SC to hear defamation case against Rahul Gandhi over alleged remarks on Amit Shah on January 20
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's appeal on Monday, 20 January. The appeal challenges last year's Jharkhand High Court verdict rejecting his plea to quash a defamation case filed by a BJP leader over his alleged remark calling Home Minister Amit Shah a murderer during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign. According to the Supreme Court's cause list uploaded on the SC website on Sunday, a two-judge bench of the apex court, led by Justice Vikram Nath and also comprising Justice Sandeep Mehta, is slated to hear the Congress's Member of Parliament (MP), Gandhi's appeal on 20 January, Monday. The Leader of Opposition (LOP), Rahul Gandhi, had moved the apex court after the Jharkhand High Court dismissed his petition in February last year. The petition sought to quash an ongoing 2018 defamation case in a trial court. The defamation case was filed by a BJP leader, Navin Jha, who alleged in his complaint that Rahul Gandhi, during a Congress plenary session on 18 March 2018, made a speech against the BJP, allegedly calling Amit Shah a murder accused. In his defamation complaint, he further said that the Congress leader's comments were an insult to all workers, supporters, and leaders who have been working selflessly for the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). The Jharkhand HC judge, Justice Ambuj Nath, dismissed Gandhis plea after finding Gandhi's comments prima facie defamatory in nature. Prima facie the alleged statement (Rahul Gandhi) points out that Gandhi has imputed that the BJP leadership was drunk with power and was composed of liars. It further means that the party workers of the BJP will accept such person/persons as their leader. This imputation is prima facie defamatory in nature, the Jharkhand HC, had said, in its judgement, last year, before refusing to quash the defamation proceedings case going on in a trial court in Jharkhand.

JAIPUR: The Congress has strongly opposed the Rajasthan governments' decision to appoint outgoing Sarpanchs as administrators of Gram Panchayats. The party alleges that the move violates constitutional provisions and delays democratic processes. State Congress' Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Organization President, C.B. Yadav, has written to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, urging the government to conduct timely Panchayat elections. Yadav emphasised that the decision to delay elections contravenes Article 243-E of the Constitution and Section 95 of the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj Act, 1994. Rajasthan appoints Sarpanchs as administrators in gram panchayats following other BJP-ruled states There is no provision in the Constitution or the Panchayati Raj Act that allows the extension of tenure or postponement of elections under any circumstances once the five-year term has ended, he stated. On Thursday, the state government issued a notification appointing outgoing Sarpanchs as interim administrators for Gram Panchayats whose tenures are set to expire. The tenure of 6,759 Gram Panchayats across Rajasthan is scheduled ends on January 17, 2024. According to official sources, the government studied similar models implemented in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand before finalising the decision. Legal advice was sought, and discussions were held with representatives from the Sarpanch Sangh, who reportedly agreed to the move. The notification mandates district collectors to oversee the appointment of administrators and the formation of administrative committees in affected Panchayats. While Rajasthan has over 11,000 Gram Panchayats, their tenures do not end uniformly. For instance, 704 Panchayats will see their tenure expire in March, while 3,847 will face the same in September-October. The government claims the decision aims to synchronise the electoral process and ensure smooth administration in the interim. However, the Congress remains critical, accusing the government of undermining democratic principles by delaying elections unnecessarily. The issue has sparked a heated political debate, with calls for greater transparency and adherence to constitutional mandates in Panchayat governance.

Salima Tete becomes first woman hockey player from Jharkhand to receive Arjuna Award
RANCHI: Salima Tete, who once practised with bamboo sticks in her childhood, has become the first woman hockey player from Jharkhand to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award. President Draupadi Murmu presented the honour to Salima, the captain of the Indian womens hockey team, during the National Sports Awards ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. Earlier, in 1972, Olympian Michael Kindo was awarded the Arjuna Award, while Silvanus Dungdung and Sumrai Tete received the Major Dhyan Chand Award. Salimas journey in hockey has been one of resilience, as she overcame poverty and financial hardship to achieve success. The condition of her family home still highlights the struggles she has faced. When Salima was part of the Indian womens hockey team that competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, her village lacked a television. Following a report by The New Indian Express , the Prime Ministers Office intervened, and the district administration installed a TV set and a set-top box at her home. Honour equally belongs to team: Salima Tete Salima hails from Barkichapar village in Simdega, one of the most Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected districts in Jharkhand. Her village has 45 households, none of which had a TV until then. Salima was among 32 players recognised at the National Sports Awards ceremony. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, former Chief Minister Arjun Munda, and other leaders congratulated her on this significant milestone. Born into a poor tribal family, Salima began playing hockey with a bamboo stick for her village team and participated in local tournaments. Her father, Sulakshan Tete, is also a skilled hockey player, and her mother, Subhani Tete, is a homemaker. Salima used to participate in the Lathakhaman hockey tournament with her father every year. In 2011, Salimas talent was noticed by Manoj Konbegi, the organiser of the Lathakhaman hockey tournament and then joint secretary of Hockey Simdega, now the President of the Simdega Hockey Association. Salima won the Best Player award during the tournament. When I saw her playing at the village tournament in 2011, I spoke to her father, urging him to send her to the hockey centre to hone her skills, but he did not pay heed to my suggestions, said Konbegi. In 2012, I reminded him again, but he didnt respond. However, in 2013, he finally agreed to send her to the centre. Initially, Salima struggled to gain admission to the Hockey Residential Centre in Simdega. For two years, she stayed in another hostel run by the welfare department, cooked her meals using firewood, and practised with players from the residential centre. Looking at her talent and hard work, she was eventually inducted into the residential centre in 2013, Konbegi said. Within two months, Salima earned a spot on the Jharkhand team for the SGFI national competition. She never looked back after that, according to Konbegi. In 2014, she joined the states sub-junior hockey team, and in 2016, she was selected for the junior Indian womens hockey team and went on a tour to Spain. Later in 2016, Salima became the vice-captain of the junior Indian womens team for the Under-18 Asia Cup held in Bangkok, where the team won the bronze medal. That November, she was selected for the senior team and toured Australia. Salima gained significant recognition at the 2018 Youth Olympics, where she captained the Indian team to a silver medal. In 2024, she was appointed captain of the Indian womens hockey team. Her remarkable journey from practising with bamboo sticks in her village to leading the national team as captain is truly inspirational.

