Opposition MPs slam Centres silence on looming US tariffs, demand clear stance

Opposition lawmakers on Thursday questioned the government's response to US President Donald Trump's tariff threats, with senior Congress leader P Chidambaram urging clarity. He said the issue had neither been discussed in Parliament nor consulted with opposition parties. Initiating a discussion on the Finance Bill 2025 in the Rajya Sabha, Chidambaram cautioned that a trade war would lead to depressed exports, lower FDI, higher inflation and currency depreciation. He said India must stand with saner voices in the world, such as Canada, Britain, France, Germany and Japan, and collectively do everything to prevent a tariff and trade war. Referring to Trump's statement that the US will impose tariffs from April 2 , the former finance minister said, What is the government's response? What is India's response? There has been no statement of policy, no discussion in Parliament, and no consultation with Opposition parties. The government is holding its cards close to its chest if it has any cards at all. Chidambaram further said, A tariff war will lead to a trade war. The whole world will be hurt... He alleged that Sitharaman had announced customs duty reduction on various items, including motor vehicles, passenger cars, goods, transport vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and even toys in the Union Budget 2025-26 under Trump's pressure. On fiscal policy, I would like to highlight that when this government assumed office in May 2014, the fiscal deficit at the end of the previous year was 4.5%, according to their official numbers. In the middle of this government's tenure, the FD improved to 3.4% in 2018-19. But pic.twitter.com/x2oVXPUwWT Congress (@INCIndia) March 27, 2025 Ahead of reciprocal tariffs, US team in India from Tuesday to zero in on framework for bilateral trade deal Congress leader Rajeev Shukla expressed alarm over the impending trade tensions, warning of a substantial tariff burden after April 1. He criticised the government for reducing state funding and advocated for increased expenditure on health and infrastructure. Expressing concerns over the tariff issue, Sagarika Ghose (TMC) said, ... A Tsunami is coming on April 2. A new round of reciprocal tariffs is about to be announced by the Donald Trump administration and could prove devastating for India's export earnings. Citing a report, she said 87 percent of total exports worth as much as USD 66 billion could be hit. Industries employing lakhs of Indians will suddenly lose market share in the US. Ghose also said that the alleged recovery of piles of cash from the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma on March 14 is an example of the failed policy of demonetisation and asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ready to face punishment to be decided by people for its failure. The TMC leader said that at the time of demonetisation, the Prime Minister had said if his policy was wrong, people could give him any punishment they wished. Is the prime minister ready to face the punishment of the people?... because these piles of cash are a stark example that the policy of demonetisation has resoundingly failed. This government is a failed government, she said. Trumps tariff plan will ruin India: Congress slams Modi government's 'disastrous' trade policy AAP MP Raghav Chadha highlighted the growing burden of taxes on the common man and said that from birth to death, one has to pay tax at every step without getting any good quality service in return. Tax to live, tax to die and tax on every breath! Chadha said, adding that the burden of tax begins even before a child opens their eyes as sweets to celebrate the birth attract 28 per cent tax. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP AD Singh also demanded the rationalisation of GST slabs. Singh said the concession given in the income tax by the Union government in the Budget is helping a very small section of the population. The RJD leader questioned how government policies are being formulated without the Census being conducted. Policies in the country are influenced by the 'Bombay club', he said. He added that the situation was the same under the previous Congress-led UPA government. Meanwhile, CPI(M) MP John Brittas said, I don't know if it is the Bombay club, Nagpur club, or Gujarat club, but this is heavily loaded against Kerala and South India. He said that South India has become a colony of North India. YSRCP leader Ayodhya Rami Reddy Alla, while praising the government as disciplined and hardworking, urged the need for a comprehensive sector-wise development vision over the next 25 years. He stressed the importance of aligning planning and expenditure within a 3 percent deviation. Abdul Wahab (IUML) demanded an increase in the MPLAD funds and a check on NBFC banks mushrooming in Kerala. He also expressed concerns over the closing down of 50 per cent of startups in the country and the 18 per cent GST imposed even on used old cars. Responding to the Opposition remarks, Kunwar Ratanjeet Pratap Narayan Singh (BJP) said, Until the tariff is not implemented, what speech or what mention can anyone make on it. We will be able to talk about it only after it is implemented after April 2. Earlier it was said that India should maintain relations with America, but now when Prime Minister Modi is talking about the benefits that India can get for trade by improving relations with the US, the Opposition has an issue, he pointed out. Nationalist Congress Party MP Prafful Patel said the tariff imposition would not impact India as we are a et exporter to the US. Congress' Renuka Chowdhury, Dharmshila Gupa (BJP) and Vikramjit Singh Sahney of the AAP also participated in the debate. PM Modi to inaugurate Hisar airport, new power unit in Haryana

