Cyclone 'Shakti' may shift towards Gujarat: IMD alerts authorities
AHMEDABAD: In a developing weather threat that could impact thousands across the state's coastline, Cyclone Shakti, a tropical weather system brewing over the Arabian Sea, is showing signs of changing its course towards Gujarat, according to an alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As the storm edges closer, authorities have stepped up preparations across vulnerable regions, urging residentsespecially those in Saurashtra and Kutch to remain vigilant. The IMD has confirmed that Cyclone Shakti, which began forming over the Arabian Sea earlier this week, is exhibiting a gradual shift in trajectory, increasing the likelihood of it heading towards Gujarats coastline by October 6. In light of this shift, the meteorological department has issued official advisories for fishermen, port authorities, and residents in low-lying coastal areas, emphasising the importance of safety and early action. Though current models indicate the cyclone may weaken as it approaches the Gujarat coast, meteorologists have warned of rising wind speeds, cloudy skies, and potential localised disruptions over the next several days. While heavy rainfall is not expected, the weather systems unpredictable nature has kept disaster management teams on high alert. Following the advisory, fishing communities along the coast have been instructed not to venture into the sea, with maritime authorities already considering restrictions on port activity. The IMD also noted that temporary structures, small boats, and inland transport routes could face minor damage due to gusty winds, especially in areas close to the shore. Authorities are treating the situation with the seriousness of an environmental threat, deploying satellite tracking, radar monitoring, and predictive weather models to trace Cyclone Shaktis every move. These tools are vital in determining whether the system will maintain its current strength, weaken further, or shift closer inland; each scenario requires a different emergency response plan. Meanwhile, state disaster response teams have been placed on standby in districts most at risk, and local administrations have begun reviewing evacuation plans, food stockpiles, and shelter availability as precautionary measures. The ports of Porbandar, Veraval, and Mundra are under special watch due to their proximity to the storms potential impact zone. Although the storm is not classified as severe, officials are not taking any chances. Past experiences with sudden intensification of such systems have prompted the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) to issue a public safety advisory urging all coastal residents to stay tuned to IMD updates, avoid misinformation, and prepare emergency kits as a preventive measure. As of now, no major damage has been reported, but the next 48 hours will be crucial in determining the true course and intensity of Cyclone Shakti. With coordinated monitoring, proactive communication, and community preparedness, authorities hope to minimise risk and prevent casualties from what could otherwise become a dangerous weather event. While not classified as a disaster yet, Cyclone Shaktis potential shift towards Gujarat has triggered a chain of precautionary measures, showcasing how swiftly weather systems can threaten public safety. Residents are strongly advised to follow all official directives and avoid unnecessary exposure to coastal areas until the storm's threat has passed.
Gujarat diamond traders duped of Rs 4.80 crore in international online fraud
AHMEDABAD: In a shocking case that has rocked Gujarats Surats famed diamond market, six prominent diamond traders from the city have fallen victim to a sophisticated international online fraud. The con, orchestrated through the global diamond trading portal Rapnet, resulted in a total loss of Rs 4.80 crore worth of diamonds. The fraudster, operating under the alias Arson Isako, posed as a genuine international buyer and vanished without making payments after receiving the high-value consignments. The scam came to light when Sanjaybhai Jadavbhai Goti, a diamond trader operating under the name Neelkanth Solitaire in Mahidharpuras Shubham Building, reported a major fraud. A resident of Kapodra area, Sanjay had listed a consignment of diamonds worth Rs 81 lakh for sale on the online diamond trading platform Rapnet in March of the previous year. On June 3, Sanjay received a call from an unknown mobile number. The caller introduced himself as Arson Isako, claiming interest in purchasing the listed diamonds. Presenting himself as a reputed international trader, Isako requested the consignment to be delivered either to Dubai or Hong Kong. To verify the buyer's credibility, Sanjay conducted background checks within the diamond community, which at the time suggested the buyer was legitimate. Trusting the information, Sanjay arranged the shipment of the diamonds to Dubai through his friend Deepak Garmorani, who operates from a Dubai-based office. The consignment was successfully delivered, and initially, everything appeared in order. However, trouble began when Sanjaybhai followed up for payment. Despite multiple attempts, Isako stopped responding to calls and ceased all communication on WhatsApp, violating standard trade practices. Realizing he had been duped, Sanjaybhai began investigating independently within the diamond network of Surat. To his alarm, he discovered that he was not the only victim. Five other traders from Surat had been similarly conned by the same individual under the same pretense of international diamond purchase. The other victims were