By these projects, Indias motto for Viksit Bharat is being strengthened. We have worked at unprecedented pace for modernisation of infrastructure in all sectors including Railway in the last 11 years, the Prime Minister asserted. He added that the Indian Railways, through modern trains, is modernising its services and accelerating development. A street of ambition & absence
The sun in Chennai does not merely shine it gradually starts asserting dominance. In the morning, its rays gently prod the skin as a prelude to the heat that grows to be unstoppable by noon. By afternoon, a fleeting breeze offers brief respite, only to be replaced by a humid cloak enveloping the rest of the day. Yet, for the vendors of Pantheon Road (Cotton Street), this relentless cycle is a routine. Their response: Athu enna ? Summer avlo thaane ? Their daily toil under the unforgiving sun mirrors the broader struggles of the working class persistent but often invisible in the citys wider narrative. Here on Cotton Street a narrow, densely packed strip of authorised street vendors in central Chennai bolts of fabric and routines of commerce mask deeper stories: of inherited labour, quiet ambition, and a total absence of women in public-facing roles. No place for women Cotton dominates the visuals. Neatly arranged fabrics stretch in orderly stacks, from plain weaves to intricate patterns checks, stripes, florals in every shade, from deep blues to soft pastels. Synthetic blends, linens, and silks are sorted with care. Scarves sway as ends tether to rods; shirts and trousers rest in tall piles. The uniformity reflects discipline built over years. But amid all this fabric, something is missing. Not a single stall on Cotton Street is run by a woman. The absence is striking, and reluctantly accepted. Veyil romba jasthi . Ladies-ku kashtam (The heat is too much; its hard for women), says one vendor. Theres no toilet or security, another adds. Showroom is fine, but this is a road, someone shrugs. Pushed further, and the answers fade into silence. Inside a textile shop, slightly removed from the street, a woman works at the billing counter. But when approached, she refuses to speak. The male shop owner offers a few polite lines about stock and business nothing about the near-total invisibility of women in this trade. Inheriting a livelihood For most vendors, this is not just a job its a legacy. Trade on Cotton Street flows through family lines, but rarely across gender. Saravanan, who has worked on Cotton Street for eight years, entered the trade through his father. My dad used to do thuni (cloth) business. After finishing my degree, I joined Cotton Street. His mother runs a boutique. His brother is in the business too. But when asked about sisters or female cousins entering the trade, he asserts: Ladies havent worked here. Prabhu, folding fabric outside his chittappas kadai for the last three years, recalls weekends when crowds pour in. Romba busy Saturday, Sunday the streets would be crowded. People from all age groups would come. School pasanga , old people, everyone. His stock includes export surplus from Surat and Kolkata, sometimes blends from Guduvancherry. Tailors, designers, even actors stop by to buy. Behind the display Despite the colour and commerce, the work is tough and comforts a few. There are no public toilets. Some stalls dont even have a fan. We we experience searing headache and dizziness. But this is normal for us now, says Prabhu. They fold, sell, endure always in still, hot air. The earnings vary. Some days, we get Rs 600. For food, another expenses, Rs 100 is gone. If lucky, we would make Rs 1,200, Prabhu says. Most vendors are part of Pantheon Thozhilar Sangam, a loosely structured union that has existed for decades. We (the ones who dont own a store yet) get paid through the owners. If we have issues, we approach the Sangam, shares Prabhu. There is a fixed rent for the stalls that they pay to the government, `100 every month through DD. There is also the unavoidable negotiation with heat, customers and stall owners. And yet, ambition persists quiet, but steady. Saravanan dreams of going beyond his street stall. I want to buy a shop like this. I want something of my own. Others take pride in who comes to buy. Mathiyazhagan lights up while stating that his shop is preferred by the people from the film industry and political circles. Sampathkumar, a veteran of the street for over four decades, remembers its beginnings: First there was palaka (a wooden slab). Then only four stalls. Now 77 stalls. There is a lot of improvement. His goods come from Royapuram, Erode, Jaipur, Ahmedabad a circuit built over years, sustained by trust. High-class customers will come, those who purchase from the car. But all that is mostly on weekends, he says bluntly. The customers experience of running their hands on the fabrics, testing the quality, and fully convincing themselves before choosing, makes it wholesome; one that is probably lost with the advent of purchasing by just a click. Even in an era of online marketplaces and climate strain, Cotton Street takes up its own significance powered by human connection. The fabric sold here is only half the story. The rest the heat, the labour is not displayed, but worn by the sellers.

