From Kashi To Rameswaram: How Maha Shivratri Is Celebrated Across India

Maha Shivratri, meaning The Great Night of Shiva, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. Celebrated every year in the month of Phalguna, the festival marks the divine union of Shiva and Parvati and symbolises spiritual awakening. Across India, devotees observe fasting, engage in nightlong prayers, and visit temples. Many keep a strict fast throughout the day, consuming only fruits and milk, while some observe a nirjala (without water) fast. The night is considered especially sacred, and devotees stay awake, chanting Om Namah Shivaya and offering prayers during the four prahars (quarters) of the night. #Mahashivratri2026 Falling on the darkest night of the waning moon, Maha Shivaratri symbolises the journey from outer noise to inner silence, where Lord Shiva is realised as the witness within. In Kashmir, the festival is celebrated as Herath by Kashmiri Pandits with traditional feasts and rituals. In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, temples are beautifully decorated, and cultural programs are organised. Meanwhile, in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, large crowds visit famous Shiva temples such as Siddhivinayak and Neelkanth Mahadev. 2026 ! 25+ Maha Shivratri Hindi Wishes, Messages & Greetings To Send Devotees On This Day Devotees practice meditation Beyond temple rituals, Maha Shivratri has a strong spiritual dimension. For many, the festival is not only about celebration but also about self-discipline and inner transformation. Staying awake throughout the night symbolises overcoming ignorance and darkness. Maha Shivratri ultimately represents devotion, resilience, and the quest for higher consciousness, making it one of Indias most deeply revered spiritual observances.

Exploring The Hidden Gems Of Indias Folk Music

One always talks of the richness and diversity of Indian folk music forms, right from the variety of styles and range of instruments to the sheer excess of talent in each language and state. And though festivals like Jodhpur RIFF, Ruhaniyat, Roots at Mahindra and the earlier Paddy Fields have showcased artistes from different sub-genres, one always feels a lot more needs to be done to familiarise styles from across India. In some ways, the seminar on folk music organised recently at the Experimental Theatre by the National Centre for.the Performing Arts (NCPA) and the International Foundation for Fine Arts was quite beneficial to folk lovers. After Shekhar Sen talked about the role of folk music lok geet - in todays culture, there were sessions by Malini Awasthi on Uttar Pradesh styles, Ashit Desai and Hema Desai on Gujarat, Chandan Tiwari on Bihar, Nandesh Vitthal Umap on Maharashtra, Ratnaboli Bose, Rangoli Biswas and group on Bengal and Rakesh Tiwari on Chhattisgarh. Unlike most seminars, which are filled with speeches and PowerPoint presentations, this one was more like a set of live demonstrations with brief lectures thrown in. Some people felt a seminar on folk music was incomplete without Rajasthan and Punjab, but then, there has been an overdose of shows depicting these states. Chhattisgarh and Bihar folk is heard less in Mumbai, and the presentations acted as eye-openers. One also got to know about the specialities of different states like Bhavaiya, Bhatiyali and Jhumur from Bengal, or Garba, Lagangeet or Bhavai from Gujarat or Sohar, Chaiti and Bidaai from Uttar Pradesh. Whatever region they belong to, folk songs come under specific categories. They can involves tales of gods and goddesses, kings and clowns, heroes and villains, real and fictional. They could be associated with different stages, from birth to marriage and bidaai to death. They could be about different festivals or seasons. The scope is endless. Each district in India has its own special flavour, and with spoken dialects changing from town to town, one notices a change in the style of music too. One welcomes the broader intent of the seminar and also the sheer variety of songs sung by the participants. But there are a couple of things one needs to look at. For a field as vast and diverse as Indian folk, a single days programme seemed inadequate. Only one hour was slotted to each participant, and that duration was cut to 40 minutes after the first few sessions. Thus, many of them were only able to skim the surface. A two-day seminar, with representation from more states, would be better. Secondly, considering that entry was open to all without any ticket fee, it was surprising to see so many empty seats. The attendees included musicians, researchers, connoisseurs and students, but there were obviously many who missed something enriching. While one hopes such a seminar becomes a regular feature, one also looks forward to Living Traditions at the Experimental Theatre on March 6 and 7, which will focus on the folk forms of Arunachal Pradesh. Considering that not much is known about the states culture within Mumbai circles, there will be plenty to learn here. Australian Drummer Alexander Flood Brings Jazztronica Groove To Mumbai's NMACC Over the past seven or eight years, barring the Pandemic period, there have been regular activities to promote different folk styles. Showcase Events organised the Sounds From The Desert shows to highlight the music of Rajasthan and later Fankar-e-Kashmir to identify talent from the northern states. The Amarrass nights in Delhi feature folk artistes. Apart from the purer forms, there has been an increase in folk-fusion acts, where the aim is to attract the younger generation by blending traditional styles with jazz, rock or electronica. Besides acts like Indian Ocean, Advaita, Swarathma, Raghu Dixit, Himali Mou and Tapi Project, the Coke Studio series has showcased some talented artistes. Yes, there have been sincere efforts. But they all seem to be travelling in different directions. This is where seminars, workshops and guided listening sessions can play a role in creating more awareness.

