Five killed, 13 injured in bus crash near Kunjapuri temple in Uttarakhand
DEHRADUN: At least five pilgrims were killed in a road accident while returning from the historic Kunjapuri Temple in Uttarakhand's Tehri district on Monday. The incident occurred as the bus was returning from the Kunjapuri Devi Temple, located about 23 km from Rishikesh. Authorities confirmed five fatalities at the scene. Five people have tragically died in this accident, confirmed ASP J R Joshi of Tehri Garhwal. A total of 17 people were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were immediately dispatched to the location, where the bus reportedly fell approximately 70 meters into the ravine near Hindolakhal. Five teams from SDRF posts, including Dhalwala and Koti Colony, were immediately deployed to the site, stated SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi. The victims who sustained injuries are reportedly from various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Haryana. According to sources involved in the rescue, the accident happened when the bus lost control shortly after the driver started the engine. The vehicle, carrying 18 out of the total 28 passengers, subsequently plunged 80 to 100 meters into the gorge. Four women and one man were pronounced dead on arrival. Thirteen of the injured were initially taken to Suman Hospital in Narendranagar. Due to the severity of their condition, five critically injured passengers were later referred to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced care. Local officials, including Tehsildar Ayodhya Prasad Uniyal and Deputy Superintendent of Police Surendra Singh Bhandari, rushed to the site to oversee relief operations. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident. The news of the bus accident near Narendranagar Kunjapuri Temple in Tehri is extremely heartbreaking, the Chief Minister stated. I pray that the departed souls find peace at the lotus feet of the Lord and that the bereaved families are granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow. I am in constant contact with local officials regarding the treatment of the injured. The Kunjapuri Temple is a revered spot, believed to be one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, where the chest (Kunj) of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen. Police have initiated an investigation into the exact cause of the horrific crash.
BJP Gen Sec meets family of late ex-CM Rupani amid internal rifts, sparks political speculation
AHMEDABAD: BJP National General Secretary B L Santosh on Monday became the first national leader to visit the former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's residence after the funeral-expense controversy, triggering political chatter across Saurashtra. The BJP's 22-minute closed-door meeting with Anjaliben Rupani has revived speculation of the Rupani familys re-entry into the BJP power structure and amplified whispers about internal fault lines. The BJPs high-profile Saurashtra zone meeting at Kamalam in Rajkot chaired by National General Secretary B L Santosh and Gujarat President Jagdish Vishwakarma was meant to project organisational unity ahead of crucial SIR-related political planning. Before stepping into the meeting, B L Santosh drove straight to the residence of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash. Santosh, along with Ratnakar and Vishwakarma, met with Anjali. The gesture signalled a recalibration of Delhis equation with the influential Rupani family. Rajkot city BJP president, considered aligned with the Bharat Boghra faction, was made to wait outside. Insiders said this move was deliberate, strategic and deeply symbolic. After the hushed meeting ended, Rishabh Rupani touched the feet of B L Santosh and Vishwakarma, a gesture that did not go unnoticed in local political circles. Sources say B L Santoshs real mission was to understand Anjalibens mind, and insiders insist he succeeded. Speculation is rife that the party may soon offer a key organisational role to a member of the Rupani family, a development that could reorder local power equations. This renewed engagement comes months after the most jarring controversy since Rupanis passing. After the former CMs state-level funeral on June 16, 2025 , traders who helped organise the procession revealed they were asked to collect the expenses from the Rupani family, not the BJP triggering public outrage and exposing deep internal fissures. During the dispute, city president repeatedly refused to comment, saying only that the matter will be taken to the high command. The silence was read as factional defensiveness, with the Rupani camp accusing the Boghra faction of sidelining them. Even during Amit Shahs recent Rajkot visit, old Rupani loyalists including Nitin Bhardwaj and Dhansukh Bhanderi were seen by his side, fuelling talk that Delhi still values the old guard. Political observers now believe B L Santoshs visit could mark the beginning of a strategic revival of this faction. Once, the Rupani group controlled key levers from the municipal corporation to organisational committees, but internal rifts had pushed them into a passive role. If they re-enter the field, insiders believe the BJP could consolidate its base ahead of local elections, especially with the Old Guard returning to action. However, Anjaliben Rupani dismissed all speculation with calm precision. There was no political discussion, she told the media. He just came for a condolence visit. It has been six months since Rupani Saheb passed away. She added And when asked whether she herself might become politically active, she answered sharply: We are party workers. We will do as the party says. Echoing her words, Rajkot BJP spokesperson Raju Dhruv clarified that the visit was purely emotional, adding: Vijaybhai was a former Chief Minister and a committed BJP worker. The party still feels his absence deeply. Santosh ji went only to console the family.
