Ranji Trophy: Ishan Kishan's Fighting Century, Shamis Three Wickets Highlights Of Day 1

With Vicky Ostwal: A flawless opening hour saw Kerala bowlers M.D. Nidheesh and N.P. Basil scythed through the Maharashtra top order with swing and bounce, putting the hosts in command at the end of the opening days play in their Ranji Trophy 2025-26 clash at the Sports Hub, Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. After being reduced to a disastrous 18 for five, Maharashtra were pulled out of the mire by Ruturaj Gaikwad (91, 151b, 11x4) and Jalaj Saxena (49, 106b, 4x4), who combined to add 122 runs for the sixth wicket. Their partnership not only steadied the innings but also ensured that the visitors crossed the 150-run mark before bad light and rain forced early stumps with Maharashtra at 179 for seven, 37 minutes after tea. Earlier, Kerala captain Mohammed Azharuddeens decision to bowl first proved inspired. Nidheesh struck gold with the new ball, trapping Prithvi Shaw (0) lbw with a sharp inswinger in the very first over. Moments later, Siddesh Veer (0) feathered an edge to the keeper to leave Maharashtra reeling at 0 for two. Basil joined the carnage, generating a steep bounce that caught Arshin Kulkarni (0) by surprise his edge was brilliantly pouched by Rohan Kunnummal at second slip. Basil then had skipper Ankit Bawne (0) chopping on, plunging the visitors into deeper trouble at 5 for 4. With Nidheeshs inswing continuing to trouble the batters, Nawale too fell leg-before, making it 18 for five inside the first hour. That brought Jalaj Saxena, facing his former teammates, to the crease. Jalaj was positive from the outset, finding gaps and using his feet against spin, while Gaikwad settled into his rhythm with crisp drives and firm cuts. The pair frustrated Keralas bowlers for nearly two sessions. Gaikwads composure stood out; he struck consecutive boundaries off Edhen to bring up his fifty and continued to pierce the gaps smartly. Just as Maharashtra seemed to regain control, Nidheesh trapped Jalaj lbw for 49, breaking the century stand. Soon after, Edhen, who recovered from an erratic first spell, got rid of Gaikwad the right-hander was a fraction late as the ball thudded into his pads. With Vicky Ostwal (10*) and Ramakrishna Ghosh (11*) steadying things, light deteriorated rapidly, forcing the umpires to call it a day. The honours of the day, though, belonged to Keralas opening bowlers, who tore through Maharashtras top order before Gaikwads valiant fightback saved the visitors from total collapse. Karnataka vs Saurashtra A blend of youthful ambition and seasoned composure was on full display as Devdutt Padikkal (96, 141b, 11x4) and Karun Nair (73, 126b, 9x4) orchestrated a vital 146-run third-wicket partnership, steering Karnataka into a strong position on Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy opener against Saurashtra at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. After electing to bat under clear skies, Karnataka were rocked early by the discipline of Saurashtras pacers Jaydev Unadkat and Chetan Sakariya. Skipper Mayank Agarwal and S. Nikin Jose found scoring difficult against the testing lines, and Dharmendra Jadejas early introduction of spin proved decisive. The left-arm spinner struck in the 10th over to remove Mayank and added Nikins wicket soon after, leaving Karnataka tottering at **26 for two. At that point, Padikkal and Karun Nair showed remarkable maturity to rebuild. The duo began cautiously, focusing on strike rotation and punishing anything loose. Padikkal, in particular, mixed elegance with intent cutting and driving fluently once he settled in. Karuns experience came to the fore as he anchored the partnership, using soft hands and quick singles to defuse the pressure. As the day wore on, the pair grew more confident. Both brought up their half-centuries in style, forcing the Saurashtra bowlers onto the back foot. However, just as Padikkal looked set for a century, Jadeja struck again, trapping Karun plumb in front and later castling Padikkal for 96 his fourth wicket of the day. Later, K.L. Shrijith fell cheaply, but R. Smaran (66*, 120b, 4x4, 2x6) and Shreyas Gopal (38*, 69b, 2x4, 2x6) added an unbeaten 81-run stand* for the sixth wicket to take Karnataka to 295 for five at stumps. The partnership gave the visitors a sense of control after the early wobble, ensuring they ended the day well placed. Shami stars in Bengal vs Uttarakhand clash A dramatic late burst from Mohammed Shami, who claimed three wickets in an over, helped Bengal bowl out Uttarakhand for 213 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy fixture at Eden Gardens. For much of the day, Bengals bowling honours belonged to Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal (19-4-54-4) and Ishan Porel (15-3-40-3). Shami, returning to red-ball action after the Duleep Trophy, looked off-rhythm in the first two sessions but turned it on spectacularly in his 15th over to clean up the tail and wrap up the innings. Opting to bowl first on a grassy surface, Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran* deployed a four-man pace attack Shami, Akash Deep, Porel, and Jaiswal. The first breakthrough came from Porel, who had *Avneesh Sudha caught at second slip by Anustup Majumdar. Jaiswal followed up with a peach of an outswinger to remove Prashant Chopra, and later, he bowled Uttarakhand skipper Kunal Chandela (7) to leave the visitors at 76 for three at lunch. After the break, Bhupen Lalwani (71) tried to rebuild, sharing a 54-run stand with Yuvraj Singh, but Bengals seamers kept striking at regular intervals. Jaiswal and Porel struck in tandem to dismantle the middle order, before Shami, reintroduced from the High Court End, cleaned up No. 9, 10, and 11 in quick succession. In reply, Bengals chase began shakily as Easwaran was dismissed off the first ball, caught behind off Devendra Bora. At stumps, Bengal were 8 for 1, with Sudip Gharami (7*) and Sudip Chatterjee (1*) unbeaten, trailing by 205 runs. Tamil Nadu vs Jharkhand Ishan Kishan roared back into first-class form with a defiant, counterattacking unbeaten 125 off 183 balls, rescuing Jharkhand from a precarious situation on Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy match against Tamil Nadu at Chepauk. At one stage, Jharkhand were struggling, having lost half their side before crossing 160, but Kishans aggressive intent and positive strokeplay turned the tide. Alongside Sahil Raj (64, unbeaten), the wicketkeeper-batter stitched a 150-run unbroken stand for the seventh wicket, guiding his team to 307 for six at stumps. Only three districts now most affected by Naxalism: MHA

