Benefits never reached poor under RJD-Congress rule, alleges PM Modi at Bihar rally
PATNA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged people to save Bihar from the ad intentions of the RJD and Congress, accusing both parties of doing politics in the name of the poor, backwards, Dalits and Adivasis over the years. What to speak of giving equal rights to the poor, backwards, Dalits and Adivasis, they cannot give even respect to the people outside their families, Modi commented in a public rally in Bihar Motihari, while obliquely targeting RJD chief Lalu Prasad after a portrait of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar was placed near his feet by one of his supporters during his birthday celebrations. Avoiding responding to the allegations being made by RJD and its allies about the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the election rolls in Bihar, Modi said that RJD had put the brakes on the development of Bihar as even benefits were not reaching the poor when RJD and Congress were in power. He said that UPA released only around Rs 2 lakh crore when it was in power at the centre as it was taking revenge against Bihars NDA government headed by Nitish Kumar and the state itself. PM said, I stopped this old politics as the central assistance to Bihar increased manifold after the formation of the NDA government at the Centre in 2014. PM Modi said that NDA government at the centre provided more funds to Bihar for its development than that of the previous UPA government led by Congress. He also listed mis-governance during the previous RJD-Congress government in the state. We (NDA) have provided pucca houses to people in Bihar more than population of Norway, Singapore and New Zealand, he pointed out. Highlighting the achievements of the NDA government, PM Modi said that tremendous results have been coming out of women empowerment as over 20 lakh women have become lakhpati Didis in Bihar alone. He lauded by efforts made by Nitish Kumar for women empowerment through Jeevika Didis and their self-help groups. PM Modi said that Bihar had to be made a developed state if the eastern India had to be taken forward on the path of growth. Today, development work is happening in Bihar so fast because there is a government working for Bihar at the centre and in the state, he remarked. Our resolve is that in the coming times, Motihari should be known in the east just like Mumbai is in western India. Just like there are opportunities in Gurugram, Gaya should also have similar opportunities. Like Pune, there should be industrial development in Patna. Like Surat, Santhal Pargana should also develop. Like Jaipur, new records of tourism should be made in Jalpaiguri and Jajpur. Like Bangalore, the people of Birbhum should also progress, he added. PM Modi thanked Nitish for taking initiatives for the welfare of youths. Nitish Kumars government is giving jobs to youths in support of the Centre, he said, adding that Mudra Loan scheme was being strengthened to provide loans to make youths self-reliant. PM Modis visit to Motihari, district headquarters of East Champaran, is the 53rd tour to Bihar since 2014 and third in one and a half months. Earlier, PM Modi laid foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth over Rs.7,200 crore.

Surat teen dies by suicide after harassment by minor; incident sparks community tension
AHMEDABAD: In a case from Surats Katargam area, a 19-year-old tuition teacher, Nenu Vavadia, died by suicide after alleged sustained harassment, threats, and extortion by a minor boy and his father. The incident, which unfolded on the evening of July 16, has now spiralled into a two-community flashpoint, pitting two prominent groups against each other, with police arrests, political demands, and social media firestorms intensifying the fallout. According to the FIR lodged on Tuesday, the victims father alleged that a minor boy who used to drop his niece at the tuition class where Nenu taught, began stalking and harassing her. The complaint states the minor allegedly pressured her repeatedly to enter into a relationship, abused her over the phone, and even demanded a ransom of Rs 30,000. When the girl's father confronted the boys father, he allegedly sided with his son, verbally abused Nenus father, and failed to intervene. On Wednesday, Singanpore police detained the minor and arrested his father, both of whom have been booked under charges related to abetment of suicide, extortion, and harassment. The father was produced before court and remanded to one-day custody, while the minor remains under questioning. Preliminary investigations reveal that the boy had allegedly been persistently following Nenu to and from her tuition classes, using vulgar language and threats to mentally torture her. In a statement to the local media, Nenus father said, My daughter was abused and threatened repeatedly. Despite informing the boys father, he supported his son and even abused me. My daughter was so mentally tortured that she saw no way out but to end her life. As the police tightened their case, the incident ignited sharp tension between two communities. The accused father and son belong to Gujarats influential Rabari (cattle rearers) community, while the deceased girl is from the Patidar community. Social media platforms exploded with viral messages and chat screenshots allegedly exchanged between the victim and the accused. While some groups are portraying the messages to defend the accused, others led by the girls father have circulated counter messages demanding strict legal action. Amid mounting tensions, the Patidar community publicly urged the Chief Minister of Gujarat to ensure an impartial probe. Patidar leader Mathur Savani said, Weve written to the Chief Minister, demanding action against the police for any negligence and seeking justice for a young girl who took her life due to unchecked social harassment, he said. As the investigation deepens, what began as a tragic suicide has now turned into a case entwined with harassment, alleged extortion, community fault lines, and demands for administrative accountability. Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders bid to boost shipbuilding capabilities; 10 acres to be reclaimed
Indias shipbuilding capabilities, having strategic effect, are up for a boost, state-owned Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) planning to reclaim a huge chunk of land close to the main complex in Mumbai. Confirming the development, a senior official of the dockyard said, In addition to the 15 acres of land acquired earlier by us in MDLs neighborhood, we plan to reclaim 10 acres more. and, this will be in line with consistent efforts being made to strengthen the shipbuilding capabilities of the country, said the officer. Reclamation is the process of creating land by transforming water bodies. There is a planned investment between Rs 40005000 crore aimed at sprucing up the infrastructure, and it will include establishing two more basins, the officer added. The last major infrastructure added to MDL was the Kanhoji Angre wet basin, capable of berthing two frigates and two submarines for outfitting. Going by the significance of the strategic outcomes of the indigenous shipbuilding, it will fructify into significant capability development, once complimented with further accrual of the shipbuilding capability enhancement of other shipyards. This is to match the Chinese shipbuilding capability, which has made the Chinese PLA Navy operating the worlds fleet of over 370 ships, surpassing that of the US. Meanwhile, the MDL is augmenting an overall increase in the throughput. A land parcel of approx. 15 acres was acquired on 29 Years Lease Term from Mumbai Port Authority (MPA), wef 01.04.2024, in order to decongest the existing Shipyard space. This land parcel is adjacent to the MDL perimeter on the southern side. The total cost of acquisition is approximately Rs 354 crore. As per the Ministry of Defence, this 15 acre would be developed for simultaneous construction and outfitting of new builds & repairs/refits of various types of vessels. The new infrastructure will give adequate bandwidth to the shipyard for simultaneous execution of various projects. Another 37 acres at the Nhava Sheva Port was acquired at the cost of approx. Rs 3,000 cr. These two areas, the official said, would be making MDL future-proof with respect to the infrastructure constraints. At present, the Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) is 40 kilotonnes (40,000 metric tons). With the Infrastructure as planned in MDLs neighbourhood once raised, it will go up to 80 DWT. Once Nhava Shipyard starts, then we oversee a total of 200,000 DWT., the sources added. DWT is the maximum weight a ship can carry. At present, MDL has a capacity to construct 11 submarines and 10 warships simultaneously at the existing premises. The future construction requirements are expected to be commensurate with the future platforms, which are likely to be larger in dimensions with a deeper draft. The MDL is expected to ink twin submarine building projects, The New Indian Express reported earlier, estimated to cost over Rs 1.06 lakh crore, involving the Project 75-India and an add-on project which the MDL completed in January this year. These projects are expected to boost Indian Navy's underwater combat capabilities, indigenously. Mazagon Dockyard to finalise two submarine projects this financial year A total of 61 warships and submarines are being constructed in India, another tranche of allocation, again for indigenous construction of 17 warships and 9 submarines, is awaited go-ahead in near future. ( For details, read TNIE s July 7 edition .) Going by the Indian Navys plans to be a 175 capital ship navy and taking the geopolitical situation into account, MDL, along with the other defence and private shipyards, is expected to play a significant role. India's strategic defence shipbuilder Mazagon Dockyard has planned a major infrastructure up-gradation. The two investments will give a cumulative up-gradation from the current ship tonnage construction weight to around 200,000 tonnes. The current capacity of the MDL is simultaneous construction of 11 submarines and 10 larger warships of the level of near 150 meters long destroyers. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is celebrating its 250th Foundation Day on May 14, 2024. The Mazagon Dockyard was established in 1774 and the Government of India took it over in 1960. So far, 806 vessels have been constructed, with 214 platforms constructed for other countries. It also includes 31 Capital Warships, 8 Submarines manufactured for the Indian Navy.
