Railway asks RITES to design proposed permanent holding areas at railway stations

NEW DELHI: Following the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station which killed at least 18 people including four children, the Ministry of Railways has instructed Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) to design 'permanent holding areas' (PHAs) at 60 stations across the country for crowd management. These stations have been selected based on the sudden increased crowd surges during special occasions like Holi, Diwali, Chhatha and other festivals. So far, permanent holding areas (PHAs) have been developed at only 9 stations in and around Prayagraj in UP. These holding areas are located outside the platforms to help control the flow of passengers and prevent overcrowding. In view of emerging crowds of passengers for Mahakumbh ahead of Mahashivratri, falling this year on February 26, passengers holding areas on temporary basis have also been created at Patna junction, Danapur, Ara, Buxar, Sasaram Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Hajipur, Samastipur and other railway stations following the massive origination of passengers towards Mahakumbh, a senior official working with the Ministry of Railway told this newspaper. The temporary passenger holding areas have also been created at Deendayal Upadhyay Railway station, formerly known as Mughalsarai, under the east Central Railway. Upon being asked about the progress on the plan for the construction of the proposed holding areas, the railway official said, The RITES has been instructed to start working on the design of permanent holding areas keeping every factors in mind. After the design is readied by the RITES, the Ministry of Railway after wider discussion approves it and move ahead in mission mode for 60 railway stations. Many stations in Bihar, UP and other states witness sudden surges in crowds of passengers during festivals like Saharsa. Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Udna, New Delhi and other stations also witness sharp surges in number of passengers during festivals. After final design of PHAs is readied and approved, all amenities like ticketing zones, wi-fi, eateries stalls, and others would be made available in each of PHAs. Not only this, by doing some changes in the Amrit stations, the permanent holding area would also be created to control crowds during peak time, said an official. As it is roughly being estimated, the Ministry will have to spend between Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore for the development of these permanent holding areas as part of a larger effort to improve crowd management at major stations. Railway Ministry orders platform X to remove videos of New Delhi railway station stampede For the time being, in view to keep emerging crowds for Mahakumbh, massive holding areas at Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar, New Delhi, Ayodhya Dham, Vanaras ,Ballia, Siwan, Deoria, Chhapra, Rajendranagar in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Barauni, Jaynagar, Madhubani, Raxaul, and Gaya have been created by the railway. Passengers are allowed to enter the platforms based on the scheduled departure times of their trains. This initiative aims to improve crowd management and enhance passenger safety, especially during peak hours and festive seasons, the official said. Meanwhile, UP CM Yogi Aditaynath appreciated the railway for arrangements to the Mahakumbh-bound passengers. He said that more than 13,500 trains including more than 3500 special trains are in service for the Mahakumbh. The 48 digital ticketing, multilingual announcements and conveniences being provided to passengers reflect the railway's commitment, he said.

Mamata Banerjees 'Mrityu Kumbh' remark on Mahakumbh sparks outrage; saints demand apology

LUCKNOW: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjees remark referring to the Mahakumbh as Mrityu Kumbh evoked strong reactions among the saints and seers. The religious figures denounced her statement as an insult to Sanatan and the sanctity of Mahakumbh. Deploring the statement given by Banerjee on the floor of the West Bengal assembly, the saints unanimously demanded a public apology from her emphasising that Mahakumbh was not merely an event or a congregation but the very soul of Sanatan culture holding deep spiritual and cultural significance for crores of devotees. Notably, the West Bengal CM had dubbed Mahakumbh as Mrityu Kumbh while criticising the Yogi Adityanath government for the alleged mismanagement at the congregation which resulted in loss of many lives. Condemning Banerjees statement, Shri Mahant Jamuna Puri, National Secretary of Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani, said that such comments were highly inappropriate for a leader holding a responsible constitutional position. Prayagraj Mahakumbh is an Amrit Parva, the grandeur of which is being witnessed by the world. Mamata Banerjee should not use disrespectful words for such a sacred event, he said. Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Arun Giri of Panch Dashnam Aavahan Akhara alleged that West Bengal was turning into a death knell for Sanatanis. Thousands of Hindus have been killed, and lakhs are forced to flee during the elections in that state. Instead of worrying about Uttar Pradesh, Mamata Banerjee should focus on the situation in her own state, he said while appreciating CM Yogi for giving Mahakumbh global recognition and making it a historic event. Similarly, Mahant Rajendra Das, president, Nirmohi Ani Akhara, called Banerjees remarks an attack on Sanatan Dharma. Prayagraj Mahakumbh has taken Sanatan Dharma to newer heights. Mamata Banerjee cannot comprehend its significance as she has always disrespected Sanatan values and traditions. By making such statements, she is following the path of Arvind Kejriwal and her fate will be no different, he asserted. Mahamandaleshwar Ishwar Das Maharaj felt that Banerjees comments were the true reflection of her anti-Sanatan mindset. She has always opposed Sanatan Dharma and intends to turn Bengal into another Bangladesh, he said. Mahant Raju Das of Hanuman Garhi temple of Ayodhya called Mamata Banerjees statement 'unfortunate' seeking her apology. Similarly, Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, National General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, condemned the remarks saying that Mahakumbh was a symbol of Sanatan culture and faith and the saint community strongly denounced Mamata Banerjees words. Swami Adhokshjanand Dev Tirth of Govardhan Math Puri suggested Mamata Banerjee to visit Mahakumbh to witness its spiritual grandeur. More than 50 crore Sanatanis have attained divine experience at this Amrit Kumbh. Calling it a Kumbh of Death is highly objectionable and condemnable. Politicians should refrain from commenting on religious matters, he said. Effort to malign Mahakumbh, Sangam waters clean enough to consume: UP CM Yogi refutes CPCB report