CHANDIGARH: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Haryana on April 14 to inaugurate air services from Maharaja Agrasen International Airport in Hisar and lay the foundation stone for an 800 MW unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant in Yamunanagar. These projects aim to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen the states power infrastructure. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Haryana on April 14 and will gift two major projects to the people of the state. These include the foundation stone laying of a new 800 MW unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant in Yamunanagar, built at a cost of Rs 7,272.06 crore, and the inauguration of air services from Maharaja Agrasen Airport in Hisar. Saini stated that an Integrated Aviation Hub is being developed over 7,200 acres in Hisar, with 4,200 acres allocated for the airport and 3,000 acres for an Integrated Manufacturing Cluster. The airports development is divided into three phases, with the first phase already completed at a cost of Rs 50 crore, including a terminal building. In the second phase, a 3,000-metre-long runway has been constructed, enabling Airbus aircraft with up to 180 passengers to operate. On June 13, 2024, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with Alliance Air to start air services to five cities: Ayodhya, Jammu, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh, Saini said. He further added that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) applied for a licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on January 23 this year, and on March 13, the DGCA issued the licence to the AAI. The chief minister also reaffirmed in his budget speech on March 17 that flights from Hisar to Ayodhya, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Jammu would soon begin. Regarding the power project, Saini said, The Union Ministry of Power has granted approval to Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) for setting up this third unit at the Yamunanagar-based thermal power plant. This project is an expansion of the existing 2300 MW units at the facility. The project has a completion deadline of 52 months, with commercial operations expected to commence within 48 months. He added that with the addition of the 800 MW unit, Haryanas domestic power generation capacity will increase to 3,382 MW. Currently, the state has an installed power capacity of approximately 14,000 MW, of which 2,582 MW is generated by HPGCL. The project has already received clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with approval from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board. Saini further announced that a state-level event will be held to mark the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Dr B.R. Ambedkar. The Prime Ministers presence as the chief guest of the programme will serve as an inspiration for the younger generation and boost morale across the state, he said. Dr B.R. Ambedkar dedicated his life to uplifting the underprivileged and backward communities, providing society with a unifying path through the Indian Constitution. To ensure that his life and contributions continue to inspire future generations, this event is being organised, he added.

Ram Temple Trust to meet in Ayodhya on March 16

LUCKNOW: The trustees of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust will meet in Ayodhya on March 16, as the construction work of the Ram temple is being expedited to meet the April 15 deadline. The meeting will be held at the Maniram Chhavani temple, and temple trust chief Mahant Nritya Gopal Das will preside over it. Temple Trust general secretary Champat Rai, treasurer Govind Dev Giri, members Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati, Swami Vishwaprasann Tirtha and Dr Anil Mishra, temple construction committee chairman Nripendra Mishra, central and state government representatives, and district officials are expected to attend the meeting. The last meeting of the temple trust took place in November last year, during which discussions were held over the donations received and the expenses incurred on the Ram temples construction. However, the sources claimed that deliberations that will take place on March 16 will review the status of the upcoming temples second and third floors, the construction of other shrines on the premises, public facilities, as well as the donations and the expenditures. In the meeting, deliberation will also be held over key decisions regarding the Ram Navami celebrations. Significantly, the first floor of the temple was completed last year, and it was marked by the consecration of the child form of Lord Ram in sanctum sanctorum on January 22, 2024. Meanwhile, amid delays, the Ram Mandir Construction Committee had expedited the construction works on the temples planned on Ram Janmabhoomi premises and complete them before the end of its tenure. As per the committees chairman, Nripendra Misra, there is a delay of three months in the construction work of the Ram Mandir. The temples parkota will be completed by September, Misra had told media persons during his visit to the temple town last week. He had attributed the delay in construction to Holi as many workers visited their home towns.About 20,000 cubic feet of stone is yet to be laid in the temple. He had added that the construction work of the temple (main temple complex) was likely to be completed by April. Apprising about the challenges, Misra had said that approximately 20 acres of land would be beautified to remain in tune with nature. Over 1.25 crore devotees visited the Ram temple during 45 days of Mahakumbh. The count was tracked using AI and door metal detectors. Devotees also contributed donations of around Rs 15 lakh daily. The influx of devotees began on Makar Sankranti and continued unabated till Maha Shivratri. From January 26 onwards, on average of around 10 to 12 lakh devotees thronged the temple town. However, the tenure of the Ram Mandir Construction Committee, which was constituted on the directives of the Supreme Court, will end by December this year. The construction of sapth mandir on Ram Janmabhoomi premises will be completed in April and the idols will be installed with Vedic rituals in all temples. The date for the consecration ceremony will be finalised by the Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Tirath Kshetra Trust, said Misra. While the Ram Mandir Construction Committee makes all decisions related to the construction work, the temple trust makes decisions regarding the management of the temple. Notably, the Ram Mandir is constructed over a 2.77-acre plot. The Ram Janmabhoomi premises is spread across a cavernous 70-acre area, comprising, at least seven other temples, a 732-meter-long circumambulation path known as a parkota, greenery and a bevy of smaller shrines. The temples of Hindu saints, including Valmiki, Vashishtha, Vishwamitra, Agastya, along with Nishadraj and Ahilya, are coming up in the complex. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir has been constructed in the traditional Nagara style. Its length (east-west) is 380 feet; width is 250 feet and height is 161 feet; and is supported by a total of 392 pillars and 44 doors.

