Opposition slams CM Nitish Kumar over 'erratic' behaviour during national anthem at Patna event
PATNA: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has come under fire of the Opposition following his erratic behaviour during the national anthem played at a sporting event in the state capital. On Saturday, CPI-ML (Liberation), an ally of RJD led grand alliance, hit out at Nitish, saying that he should resign as he was unable to run the state. CPI-ML (Liberation) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya turned to X saying that the recent public utterances and conduct of the chief minister Nitish Kumar were sufficient to prove that he was no longer in a position to discharge his duties as the chief minister of the state. Is Nitish Kumar still fit to discharge the responsibilities of a Chief Minister? On #BiharDiwas2025 , Bihar needs clarity about the conditions of the Chief Minister. His public conduct and utterances increasingly indicate that something is seriously wrong. https://t.co/L3AQzJm1zR pic.twitter.com/1mflnyi1zJ Dipankar (@Dipankar_cpiml) March 22, 2025 The CPI-ML (Liberation) leader also criticised the BJP, a major ally of NDA both at the centre and in the state, for maintaining a silence over the health condition of the chief minister even though the saffron party had made it a big issue in Odisha. Even PM Narendra Modi had spoken about the health condition of then chief minister Naveen Patnaik. But PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were keeping mum over the health condition of Bihar chief minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar. Everybody is aware of the health condition of Nitish except PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Dipankar said, adding that the eccentric behaviour of Nitish during an official function in Patna on Thursday showed that he was not in a position to run the state. Earlier in the day, RJD pasted posters outside the residence of former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi criticising Nitish Kumar for disrespecting to the national anthem. The posters, featuring the words Nayak nahi khalnayak hoon main (I am not a hero, I am a villain), aimed at expressing the partys growing discontent with Nitishs actions. RJD workers also burnt the effigies of the chief minister at district headquarters to vent their protest against the CMs erratic behaviour and causing disrespect to the national anthem in full public view. The controversy erupted after a purported video went viral on social media, showing Nitish speaking and greeting while the national anthem played at an official function in the state capital on Thursday. The video caused a backlash, with many calling out the chief minister for disrespecting the national anthem. A complaint petition was also filed in a Muzaffarpur court, seeking action against the chief minister for disrespecting the national anthem. The petition sought action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act. On the other hand, RJD national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad defended the chief minister saying that the Opposition has no issue against the ruling NDA, so they were raising such issues. There is nothing objectionable. The Opposition is unnecessarily blowing it out of proportion, a JD(U) spokesperson said. He claimed that Nitish was is 100 per cent physically and mentally fit to run the state. There is no need to conduct his medical examination and a health bullet on his health, as demanded by some opposition leaders, he told the media. On Friday, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kumar said that the government should issue a medical bulletin on the health condition of Nitish. This is a serious issue as it is related to the fate of nearly 13 crore people of Bihar, he remarked.

