The Morning After: Our pick of the best Black Friday deals for 2025
Welcome back! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, were facing the annual torrent of Black Friday deals (and non-deals). I stand by $100 off the PS5 probably being the most intriguing discount this year, as its a rare one and consoles have continued to get more expensive in the last few years. There are other big discounts on more tech I personally bought (at full price, ugh), like Ankers Laptop Power Bank, down from $135 to $88 . I confess to giving a full show-and-tell performance when someone asks me about this giant battery pack, capable of charging laptops, Switch consoles and multiple phones. The best feature is the two built-in cables: one as a carrying strap, the other a retractable cable that is very satisfying to use. 25,000mAh is more than enough for multiple phone top-ups too. Alongside small discounts on some Apple devices like the latest AirPods Pro, the iPad (A16) is down to $274 . Its the cheapest current-gen Apple tablet and more than enough for most. Sure, we wish the display were laminated and had some anti-glare coating, but a 21 percent discount? That mostly makes up for that. Going on experience, most of the best deals have been announced by now, but a few surprises could pop up in the early hours of the morning. Keep an eye on our Black Friday 2025 deals page for the latest deals before they sell out. Mat Smith Get Engadget's newsletter delivered direct to your inbox. Subscribe right here! Sony teases the A7 V, its next flagship midrange camera When you have as many cameras as Sony, you can call something a flagship midrange. Tech news is a little light, as most companies push their sales and stock-clearance offers. However, Sony appears to be ready to announce another addition to its Alpha camera lineup. The company shared an image on the Sony Alpha Instagram account with the text Chase your dream and the date December 2 at 9AM EST. The giant V is likely an unsubtle reference to a Sony A7 V, a follow-up to the Sony Alpha 7 IV. Rumors suggest the A7 V could feature a new 33MP partially stacked sensor designed by Sony. It might be able to capture 30 fps video in electronic shutter mode and 4K 60 fps video without cropping the sensor. That could make it more potent than Sonys cinema cameras, like the FX2. Some bad news for anyone whos been using Plex to stream stuff from a buddys personal media server. The service is starting to enforce a paywall for remote streaming from an individual server to TV apps. Plex is rolling out the change on its Roku app this week, followed by its other TV apps (on the likes of Fire TV, Apple TV and Android TV) and third-party clients that use its remote streaming API in 2026. The owner of a media server will need a Plex Pass subscription to grant other people remote access to it through the service. A Plex Pass now costs $7 per month, $70 per year or $250 for a lifetime membership. Yeah, it's the opposite of a deal. Continue reading. Delhi traders try to cremate mannequin to claim insurance money, arrested in UP
HAPUR: Two Delhi-based traders were arrested here after they allegedly tried to cremate a mannequin instead of a human body as part of an elaborate plot to fraudulently claim insurance money worth Rs 50 lakh to pay a debt, police said on Friday. The bizarre sequence unfolded when four men arrived in a Haryana-registered car with what they claimed was a corpse. They bought ghee and other items required for the last rites and quietly placed the ody on a pyre. However, their nervous behaviour caught the attention of Nitin, a municipal employee present at the cremation ghat. When he pulled the sheet covering the ody, he found that it was actually a mannequin on the pyre. He immediately alerted the municipal authorities, police said. After receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the car of the accused along with three mannequins. Two of the accused -- Kamal Somani and his associate Ashish Khurana, both residents of Jain Colony in Delhi's Uttam Nagar -- were arrested. Two of their associates managed to escape, police said. During interrogation, Somani, a textile trader, confessed that he had a debt of Rs 50 lakh and had been depressed for months. To repay the amount, he devised an elaborate scheme. He obtained the Aadhaar and PAN cards of Anshul, the brother of his employee Neeraj, on the pretext of some paperwork, took out a Rs 50 lakh Tata AIA insurance policy in Anshul's name nearly a year ago, and had been paying the premiums regularly, said Circle Officer Stuti Singh. The plan was to send Anshul out of town, pass the mannequin off as his body, cremate it to obtain an official receipt from the cremation ground, secure a death certificate, and then claim the insurance payout, police said. Police used Somani's phone to video call Anshul, who was in Prayagraj. He told police he had no idea his death was being staged at Brijghat, they said. Circle Officer Singh said it was a case of insurance fraud. An investigation is underway and efforts are on to trace the absconding suspects, she said.