Arti Bagdy showcases 45 fashion labels in Chennai
Sequins caught the light, colours shimmered and conversed, and jewellery gleamed at Hyatt Regency, on July 9 and 10. Every stall at the premise held bold reimaginings of tradition from mirror-laden fabrics of Gujarat to the intricate gota patti of Rajasthan, corset blouses paired over saris and pleated trousers paired with embroidered jackets. The collections unfurled 45 Indian designers sartorial excellence. Showcasing them was Arti Bagdys Fashion Collezione (ABFC), a platform that has become synonymous with curated luxury in Chennai. This year marked a milestone 23 years since Arti Bagdy began championing high fashion, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance through her showcases. The unique selling point for ABFCs exhibitions, Arti Bagdy believes, has been bringing luxury labels from outside the city and from the many corners of the country, for the buyers here to shop from. Talking about the collections, Arti declares that it was a choice to keep the theme festive. Festivities will soon begin, in the next two to three months, and the wedding season is also upcoming. Fresh embellished festive wear collections, from embroideries to pearl and mirror work, were therefore showcased this time, she says. Vrinda by Pundrik Dubey from Delhi, Virachi Couture, Kanika @35C, Neha Modi, and Wafe from Kolkata, Raisa by Srishti and Priyas, and Kiaayo, were among the labels presenting their festive collections this year. Fine jewellery, meanwhile, was showcased by PC Totuka and Sons from Jaipur, Pradeep Poddar Jewellers from Kolkata, and IVAIRA lab-grown diamonds; and destination jewellery was brought by Esme Crystals from Mumbai, PRARA 925 Silver Jewels from Surat, and Just Love Fine Jewellery from Mumbai, among others. The labels, year on year, are a mix of well established designers and up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the field of fashion and jewellery, Arti informs. Amid all the festive dazzle, a quiet rebellion also took place in the soft rustle of handspun cotton clothes. At the end of the day, we need sustainable cotton wear too. It is ideal for those who wouldnt necessarily be shopping for festivities, and it also makes the exhibition a shopping experience for everyone, Arti reasons. Such lightweight, breathable silhouettes were showcased by Peela Dhaga by Reshmi from Jaipur, Aarni from Hyderabad, and Cute Cottons from Bengaluru, and more. For many of the designers at the exhibition, this wasnt their first time partnering with ABFC. Reshmi from Peela Dhaga told CE , This is my second consecutive year of showcasing Peela Dhaga with ABFC. I put up my stall last year too. I wanted to come again this year because of the kind of footfall we had in 2024. It was brilliant. For Arti, success isnt measured in footfall alone. Two decades ago, convincing luxury brands to showcase in Chennai was a challenge. Today, designers and young fashion entrepreneurs eagerly pitch their collections, hoping to be featured in her collezione. That shift, she says with quiet pride, is her biggest win.
Mortal remains of Flt Lt Rishi Raj Singh, who died in Jaguar crash, consigned to flames in Pali
The mortal remains of Flight Lieutenant Rishi Raj Singh, who died in a crash of a Jaguar fighter plane during a routine sortie near Churu in Rajasthan, were consigned to flames at his ancestral village in the state's Pali district on Thursday evening amid full military honours and slogans. Twenty-three-year-old Singh was one of the two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots who were killed in the crash on Wednesday. He was flying with Squadron Leader Lokendra Singh Sindhu, who hailed from Kheri Sadh village in Haryana's Rohtak. Singh's mortal remains first reached Jodhpur Air Force station from Suratgarh on Thursday afternoon. Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat offered floral tributes at the Air Force station. From Jodhpur, the mortal remains were taken to Sirohi by a helicopter and then to his village by road, where the entire Khivandi village including family members, relatives, Air Force officers and administrative officials gathered in solemn grief to receive him for the final rites. For the inconsolable mother and father, it was hard to believe their eyes that the son, for whom they had been searching a suitable match and dreaming of seeing him on horseback in his 'barat' (wedding procession), now lay motionless on the pyre amid the flames. Those present called it the most cruel joke of the Almighty. As the news of Singh's martyrdom spread, relatives and villagers began assembling at his village house from Wednesday to console the parents, who are yet to come to terms with the rudest shock. He was the pride of our family. With his career firmly in place, we had begun preparing for the next chapter of his life, hoping to see him married within a year or two. But now, everything has come to an end, said his uncle Hitpal Singh. Holding age-old fighter planes responsible for the loss of pilots, he questioned why such old machines are being allowed to be operated at the cost of Indian pilots. He termed the loss both personal as well as national. According to a family member Pratap Singh, Rishi Raj Singh was fascinated by fighter planes from childhood and always wanted to become a fighter pilot. He was brilliant in studies and after completing his schooling from Jodhpur, he appeared in the entrance examination for NDA. After selection, he went on to join NDA in Pune and chose the Air Force to realise his dream to become a flyer, he said. Rishi Raj Singh is survived by his father Jaswant Singh, a hotelier; his mother Bhanwar Kanwar, a homemaker; and his younger brother Yuvraj Singh, who is pursuing his senior secondary education in Jodhpur. IAF pilot Lokendra Singh Sindhu killed in Rajasthan jet crash had become a father a month ago
Gujarats crumbling bridges: How many more deaths will it take?
