Is hygiene harming women's lungs?

Cleaning our homes as always is a step towards good health. But recent research now warns that this daily habit or deep cleaning of houses maybe a silently damaging the lungs, especially in women. A European study found that women who regularly clean or deep clean their homes experienced a lung-function decline equivalent to smoking 10-20 cigarettes in a day over the same period. The study, which involved more than 6,000 individuals, showed that women who clean homes once a week may have measurable reduction in lung capacity even though they have never smoked. Men, interestingly, did not experience the same lung damage. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), household air pollution contributes to 3.2 million premature deaths every year worldwide. In India, where domestic cleaning is usually done by women compared to men, the impact is particularly severe on women. Household air pollution is estimated to account for 4-6% of the nations total diseases rate, making it a significant yet often overlooked public health concern. We assume that air pollution is only caused by traffic or industrial emissions, but studies show that indoor air can often be equally polluted. Cleaning products, toilet cleaners, detergents and room fresheners all emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fine particles like PM2.5 and PM10, which remains in the air. Inhaling these can trigger respiratory issues such as asthma, chronic issues, lung damage, and even chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). Natural products like baking soda, white vinegar, essential oils, and lemon juice can be used instead, for cleaning. Over time this exposure leads to respiratory problems, inflammation and in some cases, irreversible interstitial lung damage. Why women are at greater risk Women in Indian households spend more time indoors and are typically responsible for cleaning, cooking, etc., all of these increase their exposure to indoor pollutants. Household works like sweeping, mopping with strong disinfectants and using aerosol sprays contain fine dust and chemical fumes that remain in the air. Children in these homes also face long-term respiratory risks as their lungs are developing and are more sensitive to toxins. Safer Cleaning Habits for Healthier Lungs Small changes in daily cleaning practices can reduce these risks by: Avoiding aerosol and fragranced spray cleaners whenever possible. Using alternatives such as a microfibre cloth and plain water for dusting. Keeping doors and windows open while cleaning for ventilation. Choosing natural, non-toxic and fragrance-free cleaning products. Wearing a mask or using gloves during deep cleaning to reduce chemical exposure. The Need for Awareness The growing population of India is now relying on quick fix cleaning sprays and strong chemical disinfectants without understanding the impact and harmful chemicals involved. Public awareness campaigns are essential to help people understand the risks, and make safer choices, and encourage manufacturers to clearly label product ingredients and potential health hazards. Cleaning product commercials always highlight their features like long-lasting fragrance, or 99.9% germ-killing power, but rarely mention that these same chemicals release harmful volatile compounds into the air. The truth is that the scent of lemon or lavender doesnt mean safety, it often signals the presence of chemicals and artificial fragrances. Cleaning our own homes should never come at the cost of health issues. Understanding the hidden danger in everyday cleaning, and understanding these sustainable practices can protect not only just women but the entire family from any respiratory harm and health problems. Assam black tea, Kashmiri saffron, Bhagavad Gita among PM Modi's gifts to Putin

NEW DELHI: Flavourful Assam black tea, Kashmiri saffron, a handcrafted silver horse, an ornate tea set and a Russian edition of the Bhagavad Gita are among the gifts Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave to Russian President Vladimir Putin. A copy of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita presents Lord Krishna's guidance to Arjuna on duty, the eternal soul and spiritual liberation during the battle of the Mahabharata. Its timeless wisdom inspires ethical living, mind control and inner peace, with translations making it accessible to modern readers worldwide, officials said. Grown in the fertile Brahmaputra plains, Assam black tea is prized for its robust malty flavour, bright liquor and traditional processing using the 'Assamica' variety. Recognised with a GI tag in 2007, it represents a rich heritage shaped by land, climate and craft. Beyond its cultural legacy, it is also valued for potential health benefits, making each cup both comforting and wholesome. The ornate Murshidabad silver tea set, crafted with intricate engravings, reflects the rich artistry of West Bengal and the deep cultural importance of tea in both India and Russia. Gifted with affection, the set celebrates the enduring India-Russia friendship and the timeless ritual of tea, the officials said. The handcrafted silver horse from Maharashtra, adorned with intricate detailing, showcases the finesse of India's metal craft traditions. Symbolising dignity and valour celebrated in both Indian and Russian cultures, it reflects shared heritage and mutual respect, the officials said. The poised and forward-moving stance of the handcrafted horse serves as a metaphor for the enduring and ever-advancing India-Russia partnership. The handcrafted marble chess set from Agra blends fine craftsmanship with functional elegance, highlighting the region's stone inlay heritage under the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative. Kashmiri saffron, locally known as Kong or Zaffran, cultivated in the highlands of Kashmir, is prized for its rich colour, aroma and flavour, and holds deep cultural and culinary significance.