Prayagraj, Kashi, Ayodhya showcase Indias true potential: UP CM Yogi Adityanath

LUCKNOW: Treating the countrys cultural heritage and spiritual prosperity with respect, honour and pride fosters both unity and economic growth as has been seen during the Mahakumbh , said UP CM Yogi Adityanath here on Monday. He noted that under PM Modis guidance, cities like Ayodhya, Kashi, and Prayagraj have not only manifested the revival of Indian culture but have also contributed significantly to the economy, showcasing India's immense potential on the global stage. While interacting with the young entrepreneurs from Mumbai at -- Dialogue with Young Entrepreneurs at his residence, Yogi challenged critics of Mahakumbh with facts. At the event organised by Yuva Bharat Sansthan, the Chief Minister asked the entrepreneurs if an investment of Rs 7,500 crore by both the Central and State governments generates an economic activity worth Rs 3 lakh crore to Rs 3.5 lakh crore. Isnt it a wise investment? So far, 53 crore devotees have taken a sacred dip at Sangam during Mahakumbh since January 13, and the stream is likely to continue with the same pace till the conclusion of the mela on February 26. This is a testimony to India's spiritual and economic strength, said the CM. He highlighted an unprecedented resurgence of faith and cultural pride among the countrymen under PM Modis leadership in the last decade. It has become possible with the restoration of the countrys spiritual heritage while acknowledging the significance of places long associated with its identity, said the CM. He compared the current footfall of 53 crore over 36 days at Mahakumbh with that of 2013 Kumbh when 12 crore devotees had participated in the Mela over a period of 55 days. In 2019, when Ardh Kumbh (renamed as Kumbh), the number had doubled to 24 crore. This year, during the 45-day Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, 53 crore devotees have arrived in just 36 days. However, the CM attributed the massive surge of devotees to logistics and strategic initiatives to accommodate it. In just 35 days, besides, 40 routine flights, over 700 chartered flights landed in and around Prayagraj. The Indian Railways have been running hundreds of special trains daily while the Surface Transport Corporation has deployed a fleet of 14,000 buses to facilitate the pilgrimage, observed Yogi. From January 28 to 30, 15 crore devotees took a holy dip. On January 28, around 5.5 crore devotees came, followed by 8 crore on January 29, and 2.5 crore on January 30, the CM shared with the gathering. Emphasizing that while respecting faith, its economic impact was equally significant, CM Yogi cited the example of Shivalik Park wherein the investor, who set up a project a replica of the Dwadash Jyotirlinga on Mela premises-- committed to funding the project on a profit-sharing model of 50-50. Prayagraj Municipal Corporation allocated 11 acres of land for the initiative, the firm invested Rs 14 crore. Within the first 21 days, it recovered its investment amount earning an equal profit. Even the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is also earning revenue from the project. Citing the success of Shivalik Park, Yogi asserted that spiritual tourism had immense potential with lakhs getting jobs, thereby, contributing to Uttar Pradeshs economic growth. He highlighted the infrastructural growth in the cities like Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Kashi, Chitrakoot, Gorakhpur, and Naimisharanya. He attributed the development of those religious and spiritual centres to the strong political will despite fierce opposition by the political rivals. The impact is clear. At Ram temple on Shree Ram Janmabhoomi premises, Rs 700 crores came through donations in just one year after the consecration of Ram Lall in sanctum sanctorum of the upcoming temple in January, last year, he remarked. The CM invited the entrepreneurs to Shri Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Kashi, where millions of devotees from India and across the world were reaffirming their faith while showcasing India's cultural and economic power to the world.