Woman drugged and gang raped in Surat; BJP member arrested
AHMEDABAD: A chilling gang rape case has shocked Gujarats Surat city, with BJP Surat City ward general secretary Aditya Upadhyay at the centre of the storm. Upadhyay allegedly spiked a 23-year-old womans drink before driving her, half-conscious, to a hotel where his associate, Gaurav Singh, was already waiting. What followed was a brutal assault, as the duo took turns raping the victim. Upon regaining consciousness, the survivor immediately contacted the police and lodged a formal complaint. Swift action followed: a case was filed, and both accused were arrested. As outrage mounted, the Bharatiya Janata Party scrambled to contain the fallout, suspending Upadhyay from his post without delay. Speaking to the media, DCP of Surat Zone-5, Rakesh Barot, said, A complaint was registered yesterday at Jahangir Pura police station in which a rape case was filed against two accused. Based on the complaint, we have now registered it as a gang rape case. Suspension letter Barot further added, The complainant stated that she was taken to a beach and offered a cold drink, after which she became intoxicated. The two accused then took her to a hotel and raped her. According to Barot, the accused, identified as Aditya and Gaurav, have been arrested. Further investigation is underway, he said. According to sources, a routine market visit turned into a nightmare for a young woman in her early 20s in Surat, when she encountered Aditya Upadhyay, an acquaintance and the then-General Secretary of BJPs Surat City Ward No. 8. Posing as a friendly face, Upadhyay coaxed her into his car under the pretext of a casual conversation. Once inside, he offered her a caffeinated drink, laced with sedatives, leaving her semi-conscious within minutes. Seizing the opportunity, he drove her to a hotel, where his associate, Gaurav Singh, was already waiting. Behind closed doors, the two men allegedly took turns raping the incapacitated woman in a chilling display of premeditated brutality. The horror did not end there. The accused dumped the survivor near her house after the assault, attempting to erase their tracks. But as soon as the woman regained consciousness, she approached the police and exposed the crime in full detail, triggering an immediate crackdown. Surat Police wasted no time: both Upadhyay and Gaurav were arrested and charged. Investigators launched a thorough probe, examining hotel CCTV footage, car records, call data, and the survivors statement to strengthen the case. What makes this incident even more incendiary is the political connection. The primary accused, Aditya Upadhyay, held a post in the ruling BJPs local unit, a fact that sparked a wave of outrage. In swift damage control, BJP Surat city president Paresh Patel suspended Upadhyay from the party. With remand proceedings underway, police say more damning revelations may soon surface as the investigation intensifies.

Gujarat: Female tutor abducts minor boy, becomes pregnant; gets court nod for abortion
AHMEDABAD: Following the arrest of a 23-year-old female tutor for allegedly abducting her 13-year-old male student and fleeing across state lines, it was revealed that she is 20 weeks pregnant. While DNA testing is underway to determine paternity, she has requested an abortion. The case, which has gripped Surat, Gujarat, began when the boy was reported missing from a residential area in Pune. The pair was located and detained at the Rajasthan border five days later. As the investigation progressed, she admitted to have engaged in sexual activity with the minor, who authorities confirmed is biologically capable of fathering a child. However, to determine if he is the father of the fetus, a DNA sample was collected and sent for forensic testing. The results are still pending. 23-year-old Surat teacher, who eloped with 13-year-old student, found five months pregnant Before the DNA results could be submitted, the accused approached the court seeking permission to terminate the pregnancy. Represented by her advocate, she made an appeal to the court, which subsequently requested input from both the investigating police and medical authorities. While the police sought additional time to respond, the Gynaecology Department of the hospital provided a detailed report confirming that the woman was 20 weeks and three days pregnant. According to sources, the medical report emphasised that continuing the pregnancy could lead to serious psychological and social consequences for the unmarried woman. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, which permits abortion up to 22 weeks under certain conditions, the court approved the request. The abortion procedure has since been initiated. Police Inspector submitted the medical documentation to the POCSO court in compliance with legal protocols. The investigation remains ongoing, with the DNA results expected to play a key role in determining further action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The tutor has already been booked under BNS Section 137 (2) for abducting a minor.