Jharkhand HC annuls relaxation in qualifying marks for Para-teachers
RANCHI: In a setback for para-teachers, the Jharkhand High Court on Friday ruled against granting relaxation in qualifying marks for the ongoing appointment process of 26,000 assistant teachers in the state. The court annulled the provision for mark relaxation, deeming it unjustified. The bench of Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice Deepak Roshan issued the order while hearing a petition challenging the 50% reservation for para-teachers and the relaxation in marks under the Assistant Teacher Appointment Rules. On Wednesday, the court had reserved its decision after hearing arguments from all parties. The petition was filed by Krishna Kumar Halder, with advocates Shubham Kumar Mishra, Kumar Pawan, and Shivam Utkarsh Sahay representing him. Advocates Sanjoy Piparwal, Radha Krishna Gupta, and Pinky Sahu appeared for the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission, while advocate Rahul Sabu represented the state government.
U19 WC: From Tennis To Cricket, grateful Parunika Sisodia Determined To Make Her Mark
Yamuna Sports Complex: Initially, Parunika Sisodia seems like any other teenager, with sparkling eyes and an honest smile. Parunika, however, isnt your average Indian teenager; she played tennis as an Under 12 player in New Delhi, looking up to Serena Williams and Sania Mirza. However, in January 2018, while watching her father, Sudhir, teach cricket at Yamuna Sports Complex in East Delhis Surajmal Vihar, Parunika became interested in the sport, trading her tennis racquet for a cricket ball. Since making that transition, her cricketing career has been through its ups and downs. But with gratitude, maturity and humour in her words, Parunika is poised to significantly contribute to Indias U19 Womens T20 World Cup campaign, aiming to retain the title they won in 2023. I am feeling very grateful because its a very exciting emotion playing for India, that too in a World Cup is a big thing. I am also grateful for this opportunity because I was there in the quadrangular series ahead of the last World Cup, but couldnt make it to the tournament. So now being here and playing for India in the World Cup is a very special moment for me, said Parunika in an exclusive conversation with IANS before leaving for Kuala Lumpur. Indias triumph in the inaugural Womens U19 Asia Cup, which co-incidentally happened in Malaysia last month, is also a big confidence boost. We know the conditions over there now. The Asia Cup win has definitely helped us to calm the chills we were having and now were just going to go there, play and do what we can do to our best. Our coaches have been pretty clear about the roles and what they have told us is to just express ourselves there. When we are on the field, just do whatever we feel right and they are there to back us up and enjoy the game, added Parunika, who now trains at RP Cricket Academy in Gargi College under Surjeet Verma and Ajay Verma. Amongst the highs in her bubbling cricketing career, where shes known for providing control, and bowling faster through the air with her variations, Parunika considers taking 5-26 on her debut for Delhi in the Senior Womens One-Day Trophy match against Jharkhand on October 31, 2021 as her fondest performance. I was straightaway called for seniors from U19 and everyone was just telling me to calm down. They were like Dont be nervous and just bowl. Even if you get hit, well just back you up. Then I went there and I came out with my first five-wicket haul. Till then, I never got a five-wicket haul and it came after the Covid-19 pandemic, she said. Parunikas success in her debut senior womens game is all more remarkable given that she only took up cricket three years ago, and admitted to not liking the sport when she was into tennis, even before becoming a proper left-arm spinner. I used to go with him for my fitness sessions, and then from there, I started playing cricket doing the summer camps there. It raised my interest and then in 2018, I thought this is the game I want to play now for the upcoming years, she added. Parunika and Sudhir, a former age-group cricketer for Uttar Pradesh who also played university cricket, believed shed excel as a batter despite her tennis background hindering her straight bat shots. The first womens match I saw, Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana were batting together, and looked up to them as I was starting off as a batter. So my dad said, You should look up to them and see what they are doing. Seeing them play, I thought Oh, girls play like this too as before then, I seriously had no idea about cricket that time. After I shifted to cricket, I was like, Oh girls play like this as well. Later, she switched to medium-pace bowling, but one day, she unexpectedly started bowling left-arm spin. One day it was raining. So we were not allowed to bowl medium-pace. I thought that, okay, Ill just bowl spin only then. Then I think I was bowling well and my father saw it and he was like, You have to bowl spin now. I was like, okay, and thats where my spin bowling came into picture. As soon as I started being a spinner, I saw Daniel Vettori and he has always been my idol. I really look up to him now. Named as a standby for Delhis U23 team, Parunika made her U19 debut in 2019/20, just before Covid-19 came, and became the seventh leading wicket-taker in the one-day tournament. Post-pandemic, Parunika became the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2021/22 Senior Womens One-Day Trophy with 14 scalps tied with three more bowlers on the list. In the next season, Parunika became the leading wicket-taker of the Senior Womens One-Day Trophy with 21 scalps and was also the top wicket-taker for North Zone winning the subsequent zonal tournament. Parunikas excellent performances led her to be roped in by the Gujarat Giants for the inaugural 2023 Womens Premier League (WPL) season. Parunika confessed she felt star-struck to be in the dressing room alongside prominent Indian and foreign players. The only thing I planned to do there was learn everything from them, like what and how they eat, how they do things and how theyre going to play a match, their schedules and everything. There I just did this only and I was very satisfied with that. Nooshin Al Khadeer, formerly the teams bowling coach and currently the head coach of India U19, was acquainted with Parunika. However, Parunika was more keen to meet Mithali, whom she admired since her childhood. I told my coaches that I want to meet and talk to Mithali mam because I idolised her. Then she came for the first day of practice, and said, Oh, hi Parunika, youre the left-hand spinner, right? I said, Yes, maam. I was so happy from inside that she knew my name and what I do in cricket. As soon as I got back to my room, I called my dad and told him You know, Mithali mam knows me. Despite her team finishing last in WPL 2023, Parunika gained invaluable experience in managing pressure and controlling her nerves. I had never seen so many people watching and cheering for a womens game. Whenever we used to have a match against Mumbai Indians, only the Mumbai supporters were there filling the stadium. So it was very nice to see people cheering, but we as a team were calming our nerves, playing there and showing what we could do. WPL has brought a different change in Indian players. The sadness of not being a part of the last India U19 batch, as they lifted the glittering World Cup trophy in 2023, also taught Parunika about focusing more on the controllables and what she can do the best for the team now in the upcoming tournament. In the U19 Womens Asia Cup, Parunika picked nine wickets and was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament behind fellow left-arm spinner Aayushi Shuklas ten scalps. Much of Indias success will rely on the left-arm spin quarter of Parunika, Aayushi, Sonam Yadav (the 2023 World Cup winner), and Vaishnavi Sharma, to befuddle and dominate opposing batsmen throughout the tournament. All of us are very chill about picking wickets. Whoever was playing, we were like, Oh, now its your day. There was a day where the three of us got four wickets one by one. So its like all of us were just waiting when the other one is getting wickets. So now we have four left-arm spinners, and all of us were just talking like One match each and were going to perform in one match each, so that we all are there in the game. Aside from cricket, Parunika said sleeping is one of her favourite hobbies now as it helps her recover after playing lots of cricket. When not sleeping, she goes out with her friends' gang to just chill. She doesnt have much pressure of studies as compared to other 12th graders, as her family has said Just learn how much you know that you can pass now and then you leave it. If India goes all the way to win their second U19 Womens T20 World Cup title on February 2, Parunika will feel fulfilled about continuing a legacy of the team being the best U19 womens side in the cricketing world, and spark greater interest in the sport amongst fans back home. Aside from cricket, Parunika said sleeping is one of her favourite hobbies now as it helps her recover after playing lots of cricket. When not sleeping, she goes out with her friends' gang to just chill. Jharkhand HC orders government to conduct municipal polls within four months
RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday directed the Hemant Soren-led State Government to ensure municipal elections are conducted within four months, that is, by May this year. The directions were passed by the court of Justice Ananda Sen during the hearing of a contempt petition filed by the outgoing Ranchi Municipal Corporation Councillor Roshni Khalkho and others. During the hearing, the court also expressed concern over the governments failure to comply with its earlier order, passed by the court on January 4, 2024, which required election dates to be announced within three weeks. Officials, including Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari and Urban Development Secretary Sunil Kumar, appeared in person during the proceedings. Citing reason behind not following the order, the state government submitted before the court that the process of triple test has almost been completed at the district level to determine the eligibility for reservation to backward classes. The process of triple test is pending in only a few districts, which will be completed very soon. The state government also informed that court that the voter list is yet to be received from the Election Commission of India, due to which, there is some delay. The petitioner on the other hand, told the court that the elections could be conducted without finalizing the triple-test process, referring a Supreme Court ruling that prohibits delaying elections solely for determining reservation quotas, further accusing that the state government is deliberately stalling the process and called for contempt action. The High Court had already criticized the government on January 13 for failing to conduct the elections, stating that the triple-test process cannot justify the delay. Earlier in January 2023, the High Court also directed the state government to conduct municipal elections within three weeks. The government, however, filed an affidavit asserting that the elections could only take place after the completion of the triple test. Though, the state government could have proceeded with elections without offering reservation to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community. However, it has expressed its commitment to completing the triple test process to ensure reservations for OBCs are given. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission had reportedly made all preparations to hold the elections without reservations, but the state government has remained firm on conducting them only after the triple test is completed. Notably, the tenure of all municipal bodies in Jharkhand ended in April 2023, with elections originally due by April 27, 2023. The prolonged delay prompted judicial intervention to address the matter. Centre halts Rs 1,600 crore fund release to Jharkhand over delayed municipal elections
Notorious 'Khan Brothers' of Siwan join Chirag Paswan's LJP(RV), eye Bihar assembly elections
PATNA: Crime and politics often go hand in hand, and this is exactly what happened when Ayub Khan and Rayees Khan, better known as the 'Khan brothers', formally joined the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), led by Union Minister Chirag Paswan, in Bihar's Siwan district late on Wednesday. Ayub Khan and Rayees Khan, whose names once spelt terror across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, had initially tried to join Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), but sources claimed that Nitish did not give his approval for their induction into the party. On Wednesday, the Khan brothers, along with their supporters, took membership of LJP (RV) in the presence of party chief Chirag Paswan. The Khan brothers had arranged a chopper for the party supremo for the 'Milan Samaroh' held at Sahuli High School Ground in Siwan. LJP (RV) on 'X' said, Ayub Khan and Rayees Khan, along with their supporters, joined the party after being inspired by Chirag Paswan's able leadership and his 'Bihar First, Bihari First' vision. This is a significant step towards commitment to the party's principles. Rayees Khan, the younger brother of Ayub Khan, has allegedly been involved in at least 30 cases of murder, kidnapping, dacoity, and extortion across three states. The Bihar government had announced a reward for his arrest after his name appeared in the kidnapping and murder of three youths from Siwan in 2022. In addition, he was also accused of being involved in the killing of two police personnelB K Yadav and Ganesh Prasad Yadavin Siwan district. Rayees Khan's name appeared on the list of the 10 most-wanted criminals of Siwan, recalled a senior IPS officer who previously served as the SP of Siwan. In 2022, Rayees Khan unsuccessfully contested local body elections from Siwan. During the election campaign, his election vehicle was allegedly attacked by political opponents. Rayees had then accused former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin's son Osama and his supporters of orchestrating the attack. Osama, along with eight others, were named as accused in the FIR lodged with the Siwan police. In the FIR, Rayees Khan alleged that bullets were fired at his vehicle with an AK-47 assault rifle with the intent to eliminate him. However, he luckily survived the attack. The Khan brothers initially worked for Mohammad Shahabuddin's gang but parted ways after Shahabuddin's father, Mohammad Kamrul Haque, decided to contest the assembly elections in 2005. Sources said that Shahabuddin got angry over the Khan brothers' decision and distanced himself from them. Rayees Khan was arrested from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, in 2006 after a warrant for his arrest was issued by a Siwan court. At least 30 cases of murder, loot, dacoity, kidnapping, and extortion were lodged against Rayees in different police stations of Siwan (Bihar) and Ballia (Uttar Pradesh). Rayees recently announced that he would contest the assembly elections from Siwan. Sources close to the Khan brothers said that Rayees was lobbying for JD(U) and even held meetings with the party's working president Sanjay Kumar Jha and other senior leaders, but his efforts were in vain. He formally joined LJP (RV) in the presence of party supremo Chirag Paswan on January 15.

