Gujarats Asiatic lion count leaps from 674 to 891 in five years

AHMEDABAD: In a major conservation milestone, Gujarats Asiatic lion population has soared to 891 a sharp 32.2% jump (from 674) since 2020, with 217 new lions added in just five years. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced the surge on Wednesday, unveiling results from the 16th Asiatic Lion Census conducted earlier this month. The latest figures signal a resounding success for Gujarats wildlife conservation efforts, reaffirming the states position as the last natural habitat of the endangered species. PM Modi praised the effort of Gujarat government. The big cats, once largely confined to Gir National Park, are now sprawling across 11 districts of the Saurashtra region including non-forested and coastal zones, a testament to their expanding territory and rising numbers. The number of lions in the state has gradually increased not just because of favorable geography and climate, but due to our government's consistent and careful approach to wildlife conservation, said the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Providing a detailed account, he noted, There were 327 lions in 2001, 359 in 2005, 411 in 2010, 523 in 2015, and 674 in 2020. Today, the lion population stands at 891. He further credited the shift in census methodology to Prime Minister Narendra Modis leadership, saying, As Chief Minister, Shri Narendrabhai Modi introduced the 'Total Count by Direct Sighting at Block System' method, replacing the traditional estimation model. Prime Minister praised the effort. Very exciting information! It's truly gratifying to see that the efforts under 'Project Lion' are creating a favorable environment and ensuring the protection of lions in Gujarat, the Prime Minister posted on social media platform X. The 2020 census had pegged the number at 674, all within Gir and surrounding areas. The latest count reveals not just a population boom but also a major geographical shift: 507 lions were spotted outside Girs boundaries, while 384 remain within the traditional sanctuary limits, according to Jaipal Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. The lion stronghold now includes protected areas like Pania, Mitiyala, Girnar, and Barda sanctuaries. Notably, 17 lions were recorded in Barda, just 15 km from Porbandar, while Bhavnagar district reported the largest single pride 17 lions in one group. The demographic breakdown, provided by the Gujarat Forest Department, estimates 196 males, 330 females, 140 sub-adults, and 225 cubs, painting a robust picture of the species health and future. This extensive wildlife mapping was the result of a meticulous four-day census conducted from May 10 to 13 across 58 talukas, covering 35,000 sq km. The operation, carried out in two phases, involved over 3,000 volunteers including forest officials, enumerators, and inspectors. For the first time, officials deployed a refined method known as direct beat verification, praised for its near-zero margin of error and 100% accuracy, made possible by hi-tech tools like camera traps, high-resolution imaging, GPS tracking, and radio collars. The lion census, conducted every five years, documented key data like time of sighting, direction of movement, physical identifiers, and precise GPS coordinates. The 11 districts where lions were sighted are: Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Morbi, Surendranagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Amreli, Porbandar, and Botad. This dramatic expansion of habitat and population underscores both the resilience of the Asiatic lion and the rigorous conservation efforts undertaken by the Gujarat Forest Department a rare ecological triumph in the modern era. Physically challenged man killed after confronting intruders in disabled coach in Gujarat; two arrested

AHMEDABAD: A 35-year-old disabled man was thrown off a moving train near Jamnagar after confronting two intruders who has unlawfully entered a coach reserved for disabled passengers. The victim, identified as Hitesh Mistry of Vadodara, was returning home from Porbandar on Tuesday night, accompanied by a disabled friend with the Saurashtra Express. According to Jamnagar railway police, the altercation unfolded between Porbandar and Jamnagar when the duo, identified as Haji Ayyub Kachhiya and Saddam Kasam, entered the specially designated coach. When Mistry objected to their presence, a heated argument broke out. The confrontation quickly escalated as the accused reportedly assaulted Mistry and, moments later, pushed him off the moving train before it reached Hapa station. As the violence erupted, Mistry's friend, also a disabled passenger, got down at Jamnagar station to seek help. However, unable to find a police official before the train resumed its journey, he was forced to re-board another compartment. Upon reaching Hapa, he rushed back to the special coach only to find Mistry and the two men missing. Alarmed, he alerted railway police at Hapa and filed a formal complaint. A few hours later, on Wednesday morning, Mistrys body was found under the Gulabnagar railway over-bridge near Jamnagar city. While the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, authorities acted swiftly. By Thursday, police had arrested Haji Ayyub Kachhiya. She said, One of the accused, Haji Ayyub Kachhiya, was arrested immediately at Hapa station, while the second accused, Saddam Kasam, initially fled but was caught within a few hours of the case being registered. Both are currently in police custody and further investigation is underway, she added. Let there be light: Blackout lifted in Gujarat border areas after India-Pakistan ceasefire

