Controversy, shock over publicised Nude Party planned in Chhattisgarh capital, six detained

RAIPUR: An invitation poster of a Nude party luring young men and women to present themselves undressed at a high-profile gathering in Chhattisgarh capital generated much disquiet and controversy over promoting obscenity, leading the Raipur police to detain six for interrogation. The detained youths, including the organisers of the event, associated with Hyper Club and SS Farm, were questioned by a team of crime branch police. The party planned in a private farmhouse now stands cancelled. The police have not ruled out the possibility of arrests of the duo, besides the others, if found involved in illicit activities. Two FIRs have been lodged against the organisers. The event was also nicknamed the stranger party. Besides the evident forbidden activities, everything, right from liquor, illegal drugs, was presumed accessible to those attending the Nude party on September 21. The police swung into action following a viral poster grabbing attention to Nude Party, creating controversy. The preliminary examination of mobile phones of the two detained showed the artists from Mumbai and Bangalore were also lined up for the party. Many cited the move as an attempt to start in Raipur an indecent get-together culture commonly seen in places in Europe and the US. Criticism began pouring in from the politicians too, who sought an immediate ban on any such emerging bad party plan and a stringent action against the organisers. The upcoming party, according to sources, is to be held privately with entry given only to a limited people. The entire programme was kept so confidential that information about the venue got shared only in private with registered members barely a few hours before. Outsiders are strictly prohibited from joining the party once the registration process ends. Mobile phones are not allowed. The organisers are also suspected of being a part of some drug cartel supplying it for flagrant abuse, often seen in high-profile parties. The entry fee for the nude party was fixed at Rs 40,000 with some offers for each individual. Even Rs one lakh was offered by some couples. Raipur police are inquiring into the bizarre lewd invitation shared on some social media. We are investigating in-depth why such a party was planned and the persons behind it. Such parties can never be allowed, said Lal Umed Singh, Raipur senior superintendent of police. Its shocking and shameful, a Nude party as a social gathering organised for the first time in Chhattisgarh under the BJP regime, said Deepak Baij, state Congress president. The state BJP too, expressing concern, condemned the move to organise Nude Party. We are worried about youths planning to be a part of such an event that should not be allowed in future. Congress should avoid doing politics on the sensitive issue, said Shyam Behari Jaiswal, state health minister

Jyotirgamaya: Diya Dhvani, a musical experience under candlelight

Chennai has been the epicentre of Carnatic and classical music, its sabhas and auditoriums reverberating with ragas and rhythms. For a change, from tomorrow, the citys cultural landscape is set to witness something truly out of the usual. Live4You and SciArtsRUs present Jyotirgamaya: Diya Dhvani, a festival that celebrates Carnatic and classical music steeped in tradition, yet framed in a fresh perspective. To give the music a different positioning and to be looked at from a different perspective, the organisers have chosen the century-old Museum Theatre as the venue. Generally, concerts happen in a typical auditorium. We wanted to do it in a different venue, and the Museum Theatre is more like an Opera Hall. This will be done in ambient lighting with candles and diyas, shares RSV Prakash, founder and chairperson of Live4You. The four-day celebration will bring together 12 concerts by stalwarts, including Ranjani and Gayatri, Sikkil Gurucharan and Anil Srinivasan, Ramakrishnan Murthy, and Anitha Guhas Bharathanjali at 6.45 pm, alongside a host of up-and-coming performers who will take the stage from 3 pm onwards. You can catch these artistes performing in other places also. But the candlelight is something that is attracting people, points out Prakash. Ramakrishnan Murthy It is not just the venue and ambience that make the event unique, but also its underlying philosophy. Jyotirgamaya highlights the value and the importance of light. In this particular ambience and this music concert, it is unified by the word Nada, meaning the primordial sound, which is what music is born from, explains vocalist Ramakrishnan Murthy. He draws from history to deepen the connection. If you combine Nada and Jyoti, theres only one person in the Carnatic music landscape, one of the most important composers, that is Muthuswami Dikshitar. He is known by the name Nada Jyoti because his music shines a light on all of us. And this year, coincidentally, marks Muthuswami Dikshitars 250th birth anniversary. So, it would be appropriate to take this opportunity to highlight some magnum opus compositions of his and dedicate the concept to his never-dying, and enlightening spirit. For Sikkil Gurucharan, Jyotirgamaya is personal as much as it is artistic. It is anything that instils hope and wants me to keep improving my music. He will be performing alongside pianist Anil Srinivasan at this one-of-a-kind event. Sikkil Gurucharan Gurucharan, in a conversation with Anil, had reminisced about how they belonged to the era that was before reels and Instagram and the notions. One thing that has always kept us going is how we try to imbibe different confluences of music in our presentation. This evening is going to be a celebration of every influence of music that has made our collaboration even more special, he says. The duo, starting from Carnatic music, will cross paths with Hindustani, Western classical, folk, Bengali Sangeet, and Rabindra Sangeet. Were just out there to pay tribute to wonderful forms of music all over the world, especially from India, and trying to search for light in each form, he adds. While Ramakrishnan wishes not only rasikas but all art lovers from the city to attend the event, Gurucharan looks for this event to continue. I hope this becomes a yearly feature in the Museum Theatre and features a number of artistes, he concludes. From Hollywood to Chennai: Prom comes to the city

