BAREILLY: An alleged attempt to derail the Tanakpur-Bareilly passenger train near Dohna station in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly was foiled due to the alertness of the train's loco pilot, officials said on Monday. The train was safely halted and no injuries were reported. According to officials, unknown miscreants stuffed stones into the railway switch (track scissors) and placed large iron angles on the track near Dohna with the apparent intent to destabilise the train and cause a derailment. The incident occurred at around 11:58 pm on Sunday when train number 05307, which departs Tanakpur at 9:30 pm and is scheduled to arrive at Bareilly Junction at 12:55 am, was passing through the area, they said. Railway authorities have increased security and intensified track patrolling across the region. Asiatic lion Pataudi dies at Kanpur zoo amid bird flu scare; samples sent to NIHSAD for testing
LUCKNOW: Amid the growing threat of avian influenza, or bird flu, an Asiatic lion Pataudi died at the Kanpur zoo on Thursday morning, days after being brought in for treatment following the death of a tigress Shakti from the virus. Pataudi was brought to Kanpur zoo from Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park in Gorakhpur on May 11. Meanwhile, the Kanpur Zoo authorities sent the visceral samples of the feline to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal for testing. The state wildlife authorities had already shut the three zoos, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Gorakhpur, along with the Etawah Lion Safari till May 20 as a precautionary measure amid the bird flu scare. Moreover, additional samples from animals have been collected and sent for testing. As per informed sources, Pataudi, aged 15, was brought to Etawah Lion Safari from Junagarh in Gujarat in September 2019. After spending two years at the safari, he was relocated to Gorakhpur Zoo in 2021. The wildlife authorities claimed that the lion was undergoing treatment for pancreatic and hepatic infections. For the last two days, the feline had stopped consuming food and was surviving only on water. He was administered intravenous medication, and a thorough examination was conducted by veterinary doctors on Wednesday. Pataudi was quarantined on suspicion of bird flu, and the Kanpur Zoo authorities have been ensuring continuous sanitisation of the entire premises. According to Dr. Nasir, who led a team of four veterinary doctors from the state animal husbandry department, Pataudi had consumed about a kilogram of chicken upon his arrival at Kanpur Zoo on May 11. However, he stopped eating anything from Tuesday onwards. While the Kanpur Zoo authorities are awaiting Pataudis test reports, veterinary experts from Bareillys Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) have expressed concerns that he might have contracted bird flu. His remains will be cremated following safety norms after final confirmation from the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal. Kanpur Zoo ranger Naved Ikram stated that all other animals were currently healthy and under strict veterinary observation. He added that everyone entering the wildlife enclosures had been instructed to wear PPE kits as a preventive measure
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Police continue their relentless crackdown on individuals posting pro-Pakistan content on social media platforms during Operation Sindoor . As per the police sources, 30 persons across 18 districts have been arrested by the authorities so far for their anti-India and pro-Pakistan posts on social media during the military operation by India in retaliation to Pahalgam terror killings . The police sources claim that, abiding by the directives of UP DGP Prashant Kumar, special team of social media cell of police headquarters has been running a relentless campaign lodging cases against such pro-Pakistan elements in Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Lakhimpur Kheri, Baghpat and many more districts across the state for making objectionable posts and comments on social media. The police authorities are also tracing those who, fearing the police action, deleted their social media accounts after making incendiary comments against India during Operation Sindoor, says a senior police officer. Police have initiated legal action against an account spreading false rumors on social media claiming that 40 people had died in a bomb blast in Gorakhpur during Operation Sindoor. The post was traced to an account under the name of Shalu Tripathi. Similarly, Bareillys Fareedpur resident, Faqruddin, was held for making objectionable posts on Facebook. In Lakhimpur Kheri Sameer Ali and Abdul Ashiq were held for shouting slogan Pakistan Zindabad and writing pro-Pakistan posts on social media. In Baghpat, the district police authorities have booked Usman Zahid for putting anti-India content on social media and a team of cops is out to nab him. The police authorities claim that the action is being taken not only against those who posted objectionable content on social media but also those anti-social elements who commented on such objectionable posts and shared them as well. The police authorities are also suspecting the role of toolkit behind such posts and a thorough investigation is on. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh Textile Industry Traders Association has given a call to boycott textiles imported from China and Turkiye as both the countries supported Pakistan openly during the recent military face-off between the two neighbours in the aftermath of Pahalgam terror killings. As per the Association sources, a delegation would soon meet Raskha Mantri Rajnath Singh seeking a ban on the textile trade with China and Turkiye. Associations president Ashok Motiyani said that Indian traders import textile from China and Turkiye substantially giving a respectable chunk of revenue to the two terror-supporting countries. As Turkiye and China are openly siding with the enemy country, there is no need to have trade relations with them, says Anil Bajaj, the general secretary of the Association. The scale of textile trade with the two countries could be assessed from the fact that in Lucknow only, the textile traders do a business worth Rs 200 crore per month by importing clothes from Turkiye and China.
