SC takes suo motu cognisance of row over definition of Aravalli range, hearing on Monday

NEW DELHI: Amidst the severe apprehension over the redefinition of Aravalli hills, the Supreme Court has on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the matter and decided to hear it on December 29, Monday. The matter is to be heard by a three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by the CJI Surya Kant and Justices J K Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih on December 29, Monday. The matter was listed as, Case | In Re: Definition of Aravalli Hills and Ranges and ancillary issues, in the top court for hearing on Monday. The apex court took the matter on suo motu basis, after major protest by the public, environmentalists, civil society members and others expressing their apprehensions about the revised definition of the Aravalli hills. They worried that the change may lead to indiscriminate illegal mining and impact groundwater level among others. Socio-environmental activist and lawyer Hitendra Gandhi wrote a letter to CJI Kant, seeking review of 100 Metre test rule pertaining to Aravalli issue. Gandhi also wrote a letter to the President of India in this regard. Low ridges, water recharge areas have to be protected. 100 Metre rule risks excluding large ecologically integral parts that may not meet numerical height threshold but remain functionally critical, the letter of Gandhi said. Rajasthan Dy CM accuses Congress of politicising Aravalli redefinition row as protests continue across state In its judgment on November this year, the bench led by the then Chief Justice BR Gavai (Now retired) accepted the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) committee's recommended operational definition for the Aravali Hills and Ranges in the context of mining. The Supreme Court had in its verdict emphasised that uncontrolled mining here poses a great threat to the ecology of the nation and directed uniform criteria to safeguard them. Their conservation is thus vital for ecological stability, cultural heritage, and sustainable development. The court had earlier directed the Centre to prepare a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining before any new mining activity is permitted in the ecologically fragile region. It is to be noted that Aravalli Hills are among Indias oldest geological formations, stretching from Delhi through Haryana, Rajasthan, and into Gujarat. Historically, they have been recognised across 37 districts by state governments, with their ecological role noted as a natural barrier against northern desertification and a protector of biodiversity and water recharge.

Protestors vandalise Christmas, New Year decorations in Ahmedabad mall

AHMEDABAD: Gujarats Ahmedabad City witnessed fresh tension over Christmas celebrations on Saturday after Hindu outfit workers allegedly vandalised Christmas decorations at a prominent mall on SG Highway, triggering police action. Members of a Hindu organisation staged a protest against Christmas celebrations at a mall near Thaltej on Ahmedabads SG Highway. According to police, four to five workers associated with the outfit suddenly entered the mall, headed straight for the central atrium, and pulled down the Christmas tree installed as part of Christmas and New Year decorations. The act, carried out in full public view, created panic among shoppers and forced mall security to rush in as the situation spiralled within minutes. The workers demanded that all Christmas trees and related decorations be removed immediately, a police official said, adding that mall authorities tried to calm the protesters and explain that the decorations were part of routine year-end festivities. Despite repeated requests, they vandalised the decorations, following which we were informed and reached the spot, the officer said. Assam marks 'anguished' Christmas celebration after VHP, Bajrang Dal activists vandalise school, shops; 4 arrested Police teams detained the workers on the spot to prevent further damage and to restore order, as security inside the mall was briefly tightened to manage the sudden rush and confusion. The incident comes against the backdrop of widespread Christmas and New Year decorations across the city, where malls and public spaces traditionally put up Christmas trees, Santa Claus figures and festive lighting between December 25 and December 31. What is usually seen as a commercial and seasonal celebration, however, has now become politically and socially charged. Just three days earlier, the Federation of Parents Associations, along with a saffron outfit, had protested against Christmas celebrations and holidays in schools. In a letter addressed to the state Education Minister and the District Education Officer, the federation demanded that Christmas holidays should not be granted and warned that schools celebrating Christmas could be forced to shut. The letter alleged that some schools were making Christmas celebrations mandatory before December 31 and involving children in activities such as dressing up as Santa Claus. No religious celebration should be imposed on students without prior consent of parents, the memorandum stated, claiming that such practices hurt cultural sentiments and were unnecessary, especially when, according to the federation, there was no justification for holidays during Christmas. This is the power of the organisation: Digvijaya Singh praises BJP-RSS, ignites controversy

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh has sparked a fresh political controversy after publicly praising the organisational strength of the BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS, remarks that come just a week after he flagged the need for internal reforms within the Congress to Rahul Gandhi. On Saturday morning, Singh shared a black-and-white photograph, supposedly from the 1990s showing a young Narendra Modi seated on the floor near BJP veteran L K Advani at a public event in Gujarat. The image, reportedly from the 1996 swearing-in ceremony of former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela, has long been cited as a visual marker of Modis rise within the BJP. Posting a screenshot sourced from Quora on X, the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister wrote that the photograph reflected how grassroots workers within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP could rise through the ranks to occupy the highest constitutional offices. This is the power of the organisation, he wrote, ending the post with Jai Siya Ram. The remarks immediately drew sharp reactions from the BJP, which used the post to target the Congress leadership. BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan said Singhs tweet had dropped a truth bomb exposing what he alleged was the Congresss autocratic and undemocratic internal functioning. Will Rahul Gandhi show courage and react to this shocking truth bomb? Kesavan asked in a post on X, claiming the tweet laid bare how the Congress was run in a 'dictatorial manner.' Within Congress circles, Singhs post has been widely seen as a message to the party high command. He tagged the official Congress handle along with party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, prompting speculation that the praise was intended to underline his call for organisational reform. On December 19, Singh had written an open post urging Rahul Gandhi to push for pragmatic decentralised functioning within the Congress, saying that while Gandhi was bang on on socio-economic issues, reforming the party organisation required greater openness. He had also remarked that it was not easy to convince Gandhi on internal changes. The BJP has repeatedly cited Singhs remarks to argue that the Congress preaches democracy externally while failing to practise it internally. Another BJP spokesperson, Pradip Bhandari, described Singhs post as evidence of open dissent, saying, Congress vs Congress is on display. Singhs statements also come at a politically sensitive moment for him in Madhya Pradesh. His second Rajya Sabha term ends early next year, and a third term appears uncertain amid stiff competition within the state unit. Leaders such as Kamal Nath and Meenakshi Natarajan are seen as frontrunners, while state Congress chief Jitu Patwari and legislature party leader Umang Singhar are considered opposed to Singhs leadership. Responding to the controversy, Singh sought to clarify his position, saying he had merely praised organisational discipline. I have always opposed the RSS and Prime Minister Modi. I remain against the policies of the RSS and Modi ji, he said, attempting to quell speculation of ideological softening.

