NCP (SP) aligning with Ajit Pawar's NCP would be like joining hands with BJP: Sena (UBT) leader Raut

MUMBAI: The NCP (SP) forging an alliance with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP for the Pune Municipal Corporation polls would be akin to joining hands with the BJP, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said on Thursday. Talking to reporters, Raut said he will meet NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar and hold discussions on various issues, including any understanding between the two rival factions for the Pune civic body polls. Having an alliance with Ajit Pawar would be akin to joining hands with the BJP. Ajit Pawar is an agent of the BJP, and any truck with him will mean strengthening the BJP, Raut said in response to a question. The NCP and NCP (SP) have held talks about joining hands for the Pune Municipal Corporation elections. Earlier this week, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said that the BJP and the NCP won't have an alliance in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations, and there will be a friendly fight between the two Mahayuti allies. Besides the BJP and NCP, the ruling Mahayuti also has the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, as a constituent. Raut said Pawar is positive about Uddhav Thackeray's Sena (UBT) and the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena coming together for the civic body polls. He said the NCP (SP) will ally with the Sena (UBT) and MNS in Nashik and Thane. Raut further claimed that Shiv Sena's udget for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls was about Rs 10,000 crore and that the party would give Rs 10 crore to each candidate, but did not provide any details to back the claim. Elections to the 29 municipal corporations in the state will take place on January 15, and the counting will be held a day later. Nashik district court convicts NCP minister Manikrao Kokate in cheating and fraud case

MUMBAI: The NCP minister Manikrao Kokate is in trouble after the Nashik District Session court upheld the order of the First Class court on Tuesday, confirming the two years imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 for falsifying the income proof documents. The minister falsified the documents to get two swanky apartments in the Chief Ministers 10 per cent housing quota. The verdict of the district court is a big setback for Minister Kokate. If Kokate did not get respite by the Bombay High Court immediately, then he would have to lose his ministerial berth and would also have to face two years imprisonment. The NCP minister would likely approach the Bombay High Court to protect himself from disqualification as a member of the Maharashtra Assembly. Kokate was convicted in connection with the illegal acquisition of two flats under the Chief Ministers discretionary quota. Kokate and his brother Sunil Kokate were convicted for their offences punishable under Sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 474 (possession of forged documents) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention). The case against the Kokate was registered in 1995 on the complaint of former minister, late T S Dighole. As per the prosecution complaint, Kokate and his brother were allotted two flats meant for the Low Income Group (LIG) on College Road in Yeolakar Mala area under the Chief Minister's 10 per cent discretionary quota. To be eligible, they made false claims of belonging to the LIG category and not owning a house in the city. A case of cheating, forgery and other offences under the then Indian Penal Code was registered against the Kokate brothers and two others at Sarkarwada police station in Nashik. NCP MLA Kokate might face disqualification as per the mandate in the Representation of the People Act, 1951, related to elections to the Parliament and state legislature and qualifications and disqualifications for membership of such houses. As per Section 8 (3) of the said Act, a person convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years shall be disqualified from the date of such conviction and shall continue to be disqualified for a further period of six years since his release.

Maha minister asks why environmentalists oppose tree felling for Kumbh but not goat sacrifices on Eid

MUMBAI: Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Nitesh Rane on Thursday wondered why environmentalists opposing the felling of trees in Nashik ahead of Kumbh Mela were never seen opposing the slaughter of goats on Eid. Rane's remarks came amid protests by civil society members against the Nashik civic body's plan to cut down more than 1,700 trees in the Tapovan area to build a 'Sadhu Gram' (settlement for religious leaders) ahead of the Kumbh Mela, which will begin in October 2026. The environmental activists who oppose tree felling at Tapovan in Nashik, were never seen opposing goat sacrifice. All religions equal? Rane said in a post on X. Meanwhile, the Opposition NCP (SP) Lok Sabha member from Dindori in Nashik district, Bhaskar Bhagare, expressed disappointment over the proposed tree felling. We are already witnessing erratic rains, flooding and extreme weather conditions in the last few years. In such a situation, cutting down so many trees is unacceptable, he said, adding that he has written to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on the issue. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the government would ensure no harm to the environment. He said some people are trying to create hurdles for the Nashik Kumbh Mela, while certain individuals have suddenly become environmentalists for political reasons. Notably, actor Sayaji Shinde, a member of the Deputy CM Ajit Pawars NCP, which is part of the ruling coalition, has said he would oppose the government if it were adamant on removing the trees. Pawar on Wednesday called for a conciliatory approach to resolve the issue, saying that maintaining environmental balance is as important as development. Local Hindu organisations along with political parties have also joined the protests against the planned tree felling in the Tapovan area of Nashik. Activists of the Hindu Mahasabha recited the Hanuman Chalisa in Tapovan a few days back, while the supporters of some other Hindu organisations pasted posters with the slogan `Jai Shriram, Jai Hanuman' on the trees marked for removal by the Nashik Municipal Corporation. Some of them also invoked the local belief that Lord Ram and Sita lived in Tapovan during their exile, and called for protecting the trees for the sake of religious sentiments. School children staged demonstrations in Tapovan on Wednesday, carrying placards with pro-conservation messages. Local leaders and workers of the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also joined the agitation.

