62.50% of groundwater samples from Punjab have uranium levels above safety threshold limit: Report
CHANDIGARH: A staggering 62.50 per cent of groundwater samples from Punjab have uranium levels above the safety threshold limit, the highest contamination intensity ever recorded in the country, followed by Haryana, Delhi, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. This fact was revealed in the latest Annual Ground Water Quality Report 2025 by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Meanwhile, across the country, nitrate contamination was the most widespread, followed by fluoride and salinity. As per the report, the highest intensity of uranium contamination was recorded in the state, as 53.04 per cent of samples exceeded the permissible limit before the monsoon and 62.50 per cent afterwards. It highlighted that uranium concentrations exceeding the safe limit of 30 ppb were detected sporadically in Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rajasthan. A total of 3,754 groundwater samples were tested across India during Pre- and Post-Monsoon 2024 to check uranium concentration. Samples with uranium levels above the safe limit of 30 ppb were found in 6.71 per cent during the Pre-Monsoon and 7.91 per cent during the post-monsoon, showing a slight increase after rainfall. The highest uranium contamination was observed in Punjab, where over half of the samples (53.04 per cent pre-monsoon and 62.50 per cent post-monsoon) exceeded the limit, it read. Meanwhile, Haryana also reported significant levels, with 15 per cent of pre-monsoon and 23.75 per cent of post-monsoon samples above the limit, followed by Delhi, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. High levels were also found in Haryana (1523.75 per cent), Delhi (1315.66 per cent), Karnataka (68 per cent), and Uttar Pradesh (56 per cent). Moderate contamination occurred in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while most other states showed uranium levels within safe limits, it stated. The report further stated, Spatially, northwestern India (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh) emerged as the main hotspot of uranium contamination, likely due to geogenic factors, groundwater depletion, and aquifer characteristics. In contrast, eastern and southern India recorded minimal contamination. Overall, the study shows that while most groundwater in India is safe, certain regions face rising uranium levels, emphasising the need for regular monitoring and local mitigation measures to protect drinking water quality and health. Meanwhile, fluoride levels exceeding 1.5 mg/L were detected in 11.24 per cent of samples in Punjab, while the national exceedance was at 8.05 per cent. Interestingly, Rajasthan topped this category with 41.06 per cent, followed by Haryana with 21.82 per cent. High fluoride occurrences are prominently observed in the arid and semi-arid regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and parts of Odhisa. Excessive fluoride in groundwater used for drinking poses a significant health concern, as prolonged consumption can lead to waterborne fluorosis, manifesting in dental and skeletal disorders, it stated. It adds that nitrate in drinking water is a serious health concern. It mainly comes from excessive use of fertilisers, animal waste, and sewage seeping into groundwater. In India, nearly 20.71 per cent of groundwater samples have been reported to exceed the permissible limit of 45 mg/L, as prescribed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 10500) for drinking water quality, report states. In the pre-monsoon, Nitrate ranges from BDL to 2070 mg/L with a mean value of 32 mg/L. High nitrate concentrations are prominently observed in northwestern and central India, particularly in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, extending further into parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. These areas correspond largely to alluvial and hard-rock aquifers, where intensive agricultural practices, excessive fertiliser application, and improper disposal of domestic and animal wastes contribute to nitrate enrichment. Elevated nitrate remained one of the most widespread contaminants. The highest levels in Rajasthan 50.54 per cent followed by Karnataka 45.47 per cent, and Tamil Nadu 36.27 per cent, Punjab 14.6 per cent and Haryana 14.18 per cent as the national exceedance was 20.71 per cent. Elevated nitrate levels in the Indo-Gangetic plains (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal) indicate impacts of shallow groundwater vulnerability due to unlined sanitation systems and leaching from agriculture fields. During the pre-monsoon period, about 73.53 per cent of samples were within the permissible limit, while 26.47 per cent exceeded it. In the post-monsoon period, compliance remained nearly similar, with 72.95 per cent of samples meeting the standard and 27.05 per cent exceeding it. Meanwhile, the Arsenic contamination in groundwater has been reported in several Indian states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. But it continued to pose a serious health hazard in the Indo-Gangetic alluvial belt, with major contributions from West Bengal, Bihar, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Assam. Punjab reported 9.1 per cent pre-monsoon and 9.5 per cent post-monsoon exceedance, placing it among the significant contributors despite wide variations between districts. Due to high Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) irrigation water could lead to alkalinity buildup, soil degradation, and declining crop yields if left unmanaged. As this index determines whether irrigation water can damage soil structure and long-term land productivity, as 11.27 per cent of groundwater samples nationally exceeded the permissible limit of 2.5 meq/L, indicating sodicity hazards in several areas. The highest in Delhi at 51.11 per cent followed by Uttarakhand 41.94 per cent, Andhra Pradesh 26.87 per cent, Punjab 24.60 per cent and Rajasthan 24.42 per cent. The other parameter was Electrical Conductivity, which is a marker of water salinity, and topped the list with 47.12 per cent, followed by Delhi 33.33 per cent, Haryana 0.59 per cent and Gujarat 18.28 per cent recorded the highest percentages of samples above the BIS permissible limit of 3000 S/cm. Meanwhile, Punjab recorded 7.01 per cent of samples above the limit. Due to excessive saline water, agricultural productivity is affected. The report concluded that the Central Groundwater Board has undertaken an extensive assessment of groundwater quality across India during the Pre-Monsoon and Post-Monsoon periods of 2024, covering approximately 5368 monitoring wells. About 71.67 per cent of samples complied with BIS standards, while 28.32 per cent exceeded permissible limits for one or more parameters.