Another BLO found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence in Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: A 26-year-old BLO and Surat Municipal Corporation technical assistant, Dinkal Shingodawala, was found unconscious in her bathroom and later declared dead at a private hospital. With a gas geyser inside the bathroom, police officials indicated the possibility of gas inhalation or suffocation as the cause of death. However, BLO workload-related deaths statewide spark concerns. Off the cuff: During SIR exercise, BLOs find some blank columns hide painful memories Dinkal, who lived with her family in Olpad taluka, was serving as a technical assistant in Surat Municipal Corporations Varachha zone while also managing the additional responsibility of Booth Level Officer (BLO) for the ongoing SIR exercise. Frantic attempts were made to save her after she collapsed in her bathroom. Her family rushed her to a private hospital in Surat, but despite immediate treatment, the young officer succumbed within minutes, raising chilling questions over whether her death was just accidental. Lock BLOs inside your house, don't let them delete names from voter list: Jharkhand minister on SIR The administrative side projected a picture of a dedicated and exceptionally fast-working officer. Deputy Collector Neha Savani, defending the work conditions, said, BLO Dinkals work report was very good. She completed AIR tasks very quickly and had already achieved 45% of her assigned work. Her statements underline a critical contradiction, while officers insist there was no undue pressure. The tally of sudden BLO deaths is rising, with earlier cases involving suicides and heart attack-linked deaths among teachers. Police have registered a case of accidental death and sent the body for postmortem, a report that will determine whether this was a tragic household mishap or a preventable loss linked to systemic strain. Congress Takes Swipe At PM Over Rupees Free Fall
NEW DELHI, Nov 24: The Congress on Monday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the rupees free fall in relation to the dollar and recalled his 2013 remarks as then Gujarat chief minister in which he had mocked the UPA dispensation. Congress takes swipe at PM Modi as rupee nears 90 per USD amid steep decline
The Congress on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the rupees sharp depreciation against the US dollar, recalling his own remarks from 2013 when he had targeted the then UPA government over the currencys slide. The rupee opened at 89.46 against the dollar and later strengthened slightly to 89.17, gaining 49 paise from its previous close. On Friday, however, the currency had witnessed a dramatic plunge of 98 paise, ending the day at a lifetime low of 89.66. The fall was attributed to strong demand for the US dollar in the domestic forex market, heavy selling pressure in both local and global equities, and lingering uncertainties linked to global trade. Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh took a dig at the government on X, remarking that the rupee was in free fall and on the verge of breaching the 90-per-dollar mark. He also questioned whether the prime minister remembered his comments from July 2013, when as Gujarat chief minister, Modi had mocked the UPA for failing to protect the currency. The rupee continues its free fall in relation to the dollar. It is now about to breach the 90 rupees to the $ low. Does the PM recall what he himself had said in July 2013? pic.twitter.com/TQhP3afTUF Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) November 24, 2025 Sharing an old video clip from that period, Ramesh highlighted Modis remark, Look at how fast the rupee is falling. Sometimes it seems there is a competition between the rupee and the government in Delhi over whose dignity drops faster. Fridays slide marked the rupees steepest single-day fall in more than three years. The last comparable drop was on February 24, 2022, when the currency had fallen 99 paise against the dollar. NEW DELHI: Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have given standing instructions to ensure the welfare of government employees working under their administrative supervision, sources in the Election Commission of India (ECI) said. The clarification comes amid growing uproar over a number of deaths and suicides among Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in states where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is under way. They said that in line with the instructions issued to them, the CEOs are looking into the cases of reported deaths and seeking detailed reports from the respective District Collectors while investigating the cases. The sources said, the question of SIR work-related pressure should not be there, as each of the BLOs is given responsibility of distributing and collecting enumeration forms not more than 1,000, as for nearly 51 crore voters, there are five lakh BLOs in the field. However, since cases of deaths and suicides are being reported from West Bengal, Kerala, Gujarat and Rajastan, the CEOs and the District Returning Officers (DROs) are made responsible to ensure welfare of government employees working under their supervision, the sources said. During the past few days, cases of several deaths have been reported from different states. Ruling parties in the opposition-ruled states have demanded postponement of the exercise, as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharde termed the SIR as an imposed oppression and a deliberate ploy under which citizens are being harassed, which is reminiscent of demonetisation and the COVID-19 lockdown. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that chaos has been created across the country in the name of the SIR of electoral rolls. The result? Sixteen BLOs have lost their lives in three weeks. Heart attacks, stress, suicide - SIR is not a reform, it is an imposed oppression, he said in a post in Hindi on X. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shot off a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar recently urging him to take immediate corrective measures to prevent loss of lives owing to SIR-related stress and work pressure. Now, I am compelled to write to you as the situation surrounding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has reached a deeply alarming stage. The manner in which this exercise is being forced upon officials and citizens, it is not only unplanned and chaotic, but also dangerous, the West Bengal CMO told the CEC in the letter. Reacting to the deaths of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in several states, the Congress on Sunday alleged that the hasty implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise is similar to the chaos seen during demonetisation and the COVID-19 lockdown. He said that the mounting workload associated with the SIR exercise is driving BLOs and polling officers to suicide. Citing a media report that 16 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have died in just 19 days, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the BJPs vote chori has now taken a deadly turn. Kharge expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Based on ground reality, this number is far higher than reported, which is extremely worrying. Who will provide justice to these families? Kharge said in his post. The BJP is busy enjoying the fruits of stolen power, while the Election Commission is watching as a mute spectator. The hasty, unplanned, forced implementation of SIR is reminiscent of demonetization and the COVID-19 lockdown, he added. Kharge further alleged that the BJPs hunger for power is driving institutions to forced suicides, shredding of the Constitution, and weakening of democracy. Enough now!! If we still don't wake up, no one can save the last pillars of democracy from collapsing. Those who remain silent on SIR and vote theft are culpable in the deaths of these innocent BLOs. Raise your voice, save democracy!! Kharge said. Two booth level officers engaged in SIR die in Madhya Pradesh, kin blame work pressure
BHOPAL: Two government teachers working as booth level officers under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls have died in two separate districts of Madhya Pradesh over the last 24 hours. The two have been identified as Ramakant Pandey and Sitaram Gond. While the authorities claimed that the two BLOs died due to health related issues, the bereaved families alleged that it was due to unbearable work pressure and fear of being suspended for not achieving the daily targets. Confirming the death of Ramakant Pandey, a teacher-cum-BLO from Satlapur area, who was assigned voter list revision task in Mandideep area, the sub divisional officer (SDO) and electoral registration officer of Raisens Bhojpur assembly segment Chandrashekhar Srivastava reportedly said that Pandey died on Friday night due to some illness. We are awaiting the autopsy, which will make the cause of death clear. Pandeys widow Rekha and other family members, however, alleged that excessive work pressure, including working late at nights, repeated orders to achieve unrealistic targets and fear of being suspended for dereliction of duty if the targets werent met, caused the death of the middle-aged teacher, who was posted at Tilakhedi primary school. Around 220 km away, in Damoh district, another middle-aged school teacher Sitaram Gond, who was tasked with enumeration duties in Ranjra and Kuda Kudan villages, suddenly fell ill on Thursday while getting the enumeration forms filled. He was first taken to the Damoh district hospital, but later referred by doctors to Jabalpur for advanced treatment in serious condition, where he breathed last during treatment on Friday night, an education department official said. The deceased teachers close relatives and friends claimed