Merry Christmas And Happy New: Talismanic India batter Virat Kohli has extended warm Christmas and New Year greetings to fans worldwide, wishing joy and prosperity for the festive season. The former India captain conveyed his message through his Instagram stories on Thursday, when the world was occupied with Christmas celebrations. Merry Christmas And Happy New Year. May this season fill your home with warmth, your heart with joy, and your life with happiness that lasts all year long. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! wrote Kohli in an Instagram post on Thursday. Kohli, who has quit Test and T20Is and now only plays 50-over cricket at the international stage, struck a match-winning 131 to guide Delhi to a four-wicket victory in their Elite Group D clash over Andhra Pradesh in the opening round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday. It was also Kohlis 58th List A hundred with his 131 coming in 101 balls and studded with 14 fours and three sixes, as Delhi chased down a challenging target of 299 in 37.4 overs. The knock also took him past 16,000 List A runs, making him only the second Indian male batter, after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, to reach that landmark. Firemen save man trapped mid-air on 10th floor after fall from Surat high-rise
AHMEDABAD: An early-morning rescue in Gujarats Surat saw firemen save a 57-year-old man who slipped from the 10th floor of a high-rise and remained suspended between the 8th and 10th floors for nearly an hour, turning a routine winter morning into a race against death. The incident occurred when a middle-aged man fell from the 10th floor of a residential tower in the Jahangirabad area and survived only because his body became wedged between the window grille and railing of the 8th floor, leaving him dangling helplessly in mid-air. The man, identified as Nitinbhai Adia, a resident of the Rander zone, was reportedly sleeping near the window of his 10th-floor flat when the accident occurred. In a split second, he slipped and plunged downward, but his fall was arrested when his leg became firmly trapped in the iron grille of the 8th floor. Eyewitnesses described the scene, with Nitinbhai hanging several floors above the ground, crying for help while struggling to keep himself steady. One wrong move and he could have slipped, a local resident said, recalling the panic that gripped the building. The fire control room swung into action as soon as the emergency call was received. Given the gravity of the situation, teams from three fire stations, Jahangirpura, Palanpur and Adajan, rushed to the spot. On arrival, the fire brigade launched a carefully planned, double-layer rescue operation. As a precautionary measure, personnel spread a safety net on the ground floor to prevent a fatal outcome in case of a fall. At the same time, other firemen accessed both the 10th and 8th floors to reach the trapped man from above and below. We treated it as a high-risk rescue, a fire officer said, explaining the strategy. First, we secured the victim with ropes and a safety belt from the 10th floor so that his body weight was supported. Only after that did we attempt to free his trapped leg. As Nitinbhais leg was tightly jammed in the metal grille of the 8th-floor window, firemen used hydraulic cutters and specialised tools to carefully cut through the iron bars, ensuring that vibrations or sudden movements did not worsen the situation. The rescue operation continued for nearly an hour amid pin-drop silence, as residents and passersby watched from below. After sustained effort and precise coordination, the fire team succeeded in freeing Nitinbhai and safely pulling him inside the building. As he was rescued, onlookers broke into applause, visibly shaken by how close the incident had come to ending in tragedy. Nitinbhai was immediately shifted to Gurukrupa Hospital in an108 ambulance for treatment. Doctors said his condition was stable, though he had suffered injuries to his leg. Fire officials later said timely information, swift coordination and disciplined execution helped save a precious life. Minutes matter in such cases, the officer said. Today, teamwork made the difference.
BJP MP accuses AAP MLA of Rs 75 lakh demand during PM programs, threatens to quit party
AHMEDABAD: A storm has erupted in Gujarats Narmada district after Bharuch BJP MP Mansukh Vasava accused AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava of demanding Rs 75 lakh during programmes linked to the Prime Minister, triggering a political clash that has drawn in the district collector and put the ruling BJP government under direct pressure. The controversy revolves around what began as coordination over a Prime Ministerial programme has escalated into allegations of extortion, administrative intimidation and threats of political rebellion. The dispute, which initially surfaced during coordination meetings, escalated after the BJP MP alleged that the AAP MLA had demanded and scattered Rs 75 lakh from officials of the Roads and Buildings Department during two major national-level programmes held in the district. The controversy deepened when Mansukh Vasava targeted not only the opposition MLA but also the district administration. Speaking to the media in an unusually aggressive tone, he said, I have a recording of the Rs 75 lakh demand, yet I fail to understand why the collector is suppressing the matter. The collector appears afraid of Chaitar Vasava. With this statement, the MP directly questioned the neutrality of the district collector, suggesting the administration was bending under political pressure. The BJP MP went a step further by issuing a dramatic ultimatum to his own party. I am fighting for the government and for honest officials. But if the government does not give me justice, I will leave the Bharatiya Janata Party. I cannot tolerate such wrong people, he said, sending shockwaves through BJP ranks in the tribal belt. According to Mansukh Vasava, the alleged demand surfaced twice during district coordination meetings, where Chaitar Vasava repeatedly sought details of expenditure related to the programmes. Even after officials presented the accounts, he continued to intimidate them and demanded Rs 75 lakh, the MP claimed, adding that he objected immediately and ensured no money was paid. The controversy took a sharper turn when BJP MP claimed that the district collector had earlier acknowledged the demand in the presence of the district BJP president. However, when Chaitar Vasava later met the collector seeking clarification, the collector reportedly denied that any such demand had been made. That sudden U-turn has left me furious, the MP said, accusing the administration of backtracking under pressure. Escalating the issue further, Mansukh Vasava said, This is not a small matter that can be brushed aside. If this continues in the media, the state government will have to decide who is right the collector, Chaitar Vasava or Mansukh Vasava. He insisted that both the collector and the state government must take a clear stand and warned that he would not allow the matter to fade. In one of his strongest remarks, the MP said, Chaitar Vasava is dominating the district collector, and the collector is sitting as if nothing has happened. I will place all facts before the government. If justice is denied to me, I will quit the BJP. He reiterated that his fight was not for personal gain but to protect officials and development works from what he described as wrong elements. Providing political context, Mansukh Vasava referred to an earlier press conference in which he had accused AAP leaders, without naming them, of acting like agents in tribal districts. They roam across the state, disrupt development works, demand inquiries in coordination meetings, and then harass officials and agencies, he alleged, claiming such tactics were leading to siphoning off lakhs of rupees meant for tribal development projects. As accusations continue to fly, the Narmada controversy has moved beyond a local dispute, placing the BJP government, district administration and AAP leadership under intense scrutiny and turning a Prime Ministerial programme into one of Gujarats most explosive political flashpoints.

