Bihar polls: Legacy, family feuds and fresh faces shape key battles in Phase 1

From family feuds to fresh political debuts, Bihar is gearing up for a dramatic first phase of Assembly polls on November 6. The election will feature a mix of contests from Yadav strongholds and first-time candidates stepping into the spotlight to brothers standing on opposite sides of the political divide. In Patna, the BJP is banking on new faces, while in Lakhisarai and Kuchaikote, seasoned leaders are fighting to hold their ground. As alliances shift and loyalties are tested, every constituency has its own story one of legacy and ambition shaping Bihars political stage. Heres a look at some of the key battles to watch in Phase 1: Tarapur: Samrat Choudhary (BJP) vs Arun Shah (RJD) In Munger districts Tarapur seat, BJP leader Samrat Choudhary is set to take on RJDs Arun Shah in what promises to be a close and lively fight. The Yadavs form the largest group of voters, with around 63,000 people, followed by 20,000 Muslims, 50,000 upper-caste voters (mainly Rajputs and Brahmins), 40,000 Kushwahas, 35,000 Sahs and 28,000 Dalits. Choudhary, a sitting MLC, is returning to the polls after 15 years, adding extra interest to the race. Shah had earlier contested the 2021 bypoll here but narrowly lost to JD(U)s Rajiv Kumar Singh by just over 3,800 votes. A familiar face in state politics, Choudhary has also been one of the BJPs main campaigners and has been travelling across Bihar to rally support beyond his own seat. Raghopur: Tejashwi Yadav (RJD) vs Satish Kumar (BJP) RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhans chief ministerial face, is gearing up for a high-stakes contest in Raghopur against BJPs Satish Kumar from the NDA and Jan Suraaj Partys Chanchal Kumar. Tejashwi has made jobs the centrepiece of his campaign, promising a new law to ensure one government job for every family and to begin the recruitment process within 20 months. With employment a major concern across Bihar, this pledge is seen as a potential game-changer for the RJD. Raghopur has long been a Yadav family stronghold since Lalu Prasads win in 1995, except for one term between 2010 and 2015 when JD(U) held the seat. Tejashwi has represented the constituency for the past two terms and is now looking to secure it once again. Understanding Bihars caste matrix: The key to unlocking poll outcomes in the state Mahua: Tej Pratap Yadav (JJD) vs Mukesh Raushan (RJD) In Vaishali districts Mahua seat, Lalu Prasads estranged son and independent MLA Tej Pratap Yadav will be in the spotlight as he takes on RJDs Mukesh Kumar Raushan, the sitting MLA, and LJPs Sanjay Singh. After being expelled from the RJD in May for what the party called irresponsible behaviour and straying from the partys core values, Tej Pratap formed his own outfit, the JJD. His expulsion followed a controversial social media post, now deleted, where he spoke of a 12-year relationship with a woman. Tej Pratap had earlier won Mahua in 2015 and is now hoping to reclaim it under the JJD banner. The new party brings together five smaller regional outfits the Vikas Vanchit Insaan Party, Bhojpuria Jan Morcha, Pragatisheel Janata Party, Wazib Adhikar Party and Sanyukt Kisan Vikas Party as he attempts to rebuild his political base independently. Alinagar: Maithili Thakur (BJP) vs Binod Mishra (RJD) vs JSPs Biplaw Kumar Chowdhary Folk singer Maithili Thakur, the BJPs new cultural face, will make her electoral debut from Alinagar in Darbhanga district. She will face RJDs Binod Mishra and JSPs Biplaw Kumar Chowdhary in the first phase of polling. By nominating the 25-year-old singer, the BJP aims to turn Mithilas cultural pride into political strength. Thakur joined the party in October, soon after the BJP announced its first list of 71 candidates for the Bihar elections. Alinagar has traditionally been an RJD stronghold, long represented by veteran Abdul Bari Siddiqui, who won seven times before stepping aside after his 2015 victory. In 2020, the seat went to VIPs Mishri Lal Yadav a former RJD leader who crossed over to the NDA by a narrow margin of just over 3,000 votes. Lakhisarai: Vijay Kumar Sinha (BJP) vs Suraj Kumar (JSP) vs Amresh Kumar Aneesh (INC) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha is eyeing a sixth straight victory from Lakhisarai, where he will face JSPs Suraj Kumar in the first phase of polling. Lakhisarai has been a BJP bastion for the last three Assembly terms 2010, 2015 and 2020 largely driven by caste dynamics, with strong support from Bhumihars and other upper-caste groups. A civil engineer by training and a former RSS worker, Sinha is a prominent Bhumihar leader. He made history in 2020 by becoming the first BJP member to serve as Speaker of the Bihar Assembly after the party formed the government with JD(U). Arrah: Sanjay Singh Tiger (BJP) vs Vijay Kumar Gupta (JSP) vs CPI (ML)s Quyamuddin Ansari In Arrah, BJPs Sanjay Singh Tiger will take on JSPs Vijay Kumar Gupta and CPI (ML)s Quyamuddin Ansari in what appears to be a three-cornered contest. The seat has swung between the BJP and RJD in almost every election since 2010. BJPs Amrendra Pratap Singh won in 2010 and again in 2020, both times with Ansari finishing second. In between, during the 2015 bypoll, the seat briefly returned to the RJD when Mohammad Nawaz Alam won. INTERVIEW | 'Fighting for jobs, dignity, development; NDAs austerity model is anti-people': Tejashwi Yadav Patna Sahib: Shashant Shekhar (Congress) vs Ratnesh Kushwaha (BJP) In Bihars capital, the Patna Sahib seat is set for a fresh face-off as the BJP replaces veteran leader Nand Kishore Yadav, 72, with 45-year-old lawyer Ratnesh Kushwaha. The Congress has fielded newcomer Shashant Shekhar, 35, making this a contest between two first-time candidates. An entirely urban constituency, Patna Sahib has long been a BJP stronghold. Yadav held the seat since its creation after the 2008 delimitation and defeated Congresss Pravin Singh Kushwaha by over 18,000 votes in 2020. For the Congress, this contest is a chance to reconnect with voters and rebuild its presence in a city where it has struggled to make a mark for decades. Kuchaikote: Amarendra Kumar Pandey (JD(U)) vs Hari Narain Kushwah (INC) Amarendra Kumar Pandey, popularly known as Pappu Pandey, continues to be a strong political presence in Bihars Gopalganj district. A senior JD(U) leader and sitting MLA, he represents the Kuchaikote constituency, where he has won the last two Assembly elections. Known for improving local infrastructure and supporting agricultural growth, Pandey has built a loyal voter base in the region. His influence within the party and consistent electoral success have made him one of JD(U)s key figures in western Bihar. Danapur: Ram Kripal Yadav (BJP) vs Ritlal Yadav (RJD) Former Union minister Ram Kripal Yadav returns to the state arena, contesting from Danapur on the outskirts of Patna. He faces a tough battle against RJDs Ritlal Yadav, known for his strong local base in the area. The seat carries symbolic weight for Ram Kripal it borders Pataliputra, the constituency he once represented in Parliament after defeating Lalu Prasad Yadavs daughter, Misa Bharti, in 2014. His return signals the BJPs renewed attempt to reconnect with backward-class voters in the Patna region. Siwan: Mangal Pandey (BJP) vs Awadh Bihari Choudhary (RJD) Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey, a senior BJP leader and former state party president, will contest from Siwan against RJDs Awadh Bihari Choudhary. A familiar face in Bihar politics, Pandey is known for his calm leadership and strong organisational skills within the party. Often seen as a steady hand in the BJPs Bihar unit, his name has occasionally been mentioned as a possible future chief ministerial candidate. However, the NDA has made it clear that Nitish Kumar remains its CM face for 2025. As Bihar heads into the first phase of polling, these contests will set the tone for the battles ahead. 121 seats. 18 dists. Stage set for 1st phase of Bihar assembly elections