identified. Each trader had dispatched diamonds to Dubai on the basis of deals made through Rapnet, only to be met with silence and unreachable contacts once the goods were delivered. The total fraud across all six victims has amounted to an estimated Rs 4.80 crore. Following this discovery, Sanjay approached the Surat Crime Branch and lodged an official complaint against the fraudster. The Surat Crime Branch is now exploring multiple angles, including international cyber fraud, misuse of online trading platforms, and potential loopholes in the vetting process of such portals. Authorities are also coordinating with international counterparts to trace the whereabouts of the accused and recover the lost assets. This incident has sent ripples across Surats diamond market, highlighting the vulnerabilities in online trade practices, even in one of the worlds most secure and prestigious markets. It serves as a grim reminder for traders to exercise extreme caution, especially while dealing with international clients through digital platforms. The case is currently under active investigation, and more details are expected to emerge as the probe deepens into what could be part of a larger international racket targeting Indian diamond merchants.

CDSCO launches inspections of drug manufacturing units in six states after cough syrup deaths
NEW DELHI: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has initiated risk-based inspections of drug manufacturing units in six states following the collection of 19 samples, including cough syrups, antipyretics, and antibiotics, in the wake of child deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrups. The inspections cover manufacturing units in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, where the 19 drug samples were produced, sources in the health ministry said. The aim of the inspections, which began on Friday, is to identify gaps that may have led to drug quality failures and to suggest process improvements to prevent such incidents in the future, the ministry added. A multidisciplinary team comprising experts from the National Institute of Virology, Indian Council of Medical Research, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, CDSCO, and AIIMS-Nagpur continues to analyse the samples to assess the causes of deaths in and around Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. So far, six samples tested by CDSCO and three by the Madhya Pradesh Food and Drugs Administration (MPFDA) were found free of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG), chemicals known to cause severe kidney injury. However, these tested samples were not from the two suspected cough syrups, including Coldrif, which remain under investigation. At the request of the Madhya Pradesh government, the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration tested Coldrif syrup samples from the Sresan Pharma facility in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The results showed DEG levels beyond permissible limits, leading the Tamil Nadu government to ban the sale and order removal of the syrup from the market. Inspections were also conducted at Sresan Pharmas manufacturing facility in Sunguvarchathram, Kanchipuram district, with samples collected for analysis. The Madhya Pradesh government has also requested Himachal Pradesh authorities to test the other suspected cough syrup. On Saturday, the Madhya Pradesh government banned Coldrif syrup, following reports of nine child deaths due to suspected renal failure since September 7. Currently, 13 children, including eight from Chhindwara and Nagpur, are undergoing treatment. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that the sale of Coldrif and other products from the manufacturer has been banned, a state-level investigation team has been formed, and strict action will be taken against the guilty. Kerala has also suspended the sale of Coldrif syrup following concerns raised by other states, though preliminary inquiry revealed the flagged batch was not sold in the state, Kerala Health Minister Veena George clarified. Separately, tests on cough syrups from a Chennai-based company found adulteration, prompting authorities to halt production and demand explanations. In Rajasthan, the state has suspended the drug controller and halted distribution of all 19 medicines from Jaipur-based Kaysons Pharma, following the deaths of 11 children (nine in Madhya Pradesh and two in Rajasthan) allegedly linked to contaminated syrups. Distribution of all other cough syrups containing Dextromethorphan has also been suspended. An expert committee is being constituted to investigate the issue. The Drug Controller General of India advised that cough syrups should only be given to children above five years, and never to those under two years. Drugs potentially harmful to children and pregnant women will now carry clear warning labels. In Uttarakhand, joint teams from the health department and Food Safety and Drug Administration are conducting raids at medical stores, wholesale drug vendors, and hospital pharmacies across all districts. According to the Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Ltd (RMSCL), over 10,000 Kaysons Pharma drug samples have been tested since 2012, with 42 failing quality standards. As a precaution, the supply of all 19 medicines from the company has been suspended. The Union Health Ministrys DGHS issued an advisory stating that cough and cold medications should not be prescribed for children below two years. For children above five, usage should follow careful clinical evaluation, strict dosing, minimal duration, and avoidance of multi-drug combinations.