AHMEDABAD: Yet another bridge collapse in Gujarat has jolted the state, exposing deep-rooted negligence and crumbling infrastructure. The 40 year-old Gambhira Bridge in Vadodara district fell apart early Wednesday, dragging multiple vehicles into the Mahisagar River. While the government rushes to give reassurances, a haunting question persistshow many tragedies will it take before accountability replaces apathy? Gambhira Bridge Collapse: 9 Dead, 9 Rescued The Gambhira Bridge, connecting Central Gujarat to Saurashtra via Padra taluka in Vadodara district, collapsed early Wednesday morning in Mujpur Nazir. The bridge, known to be in a dilapidated condition for years, finally gave way dragging down two trucks, a pickup van, an auto-rickshaw, and an Eco car into the swollen Mahisagar River. Rescue teams pulled out nine bodies, while nine others were rescued alive. The bridge had shown warning signs of structural decay, yet no action was taken to shut it down or carry out urgent repairs. Public Fury Grows: Who Will Be Held Responsible? The tragedy has sparked public outrage. Citizens are questioning why the bridge was not closed despite its poor condition. Why are officials always reactive instead of proactive? Time and again, bridges across Gujarat have collapsed, and yet, the cycle of negligence, empty promises, and lack of accountability continues. Assurances after each disaster have failed to turn into meaningful reforms or penalties for those responsible. Gujarats Shameful Bridge Collapse Timeline Hatkeshwar Bridge, Ahmedabad : Built to Last 100 Years, Failed in 5. Constructed in 2017 at a cost of Rs 40 crore, the Hatkeshwar Bridge was deemed structurally unsound in under four years. Shockingly, AMC floated a tender to demolish a bridge that was supposed to last a century. Mumtapura Bridge, Ahmedabad : On December 21, 2021, a section of the Mumtapura Bridge caved in, raising serious questions about the project company. Thankfully, the collapse didnt claim lives, but it intensified the fear surrounding Gujarat's infrastructure. Halvad Bridge, Morbi New But Unreliable: A bridge connecting New Koiba to Old Koiba collapsed on August 26, 2024just a year after it was built. Heavy rains washed away the structure, exposing poor construction quality. Morbi Suspension Bridge : Gujarats Darkest Day. It was designed for 125 people but had over 500 on it. Metro Flyover, Surat : Cracked Before Inauguration A section of the metro flyover in Saroli, Surat, Cracked even before being inaugurated. Cracks in the slab were ignored until it was too late. The bridge gave way during metro construction work. Ambedkar Bridge, Mehsana : Repeated Pleas Ignored Despite repeated requests for repair, the Ambedkar Bridge connecting Mehsana-Visnagar ring roads One part sunk on February 14 2024. Built in 2014, it had structural issues that were never addressed. Habiasar Bridge, Chotila : Heavy Rains Take It Down A bridge near Habiasar village in Surendranagar district collapsed during heavy rain. It connected over five villages. Villagers had raised alarms about its condition long ago. No one was on the bridge at the time, narrowly avoiding tragedy. Dhandhusar Bridge, Junagadh : 1975 Construction Falls Apart A part of the 45-year-old Dhandhusar bridge over the Uben River collapsed in 2023. Local connectivity took a major hit, forcing people into long detours and hardship. Janada Bridge, Botad Built in Lakhs, Collapsed in Three Years In Botads Janada village, a bridge over the Patlia River collapsed during monsoon 2023. Built just three years ago, it couldnt withstand seasonal rains. Khari River Bridge, Mehsana Bypass One part sunk in 2020 A bridge constructed over the Khari River on the Mehsana Bypass, built at a cost of crores, crumbled in just six years. The 2020 sunk was one of the early warnings of the ongoing infrastructure crisis. Other Notable Incidents : Singhrot, Vadodara (2023) Another bridge collapse with public uproar. Nandelav Bridge, Bharuch (June 2022) Under-construction bridge collapsed; people miraculously survived. Ajidem Intersection, Rajkot (2020) Bridge collapse with no casualties. Satodak Village, Rajkot (2019) Fatal structural failure. Peapok Flyover, Surat (2019) Yet another collapse highlighting contractor failure. Conclusion: Decay, Death, and Denial The recurring collapse of bridgeswhether newly built or agedreveals a systemic failure in Gujarat's infrastructure governance. Contractors cut corners, tenders are mishandled, warnings go unheeded, and officials continue to pass the buck. Behind every collapsed structure is a trail of ignored complaints, wasted taxpayer money, and shattered families. Unless real accountability is enforced and urgent structural audits conducted, Gambhira will not be the last bridge to falland Gujarat will keep mourning preventable deaths.

Opposition slams Eknath Shinde for 'Jai Gujarat' remark; calls it surrender of Maharashtra pride
MUMBAI: Amid the ongoing controversy over Marathi versus Hindi , Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday fuelled another row by ending his speech with 'Jai Gujarat' in the presence of Union Minister Amit Shah in Pune. Before concluding with 'Jai Gujarat', Shinde did say 'Jai Maharashtra'. Lauding the efforts of Union Minister Amit Shah, Shinde ended his speech with the sequence: Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat. The Opposition slammed Shinde for allegedly surrendering Marathi and Maharashtra pride before the Gujarati BJP leadership and accused him of showing a slave mentality. They alleged that Shinde is working as a slave of the BJP and that his 'Jai Gujarat' slogan reflects this mindset. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Shinde saying, the slogan was not against Maharashtra. He added that Uddhav Thackeray himself had said 'Jai Gujarat' during an event in Gujarat, and pointed out, Gujarat is not in Pakistan. There should not be hatred against any community or state. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut lashed out saying, Amit Shahs duplicate Shiv Sena has revealed its real face with Eknath Shindes 'Jai Gujarat' slogan. Raut said Shindes Shiv Sena is now Shahs Sena. How can this person (Shinde) remain in Maharashtras cabinet? He should be sacked immediately for insulting the sentiments of Marathi people and Maharashtra, Raut demanded. Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam also criticised Shinde, saying that as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he should not have said 'Jai Gujarat'. Maharashtra Congress President Harshavardhan Sapkal said Maharashtra is the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharajs self-respect. He reminded that Shivaji Maharaj had once invaded Surat for Swarajya, but today, in his state, people like Eknath Shinde have mortgaged Maharashtra's pride to Gujarat. Only a person who is helpless for power can give the slogan of 'Jai Gujarat' at a programme in Maharashtra. But a self-respecting Marathi person will never tolerate this, Sapkal said. Taking a dig at Shindes statement, Sapkal added, It is understandable for Shinde, who broke Balasaheb Thackeray's Shiv Sena and gave the party and its symbol to the owner of Gujarat who made him the Chief Minister. He now openly praises Modi and Shah. But it is not good to be so helpless as to say 'Jai Gujarat' just to please his Gujarati bosses. Eknath Shinde shamefully lowered the honour of Maharashtra in the name of being a 'loyal' soldier of Amit Shah. It was seen once again that there are many such 'models' sitting in the Maharashtra government. Has Shinde forgotten that he is not from Gujarat but the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra? Sapkal asked, demanding that Shinde resign for insulting Maharashtra. Sapkal also alleged that Shinde is working to fill the coffers of Gujarat by selling off Mumbai and Maharashtra. He said that in the last 11 years, industries, institutions, corporate offices and crores worth of investments have been shifted from Maharashtra to Gujarat because of Fadnavis and Shinde. Big projects like Vedanta-Foxconn, which would have provided employment to lakhs of youth in Maharashtra, were sent to Gujarat. Farmers in Maharashtra are committing suicide, the youth are jobless, women are unsafe, malnutrition has increased, but these helpless people in power are busy enslaving Gujarat. Such traitors of Maharashtra have no right to remain in power, Sapkal alleged. Responding to the criticism, BJP leaders said, Just because Shinde said 'Jai Gujarat', it does not mean that Shinde loves Gujarat more than Maharashtra. Such parochial thinking does not behove Marathi manoos.