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah: Olympian backstroke swimmer Maana Patel expressed her excitement as her home city was officially announced as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishing a strong foundation for sports infrastructure in Gujarat. Ahmedabad was formally ratified as the host of the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking the return of the multisports event in the country after 20 years. The decision confirms that the worlds most populous nation will stage the landmark edition of the Games, after delegates of the 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories ratified Indias bid at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow. I feel very proud that Ahmedabad will be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030. India last hosted the CWG in 2010 in New Delhi, and now, after 20 years, my city will get the opportunity to host such a major multi-sport event. It truly makes me excited to see the city I grew up in achieve something so big, Maana, who was the first Indian female swimmer to qualify for the Olympics in 2021, told IANS. Modi ji had already laid a strong foundation for sports in Gujarat during his time as the Chief Minister. He launched Khel Mahakumbh, which has now evolved into Khelo India. His contribution to Gujarat - whether in sports development or women empowerment - has always been immense. Because of these efforts, many girls were encouraged to take up sports, she added. As a result, Ahmedabad has seen remarkable sports infrastructure growth, including the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex. The city now offers excellent sports facilities, and it makes me genuinely proud to see how far weve come, Maana further said. In September this year, Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Built at a cost of Rs 825 crore, the state-of-the-art facility is spread over 21 acres. It is equipped with an aquatics stadium, a sports centre of excellence, an indoor multi-sports arena, outdoor courts, a community sports centre, and a Fit India zone. It also offers opportunities for training, coaching, fitness, and yoga for both athletes and citizens. In addition to confirming the hosts for 2030, Commonwealth Sport also confirmed that 15 to 17 sports will feature at Ahmedabad 2030. Recently concluded Sport Programme Review outlined the sports which will feature at the Commonwealth Games: Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball and Boxing. 'Road to hell is paved with good intentions': Congress slams government over new Aravalli definition
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday slammed the Modi government over the Environment Ministry reportedly recommending a new definition of Aravalli Hills, saying this will have very grave environmental and public health consequences, and calls for an immediate review. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh claimed that the new definition is meant to restrict mining but in reality would mean that 90 per cent of the Aravalli Hills would not be counted as Aravalli any more. The Aravalli Hills extend from Delhi through Haryana and Rajasthan to Gujarat. Over the years they have been devastated by mining, construction, and other activities in violation of all regulations and laws, the former environment minister said on X. Now it appears that this sensitive and sprawling ecosystem will be subject to another severe blow, he said. According to an informed news report in the Indian Express, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has recommended to the Supreme Court a new definition of Aravalli Hills. This definition is meant to restrict mining but in reality will mean that 90% of the Aravalli Hills will not be counted as Aravalli any more, Ramesh said. Evidently, the Supreme Court has accepted this revised definition, he said. This is bizarre and will have very grave environmental and public health consequences. It calls for an immediate review, he said. The road to hell is indeed paved with good intentions, Ramesh said. The Congress leader also shared the screenshot of the media report which said that on November 20, the Supreme Court accepted the recommendations of a Union Environment Ministry panel on the definition of Aravalli Hills ostensibly to restrict mining. As part of the definition, any landform that is at an elevation of 100 metres or more above the local relief will be considered as part of Aravalli Hills along with its slopes and adjacent land. The media report claimed that what the panel did not mention was that by this definition, more than 90% of the Aravali Hills will not be counted as Aravalli anymore and be potentially open to mining and construction with severe environmental ramifications, including the quality of air in the National Capital Region.

Sai Sudharsan Added To TN Squad For Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: India batter Sai Sudharsan was added to the senior squad of Tamil Nadu by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) on Wednesday for the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) in Ahmedabad, giving the team a much-needed boost following a slow start to the season. After scoring 15 and 14 in a difficult debut series that ended in a 408-run thrashing, the 24-year-old, who played in India's most recent Test loss in Guwahati that sealed a 0-2 series loss to South Africa, returns to domestic T20 action. Only Yashpal Sharma's 13 off 157 against Australia in 1981 is slower than Sudharsan's lengthy innings of 14 off 139 balls against South Africa in the current second Test at Guwahati, which is India's second-slowest Test knock involving at least 100 balls. Sudharsan's inclusion is anticipated to bolster an inexperienced batting unit looking for early momentum after Tamil Nadu lost to Rajasthan by six wickets on Wednesday to start their Group D campaign. Ahmedabad is familiar to the left-hander because it is the city where he established his T20 reputation with the Gujarat Titans, for whom he was a standout opener. With 759 runs from 15 games at a strike rate of 156.17, Sudharsan had a breakout IPL 2025 season and won the Orange Cap. Tamil Nadu will be hoping he can carry this form into their SMAT campaign. India's national T20 championship will have six emerging sides, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, aiming for the plate division honours alongside the opportunity to be promoted to the elite category. After row over Union minister's remarks, CM Fadnavis says he'll urge PM to change name of IIT Bombay
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday that he will write to the Prime Minister requesting him to replace Bombay with Mumbai in the name of the city's Indian Institute of Technology. This comes after a row over Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh's remarks during his speech at IIT Bombay on Monday. Singh had remarked on a lighter note, As far as IIT Bombay is concerned, thank god it still has this name. You have not changed it to Mumbai. So that's another compliment to you. And also true for Madras. It remains IIT Madras. Singh also lauded IIT Bombay, which was set up in 1958, saying the institute had been a very consistent partner of the Department of Science and Technology. Opposition parties, particularly the Raj Thackeray-led MNS, subsequently raked up a controversy, saying that BJP leaders never let go of any opportunity to insult Marathi, Mumbai and Maharashtra. In response, CM Fadnavis said that BJP leader Rambhau Naik was instrumental in getting Bombay renamed as Mumbai. We are working to remove the remaining references to Bombay in Mumbai. I personally will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Human Resource Ministry to replace the name of IIT Bombay with IIT Mumbai. Some people raise the issue for the sake of controversy and forget their children's school names. They never make a complaint and write to change the name of their children's schools, Fadnavis said. Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray's children studied in Bombay Scottish and Don Bosco English medium schools in Mumbai. Raj Thackeray alleged that the BJP-led Union government planned to bring Mumbai under the control of the Centre like they planned with Chandigarh. With the Mumbai Metropolitan region expansion plan, they are connecting it to Gujarat so that projects can be taken away easily from Maharashtra to Gujarat. Singh's statement has brought out a hidden truth about what the BJP and its leaders think about Mumbai and Maharashtra. Singh is from Jammu, but still he stirred this controversy just to get pats from two Gujarati leaders, the MNS leader said. Bombay was officially renamed Mumbai in 1995 by the state government to honour the local goddess Mumbadevi after whom the city is named, and to shed the remnants of British colonial rule.

