Centre assesses Adarsh Gram scheme, seven in Odisha under review ambit
BHUBANESWAR : A decade after the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) was launched, the central government has begun an exercise to assess the progress and impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modis pet initiative. The move comes in the midst of ground-based reports that much has not changed in the villages adopted by the MPs under the scheme in terms of their all-round development. The MPs were tasked to pick a village each under their constituency and ensure its holistic development, including basic amenities like proper roads, water supply and sanitation along with other infrastructure and facilities. Official sources said in Odisha, seven-gram panchayats in Angul, Jagatsinghpur, Kalahandi, Bhadrak, Khurda, Nabarangpur and Nayagarh districts have been included in the nationwide study that will continue till November 27. Those included from the state are Andharua GP (Khurda) adopted by Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra, Bhatangpadar (Kalahandi) adopted by former RS member Sujeet Kumar and Lunahandi (Angul) adopted by former MP Nitesh Ganga Deb. Other panchayats selected for the study are Arana (Jagatsinghpur) adopted by former MP Rajashree Mallick, Ambaroli (Bhadrak) adopted by former MP Manjulata Mandal, Badakumuli (Nabarangpur) adopted by former MP Ramesh Chandra Majhi and Rasanga (Nayagarh) adopted by former MP Achyutananda Samanta. The assessment will include how the villages have been transformed after adoption by their MPs under SAGY. If there has not been much improvement, it will seek reasons and fix accountability. The study will find out the bottlenecks in the implementation of the programme which will ultimately help devise new and effective strategies. Wherever it has been a success, the best practices will serve as models, sources said. The study team will also ascertain why the MPs were not identifying GPs at the desired pace even though they are aware of the benefits of the scheme. They will collect suggestions for revision of the scheme and explore solutions to remove investment barriers and promote private investments in such GPs, the sources said. As per the SAGY portal of the Ministry of Rural Development, as many as 1,440 panchayats were selected in 2014-19 and 1,921 panchayats in 2019-24 while more than 2.29 lakh projects have been completed under village development plan (VDP). Odisha is placed at 16th position among states and UTs in terms of progress of VDP with around 72.86 per cent projects getting completed. Gujarat and West Bengal topped the chart with 100 per cent completion rate.

Tamil Nadu to introduce Battery Energy Storage Systems to boost green energy infrastructure
CHENNAI: In a major step towards strengthening renewable energy infrastructure, Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGEC) is set to introduce Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for the first time in the state. Under the central governments Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme, 30% of the capital cost for BESS, or `27 crore per MW, whichever is lower, will be provided as financial support. Tamil Nadu is among the six renewable energy-rich states that was allocated BESS capacities under the initiative alongside Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Maharashtra. A senior official told TNIE, The Ministry of Power has issued operational guidelines for the state component of the VGF Scheme to promote BESS. With over 70% of renewable energy capacity connected to interstate transmission systems (InSTS), there is a critical need to support state utilities in developing InSTS-connected BESS, especially in states with high solar energy generation. The BESS installations are planned at Tangedco and Tantransco substations to enhance energy storage and distribution. Currently, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is conducting a detailed feasibility study across its 1,091 substations, including 765 kV, 400 kV, and 230 kV facilities. Setting up 1 MW of BESS requires 4 to 5 acres of land, and suitable locations are being inspected, another official said. The process of identifying feasible sites is ongoing, after which tenders will be floated for bidders, the official added. The Central Electricity Authoritys recent National Electricity Plan has also highlighted the growing need for energy storage systems as renewable energy integration increases. To ensure grid stability and manage peak loads, adopting BESS is essential, the official said. Why adopt BESS BESS initiative marks a significant move towards making Tamil Nadu a leader in renewable energy management and storage solutions

EV tax break sparks hope; questions persist