AHMEDABAD: A blackout enforced across Gujarats border districts was lifted on Saturday following a sudden ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan . The temporary shutdown came after a wave of drone incursions and cross-border strikes heightened tensions in the region. The flare-up began early on May 8, when the Indian Army shot down a suspected Pakistani drone over an empty plot in East Kutch, scattering debris across nearby fields. Authorities immediately launched an investigation to confirm whether the object was a drone or a missile, deepening anxiety along the already volatile frontier. According to sources, the Army had intercepted a total of five drones near the India-Pakistan border in Gujarats Kutch district. Two of them were brought down in Abdasa taluka, one intercepted earlier, and another shot down in Lakhpat, where locals reported hearing a loud explosion. In Lakhpat, three drones were detected approaching Indian territory, with video footage of the sightings quickly making rounds on social media. Though the drones later vanished from sight, fresh movements were observed near another sector along the border. Around 11 p.m., drones were again spotted near the northern edge of Kutch, the same area where a drone had been shot down earlier. On the morning of May 10, the Indian Army intercepted yet another drone near the Kutch border. The blackout, imposed as a precautionary measure, was lifted soon after the ceasefire was announced, bringing momentary relief to the tense border communities.

Explained: Operation Sindoor aftermath and how it has impacted flights in India

Following Operation Sindoor and heightened security concerns, India's air travel sector has been hit. The closure of 30 airports across several states has left hundreds of flights cancelled and thousands of travellers stranded or scrambling for alternatives. Here's a breakdown of the current situation. What triggered the disruption? The disruption stems from the closure of operations at several civilian airports many of which double as military airfields after India conducted precision strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in the wee hours of May 7. Operation Sindoor: Nine strikes, 25 minutes of chaos for Pakistan Fearing potential retaliation post these strikes, the Indian government suspended operations at critical airports in the North, Northwest, and Central regions of the country. Which airports are affected? The closure impacts airports in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and the Delhi NCR region. Notable airports shut down include: J&K & Ladakh : Leh, Thoise, Srinagar, Jammu Punjab : Amritsar, Pathankot, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Halwara, Chandigarh. Himachal Pradesh : Dharamshala, Shimla, Bhuntar, Gaggal Rajasthan : Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Kishangarh, Bikaner Gujarat : Bhuj, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Mundra, Kandla, Keshod Others : Hindon (Delhi NCR), Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) Airlines expect the disruption to last at least until 5:29 AM on May 10, though airport sources hint it may continue longer. How are airlines responding? Major airlines have rolled out large-scale cancellations and advisories: IndiGo has suspended 165 daily flights, including those from Amritsar, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Gwalior, Jammu, Jodhpur, Leh, and Srinagar. Air India has cancelled flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot. SpiceJet has stopped operations in Leh, Srinagar, Jammu, Dharamshala, Kandla, and Amritsar. Akasa Air has cancelled flights from Srinagar. Passengers holding tickets for these routes have been offered full refunds. Impact on flyers Travellers are experiencing severe stress due to abrupt cancellations, particularly those with connecting flights. Entire itineraries are being disrupted when the primary leg of the journey is cancelled, as seen in multiple cases. R Sushmita, travelling from Himachal to Nagpur via Chandigarh and Delhi, had to reroute by train to Delhi due to a cancelled Air India flight. Fortunately, Air India issued a fresh ticket at no extra cost. Piyush Sawarkar, stuck in Leh with his family, tweeted for help after his Indigo flight to Mumbai was cancelled. Like many others, he received a standard airline response requesting his PNR via direct message. Social media platforms of airlines have been flooded with similar distress calls, and many passengers are still awaiting clarity and rebooking options. A necessary safety measure According to Captain CS Randhawa, President of the Federation of Indian Pilots Association, while the inconvenience is considerable, the move was necessary from a national security perspective. The government wants flyers to stay safe. Closure of air force bases wont impact the public directly since civilian aircraft dont usually operate there, he said. However, international carriers are significantly affected. To avoid Pakistani airspace, flights from the Gulf to Delhi are forced to take detours. For instance, British Airways, Air France, and KLM from Delhi are heading towards Mumbai and then rerouting through Turkey, with longer flight paths and additional operational costs, he explained. Whats next? The situation remains fluid. Airlines and airport authorities are monitoring developments, but flyers should be prepared for ongoing disruptions beyond May 10. Travellers are advised to stay updated through official airline channels and plan alternate routes where possible.