Pakistan moving troops in forward areas, launched strikes at multiple locations: Indian govt
NEW DELHI: Pakistan's military is observed to be moving its troops to forward areas, India said on Saturday, terming it a provocative move as the two countries continued attacking each other's military facilities, dangerously escalating the ongoing conflict. The Pakistan military is observed to be moving their troops to border areas, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said at a press briefing along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Officials said that Pakistan has also deployed heavy weaponry to target both Indian military and civilian areas, adding that the Indian Armed Forces are fully prepared for any eventuality. Wing Commander Singh said India was committed to on-escalation provided that Pakistan reciprocates. The officials also stated that Pakistan has been carrying out escalatory actions, predominantly using heavy-calibre weapons, missiles, and fighter jets to target military sites along the Western front. They added that the attacks have also included cowardly strikes on civilian infrastructure, including schools as well as medical facilities in Srinagar, Avantipura and Udhampur, terming it a deploarable act. Around 400 drones used to target military bases, places of worship: Centre on Pakistani escalation Col Qureshi explained that the Pakistan military is using unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs), long-range weapons, and other heavy equipment, attempting to hit more than 26 locations across India along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC). The targets included airbases in Udhampur, Pathankot, Adhampur, and Nalia. Pakistan military has resorted to unprofessional actions, targeting civil airbases in Srinagar, Awantipur, and Jammu, as well as schools and civilian infrastructure in an irresponsible manner, she said. At the LoC and IB, their fighter jets attempted to intrude at over 26 locations. The Indian Armed Forces neutralised most of the attempts. However, there was some damage at air force stations in Udhampur, Pathankot, Bhuj, and Bathinda, Colonel Qureshi said. Pakistan used a high-speed missile to target the Punjab airbase at 1.40 am, she added. Wing Commander Singh confirmed that India targeted Pakistani military assets in a retaliatory action and rejected Islamabad's claims of briging down India's S-400 air defence system. In a swift and calibrated response, Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes only at identified military targets. Pakistan has also engaged in a continued misinformation campaign, claiming destruction of the Indian S-400 system and airfields at Suratgarh and Sirsa. India unequivocally rejects these false claims, she said. Pakistans military bases in Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian were targeted through air-launched precision ammunition and fighter jets. The radar site in Pasrur and the aviation base in Sialkot were also hit with precision strikes. India ensured minimal collateral damage during these actions. Sialkot base was also targeted with precision weapons, Wing Commander Singh said. Pakistans use of civil flights as shields was highlighted during the briefing, with officials accusing Islamabad of taking cover behind civilian aircrafts. It is a matter of concern that taking the cover of civilian aircraft taking off from Lahore, Pakistan misused international air routes. So that they can hide their activities. Such tactics compelled Indian air defence system to act with great patience while ensuring civilian security, Col Qureshi said. India hits three Pakistan airbases in retaliatory strikes Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Misri reiterated Pakistans disinformation campaign, which falsely claimed the destruction of Indias S-400 system at Adhampur, the Brahmos Cruise Missile Base at Nagrota, and the Chandigarh Ordnance Depot. Wing Commander Singh also reported that at the Line of Control, drones and artillery are being used by the Pakistan Army to target areas such as Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, and Akhnoor. India has delivered a befitting response, causing significant damage to Pakistans military infrastructure, she said. Foreign Secretary Misri underscored that India does not wish to escalate the situation, provided Pakistan also behaves responsibly. Officials said Pakistans military continues to use multiple threat vectors, including long-range weapons, loitering munitions, and drones, to intrude into Indian airspace. They added that Pakistans air intrusion and harassment attacks targeted 26 locations along the LoC and IB, including Indian Air Force bases in Adhampur, Nalia, and Bhuj. Indias response has been swift and calibrated, with Pakistans technical infrastructure, command and control centres, radar positions in Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, Farkhor, and Sialkot being targeted with precision strikes, causing minimal collateral damage. Misri emphasised, We must not be misled by the tissue of lies being spread by Pakistan. Their consistent attempts to sow discord among communities in India continue to fail. He also confirmed that Additional Development Commissioner Rajkumar Thapa had been killed in a pakistani shelling in J&K's Rajouri on early Saturday morning. Terming Pakistans claims of Indian missiles targeting Shri Amritsar Sahib as ludicrous, Misri said, These attempts are doomed to fail. At the end of the briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri indicated that the situation remains fluid, adding, We are dealing with an evolving situation, and updates will follow.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister of State for Home Affairs of Gujarat said, The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the officers of all the forces on behalf of the citizens of Gujarat. Families of Pahalgam terror attack victims in Gujarat hail Operation Sindoor