In 10 Things I Hate About You , Kat Stratford walks into her senior prom donning an elegant strapless, sheath, purple dress despite her initial reluctance to attend. She stepped into a venue gleaming in shimmering lights, a live band performing, and that perfect happily-ever after moment where everything falls into place. Meanwhile, in Mean Girls , Cady Heron breaks her plastic tiara into pieces as a gesture of unity and rejection of class warfare; in High School Musical 3 , Troy and Gabriella sway at the night of nights prom. Prom has been immortalised as the grand finale of teenage years. Even horror found its way into prom lore with Carrie, blood-soaked and unforgettable, proving that no American coming-of-age story is ever complete without that one night of gowns, corsages, crowns, and chaos. But for Indians, especially in Chennai, these scenes existed only in English series and movies. Our school years end with farewell speeches, stiff photographs in auditoriums or grounds, and the occasional samosa and Fanta send-off. The closest thing to a coronation was the announcement of Best Outgoing Student, not Prom King and Queen. Prom, in all its pop culture glory, was an import we never really believed wed experience. Until now. This has already been the year of novel ideas Read: fake sangeets and weddings so it was only fitting that the city finally got its very own prom. A few West-inspired Chennaiites decided it was time to swap farewell speeches for slow dances, trade the tucked-in shirt and kurta dress code for corsages and tuxedos, and bring the dream sequence from the movies onto a local dance floor. West-side story Two weekends, two venues in Nungambakkam, and a whole lot of sequins later, Chennai can now claim to have hosted its first official prom. On August 22, Wrap Up Eventz, helmed by Syed Khan, transformed Secret Story, a restobar, into a formal prom set-up with drapes, disco lights, and a photo booth corner straight out of a Pinterest board. On September 6, a student-led community, En/D.Tainment, by Inti Muni Anish and Catherine Oviya, brought their version to Bhola & Blonde, another restobar, adding their own spin with a Cupid Pass for singles that doubled as a speed-dating ticket. For both the organisers, the decision to bring prom to Chennai was about chasing a long-standing fantasy. Weve all grown up watching these movies and imagining that kind of a night. I wanted to give young people here the chance to feel it for real, says Syed. Anish concurs, Growing up watching Hollywood, I have always wanted to experience the prom culture: ask a girl out for prom, dance with her, wear my best fit for the night. Since no schools here have the culture of prom, we dont have the privilege to experience that. It was a dream for all of us in our community, so we settled on this idea. The success of the Bhola & Blonde prom lay in months of meticulous planning for Anishs team. He talks about the learning curve, Dcor was a challenge because none of us were experts. We were learning as we went from Parrys Corner runs for golden tinsel to assembling disco balls ourselves. The thrill was in building something from scratch, imagining the prom we always wished wed had. On the contrary, Syed, given his experience in the field, was able to execute the prom within 20 days. He hosted a 21+ prom with alcohol. We had to keep everything legal and safe. Our confetti cannons went off all night, our bar was fully regulated, and the crowd got exactly what they came for a Hollywood-style prom in Chennai, he says. The event even featured a paparazzi entrance where attendees walked in with cameras flashing at them, recreating the red-carpet fantasy. For younger audiences, Anishs 18+ prom created a controlled atmosphere. We wanted to replicate the charm of prom movies, he says. But we also had something unique: the Cupids Pass. Singles could take part in a speed-dating game across six rounds, switching partners every five minutes. By the end, matches could form organically. For many, it wasnt just fun it led to connections that lasted past the night. The organising team picked eight girls and eight boys out of 300 registrations, after careful consideration through a questionnaire for the pass. Real reel moments Did the pop culture dream come true for the attendees? For some, the prom delivered exactly what theyd hoped for. Pranav SR, who also dreamed of attending a prom, stumbled upon the event on Instagram and signed up immediately. This was similar to the ones we all have seen in Hollywood while growing up, so this felt like living a dream. I even got paired up with a beautiful girl to get inside the venue. That never happened to me in real life, so I felt like I was in a movie, says the 19-year-old. The details dcor, DJ sets, couples twirling in slow motion were enough to seal the fantasy. But the bigger win was how inclusive the space felt. I noticed several people in different age groups and professions at the prom. It attracts people irrespective of their background, he says. For 21-year-old Pranav, the prom night managed to strike the perfect balance between familiar and fresh. The experience felt new and familiar at the same time. The concept of couples coming together is something great; however, the idea of matching singles with other singles through the Cupid Pass was new. The speed dating concept added a fun twist, he says. What stayed with him, though, was not the novelty but the mood of the night. When all my friends got together in a circle and were having a ball dancing, that was truly fun. And then seeing couples dance hand in hand to melancholic music it really created that romance-in-the-air vibe, he adds. Even with all the planning, organisers admit it was the spontaneous moments that made the nights memorable. Anish recalls, Seeing the couples dance to Careless Whisper was magical. Its surreal to watch a scene youve only seen on screen come alive in real life. Syed agrees, Watching everyone pose for the paparazzi, letting the confetti rain down, seeing people actually live their prom dreams that was priceless. The smiles, the laughter, the energy thats what we wanted. Nothing else mattered. Full steam ahead For some, the night was a reminder that reality doesnt always stick to the script. Ive seen so many movies that have the perfect prom scene, like 10 Things I Hate About You. All my favourite films have that one magical moment, so I wanted to experience it for myself, says M Harshini, 20. But her night turned out quieter than the movies promised. I was alone most of the night and felt lonelier than ever because everyone else had a date and they were all having fun, and dancing. I expected the opposite to happen but, oh well, she rues. Her bittersweet memory of watching her sister find romance on the dance floor while she sat back wasnt quite the Hollywood ending she hoped for. Yet, Harshini is glad these events now exist. A few decades back, no one even knew what prom was. Now, through social media and cultural exchange, we have our own prom in Chennai, which makes younger audiences socialise more and potentially find their person, she says. With 2025 proving that Chennai is ready to embrace a new social phenomenon, organisers are already sketching out bigger plans. Weve learned a lot this year about dcor, logistics, music, and community dynamics, Catherine says. Meanwhile, Syed is planning to host the next prom in January or February. The 2026 Prom would be in a larger venue, on a large scale, and will include the coronation moment. We want everyone to have a story theyll remember forever. Its about the experience, the memories, the fun. And the crowns are coming the Prom King and Queen of Chennai will finally have their moment on stage. Catherine concludes, Chennai Proms are not just about mimicking Hollywood. Theyre about creating a unique local culture, blending global dreams with local realities, and giving young people a night theyll never forget. This is only the beginning.

A wild, wild weekend: One of Indias first all-woman Hip-hop collectives, Wild Wild Woman, is set to perform in B'luru

Were gonna reach the top, so dont try to stop , Ready to flip the game, dont try to play with us , these lines, delivered with confidence while clad in a saree by all-woman Hip-hop collective Wild Wild Womens rapper JQueen (Jacquilin Lucas), have wormed their way into the ears of 15.5 million people on Instagram since 2024. Since then, for the group, which is set to perform at Maya Bazaar, Jayamahal Palace Grounds, this Sunday, the only way forward has been up. The team recently wrapped up its first tour abroad in Germany. We were going through a difficult phase and hadnt posted anything for three months. Initially, the song Game Flip didnt go viral, and one day, we woke up to many texting us for performances and interviews, recalls JQueen, while HashtagPreeti (Preeti N Sutar), who is from Karnataka, adds, We went from 6,000 to 60,000 followers in a week. It was a turning point for us. Much like the one that catapulted them to popularity, the group writes verses that are bold and true to their experience of navigating womanhood, from toppling the patriarchy to mental health. We take inspiration from everyday life and things that affect us as women. Its easier to discuss such issues in the form of songs and were trying to include the larger picture of women in the country, says Pratika (Pratika Prabhune). Despite the perception of them writing about feminist issues, Preeti resists the idea of being limited to one topic. We want to talk about everything from love, politics, the environment and the sisterhood that we have. We want to just go all out, she says. The members, all in their 20s and early 30s, faced hostility for being women in the Hip-hop world. Some didnt allow us to perform just because we were women. I was thrown out from my previous crew, where I was the only girl member, so Im grateful to have Wild Wild Women, confesses JQueen, noting that the scene isnt as much as of a boys club as it used to be. With the members also including Krantinaari (Ashwini Hiremath), MC Mahila (Shruti Raut), break-dancers FlowRaw (Deepa Singh) and MGK (Mugdha Mangaonkar), graffiti artist Gauri Dabholkar and skateboarder Shruti Bhosle hailing from different linguistic backgrounds, the Mumbai-based groups songs are an eclectic mix of languages. They rap in Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Marathi and English the key to cohesion being teamwork and feedback. Every language has its own way of expressing emotion. So writing in these languages is not the same as writing in English or Hindi each of our lines are not literally translated into every other language. Its just us bringing our own flavours to the table, we get a gist of what the person is trying to say and each one contributes to a larger picture. We do give each other feedback, because that helps us grow as individuals and brings together a more wholesome track overall, says Pratika. They have a unique look to complement this individual voice, trading in the typical western clothing of most Indian Hip-hop artistes for colour-coordinated sarees. Initially, we started out as a western-looking group, but Krantinaari suggested that we should be performing in sarees. We had our disagreements, but once we started wearing them, the response was crazy, explains Preeti, adding, We often end up picking sarees from our moms wardrobes. Its an emotional moment for me as it feels like breaking out of the barriers that my ancestors couldnt. Its safe to say that youll hear a lot more of their music in person than can be found online, with the band routinely performing unreleased songs and solo music alongside their released singles while touring and building a fanbase. For their hour-long performance in Bengaluru, they hint at a retro theme performance, as Pratika says with a smile, Youll just have to see for yourself.

