Premier League Matchweek 5: Haaland, Liverpool, Arsenal and more headline key storylines
Digital Desk | New Delhi, Sep 17 (IANS) The 2026/27 Premier League season is only four rounds old, but Matchweek 5 already offers several intriguing statistical narratives. Manchester City are chasing a fifth straight victory, Arsenal are attempting to extend their winning run to 10 league matches, while Liverpool head into their meeting with Bournemouth looking to turn a run of draws into victories. Elsewhere, Bournemouth's extraordinary draw record in 2026 and Erling Haaland's unusual scoring record against Sunderland provide two of the weekend's standout talking points. Brentford v Chelsea Brentford are still searching for their first Premier League home win over Chelsea, having drawn four of their previous five meetings at the Gtech Community Stadium. Ten of Brentford's last 14 league matches have also ended in draws, while they are unbeaten in their last six. Chelsea, meanwhile, have won only one of their last six away league matches. Their opening five games have produced 19 goals, more than those of any other side. The set-piece numbers could prove significant, with Brentford recording 2.34 set-piece xG excluding penalties, the second-highest figure in the division. Chelsea have conceded 1.57 set-piece xG. Joo Pedro leads the league for goal involvements with six, including three goals and three assists. Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Tottenham and Aston Villa have not played out a draw in their last 22 Premier League meetings, with Spurs winning 15 and Villa seven. Villa have won four of their last six league visits to Tottenham, despite winning only three of their previous 21 trips. Spurs, meanwhile, have opened the campaign with consecutive 0-0 draws, as many goalless draws in their last two matches as in their previous 181 league games. Villa are still without a victory this season, matching only three previous five-game winless starts in their top-flight history. Tottenham also have three players ,Mathys Tel, Omar Marmoush and Svio ,among the six league players with at least nine completed take-ons. Svio became the first player this season to complete four take-ons and create four open-play chances in the same match against Everton. Brighton v Arsenal Arsenal arrive at the Amex on a nine-match Premier League winning streak, conceding only twice during that run. Victory would take them to 10 consecutive league wins, a feat they have achieved only on a handful of occasions in their Premier League history. Brighton have scored 13 goals so far, the most in the division, with nine coming in their two victories. They have also registered 41 high turnovers, another league-leading figure. Arsenal have conceded just 2.7 xG across their opening four matches, the lowest total in the division. Bukayo Saka has scored on each of his last three league visits to Brighton and has five goal involvements across six away appearances against the Seagulls. There is also a creative battle between Pascal Gro and Martin degaard. Gro has created 13 chances this season and degaard 12, while both have created 11 from open play. Everton v Ipswich Town Everton are unbeaten after four matches, their best start since 2021/22. They last went unbeaten through their opening five games in 2020/21. Ipswich have collected six points despite conceding 10 goals. They are only the third Premier League side to reach six points after conceding at least 10 in their first four matches. Jordan Pickford recorded his 100th Premier League clean sheet in the goalless draw against Tottenham, moving into an elite group alongside the likes of Ederson and Alisson. Ipswich forward Zian Flemming has scored 12 Premier League goals in 31 appearances, with a goal every 152 minutes across the last two seasons, a rate bettered by only three players with at least 10 goals in that period. Leeds United v Crystal Palace Leeds have collected eight points from their first four matches, their best start since 2001/02. A victory would give them their joint-best points tally after five games. Crystal Palace, however, have conceded at least twice in each of their last 10 Premier League matches. They have also faced the division's highest xG at 8.15, conceded 11 goals and allowed 164 opposition touches in their own box. Leeds forward Noah Okafor has seven goals and one assist in his last 11 league appearances, contributing a goal or assist every 79 minutes during that stretch. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored in each of his last five Premier League home appearances for Leeds. Another goal would make him only the second Leeds player to score in six consecutive home league appearances, following Mark Viduka's run between March and August 2003. Manchester City v Sunderland Manchester City have won all four matches so far and can begin a top-flight campaign with five consecutive victories. Their record at home against Sunderland is equally impressive: City are unbeaten in 14 previous Premier League meetings at home, winning 12 and drawing two. Sunderland, though, have scored in each of their last eight away league matches, matching their longest such run since 2015/16. Haaland arrives in form, having scored nine times in his last nine appearances. Yet Sunderland remain the only Premier League side he has faced without scoring against. Across two previous meetings, he has taken three shots worth 0.75 xG without finding the net. For City, Enzo Maresca can become only the sixth manager to win his first five Premier League matches in charge of a club. Newcastle United v Hull City Hull have never lost a Premier League away game at Newcastle, winning twice and drawing once across three previous visits to St James' Park. The newly promoted side are also seeking to become the first team to be promoted since Portsmouth in 2003/04 to remain unbeaten through their opening five matches. Newcastle have faced 76 shots, more than any other side, while only Crystal Palace have faced more xG. Despite that, they have scored seven times from just 3.9 xG, an overperformance of 3.1. Hull midfielder Mohamed Belloumi has two goals and an assist in his first four Premier League appearances. Newcastle's Lewis Hall has won possession 31 times, the most in the league, while his six completed dribbles are also the most among defenders. Nottingham Forest v Coventry City Coventry's return to the Premier League has begun with four defeats and no goals. Only Crystal Palace in 2017/18 endured a longer losing start without scoring, losing their first seven games. Forest have also struggled in front of their home supporters, failing to score in any of their three Premier League matches at the City Ground. They have never previously opened a league campaign without scoring in their first three home games. Morgan Gibbs-White has been one of the league's most productive players in 2026, contributing 13 goals and five assists. Only Bruno Fernandes has been involved in more Premier League goals during the calendar year. Coventry's Jack Rudoni has registered five shots and created eight chances without a goal contribution. Bournemouth v Liverpool Liverpool have dominated the historical head-to-head, winning 14 of 18 Premier League meetings with Bournemouth. All three Bournemouth victories have come at home. The Reds have scored in 17 of those 18 encounters and average three goals per game against the Cherries, their highest average against any opponent they have faced at least 10 times in the competition. Liverpool have drawn three of their first four matches, the first time they have done so since 2005/06. Bournemouth have an even more remarkable draw record in 2026. They have drawn 13 of their 23 league matches this calendar year, meaning 56.5% have ended level, the highest draw ratio recorded by a team in a single calendar year in English top-flight history. The Cherries have also led in all four league games this season without winning any. Marcus Tavernier has scored in four of his last five appearances, matching his combined total from his previous 24 matches. Fulham v Manchester United Manchester United have lost only once in their last 21 Premier League meetings with Fulham, winning 16 and drawing four. United have collected four points from their opening four games, matching their joint-lowest tally at this stage of a Premier League season. Their shot volume, however, has been high, with 84 attempts across the first four matchdays, the most in the division. Their 8.3 xG is second only to Brighton. Fulham have struggled for goals, failing to score in 10 Premier League matches during 2026, the most of any team. Marcus Rashford leads United for chances created with nine, while his 14 completed dribbles and 23 touches in the opposition box are also team-high figures. Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, has provided five assists in his last five Premier League appearances in London, adding another individual subplot to Sunday's fixture.