that he was under severe work pressure. He had only managed to complete 10-15% of work in the two villages assigned to him. Vadodara BLO assistant dies on duty amid rising SIR workload concerns; four deaths in four days across Gujarat Earlier, on Wednesday, another teacher-cum-BLO identified as Bhuwan Singh Chouhan, had died at his home in Alirajpur district, after slipping from the stairs in his house. He left behind his widow and eight children, only two of whom are married. While recounting his suspension for dereliction of duties on Tuesday, elder daughter Sangita and son Anil alleged that the stress after being suspended caused the death. His brother-in-law, who too is a teacher-cum-BLO, said, Unrealistic verbal targets have been set for us, completing enumeration of 100 voters in a single day. A large part of the population works as migrant labourers in the adjoining Gujarat, so its becoming difficult to track them and get the enumeration work done. Bhuwan Singh was suspended for not attending the training. How can he attend training while he was in the field to achieve the unwritten targets of completing enumeration tasks with 100 voters daily? He was under severe stress due to suspension and subsequent attachment to Ranapur tehsil in adjoining Jhabua district, which could have caused the killer mishap. According to SDM-Jhabua district Bhaskar Gachle, Bhuwan was suspended on the basis of a report by Nayab Tehsildar-Bori about the concerned BLO not doing the enumeration work properly. Prior to this, on November 11, a 50-year-old teacher-cum-BLO Udaybhan Sihare had allegedly died by suicide by hanging from a noose tied to a ventilator in the washroom of a primary school in Pandokhar of Datia district. My brother neither knew how to drive a motorcycle, nor did he know how to properly operate a mobile phone. He was unable to do the SIR related work properly and was under severe stress, owing to the fear of getting suspended. It perhaps provoked him to take the extreme step, the deceased teacher-cum-BLOs brother Dharmendra Sihare said. One more BLO dies by suicide in West Bengal, family alleges SIR-related stress

Mere glance or look even if momentary without sexual intent or act doesn't amount to voyeurism: Gujarat HC GujaratSamachar English
AHMEDABAD: A female BLO assistant collapsed and died on duty at a Vadodara school on Saturday, triggering sharp questions over mounting SIR workload pressure, especially as four BLO staffers have died in four days across Gujarat - two of them after sudden heart attacks and one by suicide. The incident in Gujarats Vadodara has intensified concerns over mounting SIR workload pressure as the BLO assistant, Ushaben Indrasinh Solanki, collapsed and died on duty at Pratap School in Kadak Bazaar. The incident unfolded in a matter of minutes, yet every detail connects to a larger pattern of exhaustion and unaddressed complaints. Police said Ushaben, who worked at Gorwa Mahila ITI, had been deployed for BLO duty despite poor health. Her husband, Indrasinh Solanki, revealed that the family had warned officials earlier. My wifes health was not good. We live in PW quarters in Subhanpura and she worked in Gorwa ITI. We had requested that she not be given this BLO duty, he said. But despite the appeal, she was sent on duty. As she waited for her supervisor during field work, Ushaben suddenly collapsed. Indrasinh recounted the final moments with painful clarity. She fainted all of a sudden, it seems she had an attack. We rushed her to Sayaji Hospital, but the doctor declared her dead, Indrasinh recounted. Another relative, Vikramsinh Suhadiya, strengthened the allegation of excessive burden. We came to know she was under pressure from work that was given to her apart from her ITI clerk duties, he said, indicating she had been pushed beyond her designated role. Collector Anil Dhameliya said, Since the beginning of this exercise, we have been working to reduce the workload on Booth Level Officers. He clarified, We are ensuring that BLOs are not required to work at night, and additional staff members are being involved in digitisation so that BLOs do not have to handle the entire process alone. He also said, We have communicated the concerns of BLOs to the Election Commission to ensure they are not subjected to any pressure. Our aim is to make the process more decentralised. Originally from Tilkawada in Narmada district, Ushaben lived in Vadodaras Subhanpura area. Her death has left her family and colleagues in shock. Police have sent the body for postmortem, with a heart attack suspected as the cause, though the final report is awaited. Her death comes amid three other BLO/SIR staff deaths reported in the past four days across Gujarat. In Kodinar, Arvindbhai Vadher died by suicide , reportedly due to work pressure. In Tapi, Kalpanaben Patel, who was on BLO duty, died of a heart attack. A BLO in Kheda also collapsed and died during duty earlier this week.