VIP inflow floods Patna airport in election season, private jets cost 6 lakh per flying hour

PATNA: With election campaigns in full swing, Patnas Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport is witnessing an unprecedented surge in air traffic, with the facility operating well beyond its capacity. On average, 100 to 130 VIPs arrive daily, turning the airport into one of the busiest political transit hubs in the country. According to airport sources, 23 helicopters and 12 chartered aircraft have been cleared for continuous operations. After dropping off passengers, most chartered flights are sent to Gaya, Darbhanga, Varanasi, Lucknow or Ranchi to free up parking space, airport sources said. Top political leaders are flying in on private jets before switching to helicopters to criss-cross Bihar for campaign events. Of the total choppers available, 15 have been reserved for the BJP, while the rest are being used by the Congress, JD(U) and RJD, explained a source. The election season has triggered a windfall for private charter operators, many of whom have flown in aircraft from across India. Companies such as Club One Air, Air Charter and VSS are operating jets, while helicopter services are being provided by Pawan Hans, Maharaja Aviation, Red Bird Aviation, ACS Charter Services, Trans Bharat Aviation, Global Vectra and Aero Air Chartered Services. The going rate for a Falcon jet is 6 lakh per flying hour plus GST, an airport source said. A round trip between Patna and Delhi around 80 minutes each way costs over 18 lakh. For longer bookings, the rate drops slightly to 5.8 lakh per hour, the source added. These luxury jets are equipped with sofas, beds, washrooms and in-flight catering, offering the comfort of a private suite in the sky. Helicopters, meanwhile, cost 1.5 lakh per hour for single-engine models that seat four passengers and 2 lakh per hour for twin-engine versions. Global Flight Aviation Services, the agency managing ground handling, has been coordinating the constant stream of landings and departures. The first day was chaotic, an official admitted. Passenger details didnt always match the manifests, and a few VIPs had to wait for clearances. But the process has since been streamlined. Despite improved coordination, officials concede that Patna airport is stretched to its limit, with parking bays full and staff working round the clock. The crowded skies over Bihars capital reflect the intensity of the political battle.

DARBHANGA: Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday urged voters in Bihar to press the EVM button with the BJP's poll symbol lotus to prevent the return of 'jungle raj' during the RJD rule that had devastated the state. He promised that if the NDA returns to power, the government will spend Rs 26,000 crore to harness Koshi water for irrigation and to prevent floods. Addressing a poll rally in Bihar's Darbhanga, Adityanath also claimed that under the RJD-Congress rule, ration meant for the poor were looted in the state. Patna Diary: Akhilesh calls Nitish an election groom

When 26 seconds can make all the difference With elections in the offing, even 26 seconds can make all the difference in politics. It all started with a press conference of top NDA leaders, including Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and BJP president JP Nadda, on the release of the ruling alliances manifesto for the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls. Much to the delight of the Opposition, the press meet lasted only 26 seconds. The Opposition expectedly lapped the opportunity to launch a blistering attack on the NDA as senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot claimed that NDA leaders were scared of facing questions from journalists about their 20-year rule. Akhilesh calls Nitish an election groom Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav mounted a scathing attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during a recent rally in Darbhanga, where he called the latter an election groom who knows he will not retain his post after the Assembly elections. He claimed that Nitish has been seen putting garlands on others as he knows that he will not become the CM again. Akhilesh also cited similar episodes in states such as Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Appealing to voters, Yadav said, People of Awadh have already defeated BJP. Now people of Magadh will do the same in the Bihar elections. Rains pour cold water on campaign season Incessant rains for three consecutive days have poured cold water on the plans of top political leaders across party lines planning to campaign in the election-bound state. At least 22 scheduled helicopter flights have been cancelled due to inclement weather and poor visibility. This has caused much embarrassment to the leaders who were supposed to canvas in the run-up to the Assembly polls. While Opposition INDIA blocs chief ministerial face Tejashwi Yadav addressed a meeting virtually, Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently had to wait for hours so that his chopper could take off for Gopalganj. ramashankar Our correspondent in Bihar ramashankar@newindianexpress.com

Aviation growth story piggybacking on foreign travel: AAI report

NEW DELHI: The growing desire for international travel continues to fuel Indias aviation growth story. According to the latest data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the first half of the current financial year, foreign travel has surged by nearly 7% compared to the same period last year. The Air Traffic Report, made public on Wednesday, shows that 3.95 crore passengers travelled abroad from India between April and September 2025, up from 3.69 crore during the same period in 2024. Among them, Bagdogra and Coimbatore posted remarkable increases of 51% (13,492 flyers) and 50.5% (1,60,597 flyers), respectively, in AprilSeptember 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Mumbai saw a 0.8% dip, handling 1,91,02,987 passengers. BJP lodges complaint with Bihar CEO against Rahul Gandhi over Bharat Natyam jibe at PM Modi