Environmental balance as important as development: Ajit Pawar on Nashik tree-felling row

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday called for a conciliatory approach to resolve the issue of tree felling in Nashik city for Kumbh Mela, saying that maintaining environmental balance is as important as development. Civil society members are up in arms against the Nashik civic body's reported plan to cut down more than 1700 trees in the Tapovan area to build a 'Sadhu Gram' for the visiting religious leaders ahead of Kumbh Mela which will begin in October 2026. Actor Sayaji Shinde, a member of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, which is part of the ruling coalition, has also said he would oppose the government if it was adamant on removing the trees. Backing Shinde's stand against deforestation, Pawar, in a statement, said, If trees survive, the next generation will survive. Along with development, maintaining environmental balance is equally important. The deputy CM further said the issue of tree cutting in Tapovan must be resolved amicably while ensuring that environmental concerns are not overlooked. The stand taken by Sayaji Shinde on the issue was in the larger interest of environmental protection, Pawar said, stressing that development should not come at the cost of ecological balance. Maintaining a balance between development and the environment is the need of the hour. We must remember that only if we protect the environment will the next generation remain safe, the NCP chief said. He urged all stakeholders to adopt a constructive approach and arrive at a solution that safeguards both developmental needs and ecological well-being. Facing vociferous protests against the planned felling of trees for Kumbh Mela, Nashik Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri on Tuesday said that over 60 per cent of the more than 1,700 surveyed trees will be spared. No tree that stood on the land in 2015, when the last Kumbh Mela was held in Nashik, will be removed, she told PTI. The old, indigenous trees will be spared, she added.

Violence, clashes reported in first phase of Maharashtra local body polls

The first phase of polling for 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra on Tuesday was marred by violence, clashes and allegations of malpractice across several districts, police said. Despite the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP being allies at the state level, their workers fought each other in multiple places, with some local units even tying up with Opposition parties. Violent incidents were reported from Mahad (Raigad), Gevrai (Beed), Muktai Nagar (Jalgaon), Bhor (Pune), Mhaswad (Satara), Jat (Sangli), Hingoli, Buldhana, Dahanu (Thane) and Shahada (Nandurbar). In Mahad, supporters of Vikas Gogawale, son of Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale and NCPs Sushant Jabre clashed in the Nave Nagar area, where one person was seen brandishing a firearm. Stone pelting erupted in Gevrai, with vehicles vandalised near a BJP leaders residence, prompting police to resort to lathi-charge. Two bogus voters were detained in Buldhana. A major controversy surfaced in Hingoli after a video showed Shiv Sena MLA Santosh Bangar entering a polling booth, looking into the voting compartment as a woman cast her ballot and speaking to her. A case has been registered and officials have launched a probe. BJP workers and police also faced off in Jat, Sangli. Technical issues added to voters frustration, with at least four EVMs failing in Nandurbar and similar complaints emerging from Amaravati, Badlapur, Nanded, Jalgaon, Yavatmal, Bhokardan and Akluj. Suspended government doctor, aides involved in inter-state fake currency notes racket, arrested in Bhopal