One more BLO dies by suicide in West Bengal, family alleges SIR-related stress
KOLKATA: Another Booth Level Officer (BLO) in West Bengal died by suicide on Saturday, just days after a BLO from Jalpaiguri district took her life on Wednesday. The incident has intensified the ruling Trinamool Congresss campaign against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Since November 9, three BLOs have died, including two by suicide. Another officer succumbed to a cerebral attack in Memari, Bardhaman district, reportedly triggered by unbearable work pressure linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Bereaved families of the three deceased have alleged that the deaths were caused by deep depression resulting from the unbearable workload linked to the electoral roll revision drive in the state. On Saturday, the body of 53-year-old BLO Rinku Tarafdar was recovered from her house in Krishnagar, Nadia district. She was found hanging from the ceiling of her room. According to police sources, a suicide note was recovered, stating: There will be tremendous pressure on us (BLOs) if we cant complete SIR-related work by stipulated timelines. It was not possible for me to bear the work pressure. Family members alleged that Rinku took her life because she could not cope with the daily workload. She was a para-teacher but was never accustomed to computerised work like data entry of voter names after door-to-door distribution and collection of filled enumeration forms following thorough verification. She was virtually forced to do the SIR job by the administration. Finally, she killed herself because of depression and stress, they said. 'I cant do this SIR work anymore...': Gujarat teacher dies by suicide, cites BLO workload pressure On Friday, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, requesting a halt to the SIR process. Now, I am compelled to write to you as the situation surrounding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has reached a deeply alarming stage. The manner in which this exercise is being forced upon officials and citizens is not only unplanned and chaotic, but also dangerous. The absence of even basic preparedness, adequate planning, or clear communication has crippled the process from day one, her letter states. The human cost of this management is now unbearable. Yesterday, an anganwadi worker serving as a BLO in Mal, Jalpaiguri, died by suicide reportedly under crushing SIR-related pressure. Several others have lost their lives since this process began. A revision that previously required three years is now being forcibly compressed into three months, subjecting BLOs and officials to inhuman working conditions and forcing common people under the shadow of fear and uncertainty, the letter adds. With reports of BLO and voter deaths allegedly linked to SIR since the national poll body announced the electoral roll revision exercise in nine states, including West Bengal and three Union Territories, the Trinamool Congress has been demanding the withdrawal of the process. Mamata Banerjee has decided to intensify protests against the SIR through rallies and marches to reach out to voters. She is scheduled to kick off anti-SIR and CAA movements by addressing a party rally at Bongaon on Tuesday and participating in a protest march at Thakurnagar, a religious and administrative headquarters of the Matua community in North 24 Parganas district. The Trinamool Congress aims to woo the Matua vote bank, which influences the fate of more than 30 assembly constituencies in three districts, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, and Jalpaiguri, traditionally during assembly polls in the state. Matuas fear that a large number of voter names from their community may be deleted from the electoral rolls following the SIR. By intensifying its protest against the SIR, the Trinamool Congress seeks to reclaim Matua voters who had supported the rival BJP in previous elections.

