Illegal betting app: ED freezes Rs 110 crore worth bank funds; seizes 1,200 credit cards
NEW DELHI: Funds worth Rs 110 crore kept in mule bank accounts have been frozen and 1,200 mule credit cards were seized following recent searches against the Indian operations of a Cyprus-based illegal online betting platform named Parimatch, the Enforcement Directorate said on Thursday. Parimatch app, as per the federal probe agency, gained visibility in the country through aggressive marketing, including sponsorship of sports tournaments and partnerships with well-known celebrities. It is alleged to have cheated investors luring them with high returns and generating more than Rs 3,000 crore in a year. They also set up Indian entities to run surrogate advertisements under the names 'Parimatch Sports' and 'Parimatch News'. Payments to these agencies were made via foreign inward remittances, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said in a statement. The agency had conducted searches at 17 locations in Mumbai, Noida, Jaipur, Surat, Madurai, Kanpur and Hyderabad on August 12 as part of a case registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against the operations of Parimatch. The ED case stems from an FIR filed by the cyber police station of Mumbai Police against parimatch.com for duping users through online betting. The agency said funds worth about Rs 110 crore kept in various bank accounts belonging to persons/entities used as mule accounts (bank accounts used for money laundering and similar criminal activities) and/or for layering purposes were frozen. More than 1,200 mule credit cards, found in a single premises during the searches, have also been seized, it said. Describing the alleged modus operandi deployed by the betting platform, the ED said it routed users' fund through mule accounts using different strategies across the country. In one case, it said, funds deposited by users into mule accounts were withdrawn in cash in a specific locality in Tamil Nadu. This cash was handed over to hawala operators, who used it to recharge virtual wallets of a UK-based company. These wallets were used to buy cryptocurrency in the name of mule crypto accounts, which were actually operated by Parimatch agents, it alleged. In western India, the ED said, Parimatch engaged services of domestic money transfer (DMT) agents. Funds collected in mule accounts controlled by these DMT agents were sent to Parimatch agents through payments made by mule credit cards. The ED said it found that payment companies whose application for payment aggregator licences were rejected by the RBI offered their services to Parimatch in garb of technology service providers (TSPs) and offered their API (application programming interface) to facilitate user fund collections. These TSPs offered the API to Parimatch agents who onboarded mule accounts opened in the name of e-commerce companies and payment solution provider companies for collection of funds from users, the ED probe found. The money so collected through UPI transfers was layered and transferred out in the garb of e-commerce refunds, chargebacks, vendor payments etc effectively concealing the actual flow and purpose of funds, it said.

BSF trains dogs to detect drones coming from Pakistan
CHANDIGARH: In a first in the country, the Border Security Force (BSF) has trained dogs to detect drones that come from the Indo-Pak international border carrying payload of drugs and weapons. The ears of these canines can pick up the mechanical buzzing sound of flying machines, a sound that the ears of humans usually do not detect. Sources said that four dogs have been trained at National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD) in Tekanpur, Gwalior, for the Punjab frontier of the BSF. These four dogs have already been deployed on duty. Most dogs belong to the labrador retriever breed. Additionally, 14 more dogs are currently being trained. The dogs can pick up the buzzing sound of the drones known as auditory signatures as they have an ability of catching the sound resonance from a distance which human ears cannot do, and then the dogs alert our troopers who can then shoot down these flying machines, said a senior functionary of the BSF on condition of anonymity. The dogs can easily detect them during night and early morning or late evening as at that time other sounds in the vicinity are less, so they will be used accordingly to detect the drones, he said. He added that it is imperative to train dogs, given the increasing menace of smugglers and militants based in Pakistan sending drugs and weapons via the drones. An official said that the drones are fitted with GPS so that the consignments are dropped at a pre-decided location from the international border. The dogs will immediately give an alert whenever a drone enters our side of the border, and they will be more useful during the winters when the movement of these flying machines increases in dense fog, he said. The force also uses different sniffer dogs from its K9 unit to trace drugs or explosives dropped by the drones in the field. Confirming the development, Inspector General of BSF (Punjab Frontier), Atul Fulzele, said that dogs have been trained to detect drones as they can hear the humming sound of the UAV. Since the dogs has undisputed hearing ability to capture sound waves from a distance, they are trained in this regard and introduced to a particular sound generated by drones, he said. Sources said that from January till date, 175 drones have been shot down by the BSF, while a total of 294 drones were neutralised by the force last year. In 2023, 107 drones were seized. It is learnt that the US and Israel use identical trained dog squad to detect drones. A worrying trend has emerged, as these drones, mostly of Chinese origin are now flying at altitudes of 1,000 meters. This enables them to drop narcotics, arms and ammunition deep inside Indian territory, reaching new locations approximately four to five kilometres from the border. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that these drones fly from launch pads near Lahore and have been recorded dropping consignments as deep as 20 kilometres inside Indian territory. The officer noted that the drones are now operating at higher altitudes to avoid detection, shifting from the previous flying range of 300 to 400 meters. Additionally, they have changed their dropping zones, as they no longer use traditional areas near the border, indicating a strategy to find new locations for their operations. Sources in the BSF indicate that all recovered drones are DJI Mavic series, manufactured in China by a private firm in Shenzhen. These GPS-enabled quad copters weigh less than one kilogram, can fly up to 75 kilometres per hour, and reach altitudes of 6,000 meters. They have an endurance of around 40 minutes and can be controlled by radio link from a distance of up to 30 kilometres. Punjab shares approximately 553 km of international border with Pakistan. Thus, it remains the most active region for drug smuggling via drones, closely followed by the Sri Ganganagar area in the Rajasthan frontier, due to the proximity of dense habitations and numerous link roads along the border.

