Bihar sex workers set to foray into culinary world
PATNA: Sex workers of Bihars Muzaffarpur are poised to foray into a new world -- cooking famous Champaran handi (earthen pot) mutton and selling it to customers who value its test. Dancing and providing services to customers visiting their homes in Chaturbhujsthan red light area of the town will soon become a thing of the past. Gopal Kushwaha, the proprietor of Champaran Handi Mutton fame, on Sunday started imparting training to 10 sex workers of the red light area of Muzaffarpur. He provided one months raw material and utensils free of cost for preparing mutton. Juli Khatoon, Soni Parveen, Gudia, Chanda and Rehana were among the 10 women of the redlight area who were imparted training on cooking the mutton. The profession we are associated with is looked down upon. Its a dirty world. The training to cook mutton will open doors for numerous sex workers who want to get rid of this age-old profession, said Juli. There was no alternative means of survival. Now we have got it and want to exploit the opportunity to keep our future generation out of this dark and dingy world, she said. Chanda said she would provide online service to customers of Champaran handi mutton in the town. Majority of girls and women of our age are looking for an alternative means of survival. They want to liberate themselves from this dirty trade, she said. The novel initiative of Kushwaha has received appreciation not only from officials but also from social workers. Kushwaha said he has assured the sex workers and their children to help opening shops in Muzaffarpur town or elsewhere they wish. Naseema Khatoon, founder of NGO Parchum working for uplift of sex workers, said Kushwaha had discussed the idea of providing training on Champaran Handi Mutton to sex workers. I assured him full cooperation. The day came on Sunday when the training programme for sex workers was launched, she said. Naseema, daughter of a sex worker, is now a member of the National Human Rights Commission Advisory Group. She said she would request to Muzaffarpur district authority to provide shops to the sex workers along Marine Drive (riverfront of the town) or some other locations. She said Kushwahas efforts will help women of redlight area to become self-reliant and not to depend on their traditional profession. Chaturbhujsthan red light area has a population of about 1000. Majority of them are engaged in performing dance at cultural-wedding events and meeting customers. Its unfortunate that some women are still engaged in the profession, which dates backs to Mughal period, said Vivek Kumar, who is making a documentary on Kushwahas initiative on changing the lifestyle of sex workers of Muzaffarpur.
Poverty drives woman to sell her toddler to repay loan
PATNA: A poverty-stricken woman was forced to sell off her child for a paltry Rs 9,000 to repay her bank loan in Bihars Araria district, an official said on Saturday. On learning about the incident, the police immediately swung into action. They recovered the child from his relatives house, where he was kept before being handed over finally to a Bengaluru-based issueless woman. The woman was in search of a child and had promised to pay Rs 2 lakh in exchange for the child. While the childs parents Mohammad Haroon and Rehana Khatoon -- are in police custody for questioning, the boy has been handed over to the child welfare committee on Saturday. Rehana Khatoon claimed that her brother Tanveer sold the child to a co-villager, Mohammad Arif, and paid her Rs 9,000 on Sunday. She told the police that she was not aware of the amount Tanveer had received from Arif for selling her son. Arifs relatives are claiming he paid Rs 45,000 to get possession of the child. Blaming her impoverished life for the crime, Rehana said that she was forced to sell her child as she was unable to pay her bank loan of Rs 50,000 due to financial constraints. She claimed that the bank employees had also started to harass her. I was under tremendous pressure as the installment of the loan which I had taken from a private finance company was due for the past three months. Agents of the money lending company were harassing us and even threatened to sue them for their failure to repay the loan. My brother Tanveer advised me to sell off one of the eight children to repay the loan, Rehana told the interrogators. The couple residing in Pachira panchayat of Raniganj block in Araria district has eight childrenfive sons and three daughters. Gurfan, one-and-a-half-year-old, is the youngest among them. Gurfan was sent to his maternal uncle Tanveers house on Sunday, where he was handed over to Mohammad Arif, a resident of Dumaria. The police recovered the child safely from Arifs house. Station house officer (SHO) of Raniganj police station, Nirmal Kumar Yadvendu, said that the child has been handed over to the child welfare committee of the district. The parents of the child have been detained for interrogation. Some other relatives have also been picked up for questioning to ascertain the truth, he asserted. The childs relative Arsadi said that Rehana had gone to Arifs house with Rs 9000 to take back her son, but he (Arif) refused on the plea that he had paid Rs 45,000 for the child. Rehana had collected money from villagers who provided the sum after they learned about the shocking incident. She told the police that Arif had taken huge money from a Bengaluru-based woman who wished to adopt a child (as she childless). Araria is close to the Nepal border. Child trafficking incidents are a common feature in the bordering districts of Bihar. In 2016, Rukmani and Sandeep Meena of a village in Patna district sold their nine-year-old son to a mediator in Indore to repay a loan of Rs 20,000. The same year, a Muzaffarpur district based man Himanshu Ranjan sold off his wife and two daughters aged about five years and three years to pay back a loan of Rs 4 lakh. A similar case came to light in Samastipur district in 2012 when one Parvati Devi sold her 18-month-old son to clear debt of Rs 15,000.