BMC issues stop-work notices to 53 construction sites as Mumbai battles worsening air quality
MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that it has issued stop-work notices to 53 construction sites for contributing to air pollution, as the city grapples with deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI). The civic body on Thursday also directed that the air pollution guidelines it had laid down should be followed strictly. These include installing sensors to monitor AQI that remain operational all the time. Ashwini Joshi, Additional Municipal Commissioner (city), warned of strict action if AQI sensors were found to be non-operational. Earlier in the day, the Bombay High Court said the authorities cannot blame ash clouds from the volcanic eruption in Ethiopia for the air pollution in India's financial capital, as the AQI has been poor for a long time. A bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad was urged to take up the hearing of a bunch of pleas from 2023 on the issue of air pollution in the city. Senior counsels Darius Khambata and Janak Dwarkadas, appearing for the petitioners, said the AQI in the city has been consistently poor and above 300 this month. Additional government pleader Jyoti Chavan said air pollution has worsened due to the volcanic eruption in Ethiopia two days ago. The court, however, did not entertain the argument. Even before this eruption, if one stepped out, visibility was poor beyond 500 metres, the court said. Referring to the situation in Delhi, which is witnessing alarming levels of AQI, the HC asked what effective measures can be taken to address the issue. We are all seeing what is happening in Delhi. What is the effect of that? the bench questioned, posting the matter for hearing on Friday. Hayli Gubbi, a shield volcano in Ethiopia's Afar region, erupted on Sunday, producing a large ash plume that rose to around 14 km in the sky. The plume spread eastward across the Red Sea and towards the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora wrote to the BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, urging him to take immediate and extraordinary action, including a temporary halt to all digging and construction sites until the air quality improves. Mumbai's air pollution crisis is no longer a seasonal issue --- it is a public health emergency. India needs a nationwide war and a national consensus against air pollution, Deora said. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said even as Mumbai's AQI worsens every day, and the city competes with Delhi on this score, the governments from top to bottom, currently controlled by the BJP and its allies, conveniently ignore people's plight. In Mumbai, builders and contractors are a priority for the BJP government, while apart from the construction and demolition works, tree felling in the name of development is the new mantra of the BJP, he alleged. On its part, the civic body pointed out that various steps are being undertaken to address air pollution, including forcing bakeries and crematoriums to use cleaner fuels, introducing electric buses, managing construction debris scientifically, and using machines to sprinkle water on roads to control dust. In October last year, the BMC issued 28 guidelines which include installing metal fencing and green cloth covering around construction sites to control dust, carrying out water sprinkling, properly storing and transporting debris, installing air quality monitoring devices and setting up smoke absorption systems, among other measures. To ensure compliance, flying squads have been formed, the civic body said. The BMC added that as of November 26, it has issued 53 stop-work notices to construction sites contributing to air pollution. These included 17 in Siddharth Nagar (G-South ward), five in Mazgaon (E ward) and 31 in Malad West (P-North ward). Additional Municipal Commissioner Joshi also reviewed the operational status of sensor-based AQI monitoring systems at construction sites on Thursday. A total of 662 such systems have been installed across Mumbai, while the installation of another 251 was in progress. Of these, 400 systems are integrated with a unified data dashboard. It was found that 117 systems are currently inactive. Joshi warned that stringent action will be taken against responsible parties through the 95 ward-level flying squads if any system is found non-functional. Bakeries have also been identified as a contributing factor to air pollution. Out of 593 bakeries in Mumbai, 209 already operate using clean fuel. The civic body said that due to its efforts, an additional 57 bakeries have transitioned to clean fuel, 75 have initiated this transition within the last six months, and 88 have applied to obtain piped natural gas from Mahanagar Gas.

Long wait for fertilizer turns deadly for 58-year-old tribal woman in Madhya Pradeshs Guna district
BHOPAL: A 58-year-old tribal woman, Bhuriya Bai Saharia, sleeping outside a fertilizer distribution centre, after not getting urea fertilizer for two consecutive days, died on the intervening night of Wednesday-Thursday in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. The tragic incident happened just a few hours after the local MP and union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, had arrived in his constituency. Bhuriya Bai belonged to the Saharia tribe, one of the three particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) residing in MP. According to her relatives, she had first lined up at the fertilizer distribution centre in Bageri village on Tuesday, but had to return empty handed to her village, located around 20 km away. She reportedly lined up again at the centre on Wednesday, but couldnt get the fertilizer yet again. Instead of returning home, she stayed back like others and slept outside the centre on Wednesday night, hoping that she would be among the first ones on Thursday morning to get the fertilizer from the centre. However, she fell ill while sleeping outside the centre. Her relatives said that they called an ambulance, which never came. Later another farmer rushed her in his private vehicle to the health centre in Bamori. With her condition deteriorating, she was referred by doctors to Guna city, where she died at the hospital in the early hours. According to Guna district collector Kishor Kanyal, She was already ill and didnt know that her blood sugar level was as high as 450. She was admitted to hospital, where she died. Were repeatedly telling people not to panic as there is no need to stay back in the night outside the distribution centres. There is no shortage of urea, since were daily getting 30-35 trucks of urea. In the last 55 days, 30,000 MT urea has been distributed in our district and there is adequate availability of fertilizer presently, Kanyal said. We are likely to get one more rake of urea in the next few days, he added. Scindia also confirmed that there is no shortage of fertilisers. Ive asked the Guna district collector to increase the number of distribution counters in the double lock centres. We still have 15,000 MT fertilizer. There isnt need to panic, as a regular supply of fertilizer is being maintained, he said. Im monitoring from Delhi, the availability of fertilizer for all three districts, Guna, Shivpuri and Ashoknagar. There is also a need to gradually shift from chemical fertilizers to organic farming for sustainable agriculture. The opposition and ruling party MLAs, both questioned the government claims of sufficient fertilizer availability in Guna. If there is sufficient fertilizer available, then why are farmers lining up at the centres and even sleeping outside the centres in the night, Congress MLA from Bamori (Guna) Rishi Agrawal questioned. At a public event in Guna city on Thursday, the second-time BJP MLA Pannalal Shakya raised the issue from the stage of event where Scindia too was present. The woman died while yearning for fertilizer in the night hours. The district collector is sitting here, let him answer me, if your system is functioning properly why are the lines of farmers visible outside the distribution centres., Shakya questioned. We want a reply, if not here, well get it in the coming Vidhan Sabha session, he added.
