Theatre inspections reveal alarming violations across Andhra Pradesh

VIJAYAWADA: In Kakinada district, shockingly, one theatre failed to meet 12 mandatory norms, while two other theatres failed to meet 11 and 10 norms respectively. RDO S Malli Babu, who led inspections at 11 theatres including those in Pithapuram, Samalkot, and Kakinada Urban, reported serious violations including expired fire extinguishers, lack of fire safety, missing exit signage, and unsanitary conditions. In one theatre, food quality failed to meet FSSAI standards, with cooking oil being reused repeatedly without replacement. Another was found selling tea at Rs 110, coffee at Rs 120, and Coke (650 ml) at Rs 210, without FSSAI certification and no provision of drinking water. Building plans were unavailable in several cases, and automatic fire suppression systems were missing. As part of a statewide drive ordered by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, revenue and police officials have launched extensive inspections of cinema theatres across the state, focusing on safety, hygiene, pricing, and compliance with government norms. In Vijayawada, officials inspected 36 theatres, including prominent multiplexes like PVP, Trendset, INOX, and Lila. Of these, 28 were operational, 22 in urban areas and six in Ibrahimpatnam and Mylavaram. Speaking to TNIE, RDO Kavuri Chaitanya said inspections focused on fire safety, disaster preparedness, parking, and maintenance. Reports will be submitted to district collectors shortly. In East Godavari, Joint Collector S Chinna Ramudu led a multi-departmental team to inspect Geetha, Apsara, Shyamala, and Swamy theatres in Rajahmundry. Checks included fire safety certification, electrical wiring, ticketing, hygiene, and water availability. Officials verify fire safety and food pricing In Vizianagaram, Joint Collector Sedhu Madhavan, along with RDO Savaramma conducted surprise checks at Leela Mahal and other theatres. They reviewed seating, lighting, sanitation, parking and canteen conditions. Fire safety and food pricing were verified by interacting with the audience. We acted on the directions of higher officials, and will soon file a report, said Madhavan. In Tanuku, Municipal Commissioner T Ram Kumar and Tahsildar DVS Ashok Varma instructed theatre managements to ensure cleanliness and transparency in pricing. In response to theatre bandh threat, concerns were raised over parking, snacks prices, and quality standards. Pawan Kalyan ordered inspections to ensure theatres follow norms. With over 1,300 theatres in the state, the government is tightening oversight to uphold safety and service standards for cinema-goers.

Visakhapatnam Central Jail faces severe overcrowding amid surge in ganja smuggling cases

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Central Jail has the largest number of overcrowded prisoners in Andhra Pradesh and is facing overcrowding challenges. A large number of blocks in the prison have been occupied by smugglers who were caught while trying to transport ganja from various parts of North AP. Speaking to TNIE, Superintendent of Visakhapatnam Central Prison (SCP) M Mahesh Babu emphasised that the Visakhapatnam Central Jail facility was designed to accommodate 900 inmates, including 80 female prisoners. The jail has around 1,830 prisoners, far exceeding its capacity. Among the inmates, 1,548 are on remand, and the number of female prisoners has slightly increased to 82. At present, there are 185 male lifers and no female lifers in the jail. Around 1,000 prisoners have been booked under the NDPS Act, specifically for ganja-related cases, Mahesh Babu added. He stated that over the past few months, as many as 200 first-time offenders have been in the jail, highlighting an increase in crime reporting and legal actions. As a temporary relief measure, 175 prisoners have been transferred to Rajahmundry Central Prison, he added. He said, Around 60% of prisoners are below the age of 32, raising concerns about the growing involvement of young individuals in criminal activities. He mentioned that around 300 prisoners from other states were also present, in the past few years, bail for ganja-related cases was typically granted after one month, but currently, with the full implementation of the relevant Acts, the process now takes between one to six months, depending on the severity of the crime. Strict measures have been enforced to minimize the illegal transportation of ganja. Mahesh emphasised that strict security measures and thorough checks have been implemented within the jail premises, with regular inspections being conducted to ensure safety. He said, Out of 30 acres, till now we have dug around 5 acres in the jail premises, where we found some mobile phones recently. We will dig the total 30 acres. Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to rehabilitate prisoners through skill development programmes. He highlighted that the prison administration is organising skill development sessions aimed at helping inmates develop useful skills that may assist them in reintegrating into society after their release.

Zero waste should be our goal: CM Chandrababu Naidu

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has emphasised the need for transforming Andhra Pradeshs villages into clean and sustainable hubs through effective waste management. Zero waste should be our goal. Every panchayat should implement an action plan to achieve it, he said. During a review meeting with officials at the State Secretariat on Thursday, he directed them to intensify efforts to ensure daily collection of waste from households, convert wet waste into compost, and hand over dry waste to agencies for processing. Naidu instructed the officials to invite tenders next month to engage agencies for dry waste collection, and to entrust DWCRA (Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas) groups with managing wet waste, converting it into compost locally. He proposed the establishment of 52 waste management clusters across the State, with two per district, to grade and sell waste to agencies or transport it for further processing. No panchayat should dump waste on the roadside, he asserted. The Chief Minister advocated for a Circular Economy Policy to streamline waste management, suggesting a study of Rajasthans model, and the use of electric vehicles for waste collection. He directed the Panchayat Raj Department to coordinate with the Swachh Andhra Pradesh initiative, and the Pollution Control Board in this regard. Naidu also emphasised the need for studying agricultural and allied sector waste to support the circular economy. To incentivise progress, he announced awards for panchayats and individuals excelling in waste management, to be presented on October 2, 2025, with a goal to fully streamline the system by October 2, 2026. The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of Waste-to-Energy plants being set up in Nellore, Rajahmundry, Kadapa and Kurnool, directing the officials to ensure timely completion.