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday said that the districts most affected by Naxalism have been brought down to three. Now, only Bijapur, Sukma and Narayanpur in Chhattisgarh are the most affected districts by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), the ministry said in a statement that came as 88 members of CPI (Maoist) surrendered in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra in yet another success for the anti-Naxal campaign. In a giant stride towards the Modi government's vision of building a Naxal-free Bharat, the number of districts most affected by Naxalism has been brought down to three from six, the ministry said. In the category of LWE affected districts, the number has also been further brought down to just 11 from 18. These 11 districts that are Left Wing Extremism affected, including the three most affected, are: Bijapur, Dantewada, Gariyaband, Kanker, Mohalla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki, Narayanpur and Sukma (all Chhattisgarh), West Singhbhum (Jharkhand), Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh), Gadchiroli (Maharashtra) and Kandhamal (Odisha). The Modi government is committed to completely eradicating the Naxal menace by the 31st of March 2026, the statement reiterated. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the operational successes have surpassed all previous records this year wherein 312 LWE cadres have been eliminated, including CPI (Maoist) General Secretary and 08 other Polit Bureau/ Central Committee Members, the MHA said. As many as 836 LWE cadres have been arrested and 1,639 have surrendered and joined the mainstream. The surrendered Naxalites include one Politburo Member and a Central Committee Member. Under the Modi government, unprecedented success has been achieved in combating the Naxal menace through rigorous implementation of the National Action Plan and Policy, which envisages a multi-pronged approach, the statement said. The action plan includes precise intelligence-based and people-friendly counter-LWE operations. These steps were accompanied by swift domination of areas with a security vacuum, targeting of top leaders as well as over-ground workers, countering the nefarious ideology, rapid development of infrastructure and saturation of welfare schemes, choking of finances, enhanced coordination between states and centre governments and accelerated investigation and prosecution of Maoist-related cases. Once called India's iggest internal security challenge by the then prime minister in 2010, Naxalism is now visibly retreating. Naxals had planned a Red Corridor - stretching from Pashupati in Nepal to Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, the statement said. In 2013, 126 districts from different states reported Naxal-related violence but by March 2025, this tally had fallen to just 18 districts, with only six classified as 'Most Affected Districts', it said.

Maoists torch another mobile tower during Resistance Week in Jharkhands Saranda jungles

RANCHI: Registering their presence once again in the Saranda jungles, the CPI (Maoists) unleashed violence by setting ablaze another mobile tower in Bahda village under the Chotanagara area late on Monday night, creating panic among locals. Earlier on Saturday, the Maoists had torched a mobile tower in Kolbonga village under the Jaraikela police station area. These attacks coincide with the Maoists Resistance Week, being observed by them across five states, including Jharkhand. According to locals, more than a dozen armed cadres of the CPI (Maoists) arrived in the village late on Monday night and set the mobile tower on fire. First, they warned people not to leave their homes, then poured petrol on the panels and battery equipment within the tower premises before setting them ablaze, they said. The villagers said that within a short time, the entire tower was engulfed in flames. The sound of explosions continued until around 1 am, terrifying the entire village, they said. The Maoists also left several posters and pamphlets at the site, threatening to avenge their slain comrades. They also called for a major crackdown on October 15 in Jharkhand, Bihar, northern Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Assam. The burning of the tower has completely disrupted the mobile network in Bahda and surrounding areas, causing significant inconvenience to the villagers. Essential services such as mobile calls, UPI payments, banking, and children's online education have been affected. Chaibasa SP Amit Renu asserted that a group of Maoists torched a mobile tower and pasted posters in Bahda village, under the Chotanagara police station area, on Monday night. This is the second such act in a few days, reflecting the insurgents' frustration against the ongoing combing operation against Left Wing Extremists. They have also put up posters asking for a halt to the police operation. We will continue this operation with greater vigour in collaboration with paramilitary forces, said the SP. Notably, the incident site is just a few kilometres from the Chotanagara police station and security camp, yet the Maoists allegedly created havoc for an hour and a half without any fear. The villagers remain in a state of panic, fearing that the Maoists may attack again.