Insider track | Rajiv Gauba in the reckoning again
Rajiv Gauba in the reckoning again There is a strong buzz in the political circles that former cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba may soon get a place in the Narendra Modis ministry. A reshuffle is expected around June or July. People in the know say if Gauba doesnt make it to the cabinet, then he is likely to get a governor role. Gauba served as cabinet secretary, with his term being extended four timeseach for one-year periods. The close working relationship between Gauba and PM Modi has led to speculation about his possible inclusion in the cabinet. Given his impressive track record, Gauba could be assigned a significant portfolio, possibly similar to how S Jaishankar, also a former diplomat, was brought in for his expertise. Gaubas administrative experience, especially in national security, positions him as a strong candidate for roles such as IT minister or MoS Home. A graduate in Physics from Patna University, Gaubas career is marked by handling high-stakes situations, including the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and overseeing elections in Muzaffarpur and Gaya. His expertise in international economics even led to his appointment as Senior Adviser to the Executive Director at IMF in Washington. Known for his role in shaping the National Action Plan to combat Left-Wing Extremism and contributing to the peaceful revocation of Article 370, Gauba has a distinguished career. The importance of Vivek Joshi Vivek Joshi, a 1989-batch Haryana cadre IAS officer, appears to be a man of all seasons in the government, as he was assigned three important roles within a span of six months. Joshi from becoming Secretary to the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) to Chief Secretary of Haryana to ending up as the Election Commissioner within the same period indicates that he happened to be the most-sought-after officer. Barely three months before he was appointed as the Election Commissioner, on the request of the Haryana government, the Centre repatriated him to his home cadre and allowed him to be appointed as the Chief Secretary of the state on November 1, 2024. On February 19, he joined the Election Commission as one of the two Commissioners. He held the position of Secretary DoPT only for less than two and a half months before being shifted from Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance on August 19, where he could remain in office only till October 31. Earlier, Joshi had nearly 2-year stints both as Secretary DFS and Registrar General and Census Commissioner, where he took charge in January 2019. Railway asks RITES to design proposed permanent holding areas at railway stations
NEW DELHI: Following the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station which killed at least 18 people including four children, the Ministry of Railways has instructed Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) to design 'permanent holding areas' (PHAs) at 60 stations across the country for crowd management. These stations have been selected based on the sudden increased crowd surges during special occasions like Holi, Diwali, Chhatha and other festivals. So far, permanent holding areas (PHAs) have been developed at only 9 stations in and around Prayagraj in UP. These holding areas are located outside the platforms to help control the flow of passengers and prevent overcrowding. In view of emerging crowds of passengers for Mahakumbh ahead of Mahashivratri, falling this year on February 26, passengers holding areas on temporary basis have also been created at Patna junction, Danapur, Ara, Buxar, Sasaram Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Hajipur, Samastipur and other railway stations following the massive origination of passengers towards Mahakumbh, a senior official working with the Ministry of Railway told this newspaper. The temporary passenger holding areas have also been created at Deendayal Upadhyay Railway station, formerly known as Mughalsarai, under the east Central Railway. Upon being asked about the progress on the plan for the construction of the proposed holding areas, the railway official said, The RITES has been instructed to start working on the design of permanent holding areas keeping every factors in mind. After the design is readied by the RITES, the Ministry of Railway after wider discussion approves it and move ahead in mission mode for 60 railway stations. Many stations in Bihar, UP and other states witness sudden surges in crowds of passengers during festivals like Saharsa. Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Udna, New Delhi and other stations also witness sharp surges in number of passengers during festivals. After final design of PHAs is readied and approved, all amenities like ticketing zones, wi-fi, eateries stalls, and others would be made available in each of PHAs. Not only this, by doing some changes in the Amrit stations, the permanent holding area would also be created to control crowds during peak time, said an official. As it is roughly being estimated, the Ministry will have to spend between Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore for the development of these permanent holding areas as part of a larger effort to improve crowd management at major stations. Railway Ministry orders platform X to remove videos of New Delhi railway station stampede For the time being, in view to keep emerging crowds for Mahakumbh, massive holding areas at Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar, New Delhi, Ayodhya Dham, Vanaras ,Ballia, Siwan, Deoria, Chhapra, Rajendranagar in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Barauni, Jaynagar, Madhubani, Raxaul, and Gaya have been created by the railway. Passengers are allowed to enter the platforms based on the scheduled departure times of their trains. This initiative aims to improve crowd management and enhance passenger safety, especially during peak hours and festive seasons, the official said. Meanwhile, UP CM Yogi Aditaynath appreciated the railway for arrangements to the Mahakumbh-bound passengers. He said that more than 13,500 trains including more than 3500 special trains are in service for the Mahakumbh. The 48 digital ticketing, multilingual announcements and conveniences being provided to passengers reflect the railway's commitment, he said.

The party hopes her entry will help consolidate the Luv-Kush (Kurmi-Koeri) vote base. Shobhas induction comes when the RJD is trying hard to make inroads into the Kushwaha vote bank. In the last Lok Sabha polls, it had fielded three Kushwaha candidates. It appointed Abhay Kushwaha, who won the election from Aurangabad, as its parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha. Shobha was also a member of the Bihar State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights. A prominent leader of the Dhanuk caste (listed as EBC in Bihar), Ajay Rai from Bhagalpur, also joined JD (U) on the occasion. The JD (U) claimed he supported former poll strategist Prashant Kishors Jan Suraaj Party. Recently, former JD (U) vice president Mangani Lal Mandal was inducted into the RJD by party leader Tejashwi Yadav. With the help of Mandal, Tejashwi is trying to woo the EBC vote bank. The EBC support is considered crucial for getting and retaining power in Bihar. This has been Nitishs core vote bank for the last 20 years. In the previous Lok Sabha elections, he had inducted Mukesh Sahni into the alliance to make inroads into the Mallah vote bank. Mandals influence is believed to be in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur and Muzaffarpur of north Bihar. He has been an MLA and MP from Jhanjharpur. This time, RJD celebrated former chief minister Karpoori Thakurs birth anniversary in Madhubani districts Phulparas on Friday, considered as the Karmabhhomi of Thakur, who was also from the EBC category. In the 2020 assembly election, the grand alliance could not perform well in Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani and Muzaffarpur. While the RJD won 11, Congress and CPI (M) won a seat each in Muzaffarpur and Samastipur.

The FIRs against them have been lodged at four police stations of the district, he said. We have registered FIRs against 53 officers. If they fail to hand over the files in the next one week, departmental proceedings will also be initiated against them, Gopalganj SP Avdhesh Dixit told PTI over phone, without elaborating further. All 53 police officers have been booked under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In December last year, FIRs were lodged against 134 police officers in Muzaffarpur district for taking with them case files to their new places of posting, hampering investigation into over 900 cases, the sources said.