BHOPAL: Considered as the hub of cement industries in the country, Satna district in the Vindhya region of Madhya Pradesh is turning out to be a fertile base for mule accounts --which are being used not just to park and move money earned by cyber fraudsters, but also serving as route for transfer of funds of suspected terror financing. Mule account refers to a bank account that is used to facilitate illegal activities such as money laundering and fraudulent transactions. Focused investigations by cyber cell of the MP police based on specific inputs provided by the anti-terror squad (ATS) have led to a massive inter-state racket, which has been opening bank accounts in the name of downtrodden people after promising to credit benefits of various government schemes in those accounts. The same mule accounts whose net banking control particularly is in the hands of the fraudsters (who got the accounts opened by posing as representatives of banks) are then being sold to cyber fraudsters across the country to park and route the proceeds of cyber-crime. Detailed investigations have also brought to the fore a strong possibility of the same mule accounts also being used for suspected terror financing through overseas connections. Around 400-500 such mule accounts have so far been traced, majority of which were opened by fraudsters in the name of low-income people residing in Satna district and neighbouring Jabalpur district. Ongoing probe suggests that a monstrous sum of more than Rs 1500 crores has been routed by cyber fraudsters as well as suspected terror financers (having overseas connections) through the mule accounts opened in the name of people of Satna district of Vindhya region and Jabalpur district of adjoining Mahakoshal region of MP. The 16 security guards of one prominent cement factory: In December 2024, the MP ATS got the whiff of the mule accounts-aided cyber fraud and suspected terror funding racket, when 16 private security personnel (all from economically weak families) working at a prominent cement factory in Satna district, approached the local police. The MP ATS shared with the cyber cell, inputs about possible presence of a massive racket, engaged in opening mule accounts in the name of people from lower socio-economic strata in Satna, Jabalpur and adjoining districts with the promise of crediting in those accounts, the monetary benefits under various government schemes, like Kisan Samman Nidhi, Old Age Pension Scheme, Sambal Scheme and Unemployment Allowance scheme. One of the security guards, whose bank account was opened by the fraudsters checked with the concerned banks kiosk about his newly opened bank accounts details. He remained shocked to find that transactions worth lakhs of rupees had been done through the account opened in his name. Similar money trail was detected in the accounts opened in the name of the other security guards of the same cement unit in Satna district. Investigations brought to the fore that some local men from Satna district as well as some youngsters from Jabalpur district met the 16 security guards of the cement unit, while posing as representatives of banks. Subsequently, those men convinced the guards to open bank accounts which would enable the guards in getting benefits under various government schemes. Probe also revealed that while the accounts were opened in the banks using details of the security guards, the fraudsters who posed as bank employees/representatives got their own phone numbers entered in KYC documents to ensure that net banking access of those accounts (mule accounts) stayed with them only. Subsequently, those accounts were sold to cyber fraudsters in various states of India to park and rotate money earned through various modes of cyber frauds, a cyber cell officer forming part of the ongoing probe told this newspaper. Acting in the matter, the state police have arrested at least 23 men forming part of the mule account racket, which has its key players operating from MP, Delhi, Haryana and Telangana. Most of the arrested men, including prime players Mohd Mashooq, Sajid Khan and Chanchal Vishwakarma hail from Satna district only. Ongoing probe after the early morning MP police raid at a flat in a multi-storied building in Gurugram on January 7, had helped the unearthing of fake call center. As many as 14 laptops, 85 debit cards, five QR codes and one tablet were seized, which suggested that the mastermind Mohd Mashooq was running a call center there to dupe people. A simultaneous probe by the MP ATS has thrown up strong possibility of the same mule accounts (which are being used by cyber fraud rackets to park and rotate the proceeds of their fraud) being used to route huge sums for terror financing. While investigations suggest that over Rs 1500 crore have been parked and routed through the mule accounts opened in the name of poor and low economic strata people, well worked inputs with the state police strongly points that major part of that sum could be actually destined for suspected terror funding with overseas connections, a highly placed MP police officer told this newspaper on Wednesday. MPs Satna districts bond with mule accounts-cyber fraud and suspected terror financing dates back to 2017. In February 2017, the MP ATS busted a Chinese SIMBOX enabled illegal phone exchange-aided ISI spying ring. Probe revealed that Pakistans ISI handlers were using Chinese SIMBOX enabled parallel phone exchanges at multiple dozen locations spread across India, including Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Satna districts of MP to dupe people via online and lottery fraud. The money earned by the callers operating from Pakistan (whose identities were masked as calls converted into local GSM cell-phone calls by parallel exchanges) by duping people particularly in South and East India was parked in 200-odd accounts in 25-plus nationalised and private banks in Satna and Rewa districts of MPs Vindhya region. All these bank accounts were managed by Satna-based Balram Singh (an ex-Bajrang Dal man) using the ATM cards of actual account holders. Pakistani handlers parked whopping sums in 2015 and 2016 in those mule accounts via Balram in return for commissions to the account holder. The money parked in these accounts of banks in the two MP was later withdrawn by Balram and then transferred to the bank accounts managed by an old Delhi based terror financer, who subsequently routed that money to ISI spies (via a clutch of traders on both sides of the LoC) operating in bordering areas of Jammu and Kashmir, including Satwindar and Dadu, who were arrested in RS Pura sector of Jammu in 2016. Two and half years later in 2019, the MP ATS was again in action in a similar case, by busting another suspected spying funding ring which was being guided by Pakistan-based ISI handlers. Three men, including Balram Singh (who was out on bail in the 2017 case), Sunil Singh and Shubham Mishra were arrested from their native Satna district for allegedly parking phone lottery and other telephonic fraud money in multiple bank accounts before transferring the money to bank accounts in other states at the behest of ISI handlers in Pakistan. The phone fraud money which were being parked in multiple bank accounts in Madhya Pradesh and other states, including West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, was possibly being used by the Pakistan-based handlers to fund spying on Indias strategic interests which in the long run could have been used to wage war and terror activities against India. The cell-phones seized from the arrested trio by the Satna district police contained at least 17 Pakistani phone numbers on which the trio was regularly making WhatsApp calls, Net calls, besides sending audio and video messages. They sent video messages to Pakistani handlers to greet the handlers of Pak Independence Day. In a departure from the 2017 case, when Balram and his aides hired bank accounts of others (particularly poor people in return for monthly rent) to park and transfer the fraud money, the trio arrested in 2019 and their aides spread across the country, particularly in Satna and adjoining districts of MP and UP used their own multiple bank accounts to park and transfer money possibly to fund spying and also terror. Knowing well that parking major money volumes in accounts would bring them under IT Department radar, Balram and aides didnt park more than Rs 50,000 in their accounts in Satna district, but instead regularly transferred money into bank accounts of other operatives of the funding racket operating in Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand, which was then possibly routed to those spying in India at behest of Pak handlers. Balram and aides got 8%-10% commission from Pak handlers on each money transaction.
Political heat grows in Jharkhand as JMM's Dulal Bhuiyan eyes BJP switch after Raghubar Das return
RANCHI: The political landscape in Jharkhand has started to heat up following the return of Raghubar Das to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After the recent induction of senior leader Champai Soren into the BJP, another veteran Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader, former minister and three-time MLA Dulal Bhuiyan, is reportedly on the verge of joining the party. According to BJP sources, Bhuiyan has been in regular contact with Das and is expected to join the party within a day or two. People close to Bhuiyan have revealed his growing dissatisfaction with the JMM, claiming that the party no longer respects its senior leaders. Senior leaders were given respect till the command of the party was in the hands of Shibu Soren, but since he is not active these days due to his ill health, party workers and senior leaders are being ignored by his successors, they said. Bhuiyan himself admitted that he is in talks with Das and will make his decision based on guidance from him. Raghubar Das has been an old political friend of mine, and we have prior experience of working together, Bhuiyan stated. He added that, given the new political equations in Jharkhand, he is prepared to join the BJP along with his team. Bhuiyans son, Viplav Bhuiyan, is also likely to join the BJP. Notably, Viplav contested the Jugsalai Assembly seat in Jamshedpur as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the JMM, but he lost. JMM General Secretary Vinod Pandy, commenting on the matter, said, Bhuiyan has to take a call on his next move. But, if he has any grievances, he should put them at the right forum. Meanwhile, Raghubar Das has returned to action, making statements aimed at energising the BJP cadre. There is speculation that Das might either replace Babulal Marandi as the state president or be given another senior role, given his credentials as a cadre-based leader. Das, who joined the Jan Sangh as an ordinary cadre in the 1970s, is widely regarded as an ideologically committed politician. Das became the first non-tribal chief minister of Jharkhand, completing a full five-year term due to his strong connections within the party cadre and his dedication. The BJPs decision to appoint him as Odishas governor was seen as a move to strengthen Marandis influence in Jharkhand. However, Marandis leadership has not yielded results, with the BJP failing to wrest control from the JMM-led coalition in the 2024 elections. The BJP is now under pressure to consolidate support among Jharkhands 74 per cent non-tribal population, especially given that the states tribal population, comprising 26 per cent, largely supports the JMM-led coalition. The recent defections of influential JMM leaders like Champai Soren and the potential inclusion of Bhuiyan are part of a larger BJP strategy to solidify its position in the state. Champai Sorens switch to the BJP has already created significant ripples, and Dulal Bhuiyans likely defection is expected to further bolster the partys foothold in Jharkhand.