Russia reportedly bans Snapchat and FaceTime

Roskomnadzor, Russia's federal agency for monitoring and censoring mass media, has blocked access to Snapchat and FaceTime in the country, Bloomberg reports , citing Russian news service Interfax. The bans were reportedly put in place because the platforms were used to organize and carry out terrorist acts, and commit fraud. It's not clear if either service is still accessible by using a VPN, but banning Snapchat and FaceTime fits with Russias crackdown on communication and social platforms that started after the countrys invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Facebook and X were blocked in March of that year, and Instagram was added to the ban list not long after. In 2024, the encrypted messaging app Signal was also banned, and more recently in July 2025, Russia threatened to block access to WhatsApp . Engadget has contacted both Apple and Snap to comment on the Russian bans. We'll update this article if we hear back. Banning or restricting these platforms is a way to exert control over where and how conversation happens in Russia and prevent the spread of LGBT propaganda, if you believe Roskomnadzor's reasoning for banning Roblox but it might also be an attempt to drive people to use MAX, a state-run super app that offers services like communication, banking and document storage. The app is part of a long-standing push to rely on Russia's tech industry rather than foreign companies, and could potentially give the Russian government an easier method for surveilling its citizens, The New York Times reports . Meta says it's fixing its broken support system, with the help of AI

If you've ever had something go wrong with your Facebook or Instagram account, then you probably have a good idea of just how frustrating the support process can be. The company's automated processes are so broken that some people have found that suing Meta in small claims court can be a more reliable way of getting help from the company. Now, Meta says it's trying to address some of these longstanding issues. In an update , the company acknowledged that its support hasnt always met expectations but that a series of AI-powered updates should make it easier for people to get help. The company is rolling out a new support hub on Facebook and Instagram that is meant to bring all of its support features into one place. The hub will also have a new AI chat feature so users can ask questions about account issues or Meta's policies. An in-app support hub might not be that helpful if you can't access your account, though. A Meta spokesperson pointed to its external account recovery tool, which is meant to help people get back into their accounts. Recovering hacked accounts has long been a pain point for Facebook and Instagram users. But Meta says that it's now improved the process with better email and text alerts. AI has also helped the company's systems detect devices and locations you've frequently used in the past. Our new account recovery experience adjusts to your particular situation with clearer guidance and simpler verification, Meta writes. Weve also expanded recovery methods to include taking an optional selfie video to further verify your identity. Meta is also starting to test a new AI support assistant on Facebook that can provide instant, personalized help for issues like account recovery or managing your profile. It's not clear how this will work, or if it will enable people to talk to an actual person who works for Meta. For now, the most reliable way to access live support is via a Meta Verified subscription, though many users report that the chat-based service isn't able to help with more complex issues. A Meta spokesperson said that the assistant is in the early stages of testing and is currently only available to some Facebook users globally. Those who are part of the test can find it via the app's new support hub. According to Meta, these improvements have already shown some success in helping people get back into hacked accounts. The company says that this year it has increased the relative success rate of hacked account recovery by more than 30% in the US and Canada. Right kind of stress can actually protect your heart: Cardiologist explains the difference between good and bad stress

A recent Instagram video by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Jeremy London challenges the belief that all stress harms the heart. London urges people to embrace beneficial physical stress while limiting emotional overload to protect long-term heart health.