The BJP on Thursday filed a formal complaint with the Chief Election Officer (CEO) of Bihar against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent campaign rallies. The complaint, submitted by Bindhyachal Rai, convenor of the partys Election Commission Coordination Department, alleged that Gandhis comments mocked and insulted the dignity of the Prime Ministers office, violating the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. At rallies in Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga on Wednesday, Gandhi had said, Narendra Modi is ready to enact all types of drama. You try telling him at a poll rally that, Mr Prime Minister, we will vote for you if you dance. He will readily perform Bharat Natyam. Calling the remarks personal and demeaning, the BJP urged the Election Commission to issue a show-cause notice to Gandhi, direct him to offer an unconditional public apology, and bar him from campaigning for a specific period to preserve the sanctity of democratic and electoral decorum. The party also accused the Congress leader of attempting to malign Modis image for political gain, describing it as a corrupt electoral practice. Earlier in the day, Union Minister Annapurna Devi accused Gandhi of hurting religious sentiments by allegedly mocking Chhath Puja. She referred to his remarks that Modi had planned to take a dip in the Yamuna during the festival but cancelled it after discovering that a clean-water puddle had been arranged because the river was polluted. Women of Purvanchal who observe the festival with a 36-hour nirjala fast are aggrieved by his comments, Annapurna Devi said. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also slammed Gandhi for his remarks targeting the Prime Minister, saying his comments had left even good leaders in the Congress embarrassed. The Congress party has suffered due to the comments of Rahul Gandhi. The good people in Congress too are embarrassed by his comments. No leader can speak in such a language, Rijiju said on the sidelines of the third national conference on the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA). He added that the people of India would never bring the Congress back to power if Gandhi continued to speak in such a manner. Every time Rahul Gandhi opens his mouth, the party faces losses. The nation is progressing, but the Congress continues to face setbacks, the senior BJP leader remarked. Responding to the development, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera retorted: It is an irony that the Prime Minister, who uses terms like 'mujra' while targeting his opponents, has a problem with the word 'dance'. Khera was alluding to the May 25 comment of Modi. While addressing a rally in Bihar, the PM had said, I will foil the plans of the INDIA bloc to rob the SCs, STs and OBC of their rights and divert those to Muslims. They may remain enslaved and perform mujra to please their vote bank. Talking to reporters in Patna, Khera claimed that the BJP has no agenda and no report card to put before the public. Earlier in the day, Union Minister Annapurna Devi had alleged that Rahul Gandhi was maligning the sanctity of Chhath puja by terming it a drama. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who was on a two-day campaign tour of Bihar, on Wednesday said Rahul Gandhi's remark on Chhath puja as an insult to the faith of devotees . In a post on X, the chief minister said Gandhis remarks reflected political immaturity and amounted to a gross insult to the faith of millions of Chhath devotees. His comment on Chhath and ridicule directed at Mother Yamuna clearly show that his thoughts are so much distanced from Indian culture, Sanatan tradition, and folk beliefs, she said. Gupta added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modis leadership, the Delhi government had ensured a remarkable confluence of faith and cleanliness at Yamuna ghats during Chhath celebrations, unlike in previous years when devotees were forced to worship amidst foam and filth. She said the BJPs commitment to faith and cleanliness stood in sharp contrast to Congresss negative politics. Calling Gandhis remarks on Modi derogatory and a reflection of political bankruptcy, the chief minister said the Congress had no agenda for Bihar and was resorting to personal accusations for cheap popularity. Lalu wants to make his son Bihar CM, Sonia her son PM but both posts not vacant: Amit Shah in Bihar

DARBHANGA/ SAMASTIPUR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday attacked the INDIA bloc, alleging that RJD supremo Lalu Prasad wants to make his son Tejashwi the chief minister of Bihar and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi her son Rahul the PM, while asserting that oth posts were not vacant. Addressing a public rally in Darbhanga, Shah also questioned whether the members of radical outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), who were arrested after the Centre banned the organisation, would remain behind bars if the Congress-RJD combine came to power in Bihar. The BJP has given tickets to many youngsters for the Bihar assembly polls, but the RJD and Congress have not, as Lalu ji wants to make his son Tejashwi the chief minister and Sonia ji wants her son Rahul to be the PM... but I want to let them know that both posts are not vacant, he said. Shah termed the Mahagathbandhan as 'thug bandhan', alleging that Lalu Prasad is involved in fodder, bitumen and land-for-jobs scams, while Congress was involved in corruption cases worth Rs 12 lakh crore. The home minister asserted that it was the NDA government that banned PFI. PFI operatives were active in Patna's Phulwari Sharif. Searches were conducted across the country and members of the organisation were put behind bars. Do you think that the PFI members will remain in prison if the RJD-Congress combine comes to power in Bihar? he questioned. Addressing another rally in Samastipur, Shah said, The Bihar polls are an election to prevent the return of 'jungle raj' to the state. The NDA in the state is like 'paanch paandav' a strong alliance of five parties. The INDIA bloc will be routed and we will form the government after registering a historic victory this time. Shah alleged that the INDIA bloc wants to snatch the title of 'Jannayak' of former chief minister Karpoori Thakur. Modi ji bestowed Bharat Ratna upon Jannayak Karpoori Thakur. Now, they (opposition) want to take away the title from Karpoori ji. We will not let this happen. People have seen the real face of Congress that had prevented Babu Jagjivan Ram from becoming the PM, he alleged. Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi did nothing for Bihar's development... Rise and rise of Son of Mallah in Bihar political potboiler

