NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said that attacking tall leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru cannot divert attention from the real issues. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the 150th anniversary of the national song, Kharge added that the purpose of the House must be to focus on the burning issues facing the nation, because the true tribute to Bharat Mata will be paid only when the Parliament debates the concerns of the people and their solutions. Kharge countered Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charges that Nehru removed four stanzas from 'Vande Mataram' to appease the Muslim League and its leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah by reminding the BJP that it was their founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee who had formed a government in alliance with the Muslim League in Bengal and not Nehru. He noted that the decision to adopt only the first two stanzas of the national song was taken in the Congress Working Committee meeting held in 1937. He said, those present in the meeting that approved only the first two stanzas as the national song, included besides Pandit Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Abul Kalam Azad, Acharya Kripalani, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Dr Rajendra Prasad, GB Pant and others. Why target Pandit Nehru selectively? he asked, pointing out, it was a collective decision of all these leaders. On real issues faced by the people of the country, he specially referred to the falling value of rupee against the US dollar and reminded PM Modi what he had said on the same issue as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2012. He quoted Modi as having alleged that it was due to the corruption that the value of rupee had fallen. Is it because of the same reasons that the value of rupee has fallen today, as you had attributed to its fall then? he asked. It is like a Himalayan fall, the way the rupee's value has fallen, he remarked. Kharge also referred to the foreign policy disaster during the NDA regime, pointing out how the neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh, which were traditional allies, had grown too distant from India. He said, Nepal was coming closer to China and Bangladesh, for the first time since 1971, was moving closer to Pakistan. He said China was expanding its influence in South Asia at the cost of Indias interests and influence. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Modis claims of possessing a 56-inch chest, he asked, what is the point of having such a broad chest when you cannot defend the country's interest and cannot stand up to Chinese bullying? He referred to aggressive expansionist claims of China over Arunachal Pradesh, pointing out how a woman from the state had been detained for 18 hours at a Chinese airport and was told that her Indian passport was illegal and she should apply for a Chinese passport. Kharge concluded his speech by urging the government to stop spreading falsehoods and slinging mud at national heroes to cover up its own failures. He said that whenever BJP leaders insult those who sacrificed everything for Indias freedom, it only becomes clearer that they and their ideological forefathers had no role in the countrys independence. He advised the government not to make a mockery of itself by questioning the wisdom of the heroes of the freedom struggle.

Gujarat removes 22.68 lakh workers from MGNREGA records
AHMEDABAD: Fresh official data tabled in Lok Sabha on 9th December paints an alarming picture of mass deletions under MGNREGA in Gujarat. From 2019-20 to 2024-25, over 7.49 lakh job cards were deleted, and nearly 22.68 lakh workers were removed from job cards, raising serious questions on transparency, eligibility checks, and the future of rural livelihood support in the state. A new data disclosure in Lok Sabha on Tuesday has opened a sharp debate on transparency and accountability in Gujarats implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA). The Union Ministry of Rural Development has reported a massive and accelerating deletion trend, which is reshaping the ground reality of rural employment in the state. The numbers tell a stark story. Gujarat has seen a year-on-year rise in deletion of job cards, beginning with 40,314 deletions in 2019-20, jumping to 1,31,080 in 2020-21, dipping slightly to 40,289 in 2021-22, only to spike again with 1,46,141 deletions in 2022-23. The situation intensified dramatically in 2023-24, where deletions ballooned to 3,38,533 job cards the highest in five years. Even in the ongoing financial year 2024-25, the deletion trend continues with 53,616 job cards already removed, signalling the process is far from slowing. But job cards arent the only concern worker deletion data is even more staggering. Between 2019-20 and 2023-24, Gujarat removed workers linked to job cards at an unprecedented scale: In 2019-20, Gujarat removed 1,54,654 workers from the MGNREGA registry a baseline that almost tripled the following year with 4,35,435 deletions in 2020-21. The trend briefly dipped in 2021-22, recording 1,43,195 removals, only to surge again in subsequent years. By 2022-23, deletions jumped dramatically to 5,59,478, marking a significant expansion in exclusion from the programme. The sharpest rise came in 2023-24, when the number nearly doubled again, reaching 9,75,994 deleted workers the highest point in the five-year dataset. This means worker deletions increased over six times between 2019-20 and 2023-24, creating a pattern that demands deeper scrutiny. Even in a shorter review span between October 10, 2025, and November 14, 2025, Gujarat deleted 5,433 workers, proving that the purge continues. The Central government attempted to justify the deletions, stating they were based on reasons such as fake or duplicate entries, incorrect registration, migration, gram panchayats reclassified as urban, or cases where the sole member listed on the job card had died. Officials further insisted that states must ensure that no eligible or deserving household is excluded, and must follow strict Standard Operating Procedures before deleting any job card or worker record. However, the wider national picture raises more questions than answers. The government admitted that, between 2019-20 and 2024-25, states across India deleted 4.57 crore (457.97 lakh) job cards, even as 6.54 crore (654.22 lakh) new job cards were issued during the same period. This wide replacement pattern suggests either large-scale system corrections or equally large-scale instability in the database and beneficiary continuity. Together, these numbers create a narrative that is both revealing and unsettling. The data indicates a churn rather than a stable beneficiary system, prompting concerns over whether genuine workers are losing access to guaranteed employment a constitutional rural safety net meant to support the most vulnerable.

