ASI plans expansion of the gallery of confiscated and retrieved antiquities at Purana Qila

NEW DELHI: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is working on an expansion plan for the countrys first Gallery of Confiscated and Retrieved Antiquities, established at Purana Qila in 2019. The proposal envisages adding more antiquities to the collection on display, though access to the new additions will be restricted to research scholars. In addition to it, a dedicated online portal is being planned to host detailed information and photographs of the artefacts, making the collection accessible to heritage enthusiasts, students and researchers. According to officials, as part of the expansion, more space is being made available for the display of retrieved heritage objects for their safer and better display. New strategy: Centre ropes in heritage architects for upkeep of ASI monuments We are undertaking an expansion of the gallery and further enriching its collection. The antiquities will be relocated to a safer and more appropriate site within the Purana Qila complex, allowing for improved exhibition conditions. However, access will remain restricted to researchers and not the general public. The expansion will also create additional display space, showcasing artefacts confiscated within the country as well as those retrieved from abroad, said officials. The Gallery of Confiscated and Retrieved Antiquities is located in the arched cells of Purana Qila next to the museum. The idea behind setting up this exhibition was to sensitise the visitors about the illegal trade of precious heritage items and regulations for retrieving them. The exhibits belong to the Central Antiquity Collection (CAC), also located in Purana Qila, which was created to house the antiquities discovered during exploration and excavation by the ASI. ASI begins documentation of archaeological remains, scientific study of antiquities at Gujarats Dwarka It also comprises antiquities, which were retrieved and confiscated with the help of the Ministry of External Affairs and various law-enforcing agencies, including the Police, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Customs officials. About 2.70 lakh antiquities are in the CAC, including nearly 4,500 confiscated objects. About 655 antiquities repatriated from foreign countries in recent years, including metal, stone and terracotta idols, will also be housed in the gallery. Information on these retrieved objects will be made available to the public through official websites after verification, detailed documentation and proper photography. Work on the proposal is currently underway, said officials. At present, there are 198 confiscated and retrieved antiquities from the ancient to modern period on display at the gallery. The display includes stone and metal sculptures, coins, paintings, ivory and copper artefacts, and architectural panels ranging from the proto-historic to the modern period and affiliated to different provenances.

Supreme Court ruling on Aravalli definition triggers huge protests in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: The Supreme Courts recent acceptance of the Union Environment Ministrys definition of the Aravalli hills -- restricting the range to landforms with an elevation of more than 100 metres -- has triggered widespread protests across Rajasthan. Political leaders, environmental activists, social media influencers and citizens have expressed strong opposition and warned that the move will entail serious ecological and economic consequences. Under the revised definition, nearly 90 per cent of the Aravalli range in Rajasthan, consisting of hills lower than 100 metres, will no longer be classified as part of the protected range. According to available data, only 1,048 out of nearly 1.6 lakh hillocks in the state meet the 100-metre criterion, effectively excluding the vast majority from regulatory safeguards. SC ruling on Aravalli definition sparks opposition in Rajasthan, former CM Gehlot warns of ecological disaster Laxmikant Sharma, professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Rajasthan, said the governments stance that only hills above 100 metres qualify as Aravalli would automatically exclude most of the range. In Rajasthan, the Aravalli hills are largely between 30 and 80 metres in height. This means nearly 90 per cent of the range is directly under threat, he said. Though the Supreme Court order states that new mining is not permitted, critics argue that illegal mining continues unabated. A 2018 report by the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) revealed that around 25 per cent of the Aravalli hills in Rajasthan had already been destroyed. Against this backdrop, the Aravalli Heritage Peoples Campaign was launched a few days ago from Vinoba Gyan Mandir in Bapu Nagar in Jaipur. Kavita Srivastava, national president of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), urged the government to repeal the uniform definition of the Aravalli proposed by a committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, calling it a threat to Indias ecological and cultural heritage. SC ruling on Aravalli definition sparks opposition in Rajasthan, former CM Gehlot warns of ecological disaster 'Road to hell is paved with good intentions': Congress slams government over new Aravalli definition Activists have demanded that the Aravalli rangespread across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhibe declared an Ecologically Critical Area and that the use of raw stone mined from the hills be stopped. Neelam Ahluwalia, founding member of People for Aravalli, said the recent court decision would leave more than 90 per cent of the range unprotected and vulnerable to mining. The situation is particularly alarming in Alwar district, where 31 of the 128 identified hills have reportedly been completely flattened due to mining. Environmental experts warn that excluding large parts of the Aravalli range from protection could further embolden mining mafias. Experts have also cautioned that extensive degradation of the Aravallis could alter regional rainfall patterns. Some warn that if the range is destroyed, monsoon moisture could shift westwards towards Pakistan, adversely affecting rainfall in Rajasthan. Nearly 80 per cent of the 700-kilometre-long Aravalli range passes through 27 districts of Rajasthan, forming the ecological backbone of eastern Rajasthan. Agriculture and farmers livelihoods in these regions depend heavily on the hills, as several seasonal riversincluding the Chambal, Banas, Sahibi, Sota, Katli, Kasavati, Gambhiri and Moreloriginate from the Aravallis. Modi government has 'nearly signed death warrant' for Aravalli hills: Sonia Gandhi Rainwater stored in the hills flows through streams and underground channels, sustaining these rivers and supporting small-scale farming and animal husbandry throughout the year. The Aravallis are also home to diverse plant species and vegetation. As the worlds oldest mountain range, their rock formations have a strong water-holding capacity, allowing groundwater to be stored for long periods. Rajasthan has around 32 major potable water reservoirs, many of which depend on the Aravalli system. In a desert state like Rajasthan, environmentalists point out that nearly 22 per cent of the Aravalli hills have already been destroyed due to excessive mining. According to studies, the unique structure of the Aravallis helps recharge nearly two million litres of groundwater per hectare annually, making the range the largest source of water in the region. As protests intensify, environmental groups have demanded an immediate review of the definition, warning that Rajasthans ecology, water security and rural economy are at serious risk. It remains to be seen how the agitation unfolds in the coming days. On International Mountain Day, campaign launched to save India's oldest mountain range Aravalli