BJP infighting exposes illegal dairy operations, corruption in Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: A storm is brewing across Gujarats powerful cooperative dairy sector, as internal rifts within the BJP have begun spilling out in the form of infighting, corruption, and violent altercations at top dairies. From Baroda to Mehsana to Surat, one scandal after another is laying bare the deep-rooted political and financial rot within the states milk cooperatives. The latest flashpoint is Surats Sumul Dairy, where a fierce power tussle between Chairman Mansingh Patel and Vice Chairman Raju Pathak has exploded over allegations that milk from Maharashtra was being illegally sourced, mixed, and sold through local co-operative societies. According to dairy sources, the issue, which started over fines imposed on milk importers, escalated when Pathak allegedly tried to assault the MD during a heated board discussion. Sumul Dairy Director Jayesh Patel (Delad) told The New Indian Express , Investigations revealed that 25 co-operative societies across Surat and Tapi districts were caught red-handed sourcing milk from Maharashtra, storing it in chilling plants, and funneling it into Sumul Dairy through unregistered centres. Sumul had imposed a fine of Rs 3.25 crore on these milk firms. Now, with the Congress entering the battlefield, the issue has snowballed into a full-blown political controversy. Surat Congress leader Darshan Nayak has accused the Sumul board of corruption, written to the Chief Minister, and demanded action against notified societies involved in mixing cold, imported milk with local warm supplies. Hes also called for an immediate quality audit and board dismissal, citing earlier allegations of crores-worth corruption in Sumul Dairy. When The New Indian Express reached out to Sumul Vice Chairman Raju Pathak for a comment, he curtly replied, I am busy, and declined to say anything further. The BJP high command has taken note. Sources confirm that the party leadership has summoned Sumuls chairman and vice chairman to Gandhinagar. Orders have been issued to audit the rogue societies and take legal action against those found violating milk sourcing norms. The milk auditor has been tasked with investigating chilling plants and purchase centres operating outside the legal framework. This turmoil in Sumul follows on the heels of two other explosive incidents in Gujarats dairy network: In Baroda Dairy, BJP MLA Ketan Inamdar found a financial fraud where milk was being deposited in the names of deceased members. He wrote to top officials, including the Chief Minister and Cooperation Minister, triggering an internal probe and prompting the MD, Ajay Joshi, to resign. Meanwhile, in Mehsanas Dudhsagar Dairy, a board meeting on 27 June turned violent when Vice Chairman Yogesh Patel accused Chairman Ashok Chaudhary of slapping him during a heated discussion over expired milk powder stock. The following day, Patel revealed that large quantities of spoiled powder were lying at the dairys Charada godown, forcing the chairman to face the media. Sources claim the root of this clash lies in a power struggle between two BJP heavyweights in Mehsana, allegedly backed by a state minister and a top BJP organisational leader. Across Gujarat, cooperative dairies once seen as engines of rural prosperity are now marred by corruption, factional politics, and violent infighting, reflecting the deepening cracks within the BJPs own ranks. As the state government scrambles to control the damage, the credibility of the dairy sector and the ruling party's grip over it is under severe scrutiny.

CRPF jawan caught in Surat with 22 kg ganja, blames debt from brothers cancer treatment
AHMEDABAD: Surat police apprehended a serving CRPF constable with over 22 kg of ganja, allegedly smuggled from Odisha. The accused, Seemanchal Chetan Nahak, a resident of Ganjam district in Odisha and currently posted in Delhi's CRPF unit, was caught red-handed by Varachha police during a surveillance operation acting on a tip-off. Surat City DCP Alok Kumar stated, Police intercepted Nahak and discovered ganja concealed in his trolley and handbag. A total of 22.258 kg of the banned substance, along with a mobile phone and other valuables worth Rs 2.27 lakh, were seized. Police recovered an identity card confirming that Nahak has been serving in the CRPF since 2015, with previous postings in Pulwama, Kashmir, and most recently at Rohini Jail, Delhi. He had reportedly been transferred to Assam but failed to report for duty. The Home Department is currently verifying the details of his service record. During interrogation, Nahak confessed to purchasing the ganja in Odisha for Rs 8,000 per kg and travelling to Surat to deliver it to a customer who ultimately did not appear. He admitted financial distress had driven him to the illegal trade. His brothers cancer treatment had left him with debts totalling Rs 15 lakh. Of his Rs 46,000 monthly salary, Rs 26,000 went towards home loan EMIs, leaving him unable to cover rent and basic expenses. According to police sources, Nahak had previously used his CRPF identity card to smuggle ganja by train, succeeding once. Emboldened by that success, he made a second attempt while on personal leave. He was reportedly en route to Ambaji for his sons head-shaving ceremony and took a detour to Surat to cash in by selling the ganja in Udhana. Police have now launched a broader investigation to trace Nahaks supply network and identify the intended buyer in Surat. Authorities have also sought a full service history and background verification from the Home Department as part of the inquiry into this serious breach of trust and discipline.

Surats rescue failure leaves heart patient stranded in flooded street for 30 minutes
AHMEDABAD: Flood-hit Limbayat in Gujarats Surat turned into a crisis zone as locals remained trapped in waterlogged societies for the third straight day. Amid the chaos, 65-year-old Rahman Bhai suffered a chest pain emergency, but there was no rescue boat at the scene. With no immediate help from the fire department, it took a staggering 30 minutes to carry him on a stretcher through waist-deep water to an ambulance. He was rushed to Smimmer Hospital, where treatment is currently underway. The flood not only paralysed rescue response, but nearly cost a life. Surat city has plunged into a flood crisis just days into the monsoon, with torrential rains between 22 and 24 June leaving several areas waterlogged and civic systems overwhelmed. From 6 am on 23 June to noon on 24 June alone, the city recorded a staggering 17 inches of rainfall. Continuous downpour across the district caused the Tapi River and local creeks to swell, flooding key areas like Seemada, Parvat Patiya, Sarthana, Godadara, Bhatar, Limbayat and Saniya Hemad. In Parvat Patiya, knee-deep water stretched across 1 to 1.5 km of road, bringing traffic and pedestrian movement to a halt. Locals, desperate to get to work or run errands, resorted to hiring pedal rickshaws for as much as Rs 100 just to navigate the flooded roads. Meanwhile, numerous vehicles attempting to cross waterlogged streets were left stranded, worsening the chaos. Surat reels under 13 inches of rain in 24 hours; one youth missing after creek surge In one alarming case in Mithi Bay, a patient in urgent need of medical attention was delayed by 30 minutes due to the unavailability of rescue boats. The delay in reaching a 108 ambulance highlighted a major lapse in emergency preparedness. The incident underscored the dangerous lack of medical and transport infrastructure during waterlogged conditions, putting lives at risk. Frustration is mounting among residents, particularly as drainage systems have completely failed in the worst-hit zones. Locals are furious that even after a site visit by the Municipal Commissioner, the situation has shown no signs of improvement. Residents allege a total collapse of the civic response and accuse the administration of negligence in handling flood relief. Surat Police, meanwhile, are working to maintain law and order. DCP Bhagirath Gadhvi confirmed that rising water levels in the upper catchments have pushed more water into Surats creeks, leading to further inundation. He said police are on the ground, spreading awareness, urging residents not to leave home unnecessarily, and coordinating with locals in flood-hit areas. As floodwaters remain stagnant in several societies for the second consecutive day, the Surtis, already weary of rising waters, are now grappling with broken promises and a paralysed system. The monsoon has just begun, but the city's resilience is already under severe test.

