Villager locks tiger inside his house, rescued by authorities in Jharkhand
RANCHI: In an unusual incident, a Royal Bengal Tiger, which entered a house at a village near state capita Ranchi on Wednesday morning, was locked inside it by the owner which was later rescued by the forest officials in the evening after more than 12 hours. According to the house owner Purandar Mahto, the big cat entered his house early in the morning at 4:30 am just after he got up to take his goats out of his house. As he stepped out of his house to tie his goats, he came face-to-face with the tiger. As soon as I got up to take the goats out of the house, a full-grown tiger jumped into my house. Out of fear, I also got inside the house and locked from inside. My children started shouting out of fear. Then I realized that we were in danger as both the tiger and my family was inside the house. Therefore, I gathered some courage and ushered my two daughters out of the house and locked the iron door behind us, trapping the predator inside, said Purandar Mahto. Then he started calling his people in the village and the forest officials following which people started gathering near his house to get a glimpse of the tiger trapped inside, he added. Forest officials rushed to rescue the tiger, but due to a large gathering it became difficult for them to execute the operation. Meanwhile, looking at the threat to the life and property of the people living in the region, the district administration issued prohibitory orders within the radius of 200 meters of the house where the tiger had been locked by the house owner, Purandar Mahto. A team from Betla National Park was roped in to rescue the tiger with the help of the personnel of Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi. According to forest officials, the area, located near the West Bengal border, occasionally sees movement of wildlife, but such an incident of locking a full-grown tiger inside the house by someone is rare. Ranchi DFO Shrikant informed that the tiger is completely safe. The best part of the rescue operation was that there was no need to tranquillize the tiger, he said. Due to heavy crowd, the cage in which the tiger had been kept, was completely covered with plastic. During shifting, it was given a mild dose of anesthesia so that he does not feel nervous, said the DFO. Wild life experts informed that when a tiger is 14 to 18 months of age, hormonal changes start taking place in its body. In that situation, the tiger gets out of its habitat to establish its own territory. Many times, wandering tigers enter human habitats, said a veterinarian Dr Ajay. The reason how and why this tiger entered the residential area will be known only after assessing its age, he added. According to officials, the rescued tiger will be kept in Birsa Biological Park. It will undergo health checkup to see whether it is injured or not. If the health report comes out to be fine, it will be decided to which forest area it should be shifted to after talking to the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

Mamata Banerjee blames centre and DVC for 'man-made' floods in West Bengal
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again held the Central Government and the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) responsible for the ongoing flood situation in the state, describing it as largely man-made. Incessant rainfall over the past few days has led to severe flooding across several districts, with rivers such as the Dwarkeswar, Gandheswari, Shilabati, and Kangsabati overflowing. The districts of Bankura, West Midnapore, and Jhargram have been worst affected, with the situation in Ghatal and Garhbeta becoming increasingly critical. The Chief Minister alleged that the DVC released water from its dams without prior intimation to the state. The DVC releases water without informing us. That is why there are floods. Bihar and Jharkhand also release water without notice, and Bengal bears the brunt, she stated. She attributed the current crisis to the release of excess water from the Maithon and Panchet dams operated by the DVC. According to Banerjee, if the dams had been properly dredged, they could have held an additional 4 lakh cusecs of water, potentially preventing the flood. Banerjee also pointed to issues in North Bengal, blaming water released from rivers in Bhutan for causing flooding there. There is no representative from West Bengal on the Indo-Bhutan River Committee. That is why Bengal is suffering. There should be representation from the state in that committee, she said. Ghatal in West Midnapore is reported to be in the most critical condition due to continued rainfall. The situation has also cast doubt on the future of the long-delayed Ghatal Master Plan. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Banerjee had pledged that the state government would independently implement the project. Rs 500 crore was allocated for it in this years state budget. However, flood conditions have brought the project to a halt. Criticising the Centre again on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said, The Centre has done nothing to control floods in Ghatal. She reiterated that the Ghatal Master Plan would be completed within the next three years, with a total state investment of Rs 1,500 crore.

RJD leader quizzed over hawala link in failed bid to topple NDA government in Bihar
PATNA: The Economic Offences Unit (EOU), an anti-corruption wing of the Bihar Police, has tightened its noose around RJD leader Engineer Sunil alias Sunil Singh for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to topple the NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during the floor test on 12 February last year. The EOU on Tuesday summoned Engineer Sunil to its office in the state capital and questioned him for more than three hours. A questionnaire was prepared for his formal questioning. On Saturday, an EOU team pasted notices at Engineer Sunils residences in Kidwaipuri, Patna, and Saidullahpur in Vaishali district, directing him to appear before the probe agency. Engineer Sunil is known to be closely associated with RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. He has been accused of making an abortive attempt to topple the NDA government by gaining the confidence of some JD(U) MLAs to vote against the ruling coalition during the floor test in the state assembly. The EOUs action against Engineer Sunil is seen as an attempt by the ruling dispensation to exert pressure on the Opposition ahead of the assembly elections due in October-November this year. Sources said the EOU is likely to summon several other leaders based on the information obtained from Engineer Sunil. The alleged horse-trading attempt came to light after Sudhanshu Shekhar, JD(U) MLA from Harlakhi in Madhubani district, lodged an FIR against a party colleague at Kotwali police station in the state capital on 11 February 2024. He alleged that he was offered a bribe of Rs 10 crore and a ministerial berth for switching over to the RJD-led Grand Alliance ahead of the trust vote. Shekhar named his party colleague and MLA Sanjeev Kumar in the FIR as an accused. In the complaint, the JD(U) MLA also alleged that two fellow MLAs were kidnapped and that an inducement of 10 crore was offered as part of a plot to buy votes. Shekhar specifically accused MLAs Bima Bharti and Dilip Rai of being kidnapped for this purpose. On the day of the floor test, three JD(U) MLAs, including Bima Bharti, arrived late at the assembly and were unable to participate in the Speaker's election, prompting the NDA government to initiate a thorough investigation. The case was subsequently handed over to the EOU. On 28 January 2024, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar dumped the RJD-led Grand Alliance and re-joined hands with the BJP to form the NDA government in Bihar. During preliminary investigation, allegations of making payments to some MLAs through hawala transactions were found to be true. Evidence of MLAs receiving payments in advance to vote against the NDA by shifting their loyalty towards the RJD-led alliance was found, an investigating officer said. The conspiracy to topple the government involved individuals from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Nepal. It is alleged that the MLAs would have received the full payment through hawala channels across different states had the government lost the trust vote in the state assembly on 12 February 2024. DIG, EOU, Manavjeet Singh Dhillon earlier said that the police had found evidence of a money trail linked to the alleged horse-trading attempt. The payments were allegedly made to ensure that these MLAs would support the Opposition, Grand Alliance (GA), which could have led to the fall of the NDA government. The investigation is ongoing, and the EOUs revelations highlight a serious attempt to manipulate the political process in Bihar. If the accusations are proven, they could further deepen political tensions in the state, raising questions about the influence of external forces on Bihars governance.