Communal flareup in Fatehpur as Hindu groups vandalise historical tomb
LUCKNOW: Fatehpur district in central Uttar Pradesh came to the brink of communal conflagration on Monday when members of some Hindu organisations vandalised a tomb in Abu Nagar, Rediya locality of Sadar tehsil, claiming that the structure was built on a temple bringing both the communities face-to-face. However, the district administration rushed with the deployment of heavy police and PAC contingents across the area, erecting barricades around the disputed site to prevent further flare-ups. As per local sources, at around 10 on Monday morning, over 2,000 people belonging to various Hindu outfits thronged the tomb on the premises of Eidgah, where the police were deployed in advance. The controversy centred around the structure, officially registered under Khasra number 753 in government records as Maqbara Mangi (National Property). It became a flashpoint after members of the Math Mandir Sanrakshan Sangharsh Samiti, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Mahasabha and other groups, declared it to be a temple dedicated to Thakurji (Lord Krsihna) and Lord Shiva, allegedly over a thousand years old. A massive crowd with people carrying saffron flags, chanting 'Jai Shree Ram' surrounded the tomb. The sources claimed that the members of the Math Mandir Sangharsh Samiti had given a memorandum to Fatehpur District Magistrate Ravindra Singh on Friday, claiming that the said tomb was originally a temple. They had demanded the administration to remove the tomb while announcing that they would perform a puja on the site on August 11. Following their demands, the district administration had deployed the forces in advance. The controversy erupted after the district president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mukhlal Pal, who was at the forefront of the movement, alleged that the tomb of Nawab Abdus Samad was not a tomb but over a thousand-year-old temple of Thakur ji and Lord Shiva, citing the presence of a lotus flower and a trident within the structure as evidence. Following the claim, members of Hindu organisations entered the tomb premises and vandalised the area outside the mausoleum. The sources said that the members of the Hindu group had plans to perform a pooja at the site, escalating the situation further. Even some of the trouble makers took to the roof of the tomb and put a saffron flag over there. The form of our temple has been converted into a mosque. We Sanatan Hindus will not tolerate this. There are clear signs like lotus flowers and tridents. We will offer prayers at the temple at any cost, Mukhlal Pal said while calling upon Sanatanis to gather at Puri Thakur Dak Bungalow at 9 am on Monday to march and perform pooja. He claimed that the state government was warned that if prevented from worshipping, it would be held responsible. We are peaceful people, but if we have to fight for our religion, we are ready in every way, he added. Police force from 10 police stations was called in to disperse the members of both communities. Fatehpur District Co-convenor of Bajrang Dal, Dharmendra Singh, also vowed to perform puja at the tomb, saying, We will offer prayers here at noon. The administration will not be able to stop us. Virendra Pandey, State Vice President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), also claimed the site to be a temple of Lord Bholenath and Shri Krishna. The structure is not a tomb. There are religious symbols, Parikrama Marg, and a temple well. We want to clean it for Janmashtami celebrations on August 16. We had informed the administration 10 days ago, but they are not taking it seriously, Pandey said. He called the site a central place of faith for Hindus and vowed to reclaim it. Meanwhile, local sources also claimed that a group of around 300 Hindu group activists even entered the tomb and started puja, after which they did the Shankhnaad. In the meantime, a group of over 1500 members from the other community also thronged the site, further escalating the situation as both the communities indulged in heavy stone pelting. The sources added that initially, the district police authorities tried to placate both the communities, but when they failed, they applied force to ward off the troublemakers. Eventually, police force from 10 police stations was called in to disperse the members of both communities. Taking note of the situation, the district administration imposed strict security measures with police forces patrolling around. The administration continued to maintain that the land was recorded as a national property tomb, and officials, including ADG Prayagraj zone Sanjeev Gupta, reached the site to keep a vigil on the situation. The police flag march was conducted in the area, and the ADG ordered to deploy drone to monitor the situation closely to prevent escalation. Half a dozen ASPs of the adjoining districts like Chitrakoot, Banda, Hamirpur, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh and Kanpur Dehat were rushed to the site. UP deputy CM Brajesh pathak said, We will maintain law and order in Fatehpur at any cost. No one is allowed to break the law. According to Fatehpur SP Anoop Singh, the police force was deployed around the site in advance, but some troublemakers still managed to enter the tomb and were driven away. Now only police personnel are present on the site and the saffron flag has also been removed, he added. Meanwhile, the members of the Hindu organisations blocked traffic at Daak Bangla crossing, which is around 500 metres from the tomb and started doing Hanuman Chalisa on the road. The Shahar Qazi, Saidul Islam Abdullah, urged the members of the Muslim community to maintain peace. He claimed that a few troublemakers were trying to disturb the peace and harmony of the city but the Muslims would have to let the administration do its duty.