What to expect at Meta Connect 2025: 'Hypernova' smart glasses, AI and the metaverse

Meta Connect, the company's annual event dedicated to all things AR, VR, AI and the metaverse is just days away. And once again, it seems like it will be a big year for smart glasses and AI. This year, the event will take a slightly different format than in the past. Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to kick things off with an evening keynote at 5PM PT on Wednesday, September 17. A developer keynote with other executives will take place the next morning on September 18, beginning at 10AM, with more talks and developer sessions to follow. It's not clear why Meta changed things up this year, but it is shaping up to be a particularly eventful year for Connect. We're expecting two new models of smart glasses, including Meta's first to have a display, as well as new Meta AI and metaverse updates. As usual, Engadget will be reporting live from Zuckerberg's keynote at Meta HQ, but until then, here's a closer look at what's coming and what to keep an eye on. New and updated smart glasses The biggest news of the day will be Meta's next-generation of smart glasses. The frames, often referred to by their reported internal name Hypernova , will be the first consumer-ready glasses from Meta that have a display. We already know quite a bit about these thanks to more than a year of leaks. While the frames are expected to have a small display on one side, they won't offer the kind of immersive augmented reality experience we've seen on Meta's Orion prototype . Instead the display will allow you to view things like notifications and photo previews. The glasses will also come with a dedicated wristband, similar to what the company showed off with Orion, that allows the wearer to control specific features through hand gestures. The EMG wristband that's part of the Orion prototype. Karissa Bell for Engadget The glasses, which may officially be called Celeste, are expected to go on sale later this year, will likely cost around $800. They could be sold with Prada branding, which would be in line with Meta's longtime EssilorLuxottica partnership, according to CNBC. Given the much higher price tag most of Meta's Ray-Ban-branded glasses cost around $300 it seems Meta is positioning this as a higher-end product that will have a more limited appeal. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested Hypernova will have a negligible share of the overall smart glasses market. It also sounds like we could see a new version of Meta's smart glasses without a display with an updated version of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. There could be two versions for sunglasses and clear frames, according to leaked renders . The new glasses are reported to have improved cameras and battery life, and support new AI capabilities. We could also see new third-party glasses integrations. As UploadVR recently pointed out, early versions of the Connect schedule for developers seemingly confirms that Meta is getting ready to give developers access to its smart glasses. Up to now, the Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley glasses have mostly been limited to apps within Meta's ecosystem (with a few exceptions like Spotify and Audible). Allowing more developers to start experimenting with the platform could bring even more functionality to the existing lineup of glasses. Meta AI As with other recent years, AI will be a major theme throughout. Meta AI has a billion monthly users (something Zuckerberg will surely remind us of) and I'm expecting to see new features for Meta AI both on the company's glasses and within its apps. Business Insider reports the company has been working on new lineup of non-English speaking character-driven bots for its apps. (Meta's character-centric chatbots have also faced scrutiny, with the company recently blocking teens' access to many user-generated characters amid growing safety concerns.) Outside of Meta's chatbots, I'm hoping Zuckerberg will talk more about his vision to create superintelligence. As I wrote in July, his initial manifesto that outlined his vision was confusing at best. The CEO has recently reorganized Meta's AI teams around the idea, and has been on a very expensive hiring spree to recruit executives and researchers for the effort. At the same time, Zuckerberg could use Connect to shore up expectations around its Llama models. The company's larger Llama 4 model has been delayed and reports suggest Meta's engineers have been struggling to improve it. There are other signs that Zuckerberg may be backing away from open-source AI. What about the metaverse? While the metaverse has taken somewhat of a backseat to AI in recent years, it wouldn't be Connect without some VR-related news. In a recent Instagram post, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth teased metaverse software updates related to Horizon Worlds at Connect. The company recently offered a preview to developers of its plan to bring AI-powered NPCs to the metaverse, and I expect we'll hear more about how generative AI could help shape the metaverse. And while there are no new Quest headsets expected, we could hear more about those third-party VR headsets that will run Meta's VR software. Last year, the company announced that ASUS, Lenovo and Xbox were working on Meta Horizon OS headsets. We haven't heard too much about these devices since, but there was a leak earlier this year that suggested ASUS would be the first to launch, and that it would include face and eye tracking features. NEW: Details on the upcoming ASUS ROG VR headset running Meta Horizon OS. It is codenamed Tarius, and will likely be one of the first 3P Horizon OS HMDs to ship. It is planned to include Eye Tracking and Face Tracking. The displays will be QD-LCD with local dimming or OLED. pic.twitter.com/K5pYxcBK4h Luna (@Lunayian) January 12, 2025 Another intriguing possibility is an update on Meta's holographic Codec avatars we got a glimpse of last year. While Meta's current lineup of VR headsets don't have the necessary face and eye-tracking sensors to support the tech, UploadVR suggests Meta could show off a more rudimentary version of the avatars that could run on the Quest 3 or even work in conjunction with video calls on WhatsApp and Messenger. Instagram fixed an issue that caused posting multiple Stories to tank your reach

Instagram fixed a bug that caused the reach of some users' Stories to shrink when they posted more than one Story a day, Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared on Friday . The fix addresses a common complaint shared by creators in the last year that they were disincentivized to use Stories because of how regularly using the feature impacted the number of people who actually saw their posts. People were complaining about getting less reach with their Stories if they posted lots of Stories in the same day, Mosseri said in a video announcing the change. That is not at all the intended behavior of Instagram. Fixing the bug doesn't mean every Story you add will be watched, but Mosseri says posting multiple Stories a day won't negatively impact the reach of your Stories overall, especially your first Story. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Adam Mosseri (@mosseri) For anyone who primarily uses Instagram to keep up with their friends, the change might not matter all that much. But much like YouTube, Instagram is an increasingly professionalized platform where people post in the hopes of expanding their reach and earning a living off their content. That creates an interesting dynamic between Mosseri's regular announcements and users trying to suss out the nuances of the platform's algorithm. For every new feature, like adding of comments to Stories , there's subtler tweaks that can totally change creators' content strategy. The iPhone 17 square selfie camera is a bigger deal than you think

A square camera sensor may sound like one of those things only nerds would appreciate, but as part of the new front-facing 18-megapixel Center Stage camera on the iPhone 17 lineup, it could have massive implications for Apple's users. They'll no longer need to turn their phones to take a landscape selfie, especially if they need to fit a large group of people, as that's all handled automatically by Center Stage. It's the sort of Why didn't I think of that? feature that other phone makers will likely copy, simply because it's immensely practical. Those square camera sensors could help make Apple a selfie pioneer, once again. We've come a long way from when the iPhone 4 and HTC Evo 4G introduced the idea of modern front-facing cameras in 2010. Earlier cellphones in Japan and Europe had low quality selfie cameras, and you could argue that the Game Boy Camera also toyed with the idea when it arrived in 1998. But in 2010, we finally had powerful phones on relatively speedy mobile connections that could easily share photos and let users hop on video chats on a whim. (It still stings that it took Apple two more years to release the LTE-capable iPhone 5, which made FaceTime much more useful.) iPhone Air selfie camera Sam Rutherford for Engadget During the iPhone 17 launch event, Apple revealed that its customers took 500 billion selfies last year, a massive figure that shows just how normalized the practice has become. Selfies were often mocked when they were deemed the purview of Instagram-obsessed teenage girls, but these days it's not unusual to see everyone from seniors to a gaggle of sports bros gathering around a single phone like an object of worship. And, on a personal note, they're really the only way to get decent photos of your entire family, especially when you're juggling two rambunctious young kids. We take photos to preserve memories, but selfies feel distinctive for their intimacy. You're not just capturing where you were, but you're also documenting yourself in the moment, along with the people around you. By making it easier to take selfies, it follows that you'll start to take even more of them, ultimately tying yourself into Apple's ecosystem even further. That leads to needing an iPhone with more storage and potentially more iCloud backup space down the line. You're also not going to jump over to an Android phone if you have to turn your phone sideways for a landscape selfie, or if you lose access to all of the cherished memories in your Apple Photos library. The square camera sensor keeps you loyal. It'll also change the way iPhone users take front-facing videos. Center Stage automatically keeps you in the center of FaceTime calls, so you don't have to worry so much about framing yourself up. And while I haven't seen this particular feature in action, it should also help alleviate the headache of turning your phone during a FaceTime call to match the recipient's device. (Or maybe I'm just tired of telling my parents to flip their phones when their FaceTime chats have huge black borders.) This may be a stretch, but I could see the Center Stage front camera making it more common to record video with your front and rear cameras at the same time. While its new to iPhone as Dual Capture, weve seen variants of it from Samsung and Nokia (remember #bothie?) Android devices, but theyve never really taken off. TikToks dual-camera live streaming mode has been more successful, and there are also vlogging apps like MixCam built around dual recording. With Dual Capture on iPhone 17, Center Stages ability to keep you in the middle of the action with the front camera should let you focus more on getting the best shot with the rear lenses. While Id love to see Apple cram more pixels into the 18MP Center Stage camera, moving to a square sensor will honestly be more impactful for all of the reasons above. Its easy to throw in a higher resolution sensor, its tougher to fundamentally rethink how you can improve upon something as simple as taking a selfie. Uttar Pradesh woman on Pashupatinath pilgrimage in Nepal dies in arson