Ranchi: A new case of fraud involving computer operators has emerged in the Maiyan Samman Yojana, where financial assistance intended for women beneficiaries was found to have been credited into the bank accounts of unrelated individuals. In one case, the financial assistance meant for eight women was deposited into a single woman's bank account in Kharaundi, Garhwa. Similarly, funds meant for six female beneficiaries were wrongly credited to the bank account of a man. Irregularities involving computer operators have been reported across the state, causing many women to take to the streets in protest, demanding their rightful financial assistance. Those whose funds have not been transferred to their bank accounts have been visiting government offices in large numbers, seeking their due payments. In an incident from Kupa Panchayat, the financial assistance for six beneficiaries of the Maiyan Samman Yojana was credited into the bank account of Satyanarayan Gupta. Likewise, the amounts for Sunita Devi, Rani Kumari, Devanti Devi, Punita Devi, Chani Kumari, and Savita Devi of Kupa were transferred to the account of Resham Devi. Upendar Yadav, the husband of one of the affected women, Savita Devi from Chauria village under Khiraundi Block, has lodged a complaint with the Block Development Officer (BDO) against the computer operator, Navin Patel. In his complaint, Yadav stated that instead of linking his wifes bank account to the Maiyan Samman Yojana scheme, the operator had linked his own wifes account, Resham Kumari. As a result, the financial assistance intended for Savita Devi was being credited to the account of the computer operator's wife. The 'Samman Rashi' meant for my wife, Savita Kumari, is being credited to the bank account of the computer operators wife, Resham Kumari. Since the forgery was deliberately carried out by the CSC computer operator, the entire amount should be recovered from him, and an FIR should be filed against him, Yadav said in his complaint. The women whose accounts received the funds of others have reported that they were required to pay a commission to the computer operator, with half of the amount they received going to him. After the issue came to light, Kharondi BDO Ravindra Kumar assured that action would be taken against those found guilty following a thorough investigation. Large-scale irregularities are suspected across the entire block. Garhwa Deputy Commissioner Shekhar Jamuar confirmed that he had been made aware of the situation and vowed to take proper action. We will have every case investigated, and those found guilty will not be spared at any cost, said the Deputy Commissioner. This is not the first time such irregularities have been reported. In Bokaros Kasmar Block, two computer operators were discovered to be benefiting from the Maiyan Samman Yojana in their own bank accounts. Following this discovery, an FIR was filed against one of them. Launched in August this year by the Hemant Soren Government, the Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojana is a flagship programme providing financial assistance to women aged between 21 and 50 years. The scheme originally offered Rs 1000 per month to each beneficiary through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), but the amount was increased to Rs 2500 ahead of the Assembly elections due to the scheme's popularity.