'I cant do this SIR work anymore...': Gujarat teacher dies by suicide, cites BLO workload pressure
AHMEDABAD: Shock and anger gripped Gir Somnath district on Friday after 40-year-old teacher and Booth Level Officer (BLO) Arvind Mulji Vadher died by suicide in his native Devli village, leaving behind a devastating note that directly blamed the crushing workload of SIR ( Special Intensive Revision ) and rising mental stress. What began as a routine morning in the village quickly spiralled into a district-wide storm, exposing the pressure-ridden machinery operating behind BLO duties. According to the police, Arvind, a teacher at Chhara Kanya Primary School in Kodinar, died early in the morning by hanging himself. His suicide note written to his wife set off alarm bells across the education and election departments. I cant do this SIR work anymore I have been feeling constantly tired and mentally stressed for the last few days. Take care of yourself and our son. I love you both very much but now I have no choice but to take this final step, he wrote, leaving instructions to hand over his work documents to the school. As his note spread among teachers and BLO groups, the district plunged into mourning and outrage. The situation took a sharper turn when viral messages surfaced on social media, showing directives instructing BLOs to work till midnight to complete SIR uploads. These messages triggered a wave of fear among teachers already burdened with on-ground duties and technical issues on the SIR portal. Teachers unions immediately stepped to the forefront, alleging that Arvinds death was not an isolated tragedy but a direct consequence of systemic administrative pressure. Vinod Barad, President of the District Primary School Teachers Association, said the entire teaching community was shaken. Because of the maximum workload of SIR work, Arvindbhai has committed suicide. He was known as one of the best teachers in Kodinar. The pressure was unbearable. The outrage intensified as the All India Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh publicly demanded accountability and financial support for the bereaved family. Its state president, Mitesh Bhatt, issued a strong statement, Reading the suicide note of this Gir Somnath teacher clearly shows the extreme pressure put on teachers. Our union strongly opposes this system. We demand strict action against the responsible officer and one crore rupees for the teachers family. Bhatt also revealed that the union had already submitted a petition to the Chief Minister regarding the unsustainable burden of SIR work. As his note spread among teachers and BLO groups, the district plunged into mourning and outrage. As the pressure mounted, the district administration was forced to respond. Gir Somnath Collector N. V. Upadhyay, who oversees BLOs and SIR progress, insisted that Arvind had never reported any distress. He told local media, We are deeply concerned. Speaking personally about his performance in SIR, he was exceptional. Not a single complaint was ever received. He had already completed 43% of his work. He never informed us about feeling pressured, the Collector said, stressing that the case must be examined only after the police investigation report. Upadhyay also addressed the viral midnight-work message, attempting to distinguish official instructions from misuse. The instruction to work till midnight was a general directive from the Mamlatdar, meant for BLOs whose progress was below 20%. It was not targeted at Arvind. Due to the complexity of the process, we often have to work late. A general work pressure is there on all of us, not just BLOs. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. Additional CEO Ashok Patel stated, The department is monitoring the situation. This incident is deeply distressing. We have asked the Collector to submit a detailed report soon. Political reactions quickly followed, with the Opposition sharpening its attack on the government. Gujarat Congress Chief Spokesperson Dr Manish Doshi said the system was collapsing at the cost of human lives. 99 per cent of primary teachers have been deployed as BLOs for SIR. Workers from 14 other cadres, Anganwadi, Talati, GEB, Gram Sevaks, are supposed to be used, but only teachers are burdened. Schools with three or four teachers have all of them pulled out as BLOs. Threatening orders come from Mamlatdar offices, and the SIR site barely functions. Childrens education is suffering, and teachers are breaking down, he said. He also recalled a recent case where a school principal in Kapadvanj died of a heart attack, due to the stress of BLO duties. With unions protesting, political parties attacking, viral messages circulating, and the Collector urging caution, the police investigation becomes crucial to determining whether Arvinds mental breakdown stemmed solely from administrative pressure or a mix of circumstances. But in Devli village and across Gujarat, the sentiment is one of pain and anger. A dedicated teacher remembered as calm, sincere and responsible was pushed to the brink. Reliance stops Russian oil use at its only-for-export refinery to comply with EU sanctions
Reliance Industries Ltd has said it has halted the use of Russian crude at its export-only refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat, as the company moves to comply with European Union sanctions. Reliance is India's largest buyer of Russian oil, which it processes and turns into fuel, such as petrol and diesel, at its giant oil refining complex at Jamnagar. The complex is made up of two refineries - one SEZ unit from which fuels are exported to the European Union, the US and other markets, and an older unit that caters to the domestic market. The European Union - a big market for Reliance - has imposed wide-ranging sanctions targeting Russia's energy revenues, including measures that restrict the import and sale of fuels produced from Russian crude oil. To comply with these, Reliance has stopped processing Russian crude oil at its only-for-exports (SEZ) refinery. We have stopped importing Russian crude oil into our SEZ refinery with effect from November 20, a company spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday. As is the case with any large industrial factory, the refinery must have past raw material (crude oil) inventories, which it is currently processing and turning into fuels. Once the old