LUCKNOW: Nepals ongoing unrest turned a Ghaziabad familys pilgrimage to the Pashupatinath temple into tragedy after rioters set fire to a luxury hotel in Kathmandu where they were staying, leaving a woman dead. Dozens of Indian tourists are stranded in the violence-hit country. Ramveer Singh Gola, 58, never knew that a spiritual sojourn with his wife Rajesh Gola would become her journey to the heavenly abode. He travelled to Kathmandu to visit the Pashupatinath temple on September 7. On September 8, violent protests broke out in the Himalayan state demanding transparency in governance and lifting of the ban on social media platforms. The deadly night of September 9 proved to be the nemesis of the Golas as their five-star hotel was set ablaze during the violent protests. Demonstrators tried to storm parliament and torched various government and private establishments as the agitation turned violent. According to relatives, Ramveer Gola and his wife were staying on the upper floor of the hotel when protesters set the lower floors on fire. In panic, Ramveer attempted to rescue his wife to safety using a curtain, but she slipped from his grasp and fell, sustaining severe injuries. She was rushed to the hospital but succumbed on the way due to excessive bleeding and injuries. On Friday morning at 10:30 am, family members brought her body to their residence in Master Colony, Ghaziabad. As per family sources, the violent mob stormed the hotel and set it on fire. As the stairways filled with smoke, Ramveer broke the windowpane, tied sheets, and jumped onto a mattress, while Rajesh Gola slipped while trying to climb down and fell heavily on her back. According to the account of Vishal, the elder son of the Golas, communication blackouts hampered their search. For two days, we didnt know about their whereabouts. Finally, my father was found in a relief camp, but my mother died in the hospital, he said while talking to media persons. The son also alleged that he received minimal support from the Indian embassy. Meanwhile, several groups of UP pilgrims remain stranded in Nepal as violent protests continue to disrupt normal life in the Himalayan nation. The India-Nepal border in Maharajganj witnessed a surge of returning tourists as many cut short their trips amid escalating unrest. A group of 10 pilgrims from Muzaffarnagar, in western UP, who had travelled to visit the Pashupatinath temple, have been confined to their hotel for the past three days. The group includes local BJP leader Sunil Kumar Tayal, who has sought assistance from state minister Kapil Dev Aggarwal. Similarly, nine pilgrims from Ayodhya, who set out on the Mansarovar pilgrimage, are stranded in Hilsa at the Nepal-China border. Most of them were preparing to return, but the arson and unrest in Nepal closed the routes. However, according to available information, all the pilgrims are safe and in contact with their families. Ayodhya DM Nikhil Tikaram Funde told media persons that he was observing the situation and was trying to ensure the safe exit of the pilgrims. Nine individuals departed from Ayodhya on September 1 to visit Kailash Mansarovar. On their return journey, they got stuck in Nepal after passing through China. Although their families claim to be in contact with them, efforts are underway to bring them back safely by coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Nepal, said the DM. Those stranded in Nepal include Sushil Rajpal, Chaman Singh, Madan Jaiswal, Vikas Gupta, Ramakant Yadav, Shailendra Agrahari, Anoop Kumar Singh, Prakash Srivastava, and Hari Shyam Tripathi.

The FTC is investigating companies that make AI companion chatbots

The Federal Trade Commission is making a formal inquiry into companies that provide AI chatbots that can act as companions. The investigation isn't tied to any kind of regulatory action as of yet, but does aim to reveal how companies measure, test, and monitor potentially negative impacts of this technology on children and teens. Seven companies are being asked to participate in the FTC's investigation: Google's parent company Alphabet, Character Technologies (the creator of Character.AI), Meta, its subsidiary Instagram, OpenAI, Snap and X.AI. The FTC is asking companies to provide a variety of different information, including how they develop and approve AI characters and monetize user engagement. Data practices and how companies protect underage users are also areas the FTC hopes to learn more about, in part to see if chatbot makers comply with the Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act Rule. The FTC doesn't provide clear motivation for its investigation, but in a separate statement , FTC Commissioner Mark Meador suggests the Commission is responding to recent reports from The New York Times and Wall Street Journal of chatbots amplifying suicidal ideation and engaging in sexually-themed discussions with underage users. If the facts as developed through subsequent and appropriately targeted law enforcement inquiries, if warranted indicate that the law has been violated, the Commission should not hesitate to act to protect the most vulnerable among us, Meador writes. As the long-term productivity benefits of using AI become less and less certain , the more immediate negative privacy and health impacts have become red meat for regulators. Texas' Attorney General has already launched a separate investigation into Character. AI and Meta AI Studio over similar concerns of data privacy and chatbots claiming to be mental health professionals. iOS 26: What to know about the free iPhone software update arriving September 15