PATNA: The INDIA bloc has finally yielded ground to Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani, who was on Thursday formally announced as deputy chief ministerial face of the Opposition alliance for the Bihar Assembly elections. It has been a meteoric rise for 44-year-old Sahani. Starting as a Bollywood set designer, he chose politics as his next career, formed a new party in 2018, contested 2020 Assembly elections as part of NDA and finally ended up as a hard bargainer in the 2025 state polls. Sahanis party has no MLA in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. Better known as Son of Mallah, Sahani is now with INDIA bloc comprising the RJD, Congress and three Left partiesCPI-ML, CPI, CPI(M). He comes from Mallah (fishermen) community, an EBC, which constitutes nearly 2.5% of Bihars population, as per the caste survey conducted in 2022-23. Mallahs, Sahanis and Nishads constitute nearly 9% of the states population. The VIP chief is expected to tilt their votes towards the INDIA bloc. Mallahs, a sub-caste of Nishad community, are spread across the state but have influence in certain constituencies in north Bihar, particularly Mithilanchal and Seemanchal regions. Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Supaul, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Kishanganj, Saharsa, Khagaria, East Champaran and West Champaran are among districts where fishermen have sizeable population. Elated over being named as INDIA blocs deputy CM face, Sahani targeted BJP, saying, BJP ko jab tak hum todenge nahi, tab tak chhodenge nahi (I will not let go until I cause a split in BJP). Sahani said that he had been waiting for the moment (being declared deputy CM face) for the last three and a half years. He narrated how his MLAs were poached by the BJP after he raised the issue of reservation for fishermen in Bihar and other states. I have not forgotten the moment when I was dropped from the Nitish cabinet, and my MLAs were poached by BJP. I had vowed then to teach BJP a lesson at an opportune time. And that time has come, he told this reporter. In the 2020 Assembly elections, four VIP candidates won. In November 2021, its Bochahan MLA Musafir Sahni died. In the by-election, the BJP fielded its candidate on the seat earlier held by VIP. Moreover, Sahanis decision to contest elections in Uttar Pradesh against the BJP strained their relationship. Barely a week before the first phase of the Assembly elections in 2020, Sahani had jumped from the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) and aligned with the BJP and JD(U). He had then accused RJD and its allies of betrayal as his party was sidelined in the seat-sharing deal. But after his bitter experience with the BJP after 2020 elections, he again aligned with RJD-Congress-led Mahagathandhan and is eyeing better performance in the Assembly polls to be held on November 6 and 11. Sahani initially demanded 25 seats and a deputy CM post but has to settle with 15 seats and deputy CM post. VIP chief likely to tip poll scales in favour of INDIA Sahanis party has no MLA in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. Better known as Son of Mallah, Sahani is now with INDIA bloc comprising the RJD, Congress and three Left partiesCPI-ML, CPI, CPI(M). Folk singers, Bhojpuri actors add glamour to Bihar elections Bihars election stage has always had drama, but this time, the script has a cinematic twist. A folk singer and Bhojpuri actors have entered the political fray, turning the 2025 assembly election into a fusion of star power and caste calculation. The bureaucrat-turned politician, known for speaking his mind, said that voters should opt for NOTA rather than vote for candidates with criminal antecedents. It is better to die than vote for candidates with tainted past, he said. He took the names of JD(U)s Anant Singh (Mokama), Samrat Chaudhary (Tarapur), Osama Shahab (Raghunathpur) and Deepu Singh (Arrah) as some of the candidates with a blemished record. Husband, wife engage in political showdown A family discord has spilled over to political arena in Bihars East Champaran district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address more than 10 public rallies during the first two phases of polling, scheduled for November 6 and November 11, covering a total of 122 assembly constituencies, sources said. Sources said that PM Modis rallies will target areas where the NDAs influence is relatively weak but where the Prime Minister maintains a strong personal following. Each of Modis rallies is expected to cover 15 to 20 assembly segments and will be supported by live telecasts in remote regions. We think the PM will effectively address almost all key segments through these mega rallies. The final number is yet to be confirmed, but he is expected to address more than 10 rallies between the two phases, a senior BJP leader said. The NDAs campaign will also see a strong push from other top leaders. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to hold between 30 and 35 rallies, each covering five to seven constituencies. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who holds significant sway among Rajput and upper-caste voters in the state, is likely to address over 25 rallies. Home Minister Amit Shah, widely regarded as the BJPs chief electoral strategist, will address at least 25 rallies. BJP national president JP Nadda, known for his longstanding involvement in Bihar politics, is slated to hold 20 to 25 solo rallies, apart from shared platforms with other leaders. This time, the number may rise, and roadshows in key cities are also under consideration. Folk singer Maithili Thakur joins BJP ahead of Bihar polls

PATNA: Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur made her political debut on Tuesday and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the forthcoming Bihar assembly elections. She took membership of the BJP in the presence of a host of senior leaders, including state president Dilip Jaiswal. I will follow whatever instructions are given to me. Contesting an election is not my goal. I will abide by the order given to me by the party leadership, she said, after taking membership of the saffron party in Patna. She was full of praise for the development work undertaken in Bihar under NDA rule. I have seen the developments brought about by the NDA in the state, she said. Thakur has been tipped to be fielded from the Alinagar assembly seat in Darbhanga district. The seat is currently held by BJP MLA Mishri Lal Yadav, who was acquitted by the Patna high court in a criminal case recently. Mishri Yadavs membership was withdrawn after being convicted in the case. During an internal survey conducted by the BJP, it was noticed that the sitting MLAs popularity has decreased substantially in his constituency. Earlier, Maithili Thakur had said that if the party leadership considered her candidacy, she would prefer to contest from any constituency in Madhubani and Darbhanga districts. I have my roots in both Madhubani and Darbhanga districts, she had said. While her grandmothers village is located in Madhubani district, her maternal grandmother belonged to Darbhanga district. AIMIM had attempted to prevent the division of secular votes and unite against communal forces, but the larger coalition partners didnt cooperate, resulting in the formation of a third front, Iman asserted. He added that the party has released the list of 32 candidates out of the 100 seats it intends to contest in the 2025 assembly elections. The names of the candidates for the announced seats will be revealed soon, he said. Will join INDIA alliance in Bihar if AIMIM gets to contest six seats: Owaisi The AIMIM state president recalled that during the 2020 assembly elections, the party was accused of splitting secular votes. It is well known that we had written to RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav seeking an alliance ahead of the 2025 assembly polls but received no response, he added. In the 2020 assembly election, AIMIM fielded candidates in 20 seats and won five. This performance was seen as having impacted the Grand Alliance, comprising the RJD, Congress, and Left parties. However, four of AIMIMs MLAs later switched over to the RJD, leaving Akhtarul Iman as the partys lone representative in the state assembly. AIMIM had contested the 2020 election in alliance with Mayawatis BSP and Upendra Kushwahas RLSP. The party had influenced the performance of Opposition parties in several constituencies. Kushwaha later joined the BJP-JD(U)-led NDA and formed a new party called the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM). In the 2025 assembly election, RLM has been offered six seats. Muslims account for nearly 18 percent of the states population of over 13 crore, according to the 202223 state census.

Uncertainty grips NDA, INDIA bloc over seat-sharing as nomination process begins in Bihar

NEW DELHI: Although the nomination process for 121 seats in the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections began on Friday, ahead of polling on November 6, both the JD(U)-led NDA and the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan are yet to finalise seat-sharing arrangements within their alliances and the announcement of candidate lists. The situation highlights how forming and managing pre-poll alliances in Bihar has become increasingly difficult, driven by shifting political equations and competing ambitions. Sources within the BJP indicate that the NDAs internal seat-sharing arrangement is likely to be finalised within a day or two, after which the party plans to release its first list of candidates. The JD(U), another key NDA ally, is also expected to announce its candidate list soon, according to party insiders. Meanwhile, Union Minister Chirag Paswans Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is reportedly demanding 45 seats, while the NDA has offered between 20 and 22. As negotiations continued on Friday, BJP Bihar in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan arrived in Patna to finalise the seat-sharing arrangement and prepare a fresh list of candidates. Nomination begins for first phase of Bihar polls; seat-sharing talks intensify in NDA, INDIA bloc It is speculated that the NDA may soon reach an agreement, with the BJP likely to contest around 101102 seats, JD(U) 102103, LJP (RV) 2325, and LJP 2023, while both HAM and RLM may be allotted 7 seats each. Amid the ongoing uncertainty with the two main alliances, Prashant Kishors newly formed political outfit, Jan Suraaj, took the lead on Thursday by announcing a list of 51 candidates. In Delhi, senior Bihar BJP leader and MoS for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai met Chirag Paswan for the second consecutive day, saying that the talk moved in a positive direction. The ongoing confusion within both the ruling and opposition camps is being linked to rising regional political aspirations, particularly among smaller parties that depend heavily on caste-based support. Local political analysts say these ambitions continue to complicate alliance politics in Bihar. The first phase of polling will cover key districts including Patna, Darbhanga, Madhepura, Saharsa, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Sheikhpura, Nalanda, Buxar, and Bhojpur.