WPL 2026: Ex-India Player Anagha Deshpande Joins Delhi Capitals As Assistant Coach
DY Patil Stadium: Ahead of the 2026 season of the Womens Premier League (WPL), former India cricketer Anagha Deshpande has joined three-time runners-up Delhi Capitals (DC) as an assistant coach. It is understood that Anaghas coaching duties will center around fielding and batting in the DC set-up. Yes, I am joining the Delhi Capitals. It was finalised a few days ago. Hundred percent, it's a great opportunity for me. I will get to learn a lot of things which will aid me in future. I have seen them try for winning a trophy for three years. I hope I can help them win the trophy this time, Anagha told IANS on Thursday. At DC, Anagha will link up with head coach Jonathan Batty. Her appointment comes after the exit of Lisa Keightley, who has joined Mumbai Indians as head coach, and Milap Mewada, who is now coaching Goas mens team in the ongoing domestic season. Anagha played 23 ODIs and eight T20Is for India from 2008 to 2014, and made 483 runs across both formats. As a wicketkeeper, she took 16 catches and effected 21 stumpings in white-ball cricket for India. She played for Maharashtra, Railways, Gujarat and Puducherry in the domestic cricket circuit. Anagha has enjoyed considerable success as a coach in Uttarakhand since retiring as a player. She led the state's U19 women's team to one-day trophy titles in 2021/22 and 2022/23, and guided the U23 side to entering knockout stages in T20 and one-day championships in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Under Anagha, Uttarakhand reached their first senior women's finals in both T20 and one-day formats in 2023/24. Players like Nandini Kashyap, Raghvi Bist and Prema Rawat, all of whom featured in this year's WPL and India A teams, attribute their growth to Anaghas coaching. She has also worked as a coach with many teams in senior and U19 womens challenger trophies, as well as served in various assignments at the zonal and national level for camps organised by the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). DC will open their 2026 WPL campaign on January 10 against defending champions Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. India batter Jemimah Rodrigues was recently named as DCs new captain, and Anagha backed the decision. I have seen her leadership. She is well deserving to be the captain. I have seen her lead Mumbai. The way her nature is in terms of leading a team, there is no need for a tag to say that she is a leader. She plays in the same way as a player and now that she has a leadership tag, she is hundred percent well deserving of it, she said. Meanwhile, IANS understands that former India captain Anju Jain is likely to take charge as DCs batting coach. Anju featured in eight Tests and 65 ODIs for India from 1993 to 2005, and amassed 2170 runs overall. 62% of mouth cancer cases in India due to alcohol and tobacco: Study
NEW DELHI: Six out of 10 people in India are suffering from mouth cancer due to frequent consumption of alcohol, along with chewing of smokeless tobacco products such as gutkha, khaini, paan, said a first large-scale study published on Wednesday. Authored by a team of researchers from the Center for Cancer Epidemiology, and Homi Bhabha National Institute, in Maharashtra, the study found that as little as under 2 gram a day of beer was associated with a heightened risk of buccal mucosa cancer (BMC), while 9 gram a day of alcohol - equivalent to around one standard drink - was associated with an approximately 50 per cent increased risk of mouth cancer. When combined with chewing tobacco, it is likely accounted for 62% of all such cases in the country. The findings, published in the journal BMJ Global Health, suggest that more than one in 10 cases (nearly 11.5%) of all buccal mucosa cancers in India are attributable to alcohol, rising to 14% in some of the states with a high prevalence of the disease, such as Meghalaya, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh. States like Arunachal Pradesh have reported the highest prevalence of alcohol consumption (26%), while states like Gujarat have reported very low alcohol consumption (4%). As of 2022, there were an estimated 4,00,000 new oral cancer cases globally. It is the second most common cancer in India, with an estimated 1,43,759 new cases and 79,979 deaths occurring each year in India alone. BMC is the predominant form of oral cancer in the Indian sub-continent, and despite its poor survival rate - 43% net fiveyear survival. This study shows that alcohol, even in low quantities, increases the risk for BMC. Prevention of consumption of tobacco and alcohol together could substantially reduce the incidence of BMC, the study said. For the study, researchers investigated the impact of alcohol consumption, including 11 internationally-recognised liquors and 30 locally-brewed liquor (LBLs) from different regions of India - Tharra, Desi, Mahua, Apong on the risk of BMC among Indian men. The researchers compared 1,803 people with confirmed buccal mucosa cancer and 1,903 randomly selected people free of the disease (controls) from five different study centres between 2010 and 2021. Most of the participants were aged between 35 and 54; nearly half (around 46%) of cases were among 25-to 45-year-olds. It found that compared with those who didnt drink alcohol, the risk was 68% higher for those who did, rising to 72% for those favouring internationally recognised alcohol, and to 87% for those opting for local drinks.