AHMEDABAD: The Indian Armys airstrike on terror camps in Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack has brought a wave of relief and a sense of justice to grieving families in Gujarat. Relatives of those martyred in the brutal April 22 attack described the military action as a true tribute to their loved ones. Among them, Shitalben Kalthia, wife of Shailesh Himmatbhai Kalthia from Surat, who was killed in the Pahalgam firing, expressed profound gratitude, saying the government had delivered justice by targeting the terrorist hideouts. I had faith in the government. Today, by avenging the attack, my husband's soul will finally find peace, she said, adding that Pakistan is now being taught a long-overdue lesson. Recounting the horror of that afternoon, when terrorists opened fire indiscriminately on tourists around 2 p.m., Shitalben appealed to the Gujarat government to offer more support, just as Maharashtra did, ensuring that the children get the justice they deserve. Kajalben Parmar, wife of deceased Yatish Parmar and mother of 17-year-old Smit Parmar, echoed similar sentiments. Families of Pahalgam terrorist attack victims welcome Operation Sindoor Hailing the Prime Minister and the armed forces, she said, This action will bring peace to our shattered families. I am proud of my brothers in uniform who understand the pain of a sindoor being wiped away. They had fought to honour it. Standing united in their grief, Abhishek Parmar and Sawan Parmar, cousins of the deceased Smit Parmar, also welcomed the armys swift response. They emphasised that the strike was not just a military operation but a solemn tribute to the lives brutally cut short. Speaking to the media after India's precision strikes early Wednesday, Kajalben added, They (terrorists) took away our relatives, but they will not escape justice. Operation Sindoor is our hope. We are grateful to Prime Minister Modi for showing that terrorists will find no refuge. The airstrike, fueled by demand for justice, has brought solace to families determined that the sacrifice of their loved ones will never be forgotten.

23-year-old Surat teacher who eloped with 13-year-old student found 5 months preganant
AHMEDABAD: The case of a 23-year-old private tutor from Surat, Gujarat, who eloped with her 13-year-old student and was later found five months pregnant, has sent shockwaves across the country, raising urgent concerns about child safety in informal education settings. The scandal deepened after a medical examination revealed the womans pregnancy, and she claimed that the minor is the father, prompting authorities to order an immediate DNA test. The ordeal began on the afternoon of 25 April, when the teacher, previously a trusted figure in the boys life, vanished with the child in broad daylight, triggering panic and a swift search operation. CCTV footage from their residential society captured the teacher leaving with the boy, a sling bag over her shoulder, indicating premeditation. The teacher had been tutoring the boy for the past three years, and for the last year, he had become her only private student, a closeness that dangerously escalated over time. Police investigations revealed that the alleged sexual abuse took place at the tutors residence and later at a hotel in Vadodara while the pair was on the run. Before fleeing to Surat, the 13-year-old reportedly handed over a few of his clothes to the woman, who later purchased additional items for their escape. Surat teacher abducts 11-year-old student, caught 390 kilometres away after four-day manhunt The pair travelled across several cities-including Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Jaipur, and Vrindavan-before being apprehended near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border after a four-day manhunt. Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhagirath Gadhvi told The New Indian Express, A medical examination has revealed that the woman is five months pregnant. She has claimed that the minor is the father of the child. Based on her statement, we have ordered DNA testing. During questioning, both individuals admitted to having engaged in a physical relationship over several months. A formal case has been registered against the woman under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for kidnapping a minor, alongside serious charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexual exploitation. Senior officials have called the incident a grave breach of trust and power, warning of urgent gaps in protections across both formal and informal education spaces. Legal experts have also flagged the glaring ignorance around grooming tactics used by adults in positions of influence. The case remains under intense investigation, with further legal action pending the results of the court-ordered DNA test.

AHMEDABAD: In a massive demolition drive, allegedly targeting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the Muslim-majority area of Chandola Lake in Ahmedabad, civic authorities have so far razed 2000 huts and cleared around one lakh square metres of land. The authorities claimed that the houses belonged to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Late on the night of 28 April, a police convoy, accompanied by an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) team and 50 JCB machines, reached the site. Demolition work began at 7 a.m. the next morning. The AMC first razed around 150 illegal embankments at the farmhouse of Lalla Bihari, who is known for his involvement in illicit activities. Gujarats Minister of State for Home Affairs, Harsh Sanghvi, said, The area near Chandola Lake, where four illegal Bangladeshis associated with Al-Qaeda were caught, has been demolished. This area also saw the highest drug seizures and was a hub for illegal activities. Many illegal Bangladeshis have been arrested from here. We are committed to securing every inch of state government land by clearing it. Over 1.25 lakh square metres of land had been encroached upon by illegal Bangladeshis. More than 6500 people , mostly Muslims, were detained from the area on Tuesday and were accused of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. However, only 489 out of the detained have been confirmed by the authorities as lacking valid documents to prove Indian citizenship. Meanwhile, the Surat Police in coordination with central agencies, discovered Bangladeshi contact numbers and chat records on 50 mobile phones seized from suspected Bangladeshi immigrants. Over 100 people among the 150 people arrested from Surat have been confirmed by the authorities as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The suspects had reportedly entered India through agents and were residing illegally in Surat, police said. Bangladeshi numbers and chats were found on the mobile phones of 50 other suspects during the operation, prompting further investigation. A joint interrogation was conducted with Surat Police, the State and Central Intelligence Bureau (IB), where each suspect was questioned in depth, a police source said. All arrested individuals are currently held at the Bhikshuk Gruh in Surat, where authorities are thoroughly verifying their identities through document checks. The investigation has concluded, and agencies are now preparing detailed reports to be submitted to the Central and State Governments for further action. Surat Police officials confirmed that the operation is ongoing, with more action expected in the coming days.