'I am just a worker,' says Jagdish Panchal in his first address as Gujarat BJP chief
AHMEDABAD: In a strategically timed move, Gujarat BJP has officially appointed senior leader Jagdish Panchal as its new state president, making him the 14th chief of the partys Gujarat unit. Panchal, who filed his nomination on Friday, was elected unopposed. He formally took charge at BJP Headquarter Kamalam in Gandhinagar on Saturday. The suspense surrounding Gujarat BJPs leadership ended dramatically on Saturday as Jagdish Panchal was declared the new state president. The announcement came from the partys state election committee, which also oversaw his formal assumption of charge at Kamalam. The process leading to his elevation bore the unmistakable mark of Delhis strategic planning. Panchal had filed his nomination for the post on Friday, and handed it over to election office. As no other candidate entered the fray, his unopposed selection was a foregone conclusion. While his name surprised many within the state unit, recent political movements hinted that the groundwork for Panchals rise was laid well in advance. BJPs decision to conduct a formal election something not done during the appointments of CR Patil and Jitu Vaghani underscored the partys intent to showcase internal democracy even as the outcome was pre-decided. According to insider accounts, Panchals ascent began two days before the announcement when he received an unexpected call from Delhi. Dropping all commitments, he boarded a flight to the capital and held a series of meetings with top BJP leadership, including strategists and central observers. Interestingly, his visit remained under wraps, with no social media posts or political buzz a sign of tightly controlled communication from the partys command center. Within hours of his return to Ahmedabad, BJP Headquarter began to hum with activity, confirming the leadership change was imminent. At his first public address after assuming charge on Saturday, Jagdish Panchal struck a tone of humility and dedication. The identity of the president is not me it is the worker who sits in front of me, he declared, bowing before the party cadre. He invoked the BJPs ideological lineage from Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and pledged to strengthen the philosophy of Panch Nishtha and Ekatma Manav Darshan through service-oriented politics. Panchal also paid homage to past Gujarat stalwarts including Keshubhai Patel, Vijay Rupani, and praised Former Gujarat BJP president Vajubhai Vala, Jitu Vaghani, and C.R. Patil, crediting them for transforming BJP into a banyan tree of public trust. Reaffirming faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he hailed BJP as a symbol of trust, development, and new ideas. He credited Modis governance model from the abrogation of Article 370 to economic reforms like GST for propelling India to the worlds fourth-largest economy, and vowed to continue that momentum under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patels leadership. Closing his address on a personal note, Panchal recalled his fathers words Walk thinner than water as his guiding principle in leadership. If I remove the party sash, I am just a common worker. My only identity is saffron and the lotus, he said. With Jagdish Panchals elevation, Gujarat BJP appears to have balanced political equations and infused organizational continuity, preparing the ground for upcoming local elections while reinforcing its message that the partys strength lies in its disciplined cadre and unwavering leadership chain.