Gujarat on high alert as India-Pakistan tensions escalate; four airports shut, security tightened

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat was thrust into high alert following Indias air strike on Pakistan, triggering sweeping security measures and major disruptions across the state. In a decisive move, Rajkot International Airport was ordered shut for three days, while operations at Bhuj, Keshod, Kandla, and Jamnagar airports were suspended to fortify security near sensitive zones. Ripple effects spread quickly, and Ahmedabad Airport cancelled all outbound flights to Bhuj, Jamnagar, and Rajkot, tightening the noose on regional air traffic. Ground security intensified sharply as border areas witnessed ramped-up checks by security forces, adding to the tense atmosphere. At Keshod Airport, authorities extended the shutdown until May 10, halting the three weekly flights that typically serviced the region, and clearing the runway exclusively for Navy and Air Force operations. Bhuj and Kandla airports followed suit, announcing a complete closure for the next three days; notably, Bhuj Airport shuttered first, soon prompting Kandlas suspension as a precautionary step. National carriers scrambled to respond: Air India announced on X that it was cancelling flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot until 5:29 PM on May 10, offering passengers a one-time rescheduling waiver or full refunds. Local authorities confirmed the turmoil, the Bhuj Airport spokesperson revealed that all eight daily flights, including two to Mumbai, one to Delhi, and one to Ahmedabad, were axed. Meanwhile, although Kandla airport remained open initially, it too eventually ceased operations. The domino effect reached Rajkot, where all 11 daily flights operated by IndiGo and Air India were cancelled on May 7, stranding more than 3,200 passengers1,500 incoming and 1,700 outgoingcausing widespread travel chaos. The cancellations hit routes to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, paralysing regional connectivity. Heightened vigilance extended to the coastline as well, with the SOG Marine Police and Marine Task Force Commandos intensifying boat patrols and security sweeps along Jamnagars coastal belt. Amid the growing disruption, Ahmedabad Airport issued an urgent advisory, warning passengers of potential flight delays and cancellations, and urging them to verify flight statuses before heading to the airport.

SC quashes FIR against Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi over his 'provocative' social media post

