Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group: Wicketkeeper K.L. Shrijith and leg-spin bowling all-rounder Shreyas Gopal shared a match-winning 116-run partnership for the fifth wicket as defending champions Karnataka chased down 289 to beat Tamil Nadu by six wickets with 17 balls remaining in their Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group A encounter at the Gujarat College Stadium on Monday. Karnataka appeared in trouble at 136/4, especially with captain Mayank Agarwal making 58, before Shrijith, who made 77, and Gopal, who scored 55, combined to rescue their side with smart running between the wickets and clinical punishment of loose deliveries. After both fell in quick succession, Abhinav Manohar remained unbeaten on 20 while Vidyadhar Patil contributed 17 not out to guide Karnataka home with a flurry of boundaries. The victory extended Karnataka's winning streak to three matches in the tournament. Previously, Tamil Nadu captain N. Jagadeesan played a fluent 65 while Pradosh Ranjan Paul's 57 and R. Sai Kishore's 38 provided some late impetus, but Abhilash Shetty's incisive bowling led the way for Karnataka to bowl out Tamil Nadu for 288. In another Group C match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Madhya Pradesh secured their second consecutive victory by dismissing Kerala for 167 and win by 45 runs. Himanshu Mantri top-scored with 93 off 105 balls, sharing a crucial 66-run ninth-wicket stand with Tripuresh Singh, who made 37. On a turning wicket, Kerala's batting collapsed against Madhya Pradesh's spin attack. Shubham Sharma claimed 3-16, while Shivag Kumar and Saransh Jain took two wickets each. N.M. Sharafuddeen's aggressive 42 coming at the back end of the innings reduced the margin of defeat for Kerala. Brief Scores: Tamil Nadu 288 in 49.5 overs (N. Amit Shah vows to drive out infiltrators across India; accuses Congress of backing illegal migration

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday slammed the Congress for allegedly encouraging infiltration and announced that the BJP would drive out the infiltrators not just from Assam but from across the country. Addressing a crowd after inaugurating the Rs 227-crore redeveloped Batadrava Than, the birthplace of 15th-16th century Vaishnavite saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva in Assams Nagaon district, Shah declared, I want to say it from this sacred land that the BJPs resolve is to drive out every single infiltrator (illegal immigrant), not just from Assam but from across the country. He appealed to the people of Assam to re-elect the BJP, committing that it would rid the election-bound state of the illegal immigrants within five years. He said the illegal immigrants were a big threat for national security and Assams culture. He commended Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government for evicting the Bangladeshi infiltrators from Batadrava Than areas. He said an estimated 1.29 lakh bighas of land in the state had been rid of the infiltrators through eviction drives. The infiltrators had grabbed land at the famous Kaziranga National Park but the Assam government under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma drove them out, Shah said. He alleged that the Congress had encouraged illegal migration to strengthen its vote-bank, but this affected Assams culture and literature. When it was a matter of saving Assams culture, the Congress had in 1983 come up with the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act to help the infiltrators settle here legally, the Home Minister said. Asserting that the last 10 years under BJP has been a golden period for Assams development, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Assam 36 times in the last 11 years, compared to seven times by his predecessor Manmohan Singh in 10 years, despite representing the state in the Rajya Sabha for 12 years. On two of those occasions, he had come to cast his vote, Shah said. He took note of Assams march to development, saying that the state was once known as the land of problems in Delhi but industrialists that he met in Gujarat on Sunday told him that it was now contributing to the countrys development by becoming the Northeasts growth engine. For years, Assam saw various kinds of agitations. Youths were armed with AK 47 rifles and there was bloodshed. The central government under Modi Ji signed five peace accords. Around 92% of their clauses have been implemented. We will ensure 100% implementation if BJP is elected to power again (in Assam), Shah said.