From Delhi Ranji Star to BCCI President: Mithun Manhas Cricket Journey
Former cricketer, without an Indian cap, Mithun Manhas is now the new President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). With this, the BCCI has got another President who has played first-class cricket. He was a versatile middle-order batter who could also bowl off-spin and considered to be unlucky to have played in the middle order in an era when in Team India, No. 3 (Rahul Dravid), 4 (Sachin Tendulkar), 5 (Sourav Ganguly) and 6 (VVS Laxman) were sealed. He was unlucky but someone who was a very intelligent man, Akash Chopra says. Mithun Manhas cricket career is of nearly two decades: - Played 157 first-class matches, 9714 runs at an average of 45.82 with 27 hundreds and 49 fifties. - In List A cricket, played 130 matches, 4126 runs at 45.84. - T20s: Scored 1170 runs in 91 matches. - He was part of Delhis Ranji Trophy-winning side in 200708. First Class cricketers who became BCCI President: S Digvijaysinhji, Anthony de Mello, MK Vizianagaram, Fatehsinhji Gaekwad, Ramprakash Mehra, Raj Singh Dungarpur, Anurag Thakur, Sourav Ganguly, Roger Binny and Mithun Manhas. Many of them didnt play Tests. It was wrongly reported in the media that he is the first uncapped to be the BCCI President. IPL cricketer: He represented Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, and Pune Warriors between 2008 to 2014. Record: 55 matches, 38 innings, scoring 514 runs at an average of 22.35 and SR of 109+, with a highest score of 42*. Also took 20 catches and failed to claim a wicket in 8 overs bowled. So, after Sourav Ganguly, he is the second BCCI President to have played in the IPL. His IPL journey presents very interesting reading. He started with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) at Rs.12 lacs pa contract. He was almost on the bench in the inaugural season, played just one match and his contribution in the debut match was only one catch held. On the contrary played in 19 matches for them in the next two seasons. He was with the Pune Warriors for the next three seasons at Rs. 30 lacs pa and in comparison, played 20 matches in the first two seasons but only 3 in 2013. In 2014 he was a surprise pick for CSK at the same Rs. 30 lacs salary and was in MS Dhonis scheme for the season from start. Played 12 matches but couldnt encash the opportunity to perform, whenever situation warranted. He remained on the bench for the entire 2015 season. In a major change for CSK, they were banned from 2016-2017 due to a betting and corruption scandal, leading to key players being dispersed among other teams but no one picked Mithun Manhas and with this, his IPL career ended. Incidentally he is one of the few IPL cricketers, who were also taken as support staff in IPL. Kings XI Punjab, after having struggled for the next two seasons, after reaching the final in 2014, replaced the whole of the coaching staff for the 2017 season. This brought in Mithun Manhas in the role of assistant coach in the team. He was Jammu and Kashmir captain-cum-coach at that time and in the IPL side, worked with J Arun Kumar who was the batting coach. After two years in that role, he joined RCB as their assistant coach and worked in that same position for the Gujarat Titans also. Two IPL batting records related to Mithun Manhas are special. Worst IPL career batting record: Mithun Manhas played 55 matches but batted in only 38 innings. Among those who batted in 38 innings in IPL career, only one player has scored less than his 514 runs. However, among the recognized batsmen, his record is the worst. Least runs in in IPL career of 38 innings: Kuldeep Yadav 201 runs in 98 matches with HS 35*. Mithun Manhas 514 runs in 55 matches with HS 42*. Shahbaz Ahmed 545 runs in 58 matches with HS 59* RM Patidar 1111 runs in 42 matches with HS 112*, Among the above, only Mithun Manhas is not active in the IPL at present. 