Germany, Netherlands draw as Nations League group stage ends

PARIS: Germany rounded off their Nations League group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw in Hungary after a Dominik Szoboszlai penalty in the 99th minute rescued a point for the hosts, while the Netherlands were held to the same scoreline by Bosnia and Hercegovina. There was little to play for in Group A3 going into the final day. The Germans had already wrapped up top spot. The Dutch were secure in second and Hungary sat four points ahead of the already-relegated Bosnia. With a win, we would've gone into the break with a nicer feeling but we can still be very satisfied about what we achieved in 2024 and can kick things off again in March, said German midfielder Robert Andrich. In Group B4, a 4-1 victory for Wales against Iceland ensured automatic promotion to the top division at the expense of Turkey, who went down 3-1 in Montenegro. Czech Republic booked the top spot in Group B1 with a 2-1 win over Georgia. Ukraine leapfrogged the Georgians into second place by downing Albania. In Budapest, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann rang the changes with his team having confirmed top spot last week with a 7-0 thumping of Bosnia. Felix Nmecha broke a goalless stalemate when he prodded home from inside the six-yard box with 14 minutes remaining. Hungary's Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates after scoring his side's first goal from the penalty spot during the Nations League soccer match between Hungary and Germany at the Puskas Arena stadium in Budapest, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2024. Germany seemed set to close out their fifth win in six outings until the seventh minute of injury time. VAR decided that Robin Koch had committed a handball in the box and Hungarian captain Szoboszlai stepped up two minutes later to dink home from 12 yards. It's been a real rollercoaster of a year, but I believe that with this match we can go into 2025 in good spirits, said Szoboszlai. Netherlands finished five points behind their historic rivals as they were held to a draw in Zenica. Brian Brobbey headed in the opener for Ronald Koeman's side midway through the first period but despite dominating the rest of the half the Dutch were unable to double their lead. The Oranje were made to pay in the 67th minute when Hamburg-born Bosnian attacker Ermedin Demirovic adjusted his body magnificently to nod a rebound over goalkeeper Mark Flekken. I'm not satisfied with a point. I think we had to win, said Koeman. 'Really happy' Wales bounced back from an early Andri Gudjohnsen goal in Cardiff to put four past Iceland and jump to first place in their group. It's something we set out to do, Wales' Liam Cullen told Sgorio. We knew we couldn't control what was going on in the Turkey game, but we really wanted to put our stamp on this game and win convincingly, so really happy that we've done that. Cullen scored a double to put the hosts in front by half-time, before Brennan Johnson and Harry Wilson put the seal on the match inside the final half-hour. Wales needed victory to have any chance of obtaining automatic promotion to League A, but they needed Montenegro's upset of Turkey to claim that spot with a one-point buffer. Nikola Krstovic's hat-trick in Niksic condemned Turkey to the play-off spot as Montenegro picked up their first points of the campaign after five consecutive defeats. Two 2-1 wins flipped Group B1 on its head after three points had separated the four teams going into the final matchday. Ukraine were fourth before their trip to Tirana but two goals in the first 10 minutes from Oleksandr Zinchenko and Roman Yaremchuk gave them the perfect start. Zinchenko celebrated his opener by holding up a shirt printed 1000, marking one thousand days since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A Nedim Bajrami penalty gave Albania hope in the last quarter of an hour but the Ukrainians held on to claim second spot. The Czechs had sat top of the group on eight points and consolidated top spot when first-half strikes by Pavel Sulc and Adam Hlozek were enough to give them a 2-1 home win over Georgia. In League C, Sweden showcased their striking prowess with a 6-0 thumping of Azerbaijan as they emphatically topped their group. Much-heralded 26-year-old striker Viktor Gyokeres netted four goals in the rout, with Dejan Kulusevski grabbing a brace.