Murder accused escapes from Kanpur Jail, prison staff suspended
A 25-year-old murder accused escaped from Kanpur district jail late Friday night, triggering a massive search operation by prison officials and local police. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Asaruddin, who had been lodged in Barrack No. 14 since January 14, 2024, went missing during a routine headcount around 10:30 pm. Jail authorities conducted multiple recounts but failed to locate him, prompting them to alert the police by 2:30 am. Following the incident, PC Meena, Director General (Prisons), suspended a jailor, a deputy jailor, and two head warders. A probe has been ordered, to be led by the DIG (Prisons) of Kanpur Range. Police and jail staff searched Kanpur railway station, bus stands, and nearby areas but found no trace of the fugitive. CCTV footage from within the jail and nearby locations, as well as inputs from warders, have so far shown no sign of Asaruddin exiting the premises. Teams have checked trees, toilet ducts, and other hidden spots. Asaruddin, a resident of Tiwari Pur in Jajmau, was arrested on January 14 for allegedly murdering his 25-year-old friend Ismail on January 8. Police say the killing was premeditated and motivated by Asaruddins belief that his wife was having an affair with the victim. Originally from Assam, the accused remains at large as the search continues. Senior officers, including DCP (East) Satyajit Gupta and ADCP Anjali Vishwakarma, visited the jail to oversee the investigation.

Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjay Nishads Ganga at your doorstep remark amid floods draws flak
LUCKNOW: Having a penchant for kicking up rows with his statements, state fisheries minister and NISAHD party chief, Sanjay Nishad, has done it again. With the state in the grip of floods and amid rising levels of rivers Ganga and Yamuna in several parts, Nishads remarks on water from the river Ganga raised eyebrows when he said that the holy river was reaching the doorstep to clean the feet. The remark was seen as insensitive and drew the Opposition's ire on social media. A video of Nishad's visit to the Kanpur Dehat area quickly went viral. In the video, the minister is seen surrounded by a group of people, one of whom is talking about how deep inside the house the water had reached. At this, Nishad said: Ganga Maiya reaches your doorsteps to clean your feet, and this will take you directly to heaven. The remark quickly triggered a response from the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress, which shared the clip on X and wrote: The minister himself lives in a posh area of Lucknow; forget Ganga, not even a drain flows by his doorstep. So, does this mean it should be inferred that the minister will go straight... there? However, during his visit, the minister got a retort from the villagers who told him to stay with them in their flooded houses and get the river Gangas blessings. As the video went viral, Nishad reportedly clarified that his remarks were made in a lighter vein. I was on a visit to a flood-hit area of Nishads where, while interacting with them, I said that for seeking salvation, people from faraway places come to take the holy dip in the Ganges and here, Ganga Maiya was right at their doorstep, the minister told media persons. We Nishads worship rivers our source of life and livelihoods. So the remark has its own context, the minister added. Apart from Congress, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Sharvendra Bikram Singh also slammed Nishad for his remarks. He is not aware of the ground reality and the situation in which flood-affected people are living. The state government has failed to provide relief to the people, and its ministers are looking for photo opportunities, he said. Singh added that at a time when people were losing their homes and livelihoods due to floods, such statements showed how disconnected UP ministers were from ground reality. Several parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, have been in the grip of massive waterlogging and floods triggered by heavy rain, and water has also been entering homes in low-lying areas.
Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Ballia, Banda, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Chandauli, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Etawah, and Fatehpur are among other affected districts.