Habib Ansari (52) and his wife Jumera Khatoon (48) died late on Sunday night while they were sleeping in their room. The roof caved in amid continuous downpour, burying them under the debris. Villagers rushed to their aid, pulling them out from the rubble and taking them to the Barhi Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared both of them dead. Barhi Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Johan Tudu said the couple was sleeping in one room at the time of the incident, while other family members who were in separate rooms escaped unhurt. The rescue and relief team reached the spot and cleared the debris to recover the bodies, the SDO said, adding that the victims' family will receive compensation as per government provisions. Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Notably, Jharkhand has been witnessing continuous rainfall for the past week, severely disrupting normal life. The monsoon, which entered Jharkhand on June 17, has since intensified. According to the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is now moving across the state, resulting in widespread heavy rain. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts including Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Khunti, Lohardaga, Gumla, Saraikela-Kharsawan, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Simdega from 24 to June 26. RANCH: Chakradharpur (CKP) Division under South Eastern Railway is all set to install an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EIDS) soon to prevent elephants from being mowed down by the speeding trains in Jharkhand. The Intrusion Detection System, for which a successful trail was completed recently along the Barabamboo-Chakradharpur-Lotapahar section, detects the presence of elephants close to the rail track and informs the loco pilots on time so that they can 'slow down' the speeding train. Two elephants, Jyoti and Sonu, were arranged from Vantara for the testing to assess the impact of EIDS. The system will operate through fibre optics and sensors. This step will prove to be very crucial in the Kolhan region, where a large number of elephants cross railway tracks regularly and many of them are hit by trains and killed. The system has been developed by Indian Railways in association with the Forest Department. The railway officials have identified such spots where elephants move frequently and will install the system at such places. According to Railway officials, the system works within a radius of 30 meters on both sides of the railway track. When a herd of elephants comes within the radius, the system immediately sends an alert to the nearest station master. The station master will inform the train driver through the wireless system, after which the speed of the train is slowed down, said Senior DCM Adiyta Kumar Chaudhary. After the elephants cross the track, the speed of the train is normalised, he added. Notably, a herd of wild elephants roams in nearly 18 districts of Jharkhand, due to which at many occasions they get killed after being hit by trains on railway tracks. According to the data provided by the Forest Department, on average 12 to 20 elephants are killed in train accidents every year in Jharkhand. Most accidents occur in the Chakradharpur Railway Division, while half a dozen elephants have also been killed in the last five years in the Ranchi Railway Division. Many times, a herd of elephants encamp on the railway track, disrupting rail services. Not only elephants, but Railways also suffer losses due to such incidents, as there is always a danger of the train getting derailed. To prevent such incidents and to save elephants from getting hit by the trains, the Railways is preparing this AI-equipped Elephant Intuition Detection System device for Rs 15 crore and is taking the final step towards installing it.
CPI (Maoist) NR bureau terror revival case: NIA nabs one more accused from Delhi
NEW DELHI: The anti-terror federal probe agency NIA has arrested another key accused, identified as Vishal Singh, in connection with its probe into the CPI (Maoist) Northern Region Bureau (NRB) terror revival conspiracy, officials said on Sunday. Following the arrest, the agency conducted a search at his residence in West Delhi and seized devices including hard drives, pen drives, mobile phones, and other incriminating material, they said. Singh, originally from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, has been found to be a member of the CPI (Maoist), the officials said, alleging that he had delivered a drone to leaders of the banned outfit in the Chhakarbanda/Panchrukhiya forest area of Bihar to further its violent anti-national activities. He had imparted technical training to other cadres of the CPI (Maoist) and had also attended meetings with its central committee members in the deep forest areas of Bihar in 2019, a senior NIA official said. In August 2024, the NIA had arrested another accused, Ajay Singhal alias Aman, who was the in-charge of the State Organising Committee (SOC) for Haryana and Punjab of the CPI (Maoist). The case pertains to the banned Naxal outfits conspiracy to re-energise its depleting influence in the Northern Regional Bureau (NRB) area, which comprises Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. The conspiracy involves recruitment of cadres and strengthening of the organisation in the region through underground operatives working in urban areas, along with some Over Ground Workers (OGWs) operating under the guise of activists, the official said. Several front organisations and student wings have allegedly been used to prepare the ground for promoting the conspiracy aimed at waging war against the Government of India, the officials said, claiming that such Naxal operatives were receiving funds from the outfits Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB), particularly from Jharkhand.