STAGE, the OTT platform built for India's regional language audiences, has completed a INR 4.2 crore secondary transaction that allowed early employees and angel investors to partially exit their holdings. The transaction was facilitated by Hissa Fund, which specializes in providing liquidity to startup employees before traditional exit events. STAGE in partnership with HISSA Fund completes INR 4.2 Crore liquidity event - 8 early employees cash out ESOPs after 6-year bet on regional content Six years, from zero to six million For the eight employees who participated, this wasn't a routine financial event. Several joined STAGE when the idea of building a premium OTT platform for Haryanvi, Rajasthani, and Bhojpuri content seemed like a moon shot. Junaid and Kunal, both founding team members who have been with STAGE since day one. They are among those who sold a portion of their vested ESOPs. " I used the money to pay off my home loan ," says Junaid . "In the Indian context, fully owning the house where your family sleeps means something. Six years ago, I took a risk when I decided to back my founders. Today, that bet has paid for my home ." Kunal's first move was simpler: " I gave it to my mother ,” he said. " Watching her face when she saw the amount credited, I'll remember this moment for a long time ." Rohit Deshmukh (Product Manager at STAGE) saw the buyback as proof of something he'd sensed when he joined. " I've worked at places where 'ownership culture' is a slide in an all-hands deck. Here, I got ESOPs on day one. Now I've cashed a portion of them out. That's the difference between talking about ownership and actually doing it. " Why this matters STAGE has grown to over 6 million+ paying subscribers, making it one of India's largest regional language OTT platforms. The company is preparing to launch in two additional markets like Marathi & Gujarati in 2026. " As a founder, this is one of the most satisfying milestones ," says Vinay Singhal, Co-Founder of STAGE . " The people who believed in us when we had nothing now have something real to show for it. That's how it should work ." For Satish Mugulavalli, Managing Partner at Hissa Fund, STAGE represents a broader shift. " Early employees at high-growth companies often wait years for any liquidity. We are proud to help STAGE's team realize returns while the company is still scaling ." About STAGE STAGE is India's leading hyperlocal entertainment OTT platform, offering original web series, films, micro-dramas and entertainment in Haryanvi, Rajasthani, and Bhojpuri. The platform serves audiences who want premium content in their own dialects. About Hissa Fund The Hissa Fund I is a $35 million effort to solve an overlooked but important problem; Employees in growth stage startups are sitting on nearly $3 billion of ESOP value they can’t actually monetise. We’re the first fund designed to change that. By purchasing shares representing exercised options, we help them turn years of hard work into real liquidity. Thereby, we also help the startups to maximise the value of the grants they make.

