'Food adulteration is a social crime,' says UP CM Yogi; calls for public shaming of offenders
LUCKNOW: Launching a renewed crackdown on those involved in food adulteration and the sale of counterfeit medicines, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday termed the menace a social crime, declaring that such acts would not be tolerated. In a strong deterrent measure, the CM called for the public identification of offenders by displaying their photos at major intersections to raise awareness and discourage others. Chairing a high-level review meeting of the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) department in Lucknow, Adityanath directed officials to take strict and decisive action against adulterators, fake medicine traders, and others under the states zero tolerance policy. He instructed that daily consumables such as oil, ghee, spices, milk, and cheese be tested rigorouslypreferably at production unitsto ensure quality. Special teams should be formed to carry out intensive checks of milk and dairy products with continuous monitoring, he said. Additionally, professional blood donors should be identified, and effective control should be established in this sector, he added. Public health is the state's top priority and it must be handled with full transparency and commitment. Officials informed the CM that the states network of food and drug laboratories had expanded significantly. Apart from six major divisions already in operation, new laboratories and offices have been established in Aligarh, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bareilly, Basti, Chitrakoot, Kanpur, Mirzapur, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, and Devi Patan divisions. Laboratory buildings in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Jhansi have also been upgraded, while three modern microbiology labs have been set up in Lucknow, Meerut, and Varanasi. These facilities are equipped for testing microorganisms, protozoa, viruses, bacteria, mycotoxins, and other pathogens. Testing is already underway in Lucknow and Meerut. The Chief Minister suggested the creation of a Corpus Fund to support the operation and maintenance of these laboratories. To tackle the fake drug trade effectively, Adityanath directed improved coordination between FSDA and police authorities to ensure better enforcement and drug quality checks. For transparency in the food safety process, FSDA has implemented a password-protected barcode system, allowing confidential and impartial sample analysis. Each sample is digitally tested by scientists and validated only after senior official approval. To boost public involvement, the department has introduced a mobile app called Food Safety Connect and a toll-free number (1800-180-5533). The CM instructed that a complaint be considered resolved only after the complainant expresses satisfaction. Significant progress has also been reported in the pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing sectors. Over the past three years, investment proposals worth 1,470 crore have been approved, generating direct employment for more than 3,340 people. There has also been a notable increase in pharmaceutical units, medical device production, blood banks, and retail medicine sellers across the state.

Drones developed by IIT-Kanpur set for trials on May 25
LUCKNOW: With stealth, high-speed performance, and logistical muscle, two drones developed by IIT-Kanpur are set for final trials on 25 May, and may soon become a part of the Indian Armys UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) arsenal. Amid Operation Sindoor and the ongoing military stand-off between India and Pakistan, the strategic significance of homegrown drone technology has grown considerably. In response to the Ministry of Defences urgent directive to showcase advanced UAV prototypes, IIT-Kanpurs aerospace engineers have delivered two specialised models an FPV (First Person View) combat drone and a high-payload logistics drone tailored for modern warfare. Operation Sindoor marked a tactical shift in military strategy, highlighting the dominance of drone-led operations, where stealth, aerial autonomy and real-time surveillance proved decisive on the battlefield. According to Professor Abhishek from IIT-Kanpurs aerospace engineering department, Both models are equipped with stealth features and radar-evasive capabilities, making them ideal for deployment in hostile zones. The short-range FPV drone is designed for precision strikes and real-time reconnaissance. Weighing under 10 kg, it is capable of kamikaze missions and precision-targeted payload delivery. Built with an ultra-fast motor, compact frame, and a front-mounted high-definition camera, the drone can relay real-time visuals to ground controllers. This is a direct response to a formal request from the Indian Army, considering the evolving security environment, Prof Abhishek said. The intent was to develop high-impact performance in both tactical and logistic dimensions, and the trials on 25 May will be crucial. Capable of flying at speeds up to 120 kmph, the FPV drone has a flight endurance of up to 30 minutes and can function in signal-compromised or jammed environments. It is also equipped with obstacle avoidance algorithms, allowing it to manoeuvre through narrow urban lanes or mountainous tracks ideal for surgical strikes and enemy base infiltration. The second model, a high-payload logistics drone, is a robust multi-rotor UAV designed to lift up to 30 kg of cargo over a 40 km range. Engineered for high-altitude and disaster-prone zones, the drone can operate in diverse weather conditions and land on unprepared terrain. It is capable of transporting ammunition, food supplies, or medical kits secured with vibration-absorbing mounts. This drone is expected to significantly reduce the Armys reliance on manned helicopters for critical supplies to forward bases or stranded troops in dangerous areas. IIT-Kanpur has previously delivered around 30 drones to the Indian Army, some of which are currently in use in the northeastern sectors.