Nomination begins for first phase of Bihar polls; seat-sharing talks intensify in NDA, INDIA bloc

PATNA: Filing of nomination papers began on Friday for the elections to 121 seats in the first phase of the Bihar assembly polls, officials said. The first round of the elections will be held on November 6. Candidates can file their nomination papers til October 17, and the scrutiny of such documents will be held on the next day, according to a notification. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 20 for the first phase of the assembly polls. Patna, Darbhanga, Madhepura, Saharsa, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Sheikhpura, Nalanda, Buxar, and Bhojpur districts will go for polls in the first phase. The second and final phase of the poll will take place on November 11 in 122 assembly seats. The counting of votes will take place on November 14. The ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc have not declared their list of candidates so far. Constituents of the NDA and the INDIA bloc are grappling with differences over seat-sharing, with smaller allies in both camps jostling for more seats. However, Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj party declared a list of 51 candidates on Thursday. Amid growing unease in the ruling NDA over the seat sharing, senior BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reached Patna on Friday and will hold meetings with senior party leaders. Sources in the BJP said that the seat-sharing arrangements within the NDA will be finalised in a day or two, and the party will release its first list of candidates soon after that. Bihar polls: Left parties smoothen seat-sharing deal with RJD, Congress The JD(U), another alliance partner of the NDA, is also expected to announce its list of candidates very soon, party sources said. According to sources in the NDA, the allies - JD (U) and BJP - are likely to contest 102 and 101 seats, respectively. Union minister Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), which had earlier settled for around 20-22 seats, is now asking for 45 segments, they said. In the opposition bloc, sources said the RJD is likely to contest 135-140 seats. The party has offered the Congress 50-52 seats, lower than the party's demand for 70 assembly segments. Sources in the RJD said a meeting of senior party leaders will take place in Patna later in the day to finalise the list of its candidates. In the 2020 assembly polls, the Congress had fought 70 seats but won only 19. The other big constituent of the INDIA bloc, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, also appeared unhappy with the reportedly 20-25 seats being offered to it. Five years ago, the CPI (ML) Liberation won 12 of the 19 seats it contested, and is reportedly demanding 40 this time. Bihar polls: Political parties inch closer to sealing seat-sharing deal

PATNA: With the announcement of poll schedule for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, hectic parleys among the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition bloc are underway. The Opposition bloc comprising RJD, Congress, VIP, and Left parties, however, claimed on Tuesday that a seat-sharing deal has been finalised and the same would be announced in a day or two. Former minister and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani claimed that the seat-sharing formula among the allies of Mahagathbandhan, a part of the INDIA bloc, has been finalised. The number of seats to be allotted to each partner and names of blocs chief ministerial face as well as deputy chief minister would also be announced, he told this reporter. According to insiders, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is expected to play the role of senior partner in the alliance while Congress is appearing to compromise with just 55-57 seats and giving up all the seats in Patna district. The seat-sharing formula was finalised after the intervention of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, as VIP was adamant on its demand for the deputy chief ministers post. The proposed seat-sharing arrangement allocates 125 seats to RJD, 55 to 57 seats to Congress, 35 seats to three Left parties, 20 seats to VIP, three seats to Pashupati Kumar Paras Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) and two seats to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Sources, however, claimed that CPI-ML was not satisfied with number of seats allotted to it. D. Raja, general secretary of CPI, who reached here to attend a meeting of Opposition bloc on seat-sharing, told the media that everything within the Opposition bloc would be finalised smoothly. Congress has agreed to forgo some of its traditional seats in this election. For instance, the party has agreed to give up all the seats in Patna district. In the 2020 assembly election, Congress contested four seats in Patna district. These seats may go into RJDs kitty. High-stakes battle in Bihar: Two-phase polls to test opposition unity and NDAs hold on power In addition, several seats which were earlier held by Congress, including Sursand (Sitamarhi), Jale (Darbhanga), and Raja Pakar (Vaishali) may go to RJD. The sitting MLA from Raja Pakar is Pratima Singh. But RJD wants to field Shivchandra Ram from this seat. JMM is also expected to enter the political fray in Bihar. It is eyeing seats along with the Jharkhand border. Sources said that the party may be given two seats in the seat-sharing deal, although its demand is reportedly higher. Similarly, RLJP is to get three seats, the list of which has already been submitted to Tejashwi Yadav, who is the chairman of the coordination committee of the INDIA bloc. In NDA, BJP and JD(U) are likely to contest almost equal number of seats, with a total of 205 seats being divided between the two major allies. The remaining seats are to be distributed among smaller NDA alliesLok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM). Sources said that the BJP has offered 25 seats to Chirag Paswans LJP(RV), seven seats to HAM led by Jitan Ram Manjhi and six seats to Upendra Kushwahas RLM. However, negotiations with Chirag Paswan are going on and may reach a consensus by Tuesday evening. A source said that if Paswans share of seats increases, it may result in a reduction of seats to Kushwahas RLM. In the case that the smaller allies' seat share is reduced, the BJP may compensate them with offers of Rajya Sabha or Legislative Council seats. All top leaders of NDA from Bihar are camping in New Delhi to give final touch to seat allocation. Bihar assembly elections are to be held in two phasesfirst on November 6 and second on November 11. The counting of votes will take place on November 14. The election process will be concluded by November 16. The term of the present state assembly expires on November 22.