West Bengal CM says SIR exercise is putting BLOs under stress, expresses solidarity with them
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, once again, slammed the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the plights of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls exercise in the State. Mamata, while delivering her speech in a state government programme to commemorate the Constitution Day on Red Road in the city today, said, BLOs have died in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Bengal. The ongoing SIR exercise in nine states and three Union Territories has landed a large number of BLOs, the main workforce in the electoral rolls revision drive, in stress and strain. 'How many more need to die for SIR?': Mamata attacks EC after another BLO dies by suicide in Bengal They had to wait for 48 hours at the CEO's office to get themselves heard. Why so much arrogance? BLOs are dying. Wont they speak out? How can a work that requires three years be completed in two months? the Chief Minister asked. Her crusade against the ECI remained unabated as the national poll panel wrote a strong letter to Manoj Agarwal, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, expressing serious concern with the safety and security of the state CEO, Manoj Agarwal, other senior officers and staff in his office at B B D Bag. A section of agitating BLOs backed by her party, Trinamool Congress, gheraoed Agarwals chamber for about 30 hours since Monday afternoon, protesting against the inhuman workload generated by the SIR-related duties like distributions and collections of enumeration forms during door-to-door visits. ECI expresses concern over security of officers, staff at Bengal CEO's office; seeks action taken report Trinamool Congress is attributing many of the Bengal deaths to suicides driven by SIR-related stress. On Tuesday, an assistant teacher in Uttar Pradeshs Jaunpur district, serving as a BLO in Khempur gram panchayat, died by suicide. Last week, Mamata wrote to the chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, urging him to stop the SIR exercise in Bengal. She had claimed that 28 lives, including three BLOs, have already been lost in the State due to work pressure and stress caused by the SIR drive. Now, we must protect the valuable guidance that the Constitution provides, especially when democracy is at stake, when secularism is in an endangered situation, when federalism is being bulldozed, at this critical time, Mamata wrote on her X. Indias ODI World Cup Winners Poised To Have Big Payday In 2026 WPL Mega Auction
ODI World Cup: While the euphoria of Indias historic Womens ODI World Cup triumph in Navi Mumbai still energises fans, the aftermath has sparked a shimmering windfall. The championship-winning Indian team members are featured in high-profile endorsements for various products, invited to numerous universities for thought-provoking speeches, appear as special guests on talk shows, and are seen sporting radiant smiles on various posters. Hence, it wont come as a surprise if the 2026 Womens Premier League (WPL) mega auction, set to be held in New Delhi on Thursday, sees several World Cup-winning players earn a big payday. With several World Cup-winning players back in the pool, all five franchises will be devising strategies to secure these marquee players and then set the stage for them to command premium pay checks. Among the ten World Cup-winning members in the auction pool, Deepti Sharma (base price of Rs. 50 lakh) and Renuka Singh Thakur (base price of Rs. 40 lakh) are listed in the marquee set. Deepti, who was the Player of the Tournament in both the ODI World Cup and WPL 2025, will draw the attention of all teams. While her previous franchise, UP Warriorz (with the highest purse of Rs. 14.5 crore) still holds four Right-To-Match (RTM) options, Deeptis consistent match-winning performances will ensure that she wont be a cheap buy at the auction. Kranti Gaud, Deeptis teammate at UPW in WPL 2025 and a World Cup winner, will also attract interest from many teams, thanks to her rare skill set: being a capped India fast bowler. Left-arm spinner N Sree Charani, the second-highest wicket-taker for India in the World Cup win, will also attract massive bids after previously being a steal buy for Delhi Capitals, who enter the auction with the least purse (Rs. 5.7 crore). Other World Cup winners who will keep teams interested are Renuka Singh Thakur, Harleen Deol, Sneh Rana, Radha Yadav, Uma Chetry, Arundhati Reddy, and Pratika Rawal (assuming she has recovered sufficiently from the ankle injury that sidelined her from the World Cup knockouts). The auction will feature a total of 277 players going under the hammer to fill 73 slots including 23 reserved for overseas players. It is also understood that the five franchises are likely to spend more on batters, pacers, or overseas all-rounders to strengthen their batting and bowling options. The accelerated phase in the auction will begin after player number 68. Teams will be asked for their choice of players and names will be duly called out. In all, a lot of the players who got released will get picked, said a WPL insider to IANS. Apart from Deepti and Renuka, the marquee set features several high-profile names, including Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy, Sophie Ecclestone, Laura Wolvaardt, Sophie Devine, and Amelia Kerr, ensuring intense bidding battles among teams for these proven match-winners. Outside the marquee set, players of significant interest include Nadine de Klerk, Pheobe Litchfield, Kiran Navgire, Alana King, Jess Jonassen, Georgia Voll, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, and Kashvee Gautam, who has just returned to action via the ongoing U23 T20 championship after a six-month layoff. The interest in players like Prathyusha Challuru and Anuja Patil, who have previously played for India and performed on the domestic circuit, will also be notable in franchise discussions. Regarding the teams' needs at the auction, two-time champions Mumbai Indians possess a well-rounded batting line-up led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, complemented by proven all-rounders such as Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Amanjot Kaur, along with uncapped wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini. They could target an experienced keeper-batter behind the stumps to add depth. Although Yastika Bhatia has registered for the auction, it will be interesting to see if MI buy her back, considering she has had an ACL surgery. MI's priority will be strengthening the bowling attack with specialised options and securing key Indian spin bowlers. The 2024 champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, are expected to target a big-hitting opener to partner captain Smriti Mandhana at the top, while also prioritising the acquisition of an experienced seamer, including the possibility of bringing back Renuka, to strengthen their bowling unit. Among overseas options, Laura and Georgia are seen as strong candidates to support Smriti at the top. The franchise holds a Right-To-Match card for an