Pharma company making illegal psychotropic drugs busted in Rajasthan, three arrested

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has busted a major interstate narcotics racket in Rajasthans Bhiwadi, seizing 22 kg of illegal substances and arresting three key accused, marking the second big drug crackdown in a single month. The trail of the investigation led straight into a pharmaceutical factory hiding a narcotics assembly line in the neighbouring state. What looked like a routine industrial unit in Bhiwadis Rocco Eyal area was, in reality, a covert hub manufacturing banned psychotropic drugs for the black market. The operation began quietly, with a tip-off that the company APL Pharma was illegally producing drugs like Azazolam and feeding the supply chain through a key distributor, Sunny Yadav. The information appeared sensitive and explosive, an ATS officer said, so we cross-verified every detail using technical surveillance and human intelligence before moving in. Under the supervision of senior ATS officials and the leadership of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, a dedicated team meticulously mapped the network. Names emerged, links connected, and patterns repeated, pointing to a well-oiled racket rather than a one-off crime. On December 28, the ATS, along with a special unit of the Rajasthan Police, stormed the APL Pharma premises. Inside, officers found a fully functional illegal manufacturing unit. The seizure was massive and alarming -- 22 kilograms of psychotropic substances, including 5 kg of Alprazolam, 17 kg of a combination of Prozepam and Temazepam known for high abuse potential. Three men were taken into custody at the site -- Anshul Shastri (40) from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Maurya (41) from Takora, Rajasthan, and Krishna Yadav (33), also from Takora. Investigators revealed that Anshul Shastri owned a firm supplying raw materials used to manufacture the illegal drug Azolamide. He allegedly partnered with Akhilesh Maurya to plan and execute large-scale production. This was not experimentation, an officer noted, adding, It was organised manufacturing with clear intent to supply. The drugs were produced at APL Pharma and allegedly sold across various regions, including parts of Maharashtra, through distributors like Sunny Yadav. Money trails, buyer networks, and additional collaborators are now under the scanner, with the ATS convinced that the racket has been operational for a long time. All three accused have been booked under Sections 8 and 22 of the NDPS Act at Vishwa Bhawan Phase-3, UIT Sector-3, Rajasthan. Officials say further arrests are likely as financial records and call data are analysed. Significantly, this is the ATSs second major narcotics bust in December. Earlier this month, a methamphetamine factory in Jodhpur was dismantled, leading to the arrest of six accused and the seizure of 40 kg of drugs and chemicals.

BJPs new Gujarat state executive triggers debate over factional balance, regional representation

AHMEDABAD: The BJPs long-awaited announcement of its Gujarat state executive has reshaped the partys internal power structure, with the new team under state president Jagdish Vishwakarma triggering fresh debate over leadership influence, factional balance, and regional representation within the party. The Gujarat BJP saw a major organisational reshuffle late Saturday night after newly appointed state president Jagdish Vishwakarma announced his full team, ending weeks of speculation and setting off fresh discussions within the party. Ten leaders have been appointed as state vice presidents, while Anirudh Dave, Dr Prashant Korat, Hitendrasinh Chauhan, and Ajay Brahmabhatt have been elevated as general secretaries, positions that form the partys command structure. The BJP leadership insists the intent is organisational strengthening. According to the party, seasoned leaders have been entrusted with vice-presidential roles, while a representative mix has been created among general secretaries and ministers to sharpen booth-level efficiency and message delivery ahead of upcoming political wars. Simultaneously, state presidents of the Kisan Morcha, Yuva Morcha, Mahila Morcha, SC-ST, OBC, and Minority Morcha were announced, completing the social and political architecture of the party. Gujarat BJP chief spokesperson Dr Anil Patel sought to set the tone, revealing that a meeting was held with the newly appointed office bearers, the state president, and the organisation's general secretary immediately after the announcement. They were formally introduced and guided on their responsibilities, Patel said, underlining the partys expectations. Our focus is clear. how to strengthen the organisation and how to take the development work of the Gujarat government to the people. Every office bearer must understand what their role is in that mission. New responsibilities have been assigned with one objective - to support the government and ensure the party is ready for every program. Old and new office bearers will work in coordination. This is about teamwork, not titles, he added. However, the newly announced executive committee has once again brought allegations of factionalism to the surface. Several leaders considered close to former state BJP president CR Patil are conspicuously absent from the list, fuellign speculation of a deliberate sidelining. In contrast, leaders perceived to be from camps opposing Patil appear to have gained prominence, suggesting an intentional recalibration of internal power. The new BJP state executive has also drawn criticism over regional imbalance, with no general secretary appointed from South Gujarat, a long-time party stronghold, while Saurashtra has secured three of the posts, triggering allegations of geographical favouritism. The announcement has also sparked discontent at the local level. The elevation of a Surendranagar district leader to the post of state general secretary has drawn attention, as he had earlier faced opposition from party workers in his home district. The decision has surprised party cadres and reinforced concerns that grassroots feedback was overlooked. The appointment of Ajay Brahmabhatt from Kheda as general secretary has similarly led to murmurs within the party, with leaders from Vadodara and North Gujarat feeling they were sidelined. The reshuffle has also revived memories of past internal battles. Leaders who had publicly differed with CR Patils working style or whose names surfaced during controversies such as the Patrika episode have now found space in the new structure. Former minister Ganpat Vasava, widely seen as a Patil opponent, has been appointed state president of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha, while Zhankhanaben Patel, whose Assembly ticket was earlier cut, has been rewarded with a vice-presidential post in the state committee. The new executive has also renewed debate over the BJPs stated principle of one person, one position. Party critics note that several leaders who already hold organisational or governmental responsibilities have been included again in the state executive. This has raised questions within party circles about consistency in applying the rule and about internal discipline in the formation of the expanded committee.