Bird flu scare: Death of a tigress lead to closure of zoos in Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The death of a tigress in Gorakhpur zoo led to the closure of Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur zoos along with Etawah Lion Safari for a week on Tuesday evening following the bird flu scare in the state zoos. The decision to shut the zoos came after the death of a tigress Shakti at the Gorakhpur zoo as bird flu was confirmed as the cause of the death of feline. Meanwhile, all the Tiger reserves, including Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Lakhimpur Kheri, Amangarh Tiger Reserve in Bijnore, Ranipur Tiger Reserve in Chitrakoot and Suhelva Tiger Reserve in Balrampur, in the state have been directed to be on high alert. The wildlife authorities got alerted after the death of tigress Shakti at Gorakhpur zoo on May 7. Its viscera samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, which confirmed bird flu as the cause of death on Tuesday. The tigress, Shakti, was over two years old and was brought to Gorakhpur after her rescue from Lakhimpur Kheris Mailani in May, 2024. Also, the viscera examination of the tigress by NIHSAD confirmed the presence of a rare Vibrio bacterial infection. This bacterium, typically found in aquatic life including fish and seabirds, is a potential risk of spreading H5N1 (avian influenza) through direct contact. Infection in several big cat species, including tigers, leopards, and others is common as they feed on infected poultry carcasses. Cats are also prone to infection because of their risk of exposure to poultry or wild birds, say the wild life experts. Moreover, female wolf Bhairavi also succumbed at the Gorakhpur zoo and its viscera samples were sent to IVRI Bareilly. Bhairavi's results are awaited. Meanwhile, a sick tiger named Pataudi was recently transferred to the Kanpur zoo, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus there. The monitoring of all animals in the zoo is being done. They are being checked for symptoms of bird flu or other illnesses. Keepers have been made aware of the symptoms, said the senior forest official. According to Anuradha Vemuri, the principal chief conservator of forest-Wildlife (PCCF-Wildlife), the highest protocol was already in place. The zoos in Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur districts and the lion safari in Etawah shall remain closed for a week, she said. In a late Tuesday evening message to the staff of tiger reserves, senior forest officials asked them to keep a watch on the behaviour of animals on their premises and report if any of them fell sick or died. Meanwhile, Chief minister Yogi Adityanath, taking cognizance of the scare, directed the wildlife authorities to enforce maximum vigilance in all zoos in Uttar Pradesh to check the spread of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu). As per an official statement, the CM chaired a high-level meeting saying the safety of protected animals and birds in zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetland areas and cow shelters must be treated as the topmost priority. He instructed officials to take all necessary preventive measures promptly and strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by both the central and state governments to curb the possible spread of the infection. As a preventive strategy, Yogi ordered regular sanitization of zoo premises and the use of blow torching where needed. He also emphasized mandatory health screenings of all wild animals and birds, along with strict inspection of their food to prevent any contamination. The CM directed that all zoo staff be fully aware about avian influenza and equipped with PPE kits and other essential safety gear. He further said that staff duties within enclosures be assigned according to the level of associated risk. He called for strict monitoring of all poultry farms in line with safety protocols and tight control over the movement of poultry products. He directed the health department to assess the potential impact of bird flu on humans to prevent any risk of transmission to the public. The CM said that zoo authorities should be in regular contact with institutions like the Central Zoo Authority, National Centre for Disease Control, ministry of health, department of fisheries and dairy, and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, to seek advice and implement necessary action accordingly. At the same time, Gorakhpur health officials had collected blood samples from over 100 staff members of the Zoo, especially, those who were in touch with the Tigress Shakti. Their reports are expected by Wednesday, said Dr Yogesh Singh, the veterinary doctor at the Gorakhpur Zoo. He added that the entire zoo premises was sanitized. Dr Singh maintained that all animals, approximately 300 in number, present in Gorakhpur Zoo, were healthy and showed no signs of infection during their examination conducted on Tuesday.