A 2 Z from Kerala in 2025

AMMA For the first time in its three decades of existence, women assumed charge of Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), with Shwetha Menon and Cuckoo Parameswaran elected president and general secretary respectively. The leadership change followed the resignation of the 17-member executive committee, which included Mohanlal, in September last year after the release of the Hema Committee report. Brain-eating amoeba The brain-eating amoeba (Naegleria fowleri) claimed 45 lives in the state, according to the health department. Kerala witnessed a surge in the number of cases in August and September, raising serious concerns about public health surveillance. Chirakkal Dr Haris Chirakkal, head of the urology department, flagged a shortage of equipment at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital, triggering an internal probe. Following the revelation, Dr Haris was subjected to targeted attacks for criticising the government and slapped with a show-cause notice. The health department drew more fire when the portion of a building at Kottayam MCH collapsed, killing a woman and injuring two others. Dadasaheb for Mohanlal Actor Mohanlal was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Indian cinemas highest honour, making him the second Malayali to receive the recognition after filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. 'Empuraan' The Prithviraj-Mohanlal film 'L2: Empuraan' found itself in the eye of a storm following its April release after right-wing groups claimed that its riot scenes bore resemblance to the 2002 Gujarat violence. They forced the makers to carry out cuts, alleging anti-Hindu narrative. Fresh Cut controversy Kozhikode witnessed fierce protests against Fresh Cut Organic Products poultry-waste processing plant over air and water pollution, and foul odour. Tensions escalated in October following violent clashes between residents and police, which led to injuries to officers and cases being registered against leaders of the agitation. The issue triggered political involvement and regulatory scrutiny, including National Green Tribunal (NGT) intervention and disputes over the units licence. GOAT Kerala missed out on Lionel Messis GOAT India Tour primarily due to logistical issues, lack of FIFA-standard facilities, funding delays, bureaucratic hurdles, and disagreements between organisers and the Argentine Football Association, leading to cancellation of the planned November event and its replacement with a Hyderabad leg to cover the southern region. Honey M Varghese Honey M Varghese, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Ernakulam, hit the spotlight after presiding over the 2017 actor abduction and assault case and delivering the verdict in December. The judgment convicting six accused, and acquitting actor Dileep, the eighth accused, drew both praise and criticism. Invest Kerala The state government organised the Invest Kerala Global Summit on February 21 and 22, offering a platform for investors, multinational companies, and startups to explore investments. After 10 months, according to Industries Minister P Rajeeve, the state was able to attract investments worth `35,463 crore and 50,000 new job opportunities. Joblessness Unemployment in the state saw a spurt with the number of jobless youths in rural areas rising to 76 per thousand in 2023-24, from 65 in the previous year, way above the respective national average of 25 and 24. Kerala had the fourth-highest rural unemployment rate in both years, according to the Handbook of Statistics on Indian States. Over the past 10 years, Kerala recorded its highest rural unemployment rate 107 per thousand in 2014-15. Killer in the family In one of Keralas most macabre family murders of the year, 23-year-old Afan went on a killing spree in Venjaramoodu, murdering his grandmother, uncle, aunt, teenage brother, and girlfriend, while his mother survived with serious injuries. Police said he travelled between three crime scenes on a motorcycle before surrendering. He was hospitalised after claiming to have consumed rat poison, before attempting suicide in custody. 'Lokah' 'Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra', Mollywoods first female-led superhero film, was released in August. Starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and directed by Dominic Arun, it became the first Malayalam flick to enter the `300-crore club. Mob lynching Ramnarayan Baghel, a migrant worker from Chhattisgarh, was killed in a mob attack in Walayar, Palakkad. The crowd allegedly assaulted the 31-year-old while shouting Bangladeshi, triggering statewide outrage over hate crimes and migrant safety. Nimisha Priya The case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row in Yemen, saw major developments in the year. Her scheduled execution in July was postponed amid intense negotiations over blood money. Organ donation Organ donations in Kerala reached a five-year peak. Ernakulam General Hospital became Indias first district-level hospital to perform a heart transplant when woman from Nepal received the heart of Shibu, a Kollam resident. Polls The local body elections, widely seen as the semi-final ahead of the 2026 assembly polls, delivered a sharp political message. The UDF emerged as the biggest gainer, wresting control of four corporations. The BJP made headlines by capturing Thiruvananthapuram corporation, while the LDF was left with just Kozhikode corporation. The year also saw a by-election to the Nilambur assembly seat in June, where Congress Aryadan Shoukath defeated CPMs M Swaraj. Quality of national highways The national highway network in the state has been undergoing a major upgrade. However, cave-ins of under-construction stretches in Malappuram and Kollam exposed serious lapses and violations, raising questions about the quality of the work. Rahul Mamkootathil Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil courted controversy following sexual misconduct allegations and rape cases by multiple women. The party suspended the 36-year-old and followed it up with expulsion. Sabarimala The special investigation teams probe into the Sabarimala gold theft case exposed a nexus involving former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) officials. A total of 4.5 kg of gold went missing from the hill shrine following repair work in 2019. Former TDB officials, including A Padmakumar, N Vasu and Murari Babu, were arrested. Following new developments, the SIT expanded its investigation into other states. Transshipment terminal The Vizhinjam Transshipment Terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May, establishing it as Indias first deepwater hub. It achieved rapid operational success, handling 1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and major vessels like MSC Irina by the year-end, all while preparing for phase II expansion to extend berths and the breakwater for even greater capacity, solidifying its role as a global competitor to Colombo. Universities The year saw a standoff between the governor and the government over appointments of vice-chancellors to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology (Digital University Kerala, DUK). Following the deadlock, the apex court intervened, leading to the formation of a committee to recommend candidates. A consensus was arrived at and Dr Ciza Thomas (KTU) and Dr Saji Gopinathan (DUK) were appointed as VCs. Vedan Rapper Hirandas Murali aka Vedan was arrested in a narcotics case and later booked over sexual assault allegations. The governments decision to honour him with the state film award for best lyricist sparked debate. Wild animal attacks Wild animal attacks continued, with four people killed by tigers alone in 2025. From 2016 to early 2025, 919 persons have been killed and nearly 9,000 injured in encounters with wild animals. Kerala officially requested the Centre to amend the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The main goal is to allow the culling of wild animals that are a direct threat to people and property. Xtreme poverty eradication The state government declared Kerala as extreme poverty-free in November, through the Extreme Poverty Eradication Project (EPEP). The project identified 64,006 families as extremely poor. The announcement, however, sparked controversy, with the opposition questioning the lack of transparent and census-based data, and alleging political motivation. Year of Youth Youth emerged at the forefront of politics, particularly during the local body elections, with major parties fielding candidates from student wings such as KSU and SFI. Ajit Pawar out, Eknath Shinde in: BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in making for BMC polls

MUMBAI: Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the BJP is planning an alliance with deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena as the Thackeray brothers have joined forces. Sources said the BJP had prepared to contest all 227 seats on its own and regain power, but decided to negotiate a deal with Shiv Sena. Shiv Sena has been offered 78 seats, while the BJP will contest 140 seats; RPI (A) will be offered the seats from the BJPs quota. Our leadership in Delhi did not want to take any chance and risk because this decision may send the wrong message and alienate the Marathi voters who still influence over 150 seats in Mumbai. Therefore, the state BJP leadership was forced to compromise over seat sharing with Shiv Sena, said a senior BJP leader who requested anonymity. He added that Shiv Sena had earlier demanded an equal number of seats. Since Shiv Sena refused to budge, a final offer of 78 seats had been made to the party. We decided to contest 140 seats against the earlier plan of 150 seats in BMC, said the BJP leader. He added that keeping Shinde on board is a compulsion because of the alliance of the Thackeray brothers and their agenda of Marathi manoos. We are confident of the consolidation of the BJPs core vote of Gujaratis and Marwaris. The upper caste Marathi will vote, but we also need the lower caste Marathi ... We expect that Shinde will bring the sizeable numbers of Marathi voters with him. Shinde has already poached 80 former Shiv Sena corporators, many of whom have a good following in their respective wards, he added. Sources further said that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been asked to contest separately. Earlier, due to the hard stance of the Shiv Sena, the BJP wanted to keep an alliance with NCP. Since Shiv Sena on board, the BJP does not need the NCP anymore. Ajit Pawar was earlier asked to focus on minority-concentrated areas so that these votes do not shift towards the Congress and Uddhav Thackeray, the source said.