Cabinet Approves Rs.6,798-Cr Rail Projects to Enhance Connectivity and Cut CO2 Emissions
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given the green light to two significant railway projects worth Rs.6,798 crore. These initiatives, spearheaded by the Ministry of Railways, aim to improve connectivity, lower logistics costs, and reduce carbon emissions over the next five years. The first project focuses on doubling the railway lines between Narkatiaganj, Raxaul, Sitamarhi, and Darbhanga, covering a total distance of 256 kilometers. This upgrade will facilitate better access to Nepal, northeastern India, and other border areas, benefiting both passenger and freight services. The second project involves the construction of a new railway line connecting Errupalem and Namburu via Amaravati, stretching 57 kilometers through Andhra Pradeshs NTR, Vijayawada, Guntur districts, and Telanganas Khammam district. Together, these projects will impact eight districts across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar, adding 313 kilometers to the Indian Railways network. The new railway line will directly serve 168 villages and benefit approximately 1.2 million residents. Meanwhile, the multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity for 388 villages and improve access for around 900,000 people in the Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur regions. These capacity enhancements are vital for the efficient transport of various goods, including agricultural products, coal, steel, and cement, with an anticipated increase in freight traffic by 31 million tonnes each year. Environmentally, the projects are projected to cut CO2 emissions by 168 crore kilograms, which is comparable to planting seven crore trees. These efforts are part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasizes seamless, multi-modal connectivity throughout India. The proposed new line will provide direct access to Amaravati, the planned capital of Andhra Pradesh, improving mobility for industries and local residents. This development is expected to boost efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways, according to the CCEA. Furthermore, the multi-tracking initiative will alleviate operational challenges and reduce congestion, offering essential infrastructure development for some of the busiest railway sections in the country. Bihar excise officials intercept oil tanker smuggling beer in Bihar's Muzaffarpur
PATNA: An oil tanker in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district was found delivering liquor instead of oil on Wednesday About 200 beer crates were found in an oil tanker carrying logo of Hindustan Petroleum. The tanker carrying the registration number of Nagaland was intercepted by a team of excise department officials on Sakri-Sariaya on the Muzaffarpur-Hajipur road. On seeing the excise department team, the driver and an illicit liquor trader fled after abandoning the tanker on the national highway. The raiding team chased them, but they managed to escape leaving behind the tanker on the busy road. On being searched, beer crates were found. Assistant Excise Commissioner Vijay Shankar Dubey said that acting on a tip-off that liquor was being smuggled to Bihar from Arunachal Pradesh in an oil tanker, a team was deployed to track the vehicle and a road-blockade was put up for the purpose. When the members of the excise department team tried to intercept, the driver turned the vehicle towards another road. However, it was finally seized and illicit liquor recovered, the assistant excise commissioner revealed. He said that efforts were on to ascertain the identity of the local receiver who had booked the consignment. A case has been registered in this connection, Dubey said, adding that raids were on to arrest the accused. The seized vehicle has been brought to the excise police station. The manufacture, sale and storage of liquor is completely banned in Bihar under the new excise and prohibition policy 2016. As a result, liquor smugglers devise novel ways to transport liquor from outside the state. Earlier, liquor was found being transported in ambulances and trucks fitted with special compartments to store liquor bottles. Fruits like watermelon was also used to smuggle liquor. Last week, state hit the headlines after the death of 37 persons in a hooch tragedy that took place in Siwan, Saran and Gopalganj districts.