1971 war veteran from Odisha's Kendrapara praises Operation Sindoor
KENDRAPARA: For 75-year-old Duryodhana Mohanty, memories of 1971 have come rushing back. And as a war veteran, Operation Sindoor has provided him joy the native of Barunadiha village under Kendraparas Rajkanika block. Mohanty, who fought against the Pakistani Army in the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war, said, A lot of water has flown under the bridge since the 1971 war. The introduction of missiles and drones in Operation Sindoor has changed the nature of warfare. We are proud that many missiles were earlier tested in the Integrated Test Ranges (ITR) on Dr Abdul Kalam Island and Chandipur in Odisha. Mohanty, who joined the Indian Army in 1970 at the age of 20, served in the 14th Battalion Brigade of The Guards during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. He recalled intense frontline combat across Bangladesh - from Habiganj and Laskarpur to Ajmiriganj, Tongi Junction, and ultimately Dhaka. We crossed the border from Agartala into East Pakistan on December 1, 1971. The battles were fierce. We used self-loading rifles, mortars, rocket launchers, anti-tank guns, cannons, howitzers, tanks, and machine guns. The maximum range of our guns was just about a kilometre, he said. The veteran recalled Indian Air Force deployed MiG-21s, Hawker Hunters, Folland Gnats, and English Electric Canberra bombers to great effect. We fought alongside the Mukti Bahini, destroyed enemy tanks, and pushed the Pakistani troops back all the way to Dhaka, he added. After serving the Indian Army for 32 years, including participation in Operation Meghdoot (1984), the mission to secure the Siachen Glacier, Mohanty retired in 2002. During his career, he was posted in Mizoram, Assam, Tripura, Kanpur, Kashmir, and Pune. He currently draws a monthly pension of Rs 41,000. Back in his village, Mohanty remains active in public life. He was elected sarpanch of Barunadiha gram panchayat three times - first in 2007, then in 2012, and again in 2022. He could not contest in 2017 due to reservation of the seat for SC candidates. Mohanty lives with his wife and extended family in Barunadiha. His eldest son, Amit, is also a former Indian Army soldier, while his younger son, Arjit, serves in Odisha Police.
Use Op Sindoor to speed up R&D in drone tech: Experts
BENGALURU: As drones are being used extensively in Operation Sindoor, experts point out that this war-like situation should be used to learn and scale up the pace of R&D in counter-drone technologies, and indigenous development of micro-controls and lethal technologies. While most of the drones being used in Op Sindoor were made in Bengaluru, Pune and Gurugram-Noida circuit, microchips, microprocessors and micro controllers are being imported, including from Taiwan. A DRDO official, seeking anonymity, said the work on improving drones and other technological interventions is being taken up by the organisation in partnership with private firms and experts. Prof Abhishekh, Department of Aerospace, IIT-Kanpur, said that a lot of research has been done in the drone sector since 2018 and now, the work on counter-drone technologies is being strengthened. These include early detection, radio frequency jamming and laser technology to neutralise drones. Experts said this should be done faster as the drone industry is growing at a rapid pace, especially over the last five years. They pointed out that drones are a Rs 1,500 crore market, much lesser than what it could have been by 2025. The country has over a 1,000 registered drone companies, but only 10-15 have partnered with government agencies and are seriously working on design and development. Experts pointed out that work is also being done in improving beyond-the-line-of-sight technology in drones, and India is lagging behind other countries. The defence sector should use the IDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) platform to place orders with startups to strengthen drone manufacturing and come up with innovative ideas, they added. Chief Research Scientist, Department of Aerospace Engineering, IISc, SB Omkar, said there is a lot of potential for growth in the drone industry but technological advances come with a cost, which the government should now support. Omkar, who is also chairperson for drone standardisation in India, said that volumes can be attained with economics and spreading drone usage across the country. Yusuf Unjhawala, Adjunct Scholar, Takshila University, Bengaluru, said that the use of drones in warfare heightened after the Ukraine war. Now, work needs to be done based on imagination and anticipating demand. Technological advances are being worked out to make drones more lethal, compact, cheaper, long-ranging, faster and with more sensors. The lineage is more towards AI operations, he added.