500 IPL career runs without a 50: He is one of the few with no IPL 50 in their career record, although recorded 500 runs or more. STR Binny 95 matches, 880 runs with HS 48*. Abdul Samad 63 matches, 741 runs with HS 45. AM Nayar 60 matches, 672 runs with HS 45*. PP Chawla 192 matches, 624 runs with HS 24*. JP Faulkner 60 matches, 527 runs with HS 46. Mithun Manhas 55 matches, 514 runs with HS 42*. Washington Sundar 66 matches, 512 runs with HS 49. AHMEDABAD: Jagdish Vishwakarma is all set to be elected unopposed as Gujarat BJP president, strengthening Ahmedabads grip on both the government and the party. His elevation, strategically timed ahead of local body polls, signals not only a caste-calibrated move to balance Patidar and OBC power but also sets the stage for a looming cabinet expansion under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The suspense over Gujarat BJPs leadership has ended with a decisive twist. Jagdish Vishwakarma, MLA from Nikol in Ahmedabad city, is set to be announced as the partys new state president. The announcement, overseen by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, marks the culmination of a process that began on October 2 and concluded Friday, with Vishwakarma emerging as the sole candidate backed unanimously by 292 state council members. His elevation is no ordinary development. For the first time in years, both the government and the party organisation are controlled by leaders from the same city: Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel from Ghatlodia in West Ahmedabad, and Vishwakarma from Nikol in East Ahmedabad. This rare concentration of power cements Ahmedabads dominance over Gujarats twin power centres Gandhinagars corridors of governance and the BJPs political machinery. The timing is crucial. With municipal and panchayat elections slated for next year, the BJP has deliberately handed the reins to an OBC leader, balancing caste equations in a state where Patel represents the Patidar stronghold. Vishwakarmas rise is being read as a direct counter to Congress, which recently appointed OBC leader Amit Chavda as its state president, signaling a head-on battle for backward class votes. But the story doesnt end with his election. Speculation is rife that Vishwakarmas tenure as president could be short-lived, as he is tipped to join the cabinet in the imminent reshuffle. If inducted, he would have to step down from the organisational post, triggering yet another leadership adjustment inside the BJP. Party strategists, however, insist that the Patel-Vishwakarma duo represents the perfect mix of Patidar strength and OBC outreach a social engineering model that will define the BJPs grassroots strategy leading into the 2027 Assembly polls. For now, the leadership question may be settled, but the spotlight shifts immediately to Gandhinagar, where the much-awaited cabinet expansion is expected to redraw Gujarats political map in the coming weeks.

During his visit, Shah, like all leaders, ministers and workers of his party, too shopped for Khadi clothing at one of the showrooms. Speaking about Mahatma Gandhis idea of Swadeshi, Shah said, By giving the country the concept of Swadeshi and khadi, Mahatma Gandhi not only accelerated the freedom movement but also brought light into the lives of many poor people in the country. He said when Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat in 2003, he launched a significant campaign to revive khadi, marking the beginning of this movement. He added: In the 11 years of Modi jis tenure, the sales of khadi and village industry products have increased fivefold from `33,000 crore to over `1.7 lakh crore now. I urge every family to purchase khadi products worth at least `5,000 annually, which will provide employment to millions of people and bring light into their lives. Taking a jibe at earlier governments, he remarked that the ideals of khadi and Swadeshi had long been forgotten. Citing the PMs Mann Ki Baat broadcast, he said the PM has promoted the idea of Swadeshi, inspiring people across the country to connect with economic development and the Make-in-India campaign. Inspired by this, millions of families across the country have decided not to use any foreign goods in their households, he said.