Afghan national arrested with forged Indian passport at Bhubaneswar airport
BHUBANESWAR: Amid rising national security concerns over illegal infiltration and potential espionage threats , an Afghan national masquerading as an Indian citizen was arrested at Biju Patnaik International Airport, police sources said on Sunday. The accused, identified as Mohammad Yousaf alias Yaha Khan, was caught red-handed on his arrival from Dubai on an IndiGo flight. He was using a forged Indian passport. The Airport police arrested Yousaf on Saturday on the complaint of DSP (immigration) Samapika Pattnaik whose team during a routine immigration clearance of Flight No. 6E-1488 arriving from Dubai spotted him with the counterfeit Indian passport (No. U1380251) issued in the name of Yaha Khan, purportedly a resident of Cuttack. Acting on suspicion, the immigration team conducted a thorough background check, which revealed a discreet look out circular (LOC) issued from Kolkata airport against the accused. Further system verification confirmed that the person was, in fact, Mohammad Yousaf, a 54-year-old man from Afghanistan, holding a genuine Afghan passport (No. 02457655). Police sources said he had allegedly illegally entered India in 2018, adopting a false Indian identity and securing official documents through forged means. Investigations revealed that Yousaf had fraudulently acquired multiple Indian identity documents, including Aadhaar (No. 2347 1649 4378), PAN (BERPK1646E), Voter ID (YNY1493030) and Driving License (OR0519910002562) apart from the fake Indian passport. He had been residing in Peyton Sahi, Buxi Bazar area of Cuttack and operating as alias Yaha Khan, successfully blending into society while concealing his true identity. He not only lived undetected for years but also misused the forged documents to travel, conduct business, and open bank accounts across states. Officials have expressed concern that such forged identities could be used for espionage, smuggling, or terror-related activities, especially at a time when India is facing heightened intelligence threats. Sources said Yousaf confessed to his real identity during interrogation and admitted to fabricating multiple Indian documents. The investigating team also seized fake identity cards, foreign currencies, Rs 80,000 in cash, a smartphone, two gold earrings, a motorcycle registration certificate and bank documents in the forged name from his possession. The accused has been produced in court and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway to uncover any wider network and potential national security implications. We are now investigating the network that might have aided him in obtaining these documents and whether he was part of a larger sleeper cell or illegal intelligence operation, said an official. According to Tiwari, nine people travelling in a Mahindra Bolero died in a crash at Namshol under the Balrampur police station area of West Bengal, which borders the Chandil subdivision of Jharkhands Seraikela-Kharsawan district. All the deceased were returning from Tilaitan village (Neemdih) after attending a wedding procession. Eyewitnesses said that as soon as the car carrying the wedding guests reached Namshol on the ChandilPurulia National Highway, a speeding trailer coming from the opposite direction rammed into it head-on. The collision was so severe that the car was shattered, killing eight people on the spot. One critically injured person was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to injuries, said an eyewitness on condition of anonymity. Locals stated that the trailer was moving at a very high speed and the driver lost control at a turn. Following the accident, police from Balrampur and Chandil, along with administrative officials, rushed to the spot. The bodies were recovered from the mangled vehicle and sent for post-mortem. Police have seized the trailer, but the driver fled the scene and is currently absconding. A search is on to trace him. The local administration has assured all possible assistance and compensation to the victims' families. The deceased have been identified as car owner Biru Mahato, Banka alias Chandramohan Mahato, Ajay Mahato, Vijay Mahato, Sapan Mahato, Gurupad Mahato, Shashank Mahato, Chittaranjan Mahato, and Munda alias Krishna Mahato. All were residents of Mahato Tola in Tilaitar village under the Neemdih police station area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

Ex-municipality chairman among five held for extortion of money from truckers
JHARSUGUDA: Lakhanpur police on Wednesday night arrested five persons including former chairman of Brajrajnagar municipality Kishor Agarwal for allegedly extorting money from truck drivers loading coal at Lakhanpur opencast mines. Apart from prime accused Agarwal (65) of Lamtibahal, his associates Stifen Paramanik, Amarendar Singh, Sujit Kerketta and Sashi Dhar Chouhan were arrested under sections 296, 308 (6), and 61 (2) of BNS. The arrests were made on basis of a complaint filed by one Sunny Ram (36), a truck driver of Simdega in Jharkhand, alleging coercion and threats by the accused. Ram filed the complaint on June 18 alleging that the accused demanded Rs 145 per truckload to affix a seal on loading slips, essential for issuing challans. The driver claimed he was transporting coal in his truck when Singh and two of his associates approached him and demanded money. When he refused, they reportedly manhandled him and threatened him with dire consequences. The accused also warned that his truck would be blacklisted if he did not pay. Ram further said the three accused claimed to be operating under Agarwals instructions and boasted of high-profile connections. Fearing retribution, the driver paid the amount, and a seal marked LSS was placed on his loading slip. Brajrajnagar SDPO Chintamani Pradhan said basing on the complaint, police registered a case and started investigation. Subsequently, the five accused were arrested and produced in court. Sources said around 400 to 500 trucks, each carrying 17 to 18 tonne of coal, are dispatched daily from Lakhanpur opencast mines to various industries like Vedanta, JSW, BPSL and Hindalco. Agarwal, who owns IB Valley transport, allegedly collected Rs 5 per tonne of coal from transporters. He had secured a tender of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) at 99 per cent discount to load 400500 trucks daily at Lakhanpur mines using his payloaders. The illegal collection of money was going on for years. Contacted, general manager of Lakhanpur Area AK Pandey said they support coal dispatch by rail and oppose transport by trucks. Steps are being taken to stop illegal collection from truck drivers, he added.