Meta's Oversight Board wants to expand its powers in 2026

The Oversight Board is getting ready to tackle a new pain point for Facebook and Instagram users. Up to now, users have been able to appeal content moderation decisions related to specific posts to the board, but haven't been able to ask the group to intervene in other situations that affect their accounts. That could soon change. The board says that it will weigh in on individual account-level penalties in a pilot next year. The board noted the change in an impact report recapping its five-year history and what lies ahead in the year to come. In 2026, our scope expands once more as we pilot the ability to review Metas decisions removing and impacting accounts, something that has created ongoing frustration for platform users, the report says. It's not clear how this process will work, but if the board plans to take on account-level issues like suspensions, it would be a significant expansion of its purview. In an interview with Engadget, board member Paolo Carozza said that Meta is expected to refer a case to the board in January that will deal with an account-level issue. The handling of that case will allow the board to explore how it might take on similar cases in the future. We're really excited to take it on because we think it's an important area that really affects a lot of users and their interests, he told Engadget. We all know how many people are constantly coming forward complaining about account-level restrictions or blocking or whatever else, and so if we get it right and it's going to be important to work it out this first pilot we're really optimistic that it's going to help open up a whole new avenue for us to be helpful to the users of [Meta's] platforms. Carozza added that there are a number of technical aspects and other questions still being worked out between the board and Meta. So for now, it's too soon to say whether there will ever be an official appeals process for suspensions, like there currently is for post removals. But he says Meta is equally invested in the effort. It's something we've been talking about with Meta for well over a year, he said. They've been expressing an openness and a willingness to give us access to those kinds of questions. The Oversight Board's report hints at another way its influence could potentially expand. It notes that the group's work has made it well-positioned to partner with a range of global tech companies as they navigate issues arising from free speech debates globally. Both Meta and Oversight Board officials have previously floated the idea that other companies might want to take advantage of its expertise. Up to now, most other platforms have had little incentive to do so. But Carozza says the rise of generative AI has created some new interest from non-Meta affiliated platforms, and that there have been really preliminary conversations with other companies. It feels like quite a different moment now, largely because of generative AI, LLMs, chatbots [and] the way that a variety of retail-level users of these technologies are facing a whole new set of challenges and harms that's attracting a lot of scrutiny, he said. We have had conversations in recent months with other tech companies in this space about the possibility that the board might be able to contribute helpful services to them to help navigate some of these really thorny questions. Videos of the stalled coaster, widely shared online by visitors, intensified concerns over safety at the Rs 611-crore park inaugurated on December 1 by Chief Minister MK Stalin. The 64-acre facility, which houses over 43 attractions including Indias first B&M inverted roller coaster Tanjora, witnessed multiple ride malfunctions within hours on its opening day, sources said. Several visitors said amusement park officials gave vague or delayed explanations about the disruptions, leading to tense exchanges at the venue. Wonderla MD Arun Chittilappilly issued an apology on Instagram while acknowledging the unexpectedly large turnout. Despite bad weather, more than 2,000 people visited the park on day one, he stated.