Gujarat BJP to elect new state president on October 4
AHMEDABAD: After months of speculation and a year-long delay, the Gujarat BJP is finally set to elect its new state president. With the form-filling process beginning on 3 October and voting scheduled for 4 October, the suspense over caste and regional equations has intensified. Sources say the next president is likely to be an OBC leader, balancing against the Patidar chief minister and shaping the partys strategy ahead of local polls in December and the 2027 Assembly elections. The one-year-long uncertainty over the Gujarat BJPs state president has finally reached a decisive point. After prolonged deliberations, the party has officially announced the election schedule, ending months of speculation and backroom manoeuvring. According to the programme, forms will be filled on 3 October between 11 am and 2 pm, followed by verification from 3 pm to 4 pm. Candidates will have the option to withdraw between 5 pm and 5:30 pm. The next morning, voting will be conducted from 10 to 11 am on 4 October, with the counting and announcement of results by 11:30 am. This election holds unusual significance because of the caste and regional balancing act the BJP leadership has been struggling with for nine months. While Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel hails from the Patidar community and represents Ghatlodia in central Gujarat, outgoing state president C.R. Patil represents South Gujarat. That makes it almost certain, insiders say, that the new president will be chosen from the OBC community, most likely from Saurashtra or North Gujarat. The importance of this exercise is not merely symbolic. With local body elections scheduled in December and the 2027 Assembly polls on the horizon, the new state president will carry the responsibility of ensuring a united front while managing the factional pulls of leaders like Amit Shah, Anandiben Patel, and C.R. Patil, each of whom commands significant influence within Gujarat BJP. Meanwhile, the political buzz at Kamalam, the party headquarters in Gandhinagar, has reached fever pitch. Preparations are underway, with a pavilion being built, as leaders and workers keenly debate caste equations and ideological leanings. Since the chief minister is a Patidar, the consensus is that the presidents chair is reserved for an OBC leader, a move aimed at electoral arithmetic and broader social outreach. Adding to the intrigue is the role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Traditionally watchful, the RSS has been unusually assertive this time. At the 25 August Kamalam meeting held to plan Prime Minister Narendra Modis birthday Seva Pakhwada, RSS Gujarat Prant Karyavah Shailesh Patel was seen alongside BJP MLAs, MPs, and office-bearers, the first such joint appearance in years. Sources suggest that the Sangh is keen on a president with a clear ideological grounding, further complicating the already delicate selection process. The political shadow of Anandiben Patel, now Governor of Uttar Pradesh, also looms large. Her recent Gujarat visit, including a stop at Khodaldham in Kagwad, Rajkot, is being read as significant. Sources claim she met several state leaders and may have conveyed the ground mood to the national leadership, shaping the final choice of president. For the BJP, the stakes could not be higher. The party knows that in Gujarat, where caste and regional identity can tilt the political balance, the choice of the next state president will decide not just the December civic polls but also lay the foundation for the 2027 Assembly battle.
NEW DELHI/BHUJ: In a stern warning to Pakistan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said any misadventure by Islamabad in the Sir Creek sector will invite a decisive response that will be strong enough to change both history and geography. Singh's remarks at a military base near the India-Pakistan border in Gujarat's Bhuj came against the backdrop of the neighbouring country expanding military infrastructure in the disputed region. The defence minister celebrated Dussehra with soldiers and performed 'shastra puja' (worship of weapons) on the occasion. Singh also said that the Indian military successfully achieved all the objectives of Operation Sindoor and starting a war with Pakistan by escalating the situation was not its aim. The operation exposed Pakistan's air defence and proved India's decisive capability, he said. However, his comments on the disputed Sir Creek sector drew much attention. If Pakistan dares to act in the Sir Creek sector, the reply will be so strong that it will change both history and geography, the minister said. In 1965, the Indian Army showed courage by reaching Lahore and in 2025, Pakistan must remember that the road to Karachi also passes through the creek, he said. Sir Creek is a 96-km-long tidal estuary between Gujarat's Rann of Kutch and