Bihar soldier Rambabu Singh laid to rest with honours, village pays tribute to fallen hero
PATNA: Residents of Basilpur village in Bihars Siwan district on Wednesday bid adieu to a soldier, Rambabu Singh who died early on Tuesday morning after receiving fatal injuries during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir late on May 12. They felt pride over the supreme sacrifice made by son of the soil for the sake of the nations sovereignty. We are proud of our son of the soil for his supreme sacrifice for the sake of the nations sovereignty. His sacrifice will never go in vain. He laid down his life for the sake of Bharat Mata. The entire village is proud of him, Ganesh Prasad Singh, a resident of Basilpur village, told this reporter over the phone soon after the body of Rambabu arrived on Wednesday afternoon. The shocking news, however, came barely five months after Rambabus marriage. Rambabu (28) married Kumari Anajali Singh, a resident of Dhanbad in neighbouring Jharkhand, on December 14, 2024. Anjali is now carrying a pregnancy of about four months. She rushed to her in-laws house in Siwan after hearing the shocking news. Anjali said that she had her last conversation with her husband over phone at around 10 am on May 12. He promised to call me again in the evening as he was getting late for his duty. Thereafter, I got engaged in routine work. In the evening, I was eagerly waiting for his call. I rushed to the mobile phone when it rang up, she said. But it was not her husbands call. A man on the other side wanted to get details about her husband. As I am educated, I suspected the man on the other side to be a cyber fraud trying to collect details about my husband. I disconnected the phone call before the man on the other side could know more about him, she recalled with tears rolling down her cheeks. It was, in fact, a call from the Indian Army headquarters that later informed Rambabus elder brother, Akhilesh Singh, a loco pilot in Dhanbad. Rambabus father-in-law, Subhash Chandra Singh, said he had visited his native village in Siwan in April. He was recently transferred to Jodhpur from Jammu and Kashmir, where he was posted as an operator in the S-400 air defence system. But he could not join his new place of posting due to heightened tension between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror incident. I hope the government will take care of my daughters well-being and provide her a government job, apart from the compensation, he said, adding that he was proud of his son-in-laws sacrifice. Rambabus uncle Nishikant, said, Rambabu was eager to join the Indian Army from his childhood, and he worked hard to fulfil his dream. He had joined the Indian Army in 2018. His father Ram Vichar Prasad, a former panchayat up-pramukh, died about two years back. The mortal remains of the soldier were consigned to flames at the village ghat with full state honours. Slogans like Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Shaheed Rambabu Amar Rahe rent the air. A large number of people, including senior officials of the Siwan district administration, took part in the funeral procession. Earlier, the leader of the opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav visited Patna airport and paid floral tributes to the departed soldier. A BSF sub-inspector, Mohammad Imtiyaz, a native of Saran district, laid down his life during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Can't Beat the Classics: Ghazal vocalist Koyel Mukherjee opens up
Bengaluru as a city is known for its incessant preoccupation with speed and innovation. For decades, especially following the tech boom, Indias IT capital has prided itself for its the future is now attitude, which has since proliferated across industries beyond. It is to be noted however, that the citys patronage towards the arts sees better days than most of its metropolitan counterparts, extending its warmth to organic forms like jazz and Carnatic (almost) as conspicuously as to a form like techno, which seems more up its alley. Led by vocalist Koyel Mukherjee, three-member band Ruh_Voyage, who just performed at Medai, Koramangala, is one of many such acts in the city that try to eke out loyal and appreciative listenerships. With an ever-evolving musical landscape which has pushed craft towards marketability, especially since the dawn of streaming, it has become increasingly rare to come across musicians and listeners who still seek classical roots. For Mukherjee, her inspiration has familial origins. I was very young when I started loving ghazals, because my family loved Hindustani classical music. Ghazals are beautiful as well as difficult; I slowly started enjoying them, she says, continuing, When I was in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa , I met Ghulam Ali sahab, and he guided me. Although her stint at Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in the 2007 season was pivotal in Mukherjees career, the journey has been far from easy. Beneath her craft and presence in the music circuit of a metropolis like Bengaluru, lies the story of a girl from a small town Dhanbad in Jharkhand who had to earn her bread. As she reveals, I was in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2007, where I was placed in Bappi Lahiris gharana. The journey was not easy for me afterwards, especially as a woman from a small town. I continued but I was doing shows mostly in the USA. Despite Bengaluru still having a relatively better field in terms of patronage towards classical music, according to Mukherjee, the audience is untrained. This is somewhat unsurprising, given the median age for the citys live music audience, and its shifting palate. Bengaluru has a narrow understanding of ghazals; the attendees mostly enjoy Bollywood ghazals. Language is definitely a barrier. With shayari and ghazals, I have to explain with a lot of conviction to give them a contextual sense of the ambience of the evening. Response has been good and its getting better, but there is still a long way to go, she rues. Mukherjee leaves room for hardly anything besides praise about the rest of the band percussionist Shreyash Vishwaroop and pianist Rishabh Chauhan. As she says, We take up instruments according to demand, but Shreyash and Rishabh are constants. They are like my brothers; chemistry is vital when one is executing ghazals. We speak and learn through music, making playing live a divine experience.