Police resort to lathicharge to disperse mob of flood victims in Bihar, deny report of firing
PATNA: Police resorted to baton charge to disperse a mob of flood victims indulged in putting up road blockade, stone pelting and arson in Bihars Muzaffarpur district on Friday. The authorities, however, denied the report of police firing and said that only a mild force was used to bring the situation under control. The incident took place near Gopalpur village under the Bedaul police outpost when a group of flood victims put up road blockade and indulged in arson on the National Highway 77 connecting Sitamarhi with Muzaffarpur. The flood victims were irked over closure of community kitchen, which was started by the district administration soon after the victims were evacuated to safer places. The road blockade led to traffic jam on the busy road. A police team attached to the Bedaul police outpost rushed to the spot to remove the blockade. Initially, the police tried to convince the protestors but in vain. The situation, however, turned worse when police used force to lift the road blockade. The protestors later pelted stones at the police team, which had to retreat to save their lives. Additional reinforcement was requisitioned from the district headquarters as the situation was going out of control. The protestors were not in a mood to relent. The police resorted to lathicharge and opened four rounds in the air to disperse the unruly mob. Though nobody was injured in the police firing, a police officer sustained injuries in the stone pelting. Vidya Sagar, superintendent of police (SP), rural, Muzaffarpur, said that the police resorted to baton charge to quell the protestors indulging in stone pelting, road blockade and arson. Now the situation is under control. An additional police force has been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure, he told this newspaper over phone. The SP, rural, however, denied the report of police firing and said that such rumours were spread by the protestors to defame the administration. The police-initiated action to restore traffic on the national highway as the queue of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road stretched to about five kilometres from the spot, he added. The locals said that the flood victims were not happy with the district authoritys decision to close community kitchen, which was started after people were evacuated to safer places after floods inundated their houses and destroyed their standing crops. Lack of fodder for their animal added fuel to the fire. Earlier, chief minister Nitish Kumar visited Darbhanga district to take stock of the situation arising out of floods. He also visited a community kitchen run for the flood victims in the district and asked the officials concerned to ensure adequate facilities at the flood relief camps. Later talking to media persons, Nitish said that Rs.7,000 each would be provided to the flood victims of 17 districts in the state. I have asked the authorities concerned to deposit the amount in the bank accounts of the flood victims before Dussehra festival, he said. Earlier, he conduced aerial survey of the flood hit districts. At a review meeting, Nitish directed the senior officers to monitor the arrangements for flood victims at the government run relief camps on a regular basis.
SC order convicts RJD leader Munna Shukla in 1998 murder of former minister Brij Bihari Prasad
PATNA: The Supreme Court order upholding conviction of former MLA and senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Vijay Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla and one other in connection with the 1998 murder of former minister Brij Bihari has heated up the political temperature in Bihar. Munna Shukla, former MLA from Lalganj in Vaishali district, unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Vaishali on the ticket of Lalu Prasads Rashtriya Janata Dal. He was pitted against sitting Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Veena Devi. While Munna Shukla and Mantu Tiwari have been awarded life imprisonment in the case and asked to surrender within 15 days, former Balia MP Surajbhan Singh alias Suraj Singh and six others have been acquitted for lack of evidence. In 2014, the Patna high court had acquitted all the accused. Brij Bihari, then a minister in Rabri Devi government, was shot dead by armed men in the premises of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) under Shashtrinagar police station in Patna on June 13, 1998. He was undergoing treatment in judicial custody. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Brij Bihari Prasad in April 1998 in connection with merit scam. The SC verdict in the murder case has come as a major jolt to the states main opposition RJD. Munna Shukla, who comes from Upper caste Bhumihar, is an influential leader of RJD in Vaishali and Muzaffarpur region. He is a native of Khanjahachak village (Jalalpur) in Vaishali district. RJD fielded Munna Shukla from Vaishali with a view to creating a division in the Bhumihar votes but people from his own caste didnt favour him (Shukla). As a result, Veena Devi, the two-time MP from Vaishali, retained the seat even in 2024 Lok Sabha election, said Manohar Prasad, a resident of Lalganj. Munna is the younger brother of don-turned politician Kaushalendra Shukla alias Chotan Shukla, who was gunned down by armed men near Brahmapura overbridge in Muzaffarpur district while returning from canvassing on December 4, 1994. Chotan was set to contest upcoming assembly polls from Kesaria in East Champaran district on the ticket of erstwhile Bihar Peoples Party (BPP) led by former MP Anand Mohan. Brij Bihari Prasad, RJD MLA from Adapur in East Champaran district, was blamed for Chotans murder. People believe that Brij Bihari Prasad was emerging as a prominent backward leader after the killing of former MLA Devendra Nath Dubey, a day before the repoll on some polling booths in Motihari Lok Sabha election held in 1998. Dubey had contested the Lok Sabha election against RJD candidate Rama Devi, wife of Brij Bihari Prasad. Rama Devi emerged victorious from the seat but killing of Devendra Dubey led to animosity between Dubeys supporters and those of Brij Bihari Prasad. The murder of Chotan Shukla in Muzaffarpur on December 4, 1998, forced his supporters to take revenge of the incident. Hence, the conspiracy to eliminate Brij Bihari Prasad was hatched, which was successfully executed on June 13, 1998. A notorious criminal of Uttar Pradesh, Sri Prakash Shukla, was hired for the purpose as it was an arduous task to kill him in the hospital. Brij Bihari was provided five commandos and four personnel of Bihar Military Police (BMP) for his round the clock security. Shukla, a dare-devil shooter, was assigned the task. He spent several weeks as a patient in the IGIMS to keep a close watch on the movement of Brij Bihari. On the fateful day, he along with others shot dead Brij Bihari and his bodyguard when he had gone for evening stroll. Sri Prakash Shukla, Surajbhan Singh (former MP), Lallan Singh, Mukesh Singh, Ram Niranjan Choudhary, Munna Shukla, Mantu Tiwari, Bhupendra Dubey (former MLA), Rajan Tiwari, Satish Pandey were among the accused in the case lodged with Shashtri Nagar police station in Patna. The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation after the deceaseds wife Rama Devi alleged that her husbands murder was a fallout of political conspiracy, and he was killed at the behest of some influential leader. Rama Devi later joined BJP and won Lok Sabha election from Sheohar in 2014 and 2019. Altogether nine accused were put to trial. The lower court convicted eight of them--Surajbhan Singh, Mukesh Singh, Lallan Singh, mantu Tiwari, Captain Sunil, Ram Niranjan Choudhary, Shashi Kumar Rai and Munna Shukla--(as one of the named accused had died) and awarded life sentence on August 12, 2009. In contrary, the Patna high court acquitted them for lack of evidence in July 2014. Mantu Tiwari, a resident of Kudarkat village under Chauradano police station limit in East Champaran district, is the nephew (sisters son) of slain leader Devendra Dubey. Both Shukla and Tiwari have been asked to surrender in court in 15 days. Sri Prakash was killed in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh police in September 1998. The SC verdict came on Thursday after the CBI and deceaseds wife Rama Devi challenged the high courts order.
Severe flooding in the Aurai block of Muzaffarpur in the area has caused many residents to move out from their waterlogged homes. Moreover, community kitchens have been set up to assist the affected families.

PATNA: Bihar cadre IPS officer Shivdeep Wamanrao Lande resigned from service on Thursday. The 2006-batch IPS officer had been posted as Inspector General (IG), Purnea range. He was transferred from Tirhut range (Muzaffarpur) to Purnea range recently. Lande, known to be an upright and honest officer, is the second officer to resign from Indian Police Service (IPS) in the past two months. Earlier, Kamya Mishra, a 2019-batch IPS officer, had resigned from service citing personal reasons. She was posted as SP, rural Darbhanga in Bihar. Lande shared the information about his resignation from IPS on social media. In his post, he said that he served the state for almost 18 years and always gave priority to his job. I have resigned from IPS, but I will remain in Bihar as it is my karmabhoomi, he said in his emotional post. Lande, a native of Maharashtra, hit the headlines when he was posted as SP, Rohtas. He had launched a massive crackdown against illegal stone crusher units operating in the district. He initiated tough action against stone crusher units owned by some political heavyweights as well. He, however, gained more popularity while serving as City SP, Patna. His action against ruffians had instilled confidence among girls who used to message him about their ordeal while going to schools and colleges. Girls used to send their messages even at night. His stint as SP, Araria was also remarkable. Before being promoted to IG, Lande served as DIG, Kosi range. This is not good that two IPS officers of Bihar have resigned from their service in such a short span, a retired IPS officer Amitabh Kumar Das said. Das, who was given forced voluntary retirement, said that the government should think over frequent resignation of Bihar cadre IPS officers. It sends a wrong message about the states work culture, he added. Kamya Mishra, a native of Odisha, was apparently not happy with the manner the gruesome murder of a politicians father was being probed. Her husband Awadhesh Saroj Dixit is also an IPS officer and posted in Bihar.