'There is a limit': SC irked over filing of fresh pleas relating to validity of 1991 Places of Worship Act

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed displeasure over the filing of several fresh pleas in a case related to validity of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 which mandates the religious character of a place to be maintained as it existed on August 15, 1947. A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar also indicated that it may not take up the pending scheduled petitions, heard earlier by a three-judge bench, during the day as it was sitting in a combination of two judges. We might not be able to take it up, the CJI said when senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for a litigant, mentioned a fresh plea for hearing during the day. At the outset of the day's proceedings, the senior advocate mentioned the matter. There is a limit to which petitions can be filed. So many IAs (interim applications) have been filed...we might not be able to take it up, the CJI said, adding that a date may be given in March. The top court, through its December 12, 2024 order, effectively stalled proceedings in about 18 lawsuits filed by various Hindu parties seeking survey to ascertain the 'original religious character' of 10 mosques, including Gyanvapi at Varanasi, Shahi Idgah Masjid at Mathura and Shahi Jama Masjid at Sambhal where five Muslim youth including a minor was killed in alleged police firing during a court-ordered survey. It had then listed all the petitions for an effective hearing on February 17. Post December 12, several petitions have been filed, including by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Party leader and Kairana MP Iqra Choudhary and the Congress Party seeking effective implementation of the 1991 law. Choudhary, the Lok Sabha MP from UP's Kairana, on February 14 sought to curb the increasing trend of legal actions targeting mosques and dargahs, which he submitted threaten communal harmony and the secular fabric of the country. The top court previously agreed to examine a separate plea of Owaisi with a similar prayer. The Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti, a Hindu outfit, had moved the top court seeking to intervene in cases filed against the validity of provisions of the 1991 law. Earlier, the bench was hearing about six petitions, including the lead one filed by lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay, challenging various provisions of the 1991 law. The law prohibits conversion of any place of worship and provides for the maintenance of the religious character of any place of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947. 'Places of Worship Act 1991 essential to safeguard secularism in India': INC seeking direction to be intervenor However, the dispute relating to Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid at Ayodhya was kept out of its purview. Muslim bodies like Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind seek strict implementation of the 1991 law to maintain communal harmony and to preserve the present status of mosques, sought to be reclaimed by Hindus claiming that they were temples before invaders razed them. On the other hand, petitioners like Updhyay have sought setting aside of Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Act. Among the reasons was also the contention that these provisions took away the right of judicial remedy to reclaim a place of worship of any person or a religious group. Ultimately, we will have to hear the arguments, the bench had said, observing the primary issue was with regard to Section 3 and 4 of the 1991 law. While Section 3 deals with the bar of conversion of places of worship, Section 4 pertains to declarations as to the religious character of certain places of worship and bar of jurisdiction of courts, etc. The Gyanvapi Mosque management committee, in its intervention plea, opposed several pending petitions that challenge the constitutional validity of the 1991 law. The mosque committee listed a series of contentious claims made over the years concerning various mosques and dargahs (shrines), including the Shahi Idgah Masjid in Mathura, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque near Delhi's Qutub Minar, the Kamal Maula Mosque in Madhya Pradesh, and others. It, therefore, said the petitions challenging the Act were filed with mischievous intent to facilitate lawsuits against these religious sites, which the 1991 Act currently protected.

In the wake of the stampede at Delhi Railway Station that claimed 18 lives on Saturday, railway stations across Uttar Pradesh have been put on high alert following the massive convergence of devotees reaching Prayagraj for a holy dip at Sangam during the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela. Over 52 crore people have bathed on the ghats along Sangam in Prayagraj. However, the massive crowds of devotees have resulted in severe congestion on roads and railway stations, leading to significant travel disruptions. Over the weekend, Prayagraj and its neighbouring districts, including Ayodhya, Gonda, Varanasi, Fatehpur, Gorakhpur, and even the state capital Lucknow, experienced huge crowds at railway stations. Besides the above-mentioned stations, almost all other stations, including Chitrakoot, Kannauj, and Jhansi, have been put on alert after the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. At Charbagh Railway Station in Lucknow, cops have been carrying out inspections. They have prepared a list of trains going to Prayagraj and are brainstorming on arrangements to manage the crowd. They are also checking CCTV footage. The railways are witnessing a massive surge in footfall in view of the ongoing Mela. The trains reaching Prayagraj are overcrowded at stations, with passengers awaiting Prayagraj-bound or even adjoining district trains to reach the Mahakumbh, despite the three significant 'Amrit Snans' (holy dips) on the auspicious days of Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, and Basant Panchami being over. ADG Railways, Prakash D, has issued directives to the authorities concerned to ensure the deployment of GRP personnel at all railway stations across the state. Moreover, the GRP has also been directed to manage the crowd and maintain order on the platforms while working in coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and railway authorities. In order to avoid any chaos due to overcrowding at railway stations, GRP personnel have been deployed on footover bridges. Special caution is being taken on the platforms through which the Prayagraj-bound special Mela trains are passing. Meanwhile, the police authorities of all the districts through which trains for Prayagraj are passing have deployed district police personnel around railway stations for crowd management.