Jharkhand: Huge cache of arms and ammunitions recovered from Maoist hideout

RANCHI: Security forces have recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from a Maoist hideout during a search operation conducted in the border areas of Bokaro and Hazaribagh. The operation was carried out by a joint team of Jharkhand Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The recovered items include two SLR rifles, magazines, a large number of cartridges, backpacks, clothing, and various daily-use items. This recovery is considered crucial in foiling a major Maoist conspiracy. The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs indicating that a group of Maoists was camping in the dense forest and plotting a significant strike in the region. Hazaribagh SP Anjani Anjan confirmed that the operation was based on intelligence suggesting that some members of the Maoist organization were active in the forest area bordering Bokaro and Hazaribagh. To verify the information, a joint operation by the CRPF and district police was immediately launched in the region. During the search, weapons and other items were recovered from a hideout in the forest, said the SP. He also highlighted the crucial role played by the CRPF in the operation. Following the recovery, security forces have intensified combing operations in the region. Additional personnel have been deployed in the forest areas to monitor possible Maoist movements, and continuous patrolling is being conducted along the border areas. According to reports, armed Maoists went to the village and threatened and drove away the people near the tower and set the mobile tower on fire after pouring petrol on it. Following the incident, mobile network services in the area has been disrupted completely and people are facing problems due to the communication outage. Earlier on Friday, the Maoists targeted security forces by triggering four IED blasts, in which Head Constable Mahendra Laskar was killed, while two officers were seriously injured. Both injured were airlifted to a hospital in Delhi on Saturday. Notably, Maoists are observing Resistance Week from October 8 to 14 in Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Assam. They have also announced a one-day bandh on October 15 .

Fourth elephant dies in IED blast in Jharkhand's Saranda forests

RANCHI: The elephant, which got injured in an IED blast in the Saranda jungles of Chaibasa on October 6, finally succumbed to its injuries early in the morning on Sunday. This is the fourth elephant that died in an IED blast in Saranda within the last three months; three of them died during treatment, while another one was found dead in the jungles. Notably, Maoists are now restricted only to the Saranda jungles in Jharkhand as they have been whipped out from other pockets of the state. According to an estimate, around 60-65 Maoists are supposed to be hiding in the Saranda jungles, where they have planted thousands of IEDs, which has become a challenge for the security forces. The IEDs planted by Maoists in the Saranda jungles are not a challenge only for the security forces, but it has also become a potential threat to the wild animals. According to Saranda Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Aviroop Sinha, despite the best medical treatment being provided by the experts from Vantara in Gujarat, they could not save the life of the female elephant. The elephant succumbed to its injuries early in the morning on Friday, at around 1:30 am to 2:00 am, despite the fact that it was being provided best medical facilities. It had severe wounds on its front right limb, said the DFO. It is yet to be confirmed whether the elephant got injured by an IED blast or not, but prima facie, looking at the pattern of the wounds, it appears that the injury was caused by an IED blast, he added. The DFO further added that, the elephant was first spotted in the Ankua of Saranda Jungles, following which it was rescued and taken to a safer place for treatment. The injured elephant was a female approximately 10 to 12 years old, and was unable to walk due to the severe injury on its front limb, he said. The DFO informed that, the elephant, which allegedly stepped on an IED in the Saranda Forests, had suffered heavy blood loss from the wound on the right forelimb. Four teams of veterinary doctors from Jharkhand and Odisha were attending to the wounded elephant. A team of veterinary surgeons from Vantara in Gujarat, which also reached here on Tuesday night, was keeping a close eye on it, said the DFO. When the monitoring teams reached the spot in the morning, the elephant was found dead, he added. Since November 2022, after the state police launched a joint operation in Kolhan jungles, as many as six security personnel have lost their lives, while 20 others were critically injured, besides claiming the lives of nearly 22 civilians, leaving a dozen others critically injured, in IED blasts triggered by Maoists in the jungles of Chaibasa. Some of the senior Maoist leaders, including Misir Besra and Patiram Majhi alias Anal Da, are said to be hiding in that forest stretch, which is said to be strategically important.

Mahagathbandhan seat-sharing talks stall as Lalu, Tejashwi head to Delhi; Congress says no hitch

Seat-sharing woes may continue to plague the INDIA bloc in Bihar for some time, with RJD president Lalu Prasad, along with son and heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav, leaving for Delhi on Sunday. The party, which recently authorised Prasad to take a call on seat distribution and candidate selection, enjoys an overbearing presence in the Mahagathbandhan, the name by which the RJD, Congress and Left combine was known in Bihar until a nationwide alliance was formed with the catchy acronym. When the father-son duo, accompanied by Prasad's wife Rabri Devi, a former chief minister, left their residence, cries of despair emanated from aspirants who were hopeful of an audience with their benefactors. Security personnel had a tough time chasing them away from 10, Circular Road, the bungalow allotted to Rabri Devi, right across the street from the chief minister's residence. At the airport, the elderly couple chose to take no questions from journalists, but Tejashwi Yadav, who is now eyeing the seat of power held by his parents long back, asserted all is well. Speculations were rife that the RJD's proverbial first family made a dash to the national capital to seek the intervention of Rahul Gandhi, the de facto leader of the Congress, which is said to have annoyed the bigger state ally with its aggression. Reports in a section of the media suggest that the grand old party believes that after the success of 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', it has ceased to be a spent force in the state, and wants to contest almost as many seats as it did five years ago, when it fielded 70 candidates of whom only 19 could win. Bihar polls: Congress, RJD agree to disagree on 5 seats A close aide of the RJD chief, who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, said Lalu ji and Tejashwi ji have left for Delhi because tomorrow is the date of hearing in the land for jobs scam. Of course, while in the national capital, meetings with senior leaders cannot be ruled out. The scam pertains to alleged irregularities that took place while Prasad was the Railway minister in the Congress-led UPA government. The source also claimed, our mind is made up. We will keep for ourselves not less than half of the 243 seats. Compared with 2020, when we contested more than 140 seats, that is still somewhat of a sacrifice to accommodate new allies. It is not just for the Congress, but for all smaller parties to realise that there is a need to keep vaulting ambitions in check. Only then can a credible challenge be posed to the ruling NDA, he added. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday said there is no hitch in seat sharing in Bihar and Mahagathbandhan partners would fight the assembly elections together. He said every party has the right to express its views. His statement came a day after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) asked the INDIA bloc to decide on seat sharing for the Bihar polls by October 14 or else the party would take its own decision. In Bihar, there is no hitch in seat sharing in the Mahagathbandhan, as hoped by the BJP. Every party has the right to express its views. We will fight the election together, Khera, the Congress' Media and Publicity Department head, told reporters at Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport. JMM central general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya on Saturday said the party would take its own decision on the upcoming Bihar assembly elections if a espectful number of seats were not allocated to the party by INDIA bloc by October 14. Filing of nomination papers will be over on October 17 for the first phase, in which 121 seats will go to polls on November 6. SC grants bail to former Ranchi DC Chhavi Ranjan in money laundering case