Madras Art Weekend reimagines the city through art

In Chennai, art is not merely something that hangs on walls; it drifts through salt-sweet sea breeze, stains fingers with filter coffee brown, echoes from temple corridors, and hums along the tracks of a metro line cutting through old neighbourhoods. The city itself is a living canvas. It is this sentiment that Madras Art Weekend (MAW) returns to celebrate, where Madras and art are nearly synonymous, each reshaping and reimagining the other. In its fourth edition, the theme for Madras Art Weekend 2025 is Madras Reimagined, asking a pertinent question: how do we preserve the memory of a city while sculpting its future? The annual festival, founded by Upasana Asrani, has evolved into a highly anticipated cultural event in Chennais creative calendar, bringing together artists, designers, architects, gallerists, collectors, and audiences. Madras Art Weekend is a festival for the city and for its people. It celebrates the spirit of Chennai and its creative pulse, says Upasana, reflecting on the journey since MAW began in 2022. What started as a niche space for contemporary art has since transformed into a movement that now shapes and mirrors Chennais cultural imagination. The festival has grown from strength to strength, year after year, evolving into a massive movement. People have been eager to be part of it, and it has now become an annual legacy of the city of Chennai, she says. The theme was conceived after months of conversations across the artistic ecosystem, which Upasana refers to as cultural custodians. MAWs visual identity, this year, was conceptualised with branding collaborators Whoa Mama Design, who worked closely with the festival to give shape to a narrative rooted in the cinematic, emotional, and historical layers of the city. We wanted to look at Madras through the lens of its past as well as its future, and the idea of Madras Reimagined emerged, she says. This edition expands its creative geography far beyond a single venue. While the VIP preview and Gallery Exhibit at Taj Coromandel remain the central showcase, featuring leading galleries such as Saralas Art Centre, DakshinaChitra Museum, Memeraki, among others, the festival spills into the city through collaborations with spaces including Raw Mango, Gallery Veda, Lakshana, and others. MAW has built a growing community through year-round engagement. We dont wake up a month before and scramble to put a programme together. We host events every month to stay connected with our community, Upasana notes. This includes collector home tours, studio visits, gallery collaborations, and digital storytelling formats that take audiences behind the scenes of the art-making process. Among the most anticipated additions this year is the Art Vandi, created in collaboration with NalandaWay Foundation. It is a mobile art van that has travelled through rural pockets, carrying art materials to children in remote communities. The vandi has enough art material for students to come in and do workshops with facilitators, says Upasana. Schools and institutions across Chennai have been invited to engage with the programme, reinforcing the festivals intent to plant seeds for the next generation of makers. The programming also includes a special workshop with Rainbow Fish Studio led by Sara Vettet, alongside a dynamic line-up of panel discussions, exhibition walkthroughs, and performances that bring together industry leaders, celebrated designers, architects, and artists from across the country, culminating in a poetic closing performance by Lekha Washington at Wild Garden Caf, Amethyst. For someone stepping into Madras Art Weekend for the first time, Upasanas message is simple: Explore all the parallel shows happening across the city, and then come to Taj, where all the galleries are exhibiting. Come, soak in the art, experience it. She reflects with quiet emotion, sharing that she is dedicating this edition to her late mother, whose support shaped her journey, and to her guide and mentor, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. MAWs commitment to inclusivity is visible in its educational and social outreach initiatives last years effort saw Chennais art community contribute supplies to students of Government College of Fine Arts, and this year, the festival hopes to fund the education of two deserving art students. In this edition of MAW, Chennai does not gaze nostalgically backwards; it walks forward with its history at its side. Madras Art Weekend 2025 unfolds across venues in Chennai, with the Gallery Exhibit at Taj Coromandel open to the public from today until December 6. Visit @madrasartweekend on Instagram.

Eight lakh children dropped out of schools in academic year, 3.7 lakh girls: Minister