The hidden skill of Metacognition: What is it and how it makes the brain work smarter
We all spend our days thinking, solving problems, making choices, learning new things, yet most of us rarely pause to examine how we think. Hidden beneath our everyday decisions is a quiet skill that shapes everything from how well we learn to how confidently we navigate challenges. This skill is called metacognition. In recent years, researchers have shown that strengthening this skill can meaningfully improve real-world outcomes. But what exactly is metacognition, and why does it matter so much in daily life? Below we explore. Metacognition literally means thinking about ones own thinking. Its the set of skills and processes that lets one monitor, evaluate, and control their own cognitive activity. For example; reading a paragraph and noticing we dont understand it. Then, deciding to re-read it, and checking later if we remember it. According to ResearchGate, the term Metacognition was popularized by John H. Flavell in the 1970s.

Pant Pens Apology After 0-2 Whitewash: 'Sorry We Couldnt Live Up To Expectations'
Barsapara Cricket Stadium: Indias wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant admitted that the team 'did not play good cricket' in the recently concluded two-game Test series against South Africa and apologised to the fans for not being able to live up to their expectations. India suffered a 0-2 whitewash at home as the Proteas dominated the proceedings throughout the two Tests in Kolkata and Guwahati. After the reigning World Test champions, South Africa, clinched their first Test win in India since 2010 in the Kolkata Test, the visitors sealed their historic series victory by handing India its heaviest defeat with a 408-run win in the second Test. This was the Proteas' second Test series win in India after their 2-0 sweep in February-March 2000 under Hansie Cronje. Former England football captain and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir David Beckham visited an MJPAPBCWREIS residential school for girls in Visakhapatnam today to see Project-Based Learning (PBL) in action. His visit is part of a wider Mantra4Change programme supported by Education Above All that is improving classrooms across Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Nagaland. Sir David Beckham with students ofMJPAPBCWREIS residential school inVisakhapatnam Sir Davids visit, confirmed in a social media update posted late on Wednesday night, brought national attention to a hands-on approach to schooling that places student projects, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving at the centre of learning. Mantra4Change, in partnership with the MJP Society and supported by Education Above All (EAA), has redesigned teaching and learning in 107 residential schools across Andhra Pradesh, reaching roughly 18,000 students and building the capacity of 107 school leaders. The PBL programme has been integrated across English, Mathematics, and Science, turning traditional classrooms into active learning spaces where students learn by doing, collaborate on projects, and present solutions to community problems. On the ground in Visakhapatnam During his visit, Sir David met with students and teachers at the school, observing how Project-Based Learning comes alive in everyday classrooms. He began by sitting in on a live PBL session before being guided by students to a small exhibition where children presented projects across English, Mathematics, and Science. He also joined a group of students for a tree-planting activity, where children demonstrated how they scan and label saplings with digital IDs. In the school library, Sir David participated in a reading circle and spoke with children about their favourite books. The visit concluded outdoors, where students invited him to join a lively one-touch football drill. School leaders shared how these varied activities reflect the PBL approach, boosting student confidence, encouraging collaboration, and helping children connect learning with real-life contexts. In his Instagram post, Sir David said, Great day in India going back to school supporting Education Above Alls project based learning initiatives so much fun . It gives us great joy that Sir David Beckham chose to visit one of our MJP schools. Its a proud moment for all of us in the MJP society. His presence at our school in a place like Kothavalasa is a beautiful reminder that when we work with the right intent and dedication, extraordinary things can happen. Project-based Learning has energised our classrooms, and we hope to keep nurturing this spirit of learning , said P. Madhavi Latha, Secretary, MJPAPBCWREIS. Project-Based Learning shifts the focus from rote recall to applied understanding. It builds transferable skills, communication, critical thinking, creativity, while lifting measurable academic outcomes. The Mantra4Change-EAA partnership is an example of how targeted support, teacher development and curriculum redesign can scale classroom practices across states. Santosh More, Co-Founder of Mantra4Change , said, Sir David Beckhams visit is an inspiration for all of us and a powerful signal that innovation in our government schools matters. Project-Based Learning is raising childrens aspirations, and moments like this strengthen our resolve to work with governments and communities to make such learning the norm . The visit also adds fresh momentum to Shikshagraha, a people-powered national movement being co-built by Mantra4Change that is working to improve one million public schools across India. Sir Davids presence and public endorsement of innovative classroom practices like Project-Based Learning strengthens the movements core message: that communities, teachers, governments and civil society must come together to transform everyday schooling. The visibility generated by this visit helps amplify Shikshagrahas call for collective action and accelerates its efforts to ensure every child in a public school has access to meaningful, engaging and future-ready learning. About Mantra4Change Mantra4Change is a non-profit organisation transforming public schools in India through educational leadership. Our approach involves driving continuous school improvements by empowering education leaders, transforming schools to create an enriching learning experience, and inspiring civil society organisations across India to collectively work towards transformation in education. Couple from Mysuru held in fake Nandini ghee racket