NEW DELHI: In a major relief to Congress Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi, the Supreme Court on Friday quashed the FIR and criminal proceedings initiated by the Gujarat police against him over his social media post featuring the poem Ae Khoon Ke Pyase Baat Suno. The two-judge bench, led by Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, stated, No offence is made out against Pratapgarhi, and ruled that the police must first understand the meaning of written or spoken words before lodging an FIR in such cases. The bench emphasised that the Constitution allows reasonable restrictions on the freedom of speech and expression, but these restrictions should not be unreasonable or used to trample on citizens' rights. The court further explained that written or spoken expressions should be evaluated from the perspective of a reasonable person, not from those who perceive criticism as a threat to their power and status. Its ultimately a poem, not against any religion: SC questions Gujarat govt over FIR against Cong MP Imran Pratapgarhi The Supreme Court also highlighted the importance of various forms of art, including poetry, drama, music, and satire, which add meaning to human life. It stated that people should be granted the freedom to express themselves through these mediums. The court delivered its judgment on Pratapgarhi's appeal after reserving the verdict on March 3. The FIR had been filed against Pratapgarhi after he allegedly posted a 46-second video on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on December 29, 2023, featuring the poem Ae Khoon Ke Pyase Baat Suno. Earlier , the apex court had noted that freedom of speech and expression must be understood by the police at least now, after 75 years of the Constitution. The court had also observed that the poem Ae Khoon Ke Pyase Baat Suno promoted a message of non-violence and criticized the police for their lack of sensitivity in lodging the FIR. The court explained that the poem had nothing to do with religion or anti-national activity and actually conveyed a message of non-violence. It pointed out that the poem suggested that even in the face of injustice and loss, one should respond with love and acceptance. The Supreme Court had earlier questioned the Gujarat Police's actions, noting that the poem was ultimately a message of peace and not against any religion It emphasized that the poem conveyed a message of non-violence, even in situations involving violence, and that it was not aimed at any particular community. The case began when a resident of Jamnagar filed an FIR against Pratapgarhi, alleging that his social media post, which included a provocative song, was detrimental to national integrity and hurt religious sentiments. Pratapgarhi moved the Gujarat High Court to quash the FIR, arguing that the poem spread a message of love and non-violence. However, the Gujarat High Court refused to quash the FIR, stating that further investigation was needed and accusing Pratapgarhi of not cooperating with the investigation process. Subsequently, Pratapgarhi approached the Supreme Court for relief. The FIR, registered on January 3, 2024, accused Pratapgarhi of promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, and other charges related to national integration. Pratapgarhi vehemently denied the allegations.

SC to deliver verdict on Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhis plea to quash FIR over poem post

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on Friday on an appeal filed by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi, seeking to quash an FIR registered against him by the Gujarat Police for posting a poem on social media. A two-judge bench, comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, had reserved its judgment on Pratapgarhi's plea on 3 March and will now pronounce its decision. During an earlier hearing, the apex court observed that the police must understand the significance of the freedom of speech and expression at least now after 75 years of the Constitution. When it comes to the freedom of speech and expression, it has to be preserved, the court had remarked. The FIR alleged that Pratapgarhi had posted a 46-second video clip of the poem on 29 December on his X handle, with the lyrics Ae khoon ke pyase baat suno... playing in the background. Its ultimately a poem, not against any religion: SC questions Gujarat govt over FIR against Cong MP Imran Pratapgarhi However, the bench noted that the poem actually conveyed a message of non-violence and criticised the police for their lack of sensitivity in filing the FIR. This actually promotes non-violence. It has nothing to do with religion, this has nothing to do with any anti-national activity. Police have shown a lack of sensitivity, the bench had said, reprimanding the Gujarat Police. The court further expressed concern over the diminishing respect for creativity, stating, This is the problemnow nobody has any respect for creativity. If you read it plainly, it says that even if you suffer injustice, suffer it with love, even if people die, we will accept it. The Supreme Court had earlier questioned the Gujarat Polices decision to register an FIR, asserting that it is ultimately a poem and ot against any religion. It's ultimately a poem. It is not against any religion. This poem indirectly says even if somebody indulges in violence, we will not indulge in violence. That's the message which the poem gives. It is not against any particular community, the bench had observed. 'Provocative' song case: SC stays case against Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi On 21 January, the apex court granted interim relief to Pratapgarhi, who was accused of promoting communal disharmony by posting the video. A Jamnagar resident had filed a complaint against the Congress MP, alleging that the poem was provocative, detrimental to national integrity, and hurt religious sentiments. Pratapgarhi initially approached the Gujarat High Court seeking to quash the FIR, arguing that the poem spreads a message of love. However, the High Court refused to quash the case, stating that here was a need for further investigation and that the MP had ot cooperated with the investigation process. Following this, Pratapgarhi moved the Supreme Court for relief. The FIR, registered on 3 January by the Jamnagar police, booked Pratapgarhi under charges of promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, statements prejudicial to national integration, and abetting an offence involving a group of more than ten people. Pratapgarhi has vehemently denied these allegations.