Hockey Star Hardik Singh Proposed For Khel Ratna; 24 Recommended For Arjuna Awards
Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna: Two-time Olympic bronze medallist hockey player Hardik Singh has been recommended for the prestigeous Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the highest award for sportsperons given the government, while athletes Tejaswin Shankar, Priyanka, chess grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujarati and Divya Deshmukh, shooters Akhil Sheron and Mehuli Ghosh and women's badminton pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were among those recommended for the Arjuna Award by the committee set up by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Wednesday. The committee, which met in New Delhi on Wednesday, has recommended the 27-year-old midfielder, Hardik, for the prestigious award for his contributions to the Indian hockey team in the last two years. Hardik has played a key role in the Indian team winning bronze medals in the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games and was also a member of the Indian team that won gold in the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023 and the Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir. Born in Khusropur in Punjab, Hardik, who has been a mainstay of the Indian men's hockey team, has so far earned 166 caps with the national team and is employed with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). Six hockey players have been conferred the Khel Ratna so far - Dhanraj Pillay (1999-2000), Sardar Singh (2017), Rani Rampal (2020), PR Sreejesh (2021), Manpreet Singh (2021), and Harmanpreet Singh (2024). Sources said his was the only name recommended by the panel. What was surprising for many was that no member of the Indian women's cricket team, which made history by winning their maiden Women's ODI World Cup title last month, was considered by the panel. Interestingly, last year, Indian mens hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh received the Khel Ratna alongside two-time Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, chess prodigy Gukesh D, and para-athlete Praveen Kumar. The selection committee also recommended 24 sportspersons for the Arjuna Awards, including Aarti Pal, who became the first yogasana athlete to be recommended for the honour. Aarti is the reigning national and Asian champion in yogasana, which will feature as a demonstration sport at the Asian Games in Japan next year. Rifle shooter Mehuli Ghosh, gymnast Pranati Nayak, and India's top-ranked women's badminton pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are also among the recommendations. Polo star Padmanabh Singh, along with Sonam Malik (wrestling), Sutirtha Mukherjee (table tennis), Rudransh Khandelwal (para-shooting), Olympian rower Arvind Singh, and Ekta Bhyan (para-athletics), have also been recommended. Notably, no cricketer features among this years recommendations. Mohammed Shami was the last cricketer to receive the Arjuna Award in 2023. Narendra Modi Stadium Ground: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, along with Ishan Kishan and Devdutt Padikkal, smashed centuries to benefit their respective teams in Round One of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26 Season on Wednesday. It was a day on which a record 22 individual centuries were scored on the opening day of the competition. From a team perspective, Karnataka and Bengal completed mammoth successful run chases to make a big statement on Day One of Indias premier domestic mens one-day tournament. Kohli marked his return to Bengaluru with a commanding century as Delhi chased down 299 against Andhra with more than 12 overs to spare in their Elite Group D opener on Wednesday. Kohli's 58th List A hundred - 131 off 101 balls with 14 fours and three sixes - at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground overshadowed Ricky Bhui's 122 for Andhra as Delhi secured a four-wicket victory. Delhi pacer Simarjeet Singh was adjudged Player of the Match for picking 5-54. Meanwhile, in Jaipur, another former India captain, Rohit Sharma, produced a masterclass in front of over 20,000 spectators at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, smashing an unbeaten 155 off 94 balls to guide Mumbai to an eight-wicket victory over Sikkim in Elite Group C. Rohit raced to his 37th List A century in just 62 balls before adding another 50 runs off 29 deliveries, cutting and driving at will against an inexperienced Sikkim attack that had posted 236/6, as Mumbai chased down the target in 30.3 overs. In Ranchi, Bihar posted a staggering 574/6 - now the highest score in men's List A cricket - as teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed 190 off 84 balls and captain Sakibul Gani blasted an unbeaten 128 off 40 balls - the fastest by an Indian batter in men's List A cricket - to crush Arunachal Pradesh by 397 runs in a Plate Group match on Wednesday. Suryavanshi struck 16 fours and 15 sixes in his blistering knock at a strike rate of 226.19, adding 158 runs for the opening wicket with Mangal Mahrour (33) before combining with Piyush Singh (77 off 66 balls) for a 103-run second-wicket partnership. Wicketkeeper Ayush Loharuka continued the carnage with 116 off 56 balls, including hitting 11 fours and eight sixes, before Gani unleashed mayhem in the final overs by hitting 10 fours and 12 sixes to propel Bihar past the 500-mark. Bihar's bowlers then completed the rout, dismissing Arunachal Pradesh for just 177 in 42.1 overs with Akash Raj (3-29), Suraj Kashyap (3-31) and Himanshu Tiwari (2-33) sharing eight wickets between themselves. In Rajkot, Dhruv Jurel and Rinku Singh hit half-centuries as Uttar Pradesh opened their campaign with an 84-run win over Hyderabad at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. Apart from the duo, Abhishek Goswami and Aryan Juyal were among their other half-centurions. UP's spin trio - List A debutants Zeeshan Ansari (4-31) and Prashant Veer (3-47), along with Vipraj Nigam - stifled Hyderabad's chase of 325 after the UP top-order posted 324/5. Hyderabad captain Tanmay Agarwal's 53 off 43 balls threatened briefly before the lower-order collapsed, as they were bowled out for 240. Defending champions Karnataka pulled off a stunning run chase, overhauling a record target of 413 against Jharkhand with 15 balls to spare at the Narendra Modi Stadium Ground B in Ahmedabad. Player of the Match Devdutt Padikkal's brilliantly-paced 147 off 118 balls eclipsed Ishan Kishan's explosive 125 off just 39 balls - the second fastest List A century by an Indian male batter - as Karnataka romped home despite losing five wickets on the way. Captain Mayank Agarwal (54 off 34 balls) and Padikkal added 114 in the first 11.5 overs before Abhinav Manohar (56 not out) and debutant Dhruv Prabhakar (40 not out) sealed Karnatakas victory with an unbroken 88-run stand off 41 balls. Kishan had earlier clubbed 14 sixes in his whirlwind knock, helping Jharkhand amass 151 runs in the final 10 overs to post 412 for nine. Meanwhile, at the main Narendra Modi Stadium, Tamil Nadu opened their