Woman among five held for bludgeoning 40-year-old to death in Odisha's Sundargarh district
ROURKELA: Brahmani Tarang police on Thursday arrested five persons including a woman for their alleged involvement in the brutal murder of a 40-year-old man whose injury-ridden body was found at Jiyabahal in Kalunga panchayat three days back. Deputy SP Amarendra Sandha said Phulmani Horo (35), Arbind Surin (42), Mansid Munda (25), Nirmal Topno (19) and Shunila Munda (27) murdered Neil Jojo (40), a resident of Goelkera in adjacent Jharkhand, on June 15. Sandha said Neil reportedly used to physically abuse his wife Turlen. Phulmani, who is also a native of Goelkera, was moved by the suffering of Turlen and had saved her when Neil attacked her with an axe. In 2023, Phulmani also brought Turlen from Golkera and both lived together in a rented house at Jiyabahal. On a few occasions, Neil visited Kalunga and threatened the two women of dire consequences. The police officer said on Saturday evening (June 14), Neil arrived at Jiyabahal again and accosted the two women near Kalunga railway track. However, Phulmani and Turlen ran away in fear. Turlen immediately left for her relatives place at Purunapani, but Neil stayed back at Jiyabahal. On Sunday, the victim arrived at Phulmanis rented house in an inebriated condition and threatened to kill her for helping his wife. The DSP said later in the evening, Phulmani, her uncle Arbind and some neighbours and tried to pacify Neil. However, the victim remained adamant and continued to threaten Phulmani. A heated exchange broke out between Neil and others following which two of Phulmanis associates bludgeoned the victim to death with stones. The accused fled after committing the crime. Neils body with his mutilated face was found near Mahavir new dumping yard on Monday evening. The DSP said the murder mystery was cracked with the help of forensic evidence and phone call records, besides interrogation of the accused. All the accused were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.

Security forces recover 14 IEDs, huge cache of explosives from Jharkhand's Saranda forest
RANCHI: In yet another achievement by the security forces, as many as 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and a huge cache of explosives weighing more than 50 kg were recovered during a search operation in the forests of Chitpil under Toklo Police Station in Chaibasa. The IEDs were destroyed at the spot by the bomb disposal squad due to security reasons. According to police, following a tip-off, a joint operation was launched involving personnel from Jharkhand Police and the CRPFs 60th Battalion. The operation was focused on forested and hilly areas near the ChaibasaSeraikela border, a region known for frequent Maoist activity. During the search operation, the security forces discovered 14 powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted with an intent to ambush patrolling units. Due to security reasons, these IEDs were safely defused by the bomb disposal squad, stated an official communique from Chaibasa Police. In addition to that, an underground Maoist explosive storage site was found, containing 52 polybags filled with nearly 52 kgs of a white powder suspected to be ammonium nitrate commonly used for making bombs by the Maoists, it said. To prevent any potential misuse, the explosives were destroyed on-site, and the storage facility was dismantled. A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Explosive Substances Act, and the CLA Act, stated the official communique. Meanwhile, the security forces continue to monitor the area and are on high alert for any further movement of senior Maoist leaders. Notably, Maoists are now restricted only to the Saranda jungles in Jharkhand as they have been wiped out from other pockets of the state. According to an estimate, around 85 - 90 Maoists are supposed to be hiding in Saranda jungles, where they have planted thousands of IEDs, which have become a challenge for the security forces. The state police have launched a joint operation in Kolhan and Saranda jungles of Chaibasa in November 2022. The joint operation, conducted by personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jharkhand Police, was launched following intelligence inputs about the presence of top Maoist leaders in the region, including Misir Besra, a senior CPI(Maoist) commander with a bounty of Rs one crore on his head.
Anatomy of a crime: Sonam, Muskan and more why are women criminals different?
NEW DELHI: Sonam, Muskan, Shivani, Ravina, Radhika framed in their dual identities as women and alleged 'husband killers' , they have not just grabbed headlines and courted notoriety over the last months but also challenged conventional notions about femininity and crime. The young women from various parts of the country were living their everyday lives, a world away from the national spotlight. Until they were arrested on charges of murdering their husbands. That they were women from small towns who broke out of stereotype in the most brutal way possible led to sensational headlines, frantic curiosity and also gave fodder to a series of misogynistic memes and jokes. The questions abound: Why do women commit crimes? Why are they treated differently than male criminals? Are they demonstrating empowerment or signs that they are, in fact, disempowered? It's a mix of social stigma, rigid gender roles, and unrealistic standards for women, experts said. British criminologist Frances Heidensohn has a term for the strong societal reaction double deviance theory. A woman committing a crime not only violates a legal norm but also a gender norm, explained G S Bajpai, professor of criminology and vice chancellor of the National Law University in Delhi. Women are expected to be caring and compliant. A woman who commits crime is therefore an aberration - abnormal and exceptional. This is not true for men... She is, therefore, as some scholars have described, doubly deviant and hence must be doubly punished'. Thus her gender becomes relevant to society's response to the crime. She is not just a criminal, she is a female criminal, Bajpai told PTI. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported over 4.45 lakh crimes against women in 2022. However, it doesn't maintain a separate category for crimes 'by' women due to their low numbers. Yet serious offences committed by women, however small in number, make an impact all their own. On Tuesday, Sonam Raghuvanshi , a household name today, was taken to Meghalaya to reconstruct the killing of her husband , Raja Raghuvanshi, found hacked to death on a hillside, a critical step in the probe into a case that has the nation agog. The Indore couple was on their honeymoon and the bride allegedly plotted the killing along with her former boyfriend and three hitmen. In March this year, Muskan Rastogi and her lover Sahil Shukla allegedly stabbed her husband Saurabh Rajput to death in Meerut, dismembered his body, and sealed the remains in a drum filled with cement. 36 days of marriage, one deadly meal: Jharkhand bride kills husband in chilling echo of Raja Raghuvanshi case In April, Bijnor's Shivani claimed her husband died of a heart attack. Police later revealed that she had strangled Deepak to death. The same month, in Bhiwani, YouTuber Ravina allegedly killed her husband with the help of a male friend after he objected to their intimacy and her social media activities. Also in June, Sangli woman Radhika allegedly killed her husband, Anil, only 15 days after their marriage. Except for Ravina who is 32, the others are in their 20s. Then there was media executive Indrani Mukerjea , accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012, and Jolly Joseph from Kerala, who allegedly poisoned six family members over 14 years to acquire property. And long before, in 19th-century Kolkata was Troilokya Devi, a courtesan and India's first known female serial killer who lured women -- mainly sex workers - and murdered them to rob them of their jewellery. With an accomplice, she killed at least five women before being apprehended and was executed in 1884. Many of the recent cases - dealing with wives killing their husbands -- triggered a flood of social media outrage and prolonged media coverage that often painted women as inherently malicious and portrayed men as helpless victims of their evil