The iPhone 17 event last Tuesday revealed the latest Phone 17 lineup including the ultra-thin iPhone Air . (You can catch up on everything Apple announced or rewatch the full iPhone 17 launch .) The company rounded out its announcements with three new Apple Watch models, as well as the all-new AirPods Pro 3. The even better news is that many of us sticking with older iPhones will finally be able to install iOS 26 in just a few days: It arrives Monday, September 15, alongside all of Apple's other new operating systems . But you don't have to wait to test out the new features, since you can download and install the newly released iOS 26 RC (release candidate) if you've been using the public or developer betas. (See our preview of the iOS 26 public beta release for more info.) The first thing you'll notice is a new clear design language Apple dubs Liquid Glass . The translucent look can be found within apps as well as your lock and home screens. The overhaul is one of several big changes coming to iOS, macOS , iPadOS , watchOS and the rest of Apple's software suite. After overpromising on AI plans last year, Apple kept its iOS roadmap focused more on basic quality of life improvements with iOS 26. There are multiple useful additions coming to the Phone and Messages apps, for instance: Apple execs outlined the ability to weed out spam texts or unknown senders and an option to hold your spot on a phone call when you've been waiting for a representative to pick up. It seems like additional new improvements are popping up (or at least hinted at) with each beta, such as an AirPods live translation feature , which Apple talked about during the event. We also noticed a new bouncy animation on the passcode screen and in the Control Center. Most newer iPhone models are eligible to download iOS 26 (both the betas and final version). We've rounded up a full list of new features coming this fall below. What is iOS 26? The current iPhone operating system is iOS 18, which Apple is still actively updating version 18.6.1 was released last month, for example, to restore Apple Watch blood oxygen monitoring functionality for certain users in the US. More recently, Apple released iOS 18.6.2 to address a vulnerability related to image processing. But don't expect to ever see an iOS 19. Instead, Apple is skipping its naming convention ahead to iOS 26. (Apple is also expected to release iOS 18.7 at the same time, per MacRumors , to address security issues.) The company has decided to line up its iOS version numbers with a year-based system, similar to car model years. So while iOS and its sibling operating systems will be released in late 2025, they're all designated 26 to reflect the year ahead. It's official, we're moving to iOS 26. (Apple) What is Liquid Glass design? Let's be honest. Out of everything announced at WWDC this year, the new Liquid Glass design was the star of the show. The iPhone's home and lock screens have looked pretty much the same year after year the last exciting thing (in my opinion) was the option to add your own aesthetic to your home screen by customizing your apps and widgets. So seeing the home and lock screens' new facelift is refreshing. So what exactly is Liquid Glass? Apple calls it a new translucent material since, well, the apps and widgets are clear. However, the screen can still adapt to dark and light modes, depending on surroundings. You'll also notice buttons with a new floating design in several apps, like Phone and Maps. They're designed to be less distracting than the current buttons, but are still easy to see. While the design overhaul has proven to be controversial since its announcement, some including Engadget's Devindra Hardawar like the new direction, even if it's somewhat reminiscent of Microsoft's translucent Windows Vista Aero designs from nearly twenty years ago. That said, as of the release of the iOS 26 beta 2, Apple has already incorporated some user feedback into the design, dialing back the transparency in at least some places. And while it will continue to evolve, Apple users won't be able to escape it: The company says Liquid Glass was designed to make all of its platforms more cohesive. Here's a look at how the translucent aesthetic will look with the new macOS Tahoe 26 on your desktop. What are the new and notable features of iOS 26? iOS 26 has a laundry list of new features. Among the most worthwhile: Phone app redesign: You'll finally be able to scroll through contacts, recent calls and voicemail messages all on one screen. It also comes with a new feature called Hold Assist that'll notify you when an agent comes to the phone so you can avoid the elevator music and continue on with other tasks. Live Translation in Phone, FaceTime and Messages: iOS 26 is bringing the ability to have a conversation via phone call or text message with someone who speaks another language. Live Translation will translate your conversation in real time, which results in some stop-and-go interactions in the examples Apple shared during its presentation. Polls in group chats: Tired of sorting through what seems like hundreds of messages in your group chat? You and your friends will soon be able to create polls in group messages for deciding things like which brunch spot you're eating at or whose car you're taking on a road trip. Filtering unknown senders in Messages: If you haven't received spam texts about unpaid tolls or other citations, you're lucky. For those of us who have, those annoying messages will soon be filtered away in a separate folder. Visual Intelligence: Similar to a reverse Google image search, this new feature will allow you to search for anything that's on your iPhone screen. For instance, if you spot a pair of shoes someone is wearing in an Instagram photo, you can screenshot it and use Visual Intelligence to find those shoes (or similar ones) online. Photos tabs are back: For anyone who's been frustrated with last year's changes to the Photos app , you'll be happy to know that your tabs are coming back. Library and Collections will have their own separate spaces so you don't have to scroll to infinity to find what you're looking for. Camera app updates : Navigating the Camera app should be simpler in iOS 26, as all the buttons and menus are in convenient spots less swiping, more photo taking. Plus, there's a new feature that tells you if your lens needs to be cleaned. FaceTime Communication Safety feature: A newer addition to iOS 26 appears to be the FaceTime Communication Safety feature that pauses communications if and when nudity is detected. The feature appears to be a child safety feature that uses on-device detection, thus obviating any cloud-based privacy issues. New lock screen options : The iPhone lock screen gets more customizable in iOS 26, with a cooler clock, 3D wallpaper effects, more widgets and better focus mode options. New alarm setting : You'll no longer be stuck with the 9-minute snooze setting in your alarms. Instead, you'll have the option to change your snooze time from one to 15 minutes. Screenshots look different : You'll notice several new features when you take a screenshot, including highlight to search, the option to search your image on Google and ChatGPT is there for any questions you have about the image. Apple's Hold Assist will be nifty for those pesky services that put you on hold for 10 or more minutes. (Apple) New changes coming to iPadOS 26 Your iPad isn't getting left behind when it comes to big updates. Here's what's coming this fall. Multitasking and real windowing: When you download the newest update, you'll be able to have multiple apps running on your screen at the same time. Once you open an app, it'll appear on your screen as normal but you'll be able to resize and move it across your screen to make room for other apps. This feature is optional so you can turn it off if you don't like it. Visual update: Along with the other new OSes, iPadOS 26 is coming with the Liquid Glass aesthetic. This new look will appear on the lock and home screens, as well as the drop-down menus. New menu bar: When you swipe down on your screen, the new menu bar will appear with options like File, Edit, Windows and more. There's also a search option if you're looking for something specific. There's more beyond that, so be sure to check out our first impressions of iPadOS 26 . What about AirPods? AirPods are also getting updated with iOS 26. Here are some of the more notable functions. Enhanced audio recording: Apple calls this studio-quality audio recording, and with it, you'll notice more clarity while in noisy environments. Camera remote control: Using this, you can take a photo or start and stop video recording with just one press on your AirPods. When taking photos, you'll get a three-second countdown before your iPhone or iPad snaps the picture. Live translation feature: The Apple event confirmed that live translation is coming to AirPods Pro 3 , AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC when paired with iPhones running iOS 26. Heart rate monitoring: Apple introduced new AirPods Pro 3 earbuds this week, which include heart rate monitoring. It would work with Apple's Health app and other fitness apps that track heart rates. Will Siri get an update? Siri is in a holding pattern. Apple has previously specified that its smarter voice assistant first promised at WWDC 2024 is delayed until some point in the coming year , so you shouldn't expect any major changes in the current betas. But there are reports that Apple is aiming to give Siri a bigger brain transplant by basing it on third-party artificial intelligence models like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude, which could make 2026 a pivotal year. The company is also reportedly working on a stripped-down AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT. Which iPhones will be able to upgrade to iOS 26? A few iPhone models that run the current version of iOS iPhone XR, XS and XS Max won't be compatible with the latest upgrade. But any iPhones from 2019 or later will be eligible for iOS 26 : iPhone SE (second generation or later) iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro iPhone 11 Pro Max iPhone 12 iPhone 12 mini iPhone 12 Pro iPhone 12 Pro Max iPhone 13 iPhone 13 mini iPhone 13 Pro iPhone 13 Pro Max iPhone 14 iPhone 14 Plus iPhone 14 Pro iPhone 14 Pro Max iPhone 15 iPhone 15 Plus iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPhone 17 iPhone Air iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 17 Pro Max How to install iOS 26 beta The iOS 26 public beta is available to download via the Apple Beta Software Program . If you're not already a member, you'll need to sign up to try out all the latest features. Just visit beta.apple.com and sign up with your phone number or email address. It's free. Once you're in, you can install it by going to Settings > General > Software Update and selecting iOS 26 public beta . A word of caution: Don't sign up with your main iPhone unless you're OK with any risks that occur with using an OS that isn't finalized. When will the final version of iOS 26 be released? iOS 26 will be released to the public for free on September 15, which is less than a week away. Desperate bid to curry favour with RSS leadership: Congress on PM's praise for Bhagwat

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his article on Mohan Bhagwat, saying the over-the-top tribute to the RSS chief on his 75th birthday was a desperate bid to curry favour with the Sangh leadership. Praising Bhagwat for his intellectual depth and empathetic leadership, Prime Minister Modi has said that his tenure as the head of the RSS since 2009 will be considered the most transformative period in its 100-year journey. In a glowing piece that appeared in several newspapers on Thursday on Bhagwat's 75th birthday, Modi said he is a living example of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and has dedicated his entire life to societal transformation and strengthening the spirit of harmony and fraternity. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh said, The Prime Minister, in his desperate bid to curry favour with the RSS leadership, has written an over-the-top tribute to Mohan Bhagwat on his 75th birthday today. The PM has recalled that it was on September 11, 1893, that Swami Vivekananda gave his immortal speech in Chicago. The PM has also recalled that the Al Qaeda terrorist attacks in the US took place on Sept 11, 2001, Ramesh said. Swami & his new brothersand sisters