189 mosques in UP covered with tarpaulin on Holi eve as police tighten security

LUCKNOW: With Holi falling on Friday during the holy month of Ramzan and prominent Muslim clerics of Uttar Pradesh having already revised the timings for Friday prayers, postponing them after 2 pm, 189 mosques in at least four districts of the state were covered with tarpaulin ahead of the festival of colours. While Muslim clerics have adjusted the timing of Friday prayers across 18 districts of the state on Holi day, mosques in Bareilly, Sambhal, Shahjahanpur, and Aligarh in central-western UP were covered with tarpaulin to protect them from the splash of Holi colors. For the sake of maintaining peace, UP DGP Prashant Kumar sent a letter to all the district police chiefs, commissionerates, and heads of police zones and ranges with a 20-point directive to fortify the sensitive zones in their respective districts with adequate deployment of police and paramilitary forces. Besides holding direct interactions with top police officers of the state, the DGP personally met senior officers of sensitive districts and discussed police arrangement for the festival. In the hyper-sensitive Sambhal district, where Shahi Jama Masjid has been caught in a litigation for the past few months over the court-ordered survey, several mosques along with the Jama Masjid were already covered with tarpaulin sheets on Wednesday. As per the senior police officer of the district, additional paramilitary force for round-the-clock monitoring and vigilance were deployed in the town. In Sambhal, the Friday Namaz would be held at 2.30 pm due to Holi celebrations. Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid management committee chief Zafar Ali urged members of both communities to celebrate Holi and offer Friday prayers in a harmonious atmosphere. Regarding the administrations move to cover mosques with tarpaulin, Ali welcomed the decision, stating that it was a positive step. Maximum mosques 109-- were covered with tarpaulin in Bareilly where a Ram Barat was taken out on Holi eve with strict vigilance and deployment of over 5000 police personnel on all the mosques falling in the route of the Barat. In Shahjahanpur, 67 mosques were covered before the traditional Laat Sahab Juloos on Holi. Shahjahanpur is the only district where there is a tradition of playing Joota Maar Holi (playing Holi using shoes/slippers). A person is made to sit on a buffalo cart as laat sahab and is made to take the rounds of the city with people throwing colours, shoes and slippers at him. A senior officer, who is a part of the team monitoring security arrangements at DGP headquarters, said senior officers would escort the traditional procession of Laat Sahab. Around 1000 additional cops were called in from other districts for deployment at sensitive spots. The police contingent carried out a flag march on Holi eve in the district. Similarly, 10 mosques in Sambhal and three in Aligarh were also covered. The drone-equipped vigilance is on across the sensitive districts of the state. Barricades have been erected along the routes of Holi processions with the installation of several CCTV cameras by the respective local administration. As per Shahajhanpur SP Rajesh S, in all 18 Holi processions including the two major Laat Saheb processions, are taken put in the city. Rajya Sabha discusses Ministry of Railways operations as opposition slams centre for privatising sector

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha on Wednesday discussed the working of the Ministry of Railways after the opposition slammed the government for privatising Indian Railways operations and compromising the safety of passengers. As the House was adjourned early on Wednesday owing to Holi festivities, Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, who was in the chair, declared that inconclusive discussion would continue with the Ministers reply on Monday. Earlier, taking part in the discussion, DMKs NR Elango alleged that 2 million jobs in the Railways have been cut due to contract and outsourcing systems adopted for engaging the workforce. The DMK MP said, after the BJP government came to power in 2015, a NITI Aayog committee proposed a two-decade vision to privatise major segments of Indias extensive railway network. But since then the government has implemented various privatisation measures through multiple approaches, he added. In the past three or four years we have lost valuable lives of 400 passengers due to train accidents, compared to zero deaths between 2018 and 2021. Why is this happening? This is happening because of privatisation of employees, he said, while alleging that the government has been giving the line maintenance, the infrastructure maintenance, everything to contractors. In his submission during the discussion, RJDs Sanjay Yadav, while citing the high number of deaths in various accidents related to the Railways in the recent past, said, the safety system Kavach has not been fully implemented. He also wondered how many lives to be lost before the system is put in place. Pointing out several issues, such as the governments indifferent attitude in dealing with derailments, cleanliness of toilets in trains and stations, inability to handle crowds, the RJD MP said rail journeys (Safar) have become synonymous to suffer. Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda of JD(S) said the Railway has done a great job in the last ten years, which can be compared with the work done in the previous 60 years due to the clear vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ambition to make India a developed nation. Ayodhya Rami Reddy Alla (YSRCP) appreciated the government for taking various steps to modernise Railways. But he said the current speed and the vision is not sufficient and has to be accelerated. Subhasish Khuntia (BJD) accused the Centre of neglecting Odisha stating the state is getting very less considering its overall contribution to the Railways overall revenue. Sanjay Singh of AAP demanded a policy to accommodate 19,000 porters across the country in the Railway system.

Sambhal predates Islam, Vishnu temple destroyed in 1526: Yogi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that forcibly seizing someone's faith and trampling over their beliefs is unacceptable, especially when we know the truth about Sambhal which predates Islam, with the Vishnu temple there being destroyed in 1526. He said that Sambhal has been mentioned in scriptures that are 5,000 years old, which contain references to Lord Vishnu's future incarnation. He also mentioned that a temple of Lord Vishnu in Sambhal was demolished in 1526, and two years later, in 1528, the Ram temple in Ayodhya was destroyed, both acts carried out by the same person.