RANCHI: The Supreme Court on Friday granted conditional bail to former Ranchi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Chhavi Ranjan in a money laundering case linked to a land scam. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 4, 2023, and has been in judicial custody since then. Chhavi Ranjan, a 2011 batch IAS officer, has served as the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi and was posted at the Department of Social Welfare when he was arrested by the ED. The bail plea was heard in the Supreme Court by the Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi. Accused of fraudulent sale-purchase of land in Ranchi, Ranjan had approached the Supreme Court after the Jharkhand High Court rejected his bail plea on August 6 this year. Earlier, the Ranchi PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court had also refused to grant bail to Chhavi Ranjan, prompting him to move the High Court seeking relief. The case involves the fraudulent purchase and sale of land located in Bariatu under the Bargai circle in Ranchi, which was under the possession of the Army. Ranjan was Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi from July 15, 2020, to July 11, 2022. Notably, the Enforcement Directorate had conducted raids on April 13 on 21 locations linked to Chhavi Ranjan spread across Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal and had unearthed a huge land scam by a gang of scamsters having expertise in preparing fake documents, falsifying and forging original documents in Ranchi. Ranjan was the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi when a stone mining lease was granted to Chief Minister Hemant Soren for stone mining at Angara in the outskirts of Ranchi. Apart from former Deputy Commissioner and IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, the ED has also named prominent businessman Vishnu Agrawal, revenue sub-inspector of Bargai circle Bhanu Pratap Prasad, Pradeep Bagchi, land dealers Afsar Ali, Imtiaz Khan, Talha Khan, Faiyaz Khan, Mohammad Saddam, Amit Agrawal, and Dilip Ghosh as accused in the case.

Jharkhand HC quashes court order on 2018 defamation case over Rahul Gandhi's remarks against Amit Shah

RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday, quashed a local court order linked to alleged derogatory remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi against the then BJP President Amit Shah. A single-judge bench of Justice Anil Kumar Choudhary also sent the matter back to the lower court for fresh consideration. While passing the order, the court observed that the Chief Judicial Magistrate appeared to have been influenced by the directions of the Sessions Court while taking cognizance in the case. The High Court stated that the order was passed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, influenced by the order passed by the Sessions Court. Notably, the case stemmed from a criminal complaint filed against Gandhi, which was initially dismissed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Chaibasa. The complainant then moved the Sessions Court by filing a criminal revision petition challenging that dismissal. The Sessions Court subsequently allowed the revision petition, directing the lower court to hear the petitioner and pass afresh order in accordance with the law. Then, the Chief Judicial Magistrate again took cognisance of the case and even issued a summons to Gandhi. The High Court, however, found this entire process legally flawed, observing that the Chief Judicial Magistrates decision of taking cognizance into the matter was influenced by the Sessions Court. It, therefore, quashed the cognizance order and directed the lower court to reconsider the matter afresh in accordance with the law. Advocate Dipankar Rai, appearing on behalf of Rahul Gandhi, argued that the cognisance proceedings were illegal and procedurally defective. The High Court agreed with his submissions, providing much-needed relief to the Congress leader amid a series of legal battles across the country. Earlier on March 18, 2018 in the AICC Plenary Sessions in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi reportedly had said that that, The people of this country will never accept a lying Bhartiya Janata Party leadership drunk with power because they know that, what the Bhartiya Janata Party is designed for. Further, he went on saying, They will accept a man accused of murder as the President of the Bhartiya Janata Party, but the people will never accept the same in the Congress Party. Hurt by the statement made by Rahul Gandhi, a BJP worker Pratap Kumar filed a complaint at the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Chaibasa on July 9, 2018. The court took cognizance in the matter in February 2022 and then issued summon against Rahul Gandhi, which was received by his office.