'Characterless people in politics': Gujarat BJP MLA Varmora's remark triggers controversy
AHMEDABAD: BJP MLA Prakash Varmora in a recent video remarked that characterless, alcohol-drinking and gambling people are entering politics, giving Congress a new opportunity to target the ruling BJP amid the ongoing liquor ban debate and internal dissatisfaction. The video, which surfaced from a recent religious event in Dhrangadhra, shows Varmora declaring that public trust has weakened due to such elements infiltrating the political system. In the circulating video, BJP MLA Prakash Varmora is heard saying, Somewhere in our politics, people without character, those who drink alcohol and gamble, have entered. He further says, Somewhere, the peoples faith in these four pillars has been shaken. Many political observers are linking the outburst to Varmoras exclusion from the Gujarat cabinet during the last reshuffle a move believed to have triggered simmering resentment beneath the surface. Sensing opportunity, Congress launched an immediate attack. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi aggressively responded, claiming that the MLA had merely exposed the truth festering inside the BJP. In his strongly worded statement, Doshi said several BJP leaders themselves have acknowledged alcohol consumption, illegal activities and corruption within the party structure. Doshi went further, drawing parallels between Varmoras remarks and earlier statements by senior political figures. He pointed out that a former Union Minister from Bharuch had already spoken about looting within the BJP, while even Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel had objected to talks of lifting Gujarats liquor ban. According to Congress, these repeated statements are not isolated expressions they are cracks in the ruling partys moral stance. Doshi alleged that illegal liquor trade, bribes and corruption worth crores are running the system, while Gujarats youth continue to suffer under addiction and unchecked illegal liquor networks. Congress has intensified statewide protests and public outrage rallies over the liquor issue, claiming that members from within the ruling camp have now started acknowledging the illegal liquor nexus. Doshi ended his criticism with a sharp demand the BJP government must take corrective action and protect Gujarat and Gujaratis from systemic looting.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Baroda wicketkeeper-batter Amit Passi has equalled the world record for the highest score on T20 debut with his 44-ball century in their last league stage match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy here on Monday. The 26-year-old scored 114 runs off just 55 balls, featuring 10 fours and nine sixes, to guide Baroda to a 13-run win over Services. His innings matched Pakistans Bilal Asif, who scored 114 from 48 balls for the Sialkot Stallions in a domestic T20 match in Faisalabad in May 2015, tying the world record for the highest individual score in mens T20 debut. Passi has become only the third Indian batter after Punjabs Shivam Bhambri and Hyderabads Akshath Reddy to score a century on T20 debut, with all three hundreds coming in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Stepping in for India wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma, who left for national duty against South Africa, the 26-year-old Passi opened the innings and played a blistering knock against Services. He formed two vital stands: a 60-run partnership for the third wicket with Shivalik Sharma, followed by a quick 75-run alliance with captain Vishnu Solanki in just 32 balls, and played an essential role in guiding his team to a total of 220/5 in 20 overs. Multilingualism is Indias strength: Writers debate single-language idea
BENGALURU: In a compelling panel discussion titled Should a country speak a single language?, Indian literary critic GN Devy and writertranslator Deepa Bhasthi, in conversation with moderator Samanth Subramanian, argued that multilingualism is not just Indias reality but one of its greatest strengths. Drawing on personal experiences, the speakers highlighted the richness of Indias linguistic landscape. One panellist described growing up speaking Kannada, Kodava and Tulu, and later learning Hindi and English through the three-language policy. Knowing multiple languages enriches your inner life, they said, adding that speaking Kannada evokes a different persona than speaking English. Devy spoke about his upbringing with unlicensed versions of Gujarati, Marathi and Hindi, and later learning English, only to encounter dialectal variations in Yorkshire. His work with Adivasi communities exposed him to 12 tribal languagesmany neglected by official policywhich deepened his commitment to preserving non-standard languages. The discussion underscored that Indias multilingual foundationformally recognised with 14 languages by the Constituent Assemblyhas enabled unity despite vast diversity. The first census after linguistic reorganisation recorded 1,652 mother tongues, reflecting the publics strong attachment to their languages. Devy cautioned against monolingual imposition, comparing Indias multilingualism to Gandhis walking stick: inclusive and civil, rather than a tool of domination. Bhasthi emphasised that translation carries more than wordsembedding culture, memory and worldview. She cited a Kannada proverb translated as the distant mountain is smooth, illustrating how cultural meaning is preserved without literalism.