Congress intensifies campaign against Aravalli redefinition, Sachin Pilot joins NSUI protest in Jaipur

JAIPUR: Despite the Centre's assurance that no new mining leases will be granted in the Aravalli range, the political controversy over the protection of the ancient mountain system continues to intensify in Rajasthan. On Friday, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) organised a protest march in Jaipur as part of its campaign to save the Aravallis. The march was attended by Congress National General Secretary Sachin Pilot and NSUI state president Vinod Jakhar. Sachin Pilots son, Arhaan Pilot, also took part in the rally, marking his first appearance at a political protest. The Congress will continue its campaign on Saturday by holding a public awareness march in Alwar led by AICC General Secretary Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra, Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully, and AICC media coordinator Pawan Khera. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has also been consistently raising this critical issue on social media. Earlier, on Wednesday, a petition was submitted to the Presidents Secretariat in the name of President Droupadi Murmu opposing the definition that considers only hills with an elevation of 100 metres or more as part of the Aravalli mountain range. The petition demanded that the definition be revised on the basis of ecological and environmental considerations. The petition was filed by Charmesh Sharma, former director of the Rajasthan Seed Corporation and a Congress leader from Bundi, who has been vocal on Aravalli conservation. A complaint has also been filed with the National Human Rights Commission on the same issue. Row over Aravalli redefinition intensifies in Rajasthan even as Centre announces mining ban Congress sources say that while the party has staged protests on issues such as changes related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) and the National Herald case, they have not generated a widespread public response. In contrast, they claim there is huge public concern over the Supreme Courts decision related to the Aravalli range, with several social and environmental organisations openly expressing opposition. They argue that Rajasthan remains central to the issue, as nearly 90 percent of the Aravalli range passes through the state. According to departmental sources, the Aravalli hills extend over more than 50,000 square kilometres across 20 districts of Rajasthan. Of this, only about 8,000 to 10,000 square kilometres fall under areas with an elevation of 100 metres or more. Officials said the exact extent of the Aravalli range will be determined only after the preparation of the Master Plan for Sustainable Management (MPSM) by the Union Ministry of Environment. The Congress has indicated that protests may intensify in the coming days. Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra recently said the party is preparing a strategy to hold demonstrations at district, block, and state levels in 19 districts of the state. Political observers also suggest the party may consider coordinated movements in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi, where the Aravalli range extends. The issue has put the BJP on the defensive, with senior leaders largely avoiding detailed public responses. While Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has defended the governments position, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has assured that no harm will come to the Aravalli range. Opposition leaders, however, claim these assurances have yet to address public concerns.

Right-wing forces poisoning India through hate-mongering in garb of religion, says TMC's Abhishek

KOLKATA: TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday launched a scathing reproval of the ight-wing forces of the country, accusing them of deliberately poisoning India's climate through hate-mongering in the garb of religion. Banerjee tagged an archived video clip of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, flanked by then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, making a speech on the need of the ruling dispensation to observe aj dharma without discriminating against people on the basis of their irth, caste or creed. Banerjee's comments coincided with the day the body of the migrant worker from West Bengal's Murshidabad district Juel Sheikh, lynched in Odisha's Sambalpur on Wednesday, was brought back to his native village for final rites. Although the police in Odisha have said that the murder was not a targeted killing but a fallout of a personal dispute, a witness to the crime and a co-victim of the assault has alleged that the migrant workers from West Bengal were asked to prove their nationalities upon suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. India's climate is being deliberately poisoned. Right-wing forces, emboldened by power, are openly attacking Dalits, STs and minorities - through fear, lynching, threats and hate, all under the garb of religion, Banerjee wrote on X. When those in power are the perpetrators and reward the protectors of this violence, impunity becomes policy, he asserted. This is not governance; this is moral collapse. These attacks are unconstitutional, illegal and tear apart the very foundation of India -- our UNITY in DIVERSITY. Silence today is complicity. History will not forgive this, the TMC MP added in the post. In the attached video clip of Vajpayee with the current Prime Minister and former Gujarat CM Modi seated next to him, the former PM sends out a message to the ruling party to observe the moral duty of the ruler. I am trying to observe raj dharma. The king and the ruler cannot differentiate between his subjects, either on the basis of their birth, or their caste or creed, the ex-PM was heard saying. Banerjee has, in a sharply polarised political atmosphere of West Bengal, which is gearing up for its state polls scheduled be announced early next year, led the TMC's campaign against the BJP for allegedly targeting migrant workers from the state, who are Muslim and speak Bangla, by branding them Bangladeshi infiltrators across states ruled by the saffron party.

AHMEDABAD: After 33 years, Gujarat has officially reclaimed its 'Tiger State' identity as the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) confirmed the permanent presence of a tiger in Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary in Dahod district. Gujarat has quietly but decisively scripted a historic turnaround in Indias wildlife and political narrative, with the NTCA confirming the permanent presence of a tiger and restoring the states long-lost Tiger State status after more than three decades. The confirmation has transformed Gujarats identity overnight from being known solely as the land of the Asiatic lion to becoming Indias only state where lions, leopards and tigers coexist in the wild, a rare ecological convergence with both conservation significance and political symbolism. The breakthrough came from Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary, where a male tiger has not merely passed through but settled. Forest officials said the story began quietly in February, when the young tiger crossed into Gujarat from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. Instead of retreating, the animal stayed. After nearly ten months of continuous presence, backed by camera traps, repeated sightings and consistent movement patterns, the NTCA concluded that the tiger was not a transient visitor but a resident. Reacting to the development, Gujarat Forest and Environment Minister Arjunbhai Modhwadia struck a note of measured confidence. We have not yet received a formal letter from the NTCA, but the preliminary report prepared after a detailed study has confirmed the presence of a tiger in Ratanmahal and included Gujarat in the national tiger census. This is a matter of pride for every Gujarati, he said. Modhwadia also recalled Gujarats long ecological setback. Gujarat once had tigers. But in the 1989 census, only pugmarks were found and no cubs. In 1992, Gujarat was excluded from the tiger census and lost its Tiger State status, he said. He added that even a brief hope in 2019, when a tiger cub was spotted, ended within 15 days due to its death, underlining how fragile earlier revival attempts had been. This time, however, the evidence is stronger and undeniable. Modhwadia said the tiger was first camera-trapped on February 22, 2025, at 2.40 am. The very next morning, during routine patrolling in the Pipalgota Round of the Kanjeta Range, our staff noticed unusually large pugmarks, clearly bigger than a leopards. When we rechecked the camera data, the tigers image was confirmed, he said. Following this, the NTCA deputed a team to Gujarat to conduct a detailed habitat assessment. The findings went beyond confirming the tigers presence, concluding that Gujarats ecosystem is viable for sustaining tiger life and recommending measures to further strengthen it. That report became the basis for Gujarats inclusion in the 2026 All India Tiger Census, effectively restoring its Tiger State identity after three decades. Importantly, the state moved swiftly even before formal declarations. As soon as the tigers presence was confirmed, monitoring was intensified. Water sources were strengthened, security increased, fire-prevention measures enhanced and prey availability ensured, Modhwadia said, adding that camera traps across the region have been significantly expanded. Detailing the ecological groundwork, he said species such as wild boar, nilgai and monkeys already inhabit the sanctuary, while sambar and chital were released during the monsoon to reinforce the prey base. Our officers and frontline staff will receive special training in tiger conservation and breeding. We are also exploring the possibility of introducing female tigers to build a sustainable population, the minister added. All efforts are being made to eventually declare Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary a Tiger Reserve, Modhwadia added, signalling that Gujarats return to the tiger map is not symbolic but structural.