campaign with a 101-run victory over Pondicherry, with Pradosh Ranjan Paul (73) and captain N. Himachal Pradesh defeated Uttarakhand by 95 runs as Akash Vasisht took three wickets, while Arzan Nagwaswalla's four-wicket haul powered Gujarat to an eight-wicket victory over Services. Saurashtra successfully chased down a 346-run target against Odisha with five wickets in hand, powered by Gajjar Sammar's unbeaten 132. Odisha's Swastik Samal had earlier smashed 212 with Biplab Samantaray contributing 100. Kerala thrashed Tripura by 145 runs after posting 348 for eight, with Baba Aparajith taking 5-15. Vignesh Puthur created List A cricket history by taking six catches as a fielder - the most ever in an innings, surpassing the previous record of five shared by 21 fielders. Punjab defeated Maharashtra by 51 runs, with Naman Dhir's 97, Anmolpreet Singh's 85, and Prabhsimran Singh's 60 laying the foundation for their big win before debutants Sukhdeep Bajwa and Krish Bhagat claimed two wickets each. Centre imposes 'complete ban' on new mining leases in Aravalli range amid row over redefinition
NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has issued directives to the states for a complete ban on granting any new mining leases in the Aravalli Range. This measure aims to protect the range from unregulated mining activities. The Ministry has also instructed the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) to identify additional areas or zones within the entire Aravalli Range where mining should be prohibited, beyond those currently restricted by the Centre, based on ecological, geological, and landscape-level considerations. Furthermore, the ICFRE has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive, science-based Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM) for the entire Aravalli region. The Centre has described the 'total ban' as a significant step towards the conservation and protection of the entire Aravalli Range, which stretches from Delhi to Gujarat by preventing illegal mining. This statement follows reports indicating that the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) contradicts recommendations from a government-headed committee regarding the definition of the Aravallis. The CEC was established by the Supreme Court in May 2002 and reconstituted in December 2023 to provide the Court with advice on environmental and forestry matters. Aravallis need care beyond mining rules Additionally, these reports claim that government institutions, such as the Forest Survey of India and the Supreme Court's own amicus curiae, opposed the new definition of the Aravallis. The controversy arose when the apex court accepted the recommendations of a committee chaired by the Environment Ministry Secretary, which included representatives from Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi, as well as technical experts. This committee proposed that any landform rising more than 100 meters above local relief should be treated as part of the Aravalli hills. The new definition exposes the Aravalli range to increased vulnerability from mining and other activities. It is reported that all states agreed to adopt this long-standing Rajasthan definition, along with additional safeguards to ensure it is objective and transparent. Why is govt pushing through 'fatally flawed' redefinition of Aravallis, asks Congress
Centre will protect entire Aravallis; no mining leases; protected zone to be expanded
A complete ban on new mining leases in the Aravalli Range has been ordered by the Union Ministry of Environment. This move aims to protect the entire geological ridge from Delhi to Gujarat. The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education will identify more areas for prohibition. A comprehensive management plan will be developed.
Gujarat Giants Lack Indian Batting Reliability Despite Having A Balanced Squad, Says Chopra
IANS File Photo: Former India opener Aakash Chopra feels Gujarat Giants (GG) have assembled a well-rounded squad for their 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 campaign, but lack reliability in terms of Indian batting resources. Only one of Georgia Wareham or Kim Garth makes the XI. Gujarat Giants need batting firepower, which makes it tricky. Unlike Mumbai, Delhi, UP, or RCB - who boast 1-2 settled Indian stars in their top 4-5 - GG lacks that reliability, Chopra said on JioStar. Yastika Bhatia returns from injury, not a lock ahead of Richa Ghosh, leaving her isolated. Bharti Fulmali follows, so the lineup feels thin. Kim Garth sits out; Georgia Wareham plays to shore up batting, or it crumbles, he added. The WPL 2026 season runs from January 9 to February 5, and former India batter Veda Krishnamurthy felt the side did well to assemble a balanced squad at the auction table last month in New Delhi. Gujarat Giants are strong with Beth Mooney at the top, who scored heavily, and Ash Gardner excelled as captain at number four last year. They just needed the right combination with Sophie Devine, providing flexibility. Plenty of bowling options and experience with Renuka Singh Thakur taking the new ball. They stayed quiet for 70% of the auction, waited patiently, then secured key players - resulting in a well-balanced squad, she said. AHMEDABAD: A multi-crore land scam (non-agricultural) has rattled Gujarats bureaucracy after the Enforcement Directorate raided top officials homes in Surendranagar, arrested a Deputy Mamlatdar with Rs 67.50 lakh cash and seized over 100 sensitive files. The ED raid has exposed a deep-rooted nexus of middlemen, speed money, and misuse of power. Gujarats administrative corridors shook on December 23 when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stormed into Surendranagar, launching coordinated raids at the residence of the District Collector and other senior officials in connection with a massive land NA (non-agricultural) scam running into crores. As the dust settled on the searches, the spotlight narrowed sharply on Deputy Mamlatdar Chandrasinh Mori, who was taken into custody by the ED, turning the investigation from suspicion to arrest within hours. On December 24, the ED produced Mori before the Special Court at Ahmedabad Rural Court, seeking a 14-day remand to unravel what officials described as a well-oiled corruption machinery operating inside the Collectors office. After hearing arguments, the court granted remand till January 1. The remand application highlights crucial findings of the probe. A. Bribes were systematically demanded and collected as speed money for processing applications without delay. B. The bribe amount was pre-fixed and calculated on a per square metre basis, depending on the nature of the application. C. Payments were routed through identified intermediaries, commission agents and dalals, whose names, roles and contact details were recorded by him. According to ED officials, the arrest followed the recovery of Rs 67.50 lakh in cash from Moris residence, money that investigators believe is directly linked to illegal gratification in land NA approvals. The cash recovery is a crucial piece of evidence. It points towards