Surat teacher abducts 11-year-old student, caught 390 kilometres away after four-day manhunt
AHMEDABAD: Surat City was left stunned after a 23-year-old teacher abducted her 11-year-old student and fled, but it was a hidden second mobile number that eventually led police to their dramatic capture 390 kilometres away, four days later. The incident unfolded on the afternoon of April 25 when the teacher, a trusted educator, vanished with the young boy in broad daylight, igniting panic and a citywide manhunt. Surat DCP Bhagirath Gadhvi told the media, After intensive investigation, the police arrested the female teacher and the student from Raigad on Tuesday. The investigation revealed that both were facing scolding from their families and ran away due to boredom. The police are continuing the investigation. Initially, investigators faced a dead end. The teacher had cunningly switched off her primary mobile phone shortly after fleeing with the boy from a railway station, erasing all digital trails. CCTV scans of the railway station and local bus stands proved futile, prompting police to suspect the duo had boarded a private bus. But just as the trail began to go cold, officers traced a second, previously unknown mobile number, still active, which turned the case around. With this critical lead, Pune Police deployed a four-member team in a race against time. Around 4:00 a.m., officers intercepted a bus near Shamlaji on the Rajasthan border and pulled the teacher and student off before they could vanish again. The rescue marked the end of a tense four-day pursuit during which the pair had travelled across 390 kilometres from Surat by bus, narrowly staying ahead of the law. Initial interrogation revealed that the teacher and the boy had known each other for three years, with both families frequently in contact. The boy, a fifth-grade student and son of a grocery merchant in Surats Pune area, had been attending her tuition classes, and for the past year, he had become her only private student, a closeness that gradually turned into mutual affection. Pressure from the teachers family to arrange her marriage, along with growing frustration over the boys academic struggles at home, reportedly set the stage for the desperate plan. The teacher is believed to have meticulously planned their escape and convinced the boy to flee with her. CCTV footage from their residential society captured the teacher leaving with the boy, a bag slung over her shoulder, suggesting premeditation. Police launched an intensive search operation, forming four dedicated teams. Further scrutiny of CCTV footage from April 25 and earlier revealed the teacher had arrived at Parvat Patiya in a rickshaw after taking the boy, where she purchased a trolley bag, presumably to carry more belongings. Investigators also discovered that the school bag she carried had been bought two days earlier, further confirming that the abduction was not impulsive. This disturbing case has since shocked the residents of Surat and sparked heated discussions across the city.