NEW DELHI: India recorded nearly 8.5 lakh out-of-school children (OoSC) in 2025-26, of whom 3.7 lakh were girls, the Centre informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. In a written reply, Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, said that in 2024-25, the provisional figure for total OoSC was 11,76,894, of whom 5,09,499 were girls. She said the key reasons for children dropping out of school included migration, the socio-economic condition of families, the imposition of domestic responsibilities on children, and the need for children to work. A year later, the number of out-of-school children stood at 8,49,991 in 2025-26 (provisional), while the figure for girls was 3,78,877. In 2021-22, when the OoSC number stood at 27,79,644, there were 12,68,594 girls among them. In 2022-23, the OoSC number was 9,83,610, with 4,71,846 girls. In 2023-24, the total OoSC figure was 7,80,669, of whom 3,54,653 were girls. Thakur said that to reduce dropout rates, the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Education Ministry is implementing Samagra Shiksha , an integrated scheme for school education launched in 2018-19, covering the entire gamut from pre-school to Class XII. Among the various steps taken are the opening and strengthening of new schools up to the senior secondary level; construction of school buildings and additional classrooms; setting up, upgrading and running of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas; establishing Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Avasiya Vidyalayas; provision of free uniforms, free textbooks and transport allowance; enrolment and retention drives; construction of hostels under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan for unsaturated ST populations; and reimbursement under the RTE Act. The Samagra Shiksha scheme has been aligned with the recommendations of NEP 2020 to ensure that all children have access to quality education within an equitable and inclusive classroom environment that considers diverse backgrounds, multilingual needs and differing academic abilities, and encourages active participation in learning. More initiatives to address the issue The minister said the government has also undertaken initiatives such as the Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK) and the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID to monitor dropout rates and other education indicators. In addition, support is being provided through special training for age-appropriate admission of out-of-school children and training programmes for older residential and non-residential students. Seasonal hostels or residential camps, special training centres at worksites, and transport or escort facilities are also being provided to bring out-of-school children back into the formal education system. Financial assistance of up to 2,000 per annum is being provided to out-of-school children aged 1619 years, belonging to socio-economically disadvantaged groups, to help them complete their education through NIOS/SIOS and access course materials and certification. Under the student-oriented component for children with special needs, the scheme provides financial assistance for identification and assessment, aids and appliances, Braille kits and books, appropriate teachinglearning material, and stipends for girl students with disabilities. All states and Union Territories have been directed to reduce dropout rates and the number of out-of-school children. States have also been asked to participate in the Bringing Children Back to School campaign with active involvement of School Management Committees and community participation through Panchayati Raj Institutions.

From Bengaluru to MIT: How Oakridge Students are Turning the World into Their Classroom

What if the most valuable lesson a student could learn wasn't found in a classroom, but in a robotics lab in Boston or during a conversation with an ecologist on the Andaman coast? Oakridge International School, Bengaluru , is built on the belief that education must transcend four walls. The institution is moving beyond passive learning by integrating the IB curriculum with Nord Anglias global network, guaranteeing that students learn by doing; whether that is engineering for microgravity or leading diplomatic debates. Oakridge Bengaluru students gaining global, hands-on learning experiences Principal Kavita Sukhani emphasizes that these experiences are central to the schools mission. Every time our children return from MIT or a conservation project in the Andamans, they come back different, more confident, more curious, and more ready for the world. Thats what real education means to us . As part of the Nord Anglia Education network, Oakridge students have exclusive access to visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) coupled with exclusive MIT-hosted webinars where students interact virtually with world-renowned professors and researchers. During the recent NAE STEAM Week at MIT, Vedant represented the school and collaborated with peers from around the world to engineer a ferris wheel experiment designed for microgravity, using Arduino sensors to analyse rotational velocity. The staff at MIT allowed us to be very creative, conduct any experiment without fear, and apply our knowledge in the most hands-on way possible, while giving us all the tools and support we needed to bring our ideas to life , said Vedant. The experience not only strengthened his scientific understanding but also boosted his confidence and sense of possibility. Closer to home, the schools educational trips are designed as academic extensions rather than vacations. In the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, students explored diverse marine habitats, identifying organisms such as sea slugs and brittle starfish. For many, touching and observing these species up close made ecological learning far more meaningful than classroom diagrams ever could. In Goa, applied skills were honed at the Makers Asylum, where they learned soldering and electronics to build functioning components. Several students overcame their initial hesitation with tools and proudly showcased functional prototypes by the end of the workshop. Students visiting Hampi analyzed the architecture and sustainability lessons found in the ancient ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, turning history into a live archaeology lesson. Walking through the stone corridors turned history into a lived experience, helping students understand cultural and architectural significance firsthand. The "classroom beyond walls" philosophy extends to governance. The schools 10th Edition of OAKMUN (Model United Nations) was entirely student-run, managing over 350 delegates under the theme Voices That Wont Wait. Similarly, the annual service event CASNIVAL transforms students into social entrepreneurs, managing finances and operations to raise funds for a non-profit foundation. Ultimately, Oakridge International School Bengaluru is forging a generation of compassionate, globally aware individuals who are not just prepared for the world's top universities, but are equipped to lead and create positive change within it. About Nord Anglia Education As a leading international schools organisation, we're shaping a generation of creative and resilient global citizens who graduate from our schools with everything they need for success, whatever they choose to be or do in life. Our strong academic foundations combine world-class teaching and curricula with cutting-edge technology and facilities, creating learning experiences like no other. Inside and outside of the classroom, we inspire our students to achieve more than they ever thought possible. No two children learn the same way, which is why our schools around the world personalise learning to what works best for every student. Inspired by our high-quality teachers, our students achieve outstanding academic results and go on to study at the world's top universities. Our Nord Anglia global family includes 89 day and boarding schools in 37 countries, teaching over 100,000 students from ages 3 to 18. www.oakridge.in/bengaluru/ enquiry-form/ For admission enquiries please email: mac.blr@oakridge.in Or call: 70223 08007 / 70223 05007