Liverpool right-back signing offered for free, but a squad rule could block it
Highlights: Liverpool have been offered free agent Dani Carvajal, the former Real Madrid right-back, according to TEAMtalk, with Manchester City and Fulham also given the chance to sign him. Carvajal, 34, left Real Madrid this summer after 13 years and 29 trophies, including six Champions League titles, but Liverpool haven't made any firm commitment to a deal. Liverpool's non-homegrown squad quota is already full for this season, meaning even if they wanted him, registering Carvajal before January might not be possible. Liverpool 's right-back position has been unsettled for over a year, ever since Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid. Now, in an odd twist, a route back to stability may be sitting with one of the players Alexander-Arnold used to line up against for club and country. Dani Carvajal, Real Madrid's captain until this summer, has been offered to Liverpool on a free transfer. Whether they can actually take him is a separate question entirely. Why does Liverpool even need this? Because nothing at right-back has settled since Alexander-Arnold's exit. Liverpool signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen as his direct replacement, but Frimpong has struggled to adapt to the Premier League. Conor Bradley, the other recognised option, has been out injured for months. Last season, Arne Slot leaned on Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones as makeshift right-backs, but Jones has since completed a 30m move to Inter Milan, closing off that option entirely. Into that gap stepped Ronald Araujo, a natural centre-back signed on loan from Barcelona, who played right-back against Ipswich Town and helped Liverpool to a comfortable 2-0 win alongside fellow summer arrival Jeremy Jacquet. It wasn't a spectacular performance. It was a solid one, and solid is exactly what the position has been missing. So why is Carvajal even being discussed? Because his resume makes it impossible not to. Across 13 years at Real Madrid, Carvajal won 29 trophies, six Champions Leagues and four LaLiga titles among them, plus Euro 2024 with Spain. Very few available free agents anywhere in Europe carry that level of pedigree. Transfermarkt lists his market value at just 7 million, reflecting his age rather than what he's actually won, and intermediaries have been sounding out Liverpool, Manchester City and Fulham on his behalf since his Real Madrid contract expired in July. The situation, as it stands Carvajal's status Free agent since July Clubs offered the deal Liverpool, Manchester City, Fulham Carvajal's age 34 Trophies won at Real Madrid 29, including 6 Champions Leagues Liverpool's stated position No firm commitment made Registration obstacle Non-homegrown quota already full What's actually stopping Liverpool from just signing him? Premier League squad rules. Clubs can register a maximum of 25 senior players, with no more than 17 of those non-homegrown, and Liverpool have already reached that non-homegrown limit for the current season. Even if Liverpool decided today that they wanted Carvajal, there's a real chance they couldn't officially register him until the January transfer window opens, turning what looks like a simple free transfer into a logistical puzzle before it's even a footballing decision. What's happening elsewhere in this window? Arsenal are keeping tabs on Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney as a potential backup option behind Kai Havertz, should Viktor Gykeres leave the club. Toney, 30, has started the Saudi Pro League season strongly, with six goals in five matches, but Arsenal's interest is described as monitoring rather than active pursuit for now, a much earlier stage than Liverpool's Carvajal situation.

USA's Folarin Balogun set for Premier League move with Everton: Report
United States striker Folarin Balogun is set to head to Premier League team Everton on a transfer from Monaco, British media reported on Monday. The transfer fee offered by Everton is reported to be in the range of 40 million pounds ($54 million) on a four-year deal, the British Press Association said. It said personal terms had yet to be worked out before the deal could be completed prior to Tuesday's transfer deadline. The 25-year-old Balogun, who had two years remaining on a contract at Monaco, gained attention this summer scoring three goals for the United States as it reached the knockout stage of the World Cup. He was the top scorer for the U.S. team. He also made headlines after drawing a red card and a one-game suspension in a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a round-of-32 match. The one-game suspension was deferred by FIFA after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened, allowing Balogun to play in the round of 16. Balogun eventually played in the 4-1 loss to Belgiu

The former midfielder said he felt a special connection to Dutch football after coming through a Barcelona academy influenced by Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. Chelsea Signs Spanish Player Pep Chavarria on a Five-Year Deal Until 2031