BHOPAL:After being on the run for more than three weeks, the suspended government doctor, the alleged mastermind of the recently busted inter-state fake Indian currency notes (FICN) racket, has been arrested in Madhya Pradesh's capital, Bhopal. Acting on specific inputs, cops from the special investigation team (SIT) of Khandwa district police, raided a house in Bhopals Bagmugaliya area and arrested Dr Prateek Navlakhe along with his two aides. While the suspended government doctor, 43-year-old Prateek Navlakhe, hails from southwestern MPs Burhanpur district, the two other men arrested from the rented house on Sunday evening have been identified as 35-year-old Gopal alias Rahul (resident of MPs Harda district) and 43-year-old Dinesh Gore (who hails from Amravati-Maharashtra). Suspended MP doctor emerges as mastermind in inter-state fake currency racket busted in Maharashtra Dinesh Gore is the acting principal of a government school in Maharashtra, while Rahul is a property broker. FICN totalling Rs 25,000, nine cell-phones, a laptop, 32 ATM cards, 15 bank cheque books, a dryer machine and other incriminating material have been seized from the arrested trio, Khandwa district police superintendent Manoj Rai said on Monday. With this recent action, FICNs totalling over Rs 30 lakh have so far been seized by the Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh police teams from the possession of the seven arrested members of the inter-state racket and their whereabouts since October 30. Importantly, the alleged inter-state FICN racket was busted in Malegaon town of Maharashtras Nashik district on October 30 following the arrest of a Muslim cleric, Maulana Zuber and his key aide, Nazir. The Malegaon cops had seized from the duo, Rs 10 lakhs FICN, which they were to route to various parts of the western state. With Zubair being the Imam of a mosque located in Pethia village of southwestern MPs Khandwa district, the Khandwa district police raided the room where he stayed in the Imambara in Pethia village and recovered Rs 19.78 lakh FICN on November 2. An SIT was subsequently formed by the Khandwa district police superintendent into the entire case, and the two men, including Maulana Zubair, arrested in Malegaon town on October 30, were later brought to Khandwa (MP) for questioning. It was their questioning that confirmed the direction of the police investigation, about the suspended government doctor Pradeep Navlakhe being the mastermind of the inter-state racket. Navlakhes arrest from Bhopal is a breakthrough for us in the case, as he has emerged as the real mastermind of the racket. The laptop seized from the rented house in Bhopal contains details and designs of the FICNs, SP-Khandwa district Manoj Rai said. As per sources associated with the ongoing police probe, investigations strongly suggest many more Maharashtra links in the racket, including some major links in the Vidarbha region. Probe till now suggests that Dr Navlakhe was into FICNs for 4-5 months. Before that, he had also tried his hand at FICN, but failed to succeed completely. Importantly, back in 2022, Navlakhe (who was posted at the Burhanpur district hospital) was accused of opening an account in a private bank in the name of the hospital's peon and then parked around Rs 24 lakh. The account was closed after withdrawing the money. In 2022, Dr Navlakhe was suspended after he sold the hospitals equipment worth Rs 25 lakh as scrap. He was also suspected to be involved in hawala business, cricket betting and human trafficking. The suspended doctor met Mohd Zubair while being lodged in Khandwa jail. Zubair was lodged there in multiple cases of robbery and investment fraud. The Khandwa polices SIT suspect that it was at the Khandwa jail that Navlakhe convinced Zubair to become part of his network of FICN supply racket. Dr Navlakhe had tried his luck with FICN printing in the past and is accused of two to three cases of counterfeit Indian currency notes in Jalgaon and Bhusawal in Maharashtra. Barring Dr Navlakhe, the six others arrested in the case so far were possibly working as agents who searched prospective buyers of the fake currency notes and then supplied them to the customers. For every Rs one lakh, the racket got Rs 30,000 in authentic currency notes from the customers, then distributed to operatives. Ongoing investigations suggest that the finest quality wire used in the FICNs was sourced from China, while the paper was sourced from Maharashtras Vidarbha region. On October 30, when Maulana Zubair, along with an aide, was arrested with Rs 10 FICN in Malegaon (Maharashtra), Dr Navlakhe was present in Pune. With the help of his girlfriend, Dr Navlakhe first came to Bhopal via Burhanpur and later went into hiding in Haridwar (Uttarakhand), before returning and hiding in the rented flat with Dinesh Gores help. While investigations till now have revealed that the income generated from the FICN business was parked by Dr Navlakhe in his girlfriends bank account, the seizure of 32 ATM cards and 15 bank cheque books strongly suggests that the rackets mastermind was also parking alleged crime money in mule accounts.