Cuteness chori along the thin line between creative & cringe

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the election season in full swing, voters across the state are weighing their choices. They are scanning candidates positions on development, welfare, neighbourhood issues, and party lines. Well, this usual stuff. But now, running parallel to these familiar considerations, another trend has emerged in the campaign space: rise of the glamour and cuteness quotient. Notably, a large number of young candidates, especially women, have stepped into the contest, and social media has catapulted many of them into instant micro-celebrities stealing hearts. Some are just out of college, or in the middle of a course. Troll pages, meme accounts, and short-form videos are celebrating candidates not for their politics, but for their looks, style, and on-camera appeal. Creators have also jumped in, pairing posters of young candidates, especially women, with syrupy background tracks in place of campaign songs or slogans. One meme doing the rounds shows boys alongside a candidate poster, wondering if there was any chance to vote in that panchayat where an attractive woman is contesting from. Another one shows men expressing disappointment over their ward not having the glamour quotient. On Instagram, a reel with the caption Now election days shows a smiling man getting swayed by a slide show of young women candidates representing various parties. Chakkara chundil thechu vechoru punchiri goes the background song. And this one has got 33 lakh views, 3.4 lakh shares, and over 1,200 comments. While some such memes and reels are creative and cute, others appear cringe and crass. And most of these trending candidates are well aware of this, and are clear about the boundaries. Social media does help connect with youngsters, but the way some troll pages turn women candidates into crush content or flirtatious reels is not right. While online, all I do is share posters and updates, says 23-year-old Absalna, LDF candidate from Chadayamangalam blocks Chingeli division. We are political representatives. A candidate should be recognised for their political stand, their ideas, their ability to serve society not their age, gender, or appearance. What worries me is how social media often sexualises women for fun. Twenty-five-year-old Swathy S Kumar, the NDABJP candidate from Edavacode ward, says she actively uses social media as part of her campaign. However, she is equally aware of its nasty side. Some memes and comments reflect a deep-rooted patriarchal mindset, she says. Moreover, when a woman wins, there will always be someone claiming that its because of her looks rather than her work. Swathy hopes candidates on-ground efforts are not marred by social media timepass. Many of these trolls use my posters, too. I just mark them not interested or report them. I just want to work with the people and improve our surroundings. Vyshna Suresh, the Congress candidate for the Muttada division of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, echoes the same sentiment. Social media can help as well as harm, she says. However, it remains the only space where candidates can reach people across generations. She believes only a tiny fraction of users circulate trivialising memes. Honestly, Keralas voters are not that gullible. People here have a strong political culture. We are not that shallow as a society, she says. For Amal Sivadas, UDF candidate from Panakunnam ward in Mararikulam North grama panchayat, the trend is apolitical in nature, but youngsters alone cannot be blamed. Many youngsters are unaware of what is happening around them. Mocking them only pushes them further away from politics. We are now focusing on bringing them into the campaign, says the footballer. Political commentator J Prabhash attributes the social media trend to the demographic shift being witnessed. Local body elections have always been a training ground where parties groom young aspirants for bigger roles. However, what is different this time is the sheer number of newcomers in the fray, he notes. Moreover, when voters do not care much about ideology or morality, attention naturally shifts to other cues. Politics, in general, turns into a performance art at times. And glamour can become part of the show.
