Civil defence volunteers rehearse emergency response in Lucknow ahead of nationwide mock drill
LUCKNOW: A day before the scheduled mock drill mandated by the Union government, civil defence volunteers conducted a rehearsal at the Lucknow police lines on Tuesday to strengthen emergency preparedness. Meanwhile, UP DGP Prashant Kumar, on Tuesday, said that comprehensive civil defence mock drills would be conducted across all districts on Wednesday in compliance of the instructions received from the Government of India. The exercise, which involved around 200 civil defence volunteers, was aimed at training volunteers in managing large-scale emergencies and responding effectively to potential missile or air attacks. According to Chief Warden, Civil Defence Lucknow, Amarnath Mishra, the participants demonstrated coordinated responses to sirens, evacuation procedures, and protective measures designed to minimise panic and chaos during emergencies. The drill focused on practical techniques to protect civilians during missile strikes and air attacks, along with educating the public on how to safeguard themselves in such situations, Mishra added. The development comes a day after the Union Home Ministry's directives to states to conduct mock drills on May 7 to enhance civil defence preparedness. The Union Home Ministry asked the states to operationalise air raid warning sirens and train civilians to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack. The states have also been directed to update and rehearse evacuation plans, crash blackout measures, and early camouflaging of vital plants and installations. Interacting with media persons, the UP DGP Prashant Kumar said that the Centre had identified 19 districts-- one placed in Category 1, two in Category 2 and the remaining 16 in Category 3-- for the exercise. Bulandshahr in western UP has been kept in Category 1; Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bakshi Ka Talab, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Bareilly, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Saharanpur, Sarsawan, and Chandauli are there in Category 2; Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar, both western UP districts, have been kept in Category 3. However, keeping the preparedness in mind and also considering the local sensitivities, the state government has decided to conduct the mock drill across all the state districts, said the DGP. He explained that the exercise would involve coordinated participation from multiple agencies, including the police administration, fire services, and disaster response agencies, to cope with disasters and other critical situations. The mock drill is imperative to ensure better coordination and readiness among all response agencies, said Prashant Kumar. Meanwhile, DG Civil Defence, Abhay Prasad also confirmed the instructions received from the Centre, explaining preparations were already underway to equip civilians with the knowledge and readiness needed in case of any future conflict. He said the mock drill would be conducted between 7 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday. At present, the state Civil Defence department has offices in 15 districts but covers 26 districts through its network. As part of the initiative, an assessment of emergency medical infrastructure, response time, and coordination between various agencies would be assessed in the event of mass casualties and large-scale evacuations. The drill would also foster greater public awareness and resilience in times of national crisis, said a senior state government official.

GORAKHPUR: A woman allegedly facing continuous harassment for dowry by her in-laws died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur after getting a phone call from her husband who gave her 'triple talaq', police said on Thursday. Police suspended a sub-inspector and ordered a departmental inquiry for failing to lodge a case on a complaint regarding dowry harassment, they said. Saniya allegedly ended her life after a call from her husband -- who lives in Maharashtra -- on Monday evening. She returned to her maternal home in Gorakhpur on April 26. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Grover suspended Sub-Inspector Jay Prakash Singh for failing to act on an earlier complaint lodged by the victims family. According to police officials, Saniyas mother, Asiya, had approached the Chauri Chaura police station alleging dowry harassment by her in-laws. SI Singh allegedly dismissed the complaint and refused to register a case. An internal inquiry led by Additional SP North Jitendra Kumar Srivastava later confirmed that Saniya had indeed visited the station, but no case was filed. Taking serious note of the lapse, the SSP ordered a departmental inquiry and placed the officer under suspension. An FIR has been lodged against eight persons, including Saniya's husband Salauddin, who is a resident of Maharashtras Rasayani area. The FIR states that Salauddin pronounced triple talaq over a phone call on Monday evening and allegedly abused Saniya during the call. Distressed by the incident, she took her own life later that night, it said. The complainant said her daughter married Salauddin on August 7, 2023, and a dowry was given as per the family's demands. However, Saniya was allegedly subjected to repeated harassment by her husband, his mother Saira, sisters-in-law Aasiya, Khushboo, and Rozi, and brothers-in-law Zia-ul-Auddin and Balauddin. Despite several attempts to resolve the matter, the harassment continued, she said. Salauddin had at one point arranged a separate accommodation for Saniya but later abandoned her. She returned to her maternal home in Gorakhpur on April 26, the complaint said. Asiya added that Saniya continued to messages through her younger sisters phone. Unable to cope with the mental trauma, Saniya took the extreme step, she said. Police said a detailed probe is underway in the matter.