Bird flu scare: Death of a tigress lead to closure of zoos in Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The death of a tigress in Gorakhpur zoo led to the closure of Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur zoos along with Etawah Lion Safari for a week on Tuesday evening following the bird flu scare in the state zoos. The decision to shut the zoos came after the death of a tigress Shakti at the Gorakhpur zoo as bird flu was confirmed as the cause of the death of feline. Meanwhile, all the Tiger reserves, including Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Lakhimpur Kheri, Amangarh Tiger Reserve in Bijnore, Ranipur Tiger Reserve in Chitrakoot and Suhelva Tiger Reserve in Balrampur, in the state have been directed to be on high alert. The wildlife authorities got alerted after the death of tigress Shakti at Gorakhpur zoo on May 7. Its viscera samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, which confirmed bird flu as the cause of death on Tuesday. The tigress, Shakti, was over two years old and was brought to Gorakhpur after her rescue from Lakhimpur Kheris Mailani in May, 2024. Also, the viscera examination of the tigress by NIHSAD confirmed the presence of a rare Vibrio bacterial infection. This bacterium, typically found in aquatic life including fish and seabirds, is a potential risk of spreading H5N1 (avian influenza) through direct contact. Infection in several big cat species, including tigers, leopards, and others is common as they feed on infected poultry carcasses. Cats are also prone to infection because of their risk of exposure to poultry or wild birds, say the wild life experts. Moreover, female wolf Bhairavi also succumbed at the Gorakhpur zoo and its viscera samples were sent to IVRI Bareilly. Bhairavi's results are awaited. Meanwhile, a sick tiger named Pataudi was recently transferred to the Kanpur zoo, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus there. The monitoring of all animals in the zoo is being done. They are being checked for symptoms of bird flu or other illnesses. Keepers have been made aware of the symptoms, said the senior forest official. According to Anuradha Vemuri, the principal chief conservator of forest-Wildlife (PCCF-Wildlife), the highest protocol was already in place. The zoos in Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur districts and the lion safari in Etawah shall remain closed for a week, she said. In a late Tuesday evening message to the staff of tiger reserves, senior forest officials asked them to keep a watch on the behaviour of animals on their premises and report if any of them fell sick or died. Meanwhile, Chief minister Yogi Adityanath, taking cognizance of the scare, directed the wildlife authorities to enforce maximum vigilance in all zoos in Uttar Pradesh to check the spread of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu). As per an official statement, the CM chaired a high-level meeting saying the safety of protected animals and birds in zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetland areas and cow shelters must be treated as the topmost priority. He instructed officials to take all necessary preventive measures promptly and strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by both the central and state governments to curb the possible spread of the infection. As a preventive strategy, Yogi ordered regular sanitization of zoo premises and the use of blow torching where needed. He also emphasized mandatory health screenings of all wild animals and birds, along with strict inspection of their food to prevent any contamination. The CM directed that all zoo staff be fully aware about avian influenza and equipped with PPE kits and other essential safety gear. He further said that staff duties within enclosures be assigned according to the level of associated risk. He called for strict monitoring of all poultry farms in line with safety protocols and tight control over the movement of poultry products. He directed the health department to assess the potential impact of bird flu on humans to prevent any risk of transmission to the public. The CM said that zoo authorities should be in regular contact with institutions like the Central Zoo Authority, National Centre for Disease Control, ministry of health, department of fisheries and dairy, and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, to seek advice and implement necessary action accordingly. At the same time, Gorakhpur health officials had collected blood samples from over 100 staff members of the Zoo, especially, those who were in touch with the Tigress Shakti. Their reports are expected by Wednesday, said Dr Yogesh Singh, the veterinary doctor at the Gorakhpur Zoo. He added that the entire zoo premises was sanitized. Dr Singh maintained that all animals, approximately 300 in number, present in Gorakhpur Zoo, were healthy and showed no signs of infection during their examination conducted on Tuesday.