MoRTH to frame IRC guidelines after adopting new-age machines for faster highway construction
NEW DELHI: After the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) decided to adopt Automated and Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) for highway development to ensure timely project completion, it announced that Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines will be prepared based on feedback from contractors and concessionaires. The ministry has already sanctioned atleast 16 projects, where innovative machines will be used. According to the officials, Cabinet approval is awaited for 10 projects envisaged for implementation of AIMC system. With a significant growth in the national highways network including a significant increase in Greenfield and Brownfield highways with high embankments requiring a significant amount of earthwork and proper compaction in the last one decade, it has been felt appropriate to induct AIMC in highway construction, said officials. The decision to formally adopt the system was taken after evaluation of efficacy in a pilot; Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Project, where in GPS-aided Motor Grader, Intelligent Compactor and Stringless Paver were used. The ministry also took into consideration the feedback from stakeholders and international guidelines and specifications. The ministry has also sought feedback on adoption of AIMC to formulate IRC guidelines, added officials. Officials added that the ministry would facilitate the concessionaire or contractor with the required license for the radio frequency range from the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) for the use of machines. The list of projects, which are already sanctioned, includes Western Bypass Gwalior (29 kms), 6-lane Greenfield Ludhiana Bypass (25 kms), Deoghar Bypass (49 kms), Shillong-Silchar Corridor (167 kms), Vrindavan Bypass (15 kms) and Patna-Arrah-Sasaram (125 kms) in Bihar. The projects which have been submitted for the Cabinet approval are Satellite Township Ring Road of Bengaluru (STRR) Karnataka (144 kms), BadveI Nellore Corridor (108 kms) in Andhra Pradesh, 4-lane access controlled Sirhind-Sehna section of NH-205AG (107 kms) in Punjab, and Nashik-Ahmednagar- Solapur-Akkalkot segment of the Surat-Chennai Expressway (374 kms). The ministry, in December, sought feedback from roads construction agencies, public work departments in states and union territories and other stakeholders on the proposal for adoption of the construction facilitated by innovatory. The benefits of AIMC are expected high adherence to design specification, improved rideability, performance durability and longevity and reduced wastage as well. The technology-driven construction also increases productivity, helps in real-time documentation, brings better transparency and minimises human interventions.

ASHA worker duped by cyber fraudsters; fakes own abduction after lottery scam in MP
BHOPAL:An ASHA worker in Madhya Pradeshs Jabalpur district suffered mental trauma and financial loss after cyber fraudsters lured her with a fake lottery, manipulated her with arrest threats, and pushed her to fake her own kidnapping. In March 2025, Jabalpur-resident 36-year-old Pushpalata Jharia got a call from a foreign VPN number, where the caller informed her about having won gold, diamond and a lottery prize worth Rs 10 lakh. To get the prize, she was first asked to deposit some money online, and then the fraudsters started contacting her regularly. A few days later, the fraudsters said that the person assigned to deliver the lottery prize had been arrested. Since her Aadhaar card copy was with him, they warned, she could also face arrest soon. Caught between fear and greed, the woman, whose husband does small jobs and the couple have two children, sent four lakh rupees online. When the relatives came to know about such a big transaction, they questioned the woman, but the fraudsters had cautioned her that if she told anyone, the reward would be cancelled, which made her remain silent. On April 23, she went to her parents home. Two days later she left saying that she was going to Bargi, but then went missing. Her family lodged a missing report with the local police on May 4. Swayed by the fraudsters, the woman kept wandering from Jabalpur to Mumbai, then Surat and finally to Delhi. She spent the nights at railway stations, ate free food, and kept sending more money to the fraudsters by working wherever possible. Her ordeal worsened when the fraudsters instructed her to fake her own kidnapping. She recorded a video in tears and sent it to them, which they forwarded to her husband on June 1, demanding Rs 2 lakh as ransom. They threatened that failure to pay would result in her being killed and her body dismembered and dumped in a forest. Worried about her daughter's life, her mother filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. On the court's direction, the police deployed four teams for the search. During this time, the woman's phone was stolen, but she called her relatives from someone else's phone, which gave her location in Greater Noida. On Monday (June 16), the police team recovered her safely from there. Though reunited with her family after a month and a half, the woman remains mentally disturbed, experiencing dizziness, trembling, and delusional belief that the fraudsters are innocent and will still reward her. Police have initiated her counselling and launched a search for the cyber criminals. The victim's sister-in-law, Asha Jharia, while recounting what happened over the last few months, said, when she was constantly asking for money from relatives and villagers, we asked her why she needed money. She said that she is helping a relative. Once she even sent money from my daughter's phone. We explained many times that when there is no money in your own house, then why are you helping others, but she was not ready to accept. Pushpalatas college-going daughter, Poonam, said, My mother got a call in March, in which a reward was promised, which included gold and diamond jewellery and cash. In return, she was asked for five lakh rupees. Slowly, mother kept giving money. Later, one day, a message came about kidnapping, which scared all of us. We contacted the police. The last call came early this month, saying that 'Weve left your mother in Delhi, go and pick her up.' Since then, the calls have stopped. Shes back home, but still thinks that she will get the reward. According to Circle SP (Bargi-Jabalpur), A Mishra, under whose supervision the case is being investigated, four to five police teams had been deployed to trace the woman. Wherever the call came from, our team reached there, but in each case, the woman had borrowed a phone from an unknown person to make the call, he said. The investigation later revealed that those whose phones were used were innocent and had merely offered help. Mishra added that the situation worsened when the fraudsters sent a video of the womans fake kidnapping to her family, which was traced to a foreign IP address. This country is not cooperating with us these days, he said. The case took a more disturbing turn when threatening audio messages with abusive language began to arrive, warning that the woman would be killed. When we recovered her in Delhi, she was sitting alone. We are counselling her because she still has not come out of the delusion. She believes she has not been conned and that she will still get the reward, he added.