Civil defence volunteers rehearse emergency response in Lucknow ahead of nationwide mock drill
LUCKNOW: A day before the scheduled mock drill mandated by the Union government, civil defence volunteers conducted a rehearsal at the Lucknow police lines on Tuesday to strengthen emergency preparedness. Meanwhile, UP DGP Prashant Kumar, on Tuesday, said that comprehensive civil defence mock drills would be conducted across all districts on Wednesday in compliance of the instructions received from the Government of India. The exercise, which involved around 200 civil defence volunteers, was aimed at training volunteers in managing large-scale emergencies and responding effectively to potential missile or air attacks. According to Chief Warden, Civil Defence Lucknow, Amarnath Mishra, the participants demonstrated coordinated responses to sirens, evacuation procedures, and protective measures designed to minimise panic and chaos during emergencies. The drill focused on practical techniques to protect civilians during missile strikes and air attacks, along with educating the public on how to safeguard themselves in such situations, Mishra added. The development comes a day after the Union Home Ministry's directives to states to conduct mock drills on May 7 to enhance civil defence preparedness. The Union Home Ministry asked the states to operationalise air raid warning sirens and train civilians to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack. The states have also been directed to update and rehearse evacuation plans, crash blackout measures, and early camouflaging of vital plants and installations. Interacting with media persons, the UP DGP Prashant Kumar said that the Centre had identified 19 districts-- one placed in Category 1, two in Category 2 and the remaining 16 in Category 3-- for the exercise. Bulandshahr in western UP has been kept in Category 1; Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bakshi Ka Talab, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Bareilly, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Saharanpur, Sarsawan, and Chandauli are there in Category 2; Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar, both western UP districts, have been kept in Category 3. However, keeping the preparedness in mind and also considering the local sensitivities, the state government has decided to conduct the mock drill across all the state districts, said the DGP. He explained that the exercise would involve coordinated participation from multiple agencies, including the police administration, fire services, and disaster response agencies, to cope with disasters and other critical situations. The mock drill is imperative to ensure better coordination and readiness among all response agencies, said Prashant Kumar. Meanwhile, DG Civil Defence, Abhay Prasad also confirmed the instructions received from the Centre, explaining preparations were already underway to equip civilians with the knowledge and readiness needed in case of any future conflict. He said the mock drill would be conducted between 7 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday. At present, the state Civil Defence department has offices in 15 districts but covers 26 districts through its network. As part of the initiative, an assessment of emergency medical infrastructure, response time, and coordination between various agencies would be assessed in the event of mass casualties and large-scale evacuations. The drill would also foster greater public awareness and resilience in times of national crisis, said a senior state government official.