Major rivers flowing above danger mark in UP as incessant rains claim a dozen lives
LUCKNOW: At least five rivers in Uttar Pradesh are flowing above the danger mark and many others are in spate owing to the incessant heavy rains during the last 50 hours, which have claimed over a dozen lives so far. Continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers have triggered a major flood crisis affecting at least 20 districts, including Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Jhansi, Agra, Kanpur Dehat, and Kanpur Nagar. Rising water levels in the Ganga, Yamuna, and Chambal rivers have inundated hundreds of homes and cut off villages. Relief and rescue teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and PAC have been pressed into service in the worst-hit areas. The monsoon remains active in both eastern and western parts of UP due to a strong monsoon trough. Heavy rainfall has been reported in Lucknow prompting the District Magistrate to declare all schools from Classes 1 to 12 closed on Monday. Similar orders were issued in Sultanpur, where government and private schools up to Class 8 were shut. Eastern Uttar Pradesh recorded 18.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, nearly 146% above the normal level of 7.5 mm. Western UP saw 8.2 mm of rainfall compared to an expected 7.2 mm, 14% above normal. The IMD has issued warnings of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for over 60 districts. The Met department issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall in Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Mathura, Hathras, Agra, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal, and Badaun. Alerts for heavy rain have also been issued in 40+ additional districts, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Ayodhya, Moradabad, and Etawah. Lightning warnings are in effect for nearly the entire state. The flood situation is grim across the state with the Team 11, constituted by UP CM Yogi Adityanath, comprising ministers, on ground zero to oversee the rescue and relief. With the CM personally monitoring the situation, the flood relief and rescue operations intensified across the state. Varanasi, Prayagraj and Kanpur are among the worst-affected divisions. In Varanasi, families have been waiting for hours for their turn to perform the last rites of their near and dear ones at the ghats as rising waters of the swollen Ganga spilled on to the streets on Monday leaving the Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghat cremation grounds completely inundated. While pyres were being laid at the upper platform at Manikarnika Ghat, cremations took place in the streets near Harishchandra ghat. With the majority of the 84 ghats along the Ganga submerged, flood waters had been flowing on roads especially in upstream areas. The fury of the Ganga is not only gripping Kashi but also affecting the lives of thousands in neighbouring Ballia district as well. The fields with ready paddy crops are completely marooned in Ghazipur and Chandauli districts. In Prayagraj, with water levels of Ganga and Yamuna having breached the danger mark by around 50 centimetres at Naini, Phaphamau and Chhatnag, more than 107 wards of the district stood flooded forcing more and more residents to take refuge at makeshift flood relief camps. Over 1747 families, comprising 7500 people, have already moved to 18 relief camps, which are getting crowded by the day. The administration has deployed over 168 boats and one motorboat to rescue and assist flood victims. Failed UP government focused on events, not flood relief: Akhilesh Yadav slams BJP
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday criticised the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government over the worsening flood situation, alleging that the corrupt and failed administration is more invested in event management than in public welfare. In a post on X, the former chief minister questioned why a government capable of organising super VVIP rallies was unable to conduct proper relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas. As of Sunday, official data showed that floods had affected 402 villages across 37 tehsils, impacting 84,392 people. Seventeen districts, including Kanpur Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Ballia, and Varanasi, were reported to be severely affected. There is a terrifying situation not just in Prayagraj but across the entire state due to floods, Yadav said. People are facing acute shortages of food and drinking water. Sanitation has collapsed, forcing many to live in inhuman conditions. He added that children, pregnant women, and the elderly are struggling to access healthcare due to disrupted medical services. People are scared of rats, poisonous insects, and the threat of electric shocks. Homes are collapsing, belongings have been washed away, and many are left without even a change of clothes, Yadav claimed. He alleged that the administration is missing from the ground while the government is usy with self-promotion and photo-ops. The SP leader also highlighted the loss of critical documents such as ID cards, ration cards, bank papers, and educational certificates, and said vehicles and livelihoods had been destroyed. Yadav expressed concern about the outbreak of water-borne diseases, disruption in childrens education, and the inability of families to conduct last rites due to submerged cremation grounds. In Varanasi, the Ganga river crossed the danger mark on Monday, flooding ghats and forcing authorities to shift cremations and other religious rituals to rooftops and elevated platforms. According to the Central Water Commission, the river was flowing at 72.1 metres, well above the danger level of 71.262 metres. Calling for a detailed response from the BJP government, Yadav said: The public is living in fear and uncertainty. The images of devastation lay bare the hollow claims of development and smart cities. People are angry. Relief will come only when the BJP goes.