Gujarat Titans Reach Over 5,100 Children As Third Edition Of Junior Titans Concludes In Ahmedabad

Colonel Arvinder Singh: IPL 2022 champions Gujarat Titans concluded the third edition of its Junior Titans programme in Ahmedabad on Saturday, with participation from over 5,100 children representing more than 100 government and private schools from five cities. The initiative reached cities like Surendranagar, Morbi, Amreli, Anand and Ahmedabad, with an aim to encourage physical activity among children under 14 through non-competitive sessions and interactive games. Colonel Arvinder Singh, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Gujarat Titans, said the programme's success was measured not in numbers but in its ability to motivate children to embrace sports. The success of any program lies in the eyes of the children who participate in this program. I can tell you, today we're going to end in a couple of hours, we will finish with the last edition of the Junior Titans of the year. Sometime back, somebody was asking me, how do you measure success in this? This is not about measuring success. This is about motivating children and creating something for them where they can say that, yes, I participated in this. I do want to play sport, not just necessarily cricket. So that is how we at Gujarat Titans look at it, Singh told IANS in a virtual interaction. He also said the franchise's credibility helped attract participation, particularly in smaller cities where children had fewer opportunities to engage with professional sporting organisations. Being Gujarat Titans brings a lot of credibility and that's why children listen to us, and want to align with us. That's understandable, but by so doing, we are just trying to reach out to children and motivate them to play sport and that's what we are doing, he added. With the philosophy of 'Let's Sport Out!' and focus on building confidence and teamwork through sports, Singh further stated the franchise maintained identical standards of organising the event across all cities, regardless of their size or infrastructure. From an organizational perspective, there is no difference in an event which is being conducted in, let's say, Vadodara to what happens in, let's say, Morbi. No difference whatsoever. The event is curated exactly the same way as it would happen in a tier-one city vis-a-vis a tier-three city or a tier-two city. No difference whatsoever and we are very clear on that. The major difference comes in because in these tier-one cities, the children get an opportunity to know more about certain things as compared to the smaller cities. It's because the smaller cities, they don't expect an IPL franchise to be around there in the smaller cities and are creating something specifically for students from that city without any ulterior kind of motives, he added. He signed off by saying the response in smaller cities was particularly encouraging as children there had less access to quality sporting facilities compared to their counterparts in larger urban centres. Craft, Care And Couture: Inside Anita Dongre's Rewild 2026

At a time when sustainability risks becoming a buzzword and fashion weeks often resemble spectacle without substance, Anita Dongre continues to play the long game. With her latest show, Rewild 2026: Fashion for Good fundraiser, staged at Vadodaras majestic LukshmiVilas Palace and co-hosted by Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad, she didnt just present a collection; she reinforced a worldview set from an ideological destination that holds a long lineage. One where Indian luxury is rooted in craft, care, and community. The second edition of Rewild 2026, showcasing the Spring/Summer 2026 collection, arrived as both provocation and proof that Dongre continues to walk the talk on sustainability, craft and responsible fashion. This comes at a moment when Dongres business itself reflects the scale of her influence: the Anita Dongre Group today spans multiple labels, employs thousands across its supply chain, works with artisan clusters in several Indian states, empowering women, and retails through hundreds of points of sale in India while exporting to several countries. As Indian fashion finds new confidence on the global stage, Dongre has steadily expanded her footprint with international flagshipsNew York City, Dubai, and Los Angelesbringing Indian craft into conversations around luxury and conscious consumption. At Rewild 2026, she gathered conservationists, philanthropists and community leaders to discuss wildlife protection and humananimal coexistence, framing Rewild as both a fundraiser and a forum for change. Staged against the majestic palace in the evening, the show unfolded with quiet authority, reinforcing that Indian luxury today must be regenerative