Warm November made sugarcane less sweet, prone to pests
NEW DELHI: Warmer winter has reduced the sweetness of jaggery and created a conducive weather for pest attacks on sugarcane plants in western Uttar Pradesh, one of the largest sugarcane producer belts in the country. According to the India Meteorological Department, November was the warmest month for Northwest India since 1901. The normal mean temperature is 18.77 C which rose to 20.14 C. Northwest India meteorological region, of which Western UP is a part, shows 80% deficient rainfall in November. Generally, local manufacturing centres start processing jaggery from November. But warmer November led to higher water content and lesser formation of sucrose in sugarcane plants reduced its productivity, experts say. Warmer weather also created a conducive condition of pest attack on sugarcane crops. There are still relatively higher water content in cane even in first week of December instead of sucrose which led to either lesser jaggery production or no production, said Nischay Mallik, owner of Freyr Food, a jaggery manufacturing unit in Muzaffarnagar. The recovery rate of jiggery is still below 8% from the cane, he said. According to the latest bulletin of National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories, this year sugar recovery rate from sugarcane is 7.85%, which was 8.60% last year. Farmers feel that 15-20% of crops get affected due to diseases and warmer weather. Generally, the sugarcane growth stage ends at the end of middle of October and harvesting, processing of crops and jaggery start in early November. But this year monsoon rain extended till the first week of October and later higher temperatures than normal were observed which invited pests and led to late sucrose formation, said Mallik.

Allahabad HC rejects anticipatory bail plea of teacher who asked students to slap Muslim boy
The Allahabad High Court. (Photo: ANI) The Allahabad High Court. (Photo: ANI) Muzaffarnagar: The Allahabad High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a school teacher who asked class 2 students to slap their Muslim friend, a lawyer said on Thursday about the incident that sparked widespread outrage last year. A bench comprising Justice Deepak Verma refused to grant the relief and directed the applicant to surrender before the court concerned within two weeks from the date of the order and apply for regular bail, the plaintiff's lawyer said. The lower court had already rejected the anticipatory bail plea on October 16. Now, the high court has upheld that decision, rejecting the teacher's plea on November 23, Kamran Zaidi, the lawyer representing the victim, said. According to the prosecution, police filed a charge sheet against Tripti Tyagi under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings). Additionally, charges under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act have been invoked, the lawyer said. The case drew widespread attention and condemnation after a video surfaced in August 2023, showing Tyagi instructing her students of Class 2 to slap a Muslim classmate while making a communal remark in Khubbapur village. Muzaffarnagar police had registered a case against the teacher over the incident, while the school was also served a notice by the state's education department. On November 10, 2023, the Supreme Court had castigated the state government for not complying with its order to depute an agency for counselling the victim child. On January 12, the apex court said the developments that followed the unsavoury incident were the result of the state not doing what was expected of it after the offence was committed. A bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan had said the state should have been concerned about the manner in which the incident had happened.
NOIDA: Police on Tuesday arrested more than 160 protesting farmers, including the president of Bharatiya Kisan Parishad Sukhbir Yadav 'Khalifa', who were holding a sit-in at the 'Dalit Prerna Sthal' in Noida after their march to Delhi on land compensation and other demands was stopped a day earlier. The protesters, who had gathered in Gautam Buddh Nagar from different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Monday on the call of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), had threatened to resume their march to the national capital if their demands were not met within a week. Condemning the police action, the SKM said it was a violation of the constitutional rights for peaceful protest and urged the judiciary to intervene. In a statement, the farmers' collective claimed the police had arrested hundreds of farmers including more than one hundred women and forcibly evicted them from the protest site. The SKM alleged that the police had violated the consensus reached with the farmers' leadership on December 2, asking for seven days to allow the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh to discuss and resolve the demands. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Shiv Hari Meena said that they arrested more than 160 protesters at around 1.30 pm under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The provision allows the police to carry out arrests to prevent the commission of a cognisable offence. Among the arrested were women and several farmer leaders like Khalifa and Pawan Khatana the state president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Western Uttar Pradesh), according to the police. The protesters were taken to the Luksar jail in Noida, officials said. Khalifa told PTI on phone that they will continue to fight for their just demands. Slamming the arrests, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) convened an emergency panchayat over the matter at the Kisan Bhavan in Sisauli village of Muzaffarnagar where it decided to amplify the protest on Wednesday. It was decided in the Panchayat that BKU workers from the five divisions of Uttar Pradesh, which include Meerut, Saharanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Moradabad -- will reach the 'Zero Point' in Gautam Buddha Nagar while peaceful dharna would be observed across all other districts in their respective police stations, BKU's