Over 100 Gujarati youths trapped in Myanmar, forced to involve in cybercrimes

AHMEDABAD: What began as a dream of well-paying foreign jobs has turned into a horrifying ordeal for more than 100 youths from Gujarat, who are now trapped in Myanmar after falling victim to an international cyber-scam racket. Lured by fake data-entry job offers promising easy work and attractive salaries, these young menmany from Vadodara districts Savli and Desar talukaswere sent abroad by agents posing as legitimate recruiters. However, soon after reaching Myanmar, the reality turned nightmarish. Instead of employment, they allegedly faced confinement, coercion, and were forced to participate in illegal cybercrime operations. According to the youths, they were made to work for 14 to 18 hours a day under threats and intimidation. Any attempt to resist reportedly invited severe consequences. Their plight came to light after a video appeal surfaced on social media, showing exhausted and frightened youths pleading with the Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs to rescue them. For nearly 20 days, the victims claim they have been hiding in hell-like conditions at a safe house operated by a local NGO in Myanmars Maya Wadi area. With almost no money, dying phone batteries, and limited access to help, hope is fast fading. One of the trapped youths, Kunjan Shah from Sandhasal village, shared his ordeal through a viral audio message. We were brought here in the name of jobs, he said, his voice trembling. But we were forced into illegal work for 14 to 18 hours daily. We escaped when we got a chance. Now we have no money, no phone balance, and no support. Fear escalated further after news emerged that the Ahmedabad Crime Branch had recently busted a Myanmar-based cybercrime racket. Realising they were likely entangled in the same criminal network, the youths fled the company, choosing uncertainty over captivity. Despite reports that Myanmar authorities have cleared their immigration status, the youths allege that no concrete assistance from Indian officials has reached them yet. Back in Gujarat, families are shattered. Kunjans parents, Jayeshbhai and Hansabhen, broke down while speaking to the media. They revealed that their son had travelled to Thailand and later Myanmar four months ago in search of a better future. We dont want money or compensation, they said tearfully. We just want our son and all the other children to come home safely. As anxiety spreads among families, political pressure is building. On December 26, Savli MLA Ketan Inamdar wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, urging immediate intervention. He also reached out to Vadodara MP Dr. Hemang Joshi for support. In his letter, the MLA stated that Kunjan Shah and around 10 youths from Desar taluka, along with nearly 100 Indians, are currently stranded in Myanmar after being cheated under false job schemes. This is not an isolated incident, Inamdar said. More than 100 Indian youths are suffering. Ten are from Vadodara district, and one is from my own village.

'No one family drove growth': PM Modi targets Congress with dynastic politics jibe

LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the countrys growth can no longer be attributed to just one family, launching a veiled attack on Congress first family and dynastic politics. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Rashtra Prerna Sthal on 101st birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi said the BJP government has freed the country from the tradition of eulogising a single family for all good that had happened. He said the BJP government is honouring and acknowledging the contributions of everyone irrespective of political affiliations. Congress and its allies politically kept the BJP untouchable. The BJPs values teach us to respect everyone. (Former PM) Narasimha Rao and (former President) Pranab Mukherjee were awarded Bharat Ratna. Our government honoured Mulayam Singh Yadav and Tarun Gogoi with national awards, he said, adding that no one could expect such recognition from the Congress or the SP. He said the NDA government is working on Dr BR Ambedkars principles and taking them to people through Panchteerthas. The PM claimed that while previous Congress and SP governments tried to erase the legacy of Baba Saheb, BJP drew pride in shattering the wall of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir by working towards realising his resolves. Modi referred to the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first deputy PM and Union home minister of independent India, who completed the daunting task of integrating various states with India. He claimed that Patel was not given the stature in history which he deserved. The Statue of Unity built in Gujarat now stands as a reminder of his great contributions, the PM said. Modi said the dynastic politics now faces insecurity. Consequently, the dynasts tend to cut the line of their contemporaries short to keep their relevance intact, he added. Praising CM Yogi Adityanath for giving good governance to UP, Modi said BJPs double-engine government has greatly benefited the state. UP is carving out its own distinct identity in 21st-century India. I am fortunate to be an MP from Uttar Pradesh. The hardworking people of UP are writing a new future. Today, UP is discussed for its development unlike earlier when it was known for poor law and order, the PM said. The grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and the Kashi Vishwanath Dham are creating a new global identity for UP. Places like Rashtra Prerna Sthal are also becoming part of this new identity. The PM said a missile used in the Operation Sindoor is now being manufactured in Lucknows defence corridor. He added that that the 30-acre site, where the Rashtra Prerna Sthal was developed, used to be a garbage dump for decades before being cleared in the last three years. Rashtra Prerna Sthal features 65-feet bronze statues of BJP icons Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyaya, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, symbolising their contributions to Indias political thought, nation-building, and public life. Yogi said the legacy of Mookerjee, Upadhyaya and Vajpayee is being carried forward by PM Modi to create a self-reliant and developed nation.