Gujarat tribal youth launch 131 Km padayatra over unemployment, caste discrimination

AHMEDABAD: Frustrated by three years of unresolved grievances, members of the tribal community from Banaskantha have launched a 131-kilometre padayatra from Palanpur to Gandhinagar. The protesters allege persistent caste discrimination, arbitrary rejection of caste verification certificates, and deliberate delays that have pushed educated tribal youth into prolonged unemployment. Congress workers, including Danta Congress MLA Kanti Kharadi, joined the walk. This is not a protest born overnight, Kharadi said while walking alongside protesters. For years, representations were made at the district level. Files moved, meetings happened, assurances were given but nothing changed. Because of the rejection of caste verification certificates, educated youth are sitting at home without jobs. When there is no solution locally, we are left with no option but to walk to Gandhinagar. At the heart of the agitation lies the caste verification process, which protesters say has turned into an institutional roadblock rather than a safeguard. Tribal leader Ishwarbhai Damor traced the crisis back three to four years, saying the community exhausted every constitutional channel before hitting the streets. We submitted written applications to Mamlatdars, Collectors, Ministers, the Chief Minister, even the Governor, Damor said. Our only demand was to remove the hurdles in caste certificate verification. Till today, there is no permanent or humane solution. Damor alleged that the consequences have been devastating. Youth who studied for years, cleared government exams through hard work, had their appointment orders withheld only because their caste certificates were kept pending or cancelled. Careers were paused, futures were frozen, he said. Taking the charge further, Damor accused verification committees of deliberately sabotaging candidates. Certificates are cancelled over minor grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, or technicalities. This is not scrutiny; this is obstruction. It feels like the administration is actively trying to prevent tribal youth from entering government service, he said, calling the practice condemnable and inhuman. According to Damor, repeated applications, follow-ups, and appeals yielded nothing, forcing leaders and youth from across the region to unite under one banner. That helplessness is why this walk has begun today, he said. It is not politics it is survival. Another tribal leader, Shankarbhai, put the issue in stark terms, questioning the very identity recognition of the community. For the last two years, we have been knocking on the governments doors, he said. There has been no solution. Our boys and girls remain jobless. If the government doubts whether we are tribal, then test our DNA but stop destroying our childrens future. The protesters have made their next step clear: if assurances replace action once again, the streets outside the power centre will turn into a protest site.

Thackeray brothers need Marathi vote consolidation, sizable Muslim and Dalit votes to win BMC polls

