Karnataka Launches India's First AI-Powered Skills Intelligence Unit, Plans District-Level Workforce Revolution in 90 Days

Karnataka is preparing for the next decade of AI-driven growth with two major initiatives: District Skill Groups and the creation of a Karnataka Strategic & Intelligence Unit, a first-of-its-kind AI-powered skills intelligence backbone for the state. This was announced by Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, CEO, Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) at the Quest 2 Learn Summit 2025 hosted by Quest Alliance. He was a part of a panel discussion which was focused on the theme Beyond the AI Hype: Building Radical Futures of Hope with Young People. From Right to Left - Madhavi Latha, Faculty, Samagra Shiksha, Andhra, Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, CEO, Karnataka digital Economy Mission, Kaberi MuDuli, Officer, Special Duty Govt. of Odisha The summit saw nearly 300 people including educators, policymakers, technologists, artists, researchers, civil society leaders, innovators, and young people come together to collectively explore the opportunities and future of AI in Education. Speaking during the summit titled, How is the government enabling desired AI futures for young people? , Mr. Gupta Shifted the focus from student centric discussions to millennials, Gen Z, industry leaders, and government stakeholders across different age groups. Each district will soon establish a District Skill Group, chaired by the District Collector and comprising industry, academia, students, and entrepreneurs. These groups will design one-year, district-specific skill development plans based on what the local economy actually needs , he was quoted as saying. Parallelly, the states six regional clusters outside Bengaluru are being strengthened through detailed vision documents, created after multi-stakeholder workshops involving educational institutions, incubators, accelerators, and student communities, outlining what each cluster aims to achieve by 203132. The second major initiative, the Karnataka Strategic & Intelligence Unit, will integrate APIs from universities, colleges, training institutions, and government databases. This unified dataset will be processed by an AI layer to identify emerging opportunities, sectoral gaps, and regional workforce needs. A small committee including industry leaders recently came together with the unit expected to go live in the next three to four months , Gupta added. Gupta noted that these reforms come at a time when Karnataka is witnessing a significant shift in the geography of work. Karnatakas youth are saying, I am not going to move from my place. I will serve from where I am. And companies are now going where the talent is , he said, emphasising how this shift is reshaping corporate hiring strategies and statewide economic planning. This decentralisation is already visible. The Come Back Tiger initiative in Mangalore encouraging tech professionals from the region to return home saw 3 ,000 registrations in under 48 hours, with 250 companies seeking local talent. Cities like Hubli now host more than 3,000 AI professionals serving clients in the US and Europe, demonstrating how innovation is no longer Bengaluru-centric, he stated. Karnataka attracts 200,000 young professionals every year and is home to 600,000 AI-skilled workers, 2,000+ AI startups, and 53 of Indias 110 unicorns, which collectively raised $2 billion last year. If the innovation ecosystem is not strong, companies know they cannot grow , Gupta said. We want to pursue the concept of co-create, collaborate, and co-innovate anyone with an idea can walk in and find mentors across industry and academia . He also highlighted the emergence of new infrastructure enabling this momentum: a world-class AI & Robotics Centre of Excellence and KEO, a personalized AI computer envisioned to place AI compute power in the hands of every learner . The panel also featured D Madhavi Latha, Faculty, SAMO Wing of Samagra Shiksha, Andhra Pradesh , who detailed how the states large-scale Personalised Adaptive Learning (PAL) programme and Atal Tinkering Labs are transforming learning outcomes through adaptive content, and student-led innovation. Kaberi Muduli, OAS, Officer on Special Duty, Panchasakha Sikhya Setu Sangathan, Govt of Odisha outlined how the state has already introduced a 14-chapter AI curriculum in Class 10, alongside classroom tools like Khanmigo, which strengthen critical thinking and support teachers in delivering AI-enabled, local-language learning. The panel was moderated by Manoj Kothari, CEO and Chief Strategist, Turian Labs. Mr Aakash Sethi, The CEO of Quest Alliance , which works with the government education and skilling ecosystems to equip young people with future-ready skills they need to succeed in their careers, said: We undertake new learning and re-skilling in the AI era in Government schools by embedding future skills and career exploration in school curricula and pedagogy. We also work with Technical and Vocational Skilling Institutes, enabling them to prepare confident, informed, and career-ready young graduates, facilitating their transition into the world of work.