youth wing president of Uttar Pradesh Anuj Singh told PTI. Zero Point refers to a location at the convergence point of the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Buddh Nagar district's Greater Noida city. BKU leader Rakesh Tikait warned that the ongoing protest led by the SKM would turn into a nationwide agitation of farmers. Tikait asserted that the moment the farm leaders of Gautam Buddh Nagar call for help, we will immediately respond to their call. The BKU leader, who was in Iglas here on Tuesday in connection with a private function, was speaking to media persons during his visit. This agitation would turn into a nationwide agitation of farmers who are protesting against the unjust manner in which farmlands are being acquired by the government without paying just and full payment to the farmers, he said. He said that the Gautam Buddh Nagar protest has been put off till December 9 to give the government some time to resolve this long-standing dispute between farmers in that district and the authorities which had been continuously delaying the process of payment of full compensation as envisaged by the Land Acquisition Act 2013. Tikait said that the farmers of Gautam Buddh Nagar are not alone in this protest and representatives of different farmers' organisations have been stationed there to assist them in their quest for justice. He said it has become a regular practice of the present government to acquire farmlands at low prices and to add to the farmers' woes, even the agreed amount of compensation is delayed inordinately. I will shortly be visiting Gautam Buddh Nagar to converse with the local leaders of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha during their ongoing negotiations with officials of the state government, he said. The farmers had gathered near the Mahamaya flyover and left for Delhi on Monday demanding proper compensation for their land acquired by the government, but were stopped by the police near Dalit Prerna Sthal, after which they sat on dharna there. Massive traffic snarls had caused inconvenience to commuters crossing the Delhi-Noida border as police had set up multiple layers of barricades and deployed heavy security to stop the march, which coincided with Parliament's Winter Session.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha proposes financial assistance to farmers for stubble management
CHANDIGARH: Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha proposed a comprehensive initiative to support farmers in stubble management, requesting the central government to provide assistance of Rs 2,500 per acre to farmers. He added that sustainable solutions to stubble burning require robust financial and policy backing. While taking up this issue in the upper house of the parliament today, Chadha also pointed out that while farmers are unfairly blamed for contributing to air pollution in North India, the problem is fuelled by several factors across many states. He emphasised that this year, under AAPs leadership, Punjab saw a remarkable 70 per cent drop in stubble-burning incidents, proving that progress is possible with the right support. Chadha raised concern over prevailing pollution in North India and its impact in Rajya Sabha, stating that North India is currently covered in a thick blanket of smoke. He said, with every breath, we are unknowingly inhaling the equivalent of numerous cigarettes and bidis. Air pollution isnt just Delhis problem its a crisis affecting the entire region, spanning multiple states. Cities in the North such as Bhagalpur, Muzaffarnagar, Noida, Hapur, Bhiwani, Agra, Faridabad face way more pollution than Delhi. Yet, the blame is disproportionately placed on farmers. Today, I stand to raise my voice in their defence, he added. He further stated that an IIT study shows that while stubble burning is a cause of air pollution, it is not the only one. However, the entire blame is unfairly shifted onto farmers. Punjab reports 70 per cent reduction in stubble burning, highlights Ex-Situ management efforts Throughout the year, we call farmers our gods and anndata, but come November, we label them as criminals, demanding they be fined or jailed, he said. Chadha asserted, no farmer deliberately or willingly burns stubble. They do it out of sheer compulsion. This year, AAP ruled Punjab saw a reduction of more than 70 per cent in stubble-burning incidents. In contrast, states like Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan reported an increase. He emphasised that Punjab took up paddy farming to feed the country when there was a shortage of food grains. However, this has come at a great cost to Punjab. He said, Our water table has dropped by 600 feet, our soil has degraded, and this is despite the fact that rice is not a staple food for Punjabis. He added that after harvesting paddy, farmers are left with stubble, which they have only 1012 days to clear before sowing the next crop. If they dont clear it in time, the yield of the next crop is adversely affected. This forces farmers to burn the stubble. SC raises concerns over Punjab, Haryanas inaction on stubble burning amid rising air pollution Chadha pointed out that solutions like Happy Seeders and Paddy Choppers come with a hefty price tag, requiring farmers to spend Rs 2,0003,000 per acre to operate them. For farmers already struggling to break even, such expenses are unaffordable, leaving them with no choice but to burn stubble. Tragically, the worst affected by this toxic air are the farmers themselves and their families, who are forced to breathe it. He proposed a solution stating, if we provide farmers in Punjab and Haryana Rs 2,500 per acre as immediate financial assistance to manage stubble, no farmer will burn it. Of this, Rs 2,000 should be contributed by the central government, and the state government will bear the remaining cost. This will offer a short-term solution to the stubble-burning issue. Chadha further stated, As for a long-term solution, we need to promote crop diversification, moving away from paddy to crops like cotton, maize, pulses, and oilseeds. While we talk a lot about AI (Artificial Intelligence), we also need to talk about AQI (Air Quality Index).

