TPCC meet to discuss census, internal discord
HYDERABAD: With an objective to discuss Congress governments governance, caste census, municipal elections, and internal discord among a few leaders in the constituencies, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) executive committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and several other ministers, MLAs, MPs, MLCs, corporation chairpersons besides AICC Telangana in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi, and other AICC secretaries will participate in the meeting. The timing of the executive committee assumes significance as it is being organised after the conclusion of polling for Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections. This development triggers the speculations of possible appointments of the partys internal committees. The partys rank and file at various levels are unhappy with non-appointment to partys and government nominated posts. In the wake of the Congress nearing completion of its first year in government in the state, the party functionaries are planning to bring pressure on the leadership in the internal fora. During the previous executive committee meeting, the party second-rung leaders complained that the ministers, MLAs, MLCs, and MPs are not accessible to them. With the situation remaining more or less the same, according to sources in the Gandhi Bhavan, the issue is also likely to come up once again. In the light of news reports suggesting non-cooperation of residents for caste survey in the urban areas, the party is likely to direct its cadres to accompany the surveyors and ensure that the exercise goes on without any hindrance.
Palakkad couple on overlanding mission to plant one lakh trees in five years
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If one happens to spot a rugged 4x4 camper somewhere in the remote areas of the country, it must probably be Sangeeth, Kavya and their pet dog Drogo planting the seeds of tomorrows forests. When most people prioritise luxury and leisure, this couple from Palakkad has chosen to overland across India in their modified 4x4 SUV with a mission to plant one lakh trees in five years. Their journey Mission Mother Tree is a project towards sustainability, adventure and making a difference. It started as a simple plan leave a living memory in the form of trees across places they visit. It quickly became a full-scale drive. They left the security of their corporate jobs to pursue a life closer to nature. Sangeeth, who was previously a sales and marketing officer, and Kavya, a professional in dairy technology now pursuing research, packed up their lives, outfitted their vehicle and set off on a path that would take them to some of Indias most remote regions. Their goal is to explore responsibly and give back to the earth. Over the past two years, we have covered 45,000 kilometres across the country. Our travels arent just the thrill of overlanding but driven by a sense of purpose. We have successfully planted over 10,000 native saplings across the remote regions of India, with the help of a growing community of 4,000 volunteers who joined through social media and the acquaintances between travels, Sangeeth told TNIE. Their Instagram page lifeonroads_ is where they document their journey, and it has crossed over 2.4 lakh followers. To keep their journey sustainable and affordable, Sangeeth and Kavya transformed their Force Gurkha SUV into a camper, all for just Rs 20,000. All the work on the camper was completed by their IT friends group. The couple prepare their meals on the road, sharing their experiences with their companion, Drogo, who is as much a part of the adventure as they are. The couple relies on locally sourced seed balls, which they gather with the help of volunteers from the areas they visit. This ensures that the plants are suited to the local soil and climate, increasing the chances of survival. Their saplings span ten varieties of native trees, and they have achieved a 60% survival rate. For Kavya, the journey is about creating something lasting. One lakh trees may seem like a drop in the bucket against climate change, but were doing the best we can to build a community that values life on this planet, Kavya said. Not only do they plant these saplings but also keep track of their growth through an application, Tree Tag. Each sapling they plant is tagged and tracked using GPS coordinates via the app Tree Tag. Like a live report card, volunteers across the country too regularly update the couple on the progress of these plants. We note down the GPS coordinates of each tree we plant and track it through Tree Tag. It is a collective effort that wouldnt have been possible without the support of the people, Sangeeth said. In Kerala alone, they have planted around 300 saplings in Palakkad, 220 in Munnar, and 70 in Ernakulam. And each time they return to their home base, they plant a batch of seed balls nearby to keep a part of their mission close to home. They have travelled to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. They deviate to remote areas and camp there.Planning this mission often takes more time than the execution, Kavya said.

Maharashtra assembly polls: 'Dismal record' of metropolitan voters continues, say EC
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Wednesday lamented that despite a range of measures taken by it for ease of voting besides motivational campaigns, urban voters in Maharashtra continued their dismal record of low participation in cities including Mumbai, Pune and Thane. Polling for assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand concluded on Wednesday with the former recording 58.22 per cent voter turnout as of 5 PM and the latter 67.59 per cent, surpassing the 67.04 per cent voting in the corresponding assembly seats in 2019. Maharashtra with 58.22 per cent polling is likely to cross the 2019 figures as voting still underway in the state, EC said. While Maharashtra had assembly polls in a single phase, Jharkhand had polls in two phases. The poll watchdog said special emphasis was placed on combating urban apathy owing to the trend of low voter turnout witnessed in urban centres in Maharashtra in past state and parliamentary elections. More than 1,185 polling stations were set up in high rise buildings and societies and various awareness and mass mobilisation campaigns were organised ahead of the polls involving film celebrities, EC's state and national icons, to nudge urban and young voters. Urban apathy is a phenomenon where voters in urban areas, especially youths, prefer to stay at home and do not turn up at polling stations on voting day. All-party meeting on Nov 24 ahead of Parliament session
NEW DELHI: The Centre has called an all-party meeting on November 24, a day before the winter session of Parliament commences, to seek cooperation of opposition parties for the smooth functioning of the session that will last till December 20. The government wants to foster a collaborative environment and address any concern raised by political parties, both ruling and opposition. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday announced the all-party meeting which is anticipated to be stormy. A wide range of critical issues such as legislative priorities, national security, economic concerns, and regional matters, besides Manipur violence are going to be discussed. In keeping with the parliamentary tradition, the meeting is convened to inform the Opposition of its legislative agenda as well as discuss issues which parties want to debate in Parliament. Through such a meeting, the government formally seeks cooperation of opposition parties in both Houses during the session. Sources indicated that leaders of all parties with representation in Parliament are likely to attend the meeting to present their views and discuss strategies for efficient parliamentary proceedings. The agenda will include discussions on setting priorities for the winter session and preparing for debates on potentially contentious issues. However, similar to previous meetings, full participation from opposition parties seems unlikely, especially from those protesting the governments handling of the ongoing violence in Manipur. Opposition parties attending the meeting are expected to raise demands for adequate time to present their concerns in the Houses. They are also likely to critique the Central governments approach to addressing the violence and unrest in Manipur. The ethnic clashes in Manipur, going on for several months, remain a contentious issue that is expected to dominate talks. The opposition may also protest against the possibility of the government moving forward with one nation one election proposal. The Congress has rejected the idea of implementing One Nation One Election, saying that the PM has to take everyone in Parliament into confidence for this issue. The session, scheduled to span a month, is set to include the introduction of new bills and deliberations on pending legislation. The government hopes that the APM will create a foundation for a more productive session, despite prevailing political tensions. The meeting is also likely to discuss an event planned to be held on November 26 marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan (the old Parliament building). Samvidhan Sadan The all-party meeting is likely to discuss an event planned to be held on November 26 marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of Constitution in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The results of assembly polls in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, which will be announced on November 23, are also likely to be discussed in both the Houses.