Firemen save man trapped mid-air on 10th floor after fall from Surat high-rise

AHMEDABAD: An early-morning rescue in Gujarats Surat saw firemen save a 57-year-old man who slipped from the 10th floor of a high-rise and remained suspended between the 8th and 10th floors for nearly an hour, turning a routine winter morning into a race against death. The incident occurred when a middle-aged man fell from the 10th floor of a residential tower in the Jahangirabad area and survived only because his body became wedged between the window grille and railing of the 8th floor, leaving him dangling helplessly in mid-air. The man, identified as Nitinbhai Adia, a resident of the Rander zone, was reportedly sleeping near the window of his 10th-floor flat when the accident occurred. In a split second, he slipped and plunged downward, but his fall was arrested when his leg became firmly trapped in the iron grille of the 8th floor. Eyewitnesses described the scene, with Nitinbhai hanging several floors above the ground, crying for help while struggling to keep himself steady. One wrong move and he could have slipped, a local resident said, recalling the panic that gripped the building. The fire control room swung into action as soon as the emergency call was received. Given the gravity of the situation, teams from three fire stations, Jahangirpura, Palanpur and Adajan, rushed to the spot. On arrival, the fire brigade launched a carefully planned, double-layer rescue operation. As a precautionary measure, personnel spread a safety net on the ground floor to prevent a fatal outcome in case of a fall. At the same time, other firemen accessed both the 10th and 8th floors to reach the trapped man from above and below. We treated it as a high-risk rescue, a fire officer said, explaining the strategy. First, we secured the victim with ropes and a safety belt from the 10th floor so that his body weight was supported. Only after that did we attempt to free his trapped leg. As Nitinbhais leg was tightly jammed in the metal grille of the 8th-floor window, firemen used hydraulic cutters and specialised tools to carefully cut through the iron bars, ensuring that vibrations or sudden movements did not worsen the situation. The rescue operation continued for nearly an hour amid pin-drop silence, as residents and passersby watched from below. After sustained effort and precise coordination, the fire team succeeded in freeing Nitinbhai and safely pulling him inside the building. As he was rescued, onlookers broke into applause, visibly shaken by how close the incident had come to ending in tragedy. Nitinbhai was immediately shifted to Gurukrupa Hospital in an108 ambulance for treatment. Doctors said his condition was stable, though he had suffered injuries to his leg. Fire officials later said timely information, swift coordination and disciplined execution helped save a precious life. Minutes matter in such cases, the officer said. Today, teamwork made the difference.

BJP MP accuses AAP MLA of Rs 75 lakh demand during PM programs, threatens to quit party

AHMEDABAD: A storm has erupted in Gujarats Narmada district after Bharuch BJP MP Mansukh Vasava accused AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava of demanding Rs 75 lakh during programmes linked to the Prime Minister, triggering a political clash that has drawn in the district collector and put the ruling BJP government under direct pressure. The controversy revolves around what began as coordination over a Prime Ministerial programme has escalated into allegations of extortion, administrative intimidation and threats of political rebellion. The dispute, which initially surfaced during coordination meetings, escalated after the BJP MP alleged that the AAP MLA had demanded and scattered Rs 75 lakh from officials of the Roads and Buildings Department during two major national-level programmes held in the district. The controversy deepened when Mansukh Vasava targeted not only the opposition MLA but also the district administration. Speaking to the media in an unusually aggressive tone, he said, I have a recording of the Rs 75 lakh demand, yet I fail to understand why the collector is suppressing the matter. The collector appears afraid of Chaitar Vasava. With this statement, the MP directly questioned the neutrality of the district collector, suggesting the administration was bending under political pressure. The BJP MP went a step further by issuing a dramatic ultimatum to his own party. I am fighting for the government and for honest officials. But if the government does not give me justice, I will leave the Bharatiya Janata Party. I cannot tolerate such wrong people, he said, sending shockwaves through BJP ranks in the tribal belt. According to Mansukh Vasava, the alleged demand surfaced twice during district coordination meetings, where Chaitar Vasava repeatedly sought details of expenditure related to the programmes. Even after officials presented the accounts, he continued to intimidate them and demanded Rs 75 lakh, the MP claimed, adding that he objected immediately and ensured no money was paid. The controversy took a sharper turn when BJP MP claimed that the district collector had earlier acknowledged the demand in the presence of the district BJP president. However, when Chaitar Vasava later met the collector seeking clarification, the collector reportedly denied that any such demand had been made. That sudden U-turn has left me furious, the MP said, accusing the administration of backtracking under pressure. Escalating the issue further, Mansukh Vasava said, This is not a small matter that can be brushed aside. If this continues in the media, the state government will have to decide who is right the collector, Chaitar Vasava or Mansukh Vasava. He insisted that both the collector and the state government must take a clear stand and warned that he would not allow the matter to fade. In one of his strongest remarks, the MP said, Chaitar Vasava is dominating the district collector, and the collector is sitting as if nothing has happened. I will place all facts before the government. If justice is denied to me, I will quit the BJP. He reiterated that his fight was not for personal gain but to protect officials and development works from what he described as wrong elements. Providing political context, Mansukh Vasava referred to an earlier press conference in which he had accused AAP leaders, without naming them, of acting like agents in tribal districts. They roam across the state, disrupt development works, demand inquiries in coordination meetings, and then harass officials and agencies, he alleged, claiming such tactics were leading to siphoning off lakhs of rupees meant for tribal development projects. As accusations continue to fly, the Narmada controversy has moved beyond a local dispute, placing the BJP government, district administration and AAP leadership under intense scrutiny and turning a Prime Ministerial programme into one of Gujarats most explosive political flashpoints.

WPL 2026: Ex-India Player Anagha Deshpande Joins Delhi Capitals As Assistant Coach

DY Patil Stadium: Ahead of the 2026 season of the Womens Premier League (WPL), former India cricketer Anagha Deshpande has joined three-time runners-up Delhi Capitals (DC) as an assistant coach. It is understood that Anaghas coaching duties will center around fielding and batting in the DC set-up. Yes, I am joining the Delhi Capitals. It was finalised a few days ago. Hundred percent, it's a great opportunity for me. I will get to learn a lot of things which will aid me in future. I have seen them try for winning a trophy for three years. I hope I can help them win the trophy this time, Anagha told IANS on Thursday. At DC, Anagha will link up with head coach Jonathan Batty. Her appointment comes after the exit of Lisa Keightley, who has joined Mumbai Indians as head coach, and Milap Mewada, who is now coaching Goas mens team in the ongoing domestic season. Anagha played 23 ODIs and eight T20Is for India from 2008 to 2014, and made 483 runs across both formats. As a wicketkeeper, she took 16 catches and effected 21 stumpings in white-ball cricket for India. She played for Maharashtra, Railways, Gujarat and Puducherry in the domestic cricket circuit. Anagha has enjoyed considerable success as a coach in Uttarakhand since retiring as a player. She led the state's U19 women's team to one-day trophy titles in 2021/22 and 2022/23, and guided the U23 side to entering knockout stages in T20 and one-day championships in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Under Anagha, Uttarakhand reached their first senior women's finals in both T20 and one-day formats in 2023/24. Players like Nandini Kashyap, Raghvi Bist and Prema Rawat, all of whom featured in this year's WPL and India A teams, attribute their growth to Anaghas coaching. She has also worked as a coach with many teams in senior and U19 womens challenger trophies, as well as served in various assignments at the zonal and national level for camps organised by the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). DC will open their 2026 WPL campaign on January 10 against defending champions Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. India batter Jemimah Rodrigues was recently named as DCs new captain, and Anagha backed the decision. I have seen her leadership. She is well deserving to be the captain. I have seen her lead Mumbai. The way her nature is in terms of leading a team, there is no need for a tag to say that she is a leader. She plays in the same way as a player and now that she has a leadership tag, she is hundred percent well deserving of it, she said. Meanwhile, IANS understands that former India captain Anju Jain is likely to take charge as DCs batting coach. Anju featured in eight Tests and 65 ODIs for India from 1993 to 2005, and amassed 2170 runs overall. Apart from hitting one century and three fifties in Tests, she claimed 15 catches and effected eight stumpings in the format, while contributing with 30 catches and 51 stumpings in ODIs. NEW DELHI: Six out of 10 people in India are suffering from mouth cancer due to frequent consumption of alcohol, along with chewing of smokeless tobacco products such as gutkha, khaini, paan, said a first large-scale study published on Wednesday. Authored by a team of researchers from the Center for Cancer Epidemiology, and Homi Bhabha National Institute, in Maharashtra, the study found that as little as under 2 gram a day of beer was associated with a heightened risk of buccal mucosa cancer (BMC), while 9 gram a day of alcohol - equivalent to around one standard drink - was associated with an approximately 50 per cent increased risk of mouth cancer. When combined with chewing tobacco, it is likely accounted for 62% of all such cases in the country. The findings, published in the journal BMJ Global Health, suggest that more than one in 10 cases (nearly 11.5%) of all buccal mucosa cancers in India are attributable to alcohol, rising to 14% in some of the states with a high prevalence of the disease, such as Meghalaya, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh. States like Arunachal Pradesh have reported the highest prevalence of alcohol consumption (26%), while states like Gujarat have reported very low alcohol consumption (4%). As of 2022, there were an estimated 4,00,000 new oral cancer cases globally. It is the second most common cancer in India, with an estimated 1,43,759 new cases and 79,979 deaths occurring each year in India alone. BMC is the predominant form of oral cancer in the Indian sub-continent, and despite its poor survival rate - 43% net fiveyear survival. This study shows that alcohol, even in low quantities, increases the risk for BMC. Prevention of consumption of tobacco and alcohol together could substantially reduce the incidence of BMC, the study said. For the study, researchers investigated the impact of alcohol consumption, including 11 internationally-recognised liquors and 30 locally-brewed liquor (LBLs) from different regions of India - Tharra, Desi, Mahua, Apong on the risk of BMC among Indian men. The researchers compared 1,803 people with confirmed buccal mucosa cancer and 1,903 randomly selected people free of the disease (controls) from five different study centres between 2010 and 2021. Most of the participants were aged between 35 and 54; nearly half (around 46%) of cases were among 25-to 45-year-olds. It found that compared with those who didnt drink alcohol, the risk was 68% higher for those who did, rising to 72% for those favouring internationally recognised alcohol, and to 87% for those opting for local drinks.