HYDERABAD: The governments announcement of a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles (EVs) has evoked mixed reactions from stakeholders and experts. While the move to promote green mobility and environment-friendly vehicles has been widely welcomed, concerns are being raised about addressing existing challenges in manufacturing, battery technology and charging infrastructure. Speaking to TNIE, Venugopal Rao Nellutla, an electric mobility expert and independent consultant, called the tax exemption commendable for boosting consumer confidence by reducing EV costs. However, he urged the government to prevent unethical practices, such as the artificial inflation of ex-showroom prices by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) or dealers of EVs. To safeguard consumer interests and maintain policy integrity, he suggested introducing a price monitoring mechanism. He recommended establishing a regulatory body to track and audit EV pricing trends before and after the exemptions implementation. Drawing parallels with the Gujarat Energy Development Agency model, Venugopal said the government should mandate transparency in pricing. OEMs and dealers must provide a detailed price breakup, including the manufacturer billing price, logistics, margins and taxes, to ensure consumers, particularly ill-informed buyers of three-wheeler EVs, are fully informed, he said, adding that penalties should be imposed on violators for manipulating prices. Focus on infra Alwala Devender Reddy, founder of Eride E-Mobility, highlighted the policys potential to reduce vehicular emissions and contribute to Indias goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2070. Speaking to TNIE, he noted improvements in battery safety following the introduction of the Automotive Research Association of India and International Centre for Automotive Technology standards. New software and awareness initiatives have mitigated battery-related incidents. Transitioning from lithium-ion to hydrogen batteries is the next step, he said. However, Devender highlighted the urgent need to expand charging infrastructure, especially along highways. He also advocated for a unified One Nation, One EV Policy to accelerate EV adoption, stressing that EVs and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles would need to coexist during the transition phase. Concerns of consumers Auto drivers expressed apprehensions about the policys impact on existing CNG, LPG and ICE-powered auto-rickshaws. We are awaiting detailed guidelines. The government must ensure support for non-EV rickshaws to prevent their marginalisation under the new policy, said Sathi Reddy, a member of the Joint Action Committee of the Auto Drivers Union. Consumers, while welcoming the tax exemption, flagged issues of range anxiety and inadequate charging stations as barriers to choosing EVs over ICE vehicles. Experts also acknowledged the issue of range anxiety among EV users, particularly car owners, and emphasised the need for further R&D in this area. Mahesh Kumar, a car rental business owner from Rangareddy, said, The incentives on road tax and registration fees sound profitable, but range and charging time challenges make me hesitant to switch to EVs immediately.

Surat dog bite controversy escalates, High Court issues notice to police
AHMEDABAD: In a puzzling twist, Surats dog bite saga reached the Gujarat High Court, courtesy of the police pushing the case forward despite the possibility of bail being granted at the station. The High Court has summoned the Assistant Sub-Inspector to explain this escalation. A simmering feud between two families in Surat's Althan area over a dog bite incident has taken a legal turn. The conflict began a month and a half ago when a child was bitten by a dog, triggering complaints from both sides. The dogs owners filed a counter-complaint against the childs parents, alleging unfair treatment. Despite the time elapsed, tensions remain unresolved. The childs parents have now moved the High Court, alleging procedural lapses by the police. They claim the complaint against them, eligible for bail at the police station level, was escalated unnecessarily to court. Responding to their application, the High Court has issued a notice summoning the Assistant Sub-Inspector of Althan police station for an explanation. On October 2, a pet dog attacked the son of Dineshbhai, a bank employee residing in Surats Althan area. The attack occurred moments after Dineshbhai and his son exited the societys lift, leaving the child with severe injuries. Following the incident, the childs mother, Khushbu Sharma, lodged a complaint with the Vesu police. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case against the dogs owners, Ashish Dubey and Prashant Tripathi. My husband and son were taking the elevator to the 12th floor. When the door opened, my son stepped out first, followed by my husband. Suddenly, our neighbor Ashish Dubeys dog attacked my son, biting his left leg and causing bleeding and injuries, the child's mother told to the media at that time. She added, When my husband tried to rescue our son, the dog injured him as well. The wounds were serious enough that they both had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. On October 4, the childs mother lodged a formal complaint at Althan police station against the owners of the dog involved in the attack. Ashish Dubey and Prashant Tripathi, the dogs owners, alleged that the complainants family entered their home, engaged in a heated argument, and physically assaulted them. The parents of the child have approached the High Court, seeking to quash the FIR filed against them. In their petition, they alleged that despite the case involving only bailable offences, the police unnecessarily produced them in court instead of granting bail at the police station. Taking note of the petition, the High Court issued a notice to the Assistant Sub-Inspector and directed him to appear before the court.