Patna Diary | Tejashwi loses cool over question on Nitish

RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav generally has a very calm response to media queries. But when it comes to his chacha, the situation is not always the same. Tejashwi virtually lost cool when a journalist asked whether he would welcome Nitish Kumar in grand alliance fold. Tejashwi said, Who gives you such ideas? Why will we welcome him? There is no offer, dont talk nonsense. Tejashwis remark assumed significance in the wake of former CM Rabri Devis statement that RJD would consider joining hands with Nitish if the latter snapped ties with BJP first and show his willingness to do so before polls. Ayodhya priest booked for fraudulent land deal with Ram temple trust

LUCKNOW: Another case of a fraudulent land deal has cropped up in temple town as Ayodhya police registered an FIR against a temple priest Ramakant Pathak for allegedly selling Naya Anand Bhavan Temple property to Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Keshtra Trust through fake documents. The complaint about the matter was filed by Anand Prakash Pathak, the temple's caretaker, who claimed that the property was an ancient religious asset that could not be transferred for personal gain. Meanwhile, Ramakant Pathak, initially appointed as the temple priest, was removed due to alleged misconduct and was ordered by the court to vacate the temple in 2016. However, Pathak stayed on despite the court order and conspired with revenue officials to get the temple land transferred in his name. Going a step further, Ramkant Pathak, on September 21, 2024, reportedly sold 21,198.8 square feet of temple land to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust for Rs 6 crore using forged documents. Following a court directive, police filed an FIR, and an investigation got underway. According to the complaint of the temple caretaker Anand Prakash Pathak, the Bhagwan Sundar Ram Ji Maharaj Temple is an ancient religious site located on Nazul land plots numbered 280, 281, 282, 283, and 289 in Chak Ramkot, Ayodhya. The temple was originally established by Ram Sundar, a childless devotee, who registered the temples ownership and management with the Sub-Registrar's Office in Faizabad on January 6, 1962, and November 8, 1967. The registered documents explicitly stated that no individual could sell or transfer any part of the temples property for personal gain. A management committee had been taking care of the temple and Anand Prakash Pathak serves as President of the committee and caretaker of the temple. The accused Ramakant Pathak was initially appointed the temples priest for performing day-to-day rituals and puja. However, he was later removed from his position after being accused of misusing and damaging temple property. However, he allegedly refused to vacate the premises. In response, the management committee filed a civil suit in the Faizabad Civil Judges Court, seeking his eviction. After years of legal proceedings, the court ruled on February 2, 2016, ordering Ramakant Pathak to vacate the temple premises within two months. However, he did not abide by the court order, leading to ongoing legal battles. According to the complaint, Ramakant Pathak, in collusion with local land mafias and a Nazul clerk named Lalamani, fraudulently altered official land records. By forging documents, he falsely registered himself as the owner of the temple land. The fake mutation was allegedly executed on September 16, 1995, where he replaced the name of the original temple founder with his own. When temple authorities discovered the forged land records, they filed an appeal with the Nazul Officer, who, after investigation, cancelled the fraudulent entries on February 21, 2019. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against Ramakant Pathak and clerk Lalamani at Kotwali Nagar police station under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120B of the IPC. Ramakant Pathak was arrested but later released on bail. Despite the cancellation of his fraudulent land ownership, Ramakant Pathak allegedly concealed the legal facts and, on September 21, 2024, sold the disputed temple land to the Temple Trust. The sale deed, registered at the Sub-Registrars Office in Ayodhya, falsely stated that the land was under his undisputed ownership. On learning about the sale, Anand Prakash Pathak filed complaints at Kotwali Nagar and Ram Janmabhoomi police stations on October 3, 2024. When no FIR was registered, he escalated the matter with the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ayodhya, on October 4, 2024. The case was eventually brought before the Additional Civil Judge (CD) Fourth/ACJM Ayodhya, who directed the Kotwali Nagar police station to register an FIR and initiate an investigation within 20 days. SHO, Kotwali, Ashwini Pandey, said that an FIR was registered under the charges of BNS 319 (2) (cheating by personation), 318 (4) (fraudulently inducing someone to give property), 338 (forgery of valuable documents), 336 (3) (forgery), and 340 (2) (use of forged documents) against Ramakant Pathak.

Railways to implement new crowd control measures at 60 stations to prevent overcrowding

NEW DELHI: In light of experiences from the festive season and events like the Maha Kumbh, the Ministry of Railways has decided to introduce new crowd control measures at 60 railway stations across the country, officials said on Friday. The decisions were taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, they informed. To manage and prevent overcrowding at platforms, the ministry has decided to create permanent waiting areas outside these stations. Passengers will be allowed to proceed towards platforms only when their train arrives. Pilot projects have already commenced at New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Patna stations, officials added. It has also been decided to introduce a complete access control system at these identified 60 stations, where only passengers with confirmed reserved tickets will be allowed onto platforms, an official said. All unauthorised entry points will be sealed. Additionally, the railways will install new foot overbridges (FOBs) at all stations. These FOBs will be 12 metres wide and 6 metres high, as wider bridges proved effective during the Maha Kumbh. The new FOBs will also have ramps to facilitate better crowd movement, an official added. The ministry has also finalised plans to enhance surveillance by installing a large number of cameras at stations and surrounding areas. War rooms will be set up at major stations where officers from all departments will coordinate crowd management efforts. Each major station will have a station director, a senior officer empowered to take financial decisions on the spot. The station director will also have the authority to regulate ticket sales based on station capacity and train availability, officials said.