BENGALURU: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested a couple from Mysuru in connection with the racket in selling adulterated ghee under Nandini brand . Earlier, the CCB arrested four people, including a distributor of KMF products. The couple reportedly ran a hi-tech illegal manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadus Tiruppur. CCB sleuths have frozen Rs 60 lakh in the bank accounts of the couple, suspecting that it could be proceeds from the crime. Investigations revealed that the accused, Shivakumar and his wife Ramya, were wanted in a case of manufacturing fake products in Mysuru. They led a large network involved in the production of adulterated ghee and selling it. In a joint operation, the CCB and KMFs vigilance wing arrested Mahendra, distributor of KMF products, his son Deepak, Muniraju, who supervised transportation of adulterated ghee from Tamil Nadu, and driver Abhi Arasu on November 14. Around 8,136 litres of adulterated ghee worth Rs 1.26 crore, four vehicles, and a large quantity of coconut and palm oil were seized. The accused produced three litres of adulterated ghee using one litre of original ghee. The accused packed adulterated ghee in sachets and plastic bottles having Nandini logo and supplied it to the Bengaluru-based distributor of KMF products. The accused also distributed adulterated ghee to wholesale and retail shops and Nandini outlets across the city. The joint team raided godowns and shops and seized goods vehicles of Krishna Enterprises at Nanjamba Agrahara, Chamarajpet, owned by one of the accused and his family members.

Sony teases the A7 V, its next flagship midrange camera
Sony appears to be ready to announce another addition to its Alpha camera lineup. The company shared an image on the Sony Alpha Instagram account with the text Chase your dream and the date December 2 at 9AM EST, which could be a teaser for its next mirrorless camera. It's possible the company has something else in mind, but the giant V or Roman numeral five in the background of the image seems like a clear reference to an unannounced Sony A7 V, a follow-up to the Sony Alpha 7 IV. Considering there was around a four year gap between the release of the A7 III and A7 IV , releasing the new camera in 2026 would make the timing lineup, too. View this post on Instagram Rumors suggest the A7 V could feature a new 33MP partially stacked sensor designed by Sony, along with the ability to capture 4K / 60 fps video. The company is also rumored to be announcing at least two new lenses to go with the new camera. Since the Alpha 7 IV started at $2,500, it seems safe to expect that these upgrades could cost even more when the camera is officially announced in December. Noida police submit 500-page chargesheet in Nikki Bhatti murder case
LUCKNOW: The Noida police have submitted a 500-page chargesheet in court in the Nikki Bhatti murder case. Nikki was allegedly set on fire by her husband, Vipin Bhatti, with the assistance of her mother-in-law, Daya Bhatti, after thinner was poured on her. The chargesheet reportedly states that the prime accused, Vipin Bhatti, tried to escape by jumping from the roof to avoid the CCTV installed at their residence. According to police, Nikki was quite active on social media platforms and used to make reels against her husbands wishes. This reportedly led to discord between Nikki and Vipin, who then planned to eliminate her. The police claimed in the chargesheet that Vipin had the support of his father, Satveer Bhatti, mother Daya, and brother Rohit. All of them were present at home during the incident but hid in the house to avoid CCTV. Nikki was burnt to death on August 21, 2025, at 5:45 PM. After the murder, the accused took her to Fortis Hospital to create the impression that they were trying to save her. The post-mortem report found that Nikkis body had 80 percent burns, which led to her death. Currently, all the accused are in jail. The prime accused, Vipin Bhatti, was caught by police after being shot in the leg during an encounter. The Noida police have named Vipin Bhatti and his mother Daya as the main conspirators in the murder of Nikki Bhatti, according to a chargesheet prepared based on statements from Nikkis son, her husband, and her elder sister Kanchan, who is married to Vipins brother Rohit. Kanchan and Nikkis son confirmed that Vipin, with his mothers help, planned and carried out the murder. The chargesheet also includes the hospitals medical report, which initially suggested the burns were caused by a cylinder explosion. However, the investigation team rejected this claim after inspecting the crime scene, bed, kitchen, gas stove, courtyard, and the entire house, finding no evidence of a cylinder blast. Police investigations further revealed that Vipin was unhappy with Nikki running a boutique and Kanchan operating a beauty parlour at home. He reportedly objected to both sisters maintaining Instagram accounts. Both Kanchan and Nikki were married to Rohit and Vipin, respectively, from Sirsa village in December 2016. The investigation also brought out the issue of dowry demands by Vipin and his parents. Nikkis father, Raj Singh, claimed that he had given dowry beyond his means, including a Scorpio car at the time of her wedding, but the in-laws continued demanding an additional Rs 35 lakh. The in-laws reportedly physically tortured both Nikki and Kanchan.