Parents protest against principal's humiliation of 80 schoolgirls in Dhanbad
Members of the Jharkhand Abhivawak Mahasangh (JAM), an organisation of parents and guardians, held a token hunger strike on Tuesday, demanding action against the principal of a Dhanbad school. The principal allegedly ordered 80 class 10 girls to remove their shirts after they wrote messages on them during a pen day celebration last week. The parents' body claimed that the district administration had given a clean chit to the principal, whose directive led to the students being sent home in blazers, without their shirts, on January 10. Despite conducting an inquiry, the district authorities have not commented on the clean chit given to the female principal of the reputed private school. Eleven office-bearers of JAM staged the hunger strike from 10 am to 4 pm at Randhir Verma Chowk, demanding strict action against the principal. However, none of the hunger strikers were the parents or guardians of the affected girls. JAM Secretary Manoj Mishra said that the inquiry team, which included the sub-divisional officer (SDO) and sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), was formed by Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra following a complaint from the parents. After the humiliation of the children, the DC directed the SDO to probe into the incident, but he gave a clean chit to the principal and recommended a compromise between the school management and parents, said Mishra. Efforts to reach the DC and SDO for comment were unsuccessful. Mishra expressed that the parents now hoped the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), who were part of the probe team, would take action. DLSA Secretary Rakesh Roshan stated that they would submit their report to the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority, while CWC Chairman Uttam Mukherjee confirmed that a report had been sent to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in New Delhi. In response to the incident, the school management asked the principal to refrain from administrative duties until the inquiry is completed. Parents of the students reported that the principal had objected to the pen day celebration, where students wrote messages on their shirts, and had ordered them to remove their shirts despite their apology. The affected students were sent home in blazers without their shirts.

RANCHI: Taking a dig at the Hemant Soren Government in Jharkhand, State BJP President Babulal Marandi has questioned the rationale behind providing financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to young women under the Maiyan Samman Yojana, while widows and elderly women are receiving pension of only Rs 1,000. Posting his views on social media platform X , Marandi said, The government should reconsider the decision to trample on the rights of the most vulnerable class, helpless widowed women. He shared a video of an elderly widow who expressed her discontent with the disparity. In the video, the woman stated, Those who are physically capable of making money are getting Rs 2,500, and I am getting only Rs 1,000 as widow pension, which is not enough to meet my requirements. Despite complaints made by the woman, villagers did not take action against the perpetrator. Taking the matter into her own hands, the woman decided to punish him. On Friday, the mother and daughter bought electric wire. They removed the safety cover and wrapped the wire around a bamboo stick, connected it to a live copper wire and laid it in front of their door. Raju did not show up on Friday. Men found taking financial aid from 'Maiyan Samman Yojana' in Jharkhand; FIR lodged
RANCHI: Even as thousands of women recently took to the streets for being denied the financial aid under Maiyan Samman Yojana, men have been found taking benefits of the scheme in Jharkhand. According to officials, at least two men have been found getting the aid for the last four months. The two men have been identified as Aanand Kumar Prajapati from Majhura village and Rupesh Ghasi from Telmunga under Kasmar block of Bokaro district. Kasmar block development officer Namrata Joshi said Prajapati was running a Pragya Kendra and taking the assistance in his bank account by submitting an application form filled up in his name. An FIR has been lodged against Prajapati at Kasmar police station after recovering Rs 6500 received by him in five installments, Rs 1000 four times and Rs 2,500 once, Joshi said, adding his Pragya Kendra licence has been cancelled. The BDO said the entire amount has also been recovered from Ghasi but no FIR has been filed against him due to technical reasons he was an employee at the Pragya Kendra and was not using his own ID for filling up the form. We are waiting for the directions from senior officials, on the basis of which further action will be taken, Joshi said. In another case, Dashmi Kumari of Araju village in Bokaro has written an application to the BDO, requesting that the assistance given to her is being credited into the back account of one Satosh Kumar whom she does not know. Santoshs account number has been entered instead of her bank account number, and the money should be recovered from Santosh and transferred to her account, she said. So far, Rs 6500 has been transferred to Santoshs account. Earlier, following reports that several women not eligible for the scheme have been taking benefits, a campaign was launched in the state to identify such people and remove their names from the beneficiary list. The directorate of social security has asked the district collectors to delete the names of ineligible beneficiaries and submit reports.

Jharkhand: Men found taking benefits of Mainiya Samman Yojana, FIR lodged
RANCHI: Despite thousands of women denied the benefits of Mainiya Samman Yojana, several men have been found taking benefits of the scheme. According to officials, at least two men have been found getting the financial assistance credited in their account for the last four months. Those men, who have been found taking benefits of the scheme, have been identified as Aanand Kumar Prajapati and Rupesh Ghasi, hailing from Majhura and Telmunga villages respectively, under Kasmar Block of Bokaro. Kasmar Block Development Officer said that Anand Kumar Prajapati was running a Pragya Kendra and was taking the financial assistance in his bank account by submitting an application form filled up in his own name. We have identified two men -- Aanand Kumar Prajapati and Rupesh Ghasi, fraudulently taking benefits of Mainiya Samman Yojana in Kasmar Block. An FIR has been lodged against Anand Kumar Prajapati at Kasmar Police Station after recovering the entire amount of Rs 6500 received by him in four instalments, Rs 1000 for four times and Rs 2500 once, said Kasmar Block Development Officer Namrata Joshi. In addition to that, Kasmar the license of the Pragya Kendra being run by Anand has also been cancelled, she added. According to the BDO, the entire amount has also been recovered in the case of Rupesh Ghasi but no FIR has been filed against him due to technical reasons that he was merely an employee at the Pragya Kendra and was not using his own ID for filling up the form. We are waiting for the directions from the senior officials, on the basis of which, further action will be taken, said the BDO. In another such case, Dashmi Kumari, a resident of Araju of Jaridih in Bokaro, has written an application to the BDO, requesting that the financial assistance given to her, is being credited into the back account of one Santosh Kumar, whom she does not know. Santosh's account number has been entered instead of her bank account number, and hence, the money should be recovered from Santosh Kumar and transferred to her account, she said. So far, Rs 6500 has been transferred to Santosh's account. Notably, following reports that several women, who are not even eligible for the scheme, have been taking benefits of the scheme, a campaign was launched in the state to identify such people and remove their names from beneficiary list of the scheme. The Directorate of Social Security has asked the DCs of all districts to look into it and delete the names of ineligible beneficiaries and submit a report in this regard. Anganwadi Sevika and Sahayika have been roped in to verify the beneficiaries of the scheme. If any such person is found to be taking benefits of the scheme, she has to return it along with interest. In the process of verification a number of cases came into light taking double benefit and men taking advantage of the scheme. As of now, more than 32000 fake applications have been found all over the state, which are being cancelled. At the same time, over 5000 cases have also been found, where the beneficiaries are taking double benefits (taking benefits of multiple schemes). Notably, Mukhyamantri Mainiya Samman Yojana, the flagship programme of Hemant Soren Govenment, launched in August this year, is an ambitious scheme of the state government, under which, all women aged between 21 to 50 years in the state are getting financial assistance of Rs 1000 every month in their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). But, looking at its popularity before the Assembly polls, the financial assistance was increased to Rs 2500 from Rs 1000. The much awaited first installment of Rs 2500 under Mainiya Samman Yojana were transferred to the bank accounts of 56.62 lakh women through direct benefit transfer (DBT) on January 6. Chief Minister Hemant Soren transferred Rs 11415.44 crore to the bank accounts of 56.62 lakh women during a grand programme organised in Ranchi.