uncapped player, which could be used to re-acquire leg-spin all-rounder Prema Rawat, who broke into the India A setup this year. Three-time runners-up Delhi Capitals are clearly aiming for a solid opener to partner Shafali Verma, while their retained players, Jemimah Rodrigues and Niki Prasad, along with pace-bowling all-rounders Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp, provide balance in the middle order. DC is expected to focus on strengthening its spin department and adding an experienced wicketkeeper. If DC doesnt buy back Meg, they could select either Alyssa or Laura, both of whom not only fill the opening slot but also stand out as strong captaincy contenders. Gujarat Giants, who reached the WPL playoffs for the first time this year, have three RTM cards available, though they can use them to buy back three Indian players after retaining the Australian duo of Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney. In that case, Harleen, Kashvee, Priya Mishra, and Tanuja Kanwer emerge as likely options to buy back through RTM. At the mega auction, GG will also prioritise strengthening its lower order by purchasing experienced Indian batters and bolstering a bowling attack that was somewhat vulnerable last season. Meanwhile, UP Warriorz enter with a near blank slate and the largest purse, giving them considerable flexibility to rebuild after finishing at the bottom of the table last season. With batting inconsistencies and a misfiring bowling unit still fresh in memory, UPW may focus on acquiring experienced Indian players and securing overseas match-winners, while also seeking a new captain. Also Read: Live Cricket Score As the focus is sharply on the mega auction floor and franchises arrive with their strategies to secure marquee names, the stage is set for newly crowned World Cup winners and other high-profile players to attract record bids. Gujarat model: Note on PDS aimed at making system cashless submitted
NEW DELHI: At the request of the Centre, the Gujarat government submitted a concept note outlining a model aimed at making the public distribution system (PDS) cashless and more transparent. However, implementation of this Gujarat model of a transparent and efficient PDS has encountered opposition from the national fair price shop (FPS) dealers association, which perceives it as a strategy to eliminate PDS dealerships. The concept note, seen by this newspaper, outlines how the state government will issue central bank digital currency (CBDC)/ e-rupee or digital food coupons to beneficiaries, enabling cashless, Aadhaar-authenticated delivery at FPS. The Gujarat food, civil supplies & consumer affairs department has designed the model to minimise manual intervention, enhance accountability, strengthen beneficiary safeguards and improve financial transparency. The note was shared with Sanjeev Chopra, secretary, Centres department of food and public distribution (DFPD), on November 24. These digital coupons will allow beneficiaries to purchase rations from any FPS, and it is a prerequisite step to convert the scheme into a cashless or direct benefit transfer, said Biswambhar Basu, general secretary, All India Fair Price Shop Dealers Federation (AIFPS). The current PDS system is that beneficiaries visit the FPS and use biometrics to authenticate and receive rations. In its note, Gujarat reiterated its commitment to work closely with DFPD to implement innovative, technology-driven solutions for strengthening the PDS. The note states that Gujarat proposed to issue 7 coupons every month 2 for central commodities, i.e. wheat and rice, and 5 for state commodities such as tur dal, edible oil, salt and sugar.
ASI firms up framework to end excavation delays
NEW DELHI: Learning from years of stalled excavations and delayed reports, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is preparing a structured framework to ensure that major archaeological projects no longer hinge on individual officers or collapse when they are transferred or retire. The proposed guidelines, officials said, will clearly define objectives for every excavation, establish continuity regardless of personnel changes, and impose stricter accountability across branches. At present, excavations often run on the initiative of individual officials. When one leaves, there is no coordination and the next person starts work in a completely different way, an official familiar with the plan said. These are long-term projects and must have defined goals. Once the mechanism is in place, archaeological work, excavations or museum projects will continue seamlessly, and the scope can be expanded or reduced as needed. A key focus of the overhaul is fixing the weak link that has plagued ASI for decades, the preparation and publication of excavation reports. In several cases, findings have not been submitted to ASI headquarters for years after fieldwork ended. To address this, ASI plans to enforce firm deadlines. Excavators have been told to submit a primary report within three months of completing fieldwork, supported by fortnightly updates. Analytical components that require laboratory testing can follow later. Annual reports, officials said, must also be filed on schedule and full project reports completed within three years. The Survey currently has over 20 active excavation sites, supported by six dedicated excavation branches in Nagpur, Delhi, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Vadodara and Mysore. Recent work includes the fortified ancient city at Vadnagar in Gujarat, Rakhigarhi in Haryana, and Hastinapur in Uttar Pradesh. To avoid the chronic post-fieldwork gaps that slow down documentation, excavation teams will now be required to remain on site for additional days after digging concludes. Surveyors, archaeologists, photographers, they come from different units. Once they disperse, coordination becomes difficult. The team must stay together to finish preliminary records and compile the basic report, an official said. Between 2014 and 2024, the Modi government allocated Rs 9,652 crore to ASI, including Rs 63.27 crore specifically for excavations. Major digs during this period, Rakhigarhi in Haryana, Sinauli in Uttar Pradesh, Keezhadi in Tamil Nadu, remain without published official reports. Excavators have presented findings at conferences and in interviews, but the formal documentation is still absent. In 2023, ASI told a Rajya Sabha standing committee it had received 11 reports from Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, but all of them were still under vetting. The committee urged ASI to expedite the process and make the reports public. New mandate ASI has over 20 active excavation sites, supported by six dedicated branches. Excavators to submit a primary report within three months of completing fieldwork, supported by fortnightly updates. Excavation teams required to remain on site after digging concludes, to finish preliminary records and compile basic report. Annual reports to be filed on schedule and full project reports completed within 3 yrs. From 2014 to 2024, the Modi govt allocated Rs 9,652 cr to ASI, including Rs 63.27 cr for excavations.
