Never knew Kashmir was so beautiful: First-time Yatris
Praise Valleys hospitality, beauty, spirit of brotherhood Srinagar, Jul 02: Yatri Niwas Pantha Chowk in Srinagar came alive with chants of Bam Bam Bhole, prayers and emotional scenes on Thursday as hundreds of first-time Shri Amarnath Yatra pilgrims arrived in the Valley, many of them overwhelmed by Kashmirs breathtaking beauty and warm hospitality. From elderly devotees to youngsters, the atmosphere at the Yatri Niwas reflected a unique blend of spirituality, excitement and relief as pilgrims prepared to proceed towards the holy cave shrine through the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. For many first-time yatris, the journeyturned intofar more than a religious pilgrimage. Alongside faith and devotion, pilgrims said they were deeply touched by the kindness, compassion and brotherhood shown by the people of Kashmir. We never knew Kashmir was so beautiful and peaceful, said Meena Sharma, a pilgrim from Delhi, while admiring the mist-covered mountains surrounding the city. We had heard many things before coming here, but after arriving, all our fears disappeared. The people here welcomed us warmly and guided us at every step. We are taking back beautiful memories from Kashmir. The arrival of pilgrims filled the Yatri Niwas with energy and devotion as volunteers, officials and security personnel assisted devotees with directions, registration and accommodation. Pushpa Devi, a first-time yatri from Madhya Pradesh, said the Valleys natural beauty and hospitality made the spiritual journey even more memorable. The mountains, cool breeze and peaceful atmosphere make this place feel heavenly, she said. But what touched us most was the behaviour of the people. Shopkeepers, volunteers and even strangers were helping pilgrims selflessly. We feel respected and cared for here. Several women pilgrims said they felt safe and comfortable during their stay in Kashmir and appreciated the support extended by locals and security personnel. As women travellers, safety is always a concern during long journeys, but here we felt completely comfortable, said Rekha Joshi, who arrived with a group from Gujarat. Locals offered us water, directions and help whenever needed. The police and volunteers are guiding everyone patiently. Another woman pilgrim from Maharashtra said the atmosphere in Kashmir had changed her perception of the Valley. We used to see Kashmir only in photographs and on television, but seeing it in person is a completely different feeling, she said. The greenery, rivers and mountains are mesmerising, and the warmth of people makes the experience even more special. Elderly yatris, too, shared emotional accounts of the assistance they received from residents and volunteers. At this age, travelling and climbing are not easy, said 70-year-old Om Prakash from Haryana. But young boys here helped elderly pilgrims with luggage and guided us patiently. Their humanity and respect touched my heart. Another elderly pilgrim from Rajasthan, Shanti Lal Sharma, said his perception of Kashmir had changed completely after visiting the Valley. We came here with devotion for Baba Amarnath, but we are also taking back love and affection from Kashmir, he said. People here welcomed us like family members. This journey will remain in our hearts forever. Pilgrims also praised the administration, Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies for maintaining smooth arrangements and ensuring a secure atmosphere. The arrangements are excellent, said Rajesh Tiwari from Uttar Pradesh. From Jammu to Srinagar, everything has been systematic. Security personnel are present everywhere and are helping devotees with patience and humility. However, many pilgrims urged authorities to simplify the registration process and increase the number of registration counters, particularly for senior citizens and first-time visitors unfamiliar with procedures. Registration should be easier and quicker, said a group of pilgrims from Punjab. Long queues become exhausting, especially for elderly people and women travelling with families. More counters and help desks would make the experience smoother. Some yatris also demanded separate assistance facilities for women and elderly devotees at registration and transit points. Despite minor inconveniences, pilgrims said the warmth of Kashmirs people and the spiritual atmosphere overshadowed every hardship. For us, this is no longer just a pilgrimage, said one elderly devotee while preparing for the onward journey. It has become a lesson in humanity, brotherhood and peace. The majority of the pilgrims urged the LG Manoj Sinha-led administration to set up additional registration counters so that every pilgrim can undertake a hassle-free journey. There should be more counters for registration, andcompletion offormalities should be donein a very speedy manner. After performing darshan at the holy cave shrine, we would like to visit tourist places and take a shikara ride in Dal Lake as well, a group of enthusiastic pilgrims said.