and conscious of the ecosystems it draws from. For the first time, the House introduced handwoven macram, inspired by the 140-year-old banyan tree within the palace grounds. She spoke louder with her fashion; age-old crafts consciously shaped for the present, with silhouettes that moved seamlessly between luxe prt and eveningwear. Fresh, energised and designed for diverse demographics and occasions, the collection honoured forest-inspired motifs that came alive through embroidery, bows and surface detailing. Banarasi textiles, woven by master artisans, found new expression in contemporary styles, while hand-painted Pichhwai and garments crafted by women artisans from SEWA Gujarat reinforced the human story behind the clothes. An evolving palette of ivories, warm golds, butter yellow, deep emeralds, midnight blues and inky blacks mirrored the spirit of rewilding. We spoke to the designer about fashions role in sustainability and why beauty must come with accountability. How do you position fashion within Rewild and your fashion philosophy? Fashion, for me, has always been a form of dialogue. Through Rewild, it becomes a way to speak about coexistence, craft and care. My philosophy remains the same: fashion must be beautiful, but it must also be thoughtful. How did you choose Lukshmi Vilas Palace as the backdrop for Rewild 2026? The palace holds layers of history, art, and craftsmanship, which align deeply with the spirit of Rewild. Its architecture and legacy naturally slowed the narrative and allowed the collection to unfold with dignity. It created a setting where heritage and contemporary thought could exist together. Moreover, Radhika Raje Gaikwad shares the same values, impacting the lives of communities through her philanthropic endeavours. The resonance, both locational and emotional, mattered equally while making a conscious choice to host Rewild in this grand setting. How did this season of Rewild interpret nature? This season was about lightness and ease. Returning to nature was interpreted through softer silhouettes, breathable fabrics and a calmer palette. I was in a creative state focused on freshness and exuberance, and so the design grammar feels more fluid and intuitive. The colour palette has sheer ivory, warm butter yellows, and beautiful emerald and midnight navy shades. It reflects a desire for freedom, comfort and connection rather than formality. Your work often blurs fashion and activism. Do you see Rewild as environmental advocacy? Rewild is not activism in a loud sense. It is advocacy through intention. Fashion can influence behaviour when it invites reflection rather than instruction. I believe that when people connect emotionally, sustained change follows intuitively. Sustainable fashion can become symbolic. What tangible steps define the sustainability of Rewild 2026? Sustainability isnt a singular cause or something we do in silos. Rewild is grounded in processes of circularity and plurality. At the design level, it starts with empowering communities that use natural materials to tell stories in textile. We are meticulous about heirloom textiles, responsible sourcing, handcraft-led production and long-term artisan partnerships. These are not symbolic gestures, but systems we continue to build on. An ancillary layer is our work with philanthropies aligned to our commitment to wildlife, urban animal life and habitats. This allows us to amplify sustainability beyond fashion with each edition of Rewild. Has the Anita Dongre woman changed over the years? Our North Star has always been a thoughtful woman who carries India on her sleeve and knows her mind. She may have evolved with changing times, but her values remain unfettered. Today, she seeks ease, authenticity and purpose. Her resonance with Rewild 2026 is mirrored in silhouettes of comfort, conscious choices and emotional connection over excess. The Anita Dongre woman has always dressed for herself, carrying a quiet confidence wherever she goes. How do you define Indian luxury today and where does Rewild sit within this definition? Rewild is a sustained effort that melds my craft with my values. As designers responsible for Brand India, my contemporaries and I hope this becomes a conversation about depth rather than display. What will sustain Indian luxury is care and consciousness. Rewild 2026 sits within this space as a quiet expression of luxury that values longevity, provenance and purpose. How did SEWA artisan communities contribute to Rewild, and why is preserving these ecosystems vital? When women are empowered and financially independent, they take a whole village along. The women artisans from SEWA play a key role in creating pieces for all our collections, with a special focus on Rewild. Preserving these ecosystems is as important as protecting the environment because craft sustains livelihoods, culture and dignity. These women today proudly say they run their homes and provide for their children. Its not just about providing work, but meaning and purpose that uplifts entire communities. One cannot exist meaningfully without the other. How do you see Rewild evolving in the coming years? Rewild will mirror nature, growing organically as a platform rather than remaining confined to a collection. It will deepen its focus on craft, conservation and community, expanding intuitively and mindfully, the way nature does.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath Highlights Zero Tolerance Policy, Urges Action Against Crime