spouses. One instance of the vile and misogynist ride on social media websites was a crude callback to Sonam Bewafa Hai (Sonam is unfaithful) viral meme from some years ago. Public focus is misdirected, said women's rights activist Yogita Bhayana. It reflects our discomfort with women breaking out of the roles assigned to them. Such societal suppression will eventually lead to outbursts. The media is sensationalising it, giving it a Sonam did it' spin, as if she acted alone, which she didn't-there was male involvement too, Bhayana told PTI. Referring to the Sonam Raghuvanshi case, she said it became easier for her to plot a murder than to admit she was in love. That's the kind of psychological conflict women face in our society. Her crime isn't being defended, but we need to examine the root causes -- how deeply our culture conditions women to behave a certain way. Men, Bajpai added, are motivated primarily by power, honour, impulse, and instrumental goals while female crime is often propelled by prior victimisation, manipulation, and emotional stress. A society that views women as caregivers and crucibles of honour is no doubt disturbed when those women engage in criminal activity, Bajpai said. Intimate partner violence is neither new nor uncommon, as global and national trends have indicated that instances of husbands killing their wives far outnumber instances of wives killing their husbands, he argued. In fact, over half of all cases of homicide against women in India are carried out by their current or former partnersThis indicates that the media reporting of cases of women killing their husbands is disproportionate, he noted. According to criminal psychologist Deepti Puranik, there may be a number of reasons behind such an outburst against social ties. Culture and society generally play a lot of roles when it comes to marriages. People are forced to get married against their wishes. Many people are getting married very early and at that age they haven't reached an emotional maturity level to understand the responsibility that comes with a marital relationship, she said. Bhayana echoed Puranik. Women's mental health and internal struggles are ignored, she said. The suppression they face growing up, the communication barriers, and the unrealistic expectations placed on them all builds up. Stories of women criminals have often followed a predictable pattern -- centred on themes like extramarital affairs. This reflects a broader lack of nuance in how such cases are understood, revealing gaps in the way female criminality and its complex motivations are examined. Kulpreet Yadav, co-author of Queens of Crime: True Stories of Women Criminals from India, said law enforcement procedures have never truly adapted to consider women as potential perpetrators because of the scant number of crimes by women. ...the focus has overwhelmingly been on male offenders. Female criminology, by contrast, has received very little attention. As a result, our global understanding of how a woman with criminal intent thinks is quite limited, said the author. Does that mean crime should be treated the same irrespective of the perpetrator's gender? Bajpai advises strongly against it. Such a blanket approach may result in injustice. At times, given the nature and context of the crime, the gender of the perpetrator and the victim become relevant to appropriately understanding the criminal act. Such a comprehensive appreciation of the facts ensures that the response of the state and society is fair and effective, he said.

Mining engineer held from Jharkhand in KYC fraud
NEW DELHI: The police on Wednesday arrested a mining engineer from Jharkhand who allegedly impersonated a bank official and duped people on the pretext of KYC verification after illegally gaining access to the victims mobile devices. They recovered many high-end Apple devices purchased with the cheated amount from the accused. According to the police, a cyber fraud module operated by the accused involved impersonation of bank officials. The fraudsters would contact people under the pretext of KYC verification. In one such incident, a Delhi-based complainant was duped by Ajay Kumar Mandal, who gained access to her mobile device using a remote access application. After obtaining access, the accused transferred Rs 8.10 lakh from the victims account. He purchased seven high-end Apple iPhones and a MacBook online using that money, often by redeeming digital vouchers to evade detection, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said. The fraudsters deployed a network of IP addresses and mobile numbers registered under fake or proxy identities to obscure their digital trail. However, despite multiple layers of digital obfuscation, the police were able to trace IP logs, SIM usage, and IMEI data and identify the accused. Through digital surveillance, two suspicious mobile numbers were detected operating from the same location in Giridih at the same time. Later, the accused, Mandal, was arrested. One iPhone purchased with stolen money was recovered from his possession. Mandal holds a diploma in mining engineering and serves as the primary executor of the cyber fraud module, the DCP added. Month after marriage, wife laces chicken with pesticide, kills man
In Jharkhand's Garhwa district, a 19-year-old woman, Sunita Singh, has been arrested for allegedly poisoning her husband, Budhnath Singh, with pesticide-laced chicken. The incident occurred in Bahokudar village after the couple's recent marriage on May 11.
RANCHI: Days after the sensational Sonam Raghuvanshi case where a woman allegedly murdered her husband during their honeymoon, a similar incident has surfaced in Jharkhands Garhwa district. A 22-year-old woman, Sunita Devi, has been arrested for allegedly poisoning her husband, Budhnath Singh, merely 36 days after their marriage. According to police and family members, Sunita Devi mixed pesticide into a chicken dish she prepared for her husband on June 15. Budhnath began feeling uneasy after the meal and was rushed to the hospital, but died en route. Sunita, who hails from Vishunpur village under Ramchandrapur police station in Chhattisgarh, had married Budhnath, a resident of Bahokundar village under Ranka police station in Garhwa, on May 11. However, tensions were apparent from day one. Budhnaths mother, Rajmati Devi, told police that Sunita returned to her parental home just a day after the wedding, expressing that she disliked her husband and was unwilling to live with him. Families from both sides tried to resolve the matter, and a panchayat was held on June 5 in Vishunpur, following which Sunita returned to her marital home. On June 14, Sunita allegedly convinced Budhnath to buy pesticide from the Ramanujganj market, claiming she needed it for the kitchen garden. A day later, she reportedly laced his chicken meal with the toxic substance. After eating the food, Budhnath complained of severe unease. We tried to take him to the hospital, but he died on the way, said Rajmati Devi. Though the incident occurred on June 15, it came to light on Monday when Rajmati Devi filed a formal complaint, accusing her daughter-in-law of murder. Based on her statement, an FIR was lodged at Ranka police station. Ranka Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rohit Ranjan Singh confirmed the arrest and stated that Sunita initially attempted to mislead the investigation by accusing her mother-in-law. However, during interrogation, she confessed to the crime. She admitted to mixing pesticide into the chicken prepared for her husband, said the SDPO. Police said they are looking into all angles of the case, including possible involvement of others. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the forensic report is received. Investigators also revealed that Sunita had preserved two additional packets of pesticide in her blouse as a backup plan, in case her first attempt failed. After Budhnath was declared dead, she allegedly discarded the remaining packets in nearby bushes. Local residents have added another layer to the investigation, claiming that Sunita had an ongoing affair with a youth from her village. They allege she killed Budhnath to eliminate obstacles and reunite with her boyfriend. The case is under active investigation. If the involvement of others is found, we will take strict action, said SDPO Singh.