Dont file FIRs, please' says comedian Abish Mathew
Long before he became one of the most recognisable comedy voices, Abish Mathew was a radio jockey in Delhi a young man with an instinct for humour. From there came the YouTube hits, comedy clubs, the specials, the tours, Comicstaan, Son of Abish, improv sets, sketch videos, and an evolving stage persona that refuses to sit still. Abish has never been just a stand-up; he is a host, writer, performer and creator who is constantly evolving. He recently brought his latest set, Abish Mathew and His Many Talents: Part Two, to Kochi. We sat down to chat the next morning after the performance. When I walked into the venue, he was already hunched over his iPad, stylus in hand replaying the previous nights recording and marking every response. Where the audience laughed, where they chuckled or applauded, and where a joke didnt quite land. It was an almost surgical review of the art of laughter and perhaps the most fitting snapshot of a performer who is constantly fine-tuning himself. In this chat, Abish opened up about discovering clowning, the science of humour, the chilling effect on comedy today, and the emotional weight of drawing from personal history. Excerpts: What do you prefer calling yourself artist, comedian, something else? I honestly dont know. My music teacher once told me that you dont define your own genre; the audience tells you what you are. Your job is to create in the moment. So, we are nothing but references of things we love. And if we merge them, we become unique. If someone calls me an artist, Ill happily take it. But I personally prefer freelancer as that identity keeps me accountable. It reminds me of discipline, deadlines and employment. In any creative field, you need one for the kitchen, one for the soul. Art should feed your spirit, but something must also pay the bills. Ive been fortunate that my passion became my profession, but timing mattered. If YouTube hadnt happened when it did, or if that whole wave with AIB, Vir (Das), hadnt come at the time, I might have ended up in an advertising agency. What brought you to clowning? I had first discovered clowning years ago through Cirque du Soleil on YouTube. David Shiner, Mila Uesoft clowns who could make an audience the centre of the show without saying a word. As I grew up, I found stand-up, later improv, and forgot about clowning. A workshop in Mumbai by Pyotr Sikovar (Furioso) re-ignited something. His idea of the flop blew my mind going with an idea, letting it fail, and staying in the failure. The audience roots for you precisely because you never succeed. The power dynamic is beautiful. Abish during a performance You recently went to Norway to explore clowning. How was that experience? The Norway Clown Camp was a month-long residency on a farm with 1520 people from around the world. Philip Burgers (Dr Brown) taught us. He is someone Id admired for years. Seeing him in person and learning the importance of making eye contact with the audience, being vulnerable and uncomfortable all of it changed something in me. I feel more fearless on stage now. Is this why clowning has become important to you? Absolutely. Clowning forces me to keep quiet. Thats my new challenge can I make an audience laugh in silence? But even clowning will flirt with political incorrectness. The goal is not to test limits but to understand: both the comedian and the audience are flawed. You also study comedy. Do you like calling yourself a nerd? Im a comedy nerd, 100%. Before I touched the stage, I was obsessively researching comedy. I get very excited when someone writes a bit, and I become curious to know how did they think of it. From all the interactions I have had with other comedians, I have realised that, many of the jokes werent written on paper they happened serendipitously maybe because of something an audience member said or it just came to them as a thought on stage. Is that true for you too? Yes. Earlier, I believed a joke had to be perfect before I went on stage. Now I write diligently, but I also allow discovery. I talk to myself in the mirror, rehearse jokes and review every set. If something works accidentally, I make a note of it so its not lost. Recently, a joke about men and women dancing or moving their pelvis differently at sangeet ceremonies worked three times in a row. I dont know if its a good joke yet but Ill explore it until it proves itself or fails. Do concepts like theories of humour influence you? Very much. Superiority theory, surprise theory... Recently, I learnt about benign violations. It was introduced to me by Viggo Venn (who won Britains Got Talent), a world-renowned clown. Benign violation is humour that violates softly, just enough to be funny but not offensive. Like the pelvis joke. My hope is that even my parents would laugh that is the sweet spot. Push beyond that, and it stops being benign; it just becomes crass. In recent years, comedians have been targeted frequently. Do you feel its becoming more difficult to be a comedian today? Yes. Theres the chilling effect.Someone explained it to me like this: once, being homosexual was illegal, but the police wont come to your house to check. Still, the fear shaped who you are outside your house. That same chilling effect has seeped into comedy. Some comedians boldly say, I will talk anyway, and you admire that courage. You aspire to get there. But if you dont have financial, legal or network support, especially in India, what happens to you? Its absolutely okay to disagree with something I said or did. Just dont file FIRs, please. Vent it out. Come threaten me on Instagram DM, and I will understand. Or maybe block you (laughs). Its not just comedians the audience has changed too. Theres this cultural shift of, If I cant say it, then you cant say it. Most people catch themselves doing it and stop themselves from acting on it. Ideally, scrutiny should go towards hate speech not jokes but thats not how it plays out. So you end up doing family-friendly humour even when you want to talk about bigger things. Do you feel freer in Kerala? 