systematic extortion and abuse of official position, an ED officer said. The ED has also registered a fresh complaint and formally became the complainant in an ACB case, indicating that more arrests and wider action may follow. This is not an isolated act. The probe clearly indicates the involvement of multiple officials and agents, the officer added. During the raids, investigators stumbled upon another startling detail: the Surendranagar District Collector allegedly used to take official files home. As many as 100 government files were seized from the Collectors bungalow, pulling the senior-most officer of the district under a cloud of suspicion. ED sources said the seized files are now being examined to trace irregular NA approvals and undue benefits. The EDs investigation has peeled back layers of a deeply entrenched racket. Land NA permissions under CLU (Change of Land Use) applications were allegedly being processed through a network of middlemen and agents. Applicants willing to pay speed money saw their files cleared swiftly, while others waited endlessly. Deputy Mamlatdar Mori, who held key powers related to land NA, is accused of misusing his authority. Investigators revealed that bribe amounts were fixed based on the size of land per square meter, collected through intermediaries, and routed to officials in a planned and systematic manner. This was organised corruption, not random bribery, an ED official stated. As the enforcement net tightened, the defence pushed back. Advocate Nitin Gandhi, appearing for Mori, raised serious objections in court. He claimed that during the raid, the search warrant was not properly acknowledged and that the recovery panchnama did not clearly mention the specific case under which the ED searched. Gandhi further questioned the legality of Moris detention, stating that he was detained at 11:45 pm and produced before the court only at 11 am the next day. Why was he brought before the court after such a gap is a serious issue. The source of the alleged 67 lakh must also be examined independently, the lawyer argued, adding that it remains to be seen whether any names of other officials were extracted under pressure. Despite the defences arguments, the court granted ED custody till 5 pm on January 1, giving investigators time to confront the accused with documents, seized cash, and digital trails. Meanwhile, the revelations have sent shockwaves through Surendranagars Collectorate, with discussions rife about how deep the scam runs, who all benefited, and whether more senior officials will soon face the knock of the ED.
In a remarkable feat, Gujarat crosses five lakh rooftop solar system installations mark
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat has scripted a major renewable energy milestone by installing more than five lakh rooftop solar systems, generating a combined capacity of 1,879 megawatts, firmly placing the State at the forefront of Indias clean energy transition. Achieved under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojna, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the feat reinforces Gujarats dominance in rooftop solar adoption and will take centre stage at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Renewable Conference (VGRC) in Rajkot. The achievement doesnt stand alone. Gujarat has so far installed over 11 lakh rooftop solar systems cumulatively across schemes, a figure that underlines the states long-term, policy-driven push towards renewable energy leadership. From vision to execution, Gujarat continues to set the national benchmark. This surge reflects the Prime Ministers renewable energy roadmap and the hands-on governance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, whose citizen-centric policies have converted solar power from an ambition into a household reality. SCCL to set up solar, thermal power plants in Rajasthan As a result, Gujarat today retains the No. 1 position in rooftop solar installations in India. Significantly, the State has already achieved 50 per cent of its target of 10 lakh residential rooftop solar installations, a goal set for March 2027, marking a decisive halfway milestone in its clean energy journey. Financial accessibility has played a crucial role, with residential consumers availing Rs 3,778 crore in subsidies, easing the cost burden and accelerating adoption. To remove procedural hurdles, the Gujarat government rolled out a series of consumer-friendly reforms. These include 2,950 assistance for regulatory charges for systems up to 6 kW, waiver of network strengthening charges, and exemption from mandatory net metering agreements. There is no load limit for residential solar systems; surplus electricity can be sold to the grid, and no banking charges are levied on households, making solar both simple and rewarding. Telangana mulls German solar tech to strengthen power sector, aid farmers The subsidy structure further sweetens the deal: 30,000 per kW for systems up to 2 kW, 18,000 per kW for systems between 2 and 3 kW, and a maximum subsidy of 78,000 for installations above 3 kW. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the era now belongs to solar, wind, hybrid energy and green hydrogen, adding that Gujarat had anticipated this transition well in advance. He noted that the State now contributes a significant share to Indias renewable capacity, with rooftop solar emerging as its strongest pillar made possible under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. From January 10, the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Rajkot will spotlight real-life rooftop solar success stories, homes slashing power bills and communities feeding surplus electricity back into the grid. Together, they tell one story: how PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna is not just lighting homes, but reshaping Gujarats energy future. Australia to offer hours of free solar power

Mobile flashlight reveals fatal fight inside Ahmedabad housing board home
AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad woke up to a crime on December 23 when a dispute inside a Gujarat Housing Board residence in the Bapunagar area ended in murder and death by suicide, coming to light only after a mobile phone flashlight revealed blood on the floor and lifeless bodies inside the house. Police said Mehul Thakor murdered his wife Neeta by attacking her neck and left hand with a sharp weapon and then died by suicide by hanging himself. The couple had been married for four years and lived in the housing board building where the incident occurred. According to Bapunagar police, preliminary investigation and injury marks suggest that a fierce altercation preceded the deaths. The injuries on both bodies indicate a violent fight before the incident. Prima facie, it appears the husband killed his wife and then died by suicide, a senior police officer said. The horrific scene came to light when Mehuls younger brother, Rahul Thakor, returned home around 9.30 pm after work. The house was locked, the windows were shut, and repeated knocks went unanswered. Rahul tried calling both his brother and sister-in-law, but