Argentina beat Peru as Uruguay hold Brazil

MONTEVIDEO: A magnificent volley from Lautaro Martinez was enough to give world champions Argentina a 1-0 win over Peru while Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Uruguay in South American World Cup qualifying on Tuesday. Argentina remain on top of the CONMEBOL standings with their qualification for the 2026 tournament surely just a matter of time. It was far from a vintage performance from Lionel Scaloni's team, but a moment of magic from Inter Milan's Martinez proved decisive at the 'Bombonera' stadium in Buenos Aires. Lionel Messi floated in a cross from the left and Martinez leapt into the air, leaning back as he cracked a thundering left-footed volley past Pedro Gallese. Argentina's eighth win from 12 games leaves them on 25 points at the top of the table, five points ahead of Uruguay who earned a valuable point at Brazil. Five-times World Cup winners Brazil laboured for long stretches of the game in Salvador and fell behind to a fine finish from Uruguay's Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde in the 55th minute. But seven minutes later Brazil equalised when a headed clearance fell kindly to Gerson who smashed home a perfectly-struck volley. Gabriel Martinelli went close to a winner when he showed a deft touch to switch feet before a volley which brought a fine save out of Sergio Rochet. The draw leaves Brazil in fifth on 18 points, a point behind fourth-placed Colombia who suffered an upset 1-0 home defeat to Ecuador in Barranquilla. Brazil's midfielder #15 Gerson celebrates after scoring a goal during the 2026 FIFA World Cup South American qualifiers football match between Brazil and Uruguay at the Arena Fonte Nova stadium in Salvador, Brazil, on November 19, 2024. Paraguay held, Chile win Veteran striker Enner Valencia stunned the home crowd with an outstanding solo effort in the seventh minute, the former West Ham United forward breaking away from three Colombian defenders and powering into the box before slotting home. Colombia forward Jhon Cordoba then missed a golden opportunity to level the score, stumbling off balance and missing from point blank range after being set up by James Rodriguez. Cordoba was central to the 34th minute incident that left Ecuador short-handed for the rest of the game. The gangly striker raced clear and rounded Ecuador keeper Hernan Galindez before going down as Piero Hincapie closed in on him. The referee ruled that Hincapie had tripped the forward and despite lengthy appeals and a VAR review the decision stood. Galindez was then alert to keep out the resulting free-kick from Rodriguez and the keeper then had a busy end to the half as Colombia peppered his goal. Liverpool winger Luis Diaz headed a Daniel Munoz cross against the post and Galindez did well to smother Cordoba at close range. Colombia grew increasingly frustrated as Ecuador's defence held firm in the second half with Galindez parrying to keep out substitute Jhon Duran and the unfortunate Cordoba blasted the loose ball high and wide from a tight angle. Elsewhere Tuesday, Paraguay earned a 2-2 draw at Bolivia with the home side going ahead in the 15th minute with a confident strike from Ervin Vaca. Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron levelled for Paraguay in the 71st minute with a clinical finish after a smart passing move across the box. Bolivia restored their lead nine minutes later with a Miguel Terceros penalty after Gustavo Gomez brought down Lucas Chavez in the box. Both benches got involved in protests and Bolivian sub Adalid Terrazas and Paraguay's Diego Gomez, who had been substituted, were both shown red cards. Paraguay grabbed a point in stoppage time in some style with a magnificent solo effort from Julio Enciso who dribbled from deep before unleashing a thundering drive from 20 yards out. Ninth-placed Chile have a lot of work to do if they are to make one of the six automatic qualifcation spots but boosted their faint hopes with a 4-2 thrashing of Venzeula.

Viktor Gykeres overtakes Erling Haaland to be Nations League top scorer

STOCKHOLM: Sweden forward Viktor Gykeres netted four goals Tuesday in a 6-0 rout of Azerbaijan to overtake Erling Haaland as the top scorer in the Nations League. Gykeres started the evening with five goals from five Nations League games. His third goal of the night in the 58th minute scored only a few seconds after the game restarted following another Swedish goal took the Sporting Lisbon forward to eight goals in six games in this edition of the Nations League, one more than Haaland. Gykeres one of the most in-demand players in world soccer this season didn't stop there and added his fourth goal of the game soon after. Haaland had been the top scorer ahead of the final evening of games after the Manchester City striker scored seven goals for Norway, including a hat trick in a 5-0 win over Kazakhstan on Sunday. Gykeres was involved in the build-up for Kulusevski's opening goal and scored his first goal in the 25th off a cross from Kulusevski. His second came in the 37th from a tight angle after being forced wide by a defender. Gykeres completed his hat trick in unusual style from Azerbaijan's kickoff. Kulusevski had just scored and Azerbaijan played the ball back to defender Zamig Aliyev from the restart, but Aliyev making his debut was put under pressure by Gykeres and let the ball run loose, leaving an easy finish. Gykeres scored again in the 70th off a cross from Anton Saletros.