Close to 3500 of over 60,000 new recruits in UP police drop out of training
LUCKNOW: After going through the rigours of the recruitment during the biggest ever recruitment drive to appoint 60,244 constables in UP Police, over 3568 candidates selected have left the job at the onset. After the selection process for 60,244 posts, comprising 48195 for men and 12049 for women, under -- Recruitment 2023 -- was completed, 3568 candidates did not even join the job. Over 100 candidates joined the department but resigned after participating in the initial sessions of training. The recruitment process commenced in December 2023 with a plan to induct 20 per cent women, leading to 12049 female candidates in the police force. Initially, the examination for the recruitment was held in February 2024, but had to be cancelled due to the paper leak. The process restarted in August 2024, and the exam was conducted. Approximately 50 lakh candidates applied for this exam. However, at the time of examination in August 2024, about 30 per cent of the aspirants did not appear in the exam. The final result of the exam was declared on March 13, 2025. On June 15, in the presence of Amit Shah, appointment letters were distributed to the selected candidates at a grand event in state capital, Lucknow. From June 21, a month-long JTC (joining Training Course) of the selected candidates started and it culminated in their main training beginning at the Recruitment Training Centres (RTC) from July 21. Finally, at the time of joining, instead of 48,195, only 45,055 men joined, and instead of 12,049 women, only 11,621 female candidates joined the training. Out of 60,244, only 56,676 candidates joined. The remaining 3568 candidates distanced themselves from the police job. Former DGP and DG Training Sukhkan Singh feels that when the youngsters are jobless, not joining even after being selected is beyond understanding. There could be several reasons for this. When such candidates do not join, the positions that remain vacant are re-advertised. The recruitment process for those positions is started afresh. According to an officer associated with the training claimed that a few candidates had resigned after joining the training. The number of such candidates is reported to be more than 100. A few of them were selected for the post of Village Development Officer. Meanwhile, there were a few people who could not bear the rigors of the training. A candidate from Deoria district in eastern UP quit simply because he could not wake up at 5 am in the morning. He was appointed in the Ghazipur district. Initially, his father tried to convince him, but when it didn't work, the candidate went to the SP office and submitted his resignation. Similarly, trainee constable Tarun Kumar committed suicide by jumping from a three-storey barrack in Firozabad Police Line on July 23, 2025. In Bulandshahr Police Line on July 26, 2025, trainee constable Bhupendra attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance. He was referred to a higher centre in critical condition. From Ravana to present-day IITians: All carry Kanwar of hope, devotion and gratitude
LUCKNOW: The roads are inundated not only with the heavy rainwater or the swelling rivers, but also with the sea of saffron -- palpable with Kanwariyas taking the pious Ganga Jal rushing to their destination to offer it to their Isht (the presiding deity) Lord Shiva. Transcending through the ages, when Ravana, believed to be the first Kanwariya, or Parashumram (one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu) or even Lord Ram himself, carried the sacred waters of the River Ganga in Kanwar to offer it to Lord Shiva to give him relief from the burning sensation of the poison he had consumed. It is believed that he stopped the poison in his throat that emerged from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean by the Gods and Demons). Present day, IITians, engineers, or even NSG commandos are carrying the legacy of Kanwar Yatra forward. This year, over six crore devotees are expected to join the Kanwar Yatra. With the advent of the holy month of Shrawan, lakhs of devotees set out barefoot with Kanwars on their shoulders, heading toward Shiva temples with unwavering faith. Each Kanwariya carries Gangajal, and a personal story of devotion, hope, and gratitude, proceeding to their destination to offer it to their 'Isht' Lord Shiva on the day of Shrawan Shivaratri on July 23. Saket, 25, a pass out from IIT-Kanpur, is rushing towards barefoot to Barabanki carrying Kanwar on his shoulders to offer it to Lodheshwar Mahadev. Saket is now working at an MNC in Gurugram and has availed leave to join the Kanwar Yatra. I have been taking part in Kanwar Yatra for two years, said Saket, sharing that he is a Shiva devotee. He is carrying the Ganga Jal from Haridwar. Similarly, Ajay Kushwaha, a constable in the UP police, has rejoined the Kanwar Yatra this year after seven years. I got ill and had taken the vow to join the Kanwar Yatra after recovery, he said. In the crowd of Kanwariyas, an NSG commando was also seen carrying the Kanwar but he desisted from sharing his details. Some pray for healing, others for jobs, and some walk in fulfilment of past vows. An unflinching devotion to Lord Shiva fuels their faith. Sapna from Unnao had been battling with despair after her daughter was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. Doctors had said it was the last stage. In desperation, she vowed to Lord Shiva that if her daughter recovered, she would carry a Kanwar. She went to Haridwar with her ailing daughter, family members, and a walker to carry the child. Since the commencement of the Yatra, her daughter hasnt needed any medication. Its been five days. Shes smiling, eating, and not in pain. Mahadev has heard our prayers, said Sapna. Other Kanwariyas along the way have also stepped in to help care for the child. Shweta from Ghaziabad brought Gangajal from Haridwar alongside her 1.5-year-old daughter. After four years of marriage and repeated medical consultations, she remained childless. When all doors seemed closed, I prayed to Mahadev, she recalled. Soon after, she got pregnant. This yatra is indeed her way of fulfilling that promise. Now my daughter is healthy, and Im walking with her to thank Bhole Nath, she said. Sumit, 15, from Ghazipur, is on his second Kanwar yatra. He is carrying Gangajal from Kashi to Chitara. While he seeks divine help to pass his Class 12 exams, his larger hope is to spark a change in his village. Theres no educational culture in our village. No one studies. No one gets job. Im praying to Lord Shiva to bring that change, said Vineet. Similarly, Pradeep Maurya, 25, from Jaunpur, is walking 120 km with his Kanwar. Years ago, he frequently fainted without reason. Doctors couldn't help with the issue. After I joined Kanwar Yatra, things changed. Now I am healthy. This is my fourth consecutive Yatra, he shared. Babli, from the Bhopura border in Delhi, walks with her 8-year-old grandson. She hopes Lord Shiva will help her family repay Rs 7-8 lakh in debt incurred during her sons weddings. Her yatra began on July 13 in Haridwar. She would reach Delhi by July 22. Each step in the Kanwar Yatra is a step in faitha prayer, a vow, or a quiet hope carried across hundreds of miles towards Lord Shiva.