Gujarat shuts 54 government primary schools across 33 districts as student numbers plunge

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government informed the Assembly on February 25, 2025, that 54 government primary schools across 33 districts had been shut down in the past two years due to plummeting student enrollment. The disclosure, made by Primary, Secondary, and Adult Education Minister, came in response to a question by Congress MLA Kirit Patel (Patan), exposing a deepening education crisis in the state. Schools Vanishing Across Districts Devbhoomi Dwarka led the shutdowns with nine closures, followed by Aravalli (7), Amreli (6), and Porbandar (6)each grappling with a sharp decline in student numbers. Junagadh recorded four closures, while Chhota Udepur, Kutch, and Rajkot saw three schools shut down each, signaling the widespread impact. Kheda, Jamnagar, and Navsari followed with two closures per district, further tightening the noose on struggling institutions. The crisis didnt spare Bhavnagar, Dang, Gir Somnath, Mahesana, Panchmahal, Surat, and Surendranagar, each losing one primary school, underscoring a grim picture of shrinking educational access. Single-Classroom Schools and Crumbling Infrastructure Beyond school closures, infrastructure woes continue to haunt Gujarats education system. In February 2024, the government admitted in the Assembly that 341 primary schools were operating with just one room, responding to a query from Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar. Justifying the appalling conditions, officials blamed low student and teacher numbers, arguing that fewer classrooms were necessary. However, the situation is exacerbated by the demolition of dilapidated rooms, with authorities citing a lack of available land as the reason new classrooms cannot be built, leaving students crammed into single-room facilities with no solution in sight. 1,606 Schools Run with Just One Teacher In another shocking disclosure on February 12, 2024, the Gujarat government admitted in the Assembly that 1,606 of the state's 32,000 government primary schools were running with only one teacher handling all students from Classes 1 to 8. The staggering figure highlights a severe staffing crisis in Gujarats education system, where thousands of students struggle for basic instruction in understaffed schools. Playgrounds Vanishing, Holistic Development at Risk The infrastructure crisis doesnt stop at classrooms. The government further revealed that 5,012 government primary schools across Gujarat lack a playground, depriving students of crucial recreational space. The situation in secondary and higher secondary schools is equally alarming, with 78 government, 315 grant-in-aid, and 255 private institutions operating without playgrounds, despite Gujarat housing around 12,700 such schools. Even private institutions are not spared, as 37 grant-in-aid and 509 private primary schools also lack on-campus playgrounds, highlighting a systemic neglect of student development. With shrinking school infrastructure, collapsing student enrollment, and teacher shortages, Gujarats education sector is facing one of its most severe crises in recent history.