Minor girl drugs father, plots his murder with lover in Gujarats Vadodara

AHMEADBAD: A murder has shaken Gujarats Vadodara district, with police alleging that a minor girl, driven by a forbidden love affair, drugged her own father and orchestrated his killing with the help of her lover and his friend. Investigators say the crime came to light after they pieced together a trail of failed poisoning attempts, a past POCSO case, and a carefully planned escape. Vadodara city was jolted after police cracked the murder of a young man from Padra taluka, who was stabbed to death inside his own home. What initially appeared to be a mysterious, blood-soaked killing near the victims residence soon turned into a calculated crime involving his own minor daughter. According to police, the murder was carried out in collaboration with the girls lover, Ranjit, and his friend Mahesh. Investigators said the plan was simple yet sinister: put the father into a deep sleep and eliminate him. On the night of the murder, the minor girl mixed sleeping pills into her fathers food. Once he slipped into an unconscious state, Ranjit and his associate entered the house around 2.30 am and stabbed the sleeping man three times, ensuring his death before fleeing the scene. Police claim the girl watched the killing from a window, waiting for confirmation that her obstacle had been removed. Vadodara district Superintendent of Police Sushil Agarwal, while revealing disturbing details of the case, said, This was not an impulsive act. The girl had attempted to poison her parents earlier as well. Two days before the murder, she mixed sleeping pills again, but the plan failed. Even earlier, she tried to drug her mother by adding sleeping pills to a glass of water, but the bitter taste saved her life. According to the police, these repeated failed attempts strengthened the resolve of the conspirators. On the third attempt, the pills worked and the murder followed. Investigators also pointed to a troubled family background. Police said the deceased father strongly opposed his daughters relationship and confined his wife and daughter inside a room, locking them from outside. That resentment, they believe, turned lethal. Adding another layer to the case, SP Agarwal said the accused lover, Ranjit, had earlier abducted the minor girl, prompting the father to file a complaint. Ranjit was arrested under the POCSO Act and later released on bail. After coming out on bail, he re-established contact with the minor and together they planned to kill the father and run away, the SP said. Police have arrested the minor girl, her lover Ranjit, and his associate Mahesh. Investigators are tracing the source of the sleeping pills and the weapon used in the crime, and are also examining whether anyone else had prior knowledge of the plot. What police say began as a love affair ended in a brutal family murder, leaving Vadodara stunned by the extent of obsession and planning involved when law, fear and blood ties were all crossed.

Gujarat cop slaps motorist, suspended after video goes viral

AHMEDABAD: A traffic police constable was caught on camera slapping a woman motorist at a busy junction in Gujarats Ahmedabad, which has triggered public outrage and counter-cases, leading to the suspension of the constable. Criminal charges have been filed against both the cop and the woman motorist, turning a routine signal stop into a full-blown law-and-order controversy. The incident unfolded in the evening on Friday at a four-way junction in the Paldi area, of Ahmedabad under the N Division traffic police limits, where evening congestion meets frayed tempers. According to police, the woman, identified as Bansari, was stopped for allegedly jumping a traffic signal. On duty was head constable Jayanti Zala, who asked her to produce her driving licence. Officials said the woman requested permission to move her vehicle aside to ease traffic. The situation escalated when the woman asked the constable to show his identity card, a police officer explained. The ID was shown, but while returning it, it allegedly slipped from her hand and fell onto the road. The viral video shows constable Zala suddenly slapping the woman while she is still seated on her vehicle. In the same footage, the woman steps down in shock as the constable continues shouting, visibly enraged. In later visuals, he bends to pick something up and even attempts to grab a stick from another policeman, before colleagues restrain him. The woman has alleged that she was slapped repeatedly and abused verbally, claiming injuries to her eye, ear and cheek. Panicked and shaken, she dialled the emergency helpline 112 and later went to Paldi police station to file a complaint late at night. She further alleged that police initially refused to register her complaint and warned her about counter-cases. Paldi police inspector M N Parevada, however, said, This was a traffic-related matter. Cross-complaints were suggested as there was aggression from both sides, creating grounds for complaints against each other. DCP Traffic (West), Bhavna Patel, confirmed immediate action. I accept that there has been fault on the part of the police constable, Patel said. Police personnel are expected to show restraint and treat citizens with respect. Head constable Jayanti Zala was suspended with immediate effect. Simultaneously, police registered a case against the woman under sections 281, 221, 296(b) and 351(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and sections 177 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, citing obstruction, abusive language and traffic violations. Meanwhile, in a fresh twist to the case, a new video has surfaced showing the woman allegedly abusing a police constable, while another clip from two months ago has also emerged, purportedly capturing her involved in a heated confrontation with a policeman. Police are now examining past incidents involving the woman, as fresh videos both recent and older surface online.