SC to hear pleas concerning Places of Worship Act 1991 on February 17

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will hear a batch of pleas relating to the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, on February 17. As per the causelist for February 17 uploaded on the apex court's website, a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan is slated to hear the matter. The Act prohibits conversion of any place of worship and provides for the maintenance of the religious character of any place of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947. However, the dispute relating to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue in Ayodhya was kept out of its purview. Some of the pleas filed in the apex court have challenged the validity of certain provisions of the 1991 law. On January 2, the top court agreed to examine a plea filed by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi seeking effective implementation of the places of worship law. On December 12 last year, a bench headed by the chief justice, while acting on a batch of pleas relating to the 1991 law, restrained all courts from entertaining fresh suits and passing any effective interim or final orders in pending cases seeking to reclaim religious places, particularly mosques and dargahs. The bench was hearing petitions, including the lead plea filed by lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay, challenging various provisions of the 1991 law. The top court through its December 12 order, effectively stalled proceedings in about 18 lawsuits filed by various Hindu parties seeking survey to ascertain original religious character of 10 mosques, including the Gyanvapi in Varanasi, the Shahi Idgah Masjid in Mathura and Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, where four persons' lives were snuffed out in clashes last year. As the matter is sub judice before this court, we deem it appropriate to direct that, though fresh suits may be filed, no suits would be registered and no proceedings shall be undertaken therein till further orders of this court, it had said. The top court also said the primary issue that arises for consideration was with regard to Sections 3 and 4 of the 1991 Act and its contours, as well as the width and expanse of the said provisions. While Section 3 deals with barring conversion of places of worship, Section 4 pertains to declaration as to the religious character of certain places of worship and bar of jurisdiction of courts, etc. There are several cross petitions which seek strict implementation of the 1991 law to maintain communal harmony and to preserve the present status of mosques, sought to be reclaimed by Hindus on the ground that they were temples before invaders razed them. Various Muslim parties, including the Gyanvapi mosque management committee, moved the apex court to oppose several pending petitions that challenge the constitutional validity of the 1991 law. The mosque committee listed a series of contentious claims made over the years concerning various mosques and dargahs (shrines), including the Shahi Idgah Masjid in Mathura, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid near Delhi's Qutub Minar, and the Kamal Maula mosque in Madhya Pradesh, among others.

SP leader moves SC for implementation of Worship Act

Samajwadi Party leader and Kairana MP Iqra Choudhary has moved the Supreme Court seeking effective implementation of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991. This move comes amidst several petitions challenging the law's validity, including those filed by the Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay. The Supreme Court, in December 2022, had restrained all courts from examining fresh suits and passing interim orders in pending cases seeking to reclaim religious places. The Act aims to maintain the religious character of places of worship as they existed on August 15, 1947, but the dispute relating to Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid at Ayodhya was kept out of its purview. The court has listed Choudhary's plea with other pending pleas for February 17.

Mahakumbh 2025: 50 crore people take holy dip in a month, more than the population of a country

