JeM planning Delhi-like blast in J&K: Intelligence sources

NEW DELHI: Latest intelligence inputs have suggested that Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is planning a recent Delhi and 2019-Pulwama-like high-intensity Vehicle-Bound IED (VB-IED) blast in Kashmir Valley, sources said on Tuesday. In the view of the alert, an advisory has been sent to the J&K police and the civil administration to keep high vigil across the Union Territory, as JeM operatives, who have acquired the skill of exploding bombs in a moving car, which they used in the recent Delhis Red Fort blast and also during Pulwama terror attack against a CFPF convoy in 2019. Sharing details of a highly classified intelligence input, which has been sent to all the security formations in Jammu & Kashmir, sources said that the JeM is suspected of planning another VB-IED blast in the UT, particularly in South Kashmir. They said that the latest input is in continuity with earlier alerts, which had suggested that elements from across the western borders with active support from Pakistans ISI have been preparing coordinated attacks in Delhi, Jammu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradeshs Ayodhya, and Gujarat. Security apparatus are of the view that the prevailing situation demanded immediate and intense vigilance, particularly with respect to abandoned or unfamiliar vehicles, which have been repeatedly linked to the attack methodology witnessed in the recent blast. Personnel deployed at Nakas (checkpoints) and Road Opening Parties (ROPs) have been instructed to treat such vehicles with maximum suspicion, the sources said, adding that instructions have been passed on to seniors to brief their personnel to keep maximum vigil, particularly with regard to abandoned items or suspicious vehicles in their respective jurisdictions. They said that the leadership in the J&K security architecture has also been asked to ensure increased vigil during the movement of forces in the UT to avoid any Pulwama-like incident. A VB-IED-type blast is basically executed using a moving vehicle, and Kashmir had seen such an incident in the past, when in 2019 terrorists hit an explosive-laden Maruti EECO car into a bus carrying CRPF personnel in a convoy in Pulwama, killing 40 jawans. In Delhi too, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is investigating the Red Fort Blast case, has termed it a VB-IED attack. Notably, the heightened alert follows a major breakthrough by the NIA in its probe into the Delhi blast, which killed 13 people and injured several. In a detailed press release issued on November 16, the NIA confirmed that the explosion was triggered using a vehicle-bound IED and announced the arrest of Amir Rashid Ali, a resident of Samboora, Pampore (J&K), who allegedly conspired with the suicide bomber, Umar Un Nabi. Senior security officials confirmed that the NIAs revelation that the Red Fort blast was a VB-IED-type attack has further reinforced our ongoing threat profile, especially the intelligence pointing to JeMs plans for a similar strike in in Kashmir and other parts of the country.

The artist behind Ayodhya Ram Temple's hall on being a keeper of culture

How many of you have visited the new Ayodhya temple? The ongoing construction, featuring intricate depictions of the Ramayana in its Shri Ram Darbar Hall, isnt just about architecture. Its about physically manifesting the very heart of Indian cultural identity: bhakti (devotion). I recently had the chance to catch the perspective of artist Vasudeo Kamath, known for his deep involvement, composing 85 episodes for the Darbar Hall. His approach highlights how genuine artistic interpretation can offer insights far beyond initial impressions. Vasudeo is a contemporary visual artist who engages with texts and immerses himself in this wisdom, bringing out evocative depictions of mythological themes from his own personal revelations. One of his self-portraits is very popular because it aligns with the profound account of Hanuman tearing his chest to reveal the image of Rama within. In another work, he shows Hanuman ushering a toddler into the textual tradition. At first glance, while the sentiment of bhakti is obvious, a deeper appreciation of the skill and thought involved reveals the artists true intent. When you pause and look closer, you might ask: Did he use Hanuman merely as a symbol of devotion, or did he want to catch the eye of Hanumans countless followers? Was he searching for a glimpse of the divine through the idea of Rama, or is he suggesting that we, too, can find Rama as he did? Vasudeo Kamath has contributed 85 episodes of Ramayana for the Shri Ram Darbar Hall in the new Ayodhya temple On his personal journey, Vasudeo shared, I established myself as an artist initially through portraits and landscape works. Realism came naturally to me; I was blessed with that talent. However, the stories my grandmother told me during my childhood had a profound impact. In fact, it is due to the insights from the story of the little squirrel the one that contributed to building the sethu (bridge) to Lanka that I began to use a small squirrel as a signature in many of my Ramayana works. By incorporating this motif, Vasudeo subtly suggests that his artistic efforts, however grand they may appear, are ultimately his humble offering, acting as a bridge between text and tradition. On whether he uses mythology to convey social norms, he shared a powerful response, My first work in the Ramayana began with an imagery of a self-portrait painting the subject through the unconditional love and loyalty of Hanuman for Sri Rama. I definitely enjoy reinterpreting the stories, presenting them with a personal touch, as they have offered me life lessons. Having said that, in some of my other works, I also want to initiate a conversation on contemporary social problems. My paintings of Janaka finding Sita from the dirt have a very strong feminine undertone. Through the portrayal of Ahalya, I wanted to initiate a discourse on social right and wrong. Curse and Redemption A deeper seeing of his work will highlight a resplendent Janaka gently handling Sita with an act of unconditional love and acceptance; the artist deftly contrasts it with the harsh realities faced by women in society. This reinterpretation does not alter the original story but rather brings its underlying values of compassion and respect to the forefront, making them relevant to modern discussions of gender equality. Similarly, his depiction of Sri Rama offering flowers to the stone Ahalya initiates a dialogue on justice and redemption. This delicate change in how it is portrayed immediately prompts the onlooker to think differently and invites them to re-engage. Overall, what is truly commendable about Vasudeo is that he achieves all this while maintaining respect for the original creator of the text, which is a testament to his skill and his informed understanding of the tradition. He is neither appropriating nor distorting the narratives but rather drawing out their inherent potential for social commentary and moral reflection. Soil and substance The threat of distorted interpretations While there are many visual artists like Vasudeo from traditional and contemporary disciplines who demonstrate an informed and respectful approach to re-interpreting Indian epics and mythology, there are also fringe segments within academia and popular culture who are dramatically contrasting in their approach. No doubt, different interpretations and perspectives are a natural part of academic rigour. Here is where it is best advisable for academics not initiated in oral traditions to tread carefully and be mindful such that the sentiment and intent of the original author is retained while reinterpreting. After all, bhakti is a profound, complex sentiment that serves as the underlying current binding Indias civilisational pillars the theories of justice, goodness, and beauty, including liberation. It manifests sometimes as pure devotion, sometimes as love, a combination of dedication and discipline, and many times as an unwavering faith. The layering of this sentiment as a guiding force for socio-politics, socio-economics, socio-cultural, and socio-religious life is also why it can deliver both divine justice and poetic justice so effortlessly. It is this core aspect of the sentiment that is sadly missed or intentionally overlooked by interpretations that prioritise an agenda over authentic engagement. Bhakti, gatekeeper of oral traditions Ultimately, appreciating the depth and meaning of bhakti through temple art and the work of artists like Vasudeo Kamath reveals a multifaceted sentiment that is deeply personal yet universally resonant. It is a sentiment that binds individuals to their cultural heritage, inspires ethical reflection, and finds expression in creative endeavours. The careful and authentic absorption of this sentiment, if not through traditional texts, at least from Indic art, serves as a vital means of keeping the civilisational undercurrent alive, ensuring that the wisdom and beauty of these ancient stories continue to inform and enrich contemporary life.