11 cops suspended for extortion, assault of livestock trader in Kanpur
LUCKNOW: In a case of blatant corruption, 11 Police Response Vehicle (PRV) personnel, accused of attacking livestock trader Mohammad Uzair and extorting Rs 10,000 from him, were suspended in Kanpur. Those cops left their assigned spot to extort money from the trader and assaulted him. The incident took place on July 12. Following a formal complaint, authorities initiated an investigation and found the cops involved in the case. This led them to order the suspension of 11 personnel on Monday for allegedly assaulting and extorting money from the trader from Aligarh. The preliminary enquiry was conducted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) South and the probe established the culpability of the cops. The suspension was implemented based on the initial findings and now a comprehensive investigation is underway by the Assistant Commissioner of Police. As per the sources, on July 12, livestock trader Mohammad Uzair and driver Laxman were transporting animals from Sarsaul to Aligarh when they were reportedly attacked and robbed of Rs 10,000 by PRV personnel in the Chakeri area under Barra police station jurisdiction. As per the complainant, while crossing Barra Cut Flyover by Arjun Eye Hospital on the highway, personnel from Chakeri's PRV 7058 halted him from behind demanding payment for animal transportation. Subsequently, PRV units 6504 and 7055 from Hanumant Vihar police station arrived at the scene. The personnel from all three PRVs insisted on a payment of 500 rupees per cop for passage. Upon his refusal to comply, the personnel forcibly removed him from their vehicle, assaulted him, and departed after issuing threats. The victims then reported the incident to the police. Acting on a complaint given by the animal trader, DCP South Deependra Nath Chaudhary conducted the probe, and he confirmed that the investigation found the cops guilty. He said that such behaviour dented the police department's reputation. The subsequent investigation established that PRV 7058 from Chakeri police station, operated by Constable Atul Sachan, initially intercepted the animal trader's vehicle. The unit included Head Constable Rishirajan, Constables Hariom Singh and Rinki Rani. PRV 7055 from Hanumant Vihar had Head Constables Ajay Kumar Yadav and Anand Kumar, with Constable Umashankar Dixit. Additionally, PRV 6504 from the same station was driven by Head Constable Pradeep Kumar, accompanied by Amir Hasan, Constable Sonu Yadav, and Aradhana. All involved cops have been suspended.

CM Yogi Adityanath says religious conversions a deep conspiracy, wont be tolerated
LUCKNOW: CM Yogi Adityanath on Saturday termed illegal religious conversions a calculated conspiracy to undermine the nations identity and destroy social fabric, asserting that Uttar Pradesh government was taking firm action to curb it. Yogi referred to the recent case of Balrampur where a large-scale illegal conversion racket backed by foreign funding was unearthed. The CM revealed that the suspicious transactions of over Rs 100 crore was found across 40 accounts with pre-determined rates for conversion. He termed it a grave threat to economic and social security of the state and the nation. Some forces are deliberately trying to alter the fundamental character of the country through unlawful conversions. This is an attack on social cohesion and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, the CM said while addressing the flagging-off ceremony of Shri Tegh Bahadur Sandesh Yatra dedicated to 350th Shaheedi Varsh of the Sikh Guru. Yogi underlined that marginalised communities, particularly Scheduled Castes, were being lured and coerced into changing their religion. He emphasised that such acts were against the spirit of the Constitution and the principle of social equality. The Yatra, which commenced from Lucknow, will pass through Kanpur, Etawah, and Agra before culminating at Chandni Chowk and the historic Sheeshganj Gurudwara in Delhithe site of Guru Tegh Bahadurs martyrdom. A commemorative memento was also presented to the CM to mark the occasion. The CM said 350-year-old legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur martyrdom was being revived through this yatra, serving as a powerful reminder of oppression and atrocities under Aurangzebs rule. He noted that the Mughal ruler sought to suppress Sanatan Dharma and impose Islamic dominance. In the face of tyranny, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji chose martyrdom over compromise, standing firm on the path of righteousness, the CM said. His martyrdom continues to inspire future generations with its message of unwavering faith and courage. The entire yatra is rooted in the tradition of sacrifice and resilience. As we commemorate Shaheedi Diwas, we are reminded of the immense struggles and sacrifices that paved the way for India to emerge as a free and strong nation, he added. Yogi stressed the need to preserve the legacy of sacrifice set by Sikh Gurus and to resist attempts to divide Hindus and Sikhs. Such conspiracies have been attempted before and will continue to surface, but we must remain vigilant and united, he said. Shaheedi Diwas inspired people to carry forward Gurus legacy and adapt it to modern-day strategies to ensure no community or individual was ever forced to abandon their culture or religion, Yogi added.