Candidates left in lurch as JSSC postpones examination last minute

RANCHI: The Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) cancelled the Jharkhand Technical/Special Qualification Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination (JT/SQGLCCE), at the last moment without any prior notice to the students. According to the notice issued by JSSC, the examination was postponed due to some unavoidable circumstances. The examination was scheduled to be conducted on October 9 and the candidates reached their respective examination centers from different states. They only got to know about the postponement of the examination through the notice posted on the wall of the examination center. One of the candidates, who had come from Patna, said that if JSSC had informed them a day before, they could have cancelled their tickets and saved their money. This is an unprofessional attitude by JSSC. They should compensate for the time, energy, and money wasted in the entire exercise. They should have informed us at least 24 hours ahead of the examination date, said a candidate. Meanwhile, making a scathing attack on the state government, former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi posted on X, Hemant Soren has once again done to the youth what he has always been doing -- betrayal! Today, the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) was scheduled to conduct the Jharkhand Technical/Special Qualification Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination, but, citing technical glitches, they suddenly announced the cancellation of the exam, said Marandi. Was the technical setup not properly executed because Hemant was in Delhi, or did a real problem arise?, he added. Whatever the reason, the youth who appeared for the examination had to bear the financial and mental loss. The youth have been trapped in the vicious circle of conspiracies of the Hemant government for the last 6 years. The careers of the youth are being ruined by leaking the papers, and then they are being branded as accused and asked for proof of their innocence, he added. , - ! #JSSC / , Babulal Marandi (@yourBabulal) October 9, 2025 Marandi appealed to Hemant Soren, Please immediately address the glitches and ensure the examination is conducted transparently as soon as possible. The government should also bear the travel expenses of all candidates to the examination center. Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das also came forward and posted on his social media platform X, saying that the youth of Jharkhand will teach this incompetent government a lesson. Shame on the Jharkhand government! Hemant government has once again defrauded students by surreptitiously postponing the Jharkhand Technical/Special Qualification Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) in the dark of night, posted Raghubar Das on X. HC seeks report from Jharkhand govt after tribal man who didn't get ambulance carried wife on shoulders

RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday took suo-moto cognizance of the incident in the state last week when a tribal man set off for home carrying his ailing wife after not getting an ambulance. This comes after the incident was reported in newspapers including The New Indian Express , with the court asking the state government to file an affidavit in this regard. Advocate Piyush Chitresh, appearing on behalf of the state government, said that the matter will be heard next on October 13. The incident took place at the Dhalbhumgarh Community Health Center (CHC). Shukulmani Sabar had gone for treatment to CHC Dhalbhumgarh on Friday, but was referred to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur for better treatment by doctors on Saturday. However, neither a 108 ambulance was available on time, nor any alternative arrangements were made. Consequently, the man left for home carrying his wife on his shoulders. After the incident was brought to the notice of health officials, an ambulance was dispatched from CHC Dhalbhumgarh, and the couple was brought back to the hospital from Dhalbhugarh Chowk. But, according to officials, they refused to go to MGM, Jamshedpur and were sent to home by an ambulance. According to eyewitnesses, when Shukulmani could not walk to a distance from the hospital, her husband, Gura Sabar, carried her on his shoulders. Holding her with one hand and her bag with the other, he kept on walking on the road heading towards their village Mudathakura in Gudabandha. On the way, a mobile shop owner who saw their plight arranged an auto to take the couple to Dhalbhumgarh Chowk. When Shukulmani was admitted to the Community Health Center on Friday, her hemoglobin was reportedly 7.5 g/dL and she complained of blood in her sputum. Gura Sabar said that his wife had been suffering from fever and diarrhea for two to three weeks. Unable to find a vehicle and unable to find a place at the hospital, they left on foot without informing anyone. Medical officials, however, said that after being referred to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur, the couple did not wait for the ambulance to come or even an auto and left for home on foot as they did not want to go to any other place.

RANCHI: The Jharkhand Police have heightened security measures across the state, deploying armed forces at sensitive locations and along key transport corridors, following the proscribed CPI (Maoist)s announcement of a Resistance Week from Wednesday and a bandh on 15 October, a senior officer said. NDA, Oppn bloc intensify talks for seats deals amid push from allies

PATNA/NEW DELHI: The Bihar Assembly elections are heating up, with both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan holding separate talks to finalise seat-sharing arrangements. While the BJP is busy negotiating with its smaller allies, the opposition is optimistic about announcing its deal in a day or two. The Congress partys Central Election Committee (CEC) will meet on Wednesday to clear the first list of candidates without delay. Rahul Gandhi, who is currently touring South America, will join the meeting virtually. Sources indicate that Congress plans to contest around 6063 seats in the 243-member assembly under the India blocs seat-sharing formula. The focus is on winnable seats. The meeting will also review the campaign strategy, readiness in key regions, and coordination with alliance partners, including the RJD and the Left parties. Although there are some challenges over seats in north Bihar and the Seemanchal region, the parties aim to reach a consensus soon. The NDA is also close to finalising its arrangement. BJP and JD(U) are likely to contest from the biggest chunk of seats, sharing 205 seats between them. The remaining seats may be allocated to smaller allies: 25 to Chirag Paswans LJP (RV), seven to HAM, and six to RLM. Talks with LJP(RV) are ongoing, and if its share increases, it may reduce the number of seats for RLM. Smaller allies may also be compensated with seats in the Rajya Sabha or Legislative Council. All top NDA leaders from Bihar are in New Delhi to finalise the seat allocation. In Patna, VIP chief Mukesh Sahani said that the Mahagathbandhan, part of the INDIA bloc, has finalised its seat-sharing formula. Along with the number of seats, the bloc will also announce its chief ministerial and deputy chief ministerial faces. The RJD is expected to play the role of the senior partner, while Congress will contest 5557 seats and relinquish all seats in the Patna district. The formula was finalised after RJD chief Lalu Prasad intervened when VIP demanded the deputy CM post. D. Raja, the general secretary of the CPI, who has arrived in Patna, was confident that the process would be smooth. The JMM is also expected to enter political fray in Bihar. It is eyeing seats along Bihars border with Jharkhand. Sources said that the party may be given two seats in the seat-sharing deal, although its demand is reportedly higher. The proposed seat-sharing for the INDIA bloc is as follows: 125 seats to RJD, 5557 to Congress, 35 to three Left parties, 20 to VIP, three to Pashupati Kumar Paras RLJP, and two to JMM. Some Left parties, such as the CPI-ML, are not fully satisfied with their allocation. Congress has agreed to relinquish some traditional seats, including those in Patna district, and others, such as Sursand, Jale, and Raja Pakar, may be allocated to the RJD. Prashant Kishor included in JSPs 1st list of candidates Amid a buzz over union minister Chirag Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) forging an alliance with political strategist-turned activist Prashant Kishors Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) ahead of state assembly elections, JSP is all set to release its first list of 100 candidates on October 9. The list will contain the name of Prashant Kishor as he may contest election from any assembly constituency in Shahabad region comprising Rohtas, Kaimur, Bhojpur and Buxar districts. Sources hinted at Kishor being fielded from Kargahar seat in Rohtas district. The seat is currently held by Congress MLA Santosh Kumar Mishra.