A A couple and their three minor daughters died in a major fire that broke out in Kanpur's Chamanganj area on the wee hours of Monday. The four-storey building houses shoe manufacturing units on its first and second floors, the police said. Firefighters took several hours to gain access to the fourth floor where the family lived. The bodies of the couple, Mohammad Danish 45, Nazneen Saba, 42, were retrieved from the fourth floor at around 1 am, while those of their daughters -- Sara, 15, Simra, 12, and Inaya, 7, -- were found on the same floor at around 6 am, said Additional DCP (Central) Rajesh Srivastava. They were all rushed to the Ursula Horseman Memorial Hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead. According to police, the neighbours noticed huge flames and thick smoke emanating from the building on Sunday night and alerted the fire department and police. Preliminary probe suggests that the fire started in the basement and engulfed the first and second floors before being noticed by the neighbours, Rajesh Srivastava told PTI. Initial suspicions point towards a possible short circuit or faults in the internal wiring, potentially originating from the floors where the shoe factory was operating, the ACP said. Police also said that the fire led to blasts in a couple of domestic LPG cylinders that worsened the situation. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were also called to help the firefighters in the operation. People from nearby buildings have been evacuated, the police said.

Authorities have initiated legal action against those responsible. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to provide medical treatment, counselling, and eventual rehabilitation of the rescued men. The middle-aged and elderly men, who had been forced into bonded labour by powerful individuals in several villages for years, have been freed, said Guna District Police Superintendent Ankit Soni. Cases have been registered against 12 individuals under various sections of the BNS, including Sections 127(4), 127(6), 143(2), 146, 115(2), 351(2), and 3(5). Nine of the accused have already been arrested, and a search is underway for the remaining three. In light of reports suggesting that more bonded labourers may still be held captive by influential individuals in other villages, the Guna district administration has vowed to continue its crackdown on such exploitative practices.

IIT-K roped in for cloud-seeding trials to check pollution in Delhi
NEW DELHI: A week after announcing that cloud-seeding trials will be discussed at the next Delhi cabinet meeting, a senior environment department official on Saturday said that Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur has been given the responsibility to execute the plan. Each cloud-seeding will cost around Rs 1.5 crore. If the proposal is approved, the government is expected to transfer funds directly to the institute. They (IIT-K) have already worked on technical aspects. If the proposal gets cabinet approval, no-objection certificates will be sought from 13 departments whose permissions are required to conduct the trial. The government will do the funding, the official said, adding that after the initial test run, scientific evaluations would be conducted. A total of 13 NOCs will be required from key agencies such as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Airports Authority of India. Once approved, it will be shared with all relevant departments for no-objection certificates. We aim to conduct the first trial during peak summer on the outskirts of Delhi, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa had earlier said. He had also said that the government was ramping up its pollution control measures using advanced technologies such as digitisation, artificial intelligence-based monitoring, and 24x7 surveillance at pollution hotspots. What is cloud-seeding? An experiment to assess whether it can successfully enhance precipitation, potentially addressing water scarcity or improving air quality Involves introducing substances like silver iodide or dry ice into clouds Substances act as nuclei, providing a surface for water vapour to condense and form ice crystals, which can then grow into raindrops or snowflakes Why Trials conducted Particularly useful in areas facing drought or water shortages Can increase snow accumulation, providing water source during spring melt Can be used to suppress hail formation Inducing rainfall can help to wash pollutants out of the atmosphere, potentially improving air quality
Cloud-seeding trials in Delhi may cost Rs 1.5 crore each, IIT Kanpur to handle operations: Official
The Delhi Environment Department is set to propose cloud-seeding trials in the next cabinet meeting, with each trial estimated to cost Rs 1.5 crore. IIT Kanpur will spearhead the initiative, managing all aspects from planning to execution. The government aims to conduct the first trial during peak summer on Delhi's outskirts, pending necessary approvals and NOCs from various departments.
