I Was Practising With The Red Ball During IPL': Suthar Reveals How He Prepared For Test Debut
Indian Premier League: Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar opened up about the emotions of receiving his debut cap and revealed that when his name came up for one-off Test he started practising with the red ball during the IPL. India added Suthar to the XI for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. Suthar, who played for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 under Indias red-ball skipper Shubman Gills leadership, earned his first cap from senior spinner Kuldeep, becoming India's first specialist spin-bowling Test debutant since Axar Patel made his debut in 2021. Gautam sir and the skipper informed me that I would be making my debut. It was a very proud moment because, ever since I started playing, it had been my dream, my father's dream, and everyone's dream for me to play Test cricket for India. From the very first day I started playing and as I progressed through the ranks, red-ball cricket meant everything to me. It is the pinnacle of the sport. So, whether I was playing U-19 cricket or the Ranji Trophy, the goal was always to play Test cricket for India. Kuldeep bhai's speech while presenting me with the cap was very motivating. Everyone encouraged and motivated me a lot, so it felt really special, Suthar said on JioStar. On his very first international outing for India, Suthar carved a piece of history as India notched their biggest-ever win (by margin of runs in Test history. He claimed 6-33 in Afghanistans first innings to become only the fifth Indian to pick up a fifer on debut. When my name came up in the team, I was practising with the red ball during the IPL as well, thinking about how I would approach things if given the opportunity. After coming here, I had three or four long practice sessions. With bowling, it's not really about how many hours you put in. If you enjoy bowling, you can bowl 20-25 overs without even realising it. So, the key is to keep bowling as much as you can, revealed. While revealing his bowling plans on the New Chandigarh surface, the 23-year-old spinner said his debut wicket will always remain his favourit. When they were bowling, a few deliveries were turning. When I was batting, the odd ball was holding up. So, I felt there might be some assistance for the spinners on that track. As soon as I bowled my first over, the ball was turning, so I tried to bowl my stock ball as much as possible on that wicket. Over 500 athletes from 78 countries participate in World Yogasana Cship: Udit Sheth
Umar Raina Ahmedabad, Jun 8: President of Yogasana Bharat and Vice President of World Yogasana, Udit Sheth, on Sunday said that the inaugural World Yogasana Championship has witnessed participation from more than 500 athletes representing 78 countries, marking a historic milestone in the global promotion of Yogasana as a competitive sport. Speaking exclusively to Rising Kashmir on the sidelines of the championship being held in Ahmedabad, Sheth described the event as a significant step towards taking Indias ancient heritage from Ashram to Arena while preserving its spiritual roots. About 78 countries have come here and more than 500 athletes are participating. This is a matter of pride for India that athletes from across the world have gathered here to compete in Yogasana, he said. The championship is being hosted at the state-of-the-art TransStadia Arena in Ahmedabad. Sheth said the facility, developed through a public-private partnership with the Gujarat Government, has provided ideal conditions for athletes despite the soaring temperatures outside. While the temperature outside may touch 46 degrees Celsius, inside the arena it is maintained between 24 and 28 degrees, which is ideal for athletes. Lower temperatures can increase the risk of injuries, so athlete welfare has remained our top priority, he said. Sheth credited the successful organisation of the championship to the support received from the Government of India, the Sports Authority of India, the Sports Authority of Gujarat, and several senior leaders and institutions. He noted that Gujarat Chief Minister, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, and yoga guru Swami Ramdev were among the dignitaries associated with the event. Reflecting on the challenges of organising the first-ever World Yogasana Championship, Sheth said the biggest task was connecting and preparing participating nations within a short span of time. The most difficult part was bringing together so many countries and ensuring they were adequately trained. Our Learning and Development Officers remained in constant touch with participating nations, providing coaching, technical training and judging education. This helped athletes arrive prepared and compete at a high level, he said. Highlighting the growing recognition of Yogasana as a sport, Sheth said the movement has gained momentum under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has played a major role in popularising yoga globally. Yoga was born in the ashram and is deeply connected with our inner self. As we bring it into the arena as a competitive sport, we must not forget its heritage and values. Yogasana combines sporting excellence with the philosophy of yoga, he said. Calling Yogasana one of the most sustainable sports in the world, Sheth said it carries even greater relevance at a time when the world is facing wars, stress and climate-related challenges. Looking towards the future, he expressed confidence that the sport