Jharkhand principal sends 80 girls home in blazers without shirts
A principal of a private school in Dhanbad's Digwadih area is facing severe backlash after allegedly ordering 80 Class 10 girls to remove their shirts, leaving them to return home wearing only their blazers. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has drawn widespread condemnation and prompted the district administration to initiate an inquiry, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra confirmed on Saturday. The controversy began when Class 10 students celebrated 'Pen Day' after their examination by writing farewell messages on each other's shirts, a common tradition among school students. The principal reportedly objected to the activity, calling it inappropriate. Despite the students' apologies, the principal allegedly insisted they remove their shirts immediately. Parents have alleged that the students, some of whom lived far from the school, were forced to walk home in their blazers without shirts underneath. Many of the students were reportedly embarrassed and distressed by the incident. The parents approached DC Madhvi Mishra with their grievances, accusing the principal of humiliating the girls. Our children were made to feel ashamed and were sent home inappropriately dressed. This is a clear violation of their dignity, one parent stated. The incident took place in a well-known school in the Digwadih locality, under the jurisdiction of Jorapokhar police station. The DC has assured a thorough investigation into the matter. This is a serious issue. We are investigating the facts and will ensure appropriate action is taken against those responsible, Mishra said. While the school management has remained silent, the incident has sparked outrage among residents and activists. Many have criticized the alleged actions as a severe lapse in judgment by the school authorities. This reflects a lack of basic empathy and understanding toward students. Such behavior cannot be tolerated, a local social worker commented. The incident has also ignited debates about disciplinary practices in educational institutions. Many parents have demanded a review of the school's policies to ensure that students' dignity and welfare are safeguarded. The inquiry is ongoing, and authorities have promised swift action. Meanwhile, the affected students and their families continue to grapple with the emotional impact of the incident, calling for justice and accountability.

Jharkhand school forces 100 girls to remove shirts as punishment; probe initiated
RANCHI: In a deeply troubling incident, more than 100 Class 10 students at Carmel School in Dhanbad were reportedly forced to remove their shirts and sent home wearing only blazers as punishment for celebrating Pen Day on Thursday. The girls, who were marking the last day of school by writing good wishes on each others shirts, were reprimanded by Principal M. Devashree, who allegedly claimed that such behavior would harm the schools reputation. She reportedly ordered the students to remove their shirts to avoid them leaving campus with dirty clothing. The incident has triggered outrage among parents. Many of them gathered at the Deputy Commissioners (DC) office on Saturday to file a formal complaint against the school management, as the school was closed on Friday. According to parents, the students were made to remove their shirts on the school campus, in some cases in front of male teachers. Scared by the principals behavior, the girls complied on the campus itself. When some hesitated, they were coerced. While about 20 students had spare shirts, over 100 girls were sent home wearing only blazers, alleged a parent who requested anonymity. Another parent described the incident as mental harassment. We were shocked to learn that our daughters were subjected to this humiliation. The managements actions are indefensible. It was a form of mental assault, said the parent, adding that mobile phones were confiscated from students to ensure the incident was not recorded. JMM plans to expand tribal movement in Bengal, Odisha
RANCHI: Buoyed by the thumping majority in the Assembly polls, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is now eying Vrihad (larger) Jharkhand and is considering launching a movement for the formation of an Autonomous Council combining the four tribal-dominated districts of West Bengal and Odisha. According to officials, the party has already prepared a blueprint and will start the movement in the name of separate identity of tribal dominated districts of the two states. The party is also plans to get its entire strategy and proposal passed in the upcoming convention. According to the partys Central General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya, the condition of the tribals has still not improved in tribal-dominated districts of neighbouring states like Odisha and West Bengal. He added that a movement demanding formation of an autonomous council by combining the four tribal dominated districts --- Jhargram, West Medinipur, Bankura and Purulia of West Bangal and the three districts -- Keonjhar, Myurbhanj and Sundargarh of Odisha, will soon start. Bhattacharya added that tribals in the seven districts of West Bengal and Odisha Jharkhand are similar. Since the tribal communities are still exploited, a separate autonomous council is essential to protect their interests. Partys central spokesperson Manoj Pandey also asserted that the tribal-dominated districts of West Bengal and Odisha bordering Jharkhand need a separate autonomous council to improve the tribals living standards. Vrihad Jharkhand is still on our agenda, and hence, the demand for an autonomous council will be intensified to pave way for our long time demand of Vrihad Jharkhand, said Pandey. The JMM has a strong support base in Odisha and Bengal and has also won MLA and MP seats in these states. After defeating the BJP in the Jharkhand Assembly Elections- 2024, the partys popularity is at its peak, Pandey said. The BJP, on the other hand, has termed it a plot to mislead the tribals. JMM should first talk to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and the Odisha government and put forward its demand. The tribal communities of the states should not be misled by raising the demand for an autonomous council for a separate identity.