The SP took to microblogging site X to post that the state government deployed police at the homes of leaders who were part of the delegation, preventing them from travelling to Sambhal. UP Dy CM Maurya terms 'batenge toh katenge' slogan a call for unity
LUCKNOW: A day after evading questions on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's 'batenge toh katenge' slogan, his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya on Sunday described it as a call for unity and asked why was the opposition having a stomach ache over the slogan. The slogan, frequently used by Adityanath on the campaign trail, has united the opposition in its condemnation ahead of the November 20 bypolls, claiming that it has communal overtones. The clear message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the slogans -- 'If we stay united, we will be safe, if we divide, we will be cut' -- that emerged from their speeches is a symbol of the unity and determination for all workers. There are no differences of opinion in the BJP, nor there was, nor will there will be, Maurya said in a post in Hindi on X. This slogan comes straight from the hearts of party workers like me. The BJP's slogan is 'If we stay united, we will be safe',' he added. Taking potshots at the opposition parties, the deputy chief minister asked why was the Samajwadi Party, Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party having stomach aches due to this unity? If the pain is unbearable, get it treated, take medicines, he added. This is not UP: Ajit Pawar opposes 'batenge toh katenge'; Fadnavis links stance to 'past anti-Hindu ideologies' A day earlier, Maurya had created flutters in the political circles of Uttar Pradesh by refusing to comment on Adityanath's atenge toh katenge slogan, saying questions about it should be directed to the chief minister. On Sunday, sharpened his attacks at the main opposition Samajwadi Party over its PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) pitch. We have to respond to the fake PDA abuses spread by the Samajwadi Party and its chief Akhilesh Yadav in the same way Lord Krishna replied to Shishupal. In 2024, the Cycle (SP's poll symbol) has to be punctured by making the lotus bloom so that the polls deposits of SP candidates are forfeited. The Samajwadi Party has to be turned into a 'samaaptvaadi' party by deepening the wounds of the crushing defeats it faced in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2022 (elections), he said in a post in Hindi on X. Bypolls to nine assembly seats -- Katehari in Ambedkar Nagar, Karhal in Mainpuri, Meerapur in Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad, Majhawan in Mirzapur, Sisamau in Kanpur City, Khair in Aligarh, Phulpur in Prayagraj and Kundarki in Moradabad -- will be held on November 20. Eight of these seats fell vacant after their MLAs were elected as Lok Sabha MPs, while the bypoll on the Sisamau seat has been necessitated due to the disqualification of SP MLA Irfan Solanki, who was convicted in a criminal case. The Congress is not contesting the bypolls and is supporting its INDIA bloc partner Samajwadi Party. Kharge counters 'batenge, katenge' slogan, says many Congress leaders died for country's unity

BJP releases list of eight candidates for Uttar Pradesh bypoll
LUCKNOW: A day ahead of the last date for filing nomination papers, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday ended speculation by announcing candidates for eight out of the nine seats going to by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. However, the party has left the Meerapur seat in Muzaffarnagar for ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), but managed to field Mithilesh Pal, a party functionary, to contest from the RLD symbol. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP rejected ally Nishad Party's demand for two seats Katehari and Manjhawan. However, in Katehari, the party has fielded a candidate from the Nishad community. The 10th seat, Milkipur in Ayodhya, which was also to go to by-polls, was left out by the Election Commission due to an ongoing legal dispute. The last date for filing nominations is Friday, with polling scheduled for November 13. Notably, of the nine seats, four, Karhal, Kundarki, Katehari, and Sisamau were won by the Samajwadi Party (SP), three , Ghaziabad, Khair, and Phulpur by the BJP, and one each by the Nishad Party and RLD, Manjhawan and Meerapur, respectively in the 2022 Assembly elections. In light of the ruling party's poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls, where OBC and Dalit voters drifted away from it, the BJP has cautiously expressed confidence in four OBC candidates to galvanise the community. This is particularly important with the state assembly elections just two-and-a-half years away, as the OBC community has historically been a decisive factor in Uttar Pradesh politics. Of the remaining four candidates, two are Brahmins, one is a Thakur, and one comes from a Dalit background. Notably, the party has set up a Yadav-versus-Yadav contest in Karhal by fielding Anujesh Yadav, the brother-in-law of SP MP Dharmendra Yadav (cousin of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav). Karhal, a traditional SP stronghold, was previously represented by Akhilesh Yadav, who vacated the seat after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj. Akhilesh has chosen his nephew, Tej Pratap Yadav, to contest from the seat. Anujesh Yadav and his wife Sandhya (Dharmendra Yadavs sister), the former Zila Panchayat president from Mainpuri, had switched to the BJP in 2017. In Kundarki, a Muslim-dominated seat in Moradabad, the BJP has fielded Ramvir Singh, a Thakur. Singh, a former district general secretary, contested the same seat in the 2012 and 2017 Assembly elections but lost both times to SPs Mohammad Rizwan. In Ghaziabad, considered a BJP stronghold, the party has fielded its district president Sanjiv Sharma, a Brahmin, making his electoral debut. In Khair, a reserved seat in Aligarh, the BJP has fielded Surendra Diler, a Valmiki Dalit and the son of former BJP MP from Hathras, Rajvir Diler, who passed away in April this year. In Phulpur, the party has fielded Deepak Patel, son of Keshari Devi Patel, the former Phulpur MP. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the party replaced Keshari Devi with Pravin Patel, who won the Phulpur seat. In Katehari, the BJP has fielded Dharmaraj Nishad, a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) turncoat who joined the BJP just before the 2022 Assembly elections. Nishad, a three-time BSP MLA, won the seat in 1996, 2002, and 2007. In Manjhawan, the party has fielded Suchismita Maurya, who won the seat in the 2017 elections by defeating BSPs Ramesh Bind with a margin of nearly 42,000 votes. In Sisamau, where the by-poll was necessitated by the conviction of SP MLA Irfan Solanki in a criminal case, the BJP has fielded Suresh Awasthi. Awasthi contested Sisamau in 2017 but lost to Solanki by a margin of around 5,000 votes. He also contested the 2022 Aryanagar seat in Kanpur but lost to SP's Amitabh Bajpai by around 8,000 votes. Meanwhile, both the SP and BSP also released their lists of candidates on Thursday. The SP announced candidates for the Ghaziabad and Khair seats after failing to reach a seat-sharing agreement with its INDIA bloc partner, Congress. The BSP also announced candidates for eight of the nine seats going to polls on November 13. In Ghaziabad, the SP repeated its strategy of fielding a Dalit on an unreserved seat, as it did in Ayodhya in the recent Lok Sabha polls, by fielding Awadhesh Prasad against the BJPs Lallu Singh. Awadhesh Prasad defeated the BJP candidate by over 50,000 votes. Similarly, in Ghaziabad, the SP has fielded Singh Raj Jatav, and in Khair, a reserved seat, Akhilesh Yadav has fielded Dr. Charu Kain. Of the eight candidates declared on Thursday, the BSP has given preference to OBCs by fielding five OBC candidates. In Phulpur and Ghaziabad, the party has replaced its Dalit candidates with OBC candidates, clearly indicating its focus on consolidating OBC votes. Additionally, the party has fielded two Muslim candidates in Meerapur and Kundarki, and two Brahmins Virendra Kumar Shukla and Deepak Tiwari from Sisamau and Manjhawan, respectively.

Eight of these seats fell vacant after their MLAs were elected as MPs in the Lok Sabha, while a bypoll is being held on the Sisamau seat due to the disqualification of SP MLA Irfan Solanki, who was convicted in a criminal case. The Congress had originally demanded five of 10 assembly seats (including Milkipur). The SP, however, last week said the Congress had agreed to contest on two seats, Ghaziabad and Khair (Aligarh), leaving the rest to the SP. The Election Commission has announced a by-election on nine seats, leaving out Milkipur (Ayodhya). The last date for filing nominations is October 25. The SP has already declared its candidates from Karhal, Sisamau, Phulpur, Milkipur, Katehari, Majahawan and Meerapur. Counting of votes will take place on November 23.