their phones were unreachable, triggering suspicion. Driven by fear, Rahul climbed to the terrace, jumped to the rear side of the house, and peeped inside through a window. Darkness obscured the view until he switched on his mobile phone flashlight. What he saw left him stunned: blood splattered on the floor and a pair of feet lying motionless. Panicked, Rahul alerted relatives. When the door was finally forced open, the scene inside left everyone numb. Mehul was found hanging with a saree, while Neeta lay on the floor in a pool of blood, bearing deep injuries on her neck, chest and ribs. The landlord immediately called the 108 ambulance service, but doctors declared both dead at the spot. A call was then made to the police control room, following which Bapunagar police rushed to the scene. Police registered a murder case based on Rahuls complaint. Rahul, originally from Bhilachal village in Banaskantha districts Dantiwada taluka, had been living with the couple for over two years. His father died in 2023, while his mother resides in their native village. Neeta worked as a maid in the society, while Mehul and Rahul were employed locally. Investigators believe that all three had gone to work during the day and returned home in the evening, after which the fatal confrontation unfolded behind closed doors. What exactly triggered the violence is still under investigation. We are questioning relatives and neighbours and examining forensic evidence, police said. As police sealed the house and continued their probe, the Gujarat Housing Board complex was left grappling with shock over a marriage that ended in bloodshed, a fight that turned fatal, and a night that left behind silence and unanswered questions.

Thackeray brothers to join hands for BMC polls after 20 years
MUMBAI: After a gap of 20 years and following prolonged deliberations, cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have decided to join hands politically to take on the BJP in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Asias richest civic body, scheduled for January 15 next year. The official announcement of the Thackerays coming together for the BMC and other municipal corporation elections will be made on Wednesday at 12 noon in Mumbai. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said the formal announcement of the Thackeray brothers joining hands would be made on Wednesday at Hotel Blue Sea in Mumbai. Sources said that along with the official declaration of the alliance, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray will address the media and explain the reasons behind their decision to come together Sources said that the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has decided to contest 150 seats, while the remaining 77 seats, out of the total 227 in the BMC, will be contested by the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Shiv Sena (UBT) seeks alliance with Congress ahead of upcoming BMC polls In the seat-sharing discussions, talks on over 150 seats have been completed, while around 70 seats are yet to be sorted out. There was contention over some seats, mostly from Marathi-dominated areas such as Dadar, Mahim and Parel, where both parties have staked claims. However, we are sure and confident that in the next few days the seat-sharing will be resolved and a concrete plan and manifesto will be prepared, focusing on the Marathi manoos and their welfare, said a source close to Uddhav Thackeray. BJP-led Mahayuti governments decision to impose Hindi in primary schools was the trigger point for both Thackerays to join hands to oppose this decision. Subsequently, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray felt that their alliance should be extended further for the elections to retain the BMC and gain power in other municipal corporation elections. Both understood the gravity and importance of their togetherness, said a senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, requesting anonymity. Political observers said that if both Thackerays come together, the split in Marathi votes could be avoided. Besides, the Thackerays are also eyeing Muslim votes, which account for around 18 to 20 per cent of Mumbais electorate. Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS are looking at the Mamu factor, around 28 per cent Marathi and 20 per cent Muslim voters, to fight the BJP. On the other hand, the BJP is planning to consolidate North Indian, Gujarati, Marwari and sections of Marathi votes to secure 123 seats in Mumbai. In this election, the organisational skills of Uddhav Thackeray and the oratory skills of Raj Thackeray will be tested, said a political observer. Man accused in Rs 13,000-crore drug trafficking case extradited from UAE
NEW DELHI: One of the countrys most-wanted fugitives, Ritik Bajaj, accused in a Rs 13,000-crore drug trafficking case, has been extradited from the UAE and brought back to India on Tuesday, a senior officer said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), facilitated the return of the wanted fugitive from the UAE. Bajaj was the subject of an Interpol Red Corner Notice. Acting on intelligence inputs from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), New Delhi, his location was geo-tracked, triggering an international operation. Coordination between the CBI and the NCB in Bangkok led to credible travel movement data, which confirmed Bajajs shift to the UAE. Further collaboration with the NCB in Abu Dhabi helped locate the fugitive. Bajaj had been on the wanted list of the Delhi Police and the NCB since October 2024. In October last year, the Delhi Police seized 1,289 kg of cocaine and 40 kg of hydroponic Thai marijuana, valued at Rs 13,000 crore, in Delhi and Gujarat. Five accused were arrested, and a chargesheet was filed against 14 people, including Ritik Bajaj. Investigators said the drugs were brought to Ankleshwar from South American countries for purification at a pharmaceutical company and were later supplied to Delhi. The police found that several pharmaceutical companies based in South India and Gujarat were used to transport the drugs. Five legitimate firms and three shell companies were identified. The suppliers used Delhi as a transit point to distribute the drugs to other parts of the country. The Baisoya brothersVirender alias Veeru and Ravinderare at the centre of the massive drug trafficking network. They are residents of Pilanji village, located behind Delhis Sarojini Nagar market. Virender Baisoya alias Veeru, described by the police as the kingpin of the international syndicate, is alleged to be operating the racket from Dubai. Last year, the police booked 19 people linked to the cartel. Of them, 14 have been arrested, including Tushar Goyal, an heir to two publishing houses, while five were declared proclaimed offenders. The proclaimed offenders include Virender Baisoya, the Dubai-based businessman funding the cartels operations; his younger son Rishab Baisoya, 25; Ritik Bajaj, 36; Pramod, 50; and Vikas Rane, 49. The police have claimed that it was Ritik Bajaj who facilitated the transportation of Thai marijuana to India from Southeast Asia.