Surat woman flew on Air India jet hours before crash, recalls mid-air glitches
AHMEDABAD: In a chilling twist to the Ahmedabad plane crash tragedy, a passenger who disembarked from the same Air India aircraft just hours before the crash has come forward with a harrowing account of multiple technical faults experienced during the earlier leg of the journey. Hinaben Kalaria, a resident of Surat, had arrived in Ahmedabad on Air India flight AI172 from London, which landed at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 12 noon a little over an hour before the aircraft was scheduled for its onward journey to London, where it crashed near Meghaninagar shortly after takeoff, claiming hundreds of lives. Speaking to reporters, Hinaben recounted a series of unsettling technical issues she experienced aboard the aircraft, which she took with her husband and son from London to Ahmedabad. As soon as the flight took off from London, the air conditioning system was shut off, she said. It became uncomfortably warm, and we were surprised because this never happens on an international flight. She added that all display screens inside the aircraft were non-functional throughout the journey. When she inquired, an air hostess responded, Please update your phone software, and dont worry the displays are off due to a technical issue. Even during landing in Ahmedabad, there was a strange rattling sound inside the plane. It wasnt normal, she said. There was a vibration and noise as if something wasnt right with the planes structure or wheels. Hinaben, who had earlier travelled from Ahmedabad to Egypt via London without any issues, said she felt anxious and unsettled during the return flight to Ahmedabad. There was something different this time. I told my husband I didnt feel safe, she recalled. When we landed, I thought I was just being paranoid. But an hour later, the same aircraft crashed. As news of the crash broke, Hinaben said she began receiving frantic phone calls from family and friends, who realised she had just flown on the same aircraft. I thank God that we got off that plane in time, she said. Its heartbreaking to think that so many people who boarded after us didnt survive. Im alive by fate alone. Her account adds a new layer to the tragedy and may aid the probe launched by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau into the crash.

Search operations were conducted across Patna, Muzaffarpur, Surat and Panipat under the provisions of PMLA. During the search operations, several incriminating evidence and documents were seized. Sources said that the search operation started on Thursday evening and concluded on Friday. ED launched the investigation on the basis of FIR registered by Special Vigilance Unit (SVU), Bihar against Rishu Shree and others. Rishu Shrees firms work as contractors/sub-contractors in various state governments departments, such as water resources, health, public health engineering, urban development, Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO), education, building and construction, and rural works department. Rishu Shree allegedly got government tenders rewarded in his favour with the complicity of various government officials. With a crater on Panambur highway claiming the life of Surathkals Ashraf on Monday night, pothole deaths in Monsoon series appears to have begun
NEW DELHI: A new study reveals that climate change is expected to cause a 43% increase in the intensity of extreme rainfall events throughout the country, along with a two-fold rise in heatwave days in major Indian cities. It recommends establishing a climate observatory to provide real-time early warnings about extreme weather events to help minimise damage. Conducted by IPE Global and Esri India, the study titled Weathering the Storm: Managing Monsoons in a Warming Climate analysed district-level spatial and temporal assessments to develop heat stress scenarios for the years 2030 and 2040. It aimed to establish a connection between climate change and the increased frequency and unpredictability of extreme rainfall and heatwave events. According to the study, major cities in India, including Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Patna, Surat, Bhubaneswar, and Thane, are likely to experience a twofold increase in heatwave days by 2030. These rising heatwave conditions are expected to lead to more erratic and intense rainfall. Extended heat wave conditions are likely to trigger more frequent, incessant and erratic rainfall events, said Abinash Mohanty of IPE Global, a co-author of the paper. The paper underlines the grim situation of climate change's impact. It points out that 8 out of 10 districts in India are going to experience multiple instances of incessant and erratic rainfall by 2030. The frequency, intensity, and unpredictability of these extreme heat and rainfall events have risen significantly in recent decades, said Mohanty. The study shows that India has witnessed a 15-fold increase in extreme heat wave days across the March to May and June to September months in last three decades (between 1993-2024). Alarmingly, the last decade alone has witnessed a 19-fold increase in extreme heat wave days. We found that the monsoon season in India is witnessing an extended summer-like condition except on non-rainy days, said Mohanty. According to the study, more than 75% of districts in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Manipur will witness the double whammy of heat stress-induced erratic and incessant rainfall by 2030. Districts of these states will at least witness one instance of heat wave during March, April, and May by 2030. We advocate for establishing a Climate Risk Observatory (CRO) to provide real-time risk assessments at national, devising risk financing instruments to mitigate heat risk and extreme rainfall events, said Mohanty. The study also suggests appointing heat-risk champions within district disaster management committees. This will allow these agencies to prioritise and unify the heat-risk mitigation efforts at the district level and, consequently, accelerate heat resilience.

Surat Horror: Teen raped, impregnated by online friend
AHMEDABAD: In a deeply distressing case from Gujarats Surat City, a minor girl (15 year old) from the Umarwada area was allegedly raped multiple times by a 25-year-old man she befriended through social media. The accused, came into contact with the girl online and slowly lured her into what he portrayed as a romantic relationship. According to police, the accused, befriended the minor through social media platforms. Their online interactions eventually led to the exchange of phone numbers and, later, personal meetings. Investigators say accused gained the girl's trust and convinced her he was in love with her. Under this false pretense, he met her several times in secluded areas near a creek within the Puna police station limits, where the alleged sexual assaults took place. The matter came to light only recently when the girl began suffering from abdominal pain and difficulty in breathing. Her mother initially took her to a local hospital, where the symptoms were treated, but not diagnosed. However, on June 3, after the symptoms persisted, she was taken to Another Hospital. There, doctors informed the family that the minor was four months pregnant, said police officials. This revelation shocked the family. When they gently questioned her, the girl revealed the details of her contact with accused and what had happened over the past few months. The family immediately filed a complaint with Puna police station. A case of rape and relevant charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered. The accused was arrested shortly afterward. Inspector from Puna police station confirmed, The accused formed a relationship with the victim under false emotional promises and repeatedly Raped her. He has been arrested, and further investigation is underway. The minor has been admitted to the ICU for medical monitoring. Her family has filed a petition in the Surat Sessions Court seeking permission to terminate the pregnancy.