Year 1893. September 11. The Permanent Memorial Art Palace, now the Art Institute of Chicago, was packed for the World Parliament of Religions. Among the speakers sat a 30-year-old monk, his eyes searching for something beyond the apparent. Though scheduled among the first, nervousness made him request a later slot. It was his first time facing such a massive crowd, gathered to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovery of America. The Parliament, held as part of the Columbian Exposition, aimed to foster harmony among nations and highlight the essence of all religions. Yet, most speakers were intent on asserting the superiority of their own faith rather than affirming all as pathways to truth. When the monks turn finally came, the audience was weary of hearing praises of Shintoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Theism, Mohammedanism, Confucianism and more. Rising to speak extempore, he began with: Sisters and Brothers of America. The hall erupted in a standing ovation, the 4,000-strong audience moved by his sincerity. They listened intently as he spoke of India and its spiritual heritage, which binds creation in a sweet bond of love. It was as though the Swamis words tugged at their hearts, as it bore a camaraderie shared between beings who share earth. He spoke heart to heart rather than academic, says R Lakshmi, professor and head of philosophy, University of Kerala, who has researched the spiritual seeker and reformer in Vivekananda. What followed is history. The young monk became world-renowned as Swami Vivekananda, whose words inspired generations of youth to discover their potential. His influence spanned spiritual leaders like Sri Aurobindo Ghosh and Sree Narayana Guru, reformers and freedom fighters like Rabindranath Tagore, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Subash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh, industrialists like Jamsetji Tata who established the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore on Vivekanandas suggestion and even scientists such as Nikola Tesla, with whom he discussed links between science and spirituality. Even with Robert Ingersoll, the famed American agnostic, he had deep interactions, notes Lakshmi. Vivekananda once told Ingersoll: If I had only to learn how an apple falls to the ground, or how an electric current shakes my nerves, I would commit suicide. I want to understand the heart of things, the very kernel itself. Your study is the manifestation of life, mine is life itself. Lakshmi adds that such a scientific approach to life still appeals to the youth, even 123 years after his passing at the age of 39. When you trace events in India and in Kerala, you will find Vivekanandas influence at the core of every movement that shaped Indiabe it the freedom struggle, scientific development, the Vaikom Satyagraha, or even womens emancipation that we see now, she says. His quotes such as Life is the unfoldment and development of a being under circumstances tending to press it down and Life is without borders continue to resonate widely. Vivekanandas hope was always in the youth, Lakshmi says, pointing to his stirring words: Give me 100 energetic young men and I shall transform India. Durga Krishna, a Class 12 student preparing for JEE, finds Vivekananda motivational. I have his quote on my study board Arise, awake, stop not till the goal is reached. I think he was cool, and quite Gen-Zish in his attitude. Whenever I need a pep-up, I scroll for Vivekananda on Insta or look up the net for his quotes, says the teenager, who has been reading The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. Asked if she delves deeply into their meaning, she replies: I will, probably after my exams. Concurring with Lakshmi, Anujit Sajeev, a 24-year-old research scholar, highlights that hardly a day passes by without coming across a social media poster or reel with Vivekanandas saying. However, the depth of perception is debatable. The youth now is in a state of flow, he adds. Some things must be imbibed so that it will define our life. Like how we tackle fears and struggles. Nowadays, people fall back on Vivekananda or any gurus wisdom only during duress. Once that phase passes, the lessons too are left behind. Rather, the path and process undertaken should define our attitude to life. Mountaineer Sreesha Raveendran, the second Malayali woman to scale Mt Everest, agrees. She observes that todays idea of self-love differs from Vivekanandas. Glancing at Vivekanandas works by her table, she reflects: Self-love, what the Swami meant, was about growing to ones true potential and the empathy that helps us connect with the world better. But the youth understand it as momentary care for the self. However, she adds that even superficial exposure does have value. It is like a seed sown. In the ascent of life, taking risks is important, and it is not always about summiting but about the process and the one-pointed focus in anything you do. Sreesha refers to two Vivekanandas quotes that mean a lot to her: Means to attain the goal are as important as the goal itself, and Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Commander Abhilash Tomy (retd), the first Indian to sail solo around the world, recalls a personal connection. I read Vivekananda first in 2001, a book that I found in the Naval Library in Kochi. It was on Advaita Vedanta, i.e. non-dualism. It influenced me profoundly, he says. Even while on voyages, there were several times when I felt one with whatever I was doing, whatever I see, whatever I am, where I am. I also saw a dream once where I was feeding a hungry dog and felt the animal, what I fed it, and me all are one and the same. This made me feel there is no achievement or feat. The destination takes a backseat to the process once we feel totally surrendered to what we do. Whether we achieve or not, we get enriched by the process alone. And at that point, nature, you, what we do, and the energy that prompts us to do all merge into a beautiful whole. Vivekananda is the one who opened that world to me. January 12, 1863: Born Narendranath Dutta in Calcutta November 1881: First meeting with Sri Ramakrishna, his spiritual guru January 1887: Takes monastic vows and becomes Swami Vivekananda. November-December 1892: Travels across Kerala, calls it a lunatic asylum due to its caste-related practises, inspires youth to fight caste barriers December 24, 1892: Reaches Kanyakumari, meditates on a sea rock (now Vivekananda Rock Memorial) for three days on Indias future February 1893: Embarks on a journey across India to inspire youth towards freedom and fearlessness September 11, 1893: Addresses the Parliament of Religions in Chicago May 1894: Speaks at Harvard University, calls for the need to blend Western and Eastern thoughts May 1897: Launches Sri Ramakrishna Mission, now an organisation rendering humanitarian service worldwide July 1992: Passes away at the age of 39