Hockey Star Hardik Singh Proposed For Khel Ratna; 24 Recommended For Arjuna Awards

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna: Two-time Olympic bronze medallist hockey player Hardik Singh has been recommended for the prestigeous Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the highest award for sportsperons given the government, while athletes Tejaswin Shankar, Priyanka, chess grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujarati and Divya Deshmukh, shooters Akhil Sheron and Mehuli Ghosh and women's badminton pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were among those recommended for the Arjuna Award by the committee set up by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Wednesday. The committee, which met in New Delhi on Wednesday, has recommended the 27-year-old midfielder, Hardik, for the prestigious award for his contributions to the Indian hockey team in the last two years. Hardik has played a key role in the Indian team winning bronze medals in the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games and was also a member of the Indian team that won gold in the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023 and the Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir. Born in Khusropur in Punjab, Hardik, who has been a mainstay of the Indian men's hockey team, has so far earned 166 caps with the national team and is employed with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). Six hockey players have been conferred the Khel Ratna so far - Dhanraj Pillay (1999-2000), Sardar Singh (2017), Rani Rampal (2020), PR Sreejesh (2021), Manpreet Singh (2021), and Harmanpreet Singh (2024). Sources said his was the only name recommended by the panel. What was surprising for many was that no member of the Indian women's cricket team, which made history by winning their maiden Women's ODI World Cup title last month, was considered by the panel. Interestingly, last year, Indian mens hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh received the Khel Ratna alongside two-time Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, chess prodigy Gukesh D, and para-athlete Praveen Kumar. The selection committee also recommended 24 sportspersons for the Arjuna Awards, including Aarti Pal, who became the first yogasana athlete to be recommended for the honour. Aarti is the reigning national and Asian champion in yogasana, which will feature as a demonstration sport at the Asian Games in Japan next year. Rifle shooter Mehuli Ghosh, gymnast Pranati Nayak, and India's top-ranked women's badminton pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are also among the recommendations. Polo star Padmanabh Singh, along with Sonam Malik (wrestling), Sutirtha Mukherjee (table tennis), Rudransh Khandelwal (para-shooting), Olympian rower Arvind Singh, and Ekta Bhyan (para-athletics), have also been recommended. Notably, no cricketer features among this years recommendations. Mohammed Shami was the last cricketer to receive the Arjuna Award in 2023. The committee did not suggest any names for the Dronacharya Award and the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Award. Vijay Hazare Trophy: Kohli, Rohit, Suryavanshi Smash Centuries; Karnataka And Bengal Complete Big Chases

