Duleep Trophy Goes Back To Zonal Format, Indias Schedule Announced For White-ball Series Against NZ
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: After a meeting on Saturday, the Apex Council of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the 2025/26 domestic will begin with the Duleep Trophy on August 28 and conclude with the Senior Womens Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy on April 3, 2026. As per changes announced by the Apex Council, the Duleep Trophy and Senior Womens Challenger tournaments will now be contested between six zonal teams selected by zonal selectors. The format is a departure from the last time when the national selection committee picked the squads, and for the upcoming season, teams will be picked by the Zonal Selection Committee as per the previous tradition. The Apex Council also said the Plate Group restructuring has been introduced across age categories. As per this, the bottom 6 teams (based on the previous seasons rankings) will be placed in the plate group for limited-overs tournaments, adding that only one team will be promoted/relegated between Elite and Plate groups going forward. In the 2025/26 domestic schedule, the prestigious Ranji Trophy will continue to be held in two phases. Gujarat teen who shot viral video of Air India plane crash records statement as witness
A 17-year-old boy who inadvertently filmed one of Indias deadliest aviation disasters has come forward to share his experience, two days after a harrowing Air India crash claimed over 265 lives shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The teen, Aryan had been recording a mobile video of an aircraft's takeoff, a hobby he frequently indulged in, when tragedy struck. Just 24 seconds into filming, the Ahmedabad-London flight veered off course and crashed into a building on a nearby medical college campus, erupting into flames. The crash killed 241 of the 242 people on board, along with several others on the ground. The video, which quickly spread across social media, captured the final moments of the flight and has since become a key piece of visual evidence in the investigation. Aryan recorded his statement with the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Saturday, accompanied by his father. Police confirmed he is being treated solely as a witness and dismissed rumors suggesting any arrest or detention related to the viral footage. A screen recording of a mobile video went viral. The minor who took the video gave the details of the video to the police. He came with his father to give a statement as a witness and was then sent away. No arrests or detentions have been made, the Crime Branch clarified in an official release. Speaking briefly to reporters, a visibly shaken Aryan recounted the moment he unknowingly documented the unfolding disaster. I felt very scared because of what I witnessed, he said. My sister was the first to see the video and informed my father. I had no idea the flight would crash. Family members say Aryan has been deeply affected by the incident. His sister shared that he struggled to speak after the event and expressed a strong desire to move out of the area, which he now associates with danger and trauma. The upcoming season of UKK will mark a major shift in the leagues composition, as international players are expected to significantly raise the leagues competitive profile and global visibility. With its unique blend of speed, strategy, and skill, UKK has grown rapidly since its launch in 2022, becoming the third-most watched non-cricket sports tournament in India, behind only the Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League. The first season drew 64 million viewers, including 41 million from India alone. The Odisha Juggernauts claimed the title in Season 1, while Gujarat Giants emerged champions in the 202324 edition. The press conference also spotlighted the ongoing Advanced Level III A training programme, a two-week intensive initiative hosted by KKFI and IKKF to strengthen the technical and scientific backbone of the sport. The programme has drawn over 230 participants, including 20+ international coaches and technical officials from countries such as Sri Lanka, Iran, Australia, Korea, England, Malaysia, Nepal, and others. Notably, federations have been given the option to attend the courses online, making this the first hybrid-format training programme in which countries like Brazil and Peru attended. The current programme, being held at SGT University, is split into two segments: training for coaches from June 211, and training for technical officials from June 1215. The technical officials course has drawn participation from over 100 Indian officials across 30 states and UTs, and 15 international officials, including representatives from Australia, Nepal, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and others. The press conference was held in the esteemed presence of Gaurav Gautam, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment & Entrepreneurship (IC), Sports (IC), Law & Legislative (Attached), Government of Haryana, who appreciated KKFI's efforts for promoting Kho Kho on a global stage and improve the state of sports development in Haryana. Vijay Rupani re-scheduled his London visit from June 5 to 12 due to Ludhiana (West) by-elections
CHANDIGARH: Former Chief Minister of Gujarat and Punjab Affairs-in-charge of BJP Vijay Rupani, who was among the 241 passengers killed in the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, has been involved in Punjab politics for the last three years. In fact, he re-scheduled his visit to London from June 5 to June 12 due to the Ludhiana (West) by-elections. The constituency goes to polling on June 19, and the result will be announced on June 23. Rupani was specifically brought by the saffron party to take charge of the state in September 2022 after the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ended its alliance with the BJP. During this time, BJP's electoral performance improved. The party's vote share rose to 18.56 per cent from 6.6 percent in last years parliamentary elections. Under his leadership, the party had been taking on the AAP-led Punjab Government over many issues, including the law and order and the drug menace. State BJP leadership described him as an ``acceptable, humble and down-to-earth human being who deeply connected with the people across all levels of the state administration. He had planned to travel to London on June 5 to meet his daughter but his travel plans were delayed due to the Ludhiana (west) by-election. His wife, Anjali Rupani, had already left for London on June 5. The state party leaders recalled that Rupani was campaigning for the upcoming Ludhiana West assembly bypoll for weeks and had been diligently carrying out his responsibilities, including attending the filing of nomination papers by the party candidate Jiwan Gupta on June 2 from Ludhiana (West). On June 9, he had exuded confidence that Gupta would win the bypoll with a huge margin. Known as a protg of Amit Shah, Rupani was a first-time MLA from Rajkot (West) when he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Expressing profound sorrow over the passing of Rupani, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said, He was a humble and compassionate human being and a grassroots leader. I had the fortune of being associated with him while he was in-charge of the Punjab BJP. He was a real gentleman politician. Not only Gujarat has lost a great leader in him, but it is a personal loss for me, as I found his gentle and soft demeanour so endearing. His sagacity and simplicity in public life will be missed. Punjab BJP spokesman Pritpal Singh Baliawal who was the last party leader to see him off at Ludhiana said that he was a leader of the masses and he used to connect with people one to one to get feedback from the ground. A sombre mood has enveloped the party unit as politicians from across the spectrum expressed their condolences. Among those who offered their sympathies included AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Leader of the Opposition and senior congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa.