inventory runs out, newer products will only be made from non-Russian oil. From December 1, all product exports from the SEZ refinery will be obtained from non-Russian crude oil, the firm said. The transition has been completed ahead of schedule to ensure full compliance with product-import restrictions coming into force in January 2026. Last month, when the US sanctioned Russia's largest oil exporters - Rosneft and Lukoil, the firm had stated that it would meet all applicable restrictions and would adjust its refinery operations to meet compliance requirements. We have noted the recent restrictions announced by the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States on crude oil imports from Russia and export of refined products to Europe. Reliance is currently assessing the implications, including the new compliance requirements, Reliance had said on October 24. Reliance, which operates the world's largest single-site oil refining complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat, purchased about half of the 1.7-1.8 million barrels per day of discounted Russian crude shipped to India. The company refines the crude into petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF), a large share of which is exported to regions such as Europe and the United States, at market prices, generating strong margins. All this may change after US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Open Joint Stock Company Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft) and Lukoil OAO (Lukoil) -- Russia's two largest oil companies that he accuses of helping fund the Kremlin's war machine in Ukraine. Additionally, the European Union has barred the import of fuel made from Russian crude, starting January 2026. We will comply with the EU's guidelines on the import of refined products into Europe, Reliance had said. On Thursday, the firm said the crude oil import in SEZ is a fully segregated facility catering to the production line in SEZ. All pre-committed liftings of Russian crude oil as of October 22, 2025, are being honoured, considering all transport arrangements were already in place. The final such cargo was loaded on November 12. Any (Russian) cargoes arriving on or after November 20 will be received and processed at our refinery in the domestic tariff area (DTA), it said. All operational activities ordinarily incident to such oil supply transactions can be completed, we believe, in a compliant way. Reliance, which has signed a 25-year deal to buy up to 5,00,000 barrels of crude oil per day (25 million tonnes in a year) with Rosneft, has been cutting Russian imports since the US sanctions. The company has huge business interests in the US and cannot risk attracting scrutiny. Reliance, which bought an estimated USD 35 billion worth of Russian oil since the start of the Ukraine war in February 2022, started ecalibration of its imports soon after the European Union adopted its 18th package of sanctions against Moscow in late July this year. Recalibration is nothing but moving the import requirement to a different region. And this may get expedited now, industry sources said. Transactions involving the two sanctioned Russian firms need to be wound down by November 21. Russia currently supplies nearly a third of India's crude imports, averaging around 1.7 million barrels per day (mbd) in 2025, of which approximately 1.2 mbd came directly from Rosneft and Lukoil. Most of these volumes were bought by private refiners, Reliance Industries Ltd and Nayara Energy, with smaller allocations to state-owned refiners.

Gujarat principal dies of heart attack after weeks of relentless BLO workload
AHMEADBAD: A 50-year-old school principal and Booth Level Officer (BLO) in Gujarat died of a heart attack after weeks of exhausting electoral roll duties. His family claims he was under severe work stress, riding nearly 100 km daily and working late into the night to complete voter list entries. Police and district education officials have taken note, while the school suspended classes in mourning. A shockwave has rippled through Kapadvanj taluka of Gujarat after 50-year-old school principal and BLO Rameshbhai Ratilal Parmar died suddenly, his family alleges the death was directly linked to relentless workload, long-distance travel and crushing electoral roll responsibilities. Rameshbhai, who headed Navapura Primary School and lived in Jambudi village, had spent the last fortnight juggling the responsibilities of principal and BLO, a combination that demanded daily bike travel of nearly 94 km, late-night data entry and constant pressure to meet deadlines. On Tuesday night, exhausted after completing work on the voter list revision, he returned home but refused dinner, telling his daughters simply to sleep as he continued battling fatigue. His daughter Shilpa Parmar, speaking with a trembling voice, detailed his punishing routine. For the last fifteen days, because of BLO duty, my father was travelling more than 94 km every day. He used to leave at dawn, finish his work at Navapura and return by 6.30 or 7 pm. Yesterday too he reached home on time. He had tea and then went to my uncles house because our home has no network. He entered voter data till late night, she said, linking each task to the weight building over him. She added that he came home around 11.30 pm, exhausted but determined. My sister and I were studying. He told us to sleep. When I asked if he had eaten, he said no and went to bed. He always woke up at 5 am. But today he didnt. We tried waking him, but he didnt move. He passed away because of the workload of BLO duty. Rameshbhais cousin Narendrabhai confirmed the crushing workload, saying the teacher worked until late at his house due to poor network and had been burdened by heavy voter list duties for ten days. By dawn, the strain had claimed him. When he failed to wake up, the family rushed him to a private hospital in Bayad in their own car, but the doctor declared him dead on arrival, citing a heart attack. Kheda District Primary Education Officer Paresh Vaghela called the teachers sudden death sad and shocking, saying initial reports indicate a heart attack. As investigators gather more information, Rameshbhais death stands as a stark reminder of how excessive administrative pressure can push dedicated public servants beyond human limits, leaving behind unanswered questions and a grieving village.