Ramayana from Sitas perspective gets epic Malayalam retelling

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ever heard of a lyrical retelling of Ramayana from Goddess Sitas perspective? A Sita, who even while bemoaning her fate as an orphan and a castaway, chose to walk into Mother Earths bosom, rather than return to take her rightful place as the Queen of Ayodhya. Chandrabati Ramayana, a 16th century work by Bengals first woman poet Chandrabati is one of the first versions of the epic that retells it from Sitas point of view. And now, it is available in Malayalam, as Chandrabati Ramayanam, thanks to writer Geethanjali Krishnan, who learnt Bengali and translated the work directly to Malayalam. In Geethanjalis own words, it took her almost three years, one to learn the language including the alphabets, and another two to translate. By 2024 end, I completed the work. Learning Bengali was not very difficult, as it shares similarities with Hindi and Malayalam. Bengali, Malayalam and Sanskrit have many Pali words, she said. In accordance with the erstwhile oral poetic traditions handed down generations and cutting across native tongues, Chandrabati Ramayana captures life through the female gaze, and reflects upon the trials and tribulations rural women were so accustomed to at the time. Chandrabatis take on Sita is in stark contrast with the widely-popular version. That this Ramayana hardly contains any reference to the battles waged in the course of Lord Rams life makes it unlike Valmikis rendition. I felt it needed to be retold in other languages, says Geethanjali Inspired by it, Geethanjali took it upon herself to translate Chandrabatis work into Malayalam. While many others have translated Bengali works to Malayalam, its the first direct translation of Chandrabati Ramayana to Malayalam. Being the first female Ramayanam, I felt it needed to be retold in other languages. Its one of the few such tales told from Sitas perspective. In many such tales, she is Ravanas daughter, she said. Geethanjalis translation has a foreword by translator Sunil Naliyath as well as elaborate notes by academic and writer, late Nabaneeta Deb Sen, and independent Bangla filmaker N Rashed Chowdhury. Poet K Jayakumar released the book in the state capital last week.

Road quality non-negotiable, officers and contractors to be held accountable: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari discussed Indias recent infrastructure developments with TNIE , citing a 60% expansion of the national highway network to over 1.46 lakh km. He outlined ongoing projects worth Rs 12.20 lakh crore, major highway corridors, city ring roads, reforms in land acquisition and environmental clearances, measures to ensure road maintenance accountability, the rollout of GPS-based toll collection, and Bihars progress relative to other states. Excerpts Q) The country has seen a massive expansion of its national highway network in recent years. What is the current status of this growth? Indias national highway network has surged from 91,287 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km today, a 60% increase. Currently, 48,536 km of projects worth Rs 12.20 lakh crore are underway, with completed schemes totaling Rs 16 lakh crore and upcoming projects at Rs 15 lakh crore. Sixteen major highway corridors, including the Arunachal Frontier Highway (Rs 30,000 crore) and ShillongSilchar Greenfield Highway (Rs 23,000 crore), have been sanctioned to boost regional connectivity. Ring roads in cities like Ayodhya, Kanpur, and Guwahati aim to ease congestion. In 11 years, 1.06 lakh km of highways have been constructed, with the ministrys budget rising ninefold to Rs 2.87 lakh crore. Q) Some projects still face delays in projects caused by land acquisition and environmental clearance issues? Land acquisition falls under state governments, while environmental clearances involve multiple departments, making coordination key. Reducing delays is a test of effective leadership. We prioritise sustainable planning, ensuring timely land acquisition and fast-track approvals for forest, wildlife, and environmental clearances. At least 90% of land and clearance requirements must now be completed before project awards.Regular meetings with state officials and the PM Gati Shakti initiative have streamlined inter-ministerial coordination. Digital portals, Bhoomi Amount Digital Portal for land and Parivesh for environmental approvals simplify processes, accelerating project delivery and enhancing efficiency nationwide. Q) India has seen record construction of highways in recent years but their maintenance still seems to be a challenge. For each fault, we (the Central Government) are held responsible. About 80 percent of complaints on social media are not under our jurisdiction or do not pertain to national highways (NHs). Our roads are of good quality; however, there have been some problems. We are continuously improving the technology and will definitely address these issues. Regarding accountability, we are serious about ensuring that officers and contractors are responsible if roads are not maintained properly. There should be no compromise with quality, and we are committed to fixing lapses wherever they occur to maintain high standards. Q) How long will it take to implement the GPS based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system? It has already started at some locations and will be introduced at 4 to 6 places from November 15. We will move further gradually, expanding the initiative step by step while monitoring progress and ensuring smooth implementation at each stage. Q) With Bihar heading into elections, how does the state compare to others in development across key sectors like water, power, transport, and roads? Bihar needs accelerated development compared to other states. Water, power, transport and roads are the basic requirements for progress. The developmental work undertaken by our government, in the last 10-11 years, has transformed the face of Bihar. Business and industries are growing steadily in Bihar. The young people of Bihar see their future in development and employment. They do not bother about Jaat (Caste), Pant (Community), Dharma (Religion) and Bhasha (Language). They aspire to excel in education, seek better job opportunities, and want to actively contribute to the nations growth. I think that the state has sufficient electricity supply. Irrigation has significantly improved. The road infrastructure has also got better. Earlier, the Ganga had just two bridges, now we have 13. In the highway sector; projects worth Rs five lakh crores are going on. Projects having a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh crores either have been completed or on the verge of completion. Some will start soon. We are building big highways; Varanasi-Kolkata highways cost of Rs 40,000 crores and Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway is worth Rs 50,000 crores. All these highways will change the landscape of Bihar. With a strong and vast network of highways and robust power sector, the industry will reach the state naturally and will ensure Bihar's comprehensive development. Q) Staying on with politics, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi recently held a press conference in which he alleged Vote Chori In Haryana elections. He along with other opposition parties has been questioning Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which started in Bihar. How do you see this issue? Rahul Gandhi speaks for himself. Even his party people don't take him seriously. There is no need to respond to his baseless comments.