Civil defence volunteers rehearse emergency response in Lucknow ahead of nationwide mock drill
LUCKNOW: A day before the scheduled mock drill mandated by the Union government, civil defence volunteers conducted a rehearsal at the Lucknow police lines on Tuesday to strengthen emergency preparedness. Meanwhile, UP DGP Prashant Kumar, on Tuesday, said that comprehensive civil defence mock drills would be conducted across all districts on Wednesday in compliance of the instructions received from the Government of India. The exercise, which involved around 200 civil defence volunteers, was aimed at training volunteers in managing large-scale emergencies and responding effectively to potential missile or air attacks. According to Chief Warden, Civil Defence Lucknow, Amarnath Mishra, the participants demonstrated coordinated responses to sirens, evacuation procedures, and protective measures designed to minimise panic and chaos during emergencies. The drill focused on practical techniques to protect civilians during missile strikes and air attacks, along with educating the public on how to safeguard themselves in such situations, Mishra added. The development comes a day after the Union Home Ministry's directives to states to conduct mock drills on May 7 to enhance civil defence preparedness. The Union Home Ministry asked the states to operationalise air raid warning sirens and train civilians to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack. The states have also been directed to update and rehearse evacuation plans, crash blackout measures, and early camouflaging of vital plants and installations. Interacting with media persons, the UP DGP Prashant Kumar said that the Centre had identified 19 districts-- one placed in Category 1, two in Category 2 and the remaining 16 in Category 3-- for the exercise. Bulandshahr in western UP has been kept in Category 1; Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bakshi Ka Talab, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Bareilly, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Saharanpur, Sarsawan, and Chandauli are there in Category 2; Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar, both western UP districts, have been kept in Category 3. However, keeping the preparedness in mind and also considering the local sensitivities, the state government has decided to conduct the mock drill across all the state districts, said the DGP. He explained that the exercise would involve coordinated participation from multiple agencies, including the police administration, fire services, and disaster response agencies, to cope with disasters and other critical situations. The mock drill is imperative to ensure better coordination and readiness among all response agencies, said Prashant Kumar. Meanwhile, DG Civil Defence, Abhay Prasad also confirmed the instructions received from the Centre, explaining preparations were already underway to equip civilians with the knowledge and readiness needed in case of any future conflict. He said the mock drill would be conducted between 7 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday. At present, the state Civil Defence department has offices in 15 districts but covers 26 districts through its network. As part of the initiative, an assessment of emergency medical infrastructure, response time, and coordination between various agencies would be assessed in the event of mass casualties and large-scale evacuations. The drill would also foster greater public awareness and resilience in times of national crisis, said a senior state government official.