Its been a month since the inception of Mahakumbh on 13 th January 2025. With 15 days more, the event is expected to attract a massive surge in visitors. The three Amrit Snans have already been concluded on Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya and Basant Panchami. Another important Snan was held on Magh Purnima. On the occasion of Magh Purnima on Wednesday alone, nearly two crore devotees took the holy dip in the sacred waters in Prayagraj. The population of the city is around 60 lakhs, and the devotees reaching on Magh Purnima were four times to this number. The visitors from far off places took the holy dip with chants of spiritual hymns and bhajans. Even though there has been a major mishap in Prayagraj when a stampede occurred at the Sangam nose on Triveni ghat, the administration has done excellent work managing the traffic and security at the event. As we have witnessed the peaceful commencement of the snan on Magh Purnima without any stampede, panic or chaos. In the last one month, the Mahakumbh has attracted a massive 50 crore visitors, making it the largest spiritual gathering in the world. It not only includes the common people, but also Indias PM, President, dignitaries and delegation from all over the world, political leaders, celebrities, the overall sections of the society. This figure speaks for itself, as no other country in the world, except for India and China has this huge population. The kind of gathering is one of a kind, something really unimaginable and unbelievable. Because, if you get on to add the population of Worlds 119 countries, that together forms a population of 50 crores. Even the combined populations of USA and Canada does not reach this count. After the stampede, the Uttar Pradesh Government came up with stricter and more organized traffic arrangements as well as efficient crowd control scrapping the VIP culture. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself monitored the situation closely on the snan schedules of Basant Panchami and Maghi Amavasya. It has been known that the CM ensured a close watch since the midnight. The DGP of Uttar Pradesh Prashant Kumar, Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad and other senior officials have been managing it all smoothly in Prayag. The challenging situations have posed all throughout. Not only the surging crowd at the Sangam, there was another significant challenge of the moving crowd of devotees from states of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar among others. Followed with the devotees heading towards Ayodhya to offer prayers at the newly established Ram temple, as well as at the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, again a massive footfall. Less than a fortnight left for its commencement, let us see at what figure does the Mahakumbh concludes! The estimated target of 40 crore has already been surpassed, with a massive spillover of devotees.

Maha Kumbh: Strict Traffic Rules in Prayagraj, Varanasi Restricts Outside Vehicles

PRAYAGRAJ: With the Maha Kumbh Mela going on in Prayagraj, traffic authorities placed strict rules to control the crowd. Traffic restrictions are also in place in other religious cities like Varanasi. Meanwhile, Ayodhyas Ram Temple has changed its timings due to the high number of visitors. Traffic Ban in Prayagraj Prayagraj officials have announced new traffic rules ahead of February 12, which is Maghi Purnima. On this day, millions of devotees are expected to take a holy dip in the river. To control overcrowding, the police banned vehicles inside the fair area since 4.00-am on Tuesday. From 5-pm the same day, the restriction will extend to the whole city. Devotees coming from outside must park their vehicles in designated parking areas. Even Kalpvasis, who stay near the Sangam for a specific period, will not be allowed to drive in the restricted areas. These rules will stay in place until all devotees leave the fair area. However, emergency services will be allowed. After a tragic stampede on January 29 that killed at least 30 pilgrims, the government is being extra cautious. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a meeting with the police on Monday night and reviewed the arrangements. He instructed officials to use all available parking spaces, which can hold over 5 lakh vehicles. Ram Mandir Changes Darshan Timings Due to the huge crowds, Ayodhyas Ram Temple has adjusted its 'darshan' (worship) timings. The temple will now open an hour earlier, from 6 AM to 10 PM every day. Previously, it used to open at 7.00 am. The temples aarti schedule has also changed: Mangala Aarti now starts at 4.00 am instead of 4.30 am, followed by a short temple closure. Shringar Aarti will take place at 6.00 am, marking the temple's opening for visitors. Rajbhog will be offered at 12 noon, allowing devotees to have darshan. Sandhya Aarti will be held at 7 PM, during which the temple will close for 15 minutes. Shayan Aarti, the last prayer of the day, will now happen at 10 PM instead of 9:30 PM, after which the temple will close for the night. Traffic Rules in Varanasi In Varanasi, restrictions on outside vehicles are back in place. The ban was briefly lifted for a few hours on Saturday evening, but this caused heavy traffic jams across the city. To ease congestion, buses and vehicles without Varanasi registration are being diverted to parking zones outside the city. More parking areas have also been set up at schools and colleges. Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal confirmed that these measures will continue to ensure smooth movement in the city.