Modi wraps up Bihar campaign, hails high turnout as '65-volt jhatka' to opposition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday concluded his extensive campaign for the Bihar assembly elections, asserting that the people have delivered a 65-volt jhatka to the opposition INDIA bloc in the first phase and that its leaders are now spending sleepless nights. Addressing his final rally in Bettiah, West Champaran, Modi seemed confident of an NDA victory, citing the high voter turnout of 65.09 per cent across 121 assembly segments on November 6 in favour of the ruling coalition. He urged voters to break the record of the first phase on November 11 and ensure that the NDA not only wins all seats but establishes a lead in every booth. Modi, who held 14 rallies across the state and a roadshow in Patna in less than a month, reflected on his campaign journey. I had started my campaign by visiting the birthplace of Bharat Ratna Karpoori Thakur, and today I am bringing it to a close at the land where Bapu Gandhi transformed into the Mahatma, he said. He promised to return for the swearing-in ceremony of a new NDA government. My campaign ends today but canvassing will continue tomorrow. But voters job begins on the day of polling. I will come again for the swearing in of an NDA government, the Prime Minister added. Modi, accompanied by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar only at his inaugural rally in Samastipur, showered encomiums on the JD(U) supremo for having ended jungle raj in the state. He used the metaphor of katta, a country-made pistol, to describe what he alleged would be the oppositions high-handedness if they came to power. 'RJD making children say they wish to become street bullies,' alleges PM Modi at Bihar rally Charging the main opposition parties, Modi said they had pointed a country-made, unlicensed pistol at the head of the Congress when it refused to back Tejashwi Yadav as the Chief Ministerial candidate. Without naming leaders, he also referred to royal families running the opposition, calling one party most corrupt in the country and the other most corrupt in Bihar. He voiced alarm over the oppositions poll campaign, during which children reportedly came on stage declaring they wished to become rangdaar (street bullies), armed with unlicensed pistols and double-barrel guns. People are not voting for jungle raj wallahs because they know if these people come to power they will hold a katta at the head of the public with the order to hold hands up. People of Bihar do not want hands up but start-ups, which only the NDA can facilitate, he said. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was lampooned as a Congress ke naamdaar practising drowning, a tongue-in-cheek reference to his recent plunge into a muddy pond to interact with fishermen. Gandhis allegations of vote theft were dismissed as net practice for finding an excuse following defeat in Bihar, while his criticism of Modis aborted plan to take a dip in the Yamuna during Chhath was called an insult to one of the states most popular festivals. Bihar Assembly polls: Claims & counter-claims over turnout in first phase Modi also deftly used the Hindutva narrative to question the INDIA blocs pro-deprived caste stance. He alleged that reluctance of opposition leaders to visit Ayodhya, which houses not just the Ram temple but also shrines dedicated to Maharshi Valmiki, Mata Shabri, and Nishad Raj, was due to hatred for Dalits and backwards. The opposition coalition was also repeatedly charged with protecting infiltrators, whom the central government aimed to remove under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls completed days before polls were announced. The opposition countered that no infiltrators were detected during the exercise and claimed the term ghuspaithya was a dog whistle targeting Muslims, who constitute nearly 17 per cent of Bihars population, with a sizeable presence in Seemanchal. During his speeches, Modi also referenced the abrogation of Article 370, Operation Sindoor, Triple Talaq, and Waqf laws, charging the opposition with capitulation before religious extremists for not supporting the government. He touched upon the issue of migration, which has been highlighted as a major poll concern by Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor . The Prime Minister promised that the NDA, if returned to power, would ensure sons of Bihar get employed on home soil and make their motherland proud. He expressed delight at the sight of women turning out in large numbers at rallies and polling booths. Our mothers and sisters have been the worst sufferers of jungle raj, Modi said, noting that the high turnout of matri shakti had effectively built a fortress around polling booths to keep jungle raj at bay. Bihar doesnt want return of jungle raj, says Modi

'RJD making children say they wish to become street bullies,' alleges PM Modi at Bihar rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday alleged that the RJD, during its election campaigns in Bihar, have been making children say hey wish to become ' rangdaar ' (street bully) upon growing up. Addressing a poll rally in Sitamarhi district, the prime minister alleged, I shudder to hear that the RJD, in its campaign, is getting children to say that upon growing up they wish to become ' rangdaar ' (street bully). Bihar definitely does not want a government which has ' katta ' (country-made firearm), ' kushasan ' (misgovernance), 'kroorta ' (cruelty) and corruption to offer. PM Modi claimed that people in Bihar would not vote for the RJD led Mahagathbandhan as they believe if the alliance is voted to power, the regime would put a country-made pistol to their heads. Wherever I go, I find the prevailing sentiment is - 'we do not want a ' katta ' sarkar, we want an NDA sarkar again.' This is because the people do not want a regime that would put a ' katta ' on their heads and ask them to hold their hands up. People do not want hands up, but start up, which the NDA will facilitate. The NDA shuns ' katta ' and promotes school bags, computers, cricket bats and hockey sticks, Modi claimed. Modi had earlier alleged that the Congress agreed to declare RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as the opposition alliance's chief ministerial candidate after the latter put a country-made pistol to the former's head. Expressing delight over the historic voter turnout of 65.08 per cent in the first phase of the Bihar polls two days ago, Modi claimed, You have given a big shock to the opposition. They are getting sleepless nights. Modi also referred to the 'Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyami Yojana', launched by him over a month ago, under which Rs 10,000 each has been transferred into accounts of over a crore women. This would never have been possible under the ' jungle raj' wallahs . Because, in the words of the father of the ' naamdaar of Congress, the then Prime Minister, out of every rupee sanctioned by the government, only 15 paise reached the people. said Modi, referring to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and his father late Rajiv Gandhi. You all know the blood-stained hand that was responsible for the loot, he added. Modi also referred to the Punaura Dham project in Sitamarhi, the birthplace of Goddess Sita, as an example of the NDA's regard for heritage. He also reiterated his criticism of Rahul Gandhi, claiming that he insultedhe faith of mothers and sisters by calling Chhath festival a drama. Is it not an insult to our sentiments? Should they not be punished? In a democracy, the best way to punish is through the power of your vote. These people have been contemptuous of Maha Kumbh and the Ram temple at Ayodhya, alleged Modi. Rahul Gandhi has criticised Modi for reportedly building a seperate pool near the polluted Yamuna river in Delhi, to take a dip during the Chhath Puja. Because of their vote bank politics, the RJD-Congress has boycotted not just the Ram temple, but even shrines of Mata Shabri, Maharshi Valmiki and Nishad Raj in Ayodhya. Those who are guided by the politics of vote bank can never do good for the state. Their vote bank politics has led them to even protect infiltrators, Modi claimed. (With inputs from PTI)