The tall shadows that fall on digital playgrounds

It is perhaps easy for the casual observer to dismiss the recent scrutiny of the popular gaming platform,Roblox, by several countries in West Asia as yet another inevitable clash between largely conservative regulators and global tech. But doing so would mean being unmindful of the unease simmering beneath tapered headlines unaccommodative of the larger context. That is, what happens when childrens play spaces are built, run, and occupied by strangers online? Readers may recall that India, too, has had its own dance with digital bans in the recent past. In 2020, the Union government pulled the plug on PUBG Mobile, a popular mobile game at the time. The move was instigated in part by data concerns linked to the games Chinese publisher, Tencent, amid escalating tensions on the Indo-Chinese border. Giving it also moral ballast was a growing public outcry over teenagers becoming increasingly glued to their screens, some skipping school and even falling sick after marathon sessions on the game. Another game, Garena Free Fire, too met a similar fate for largely the same reasons two years later. But thisRobloxscenario is unlike these episodes. This time, the anxiety is not about or limited to data concerns or addiction. It also encompasses child safety. But before we delve any further, its prudent to unpack exactly whatRobloxis and why it differs from traditional gaming platforms. Readers who are already clued in may skip the box below. Well, it is not a game in the traditional sense. It is a platform hosting millions of user-generated games. In it, you will find blocky obstacle courses, elaborate fantasy towns, and even digital concerts. For children, it is equal parts toy box, playground, and social club. So, what isRoblox? For all its perceived boons, the game has one fatal flaw. Given how it is set up,Robloxs playgrounds (experiences, as the developers would like to call them) are also hunting grounds for predators. These stories travelled fast and confirmed suspicions that a platform built for children was also a corridor to exploitation. So this recent crackdown ofRobloxin West Asia may not be groundless. Indeed, if you factor in even more context, the move makes a lot of sense. You see, in the larger Gulf, blistering heat, car-centric cities, and conservative norms means children spend more time indoors. Thus, screens become their playground, says Neena Emil, a corporate trainer working in Bahrain. 1) In the US, lawsuits have accusedRobloxof failing to prevent grooming. In one case, a 10-year-old girl was allegedly lured with offers of free Robux, the platforms in-game currency, in exchange for explicit photos. 2) Another case involved an abduction that began, officials say, with an in-game chat. Roblox in the news: Perhaps taking cognisance of this, the governments here which already boasts the political will and regulatory muscle, and are used to acting decisively simply pulled the plug. Qatar and Kuwait bannedRobloxoutright, and Saudi Arabia, the UAE and more recently, Bahrain, forced chat restrictions for the game. Parents in India are watching these developments closely. Ammu Charles, for instance, blockedRobloxon YouTube Kids even before the platform started to make headlines for the wrong reasons. My kids were hooked on theRobloxslang in these videos, and used to mimic everything. But the language is inappropriate for kids. So, I blocked it, she says. For Sarika Jeevan, another parent,Robloxwas less about slang and more about obsession. My son only got on because his friends were spread all over the city, and this platform was how they bonded. At first it seemed harmless; grow garden had him planting crops and selling produce. But soon, the game overshadowed everything, she says. A server upgrade mattered more than watching the sunset on a holiday. Feeding virtual pets took precedence over our real ones. The only way I could cope was by turning his account into a child account and using safety apps to set limits, Sarika adds. Teachers are seeing the fallout too. Sajitha Binu Benjamin, a parentteacher, observes the same. She says, Kids often get addicted, losing all sense of space and time, and become aggressive when asked to stop playing. In many homes, where both parents are working, devices are given to stay connected with children. Without proper parental control, kids end up playing endlessly, she adds. Neena recounts an incident that happened with her son. One day I found him chatting with a much older girl. I monitor their interactions, but I know not every parent can. The risks are high if kids are not watched closely, she says. Shailaja Menon, another teacher, however, is not quick to dismiss games altogether. In fact, she sees them as vehicles that spark creativity. But often, she explains, they drift into violence or horror. So, maybe a ban on negative games makes sense, and like tobacco warnings, a timer nudging kids to log off would help. India has not reached the point of banningRoblox. But the ingredients are here: a booming smartphone market, cheap data, and minimal oversight. Parents often scrutinise WhatsApp groups and Instagram feeds, and social discussions about gaming addiction are common. But the idea of games as nefarious platforms, where grooming or trafficking would occur, remains understudied. With a median age of 28, Indias population skews young and over 440 million of them play games online, making the country one of the top markets for any developer. In the case ofRoblox, while it is difficult to pin down the exact number of players it has from India, the country registered a significant 58 per cent year-over-year increase in daily active users in the first quarter of last year. The platform already boasts 35.6 million daily active users in the second quarter of 2025, with India contributing greatly to this growth. The India story. Experts warn the gaps are real. Radha Radhakrishnan, former vice president (marketing and communications) of Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship, says, India is home to over 500 million gamers, but child-safety rules are patchy at best. Weak age checks and no parental consent mean kids face real risks from predators and manipulative design. Regulators need to toughen up, Radha says, but points out that platforms, too, have a duty. Educate families, provide real parental controls, and verify before you amplify, she adds. PR guru and digital maven Dilip Cherian adds a sharper note of caution. I doubtRobloxs US leadership loses sleep over Indian anxieties. Yet here, low parental literacy, gender inequalities, and regulators tendency for sudden bans make the stakes different, he highlights. West Asias temporary bans show the direction things are heading, Dilip points out, adding, Indias fast-growing user base will eventually face the same scrutiny. Global platforms rarely adapt their practices for local realities, but without that, child safety here remains compromised. But the argument stretches beyondRoblox, doesnt it? Children use Discord to game and do homework, drift through Reddit threads for fandoms and advice. What they are truly seeking in all this digital maze is, above all else, companionship. Communities where they can carve out identity and make sense of the world. 1. Parents can open conversations rather than just impose controls. Trust makes it easier for children to report when something feels off, says Neena. 2. Teachers can integrate digital literacy into classrooms, teaching how to spot scams or manipulative behaviour. 3. Developers, however, have the most work. They have to build safer defaults, robust age verification in their games, and more transparency in moderation. So, what can be done? There is no one template to follow in this scenario. Not for teachers, parents or developers. Each must do their part, in their respective domains. Because whether itsRoblox, Discord, or the next platform still to arrive, the reality is clear: for todays children, the playground is already online. The task is to ensure it remains a place of creativity and friendship, not exploitation. And that falls on all of us.

Jail warder held for smuggling drugs into Bengaluru prison

BENGALURU: Despite the Supreme Court recently slamming jail authorities for giving preferential treatment to inmates in the actor Darshan case, and despite several initiatives by the Prison Department to curb illegal activities, a jail warder at Bengaluru Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara has been arrested for smuggling drugs into the facility. The accused, Kalappa H Abachi, was caught with 100 grams of hashish oil worth Rs 1 lakh. He is alleged to have been supplying drugs to inmates. Abachi, an ex-serviceman, had taken voluntary retirement from the Indian Army and joined the Prison Department under the ex-servicemen quota in 2018. He had earlier served as a warder at Dharwad Prison and was transferred to Bengaluru Central Prison three months ago. According to Parappana Agrahara police, on Sunday night, Kalappa was on duty at the prison. During a security check at Checkpoint 2, officials found 100 grams of hashish oil wrapped in a plastic cover along with chewing tobacco products in his trousers. The contraband was seized, and a case was registered under the NDPS Act and Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons Act. He was arrested on Monday after a complaint was filed. Police said Kalappa is being questioned to determine for whom he was smuggling the drugs. Following his arrest, he has been suspended from service, prison sources said.

Chronicle of a storyteller: 11-year-old grandsons efforts to hold memories go viral

KOTTAYAM: An elderly woman struggling with dementia. Her 11-year-old grandson determined to help her fight the effects of the neurological condition. Their special bond has captured the hearts of many on social media. Marykutty Joseph was always an overarching influence on John Justin. From a very young age, John grew up listening to the countless fairy tales, folk and family lore she shared at her ancestral house in Veliyanadu, in the heart of Kuttanad. As Marykutty turned an octogenarian, she began her struggles with memory. John found a way to keep their bond alive through storytelling. He created a special scrapbook, Marykuttiyude Orma Pusthakam (Marykuttys Memory Book), that chronicles her life. It tells the story of her life, from her childhood in a farming family to her marriage and motherhood, and includes the part when John first made his presence felt. John says that though his grandmothers condition is challenging, she can still enjoy the book. In her stories, there were rivers, boats and fishing nets. The 100-page book is filled with her favourite places, things, people, and foods. It was our Onam gift to ammachi, he says. Marykutty reading the book about her penned by grandson John Justin For John, the book has become a bridge to keep conversations alive with his grandmother. I am happy that I can now read to her the same stories she once told me. Most importantly, she understands what I am saying, says the sixth grader of Nedumkunnam SJB CBSE School. The idea came from Johns aunt, a geriatric care professional in the United Kingdom. On her suggestion, he selected 100 key moments from his grandmothers life and paired them with photographs, some restored and enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI) and illustrations created with the same technology. John is also active on social media. With help from his cousin in the UK, he runs a page called Dream Y on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, where his grandmother often features in his videos. A recent video on the scrapbook went viral, winning appreciation from viewers, especially the elderly. Many shared that it reminded them of their own parents battling dementia, with some saying the content even moved them to tears. His parents, too, are glad that John and his grandmother continue to share the things they always enjoyed together, like eating side by side, cosy conversations and storytelling. It puts the illness in a safe context for both. The book even includes clever little scenes in which grandmas illness is gently played down. Moreover, we receive calls from several persons appreciating his efforts, says Justin, Johns father.