100%. The audience here shares a similar social and political mindset. Not identical views just an openness. We grew up not understanding politics, but this is the age where we finally speak about the country a little bit, right? There are comics who do it more confidently than I do, and I hope to get there. Kerala gives me that space. Also, Kerala laughs at political humour in a way few other places do. Its cultural. I grew up in Delhi, but I used to watch Munshi. Political commentary has been part of humour here for decades. So there were bold artists before us. When I know the audience is my audience, whether its Kerala or Gujarat, I can be open. If its a corporate gig or a festival, where I dont know whos coming, I have to be more careful, not just for me, but for the organisers too. Youve performed a song in one of your sets, which revealed the story behind your name. A combination of your older brothers names (Anish+Binish). There was so much grief in it (since Binish passed away before you were born), how did that song come about? During the lockdown, I was alone and had creative space. In that silence I discovered things about myself. I realised that writing lyrics or rhymes makes you more intentional than when youre just clicking keys on a keyboard. So I wrote a draft and almost forgot about it. Then Spoken Fest asked me to perform. A poet-artist friend, Shantanu, heard it and told me to develop it. So I did a spoken-word version. Later, when I did Abish Mathew and His Many Talents, I included a 10-minute piece of that, because quite a few people encouraged me to do so. It didnt fit a stand-up show; its quite a downer. So I added it somewhere in the middle. That piece makes me emotional. There are times I almost choke up. I had to practice to control it because if I cried on stage repeatedly, it would look like self-obsession. The special Im releasing ends with that song and the guitar part I added mirrors how I felt. Whats next? I am working on a new bit, a special in development. I do want to talk about what this love is. what it is like to be married, why does one need to be married. But I haven't gotten there yet. I have just been able to get to a point where I am talking about my experiences of love. Now that might become a separate special, before that I need to spend a little bit more time with myself on these things. Now, being married twice, theres insight there. Life is very different now. I see myself as two different people with two different people. And I think: Oh my God, Abish. You are the problem! I want to talk about my married life through my lens. It will be challenging but worth it. It will be about me, my insecurity, which I know many men will relate to. Thats what I want to tackle in this bit.

Gujarat faces fresh political storm as ex-cabinet Minister Chavda highlights unemployment crisis
AHMEDABAD: Former BJP cabinet minister Jawahar Chavda has triggered a political storm in Gujarat politics with a fiery 'Employment Assistance Campaign', unleashing a direct attack on the States unemployment crisis, paper leaks, and systemic failures. His videos, interactions with youngsters, and bold admission, stating, we too have failed somewhere, have electrified Saurashtras political ground, triggering fresh tremors inside an already divided BJP ahead of the 2027 polls. Chavda becoming suddenly active, vocal, and unfiltered has created a fresh narrative in Gujarats political landscape. For months, Chavda, who has long been uneasy within the BJP, remained on the sidelines. Now, he has detonated the new campaign on unemployment, and every sentence he utters is landing as a political punch. His re-entry began with a video message on social media where he declared, Enough is enough, talk will not work. This single line signalled the storm he was about to unleash. On November 24, Chavda returned with another hard-hitting video, this time sitting with unemployed youngsters, listening to their rage, and amplifying their anguish. Gujarat: BJP Gen Sec meets family of late ex-CM Rupani amid internal rifts, sparks political speculation One after another, he targeted the government machinery, linking mismanagement to frustration and frustration to the simmering political heat in Saurashtra. In his detailed video address on social media, Chavda said, Today I am presenting my dialogue echoing pains, opinions and wounds of thousands of young unemployed brothers and sisters over the last eight months. Unemployment has spread across every class, society, caste and region. There is no coordination in departments, no system that works. Even big companies fail to give jobs to locals, and on top of that, they behave rudely. He blamed paper leaks, faulty recruitment, and wrong selection methods for a deepening sense of betrayal among Gujarats youth. He did not spare himself either, This is a social responsibility in which we all have failed somewhere, he boldly admitted. With this candour, Chavda began his political march, announcing plans to visit taluka headquarters from September 1, 2025, collecting representations of unemployed youth and women. His campaign doesnt merely highlight problems; it provides a stage for unheard voices. The anger of unemployed women, he noted, is even sharper. Drawing from his earlier BPL assistance drives, he said, It is painful that even today employment remains a serious struggle for women. Educated daughters do not get opportunities as corruption blocks their path. Widowed mothers are forced into helplessness. Even in cities, women are denied equal wages and fair chances. The campaign has erupted right when the Junagadh BJP is cracking under internal factionalism, visible in both the Lok Sabha and Visavadar by-elections. Chavdas sudden activism on a politically explosive issue is seen as a strategic, calibrated move. Political insiders argue he is preparing for a 2027 comeback, building a strong grassroots base while tightening pressure on the BJP, where he has been increasingly disenchanted. Chavdas political journey has always been marked by sharp turns. Being a four-time Congress MLA (1990, 2007, 2012, 2017), he dramatically crossed over to the BJP in 2019, defeated Congresss Arvind Ladani in a bypoll, and became a cabinet minister in the Rupani government. However, cracks appeared last year after he publicly countered Porbandar MP and Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on social media. Now, with the unemployment storm he has stirred, Chavda has placed himself back in the spotlight, forcing both BJP and Congress to reassess the political battlefield of Saurashtra.