Crime in Uttar Pradesh addressed quicker than ever under 'Operation Conviction'
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh's 'Operation Conviction' has transformed the state's reputation from that of a lawless land to a model of strong governance with over 97,000 convictions in just one year. The implementation of three new criminal laws and fast-tracking of 457 key cases further bolstered the drive. Highly-placed sources claimed that the Uttar Pradesh government was given a special mention by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the recent Central Zonal Council meeting in Varanasi for Operation Conviction and the rate at which the cases were being pursued by the UP government. According to ADG Prosecution Deepesh Juneja, effective implementation of the three new criminal laws is not only propelling Uttar Pradesh toward a crime-free status, but also setting an exemplary model. He stated that during the last year, 457 cases registered under the new laws, reached their logical conclusion in the form of convictions. The convictions included the death penalty for four criminals, life imprisonment for 10, imprisonment of less than 20 years for 425 offenders, and over 20 years imprisonment for 19 individuals, said ADG Juneja. In these cases, the prosecution effectively presented evidence and witness testimonies, making full use of the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to strengthen and expedite the judicial process. The authorities concerned also ensured witness protection, systematic evidence collection, and timely presence in courtall essential elements for a fair and time-bound trial. The ADG added that since July 1, 2024, the hearing of 25,000 cases across the state was supported by effective use of digital documentation and witness statements via video conferencing. This has significantly reduced the need for police and government witnesses to appear repeatedly in court, resulting in an estimated cost saving of Rs 25 crore for the state exchequer, said the ADG. Naming a few convictions, ADG Juneja said that in case number 394/2024 registered at Bilsi police station in Budaun, the accused Jaane Alam was sentenced to death and fined Rs 2.3 lakh under BNSS provisions. Similarly, in case number 26/2025 registered at Kotwali police station in Hathras, accused Vikas and Lalu Pal were awarded the death penalty along with a fine of Rs 80,000. In another case (224/2024) registered at Bhimganj police station in Kanpur Dehat, the accused Deepu was awarded the death penalty and fined Rs 10 lakh.

UP tonsuring row: Tension in Etawah, stone pelting on cops, 20 detained
ETAWAH/LUCKNOW: Days after the alleged caste-based tonsuring of a Bhagwat Katha preacher and his aide in Etawah's Dandarpur village, tensions escalated on Thursday as members of Yadav groups staged protests demanding the arrest of all accused and withdrawal of the case registered against the victims. According to police, large crowds began gathering near the Agra-Kanpur highway and at the village in the Bakewar area in the afternoon. Purported videos showed unidentified persons pelting police personnel with stones even as the latter brandished firearms in the air to warn the protesters on a narrow village road. In Lucknow, UP minister Jaiveer Singh accused Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav of giving the tonsuring incident a casteist spin and blamed him for stoking the violence. Etawah Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said, Information was received via social media that some groups were preparing to protest against the incident that occurred in Dandarpur village three days ago. Accordingly, police deployment was made in the town, on the highway and in the village to ensure law and order. Around 1:30 pm, a sizeable crowd started gathering on the Agra-Kanpur highway. While most were convinced to disperse, a few tried to enter Dandarpur village forcibly, which created a situation that could have disrupted peace, he said. SSP Srivastava confirmed that 19 individuals were detained, and 13 vehicles were seized. Necessary legal action is being taken under relevant sections. Law and order are under control, and the situation is normal, he added. Earlier in the day, hundreds of members from Yadav groups reached Bakewar police station to gherao it in protest against alleged police action against the victims and to demand the arrest of the accused. SP (Rural) Sreesh Chandra told reporters that police attempted to stop the advancing crowd, but a heated exchange followed. When protesters continued pushing forward, police used lathis to disperse them. The crowd reportedly retaliated by throwing stones at police personnel, damaging the windshield of a police jeep. Some protesters fled towards the Agra-Kanpur highway. The incident that triggered the unrest took place on the night of June 22-23 in the village. Two Bhagwat Katha preachers, Mukut Mani Yadav and his aide Sant Singh Yadav, were allegedly tonsured and humiliated by upper-caste men after it was found that they belonged to the Yadav caste. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media and was also shared by the SP chief, showed the accused purportedly saying, You are getting punished for coming to the village of Brahmins. The victims alleged they were interrogated about their caste, forced to show identification and subjected to humiliation. I was tortured all night. My head was shaved, and they sprinkled urine on me, saying it was to purify me, said Sant Singh Yadav. Following the video's circulation, four accused - Ashish Tiwari, Uttam Kumar Awasthi, Nikki Awasthi and Manu Dubey - all residents of the village, were arrested and booked. Akhilesh condemned the incident, calling it a gross violation of constitutional values and warned of a large-scale movement if action was not taken within three days. In response to Etawah violence, Singh in the evening emphasised the administration's swift response and affirmed the government's commitment to take strict measures moving forward. Based on the initial probe, four individuals were arrested, followed by the detention of 15 more people involved in the violence perpetrated by local miscreants, the minister said. The incident appears to be the result of a well-planned conspiracy, and the government is determined to uncover the truth and take strict action against those responsible, Singh said. He assured that anyone taking the law into their own hands, regardless of caste or community, will not be spared. Accusing Akhilesh of giving the incident a casteist angle, the minister said the former UP CM, without verifying the facts, made reckless statements which incited violence. It has always been the SP's strategy to divide society along caste and class lines for political gain. This is condemnable and unacceptable, Singh said. He added that the BJP respects Sanatan culture, not casteism.