Sandeep Shikhar is a familiar name to most involved or interested in theatre. With a career spanning across three decades as actor, playwright, and director acting across various films and web series like Panchayat , Jaadugar , Home Shanti and Azaad Shikhar is also the co-founder of city-based theatre group Indian Ensemble. His latest contribution is directorial, with his play Deluxe Haircutting Salon . Shikhars inspiration for the play stems from his own experiences, drawing parallels between Bachchan, the protagonist and owner of the titular salon, and the life he has lived. As Bachchan dreams of becoming a lawyer, Shikhar brings along characters from his neighbourhood to court, unveiling their stories for justice. The characters and their backstories have been inspired by people I know, having grown up on a street named Gyan Mukherjee Road in Dhanbad, surrounded by the lawyers colony my entire childhood there left a huge impression on me, Shikhar reveals. The themes the play deals with are identity, aspiration, and the clash between modernity and tradition. Through the play, Shikhar dives into the complexities of human relationships in a small-town setting, as the protagonist navigates through the daily phenomena of a mundane life and often finds himself in a world different from reality. The play examines a very basic premise of a fundamentally aspirational society, which at the moment is in a race to become better, stronger and wealthier. I am also trying to explore the possibilities of empowering the common man and the price that others would pay if the pardon is not granted, he notes. Sandeep Shikhar, director Shikhars approach to the craft has always been rooted in collaboration; as he states, I dont believe in being a dictator, I work with the team and encourage them to come up with their own interpretations of the character. Having worked with different media like films, theatre and series, Shikhar picks theatre as his favourite. Being a theatre actor helps to get into a character, but the skill of portraying the character in films requires different skillsets from theatre. After working in a few films and web series, and spending so much time on sets, I think I have adapted to the cinematic medium quite a bit, but I am still working on myself to get the best out of myself, he stresses. Shikhar also notes how, for him, the process of writing is different for each medium. Writing is lonely work. Acting, a group work. When I write a play, I can see my characters on stage. In theatre, we get time to rehearse, to know about the story, the characters. In films, it is the opposite, Shikhar explains, further adding, Theatre acting is like cooking traditional biryani. Film acting is like fast food. One has to be efficient in both. Ahead of his play, which he deems to be a promising exploration of human condition, Shikhar hopes the audience to leave reflecting on their own lives and relationships. As he aptly puts it, The quirks and concerns of the plays small town characters will resonate with the audience completely. (The play will be staged today and tomorrow, 3.30pm and 7.30pm, at Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield. Tickets are at 400)

Jharkhand HC raps CBI over delay in trials of MPs, MLAs
RANCHI: Expressing concern over the prolonged delays in the hearing of criminal cases registered against Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the state, the Jharkhand High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report. During the proceedings, the Court also observed that the CBI does not appear to be serious about the timely disposal of pending cases involving public representatives. The case will be heard next on June 17. The hearing was held on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed on the basis of suo motu cognizance taken by the High Court regarding the speedy trial of cases filed against MPs and MLAs. Amicus Curiae Advocate Manoj Tandon pointed out that the current situation suggests it could take many years to complete the trials. In many criminal cases related to MPs and MLAs, it takes five to six years to frame charges even after the chargesheet has been filed by the CBI, indicating a lack of intent on the agencys part to complete the trial expeditiously. My concern is that there has been a delay in the hearing of the cases related to MPs and MLAs, and there should be a speedy trial, said Amicus Curiae Advocate Manoj Tandon. He further stated that the CBI, despite being a premier investigative agency, has been unsuccessful in ensuring the timely appearance of witnesses and in expediting the trial process. The CBI, however, informed the Court that it would study the order sheets of these cases and provide an explanation regarding the causes of the delay in completing the trials. We have taken two weeks time to verify the cases, find out the reasons behind the delay, and submit a detailed report on June 17, said CBI advocate Prashant Pallav. As per the current status, 12 criminal cases involving MPs and MLAs are pending in Jharkhandnine in the Ranchi Civil Court and three in the Dhanbad Court.