A young Pakistani couple, Popat and Gauri, attempted to elope to India. They fled their village and crossed the border on foot. Air India has cancelled 13 flights since Monday after Indias aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), issued an advisory instructing carriers to avoid routes affected by volcanic ash. The airline also began precautionary inspections of aircraft that had flown over potentially impacted regions. Akasa Air also cancelled several flights, including services to Jeddah, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, as the ash plume spread across parts of the Middle East and South Asia. An official told PTI that at least 7 international flights, including arrivals and departures, were cancelled and 12 international flights were delayed at the Delhi airport due to the impact of the volcanic ash plumes. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the ash cloud is now drifting eastward and is expected to exit Indian airspace by around 7:30 pm on Tuesday, moving toward China. Forecast models indicated that the plume may influence skies over Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, with the potential to temporarily worsen pollution levels in these regions. The disruption follows the eruption of the Hayli Gubbi shield volcano in Ethiopias Afar region on Sunday. Dormant for over 10,000 years, the volcano produced a massive ash column rising roughly 14 km (45,000 ft) into the atmosphere. The plume subsequently travelled eastwards across the Red Sea, moving over Yemen, Oman, Pakistan and parts of India. (With inputs from PTI)

Delhi worst in PM2.5 pollution; 447 districts breach national air quality norm: Report
Delhi recorded the highest PM2.5 pollution levels in India, with an annual average concentration of 101 micrograms per cubic metre, 2.5 times the national limit and 20 times the WHO guideline, according to a new satellite-based assessment by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Chandigarh logged the second-highest PM2.5 level at 70 micrograms per cubic metre between March 2024 and February 2025, followed by Haryana (63) and Tripura (62). Several other states, including Assam (60), Bihar (59), West Bengal (57), Punjab (56), Meghalaya (53) and Nagaland (52), also surpassed the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 40 micrograms per cubic metre. Overall, 447 of 749 districts, about 60 per cent breached the annual PM2.5 limit. Pollution was highly concentrated in specific regions, with Delhi and Assam each contributing 11 of the 50 most polluted districts. Bihar and Haryana followed, with seven each. Other states in the top tier included Uttar Pradesh (4), Tripura (3), Rajasthan (2) and West Bengal (2). In several regions, every monitored district exceeded national norms, including Delhi, Assam, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Jammu & Kashmir. Many others had an overwhelming majority of districts above the threshold, such as Bihar (37 of 38), West Bengal (22 of 23), Gujarat (32 of 33), Nagaland (11 of 12), Rajasthan (30 of 33) and Jharkhand (21 of 24). Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep were excluded due to insufficient monitoring data. (With inputs from PTI)

Dec 14 rally against vote theft a pure Congress show
NEW DELHI: INDIA bloc constituents will not take part in the December 14 rally being organised by the Congress to protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI)s alleged vote theft. Party leaders insist that it will be a purely Congress affair and the decision to go solo was firmed up at the AICC review meeting early last week. A senior Congress leader told this newspaper that the rally at Ramlila Maidan would be completely a Congress show aimed at conveying that the party has consistently been at the forefront of exposing irregularities in the electoral process. We have been campaigning on this issue for months and has collected five crore signatures from across the country against vote chori. The party has invested its organisational strength on the matter. This protest is specifically our initiative, the leader said, adding that the party is expecting a huge turnout driven by state units that have been asked to mobilise workers from constituencies where alleged irregularities have surfaced. According to sources, the decision was finalised during the AICC review meeting chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge with key office-bearers from 12 states and Union Territories (UT), where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls is underway. The meeting was attended by former party president Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretaries, state unit chiefs, Congress Legislature Party leaders and secretaries of 12 states and UTs where the SIR is underway. The states and UTs are Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal will go to polls in 2026. Phase 2 of the SIR exercise began on November 4 and will continue till December 4. The party has alleged that the EC is now a blatantly partisan player that is completely destroying the very concept of a level-playing field for all political parties. After the EC rolled out the second phase of the SIR on October 27, opposition-ruled states Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Kerala have escalated their objections to the ECs move by seeking legal options. Despite being a key constituent of the INDIA bloc and a primary opposition party, the Congress had not convened a joint meeting or crafted a coordinated strategy with its alliance partners on the SIR issue until now. On Sunday, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the EC, linking the ongoing SIR directly to the deaths of 16 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) over nearly three weeks. Gandhi alleged that the ECs rushed, paperwork-heavy process is a deliberate ploy to harass citizens and enable voter fraud. Decision finalised during AICC review meeting According to sources, the decision was finalised during the AICC review meeting chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge with key office-bearers from 12 states and Union Territories (UT). The meeting was attended by former party president Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretaries, state unit chiefs, Congress Legislature Party leaders and secretaries of 12 states and UTs where the SIR is underway.

Five killed, 13 injured in bus crash near Kunjapuri temple in Uttarakhand
DEHRADUN: At least five pilgrims were killed in a road accident while returning from the historic Kunjapuri Temple in Uttarakhand's Tehri district on Monday. The incident occurred as the bus was returning from the Kunjapuri Devi Temple, located about 23 km from Rishikesh. Authorities confirmed five fatalities at the scene. Five people have tragically died in this accident, confirmed ASP J R Joshi of Tehri Garhwal. A total of 17 people were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were immediately dispatched to the location, where the bus reportedly fell approximately 70 meters into the ravine near Hindolakhal. Five teams from SDRF posts, including Dhalwala and Koti Colony, were immediately deployed to the site, stated SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi. The victims who sustained injuries are reportedly from various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Haryana. According to sources involved in the rescue, the accident happened when the bus lost control shortly after the driver started the engine. The vehicle, carrying 18 out of the total 28 passengers, subsequently plunged 80 to 100 meters into the gorge. Four women and one man were pronounced dead on arrival. Thirteen of the injured were initially taken to Suman Hospital in Narendranagar. Due to the severity of their condition, five critically injured passengers were later referred to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced care. Local officials, including Tehsildar Ayodhya Prasad Uniyal and Deputy Superintendent of Police Surendra Singh Bhandari, rushed to the site to oversee relief operations. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident. The news of the bus accident near Narendranagar Kunjapuri Temple in Tehri is extremely heartbreaking, the Chief Minister stated. I am in constant contact with local officials regarding the treatment of the injured. The Kunjapuri Temple is a revered spot, believed to be one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, where the chest (Kunj) of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen. Police have initiated an investigation into the exact cause of the horrific crash.