Renowned singer Maithili Thakur to contest Bihar elections on BJP ticket

PATNA: Noted folk and classical singer Maithili Thakur is set to contest upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, the schedule of which was announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on Monday. Maithili may be fielded as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from one of the constituencies in Darbhanga district, preferably from Alinagar assembly seat. The sitting MLA Mishri Lal Yadav was disqualified after being convicted for two years in a case. Though Yadav won the seat in 2020 assembly election on Mukesh Sahanis Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), he later defected to the NDA. Maithili Thakurs name for the Alinagar seat is doing the rounds ever since the BJP in-charge for Bihar Vinod Tawde shared Maithilis photo with Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai. Maithili, along with her father met the BJP leaders in New Delhi. The meeting fuelled speculation of Maithilis political entry and BJPs plan to counter anti-incumbency by replacing Yadav from the Alinagar seat, which the party has held twice. Party leadership wanted to replace the candidate with a new face to defuse dissatisfaction within party ranks over sitting MLAs performance and alleged anti-party activity. Bihar Assembly elections to be held in two phases on November 6,11; results on November 14 Tawde took a did at RJD through his post on X, describing that the family migrated from Bihar in 1995 during Lalu regime. The daughter of Bihar wants to return her home state after observing the changing scenario in the state, Tawde said in his post. Born in 2000 in Darbhangas Benipatti, Maithili rose to prominence through her folk and classical music performances. The cultural stature was also recognised by the Election Commission of India, which appointed her as a state icon for voter awareness campaign. She had served as brand ambassador for Madhubani district in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Political observers pointed out that if Maithilis candidature is confirmed, it may a strategic move of BJP to broaden the partys appeal towards young voters in the upcoming assembly polls. Her entry in active politics may enthuse young voters in Mithilanchal region as she is having considerable influence among younger generation. Maithili is not the only young candidate; Bhojpuri singer-turned actor Pawan Singh is also likely to contest the assembly election from one of the constituencies in Shahabad region, preferably from Ara in Bhojpur district. He recently met former union minister and Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief Upendra Kushwaha, fuelling speculation that he may contest election. Amrit Bharat trains transform mobility, opportunities for Bihar residents

NEW DELHI: With the introduction of pairs of Amrit Bharat trains in Bihar, well ahead of the upcoming assembly elections this year, the NDA government, with the BJP as a key partner in the state and leading the national alliance at the Centre, appears to be achieving its intended electoral goals. Let whatever others issues aside, the introduction of Amrit Bharat trains in Bihar has made us think only of the BJP-led NDAbe it in the state or for the Centre. We now have trains to move and trains to go for earning livelihood. What have they (the Opposition) done for us so far? Nothing, angrily remarked Sohan Yadav, a resident of Chapra, supported by Runa Paswan, a daily wage labourer, and Niraj Singh, an upper caste person working as a shopkeeper, standing behind him in Saran. Sujjwal Tiwari, boarding an Amrit Bharat Express train in Bihar, hailed the introduction of the Amrit Bharat Express as a good, people-friendly move because of its facilities and comfort level. As Bihar has never been a stationary state, Indian Railways has added momentum to its transformation from a state of backwardness to one that is increasingly mobile, particularly in terms of transportation infrastructure and train services. Now, gone are the days when Bihars residents had to use overcrowded trains, stand in long queues, and endure slow connections. That picture is now changing. With the introduction of the Amrit Bharat Express, it has changed the book and now Bihar has a new face in the rail revolution of the country, a senior railway official told this newspaper. He added, The Amrit Bharat Express is indeed a people train, unlike premium trains which are beyond the reach of many families. Its sleeper prices are only slightly higher than older mail coaches, but the comfort is a million times better: no jerky ride, better seats, bio-vacuum toilets, charging plugs, updated safety systems, and a pantry car, too. To average Biharis, this gives a sense of pride. It is more pocket friendly and adds a modern touch to travel to Delhi or Mumbai. Fourteen Amrit Bharat services have been launched, and Bihar is the first state in the country connected with eleven Amrit Bharat Express trainsa testimony to the states centrality in Indias mobility narrative. Cities such as Patna, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Sitamarhi, Gaya, and Motihari now enjoy direct connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Amritsar, and Bengaluru. The newly launched JogbaniErode Express spans an incredible 3,129 km, connecting the northeast corner of Bihar to the industrial belt of Tamil Nadubinding the nation together from top to bottom. It is not just a train for people; it is a bridge to opportunities and ambitions for migrant workers, students, and families, remarked a railway official. According to the Railways, farmers and small traders in Bihar can now deliver produce, textiles, and handicrafts to larger markets via built-in parcel vans, while the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is providing local artisans with new platforms to showcase their productssuch as Madhubani paintings, Bhagalpuri silk, and regional sweets. Already, rickshaw pullers, tea sellers, and hotels around these stations are finding more business as the footfall of passengers increases. Every train that stops is not only a source of travellers, but also an economic lifeblood to communities, remarked a railway official, citing the economic benefits of enhanced train services in a state like Bihar. He added that tourist destinations such as Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, and Patna Sahib will also become more accessible, drawing both domestic and international tourists. The new GayaDelhi service, as an example, puts the most holy place of Buddhism in the world within the reach of the capital in one night. Likewise, the Ramayana Circuit is reinforced by the Delhi train, which serves Sitamarhi, the birthplace of Sita. And now that Biharis can more readily visit the Golden Temple of Amritsar or the ghats of Haridwar, those in those areas can explore the cultural treasure of Bihar, he said. Most importantly, the Amrit Bharat has sparked a wave of optimism. Bihar, long seen as an outlier in terms of infrastructure, is now becoming a hub for modernisation in the rail sector. This is because it is making youths pursue opportunities, families reunite, and villages join the national markets, as they become more connected, remarked a railway official.

RJD workers insulted PM Modi's late mother during Bihar Adhikar Yatra, BJP alleges

