US to have 80 per cent of global computing power by 2028: Bessent
Digital Desk | Washington, Sep 9 (IANS) The United States will account for 80 per cent of global computing power by 2028, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said, casting artificial intelligence as a critical strategic contest with China. Bessent made the projection during a wide-ranging conversation at SMU's Cox School of Business in Dallas. He said the US held half of global computing capacity in 2025 and was rapidly extending that lead. In 2025, the US had 50 per cent of global computing power. By 2028, we're going to have 80 per cent of global computing power, he said. Asked how much China would have, Bessent replied: China will be 15, and the rest of the world will be the rest of the world. Bessent argued that America's AI advantage had emerged through private-sector innovation rather than state direction. Why do we have this big lead in AI? And it's all been completely organic in AI, he said. The Chinese have their model. They have central planning on AI, which will never work. He said the US needed to protect that advantage. We are ahead of the Chinese. We have to stay ahead because if we get behind, nothing else matters. The Treasury secretary also linked the AI race to Washington's wider economic relationship with Beijing. I managed the China relationship for the US. And I say we don't want to decouple, but we have to de-risk, he said. Bessent said the Covid-era disruption had shown the danger of depending on overseas supply chains. He identified semiconductors, medicines and critical minerals as strategic industries that should be brought back to the US for national security reasons. He said Washington had included private companies in a G20 session on AI, describing it as the first such move under the US presidency. Manufacturing, pharmaceutical and medical technology executives explained how they were using AI in supply chains and customer services, he said. Bessent offered a blunt assessment of Europe's position in the competition. Asked what was happening there in AI, he answered: Nothing. He said Europe had no large cloud company comparable to Microsoft, Amazon or Google in the US, or Alibaba and Tencent in China. He blamed risk aversion and a regulatory-first approach for the gap. Bessent also warned students that AI proficiency was becoming an employment test. AI is probably not going to take your job. Someone who knows how to use AI will take your job, he said. Computing power, often called compute, covers the chips, data centres and energy infrastructure used to train and operate AI systems. Access to it has become a key measure of national and corporate capacity in advanced artificial intelligence.

Russias Drone Killer Unveiled: Putin Threatens Ukraine With Pantsir-SMD-E; Counters UAV Swarm
Russia has showcased the Pantsir-SMD-E, a missile-only air-defence system developed to protect military bases, command centres and critical infrastructure against mass drone attacks. Unlike earlier Pantsir variants, the SMD-E removes its twin cannons to accommodate a substantially larger interceptor magazine. Russian specifications say it can carry 12 standard missiles or as many as 48 compact TKB-1055 anti-drone interceptors. The system is designed to defeat saturation tactics in which waves of inexpensive UAVs exhaust defensive ammunition before larger weapons attack. However, the footage presented at Egypts El Alamein International Airshow demonstrates manufacturer claimsnot independently verified performance against a coordinated swarm under battlefield and electronic-warfare conditions.

Your leadership does what it says: Luxembourg FM Bettel lauds India's efficiency
New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Xavier Bettel on Monday stressed the importance of maintaining rusted and honest relations with India, while also praising the leadership for its efficiency in delivering commitments. Addressing a joint press conference with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, Bettel reflected on his 13 years in government, saying Luxembourg and India had made significant efforts to strengthen their relationship over the years. And as you said just before, you can't choose your neighbours, but you can choose your friends. And so to be here is also part of this friendship. In my 13th year now in government, I think we did a lot to deepen the relations between both countries, he stated. Bettel also recalled his earlier ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Luxembourg's Prime Minister and expressed appreciation for Indian leadership in promoting dialogue and building bridges. I was very lucky also to have good relations before, when I was Prime Minister, with your Prime Minister... Being a democracy is not very common nowadays, and I really would love to say thank you to the Indian leadership for that, he mentioned. He also lauded PM Modi's efficiency in delivering on political commitments, recalling India's response to joint projects with Luxembourg during the Covid pandemic. What I like about you and Prime Minister Modi is that when you say something, you do it also, which is something that is much appreciated...I saw it during the Covid period when we had common projects. Your Prime Minister said, 'We are going to do it'. Usually, when we say that in Europe, it's the start of discussions to see how we can fulfil what the promise is. In India, this was the start but also the end because the next day everything was done. So I was impressed also by the efficiency of the political statements that you do, said the Luxembourg Foreign Minister. Bettel also extended his greetings to India on the country's 80th Independence Day, celebrated last month. While concluding, Bettel thanked India for its friendship and leadership while emphasising the significance of a pragmatic approach to resolving international conflicts and building bridges between countries. Some of the countries do not understand that when you want to build bridges, it is important to be pragmatic. And it's not being against someone; it is in favour of people. And this is what I really hope that you will be able to be as efficient as you were also in the past in all these conflicts that we have nowadays, he noted.