Jharkhand HC seeks Centre, state response on DGP Anurag Guptas appointment amid legal challenge
RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court on Monday granted another opportunity to the state government, central government, and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to submit their responses regarding the appointment of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Babulal Marandi, who has challenged Guptas appointment as unconstitutional and in violation of a Supreme Court directive. The next hearing has been scheduled for July 15 after the respondents failed to submit their replies. Advocate Sumit Garodia appeared on behalf of the petitioner. The Advocate General informed the division bench comprising Chief Justice S. Ramchandra Rao and Justice Deepak Roshan that a related case is also pending before the Supreme Court. In his PIL, Marandi alleged that the state government bypassed constitutional norms and misused the police administration for political gain. He pointed out that the Supreme Court had mandated that appointments of DGPs must follow a UPSC-led selection process unless the state enacts a formal law. Instead of legislating, the Jharkhand government framed a rule in 2025 and sought to implement it retrospectively, which Marandi criticised as a deliberate attempt to subvert legal procedures. He further accused the government of rushing Guptas appointment despite his controversial past, including being an accused in an electoral fraud case, facing suspension, and being kept away from election duties by the Election Commission. Marandi claimed the appointment was aimed at extending Guptas tenure, as he was due to retire in April 2025. The opposition leader has also requested that the High Court take suo motu cognisance of the matter and order a CBI investigation. Additionally, he has filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutional validity of the newly framed appointment rules in light of previous apex court judgments. In a related development, sources in the office of the Principal Accountant General (PAG) in Jharkhand revealed that Anurag Guptas salary has been stopped as of April 30, 2025. The PAG office issued a zero-salary slip, stating that no official communication regarding an extension of his service has been received from the state government. The information has been shared with both DGP Gupta and the Project Building Treasury, effectively preventing him from drawing a regular salary beyond April.

Conspirator in loot of explosives by Maoists held in Odisha
ROURKELA: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Rourkela police on Sunday claimed to have made a significant breakthrough in the loot of explosives by Maoists by arresting the main conspirator identified as George Munda alias Kullu (43). Police said Munda of Banko village in K Balang area had set up links with the Maoists for his own personal interest and facilitated the loot of the explosives-laden truck by providing detailed information about the stone quarry near which the crime took place. DIG (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai said during investigation, the SIT questioned several villagers and the name of Munda emerged as the leading conspirator. Munda was grilled and he confessed to the crime. For his own selfish interest, the accused collaborated with the Maoists and assisted in the crime by providing minute details of the status and operational procedures of the Banko stone quarry. Police sources said Munda was staying opposite to the stone quarry at Banko village. He was reportedly extracting stones illegally from the quarry prior to its legal allotment to a leaseholder. Later, he started objecting to the operation of the quarry and through some of his acquaintances in Jharkhand, contacted Maoist leader Anmol Hembram alias Samarjee. In the morning on May 27, the truck carrying around five tonne of blasting explosives was hijacked by 10-15 armed Maoists from near the stone quarry and taken inside Banko forest, just a couple of km from the Saranda forest in adjacent Jharkhand. The Maoists reportedly brought about 30-40 villagers from Jharkhand to carry the explosive packets. The DIG said after the loot of the explosives, police along with the security forces of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand launched a joint search operation in the dense Saranda forest. Subsequently, 3,811.30 kg of the looted explosives dumped in the vicinity of the Odisha-Jharkhand border were recovered. Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said the SIT launched a multi-faceted investigation comprising forensic analysis, telecom data scrutiny and interrogation of multiple stakeholders. The probe established that Munda met with Maoists multiple times and provided vital intelligence to help in the loot of explosives with clinical precision. He said the accused was produced in court under sections 191 (2), 191 (3), 140 (3), 310 (2), 61 (2) and 190 of BNS, sections 10, 13, 16 (B), 18 and 20 of UAP and section 25 of the Arms Act. Incidentally, Jharkhand-based assistant sub-inspector of 134 CRPF Battalion Satyavan Kumar Singh (34) was martyred in an IED explosion during a joint anti-Naxal operation in Silkuta forest near Banko on Saturday morning.
IMD sounds flash flood alert for northeast & south India
NEW DELHI: As the monsoon gained momentum after a two-week lull, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a flash flood alert for northeast and south India. The reactivation of the second phase of the southwest monsoon may bring heavy rainfall to coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe. Additionally, the northeastern states face an increased risk of moderate to severe flash floods. The region is expected to experience heavy rainfall, potentially exceeding 200 mm, the IMD said. Experts warn that the exceptional rainfall may lead to increased surface runoff, soil saturation, and flooding in low-lying areas, which could create conditions conducive to landslides. IMD issued a red alert for Konkan, Goa, Coastal Karnataka, and Kerala, and an orange alert for the northeast. There is a moderate to high risk of flash floods in Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and parts of Assam over the next two days. Orange alert signify the need to be prepared for any eventuality, while Red alert is for the initiation of action taken. This year, the Southwest monsoon reached the Kerala coast eight days before its scheduled date, June 1. It quickly spread over the southern peninsula, a part of central India, and northeast before its time until June 2. Later, the intrusion of warm air from the western side stopped the moisture-laden eastern wind from moving further. This caused a dry spell and heatwave in north India. Multiple systems have formed across the country. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal, south Madhya Maharashtra and its neighbourhood, north Rajasthan, south Himachal Pradesh, and north Uttarakhand. Further, a trough runs from east MP to Bangladesh, and another trough runs from north Rajasthan to west MP. Under the influence of these systems, south, west, central, and northeast India will receive heavy rainfall. In the next few days, northwest India will receive scattered rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning, and hailstorms in Haryana. The rainfall will bring down temperatures and humidity in north India. IMD also predicted a dust storm over west Rajasthan, with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph. In its bulletin, IMD said conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over some parts of Gujarat, some more parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha during the next 24 hours, and over some parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and east UP during the subsequent three days. Northwest India to get scattered rainfall A trough runs from east MP to Bangladesh, and another runs from north Rajasthan to west MP. Under the influence of these systems, south, west, central, and northeast India will receive heavy rainfall. Northwest India will receive scattered rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.