Indian Navy's stitched sailing vessel to undertake maiden overseas voyage to Oman on December 29
NEW DELHI: INSV Kaundinya, the Indian Navy's pioneering stitched sailing vessel that revives India's ancient shipbuilding and seafaring traditions, will undertake her maiden overseas voyage on 29 Dec 2025. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Tuesday said, The vessel will be flagged off from Porbandar, Gujarat, for Muscat, Oman, symbolically retracing the historic maritime routes that connected India with the wider Indian Ocean world for millennia. Inspired by depictions of ancient Indian ships and constructed entirely using traditional stitched-plank techniques, INSV Kaundinya represents a rare convergence of history, craftsmanship and modern naval expertise. INSV Kaundinya is a stitched sail ship, based on a 5th-century ship depicted in the paintings of Ajanta Caves. The project was initiated through a tripartite agreement signed in Jul 2023 between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy, and Hodi Innovations, with funding from the Ministry of Culture. Following the keel laying in September 2023, the vessel's construction was undertaken using a traditional method of stitching by a team of skilled artisans from Kerala, led by master shipwright Babu Sankaran. Over several months, the team painstakingly stitched wooden planks on the ship's hull using coir rope, coconut fibre and natural resin. The ship was launched in Feb 2025 at Goa. Unlike contemporary vessels, her wooden planks are stitched together using coconut coir rope and sealed with natural resins, reflecting a shipbuilding tradition once prevalent along India's coasts and across the Indian Ocean. This technology, MoD added, enabled Indian mariners to undertake long-distance voyages to West Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia long before the advent of modern navigation and metallurgy. The project was undertaken through a tripartite MoU between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy and Hodi Innovations as part of India's efforts to rediscover and revive indigenous knowledge systems. As the MoD earlier said, the boat has been Built by traditional artisans under the guidance of master shipwright Babu Sankaran and supported by extensive research, design and testing by the Indian Navy and academic institutions, the vessel is fully seaworthy and capable of oceanic navigation. Named after the legendary mariner Kaundinya, who is believed to have sailed from India to Southeast Asia in ancient times, the ship embodies India's historic role as a maritime nation.

AHMEDABAD: Senior officials in Gujarats Surendranagar district came under scrutiny on Tuesday after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a coordinated, multi-location search operation, triggering ripples across the local administration and signalling the seriousness and breadth of the probe. ED teams fanned out across Surendranagar and Wadhwan early in the day, carrying out synchronised searches aimed at senior Class-I officers. One team searched the official bungalow of Surendranagar District Collector Dr Rajendrakumar Patel, a 2015-batch IAS officer, while another simultaneously entered the residence of Deputy Mamlatdar Chandrasinh Mori in Wadhwans Rawalwas area, leaving little room for delay or information leakage. The operation was conducted under tight security, underscoring the sensitivity of the case and the seniority of the officials involved. More than eight ED vehicles were deployed on the ground, with local police forming a tight security cordon to prevent any disruption as officials moved in and out of the premises. Adequate police force was deployed to maintain law and order and ensure the operation proceeded smoothly without any untoward incident, a senior police officer said, adding that security arrangements had been made well in advance due to the involvement of senior officers. According to sources, ED officials spent several hours inside the collectors bungalow examining documents, official records and other materials, meticulously tracing financial trails that could point to undisclosed assets or irregular transactions. Almost in parallel, another ED team carried out an equally detailed search at Deputy Mamlatdar Moris residence, scrutinising property-related papers and financial documents as part of the same investigation. As the searches progressed, unease spread through government offices in the district, with the early-morning action against a serving district collector sending a clear signal that no rank was beyond scrutiny. By afternoon, the scope of the operation widened, with ED teams extending searches to the offices of contractors and advocates in the town, indicating a possible network of links connected to the alleged financial irregularities. While the ED has maintained silence on the exact trigger for the operation, officials familiar with the inquiry said the searches are linked to suspected financial irregularities and possible illegal or undisclosed transactions. Investigators are now working to establish links between government officials and private entities. There has been no official word so far on seizures, arrests or the next course of action. However, officials confirmed that a detailed assessment of the documents and materials recovered is underway, after which the ED is expected to decide on further legal steps, keeping Surendranagar and wider administrative circles in Gujarat on edge.

AHMEDABAD: Although Ahmedabad was elevated as the official host of 2030 Commonwealth Games at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, data placed before the Rajya Sabha exposes a stark domestic reality: Gujarats grassroots sports ecosystem, at least on paper, is virtually non-existent. The approval came with clarity between 15 and 17 disciplines, spanning athletics, para-sports, swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, boxing and netball, are slated for Ahmedabad-2030, promising inclusivity, scale and spectacle. However, just as the international spotlight brightened, a parallel set of numbers dimmed the celebration. Figures formally presented in the House on Thursday by the Union Sports Ministry, tell a sharply different story one rooted not in aspiration, but in absence. According to the government, Gujarat currently has zero Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centres (STCs). Besides, extension centres, meant to bridge talent gaps, barely register. The state has just one extension centre, yet it reports zero residential athletes and non-residential athletes, across both genders. Infrastructure exists in name, participation does not exist in numbers. SAI adopted akharas also reflects a complete vacuum. In totality, every grassroots pipeline meant to feed elite performance shows a flat line. The only measurable presence comes at the very top: two National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs). Yet even this lone data point underscores the imbalance elite-level facilities standing tall, while feeder systems beneath them remain statistically invisible. This contradiction is not cosmetic; it is structural. On one side, Gujarat prepares to host events in athletics, para-athletics, swimming, para-swimming, table tennis, para-table tennis, bowls, para-bowls, weightlifting, para-powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing sports that demand deep talent pools, long-term athlete development and robust training ecosystems. On the other, Parliament is told that the state has no SAI-supported grassroots athletes at all. The numbers raise a blunt question: Can a state leap directly to hosting a mega multi-sport event while its foundational athlete pipeline records zero? Ahmedabads Commonwealth Games dream, therefore, stands split between vision and verification global approval abroad, but domestic data at home that demands urgent scrutiny, course correction and transparency. Stadiums can be built on timelines but athletes cannot be built on announcements alone.