Pulisic scores twice, US beats Jamaica 4-2 for 5-2 aggregate win in CONCACAF Nations League QF

ST. LOUIS: Mauricio Pochettino had a message for American players after a 5-2 aggregate win over Jamaica gave the three-time defending champion United States a berth in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals. My advice is look after yourself. We need to be stronger in March, Pochettino said. We need to be desperate to arrive to March and to be all together. That is a sign that we improve a lot and then we start to feel that we are a real group of people, that we are going to fight for something special. Christian Pulisic scored twice in the first half, Tim Weah got a goal in his return to the U.S. national team from a red card and the Americans beat Jamaica 4-2 on Monday night in the quarterfinal series finale. We came out really hot, Pulisic said. We should definitely feel good after these results. Were obviously learning a lot of new things obviously with the new coach. Pochettino has led the team in two windows sincereplacing Gregg Berhalterfollowing first-round elimination at the Copa America. Just six camps with the top player pool remain before Pochettino picks his 2026 World Cup roster, the next ahead of aMarch 20 semifinal at Inglewood, California. Building our way up for the World Cup at home. I think thats the main goal, Weah said. I think we're on the right track. The U.S. dominated with 68% possession and a 16-9 advantage in shots. The Americans also qualified for next year's CONCACAF Gold Cup, while Jamaica will have to play in qualifying. Pulisic put the U.S. ahead in the 13th minute when he ran onto a long, looping pass from Weston McKennie andone-timed the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Andre Blake. Pulisic doubled the lead off a pass from McKennie that Tanner Tessmann dummied in the 33rd minute.Pulisics shot deflected in off DiShon Bernardfor his 33rd international goal and sixth multigoal game. Ricardo Pepi, who scored off a Pulisic pass in theopening leg in Kingston on Thursday, boosted the lead to 3-0 in the 42nd with his 13th goal, a right-foot shot for his first international goal from outside the penalty area. Demarai Gray scored the first of his two goals for Jamaica with a volley past goalkeeper Matt Turner in the 53rd. Weah, who hit a post in the fourth minute, put the U.S. ahead 4-1 in the 56th when he settled a pass from Yunus Musah and sent a shot just under the crossbar for his seventh goal. Croatia, Denmark qualify for Nations League quarterfinals with draws Gray scored off a rebound in the 68th for his seventh goal and second brace, after Turner parried Renaldo Cephas initial shot. Weah started in place of injured Johnny Cardoso after completing a two-game suspension for ared card against Panama in the Copa America last summer. That was the only change made by Pochettino from the first leg. Defender Tim Ream, at 37 the oldest player on the roster, captained the Americans in his hometown of St. Louis. Jamaica coach Steve McLaren, a former England manager, told the media that star Michail Antonio wasnt available because he lost his passport and couldnt get a U.S. visa. In other games Panama reached the semifinals, beating Costa Rica 3-2 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw in Panama City. Csar Blackman scored in the 13th minute and Jos Rodrguez in the third minute of first-half stoppage time for the hosts. Los Ticos got goals from Alejandro Bran in the 24th and Adrin Martnez in the 72nd. Panama finished a man short after Fidel Escobar's 80th-minute red card. On Tuesday, Mexico is at home trying to overturn a 2-0 first-leg loss at Honduras, and Canada is home with a 1-0 lead against Suriname. Next U.S. match The Americans open their 2025 schedule with afriendly against Venezuela on Jan. 18at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The game is not on a FIFA international fixture date, so the teams will be without most Europe-based regulars.