Pakistan. It is considered a disputed region due to varying interpretations of maritime boundary lines by the two sides. The defence minister drew attention to the fact that even after 78 years of independence, Pakistan continues to create disputes over the Sir Creek sector, despite India's repeated efforts to resolve the issue through dialogue. Pakistan's recent expansion of military infrastructure in the Sir Creek sector reflects its ill intention, he said. Any misadventure by Pakistan in the Sir Creek sector will invite a decisive response, he said. Singh also virtually inaugurated the tidal berthing facility and a joint control centre (JCC) in the strategic sector. The facilities will act as major enablers for integrated coastal operations while significantly enhancing joint operational capability, coastal security coordination and rapid response to any threats, according to the defence ministry. In his remarks, Singh lauded the Indian armed forces for successfully thwarting Pakistan's attempts to breach India's defence network during Operation Sindoor. Pakistan tried to penetrate India's defences from Leh to Sir Creek sector, but the swift and effective counter-action of the Indian forces not only exposed the weaknesses of Pakistan's air defence system but also sent out a clear message to the world that India can inflict heavy damage at a time, place and manner of its choosing, he said. Singh underlined that despite having the capability, India demonstrated restraint as Operation Sindoor was aimed at countering terrorism and not provoking a wider conflict. He expressed satisfaction that all military objectives of Operation Sindoor were successfully achieved and reaffirmed that India's fight against terrorism will continue with full resolve. Escalating it and starting a war was not the objective of Operation Sindoor. I am happy that Indian forces have successfully achieved all the military objectives of Operation Sindoor. But our fight against terrorism continues, he said. In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan. The strikes triggered four days of intense clashes that ended on May 10 with an understanding on stopping military actions. Lauding the success of Operation Sindoor, Singh said it was possible due to the seamless jointness of the armed forces. He congratulated the soldiers and officers for their strategy, courage and capability that proved India's ability to defeat its adversaries under any circumstances. It was the jointness of our armed forces that executed Operation Sindoor in record time. On this occasion today, I also want to extend special congratulations to our brave soldiers and officers for the success of Operation Sindoor, Singh said. Your strategy, your courage and your capability have proven that India is capable of defeating the enemy in every situation. I am fully confident that the courage of all of you, the valour of all of you will continue to protect India's sovereignty and integrity, he added. The defence minister described the Army, the Air Force and the Navy as hree pillars of India's strength. When these three services work together, only then can we effectively face every challenge, he said. Singh has been performing 'shastra puja' on Dussehra for the last several years, including during his tenure as the Union home minister in the previous NDA government. For us, weapons are not just tools. Weapons are not merely for displaying power. Rather, we believe that weapons are a means to establish righteousness, he said. The defence minister said 'shastra puja' is not merely a ritual, but a reflection of India's civilisational philosophy, where weapons are regarded as instruments of dharma and not just tools of violence. He drew parallels from Indian tradition where farmers worship their plough, students revere their books and soldiers honour their weapons. Singh stressed that weapons must always be used for the protection of justice and righteousness. Knowledge without the power to defend it is vulnerable and power without the guidance of knowledge leads to chaos. The balance of 'shaastra' (knowledge) and 'shastra' (weapons) keeps our civilisation vibrant and invincible, he added. The defence minister also talked about the challenges along India's borders. The challenges have never been simple and they come in different forms. At times, these challenges appear in the form of external aggression, at times as terrorist organisations and in today's world, they also appear in the form of cyber warfare and information warfare, he added. Extending his greetings on the occasion of Vijayadashami, Singh said the festival is a reminder that no matter how powerful evil may appear, it is righteousness that ultimately prevails. The worship of weapons on this day is deeply connected with India's national life as it represents respect for the country's collective strength, security and freedom, he said.