Lucknow : Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the Governors Address, the Chief Minister also raised several serious questions before the Leader of the Opposition. He said, Before 2017, goons and mafia were being nurtured under state patronage in Uttar Pradesh. The Leader of the Opposition himself mentioned some such names, while he hesitated to mention many others. Our government had spoken about a policy of zero tolerance from the very first day and even today the government is functioning under its zero tolerance policy. Whoever commits a crime will be brought within the ambit of law. CM added, before 2017, goons and mafia nurtured under state patronage were running a parallel government. They were promoting the culture of gunda tax, illegal extortion and One District One Mafia. Law had become the preserve of a few hands. Curfew and riots were a common occurrence. Festivals had become synonymous not with faith but with fear. The morale of the police was broken. Neither daughters were safe nor were traders secure. The image of the state had become synonymous with anarchy and instability and today Uttar Pradesh is a state of celebration, not unrest. The Chief Minister said, record police recruitments, a new phase of women empowerment, modern policing and strong cyber and forensic infrastructure are today the identity of Uttar Pradesh. Whether it is cyber crime, prompt and emergency services, or zero tolerance towards crime and criminals, today rule of law can be seen in Uttar Pradesh. Robust law and order has transformed Uttar Pradesh from a fear zone to a faith zone. There is no atmosphere of fear now, there is faith in the hearts of people. A resident of Uttar Pradesh can travel to any district without fear. He added, The culture of curfew has been replaced by a culture of zero tolerance. In place of riots, festive and temple economy is growing. Who would have thought that crores of people would come to Ayodhya? In the 2013 Kumbh in Prayagraj, a total of 12 crore devotees arrived and this time 21 crore devotees have come during the Magh Mela itself. This is the change. The Magh Mela used to be associated with Kalpvasis, but the record created in this Magh Mela is a symbol of peoples faith. Now there is neither curfew nor riot here, in UP everything is fine. The Chief Minister said, today women feel secure in Uttar Pradesh and traders have a fear free environment. In these eight years, more than 2,19,000 police personnel have been recruited. Out of this, 20 percent women have been mandatorily included. The training capacity of the police has been increased many times. Youth from every district have received opportunities in police recruitment without discrimination. Unprecedented development has taken place in police infrastructure facilities. Earlier police personnel used to live in dilapidated barracks. CM also added, Today if you visit districts, you will find high rise buildings serving as police infrastructure facilities. When it comes to modern policing, seven police commissionerates have been established, for which your government could never take a decision. We implemented the forensic science ecosystem in the state. Three new laws have come into force and a State Forensic Institute has been established in Lucknow. Degree, diploma and certificate courses have already commenced. The Chief Minister said, before 2017 there were only two cyber crime police stations, today there are cyber crime police stations in all 75 districts. In addition, every police station in the state has a cyber help desk. So far, this system has also contributed to recovering and preventing thousands of crores of rupees that were being extorted by cyber criminals. After the implementation of three new laws, forensic evidence has been made mandatory in every crime where the punishment is more than seven years. Earlier two or three labs were functional in Uttar Pradesh, today we have established 12 A grade labs and six are under construction. Two forensic vans have been provided in every district so that evidence can be collected and criminals can be punished. These