ED requests special court to not post IAS Pooja Singhal in departments under Jharkhand government
RANCHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has requested the Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court to ensure that senior IAS officer and former Mines Secretary Pooja Singhal is not posted in any department under the state government. The ED claimed that if Singhal is given responsibility of any department in the state government, she may misuse her position and influence the ongoing case against her. Earlier on January 29, the PMLA court had sought approval from the Jharkhand government to prosecute her in a money laundering case linked to the siphoning of MNREGA funds during her tenure as Deputy Commissioner in Khunti. A 2000-batch IAS officer, Singhal was arrested for allegedly embezzling crores of MGNREGA funds in Khunti. Singhal, after remaining in jail for 28 months, was granted bail by a Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Ranchi on December 7, 2024. Following her release on bail, the state government revoked her suspension and reinstated her with effect from December 7, 2024. She has since rejoined the Department of Personnel and is awaiting a new posting. However, the petition issued by the ED raises suspicion over the reinstatement of Singhal in the same department. Meanwhile, a reply from Pooja Singhal has already been filed in this regard and the court will be hearing the case next on February 14. Before her arrest, ED had conducted raids at several locations in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged embezzlement of over Rs 18 crore MGNREGA funds in Khunti district during 2008-2011. The raids were conducted at a total of 18 locations including Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, NCR as well as Ranchi, Khunti and Dhanbad in Jharkhand. Singhal, as Chatra Deputy Commissioner, had also been accused of paying Rs 6 crore in advance to the two NGOs Welfare Point and Prerna Niketan for musli farming, which, actually was never done. In addition to that, while being Deputy Commissioner in Palamu, she was charged of transferring 83 acres of forest land to a private company for mining, a matter which is related to Kathautia Coal Mines. According ED, Rs 1.43 crore more than the known sources of her income were recovered from the bank accounts of Pooja Singhal while she was Deputy Commissioner in Khunti, Palamu and Chatra. The ED also claimed that Singhal purchased as many as 13 insurance policies by paying a premium of Rs 80.81 lakh and closed them before the completion of their tenure and got Rs 84.64 lakh against it. The ED also informed that Singhal transferred Rs 16.57 lakh to the three bank accounts related to CA Suman Kumar. The ED is said to have gathered sufficient primary evidence to suggest that she is in close connection with CA Sunman Kumar and had financial transactions with him. Centre-state panel to calculate actual amount of outstanding dues to Jharkhand
RANCHI: State Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore on Friday met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Coal Minister Kishan Reddy over the payment of outstanding dues to Jharkhand. He handed them a written memorandum demanding the outstanding dues of Rs 1,36000 crore related to the coal mining sector. He also urged for payment of the outstanding dues as soon as possible. The Union Coal Minister has asked the officials to form a panel to calculate the exact amount of dues to Jharkhand so that positive steps could be taken to clear it as soon as possible. The Union Coal Minister directed Additional Secretary of Coal Ministry, Smita Pradhan to form a team of officials from the Union Coal Ministry and Ministry of Mines and Geology under the Government of Jharkhand as soon as possible, Radhakrishna Kishore said. The Coal Minister Kishan Reddy had assured that the amount belongs to Jharkhand and the actual dues would be calculated with practicality and provided to the state, he added. Earlier, Chief Minister Hemant Soren while addressing the gathering on JMMs 53rd Foundation Day in Dhanbad on Tuesday had given a strict warning to the Central Public Sector Undertakings to pay the outstanding dues of Rs 1.36 lakh crore. Soren said that a letter has been written to demand the dues and legal ways will also be adopted to protect the rights of the people of Jharkhand. He expressed that they will not hesitate to close the coal mines if outstanding dues are not paid. BJP on the other hand, reaffirming its commitment to ensure that Jharkhand receives its rightful dues, it