Trash booms bring relief to choked canals in Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With concerns over plastic pollution continuing unabated in the capital, the corporation has been grappling with the challenge of curbing plastic waste from choking the citys rivers, canals and drains. In an accomplishment of sorts, the civic body, in collaboration with Plastic Fischer, a Germany-based social enterprise, removed over 600 tonnes of plastic waste from local waterbodies over the past two years -- though it also served to underscore the severity of the crisis. This was achieved using innovative trash-boom systems -- floating barriers designed to trap plastic waste -- across canal networks and rivers including Amayizhanchan canal, Killi River and Ulloor Thodu. In light of the effectiveness of trash booms, the civic body is planning to deploy two more such systems at strategic locations along the Amayizhanchan canal near Rajaji Nagar -- one of the critical hotspots. Abraham Thomas Renjith, project manager at Plastic Fischer, said that trash booms collect an average of 25 tonnes of plastic per month from waterbodies in the capital city. At present, we have employed around 24 individuals and the trash booms have been deployed at critical locations. In some locations, the waste is removed everyday, he said. The project was implemented in Thiruvananthapuram with support from Allianz. Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kanpur and Varanasi are the other cities where Plastic Fischer is implementing similar projects. We are getting a lot of enquiries from other cities within Kerala, said Abraham. Fencing the canal network to prevent dumping of waste proves to be ineffective, he added. An official of the health wing of the city corporation said that trash booms prove to be very effective. Its a very successful model that can be replicated by other cities and local bodies. We continue with our fight against plastic but rooting out plastic completely is impossible. Though we have strengthened waste collection and enforcement, there is no decline in the generation of waste, said the official. The official said that trash booms will be deployed in more locations, especially the river basins in the immediate future. He assured the family of getting the severest punishment for the terrorists wherever they may be. Earlier, the Congress MP arrived in Amethi for the first time after last year's parliamentary polls and began his day with an inspection of the ordnance factory in Munshiganj. Rahul Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of the factory during the UPA rule in 2007. He also inspected the Indo-Asian Rifles Private Limited unit located on the same campus which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 3, 2019. Both facilities have now begun manufacturing rifles. Gandhi spent nearly an hour inside the factories, examining the rifles and interacting with officials to understand the production processes. The Congress leader then visited the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, where he inaugurated a new heart unit meant for open heart surgery, built at a cost of approximately Rs 3.5 crore. During his Amethi visit, Gandhi also reviewed the progress of the Indira Gandhi College of Nursing, a project he is personally associated with. He interacted with students and faculty members and took stock of the institution's activities. Rahul Gandhi reaches Rae Bareli on two-day visit to UP
LUCKNOW: Former Congress president and Rae Bareli MP Rahul Gandhi arrived on a two-day visit to his parliamentary constituency on Tuesday morning. He commenced his visit by distributing over a dozen solar-powered carts donated by an NGO to the underprivileged. While winding up his two-day visit to Rae Bareli and Amethi, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday, is slated to visit the family members of Kanpurs Shubham Dwivedi who was killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. During the meeting he raised questions over the Jal Jeevan Mission, claiming that a sample survey showed that the potable water schemes had not reached people so far. At some places, leakage in the pipeline was spotted, and many households had not received the connection yet. He said that a committee comprising of officers and public representatives should be set up to check the authenticity of potable water schemes. He expressed disappointment over central schemes, claiming that of the 25 trainees of the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Rural Skill Programme, only three could get placement. He called the programme a total flop. Rahul Gandhi also visited the Railway Coach factory. Rahul Gandhis visit to Rae Bareli on Tuesday will conclude in Amethi on Wednesday, thus, he will be keeping one of the promises he made during the 2024 general election that he would give equal treatment to both the Lok Sabha constituencies. Both Rae Bareli and Amethi were considered to be the strongholds of the Nehru-Gandhi family till Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi to Smriti Irani in 2019. As Rahul Gandhi, who has represented Amethi Lok Sabha seat thrice in 2004, 2009 and 2014, decided to shift to Rae Bareli, and he was replaced by family loyalist KL Sharma against then Union minister Smriti Irani in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In Amethi, besides visiting the ordnance factory project at Korwa, Amethi, Rahul Gandhi is likely to inaugurate an open-heart surgery operation theatre at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, Munshiganj. The ordnance factory project facility is for the production of AK-203 assault rifles, a Kalashnikov variant, as part of an Indo-Russian joint venture. Rahul Gandhi is proposed to pay a visit to Indira Gandhi Nursing College at Munshiganj in the constituency. Earlier, on Tuesday, upon arriving at Lucknow airport, he was received by state Congress chief Ajay Rai, Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma, and other local leaders. Meanwhile, after winning from Rae Bareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, this has been the fifth visit of the Congress MP to his constituency. However, after the DISHA meeting, Uttar Pradesh Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dinesh Pratap Singh, who was also present at the meeting, addressed the media and made critical remarks about the Congress leader's intentions. Singh accused Rahul Gandhi of attending the meeting merely to register his presence for media attention. He comes just to make headlines. On the way, he might stop to eat jalebi or sit at a cobbler's shop because it gets him media coverage, said the minister.