BAREILLY: All India Muslim Jamaat president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi has issued a fatwa against Tamil Nadu's actor-turned-politician Vijay, the President of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Razvi Bareilvi criticised Vijay for allegedly portraying Muslims negatively in his movies and for inviting individuals involved in gambling and liquor consumption to his Iftar party. He (Vijay) has formed a political party and maintained cordial relations with Muslims. However, he has portrayed Muslims in a negative way as those who spread terrorism in his films. Gamblers and liquor consumers were invited to his Iftar party, Maulana Razvi Bareilvi said. Due to all this, Sunni Muslims of Tamil Nadu are angry with him. They asked for a fatwa. So, in my answer, I have issued a fatwa mentioning that Muslims should not stand with Vijay, he added. #WATCH | Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh | On Fatwa against TVK President Vijay, President of All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi says, ...He has formed a political party and maintained cordial relations with Muslims. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard a batch of petitions challenging the Constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The Supreme Court indicated that it may pass an interim order to stay certain key provisions of the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, and also expressed concern over violence in West Bengal's Murshidabad district. A three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan said, The one thing that is very disturbing is the violence that is taking place. The issue is before the court, and we will decide. The bench didn't pass any order but suggested that certain provisions may stay, including the inclusion of non-Muslims in Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards, powers of collectors in deciding disputes over Waqf properties and provisions on de-notifying properties declared as waqf by courts. During the hearing, the bench said that it is considering passing an interim order which will balance equities. We will say - Whichever properties were declared by a court to be Waqf will not be de-notified or be treated as non-Waqf, whether it is Waqf by user or not. Second, the Collector can continue with the proceedings, but the proviso will not be given effect. Third, regarding Waqf Boards and Council... ex officio members can be appointed, but the other members have to be Muslims, said the bench. CJI Khanna was about to dictate the order, but Solicitor General Tushar Mehta representing Centre and other counsels who were appearing for parties defending the Act said they should be heard before passing the interim order.

Vigilance inquiry launched against suspended Invest UP CEO as ED, I-T investigations continue
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh vigilance department has initiated a confidential probe against suspended IAS officer Abhishek Prakash, who previously served as the CEO of Invest UP, following allegations of corruption. The inquiry, launched on Wednesday on the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, will scrutinise his entire tenure, examining his movable and immovable assets. Prakash, a 2006-batch IAS officer, was suspended on 20 March after accusations of irregularities in the evaluation process for a proposed solar manufacturing project. His suspension followed a complaint by an employee of a solar and renewable energy firm, who alleged that Prakash demanded a five per cent commission for project approval. The complainant claimed that the officer directed him to contact Nikant Jain, who allegedly facilitated deals between the IAS officer and investors. The complaint, addressed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, triggered immediate action, leading to Jain's arrest and Prakash's suspension. Following this, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a probe into the alleged corruption, and now the income tax department is also preparing to investigate his financial dealings. 189 mosques in UP covered with tarpaulin on Holi eve as police tighten security
LUCKNOW: With Holi falling on Friday during the holy month of Ramzan and prominent Muslim clerics of Uttar Pradesh having already revised the timings for Friday prayers, postponing them after 2 pm, 189 mosques in at least four districts of the state were covered with tarpaulin ahead of the festival of colours. While Muslim clerics have adjusted the timing of Friday prayers across 18 districts of the state on Holi day, mosques in Bareilly, Sambhal, Shahjahanpur, and Aligarh in central-western UP were covered with tarpaulin to protect them from the splash of Holi colors. For the sake of maintaining peace, UP DGP Prashant Kumar sent a letter to all the district police chiefs, commissionerates, and heads of police zones and ranges with a 20-point directive to fortify the sensitive zones in their respective districts with adequate deployment of police and paramilitary forces. Besides holding direct interactions with top police officers of the state, the DGP personally met senior officers of sensitive districts and discussed police arrangement for the festival. In the hyper-sensitive Sambhal district, where Shahi Jama Masjid has been caught in a litigation for the past few months over the court-ordered survey, several mosques along with the Jama Masjid were already covered with tarpaulin sheets on Wednesday. As per the senior police officer of the district, additional paramilitary force for round-the-clock monitoring and vigilance were deployed in the town. In Sambhal, the Friday Namaz would be held at 2.30 pm due to Holi celebrations. Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid management committee chief Zafar Ali urged members of both communities to celebrate Holi and offer Friday prayers in a harmonious atmosphere. Regarding the administrations move to cover mosques with tarpaulin, Ali welcomed the decision, stating that it was a positive step. Maximum mosques 109-- were covered with tarpaulin in Bareilly where a Ram Barat was taken out on Holi eve with strict vigilance and deployment of over 5000 police personnel on all the mosques falling in the route of the Barat. In Shahjahanpur, 67 mosques were covered before the traditional Laat Sahab Juloos on Holi. Shahjahanpur is the only district where there is a tradition of playing Joota Maar Holi (playing Holi using shoes/slippers). A person is made to sit on a buffalo cart as laat sahab and is made to take the rounds of the city with people throwing colours, shoes and slippers at him. A senior officer, who is a part of the team monitoring security arrangements at DGP headquarters, said senior officers would escort the traditional procession of Laat Sahab. Around 1000 additional cops were called in from other districts for deployment at sensitive spots. The police contingent carried out a flag march on Holi eve in the district. Similarly, 10 mosques in Sambhal and three in Aligarh were also covered. The drone-equipped vigilance is on across the sensitive districts of the state. Barricades have been erected along the routes of Holi processions with the installation of several CCTV cameras by the respective local administration. As per Shahajhanpur SP Rajesh S, in all 18 Holi processions including the two major Laat Saheb processions, are taken put in the city. To ensure security, the larger procession was divided into three zones and eight sectors, with around 100 magistrates deployed. Moreover, police have taken preventive action against 2,423 people to deter potential troublemakers, he said. Similarly, in other districts including Mathura, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Rampur, Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Gonda, Bahraich and Siddharthnagar, additional paramilitary forces have been deployed to avert any untoward incident. DGP Prashant Kumar said that officers were instructed to ensure that no group was allowed to perform any act or hold untraditional processions.

Lucknow, Sambhal clerics adjust Juma Namaz timings for Holi as festival falls on Friday
With Holi falling on Friday, March 14, Muslim clerics in Lucknow, including the Imam of Lucknow Eidgah, have advised mosques to hold Juma Namaz at 2 pm instead of the usual 12 noon. The Eidgah Imam also urged worshippers to offer prayers at their local mosques rather than travelling to distant ones. The advisory was issued by Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, chairman of the Islamic Centre of India and an executive member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). He noted that since Holi celebrations with colours continue until 1 pm, it would be appropriate to schedule Juma Namaz later in the afternoon. Namaz at Jama Masjid Eidgah in Lucknow will also be held at 2 pm instead of 12:45 pm on March 14. In Sambhal, it was decided that Hindus will celebrate Holi until 2:30 pm, after which Muslims will offer Juma Namaz. Senior police officials confirmed that seven companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed in the city to ensure peace during the festival. The decision follows a controversy sparked by a Sambhal circle officers remarks suggesting that those uncomfortable with Holi colors should stay indoors , as the festival occurs once a year, while Juma Namaz is held 52 times annually. However, peace committee meetings in the district resulted in an agreement between communities to celebrate the festivals harmoniously. On the peace committee discussions, the Sambhal SP said that talks were held with key people from both sides at the district level, leading to an agreement that Holi celebrations would conclude by 2:30 pm, followed by Juma Namaz. Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya stated that the city has been divided into six zones and 29 sectors, with magistrates deployed across all areas to maintain order. When questioned about the possibility of covering mosques with tarpaulin, Pensiya clarified that the decision rests with the local communities. He emphasized that both groups have agreed to celebrate their respective festivals with harmony and mutual respect. Meanwhile, in Bareilly, Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, urged imams to schedule Juma Namaz at 2:30 pm in areas with mixed populations. However, he noted that in predominantly Muslim localities, the prayer timing could remain unchanged. He also advised Muslims to limit outdoor activities for 3-4 hours during Holi and exercise caution when stepping out for essential tasks. Maulana Razvi further urged the community to observe the holy month of Ramzan with patience and discipline, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding unnecessary confrontations during the festival.

Messages about the huge sales will be conveyed to the inmates to encourage them to stay connected with society, an officer added.