Companies cannot ignore environment under CSR, rules Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has said that corporate social responsibility cannot be separated from corporate environmental responsibility and companies cannot claim to be socially responsible while ignoring equal claims of the environment and other beings of the ecosystem. A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and AS Chandurkar passed a slew of directions to protect the Great Indian Bustard, a species which is on the verge of extinction and faces threat from the operation of non-renewable power generators in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Therefore, the corporate definition of 'social responsibility' must inherently include environmental responsibility. Companies cannot assert to be socially responsible while ignoring equal claims of the environment and other beings of the ecosystem, the bench said. It added that the Constitution of India, under Article 51A(g), imposes a fundamental duty on every citizen o protect and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife, and to have compassion for living creatures. A corporation, as a legal person and a key organ of society, shares this fundamental duty. CSR funds are the tangible expression of this duty. Consequently, allocating funds for the protection of the environment is not a voluntary act of charity but a fulfilment of a constitutional obligation, the top court said. The bench said under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, Parliament institutionalised this duty by mandating companies to meet specific financial thresholds espousing social responsibility. It added that the provision effectively codifies the principle that corporate profit is not solely the private property of shareholders but is partly owed to the society that enables its generation. The magic of legitimacy is in the perspective that private property is a trust, the top court said, adding that this statutory mandate redefines the traditional role of corporate governance. It added that historically, a director's primary duty was to maximise value for shareholders. However, Section 166(2) of the Companies Act, 2013, dismantled this narrow view by imposing a broader fiduciary duty. Directors are now legally mandated to act in good faith not just for members, but for the best interests of the company, its employees, the shareholders, the community, and for the protection of the environment. This crucial expansion recognises that a corporation is an organ of society, and its 'social' responsibility extends to the wider community impacted by its operations, the bench underscored. It pointed out, Where corporate activities such as mining, power generation, or infrastructure threaten the habitat of endangered species, the polluter pays principle mandates that the company bears the cost of species recovery. CSR funds must, therefore, be directed towards ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts to prevent extinction. Holding that the obligation to protect endangered species is paramount, the bench said corporate duty must evolve from merely protecting shareholders to protecting the ecosystem. The non-renewable power generators operating in the priority as well as non-priority areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat must always remember that they share the environment with the Godawan, the Great Indian Bustard, and must undertake their activities as if they are guests in its abode, it said. The top court passed the order on a plea filed in 2019 by environmentalist MK Ranjitsinh, seeking measures for the protection of the endangered Great Indian Bustard. The apex court has been passing directions from time to time for protecting the species. In April 2021, the top court had imposed restrictions on overhead transmission lines across nearly 99,000 sq km in Rajasthan and Gujarat. However, the order was later modified in March 2024 after the Centre flagged serious implications for India's renewable energy transition. The court had then constituted a high-level expert committee to recommend scientifically grounded and balanced measures. Accepting the expert committee's recommendations, the top court approved revised priority conservation areas of 14,013 sq km in Rajasthan and 740 sq km in Gujarat, rationalising earlier demarcations to focus protection on the last remaining strongholds of the species. It declined the petitioners' request to further expand the Rajasthan priority area by adding 657 sq km in the Rasla-Degrai Oran region, holding that the expert committee had taken a holistic view based on field studies and extensive stakeholder consultations. The top court has imposed strict restrictions within the revised priority areas, directing that no new wind turbines and no new solar parks or solar plants exceeding 2 MW capacity shall be permitted. It also barred the expansion of existing solar parks. It further directed that no new overhead power lines, except those of 11 kV and below, shall be allowed in these areas, except through dedicated power corridors identified by the expert committee.

Environmental responsibility part of CSR, says SC bench

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday held that companies cannot claim to be socially responsible while disregarding the protection of wildlife and fragile ecosystems affected by their operations. A two-judge bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Atul S Chandurkar while hearing submissions in the long-running case on conservation of critically endangered Great Indian Bustard held that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) cannot be divorced from a companys environmental responsibility. CSR funds are not acts of philanthropy but instruments to discharge constitutional and fiduciary duties, particularly where corporate activities threaten endangered species, the bench said. The case was filed in 2019 by environmentalist M K Ranjitsinh seeking urgent measures to prevent the extinction of the Great Indian Bustard, whose populations have declined due to habitat loss and collisions with overhead power lines in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Disposing of the writ petitions, the court ruled that survival of the Great Indian Bustard is non-negotiable, adding firms benefiting from natural landscapes must shoulder responsibility for conserving them.