PATNA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday alleged that abuses were hurled at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late mother by RJD workers during Tejashwi Yadav's 'Bihar Adhikar Yatra', which concluded on Saturday. BJP also claimed that Tejashwi was on the dais when his party workers made derogatory remarks against PMs mother. Sharing a video of the purported latest such an incident on his X handle, deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary wrote, Tejashwi Yadav has once again insulted Modi ji's late mother. He has once again torn apart the culture of Bihar. In the rally, the RJD workers were hurling as many abuses as they could, and Tejashwi was encouraging them. The mothers and sisters of Bihar will surely hold him accountable for this thuggish mentality and abusive behaviour. Union minister and BJP MP Giriraj Singh said, Crores of mothers in Bihar and the country have been insulted, and people will accordingly respond in the assembly election. They take offense when we call Lalu Yadav's regime as Jungle Raj. Our Prime Minister is being abused from the stage of Lalu's prince. You people will not improve. Judging by your demeanor, character, and appearance, it's clear that you are Lalu's political heir. Reacting sharply to BJPs allegations, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said, BJP is deeply alarmed by the unprecedented support Tejashwi's Bihar Adhikar Yatra has received. BJP and its allies are in no position to comment on the issues Tejashwi is raising during the Yatra. Therefore, the BJP has been orchestrating a conspiracy and conspiracy to divert attention. The people of Bihar have understood this. The RJD's culture is not such that it would use abusive language against anyone. The credibility of the video being shown is questionable, as the BJP's political foundation rests on lies and trickery. If anyone has used abusive language against the Prime Minister, we strongly condemn it. We also demand an investigation and the strictest possible action against the guilty, he added. It is not for the first time that the opposition is facing such allegations as abuses were allegedly hurled from a stage in Darbhanga during Congress leader Rahul Gandhis 'Voter Adhikar Yatra'. One person was later arrested by police for being involved in hurling abuses on PM Modi and her late mother at an event organised during Voter Adhikar Yatra. Subsequently, Bihar Congress shared an AI-powered clip showing Prime Minister dreaming his mother was rebuking him over his politics. Bihar minister accused of assaulting YouTuber as Tejashwi Yadav steps in to ensure FIR

PATNA: A senior minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet has been accused of assaulting a YouTuber during his visit to his assembly constituency in Darbhanga district, leading to political uproar and intervention by RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. The incident occurred on Sunday when Jibesh Kumar, the urban development and housing minister, toured his Jale constituency. A local YouTuber, identified as Dilip Kumar Sahani, confronted the minister to ask about the poor condition of a road in the area. According to Sahanis complaint filed at Singhwara police station, the ministers associates hurled abuses, assaulted him, and tried to drag him inside their vehicle. See how a BJP minister behaves with a YouTuber or journalist in a state run by a double engine government, Tejashwi told reporters outside the police station. He alleged that the situation had worsened to the extent that the Leader of Opposition himself had to intervene to register an FIR against a minister. Tejashwi also threatened to launch road blockades if action was not taken against the accused. Minister Jibesh Kumar, however, denied the allegations, saying he had no knowledge of the incident. I will comment only after receiving a report from the SDPO who visited the village to ascertain the truth, he said. His security guard claimed that the ministers vehicle was pelted with stones and that there was an attempt to disrupt the ministers official duty. Police said complaints had been received from both sides and an investigation was underway. Subham Kumar Suman, SDPO, visited the village to defuse tension. Local residents told the police that the minister was visiting a bereaved family to offer condolences when the YouTuber confronted him, prompting a brief altercation before the minister left the spot.

Poll-bound Bihar to get several projects across sectors during PM Modis visit on September 15

NEW DELHI: Poll-bound Bihar is set to receive a host of new schemes and infrastructure development projects, including the National Makhana Board, on September 15, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the state to lay the foundation stone for these schemes and inaugurate many of them. The National Makhana Board is being established to promote production and technological advancement, strengthen post-harvest management, encourage value addition and processing, and facilitate marketing, export, and brand development in Makhana, thereby benefiting cultivators. As Bihar officially accounts for approximately 90% of the countrys total Makhana production, the establishment of the board is expected to significantly benefit cultivators in districts such as Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, Katihar, Purnea, Supaul, Kishanganj, and Araria. These areas serve as the main hubs for Makhana production due to favourable climatic conditions and fertile soil. In addition to the Makhana Board, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Interim Terminal Building at the New Civil Enclave of Purnea Airport, aimed at enhancing passenger handling capacity in the region. Purnea is one of the key cities in Bihars Seemanchal area. He will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth approximately Rs 36,000 crore in Purnea, including the foundation stone for a 3x800 MW thermal power project at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur. 20,000 RSS volunteers working at grassroots in Bihar to boost NDA's chances in assembly polls

NEW DELHI: With Bihar set for a keenly fought battle at the polls following the Opposition's launch of the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', the RSS the ideological mentor of the BJP has reportedly intensified its groundwork in the state to smoothen the pitch for the BJP-led NDA. Over 20,000 RSS volunteers are discreetly advancing the organisations mission at the grassroots level by promoting the Sanghs nationalist ideology and highlighting how the government's actions are aligned with the Sanghs vision of the national interest. With Bihar poised for a high-stakes triangular contest in a majority of assembly constituencies after the entry of political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor's newly formed Jan Suraj Party, the role of the Sangh on the ground has become more crucial. In an emerging situation where the Opposition-led by the RJD with the Congress has started creating a fake narrative on SIR and other issues against the government, our duty as citizens is also to dispel these narratives on the ground. The Sangh is dedicated to the nation and the people as the world's largest social organisation, remarked a Sangh volunteer, neither denying the presence of Sangh volunteers on the ground nor admitting it on record. Although the Sangh does not directly engage in political campaigning, its volunteers, who are called Swayamsevaks, continue to actively promote its nationalist and Hindutva ideologies to help create a favourable ground for the saffron party in the electoral arena. As part of its nationwide strategy to mark its centenary celebrations beginning this Vijayadashami which falls on October 2 this year the Sangh is planning outreach efforts across the country, including in the remote areas of Bihar. A series of public interactions have been planned to deepen the Sanghs connection with the masses. Topics such as the success of Operation Sindoor, the SIR whether it is needed in the country or not and other issues designed to bring about social change in the broader interest of the public, will be actively addressed during the centenary year. Sources indicated that Sangh volunteers are already active on the ground in many districts across Bihar, including Siwan, Buxar, Ara, Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Bhagalpur, Kishanganj, Purnia, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Rohtas, West Champaran, Vaishali, and others. With the aim of educating and making people aware of national issues and interests, the Sanghs volunteers are reportedly well ahead in their ground-level work in the run-up to the assembly elections. The RSS has also deployed volunteers from other states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and others to assist in groundwork ahead of its centenary functions, which coincide with the Bihar assembly elections scheduled for November this year. Even in Bihars Seemanchal region, which has a significant Muslim population, the Sangh has an organised presence, with volunteers working in a disciplined manner to inspire people towards nationalist ideologies. The entire state of Bihar has been divided into four zones, each managed by experienced Sangh volunteers working in coordination with volunteers from other RSS-inspired social organisations. The Sanghs volunteers, affiliated with several RSS-inspired organisations such as the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), Sanskar Bharti, Swadeshi Jagran Manch, and the Rashtriya Shaikshanik Mahasangh are also on the ground ahead of the elections, in the same coordinated manner they had adopted in Haryana and Maharashtra prior to the assembly polls there. A senior source closely associated with the Sangh said the centenary-related activities in Bihar have already commenced, but they are expected to gain momentum after 22 September the conclusion of the inauspicious Pitra-Paksha period, which begins on September 7. Numerous Hindu Sammelans are scheduled to be held in Bihars interior regions as part of the centenary events, coinciding with the growing election fervour in the state.