would continue to grow internationally. This championship is only a trailer. The real journey has just begun. Our goal is to expand Yogasana to nearly 150 countries in the coming years. We are also working towards establishing professional leagues and eventually securing a place in major international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics through the demonstration sport route, he said. Sheth emphasized that increasing the sports popularity would depend on making competitions more engaging and understandable for spectators through improved broadcasting, graphics, slow-motion analysis and simplified scoring systems. Our product is strong. We now need to package it in a way that audiences around the world can easily understand and enjoy. That is how the sport will grow further, he said. Concluding with a message for athletes and stakeholders, Sheth said the inaugural championship marks the beginning of a historic journey. Five years from now, when we look back, we will realize that we were all part of history. This is the start of a new chapter for Yogasana, and together we must work hard to make that history even stronger, he added.

The Untold Story of Team India Spin Coach Sairaj Bahutule
With the Test against Afghanistan at New Chandigarh, former India player Sairaj Bahutule began his new innings with Team India, this time not as a player but as India's new spin-bowling coach. India has never lacked for big-name spinners, and compared to them, former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule was neither as prominent nor as well-known. The truth is that his name may not be popular with Gen Z as he was not in the news in recent years for some controversy or some juicy stories. He has consistently been involved in cricket and not only coached the IPL sides (this season Punjab Kings), but also previously served in the India Under-19, India A and domestic sides. Bahutule himself played two Tests and eight ODIs, taking five international wickets. Clearly, he wasn't very successful in international cricket and accordingly didnt get many opportunities. However, in a first-class career spanning nearly two decades, he took 630 wickets, scored over 6,000 runs, and took 197 wickets in List A cricket. He played in six Ranji Trophy finals (all for Mumbai), winning all of them. The most talked-about of these was the 2003-04 final, in which he scored 92 runs, lower down the order. Currently around 53, Bahutule's resume as a coach is comparatively much better. He retired from cricket and served as head coach of Vidarbha, Kerala, Gujarat, and Bengal. In the IPL, he was spin-bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals and then Punjab Kings. He was also associated with the BCCI and coached at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru from 2021 to 2024. He was the bowling coach for the Indian team that won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2022 and was part of the support staff for the 2024 edition of the event also. He has also worked as a specialist bowling coach on several other assignments. In India, there aren't many coaches with such an active resume. Well, now he's got his biggest promotion, and what could be a bigger responsibility than joining Team India's support staff? This role with Team India will open the doors of international assignments for him. With the opportunity to play international cricket drying, Bahutule intended to remain involved with the game as a coach. Thats why while still playing cricket, when an opportunity came to coach the Vidarbha side, he grabbed it with both hands and announced his retirement. He became only the 9th bowler to take 400 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. Despite all this, Bahutule is disappointed that he never played in the IPL. He played List A cricket until 2010, T20 cricket until 2011, and first-class cricket until 2013, but franchises focused more on his age than his skill. Especially in the first two seasons of the IPL, he was one of the most successful spinners in India. Bhuutule holds a unique record that often goes unnoticed when his name is mentioned. He holds the India record for missing the most matches during his One Day International career. He played seven ODI between December 1997 and January 1998 but returned to Team India in November 2003 to play another one. During that period, Team India had played 196 consecutive ODI in which he was not part of the team. He failed to make a significant impact upon his return and was sidelined thereafter. In Indian cricket, the most discussed story of a cricketers recovery from a traumatic car accident gets connected with Rishabh Pant. The story of Sairaj Bahutules accident was no less tragic. In July 1990, the car accident of Vivek Singh, son of famous singers Jagjit and Chitra Singh, in which he died was in the headlines. Sairaj Bahutule, his close friend, was also with him in the car and was lucky to survive. He broke my femur, and had a major fracture on his right leg, and needed to have a steel rod inserted in the leg. He also slipped into a coma, and it was very, very tough. Also Read: Live Cricket Score The medical aid and familys support helped him, particularly his fathers support, who himself was a Ranji cricketer. His father Vasant, who played for Maharashtra, kept on motivating him to get back to playing cricket. The steel rod was removed a year after the accident and very soon he started playing for the senior Mumbai team as well as got picked for the India Under-19 squad against New Zealand.