Kolam: Art rooted in ritual

Even before the crack of dawn, Chennaiites wake up to the musical notes of birds, the winter wind so chilly that it demands a woolen armour to brave the streets that stir to life as the day progresses. Men, women, and children gather to sweep their respective thresholds and sprinkle water as a ritual and then create pattern of curves, grids, dots, lines, and loops. This art form kolam holds a special significance during the Tamil month of Margazhi , which falls in December. Traditionally, kolam is believed to symbolise prosperity, good luck, and welcome goddess Lakshmi into homes. It is also said that kolam wards off evil energies and spirits. Kolams are practised differently in different parts of the country: Pookalam in Kerala, Muggulu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Alpana in West Bengal, Rangoli in Karnataka, and Sathiya in Gujarat. Mention of this practice in Tamil lit can be traced back to Sangam literature, dating from the third century BCE to third century CE. In this literature, the description of drawing kolam s exactly matches the visuals seen on the streets of Chennai today. This shows how age-old the practice of kolam is, shares historian Meenakshi Devaraj. The 15th verse of the second chapter, 518th verse overall, in revered poet and saint Andals Nachiyar Thirumozhi reads, Vellai nunmanal kondu sittril visiththirapada , which roughly translates to: using fine white sand, we carefully draw beautiful kolams on the streets. There are also literary sources that show men indulging in this exercise. A 12th century poem mentions a ghost, presumably male, making decorative patterns from pearl dust. According to Meenakshi, The practice of drawing kolam has evolved over centuries. This shows the dynamic nature of this custom. The other characteristics include constantly changing in terms of its designs and colours. Adding to the list, Meenakshi notes, It is therapeutic. It brought some healing in me. Sacred patterns on streets This ever-evolving art form finds its expression during Margazhi as this Tamil month brings with it positivity and happiness. Vardhani KL, a software analyst (@kolamveri on Instagram), shares, I always look forward to Margazhi . It is one of my favourite months because it is winter. When you wake up, you see how beautiful the climate is. It is also the season of bhajans and keerthans . And when you do the kolam , you hear them. She describes kolams as a habit of decorating our homes. It is an extension to the decoration we do inside. Vardhani urges that everyone should come forward and take up this habit and it shouldnt be restricted to a particular religion or region. Meenakshi echoes the same thoughts. Schools should recognise this practice and encourage kids to take it up. Kolam shouldnt be shrunk to a particular religion, and to women, she says. Usually there is a gender restriction that it should be done only by ladies in the family but the case is not like that for us because its just an art form. The main point here is that tradition should not be lost, says Jayashankar Sreenivasan (@mrsandmrkolam on Instagram). Jayashankar learnt this skill from his chithi (aunt) and his mother. He shares, Every morning, they put kolam on the threshold. Sitting there and watching them raised an interest in me. I thought this form should not be restricted only to the female community. Why should girls have all the fun? His family was supportive and encouraged him in building this talent and excelling. With respect to my wife, she has the leverage of doing it. Nobody is going to stop her, he remarked. His wife keeps the dots and he continues the kolam , he says, adding, We discuss what kind of designs to draw the next day. It brought a uniqueness in our collaborative creativity. Visual grammar In any pattern, keeping a symmetric dot is pivotal. If the dots are haywire, your design goes haywire, points out Jayashankar. The dots are then followed by designs and patterns. I bring geometry into my designs. Celtic designs are popular in foreign countries especially in Europe and the UK. Its looked upon as a symbol of oneness. Our temple carvings have celtic designs. We brought such kinds into our kolam designs, he shares. Once the intricate designs are outlined, it is then filled with colours, not every but a select few, each carrying a symbolic meaning. The popular kaavi (red) colour represents auspiciousness. When added with white, it brings in the value of Shiva and Shakti. The white is Shiva and the red is the Shakti, explains Jayashankar. Additionally, manjal (yellow) adds a devotional aspect to the kolam . To please the eyes, green and blue colours are included. Green is pasumai . Blue is water, neer . It is also associated with agayam, he says. Nowadays using grey and black has become a common practice. The 2025 Margazhi This Margazhi season, while Meenakshi will follow her tradition of showing the verses of Thiruppavai in her kolams , Varadhini is excited about her chikku kolams , Jayashankar and his wife are are working on a series of new designs, something on aspects of Andal Pasurams . We want to depict it in the chikku kolam and padi kolam . Ensuring we keep it traditional rather than trying something with the latest trend, he concludes.

'Child trafficking a deeply disturbing reality': SC lays down guidelines to evaluate evidence of victims