The beginning of the annual pilgrimage transformed parts of Kashmir into a scene of celebration and spirituality, with officials, volunteers and residents extending greetings and assistance to the devotees. Many pilgrims, especially first-time visitors, said the hospitality and arrangementshadexceeded their expectations. We had heard so much about Kashmir and the Amarnath Yatra, but the welcome we received here touched our hearts, said Neha Sharma, a pilgrim from Delhi travelling with her family.Theadministration has made excellent arrangements, and local people are treating us with kindness and respect. An elderly pilgrim from Gujarat, Mahesh Patel, said the arrangements from Jammu to Srinagar were smooth and highly organised. At this age, travelling long distances is difficult, but everything has been properly managed. Security forces are present everywhere, and medical teams are also available. We feel safe and comfortable, he said. Women pilgrims also praised the support extended by police personnel and volunteers. As women travellers, safety and facilities are our biggest concerns during such journeys, said Rekha Joshi from Maharashtra. But here, the police and officials are constantly guiding and helping us. Even the residents welcomed us warmly. It feels spiritually uplifting. Several yatris appreciated the efforts of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the administration for ensuringthesmooth conduct of the pilgrimage. The LG administration deserves appreciation for making such elaborate arrangements for lakhs of pilgrims, said Ramesh Kumar from Uttar Pradesh. Accommodation, transport, sanitation and security arrangements are all up to the mark. Pilgrims particularly lauded the role of Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF and other security agencies for maintaining a strong yet pilgrim-friendly atmosphere. The police personnel are not just providing security, they are also helping elderly pilgrims with directions, luggage and medical assistance, said a devotee from Rajasthan. Their behaviour has been very humble and cooperative. Another yatri from Punjab said the spiritual atmosphere in Kashmir made the journey even more memorable. The mountains, fresh air and devotion all around create a divine feeling. The warmth shown by Kashmiris has removed all fear and hesitation from our minds, he said. Officials said elaborate multi-layer security arrangements have been put in place for the 57-day pilgrimage, including surveillance, area domination, checkpoints, disaster response teams, medical camps and traffic management alongbothBaltal and Pahalgam routes. The annual Shri Amarnath Yatra, one of the countrys most significant Hindu pilgrimages, attracts lakhs of devotees every year who undertake the arduous journey to pay obeisance at the holy cave shrine housing the naturally formed ice Shivlingam. As the first batch of pilgrims moved towards Baltal and Pahalgam amid chants and prayers, the beginning of the yatra once again reflected Kashmirs enduring tradition of hospitality, communal harmony and spiritual coexistence.

Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20: Abhinav Manohar's explosive 12-ball 46 lit up a rain-hit match between Hubli Tigers and Mysore Warriors before persistent rain forced the match to be abandoned in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament on Thursday. Both teams walked away with one point each. Reduced to an eight-overs-a-side contest, Hubli Tigers posted 91/6, thanks largely to Manohar's breathtaking late assault. The Tigers were in trouble at 27/2 after five overs when rain interrupted play. Kruthik Krishna (23 off 19) and Hardik Raj (2 0ff 4) both retired out, leaving the innings in a precarious position. Manohar smashed two fours and six sixes in a whirlwind knock. The former Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad batter took a particular liking to Vyshak Vijaykumar, hammering 6, 4, 6, 6 in the sixth over before finishing with 6, 6, 4, 6 in the eighth. He eventually fell off the final ball of the innings after propelling the Tigers to a competitive total. The knock was a timely reminder of Manohar's big-hitting prowess, having struck 52 sixes for the Shivamogga Lions during the 2024 season, including three innings featuring nine maximums. Ritesh Bhatkal was the top performer for the Warriors, picking up two wickets for just 10 runs. The washout leaves Hubli Tigers fifth on the table with six points from seven matches, having registered two wins, three losses, and two no results. Mysore Warriors remain sixth with five points from seven matches, with two wins, four losses, and one no result. Bengaluru Blasters continue to lead the standings on 12 points, followed by Coastal Kings Mangaluru, Gulbarga Mystics, and Shivamogga Yodhas. Rs 14-crore daily livestock trade disrupted, Wazwan under stress
Srinagar, Jun 30:As the wedding season reaches its peak in Kashmir, a disruption in the supply of mutton has laid bare one of Jammu and Kashmir's biggest food security challenges - its heavy dependence on livestock imported from outside J&K. The immediate trigger is a dispute over alleged illegal charges imposed on livestock carriers passing through Punjab. However, the crisis has also highlighted the structural gap between Kashmir's appetite for mutton and its limited domestic production. Wholesale mutton dealers have suspended fresh imports of live sheep and goats after alleging that transporters are being forced to pay between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 per truck while crossing Punjab. General Secretary of the Wholesale Mutton Dealers Union, Mehraj Ganie, said traders have been compelled to halt supplies despite the ongoing marriage season. We have stopped importing livestock for the last few days. Whatever stock was available within Kashmir has almost been exhausted. Marriage functions are getting affected, but we have no option. Trucks carrying livestock are being charged Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 while passing through Punjab. These charges are illegal and have made transportation unviable, Ganie told Greater Kashmir. According to the union, Kashmir imports nearly 70 truckloads of livestock every day during the peak marriage season. Each truck carries sheep worth around Rs 20 lakh, taking the total value of daily livestock imports to nearly Rs 14 crore during this period. Most of these consignments originate from Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh before entering Jammu and Kashmir through Punjab. Any disruption along this route immediately affects wholesale markets, retailers and consumers across Kashmir. The issue has now reached the highest political level. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has written to the Punjab Government seeking immediate intervention to ensure the smooth movement of livestock transport vehicles through the state. In his letter, the Chief Minister urged Punjab authorities to prevent unauthorised levies and facilitate unhindered movement of livestock carriers, warning that the disruption could adversely affect traders as well as consumers in Jammu and Kashmir. While the current dispute revolves around transportation, it has once again exposed a long-standing weakness in J&K's livestock economy. J&K has consistently failed to produce enough mutton to meet local demand. Available government figures and industry estimates show that J&K produces around 30,000 to 32,000 tonnes of mutton annually, whereas consumption is estimated at 51,000 to 60,000 tonnes every year. This leaves a deficit of nearly 21,000 to 30,000 tonnes. In simple terms, local production meets only about half of the Valley's annual requirement, forcing J&K to depend on imports for roughly 40 to 50 percent of its mutton consumption. Official estimates released over the years present a remarkably consistent picture. Earlier figures showed annual consumption at around 51,000 tonnes against local production of 30,000 tonnes, requiring imports of nearly 21,000 tonnes. More recent estimates indicate that consumption has climbed to nearly 60,000 tonnes while production has remained almost stagnant at around 30,000 tonnes, widening the supply gap further. The shortfall is bridged through the import of live sheep and goats rather than processed meat. Industry estimates indicate that Jammu and Kashmir imports nearly 14 lakh sheep and goats every year. These animals are transported by road, slaughtered within J&K and supplied through local wholesale and retail markets. The annual value of these imports is estimated at around Rs 1400 crore, making mutton one of the largest food commodities imported into J&K. Economists say this also represents a significant outflow of wealth, as hundreds of crores of rupees leave J&K every year to purchase livestock from other states instead of circulating within the local rural economy. Ironically, J&K has one of India's strongest sheep-rearing traditions. J&K accounts for nearly 4.2 percent of the country's sheep population and ranks among the leading sheep-rearing regions. Annual mutton production stands at around 320 lakh kg, equivalent to approximately 32,000 tonnes. However, experts attribute the production deficit to low productivity, dependence on traditional breeds, slower genetic improvement and limited adoption of modern breeding technologies. While natural grazing resources are abundant, meat yield per animal has remained comparatively low. Research studies suggest that dependence on imported livestock is not a recent phenomenon. Academic analyses have shown that imports of sheep and goats have steadily increased since the early 2000s as local production failed to keep pace with rising consumption. The demand for mutton in Kashmir also differs from most other parts of the country.

Women's T20 WC: Australia Wary Of West Indies' Matthews Threat Ahead Of Semis Clash
T20 World Cup: As they gear up for Tuesday's semifinal clash in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup with the West Indies, World No. 1 Australia are wary of the threat posed by the West Indies, especially their captain Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin, said their top player, Ellyse Perry. Australia qualified for the knockout stages by finishing at the top of Group A, enjoying an imperious time of it in the groups, completing a fourth win from four with a record ICC Womens T20 World Cup chase to beat India at Lords on Sunday. In contrast, the Windies path to The Oval was rather more complicated. After winning their first three matches, the 2016 winner, the world's seventh-ranked side, fell to defeats to England and then Ireland in Bristol, the latter loss leaving them relying on New Zealand to lose their final game. Thankfully for Matthews and her team, hosts England pulled off a brilliant chase against the White Ferns, allowing the Windies to progress. Matthews knows as well as anyone what it takes to thrive against Australia. Three years ago, she scored a sensational 132 from just 64 balls as the Windies completed the biggest chase in the history of WT20I, reaching a target of 213 with a ball to spare. That came after she had scored an unbeaten 99 in the first game of a bilateral series Down Under, while Matthews 45-ball 66 paved the way for the West Indies to win this title a decade ago. Ellyse Perry is one of the few survivors from the Australian team that was beaten that day at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. And unsurprisingly, she was keen to focus on the future rather than that defeat, particularly after back-to-back half-centuries, her first and second at the ICC Womens T20 World Cup. She said, We dont want that kind of bad juju. I mean, what's that, 10 years ago? The game has changed so much in that period of