MUMBAI: If Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray eye to win the Asias largest civic body (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) polls, the leaders have to repeat Shiv Sena (UBT)'s 2024 Lok Sabha performance. It will help them to win as many as 113 seats out of 227 in the BMC polls. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) had won the three seats out of six Lok Sabha seats while it lost one seat, by 34 votes in Mumbai. Congress's vote base -- Muslim and Dalit -- and Sharad Pawars supporters from the western Maharashtra region who stay in Mumbai, helped to secure several seats. MVA was successful in restrictingthe BJP and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shindes Shiv Sena to one seat each only in the financial capital. In the BMC polls scheduled on January 15 of next year, Congress has refused to be part of the Thackeray brother alliance, over differences in decent space and number of seats. Also, Raj Thackeray's stand against North India is considered problematic for Congresss North Indian voters. Thackerays have joined hands after 20 years, but many challenges loom on the road to the BMC However, the silver lining for Uddhav Thackeray is, Raj Thackeray-led MNS has a seven per cent vote share in Mumbai, which will help them both to fill the gap caused by Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Congress, but that is not enough at all, as there is still a gap of six per cent. Thackerays has to go an extra mile by addressing as many rallies as possible, galvanising the ground network and utilising funds. Only then ther is a possiblity, that they will be able to swing the verdict in their favour. Despite Thackeray's alliance, the BJP is unfazed and is comfortable on the ground as it has 27 per cent vote share in Mumbai, and even DCM Eknath Shinde will pull in at least five per cent vote share. Most likely, the BJP and Shiv Sena will march towards a historic win in this closely contested BMC election. Shinde led Shiv Sena has won the six state assembly seats in Mumbai, while BJP had won 15, and DCM Ajit Pawar led NCP has won one seat; therefore, arithmetically, BJP and Shiv Sena are unperturbed. The split in Maha Vikas Aghadi has boosted the confidence of the BJP and its Gujarati, Marwari and North Indian vote bank in Mumbai remains unaffected. However, the opposition are getting divided into multiple forces. Meanwhile, if Muslim and Dalit votes get divided among the Thackerays, Congress, NCP SP, Samajwadi Party, MIM, then it will be difficult to repeat the Lok Sabhas template again in BMC polls. Congress, VBA seal alliance for BMC polls Uddhav Thackeray banks on his work during Covid-19, urges people to vote for Sena (UBT) in BMC election

Supreme Court stays November 20 verdict, to revisit definition of Aravalli hills and ranges

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed its November 20, 2025 judgment that had limited the definition of the Aravalli hills and ranges to landforms rising at least 100 metres above the local terrain. The apex court has decided to revisit the contentious issue and proposed the formation of a high-powered expert committee to examine questions relating to the hills elevation, ecological significance, and permissible mining in the region. The matter is being heard in a suo motu case titled IN RE: DEFINITION OF ARAVALLI HILLS AND RANGES AND ANCILLARY ISSUES by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices J K Maheshwari and A G Masih. The court has issued notices to the Centre, state governments, and other stakeholders, and listed the matter for further hearing on January 21, 2026. The November 20 ruling had accepted a uniform definition of the Aravalli hills and ranges based on recommendations from a Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) committee. According to that definition, an Aravalli Hill is any landform in designated Aravalli districts with an elevation of 100 metres or more above local relief, while an Aravalli Range is a collection of two or more such hills within 500 metres of each other. The court had also banned the grant of fresh mining leases in these areas until the submission of expert reports. The Aravalli Hills and Ranges, stretching from Delhi through Haryana and Rajasthan to Gujarat, are among Indias oldest geological formations. Historically recognised across 37 districts, they serve as a natural barrier against northern desertification and play a critical role in biodiversity conservation and groundwater recharge. The development signals a potential relook at the earlier judgment, highlighting the ecological, developmental, and legal debates surrounding one of the countrys most important mountain systems.