'India moving fast on path of development,' says PM Modi as he flags off four new Vande Bharat trains from Banaras

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India is moving fast on the path of development, as he flagged off four new Vande Bharat Express trains from the Banaras railway station in Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency. Emphasising that infrastructure is a major factor in the economic growth of developed countries around the world, the prime minister said, In every nation that has achieved major progress, the driving force behind it has been infrastructure development. Infrastructure is not just about big bridges and highways. Whenever such systems are developed anywhere, it sparks the overall development of that region. With so many Vande Bharat trains running and flights arriving from countries across the world, all these developments are now linked to growth. Today, India is also moving rapidly on this path, he said. PM Modi said high-speed trains like Vande Bharat are laying the foundation for a ew generation of Indian Railways. Trains like Vande Bharat, Namo Bharat and Amrit Bharat are laying the foundation of a new generation of Indian Railways. Vande Bharat is a train of Indians, built by Indians for Indians, of which every Indian is proud, he said. He claimed that foreign travellers are amazed by these trains adding that more than 160 Vande Bharat Express trains are now operational in the country. Modi further said that spiritual tourism has become a major source of income and has ushered in development in Uttar Pradesh. In our country, pilgrimage has for centuries been considered a medium of national consciousness. These journeys are not merely routes for darshan of deities, but a sacred tradition that connects the soul of India, Modi said. Places like Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Haridwar, Chitrakoot and Kurukshetra are the centres of our spiritual beliefs, he said. Today, as these sacred destinations are being connected through the Vande Bharat network, it is also linking India's culture, faith and development. This is an important step towards making symbols of India's heritage a representation of national growth, he said. These journeys also have an economic aspect, which is often not discussed. Over the past 11 years, the development work done in Uttar Pradesh has elevated pilgrimage tourism to a new level, the PM said. Last year, more than 11 crore devotees came to Kashi for Baba Vishwanath's darshan, and since the construction of the Ram Temple, over 6 crore people have visited Ayodhya to seek the blessings of Ram Lalla. These devotees have contributed thousands of crores of rupees to Uttar Pradesh's economy and provided steady income to hotel owners, transport operators, local artists and boatmen, he said. This has created new opportunities for the youth, Modi said. Hundreds of young people in Varanasi are now starting new ventures, from transport to local businesses. Because of all this, the doors of prosperity are opening in Kashi and across Uttar Pradesh, he said. To realise the dream of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) from a 'Viksit Kashi', numerous infrastructure projects are being undertaken here, Modi said. Today, Kashi is experiencing continuous expansion, development and qualitative improvement, with facilities ranging from good hospitals, good roads, gas pipelines, and internet connectivity, he said. Work on the ropeway is progressing rapidly, he said. Our effort is to make visiting Varanasi, staying in Varanasi and enjoying the amenities of Varanasi a special experience for everyone, he added. Modi said the government is also striving to improve health services in Varanasi. He said 10-11 years ago, BHU hospital was the only option for people seeking treatment for serious illnesses. Due to the large number of patients, one could not get treatment even after waiting overnight. For serious illnesses like cancer, people would sell their land and farms, and travel to Mumbai for treatment. Today, our government has worked to alleviate all these concerns of the people of Kashi. Mahamana cancer hospital for cancer, Sankara Netralaya for eye treatment, the state-of-the-art trauma centre at BHU, and the divisional hospital at Shatabdi Chikitsalaya, Pandeypur, have all become a boon for Kashi, Purvanchal, and the surrounding states, he said. Due to Ayushman Bharat and Janaushadhi Kendras in these hospitals, millions of poor people are saving crores of rupees. Kashi has become known as the health capital of this entire region, the prime minister said. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also attended the event. The new Vande Bharat Express trains will operate on Banaras-Khajuraho, Lucknow-Saharanpur, Firozpur-Delhi and Ernakulam-Bengaluru routes. The semi-high-speed trains will significantly reduce travel time between major stations, enhance regional mobility, promote tourism and support economic activity across the country, according to an official statement. The Banaras-Khajuraho Vande Bharat Express will connect prominent cultural and religious destinations, including Varanasi, Prayagraj and Chitrakoot, officials said. (With inputs from PTI)

People trust the track record of Narendra-Nitish: Modi hails record turnout in Bihar polls

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the record voter turnout in the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections showed that people had reposed their faith in the track record of Narendra and Nitish. Addressing a rally in Aurangabad district, Modi predicted a clear victory for the NDA, led in Bihar by Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, and lauded the Election Commission for conducting peaceful polls across 121 constituencies. Never before in Bihars history has the turnout been so high. Much of the credit goes to mothers and sisters who came out in large numbers, raising the turnout to nearly 65%. It is evident that they trust the track record of Narendra-Nitish, the Prime Minister said. Asserting that people voted to ensure the NDAs return to power for good governance, Modi said voters had rejected the false promises of the RJD-led opposition. Even Congress, despite being its ally, doesnt trust RJDs promises, he remarked. Taking a dig at the opposition, Modi warned against the return of jungle raj, recalling the violence and Naxal insurgency that marked past elections. The jungle raj wallahs have taught even children to speak of katta and dunaali. They stand for everything that blocks investment and jobs, he said. He also praised the Election Commission for conducting orderly polls despite attempts by jungle raj elements to create trouble. Modi credited Nitish Kumar with ending jungle raj but noted that he faced non-cooperation from the Congress-led UPA during his first nine years as Chief Minister. Reiterating his commitment to promises made, the PM cited the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the abrogation of Article 370, and Operation Sindoor as examples. I do what I promise. You saw what happened to the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack in Operation Sindoor, he said. Speaking in a region known for its large number of soldiers, Modi highlighted the one rank one pension scheme, saying Rs 1 lakh crore had been transferred to ex-servicemen. The RJD people might not even know how many zeros are in one lakh crore, he quipped. Referring to the land-for-jobs scam involving RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his family, Modi said, They promised jobs but made people give up their land. Now they are out on bail. Accusing the opposition of politics of insults, Modi said, They mocked Chhathi Maiya by calling it a drama and spoke ill of Maha Kumbh. On November 11, when the second phase of polls is held, you must punish them. He was referring to Lalu Prasads past remarks on the Maha Kumbh and Congress leader Rahul Gandhis criticism of Modis symbolic Chhath offering.