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday, in its landmark verdict, laid down guidelines on how courts must be sensitive and adhere to the evidence and testimony, while conducting court proceedings of minor victims of trafficking and prostitution. It also observed that child trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation a deeply disturbing realities in India. Upholding the conviction of a Bengaluru man and his wife for trafficking and sexually exploiting a minor girl, a two-judgeBench of the apex court, headed by Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, issued the guidelines. While relying on various judgments --Bai Radha versus State of Gujarat, and State of UT of Delhi versus Ram Singh (December 16, 2012, Delhi gangrape and murder case) -- the top court on Friday passed the verdict, which could be an eye opener for the courts dealing with such kind of victims. The top court passed the verdict after hearing an appeal filed by the convictK P Kirankumar alias Kiran against the state of Peenya Police. Itrefused to doubt the conviction -- earlier imposed by the trial court and High Court -- of the accused in the matter. The cases of child trafficking are not isolated aberrations but part of an entrenched pattern of organised exploitation that continues despite legislative safeguards. The judicial assessment of such cases must be informed by sensitivity to the lived realities of minor victims rather than rigid or hyper-technical standards of proof, said the apex court in its 16-page judgement, a copy accessed by TNIE noted. The SC -- while upholding the judgments of the Trial Court and the Karnataka High Court under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 --cautioned against discarding the child victim's testimony over minor inconsistencies or stereotypical notions of conduct. The instant case lays bare the deeply disturbing reality of child trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in India, an offence that strikes at the very foundations of dignity, bodily integrity and the State's constitutional promise of protection to every child against exploitation leading to moral and material abandonment, observed the top court. The SC, while asking the courts to be very sensitive while appreciating the evidence of a minor victim of trafficking, the Court ought to bear in mind: 1. Her inherent socio-economic and, at times, cultural vulnerability when the minor belongs to a marginalised or socially and culturally backward community. 2. Complex and layered structure of organised crime networks which operate at various levels of recruiting, transporting, harbouring and exploiting minor victims. Such organised crime activities operate as apparently independent verticals whose insidious intersections are conveniently veiled through subterfuges and deception to hoodwink innocent victims. The apex court directed that recounting and narration of the horrible spectre of sexual exploitation, even before law enforcement agencies and the Court, is an unpalatable experience leading to secondary victimisation. This is more acute when the victim is a minor and is faced with threats of criminal intimidation, fear of retaliation, social stigma and paucity of social and economic rehabilitation. In this backdrop, judicial appreciation of the victim's evidence must be marked by sensitivity and realism. If, on such nuanced appreciation, the version of the victim appears to be credible and convincing, a conviction may be maintained on her sole testimony. A victim of sex trafficking, particularly a minor, is not an accomplice and her deposition is to be given due regard and credence as that of an injured, the court said in the verdict.

The spotlight now shifts from enumeration to correction, as voters whose names are missing or incorrectly included have been given time till January 18, 2026, to file objections or seek inclusion, a process that election officials will verify and dispose of by February 10, 2026. While 4.34 crore voters stand registered in the draft roll, as many as 73.73 lakh names have been removed during the SIR process. Chief Electoral Officer Harit Shukla said that 33 District Election Officers, 182 Voter Registration Officers, 855 Assistant Voter Registration Officers, 50,963 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), 54,443 Booth Level Agents (BLAs), and 30,833 volunteers were deployed across Gujarat for the process. Before the revision began, Gujarat had 5,08,43,436 registered voters, but after the draft roll was finalised, the figure now stands at 4,34,70,109, reflecting the removal of duplicate, outdated and invalid entries. Election officials clarified that the deletions followed physical verification and documentation checks conducted during continuous door-to-door surveys. A category-wise breakup of the deleted names are shown below: Deceased voters: 18,07,278 Absent voters: 9,69,662 Permanently migrated voters: 40,25,553 Voters registered at two places: 3,81,470 Others: 1,89,364 According to the official press note, despite extensive publicity and repeated visits by BLOs, many voters could not be traced or failed to return enumeration forms. In several cases, voters had shifted permanently, registered elsewhere, were deceased, or chose not to remain on the voter list, the note stated, explaining why such names were excluded from the draft roll. In another significant outcome, officials confirmed that verification of 10.69 lakh discrepancies flagged under the ASD (Absent, Shifted, Dead) category has already been completed. With this level of verification and digitisation, Gujarat has set a benchmark in the counting phase of the Special Intensive Revision, Shukla claimed, underlining that the final electoral roll will be shaped only after objections and claims are fully examined.

Man posing as cop sends Ahmedabad police on wild goose chase, arrested

AHMEDABAD: What began as a routine police call soon escalated into a high-alert case of deception after a man posing as a police sub-inspector managed to send Ahmedabads Navrangpura Police and Gujarat University Police on a chase before suspicion caught up with him. The sequence was triggered when the PSO on duty at Navrangpura Police Station received a call from a man confidently introducing himself as PSI Rathod from Mehsana district. Speaking authoritatively, the caller instructed the PSO to dispatch a police vehicle to a specific address, claiming that an accused linked to his case was hiding there. As the address fell under the jurisdiction of Gujarat University Police Station, the call was transferred, an administrative step that unknowingly played into the impersonators plan. Acting on the directions, Gujarat University Police sent a PCR van to the location. However, the plot began to unravel when the PCR driver contacted the so-called PSI Rathod after reaching the spot. His tone, responses and mannerisms raised suspicion, prompting immediate concern. Sensing foul play, Gujarat University Police quietly verified whether any PSI named Rathod was posted in Mehsana district and whether the mobile number belonged to a serving officer. Both checks returned negative. With the deception confirmed, a case was registered at Gujarat University Police Station for impersonation, cheating and misleading the police. Investigators launched a search using technical surveillance and human intelligence. The trail led to Patan district, where the caller was identified as Tarun Brahmabhatt. He was arrested and brought in for questioning. During interrogation, Brahmabhatt claimed he had impersonated a PSI to pressure a man who was allegedly harassing his wife with obscene messages. Police, however, found the explanation questionable, particularly in light of his criminal history. Investigators revealed that Brahmabhatt has multiple cases of cheating and impersonation registered against him at Mehsana, Khokhra, Patan and Chansma police stations. This prompted authorities to widen the probe to identify any additional offences. Explaining the sequence of events, Ahmedabad B Division ACP H.M. Kanasagra said the accused had exploited jurisdictional boundaries to carry out the deception. He first called Navrangpura Police Station posing as PSI Rathod from Mehsana and gave an address claiming it fell under their area. When it was clarified that the location came under Gujarat University Police limits, the call was transferred. A PCR van was sent and instructed to contact him, but the driver immediately sensed something was wrong, Kanasagra said. He added that verification through technical surveillance and internal records confirmed that no PSI Rathod was serving in Mehsana district. Once that was established, we registered a case for impersonation and misleading the police, the ACP said. Gujarat University Police are now examining records across districts to determine how many times the accused has masqueraded as a police officer and how close he came to misusing the system before being exposed by an alert PCR driver.