Gujarat farmer dies by suicide after digital arrest scam by fake ATS officer
AHMEADABAD: A 65-year-old farmer from Gujarats Vadodara district died by suicide after being trapped in a terrifying digital arrest scam by cyber fraudsters posing as Delhi Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) officers. The scammers subjected him to a day-long barrage of threats over a fabricated Rs 40-crore fraud case, leaving his family shattered and demanding strict police action as Dabhoi police launch a full investigation. A chilling and possibly first-of-its-kind case of a farmer driven to suicide after being trapped in a digital arrest scam has jolted the Kayavarohan area of Vadodara district. The victim, 65-year-old Atulbhai Hirabhai Patel, a resident of Kaka Ramna Phalia, was allegedly hunted, harassed and psychologically crushed by fraudsters who posed as Delhi ATS officers and claimed he was embroiled in a 40-crore bank fraud investigation. The nightmare began when cyber criminals allegedly called Atulbhai repeatedly, warning him that the Anti-Terrorist Squad was watching him and probing his alleged involvement in a massive financial crime. The callers, switching between WhatsApp voice and video calls every few minutes, allegedly declared him digitally arrested, instructing him not to leave the house and to remain constantly available. Fear reportedly consumed him. Pressure mounted. Silence tightened. And by Monday at 5 am, the farmer swallowed poison. The family, who sensed something was wrong but could not persuade him to speak, said the threats had completely shattered him. Our uncle is no longer with us today he was restless for three days, said his nephew Ansh Patel, holding back emotion as he recounted the final hours. We kept asking him what happened; friends asked too but he told no one anything. He was terrified. At 5 am he consumed the poison. We rushed him to the hospital. He died the next morning. Linking their suspicion with the evidence on his phone, relatives dialled the number that had allegedly been tormenting Atulbhai. Shockingly, the man on the other end allegedly sent an ID card claiming he was Inspector Gaurav Grover of ATS Delhi, further confirming the scale of the scam. The WhatsApp profile, the family says, displayed two flags and a symbol with 3C in the middle, adding to the suspicion of a large, organised cyber-crime network. Ansh, who also received threatening calls from the same fraudsters, said the intimidation was relentless. These cyber crooks were calling every five minutes threatening not to leave the house. My uncle told me alone, Delhi Police are calling me. He was so scared he was under digital arrest for a whole day. With the village plunged into mourning and the incident sending shockwaves across the region, the family has vowed to pursue justice. We will file an FIR. We want the strictest action. Cybercrime is increasing I appeal to people, dont lose your life the way my uncle did, Ansh said. Dabhoi police have begun an investigation, examining the digital trail, phone data and WhatsApp identifiers tied to the suspected cyber-fraud network. Officers say preliminary evidence suggests a highly coordinated scam allegedly designed to mentally imprison victims through fear of law enforcement. As Kayavarohan mourns its elderly farmer, the case stands as a grim reminder of how digital extortion can push even the most grounded individuals into fatal despair, exposing the urgent need for cyber-crime awareness and swift police action.