Crackdown on illegal Bangladeshis intensifies across Gujarat
AHMEDABAD: Surat police on Monday found 85 of 136 detained Bangladeshis living in Gujarat and also seized bogus Aadhaar and election cards. Many have entered India through agents charging Rs 10,000 Rs 15,000. Meanwhile, Vadodara police continued their third day of action, grilling over 250 suspects in Navayard. A special Crime Branch team has launched a parallel probe in Surat. Simultaneously, illegal power connections were snapped in Ahmedabads Chandola Lake area home to 143 Bangladeshis, now facing deportation. Adding to the sweep, 10 Bangladeshis were held in Morbi and 29 more in Bharuch, tightening the noose statewide. Tightening the net, a West Bengal IB team landed in Surat on Monday to join forces with Central IB and interrogate suspects, sources confirmed. The move comes after massive combing operations by Surat City Police across Varachha, Pune, and Saroli areas in Zone 1, where over 1,000 individuals including Bengali leaders were screened. During the sweep, 49 suspects were flagged 10 from Varachha and 39 from Pune based on document verification. However, after cross-checking with hometown records, all were released, even as the combing and search drive presses on. Surat Rural SP Hitesh Joysar told the media, So far, 245 suspected Bangladeshis have been detained and intensively interrogated by the Surat Rural Police. Of these, around 60 have been confirmed as Bangladeshi nationals. Deportation proceedings will be initiated after a thorough investigation. Police sources said. The arrested women were involved in casual labour and prostitution. They initially entered through West Bengal and later moved to Surat, where they created bogus documents. Most of them have been found to be in contact with Bangladesh. Those residing illegally will be deported. Vadodara police intensified their search operations for the third straight day, identifying 14 Bangladeshi nationals 9 by city police and 5 by railway authorities. Deportation proceedings are underway as per legal protocols. Meanwhile, 70 suspects are currently being grilled. In Ahmedabad, the crackdown has unearthed 143 Bangladeshis so far. Authorities have released 200 individuals after thorough verification, while 590 were found in possession of valid passports. Alarmingly, investigations revealed that some detainees had been deported up to three times. Officials also discovered that several individuals carried documents from Uttar Pradesh, yet could not even speak Hindi, raising serious questions about the authenticity of their papers.

Pahalgam terror attack: 'You protect VIPs, not us,' grieving widow blasts govt at victim's funeral
AHMEDABAD: Grief gave way to anger on Thursday as Shailesh Himmatbhai Kalthia, one of the three Gujaratis killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, was laid to rest in Surat. Kalthia, who was visiting Kashmir with his family, was among the victims of Tuesdays attack. His final rites drew a large crowd of mourners, including Union Minister and Gujarat BJP President C.R. Patil. Amid the emotional farewell, his wife Shitalben, who witnessed the attack and her husband's death, expressed her anguish and frustration. Overwhelmed by grief, she criticised the governments VIP culture, questioning the contrastin security and resources. Theres nothing there, no army, no police, no facilities. But when VIPs or big leaders visit, there are dozens of cars, helicopters flying overhead. Who pays for all that? Usthe common people, the taxpayers. So why is all that service only for the VIPs and not for regular folks like us? she asked. Crying, she recounted the event after the attack saying, I was shouting from the army camp below, begging them to go up and help, telling them people were injured. We somehow made it down, stumbling, falling... but no help ever reached the people who were still up there. So much happened up topwhy didnt the army below know anything? Mortal remains of victims of Pahalgam terror attack return to their homes Then she said something that really hit hard: If theyre just going to shoot all the Hindu brothers like that, then what is our security personnel even doing? There were thousands of security personnel in that area, and still, at the tourist spots, there were no soldiers, no police, not even basic first aid. Nothing. And then, to top it off, she said one of the security guys asked her, What are you even doing here, just walking around? Can you imagine that? Shitalben, visibly distraught, turned to those around her and questioned, Now you tell meif things were really like that up there, then why did you even let us go? Why did you let us go into that danger? She broke down as she said, The pillar of my house is gone. My support my strength hes gone. Just give me back my Shailesh, I dont want anything else. Nothing. And then she said something that really hit everyone: If our government only wants to protect its own, only wants to maintain facilities for itself, then finebut dont expect our votes anymore. We wont vote for this government again. Heaven on earth turned to hell: Families in grief, horror after Pahalgam terror attack At one point, Shitalben stretched her hand toward her son and, with her voice shaking, said, Tell me whats the future of these boys now? I had dreamsI wanted to make my son an engineer, my daughter a doctor. How am I supposed to do that now? She paused, holding back tears, and continued, All these years, we paid taxes. My husband worked hard, served this country, and you took taxes from his salary. And even when we went up there as tourists, we paid taxes again. You took everything from us. But when we needed help the most, there were no facilities, no support. I want justice, she said firmly. Not just for me, but for my childrens future. They shouldn't have to suffer. Then, turning to Patil, she said, You live here in Surat, right? So you tell me, what will you do for my husband? For us? Because hes not the only one There are so many innocent brothers out there, just young boys. What about them? When Patil tried to reassure her, saying that the government would help, Shitalben didnt hold back. She said, The government just keeps saying Well do it, well do it but theyve been saying that since the beginning. So much has already happened, and still, nothing has been done. Security forces ignoring threat by terrorist few days before attack led to Pahalgam tragedy, say sources She looked exhausted, her voice filled with frustration. They dont even know if the injured got proper treatment at the hospital or not. No one knows anything. And the next day? There was a curfew. Total shutdown. Roads were blocked off completely. Wherever you looked, there were groups of 100, 200 army men on the streets. She shook her head in disbelief. Where were they when we needed them? When innocent lives were being lost up there? As Shitalben poured her heart out, some of the leaders there tried to quiet her down, but she wasnt having it. She stood her ground and said sharply, No sir, you have to listen to me. Every time something terrible happens, thats when the government shows up to take pictures. Then they say, Army officers were there, police were there, leaders came. Whats the point of coming after everythings over? Pahalgam terror attack: A 'deliberate blow to Kashmir's identity and values...its fragile peace' Her voice rose with anger. And why why did an Security officer say, What are you doing here, just walking around? If even one person said that, why didnt anyone else there speak up? Why was no one held accountable? I dont just want justice for my husband and son, she said, her voice breaking but steady. I want justice for everyone who lost their lives. Every son should have a future. Every family deserves answers. C.R. Patil tried to respond gently, saying, Yes, yes, Shitalben, definitely But she cut him off. No, definitely not. We trusted you. Thats why we went there! As she tried to continue, others stepped in and tried to stop her from speaking. And then, with a heavy heart, she added, This place should be closed. Its supposed to be a tourist spot but look at whats happening.