Bengalureans weigh in as Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra courts controversy

Bengaluru, once celebrated in cinema for its gardens, heritage and position as a crossroads of cultures, is finding itself cast in a markedly different light. The city, long associated with technology and opportunity, is increasingly being represented as a drug capital. The latest Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra , that has reportedly crossed 202 crore at the box office (as of Wednesday), drawing large audiences, extends this trend, joining titles such as Bheema , Officer on Duty and Aavesham in foregrounding narratives of crime, narcotics and moral decline. Controversy also surrounded specific dialogues in the film which used derogatory language towards Bengaluru women and a scene where a police officer shamed a female character who was being followed by goons while outside at night. The shift in cinematic portrayal recently prompted a response from National Award-winning Kannada filmmaker Mansore, who remarked on X: According to movies like Kannada Bhima , Malayalam films Officer on Duty , Aavesham , and now Lokah , Bengaluru is being portrayed as the capital of drugs and crime. Once upon a time, it was represented in movies as a beautiful town. It has come to such a state due to uncontrolled migration (sic) His observation has sparked a discussion about whether filmmakers are engaging with researched realities or resorting to convenient stereotypes for dramatic effect. While Bengalureans argue that cinema reflects uncomfortable truths about urban life, others caution that repeated depictions risk reducing complex identities to reductive images, amplifying stigma and overshadowing the citys diversity. Acknowledging the fallout Sandy Master portrays Nachiyappa Gowda, a police officer The makers of Lokah tendered an apology after facing backlash. Kannada activist Rupesh Rajanna was a vocal critic, demanding not only a public apology but also edits to the film. The issue even drew the attention of Bengaluru police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, who stated that the Central Crime Branchs social media monitoring cell would review the matter and take necessary action if violations were found. Dulquer Salmans Wayfarer Films, which produced the movie, released a statement expressing regret and assuring audiences that the dialogue would be removed or edited. Be careful with broad statements Anand Mahadevan, developer The misogyny of the character is made clear in a lot of dialogues including when he asks another character: Arent you ashamed of getting beaten up by a girl? There are people like him in society, and art is often a reflection of real life. Portraying it as closely as possible may be the only way to revolt, for the artiste. But yes, people clearly get influenced by movies, even if some dialogues are not glorified, they can be interpreted differently. All it needs is a reel with a mass BGM. Narratives can flip, influence can spread in unimaginable ways. It was a noble thing to apologise, because often impact is more important than the intent. We could logically argue that its a movie and we shouldnt take it personally, but that logic might not work in this day and age when we are bombarded by content everywhere and might not have the breathing space to sit and think. While I personally dont think of it as an issue, makers have to be more careful when making umbrella statements through movie dialogues, or at least quickly counter it Not glorifying misogyny Anjali R Pillai, film content creator @thefourthwall.in on Instagram Films are allowed to show us flawed people as well because, lets face it, they exist in our society. The cop characters dialogue gives us a glimpse into his filthy mindset and makes his ugliness clear. At no point does the film glorify or endorse the demeaning line about women. This line doesnt invite applause but disgust. Its not a celebration of prejudice but a sharp reminder of how judgmental attitudes sound when exposed on screen. When it comes to representation of the city, I think most Malayalam films set in Bengaluru capture a side of the city that young people can relate to. Be it with Lokah or other films like Dear Friend and Romancham its all about living independently with friends, figuring out careers, and relationships, not a judgmental caricature. Its about cinematic liberty Samarth Shivapur, sales head There are stereotypes about Pune and Delhi, too, but that doesnt mean filmmakers shouldnt use that context in cinema. Its just one scene where a police officer (played by Sandy Master) talks like that, with the character being shown as misogynistic. As for the parties, they happen all over the country. So if someones making a big deal about Bengaluru being shown in a bad light, they really just need to relax and let it go. Reductive representation R Sivasudar, UG student People from all professions, artists, students, and entrepreneurs contribute to the citys authenticity. Movies that only represent locals as criminals and sensationalise violence disregard this reality. What is more concerning is the demeaning portrayal of women, which strengthens stereotypes and harms the lives of many women who are shaping Bengalurus future. Cinema holds immense power to shape perceptions, especially for audiences unfamiliar with the city. I hope directors start showing the real Bengaluru, not just the dramatic parts. We deserve to be seen in full. City of youthful energy Sreejith Palliyil, travel designer For me, Bengaluru is the city of youth, diversity, and opportunities. People from different cultures and ideas come together here, and Bengaluru has always welcomed them with open arms. Young people often find more freedom here than they had under traditional norms back home. The city gives them the space to explore their individuality and aspirations. Thats why it feels unfair when films reduce the citys identity to stereotypes like drugs or paint its women in a demeaning way. I wish filmmakers would also highlight Bengalurus spirit of inclusivity and youthful energy. Wrong portrayal of Bengaluru cops RJ Anoopa, actor Firstly, the cop characters name is Nachiyappa Gowda. Gowdas are a community in Karnataka, but the role is played by Sandy Master, who is a Tamilian. They could have considered a local Kannada actor so that it would have done justice. The dialogue delivered by the cop shaming women in Bengaluru was uncalled for. It is a negative narrative about Bengaluru cops as well. The portrayal of the city is one-sided because yes, there are many pubs but that is just one part of the city; Bengaluru has its own rich culture. This portrayal will affect Bengalureans who are living here and the perception of non-Bengalureans who come to visit our city. Not everyone is mature enough to see it in a cinematic manner.

BHOPAL: Bigg Boss 7 fame actor Ajaz Khan has been booked by Indore Police Crime for allegedly glorifying gangster Salman Lala and linking the latter's recent death with his religious identity. The actor recently posted a provocative video on social media, which not just glorified the gangster, but also gave communal colour to his death. The case has been registered u/s 196, 223, 353(1)(b) and 353(1)(c) of BNS, which deal with attempts to disturb communal harmony and promoting hatred/disharmony between religious groups through false information, Indore's additional DCP-Crime Rajesh Dandotiya said. In the video posted on Instagram, the actor could be seen saying, It's being said that Salman Lala got drowned in the pond, but I believe he was a good swimmer. Amid Nepal protests, security heightened in seven border districts in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: With Nepal being in the grip of violent protests, the Uttar Pradesh government issued directives to the state police administration to remain on high alert across all seven border districts with the Himalayan nation. The move came after the resignation of Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli following days of anti-government protests led by young demonstrators against corruption and a controversial social media ban order. After the state governments directives, UP Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna ordered round-the-clock surveillance, intensified patrolling, and deployment of additional police personnel in Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj -- the seven districts which share a 600-km long border with Nepal. Moreover, a special control room has also been set up at the Police Headquarters in Lucknow to assist Indian nationals stranded in Nepal. Three helpline numbers, including one WhatsApp number, will remain operational 247 0522-2390257, 0522-2724010, and 9454401674 (WhatsApp also on 9454401674). According to ADG (Law & Order) Amitabh Yash, the UP Police is fully committed to maintaining law and order in the state and providing all possible assistance to Indian citizens stranded in Nepal. While the India-Nepal border has not been sealed, vigil has been stepped up. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the open porous border with the neighbouring Himalayan state, has intensified patrolling to prevent infiltration of anti-social elements. Commissioner of Devipatan division, Shashi Lal Bhushan Sushil, instructed district magistrates of Balrampur, Shravasti and Bahraich to coordinate closely with police and SSB authorities. Nepal's youth vs the 'nepo kids': A generation rises against a broken system The heightened alert follows violent protests in Kathmandu, and several other cities, where protesters stormed and torched the Parliament house, the Presidents office at Shital Niwas, and residences of top leaders. At least 19 people were killed and more than 500 injured in police firing and clashes. The unrest in Nepal was fuelled by the governments decision to ban 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube, citing revenue and cybersecurity concerns. Although the ban was later revoked, the crackdown fuelled public anger, with demonstrators demanding an end to corruption and greater accountability in governance. The protests have spread to border towns like Nepalgunj bordering Bahraich district of UP. Here schools and businesses remained closed for a second straight day. Protesters indulged in violence near Sonouli town, near Maharajganj district in Uttar Pradesh in Gorakhpur division. It is located on the Indo-Nepal border and is a well-known transit point between India and Nepal in eastern UP. The protestors set government offices afire and indulged in vandalism on the other side of the border. SSB sleuths nabbed nine prisoners from Nepal who had escaped from jail taking advantage of the unrest and had entered India. The SSP rounded up four Nepali prisoners at Sonouli border in Maharajganj and five at Khunwa border in Siddharthnagar. The security agencies are grilling them. With the borders with Nepal in Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri and Maharjganj sealed, over 200 Indian truckers were stranded on the Nepal side fearing damage to their vehicles by troublemakers. There is a long 8-km queue of Indian trucks at Sonouli border. Nepals Gen Z has done their part. What's next?