Anti-Terrorism Squad seizes Rs 482 crore worth of narcotics in past two years in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government in the Assembly on March 17 revealed that the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) seized a staggering Rs 482 crore worth of narcotics from the state's waters in the past two years. As of December 31, 2024, the haul includes 60.3 kg of methamphetamine valued at Rs 422.12 crore, 173 kg of charas worth Rs 60.55 crore, and 460 grams of heroin pegged at Rs 2.3 crore. The government also admitted that only six individuals have been arrested in connection with these drug smuggling cases so far. The Home Ministry replied to a query by BJPs Jamnagar North MLA Rivaba Jadeja in the Gujarat Assembly. The government had earlier responded to a query in the Lok Sabha in February 2025, revealing a fluctuating yet alarming trend in NDPS-related arrests over the past six years. The crackdown saw 453 arrests in 2019, rising to 495 in 2020 before surging to a peak of 876 in 2021. While the numbers dipped slightly to 849 in 2022 and 803 in 2023, they remained significantly high, with 757 individuals arrested in 2024. While the government has cracked down hard on drug-related crimes with hundreds of arrests under the NDPS Act, conviction rates remain glaring. Official data presented in the Lok Sabha revealed a significant gap -- the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) secured just one conviction in 2019, followed by four in 2020, four in 2021, two in 2022, a marginal spike to 11 in 2023, and back to four in 2024 (provisional data) despite soaring arrests. The stark contrast raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the prosecution in the fight against drug trafficking. However, the government has set up a four-tier Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) to boost coordination between central and state drug enforcement agencies. An integrated NCORD portal has also been launched to streamline drug law enforcement data. To track major drug bust investigations, a Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) led by the NCB Director General has been established, reinforcing Indias crackdown on narcotics.

Reshuffle: RSS grip tightens in Gujarat BJP

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat BJP shook up its leadership on Thursday, appointing 35 district and metropolitan presidents. Notably, 34%a dozen namesare repeat selections, sparking a buzz within party ranks. The reshuffle, party insiders claim, favors state BJP chief CR Patils camp and leaders aligned with the RSS. Many appointments, party sources suggest, hinge on personal equations and strategic backing from state heavyweights. Thus the selection process for Gujarat BJPs district and metropolitan presidents has turned out to be mere formality. Of the 35 names declared, a staggering 22 have ties to BJPs ideological affiliatesRSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, and ABVPfueling talk that the Sangh had a decisive hand in the appointments. Notably, only one woman secured a spot, leading Jamnagar city. The organization initiated its selection process in January, with over 1,300 contenders vying for positions. However, the final list has triggered murmurs among party workers, who claim the so-called election process was overridden. The dominance of regional power players ensured the return of several old faces, while personal equations dictated key placements. The reshuffle, many argue, reflects influence more than merit. The BJP's latest list of district and metropolitan presidents, released Thursday, left key appointments pending in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Kheda, Porbandar, and Panchmahal. With the national BJP presidents election set for March 20, the state BJP chiefs appointment will wait until after Holi. Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav, designated as the election observer, is expected in Gujarat next week to formalize the selection process. Before initiating the election process, the BJP set rules on age limits and organizational experience. Yet, four of the 35 newly appointed presidents lack any organizational background. Their common link? All are tied to the Sanghs affiliate groups. Meanwhile, Surat Metropolitan City President Paresh Patel, neither experienced nor connected to the Sangh, reportedly secured his position through his proximity to state BJP chief C.R. Patilfueling murmurs of power-driven placements over merit-based selections. The BJPs latest appointments reveal a clear caste tilt, with 60%or 21 out of 35presidents coming from upper-caste groups. This includes Leuva Patel (5), Kadva Patel (4), Jain (4), Brahmin (2), and six from other upper-caste backgrounds. Among the nine OBC leaders selected, Thakors dominate with three, followed by Nadoda and Kardia Rajputs (2 each), while Ghanchi, Barot, Gadhvi, and Ahir communities secured one spot each. The representation thins further with just four tribal leaders and a single Dalit appointee. Notably absent are Kolis and Anjana Chaudharystwo major OBC voting blocsraising questions about the BJPs strategic caste calculus.aid, and market linkages.