BJP Gen Sec meets family of late ex-CM Rupani amid internal rifts, sparks political speculation
AHMEDABAD: BJP National General Secretary B L Santosh on Monday became the first national leader to visit the former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's residence after the funeral-expense controversy, triggering political chatter across Saurashtra. The BJP's 22-minute closed-door meeting with Anjaliben Rupani has revived speculation of the Rupani familys re-entry into the BJP power structure and amplified whispers about internal fault lines. The BJPs high-profile Saurashtra zone meeting at Kamalam in Rajkot chaired by National General Secretary B L Santosh and Gujarat President Jagdish Vishwakarma was meant to project organisational unity ahead of crucial SIR-related political planning. Before stepping into the meeting, B L Santosh drove straight to the residence of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash. Santosh, along with Ratnakar and Vishwakarma, met with Anjali. The gesture signalled a recalibration of Delhis equation with the influential Rupani family. Rajkot city BJP president, considered aligned with the Bharat Boghra faction, was made to wait outside. Insiders said this move was deliberate, strategic and deeply symbolic. After the hushed meeting ended, Rishabh Rupani touched the feet of B L Santosh and Vishwakarma, a gesture that did not go unnoticed in local political circles. Sources say B L Santoshs real mission was to understand Anjalibens mind, and insiders insist he succeeded. Speculation is rife that the party may soon offer a key organisational role to a member of the Rupani family, a development that could reorder local power equations. This renewed engagement comes months after the most jarring controversy since Rupanis passing. After the former CMs state-level funeral on June 16, 2025 , traders who helped organise the procession revealed they were asked to collect the expenses from the Rupani family, not the BJP triggering public outrage and exposing deep internal fissures. During the dispute, city president repeatedly refused to comment, saying only that the matter will be taken to the high command. The silence was read as factional defensiveness, with the Rupani camp accusing the Boghra faction of sidelining them. Even during Amit Shahs recent Rajkot visit, old Rupani loyalists including Nitin Bhardwaj and Dhansukh Bhanderi were seen by his side, fuelling talk that Delhi still values the old guard. Political observers now believe B L Santoshs visit could mark the beginning of a strategic revival of this faction. Once, the Rupani group controlled key levers from the municipal corporation to organisational committees, but internal rifts had pushed them into a passive role. If they re-enter the field, insiders believe the BJP could consolidate its base ahead of local elections, especially with the Old Guard returning to action. However, Anjaliben Rupani dismissed all speculation with calm precision. There was no political discussion, she told the media. He just came for a condolence visit. It has been six months since Rupani Saheb passed away. She added And when asked whether she herself might become politically active, she answered sharply: We are party workers. We will do as the party says. Echoing her words, Rajkot BJP spokesperson Raju Dhruv clarified that the visit was purely emotional, adding: Vijaybhai was a former Chief Minister and a committed BJP worker. The party still feels his absence deeply. Santosh ji went only to console the family.
Another BLO found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence in Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: A 26-year-old BLO and Surat Municipal Corporation technical assistant, Dinkal Shingodawala, was found unconscious in her bathroom and later declared dead at a private hospital. With a gas geyser inside the bathroom, police officials indicated the possibility of gas inhalation or suffocation as the cause of death. However, BLO workload-related deaths statewide spark concerns. Off the cuff: During SIR exercise, BLOs find some blank columns hide painful memories Dinkal, who lived with her family in Olpad taluka, was serving as a technical assistant in Surat Municipal Corporations Varachha zone while also managing the additional responsibility of Booth Level Officer (BLO) for the ongoing SIR exercise. Frantic attempts were made to save her after she collapsed in her bathroom. Her family rushed her to a private hospital in Surat, but despite immediate treatment, the young officer succumbed within minutes, raising chilling questions over whether her death was just accidental. Lock BLOs inside your house, don't let them delete names from voter list: Jharkhand minister on SIR The administrative side projected a picture of a dedicated and exceptionally fast-working officer. Deputy Collector Neha Savani, defending the work conditions, said, BLO Dinkals work report was very good. She completed AIR tasks very quickly and had already achieved 45% of her assigned work. Her statements underline a critical contradiction, while officers insist there was no undue pressure. The tally of sudden BLO deaths is rising, with earlier cases involving suicides and heart attack-linked deaths among teachers. Police have registered a case of accidental death and sent the body for postmortem, a report that will determine whether this was a tragic household mishap or a preventable loss linked to systemic strain. Hasty SIR implementation reminiscent of demonetisation and Covid lockdown, says Congress on BLO deaths

Congress takes swipe at PM Modi as rupee nears 90 per USD amid steep decline
The Congress on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the rupees sharp depreciation against the US dollar, recalling his own remarks from 2013 when he had targeted the then UPA government over the currencys slide. The rupee opened at 89.46 against the dollar and later strengthened slightly to 89.17, gaining 49 paise from its previous close. On Friday, however, the currency had witnessed a dramatic plunge of 98 paise, ending the day at a lifetime low of 89.66. The fall was attributed to strong demand for the US dollar in the domestic forex market, heavy selling pressure in both local and global equities, and lingering uncertainties linked to global trade. Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh took a dig at the government on X, remarking that the rupee was in free fall and on the verge of breaching the 90-per-dollar mark. He also questioned whether the prime minister remembered his comments from July 2013, when as Gujarat chief minister, Modi had mocked the UPA for failing to protect the currency. The rupee continues its free fall in relation to the dollar. It is now about to breach the 90 rupees to the $ low. Does the PM recall what he himself had said in July 2013? pic.twitter.com/TQhP3afTUF Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) November 24, 2025 Sharing an old video clip from that period, Ramesh highlighted Modis remark, Look at how fast the rupee is falling. Sometimes it seems there is a competition between the rupee and the government in Delhi over whose dignity drops faster. Fridays slide marked the rupees steepest single-day fall in more than three years. The last comparable drop was on February 24, 2022, when the currency had fallen 99 paise against the dollar.