Umar Raina Ahmedabad, Jun 7: Emphasising the distinction between traditional yoga and competitive yogasana, Dr. Jaydeep Arya, General Secretary of World Yogasana and Yogasana Bharat, said that Yogasana is rapidly emerging as a global competitive sport and is on a path towards inclusion in major international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and eventually the Olympics. Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the 1st World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Dr. Arya said that while yoga is a spiritual journey aimed at self-realisation and wellness, yogasana focuses on fitness, endurance, flexibility and athletic excellence. Yoga is a journey to meet the inner self and attain spiritual growth, whereas Yogasana is a competitive sport. Fitness, endurance and flexibility form the foundation of Yogasana. Without these attributes, an athlete cannot excel in the discipline, he said. Dr. Arya noted that the inaugural World Yogasana Championship has helped establish a clear distinction between yoga as a holistic practice and yogasana as a sporting discipline. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modis vision for promoting yogasana on the global stage and transforming it into a competitive sport. He expressed confidence that Yogasana would soon become part of international multi-sport events. We have already secured a place in the Commonwealth Games movement and are actively pursuing our Olympic journey. This is a major achievement for India as an indigenous discipline moves towards international sporting recognition, he said. Highlighting the challenges faced in organising the championship, Dr. Arya said geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, airport closures, rising airfares and health concerns in certain African nations created significant hurdles. Despite these challenges, nearly 500 participants from various countries attended the championship. Even with travel costs increasing two to three times due to regional conflicts and disruptions, athletes remained committed to Yogasana and travelled to Ahmedabad. Their dedication has made this championship a success, he said. Dr. Arya also acknowledged the presence and support of Yoga Baba Ramdev, saying his participation sent a strong message that yogic traditions support the transition of yoga practices from ashrams to sporting arenas. Addressing concerns that yoga is traditionally viewed as an activity for older generations, Dr. Arya said the perception is changing rapidly. He pointed out that the National Education Policy (NEP) is encouraging the integration of yoga and yogasana into educational institutions. As Chairman of the Haryana Yoga Commission, he revealed that Haryana has already incorporated yoga and yogasana into its education curriculum, making it one of the first states in the country to do so. He further stated that CBSE and ICSE boards have introduced yoga and yogasana as elective and skill-based subjects, while several other educational boards are joining the movement. We are creating an educational ecosystem where yoga and yogasana become part of students development and skill-building process, he said. Speaking about global expansion, Dr. Arya said Yogasana Bharat and World Yogasana are currently active in more than 700 districts across India and are training participants in over 100 countries through online platforms and distance learning methods. COVID-19 taught us the power of digital education. Through online training platforms and virtual coaching, we have been able to reach athletes across the world. Today, more than 100 countries are receiving training in yogasana, he said. He revealed that World Yogasana plans to expand its outreach to over 50 additional countries in the coming months through collaborations with educational institutions and governments. Mauritius has already incorporated yogasana into its curriculum and is set to host the next World Yogasana Championship in 2028. To strengthen international participation, World Yogasana is deploying coaches worldwide, training athletes, coaches, technical officials and administrators in all aspects of the sport, including judging systems, digital scoring and event management. Dr. Arya stressed that yogasana is not only a sport in itself but also a valuable tool for enhancing performance in other sports. Referring to Olympic medallists and elite athletes, he said yoga and pranayama help improve concentration, mental stability and overall sporting excellence. He highlighted that several countries, including Bangladesh and Nepal, have already officially recognised yogasana as a sport, while India remains a key driver of its international growth. According to Dr. Arya, India currently has more than 10 lakh yogasana athletes, supported by over 2,000 trained coaches and thousands of yoga academies and studios across the country. Major institutions, including NIS Patiala, Patanjali University and sports universities, are producing trained yogasana professionals every year. Looking ahead, he envisioned a future where yogasana would rival the popularity of mainstream sports. The enthusiasm among young athletes is growing rapidly. Yogasana is becoming a platform for fitness, discipline and professional opportunities. The athletes of today will become coaches, mentors and global ambassadors of yogasana tomorrow, he said. Dr. Arya reiterated the philosophy guiding the global yogasana movement: We are not competing against other countries. We are working together to make the world healthier and better. Our guiding principle remains Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam the world is one family.