SC to hear suo motu case concerning 'definition' of the Aravalli range

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court's three-judge special vacation bench is expected to hear the suo motu cognisance case it has taken on the crucial issue concerning the definition of the Aravalli range on December 29. The hearing assumes significance as the top court will hear the matter on several key points that require consideration for a broader view on the issue of the definition of Aravalli. The three-judge vacation bench led byCJI Surya Kant and Justices J K Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih is likely to hear the case. The matter was listed asCase | In Re: Definition of Aravalli Hills and Ranges and ancillary issues, in the top court for hearing. In its judgment on November 20 this year, the Bench led by the then Chief Justice BR Gavai accepted the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) committee's recommended operational definition for the Aravali Hills and Ranges in the context of mining. The apex court, while acceptinga uniform, scientific definition of the Aravalli hills, imposed a ban on fresh mining leases across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat until expert reports are finalised. Verdict of a disappearing shield: How the Aravallis edge towards erasure The court also approved the recommendations of the committee, aimed at protecting the Aravallis, regarded as the worlds oldest mountain system. The Supreme Court had, in its verdict, emphasised that uncontrolled mining poses a great threat to the ecology of the nation and directed uniform criteria to safeguard it. Their conservation is thus vital for ecological stability, cultural heritage, and sustainable development. The court had earlier directed the Centre to prepare a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining before any new mining activity is permitted in the ecologically fragile region. It is to be noted that the Aravalli Hills are among Indias oldest geological formations, stretching from Delhi through Haryana, Rajasthan, and into Gujarat. Aravalli move to finish small hills, worsen NCR air: Jairam to minister Historically, they have been recognised across 37 districts by state governments, with their ecological role noted as a natural barrier against northern desertification and a protector of biodiversity and water recharge. Although the Bench allowed existing mines to operate only in strict compliance, described the Aravallis role as a green barrier against desertification and biodiversity loss. Amidst the severe apprehension that the recent change in the definition of Aravalli may be unchecked and lead to unregulated and illegal mining, the Supreme Court had, on Saturday, takensuo motu cognisance of the matter and decided to hear it today. The apex court took the matter on a suo motu basis, after a hue and cry by thepublic, environmentalists, civil society members and others expressing their apprehensions about the revised definition of the Aravalli hills, which may cause illegal mining and impact groundwater level, among others. Three names dominate the discussion: CID (crime chief) K L N Rao (1993 batch), Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G S Malik (1994 batch), and Recruitment Board chairperson Neerja Gotaru (1993 batch). The Centre will finalise the panel before the state announces the new DGP. Tourists rush to Kashmir after heavy snowfall

SRINAGAR: Fresh snowfall across higher reaches and key tourist destinations in Kashmir has revived the Valleys tourism sector, which had suffered a major setback following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. North Kashmirs ski resort Gulmarg has emerged as the biggest beneficiary, with hotels reporting full occupancy for the New Year period. Blanketed in thick snow after last weeks heavy spell, the first major snowfall of the winter season, Gulmarg has witnessed a sharp surge in tourist arrivals, far exceeding industry expectations. The snowfall has had a very positive and significant impact on winter tourism. All hotels in Gulmarg are sold out. We were not expecting such a rush, but tourist inflow has surpassed our expectations, Travel Agents Association of Kashmir (TAAK) president Farooq Ahmad Kuthoo said. He added that the snowfall has prompted travellers to reconsider their winter plans, resulting in a noticeable increase in enquiries for January and February as well. These are encouraging signs for the tourism industry, Kuthoo added. Echoing similar sentiments, Mukhtar Ahmad Shah, a hotelier in Gulmarg, said tourist sentiment has improved significantly after the snowfall. Earlier, people were hesitant to visit, but snowfall has changed the mood of travellers. With another spell of snowfall forecast around New Years Eve, Shah said prospects for the rest of the winter look promising. Tourists visiting Gulmarg described the experience as unforgettable. A group from Hyderabad said the snow-covered meadows and peaks offered a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This truly feels like paradise on earth. The hospitality of the people makes the visit even more special, they said. TAAK secretary general and tour operator Sajad Kralyari said bookings have risen sharply after the snowfall. Tourist footfall in the Valley has increased from around 20 per cent to nearly 4045 per cent, and Gulmarg is witnessing near-total occupancy, he said. Tourists from south Indian states, Maharashtra and Gujarat are arriving in large numbers to enjoy snowfall and winter sports such as skiing. Sajad added that visitors from Malaysia, Vietnam and other foreign countries have also reached Kashmir, and foreign tourist inflow could rise further if snowfall conditions remain favourable for skiing. Tourism stakeholders said sustained snowfall could help the sector recover steadily after months of uncertainty. More snow could strengthen the winter season and pave the way for a better summer ahead, they said.

Gujarat Titans Bet On Holder Is Interesting, His Six-hitting Abilities Have Improved, Says Pathan