According to GRP Kanpur Central, Prashant had got a job on compensatory grounds and was posted at Begusarai railway station under Sonpur division of East Central Railway. Around 2:30 am on Wednesday, a minor girl travelling with her parents, grandmother, and younger brother (9), complained to her mother that Prashant had touched her inappropriately during the journey. As soon as the mother of the minor girl confronted Prashant, the other passengers, along with the girls father, pounded on Prashant and assaulted him. Prashant was booked under the POCSO Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 74 (Assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage a womans modesty). According to police sources, Prashants relative didnt give any written complaint over his death. Prashants relative informed that he was not in contact with the family, although he was married. He was suffering from depression. Further, since the train was not regular, but a special one, there were no RPF or GRP squads on the train. The family hails from Siwan district of Bihar but is settled in Sector-12 of Gurugram.

Guwahati: Assamese actress and social media influencer Sumi Bora and her husband, who were detained in connection with the multi-crore online stock trading scam by the Special Task Force (STF) on Thursday, have been handed over to police in Dibrugarh, officials said. The STF has handed over both of them to the police over the case registered in Dibrugarh sadar police station related to the trading scam, SP Rakesh Reddy told reporters here. He said the police will conduct further investigation and record a detailed statement of Bora and her husband Tarkik. The duo had been absconding for the last 11 days. After conducting the necessary procedures, we will apprise the media about the latest developments, the SP said. A senior officer had earlier told PTI that the STF detained them in Dibrugarh, and they will be handed over to police. DGP G P Singh had also posted on X a photograph of the duo with their faces blackened. The game is up for them. Compliments to the Team STF, he said. He, however, did not name them. Meanwhile, Tarkik's brother Amlan Bora, arrested in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday, will also be brought to Dibrugarh by Thursday evening, another officer said. A 'look out' notice was issued against the duo and four others after they failed to appear before the police, following the arrest of the prime accused, 22-year-old Bishal Phukan, in the case. The actress and choreographer, in a video message to a few local television channels, had on Wednesday claimed that she will 'surrender and fully cooperate with the police'. Phukan, who owned the company that duped investors, was arrested along with his manager in Dibrugarh last week. During the investigation, it was found that Phukan had allegedly spent lavishly on Bora, including her high-profile wedding in Rajasthan's Udaipur. The probe was taken over by the CID and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to look into the allegations.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav embarks on Karyakarta Samvad Yatra from Samastipur
PATNA: RJD leader and former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday embarked on Karyakarta Samvad Yatra from Samastipur to have a direct dialogue with party workers. Tejashwi will also take feedback from party workers on the performance of sitting MLAs as many be denied of tickets if found unsatisfactory in delivering results, commented a senior RJD leader. Tejashwi said that he would get to know the ground reality by directly interacting with party workers under the Karyakarta Samvad Karyakram. In the first phase, he would participate in the programmes to be organised in Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani and Muzaffarpur districts. Talking to mediapersons in Samastipur, the RJD leader also targeted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by alleging that people had lost faith in him. People are in a desperate situation owing to alleged high unemployment, poverty, migration, rising crime graph and corruption, he added. We will build a new Bihar with a new vision. If our party forms government in Bihar, it will formulate policies for various social groups as per the caste-based survey report to reach all round development, he remarked. He said that Bihar's per capita income was lowest in the country and the number of people living below poverty line had also risen. He alleged that while Nitish and his leaders continue to make comments against him, they remain silent over their failures. Out of RJD's total 75 seats, its performance in 21 assembly constituencies in the last Lok Sabha election was found to be unsatisfactory with party candidates getting lesser number of votes in comparison to their rival NDAcandidates. In other districts, including Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Begusarai, Hajipur, and Purnea, protesters attempted to block traffic and burned tyres, but were quickly dispersed by security forces. At Darbhanga and Buxar railway stations, a large number of protesters halted the Bihar Sampark Kranti and Farakka Express trains, following which the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and district police were deployed to cleared the stations. East Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Sharswati Chandra confirmed that train services were disrupted in Ara, Chausa (Buxar), Darbhanga, Begusarai, and Rajgir, but the situation was promptly controlled. Independent Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, led demonstrations in Patna and other areas, criticising the NDA government's stance on SC/ST reservations. He claimed that the government aims to undermine reservations for SC/ST and other backward classes. Talking to reporters in Purnea, Yadav said, The NDA government at the Centre is against reservation to SC/ST and other extremely backward classes. The Centre wants to snatch reservations given to SC/ST and other extremely backward classes. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other partners of the INDIA bloc extended their support to the bandh. The Bharat Bandh was called by 21 organisations across the country in response to the Supreme Court's August 1 ruling allowing states to sub-classify Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for granting quotas within these groups. The apex court's majority verdict held that such sub-classifications are permissible to benefit more underprivileged castes within these categories.