MVA prepared to fight upcoming local body polls together; no proposal from MNS for alliance

MUMBAI: The Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) on Monday announced the formation of a state-level coordination committee to steer preparations for contesting the upcoming elections to local bodies together. The allies clarified that no proposal has been received regarding an alliance with the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to join the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). No such proposal has come before the Maha Vikas Aghadi so far regarding joining hands with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. If such a proposal comes, we will sit together, discuss it, and take a decision, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) state unit president Shashikant Shinde said while addressing a joint press conference after a key MVA meeting. He said the question of holding talks with the MNS didn't arise in the absence of a formal proposal. Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab, and Shinde briefed reporters on the discussions, stating that the new coordination committee will include representatives from each of the alliance partners. Sapkal said the panel would be tasked with easing communication, resolving differences, and addressing any candidate-related issues ahead of the polls. The coordination committee will look into the nitty-gritty of the work as elections are being held across the state. The committee will discuss and coordinate with party workers and find an amicable solution, he said. The Congress leader stated that the committee would be authorised to take decisions whenever required and would serve as a platform to resolve disputes. We discussed in detail how to face the upcoming elections. If there are any differences or discussions needed regarding candidates, this coordination committee will handle them, Sapkal added. He noted that the MVA partners had jointly contested the last two major elections and were prepared to fight the upcoming polls together under both the MVA and the INDI bloc framework. A section in the Congress is divided over taking the MNS on board, given Raj Thackeray's aggressive stance against north-Indian migrants and his sons-of-the-soil brand of politics, according to sources. A day earlier, senior Congress leaders Vijay Wadettiwar and Sapkal made contradictory statements regarding an alliance with the MNS for the upcoming elections, scheduled for December. Wadettiwar had said the Congress would go solo in the Mumbai civic elections, while supporting his party colleagues in Nashik if they want to align with MNS. He said district units had been authorised to take decisions as per the local situation, a statement not in consonance with Sapkal. The trigger was an announcement made by an MNS leader who said the Raj Thackeray-led party had finalised an alliance with the Maha Vikas Aghadi for local body polls in Nashik. Sapkal said show-cause notices would be issued to functionaries of Congress in Nashik for attending a meeting regarding an alliance with the Raj Thackeray-led party.

Muslim women vote in large numbers in first phase of Bihar polls after SIR exercise

PATNA/SAHEBGANJ/HAJIPUR: The first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections witnessed a high turnout of Muslim women voters, a trend that observers said underscored the impact of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Many women, especially from the Muslim community, returned to Bihar from other states where they live with their families to ensure their names remained valid on the electoral rolls and to cast their votes. Their concerns stemmed from the fear that prolonged absence from the state could lead to their names being deleted or duplicated elsewhere. Several voters said they had either applied to transfer their names from rolls in other states or requested deletion there to remain registered in Bihar. Political analysts in Patna noted that the surge in turnout reflected growing voter awareness following the SIR exercise, which reportedly saw the deletion of thousands of names across communities. Sabina Khatoon, 45, accompanied by her mother-in-law, Rubia, 57, and daughter Baby, 20, travelled from Nashik in Maharashtra to vote in Patna. SIR made us realise the importance of ensuring our names remain valid. In our mohalla, Phulwarisharif, over two dozen Muslim women have returned from Gujarat, Kolkata and Mumbai just to vote, she said, stressing that no Indian should miss the opportunity to participate in elections. Muslim-majority areas recorded significantly higher female voter participation compared with the 2020 Assembly polls. According to social activist Md Naqib from Sahebganj in Muzaffarpur, the increase was even more visible in rural regions, where the SIR drive had encouraged women from minority and other communities to become more conscious not only about voting but also about obtaining essential documents like birth certificates for their children. In Hajipur, officials estimated that the turnout of Muslim women rose by over 30% from the previous election. Sofia, a homemaker from Patna, said she spent Rs 10,000 travelling from Kolkata with her family to vote. The first phase thus saw a strong display of electoral awareness among women, particularly in districts affected by high male migration.

Uncertainty dogs delivery of upgraded LCA Mk1A fighter to IAF amid extension of deadline to March 2026