Croatia, Denmark qualify for Nations League quarterfinals with draws

MADRID: Denmark and Croatia completed the Nations League quarterfinals lineup after both sides secured draws on Monday. Denmark went 0-0 in Serbia, and Croatia came from behind to share 1-1 with visiting Portugal. They joined France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands in the last eight. The quarterfinals will be held from March 20-23. In Warsaw, Liverpool fullback Andy Robertson scored an injury time header to give Scotland a 2-1 win over Poland and send the host down into League B. Scotland has a playoff to secure its League A status. Northern Ireland will step up to League B after topping its group. Northern Ireland let slip a two-goal lead but drew in Luxembourg 2-2. Romania hammered Cyprus 4-1. San Marino will jump into Group C after beating Lichtenstein 3-1. Scotland wins again After going nine matches without a win, Scotland appeared rejuvenated as it condemned a Robert Lewandowski-less Poland to League B. Scotland took just one point from its first four games in Group A1 but beat Croatia at home on Friday and was 1-0 up after three minutes in Warsaw. Billy Gilmours threaded pass found Ben Doak, who rolled the ball to John McGinn to score his second goal in four days. Scotland hit the woodwork twice in the first half and its inability to open a greater lead almost cost it when Kamil Pitkowski lashed a stunning strike into the top corner of the net to equalize 14 minutes into the second period. However, Scotland pushed forward for a winner and Robertson headed the decider in the third minute of stoppage time. Croatia struggle Croatia needed only a draw to secure qualification but it made the home fans in Split sweat before getting the point it needed against group winner Portugal. With 32 minutes gone, Joo Felix brought down a superb 45-yard pass from Vitinha and slipped the ball under the advancing keeper to give the visitors the lead. When Andrej Kramari hit the post and Josko Gvardiol had a 62nd minute goal ruled out for offside it looked like it might not be Croatias night. Bu Manchester Citys Gvardiol got the equalizer just a few minutes later and Croatia held on to take the second quarterfinal spot from Group A1. Rabiot brace fires France past Italy and top of Nations League group Spain beats Switzerland There was little to play for in Tenerife, where Spain, top of Group A4, took on the already relegated Switzerland. Coach Luis de la Fuente offered a first start to Barcelona midfielder Marc Casad and gave debuts to Samu and Aitor Paredes in a much-changed Spain side. But it was the two Bryans, Gil and Zaragoza, who got the goals that mattered for the European champions. Pedris first half penalty was saved but Yeremi Pino converted to put Spain ahead. Joel Monteiro equalized for Switzerland after 63 minutes but Bryan Gil got Spain back in front five minutes later. Andi Zeqiri equalized again from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining but a stoppage time penalty from Bryan Zaragoza at the other end gave Spain all three points. Denmark draws in Serbia In Leskovac, Serbia controlled most of the game against Denmark but could not get the goal it needed to progress from Group A4. Duan Vlahovi was in fine form for the home side but the Danes held out to take second spot, eight points behind winner Spain but two ahead of the Serbs, for which Strahinja Pavlovi was sent off near the end. Northern Ireland steps up Northern Ireland finished on top of Group C3 even though it blew a 2-0 lead in Luxembourg. Isaac Price opened the scoring after 19 minutes and the Standard Liege midfielder set up Conor Bradley for the second five minutes into the second half. The opener was Northern Irelands 100th under coach Michael ONeill. However, even though the home side scored twice in the last 18 minutes, Northern Ireland ended its campaign with 11 points, two ahead of Bulgaria, which drew at home with Belarus 1-1. Luxembourg finished last. Romania and Kosovo win Romania finished on top of Group C2 with a 4-1 win over Cyprus. Daniel Brligea put Romania ahead after two minutes and Rzvan Marin scored twice before Florinel Coman made it four. Ioannis Pittas got Cyprus goal and the Cypriots' Konstantinos Laifis was sent off 13 minutes from time. Kosovo beat Lithuania 1-0 with an early goal from Muharrem Jashari, who was also sent off on the stroke of halftime. Kosovo finished second, three points behind Romania, but an asterisk remains over the final placings following the abandonment of Fridays match between the teams in Bucharest. The Kosovo players alleged they were victims of pro-Serbian chants by the home fans and walked off the field in the final minute. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings. San Marino advances San Marino will go into Group C at the expense of Gibraltar after beating Lichtenstein 3-1. Gibraltar started the day in pole position with six points but San Marino recovered from being 1-0 down at halftime to score three times in the second half. Victory also lifted San Marino within reach of a place in the World Cup qualifying playoffs.