Bharat bandh over SC-ST reservation evokes mixed response across India
The Bharat Bandh called by several groups on Wednesday to protest the Supreme Courts recent verdict on the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) elicited varied reactions across the country. While some regions saw significant disruptions, others remained largely unaffected, with the bandh receiving mixed support from different political and social organisations. In Jharkhand, the bandh led to partial disruptions as public buses stayed off the roads and schools remained closed in several areas, including the state capital, Ranchi. Chief Minister Hemant Soren cancelled his visit to Palamu due to the strike. The states ruling alliancecomprising the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)backed the bandh, along with Left parties. Despite the support, the impact was uneven across the state, with some parts witnessing protests while others continued business as usual. Security was heightened at key locations to prevent any untoward incidents. BSP extends support to Bharat Bandh by Dalit, Adivasi groups against top court order on sub-classification of SCs In Madhya Pradesh, the state home department had issued directives to district authorities to ensure law and order during the bandh. Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh extended his support to the bandh, voicing concerns over the Supreme Courts decision. However, the overall impact of the bandh in the state remained minimal, with authorities successfully managing to keep disruptions in check. Odisha witnessed partial disruptions in rail and road services. Agitators detained trains at Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur, while passenger buses refrained from operating on several routes. Despite these interruptions, government offices, banks, and educational institutions functioned normally. Security was beefed up across the state, particularly in the secretariat and other important government buildings. In Bihar, the bandh briefly disrupted vehicular traffic in some districts. In Jehanabad, protestors clashed with security personnel as they attempted to block National Highway-83. Similar attempts were made in Madhepura and Muzaffarpur, but security forces quickly dispersed the protestors. Meanwhile, recruitment exams for police constables continued as scheduled, with the state government ensuring smooth transportation for candidates. In Rajasthan, while some districts observed near-total shutdowns, others saw only partial impact, with essential services continuing largely uninterrupted. The SC ST Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti's rally in Jaipur has drawn significant attention, as community members express their discontent with the ruling, fearing it could weaken the foundational principles of reservation. Despite the bandh's peaceful nature so far, authorities remain vigilant, ensuring that public safety and order are maintained throughout the day. The Bharat Bandh was called by 21 organisations across the country in response to the Supreme Court's August 1 decision, which empowered states to make sub-classifications within SCs and STs for granting reservations. The protesting groups argue that the verdict undermines the basic principles of reservation and could potentially harm the marginalized communities. While some states and regions experienced significant disruptions, others saw minimal impact. The varied response to the bandh underscores the differing levels of support and concern regarding the Supreme Courts ruling on community-based reservations. The girls mutilated body was found in a village pond under Paroo police station, a day after she was kidnapped from her house on August 11. The detainee is charged with helping the main accused escape from the village after the incident was reported to the local police. Tejashwi Yadav slams Nitish Kumar over rising cases of rape-murder in Bihar
PATNA: Amid nation-wide outrage over rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in West Bengal, Bihar former Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav slammed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his failure to check rising crime in the state. Tejashwi alleged that crimes against women in the state have gone up, particularly in the recent few days. Referring to the Muzaffarpur incident in which a Dalit minor girl was kidnapped, gang raped and murdered, Tejashwi said, This is the tip of the iceberg. He condemned the district police for their delayed response, stating that it took them four days to file an FIR. Despite the victims brother reporting injuries and swelling on private parts, it took another four days for the authorities to arrange an ultrasound test. Tejashwis comments came ahead of his state-wide yatra to highlight the deteriorating law and order situation and Nitishs failure to exert pressure on the Centre to concede long pending demand for special category status to Bihar. RJD leader recently released crime data to substantiate his allegation against the state police and rising crime graph in the state. He referred to recent crimes, including the hacking of a 19-year-old girl with an axe in Madhuban (East Champaran) and the murder of a 27-year-old woman in Vaishali. These incidents, in last few days, reflect a disturbing trend where criminals and rapists, emboldened by political protection, are operating with impunity in Bihar, Tejashwi said while uploading a post on social media platform X. Earlier on August 13, the RJD leader released crime data detailing 43 criminal cases in the state, as part of his ongoing effort to draw attention to worsening safety and security conditions under NDA rule. Nitish had come to power in November 2005 blaming the RJD government for the poor law and order situation and a complete anarchy in the state.