10 days left, 70L NFSA beneficiaries still to get e-KYC verification
BHUBANESWAR: With the November deadline for completing the e-KYC verification of ration cards nearing its end, nearly 70 lakh beneficiaries of the state covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) are yet to get their Aadhaar seeding done. Without e-KYC verification, a beneficiary will be debarred from getting the free ration provided by the Centre. Ganjam district has been particularly laggard on this front with more than 5.42 lakh beneficiaries still to complete their self-authentication through biometric process and Aadhaar seeding with the ration cards. A majority of them are migrant workers, mostly those who have moved to Gujarat. Around 26.52 lakh people in this southern district are covered under NFSA and only 21.09 lakh of them have completed e-KYC verification, said a report of the Food Supplies department. Ganjam is followed by Kalahandi where over 4.72 lakh beneficiaries face the threat of their names being removed from the food security list as they have only 10 days time to do the Aadhaar seeding. Of the 14.23 lakh beneficiaries in the district, around 9.51 lakh have met the mandatory requirement. Other districts which have large to do list include Balasore at 3.15 lakh, Balangir 2.83 lakh, Bargarh 2.26 lakh, Bhadrak 1.83 lakh and Angul 1.49 lakh. The state government launched e-KYC on August 22 this year with September 25 as the last date. Of the 3.26 crore NFSA beneficiaries in the state, e-KYC verification could be completed for only 25.75 lakh by August 31. After realising the infrastructure deficiencies, internet connectivity and other technical problems, the state government extended the date to November 30. However, as the situation stands, it is virtually impossible to complete e-KYC of 70 lakh people within 10 days given the multifarious problems the people and PDS dealers are facing, said state convener, Campaign for Food, Samit Panda. Reports coming from districts said updating Baal Aadhaar cards are taking time. Since newborns are eligible for a Baal Aadhaar card, the same needs to be updated with the childs biometrics once he or she is older than 5 years with renewal once he or she crosses the age of 15. However, even as the e-KYC process struggles to make headway, the government claimed to be ready to issue new cards from the start of the new year. More than 16 lakh ineligible beneficiaries have been identified so far and ration cards will be issued to new beneficiaries from January 2025, Food Supplies minister Krushna Chandra Patra said.

CHENNAI: Millets are small-seeded plants grown around drought-resistant farmlands. They grow well in arid and semi-arid regions, hence, Africa and Asia have been the heart of millet cultivation. Millets are versatile both as a crop and as an ingredient. As a crop, they are sustainable, drought resistant, pest resistant, and have short growth time. As an ingredient, there are multiple recipes that use various millets in various forms like flour and grain. This superfood has been a major part of the Indian diet since ancient times (almost 7,000 years) and there are multiple mentions of this foodgrain in the Vedas too. In the 1960s, the Indian government started promoting high-yielding varieties of rice and wheat. Known as Project Green Revolution, it aimed at alleviating poverty and hunger by increasing the yield multiple times. So, easily grown cash crops were cultivated more, and millets started taking a backseat, leading to a loss of agricultural biodiversity. Millets porridge has been a staple food across the world. India has its fermented porridge (koozhu), the Chinese make it with red beans and sweet potato, and the Germans have it with milk and apples. Developed countries have been using it as cattle and chicken feed for a long time. India is the largest producer and exporter of millets contributing to about 45 percent of the worlds produce. The campaign of the Indian Government as part of the Food Safety mission to promote millets succeeded when the FAO of WHO declared 2023 as the International year of Millets. Common millets in India include finger millet (ragi), foxtail millet (thinai), pearl millet (kambu), little millet (samai), barnyard millet (kuthirai vali), jowar (cholam) and the less common ones like panivaragu, amaranth seeds, etc. Each area has a millet recipe indigenous to that area like bajra roti in Rajasthan and Gujarat, ragi mudde or kali in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, joladar roti in Karnataka, and chola sadam in Tamil Nadu. The health benefits of millets are a major reason for their revival. The most important benefit is their lower GI index, which means the fluctuations in blood sugar after consumption are lower, making them suitable for diabetic patients, too. The high fibre content makes it beneficial for patients with hypertension, high cholesterol, constipation, and bloating. The presence of high fibre acts as a prebiotic and decreases bloating. Compared to other cereals, they contain more minerals, zinc, calcium, and trace elements, which helps boost immunity in all ages. As they are naturally gluten-free, they are good for people with celiac disease. The high levels of magnesium, along with the absence of allergens, make cereals suitable for people