London, August 12: Premier League club Chelsea has announced the signing of Spanish player Pep Chavarria from La Liga team Rayo Vallecano. The 28-year-old has signed a five-year contract. Chavarria has committed to Chelsea until 2031 and will begin working with his new teammates at Cobham. In an official statement, he expressed his excitement, saying, ... Read more Chelsea Signs Spanish Player Pep Chavarria on a Five-Year Deal Until 2031
Highlights Chelsea have agreed a 16.3 million deal, plus 1.7 million in add-ons, to sign Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria. The 28-year-old replaces Marc Cucurella, who left Stamford Bridge for Real Madrid this summer after winning the World Cup with Spain. Chavarria didn't make his La Liga debut until he was 24, and was sent off on his European debut three years later. Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria for an initial 16.3 million, with a further 1.7 million available in add-ons, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano. The 28-year-old will undergo a medical before completing his move to Stamford Bridge, where he's expected to compete with Jorrel Hato for the left-back spot vacated by Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid. It's not the kind of signing Chelsea have built a reputation on in recent years. There's no wonderkid hype, no long-term sell-on value being banked on. Chavarria is 28, has four seasons of top-flight experience, and only started playing regularly in Spain's Segunda Divisin in his mid-twenties. Who is Pep Chavarria? Chavarria is a Spanish left-back who spent years working his way up from outside Spain's top two divisions. He joined Real Zaragoza on a free transfer in 2020 after arriving from third-tier side UE Olot, and didn't make his La Liga debut until he was 24 years old. Two years later, Rayo Vallecano signed him from Zaragoza for a reported 1.8 million. His rise since then has been steady rather than explosive. Andoni Iraola, Rayo's manager at the time, brought him in for his overlapping runs down the left; his more recent coach, Inigo Perez, has helped him add range to his game, including operating in midfield rather than purely as an out-and-out wing-back. Chavarria has called Perez the best coach he's worked with. Why are Chelsea paying 16.3m for him now? Because Xabi Alonso needed a direct, ready-made replacement for Marc Cucurella, and because this summer's transfer strategy at Stamford Bridge has leaned toward experience over potential. Chavarria's arrival follows the signings of 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford both moves aimed at adding senior figures to a squad that's previously been criticised for lacking them. He's also Chelsea's third defensive signing of the summer, following right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta and centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, as Alonso rebuilds the back line around fewer long-term projects and more players who can contribute immediately. What does Chavarria actually offer on the pitch? More than his goal return suggests. He scored only once last season a long-range strike against Atletico Madrid and picked up more red cards than goals across the campaign, including one late on against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. But the underlying numbers tell a fuller story: across 44 appearances in all competitions, Chavarria racked up over 2,000 touches in La Liga and ranked among the division's most productive players for both crosses supplied and crosses blocked, a dual profile that points to a full-back doing defensive and attacking work in roughly equal measure. He started for Rayo in last season's Conference League final, a rare European final for a club of Rayo's size, where they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace. Chavarria's path to Chelsea 2018 Joins Olot (Spain's third tier) as a free agent 2020 Joins Real Zaragoza as a free agent 2022 Signed by Rayo Vallecano from Zaragoza for 1.8m Age 24 Makes his La Liga debut Age 27 Sent off on his European debut, against Sweden's Hacken 2025-26 season Starts in the Conference League final; Rayo lose 1-0 to Crystal Palace 2026 Signed by Chelsea for 16.3m plus 1.7m in add-ons What's the case for the signing, beyond the numbers? Mentality, according to the people who've worked with him. Jose Ramon Rodriguez, who coached Chavarria at Zaragoza, has pointed to his attitude as the real reason clubs kept believing he'd go further than his age or route through the leagues suggested. There are players who develop later than others, Rodriguez has said of him. Team-mates and coaches who've worked with Chavarria describe someone who trains at full intensity regardless of results and never uses form or circumstance as an excuse qualities that are harder to put a transfer value on than crosses or clean sheets, but ones Alonso will be counting on all the same. Whether that's enough to make the step up to the Premier League remains the open question. Chavarria has never played outside Spain, and English football's physical demands, particularly around set pieces, are untested territory for him. His old coach's answer to that is simple: at every level he's been asked to play at, he's found a way to meet it.