MoRTH to frame IRC guidelines after adopting new-age machines for faster highway construction
NEW DELHI: After the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) decided to adopt Automated and Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) for highway development to ensure timely project completion, it announced that Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines will be prepared based on feedback from contractors and concessionaires. The ministry has already sanctioned atleast 16 projects, where innovative machines will be used. According to the officials, Cabinet approval is awaited for 10 projects envisaged for implementation of AIMC system. With a significant growth in the national highways network including a significant increase in Greenfield and Brownfield highways with high embankments requiring a significant amount of earthwork and proper compaction in the last one decade, it has been felt appropriate to induct AIMC in highway construction, said officials. The decision to formally adopt the system was taken after evaluation of efficacy in a pilot; Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Project, where in GPS-aided Motor Grader, Intelligent Compactor and Stringless Paver were used. The ministry also took into consideration the feedback from stakeholders and international guidelines and specifications. The ministry has also sought feedback on adoption of AIMC to formulate IRC guidelines, added officials. Officials added that the ministry would facilitate the concessionaire or contractor with the required license for the radio frequency range from the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) for the use of machines. The list of projects, which are already sanctioned, includes Western Bypass Gwalior (29 kms), 6-lane Greenfield Ludhiana Bypass (25 kms), Deoghar Bypass (49 kms), Shillong-Silchar Corridor (167 kms), Vrindavan Bypass (15 kms) and Patna-Arrah-Sasaram (125 kms) in Bihar. The projects which have been submitted for the Cabinet approval are Satellite Township Ring Road of Bengaluru (STRR) Karnataka (144 kms), BadveI Nellore Corridor (108 kms) in Andhra Pradesh, 4-lane access controlled Sirhind-Sehna section of NH-205AG (107 kms) in Punjab, and Nashik-Ahmednagar- Solapur-Akkalkot segment of the Surat-Chennai Expressway (374 kms). The ministry, in December, sought feedback from roads construction agencies, public work departments in states and union territories and other stakeholders on the proposal for adoption of the construction facilitated by innovatory. The benefits of AIMC are expected high adherence to design specification, improved rideability, performance durability and longevity and reduced wastage as well. The technology-driven construction also increases productivity, helps in real-time documentation, brings better transparency and minimises human interventions.

Panel to study reliance of students on coaching, fairness of entrance exams
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Education has constituted a nine-member panel to review concerns related to private coaching institutions, rise of dummy schools, and the effectiveness and fairness of entrance examinations, officials said on Friday. The committee headed by Secretary (Higher Education) Vineet Joshi is tasked with suggesting measures to reduce the dependency of students on coaching centres for their higher education needs. The committee will examine the gaps in the current schooling system that contribute to students reliance on coaching centres, particularly the limited focus on critical thinking, logical reasoning, analytical skills and innovation and the prevalence of rote learning practices, a senior Ministry of Education official told news agency PTI . The committee will also look into the mushrooming of dummy schools. Thousands of students preparing for engineering and medical entrance examinations prefer to take admission in dummy schools so that they can focus solely on competitive exam preparations. Aspirants often opt for dummy schools to benefit from state-specific admission quotas for medical and engineering colleges. For instance, students who complete their senior secondary education in Delhi qualify for the Delhi state quota in medical colleges, providing a strong incentive to enroll in dummy schools in the capital. The reasons behind the emergence of dummy schools will be examined and the panel will study their role in encouraging full-time coaching at the cost of formal schooling and suggest ways to mitigate them, the official said. The role and impact of formative assessments at school and higher education levels will be assessed and how their absence affects students conceptual understanding and preparedness for competitive examinations. The panel will also analyse the rising demand for quality higher education, limited availability of seats in premier institutions and how the imbalance drives students towards coaching institutes, he told PTI. Evaluating the awareness levels among students and parents regarding multiple career pathways and the impact of this lack of awareness on the over-dependence on a few elite institutions; assessing the availability and effectiveness of career counselling services in schools and colleges and suggesting measures for strengthening career guidance frameworks, are among other terms of reference of the committee. Other members of the panel include the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) chairman; joint secretaries from school education and higher education departments; representatives of IIT-Madras, NIT-Trichy, IIT-Kanpur and NCERT; and principals of schools (one each from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya and a private school). The move comes following complaints received by the Centre about rising cases of student suicides, accidents, lack of facilities in coaching institutes.