with asthma and allergies. The presence of antioxidants like quercetin, and curcumin adds to its antioxidative properties. However, there are certain things to be noted. Millets have antinutrients like phytates, tannins, and oxalate, which can prevent the absorption of other essential nutrients. In addition, they also contain polyphenols that can have a goitrogenic effect and hence people with hypothyroidism are advised to consume it occasionally. To overcome the antinutrient effects, certain steps are advised to follow while consumption. These include parboiled, soaking, germinating, dry roasting, and fermenting. In a nutshell, its better to switch over to a millet-based diet slowly and consistently, starting with a couple of times a week so that the changes are sustainable and beneficial. SC flags delay in delimitation exercise in 3 states
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre to inform it on the next hearing date why the long-pending delimitation exercises in the states of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur have yet to be conducted. A dissatisfied bench of two top court judges, led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, made it clear that there is a statutory mandate for the exercise. During the hearing, the apex court recorded that in February 2020, then President Ram Nath Kovind had rescinded an earlier order to defer the delimitation exercise in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Assam. But what you (Centre) were doing so far? What have you been doing for four years? What have you done to set the ball rolling? the court asked Additional Solicitor General of India (ASG) KM Nataraj, seeking its status. The apex court passed these remarks after hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking directions to ensure that the delimitation exercise is carried out in the three states. The plea said the process of delimitation for states is a constitutional obligation that has not been met in the four states for the past 51 years. The apex court also said that this was done after noting that the security conditions in these states had improved. However, steps for delimitation were only taken in Assam. Questioning the delay committed by the Centre, the apex court asked why similar measures have not been taken for the other three states. Once the President rescinds the notification (deferring delimitation), it is enough, Justice Kumar noted. On being questioned, ASG Nataraj tried to explain that the situation in the northeastern states is sensitive, with locals in Arunachal allegedly opposing the delimitation process. At the end of the hearing, the top court sought responses from the Central government, the Election Commission of India and the states of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh in July 2022, and fixed the matter for further hearing in January 2025, when the ASG had to take instructions from the Centre and inform it about the status of it. Take instructions. Exercise has to be done. It is a statutory mandate. If 12A (Delimitation Act) is not re-notified, then you are in difficulty, the apex court said. Notably, Section 8A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 provides for the delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur or Nagaland. Also in top court Anticipatory bail to former IAS officer The top court on Monday granted protection from arrest to former IAS officer Pradip N Sharma in a case related to alleged irregularities in the allotment of around 150 acres of land in Bhuj district of Gujarat. The relief granted will not have much impact as Sharma has been in custody for over four years linked to multiple cases. SC told of e-content for disabled kids The NCERT has brought out guidelines for development of e-content for children with disabilities, which would be applicable for school education, the Centre has told the Supreme Court. The government has said the NCERT has also held face-to-face training orientation programmes for teachers in 2022-23.
Ahmedabad Diary | Fake judges to fake hospitals: Gujarat hub for scamsters
Gujarat has recently seen a surge in scams, highlighted by the closure of a multispecialty hospital just 18 hours after its grand inauguration. It was reportedly established by two fake doctors in collaboration with an administrator in Surat. On November 17, they, who were caught drinking, set up the hospital, which was found to have no proper registration or fire safety equipment. Then a photo emerged showing a police officer attending the facilitys inauguration and sitting in the doctors chair. This incident adds to a growing list of fake officials, ranging from judges to tax officers, creating a wave of disbelief in the community. Is Cabinet expansion set to include Modhwadia? The long-awaited cabinet expansion appears to gaining momentum, increasing the likelihood that former Congress leaders Arjun Modhwadia and C J Chavda, who recently joined BJP, will be included in the state government. Discussions have intensified regarding the addition of seven to eight BJP MLAs in the cabinet. If the expansion takes place, it would strengthen the positions of Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor, both former Congress members who were previously promised cabinet roles. The expansion will once the Maharashtra elections get over, according to sources. Major rejig in police admin expected in Dec The state government is expected to affect a reshuffle in the Indian Police Service (IPS), including some officer transfers, in early December ahead of local body elections, according to sources in Gandhinagar. With four senior IPS officers set to retire, promotions are likely to occur. Should senior officer Shamsher Singh be assigned to a position in Delhi, those next in line may receive promotions. Also, preparations for appointing a new DGP are in progress, as the current DGP, Vikas Sahay, will retire in June 2025. The upcoming transfers could impact police commissioners, SPs, and other senior officials. Dilip Singh Kshatriya Our correspondent in Gujarat dilipsingh@newindianexpress.com