1984 anti-Sikh riots: SC orders expeditious trial of 11 cases in Kanpur
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the expeditious trial of 11 cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in which chargesheets were filed post a reinvestigation. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh asked the special public prosecutors appointed in the case to enter appearance before the courts aside from measures for the cases' early disposal. The bench underlined an inordinate delay in the matter and ordered the expeditious trial of the cases. Advocate Ruchira Goel, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, said a 40-year-old illegible FIR in a Kanpur anti-Sikh riots case was forwarded to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to re-trace its contents but the laboratory was yet to give a report. The bench directed the CFSL to expedite the process and submit its report at the earliest. Goel referred to the trial being underway with the examination of witnesses in a related case. The counsel appearing for the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee said some accused persons moved the high court and obtained a stay on the proceedings. The top court was hearing a plea for the reopening of the killings of around 130 Sikhs in Kanpur during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. On March 3, the bench allowed the Uttar Pradesh government to engage forensic experts to reconstruct the four-decade-old illegible FIR in the case, requesting the laboratory's director not to insist on the original FIR, which was not readily available in the records of the chief judicial magistrate, Kanpur. Even if the CFSL found the contents of the FIR were illegible, the court lab was asked to identify the Hindi words/expressions on the basis of which victims might be able to submit their protest petitions in the court concerned. The top court on January 2 permitted the complainants and their families to engage a private counsel to assist the high court in appeals against the acquittals of the accused persons. If the complainants/victims or their families are not in a position to avail the services of a private counsel, they are permitted to approach the executive chairpersons of the UP State Legal Services Authority/High Court Legal Services Committee immediately, it said. In the 11 cases, which were reinvestigated and chargesheets were filed, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed Kamlesh Kumar Pathak and Ranjeet Singh as special public prosecutors. In those cases also, we permit the complainants/victims/ their families to engage counsel for which the trial court is directed to accord necessary permission, the bench said. If, owing to financial constraints, the top court said, the complainants and their families were unable to engage such a counsel, the district legal services authority will provide the best expert leading lawyer of the sessions division to represent the victims in trial, on payment of special fee. The fee would be sanctioned by the executive chairperson of the UP State Legal Services Authority as a special case, it added.

Heaven on earth turned to hell: Families in grief, horror after Pahalgam terror attack
What was meant to be a celebration of love, family, and dreams turned into one of the bloodiest chapters in recent Kashmir history. The serene valley of Pahalgam, famously known as Mini Switzerland, became the site of horror on Tuesday as terrorists opened fire on unsuspecting tourists. At least 28 lives were lost newlyweds, fathers, sons, and professionals who had come seeking peace but instead met brutality. Among them was Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a 26-year-old naval officer from Karnal, Haryana, on his honeymoon with his wife Himanshi. The couple had married just five days prior, on April 16. Vinay, who had been commissioned into the Navy two years ago, was dining with his wife when he was shot in the head. His grandfather, a retired police officer, recounted how Vinay had always dreamt of serving the armed forces. He was just a boy when he started asking questions about military vehicles. That dream brought him here and now, took him away, he said. From Karnataka, another family is shattered. Manjunath Rao , 48, a Bengaluru-based realtor, was vacationing with his wife and son to celebrate his sons excellent results in the Class XII exams he had scored 96%. They had planned to return home on April 24. Instead, the family is returning with his lifeless body. His wife Pallavi, still numb with shock, recalled the harrowing moment when her husband was gunned down in front of her. After killing my husband, I asked them to kill me too. One of them said, Nahin marenge, Modi ko boldo... and