Ekta Ka Mahakumbh Dawn of a new era for Viksit Bharat

The Mahakumbh has successfully concluded in Prayagraj. A grand Mahayajna of Unity has been completed. When the consciousness of a nation awakens, when it breaks free from the shackles of a centuries-old mindset of subjugation, it breathes freely in the fresh air of renewed energy. This result has been witnessed at the Ekta Ka Mahakumbh (Mahakumbh of Unity) since January 13. On January 22, 2024, during the Pran Pratishtha of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, I spoke about Devbhakti and Deshbhaktidevotion to the divine and the nation. During the Mahakumbh, Gods and Goddesses, saints, women, children, youth, senior citizens and people from all walks of life came together. We witnessed the nations awakened consciousness. This was Ekta Ka Mahakumbh, where the sentiments of 140 crore Indians converged at the same place and time for this sacred occasion. In this holy region of Prayagraj is Shringverpur, a sacred land of unity, harmony and love, where Prabhu Shri Ram and Nishadraj met. Their meeting symbolised the confluence of devotion and goodwill. Even today, Prayagraj inspires us with the same spirit. For 45 days, I witnessed crores of Indians going to the Sangam. The wave of emotions at the confluence kept rising. The holy confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati filled every pilgrim with enthusiasm, energy, and confidence. This Mahakumbh is a subject of study for modern management professionals, planning, and policy experts. Nowhere in the world is there any parallel or example of this scale. The world wondered how crores gathered at Prayagraj without formal invitations or prior communication. They came of their own accord and felt the bliss of the holy dip. I cannot forget those faces radiating immense joy and satisfaction after the dip. Women, elders, our Divyang brothers and sisters, everyone found a way to reach the Sangam. The overwhelming participation of Indias youth was particularly heartening. Their presence sends a profound message that they will be the torchbearers of our glorious culture and heritage. The number of people who arrived in Prayagraj for this Mahakumbh has undoubtedly created new records. But crores who could not reach Prayagraj were also profoundly and emotionally connected to the occasion. The sacred water brought back by pilgrims became a source of spiritual bliss for millions. What has happened in the last few weeks is unprecedented and has laid a foundation for centuries. More devotees arrived in Prayagraj than anyone had imagined. The administration had estimated attendance based on past Kumbh experiences. Nearly twice the population of the United States participated in this Ekta Ka Mahakumbh. If scholars of spirituality analyse the enthusiastic participation of crores of Indians, they will find that India, proud of its heritage, is now surging ahead with a new-found energy. I believe this is the dawn of a new era, which will script the future of a new India. For aeons, the Mahakumbh has strengthened Indias national consciousness. Every Purnakumbh witnessed a gathering of saints, scholars, and thinkers deliberating upon the state of society in their times. Their reflections used to provide a new direction to the nation and society. Every six years, during the Ardhkumbh, these ideas were reviewed. After 12 Purnakumbhs spanning 144 years, obsolete traditions were given up, newer ideas were embraced, and new traditions were created to move ahead with the times. After 144 years, in this Mahakumbh, our saints again gave us a new message for Indias development journey: Developed India Viksit Bharat. At this Ekta Ka Mahakumbh, all types of people came together. This was an embodiment of the vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. We must come together in the same spirit to build a developed India. I am reminded of the incident where, as a little boy, Sri Krishna revealed a snapshot of the universe within His mouth to His mother, Yashoda. Similarly, in this Mahakumbh, the people of India and the world have witnessed the massive potential of Indias collective strength. We must move forward with this self-confidence and dedicate ourselves to building a developed India. Earlier, saints of the Bhakti movement identified and encouraged the strength of our collective resolve. From Swami Vivekananda to Sri Aurobindo, every great thinker reminded us of the power of our collective resolve. Even Mahatma Gandhi experienced it during the freedom movement. Post-independence, if this collective strength had been correctly recognised and harnessed towards boosting the welfare of all, it would have become a great force for a newly independent nation. Unfortunately, it was not done earlier. But now, I am gladdened to witness how this collective strength of the people is coming together for a developed India. From the Vedas to Vivekananda, from the ancient scriptures to modern satellites, Indias great traditions have shaped this nation. As a citizen, I pray that we draw new inspiration from the memories of our ancestors and saints. May this Ekta Ka Mahakumbh help us move ahead with new resolve. Let us make unity our guiding principle and service to the nation, the service to the divine. During my election campaign in Kashi, I had said, Maa Ganga has called me. This was not just an emotion but also a call for responsibility towards the cleanliness of our sacred rivers. Standing at the Triveni Sangam, my resolve became even stronger. The cleanliness of our rivers is deeply linked to our own lives. Our responsibility is to celebrate our rivers as life-giving mothers. This Mahakumbh inspires us to clean our rivers. I know that organising such a massive event was no easy task. I pray to Maa Ganga, Maa Yamuna, and Maa Saraswati to forgive us in case of any shortcomings in our devotion. I see Janata Janardan, the people, as an embodiment of divinity. I seek the peoples forgiveness if there have been any shortcomings in serving them. Multitudes came to the Mahakumbh with a feeling of devotion. Serving them was a responsibility carried out with the same devotion. As a Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh, I can proudly say that under Yogi JIs leadership, the administration and the people worked to make this Ekta Ka Mahakumbh a success. Be it the state or Centre, there were no rulers or administrators; everyone was a devoted sevak. Sanitation workers, police, boatmen, drivers, and people serving food all worked tirelessly. How the people of Prayagraj welcomed the pilgrims with open hearts despite facing inconveniences was particularly inspirational. I express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to them and the people of Uttar Pradesh. I have always had unwavering confidence in our nations bright future. Witnessing this Mahakumbh has strengthened my conviction manifold. How 140 crore Indians turned the Ekta Ka Mahakumbh into a global occasion is remarkable. I will soon visit Shri Somnath, the first among the 12 Jyotirlingas, to offer the fruits of these collective national efforts to Him and to pray for every Indian. The physical form of the Mahakumbh may have culminated successfully on Mahashivratri, but like the eternal flow of the Ganga, the spiritual strength, national consciousness and unity that Mahakumbh has awakened will continue to inspire us for generations. Narendra modi prime minister of india