Khushi Patel remembers how, as a child, she would wait for those nine nights when her home and community would be ready to dive into Navaratri festivities. In every Gujarati home in Thiruvananthapuram, the colours of Navaratri would stand out. The elders would be on their fasts, and youngsters would be preparing for the gala event where they would get to swirl in their flowing lehengas to the spirited dandiya beats. We would wait for it throughout the year, says Khushi. The pomp has reduced, as many Gujarati families have returned to their home state for better business and professional prospects than Kerala. Yet, come Navaratri, dandiya is held religiously. We now hold it in rented halls. Earlier, it was at the Gujarati Samajs own auditorium at East Fort, which was closed down when the population dwindled. This time, it is being held at Avittam Thirunal community hall near Attukal temple, says Nandlal Patel, secretary of the Gujarati Samaj. Khushi, however, feels the festival scene is pepping up as many Gujaratis relocated to work at the Vizhinjam port. Also, the interest of Malayalis in the dance form is increasing. There are many places now where the dance is held during Navaratri, she says. Khushi had conducted a three-day workshop, teaching the nuances of the dance form. Legend is that the artform is a replica of the mythological battle between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura. The dandiya sticks represent the sword of Durga. The dance also has a flow of joy (or ras), which is symbolically related to the dance of Krishna with gopis. Apart from the tales, the dance is enjoyed for the peppy elements it incorporates. Malayalis are finding it a fun way to shake a leg and bond over the community art form. Dandiya has gone public now. Many groups and even hotels are organising it this year, albeit with a DJ twist as opposed to the traditional way, says Priya Harikumar, founder of Firebirds, a women-centric infotainment group. Firebirds is also organising a dandiya night on October 1. We held it last year, too. And the response was huge. The night of dancing and dining will be for women and children. It is a fun way to celebrate the festival spirit and to bond, says Priya, who feels people are looking for avenues like this where they could let off their steam. Our group aims to help such women. The modernisation is also visible among the Gujarati community. It is still held religiously by people who are fasting. However, the choreographies now include popular dance moves. Social media has played a part in the transformation, Khushi observes. At Technopark-based IBS Software, employees were given tips on dandiya steps. It can help them break the ice faster and bond. Its a community-based dance, and now the venues hosting dandiya in the capital are increasing, says Khushi. This year, dandiya venues are open at hotels like O by Tamara, Cordial Sopanam, and Hyacinth. Some have even hyped up the event to include prizes for the best performance.

High carb, saturated fat leading to diabetes and obesity: ICMR study
NEW DELHI: Indias rapidly changing eating habits with high consumption of refined carbohydrates like wheat and white rice and saturated fat are fuelling a dramatic rise in diabetes and obesity, a latest ICMR study said. The study by the Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) recommended that Indians should replace these diets with plant, milk and animal-based proteins. The study, published in Nature Medicine, also revealed that while there was significant diversity in nutrient intakes across the states, most Indians get a staggering 62% of their calories from carbohydrates, one of the worlds highest rates. The cross-sectional survey, conducted in collaboration with the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), also found that a significant portion of carbohydrates comes from low-quality sources, such as white rice, milled whole grains, and added sugar. While white rice dominates diets in the South, East, and Northeast, wheat is more common in the North and Central regions. The study, which surveyed 1,21,077 Indian adults from urban and rural areas of 36 states, found that high carbohydrate calories and their primary food sources were associated with increased metabolic risk like diabetes, prediabetes and obesity. Speaking with this paper, Dr V Mohan, senior author of the paper and Chairman, MDRF, said, Replacing just 5% of daily calories from carbohydrates with plant or dairy proteins significantly lowers risk of developing diabetes and prediabetes. Importantly, replacing carbs with red meat protein or fats did not have the same protective effect, he said. More than sugar, it is the rice and wheat which is eaten in excess and which are fuelling NCDs, especially diabetes. Dr RM Anjana, lead author and President of MDRF, said that their findings clearly show that typical Indian diets, which are heavy in carbohydrates from white rice or whole wheat flour and low in quality protein, are putting millions at risk. Simply switching from white rice to whole wheat or millets is not enough unless total carbohydrate intake decreases and more calories come from plant or dairy proteins. However, the intakes of dairy and animal protein varied widely but remained low nationwide. Sudha, joint first author and Senior Scientist and Head of the Department of Foods, Nutrition, and Dietetics Research at MDRF, noted that similar metabolic risks were observed across all regions, regardless of the primary carbohydrate sources. These nationwide findings should inspire policy reforms, especially regarding food subsidies and public health messaging to help Indians shift towards diets richer in plant-based and dairy proteins, and lower in carbohydrates and saturated fats. Dr Shilpa Bhupathiraju, co-senior author, said reducing saturated fat is a challenge. Encouraging healthier oils and more pulses and legumes could make a major difference to the health of the nation. The study found that millets, as a main staple, are consumed in only three states: Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, with primary types including finger millet (ragi), sorghum (jowar), and pearl millet (bajra).the terrain is to their advantage, the official said.