Bihar polls: Political parties inch closer to sealing seat-sharing deal

PATNA: With the announcement of poll schedule for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, hectic parleys among the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition bloc are underway. The Opposition bloc comprising RJD, Congress, VIP, and Left parties, however, claimed on Tuesday that a seat-sharing deal has been finalised and the same would be announced in a day or two. Former minister and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani claimed that the seat-sharing formula among the allies of Mahagathbandhan, a part of the INDIA bloc, has been finalised. The number of seats to be allotted to each partner and names of blocs chief ministerial face as well as deputy chief minister would also be announced, he told this reporter. According to insiders, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is expected to play the role of senior partner in the alliance while Congress is appearing to compromise with just 55-57 seats and giving up all the seats in Patna district. The seat-sharing formula was finalised after the intervention of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, as VIP was adamant on its demand for the deputy chief ministers post. The proposed seat-sharing arrangement allocates 125 seats to RJD, 55 to 57 seats to Congress, 35 seats to three Left parties, 20 seats to VIP, three seats to Pashupati Kumar Paras Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) and two seats to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Sources, however, claimed that CPI-ML was not satisfied with number of seats allotted to it. D. Raja, general secretary of CPI, who reached here to attend a meeting of Opposition bloc on seat-sharing, told the media that everything within the Opposition bloc would be finalised smoothly. Congress has agreed to forgo some of its traditional seats in this election. For instance, the party has agreed to give up all the seats in Patna district. In the 2020 assembly election, Congress contested four seats in Patna district. These seats may go into RJDs kitty. High-stakes battle in Bihar: Two-phase polls to test opposition unity and NDAs hold on power In addition, several seats which were earlier held by Congress, including Sursand (Sitamarhi), Jale (Darbhanga), and Raja Pakar (Vaishali) may go to RJD. The sitting MLA from Raja Pakar is Pratima Singh. But RJD wants to field Shivchandra Ram from this seat. JMM is also expected to enter the political fray in Bihar. It is eyeing seats along with the Jharkhand border. Sources said that the party may be given two seats in the seat-sharing deal, although its demand is reportedly higher. Similarly, RLJP is to get three seats, the list of which has already been submitted to Tejashwi Yadav, who is the chairman of the coordination committee of the INDIA bloc. In NDA, BJP and JD(U) are likely to contest almost equal number of seats, with a total of 205 seats being divided between the two major allies. The remaining seats are to be distributed among smaller NDA alliesLok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM). Sources said that the BJP has offered 25 seats to Chirag Paswans LJP(RV), seven seats to HAM led by Jitan Ram Manjhi and six seats to Upendra Kushwahas RLM. However, negotiations with Chirag Paswan are going on and may reach a consensus by Tuesday evening. A source said that if Paswans share of seats increases, it may result in a reduction of seats to Kushwahas RLM. In the case that the smaller allies' seat share is reduced, the BJP may compensate them with offers of Rajya Sabha or Legislative Council seats. All top leaders of NDA from Bihar are camping in New Delhi to give final touch to seat allocation. Bihar assembly elections are to be held in two phasesfirst on November 6 and second on November 11. The counting of votes will take place on November 14. The election process will be concluded by November 16. The term of the present state assembly expires on November 22.