uttar-pradesh-bypolls-how-family-connections-are-ruling-sp-candidate-list
The Samajwadi Partys list of candidates for the upcoming bypolls is tilted towards familial political connections. Bypolls are set to be held to 10 assembly seats -- Katehari (Ambedkar Nagar), Karhal (Mainpuri), Milkipur (Ayodhya), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Sisamau (Kanpur city), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj) and Kundarki (Moradabad). Tej Pratap Yadav is the party candidate from Karhal, the seat vacated by Akhilesh Yadav after winning the Lok Sabha election from Kannauj. The candidate is the nephew of Akhilesh and the grandson of late SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadavs elder brother. He was the MP from Mainpuri in 2014 and describes himself as a 'sports enthusiast' on his social media profile. He is married to Lalu Prasad Yadavs daughter Rajlakshmi. This selection has been made keeping the seats connection with the Yadav family. It must be noted that Tej Pratap was initially set to fight the LS election, but his candidature was opposed within the party. Sumbul Rana the party candidate from Meerpur is the daughter-in-law of former MP Kadir Rana and the daughter of Rajya Sabha MP Munqad Ali whose political affiliations lay with the BSP. The Sisamau ticket has gone to Naseem Solanki, the wife of Irfan Solanki. The candidates husband is currently undergoing a jail term for seven years on a charge of arson. Naseems selection has been made keeping in mind that the sympathy for her husband should work in her favour. In Katehri, the party candidate is Shobhawati Verma who is the wife of Lalji Verma. With the husband just getting elected an MP, the SP is banking on his popularity to rub off on the wife. The Phulpur ticket has been given to Mustafa Siddiqui who is a three-time MLA. Siddiqui has oscillated between the BSP and the SP. The party has put its faith in Siddiqui as he lost the last Vidhan Sabha polls by just 2,500 votes. Jyoti Bind, the partys choice from Majhawan is the daughter of Ramesh Bind, a former BJP MP and three-time BSP MLA. Bind is a doctor and hopes to cash in on her fathers popularity to make her path to victory smooth. In addition, the party has announced the name of Ajit Prasad- the son of Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad from Milkipur. Nine of these seats fell vacant after its MLAs were elected as MPs in the Lok Sabha polls, except Sisamau seat which fell vacant due to the disqualification of SP MLA Irfan Solanki. Except Milkipur, the Election Commission has announced polls on the rest nine seats. The polling seats will be held on November 13.

On the way to Bijnor, Sub-inspector Sunil Kumar kept them illegally at his house in Shamli, where the boy died, he said. Police were investigating the death and the boy's body had been sent for postmortem in Shamli, Circle Office Shyam Singh told PTI. UP bypoll: BJP likely to contest nine seats leaving Meerapur for RLD
LUCKNOW: The Haryana assembly poll outcome seems to have pushed the ruling BJP to be more accommodative as far as the Jat support is concerned. The saffron brass, which was contemplating to contest all the 10 Uttar Pradesh bypoll assembly seats itself, may now leave one seat in western UP for ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). As per the highly-placed sources, the ruling party has finalised the names of the candidates for nine seats except Meerapur segment in Muzaffarnagar district and it may go to the RLD. The Meerapur seat has been vacated due to the victory of sitting RLD MLA Chandan Chauhan from Bijnor Lok Sabha seat for the lower house of parliament in recently concluded general elections. In a high-level meeting in Delhi late on Sunday evening, the partys Central leadership put its seal on the names of the candidates for the nine seats. However, the announcement is likely to be made only after the Election Commission of India (ECI) issues notification for the bypolls. In the meeting presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda at his residence, it was decided to offer the Meerapur seat to the RLD. However, the party refused to concede any seat to the NISHAD Party though it had a sitting MLA Dr Vinod Bind in the Majhawan Assembly segment in Mirzapur. Bind won on BJP symbol in the Lok Sabha election from Bhadohi. Hence NISHAD party chief Dr Sanjay Nishad had been demanding Majhawan to contest in bypoll. As per the sources, BJP UP chief Bhupendra Chaudhury along with both the deputy CMs Keshav Maurya and Brajesh Pathak - have been deputed to convince Sanjay Nishad to relinquish his claim to the seat. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, both the deputy chief ministers, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, BJP State President Bhupendra Chaudhary, and General Secretary, Organisation Dharampal were present in the meeting that lasted for about an hour. Congress sees 'possibilities' on seat sharing after ally SP names candidates for UP Bypolls However, BJP sources said on Monday that the party would field only backward leaders from the Katehri, Majhawan, and Phulpur seats. The party will field a Dalit face in Milkipur since it is a reserved seat and the stakes are quite high. Notably, the sitting SP MLA from Milkipur - Awadhesh Prasad - emerged as a giant killer and defeated BJP candidate and two-term sitting MP Lallu Singh in Faizabad, which comprises of Ayodhya as well, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The sources further said it has been decided in the meeting that keeping in mind the caste equation, new faces will be fielded in all the seats. The notification for the by-elections may be issued by October 20. According to the sources, the UP government and the organisation have assured the Central leadership that BJP will win most of the seats in the by-elections. As per the caste equation, the contest may not be as difficult for the BJP in Milkipur, Katehari, Majhawan, Meerapur, Ghaziabad, and Khair as in SPs traditional seats Karhal (Mainpuri) and Muslim-dominated Kundarki (Moradabad) and Sisamau (Kanpur) seats. Of the 10 assembly seats up for grabs in bypoll, five Katehari, Karhal, Kundarki, Milkipur and Sisamu - have been vacated by the Samajwadi Partys sitting MLAs. BJP had three seatsGhaziabad, Khair and Phulpur. Majhawan was with BJP ally NISHAD and Meerapur was with RLD. Recently, the Samajwadi Party had announced six candidates for Karhal, Phulpur in Prayagraj, Katehari in Ambedkar Nagar, Majhwan in Mirzapur, Milkipur in Ayodhya, and Sisamau seat of Kanpur. Congress sees 'possibilities' on seat sharing after ally SP names candidates for UP Bypolls
LUCKNOW: Congress strategists on Sunday said discussions on ticket distribution are ongoing with the Samajwadi Party and there are possibilities ahead, days after its ally declared candidates for six of the 10 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats where bypolls are scheduled. The SP had announced candidates for six of the 10 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats after the Congress lost the assembly polls in Haryana. The Congress has been demanding five seats in the bypolls for which the schedule is yet to be announced. Congress national general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge, Avinash Pandey told PTI, If the results do not meet our expectations, it is natural for disappointment to arise among our workers and leaders. However, we are committed to our objectives in UP - the era of jungle raj must come to an end. A Congress worker said the loss in Haryana has empowered the SP to declare candidates for six seats in the state. Despite this setback, Pandey emphasised that discussions regarding ticket distribution are ongoing and solutions will be found through timely communication. This is not a major issue. There are still possibilities ahead, he asserted. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress, in alliance with the SP contested 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. The SP won 37 seats, while the Congress managed to secure six, providing a morale boost for a party that had been sidelined in the state for years. With eyes on the 2027 UP assembly polls, the Congress was eager for the upcoming bypolls to test its strategies. State president Ajay Rai even proposed that the Congress contest five of the ten available seats. However, the recent election results in Haryana prompted the SP to assert claims on six seats, including two that the Congress was eyeing. BJP will lose all seats in UP bypolls, face rout in 2027: Akhilesh Yadav On Wednesday, the SP named candidates for the Karhal (Mainpuri), Sisamau (Kanpur Nagar), Milkipur (Ayodhya), Katehari (Ambedkarnagar), Phulpur (Prayagraj), and Majhawan (Mirzapur) seats. Notably, Phulpur and Majhawan were among the five seats the Congress had sought to contest. The SP has yet to announce candidates for the Kundarki, Meerapur, Ghaziabad, and Khair seats. In the 2022 assembly polls, the Ghaziabad seat was won by BJP's Atul Garg by getting 1,50,205 votes while the SP was at number two, the BSP at third and the Congress at fourth. Here the Congress candidate got 11,818 votes while the SP got 44,668 votes. Anoop Valmiki of the BJP won the Khair assembly seat of Aligarh district by getting 1,39,643 votes and against him the BSP was second, RLD third and Congress at fourth place. Here the Congress candidate got only 1,514 votes. Political experts say that in the 2022 elections, the Ghaziabad seat was not favourable for the SP and the Meerapur and Khair seats were given to the ally RLD, so the SP can give these seats to the Congress to save the relationship. Political analysts said the SP might allocate the Meerapur and Khair seats to the Congress to preserve the alliance, as they were less favourable for the SP in the past elections. Our loss in Haryana was due to overconfidence, but in UP, we are actively working on the ground. Together, Congress and the SP will challenge the BJP's dominance and strive for victory, Rai said. He said the shared goal of both parties is to end the BJP's jungle raj and asserted that the people will respond accordingly. Rai said the Congress proposed to contest five seats where the BJP had faltered in 2022, but the SP has now declared candidates for two of those. Both Rai and other Congress leaders emphasised the importance of the alliance with the SP, downplaying ticket distribution concerns for the bypolls. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has echoed this sentiment, affirming that the alliance will remain intact. Pandey said, The current political landscape in UP is complex. While alliances evolve, the challenges posed by the BJP's governance are a collective struggle for all of us. He acknowledged the recent political developments in Haryana as a cautionary signal, underscoring the need for greater diligence in their efforts. The bypolls will be held in Katehari (Ambedkarnagar), Karhal (Mainpuri), Milkipur (Ayodhya), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Sisamau (Kanpur Nagar), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj), and Kundarki (Moradabad). The Sisamau seat has become vacant following the conviction of SP MLA Irfan Solanki, while the others are unoccupied due to resignations from MLAs who were elected to Parliament. The election schedule for the bypolls is yet to be announced. In the 2022 UP assembly elections, the SP secured victories in Sisamau, Katehari, Karhal, Milkipur, and Kundarki, while the BJP won in Phulpur, Ghaziabad, and Khair, with the Nishad Party winning in Majhawan. The Meerapur seat was held by the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), a former ally of the SP.
Key INDIA bloc member Samajwadi Party names candidates for UP assembly bypolls after Haryana verdict
LUCKNOW: A day after the Haryana poll outcome, a prominent member of the INDIA bloc -- Samajwadi Party rushed with the announcement of party candidates for six of the 10 seats going to bypoll in the state later this year. Interestingly, the SP leadership announced the candidates for those seats which were being demanded by ally Congress. The SP move puts the prospects of the Congress party of contesting on five of the 10 seats in alliance with SP in limbo. Meanwhile, the Congress party was taken aback by the SP move saying that it was not consulted on the issue. For the bypolls on 10 assembly seats in UP, the Congress had put forth its demand for five seats. Now on Wednesday SP named candidates for six assembly seats including Phulpur that was assumed to be earmarked for Congress. SP has fielded Mujtaba Siddiqui on the seat. The list of candidates declared by SP includes names of Tej Pratap Yadav as a candidate from Karhal - the assembly seats vacated by Akhilesh Yadav after he was elected MP from Kannauj. Tej Pratap is Akhileshs nephew and son-in-law of Lalu Prasad Yadav. Sitting Ayodhya MP Awadhesh Prasad's son Ajit Prasad is the party's pick for the Milkipur seat as a replacement for his father. Ajit Prasad has recently landed in a soup after Ayodhya police lodged a kidnapping case against him based on a complaint from a local resident Ravi Tiwari. From Sisamau in Kanpur, SP has sown confidence in Naseem Solanki, wife of jailed and disqualified Sisamu MLA Ifran Solanki. Others on the list include Shobhawati Verma from Katehri and Jyoti Bind from Majhawan. As per the buzz around, SP was thinking of sparing Phulpur, Ghaziabad and Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar) seats for the Congress. However, with SP having declared its candidate from Phulpur, the Congress can pin its hopes on the remaining two seats.

SC asks IIT Dhanbad to grant admission to Dalit youth who lost seat for not depositing fees
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday came to the rescue of a Dalit youth, who had lost his seat in IIT Dhanbad after missing the deadline to deposit a fee, by asking the institute to admit him to the BTech course. We cannot allow such a young talented boy to go away. He cannot be left in lurch, a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said. The top court used its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution in asking the IIT Dhanbad to admit Atul Kumar into its Electrical Engineering BTech course. We are of the view that a talented student like the petitioner who belongs to a marginalised group who did all to secure admission should not be left out...we direct that candidate is granted admission to IIT Dhanbad and let him be in the same batch to which he would have been granted admission if the fees would have been paid, the bench said in the order. Article 142 of the Constitution empowers the top court to pass any order in the interest of justice. The parents of Atul Kumar, 18, failed to deposit Rs 17,500 as the acceptance fee by June 24, the deadline for depositing the requisite fees for blocking the seat. The parents of the youth also approached the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Jharkhand Legal Services Authority and the Madras High Court to save the hard-earned seat. Kumar, the son of a daily wager, hails from a below poverty line (BPL) family living at Titora village in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes also expressed its inability to help him. As he had taken JEE at a centre in Jharkhand, the youth had also moved the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority which suggested him to approach the Madras High Court as it was IIT Madras that had conducted the exam. The high court had asked him to approach the top court.