ED raids 13 locations in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi in donkey route case

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday carried out searches at 13 locations across Punjab, Haryana and Delhi as part of its money-laundering probe into an illegal immigration racket linked to the deportation of 330 Indians from the United States earlier this year. The action follows an investigation into a network that allegedly facilitated the illegal transport of Indians to the US through the so-called dunki route. The racket involved illegally transporting Indians to the US through the dunki route. A probe revealed that the deported Indians sent to the US were facilitated by a complex web of persons involved in the chain including travel agents, middlemen, overseas associates, hawala operators and other logistics arrangement providers, an ED official said. In February, US military aircraft carrying 330 Indiansmost of them from Haryana, Punjab and Gujaratwere sent back as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration by the administration of former US President Donald Trump. Videos released by US border patrol authorities showed the deportees in handcuffs, with their legs chained. The EDs money-laundering case is based on 19 FIRs registered by the Punjab and Haryana Police against travel agents and middlemen accused of cheating Indians attempting to enter the US illegally. Investigators said the deportees had tried to cross the USMexico border between January 23 and 28 but were apprehended by US border security personnel and placed in detention centres before being deported. Sources said that evidence gathered during searches conducted in February and July led to the identification of second and third layer operatives involved in the human trafficking network. The name of several travel firms surfaced in the investigation following which raids were conducted on Thursday at its offices in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, an ED official said. The agency had earlier recorded statements of the deportees, which helped identify suspects now under scrutiny. According to investigators, each deportee paid between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 55 lakh to travel agents, most of whom they had never met directly and were connected to through local intermediaries. The deportees provided documents, including bank account details of the agents who received the payments. Recently, the ED provisionally attached movable and immovable assets worth Rs 5.41 crore, allegedly representing proceeds of crime generated by agents Shubham Sharma, Jagjit Singh and Surmukh Singh, who are accused of being part of the trafficking racket. The attached properties include agricultural land, residential and business premises, and bank accounts held in the names of the accused and their family members. In July, the agency conducted searches at offices and residences of suspects in 11 cities, including Amritsar, Sangrur, Patiala and Moga in Punjab, and Ambala, Kurukshetra and Karnal in Haryana. During those raids, officials seized fake immigration and visa stamps. In a separate investigation, the ED is probing the alleged involvement of certain Canadian colleges and several Indian entitiesmostly based in Gujaratin a money-laundering case related to trafficking Indians into the US via the Canada border, sources said. Officials noted a sharp rise in illegal immigration from India along the USCanada border, with more than 14,000 Indian migrants arrested there over the past one-and-a-half years. According to estimates by US authorities, over 725,000 undocumented Indians currently live in the US, many driven by economic pressures and long waiting periods for legal immigration. The agency suspects that some Canadian colleges were complicit in the racket. According to officials, agents applied for Canadian student visas for individuals intending to enter the US. Once in Canada, instead of joining colleges, they allegedly crossed the USCanada border illegally. Investigators believe that a few of the 262 such colleges in Canadaparticularly those located near the US bordermay be involved in the trafficking of Indian nationals. Many victims were allegedly charged between Rs 55 lakh and Rs 60 lakh per person. The ED has claimed that fees paid to Canada-based colleges were later remitted back to the individuals accounts, pointing to a circular flow of funds under investigation.

Government reinforces commitment to protect Great Indian Bustard in Gujarat

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, stated on Thursday that the government is actively working to protect the Great Indian Bustard birds in Gujarat. While responding to supplementary questions in the Rajya Sabha, Yadav mentioned that the government has initiated a program for the conservation of Great Indian Bustards across several states, including Gujarat. This response followed a query from Congress member Shaktisinh Gohil, who noted that there is a sanctuary for Great Indian Bustards in Kutch, Gujarat, but only three female birds remain there. He expressed concern that if these three female birds were to die, the sanctuary land might be transferred to businessmen. In response, Yadav assured the Congress member that his fears were aseless and emphasized that the government is indeed working towards the protection of the Great Indian Bustards in Gujarat. He also corrected the record, stating that there are actually four female Great Indian Bustards in Kutch, while the population in Rajasthan stands at 140. Yadav also stated that the government is not currently running any specific project for the protection of Indian Roller (Palapitta) birds. This was in reply to a question from BJP leader K Laxman regarding the declining population of Indian Rollers. In a written reply, Yadav explained that the protection and management of wildlife and their habitats are primarily the responsibility of state governments and union territory administrations. He further noted that population estimations for flagship species like tigers, snow leopards, and dolphins are conducted at the national level, while assessments for other animals and birds are carried out by the respective states and union territories, and these figures are not consolidated at the ministry level. Yadav added that wild animals listed in Schedules I and II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 are protected from hunting. The Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis) is categorized in Schedule II of the Act. To highlight the government's initiatives for wildlife protection, Yadav mentioned that a network of protected areas, including national parks, sanctuaries, conservation reserves, and community reserves, has been established across the country. He also noted that financial assistance is provided to states and union territories for wildlife management and habitat development under centrally sponsored schemes such as 'Development of Wildlife Habitats' and 'Project Tiger & Elephant,' based on the Annual Plan of Operation (APO) submitted by these entities. Additionally, special programs like 'Project Tiger,' 'Project Elephant,' 'Project Lion,' 'Project Snow Leopard,' 'Project Dolphin,' 'Project Cheetah,' and 'Project Great Indian Bustard' have been initiated for their conservation, Yadav concluded.