Elephant injured in IED blast in Jharkhand's Saranda forests

RANCHI: A wild elephant was injured in an IED blast allegedly planted by Maoists in Saranda jungles of Chaibasa. According to forest officials, the explosion was so powerful that the elephant's right front toes were blown off, leaving pieces of flesh hanging from the wound. Following the incident, both the forest department and police have been alerted in the area. The wound on its front right limb appears to be fresh as it was found in the other three elephants which earlier succumbed to their injuries following IED blasts. We received information at the midnight about it, which is currently under treatment, said Saranda Divisional Forest Officer Aviroop Sinha. The elephant was first spotted in the Ankua jungles in Saranda forests, he added. The DFO informed that it is yet to be confirmed whether the elephant got injured by an IED blast or not, but prima facie it appears that the injured has been caused by the IED blast looking at the pattern of the wounds. The blood loss, however, is less that the other three elephants which got injured in the IED blasts earlier, he said. Meanwhile, mobile veterinary unit has been roped in for the treatment and support from trained veterinary officers. Three additional teams of veterinary officers from the adjoining blocks have also been called in, said the DFO. A team from Vantara is also coming to treat the elephant, he said. According to the DFO, since there is no movement of Maoists in Ankua jungles of Saranda, it is a matter of concern that how did this elephant was hit by an IED. There is also a possibility that it was hit by an IED somewhere else and reached in these jungles wandering in pain, he said. The veterinarian attending to the elephant, Dr Sanjay Kumar, stated that the elephant has been given antibiotics, painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication. The injury is deep and appears to be the result of a massive explosion, he said. Dr Kumar informed that the team is attempting to move the elephant to a safe location where it can receive better and continuous treatment. The injured elephant is a female approximately 10 to 12 years old. Due to the severe injury, she is unable to walk. Forest department personnel are constantly monitoring her and making every effort to ensure her speedy recovery, said Dr Kumar. This incident has raised deep concern among forest officials, as the area is already dangerous for elephants due to Maoist activities and IED explosions. This is fourth such elephant which has been hit by an IED blast in Saranda, as the three others which got injured succumbed to their injuries. Two of them died during treatment while another one found died in the jungles.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday announced the date for the Ghatshila Assembly by-election during a press conference at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The counting of votes will take place on November 14. The by-election notification will be issued on October 13. The deadline for candidate nominations is October 21. Nominations can be withdrawn until October 24. With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in the Ghatshila Assembly constituency. Initially, there was some confusion whether the code would apply to the entire district or just the constituency, but the Election Commission has clarified that it will be enforced only within the concerned Assembly segment. The Election Commission has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure that the polling process is conducted in a fair and transparent manner. Notably, the Ghatshila constituency had fallen vacant this year after the death of State Education Minister Ramdas Soren in Delhi following a prolonged illness. The constituency, which has remained a traditional fortress of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, was won only once by the BJP in 2014. No party has yet announced their candidates. However, Somesh Soren, son of the former Education Minister Ramdas Soren, is likely to be fielded by JMM. On the other hand, the BJP is again going to keep its hopes alive by giving a ticket to former Chief Minister Champai Sorens son Babulal Soren, who was defeated by Ramdas Soren in the 2024 Assembly polls.

Unable to find an ambulance, tribal man in Jharkhand sets off for home carrying his ailing wife

JHARKHAND: A tribal man at the Dhalbhumgarh Community Health Centre (CHC) in Jamshedpur, set off for home carrying his wife on his shoulders after he was not provided an ambulance or any other alternate arrangements. The incident highlights the struggles faced by people in rural areas, particularly in tribal communities, in accessing medical care and emergency services. Notably, Shukulmani Sabar had gone for treatment to CHC Dhalbhumgarh on Friday, but was referred to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur for better treatment by doctors on Saturday. Neither an 108 ambulance was available on time, nor provided with any alternative arrangements. Consequently, the man left for home carrying his wife on his shoulder. However, after the incident was brought to the notice of health officials, an ambulance was dispatched from CHC Dhalbhumgarh, and the couple was brought back to the hospital. According to eyewitnesses, when Shukulmani could not walk a distance from the hospital, her husband, Gura Sabar, carried her on his shoulders. Holding her with one hand and her bag with the other, he kept on walking on the road heading towards their village, Mudathakura in Gudabandha. On the way, Pavitra Manna, a mobile shop owner, took a sensitive initiative and arranged an auto through his friend Gulshan to take the couple to Dhalbhumgarh Chowk. Reportedly, Shukulmani Sabar was admitted to the Community Health Centre on Friday. Her haemoglobin was 7.5 g/dL, and she complained of blood in her sputum. Her husband, Gura Sabar, said that his wife had been suffering from fever and diarrhoea for two to three weeks. Unable to find a vehicle and a place at the hospital, they left on foot without informing anyone. Medical officer, Dr Gopinath Mahali, said that after being referred to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur, the couple did not wait for the ambulance to come or even an auto and left for home on foot. When it was put in our notice, we sent an ambulance for them, but they refused to go to MGM Hospital for unknown reasons and were taken to CHC Gudabandha once again. But they insisted on going back to their village and were dropped off at their home by an ambulance, said the Medical Officer. They said that they had some work at home and hence would go to MGM Hospital on Sunday, he added. According to the Medical Officer, when the ambulance was sent to his home on Sunday, the couple refused to go to Jamshedpur for treatment. We are trying our best so that we can provide the woman, who is a Tuberculosis patient, the best possible treatment, but we are not getting proper cooperation from the other side, said the Medical Officer. Meanwhile, an explanation has been sought from the on-duty CHC staff who were present at the time of the incident, he added. The Civil Surgeon has also sought an explanation from the Medical Officer on the entire incident.

Jharkhand to host first-ever Run for Gajraj marathon to raise promote elephant conservation

RANCHI: Aimed at creating awareness for the conservation of wild animals, especially elephants, the Jharkhand forest department for the first time, is set to organise a marathon Run for Gajraj in the foothills of Dalma in Jamshedpur on October 5. According to officials, though the marathon is meant to create awareness for the protection and conservation of wild animals, the focus will be on the elephants. Both male and female elephants will participate in the event with separate prize money for each group, ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 31,000 across five categories. According to Jamshedpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Saba Alam, An elephant marathon is being conducted as part of the Wildlife Week 2025 in Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. This event is aimed at promoting eco-tourism, local tourism, and encouraging fitness and healthy living among citizens. Probably, this is the first time such an event, focused especially at the wild elephants, is being organised in Jharkhand. Earlier, a walkathon, Walk for Gajraj was also organised at Van Bhawan in Jamshedpur on Friday, he added. The DFO informed that more than 2500 participants have already registered to take part in the event, while the figure is likely to cross 3000 by the time it closes on Saturday. The marathon will be for 16 km and will be flagged off at Saharbeda Football Ground in the foothills of Dalma at 7.00 am on Sunday. It will pass through four villages to end at Saharbeda itself. Alam said that after a long gap, five elephants returned to Dalma a few days ago, a region that had otherwise been devoid of wild elephants. Forest department sources, however, noted that while only a few elephants remain at Dalma, a sizeable number are currently stationed at Chakulia in Ghatsila subdivision and at Chandil in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district. They attributed the exodus of elephants from Dalma to a 16-km-long trench dug by the West Bengal Forest Department five years ago, which disrupted the tuskers movement along the elephant corridor connecting the two states.