England rout Ireland to earn Nations League promotion in Carsley farewell

LONDON: England clinched Nations League promotion with a 5-0 rout of Ireland as Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis scored their first international goals to bring a successful end Lee Carsley's reign. Shrugging off a lacklustre first half performance, England ran riot after the break at Wembley on Sunday to secure the victory they needed to return to League A. Three goals in the space of five minutes and 36 seconds did the damage in Carsley's last game before Thomas Tuchel takes over on an 18-month contract from January 1. Harry Kane, back in the team after being dropped to the bench for Thursday's win against Greece, opened the floodgates with a penalty conceded by Ireland defender Liam Scales, who was sent off for a second booking. Newcastle winger Gordon, Atletico Madrid midfielder Gallagher, West Ham forward Bowen and Southampton defender Harwood-Bellis all netted for the first time in an England shirt. England's stylish show ensured first place in Group B2, after five wins from six matches under Carsley. Carsley, who will return to his previous role as England Under-21 manager, plans to speak with former Bayern Munich boss Tuchel to alk through the players the German will inherit for next year's World Cup qualifiers. And the 50-year-old, who replaced Gareth Southgate following the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, will be able to deliver a largely glowing review of England's strength in depth after handing out eight debuts since September. Nine of the stars called up by Carsley withdrew from the squad amid suggestions they had been persuaded by their club managers to avoid risking injuries during a busy time of the season. England captain Kane had said he was unhappy about the amount of withdrawals. But the stay-aways, including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold, were not missed as Carsley steered England out of the Nations League second tier before handing the reins to Tuchel. England goal spree Jeers for both national anthems before kick-off provided an antagonistic backdrop to a match between two countries with a troubled political history. The enmity in the stands was a stark contrast to the tepid fare on the pitch as England found it impossible to prise open Ireland's massed defence in the first half. But the Irish have never won at Wembley and last beat England in the 1988 European Championship, so perhaps it was no surprise they wilted after the interval. Having failed to muster a shot on target in the first half, England finally started their goal spree in the 53rd minute. Picked out by Kane's lofted pass, Bellingham was set to shoot from close range before Scales tripped the Real Madrid midfielder. Scales was given his marching orders and Kane converted the penalty in typically assured fashion. Gordon doubled rampant England's advantage three minutes later with a goal with deep Tyneside roots. Tino Livramento was making his first England start and the Newcastle right-back marked the occasion with an assist as his deflected cross reached Magpies team-mate Gordon, who volleyed home from seven yards. Gallagher put the result beyond doubt in the 58th minute, poking home from virtually on the goal-line after Marc Guehi flicked on a cross. Bowen struck with his first touch after coming on, steering in a fine finish from the edge of the area in the 76th minute. Harwood-Bellis met Bellingham's cross with an emphatic header three minutes later as England gave Tuchel a welcome glimpse of the vast array of talent at his disposal.

Rabiot brace fires France past Italy and top of Nations League group

MILAN: Adrien Rabiot fired France to first place in their Nations League group with a headed brace in Sunday's 3-1 win over Italy at the San Siro. Ex-Juventus midfielder Rabiot netted from Lucas Digne set-pieces in each half at the home of his former Milanese rivals to ensure that Les Bleus leapfrogged Italy into top spot in Group A2 on goal difference, with both teams already in the quarter-finals before kick-off. Digne -- like Rabiot making his 50th appearance for his country -- was also crucial to France's second goal, as it was his stunning free-kick in the 33rd minute which crashed out off the woodwork and into the net off Italy goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. France were on their way to top spot when Digne forced home via Vicario's back as they needed to win by at least two goals to move above Italy. Andrea Cambiaso's neat first-time finish moments after Digne's strike put Italy back on top on head-to-head record, due to their 3-1 win in Paris back in September. But Rabiot stepped up in the 65th minute to give France a positive end to what has been a tumultuous international break, with captain Kylian Mbappe left at home with little explanation from coach Didier Deschamps and a fraught goalless draw with Israel at the Stade de France on Thursday. It had been a while since we'd put in a performance like that. The fight and the team spirit should be highlighted, Rabiot said to TF1. This is the true face of the French national team. A tally of 13 points from a group including France and Belgium seemed unlikely for Italy in the aftermath of their dreadful European Championship title defence in Germany. Italy 'lacking quality' And the renewed enthusiasm for the national team was clear among the more than 68,000 fans at the San Siro, with the majority of the empty seats located in the sparsely-populated away section given to the French supporters. France were the better team but created very little from open play, while Cambiaso's strike was the result of a fine passing move and excellent work from Federico Dimarco, whose give-and-go with Sandro Tonali ended with a teasing cross for the Juventus winger to tuck home. And substitute Moise Kean came close to reclaiming top spot for Italy deep in stoppage time when his stinging shot was well-saved by AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, one of a number of players competing in familiar surroundings. We lacked quality today, we didn't make good choices and we made mistakes with the ball, said Spalletti to RAI. You could see the team spirit out there. The defeat could cause us to lose some confidence but it shouldn't take away from what we've built. The last six goals Italy have conceded have come from set-pieces, a fragility which is unusual for the traditionally defence-minded Azzurri and was exacerbated by an underwhelming display from Vicario. Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario started in place of captain Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was left out before kick-off reportedly because of a stomach bug. Donnarumma has been a frequent target of fans at the San Siro since his big-money move from AC Milan to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