UP DGP commends cops for ensuring safe, seamless spiritual experience for devotees at Mahakumbh

LUCKNOW: With a massive congregation of devotees at Mahakumbh and the incessant stream of pilgrims converging in Praygaraj, UP DGP Prashant Kumar issued a statement late on Monday night. Mahakumbh 2025 is witnessing the largest congregation of humanity in history. With over 40 crore pilgrims having already taken a sacred dip at the Sangam and millions arriving each day, managing the unprecedented movement of people and vehicles is a challenge, he said. No city, no administration, and no police force in the world has ever encountered this before, he added. The scale of the spiritual gathering has pushed Prayagraj's infrastructure beyond its maximum capacity, creating delays in traffic movement inevitable -- not due to mismanagement, but due to the sheer volume of devotees. It may be recalled that the Opposition parties including the Samajwadi Party and its chief Akhilesh Yadav have been attacking the state dispensation over the traffic jams as a consequence of the massive rush of devotees in the Sangam city and the approaching Highways to Madhya Pradesh. Millions throng Mahakumbh; traffic congestion throws travel plans out of gear in Prayagraj, Ayodhya The DGP added that despite the existing challenges of ever-swelling crowd of devotees, the UP Police personnelfrom constables on the ground to senior officerswere working tirelessly, ensuring smooth traffic flow, assisting pilgrims, and maintaining law and order with exceptional patience and skill. Managing this ocean of humanity is a Herculean task, and every police officer on duty is displaying unmatched dedication to make Mahakumbh-2025 a safe and seamless experience for all, he said. Over 40 crore pilgrims take dip in Mahakumbh The strategic planning, real-time decision-making by the state leadership and relentless execution of the plan by UP Police officers were setting a global benchmark in managing large-scale human movements. Future generations will take this moment as a testament to discipline, determination, and duty, said DGP Prashant Kumar. Referring to the belligerence of the Opposition and other factors, DGP Kumar said that while criticism found its space in media and social media, it was heartening to see numerous video testimonials from pilgrims. MP CM Mohan Yadav appeals to Mahakumbh-bound pilgrims to avoid travelling due to massive rush, traffic jam He added that they were from common devotees and prominent personalities, appreciating the seamless organization, security, and assistance provided by UP Police and the administration. Their words of gratitude reflect the massive effort and commitment behind the scenes, ensuring that Mahakumbh remains a sacred and well-organized spectacle despite the unimaginable scale, he also said. Today (Monday) afternoons videos from Prayagraj city and the inter-district borders clearly show traffic moving almost smoothly once again, a reassuring sign of UP Polices unyielding efforts, DGP added. Instead of focusing solely on criticism, one must acknowledge the extraordinary perseverance of our police force. I salute every police officer -- the true unsung heroes -- who are turning the impossible into reality, every single day, DGP also added elevating the morale of the UP cops.

As on Monday afternoon, over 44.5 crore devotees had already taken the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam since the Mahakumbh was inaugurated on January 13. The unprecedented rush of devotees from across India and abroad has resulted in massive traffic jams, as long as 40 km. The congestion is not restricted to Prayagraj alone, but is felt in the adjoining state of Madhya Pradesh too, with travellers spending 10-15 hours in vehicles stuck in traffic. As per the official sources, a total of 14 lakh four-wheelers entered Prayagraj during the weekend. The people heading to Prayagraj are taking 4-5 times longer to reach the destination. Due to traffic, the 6-7 hour journey from Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur to Prayagraj is now a whole day's worth of travel. Similarly, the 2.5 hour long journey between Prayagraj and Varanasi is now taking nine hours. In response to the severe road congestion, BJP national president and Union Health minister JP Nadda has requested UP and MP party workers to assist the administration in streamlining the traffic besides making adequate food and healthcare arrangements for the devotees reaching Mahakumbh. In addition to other measures, the railway authorities of the region have decided to extend the single-direction movement plan at railway stations in and around Prayagraj to ensure smooth and safe travel for devotees. As per Northern Central Railway PRO Amit Singh, the plan has been drawn considering the huge crowd of passengers arriving at Prayagraj daily. The measure aims at preventing congestion and streamlining the passenger movement. Moreover, the civil police, taxis auto, buses and e-rickshaws have been asked to adhere to the single-direction plan for seamless transit of the devotees. Such was the rush of devotees on Sunday that the railway authorities were forced to implement the emergency plan of Mauni Amavasya Amrit Snan at Prayagraj junction. The Sangam station has been closed from February 9 till February 14 due to the rush of devotees. Even shuttle buses plied to ferry pilgrims to Mela area are getting stuck in traffic bottlenecks in various localities of Prayagraj. The situation in Ayodhya is also similar to that of Prayagraj. On Sunday, the temple trust and the administration had issued an appeal urging the people to postpone their plans for the darshan of Ram Lalla due to uncontrollable crowding. Prayagraj Ayodhya Highway, Rae Bareli Ayodhya Highway are jampacked with vehicles. A remarkable surge in the number of devotees is being observed on special festival days. On Mauni Amavasya (January 29), a record-breaking 7.64 crore pilgrims took a holy dip, while the previous day (January 28) saw over 4.99 crore devotees at the Sangam. On Makar Sankranti (January 14), 3.50 crore worshippers participated in the sacred ritual.