The data will sit within Indian borders. The company running the hardware will not. What sovereignty actually requires The governments standard claim is that data residency equals sovereignty. As long as data does not cross the border, the argument goes, the infrastructure qualifies as national. This framing collapses an important distinction. Data residency tells you where information is stored. Operational control tells you who can disable, audit, patch, or throttle the system that processes it. G42 is not an independent commercial firm. Its chairman, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is the UAEs national security adviser and a brother of the president. Mubadala, Abu Dhabis sovereign wealth fund, holds a stake in the company. Under the framework formalised on 15 May, a G42 unit will handle installation, operations, and maintenance of the supercomputer. This means the operational control layer of Indias most powerful AI cluster reports, ultimately, to a foreign state apparatus. A legal concept worth noting here is what scholars of AI governance call remote disablement: a foreign vendor, under compulsion from its home government or pursuant to contractual terms, can restrict or disable hardware deployed on Indian territory. A system whose inferential capacity runs on infrastructure subject to foreign jurisdiction is not sovereign in any meaningful operational sense. It is leased. The hardware layer underneath The G42 issue is the most visible part of a deeper structural problem. Indias broader AI infrastructure is built almost entirely on foreign silicon. The IndiaAI Mission has onboarded 38,000 Nvidia GPUs, available at Rs 65 per GPU-hour. Yottas Shakti Cloud, billed as sovereign AI cloud infrastructure, is adding 20,736 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs at its Greater Noida campus. Reliances one-gigawatt AI data centre in Gujarat is being built on Blackwell architecture. L&T is constructing gigawatt-scale AI factory infrastructure in Chennai and Mumbai, also on Nvidia systems. Every one of these chips is subject to US export licensing. Under the Biden administrations AI Diffusion framework, India was placed in Tier 2 with a cumulative cap equivalent to roughly 50,000 H100-class GPUs through 2027. For context: a single American hyperscaler deploys more than that for a single project. Indias entire two-year allocation is a rounding error in the US domestic AI buildout. The Trump administration rolled back the formal diffusion rules in 2025, but the underlying architecture of export control authority remains intact. Washington can reinstate access restrictions. The hardware layer is a foreign chokepoint dressed in Indian branding. The G42 trust problem G42s recent history complicates the picture further. In January 2024, the US House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party wrote to the Commerce Secretary calling for an investigation into G42s ties to Huawei, BGI Genomics, and entities linked to the PRCs military-civil fusion programme. The committee noted that G42s CEO, Peng Xiao, was affiliated with an expansive network of UAE and China-based companies developing dual-use technologies. G42 subsequently divested its Chinese holdings and accepted US-imposed constraints as a condition of Microsofts $1.5 billion investment. India is now deploying the same firm as the operator of its national AI supercomputer. That G42 cleaned up its China entanglements to access American capital is not the same as saying those entanglements are irrelevant to Indias strategic calculus. The company that holds the maintenance contract on Condor Galaxy India is the same company that, two years ago, was under active US Congressional pressure over its ties to Chinese military-linked entities. Indias security establishment is presumably aware of this. Whether it has been adequately weighed against the compute access on offer is another question. The steelman: why India may have no choice The counter-argument is serious and should not be dismissed. Indias domestic chip manufacturing capacity does not exist yet. Tatas Dholera fab, the countrys first semiconductor fabrication facility, received its Special Economic Zone notification in April 2026 and is targeting trial production at 28 nanometre nodes by late 2026. The