KANNUR: Like every Christmas, Malabar Bakery near Kannur Market continues to uphold a cherished tradition of preparing its classic icing plum cake. Serving the people of Kannur for the past 115 years, the bakery is a symbol of nostalgia and trust. Even today, the original cake that has delighted customers for generations is baked and sold, garnering special demand during the Christmas season. In its early days, the bakery supplied products to the military, nearby convents, and surrounding areas. Recognised as the first bakery in Kannur district, Malabar Bakery soon expanded its reach, exporting its products to places such as Hyderabad, Mangalore, and Madras, and several other regions. In 1928, the business was taken over by Nakkady Madhavan, and today, the bakery is run by the third generation of the family, with N M Swaroopkumar at the helm, continuing the legacy. As November approaches each year, we receive inquiries from various places, even from abroad, about our cakes. While many from the older generation continue to return for the familiar taste they grew up with, members of the younger generation are also drawn to the shop, eager to experience the timeless flavour that has defined Malabar Bakery for more than a century. In December, Malabar Bakery fills its shelves with Christmas icing plum cakes and continues to do so till mid-January. The cake is baked without infusing rum which is a regular query of customers. MAHE inaugurates ICMR-MAHE Centre for Advanced Research with Rs. 12.84 crore grant The inauguration was honoured by Dr Ashoo Grover, Scientist G and Head, Division of Delivery Research, ICMR, who was the Chief Guest, and Dr Roopa Shivashankar, Scientist E (Medical), Division of Delivery Research, ICMR, as the Guest of Honour. The event was presided over by Dr H. S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, MAHE, and organised by Dr Sharath K. Rao, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Health Sciences), MAHE. Dr Anil K. Bhat, Dean of KMC Manipal, and Dr Cherian Varghese, Director of the Prasanna School of Public Health, participated in this inauguration. In his address, Dr Ballal emphasised that the partnership between ICMR and MAHE represents he highest level of national recognition for MAHE's research culture and reflects the University's enduring commitment to science that heals and research that transforms. Dr Sharath K Rao outlined the roadmap for health research at MAHE. The Centre for Advanced Research (CAR) aims to fill a vital gap in India's healthcare system-the need for ethical, compassionate, and evidence-based care for patients with advanced and terminal illnesses admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The centre will develop and assess a Multifaceted Comprehensive Appropriate Care Package (MCACP) that incorporates palliative care principles within critical care environments. This initiative builds on MAHE's pioneering BLUE MAPLE framework, created and implemented at Kasturba Hospital and KMC Manipal, which has shaped national end-of-life care standards. The CAR will now expand this work nationwide, establishing a multi-centre collaborative network comprising ten clinical centres and seven technical partners. The Centre's work spans multiple disciplines-medicine, nursing, bioethics, health economics, law, and public health-reflecting MAHE's belief in the One Health-One Humanity approach to research and innovation. By co-developing and testing a nationally scalable model of appropriate care for ICU patients with advanced illness, the CAR aims to influence policy, improve health-system responsiveness, and generate evidence that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MAHE has a longstanding legacy of promoting research, innovation, and translational impact. The establishment of the ICMR-MAHE CAR strengthens MAHE's position as a leading contributor to India's health-research ecosystem. It reaffirms its mission to integrate science, ethics, and empathy in healthcare delivery. The Centre for Advanced Research will serve as a national and global reference point for ICU and palliative-care research, setting new benchmarks for interdisciplinary and implementation science in India. Pilots body asks ministry for judicial probe into Ahmedabad plane crash

NEW DELHI: The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has written to the Civil Aviation Ministry demanding a judicial probe into the June 12 Air India flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 260 lives. The federation also plans to file a PIL in this connection in the Supreme Court shortly. It is demanding a court of inquiry (judicial probe) under Rule 12 of the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017. We will also be moving the Supreme Court early next week with a similar request, a source told this reporter. The response follows the Supreme Courts castigation of the Aircraft Accidents Investigation Bureau (AIIB) on Monday for suggesting that pilot error caused the crash in its preliminary report submitted a month later (July 12). The bench was responding to a plea by an NGO, Safety Matters Foundation, seeking an independent probe. The letter, dated September 22, is signed by the president of the FIP, which represents over 5,000 professional pilots and aviation professionals. It suggested that the probe panel can be on the lines of the Court of Inquiry set up after the Mangalore accident on May 22, 2010, involving an Air India Express flight, which claimed 158 lives. A Presiding Officer which must be a retired Judge of the Supreme Court and a panel of unimpeachable, independent experts with knowledge of operational, aircraft maintenance, avionics and flight control systems, it said. The letter to the ministry recalls that it had made a preliminary request in the aftermath of the accident for inclusion of subject-matter experts and a judicial inquiry. This letter serves as a formal and urgent escalation of that position in light of grave and alarming developments, it said. It charged that the actions by the AAIB have violated statutory rules and ethical norms. The letter alleged that a delegation of the AAIB had made an unsolicited visit to the residence of Pushkar Raj Sabharwal, the 91-year-old bereaved father of deceased Pilot-in-Command Capt Sumeet Sabharwal, under the guise of offering condolences.