Indian Premier League: Former India left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan said Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 champions Gujarat Titans (GT) have shown immense faith in West Indies fast bowling all-rounder Jason Holder, noting that his improved six-hitting ability alongside his new-ball bowling will benefit the side in the 2026 season. Holder has been a familiar face in the Indian Premier League, having previously represented Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, and Rajasthan Royals. In the auction held in Abu Dhabi, GT aggressively pursued Holder and eventually got him for Rs 7 crore after a prolonged tussle with CSK. Their bet on Jason Holder is interesting. He is an amazing bowler with the new ball, but his batting has improved, especially his six-hitting abilities. GT has put a lot of faith in that. Their main strength is their top three batters: Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler. How they use Washington Sundar will be important, as his batting has gotten better, too. The role of Glenn Phillips, or whoever plays at number four or five, will also be very big, said Pathan on JioStar. Ex-India opener Abhinav Mukund explained the reasoning behind GT's preference for left-arm pacers and all-rounders like Holder in making their IPL 2026 squad. Gujarat Titans love fast bowlers, especially left-arm pacers like Prithviraj Yarra and Luke Wood. Ashok Sharma had a great Syed Mushtaq Ali season. How they use Washington Sundar will be important, as his batting has gotten better, too. The role of Glenn Phillips, or whoever plays at number four or five, will also be very big, said Pathan on JioStar. Also Read: Live Cricket Score So maybe if Glenn Phillips is fit, he plays in the middle order, and Jason Holder finishes. Overall, they still look like a brilliant side. They have the best young Indian talent. I don't know who will control them on the bench. Good luck to Parthiv Patel and Ashish Nehra, he concluded. Article Source: IANS

Ashleigh Gardner Up For Australia Captaincy if Got Asked To Do It

Australian Allrounder Ashleigh Gardner: Australian Allrounder Ashleigh Gardner stated she would be willing to accept the captaincy if offered, despite not having ever envisioned herself in such a role. Over the past 12 months, Gardner has made significant progress in her leadership journey, taking on captaincy roles in three different T20 leagues worldwide. She will begin the new year travelling to India to once again lead the Gujarat Giants in the Women's Premier League (WPL). Gardner assumed the captaincy at the franchise from Australian teammate Beth Mooney last season, leading them to their first-ever playoff appearance. She then received another leadership role mid-year in the UK when England captain Natalie Sciver-Brunt stepped back, allowing Gardner to lead the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, where they finished in the top four. The experience empowered her to confidently ask for the role with the Sydney Sixers, knowing she would eventually take it. She then succeeded Ellyse Perry as the captain for WBBL 11. Yeah, I guess so. If I got asked to do it, great, Gardner told cricket.com.au when asked if shed be up for Australias captaincy after Alyssa Healy steps down. You can lead without actually having the 'c' next to your name. That's something that I've really tried to do over the last little period, especially within the spin group. While 22-year-old Phoebe Litchfield's name keeps getting mentioned by former players and pundits, current vice-captain Tahlia McGrath also remains a top contender for the role. SC takes suo motu cognisance of row over definition of Aravalli range, hearing on Monday

NEW DELHI: Amidst the severe apprehension over the redefinition of Aravalli hills, the Supreme Court has on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the matter and decided to hear it on December 29, Monday. The matter is to be heard by a three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by the CJI Surya Kant and Justices J K Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih on December 29, Monday. The matter was listed as, Case | In Re: Definition of Aravalli Hills and Ranges and ancillary issues, in the top court for hearing on Monday. The apex court took the matter on suo motu basis, after major protest by the public, environmentalists, civil society members and others expressing their apprehensions about the revised definition of the Aravalli hills. They worried that the change may lead to indiscriminate illegal mining and impact groundwater level among others. Socio-environmental activist and lawyer Hitendra Gandhi wrote a letter to CJI Kant, seeking review of 100 Metre test rule pertaining to Aravalli issue. Gandhi also wrote a letter to the President of India in this regard. Low ridges, water recharge areas have to be protected. 100 Metre rule risks excluding large ecologically integral parts that may not meet numerical height threshold but remain functionally critical, the letter of Gandhi said. Rajasthan Dy CM accuses Congress of politicising Aravalli redefinition row as protests continue across state In its judgment on November this year, the bench led by the then Chief Justice BR Gavai (Now retired) accepted the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) committee's recommended operational definition for the Aravali Hills and Ranges in the context of mining. The Supreme Court had in its verdict emphasised that uncontrolled mining here poses a great threat to the ecology of the nation and directed uniform criteria to safeguard them. Their conservation is thus vital for ecological stability, cultural heritage, and sustainable development. The court had earlier directed the Centre to prepare a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining before any new mining activity is permitted in the ecologically fragile region. It is to be noted that Aravalli Hills are among Indias oldest geological formations, stretching from Delhi through Haryana, Rajasthan, and into Gujarat. Historically, they have been recognised across 37 districts by state governments, with their ecological role noted as a natural barrier against northern desertification and a protector of biodiversity and water recharge.