The rapid acceleration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses the most significant challenge yet to gender equity in the workforce and wealth creation. This was the central focus at the TalentNomics Indias 10th Annual Conference, 'Power. Pixel. Parity.,' where top corporate leaders, investors, and innovators gathered to move beyond fear to build a proactive roadmap for Responsible AI and gender equity in Indias future of work, wealth and wellbeing. CP Gurnani, Manoj Chugh, & Jagdish Mitra joined Ipsita Kathuria at the 10th Annual TalentNomics Conference: Equity in the Age of Automation The day was anchored by powerful insights from three of Indias most respected leaders: CP Gurnani underscored that the path to AI equity requires deliberate, ethical design. What can we do to keep our power of curiosity, our power of creative thinking, our power of learning and applying data in our everyday life. Because to me AI is all about training the data, and if AI is all about training the data, then I need to pick up instances where I can power it. The pivotal question from industry veteran Manoj Chugh served as a call to action: Are we interrupting the bias? If not, we are not doing good. The core message was that since AI learns from historical, often biased, data, the responsibility lies with human leaders to interrupt these patterns through sponsorship and intentional design . Suparna Mitra highlighted the necessity of intentional gender equity strategies in leadership and consumption. At the Talentnomics India 10th Annual conference, I had the privilege of addressing the good people who had gathered to discuss how the AI revolution will impact gender dynamics. Whenever a new technology comes, the existing norms get re-shaped. The AI revolution does not just belong to the people who work on the technology, but all of those who use the technology. The moral and ethical dimensions need to be examined for us to ensure that the gender gap is balanced, rather than get worsened. The Future of Work & The Disruption of Income The session, 'Work Rebooted Breaking the Digital Ceiling,' moderated by Lata Singh, dissected the differential impact of AI on the workforce, highlighting the urgent need for task-level reskilling. Task-Level Disruption: Jagdish Mitra emphasized that AI disruption occurs at the task level, not just the role level. He noted that while women make up 35% of the IT workforce, nearly 70% of their roles are task-heavy and highly exposed to automation. His guidance: HR teams must champion diversity, and individuals must perform a task-based analysis of their job to identify what to reskill for. The Investment Risk of Inequity: Dr. Archana Hingorani connected workforce gender equity to the balance sheet. She argued that ignoring the displacement of women creates systemic market instability and limits the available talent pool, making ignoring gender equity a bad business decision for the investor. Owning the AI Ecosystem: Shalaka Verma outlined the three key opportunity domains: Builders of AI, Maintainers of AI, and Users of AI, urging women to seize the early-mover advantage in this transition and actively define their space before others define it for them. The Infrastructure of Wealth & Wellbeing These panels addressed how AI impacts the fundamental structures of wealth creation and care, from investments to healthcare access. Code to Capital: Reducing the Wealth Gap: The deeply insightful session on the gender wealth gap, led by Soumya Rajan and Anita George, concluded that the gap stems from structural issues and behavioral biases. They affirmed that AI is a powerful 'copilot' capable of de-biasing financial planning and nudging women from mere savers to active investors. Anita George stressed that "Investing is self-care" and emphasized the need for trust, governance, and security in the financial sector to ensure women become true capital creators. & Priyadarshi Mohaparta highlighted how a hybrid "phygital" model using Community Champions (primarily women) can be the viable solution for Indias large rural market, ensuring the entire loop of diagnostics and medicine is closed and reducing time burdens for women caregivers. The Human Heart of Empathy: Dr. Dev Brar addressed the limits of AI in mental health, noting: AI heard my words, but not my silence. Bhavana Issar also emphasised that while AI can enable wellbeing, it cannot replace the Human touch. Shilpa Ajwani concluded that Human and technical review must go hand in hand to ensure AI works for everyone. Governance and Guardrails: The Mandate for Equitable AI The consensus across the conference was that AI is not inherently biased, but rather amplifies the bias already present in the human data it learns from, necessitating strong guardrails. Bias Amplification: The session on 'Unbiased by Design' concluded that AI models are inherently prone to perpetuating historical human biases because they learn from flawed data, making simply removing gender labels insufficient. The core consensus of the panel, featuring Kiran Chhabra, Renu Menon, Uma Rani, and Arjun Venkatraman, captured by the motto "Nothing About Us Without Us," is that achieving equitable AI requires active, sustained oversight. Policy and Accountability: This includes enforcing mandatory AI audits and governance frameworks to ensure equal error rates across demographic groups, and critically, involving women and underrepresented groups as data stewards to reduce bias at the source of data collection and annotation. As observed by L Venkata Subramanian and Aneesh Patnaik, we need technological solutions, diverse policy input, and active user feedback. Societal Movement: Sunaina Kumar emphasized that patriarchal structures are mirrored in digital spaces, and without robust governance, AI risks weakening women's economic security. Ratnesh Jha concluded that fixing this requires a societal "movement," stressing that companies must be held accountable by consumers, and organizations must commit to not allowing bias in their own systemic decisions. Conclusion: Sponsorship and Concrete Action The conference underscored that fixing