Vadodara collectorate receives hoax bomb threat email

AHMEDABAD: Vadodara collectorate received a bomb threat email on Thursday morning, warning that the building would be blown up if it was not evacuated by 1 pm, instantly pushing the citys security grid into emergency mode. Upon receiving information, the special operations group of Akota Police, Vadodara Crime Branch, bomb and dog Squads rushed to the spot and sealed off the Collectors Office and halted public entry. They jointly conducted a search for nearly three hours, but no suspicious or objectionable item was found. Deputy Commissioner of Police Manjita Vanzara said, All police teams reached the Collectors Office immediately after the threatening mail was received, and thorough checks were carried out both inside and outside the premises, but no suspicious or objectionable item was found. Following the all-clear, routine work at the Collectors Office resumed. However, authorities remained on alert, with police continuing surveillance in and around the premises to rule out any delayed or secondary threat. The threat comes a day after several schools in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kalol and other locations receive d similar bomb threats. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vanzara on Thursday said police are examining whether the bomb threat issued to the Vadodara Collectors Office is linked to the series of hoax bomb emails sent to schools a day earlier. Confirming the probe, Vanzara said, An investigation is underway to check any connection with the mails received in Ahmedabad yesterday. Police are analysing similarities in the threats, including timing patterns, to determine if they originated from a single source. Investigators have noted that the school bomb threats on December 18 were received around 1.11 pm, while the email threatening the Vadodara Collectors Office arrived at around 1 pm on Thursday. The close timing has heightened suspicion that the sender may be attempting to test the states security response by triggering calculated panic across locations. Officials also recalled that a similar threatening letter had surfaced in Vadodara a few months ago, targeting a reputed school, a private company and the Collectors Office. That incident, too, ended without the recovery of any explosive material. Despite repeated hoaxes yielding no physical threat so far, police said the alerts are being taken seriously. Authorities stressed that every threat will be treated as genuine, with cyber teams tracing digital footprints and analysing email trails to identify those responsible for the latest wave of bomb scare messages in Gujarat.

Shubman Gill Will Continue To Lead The Team For Many Years: Gujarat Titans Director

Indian Premier League: Gujarat Titans chairman Jinal Mehta and director Shaan Mehta reflected on Shubman Gills leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and assured that the young batter will continue to lead the franchise for many years to come. Gill moved to the Gujarat Titans in 2022 after a stellar IPL start with Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 to 2021, where he was their highest run-scorer in 2020 and 2021. His pivotal contributions helped GT win the IPL 2022 title, and he followed that with a record-breaking IPL 2023 season, where he scored 890 runs with four centuries. Subsequently, Gill was appointed as the Gujarat Titans (GT) captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. In his first season as captain, GT finished eighth in the table. However, he was retained as captain for the 2025 season, during which the team qualified for the playoffs and finished third in the standings. I think GT spotted Shubman's batting talent and his leadership capabilities early on. He has done wonderfully well for both GT and India, Jinal said in an interview with the IPL after the mini-auction. Shaan added, The team bonding that has happened over the last few years continues, and Shubman continues to lead us going forward for many years to come. In the mini-auction held on Tuesday, GT strengthened their squad with five new additions: West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder, England wicketkeeper-batter Tom Banton, Indian fast bowler Ashok Sharma, England left-arm pacer Luke Wood, and uncapped Indian speedster Prithvi Raj. Sharing the perspectives on the squad assembled in the mini-auction, Jinal added, We came into the auction with our core in place, and we made minimal changes to our squad. We changed only five players. We came in with very specific requirements. We needed a couple of fast bowlers, an all-rounder, and a middle-order batter. We're happy with the outcome and have achieved all of our objectives. I think we have achieved what we wanted. We welcome all of these new signings and look forward to the next season. We have made it to the playoffs three times in the four seasons that we have played, including winning in our inaugural season and being runners-up in the second season. We're looking forward to building on this journey with the squad that we have in place. I think we will have a great season. We needed a couple of fast bowlers, an all-rounder, and a middle-order batter. We're happy with the outcome and have achieved all of our objectives. I think we have achieved what we wanted. We welcome all of these new signings and look forward to the next season. Gujarat to host Commonwealth Games 2030, while Rajya Sabha data shows sports training vacuum