In a 1st, Japan technique to help boost forest cover outside Palamu reserve
RANCHI: The forest officials will adopt the Miyawaki Technique developed in Japan to increase forest cover over the barren land on the outskirts of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Jharkhand. Miyawaki is a technique developed by scientist Akira Miyawaki, under which local plants are developed into a forest in three to four years. According to PTR Deputy Director Prajsesh Kant Jena, The soil is more enriched in the forest areas, and there are some open patches near Betla Forest, which could be easily converted into forest area. Initially, the plan was to plant multiple species, as done under the Miyawaki technique, and land was identified for it. But, instead of adopting the exact model, we started an experimental pre-step of the Miyawaki technique, naming it Bamboo Forest Creation, which will be a mono-species forest spread over 10 hectares of land with a water body. They have also found a social angle, under which they are asking every girl studying at the adjoining Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya to plant at least one plant, he added. According to Jena, nearly 10,000 bamboo saplings will be planted with the help of local villagers. Since bamboo grows very fast, it will be converted into a forest in the years to come, with a water body at the centre and a walkway, he said. With this, a Bamboo Retreat, on the lines of those found in Japan, will be created, which could be used for open schooling at the Kasturba Vidyalaya and an attraction for the local villagers and tourists visiting the Betla Forests as well. Jena said that with the onset of monsoon, nearly 10,000 bamboo saplings will be planted here on 10 hectares of land. As soon as it gets completed, we will go for complete Miyawaki technique on the barren patches near Betla Forests next year, with multi-species looking at the utilities of the local villagers, said Jena.

CRPF Jawan Killed In IED Blast During Anti-Naxal Operation Along Odisha-Jharkhand Border
CRPF ASIs death revives memories of Maoist days
ROURKELA: Death of a CRPF personnel during an anti-Naxal operation on Saturday morning has brought back memories of the troubled phase of Sundargarhs tryst with Maoist violence Renewed Maoist activities have come back to haunt Rourkela police with the loot of the explosive-laden truck on May 27. Before the incident, Sundargarh side of the border was relatively quiet with no significant Maoist movement. Now, it appears that taking advantage of the security gaps following withdrawal of CRPF from Sundargarh, Maoist have reactivated their old bases. Reliable sources said the Sanbalijodi, Mahupada, B Jharbera, Langalkata, Silkuta, Banko, Ralhatu, K Balang and Topadihi under K Balang police once served as stronghold for the Jharkhand regional committee of the outlawed CPI (Maoist). An encounter with police in 2005 near Renjda had left the then Bonai circle inspector MP Karua shot in his leg and the Maoists had firmly made their foothold in the forested regions of K Balang and adjoining Koida police limits. With no challenge offered, the Maoists had spread their influence in the entire Bonai sub-division using the forest covers of K Balang, Koida, parts of Lahunipada and Bonai, Chandiposh, Tikayatpali and Gurundia police stations as safe corridors. In 2009, the Maoist ultras had unleashed a reign of terror with brutal killings of poor and innocent villagers to reaffirm their influence. In March the same year, CITU leader Rabi Oram was killed and the next month, the headman of Langalkata village Deonath Singh was beheaded. What followed was a spate of bloody violence in the region. The Maoists had blown up four school buildings and one health centre under K Balang police in serial blasts in December 2009 and killed five villagers in 72 hours at Topadihi and Langalkata villages. About 3,000 villagers of affected pockets seeking police protection had twice moved to shelter camps during late 2009 and early 2010. However, death of two top-most local area commanders Sameer Xalxo and Md Muslim in February 2011 instilled fear among the Naxals. This was followed by a rush for surrenders and a gradual drop in Maoists activities in Sundargarh side of the border. Police sources said the situation has changed with the Maoists no more enjoying the confidence of villagers and affected pockets too have seen visible development. DIG (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai said the Rourkela police are allowing no room to Maoists to regroup and carrying out joint operation with Jharkhand police.

IED blast kills CRPF ASI in Odisha forest weeks after Maoists looted explosives
ROURKELA: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Jharkhand-based 134 CRPF battalion was martyred in an IED blast on Saturday early morning along the Odisha-Jharkhand border during a joint combing operation against Maoist operatives. The explosion occurred in the Banko forest under K Balang police station limits of Rourkela Police District (RPD), about 95 km from Rourkela, in Sundargarh district of Odisha. The martyred ASI, Satwan Singh (34), belonged to the 134 CRPF battalion stationed in West Singhbhum district of neighbouring Jharkhand. The blast site has remained tense, especially as it comes in the wake of the banned CPI (Maoist) operatives hijacking a truck and looting industrial explosives from the same Banko forest on May 27. After several years of relative calm, Naxal-related violence has resurfaced on the Odisha side of the border. Sources said that following the blast, the critically injured CRPF personnel was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Rourkela around 9:30 am, where he succumbed to his injuries around 11 am. DIG of Police (Western Range), Brijesh Kumar Rai, said, During the joint combing operation, an IED blast occurred around 5:45 am in the connecting Banko forest with the Saranda forest along the Odisha-Jharkhand border, in which a CRPF jawan was injured and later succumbed. He added that the Odisha-Jharkhand border has been put on high alert and security has been further beefed up. Both DIG Rai and Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani visited the hospital. SP Wadhwani said the anti-Maoist operation would continue with necessary safeguards. Following the explosive truck loot on the morning of May 27, security forces from Odisha, including SOG and DVF personnel, along with their counterparts from JharkhandCRPF, CoBRA and Jharkhand Jaguarhave been conducting intensified search and anti-Naxal operations in the Maoist stronghold of the dense Saranda forest in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. The hijacked truck was believed to be carrying nearly five tonnes of industrial explosives. During the ongoing operations, around 3.8 tonnes of the explosives have been recovered from different parts of the Saranda forest.