Speaking at the foundation ceremony for a Maharana Pratap statue near Mathpuri Mataji temple, Patel directly challenged Navsari district BJP president Bhuralal Shah, stating, You handle Navsari, we will see our Vijalpore. He warned Shah would not be allowed entry after the statues installation and mocked earlier disputes over naming. Patels repeated public outbursts have caused frustration within BJP leadership, who often dismiss him as careless. The party is considering disciplinary action against him. Furore as shoe hurled at AAP MLA Gopal Italia Tensions boiled over during the AAPs Gujarat Jodo Yatra in Jamnagar when a shoe was hurled at AAP MLA Gopal Italia while he was addressing a crowd. The attacker, identified as Chhatrapal Singh Jadeja, stood near the stage and threw the shoe, causing chaos and prompting the crowd to shout slogans. The event was cut short amid the disorder. Jadeja was detained and hospitalised following the incident. In a video confession, he claimed the attack was revenge for Italia allegedly throwing a shoe at former minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja years ago. AAP leaders have accused Congress of involvement, while police continue their probe. Holi festival: State board reschedules examination The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board has rectified its earlier mistake of scheduling a board exam on the Holi public holiday. The Class 10 Social Science exam, initially set for March 4, will now be held on March 18. This change follows concerns from students and parents about having an exam on the festival of colours. It is not the first scheduling error by the board; last year, a paper was planned for Cheti Chand but was rescheduled after objections. The boards latest adjustment aims to avoid disruptions during Holi and reduce student stress, ensuring exams do not clash with important festivals. Inside Indias white revolution 2.0: Shahs big bet on circular dairy economy
AHMEDABAD: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated Banas Dairy's Bio-CNG and Fertilizer Plant in Banaskantha. He also laid the foundation stone for a new milk powder and baby food facility. Shah said the circular economy model will boost dairy farmers income by 20% within five years, marking what he called a decisive step toward White Revolution 2.0. Amit Shah is on a three-day tour of Gujarat. With the inauguration of Banas Dairys state-of-the-art Bio-CNG and Fertilizer Plant at Agthala and the foundation stone laid for a 150-TPD milk powder and baby food unit in Sanadar, Shah signaled that Gujarat is prepared to lead India into what he termed a new era of circular economy-driven rural prosperity. Shah began his address with a claim that the income of livestock farmers will rise by more than 20 percent in the next five years. Connecting his announcement to a larger national strategy, Shah said the model being built in Banaskantha would not remain local for long. A concrete plan for implementing this model nationwide will emerge today, he declared, confirming that Members of Parliament had joined him specifically to study Banas Dairys framework. Shah invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modis mantra Prosperity through Cooperationdeclaring that cooperative institutions are becoming the backbone of India's rural development ecosystem. Banas Dairy is not just Gujarats pride; it has become Asias cooperative model, he asserted, lauding its 24,000-crore turnover. Shah sharply underlined the shift from traditional dairy economics to a value-added, waste-to-wealth model: Now farmers will earn not only from milk but also from cow dung. This project is a step toward making kanchan from kachra turning waste into wealth, Shah said. Calling the project a textbook example of the circular economy, Shah explained how cattle dung will generate Bio-CNG while the residue will be processed into organic fertilizer reducing dependency on chemical alternatives, improving soil health and directly lowering input cost for farmers. He urged farmers to switch to natural farming, arguing it would enrich soil quality and public health, and provide affordable fertilizer through the new plant. Turning his focus to future value expansion, Shah said India must now think beyond paneer and curd. There are products in global demand that India still doesnt make. If we produce them, our farmers will earn even more, he said pointing to the upcoming baby food and milk powder plant as the first step in diversification. In a political masterstroke aimed at both stakeholders and skeptics, Shah revealed that chairpersons and managing directors of major cooperative dairies across India will visit Banas Dairy in January 2026 to learn from its model, ensuring Gujarats template becomes Indias cooperative blueprint. Shah also highlighted a newer dimension of the circular model including processing hides from naturally deceased cattle for leather suggesting that every component of the livestock chain will eventually generate revenue under the White Revolution 2.0 framework. Shah acknowledged women dairy farmers, crediting them for transforming Banaskanthas dairy economy without protest or agitation. Women here sent a message to the world that empowerment is not slogans but systems. You worked, earned, and ensured income goes directly to your bank accounts, he said.