BRS, BJP unite to stall growth in TG: Revanth
Warangal : Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy launched a scathing attack on BRS president K. Chandrashekar Rao for evading accountability, and BJP Telangana president and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy for parroting the line of the BRS. Instead of hiding in the farmhouse and letting two cheap leaders, Billa (K.T. Rama Rao) and Ranga (T. Harish Rao), talk nonsense every day, KCR should come to the Assembly and address people's issues directly, he said while speaking at a massive public rally, Indira Mahila Shakti Praja Palana Vijayotsavam, held at the Arts and Science College ground in Hanamkonda on Tuesday. Revanth Reddy accused the BRS and BJP of plotting against Telanganas progress. They are conspiring to obstruct developmental works initiated by the Congress government. But we will not back down. We are ready to send them to jail if needed, he warned. Revanth Reddy reiterated his long-standing challenge to the BRS. When I became TPCC chief in 2021, I declared that I would defeat BRS and KCR in the Assembly polls. I fulfilled my promise. I now declare that I will not let the sapling of KCR or BRS grow again in Telangana, he asserted, vowing to dismantle the BRS. The Chief Minister accused Kishan Reddy of acting in coordination with BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao. Whenever KTR speaks against the Congress, Kishan Reddy parrots the same criticism the next day, as if theres an understanding between them, he remarked. Revanth Reddy criticised Kishan Reddy for his remarks about the Congress deference to AICC leader Sonia Gandhi. Referring to Kishan Reddy's criticism that Revanth Reddy was Sonia's slave, the CM said: Sonia Gandhi is the mother of Telangana's 4 crore people. Touching her feet and seeking blessings is not servitude; its respect. Revanth Reddy accused Kishan Reddy of betraying Telangana by aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who once belittled the passage of the statehood legislation in Parliament. Without Sonia Gandhi, the six-decade long dream of achieving statehood for Telangana would not have been fulfilled. Modi insulted and betrayed the people of Telangana with his statement in Parliament that the Telangana Bill was passed in an improper manner by closing doors and switching off lights. Kishan Reddy should be ashamed of doing gulamgiri to Modi who insulted Telangana. He should wash the feet of Sonia Gandhi and sprinkle water on his head to get rid of at least some of his sins, Revanth Reddy said, referring to the BJP state president. Revanth Reddy said Kishan Reddy had no moral right to stay in Telangana and he should pack his bags and leave for Gujarat. Kishan Reddy boasts that PM Modi cleansed the Sabarmati river in Gujarat. Why is he obstructing the cleaning of the Musi river here? Instead of sleeping near the Musi river, he should be thankful to the people of Secunderabad who made him MP, and not Modi, Revanth Reddy said. He highlighted the Congress governments achievements in its 10-month rule, including creating 50,000 government jobs, waiving 18,000 crore in farm loans for 22 lakh farmers, and facilitating the cultivation of a record 66 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. KCR warned farmers against cultivating paddy, calling it suicidal. But under Congress, Telangana has truly become the rice bowl of the country, he stated. Revanth Reddy highlighted the Congress's commitment to women's empowerment, contrasting it with Chandrashekar Raos governance. He criticised the former chief minister for excluding women from his Cabinet, whereas the Congress appointed two women leaders from Warangal, Danasari Anasuya Seethakka and Konda Surekha, likening them to goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma. Under Congress, women finally feel liberated after 10 years of BRS misrule, he added. Revanth Reddy accused Chandrashekar Rao of turning Telangana into a state of drunkards. By opening countless liquor shops, KCR became the unanimous president of Telanganas drunkards' association, he said, accusing him of prioritizing revenue over public welfare. Revanth Reddy asserted that Telangana had lost nothing except the dominance of Chandrashekar Raos family after the defeat of the BRS in the Assemnly elections last year. Because Telangana removed KCR and his family from power, the youth got jobs, womens self-help groups received interest-free loans, and farmers got rid of debt burden, he declared.

BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh becomes first state to declare The Sabarmati Report movie tax-free
BHOPAL:The BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, became on Monday afternoon, the first state in the country, to declare the recently released Hindi movie, The Sabarmati Report tax-free. The significant announcement was made by the central Indian states CM Dr Mohan Yadav in Bhopal. The events of the past have been presented factually in the film. The film is being made tax-free so that more and more people can watch it. I too will watch the movie, which will also be watched by my ministers, MLAs and MPs. I hope this movie brings out the true reality of the black chapter of the past, which has largely been distorted due to vote bank politics, Yadav added. Importantly, the MP CM made the key announcement just a few hours before he flew to Gujarat to hold talks with the states CM and ministers over a host of issues. The announcement was made just a day after PM Narendra Modi (who was the Gujarat CM during the time of the horrific incident and subsequent riots), while referring to The Sabarmati Report movie, had stated on social media, Its good that this truth is coming out. A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Adding to the PMs praise for the movie, Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted on social media, No matter how hard a powerful ecosystem tries, it cannot keep the truth hidden in darkness forever. Released last week, the Vikrant Massey and Raashii Khanna-starrer movie is based on the 2002 Godhra train burning tragedy, in which 59 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from a ceremony in Ayodhya, died in a fire. This is the second movie within eight months to have been declared tax-free by the MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav. Prior to it, in March, the CM had declared Yami Gautam-starrer Article 370 tax-free in the central Indian state. Article 370 focused on the rise of terrorism in Kashmir and the governments fight against it, including the abrogation of Article 370 by the Narendra Modi government on August 5, 2019, ending the special status given toJammu and Kashmir. The government, however, didnt give a similar tax benefit to the Pankaj Tripathi-starrer movie Mai Atal Hoon , which was a biopic on former PM and BJP patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Importantly Vajpayees Indore-based niece Mala Tiwari had written to PM Narendra Modi in January, to make themovie Mai Atal Hoon tax-freefor infusing the spirit of nationalism among youths. Before it, in May 2023, then CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan had declared the Hindi movie, The Kerala Story tax-free and also watched the movie with the films cast and crew in Bhopal. In June 2022, Chouhan had declared Akshay Kumar-starrer Samrat Prithviraj tax-free, just two months after granting similar benefits to Anupam Kher-starrer, The Kashmir Files . But its not just BJP regimes that have declared movies tax-free in MP, as even the 15-months-old Kamal Nath-led Congress regime, had declared Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhapaak (based on the real-life struggle of an acid attack survivor) and Taapsee Pannu-starrer Thappad (which dealt with issue of domestic violence) tax-free in the state.

Vedic-era Bharadwaj, not Wright Brothers, conceptualised first aircraft: UP Governor
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Sunday inaugurated the 28th edition of International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad. Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel claimed Vedic-era sage Bharadwaj conceptualised the idea of an aircraft but said the credit for its invention has gone to the Wright Brothers. Addressing a convocation function at a university, Patel said students should study ancient Indian texts to appreciate the unparalleled research and discoveries made by their ancestors. The sages and scholars of ancient India made remarkable discoveries and innovations that are benefiting the world even today, she was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Raj Bhavan. Citing the example of Bharadwaj, the governor said, He had conceptualised the idea of an aircraft, but the credit for its invention was given to another nation, and it is now recognised as the invention of the Wright Brothers. She made the speech at the 9th convocation of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University in Lucknow on Monday. Bharadwaj, a prominent 'rishi' from the Vedic age, is mentioned in both the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. Orville and Wilbur Wright, together known as the Wright Brothers, are credited with flying the first self-propelled aircraft on December 17, 1903, in North Carolina, USA. However, some BJP leaders have argued that the concept of a flying machine is demonstrated in the Pushpak Vimana' described in the Ramayana. Interestingly, a research paper presented at the 102nd Indian Science Congress in 2015 claimed that Shivkar Bapuji Talpade had flown a flying machine over Chowpatty in 1895, eight years before the Wright Brothers. The paper also claimed that aeroplanes existed in India 7,000 years ago and were capable of travelling between countries and even planets. The paper, presented by a retired principal of a pilot training institute, attracted sharp criticism from some scientists who argued that it undermined the primacy of empirical evidence, which is the foundation of the 102-year-old Congress. At the convocation, Patel urged universities to encourage students to delve into ancient Indian texts to appreciate the unparalleled research and discoveries made by their ancestors, and described these texts as true treasure troves of wisdom. Referring to the Rampur Raza Library, she highlighted its priceless collection of ancient books and artwork, some of which remain vibrant to this day, the statement said. The colours used in these illustrations, derived from natural vegetation, have not deteriorated over time, Patel said. The governor also instructed universities to facilitate the study of these ancient texts and translate them into various languages to ensure this knowledge reaches a wider audience, the statement added. She remarked that India, the land of Buddha, has always chosen the path of peace over conflict, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is achieving new milestones in education and research. Patel further stated that with a population of 1.4 billion, India is being skilfully guided by the Prime Minister, whose policies have elevated the nation's stature on the global stage. The governor highlighted the substantial funds allocated for education in the current budget and urged universities to undertake projects in this direction and ensure that their benefits reach the students. She also noted that the universities of Uttar Pradesh are performing well in national and international rankings. The universities' placements in the NAAC and NIRF rankings show that even better results can be achieved with hard work, she added