Jharkhand HC imposes Rs one lakh fine on JPSC for denying job to competent ST candidate
RANCHI: Upholding the order of single bench, the double bench of Jharkhand High Court headed by Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) for wrongfully rejecting a qualified Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidate Manoj Kumar Kachhaps application for the post of Assistant Professor. The court had earlier reserved its judgment after hearing arguments from both the parties. Kachhap had scored 72.10 out of a possible 85 marks in the academic evaluation. However, his name did not appear in the list of candidates shortlisted for interviews. Disappointed Kachhap made an enquiry and discovered that his application had been invalidated because the online examination fee, he had paid, did not reach the JPSC account due to some technical error. Owing to non-payment of the examination fees his application was considered invalid. Significantly, his name was not mentioned in the official rejection list, leaving him unaware of the issue. Kachhap then approached Jharkhand High Court and filed a writ petition. After a thorough hearing, a single bench of the High Court had given the verdict in his favour. The single bench ordered that he be included in the interview process, noting that the final decision would hinge on the court's verdict. JPSC complied, and Kachhap appeared for the interview. Although the final results were declared on December 23, 2021, one post remained unfilled in compliance with the court's interim directive. The court then asked JPSC to submit Kachhap's interview marks in a sealed envelope, which revealed that he had topped the entire selection process. The High Court observed, Since the candidate has appeared in the interview in the light of the court's order and has secured the highest marks in the examination, he cannot be excluded from the appointment process. In some examinations, the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category is not charged examination fee, so technical error cannot take away their right. The court also directed JPSC to appoint him to the vacant post within four weeks, saying that a technical glitch could not be grounds to deny appointment to the most meritorious applicant. JPSC, in its appeal argued that fee payment was mandatory and non-receipt disqualified a candidate automatically. Appearing on behalf of Kachhap, Advocate Savyasachi argued that his client had no way of knowing the transaction failure since he was not listed among the rejected candidates. The single bench judgement was then challenged by JPSC by filing an appeal in the division bench of the High Court. After considering submissions from both sides, the division bench upheld the single bench's order and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on JPSC on Friday.

Campaigns launched in Nov 22 inflict heavy damage on Maoists in Jharkhand
RANCHI: In a breakthrough for anti-Maoist operations in Jharkhand, a total of 19 Naxal operatives were gunned down in 2025 till June 10, compared to the 18 and 14 insurgents killed in 2024 and 2023, respectively. The year 2019 remains the most successful year against the red rebels in Jharkhand forests, with 31 Maoists gunned down by the police force. According to police data, 155 police encounters took place in the past five years, during which as many as 114 Maoists were neutralised. According to officials, aggressive crackdown by state police, especially the elimination of most-wanted Maoist leaders in encounters, has led to an internal rift and sparked fear in the Maoist organisations. The latest crackdown in April this year, killing eight Naxal operatives, including Vivek, a Central Committee member of CPI (Maoist) carrying a bounty of Rs 1 crore, in Lugu Pahar area of Bokaro, created panic among the Maoist cadre, officials asserted. This was the first instance that a Maoist with a reward of such magnitude was killed in an exchange of fire. Sources said the continuous police crackdown has spread panic among Naxalites, especially after recent encounters in areas like Bokaro, Latehar and Palamu. There are also reports that many among the Maoist folds are considering to surrender before cops and return to the mainstream. Notably, Maoists are now restricted only to Saranda jungles in Jharkhand. According to an estimate, around 90 Maoists are said to be hiding in Saranda jungles, where they have planted thousands of IEDs, making it nearly inaccessible.

On Woman Judge's Plea For Childcare Leave, Jharkhand Court's Response
A woman judge in Jharkhand who challenged the High Court's decision to curtail her childcare leave, or CCL, cannot take more than what she has been offered, the High Court has informed the Supreme Court.
NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday approved two key railway projects worth Rs 6,405 crore for the doubling of tracks in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Jharkhand, Minister for Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The decisions were taken at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Vaishnaw, who also holds the Railway portfolio, the project involves the doubling of KodermaBarkakana (133 km), passing through a major coal-producing area of Jharkhand. It will serve as the shortest and most efficient rail link between Patna, the capital of Bihar and Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, he added. Another proposal of doubling the track, which was approved, included BallariChikjajur (185 km), traversing through the Ballari and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka and the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, the Minister said. The approved projects will enhance connectivity to approximately 1,408 villages, which consist of a population of about 28.19 lakh. They will increase the existing network of the Indian Railways by about 318 km, Vaishnaw said. The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways, he said, adding that the multi-tracking proposal would also ease operations and reduce congestion. The Minister informed that the projects are a result of the Prime Ministers Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, which has been made possible through integrated planning. These are essential routes for the transportation of commodities, such as coal, iron ore, finished steel, cement, fertilisers, agricultural commodities and petroleum products. The capacity-augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of 49 million tonnes per annum, according to a government release. Both of these projects will cover seven districts across Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and are expected to be completed within three years, Vaishnaw said, adding that they are also environment-friendly and hold importance in terms of economic activity. The projects will reduce oil imports by 52 crore litres and lower the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by over 264 crore kg, which is equivalent to the plantation of 11 crore trees, the government said in the release.