questioned the origin of the figure of Rs 1.36 lakh crore repeatedly cited by the Chief Minister and JMM. State BJP Spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo pointed out that the state government has included approximately Rs 60,000 crore of interest as part of the compensation amount, even though the Supreme Court had prohibited state governments from claiming interest on outstanding dues. Shahdeo emphasised that according to the judgment, states will receive their outstanding dues in 12 instalments over 12 years. He cited Point 27.2 of the Supreme Court order, which specifies that the instalment payments will begin on April 1, 2026, and continue until April 1, 2037. He further referred to Point 27.3 of the same judgment, which explicitly states that no interest or penalty will be imposed before July 25, 2024. According to Pratul, the Chief Minister had made several populist promises during the elections, requiring an estimated expenditure of over Rs 2.5 lakh crore in the next five years. Since the state lacks internal resources to generate this revenue, schemes like Maiyaan Samman Yojana --which initially promised benefits to all eligible women -- have now been modified to include eligibility criteria. The Chief Minister is aware that he cannot fulfil these election promises and is therefore fabricating a misleading narrative about the Rs1.36 lakh crore allegedly owed by the Centre, said Shahdeo. This is nothing but an attempt to deceive the people of Jharkhand. According to government sources, out of the total amount of Rs 1, 36, 000 crore, Rs 1, 01, 142 crore is due as land compensation, Rs 32,000 crore under Common Cause and Rs 2500 crore are due as coal royalty. he added. Notably, Jharkhand gets the highest royalty of about Rs 5500 crore from coal. About Rs 3200 crore royalties is obtained from iron ore with the remaining royalty is received from gold, uranium, stone, limestone, copper and other minerals.
Jharkhand to reclaim closed coal mines: CM Hemant Soren on JMMs 53rd foundation day
RANCHI: Chief Minister Hemant Soren, while addressing a gathering at Dhanbad on the occasion of the 53rd foundation day of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Monday, announced that the state will take control of all closed coal mines in the state to promote regional development. During his speech, Soren strongly criticized the central government for handing over closed coal mines to private entities, asserting that Jharkhand would not allow this at any cost. He emphasized that water, land, and forests in the state belong to the people of Jharkhand and vowed to reclaim closed coal mines where mining operations have already been concluded. If required, he said, the government will introduce new laws to regain control over these lands. The chief minister also said that there are a lot of coal mines that had ceased mining operations but, had still not returned to the state. He further said that Jharkhand's progress depends on the development of its villages, and the well-being of villagers is crucial for the state's growth. To empower women and promote self-reliance, the state government has launched several welfare schemes, including the Maiyya Samman Yojana. According to Soren, Maiyya Samman Yojana, scheme has become a model for other states. He noted that the BJP had included it in its campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections, and similar announcements were being made in Bihar. Expressing disappointment with the Union Budget, Soren said that the state had high expectations but received nothing. He accused that central government for neglecting the state's financial needs. The central government does not talk about grants to states but instead imposes and increases taxes, he said. Earlier on Sunday during foundation day programme in Dumka, the JMM passed 50-point resolution demanding Chief Minister Hemant Soren to reject of CAA, UCC and NRC in Jharkhand. Besides demanding the rejection of CAA, UCC and NRC from Jharkhand , the proposal also demanded strict implementation of the Santhal Pargana Tenancy (SPT) Act and Chotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) Act. Additionally, it urged the establishment of a High Court Bench in Dumka under Section 25(3) of the Bihar State Reorganisation Bill 2000. Notably, this was the first time that JMM observed its foundation day during the daytime in Dhanbad. Since its formation in 1973, by Shibu Soren, Binod Bihari Mahto, and A.K. Roy, the foundation day was traditionally observed during the night, except during the COVID-19 period.