frontier AI chips that matter for model training operate at three to four nanometres. The gap between where Indian silicon manufacturing starts and where it needs to be for AI sovereignty is not a few years; it is a decade or more of sustained investment and industrial development. CFR has argued that for countries like India, the more urgent risk is not dependency per se but being locked out of AIs benefits entirely while the technology compounds elsewhere. On that framing, the G42 deal and the Nvidia infrastructure buildout are the pragmatic path: take the compute now, build domestic capability in parallel, and accept the dependency as a transitional cost. That argument holds for civilian AI applications. It is harder to sustain when the infrastructure in question is being positioned as the foundation of Indias national AI security posture, with the government using sovereignty language at the signing ceremony. The word sovereignty implies a degree of control that

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been drafted in to replace an injured Virat Kohli for Indias threematch ODI series against Afghanistan beginning June 13 in Dharamsala, while Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya are set to feature subject to them getting fitness clearance. Kohli, who now plays for India in ODIs, was visibly struggling while anchoring Royal Challengers Bengalurus chase in the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, where he hit a match-winning 75 not out. The injury to his right hamstring has since aggravated, thus ruling him out of the series against Afghanistan. Sunrisers Eastern Cape: South African great Jacques Kallis threw his support behind fellow Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen, insisting the 26-year-olds best years are still ahead of him despite a relatively quiet IPL 2026 campaign. Jansen, who played for Punjab Kings in the recent season, took nine wickets in 13 matches and had an economy rate of 10.20. Though those numbers did not meet expectations, Kallis believes competing in different leagues and conditions is shaping the left-arm pace-bowling all-rounder into a more complete cricketer. In an interview with SA20, Kallis remarked, I think he still has a lot ahead of him that he can achieve if he really puts his mind to it. He is learning his game. It takes time to understand your style while playing in various leagues, in diverse conditions, in front of large crowds, and under pressure. You learn from every experience, and I think hes just getting better and better and learning from those experiences. I think he still has a lot ahead of him that he can achieve if he really puts his mind to it. Kallis confidence in Jansen comes from the all-rounders ongoing success in the SA20. He has become a key player for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history, Kallis scored over 25,000 international runs and took nearly 600 wickets during his remarkable career. Jansen again played an important role in helping the Men in Orange secure their third title in four seasons. He ended the tournament with 13 wickets and delivered a crucial spell of 3 for 10 in the final. This performance helped contain the Pretoria Capitals, despite a stunning century from Dewald Brevis. Kallis also noted the positive impact of the SA20 on South African cricket. He pointed out the rise of several young talents who have used the tournament as a stepping stone to opportunities worldwide. Among those benefiting are Connor Esterhuizen, Dian Forrester, and the Hermann brothers. Forrester made an impression with the Joburg Super Kings, leading to a spot with Rawalpindi in the Pakistan Super League, where he struck at 171.42 and averaged 44. His performance earned him a replacement contract with Chennai Super Kings. Esterhuizen, meanwhile, followed up a half-century in his debut international series for South Africa by securing a replacement player deal with IPL 2026 runners-up Gujarat Titans. Kallis believes these success stories highlight the growing impact of the SA20 in developing the next generation of South African cricketers. Esterhuizen, meanwhile, followed up a half-century in his debut international series for South Africa by securing a replacement player deal with IPL 2026 runners-up Gujarat Titans.