the future starts with fixing the present. The most potent advice from the floor was the need to move from mentorship to sponsorship . Sponsorship is the actionthe advocacy and the intentional door-openingthat ensures women are in the rooms where AI decisions are being shaped. Neeta Boochra, member of the TalentNomics Advisory Board, rekindled the rooms momentum with her vote of thanks, reinforcing that influence must translate into opportunity and conversation into measurable change. The conference's success lay in its commitment to translating high-level dialogue into concrete, actionable steps toward a gender-equitable Digital future. About TalentNomics India TalentNomics India is a non-profit organisation working to create a world where gender equity is the norm. Since 2016, the organisation has operated leadership development programs for women and convened annual conferences featuring multi-stakeholder dialogues on barriers to equity in work, wealth, wellbeing, and welfare. Building a home for art in the city
Community, for Ananthapadmanabhan V, was a concept he became familiar with very early in life by watching his mother. When they were in Dubai, she was involved in different community activities, helping women in difficult situations return home, supporting small charities for animals, and organising simple fundraising events like school bake sales. He often assisted her in these efforts, and over time, this exposure influenced how he viewed people, support systems, and collective responsibility. After returning to his hometown and taking up photography, he realised that the values he learned in childhood were still driving the way he looked at the world. When I was working as a photographer, any event that was connected to a community, I would do it for free because I liked the concept, he says. But he also began noticing that in Thiruvananthapuram, dedicated communities for artists were few. The city had musicians, dancers, poets, visual artists, photographers, and many talented individuals, but they were scattered and lacked a shared space to meet, collaborate, and grow. I wanted to create a community where everybody could come, connect, collaborate, perform, and grow, the 29-year-old said. This thinking led to the creation of The Ark Art, Rhythm and Collective. He explains that many emerging artists hesitate to step forward because they do not know the right people. Someone constantly posting music videos online may never meet instrumentalists who could collaborate with them. My goal is to give upcoming artists visibility, opportunities, and a supportive group of people who share the same creative energy. Basically, I want to create an ecosystem for artists to create good memories, Ananthapadmanabhan adds. Although the idea has been in his mind for a long time, he has been actively working on it for about a month. To get started, he personally contacted around 100 artists across the city. About 3035 responded, forming the initial foundation of the group. A band has already formed from within this early pool. Another challenge artists in Thiruvananthapuram face, he says, is the lack of accessible venues. Even well-established groups often spend significant amounts just to organise a meet-up. To address this, The Ark has taken up Ambalathil Hall at Ambalamukku and is converting it into a creative community space - something closer to an art caf than a traditional club. The venue can host around 300 people, and the initial goal is to organise at least four different events or host four different creative communities every month. The idea is to create a common umbrella for the many artistic communities in the city. The Arks first open mic will be held on December 7 at that space, with more than 25 upcoming artists set to perform, including over 10 instrumentalists, a Bharatanatyam showcase, and several singers. So, people know that a new community is opening and they are all welcome, he says. Another programme is being planned for December 14, featuring a dance and rap battle. These kinds of events usually push artists to travel to Kochi or other cities. I want them to happen here, so people dont have to leave the city to find opportunities, he said. Kerala seeks urgent release of pending SSK funds as RTE, support for disabled children face strain
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has written to the Centre seeking urgent disbursal of pending funds under the Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) project, especially those relating to implementation of the Right To Education (RTE) Act and assistance for differently-abled children. General Education Minister V Sivankutty said that of the Rs 1,158 crore of pending Central funds under SSK, Rs 408 crore relates to various services under the RTE Act and assistance for differently-abled students. He said that a fresh proposal has been given to the Centre to release funds under the two heads immediately. The minister said the Centre had not allotted any funds for the past two-and-a-half years through SSK. After a long gap, the funds were released this month. However, of the Rs 456 crore sanctioned for 2025-26 fiscal, only the first instalment of Rs 92.41 crore has been disbursed. Sivankutty said funds received under the RTE Act cover essential needs such as free uniforms, textbooks, hostel expenses and travel allowances for children from SC/ST categories. Training for children of migrant labourers, hostel expenses for girl students, school maintenance, and other essential requirements are also being met with the same funds. He noted that a total of 169 autism centres were functioning in the state under SSK with each centre providing services to an average of 60 children. Currently, 6,870 staff members, including teachers, are working under SKK and during the past two-and-a-half years, the state government ensured the programme continued uninterrupted and that employees received their salaries on time, even without any Central assistance. The minister also accused the state BJP leadership and Union ministers from the state of intervening at the Centre to block funds owed to Kerala.