Indore resident Samuel Nathaniel was shot dead after he failed to recite Kalma, says family
BHOPAL: A Christian family from Indore lost its head, 50-year-old Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) branch manager Sushil Nathaniel, in the terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday. Hailing from Jobat in western MPs Alirajpur district, Sushil was currently posted as the LIC branch manager in native Alirajpur district, his family comprising a teacher wife, Bank of Baroda-Surat employee daughter Akanksha, and student son Austin resided in Abhinandan Nagar area of Indore. Sushil, a native of Jobat in Alirajpur district, MP, was posted as the LIC branch manager in Alirajpur. His family including his wife (a teacher), daughter Akanksha (a bank employee in Surat), and son Austin (a student), lived in Indore's Abhinandan Nagar. Since Article 370 was abrogated in 2019, Sushil always wanted to be in Kashmir to experience with family the heaven on earth. He finally managed to be there with family, but hell never return alive now. His son Goldie told us over phone that the terrorists asked Sushil to kneel down and recite the Kalma, but he wasn't able to as he was a Christian, he saw his father being shot dead by the terrorists, Sushils cousin Sanjay Kumrawat, who also lives in Indore said on Wednesday. As per Nathaniel's familys sources in Indore, Sushil shielded his wife by hiding her behind a tree when the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. His 22-year-old daughter, Akanksha, however, sustained wounds in the leg, but is out of danger, following medical treatment. The middle-aged Sushil had reached Kashmir with wife and two children just two days before the Pahalgam attack. Since he was posted in Alirajpur district and Im posted in Indore, we were connected more over the phone. I last talked to him over the phone a month back and he was very excited about going to Kashmir. He wanted to be there since the abrogation of Article 370. The terrorists have shot dead those who werent from their faith. We stand firmly behind our government and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand the strongest possible action against the terrorists and their handlers, Kumrawat demanded. Back in Sushils parental home town, Jobat in Alirajpur district (165 km from Indore), the LIC branch managers youngest aunt Susan was seething in anger. He was posted in Alirajpur district as LIC branch manager for three years, I last talked to him over phone on April 20 when offered me Easter greetings, just a few hours before he left with family on vacation to Kashmir. For how long will we continue to lose our kids to the bullets of terrorists? I appeal to PM Modi that the way they (terrorists) shot our sons publicly, the same way the concerned terrorists should be shot dead on the spot, instead of nabbing them alive and waiting for the court verdict. Why should we show mercy, when they dont believe in it with us? According to the Indore district collector Ashish Singh, the body of Sushil Nathaniel will be flown to Indore in the afternoon. The funeral will take place in Indore only.