BJP's Chandrabhanu Paswan defeats SP's Prasad by over 61,000 votes in Milkipur bypoll

AYODHYA: BJP candidate Chandrabhanu Paswan has won the Milkipur bypolls by a margin of 61,710 votes, according to the Election Commission website. While Paswan polled over 1.46 lakh votes, his nearest rival Samajwadi Party's Ajit Prasad garnered 84,687 votes, it said. Earlier, Paswan, 38, took a decisive lead over SP's Prasad, 42, by over 61,000 votes after the 29th round of counting for the Milkipur assembly bypoll on Saturday, officials said. They said after 29 rounds, BJP's Paswan had got 1,45,685 votes, while Prasad had polled 84,266 votes, a lead of 61,319 votes. According to the official website of the Election Commission, after 28 rounds of counting, Paswan (with 1,39,507 votes) was leading Prasad (79,210 votes) by a margin of 60,297 votes. Santosh Kumar of the Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) has got 5,158 votes. The Milkipur bypoll was necessitated after local MLA Awadhesh Prasad vacated the seat following his Faizabad win in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The SP fielded his son Ajit Prasad in the bypoll even as BJP opted for a party cadre Paswan, both from the Pasi community. While the SP was anxious to retain the seat it won in 2022 UP polls, the BJP was anxious to avenge its Faizabad loss that had happened within five months of the high-profile consecration of Ram temple at Ayodhya. Milkipur was the only seat the BJP lost in Ayodhya district in the 2022 Assembly polls. The BSP did not contest the bypoll while the Congress backed its alliance partner SP. Before the counting began, Paswan offered prayers at a temple. Later as trends firmed, Paswan told PTI Videos that he was grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for their guidance and support. He also expressed his gratitude to voters. We took the welfare programmes and schemes of the double engine BJP government to the people of Milkipur and they supported us, Paswan said. We will not leave any stone unturned for the development of Milkipur, he said in anticipation of a likely win. SP MP Awadhesh Prasad, who had earlier said he was confident of a win for his son, later accused the BJP government of misusing official machinery. Officials worked under pressure from the state government, he alleged. The BJP has been involved in large-scale irregularities. The Election Commission and observers were informed about them in writing but no action was taken, he said.

Milkipur bypoll: Big win for BJP, SP alleges foul play

LUCKNOW: BJP registers big win in Milkipur in Ayodhya district as BJP's Chandrabhanu Paswan secures seat by a margin of more than 65,000 votes over SP's Ajit Prasad. The battle for the Milkipur seat had turned into a prestige battle between the Samajwadi Party and the BJP, with UP CM Yogi Adityanath personally supervising the elections. The BJP, by securing the Milkipur assembly segment, has succeeded in ending a hiatus of eight years. Paswan on Saturday expressed his gratitude to BJP, I thank Modi ji and Yogi ji. I thank the voters for their support. I have received huge respect and support. Union Minister OP Rajbhar said that the people of Ayodhya and Milkipur have chosen development and Yogi Aditynath once again. I had already said earlier that the NDA candidate will win with a thumping majority. The public wants development and they are happy with the work by Yogi ji, Rajbhar said while talking to media persons. The Milkipur bypoll was necessitated after SP's Awadhesh Prasad vacated the seat upon his election to the Lok Sabha in 2024. Awadhesh Prasad had defeated two-time BJP MP Lallu Singh in the Faizabad constituency. SP's bypoll candidate Ajit Prasad is the son of Awadesh Prasad. Amid the counting of votes, SP MP Awadhesh Prasad had accused the BJP of being a dishonest party while SP chief Akhilesh Yadav called BJP's victory fake. Over 65% voting recorded in Milkipur by-election, surpasses 2022 turnout