Dont file FIRs, please' says comedian Abish Mathew
Long before he became one of the most recognisable comedy voices, Abish Mathew was a radio jockey in Delhi a young man with an instinct for humour. From there came the YouTube hits, comedy clubs, the specials, the tours, Comicstaan, Son of Abish, improv sets, sketch videos, and an evolving stage persona that refuses to sit still. Abish has never been just a stand-up; he is a host, writer, performer and creator who is constantly evolving. He recently brought his latest set, Abish Mathew and His Many Talents: Part Two, to Kochi. We sat down to chat the next morning after the performance. When I walked into the venue, he was already hunched over his iPad, stylus in hand replaying the previous nights recording and marking every response. Where the audience laughed, where they chuckled or applauded, and where a joke didnt quite land. It was an almost surgical review of the art of laughter and perhaps the most fitting snapshot of a performer who is constantly fine-tuning himself. In this chat, Abish opened up about discovering clowning, the science of humour, the chilling effect on comedy today, and the emotional weight of drawing from personal history. Excerpts: What do you prefer calling yourself artist, comedian, something else? I honestly dont know. My music teacher once told me that you dont define your own genre; the audience tells you what you are. Your job is to create in the moment. So, we are nothing but references of things we love. And if we merge them, we become unique. If someone calls me an artist, Ill happily take it. But I personally prefer freelancer as that identity keeps me accountable. It reminds me of discipline, deadlines and employment. In any creative field, you need one for the kitchen, one for the soul. Art should feed your spirit, but something must also pay the bills. Ive been fortunate that my passion became my profession, but timing mattered. If YouTube hadnt happened when it did, or if that whole wave with AIB, Vir (Das), hadnt come at the time, I might have ended up in an advertising agency. What brought you to clowning? I had first discovered clowning years ago through Cirque du Soleil on YouTube. David Shiner, Mila Uesoft clowns who could make an audience the centre of the show without saying a word. As I grew up, I found stand-up, later improv, and forgot about clowning. A workshop in Mumbai by Pyotr Sikovar (Furioso) re-ignited something. His idea of the flop blew my mind going with an idea, letting it fail, and staying in the failure. The audience roots for you precisely because you never succeed. The power dynamic is beautiful. Abish during a performance You recently went to Norway to explore clowning. How was that experience? The Norway Clown Camp was a month-long residency on a farm with 1520 people from around the world. Philip Burgers (Dr Brown) taught us. He is someone Id admired for years. Seeing him in person and learning the importance of making eye contact with the audience, being vulnerable and uncomfortable all of it changed something in me. I feel more fearless on stage now. Is this why clowning has become important to you? Absolutely. Clowning forces me to keep quiet. Thats my new challenge can I make an audience laugh in silence? But even clowning will flirt with political incorrectness. The goal is not to test limits but to understand: both the comedian and the audience are flawed. You also study comedy. Do you like calling yourself a nerd? Im a comedy nerd, 100%. Before I touched the stage, I was obsessively researching comedy. I get very excited when someone writes a bit, and I become curious to know how did they think of it. From all the interactions I have had with other comedians, I have realised that, many of the jokes werent written on paper they happened serendipitously maybe because of something an audience member said or it just came to them as a thought on stage. Is that true for you too? Yes. Earlier, I believed a joke had to be perfect before I went on stage. Now I write diligently, but I also allow discovery. I talk to myself in the mirror, rehearse jokes and review every set. If something works accidentally, I make a note of it so its not lost. Recently, a joke about men and women dancing or moving their pelvis differently at sangeet ceremonies worked three times in a row. I dont know if its a good joke yet but Ill explore it until it proves itself or fails. Do concepts like theories of humour influence you? Very much. Superiority theory, surprise theory... Recently, I learnt about benign violations. It was introduced to me by Viggo Venn (who won Britains Got Talent), a world-renowned clown. Benign violation is humour that violates softly, just enough to be funny but not offensive. Like the pelvis joke. My hope is that even my parents would laugh that is the sweet spot. Push beyond that, and it stops being benign; it just becomes crass. In recent years, comedians have been targeted frequently. Do you feel its becoming more difficult to be a comedian today? Yes. Theres the chilling effect.Someone explained it to me like this: once, being homosexual was illegal, but the police wont come to your house to check. Still, the fear shaped who you are outside your house. That same chilling effect has seeped into comedy. Some comedians boldly say, I will talk anyway, and you admire that courage. You aspire to get there. But if you dont have financial, legal or network support, especially in India, what happens to you? Its absolutely okay to disagree with something I said or did. Just dont file FIRs, please. Vent it out. Come threaten me on Instagram DM, and I will understand. Or maybe block you (laughs). Its not just comedians the audience has changed too. Theres this cultural shift of, If I cant say it, then you cant say it. Most people catch themselves doing it and stop themselves from acting on it. Ideally, scrutiny should go towards hate speech not jokes but thats not how it plays out. So you end up doing family-friendly humour even when you want to talk about bigger things. Do you feel freer in Kerala? 100%. The audience here shares a similar social and political mindset. Not identical views just an openness. We grew up not understanding politics, but this is the age where we finally speak about the country a little bit, right? There are comics who do it more confidently than I do, and I hope to get there. Kerala gives me that space. Also, Kerala laughs at political humour in a way few other places do. Its cultural. I grew up in Delhi, but I used to watch Munshi. Political commentary has been part of humour here for decades. So there were bold artists before us. When I know the audience is my audience, whether its Kerala or Gujarat, I can be open. If its a corporate gig or a festival, where I dont know whos coming, I have to be more careful, not just for me, but for the organisers too. Youve performed a song in one of your sets, which revealed the story behind your name. A combination of your older brothers names (Anish+Binish). There was so much grief in it (since Binish passed away before you were born), how did that song come about? During the lockdown, I was alone and had creative space. In that silence I discovered things about myself. I realised that writing lyrics or rhymes makes you more intentional than when youre just clicking keys on a keyboard. So I wrote a draft and almost forgot about it. Then Spoken Fest asked me to perform. A poet-artist friend, Shantanu, heard it and told me to develop it. So I did a spoken-word version. Later, when I did Abish Mathew and His Many Talents, I included a 10-minute piece of that, because quite a few people encouraged me to do so. It didnt fit a stand-up show; its quite a downer. So I added it somewhere in the middle. That piece makes me emotional. There are times I almost choke up. I had to practice to control it because if I cried on stage repeatedly, it would look like self-obsession. The special Im releasing ends with that song and the guitar part I added mirrors how I felt. Whats next? I am working on a new bit, a special in development. I do want to talk about what this love is. what it is like to be married, why does one need to be married. But I haven't gotten there yet. I have just been able to get to a point where I am talking about my experiences of love. Now that might become a separate special, before that I need to spend a little bit more time with myself on these things. Now, being married twice, theres insight there. Life is very different now. I see myself as two different people with two different people. And I think: Oh my God, Abish. You are the problem! I want to talk about my married life through my lens. It will be challenging but worth it. It will be about me, my insecurity, which I know many men will relate to. Thats what I want to tackle in this bit.