Amit Shah targets RJD and Congress at Bihar rallies, predicts massive majority for NDA

BETTIAH/MADHUBANI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday addressed election rallies in Bettiah, Motihari and Madhubani as 18 districts went to the polls in the first phase of the Bihar assembly elections, accusing the Opposition, RJD, of having pushed Bihar into a mess about 20 years ago. At Bettiah, Shah made a confident prediction: The counting will begin at 8:00 am on November 14 and by 11:00 am, Lalu and Rahuls party will be finished. Under the leadership of Modi ji and Nitish ji, the NDA will once again form the government in Bihar with a massive majority. Cautioning voters, Shah said, If by some mistake our government does not form and the thugbandhan (referring to the Mahagathbandhan) comes to power, then our Champaran will once again become a mini-Chambal. Do you want to bring back jungle raj? Do you want murder, kidnappings, dacoities and extortion to start again? If you do not want that, then on November 3, press the button on the lotus symbol. Shah also said that if an NDA government was formed, it would make Bihar completely free from floods within five years. Referring to the Ram temple, Shah alleged that Lalu Prasad Yadav and the Congress wanted to stop its construction. Mother Sita was born right here in our Bihar. In Bihar, both of Rams sons, Luv and Kush, were born. The first meeting of Ram and Sita took place in Bihar. It was Ram who rescued Ahalya in Bihar. Dont worry two months ago, Nitish Kumar ji and I went to Sitamarhi for the bhumi pujan. Within two years, a grand temple to Sita Mata will be built at a cost of Rs 850 crore, he said, giving the campaign an emotional touch. Shah added that along with the temple, the doubling of the railway line from Sitamarhi to Ayodhya would be completed. On the day the temples pratishtha happens, we will start a Vande Bharat train running from Ayodhya to Sitamarhi, he said. Taking up the issue of infiltration, Shah asked, Should Bangladeshi infiltrators be removed from Bihars voter lists or not? Just now Rahul Baba led a Ghuspethiya Bachao yatra; he said keep infiltrators on the voter rolls. Should Bangladeshis decide who will be Bihars Chief Minister? Infiltrators take jobs from our youth, demand a share of rations meant for the poor, and make the country insecure. From the land of Ramnagar today I say: do as many yatras and press conferences as you like, Rahul Baba the Bharatiya Janata Party from all over the country and from Bihar will identify and remove every single infiltrator. Declaring that the election was dedicated to ending infiltration, Shah said, The upcoming election is an election to make Bihar free of infiltrators. In West Champaran at Kumarbagh, we have set up a Special Economic Zone. In Chanpatia, we are developing an industrial area and a startup zone. Chanpatias textiles are reaching global markets, and we will make the Kesriya Stupa a world heritage site. He also promised an airport in West Champaran. We have also built a Toy Park in West Champaran. The Tharu community was granted Scheduled Tribe status by our Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji. Modi ji has many schemes in mind for the Tharu community, but because of the election we cannot speak of them now. Once the NDA government forms, we will roll out major schemes for the Tharu community, he said. Recalling how West Champaran was once the sugar bowl of eastern India, Shah said, The chimneys of sugar mills used to billow smoke and farmers used to get paid. The sweetness of our sugar reached across the country. But under jungle raj, extortion caused these mills to shut down one after another locks were put on Champarans sugar mills too. We have restarted the sugar mill at Rega. He assured voters that the BJP and NDA would work to reopen all closed sugar mills in Bihar within the next five years. Shah also listed projects completed in West Champaran, including the PatnaBettiah four-lane road, the widening of National Highway 28 from Bagaha to Bettiah, and the four-lane road No. 139 from Digha to Bettiah. In Motihari, Shah said the Congress now wanted to rule Bihar again by sitting on Lalus shoulders. But I want to tell Rahul ji the one whose shoulders youre riding on is going to lose, and you are going to lose too. Do you want to bring back jungle raj again? Can kidnappings, murders, extortion, and dacoities ever do any good for Bihar? If the RJD candidate from here wins even by mistake, will jungle raj return or not? Only the team of Nitish Kumar and Narendra Modi can stop jungle raj, he said. Lalu jis son raised the slogan, Shahabuddin amar rahe (long live Shahabuddin), and gave a ticket to his son. But I want to tell you, Lalu ji even if three generations of your family come to power, Bihar will never again see the rise of goons like Shahabuddin. In Madhubani, Shah said, A large airport is going to be built in Madhubani. In Benipatti, a medical college will be built. Recently, Rahul Baba said that we should find out how many people from each caste and each religion are in our Army. Rahul Baba, shame on you shame on you! You want to divide our Army on the basis of religion and caste. He criticised Rahul Gandhis comments about caste in the Army. In our Army, no matter which caste a brave soldier belongs to, we respect every single one of them. The PFI had spread all the way to Phulwarisharif. It was an anti-national organisation that wanted to break India into pieces. Modi ji, in just one night, banned PFI from Kerala to Phulwarisharif and put all its members behind bars. And Lalu Yadav says they should be released Lalu ji, let me tell you, they will never be released, he asserted.