LUCKNOW: In a major crackdown, the Lucknow police tracked a rape accused, Deepak Verma, 24, and neutralised him in an encounter near the Sugarcane Institute in the Devi Kheda area on the outskirts of the state capital early Friday morning. Deepak, who had allegedly raped a two-and-a-half-year-old girl under the Alambagh metro station just hours earlier, was gunned down after he opened fire on a police team that had zeroed in on him. He sustained two bullet injuries in the chest and later died during treatment. The heinous crime occurred in the early hours of Friday when the accused allegedly kidnapped the toddler, who was sleeping with her parents under the Alambagh metro station. Gagging her mouth, he lifted her and carried her towards the lift area around 2:30 am, where he raped her. After the girl fainted due to severe injuries, the accused, presuming her dead, fled the scene. A handicapped passerby later found the child lying unconscious and bleeding and alerted nearby residents and her parents. Soon after the incident, a 3.55-second CCTV footage from the metro premises surfaced. It showed Deepak arriving on a white Honda Activa, pressing the lift button, and then crossing the road to pick up the girl. He is seen lifting her and taking her towards the lift where the assault took place. Police said the footage suggested the accused had been monitoring the location and assessing the situation multiple times before striking. The victim was initially taken to Lokbandhu Hospital but was later referred to King Georges Medical University (KGMU) due to the severity of her injuries. Doctors said her private parts were badly damaged, and she remained in critical condition. She underwent plastic surgery at the KGMU trauma centre. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Ashish Srivastava, confirmed that Deepak Verma was identified through his scooters registration number captured on CCTV. His phone location was traced to the Sugarcane Institute on VIP Road, about 5 km from the crime scene. When police approached him on Friday morning, Deepak allegedly opened fire in an attempt to escape. In retaliation, police shot him, and he later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The incident sparked widespread outrage, as it took place in the heart of the city, close to three police posts, including a pink booth just 300 meters from the crime scene. The fact that the attack occurred in a supposedly secure area raised serious questions about police patrolling and public safety. Amid mounting public anger, the Lucknow Police formed five teams to track down the culprit. Within 24 hours, he was located and neutralised. According to police sources, Deepak Verma, a resident of Duda Colony in Aishbagh, was the youngest of four siblings. He sold water illegally on trains and occasionally participated in religious tableaux during Jagrans. He had previously been jailed in a similar case along with two accomplices. The scooter used in the crime had originally been gifted to Deepak Vermas elder brother by their sister in Surat. Deepak later took control of the vehicle and was known to roam the streets at night. Police sources said Verma had visited the Alambagh metro station area two to three times on the night of the assault. Once he was certain that the girls parents were asleep, he abducted her and raped her. Following the assault, Verma reportedly wandered through nearby localities on the scooter for over two-and-a-half hours, appearing unconcerned and showing no signs of remorse. Investigators also recovered several disturbing images from his phone, including photos of him dressed as an Aghori. Police believe this may indicate a troubling pattern in his personal behaviour and mental state.
Consecration ceremony of Ram Darbar held in Ayodhya; CM Yogi leads rituals
LUCKNOW: The three-day consecration ceremony of Ram Darbar, wherein, Lord Ram was enthroned as king with Goddess Sita by his side and brothers, Bharatji, Shatrughanji and Lakshmanji, along with Lord Hanuman, in his Darbar on the first floor of the newly-built Ram temple on Shree Ramjanmabhoomi complex, concluded in Ayodhya on Thursday. Lord Rams enthronement took place in the 15-minute auspicious Abhijeet Muhurat between 11:25 am and 11:40 am in the presence of UP CM Yogi Adityanath amid chanting of vedic mantras and performance of final rituals by 101 high priests who had converged for the occasion in Ayodhya from across the country. In fact, the rituals towards the consecration ceremony had commenced on Tuesday, June 3. The final phase of the ceremony lasted around 45-50 minutes as the puja had started at 11 am. CM Yogi, who had his 53rd birthday on Thursday, spent the day in Ayodhya leading the puja and performing the aarti of Ram Lalla in the Sanctum Sanctorum on the ground floor of the temple. After the rituals in the sanctum sanctorum, the CM reached the first floor of the temple for Pran Pratishtha of Ram Darbar and led the rituals there as well. On the occasion, Dr Anil Mishra, member of the Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust and host of the ceremony, was also present along with his wife Usha Mishra. Additionally, Govind Dev Giri, a member of the Trust, felicitated Yogi Adityanath. After the rituals, CM greeted the select people who were invited to the ceremony. Earlier, he also offered prayers at the Hanuman Garhi Mandir in Ayodhya as a part of his schedule to attend Pran Pratishtha. Expressing his gratitude, the CM took to X and wrote about being a part of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony. Today, in the holy birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, Ayodhya Dham, I am getting the great fortune of becoming a witness to the programme organised for the Pran-Pratishtha of the holy idols of deities in the eight temples including Shri Ram Darbar on the first floor of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, he said in the post. He also called the occasion a new expression of 'Ek Bharat-Shrestha Bharat' and a victory for Lord Ram. Sharing the details of the event, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust posted on X that the first day of the ceremony involved rituals initiated in Yagyashala, specially curated for the event. These rituals continued on the second day as well in which various Anushthans and the Utsav Vigrahas were taken on a Parikrama of the mandir premises. Along with Ram Darbar, the consecration of idols of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Lord Surya, Goddess Bhagwati, Goddess Annapurna, and Sheshavtar in seven other temples on the premises also took place. It may be recalled that the consecration of Ram Lalla (child form of Lord Ram) in the sanctum sanctorum on the ground floor of the temple had taken place with much fanfare in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and a galaxy of dignitaries from across the globe on January 22, 2024. Moreover, the ornaments which adorned the idols consecrated in Ram Darbar were made in gold, precious stones and gems, were donated by a Surat-based businessman, Mukesh Patel. The ornaments, including 11 crowns, necklaces, earrings, forehead tilaks, bows and arrows, which bejewelled the idols, included a 1000-carat diamond, 30 kg of silver, 300 gms of gold and 300 carats of rubies. As per the temple trust sources, the ornaments were brought to Ayodhya through a chartered plane and handed over to the temple trust. Unlike the first consecration ceremony to which over 3000 guests were invited, for the second consecration, the temple trust had invited 350 guests, including the trust members, saints and seers from across the country.

YouTube-trained thief behind Rs 60.83 lakh Diamond heist caught
AHMEDABAD: A meticulously planned diamond heist worth Rs 60.83 lakh sent shockwaves through Rajkots gem industry in April but after a 45-day cat-and-mouse chase, police have finally nabbed the mastermind behind the theft. In a case that reads like a modern crime thriller, the thief guided by tips from jail inmates and tricks learned on YouTube pulled off the audacious burglary using a magnetic drill machine sourced from Mumbai. The theft took place on the night of 10 April 2025, when the accused broke into a diamond factory on Rajkots Kotharia Ring Road. Gaining entry through a rear door, he cracked open the heavy-duty safe and disappeared without leaving behind any obvious trace. Chaos erupted the following morning as senior police officials rushed to the scene. Ten teams were formed, and over 100 CCTV cameras in and around the vicinity were scanned yet none captured the thief. Investigators believe he carefully avoided detection by walking along a central road divider to steer clear of surveillance cameras. With no digital or physical trail, the Crime Branch widened its net, reaching out to diamond traders across Saurashtra and South Gujarat. In parallel, officers began interrogating known criminals linked to diamond thefts. A breakthrough came when an inmate at Rajkot jail revealed that fellow prisoner Ajay Nayaka had previously enquired about committing a perfect heist without being caught on CCTV. Further investigation uncovered Nayakas unconventional methods. While in prison, he had received advice from fellow inmates and studied burglary techniques on YouTube. He was specifically told to use a magnetic drill machine a high-powered tool capable of piercing reinforced safes. Nayaka travelled to Mumbai to procure the device, returning to Rajkot to carry out the plan with surgical precision. A repeat offender with several previous cases, Nayaka was difficult to trace. He had no mobile phone, no family contact, and no fixed residence. However, surveillance on his known associates in Surat and Valsad eventually led investigators to Umerpada, where he was hiding. As police closed in, Nayaka made a desperate attempt to escape by leaping from a second-floor building, injuring his hand. He was arrested and brought back to Rajkot for questioning. During interrogation, he admitted to conducting multiple recces of the factory. He had even camped atop a neighbouring shed to study entry and exit points. After two failed attempts, he succeeded on his third try on 10 April. Post-heist, he lay low for over an hour, hiding in a pit near the scene. He then made his way on foot to City Road, travelled to Surat and Valsad in search of buyers, but failed to secure a favourable deal. Eventually, Nayaka returned to Rajkot, where he buried the stolen diamonds in a pit near an abandoned factory. On 29 May, police recovered diamonds and other valuables worth Rs 61.09 lakh based on his confession. Ajay Nayaka has now been charged under Sections 305(A), 331(4) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), marking the closure of one of Rajkots most calculated diamond thefts to date.