time. And I just think, like you cannot pull things, can't even pull things from the last match because it's crazy how sport works. We've played each other quite a lot in the last couple of months. We actually had a tour to the West Indies earlier this year. We've played each other in a warm-up match, so we're quite familiar with each other at the moment. Theyve got some tremendously talented and dangerous players with a lot of experience. So it will be a great challenge for us. It's a quick turnaround, too, at a different venue, so I think we're really looking forward to it. As well as Matthews, Deandra Dottin is another potential match-winner for the Windies, who has not yet exploded in the competition. And Ash Gardner, part of a 100-run partnership with Perry in Australias win over India, knows exactly what a threat Dottin can be, having played with her for the Gujarat Giants. She added, The West Indies are a completely different threat (to India). They've got a lot of class and a lot of firepower within their team. Also, a lot of experience, obviously led brilliantly by Hayley Matthews, who is a player that can take away a game pretty quickly. But then you look at someone like Deandra Dottin, she's a threat in all three phases of the game. She's a fantastic player. I've had the privilege of playing with her, and seeing how she goes about her cricket, she's so fearless in the way that she approaches it, which sometimes can be quite scary because she can flick a switch pretty quickly. Also, a lot of experience, obviously led brilliantly by Hayley Matthews, who is a player that can take away a game pretty quickly. But then you look at someone like Deandra Dottin, she's a threat in all three phases of the game. Also Read: Live Cricket Score But then just to see the, I guess, inexperience as well that they've got and that rawness that they've got on their side. So yeah, they definitely pose a different threat. But luckily enough, we've played a series against them quite recently. So I guess we can do our homework in terms of how we're going to approach a new venue, a fast venue, one that's really nice to bat on. So for us, it's being able to do our homework really quickly because we've got a day to do it. And then a really quick turnaround, and then just get really excited for what the occasion is, she said. T20 World Cup: West Indies captain Hayley Matthews believes her side still has another level to reach as they prepare to face World No. 1 Australia in the semifinals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, insisting the Caribbean side will need their biggest stars to deliver if they are to upset the tournament favourites. Australia head into Tuesday's match at The Oval in strong form, having won all four of their group-stage games. They finished the group with a record run chase in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup against India at Lord's. West Indies took a much more dramatic path to reach the semifinals. They started the tournament with three straight wins, but then lost to England and Ireland. This left their future uncertain until England's win over New Zealand secured their place in the semi-finals. Matthews has scored 115 runs in five innings so far. She acknowledged that she has not yet played her best cricket but believes the Windies still have a lot of potential. We need big performances from our top players. A standout individual effort will be important, she said. However, to beat a team like Australia, we need more than one player stepping up. Our best players need to rise to the occasion tomorrow. I feel like players like Aliyah Alleyne and Jahzara Claxton have been excellent role players throughout the tournament. With our stars alongside them stepping up, we'll need a complete team performance. We havent played our best match yet. Neither I nor Deandra Dottin nor I have scored enough runs, which gives us plenty of room to improve as a team. Hopefully, some of us can step up more and challenge the Aussies. Matthews has had memorable success against Australia in the past. Three years ago, she scored 132 runs off just 64 balls, helping the West Indies achieve the highest successful chase in women's T20 international history by chasing down 213 runs with one ball left. Earlier in that series, she also scored an unbeaten 99, and in Kolkata a decade ago, her 45-ball 66 helped the West Indies win the Women's T20 World Cup. Australia's Ellyse Perry, one of the few players still around from the side that lost that 2016 final, chose not to focus on the past, despite entering the semi-final on the back of two consecutive half-centuries. We don't want to think about past losses. That was 10 years ago. The game has changed a lot since then. You can't even relate things to our last match because sports can be unpredictable, she said. We've played against each other quite a lot in the past couple of months. Earlier this year, we toured the West Indies and had a warm-up match, so we know each other fairly well right now. They have tremendously talented and dangerous players with a lot of experience. This will be a great challenge for us. The quick turnaround and the change of venue make it even more interesting. We're really looking forward to it. Australia's Ash Gardner also recognised the challenge posed by Matthews and Deandra Dottin. They previously played together at the Gujarat Giants. The West Indies present a different threat. They have a lot of talent and power within their team. They also have plenty of experience, led expertly by Hayley Matthews, who can change a game quickly. Then you have Deandra Dottin, who is a threat in every aspect of the game. Shes an excellent player, and I've had the chance to play alongside her. I admire her fearless approach to cricket, which can be intimidating because she can turn a game around in an instant. The West Indies present a different threat.