Congress-RJD protect infiltrators, dislike Lord Ram for vote bank politics: PM Modi in Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday accused the opposition RJD-Congress alliance in Bihar of appeasing infiltrators while displaying dislike for Lord Ram and Chhathi Maiya due to their vote bank politics. Addressing rallies in Bhagalpur and Araria, Modi alleged that the reluctance of opposition leaders to visit Ayodhya for the darshan of shrines dedicated to Nishad Raj, Mata Shabri and Maharshi Valmiki reflected their hatred for Dalits and backward classes. The naamdaar (Rahul Gandhi) of Congress called devotion to Chhathi Maiya a drama. They never visit Ayodhya to have a darshan of Lord Ram. I can understand their dislike for Lord Ram, but at least they could pay respects at the shrines of Nishad Raj, Mata Shabri and Maharshi Valmiki. Their reluctance shows their contempt for Dalits and backward classes, Modi said. The Prime Minister charged that the oppositions politics of appeasement has led them to protect infiltrators. The NDA is committed to driving out every infiltrator from the country. But the Congress-RJD protect them, take out yatras in their favour and spin misleading narratives, he alleged, in an apparent reference to Rahul Gandhis Voter Adhikar Yatra. Modi said that whenever the RJD-Congress come to power, they attempt to give backdoor entry to infiltrators. They do it for vote bank politics, but it ultimately harms the people. Infiltrators claim a share in what rightfully belongs to citizens, he said. Taking aim at the oppositions record in Bihar, Modi said, During 15 years of jungle raj, Bihar saw zero development, no highways, no bridges, no centres of higher learning. Under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the NDA has worked hard to bring the state out of that era. Listing recent achievements, he said the state now has expressways, bridges over major rivers, four central universities and other institutions of higher education. Only the NDA can ensure this journey of growth continues uninterrupted, he asserted. Referring to the ongoing polling in 121 of the 243 Assembly segments in the first phase of elections, Modi said he was encouraged by the turnout. Our mothers, sisters and daughters have created a veritable fortress at polling booths to thwart the return of jungle raj, he said. He urged voters to remember the power of one vote, saying it had first brought social justice to Bihar and later ousted the 15-year jungle raj, which he said was marked by katta (country-made guns), kroorta (cruelty), katuta (bitterness), kushasan (misgovernance) and corruption. In the RJDs curriculum, a stands for apharan (kidnapping), f for firauti (ransom) and p for parivarvaad (dynasty rule), he said, adding that Congresss dictionary doesnt have words like swadeshi and atmanirbharta. Accusing the two parties of fomenting social strife, Modi said the RJD was responsible for caste violence and the Congress for communal riots like the infamous Bhagalpur riots of 1989, which was as much of a blot as the anti-Sikh violence of 1984. He also alleged that both parties were controlled by the most corrupt families in Bihar and the country and claimed infighting had already begun between them. In apparent reference to Gandhi he said People say the Congress naamdaar didnt even want to come to Bihar and was forcibly brought here. Now he is damaging the RJD. After elections, all these INDI Alliance partners will be seen breaking each others heads, Modi said. He further alleged that the RJD had put a katta to the Congresss head to name Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate, and that the Congress, humiliated after its leader was dropped from RJD posters, was out to avenge the insult. Referring to Vikassheel Insan Party founder Mukesh Sahani, Modi said even the alliances deputy CM candidate was now speaking out against jungle raj. The jungle raj wallahs once lorded over you as if they were masters. Modi believes the people are his mai-baap, his family, he concluded.

Should form 'Apmaan Mantralaya': Priyanka takes dig at PM Modi's repeated 'insult' accusations

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for repeatedly accusing opposition leaders of insulting Bihar, and urged him to form an Apmaan Mantralaya (Ministry of Insults). Addressing a poll rally at Sonabarsa in Saharsa district, Priyanka said that PM Modi keeps raising unnecessary issues instead of speaking about corruption or misrule of the NDA government in Bihar. Instead of talking about development, the prime minister keeps accusing every opposition leader of insulting the nation and Bihar. He should form a new ministry -- Apamaan Mantralaya -- because that's what his government seems most focused on, she said. PM Modi has been targeting leaders of the Congress and the RJD, accusing them of insulting Chhathi Maiyya, having problems with the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and protecting infiltrators. Priyanka also urged the prime minister to speak about what the NDA government has done for Bihar. Before announcing doles for Bihar during elections, Modi and Amit Shah should first answer what the NDA did for the state in the last 20 years, she said. The Congress general secretary repeated her allegation that the Bihar government is being emote-controlled from Delhi. Nitish Kumar doesn't run the Bihar government. It is the prime minister and people at the Centre who are running the show, she said. The NDA government in Bihar is threatening people's right to vote guaranteed by the Constitution, she alleged. Slamming the ruling alliance over joblessness, she said, The youth of Bihar are forced to leave the state because there are no jobs here. All major PSUs that used to generate employment have been handed over to big corporates that are friends of the BJP. (With inputs from PTI)

RJD turned Bihar into hub of kidnapping, extortion: Amit Shah at Bihar rally

PATNA: Sharpening his attack on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Lalu Prasad, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that only one industry flourished in Bihar during the RJDs rule that of kidnapping, extortion, contract killings, and dacoity. All industrial units were shut down in the state under RJD rule, he added. Shah hinted that elections in Bihar could be held in a single phase if the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returns to power after the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for next month. Addressing a rally in Biharsharif in Nalanda district, Shah said that the NDAs record of good governance had already ensured a reduction in polling phases in Bihar. Next time, elections will be held in just one round if we return to power, he told the gathering. Heaping praise on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Shah said that under his leadership, the NDA had freed the state from jungle raj (lawlessness) and the scourge of Naxalism. Our government at the Centre is determined to free the entire country from the Naxal menace, Shah asserted. Bihar assembly polls: Dont allow 'jungle raj of Congress and RJD to re-enter the state, says Amit Shah Later, addressing another rally in Munger, Shah compared the NDA alliance to the Pandavas, saying the partners would fight the election with unity and shared purpose. NDA partners will fight the election united like the Pandavas five political parties coming together as one. On the other side, the opposition has neither leadership nor direction, he said. This election is not about making someone an MLA, minister, or chief minister; it is about ensuring that jungle raj does not return to Bihar, Shah added. He also highlighted the BJP governments religious and cultural initiatives, noting that while the Ram temple has already been constructed in Ayodhya, work has begun on a grand Sita temple at Punauradham in Sitamarhi district. The Sita temple will be built at a cost of Rs 800 crore, Shah said.