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force's plans to induct the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A are shrouded in uncertainty at a time when its combat fighters are dwindling fast. On October 17, when the LCA Mk1A made its debut flight on October 17 at Nashik in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) CMD DK Sunil announced the new deadline of March 2026. Even after the extension of the deadline, the IAF is still uncertain about receiving the LCA Mk1A from HAL on time. In September, the HAL CMD had assured that the first two aircraft of 83 will be delivered to the IAF in October this year. HAL made us believe that the delay in delivery of the aircraft is happening due to the engine supply issue from the United States. But the fact is something different. The HAL has received four engines so far, with the first one received in April, said a source. Raising questions on the delivery claims, another source asked, HAL had said that we are waiting for the engines. Engines are here but where is the first fighter jet? Going by the checks and procedures involved, the timeline is likely to get delayed further. We have little confidence in the schedule as it would take at least six months to complete the process. HAL has made a fresh commitment on the delivery status but we are not sure that we would be able to get the aircraft and induct them before mid-2026, the source added. As per the contract, the initial plan was to start the delivery process by February 2024, but delays in supply of the GE F404 engine, software integration, and testing have repeatedly pushed back the timeline. Currently trials of the integrated weapon systems are underway and will require some time to complete. Once the trials are finished, certification must be granted, a process expected to take no less than six months. If any observations or issues are raised during this phase, additional time will be needed to address them. Regulatory body CEMILAC provides airworthiness certification for Indian airborne platforms including aircraft, helicopters, parachutes, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and aerostats. Every system, line replaceable unit (LRU), component, material, and software used in Indian military airborne platforms must be certified. The IAF has been highlighting the fast-depleting combat capabilities as the retirement of MiG-21 fighters pulled down the number of combat squadrons to 29 against the sanctioned strength of 42. The situation is fast changing as The New Indian Express recently brought out that the need to induct more combat systems is already being felt as the 42 combat squadrons sanctioned decades back will not be enough to handle the northern as well as western adversaries, in case of a two-front eventuality. The LCA Mk1A variant, an upgraded version of the Tejas Mk1, includes advanced radar, electronic warfare systems, and improved maintainability. The aircraft is a key component of the IAFs modernization drive as the plans are to induct 180 units: with 83 ordered under a Rs 48,000 crore contract signed in 2021 and 97 more Mk1A fighters further ordered, at a cost of over Rs 62,370 crore, in September. The delivery of these aircraft would commence during 2027-28 and be completed over a period of six years, a defence official had said then. IAF chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh has publicly expressed displeasure multiple times over the delays in the delivery of the LCA Mk1A. In May, during an event, he had said, So, once a timeline is given, not a single project that I can think of has been completed on time. So this is something we must look at. Why should we promise something which cannot be achieved? While signing the contract itself, sometimes we are sure that it is not going to come up, but we just sign the contract. HAL has maintained that production lines at its Bengaluru facility are now operating at full capacity. The company, despite the challenges, recently completed successful ground and flight testing of several Mk1A prototypes and is also expanding its supply base to meet the IAFs demands.

Nashik LCA production line inaugurated, can produce eight indigenous Tejas aircraft annually

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday inaugurated the third production line of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A at the Nashik facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), aimed at increasing the production of the indigenous fighter jet. This development holds particular significance as LCAs are intended to fill the gaps in combat squadrons created by the retirement of MiG fighter variants. The Ministry of Defence stated, The line operates fully and can produce eight aircraft per annum. With the inauguration of the line, HAL will achieve a total production capacity of 24 aircraft per year. The announcement comes amid concerns over the declining combat fighter strength, which has caused unease among Indian Air Force leadership. The last MiG-21 squadron (23 Squadron) was phased out in September, bringing the current number of fighter squadrons below 30. As reported earlier by The New Indian Express, the advanced LCA Mk1A integrates Uttam active electronically steered array (AESA) radar, Swayam Raksha Kavach, and control actuators, with over 64 percent indigenous content and 67 new indigenous components. On Friday, the Defence Minister also inaugurated the second production line of the Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) and flagged off the first LCA Mk1A produced at the facility. In his address, the Defence Minister described the flight of the state-of-the-art aircraft as a shining symbol of India's growing Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence. Highlighting the transformation of the defence sector over the past decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he asserted that the country, which once imported 6570 percent of critical military hardware, is now manufacturing 65 percent of the equipment domestically. He voiced the Government's resolve to achieve 100 percent domestic manufacturing in the future. Rajnath Singh noted that India previously depended on other countries for critical equipment and cutting-edge systems, which increased costs and created strategic vulnerabilities. The Defence Minister stated that annual defence production, which was worth Rs 46,429 crore in 201415, has surged to a record figure of over Rs 1.50 lakh crore in 202425, with exports reaching an all-time high of Rs 25,000 crore from less than Rs 1,000 crore a decade ago. We have now set a target of increasing defence manufacturing to Rs 3 lakh crore and exports to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029, he added. The Tejas is a lightweight, single-engine, multirole platform designed to undertake air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and strike operations. The LCA Mk1A will feature updated avionics, an upgraded electronic warfare suite, and beyond visual range missile capability. The new variant will be capable of deploying a range of weapons from extended stand-off distances. The Indian Air Force had ordered 83 LCA Tejas Mk1A at a cost of Rs 46,000 crore in 2021. Once this order is completed over the stipulated 15-year period, the IAF will possess 40 LCA Mk1, over 180 LCA Mk1A, and at least 120 LCA Mk2 aircraft. Officially, the IAF is meant to maintain 42 combat squadrons to meet all potential operational challenges, with a squadron comprising 1618 aircraft. On the evolving nature of modern warfare, Rajnath Singh said, India must always stay ahead in this new race, and not lag behind, and urged HAL to expand into next-generation aircraft, unmanned systems, and civil aviation, rather than limit itself to the LCA Tejas or HTT-40. Highlighting HAL's contribution during Operation Sindoor, the Minister cited one of the rare instances in Indian military history when the entire defence system was tested simultaneously. Operation Sindoor was one such mission. Our forces not only demonstrated valor and commitment, but also displayed their confidence in indigenous platforms. HAL provided support at various operational sites 24 hours a day during the operation. It ensured the Indian Air Force's operational readiness by carrying out prompt maintenance on fighter jets and helicopters. The Nashik team performed the crucial task of installing the BrahMos missile on the Su-30, which destroyed terrorist hideouts during the operation. This proved that when it comes to national security, we can make our own equipment and protect ourselves with it, said Rajnath Singh. The Defence Minister further pointed out that the ongoing production of the LCA Tejas and HTT-40 aircraft is also the result of collaboration between various domestic industry partners. This collaboration is proof that if the government, industries, and academia work together, no challenge is too big, he said, acknowledging the trust placed by the Indian Air Force in aircraft such as Tejas and HTT-40.