NDA protests abuse against PM, RJD calls it a flop show

PATNA: The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Thursday staged protests across Bihar against the use of abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mother during the Oppositions Voter Adhikar Yatra, even as RJD chief Lalu Prasad launched a counter, asking the PM whether he ordered BJP members to insult women during the agitation. While the BJP and its allies claimed that the bandh was successful, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said it was a flop and accused BJP workers of indulging in hooliganism. RJD, as well as Congress, posted several videos showing how bandh protagonists allegedly physically assaulted common people during the agitation. The protests are in response to a man identified as Rizvi alias Raja allegedly hurling abuses at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mother, the late Heeraben, from the stage in Darbhanga during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi`s Yatra. During the five-hour shutdown, essential services, including emergency facilities and rail operations, remained unaffected. The BJP Mahila Morcha led the protest. Senior BJP leaders, including Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal, MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad and Dharmshila Gupta, along with state ministers and MLAs, staged sit-ins. Similar protests were organised in districts such as Nawada, Muzaffarpur, Katihar, and Darbhanga. However, RJD chief Lalu Prasad questioned the PM, saying, Did Prime Minister Modi order BJP members to insult the mothers, sisters, and daughters of Bihar and Biharis today? Should Gujaratis take Biharis so lightly? This is Bihar. Are BJP goons and ruffians abusing respected teachers, women walking on the streets, students, pregnant women, the elderly, and journalists, engaging in physical altercations and mistreating them? Is this appropriate? Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor claimed that the bandh did not garner peoples support and stated that they would be rid of both Lalu (RJD) and Nitish (JD(U)) after the assembly elections.

NDA calls for five-hour Bihar bandh on Sept 4 to protest abuses hurled at PM, his late mother

Patna: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) party has given a call for a five-hour bandh in Bihar on September 4 to protest against the abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Heeraben, during the Voter Adhikar Yatra launched by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Darbhanga. Announcing the bandh call, Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal said that the bandh call will be effective from 7 am to 12 noon on September 4 (Thursday). However, railways and emergency services have been exempted from the ambit of the bandh, he told the media. Jaiswal, who was watching PM Modi on TV in the party office, literally broke down. Slamming the Congress-RJD, BJP state president asked what bigger sin could be than abusing the PM's mother, who is no more and has nothing to do with politics. Rahul Gandhi has brought shame to the land of Bihar by allowing a man to hurl abuses on PM and his late mother from the stage meant for Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga last week, Jaiswal said, adding that the party would observe bandh as a mark of protest. Lauding the efforts of PM Modi for Bihars development, Jaiswal said that on Tuesday he (PM) provided financial assistance to mothers and daughters of the state. Around 20 mothers and sisters were listening to PM Modi when he disbursed financial aid to the state, he said. He added that a decision to observe bandh on September 4 was taken after a meeting with leaders of women cells of all five constituents of NDA. The women cells of NDA allies were deeply hurt by the behaviour of Congress-RJD leaders. JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha said that the way PM Modi and his late mother was abused from a public platform was against democratic norms. One may differ on political ideologies, but it does mean that family should be dragged into controversy, he said. Kushwaha, who was present at the press conference, expressed surprise over the silence of Congress-RJD senior leaders over the issue. So far no reactions have come the top leaders of Congress-RJD neither they have apologised for the incident, he asserted. Raju Tiwari, state president of LJP(RV), said that humiliating women had been the tradition of Congress-RJD, and the Darbhanga incident was just a reflection of it. Madan Choudhary of RLM was also present at the press conference. JD(U) women's cell president Bharti Mehta said what is more shocking that abuses were hurled on PMs late mother from the land of Mithilanchal, which has always given preferences to women in every sphere of life. This is more humiliating, and it will not be tolerated, she remarked. On the other hand, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar said that BJP was trying to divert the peoples attention by playing the emotional card before the assembly election. They did similar thing in Karnataka. Now they are trying to repeat in Bihar, he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: In a strong response and attack on the Opposition following the incident where his late mother was allegedly abused by a man from the stage set up for the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' organised by the RJD and Congress in Bihar, Prime Minister Modi became visibly emotional as he criticised both parties for the act. Speaking to the women of poll-bound Bihar via video conferencing during the launch of a new cooperative, 'Bihar Rajya Jeevika Saakh Sahkari Sangh Limited', the Prime Minister described the abuses directed at his deceased mother as an insult to all mothers, sisters and daughters of the country, especially Bihar. He accused the RJD-Congress alliance of dragging his late mother into politics, and said such actions may not be forgiven by the women of Bihar. I may forgive RJD-Cong, but people of Bihar will never pardon them for insulting my mother. Hurling abuses at my mother is nothing for those who insult 'Mother India'; such people must be punished, the Prime Minister asserted. He alleged that the RJD seeks revenge against women, as its previous government in Bihar was ousted because women voted against it. BJP slams Rahul Gandhis Bihar yatra over alleged abuses against PM Modis mother Turning the incident into a broader campaign against the Opposition among women, PM Modi urged, You should seek answers from RJD and Congress. There should be only one voice from every street and neighbourhood abuses of mother will not be tolerated. He further described the incident as an attack on womens dignity and said, Attack on honour, will not be tolerated. RJDs atrocities will not be tolerated. Congresss attack will not be tolerated. Insult to mothers, will not be tolerated. The Prime Minister alleged, The people who hurl abuses at mothers have a mindset that women are weak. Escalating his criticism of the Congress-RJD combine, he said, My mother had nothing to do with politics, so why was she abused by RJD-Congress? These abuses are an insult to entire mothers, sisters and daughters. Mother is my world. My mother was abused from dais of RJD-Congress, I never imagined it would happen; it was an insult to mothers and daughters of Bihar, he said in a tone surcharged with emotion. A man identified as Rizvi alias Raja of Bhopura village in Darbhanga district of Bihar was arrested by the police after a video clip of him hurling abuses at the prime minister went viral on social media. Taking a direct attack on the RJD, Bihars main Opposition party, PM Modi claimed the party never wanted women to progress. It never want to let women progress and that is why RJD always opposed even women reservation, he alleged, just a day after the RJD-Congress and other allied parties held the Voters Adhikar Rally in Patna. Criticising the Congress, he said, The Congress has never tolerated any backward or extremely backward person progresses ahead. The Congress thinks that it is the right of the big names to abuse the workers hence they start abusing people, the Prime Minister said.