Jharkhand women use state grant to build road, solve longstanding village crisis

RANCHI: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Jharkhand, a group of women from Pichulia Tola in Langritanr, under Kanchanpur Block in Palamu district, used part of the financial support provided by the state government under the Maiyan Samman Yojana to construct a 1.5 km approach road to their village. The women explained they had long struggled due to the lack of proper road access. Vehicles refused to enter the village, forcing residents to walk the entire 1.5 km stretch from the main road. Even bikes found it difficult to traverse the path, and in emergencies, patients, including women in labour, had to be carried on cots suspended from bamboo poles to reach the main road, as ambulances could not access the village. Using Rs 2,000 each from the Rs 5,000 monthly financial assistance provided under the Maiyan Samman Yojana , the 25 women of the tola (hamlet) pooled together Rs 50,000 to fund the construction. Basanti Kumari, 50, who played a pivotal role in the effort, recalled, While discussing the ongoing difficulties due to the lack of a road, one of the women mentioned she had received Rs 5,000 in her bank account under the Maiyan Samman Yojana . Jokingly, someone said we should just build the road ourselves. To our surprise, everyone agreed. A meeting was called, and we decided to contribute Rs 2,000 each. This spontaneous decision came after an earlier attempt by villagers to raise funds on Friday, which had only brought in Rs 12,000, enough to begin work, but insufficient to make significant progress. When the initial funds were exhausted, the women's contribution proved vital. They also volunteered their labour, and the road was completed by Monday evening. Geeta Devi, another resident, shared that even guests refused to marry into the village due to its inaccessibility. No wedding processions for our daughters or sisters could reach here because there was no road, she said. Premshila Devi added that children faced daily challenges attending school, having to walk over 1.5 km to reach transport. Villagers claimed they had repeatedly approached their local Mukhiya (village head), MLA, and MP, but their pleas were ignored, prompting them to take matters into their own hands. Thanks to the women, we were able to complete the road. Without their support, it wouldnt have been possible, said local resident Deepak Kumar. Mukhiya Saraswati Devi responded by stating that government funds for road construction had already been allocated, but the work was delayed. Construction was scheduled to begin after the monsoon, she said, while also praising the women's initiative and determination.

Maoists call October 15 bandh in five states over police suppression

RANCHI: The CPI (Maoist) has announced a bandh on 15 October against alleged suppression by security forces in five states, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Chhattisgarh. In a press release issued by the Eastern Regional Bureau of CPI (Maoist), signed by Sanket, the group also declared the observance of a Resistance Week from 8 to 14 October to mobilise support and register opposition to the ongoing campaign by security forces in these states. According to the statement, the bandh was necessitated by the Union governments refusal to engage in dialogue with them. The release specifically accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of turning down talks, while security agencies intensified combing operations under Operation Kagar in Maoist-affected states. Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday rejected the ceasefire offer made by the Maoists, reiterating the governments commitment to eliminate violent Naxalites by the end of March next year. He said extremists were welcome to surrender and assured that security forces would not fire a single bullet at those who lay down arms. The Maoist statement further that on 15 September 2025, three senior leaders of the party were killed in what it described as a staged encounter. Those named include Central Committee member Sahdev Soren, Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee member Raghunath Hembram, and Zonal Committee member Ram Khelawan Ganjhu. Several other cadres have also been targeted in similar incidents, accusing security forces of adopting unlawful methods to weaken the movement, it said. Top Maoist leaders remain prime targets for forces in Chhattisgarh; nine leaders eliminated in 2025 In the name of eliminating Maoists in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, not only individuals are being killed in fake encounters, but mass massacres are being carried out against innocent tribals and indigenous people. And our Home Minister is patting the backs of the police personnel, who murder tribal and indigenous people, stated the press release issued by the CPI (Maoist). The Maoists demanded that all arrested members be produced before the judiciary without delay and urged authorities to desist from conducting fake encounters. Warning of serious consequences if their demands are ignored, the statement clarified that essential services such as milk supply, press vehicles and ambulances carrying patients would be exempted from the 15 October bandh. In the wake of the alleged call of bandh by the Maoists, intelligence agencies have sounded high alerts in Jharkhand. Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta, however, termed the bandh call as merely an attempt to create panic. Naxalites are trying to spread fear through such statements. Wherever they emerge, strong action will be taken. The state police are fully prepared to face any challenge, said the DGP. Interestingly, a day after Amit Shah rejected the Naxalites ceasefire offer, a dossier prepared by the security and intelligence agencies revealed that after a series of arrests, surrenders and encounters, the top leadership of the Left-Wing Extremists has now been dwindling, with only 13 figures in its apex body, four members of the Politburo and nine members of the Central Committee. According to officials, the goal of eliminating armed Naxals by 31 March 2026 could be met much earlier, possibly by the end of this year.