IAF's MiG-21 to retire after over six decades of service; decommissioning ceremony in Chandigarh on Sept. 26

CHANDIGARH: After 62 years, the Soviet-origin iconic Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, IAF's first supersonic air combat interceptor, will fly into the sky for different formations at the decommissioning ceremony at the Chandigarh Air Force base on September 26. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and a woman fighter pilot, Squadron Leader Priya Sharma, will be among the six pilots to fly the lost sortie. A full dress rehearsal of the September 26 ceremony was held today. At present, the air force currently has two MiG-21 squadrons, the No 23 Squadron, known as Panthers, and the No 3 Squadron, called as Cobras. There will be a three-aircraft Badal formation and a five-aircraft Panther formation. Six MiG-21s belonging to the 23 Squadron will participate in the final fly past ceremony and will be given a ceremonial water cannon salute as they land. The Jaguars and the locally produced Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA Mk-1) will also take part in the ceremony. Notably, the elite Surya Kiran aerobatic team will enthral the people with skilful aerobatic feats. Para jumpers of the Akash Ganga skydiving team of the IAF will perform, too. As per the programme, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, all three service chiefs -- army, air force and navy -- six former air chiefs and all the commanders-in-Chief of IAF commands will attend the event. These Soviet-origin fighter jets, inducted in 1963, were the first batch of 10 aircraft that arrived in April that year. These were the first supersonic fighters of the country, with its maiden squadron, the 28 Squadron (Chandigarh), earning the nickname First Supersonics. A deal with the Soviet Union was signed in 1962 and the first batch of eight pilots was trained at Lugvoya Airbase in Kazakhstan. Over the years, more than 800 MiG-21s of different variants were inducted, many built domestically by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which began license production in 1966 at its Nashik plant. A total of 1,200 aircraft of different variants were procured till 2010, with later variants undergoing significant upgrades. After the dress rehearsal, Wing Commander Jaideep Singh, spokesman of the IAF, said, The ingenuity the air force has shown that we have used this aircraft for all roles, be it photo reconnaissance, strike, air defence, or as an interceptor. This aircraft holds a lot of meaning and value to all the pilots who have flown it. It was also a fighter trainer for generations of fighter pilots who have stepped in after basic training. A limited number of MiG-21s were operated in the 1965 operations; however, the major success was in 1971 -- the famous strike over the governors residence in Dhaka, then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, which accelerated the process of ending the war. They were used in Kargil for reconnaissance and bombing as high as 18,000 feet. It was also used in the 2019 Balakot air strikes. It was in a MiG-21 that Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman (then Wing Commander) shot down a Pakistani F-16 in 2019 before being captured across the border, he said. Singh added, The IAF has inducted close to 874 MiG-21s of various types, first, type 74, then type 76, then type 77 and then 96 and Bison. We had upgraded these jets with contemporary missiles, EW and avionics. The indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is meant as the MiG-21 replacement; we are looking for the LCA to come into the IAF in huge numbers, he said. Significantly, more than 400 MiG-21s had been involved in accidents which claimed the lives of around 200 pilots, unfortunately being known as Flying Coffin.