Former CJI appears before JPC, calls for caution in holding ONOE

NEW DELHI: At the third meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the One Nation One Election (ONOE) Bill, former Chief Justice of India U U Lalit made several suggestions, including rolling out simultaneous polls in a phased manner, said sources. During his deposition before the panel, Lalit said the concept of simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections was good in theory but many factors should be addressed for its smooth implementation. While Lalit served as the 49th CJI for a brief tenure in 2022, he was part of the Constitution bench that banned triple Talaq in 2017. In 2019, he recused himself from the Babri Masjid -Ayodhya dispute verdict. Former Law Commission of India chairperson Ritu Raj Awasthi also shared his views as the panel began consulting experts and stakeholders. However, several Opposition members criticised the Bill, with Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra claiming ONOE will weaken democracy by tinkering with tenure of legislatures and impinge on peoples rights, according to sources. Others including TMCs Kalyan Banerjee, DMKs P Wilson and Congress Manish Tewari raised several concerns regarding the Bill, arguing that it will undermine federalism and is anti- constitutional. A BJP ally wondered if a gap of five years between two elections will weaken elected representatives accountability to people, they added. Awasthi spoke in detail about the benefits of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections in terms of savings and boost to development. He argued that the Bill is in accordance with basic structure of the Constitution and it doesnt violate the Constitution or undermine federalism. Awasthi was of the opinion that Parliament can legislate the bill. Awasthi led 22nd Law Commission, which submitted its report on Simultaneous polls to the Union Law Ministry in March last year. The Law commission had recommended synchronising the terms of state Assemblies in two phases in the next five years so that the first simultaneous elections could be held in May-June 2029. IAS officer Niten Chandra, secretary of the high-level Kovind committee, and E M Sudarsana Natchiappan, a senior advocate and former Congress MP who had headed in 2015 a parliamentary committee that favoured simultaneous polls, also appeared before the panel. They could not share their views due to to paucity of time and are expected to present their views later. The parliamentary committees agenda for the February 25 meeting is briefly listed as interaction with legal experts. The high-level committee headed by ex-president Ram Nath Kovind was constituted by the Modi government on one nation one election and it had in its voluminous report strongly batted for the concept. Subsequently, the Union Cabinet accepted the committees recommendations and the government tabled two bills, including one seeking to amend the Constitution, in Lok Sabha.