Narendra Modi Stadium Ground: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, along with Ishan Kishan and Devdutt Padikkal, smashed centuries to benefit their respective teams in Round One of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26 Season on Wednesday. It was a day on which a record 22 individual centuries were scored on the opening day of the competition. From a team perspective, Karnataka and Bengal completed mammoth successful run chases to make a big statement on Day One of Indias premier domestic mens one-day tournament. Kohli marked his return to Bengaluru with a commanding century as Delhi chased down 299 against Andhra with more than 12 overs to spare in their Elite Group D opener on Wednesday. Kohli's 58th List A hundred - 131 off 101 balls with 14 fours and three sixes - at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground overshadowed Ricky Bhui's 122 for Andhra as Delhi secured a four-wicket victory. Delhi pacer Simarjeet Singh was adjudged Player of the Match for picking 5-54. Meanwhile, in Jaipur, another former India captain, Rohit Sharma, produced a masterclass in front of over 20,000 spectators at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, smashing an unbeaten 155 off 94 balls to guide Mumbai to an eight-wicket victory over Sikkim in Elite Group C. Rohit raced to his 37th List A century in just 62 balls before adding another 50 runs off 29 deliveries, cutting and driving at will against an inexperienced Sikkim attack that had posted 236/6, as Mumbai chased down the target in 30.3 overs. In Ranchi, Bihar posted a staggering 574/6 - now the highest score in men's List A cricket - as teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed 190 off 84 balls and captain Sakibul Gani blasted an unbeaten 128 off 40 balls - the fastest by an Indian batter in men's List A cricket - to crush Arunachal Pradesh by 397 runs in a Plate Group match on Wednesday. Suryavanshi struck 16 fours and 15 sixes in his blistering knock at a strike rate of 226.19, adding 158 runs for the opening wicket with Mangal Mahrour (33) before combining with Piyush Singh (77 off 66 balls) for a 103-run second-wicket partnership. Wicketkeeper Ayush Loharuka continued the carnage with 116 off 56 balls, including hitting 11 fours and eight sixes, before Gani unleashed mayhem in the final overs by hitting 10 fours and 12 sixes to propel Bihar past the 500-mark. Bihar's bowlers then completed the rout, dismissing Arunachal Pradesh for just 177 in 42.1 overs with Akash Raj (3-29), Suraj Kashyap (3-31) and Himanshu Tiwari (2-33) sharing eight wickets between themselves. In Rajkot, Dhruv Jurel and Rinku Singh hit half-centuries as Uttar Pradesh opened their campaign with an 84-run win over Hyderabad at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. Apart from the duo, Abhishek Goswami and Aryan Juyal were among their other half-centurions. UP's spin trio - List A debutants Zeeshan Ansari (4-31) and Prashant Veer (3-47), along with Vipraj Nigam - stifled Hyderabad's chase of 325 after the UP top-order posted 324/5. Hyderabad captain Tanmay Agarwal's 53 off 43 balls threatened briefly before the lower-order collapsed, as they were bowled out for 240. Defending champions Karnataka pulled off a stunning run chase, overhauling a record target of 413 against Jharkhand with 15 balls to spare at the Narendra Modi Stadium Ground B in Ahmedabad. Player of the Match Devdutt Padikkal's brilliantly-paced 147 off 118 balls eclipsed Ishan Kishan's explosive 125 off just 39 balls - the second fastest List A century by an Indian male batter - as Karnataka romped home despite losing five wickets on the way. Captain Mayank Agarwal (54 off 34 balls) and Padikkal added 114 in the first 11.5 overs before Abhinav Manohar (56 not out) and debutant Dhruv Prabhakar (40 not out) sealed Karnatakas victory with an unbroken 88-run stand off 41 balls. Kishan had earlier clubbed 14 sixes in his whirlwind knock, helping Jharkhand amass 151 runs in the final 10 overs to post 412 for nine. Meanwhile, at the main Narendra Modi Stadium, Tamil Nadu opened their campaign with a 101-run victory over Pondicherry, with Pradosh Ranjan Paul (73) and captain N. Jagadeesan (67) laying the foundation for a total of 310/9. Bengal completed a successful chase of 383 against Vidarbha, with Abishek Porel (56 off 35 balls), captain Abhimanyu Easwaran (71), Sudip Gharami (68), and Shahbaz Ahmed (71 off 58 balls) guiding them to a stunning victory. Shubham Khajuria smashed an unbeaten 129 as Jammu and Kashmir thrashed Chandigarh by 10 wickets, with Nasir Lone taking four wickets and recent IPL auction pick Auqib Nabi claiming two. Himachal Pradesh defeated Uttarakhand by 95 runs as Akash Vasisht took three wickets, while Arzan Nagwaswalla's four-wicket haul powered Gujarat to an eight-wicket victory over Services. Saurashtra successfully chased down a 346-run target against Odisha with five wickets in hand, powered by Gajjar Sammar's unbeaten 132. Odisha's Swastik Samal had earlier smashed 212 with Biplab Samantaray contributing 100. Kerala thrashed Tripura by 145 runs after posting 348 for eight, with Baba Aparajith taking 5-15. Vignesh Puthur created List A cricket history by taking six catches as a fielder - the most ever in an innings, surpassing the previous record of five shared by 21 fielders. Punjab defeated Maharashtra by 51 runs, with Naman Dhir's 97, Anmolpreet Singh's 85, and Prabhsimran Singh's 60 laying the foundation for their big win before debutants Sukhdeep Bajwa and Krish Bhagat claimed two wickets each. Thackerays have joined hands after 20 years, but many challenges loom on the road to the BMC

The Thackeray cousins Uddhav and Raj have formally announced an alliance for the BMC and other municipal corporation elections, but it is not an easy fight, given the BJP's strong network and well-oiled machinery. Here are the top five challenges in Mumbai for the Thackerays who have reunited after 20 years. Weakened network after party's division : Following the split in the Shiv Sena, the party's once strong network was divided between the two factions. Eknath Shinde aggressively poached several old and loyal Shiv Sainiks who played a key role in getting the voters to the booth and extending all local services. The positive side for the Thackerays is the last layer a set of Marathi voters who have remained loyal to them. Getting these loyal voters to the polling booths is a challenge before the Thackerays. Depleted resources against well-oiled machinery : Napoleon once said, an army marches on its stomach; in the same way, the party's foot soldiers and local leaders march on their coffers. Local leaders are only loyal if they get concrete benefits in terms of small contracts for road bridge construction, supplying various items food, medical supplies in hospitals, etc. As Uddhav was out of power for quite a long time, the leaders who used to thrive on BMC and its related contracts were deprived, so the majority of them left and either joined the BJP or the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The BJP, RSS, and Shinde Sena will work hard on the ground and make everyone happy with their resources, while the Thackerays will have to depend on their mega rallies. Divided Marathi voters against consolidated Gujarati, Marwari and North Indian voters : In Mumbai, there are more than 150 civic wards out of 227 where Marathi votes still make the difference between victory and defeat. In 2017, the BJP, for the first time, increased its tally from 35 to 82, while the united Shiv Sena tally decreased from 110 to 84 in the BMC elections. The BJP was earlier restricted to the Gujarati and Marwari-dominated western suburbs and some parts of South Mumbai, but in 2017, it increased its footprint in other areas as well. The BJP not only consolidated its core Gujarati, Marwari and North Indian vote bank, but massively poached Marathi votes as well. Now, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena will be a partner in this vote bank. But the silver lining for Uddhav Thackeray is that the over seven per cent vote share of the MNS will be with them in this crucial battle. Besides, the MNS cadre is very happy with the alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT), with the strong hope of coming back to power in the BMC. Marathi manoos agenda faces diminishing returns . Raj and Uddhav Thackeray will play on the emotions of voters by recalling the united Maharashtra movement, 106 Marathi martyrs and the role of Balasaheb Thackerays Sena in protecting the Marathi manoos during riots. If the Thackerays succeed in consolidating the Marathi manoos and are able to retain the minority votes, as most of them voted for Uddhav in the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, then they can give a tough fight to the BJP and Shindes Sena. But the problem is that the number of Marathi people who have an attachment to Balasaheb Thackeray and his speeches is dwindling. How much do the next generation listen to them to vote for the Sena on an emotional agenda? Many of them grew up with the BJPs Hindutva flavour and development work, like the metro network. Further, there will be a lot of allurements, so it is a tough task for the Thackerays to keep their votes intact. Shinde no more a pariah to Marathi voters : Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde is no more a pariah to Marathi voters. Uddhav and Raj Thackeray will indulge in Shinde bashing, claiming he stole the party and symbol, but how many people will buy this argument? Shinde is very well accepted among Marathi voters. Shindes Sena has won 53 Nagar Panchayats, second after the BJP that won 117, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena bagged only nine. The Shinde-led Sena won a majority of its posts in the Konkan region, which is the base of the Sena in Mumbai. Therefore, it is a big challenge for the Thackerays to offer the Marathi manoos something unique to get their votes.