Delhi polls: BJP takes out Poorvanchal Samman Yatra
NEW DELHI: In its bid to win over the Poorvanchalis, who comprise about 40 per cent of the citys electorate, ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls, the BJP on Friday held a Poorvanchal Samman Yatra with a tagline Poorvanchaliyon ke samman me, BJP maidan mein (the BJP to fight for Purvanchalis dignity). The BJP plans to corner AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal over his recent fake voters from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh comment. Mr Kejriwal, on Thursday, had accused the BJP of bringing people from Bihar and neighbouring UP to enrol them as voters in his New Delhi Assembly constituency. He even lodged a complaint with the Election Commission. With the issue of fake voters gaining traction in the days leading to the polls, both the BJP and the AAP have resorted to a poster war. While the BJP accuses Mr Kejriwal and his party of denigrating the Poorvanchalis, the ruling AAP launched a counterattack, saying the former CM has undertaken a lot of initiatives for the uplift of the community. The BJP poster reading Poorvanchal samaj ka apmaan, Sheesh Mahal ka nawab Kejriwal ki pehchan (the nawab of Sheesh Mahal has hurt the Poorvanchal community) labelled Mr Kejriwal hostile to the Poorvanchal community. The BJP accused Mr. Kejriwal of dubbing Purvanchalis as farzi (fake) voters and had deserted them during the Covid-19 crisis while consistently ridiculing them when opportunities arose. A day after BJP chief J.P. Nadda launched a scathing attack on Mr Kejriwal on Thursday, accusing him of insulting the people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, thousands of BJP workers held a protest in the national capital, raising slogans against the former chief minister. The BJP protest was led by Dinesh Pratap Singh and saw the participation of prominent faces of the party from Poorvanchal, like Abhay Verma, Manish Singh and Vipin Bihari Singh, among others. Heads of the Delhi BJP women wing and youth wing Richa Pandey Mishra and Sagar Tyagi, respectively, also joined in. Holding placards reading Purvanchal Virodhi Kejriwal (Poorvanchali baiter Kejriwal), the BJP workers raised slogans such as Litti chokha khayenge, Kejriwal bhagayenge, Chhathi Maiya ki jai and Poorvanchal Virodhi Kejriwal murdabad echoed during the protest. Third-term Lok Sabha member of the BJP from Northeast Delhi Manoj Tiwari, who hails from Bihar, said, Mr Kejriwal has always insulted the Poorvanchali community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he made several objectionable statements and now he has referred to them as 'fake voters'. We will not forget this insult and neither will the people of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar. This betrayal will remain etched in the memory of Delhiites as well. Poorvanchalis will give a befitting reply to the AAP and Mr Kejriwal by bringing the BJP to power in February, Mr Tiwari added. In a counterattack, the AAP chief accused the BJP-led Union government for neglecting the Poorvanchal community over the last decade. Mr Kejriwal said that while the AAP government has worked tirelessly to uplift unauthorised colonies, provide water and sewer pipelines and improve education and healthcare, the BJP, despite holding immense power and resources, has failed to deliver anything substantial for Poorvanchalis over the last decade. Both the BJP and the AAP are embroiled in a bitter battle to win over the Poorvanchalis because they hold sway in about 20 Assembly seats. The fact that since the 1990s both Congress and the BJP have been giving representation to the community bears testament to Poorvanchalis' political clout. While the BJP and the AAP slug it out, the Congress too is working overtime to woo the Poorvanchalis. Bihar Congress chief Akhilesh Prasad Singh, who is in Delhi on Friday, said that the party will build a separate Chhath Ghat at the Yamuna banks on the lines of Maha Kumbh. He alleged that the BJP and the AAP treat people of Poorvanchal only as votebanks. Poorvanchalis, a traditional vote bank of the Congress, switched sides and voted en masse for the AAP in the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls. However, when Mr Tiwari took control of the Delhi BJP, they voted in favour of the saffron party in the 2017 civic polls. In 2020 Assembly polls, they, however, again voted for the AAP, bringing the Kejriwal-led government to power for the third time. Some of the Purvanchali-dominated seats in Delhi include Burari, Seemapuri, Gokalpuri, Karawal Nagar, Kirari, Badli, Nangloi, Rithala, Matiala, Vikaspuri, Dwarka, Uttam Nagar, Sangam Vihar, Deoli, Badarpur, Tughlakabad, Patparganj, Laxmi Nagar, Wazirpur and Rajinder Nagar.
Will come back soon: Former Odisha Governor Raghubar Das after rejoining BJP
RANCHI: Former Odisha Governor Raghuar Das on Friday started his second innings with BJP by formally rejoining the party in the presence of top party leaders at the state BJP headquarters in Ranchi. State BJP President Babulal administered party membership to Das. After coming back to the BJP fold, it feels like being in the lap of the mother, he said. Addressing the gathering after joining the party, Das vowed to come back soon into power. We could not get the expected results in the recent Assembly elections in Jharkhand, but we need not be desperate of disappointed, we will have to fight back, we will to struggle and win back once again, and we will come back soon, said Das. This day is historical day for me as I am taking BJPs members for the second time after 1980, he added. Das warned the JMM-led government that the party will wait for six months and keep a watch on whether the government has fulfilled the promises made to the people or not. If they fail to fulfill their promises, the party will consider it an insult to the mandate and will launch a movement on the streets in order to establish a strong government in the state, he said. Notably, Das was appointed the Governor of Odisha on 18 October 2023. He started his political career in Jamshedpur and was elected the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who completed five years tenure from 2014 to 2019. Das was also the first non-tribal Chief Minister of Jharkhand. In the 2019 Assembly polls, Raghubar Das lost to rebel MLA Saryu Roy, who rebelled against the BJP. The BJPs decision to appoint Das as Odishas governor was seen as a move to grant Babulal Marandi greater influence in Jharkhand. Marandi, who merged his party (the JVM) with the BJP in 2020, was unable to wrest control from the JMM-led coalition in the 2024 elections. In light of the BJPs recent underperformance in the assembly elections, there is growing pressure within the party to focus on consolidating support from Jharkhands 74% non-tribal population. The tribal population, which constitutes 26% of the state, largely supported the JMM-led coalition. It was being expected since long that he will return to active politics after resigning from the post of Odisha Governor. Earlier on September 11, Das had changed the colour of the profile picture of Odisha Governor Raghunar Das on X and Facebook, sparking speculations over his return to Jharkhand politics once again. Interestingly, Das changed the frame of his profile picture on social media platforms to green and saffron for some time, but as soon as it went made viral on social media, it was replaced immediately with the earlier photograph. It was also believed in the political circles that Das might contest from his old seat Jamshedpur East in the recently held Assembly elections, but due to some unknown reasons the idea was postponed and his daughter-in-law was fielded from there.

BJP holds protests near Kejriwal's residence over 'fake' voter registrations
NEW DELHI: The Delhi BJP held a protest on Friday against the AAP for allegedly making fake claims about registration of voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the electoral rolls ahead of assembly polls. Hundreds of protesters holding placards like Purvanchal Virodhi Kejriwal raised slogans against AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, with some attempting to breach the security barricades near his residence. Slogans such as Litti chokha khayenge, Kejriwal bhagayenge, Chhathi Maiya ki jai, and Purvanchal Virodhi Kejriwal murdabad echoed during the protest. A protester, speaking to PTI, said, Purvanchalis have been called fake voters. This anger will not subside until we remove Kejriwal from here. Another protester added, He has humiliated us. During Anna Hazare's movement, he used us and made us endure police lathis. And now, he is calling us fake voters. Kejriwal alleges BJP manipulating electoral roll in New Delhi seat, files complaint with EC During the protest, the demonstrators attempted to breach security barricades and move closer to Kejriwal's residence. However, the police used water cannons to disperse the crowd and prevented them from advancing further. According to police officials, more than 20 protesters were detained for protesting without valid permission. They were bundled into police buses and taken to different police stations, a senior police officer said. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said, Arvind Kejriwal has always insulted the Purvanchali community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he made several objectionable statements, and now he has referred to them as 'fake voters'. We will not forget this insult, and neither will the people of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. This betrayal will remain etched in the memory of Delhiites as well. Kejriwal on Thursday accused BJP of manipulating the electoral rolls by registering fake voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in his constituency, New Delhi, ahead of assembly polls. Distribution of money: EC asks poll officer to probe AAP charges against BJPs Verma In a formal complaint to the Election Commission, Kejriwal raised concerns over applications for the addition of 13,000 new voters between December 15 and January 8. Addressing the media after lodging the complaint, Kejriwal said, Apparently many of these voters have been brought in from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other neighbouring states to create fake voter registrations. This manipulation undermines the election process. Kejriwal's remarks sparked an immediate backlash from BJP with party leaders condemning his comments. Elections for the 70-member Delhi assembly are scheduled on February 5. Votes will be counted on February 8.