walked away, she said. Prasant Kumar Satpathy , 43, from Balasore, Odisha, had been saving for months to show his family the snow-clad landscapes of Kashmir. The accounts assistant from CIPET was with his wife and nine-year-old son when he was gunned down near the ropeway. He just wanted to show us heaven on earth, his grieving wife told relatives. Now, his younger brother is on his way to bring his body back home. Shubham Dwivedi, a 31-year-old businessman from Kanpur, had been married for just two months. He was in Pahalgam with 11 family members when he was shot point blank after terrorists confirmed his identity. His wife Aishanya, who hails from Lucknow, watched in helpless horror. They asked me who he was. When I said, My husband, they shot him in front of me, she said. The couple had taken a train to Delhi, a flight to Srinagar, and were to return on April 23 the day of his final journey. In Aruhi village of Bihars Rohtas district, sorrow hangs thick in the air. The dusty lanes are unusually quiet, the faces somber. News that Manish Ranjan, an Intelligence Bureau officer, had been gunned down in front of his wife and two young children during the Pahalgam attack has left his entire village and family across two states in stunned disbelief. The 42-year-old officer, originally from Aruhi but posted in Hyderabad, had taken a rare break from work to travel with his wife Asha (also known as Jaya), 12-year-old son, and 8-year-old daughter. It was supposed to be a bonding trip a pilgrimage and a vacation wrapped into one. He was excited about visiting Vaishno Devi. I was going to join them too, but couldnt go because of my health, said his uncle Alok Priyadarshi, his voice trembling over the phone. Now we only want justice from the government. He served the nation and they shot him in front of his children. His family, originally from Rohtas but currently settled in Malda, West Bengal, is shattered. His father, Manglesh Mishra, a retired college teacher, had hoped to see all three of his sons thriving. Now the eldest is gone leaving behind grieving parents, two brothers employed in government services, and children too young to understand the finality of death. He had called me just before leaving, said his other uncle, Alok Ranjan, from Sasaram. The kids were excited. The family was happy. But destiny had willed it otherwise. Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar both condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly and despicable act. But no statement can ease the devastation in Aruhi, where a decorated officers life ended in a valley that was meant to bring peace. 32-year-old Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local horse rider was the sole provider for his family. Adil wasnt a tourist. He wasnt part of any convoy. He was one of Kashmirs own a man who saddled up horses for visitors, offering them rides through the stunning slopes of Baisaran,That day, he had gone to Pahalgam for work as usual, unaware that he wouldnt return home again. When bullets flew, they hit locals and visitors alike. One of them struck Adil, ending a life that had been holding together an entire household. We called his phone when we heard about the firing, said his father, Syed Haider Shah, his voice trembling as he recalled the hours of helpless waiting. It was switched off. Later, it rang once, but nobody answered. We rushed to the police station. Thats where they told us my son had been martyred. Adils family lives in modest conditions no riches, no safety nets. His work as a horse rider was their only income. Now, his wife, children, elderly parents, and relatives are left shattered, not just by grief but by the uncertainty of what comes next. He was our only support, cried his mother, barely able to speak through her tears. He fed us, clothed us, did everything. Now, we have nothing. His uncle, Shaheed Bug Singh, painted a fuller picture: Adil had a young family his wife, his children. He was the eldest son, the backbone of this family. Poor as we are, we could still sleep at night knowing he was there for us. Now we have no one. Relatives and neighbours from the region echoed the same pain, and a shared feeling of betrayal. Adil represented the real Kashmir hardworking, peace-loving, said Mohiddin Shah, a relative. And yet he was gunned down like his life meant nothing. This isnt just a tragedy, its a wound on our Kashmiriyat. The Shah family is now pleading for help financial, emotional, and most of all, judicial. We want justice, his father said. We want answers. Why was an innocent Kashmiri man killed? Who will now take care of his family? Across the nation the reaction is the same: silence, disbelief, and mourning. Entire communities have been left reeling.