Centre imposes 'complete ban' on new mining leases in Aravalli range amid row over redefinition

NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has issued directives to the states for a complete ban on granting any new mining leases in the Aravalli Range. This measure aims to protect the range from unregulated mining activities. The Ministry has also instructed the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) to identify additional areas or zones within the entire Aravalli Range where mining should be prohibited, beyond those currently restricted by the Centre, based on ecological, geological, and landscape-level considerations. Furthermore, the ICFRE has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive, science-based Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM) for the entire Aravalli region. The Centre has described the 'total ban' as a significant step towards the conservation and protection of the entire Aravalli Range, which stretches from Delhi to Gujarat by preventing illegal mining. This statement follows reports indicating that the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) contradicts recommendations from a government-headed committee regarding the definition of the Aravallis. The CEC was established by the Supreme Court in May 2002 and reconstituted in December 2023 to provide the Court with advice on environmental and forestry matters. Aravallis need care beyond mining rules Additionally, these reports claim that government institutions, such as the Forest Survey of India and the Supreme Court's own amicus curiae, opposed the new definition of the Aravallis. The controversy arose when the apex court accepted the recommendations of a committee chaired by the Environment Ministry Secretary, which included representatives from Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi, as well as technical experts. This committee proposed that any landform rising more than 100 meters above local relief should be treated as part of the Aravalli hills. The new definition exposes the Aravalli range to increased vulnerability from mining and other activities. It is reported that all states agreed to adopt this long-standing Rajasthan definition, along with additional safeguards to ensure it is objective and transparent. Why is govt pushing through 'fatally flawed' redefinition of Aravallis, asks Congress

Gujarat Giants Lack Indian Batting Reliability Despite Having A Balanced Squad, Says Chopra

IANS File Photo: Former India opener Aakash Chopra feels Gujarat Giants (GG) have assembled a well-rounded squad for their 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 campaign, but lack reliability in terms of Indian batting resources. Only one of Georgia Wareham or Kim Garth makes the XI. Gujarat Giants need batting firepower, which makes it tricky. Unlike Mumbai, Delhi, UP, or RCB - who boast 1-2 settled Indian stars in their top 4-5 - GG lacks that reliability, Chopra said on JioStar. Yastika Bhatia returns from injury, not a lock ahead of Richa Ghosh, leaving her isolated. Bharti Fulmali follows, so the lineup feels thin. Kim Garth sits out; Georgia Wareham plays to shore up batting, or it crumbles, he added. The WPL 2026 season runs from January 9 to February 5, and former India batter Veda Krishnamurthy felt the side did well to assemble a balanced squad at the auction table last month in New Delhi. Gujarat Giants are strong with Beth Mooney at the top, who scored heavily, and Ash Gardner excelled as captain at number four last year. They just needed the right combination with Sophie Devine, providing flexibility. Plenty of bowling options and experience with Renuka Singh Thakur taking the new ball. They stayed quiet for 70% of the auction, waited patiently, then secured key players - resulting in a well-balanced squad, she said. Multi-crore worth non-agricultural land scam rattles Gujarats bureaucracy, ED raids top officials' residences

AHMEDABAD: A multi-crore land scam (non-agricultural) has rattled Gujarats bureaucracy after the Enforcement Directorate raided top officials homes in Surendranagar, arrested a Deputy Mamlatdar with Rs 67.50 lakh cash and seized over 100 sensitive files. The ED raid has exposed a deep-rooted nexus of middlemen, speed money, and misuse of power. Gujarats administrative corridors shook on December 23 when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stormed into Surendranagar, launching coordinated raids at the residence of the District Collector and other senior officials in connection with a massive land NA (non-agricultural) scam running into crores. As the dust settled on the searches, the spotlight narrowed sharply on Deputy Mamlatdar Chandrasinh Mori, who was taken into custody by the ED, turning the investigation from suspicion to arrest within hours. On December 24, the ED produced Mori before the Special Court at Ahmedabad Rural Court, seeking a 14-day remand to unravel what officials described as a well-oiled corruption machinery operating inside the Collectors office. After hearing arguments, the court granted remand till January 1. The remand application highlights crucial findings of the probe. A. Bribes were systematically demanded and collected as speed money for processing applications without delay. B. The bribe amount was pre-fixed and calculated on a per square metre basis, depending on the nature of the application. C. Payments were routed through identified intermediaries, commission agents and dalals, whose names, roles and contact details were recorded by him. According to ED officials, the arrest followed the recovery of Rs 67.50 lakh in cash from Moris residence, money that investigators believe is directly linked to illegal gratification in land NA approvals. The cash recovery is a crucial piece of evidence. It points towards systematic extortion and abuse of official position, an ED officer said. The ED has also registered a fresh complaint and formally became the complainant in an ACB case, indicating that more arrests and wider action may follow. This is not an isolated act. The probe clearly indicates the involvement of multiple officials and agents, the officer added. During the raids, investigators stumbled upon another startling detail: the Surendranagar District Collector allegedly used to take official files home. As many as 100 government files were seized from the Collectors bungalow, pulling the senior-most officer of the district under a cloud of suspicion. ED sources said the seized files are now being examined to trace irregular NA approvals and undue benefits. The EDs investigation has peeled back layers of a deeply entrenched racket. Land NA permissions under CLU (Change of Land Use) applications were allegedly being processed through a network of middlemen and agents. Applicants willing to pay speed money saw their files cleared swiftly, while others waited endlessly. Deputy Mamlatdar Mori, who held key powers related to land NA, is accused of misusing his authority. Investigators revealed that bribe amounts were fixed based on the size of land per square meter, collected through intermediaries, and routed to officials in a planned and systematic manner. This was organised corruption, not random bribery, an ED official stated. As the enforcement net tightened, the defence pushed back. Advocate Nitin Gandhi, appearing for Mori, raised serious objections in court. He claimed that during the raid, the search warrant was not properly acknowledged and that the recovery panchnama did not clearly mention the specific case under which the ED searched. Gandhi further questioned the legality of Moris detention, stating that he was detained at 11:45 pm and produced before the court only at 11 am the next day. Why was he brought before the court after such a gap is a serious issue. The source of the alleged 67 lakh must also be examined independently, the lawyer argued, adding that it remains to be seen whether any names of other officials were extracted under pressure. Despite the defences arguments, the court granted ED custody till 5 pm on January 1, giving investigators time to confront the accused with documents, seized cash, and digital trails. Meanwhile, the revelations have sent shockwaves through Surendranagars Collectorate, with discussions rife about how deep the scam runs, who all benefited, and whether more senior officials will soon face the knock of the ED.

In a remarkable feat, Gujarat crosses five lakh rooftop solar system installations mark

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat has scripted a major renewable energy milestone by installing more than five lakh rooftop solar systems, generating a combined capacity of 1,879 megawatts, firmly placing the State at the forefront of Indias clean energy transition. Achieved under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojna, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the feat reinforces Gujarats dominance in rooftop solar adoption and will take centre stage at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Renewable Conference (VGRC) in Rajkot. The achievement doesnt stand alone. Gujarat has so far installed over 11 lakh rooftop solar systems cumulatively across schemes, a figure that underlines the states long-term, policy-driven push towards renewable energy leadership. From vision to execution, Gujarat continues to set the national benchmark. This surge reflects the Prime Ministers renewable energy roadmap and the hands-on governance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, whose citizen-centric policies have converted solar power from an ambition into a household reality. SCCL to set up solar, thermal power plants in Rajasthan As a result, Gujarat today retains the No. 1 position in rooftop solar installations in India. Significantly, the State has already achieved 50 per cent of its target of 10 lakh residential rooftop solar installations, a goal set for March 2027, marking a decisive halfway milestone in its clean energy journey. Financial accessibility has played a crucial role, with residential consumers availing Rs 3,778 crore in subsidies, easing the cost burden and accelerating adoption. To remove procedural hurdles, the Gujarat government rolled out a series of consumer-friendly reforms.