are efforts made in a new direction. UP CM Yogi Adityanath Highlights 60 Lakh Homes Built For Poor In 9 Years Referring to the Safe City initiative, the Chief Minister added that whether it is Mumbai or Gujarat or Uttar Pradesh, only the BJP can provide security everywhere. In Uttar Pradesh, we have implemented the Safe City target in 17 municipal corporations including Gautam Buddh Nagar district. CCTV camera coverage at every district headquarters is being monitored through Integrated Command and Control Centres. The Uttar Pradesh Special Security Force has also been constituted in the state. Along with this, 34 companies of PAC have been reorganised and revived, because it is the nemesis of rioters. Any party that supports riots does not support PAC. CM also added, During the tenure of the Samajwadi Party, there was a conspiracy to virtually dismantle it. Now along with its reorganisation, three companies of Women PAC have been formed and three more companies are going to be formed. The three Women PAC companies that have been formed have been named after Veerangana Uda Devi in Lucknow, Veerangana Jhalkari Devi in Gorakhpur and Veerangana Avanti Bai Lodhi in Badaun. Three new battalions are going to be formed.

BUREAUCRACY In Balaghat, You Can Now Adopt a Government School: IPS Aaditya Mishras Education Movement Balaghat, which had long suffered from the impact of Naxalism, is now empowering the next generation through education. IPS Aaditya Mishra, a 2018-batch officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre currently posted as Superintendent of Police, Balaghat, has launched a transformative and sustainable social initiative titled Ekal Suvidha KendraVidyanjali. The initiative focuses on improving infrastructure in government primary schools located in remote and interior areas by facilitating community and corporate participation. Recognizing that in formerly Naxal-affected villages education and school infrastructure had long taken a backseat due to security threats, fear, and logistical challenges, the program addresses the reality that many government primary schools in interior forest regions had crumbling roofs, broken floors, poor sanitation, and little access to electricity or water. To bridge this developmental gap, the initiative operates on a social adoption model using the Vidyanjali framework, with a simple yet unique idea: inviting individuals, professionals, and organizations to adopt government primary schools and support basic renovation work. As per current data, 36 adopters are already associated with the project, covering a substantial number of schools. The broader objective is preventive in nature, aiming not only to improve infrastructure but also to change mindsets by building long-term community resilience, promoting developmental outreach, and ensuring that youth are not drawn toward negative or anti-development ideologies in the future. What began with modest expectations has gradually expanded, and in its first phase 100 schools have been completed, with the broader effort extending to nearly 250280 schools across remote belts. To ensure financial transparency and accountability, a registered Vidyanjali Society with a dedicated bank account, PAN, and DARPAN ID oversees the initiative, guided by the philosophy Jan-Jan ka bhagidar, ab shiksha hai taiyar. The transformation goes beyond basic repairs and focuses on holistic development by providing students with improved facilities and modern learning environments. Structural upgrades include repairing leaking roofs, cracked ceilings, damaged floors, and broken boundary walls, while schools are now equipped with secure main gates, proper electricity, fans, lighting, and functional doors and windows. Special emphasis is placed on WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities, including renovated and hygienic toilets, clean drinking water access, and modernized kitchen sheds to ensure safe mid-day meal preparation. Classrooms that once had peeling plaster and broken furniture are now painted in bright colors, furnished with modern desks, and redesigned as inspiring learning spaces. Remarkably, the average transformation cost per school stands at approximately 1.20 lakh, significantly lower than conventional costs, achieved through strong community participation and shramdaan by Balaghat Police personnel themselves. To ensure sustainability, the registered Vidyanjali Society encourages community ownership, supports implementation, and continuously monitors the initiative, with members drawn from civil society and professional backgrounds to ensure inclusive representation. Through this initiative, IPS Aaditya Mishra is enabling the next generation of Balaghat to write its own story of development with confidence and opportunity.