Kashi-Tamil Sangamam: An ancient dialogue born anew

As the first light breaks over the subcontinent, it paints two distant shoresthe ancient ghats of Kashi and the temple-lined coast of Tamil Naduin the same golden hue. In this liminal moment, India reveals its most profound truth: that our civilisation, like our mighty rivers, flows not in isolation but in constant dialogue. This dialogue finds its contemporary resonance in the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam, where the spiritual wisdom of the north embraces the cultural richness of the south in a timeless conversation. Our civilisations story weaves through the rivers that have nourished itfrom Godavaris broad sweep to Gangas sacred flow, from Jhelums mountain song to Brahmaputras mighty current. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognises that these rivers are not merely geographies, but living symbols of our shared consciousness. Within their waters dissolves the artificial construct of north and south, just as it vanished in the footsteps of Adi Shankaras spiritual odyssey from Kerala to Kedarnath. Conceived in 2022 to revive the living bonds between Kashi and Tamil Nadu, two important centres of learning in ancient India, the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam is into its third edition. It seeks to deepen a nuanced understanding of Bharats culture which reveals that culturally, there is an uncommon level of integrity in India. Regional cultures seldom grew autonomously. They developed only as manifestations of the oneness of our nation. That is why Hindustani and Carnatic music, which sound so different, or other aspects of culture in north and south that seem so divergent, are essentially one. This synthesis has occurred in subtle but profound ways over several centuries. Coinciding with the Maha Kumbh and after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Sangamam affords a unique opportunity to the participants to feel the heartbeat of three important spiritual centresKashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya. At the heart of this cultural confluence stands the legend of sage Agastya, whose remarkable journey from Kashi to Kaveri crafted an enduring bridge. The Agastyeshwar Mahadev Mandir in Kashi stands as a testament to a legacy that transcends geographyfrom pioneering the Siddha medical tradition and composing hundreds of Rig Vedic mantras to imparting the Aditya Hridayam to Lord Ram. This ancient wisdom finds new bearing in our contemporary educational system. The National Education Policy 2020 emerges as a modern-day Sangamam, bridging classical knowledge with cutting-edge innovation, mother tongues with global discourses. Its emphasis on vernacular education and classical languages echoes Agastyas vision of knowledge that is simultaneously rooted and universal. Research on Indian knowledge systems reveals fascinating patterns of cultural exchangetrade routes that doubled as knowledge highways and pilgrim trails that became channels of artistic innovation. Todays initiatives are built upon this foundational revelation. For example, the IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has partnered with Vidya Shakti to take education to rural areas of Uttar Pradesh through online classes, bringing advanced STEM education to villages. The link between Kashi and Tamil Nadu is deep and abiding. The presence of over 450 Kashi Vishwanath temples in Tamil Nadu is not merely a statistical trivia; its living proof of an inherent unity. Each shrine represents countless stories of pilgrimage, trade and cultural exchange that shaped our national character. The ancient Tamil saying Yaadhum oore yaavarum lelir (all places are our homeland, all people our kin) finds a powerful reverberation in the worldview of Vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the world is one family). This philosophy, which predates modern notions of nationhood, offers a blueprint for inclusive development and cultural harmony. It reminds us that Bharats strength lies not in enforced uniformity but in celebrated diversity, not in erasing differences but in discovering the underlying unity that makes these differences meaningful. The Kashi-Tamil Sangamam transcends its annual calendar. It represents a continuous dialogue that pulsates with daily exchanges, academic collaborations and spiritual connections. In every student exchange programme, every joint research initiative and every cultural performance, we see the realisation of the vision, Ek Bharat sreshth Bharat. As we march towards Viksit Bharat 2047, this synergy becomes even more crucial. Our path to development must be illuminated by the wisdom of our heritage: Vikas bhi, virasat bhi. Just as Agastya built bridges of knowledge centuries ago, we must now forge new connections between our ancient wisdom and modern aspirations, between our cultural roots and technological future. The Sangamam reminds us that our journey towards becoming a developed nation is inseparable from our civilisational ethos. The time has come for every Indian to become not just a participant, but a torchbearer in this grand cultural renaissance, ensuring that as we progress materially, we remain anchored in our spiritual and cultural foundations. For in this balance lies the true essence of Indias future. May the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam recapture the cultural core of our society and help Make India Great Again. Congress returns to Gujarat after 64 years: AICC session in Ahmedabad to chart revival path

AHMEDABAD: Breaking a 64-year gap, the Indian National Congress will hold its All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on April 8 to 9, 2025. The last such session in the state was held in Bhavnagar in 1961. With party representatives from across the country gathering, the meeting is set to focus on what Congress calls the continuous attacks on the Constitution and its values, as well as the BJP's anti-people policies. The session is expected to shape the partys future course of action. The Congress, however, has been struggling in Gujarat, facing repeated electoral setbacks. Its poor performance in the recent municipal elections underscores the challenge it faces in the state. Against this backdrop, the upcoming session signals an early push for revival as the party gears up for Mission-2027. Talking to reporters at the Gujarat Congress office on Monday, state Congress President Shakti Singh Gohil said, The 51st session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) was held in Gujarat from February 19 to 22, 1938, at Haripura near Bardoli. Sardar Patel pushed for this session, At that time, the election of the Congress National President was also held in that session, where Subhas Chandra Bose was elected Congress President. Recalling the historic convention, Gohil noted, At Haripura, long before independence, Congress reaffirmed the Purna Swaraj declaration. Bose outlined a blueprint for a Planning Commissionan idea that took shape 12 years later under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after independence. The second AICC session in Gujarat took place in Bhavnagar in 1961 under Neelam Sanjiva Reddys leadership, Gohil said, highlighting the gap between major Congress gatherings in the state. Expressing gratitude, he concluded, After 1961, Gujarat will once again host the AICC session in 2025. I thank the Congress high command for this opportunity. The Congress announced that the session will kick off on April 8 with an expanded CWC meeting, setting the stage for high-stakes discussions. The momentum will carry into April 9 with an AICC delegates meet, both helmed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Powerhouses like Sonia Gandhi, who leads the Congress Parliamentary Party, and Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabhas Opposition leader, will join the deliberations. Adding weight to the gathering, Congress Chief Ministers, national office bearers, senior leaders, and AICC delegates will be in attendance, shaping the partys next moves. After the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi landed in Gujarat, firing up Congress workers in July. He declared that just as BJP fell in Ayodhya, Gujarat would be next. Top Congress leaders are now flocking to the state, amplifying the heat. Party insiders reveal Rahul had thrown down this challenge last year, vowing in Parliament, Write it down, well defeat you in Gujarat. The oppositions INDIA bloc is gearing up to make that promise a reality. Gujarat, the turf of PM Modi and Amit Shah, turns every election into a high-stakes battle. For Congress, breaking BJPs grip here is key to its revival. The party is set to chart a two-year roadmap within months. History, however, is brutalCongress has faced defeat in all seven assembly elections since 1995 and suffered total wipeouts in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls. A lone Lok Sabha seat in 2024 offers a small foothold, but the road ahead remains steep.