Bihar assembly polls: Dont allow 'jungle raj of Congress and RJD to re-enter the state, says Amit Shah

PATNA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today addressed two massive public rallies in Siwan and Buxar, Bihar , launching a strong attack on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its leader Lalu Prasad Yadav. He accused the RJD of returning Bihar to the days of jungle raj and urged people to reject the politics of crime and corruption. Speaking in Siwan, Shah said this was his first visit to the district after nomination and that he had come to pay his respects to the people of Siwan. He recalled the period of what he called twenty years of jungle raj under Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, saying that during that time the people of Siwan had suffered terror and violence at the hands of former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin. The land ran with blood, but the people never bowed. They ended the rule of LaluRabri, he said. Shah strongly criticized the RJD for giving a ticket to Shahabuddins son Osama from Raghunathpur, calling it an attempt to revive the atmosphere of fear in the region. He declared that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, no one would be allowed to get away with crime. Even if a hundred Shahabuddins come, they will not escape the law. Do not let jungle raj return, do not let Osama win, and do not let the ideology of Shahabuddin prevail, he said. The Union Minister told the crowd that the true Diwali would come on November 14, when, according to him, Lalus sons fate will be sealed. Praising Nitish Kumar, Shah said that Bihar had been freed from jungle raj under Nitishs leadership and had progressed further under the double-engine government of Modi at the Centre and Nitish in the state. For the last eleven years, Modi ji and Nitish ji have worked together to take Bihar forward. Shahabuddin left Siwan bloodstained, but Modi ji has put Bihar on the path of development, he said. Listing the achievements of the Modi government, Shah said that in the last eleven years, crores of poor people across India have received free food grains, health insurance of Rs 5 lakh under Ayushman Bharat, tap water connections, and direct financial support to farmers. He said 12 crore toilets, 10 crore gas cylinders, and 4 crore houses have been provided under various central schemes, while the government has also taken measures like reducing GST on 395 items to benefit the common people. Shah highlighted major infrastructure projects sanctioned for Siwan, including a four-lane road from Siwan to Masrath at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore, widening of the ChhapraSiwanGopalganj road, construction of a new bypass, and rebuilding of Siwan railway station at Rs 92 crore. He also mentioned the establishment of a medical college at Merwa for Rs 568 crore, an engineering college, a pharmacy college, and a power grid worth Rs 180 crore. Lalu ji, what development did you bring in twenty years? he asked. You ran scams fodder scam, land-for-job scam, railway hotel scam, corruption in flood relief, and many others. Should Bihar again choose those who brought jungle raj and corruption? Shah also accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of supporting infiltrators , claiming that illegal immigrants were taking away the jobs and rations meant for local people. He said the BJP and NDA would ensure that infiltrators are identified and removed if voted back to power. 'Bihar will vote for development, not dynasty politics' Later in the day, addressing a rally in Buxar, Shah invoked Chhathi Maiya and prayed that jungle raj never returns to Bihar. Referring again to RJDs decision to field Osama, he said, By giving Shahabuddins son a ticket, Lalu ji wants to frighten the people. But this is the land of Veer Kunwar Singh the people here fear no one. He compared the RJDs candidate with the NDAs choice, Anand Mishra, a former Indian Police Service officer who, he said, had left a prestigious career to serve Bihar. While Lalu gives tickets to criminals sons, we are giving tickets to capable sons of the soil, he said, claiming that the NDA stood for good governance while the opposition was leading Bihar back to lawlessness. Shah also spoke about the cultural and religious development of the region, noting that Buxar has been included in the Ramayana Circuit. He said that projects worth Rs 850 crore were underway to develop places associated with Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, including the Sitamarhi temple and Sita Matas final abode. He accused the Congress and RJD of opposing the Ram Temple in Ayodhya for vote-bank politics, adding that the people of Bihar will give them a fitting reply. Continuing his attack on Lalu Prasad Yadav, Shah said, Lalu ji has made five attempts to launch his son like a rocket, but unlike Sriharikota, all have failed. He said the NDA under the leadership of Modi and Nitish represented development and good governance, while the opposition parties were focused only on promoting their own families. The future of Bihars youth lies with the BJP, JD(U), Paswan ji, Manjhi ji, and Kushwaha ji, he said. Concluding his speeches, Amit Shah expressed confidence that the people of Bihar would once again choose the NDA in the upcoming elections. On November 14, the people of Bihar will vote for good governance and ensure that jungle raj never returns to this sacred land, he said.

Court junks frivolous Ayodhya verdict plea

The Times of India 24 Oct 2025 3:26 am

Delhi court upholds civil judge order dismissing plea seeking declaration of Ayodhya verdict as void

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has dismissed a plea challenging a civil judge's order that had rejected a suit seeking that the Supreme Court's judgment in the Ayodhya case be declared ull and void. The district court was hearing the revision plea filed by Advocate Mehmood Pracha against the April 2025 order of a civil court, which had dismissed his suit with costs of Rs 1 lakh. Underlining that seeking guidance from the Almighty cannot be berated as a fraudulent act to gain an unfair advantage, either in law or in any religion, District Judge Dharmender Rana imposed an additional Rs 5 lakh fine o effectively check the menace of frivolous and luxurious litigation. Noting the facts of the case, the court said Pracha had claimed that during a public address in Pune, former Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, had admitted that the October 2019 judgment in the Ayodhya case was in terms of the solution provided to him by Bhagwan Shri Ram Lala Virajman. Accordingly, it said that Pracha filed a suit seeking a declaration of the verdict as void, besides seeking fresh adjudication. The court noted that against the civil judge's order dismissing his plea, Pracha had filed the present appeal. In an order dated October 18, Judge Rana dismissed the appeal with an additional cost of Rs 5 lakh, saying, Evidently, the cost imposed by the trial court (civil court) has failed to achieve the intended goal of deterrent effect. Therefore, I am of the considered opinion that to effectively check the menace of frivolous and luxurious litigation, the cost amount needs to be suitably enhanced to fetch the desired results. He said Pracha had challenged the Ayodhya case verdict on absolutely frivolous grounds, without bothering to go through the verdict. The insistence of the appellant (Pracha) to implead the CJI, soon after his retirement, speaks volumes against his oblique intent, the judge said. He said that 'Aham Brahama Asmi' was a core tenet of Hindu philosophy, embodying the idea that the individual self is not separate from the universal, infinite consciousness, and even the holy Quran permitted the devotees to seek guidance for the right path from the almighty Allah. Therefore, seeking guidance from the Almighty cannot be berated as a fraudulent act to gain an unfair advantage, either in law or in any religion, the judge said. Evidently, the distinction between a juristic personality litigating before the court and the omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient supreme being is absolutely clear from the Ayodhya case judgment itself. Resultantly, one cannot resist the inference that the imputations of the appellant are a result of his sheer indolence and incorrect understanding of the subject,he added. He said there was no scope for arguing that the plaint disclosed any cause of action. A five-judge Constitution bench unanimously granted the entire 2.77 acres of the disputed Ram-Janmbhoomi Babri Masjid land in Ayodhya to the deity Ram Lalla on November 9, 2019. The judge further agreed with the civil court's observation that Pracha was not a party in the Ayodhya case, and so he could not claim himself to be an affected party, that his suit was barred by law, and was in fact an abuse of the process of law. He said, The already overburdened dockets of the court cannot afford the menace of luxurious and frivolous litigation, and the issue becomes all the more concerning when a responsible officer of the court opts to file a frivolous litigation. The menace of luxurious and frivolous needs to be dealt with an iron hand, the judge said. He said that recently a negative trend had emerged in society, where public functionaries were targeted upon demitting offices by some unscrupulous litigants, who nurtured a misconceived notion that upon demitting office, an ex-public functionary became vulnerable and prone to all kinds of malicious and malefic assault. Therefore, courts of this country owe a duty to ensure a peaceful and pleasant evening to the persons who have devoted their lives to the service of the nation. Not only the courts but even the bar owes an important duty to diligently act as a sentinel so that the impurities are sieved out at the entry gates themselves, he added.