After 10 years, PM Modi gives green signal for 16th Asiatic Lion population census

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the 16th population estimation of the Asiatic lion, set to take place in May this year. This decision was made during the seventh National Wildlife Board (NWLB) meeting held in Sasan, Gujarat. The 16th Asiatic Lion population estimation was scheduled for June 2020. However, it had to be suspended indefinitely because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The in-house monthly estimation shows that the number of lions was 674, which is up by 151 from the 15th Lions population estimation for the 2015 Census. Asiatic lions' natural habitat is only in the Gir Forest of Gujarat. So far, the Lion's population has doubled since 2001, and its distribution has expanded from 22,000 sq. km in 2015 to 30,000 sq. km in 2020 across 53 talukas in nine districts of Gujarat. The central government has approved more than Rs 2,900 crore for Project Lion, which is meant to conserve Asiatic lions, of which Gujarat is the only abode. Soon after completing his lion safari at Gir National Park in the morning, Modi headed for the NBWL meeting at Sasan in Gujarat's Junagadh district. Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and other members attended the meeting. On the occasion, Modi laid the foundation stone for the National Referral Centre-Wildlife at Junagadh. On Sunday, he also visited Vantara, an animal rescue, conservation, and rehabilitation center at the Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex. He also announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Human-Wildlife Conflict Management, SACON, at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and unveiled a book on river dolphins. The NBWL, a statutory body that advises the government on wildlife conservation, has 47 members, including the Chief of Army Staff, members from different states, representatives from NGOs working in this field, chief wildlife wardens, and secretaries from various states. After the safari, Modi, in a post on X, said the population of Asiatic lions has seen a steady rise due to collective efforts and commended the contribution of tribals and women living in surrounding areas in preserving the lion habitat. This morning, on #WorldWildlifeDay, I went on a Safari in Gir, which, as we all know, is home to the majestic Asiatic Lion. Coming to Gir also brings back many memories of the work we collectively did when I was serving as Gujarat CM, he said. Poem not anti-national, police must read, understand: Supreme Court on Congress MP Pratapgarhis plea

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday reserved the verdict on an appeal filed by Congress MP from Rajya Sabha, Imran Pratapgarhi seeking a direction to quash an FIR against him for allegedly sharing a provocative song, as it observed that the freedom of speech and expression had to be understood by the police at least now after 75 years of the Constitution. When it comes to the freedom of speech and expression, it has to be preserved, said, a two-judge bench of the apex court, led by Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan. The FIR said that the Rajya Sabha MP was booked after he allegdly posted the 46-second video clip / poem on December 29 on X handle with a poem A khoon ke pyase baat suno... running in the background. During the course of the hearing on Monday, the bench observed that the poem Ae khoon ke pyase baat suno was actually propagating a message of non-violence and said that the police ought to have shown sensitivity before lodging the FIR. This actually promotes non-violence. It has nothing to do with religion, this has nothing to do with any anti-national activity. The police has shown lack of sensitivity, the bench said and slammed the Gujarat Police for its action in booking Pratapgarhi. The apex court further observed that this was the problem - now nobody has any respect for creativity. If you read it plainly it says that even if you suffer injustice, suffer it with love, even if people die, we will accept it. It's ultimately a poem. It is not against any religion. This poem indirectly says even if somebody indulges in violence, we will not indulge in violence. That's the message that the poem gives. It is not against any particular community, the top court bench, in its order. On January 21, the top court had earlier granted relief to Pratapgarhi, who is facing allegations of promoting communal disharmony by posting a video clip on his social media handle. A resident from Jamnagar, after being aggrieved by the posting of Pratapgarhi, filed an FIR alleging that the lawmaker used a song which was provocative, detrimental to national integrity and hurtful to religious sentiments. Pratapgarhi had to move the Gujarat High Court for quashing the FIR, saying that the poem, based on which the FIR was filed, is a poem spreading a message of love. In the HC, the Congress MP argued that eading of the song poem, it is a message of love and non-violence. But the HC refused to quash the FIR and said in its order that here was need for further investigation and that he had not cooperated with the investigation process. Then, Pratapgarhi had moved the apex court, for relief. The FIR, registered against Pratapgarhi, on January 03, said, he was booked by Jamnagar police for promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, statements prejudicial to national integration, abetting the commission of an offense by the public or by a group of more than ten people, among other charges. Whereas, Pratapgarhi vehemently denied these allegations.