The Environment Ministry should hold immediate consultations with rural and urban people living in every block of every Aravalli district in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana, said the coalition group
NEW DELHI: Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday accused the Congress of spreading misinformation and lies on the issue of the new definition of the Aravallis and stressed that mining can be carried out legally in only 0.19 per cent of the area covered by the mountain range. At a press briefing, he said the Narendra Modi government remains fully committed to protecting and restoring the Aravallis. The Congress, which allowed rampant illegal mining in Rajasthan during its tenure, is spreading confusion, misinformation and lies about the issue, the minister alleged. The new definition, approved by the Supreme Court on the recommendation of the Environment Ministry, aims to curb illegal mining and allow sustainable mining legally, and that too only after a Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM) is prepared by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), he said. The ICFRE will identify areas where mining can be permitted only under exceptional and scientifically justified circumstances, sources said. The study will also determine ecologically sensitive, conservation-critical and restoration-priority areas within the Aravalli landscape where mining will be strictly prohibited. Yadav said that legally approved mining currently covers only a very small fraction of the Aravalli region, amounting to about 0.19 per cent of the total geographical area of 37 Aravalli districts in Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat. Delhi, which has five Aravalli districts, does not permit any mining. According to the Supreme Court's directions, he said, no new mining leases will be granted in the Aravalli region until a Management Plan for Sustainable Mining is prepared for the entire landscape by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. Existing mines may continue operations only if they strictly comply with sustainable mining norms laid down by the committee. In November 2025, the Supreme Court accepted a uniform legal definition of what constitutes the Aravalli Hills and Aravalli Range on the recommendation of a committee led by the Environment Ministry. Under this definition, an Aravalli Hill is a landform with an elevation of at least 100 metres above its local surrounding terrain and an Aravalli Range is a cluster of two or more such hills within 500 metres of each other. Critics, including environmentalists and some scientists, argue that many ecologically important parts of the Aravalli system do not meet the 100-metre threshold (e.g., low ridges, slopes, foothills and recharge areas), yet are important for groundwater recharge, biodiversity support, climate moderation and soil stability. They warn that areas excluded under the new definition could be opened for mining, construction and commercial activities, weakening long-standing protections and ecological continuity across the range. The redefinition has triggered protests, from Rajasthan to Haryana, and social media campaigns. The Centre has rejected the charge that the new definition weakens environmental safeguards. It has said that most of the Aravalli region (over 90 per cent) remains protected and the new definition does not relax mining controls. Yadav on Sunday said the Aravali range includes all landforms which exist within 500 metres of two adjoining hills of a height of 100 metres or more. All landforms existing within this 500-metre zone, irrespective of their height and slopes, are excluded for the purposes of grant of mining leases, he said.

Two Nilambur teak logs fetch record Rs 31.85 lakh at forest dept auction
MALAPPURAM: The famed Nilambur teak, which holds a cherished place in the forest departments history, fetched record price at a recent auction. Two logs together realised Rs 31,85,828, including tax, at an auction held at the departments Aruvakode central depot in Nilambur. The timber, estimated to be more than 100 years old, was felled after it posed a threat, near the Punchakoli tribal hamlet within the Nellikuthu forest station limits of Vazhikkadavu range. The logs were later transported to Aruvakode depot and auctioned off earlier this week. A Gujarat-based company purchased the B export grade teak for temple construction, while the C export grade teak was bought by a Tamil Nadu-based buyer for residential construction. Forest officials said this was the first time that Nilambur teak had fetched such a high price in auction in the state. The B grade log, measuring 1.836 cubic metres (cu. m.) in circumference, was sold at Rs 5.43 lakh per cu. m., fetching Rs 9,96,948. Including GST at 26.5%, the total value of this piece came to Rs 12,59,922. The second log, with a volume of 2.925 cu. m., was sold at Rs 5.21 lakh per cu. m., realising Rs 15,23,925. With tax, its value rose to Rs 19,25,906. Officials of the Nilambur teak plantation attributed the exceptional price to the timbers age and quality. Normally, we auction trees that are 50 to 60 years old from plantations. This particular tree was not part of a plantation but was felled from a tribal settlement area. It yielded two pieces. Both were of exceptional quality, without any damage or cracks, said Nilambur range forest officer Nithin P S. As this was a rare and near-perfect piece of timber, the price rose automatically. In fact, this is the first time in decades that we have seen such flawless teak, the Nithin added. He also pointed out that the bidding process played a key role in driving up the price. The bidding was between two private parties. Usually, traders dominate auctions, which keeps prices lower. This time, both bidders were purchasing for private use, which pushed the rate higher. Officials noted that in the previous auction, timber from the Kariyamuriyam plantation in the Nilambur north division -- mostly dead and fallen trees -- fetched very low prices. For several years, timber prices had remained subdued. This auction has given a fresh boost to the legacy of Nilambur teak, he said.