mayawati-wades-into-row-over-food-adulteration-asks-who-is-the-real-criminal
Bahujan Samaj Party chairperson Mayawati waded into the controversy about 'adulterated' food saying that the government was trying to do politics out of it when there were already strict laws to deal with the same. On Thursday morning Mayawati took to X to post: people are agitated by the news about the adulteration of the prasadam at Tirupati and there is politics going on around it. Who is the real criminal behind the dirty game of playing politics under the garb of religion? This is the latest in a string of responses to the UP governments strong stance against food adulteration. The government has said that there will be a time-bound verification of all employees at eateries, restaurants, dhabas besides a prominent display of names and addresses of proprietors and owners. Mayawati posted, There are strict laws about adulterationyet because of the governments negligence/complicities adulteration is rampantby forcing people to put up their names on shops will the black market of adulteration be wiped out Former BJP MLA Vikram Saini meanwhile called upon people to take action against those making food impure. This comes when a viral video that allegedly shows a juice seller spitting into it has gone viral. This video is purportedly from Ghaziabad. Do not depend on the police. People should come forward on their own and hit such people with shoes, said Saini in Muzaffarnagar. This is not just the polices duty. This is something that society should address as a whole. Such people should not be spared. If someone mixes something dirty in juice the juice is drunk by Hindusand by Muslims, said Saini. Sainis statement should be viewed against the backdrop that he is trying to get a ticket for his son from the Mirapur Vidhan Sabha seat in Muzaffarnagar. This is one of the 10 seats on which polls are to be held soon. He has qualified his statement saying that he fully supports Yogi Adityanaths strict stance towards those who attempt to serve impure or adulterated food items. Muzaffarnagar though is a seat that might be given to the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) which is in alliance with the BJP. Saini said, Even if the seat goes to the RLD I will support the candidate.

UP Congress seeks five out of ten by-poll seats to contest
LUCKNOW: Seeking five of the ten seats slated to go to by-poll in Uttar Pradesh anytime soon, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) has got active on the ground sending party secretaries to various constituencies to get feedback about the political situation. The party has also mandated the office bearers visiting the by-poll seats to suggest names of possible candidates amid reports that the grand old party and the Samajwadi Party are holding deliberations for seat-sharing for the by-poll in the coming months. The notification for by-poll to ten Uttar Pradesh assembly segments is yet to be notified. The by-poll has been necessitated by the victory of the sitting MLAs in recent Lok Sabha polls. As per the sources, while the Congress has sought five out of ten seats, the Samajwadi Party appears willing to offer only two out of ten seats. Notably of the ten seats, while the ruling BJP had three, its allies NISHAD and RLD had one each, and the SP had five seats prior to Lok Sabha polls. As per the UPCC insiders, All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Pradeep Narwal, along with party MP Imran Masood, visited Meerapur assembly constituency in Muzaffarnagar district on Monday. Masood has been appointed in-charge of the Meerapur assembly seat up for grabs. It was held by Rashtriya lok Dal MLA Chandan Chauhan who got elected to Lok Sabha from Bijnor. Narwal is set to visit Ghaziabad later this week. Similarly, AICC secretary Satyanarayan Patel is set to visit Katehri (Ambedkar Nagar) and Milkipur (Ayodhya) assembly constituencies while AICC secretary Rajendra Tiwari is being sent to Majhawan (Mirzapur) and Phoolpur (Prayagraj). The Congress leaders would also visit Karhal (Mainpuri), Sishamau (Kanpur Nagar), Khair (Aligarh) and Kundarki (Moradabad) constituencies to ascertain the ground situation. The upcoming visits of AICC secretaries to ten assembly seats have nothing to do with seat -sharing. We have conveyed our intent to contest five out of ten seats. The final call rests with party high command. We will contest the polls in alliance with the Samajwadi Party and the seat-sharing is yet to be given a final shape, said Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajay Rai. While the by-elections to nine of the ten seats have been necessitated following the election of sitting MLAs to Lok Sabha, the poll to Sisamau assembly seat in Kanpur has been caused following the disqualification of sitting Samajwadi Party MLA Hazi Irfan Solanki who has been awarded seven-year imprisonment in a criminal case by the Kanpur MP/MLA court.