From glittering lies to handcuffs: Fake gold fugitive caught working as labourer in MP
AHMEDABAD: Nine years after vanishing with Rs 9 lakh in a fake gold scam, a wanted accused in a serious fraud case registered at Kapodra police station in Surat has been arrested by the Crime Branch from Madhya Pradesh. The accused had duped a local resident by claiming his friend had discovered gold while digging in Bhuj, luring the victim into a deal. He handed over one kilogram of fake yellow metal biscuits as part of the con, then disappeared without a trace, until now. After nine years on the run, Surat City Crime Branch has arrested Mahesh Hamaria Tomar, the prime accused in a Rs 9 lakh gold fraud case, from Chikoda village under the Bakhtgarh police station limits in Madhya Pradeshs Alirajpur district. Acting on a tip-off, the team tracked him down while he was working as a labourer, ending a near-decade-long manhunt. Tomar had been absconding since 2016, when a case was first registered against him at Kapodra police station, his first criminal offence, prompting the court to issue a warrant under CRPC Section 70. According to police, the complainant, Dharmesh Ramani, a labour contractor from Lakshminarayan Society in Surats Kapodra area, was lured into a trap by Tomar, who claimed that his friend had discovered gold during an excavation in Bhuj, Kutch. To win Ramanis trust, Tomar first gave him a sample of real gold and then convinced him to hand over Rs 9 lakh in exchange for one kilogram of what turned out to be fake yellow metal biscuits. Tomar fled immediately after the deal, vanishing without a trace, until Crime Branch sleuths followed fresh leads to Andharkas village and confirmed his identity. He has now been handed over to Kapodra police for further legal action. The accused faces charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. Meanwhile, police have launched a probe to identify and apprehend his accomplices involved in the racket.
Gas gun spark causes runway fire at Surat airport; three flights, helicopter diverted
AHMEDABAD: A sudden blaze sparked by a gas gun used to deter bird strikes led to a grassfire near the runway at Surat International Airport on Thursday afternoon, briefly halting flight operations and causing panic among ground staff and passengers. Firefighting vehicles rushed to the scene moments after the alarm was raised, dousing the flames with water. The incident unfolded just as an aircraft was preparing for take-off, prompting a swift emergency response. The fire was quickly brought under control, allowing the runway to resume operations. Flight movement has since returned to normal. According to sources, the grassfire near the runway disrupted several scheduled flights and helicopter operations. A private airlines Surat-Delhi service was among the affected, facing delays due to limited runway access. A Hyderabad-Surat flight was also impacted as emergency protocols were activated. In addition, a helicopter en route to Surat was held back, and the Bangalore-Surat flight experienced temporary disruption amid the chaos. A sudden fire near the runway grounded the Surat-Delhi flight that was preparing for take-off, according to sources. As emergency crews responded, an incoming helicopter was forced to divert to the nearby Hazira helipad. Simultaneously, a private airlines flight was rerouted to Ahmedabad due to the runway shutdown. The disruption halted all take-offs and landings, affecting at least three subsequent flights. As of now, the airport authority has not issued an official statement on the incident. Airport Director Anand Sharma told local media that the fire broke out in a grassy area within the operational zone around 1:30 p.m., triggered by a spark from a gas gun used to prevent bird strikes. A spark from the gas gun caused the fire, Sharma said. Immediate action was taken to stop it from spreading to the runway, which had to be closed until 2:45 p.m. Airport fire engines swiftly brought the blaze under control, but not before it disrupted multiple flights. As the firefighting operation continued, the incoming Surat-Hyderabad flight was diverted to Ahmedabad due to safety concerns. Shortly after, the Bangalore-Surat flight was also rerouted, this time to Vadodara.

Gujarat: BJP MP wants names of places such as 'Turkeywad' and 'Pakistan' removed from Surat map
AHMEDABAD: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, backlash is now spilling over to TurkeyIslamabads vocal allyfueling nationalist pushback on home soil. In Gujarats Surat city, local fury has turned toward neighborhoods long bearing names like 'Turkeywad,' 'Pakistan,' and 'Bangladesh.' Riding this wave of sentiment, the Surat BJP MP has formally urged the Municipal Commissioner to erase these names, pressing the Surat Municipal Corporation to strip any symbolic trace of nations now under public ire. In a letter, Lok Sabha MP Mukesh Dalal stated, Generally, there is some history behind the naming of streets, neighborhoods, main roads or settlements in cities. These names often reflect the historical, geographical, or cultural identity of the area. They are typically named after great personalities of the nation, state, or citysocio-political leaders or national martyrswith the intent that future generations should recognize and remember them for their contributions. Expressing concern over certain place names in Surat, he added, It is sad and surprising that many areas of Surat city are known by names associated with countries that are considered enemies of India. Why should we allow names that reflect nations which promote and support terrorism against India, encourage fanatical communalism, create instability, and pose a threat to the unity and integrity of our country? In his letter, Lok Sabha MP Mukesh Dalal wrote, Today, many areas in the city are known by the names of enemy countries like Turkeywad, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This is an insult to the brave soldiers of our country and to the people of Surat. Name board announcing Turkeywad in Surat. Referring to recent events, he added, On one hand, after the cowardly act committed by terrorists loyal to Pakistan in Pahalgam, the brave soldiers of our nationunder the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modiare showing immense courage by eliminating terrorists and destroying their bases. On the other hand, allowing such names in Surat city is completely unacceptable. Dalal demanded immediate action, stating, A list should be prepared of all areas in the city that bear names of enemy countries like Turkeywad, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. These names must be removed and replaced with appropriate nationalist names that reflect the sentiments and aspirations of the people. BJP MP Mukesh Dalal, who grabbed headlines during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, made political history even before a single vote was cast. On April 22, 2024, Dalal was declared elected unopposed from Surat after seven candidates withdrew and the Congress nominee's affidavit was rejectedclearing the field entirely. This dramatic turn of events made Dalal the first MP to enter the 18th Lok Sabha without a contest, marking a rare and headline-grabbing political sweep.