A seasoned strategist, Rupani has flexed his organisational prowess not just in Gujarat but also as the saffron partys point man in Punjab and other states. A party loyalist, he took over the reins of the state from Anandiben Patel in 2016 and steered the government for over five years an era marked by administrative continuity and political stability. Rupanis rise could recalibrate the partys national game plan, blending local connect with able leadership. Police dept set for massive shake-up The state police department is plagued by a mounting administrative logjam as those holding key posts, including the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), have been given additional charges. The result? A visible strain on law and order across the state. Nearly 15 SP-level officers are still awaiting official postings, and five recently promoted DIGs are in limbo. The Secretariat is abuzz with chatter that a long-overdue shake-up in police could soon turn into a full-blown transfer yatra. With crucial units like the IB and Crime Branch running on empty, the need for timely appointments is being felt more strongly than ever before. AICC Gujarat meet to focus on bolstering party organisation
NEW DELHI: As the Congress gears up for Tuesdays All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Ahmedabad, it will focus on strengthening the party organisationally and reviving its past glory. Tracing the partys long-standing connection with Gujarat, AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said that the session on April 8-9 will be the partys sixth in the state and the second post-independence. The session will be themed Nyaypath: Sankalp, Samarpan and Sangharsh, and more than 1,700 elected and co-opted AICC members will attend the main conclave on April 9. On April 8, the extended Congress Working Committee will meet at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhis party presidency and the 150th birth anniversary of Patel, both iconic figures born in Gujarat. It will also be the Congresss third session in Ahmedabad since its formation in 1885. In a post on X, Ramesh shared the official records of the past sessions held in Gujarat, which shed light on the historic presidential addresses at the sessions from Surendranath Banerjee in 1902, who talked about autocratic power being devoid of the elements of permanence, to Subhas Chandra Bose in 1938, who dismissed as entirely erroneous the argument that the Congress should wither away after independence. The Congress first met in Gujarat at Ahmedabad from December 23 to 26, 1902, under Banerjees presidency. In his long presidential address that touched upon several issues, Banerjee had said, All history proclaims the truth that autocratic power is devoid of the elements of permanence and that authority to be permanent must be planted deep in the affections of the people and derive its sustaining breath from the vitalising springs of popular enthusiasm. Despotic rule represents a stage of transition, the period of which should not be unnecessarily prolonged. But transition must give place to permanence. All signs point to the conclusion that the period of reconstruction has now arrived, he said. A total of 471 delegates attended the session. The second time the Congress met in Gujarat was at Surat from December 26 to 27, 1907, under the presidentship of Rash Behary Ghose. This session was historic as it witnessed the first split in the party and was marked by internal tensions among the moderate and extremist factions. Around 1,600 delegates attended it. At the 23rd session of the Congress at Surat, the moderate and extremist factions clashed, resulting in the partys first split. The third time the Congress met in Gujarat was again at Ahmedabad during December 27-28, 1921 under the presidentship of Hakim Ajmal Khan. Land of Gandhi and Patel This year marks the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhis party presidency and the 150th birth anniversary of Patel, both iconic figures born in Gujarat. It will also be the Congresss third session in Ahmedabad since its formation in 1885. First meet in Gujarat in 1902 Congress first met in Gujarat at Ahmedabad from Dec 23 to 26, 1902, under Surendranath Banerjees presidency. In his presidential address that touched upon several issues, Banerjee had said, All history proclaims the truth that autocratic power is devoid of elements of permanence and that authority to be permanent must be planted deep in the affections of the people.

Gujarats Jain monk Shantisagar gets 10 years for raping devotee under guise of Tantric rituals
AHMEDABAD: A sessions court in Surat on Friday convicted Jain monk Shantisagar in a rape case from eight years ago. The Additional Sessions Judges Court sentenced the monk, who has remained in jail since October 2017, to an 10 years in prison on Saturday. Only two and a half years remain till the completion of his sentence. Shantisagar was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old Vadodara devotee under the pretext of performing Tantric rituals at a Jain shrine in Timliyawad, Surat, in 2017; he was 49-years-old then. In addition to the survivor's testimony, medical reports and statements from 32 witnesses further strengthened the prosecution. According to the complaint, the 19-year-old survivor, originally from Madhya Pradesh and residing in Vadodara, visited the Jain Digambar temple in Timliyawad with her parents on October 1, 2017. The family had willingly traveled to Surat for the 'ceremony' after watching the monk's sermon. Upon reaching the temple, Shantisagar claimed that the ceremony was to be conducted overnight and made the family stay there. According to the survivor's police statement, Shaktisagar allegedly began the assault by trapping the family in a false ritual where they were made to sit in a sandalwood-drawn circle and chant mantras, forbidden from moving without the monk's permission. Shaktisagar repeatedly demanded the girl to send him intimate pictures to 'prepare.' Consider me your friend. Nude photos are necessary for the ceremony, he had said. Later, he arranged a hammock for the parents and a separate room for the brother. He lured the girl into separate room and threatened her to comply; Have you seen your parents happy? Then do as I say, or they will die, he said. The girl, a college student at that time, lost consciousness due to severe pain in her stomach and genitals after being raped. The survivor's decision to speak has brought to light the Shantisagar's sinister abuse of his apparent spiritual authority.
