Government to check commercial viability of D2M tech

NEW DELHI: After the reasonably successful preliminary trials of direct-to-mobile (D2M) technology telecast of live TV channels on smartphones without an internet connection Prasar Bharati has sent a detailed proposal with findings to the government to seek approval for initiating large-scale testing to check its commercial feasibility. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting officials said the proposal is considered seriously and a go-ahead is expected within two months. Initial short-term technology trials have reasonably been successful, and now it is only a matter of time before the commercial viability is established, they added. Short-term trials of D2M have been completed. We need to carry out large-scale trials, which will take two to three years. The project plans will have to be worked out accordingly. The detailed proposal to check commercial viability of the technology has already been sent to the government. With large-scale trials, commercial viability will be tested. That is a major step, so a policy decision is required. The proposal sent by Prasar Bharati is being seriously considered. It will take another two months to get approval, said officials privy to the matter. After the policy decision, the tendering process for the selection of agencies to conduct trials will begin. The officials, however, said that actual field work might start in the next 8-10 months depending on decision at the government level. Initial trials were conducted in different cities, including Delhi, Noida and Bengaluru last year in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Saankhya Labs. On the significance of second-stage long-term trials, the officials said that during the small-scale trials, by and large, there are no difficulties as they are technology-focused trials. Small-scale trials give you, by and large, an idea whether the technology will work or not because it has already been tested in the laboratory. In large-scale trials, you get a chance to check commercial viability. On that basis, people make investments, said an official. The duration of the large-scale trial is only decided after an assessment, which will be undertaken by the agencies that will participate in the trial. For trials, critical mass of people are required. They will not come overnight. One lakh people will not join or get the devices. It will be checked if people are actually using the devices. This takes time, the official said. Live broadcasting of content directly to mobile devices is done using broadcast signals like television and radio, bypassing traditional cellular or internet data networks. For this, the phones or devices require specific hardware to receive and decode broadcast signals.

Radhakishan Damani tops Huruns list of self-made entrepreneurs 2024

Mumbai: Radhakishan Damani (69), the founder of Avenue Supermarts, the company that runs the well-known retail chain DMart has topped the IDFC First Private & Hurun India's Top 200 Self-Made Entrepreneurs of the Millenia 2024. Avenue Supermarts is worth over Rs 3.4 lakh crore reflecting a 44 per cent increase in value from last year. Indian consumers' demand for quick commerce placed the founders of Zomato (Deepinder Goyal) and Swiggys (Sriharsha Majety and Nandan Reddy) in the second and third spot respectively. Zomato with a valuation surpassing Rs 2.5 lakh crore grew by 190 per cent from a year ago while Swiggy scaled Rs 1.01 lakh crore in equity value. The others among the top 10 were primarily new-age tech-driven entrepreneurs, like MakeMyTrip, Max Healthcare Institute, Zerodha, Dream11, Policybazaar, Razorpay and Nykaa. The study found that the cumulative value of the 200 companies on the list touched Rs 36 lakh crore, almost equivalent to the GDP of Maharashtra and surpassing the GDP of every other state in the country. The India's Top 200 Self-made Entrepreneurs of the Millennia 2024 comprises individuals from 46 cities nationwide. Bengaluru led the chart with 98 entrepreneurs, followed by Mumbai with 73 and New Delhi with 51. These three cities accounted for over half of the entrepreneurs on the list. Financial services dominated the list with 50 companies, while healthcare and retail had 25 entrants each. Notably, 188 companies, representing nearly 94 per cent of the list, have external investors, while the remaining are bootstrapped. Interestingly, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) strengthened their reputation as the leading incubators of entrepreneurial talent in India. Nearly one-third of the featured entrepreneurs are IIT graduates, with IIT Delhi emerging as the top undergraduate institution, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur. Other prominent IITs, such as Kanpur, Madras, and Roorkee, also feature prominently, showcasing their role in producing industry leaders like Bhavish Aggarwal (Ola Electric) and Harshil Mathur (Razorpay). The study contains entrepreneurs whose companies, launched after the year 2000, have transformed Indias business landscape. The average age of the founders of companies featured in the list is 45 years. One-third of the founders on the list are under the age of 40. Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India, said, The IDFC FIRST Private & Hurun Indias Top 200 Self-made Entrepreneurs of the Millennia 2024 showcases the extraordinary impact of self-made entrepreneurs on India's economy, with a total business value of USD 431 billionequivalent to a quarter of the value of Indias 200 Most Valuable Family Businesses, despite being founded within the last 24 years compared to the latter's 69-year average age. Four companies founded post-2020 are now collectively valued at Rs 69,400 crore.

NEET mode decision soon: Online or Pen-Paper, says Pradhan

New Delhi: The Education and Health Ministry are deliberating on whether to conduct medical entrance exam NEET-UG in pen and paper mode or online mode and a decision in this regard is expected soon, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Tuesday. The Education Ministry has held two rounds of talks with the Health Ministry led by Union Minister JP Nadda. Currently, NEET-UG is conducted offline - in pen and paper mode - wherein students have to solve multiple choice questions on an OMR sheet. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the largest entrance exam in the country in terms of number of candidates appearing for the test. In 2024, a record over 24 lakh candidates took the exam. The administrative ministry of NEET is Health Ministry and hence we are in talks with them about whether NEET should be conducted in pen and paper mode or online mode. We have had two rounds of talks with Health Ministry led by JP Nadda. Whatever option will be considered best suited for conducting the exam, NTA is ready to undertake the exercise, Pradhan told reporters. The Minister said a decision in this regard is expected soon and the reforms will be implemented in the 2025 edition of the exam. What will be NEET's methodology, what will be the protocol...a decision is expected soon. We will notify it soon, he added. The NTA conducts the NEET every year for admission into medical colleges. A total of 1,08,000 seats are available for the MBSS course. Of the seats available for the MBBS course, approximately 56,000 seats are in government hospitals and about 52,000 are in private colleges. Admissions to undergraduate courses in Dentistry, Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha also utilise the results of the NEET for admission. The idea of switching to Computer Based Test (CBT) mode for NEET is not new and has been deliberated several times before. However, the push for the exam reforms came following the paper leak controversy earlier this year. In the line of fire over alleged irregularities in NEET and PhD entrance NET, the Centre had in July set up the panel to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations by NTA. According to the high-level panel headed by former ISRO Chief R Radhakrishnan, multi-stage testing for NEET-UG could be a viable possibility that needs to be followed up. An acceptable framework with threshholds and test objectives of scoring and ranking at each stage, and number of attempts etc. may be evolved, the panel has recommended in its report. While NEET was under the scanner over several irregularities, including alleged leaks, UGC-NET was cancelled as the ministry received inputs that the integrity of the exam had been compromised. Both matters are being probed by the CBI. Two other exams CSIR-UGC NET and NEET PG were cancelled at the last moment as a pre-emptive step. The panel also includes former AIIMS Delhi director Randeep Guleria, Central University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor B J Rao, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras K Ramamurthy, People Strong co-founder and Karmayogi Bharat board member Pankaj Bansal, IIT Delhi Dean of Student Affairs Aditya Mittal and MoE Joint Secretary Govind Jaiswal. The committee was also been tasked with examining the existing security protocols related to the setting of the papers and other processes for various examinations and making recommendations to enhance the robustness of the system. The panel had also opted two IIT Kanpur academicians as members -- Amey Karkare, professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Debapriya Roy, assistant professor.