Netherlands into Nations League quarter-finals as Germany hit record seven

PARIS: Netherlands outclassed Hungary with a 4-0 victory in their winner-takes-all Nations League encounter on Saturday while record-setting Germany hammered Bosnia and Hercegovina 7-0. Netherlands and Hungary went into the match tied on five points each and with the winner set to join Germany in ensuring their progress from Group A3 to the quarter-finals. First-half penalties by Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo sent the Oranje on their way, before Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners made the game safe in the second period. There are always things we can improve upon, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk told SBS6. But in the end, we deserved to win. The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena was briefly interrupted in the seventh minute following a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench. The referee stopped play for some 10 minutes while Hungary's assistant coach Adam Szalai received treatment, shielded from view by huddled players and staff members, as well as a large white sheet. Szalai, 36, was stretchered off to applause from spectators and players alike, the Hungarian FA later released a statement saying he was conscious and in a stable condition at an Amsterdam hospital. It was a scare of course, Gakpo told NOS. Fortunately, I just heard he regained consciousness on the pitch. Things like this are more important than football. Almost forgotten in the aftermath of the worrying incident was the handball by Tamas Nikitscher as the ball was crossed into the Hungarian box. The referee consulted the touchline video monitor and promptly restarted play by pointing to the spot, allowing Weghorst to sweep the Netherlands in front. Denes Dibusz was the busier of the two goalkeepers as the first period wore on and had to be alert to keep out efforts from Tijjani Reijnders and Donyell Malen. In the 11th minute of added time, Dutch dominance told and Malen was clipped by Zsolt Nagy in the box. Gakpo dispatched the resulting spot-kick, sending Dibusz the wrong way and Netherlands into a two-goal lead. Right-back Dumfries sealed the Netherlands' spot in the quarters as he latched onto Malen's flick-on at the back post and fizzed a volley back into the far corner shortly after the hour. Koopmeiners marked his first international match since 2022 by nodding in a fourth in the 86th minute. 'Good fun' Germany cemented their spot at the top of the group with a 7-0 win over Bosnia -- the heaviest in the six-year history of the Nations League. It was good fun tonight. After a couple of goals we did the work defensively and then everything came together offensively. The more that happens, the more fun we have on the pitch, German attacker Jamal Musiala told UEFA's website. Musiala opened the floodgates after two minutes with a header from Joshua Kimmich's cross. Tim Kleindienst scored his first goal for Germany in the 23rd minute and Kai Havertz made the game safe eight minutes before the break, slotting home after a slick one-two with Florian Wirtz. Wirtz then made it four on 50 minutes with a sublime swerving free-kick from wide on the left, before doubling up seven minutes later. Seeing Flo (Wirtz's) free-kick was kind of nice but just in general everyone played well, had good moments. We're just playing good football, added Musiala. Substitute Leroy Sane scored Germany's sixth in the 66th minute and Kleindienst completed the rout just over 10 minutes from time as he guided home a pinpoint cross from centre-half Antonio Rudiger. The emphatic result leaves Germany five points ahead of Netherlands with only one match left to play. In Group B1, Georgia played out a 1-1 draw at home to Ukraine and stay two points ahead of the fourth-placed visitors. The Czech Republic drew 0-0 in Albania and remain top of the group on eight points, one ahead of Georgia in second and their third-placed opponents. Turkey stayed top of Group B4 with a 0-0 draw at home to Wales, while Iceland beat Montenegro 2-0. Turkey were presented with a golden opportunity to grow their two-point lead over Wales but Kerem Akturkoglu sent his 89th-minute penalty wide.