RANCHI: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren urged Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy to clear the state's coal dues worth Rs 1.36 lakh crore. Reddy assured Soren that the central government would take necessary steps to ensure payment of the outstanding dues, an official release said. A meeting was held among senior officials of the state government, the coal ministry and Coal India Ltd in the presence of Soren and Reddy on Thursday. The Jharkhand government presented a detailed assessment of the outstanding mineral royalty payments to the Union minister in the meeting, the release said. ...The Union coal minister directed that central government officials collaborate with the state government to verify the authenticity of these claims, it stated. Soren said the central and state governments need to move forward together to better manage coal mining, production, transportation, land acquisition and compensation. The CM also said the lands on which mining operations have been completed should be returned to the Jharkhand government. There are many coal projects in the state, where mining work has been completed and the lands have been abandoned by the coal companies. Those are neither being transferred to the state government nor being used properly. Due to this, illegal mining is taking place in the closed mines, Soren said. He also laid emphasis on the need to reduce the damage caused to the environment by mining activities. Soren suggested that coal companies should take initiatives to open permanent training centres, encourage mining tourism and shift the headquarters of Coal India to Jharkhand from West Bengal.

Delhi polls: BJP decides to shun its core agenda Hindutva to return to power after 27 yrs
New Delhi:In its bid to return to power in Delhi after 27 years, the BJP has decided to shun its core agenda -- Hindutva. Instead, the saffron strategists have decided to focus on the development plank and the AAP's corruption. The cautionary shift in the BJP's strategy is a direct response to the backlash faced during the last Assembly polls, when inflammatory speeches like Desh ke gaddaro ko, goli maaro saalo ko (Shoot the traitors) had not only triggered national outrage but also cost the BJP crucial support among Delhi's urban electorate. The BJP leaders have been asked by the party high command to refrain from making any anti-Muslim speeches. The BJP made a transitional shift from its core ideology within months after the crucial Maharashtra and Jharkhand elections, where it used the Hindutva card and riding on it even went on to form the government in Maharashtra. In Delhi, however, the scenario is completely different as it is being fought on issues like broken roads, water, pollution and poor sanitation in the national capital, apart from the AAP's Sheesh Mahal and alleged liquor policy scam. In its bid to give a push to its charge against the AAP of spending lavishly to renovate the chief ministers residence, the BJP has ordered 14 model replicas, one for each district in the national capital. The party plans to set up 70 Sheesh Mahal replicas, one for each of Delhi's Assembly constituencies. Sensing the pulse of Delhi's electorate this time, the BJP chalked out the strategy of targeting the ruling AAP primarily on the corruption and development front. The reason being the Arvind Kejriwal-led party came into power riding high on only these issues and targeting him over the issues will be more beneficial for the BJP than its Hindutva agenda, or so believes the party's strategists. Insiders claimed that the BJP will not repeat the mistakes it made during the 2020 Delhi polls in which its senior leaders, including Union ministers, were allegedly involved in a controversy. In a rally of a senior party leader, slogans like -- Desh ke gaddaro ko, goli maaro saalo ko -- were raised as the 2020 polls were held during the raging citizenship protest and its aftermath resulted in the deaths of over 50 people in the Northeast Delhi riots. The party doesnt want to repeat the same mistake twice and hence is refraining from using religious cards. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is leading the saffron partys charge in the upcoming polls, is banking on corruption as well as the development plank. Mr Modi, who kick-started the BJP's campaign with two events, including a rally in Delhi last week in which, apart from launching development and infrastructure works worth over `16,000 crores, he tore into the AAP and its supremo on corruption issues, particularly over the Sheesh Mahal and liquor scam. Earlier this week, BJP president J.P. Nadda appealed to the Delhi voters to elect a government that will contribute to their progress and make the national capital a developed city.

BRS KTR asks cadre to rise against Congress government in year of agitations
HYDERABAD: BRS working president KT Rama Rao and MLA T Harish Rao on Wednesday called upon the party cadre to fight against the A Revanth Reddy government, which, according to them, is trying to divert the peoples attention from its failure in implementing the elections assurances by foisting false cases against the opponents. Addressing a meeting, after releasing the party diary, at Telangana Bhavan, Rama Rao said that cases were not at all an issue for him and asked the party cadre not to consider them as trouble. When compared with the problems faced by BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao at the time of the launch of the pink party, the present problems are nothing, Rama Rao said. He once again termed the Formula-E race case as lotta peesu (empty) and also described Revanth Reddy as a lotta peesu CM. Stating that 2025 is a Poratala Nama Samvastaram (year of agitations), he called upon the party worker to fight relentlessly against the governments failures. Each worker should be like KCR and continue to fight against the Congress government, he added. The Sircilla MLA said that the Congress leaders were uttering lies in New Delhi, claiming that Telangana government was disbursing `2,500 per month to women. Rama Rao also recalled that when Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren was troubled by the Union government, the people of that state elected his son Hemant Soren as the CM. Harish: Filing cases is the only achievement of govt Harish Rao, meanwhile, said that the party always stood by the cadre, who were troubled by the government. Rama Rao too is like a party worker and the whole party would stand by him, he said. Filing cases against those who question the government is the only achievement of the Revanth Reddy government in the last one year, he alleged. The government failed to fully implement the schemes like crop loan waiver, Rythu Bandhu and Mahalakshmi scheme as well as in providing Rs 4,000 Aasara pensions. The government registered cases against Lagcherla farmers, brought issues like actor Allu Arjuns case, Telangana Talli statue, replaced TS with TG and others to the fore only to divert the attention of the people from its failures, Harish Rao alleged. The former minister said that as part of this tactics, the government registered a false case against Rama Rao in an to stifle the voice of opposition. The graph of Revanth Reddy is falling very fast and thats why he is filing cases against KTR and others, he added.
Maiyan Samman Yojana sparks Jharkhand protests
RANCHI: Hundreds of women are protesting in Jharkhand, angry at receiving an amount much lower than what the Hemant Soren government promised under the flagship Maiyan Samman Yojana. They took to the streets in Dhanbad and Jharia on Wednesday, claiming a transfer of Rs 1,000 to their accounts monthly instead of the revised Rs 2,500. The protest embarrasses the government, which on January 6 claimed to have transferred Rs 11,1415.44 crore under the welfare scheme in the form of direct benefit transfer (DBT) of Rs 2,500 each into 56.62 lakh accounts. The agitated beneficiaries, numbering a few hundred, tried to ransack the Circle Office and tore and burnt banners of the Yojana, asking why they were discriminated against. Rukhsar Parveen says she doesnt know why she is getting less. I filled out the forms initially but have yet to get any of the installments. They are being partial in giving the benefits of this scheme. She complained that those with big buildings have received all four monthly instalments (since the schemes inception), but poor people like us have not received any. Fellow beneficiary Babita Devi, who protested at the Jharia Circle Office, said even though she filled out the form thrice, both online and offline, she received no transfer into her bank account. Disappointed, she is critical of the government. Due to the wrong policies of the state government, women are forced to run from pillar to post to get the benefits of the Yojana. Only a few women are getting the benefits while most women are deprived. Shanti Devi came all the way from Hazaribagh complaining that she received the initial two instalments of Rs 1,000 in her bank account but nothing thereafter. There is no one to explain why I am not getting the benefits despite being eligible for it, she said. Going by their statements, it appears that many women did not receive the increased honorarium of 2500 in the current month, even though they got the original 1,000 in the previous three months. The Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojana is the flagship programme of the Hemant Soren Government, launched last August, under which women aged between 21 and 50 get monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 credited to their bank accounts. The government increased the amount to Rs 2,500 before the Assembly elections. INDIA bloc formed for LS election, says Tejashwi In a bid to give out a strong message to his allies on seat sharing before the Bihar assembly election, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said that the INDIA bloc was only formed for the last Lok Sabha election.