LUCKNOW: The bypoll to Milkipur assembly constituency under Faizabad parliamentary segment broke all previous records since independence with 65.25 per cent voters exercising their franchise till 5 pm on Wednesday. The bypoll was necessitated after SP MLA Awdhesh Prasad vacated it after getting elected to Lok Sabha from Faizabad in 2024 general elections. As per the Election Commission of India, 65.25 per cent voting was recorded till 5 pm with voters still standing in the queues. The voting percentage is likely to go up in the final count by the end of the day in the high-stake battle between the BJP and the SP. In 2022 UP assembly polls, Milkipur had recorded 60.58 per cent votes and the seat was won by Awdhesh Prasad as SP candidate. He had wrested the seat from the BJP defeating MLA Baba Gorakhnath. In the current bypoll, the fate of 10 candidates was at stake. While the ruling BJP had fielded Chandrabhan Paswan, a lawyer and a grass root worker of the party, SP had reposed faith in Ajit Prasad, son of Awdhesh Prasad. Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan had also fielded a candidate Santosh Chaudhury, an SP rebel from his Azad Samaj Party, while the BSP kept away from the bypoll. Meanwhile, Congress too decided against fielding its candidate and extended support to the SP. Milkipur, which is dominated by Pasi community among the Scheduled castes, witnessed a battle of nerves with the saffron brigade leaving no stone unturned to wrest the seat form SP, thereby, urging voters to avenge the defeat of 2024 Lok Sabha election. In a bid to salvage its prestige, the BJP intended to convey the message that it is still standing firm in Ayodhya, while the SP relied on its Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak (PDA) narrative which fetched it good results in 2024.

Milkipur bypoll: Presiding officers trying to meet 'fake voting target' for BJP, claims Akhilesh

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav shared an audio clip, claiming it shows that presiding officers in the Milkipur bypoll are trying to meet a arget of fake voting to help the ruling BJP. Yadav made the allegations in a post on X and attached what he said was the audio clip of a sting operation. He said elections overseen by the presiding officers should be cancelled immediately and should be suspended on the basis of prima facie audio evidence. The SP chief also called on the Election Commission and Supreme Court to take cognisance of such enemies of democracy. This is a sting operation exposing the truth of presiding officers who are completing targets of fake voting for the ruling party. Elections at their booths should be cancelled immediately and they should be suspended on the basis of prima facie audio evidence and then dismissed after proper judicial action, Yadav said. More such videos and audios of election rigging and manipulation by the officers are coming out. When they lose their jobs and get defamed in the society, maybe then their integrity and conscience will wake up, he said. The government, the former chief minister said, will wash its hands off them after using them, but the officers will be in jails and will live a life of disgrace in the eyes of their society, their family and children. pic.twitter.com/mkN25hgu9Z Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) February 5, 2025 Yadav added that all honest and truthful officers who refused to partake in the arget of fake voting given by the BJP office should be praised. In another post earlier with photographs, Yadav claimed that police personnel were checking voters' IDs in the Milkipur constituency, where polling is underway for the assembly by-election, to create fear among them and urged the Election Commission to immediately remove them. In a post on X, Yadav shared a picture of a police officer checking the ID card of a person outside a polling booth. The Election Commission should immediately take cognisance of the pictures related to this news that Ayodhya Police is checking the ID cards of voters in Milkipur, in which senior police officers are also involved, Yadav said in his post in Hindi. This is a murder of democracy by indirectly influencing voting by creating fear among voters. Such people should be removed immediately and punitive action should be taken, he said. Ayodhya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raj Karan Nayyar said the picture shows police personnel verifying the ID card of a polling agent. He asserted that law enforcement officers are not checking voters' identification documents. Yadav also posted another video on X, claiming another case of fake voting in Rai Patti Amaniganj. The person casting fake votes in Rai Patti Amaniganj in the Milkipur by-election has made it clear how the officials in the BJP government are involved in rigging. Does the Election Commission need any more proof? the SP chief said in his post. In Milkipur, it is a two-way contest in the assembly bypoll between SP's Ajit Prasad and the BJP's Chandrabhanu Paswan. Ten candidates are in the fray in total. In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Milkipur was the only assembly seat the BJP lost in Ayodhya district. The bypoll was necessitated as SP's Awadhesh Prasad vacated the Milkipur seat after winning the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Even as the SP is looking to retain the seat, the BJP sees the election as an opportunity to avenge its loss in Faizabad.

AYODHYA: Over 13 percent voters cast their votes in the first two hours of polling for the bypoll in Milkipur Assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Voting began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm, officials said. According to the Election Commission, 13.34 percent votes were cast till 9 am. Though there are 10 candidates in the fray, the main contest is between Samajwadi Party's Ajit Prasad and the BJP's Chandrabhanu Paswan. Talking to reporters IG, Pravin Kumar said, Voting is going on peacefully at all polling stations. Magistrates and police officers are on patrol. Paramilitary forces have been deployed at important polling stations. Strict action will be taken against those spreading rumours or indulging in any other illegal activity, he added. Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) has also fielded a candidate from the seat. The bypoll was necessitated when SP leader Awadhesh Prasad vacated the Milkipur seat after winning the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