India upheld righteousness, avenged injustice with Operation Sindoor: PM Modi in letter to citizens

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday penned a letter to the citizens of the country on Deepavali, highlighting the successes of Operation Sindoor and the fight against Naxalism and asserting that Bharat has emerged as a symbol of stability at a time when the world is beset with crises. The prime minister listed the decision to lower Goods and Services Tax rates among the historic achievements of his government and said that citizens are saving thousands of crores of rupees during the 'GST Bachat Utsav'. He also urged citizens to adopt swadeshi to promote the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat', to respect all languages, prioritise health and embrace yoga. All these efforts will rapidly take us towards a Viksit Bharat, Modi said in his letter, which he wrote a day after he celebrated Diwali with Navy personnel onboard the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. I extend my heartfelt greetings to all of you on the auspicious occasion of Deepavali, a festival filled with energy and enthusiasm. This is the second Deepavali after the grand construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said. Lord Shri Ram teaches us to uphold righteousness and also gives us the courage to fight injustice. We have seen a living example of this a few months ago during Operation Sindoor. During Operation Sindoor, Bharat not only upheld righteousness but also avenged injustice, the PM said. He said that this Deepavali is particularly special because for the first time, lamps will be lit in many districts across the country, including remote areas. PM Modi spends Diwali aboard INS Vikrant; lauds armed forces' coordination in Operation Sindoor These are the districts where Naxalism and Maoist terrorism have been eradicated from the root. In recent times, we have seen many individuals abandoning the path of violence and joining the mainstream of development, expressing faith in the Constitution of our country. This is a major achievement for the nation, Modi said. The prime minister said amid these historic achievements, the country has also embarked on next-generation reforms in recent days. On the first day of Navratri, lower GST rates were implemented. During this 'GST Bachat Utsav', citizens are saving thousands of crores of rupees, Modi said. He said in a world going through multiple crises, Bharat has emerged as a symbol of both stability and sensitivity. We are also on track to become the third-largest economy in the world in the near future, he said. The prime minister also underscored that the primary responsibility of the citizens is to fulfil their duties towards the nation. Modi also urged citizens to adopt swadeshi and proudly say, This is swadeshi. Let us promote the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'. Let us respect all languages. Let us maintain cleanliness. Let us prioritise our health. Let us reduce the use of oil in our food by 10 per cent and embrace yoga. All these efforts will rapidly move us towards a Viksit Bharat, he said. Deepavali also teaches us that when one lamp lights another, its light doesn't diminish but it grows further. With the same spirit, let us light lamps of harmony, cooperation and positivity in our society and surroundings this Deepavali, the PM said. Naxalism to become history soon: Rajnath Singh

Uttarakhand's month-long Diwali keeps ancient mountain traditions alive

DEHRADUN: While the rest of India concludes its Diwali celebrations with Bhai Dooj, Uttarakhands mountain communities continue to celebrate the festival of lights for almost a month, retaining ancient traditions that reflect the regions unique cultural identity. In several high-altitude and remote areas of the state, the main Diwali festival is observed a month later during the month of Mangseer , a practice rooted in age-old beliefs about the delayed arrival of news in inaccessible Himalayan valleys. This extended celebration is locally known as Mangseer Bagwal or Budhi (Old) Diwali . Speaking about the cultural significance of this observance, historian and author Jai Singh Rawat emphasised its deep historical roots. In the high mountain areas of Uttarakhand, such as Champawat, Bageshwar, Tehri, and Jaunsar-Bawar, Diwali is celebrated a month after the main Kartik Amavasya festival, during the month of Mangseer, Rawat told TNIE . The belief is that in ancient times, the news of Lord Ramas victory over Ravana allegedly reached these difficult terrains much later. Consequently, they began celebrating Diwali a month afterward, he explained, linking the delay to the regions historical isolation. The Mangseer Bagwal celebrations are marked by vibrant community rituals, most notably the Bhaila . During this event, villagers spin balls of burning wood in the air. The Bhaila is a vibrant example of social unity and folk culture, Rawat noted. It symbolises courage and joy, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of dhol-damaun drums and folk songs. It transcends boundaries of age and class, bringing everyone together. Adding another layer to Uttarakhands festive calendar is Igas Bagwal , celebrated eleven days after the main Diwali and often marked by a state holiday. This tradition is based on the belief that the good news of Lord Ramas return to Ayodhya allegedly reached the mountain communities eleven days after the event. On Igas, the celebration shifts to the agrarian community. Villagers gather in the fields, swirling flaming torches made of deodar or pine wood, known as Bhelo , while engaging in collective singing and dancing. The form of Diwali has changed over time, Rawat conceded. But the traditions remain alive. While urban areas see an increase in electric lights and crackers, villages still maintain the tradition of earthen lamps (deepaks), folk songs, and communal worship. A crucial element of Igas is the veneration of livestock. Farmers honour their cattle, offering bhog composed of flattened rice ( chura ), milk, and ghee. Traditional delicacies such as arsa , puri , and pakoras are prepared in homes. The Diwali traditions of Uttarakhand are not merely about lighting lamps; they symbolise collective joy, folk music, and the deep connection to agricultural life and animal husbandry. Government and social organisations are now promoting the Igas festival as a cultural heritage, Rawat added, acknowledging modern efforts to preserve these unique customs. This cultural phenomenonwhere Diwali is observed on three distinct dates across various parts of the statehas become a defining characteristic of Devbhoomi.