Mamata Banerjees 'Mrityu Kumbh' remark on Mahakumbh sparks outrage; saints demand apology

LUCKNOW: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjees remark referring to the Mahakumbh as Mrityu Kumbh evoked strong reactions among the saints and seers. The religious figures denounced her statement as an insult to Sanatan and the sanctity of Mahakumbh. Deploring the statement given by Banerjee on the floor of the West Bengal assembly, the saints unanimously demanded a public apology from her emphasising that Mahakumbh was not merely an event or a congregation but the very soul of Sanatan culture holding deep spiritual and cultural significance for crores of devotees. Notably, the West Bengal CM had dubbed Mahakumbh as Mrityu Kumbh while criticising the Yogi Adityanath government for the alleged mismanagement at the congregation which resulted in loss of many lives. Condemning Banerjees statement, Shri Mahant Jamuna Puri, National Secretary of Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani, said that such comments were highly inappropriate for a leader holding a responsible constitutional position. Prayagraj Mahakumbh is an Amrit Parva, the grandeur of which is being witnessed by the world. Mamata Banerjee should not use disrespectful words for such a sacred event, he said. Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Arun Giri of Panch Dashnam Aavahan Akhara alleged that West Bengal was turning into a death knell for Sanatanis. Thousands of Hindus have been killed, and lakhs are forced to flee during the elections in that state. Instead of worrying about Uttar Pradesh, Mamata Banerjee should focus on the situation in her own state, he said while appreciating CM Yogi for giving Mahakumbh global recognition and making it a historic event. Similarly, Mahant Rajendra Das, president, Nirmohi Ani Akhara, called Banerjees remarks an attack on Sanatan Dharma. Prayagraj Mahakumbh has taken Sanatan Dharma to newer heights. Mamata Banerjee cannot comprehend its significance as she has always disrespected Sanatan values and traditions. By making such statements, she is following the path of Arvind Kejriwal and her fate will be no different, he asserted. Mahamandaleshwar Ishwar Das Maharaj felt that Banerjees comments were the true reflection of her anti-Sanatan mindset. She has always opposed Sanatan Dharma and intends to turn Bengal into another Bangladesh, he said. Mahant Raju Das of Hanuman Garhi temple of Ayodhya called Mamata Banerjees statement 'unfortunate' seeking her apology. Similarly, Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, National General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, condemned the remarks saying that Mahakumbh was a symbol of Sanatan culture and faith and the saint community strongly denounced Mamata Banerjees words. Swami Adhokshjanand Dev Tirth of Govardhan Math Puri suggested Mamata Banerjee to visit Mahakumbh to witness its spiritual grandeur. More than 50 crore Sanatanis have attained divine experience at this Amrit Kumbh. Calling it a Kumbh of Death is highly objectionable and condemnable. Politicians should refrain from commenting on religious matters, he said. Effort to malign Mahakumbh, Sangam waters clean enough to consume: UP CM Yogi refutes CPCB report

Gyanesh Kumar, once known as 'Kahwa man in Delhi's North Block is now Chief Election Commissioner

NEW DELHI: Between 2015 and 2020, journalists often gathered at the first-floor chamber of the North Block, where Gyanesh Kumar , the newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) , served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), overseeing the crucial Jammu & Kashmir Division. Kumar, known for his welcoming nature, always greeted journalists with an infectious smile. Many arrived hoping for exclusive stories, but while major scoops were rare, they were always treated to the finest Kashmiri Kahwa. This earned him the nickname Kahwa Man among scribes in the North Block. A 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, the 61-year-old Kumar has held several high-profile and sensitive positions throughout his career. Before moving to the Election Commission last year as one of its commissioners, he retired as Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperation, his last role in government service. This was the second portfolio he held under Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Kumars efficiency in implementing government decisions brought him close to Shah. He played a key role in drafting the bill that led to the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh, in August 2019. This major political shift showcased his ability to handle intricate and sensitive matters with precision. He was also involved in critical legal and administrative matters, including the Supreme Court case on the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. His efforts were instrumental in forming the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which is overseeing the temples construction. An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur with a B.Tech in Civil Engineering, Kumar furthered his education in Business Finance from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (CFAI) and Environmental Economics from Harvard University. His diverse academic background has equipped him with a unique blend of technical, financial, and environmental expertise, making him an effective and adaptable administrator. His appointment as the countrys next CEC reflects the governments confidence in his abilities and dedication to public service. With crucial elections approaching, including the Bihar Assembly polls later this year and elections in West Bengal, Assam, and Tamil Nadu in 2026, Kumar is expected to use his vast experience to ensure a smooth electoral process.