AHMEDABAD: The Indian city ofAhmedabads elevation as the official host city for the Commonwealth Games 2030 has placed Gujarat firmly on the global sporting map. The decision, cleared at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, was marked by confidence and celebration, with organisers outlining a multi-sport spectacle spanning 15 to 17 disciplines. However, official data presented in Parliament has revealed a starkly different picture of Gujarats domestic sports ecosystem. According to figures placed before the Rajya Sabha on Thursday by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Gujarat currently has no Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centres. The reply shows zero residential SAI Training Centres (STCs) and zero non-residential STCs in the state. The data further indicates that Gujarat has just one SAI extension centre, but it reports zero residential athletes and zero non-residential athletes, across both male and female categories. While infrastructure exists on paper, participation numbers remain absent. The traditional grassroots backbone of Indian sportSAI-adopted akharas also reflects a complete vacuum in Gujarat. The parliamentary reply records no akharas, no residential or non-residential trainees, and no enrolled boys or girls under this system. Taken together, the figures point to a flatlining of every grassroots pipeline designed to feed elite sport in the state. The only notable presence at the national level is Gujarats two National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs). Yet even this highlights a sharp imbalance, with elite-level facilities in place while feeder systems below them remain statistically invisible. This contrast becomes sharper in the context of the sports planned for Ahmedabad 2030. The proposed programme includes athletics, para-athletics, swimming, para-swimming, table tennis, para-table tennis, bowls, para-bowls, weightlifting, para-powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxingdisciplines that require deep talent pools and sustained athlete development. Yet Parliament has been informed that Gujarat has no SAI-supported grassroots athletes at present. The figures raise questions about whether a state can leap directly to hosting a mega multi-sport event without a functioning foundational athlete pipeline. While stadiums and venues can be constructed within fixed timelines, the development of competitive athletes demands years of systematic investment. Ahmedabads Commonwealth Games ambition thus stands divided between global approval abroad and domestic data at homedata that underscores the need for scrutiny, course correction and transparency as preparations move forward.

Committed to uniting wisdom of millennia with power of modern science, technology: WHO

NEW DELHI: The WHO on Wednesday said it is committed to uniting the wisdom of millennia with the power of modern science and technology to realise the vision of health for all. Sharing a special video message at the Second Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, jointly organized by India and the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said, By engaging responsibly, ethically, and equitably, and by harnessing innovation from AI to genomics, we can unlock the potential of traditional medicine to deliver safer, smarter, and more sustainable health solutions for every community and for our planet. WHO is committed to uniting the wisdom of millennia with the power of modern science and technology to realise the vision of health for all, he added. The WHO said in a world facing increasing challenges to health systems, nearly half of the global population 4.6 billion lack access to essential health services, while a quarter over 2 billion people experience financial hardship to access health care. Integrating TM into health systems is critical to expanding access and choice to affordable, people-centred health care and advancing UHC, ensuring everyone can receive health care they need without financial strain, it added. The three-day event, which was presided by Union Health Minister JP Nadda, in the presence of Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav, will bring together policymakers, scientists, practitioners, Indigenous knowledge holders and civil society leaders from around the world to advance a shared vision of balanced, inclusive and sustainable health systems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the mega global scientific congregation on December 19. The WHO DG emphasised that health is not only about technology and treatment but also about balance, dignity and the shared wisdom of humanity. He noted that the World Health Assembly earlier this year adopted the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 20252034. The strategy focuses on strengthening the evidence base to guide decisions through science and data, ensuring safety and quality through effective regulation, integrating traditional, complementary and integrative medicine (TCIM) into national health systems beginning with primary health care, and unlocking its broader value for biodiversity, sustainability and community well-being. He further highlighted that to translate this strategy into action, WHO has established the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India. At the event, Ayush minister Jadhav said that Indias collaboration with the WHO reflects a shared commitment to bring traditional medicine into the mainstream of global healthcare through science, standards, and evidence. Since the partnership began in 2016, significant milestones have been achieved, including integrating Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani morbidity codes into international health classification. Ongoing work on the International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI) and the upcoming WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar, scheduled for completion in October 2025, underscore a decisive shift towards global acceptance, harmonization, and institutional strengthening of traditional medicine, he added. India continues to expand international cooperation in the field of traditional medicine through education, research, and capacity building, he added India offers 104 scholarships annually to foreign nationals, has signed 26 country-level MoUs, collaborates with over 50 institutions worldwide, and has established Ayush Chairs in 15 universities and Ayush Information Cells in 43 countries, he added. Collaborative research initiatives, including Ashwagandha trials in the United Kingdom, Guduchi studies in Germany, and Ayurveda-based diabetes research in Latvia, are generating a growing body of evidence. Leveraging digital platforms such as the Ayush Grid and advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, India is systematically documenting and validating traditional knowledge to address contemporary global health challenges, the minister said. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, highlighted that the Summit builds on the momentum of the first WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine and the Gujarat Declaration, reaffirming a shared global commitment to science-based, sustainable, and equitable Traditional Medicine. He emphasized Indias role as a committed partner to WHO and Member States, and underscored the significance of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre at Jamnagar as a global hub for policy, research, and innovation. He noted that the Summit - guided by the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 20252034 - aims to strengthen regulation and integration of Traditional Medicine into health systems, safeguard biodiversity and traditional knowledge, and harness frontier technologies, all anchored in the theme of Restoring Balance for people and the planet.
