregate, sealing a place in the last four in June. Les Bleus won 2-0 on the night with goals in normal time by Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele at the Stade de France to wipe out their deficit from Thursday's first leg. With no further scoring in extra time the tie went to penalties, where Maignan saved from both Martin Baturina and Josip Stanisic, while Franjo Ivanovic also missed for the visitors. Jules Kounde and Theo Hernandez both failed to convert for the hosts, but Dayot Upamecano scored when he became the seventh France player to step up, sparking scenes of celebrations on the pitch and in the crowd of 77,502. We woke up thinking it could be a great night. We were convinced we were going to do something great, captain Kylian Mbappe told broadcaster TF1. And we know when it comes to penalties that we have a goalkeeper who can make the difference. France, who won the Nations League in 2021, will now take on title-holders Spain in the semi-finals in Stuttgart in Germany on June 5, with the winners advancing to the final in Munich three days later. Germany will face Portugal in Munich in the other last-four tie. Getting to the final is an objective, Mbappe added. These are the kind of matches you want to play in and there is a title up for grabs. Croatia, who lost on penalties to Spain in the final of the last Nations League in 2023, will now instead start their qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup in June. They will go into qualifying Group L with the Czech Republic, Montenegro, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar, who they will face first on June 6. It was a very difficult night for us. We were not able to repeat our performance from the first leg, admitted Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic. It is good experience for us for the future. The aim now is to get to the World Cup and I think we can do it. France's progress to the final stages of the Nations League means they will not begin their World Cup qualifying campaign until September, when they will be in Group D with Ukraine, Iceland and Azerbaijan. Both sides were eyeing silverware in the Nations League and Croatia held the upper hand after triumphing 2-0 in the first leg in Split. Mbappe draws blank again Nevertheless France, whose coach Didier Deschamps will step down in 2026 after 14 years in charge, were hoping for a comeback similar to their famous recovery against Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying play-off in 2013. They won that after overturning a 2-0 first-leg loss with a 3-0 victory in the return at the Stade de France. Here Deschamps made five changes from the first leg, with Bayern Munich duo Upamecano and Olise among those coming into the team. They pinned Croatia back from the off in this latest repeat of the 2018 World Cup final won by the French, but it took them until the 52nd minute to get the breakthrough. Olise was the scorer, finding the net with a marvellous free-kick from just outside the box following a foul on Mbappe, for his first goal in a France shirt. Mbappe then saw his shot from Dembele's low cross flash just wide on 75 minutes before the hosts levelled the tie on aggregate 10 minutes from time. Mbappe found Olise and his cutback was swept in first-time by Dembele. France took the momentum with them into extra time where Mbappe twice forced saves from Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. Mbappe has now failed to score in his last seven games for his country and has found the net just once in his last 10 appearances in a France shirt, from a penalty against Poland at Euro 2024. The Real Madrid superstar did score in the shoot-out, however, converting France's first penalty. Aurelien Tchouameni, Randal Kolo Muani and Desire Doue also scored for the hosts before Upamecano's winner.
Awful season a wake-up call for Kerala Blasters
KOCHI: Kerala Blasters FC have endured a forgettable Indian Super League season, finishing a disappointing eighth and missing out on the playoffs. A campaign that began with promise unravelled quickly, leaving the team with more losses than wins. With eight victories, five draws, and eleven defeats, the Blasters also conceded a staggering 37 goals far from the standards expected of a club that prides itself on passionate fan support and high player investments. Despite being one of ISLs most financially backed teams, criticism has poured in from all quarters, questioning both the quality and motivation of the squad. A mid-season coach change, departure of key players, and underwhelming performances from star signings have all contributed to the teams woes. The club has plans to revive interest among its loyal fans by bringing in sweeping changes: a special coach to be announced soon, bringing in exciting new players, and the introduction of a multi-city format for home games. Unmet expectations What we saw in the beginning was a team struggling to find its footing under a new coach, former India international and ex-Kerala Blasters midfielder N P Pradeep told TNIE. There were high expectations from certain players, but they failed to deliver. The new signings did not click and our home matches became a major letdown. We barely put pressure on opponents and made far too many silly mistakes. Consistency, according to Pradeep, is a crucial element missing from the Blasters approach. We need players who are motivated to perform steadily throughout the season. Fanbase on the brink of frustration For a club that has never lifted a major trophy despite being a dominant presence in Indian football, the disappointment runs deep. Manjappada, the clubs official fan group, has remained loyal for 11 years, but their patience is wearing thin. The usual electric atmosphere at home games turned into waves of frustration, culminating in large-scale protests inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. What we need is a champion team, said a Manjappada representative. And that means excellence at every level management, medical staff, coaching, and players. We dont want a team that settles for playoffs. Weve been fed false promises for too long. the fans would expect a tactically and technically improved unit | File Pic Total overhaul on the horizon Kerala Blasters CEO Abhik Chatterjee admitted the team has fallen well short of expectations but promised a significant transformation. The team is not where it should be not even close to the bare minimum of what we deserve, Chatterjee said. We understand the frustration among fans. And were planning a complete restructuring across all departments team recruitment, technical staff, marketing, and more to fix the root issues in the long run. The club is also on the verge of finalising a new head coach, someone they believe can bring fresh energy and tactical discipline. We are in the final stages of discussions for a special individual. The appointment will be confirmed soon, Chatterjee said. With the Super Cup up next, the Blasters will be hoping for a redemption arc. A full-strength squad is set to compete, and for fans, this will be the first glimpse of whether the club has truly learnt from its missteps or if the cycle of disappointment continues.