Singhal, who was in jail for the last 28 months in a money laundering case linked to the MGNREGA scam, was granted bail by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Ranchi in December last year. The PIL was filed by Arun Kumar Dubey. While hearing the PIL initiated from a suo-moto cognizance regarding the investigation of the role of the then Khunti Deputy Commissioner Pooja Singhal in the MNREGA scam, the court closed the case after disposing it. The court observed that now there is no issue left in it as the police and ACB have investigated the matter and filed the charge sheet against the accused in the case, therefore closed the PIL, said Advocate appearing on behalf of the state government, Piyush Chitresh. Notably, there was an allegation of financial irregularities of more than Rs 200 crore against Singhal in MNREGA schemes during her tenure as Deputy Commissioner of Khunti. Sixteen FIRs were registered in various police stations of Khunti district in this regard. Later, the investigation was taken from Khunti Police and handed over to State Anti-Corruption Bureau. The petitioner, in his PIL, had alleged that the entire matter was being investigated by ACB, but the role of Singhal was not investigated, despite the fact that cheques were signed by the Deputy Commissioner only. A request was made to get her role investigated by ED. It is noteworthy that the applicant had filed a PIL demanding an investigation into the role of the then Deputy Commissioner of Khunti, Pooja Singhal. Earlier, the ED, after interrogation for over 15 hours, had arrested the then mining secretary Pooja Singhal on May 11, 2022, in a money laundering case linked to alleged embezzlement of MGNREGA funds and other charges. Before her arrest, ED had conducted raids at several locations, including that of Pooja Singhal, in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged embezzlement of over Rs 18 crore MGNREGA funds in Khunti district during 2008-2011. Vande Bharats 1st female loco pilot gets R-Day invite
RANCHI: Ritika Tirkey, the first female tribal assistant loco pilot of the Vande Bharat Express, was left speechless when she opened her door to a team of Post Office officials who had come to deliver an invitation for the At Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan. According to 27-year-old Tirkey, she had never thought in her wildest dreams that the President would ever invite her as a loco pilot. When she received an e-mail, she thought it to be fake, but a formal invitation from the Rashtrapti Bhawan left her dumbfounded. The invite was delivered to Ritikas residence at Jugsalai in Jamshedpur by the postman under the supervision of Assistant Postal Superintendent (West) Parikshit Seth. Initially, when I received the e-mail, I thought it to be fake, but when a team from the Post Office knocked on my door, it overwhelmed me, said Tirkey. It is an honour that a tribal girl from a simple family has got this unique opportunity, she added. This honour comes as recognition of her outstanding achievements in a male-dominated field, where she has broken barriers to carve a path for women in the Indian Railways. The Rashtrapati Bhawan has invited me as a woman achiever and I believe that every woman should be independent. I think women have been working in almost every field, and where they have not, will reach very soon, said Tirkey. No work is small in this world; the only pre-condition is that it should be done with complete dedication, and then success is bound to follow, she added. According to Tirkey, her first achievement was being the co-pilot when Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Vande Bharat train on September 15, 2024, and now, attending the Presidents At Home Reception, would be her second achievement. Ritika, who works as the assistant loco pilot of the Vande Bharat Express operating between Tatanagar and Patna, is not only the first tribal woman to take on this prestigious role but also a source of immense pride for her family and the women across the state. Hailing from a humble family in Jharkhand, Tirkey completed her schooling in Ranchi before pursuing a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from BIT Mesra. Her father is a retired forest guard. Tirkeys career with the railways started in Chandrapura, Bokaro, under the Dhanbad Rail Division, before being transferred to Tatanagar in 2021. It was there that she received her promotion, propelling her to new heights in her career. She quickly advanced, operating freight trains and passenger services, before being promoted to Assistant Loco Pilot. Her promotion in 2024 enabled her to participate in the operation of the Vande Bharat Express, where she now serves as a vital crew member. The Vande Bharat Express, a state-of-the-art train, is one of Prime Minister Narendra Modis dream projects. Ritikas journey with the Indian Railways began in 2019 when she joined as a shunter in the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway.