Amore and More: a candid chat with the new Italian Consul General in B'luru Giandomenico Milano
With two post-graduate degrees under his belt, the newly appointed Consul General of Italy in Bengaluru is no stranger to exam stress, but something recently took him right back to those times: wine sommelier exams. I graduated in July after writing three different exams, it was kind of scary to back and feel that anxiety, laughs Giandomenico Milano, as a spread of Italian snacks, including tiny amaretti, cannoli and pieces of focaccia beckon the reporters gathered for an informal chat with him. He adds, Ive always had an interest in wine and the culture behind it. This programme was two years of studying the chemistry, geography and the history of it. It was fascinating. Its been a busy three months for Milano, with getting settled into a new city with his wife and two kids and planning one of his first major events as the Consul General The Week of Italian Cuisine in the World. He notes that the initiative is far more than a culinary celebration and describes it as an expression of Italian culture, identity and values. Bengalurus dynamic dining landscape, he observes, makes it an ideal setting for such a cultural exchange. Welcoming chef Italo Bassi, he adds, enhances the programmes significance, with his Michelin recognition, deep grounding in Italian tradition and contemporary creative flair. Sharing his first impressions of the city, Milano says, Id say theres no better place than Bengaluru, even though Im a bit biased. I think we Italians and Bengalureans have a lot of energy and the same values rooted in tradition and innovation. Its this mix he wants his tenure in Bengaluru to embody. He says, When people think of Italy, they think of food, fashion, art and history which we are happy about but more than that, Italy is also always reinventing itself in areas like robotics, aerospace and design innovation. We recently had a strong Italian presence at Bangalore Tech Summit too. Even though there are just roughly 100 Italians in the city, many of whom Milano has met, he reveals, Surprisingly, there are also 100 Italian companies in the city involved in a mix of IT, innovation, food and hospitality. Milano, who grew up in the Molise region in Southern Italy nestled between Rome and Naples, describes it as a not very well-known but an authentic place rooted in tradition. He adds, I had a very free upbringing in the countryside and a happy childhood but I wanted to see the world. Perhaps thats been one of the drivers to have this career to connect and discover. That desire to discover led him to jobs at embassies in Ethiopia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka before bringing him to Bengaluru, but this is not his first brush with India. When I was in Sri Lanka, India was close so I travelled to Delhi, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Kerala and saw the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Ajanta Ellora caves in Maharashtra. Travelling gives you flexibility and opens your mind to face any counterpart, he says. However, his favourite has been a recent trip to Mysuru, as he says, I went during Vijayadashami the palace was stunning and the parade impressive. Milano also has plans for events across music, art, and technology. A multilingual speaker of Spanish, Italian, English, and French, one area of interest is language, as he explains, There are not many Italian speakers in Bengaluru and the South compared to North India so wed really like to encourage that. Were looking into organising opportunities to meet and have conversations with an Italian speaker. Has he picked up any Indian languages? Milano says, I try to include a few Kannada phrases in speeches with the help of my colleagues, but I need to improve! So far, my biggest problem has been with learning the alphabet. With that, it was time to say ciao (and namaskara) to the Consul General, the sweetness of amaretti lingering on the tongue with the promise to return for more tastes of Italy that he hopes to bring to ooru.

In the tournament, he amassed 88 runs without being dismissed, scoring a vital 30* against Pakistan in the tense final and a composed, undefeated 50 against South Africa in the Super Eights. A young Rohit gave a glimpse of a bright future as India raised the trophy. In 2024, seventeen years later, he led a team seeking redemption and an ICC title that had eluded the men's team for more than ten years. Leading from the front, Rohit scored 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70, frequently giving India the upper hand during the PowerPlay. One of the tournament's pivotal innings was his 92 off 41 balls against Australia in the Super Eights, a blazing declaration of dominance. His half-century against England in the semi-final set the stage for Indias march to glory. And once India sealed the trophy, Rohit bowed out of T20Is on the highest possible note, leaving behind a void and a legacy.