Despite high demand, intense heat hits lemon yield in erstwhile Nellore district
NELLORE: While soaring temperature across North India has sharply increased the demand for lemon, farmers and traders in the erstwhile undivided Nellore district are grappling with a significant decline in the crop yield. In the first week of April, lemon prices peaked at Rs 60,000 per tonne, typically considered lucrative for growers. Everyday, more than 20 truckloads of lemons are being exported on an average from major markets like Podalakur and Gudur, with similar shipments flowing from Tenali, Eluru and Rajahmundry markets, along with various small markets in Rayalaseema region. However, market sources reveal that lemon exports have drastically come down over the past few days. Farmers attribute the dip to decline in the crop yield, and the impact of intense summer heat. The temperature is unusually high this season, and lemon trees have not borne fruit as expected. Though the demand, especially from Delhi and other northern cities, is strong, the supply cannot keep up, said S Raju, a farmer associated with Gudur lemon market. Earlier, nearly 100 truckloads of lemon were exported daily from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Now, its down to about 50 truckloads, said Narayana, a trader at Podalakur market. The lemon yield has dropped mainly because of the intense summer heat, he said. Lemon from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka is primarily exported to major northern markets, including Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Mathura, Gorakhpur and Prayagraj, where the fruit is mainly used for preparation of cold beverages to beat the heat. Despite the region suffering from severe drought conditions, lemon farmers have managed to salvage a reasonably good yield this year. However, the intense heatwave has curtailed the overall output, leading to a supply-demand imbalance. Cultivation of lemon spans nearly 43,000 acres across the district, with four major markets in Nellore region - Podalakur, Venkatagiri, Jayampu and Gudur - forming the hub of lemon trade.About 15-20 trucks, each carrying nearly 20 tonnes of lemons, leave these markets daily for other States. Usually, lemon prices start declining towards the end of June as new crop arrivals begin. This year, however, the prices have held steady due to low supply, Suresh, another farmer, explained. Even though the demand is excellent, especially from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, farmers are unable to fully capitalise on it because the lemon fruit arrivals are much lower than usual.

Two killed, 15 injured as bus hits stationary truck in UP's Basti
BASTI: Two people were killed and 15 others injured when a double-decker bus hit a stationary truck on the National Highway 28 in Basti district late last night, police said on Saturday. According to police, the incident occurred near the Vikramjot crossing in the Chhawani Police Station area around midnight. Police said the speeding double-decker bus (registration number RJ 27 AP 9558) travelling from Gorakhpur to Lucknow rammed into the rear side of the truck parked on the roadside at the Vikramjot crossing by its driver after its broke down. The bus hit the truck with such force that the bus' front portion was badly mangled, and two people died while several passengers received serious injuries, the police said. The truck, coming from the Gorakhpur side, developed some fault after which the driver parked it on the roadside near a shop, owned by Santosh Kumar. The Police said the impact of the crash was so intense that passengers were thrown about inside the bus, and some suffered multiple injuries. The local police, led by Vikramjot outpost in-charge Ritesh Singh, rushed to the spot and took the injured to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Vikramjot. Fourteen people, including children and elderly passengers from Bihar and Rajasthan, were reported injured in the crash. Among the injured were residents of Gopalganj, Siwan, Motihari, and other districts of Bihar, as well as a few from Rajasthan. Many had sustained severe injuries and were later referred to the Medical College in Darshan Nagar, Ayodhya, for further treatment. Seven of them are said to be in critical condition, the police said. Police confirmed that two people died on the spot due to the impact, though their identities have yet to be established. Authorities said they are continuing with further legal proceedings in the case.
NIA court sentences Maoist operative to nine years in jail for carrying out anti-national activities
LUCKNOW: A special NIA court sentenced Rajendra Munda, an active member of banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), to nine years of imprisonment for conspiring against the nation and attempting to disrupt India's unity, integrity, and sovereignty here on late Thursday. Moreover, Special NIA court Judge Hussain Ahmad Ansari also imposed a fine of Rs 43,000 on the convict. As per Government Counsel MK Singh, Rajendra Mundas conviction was done under Sections 121 A (conspiracy) of IPC and different sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). According to the government counsel, the case dates back to 2010 when multiple members of the banned Maoist outfit and its frontal organisations were arrested in Gorakhpur, Kanpur, and Prayagraj. Several others, however, managed to escape, prompting the authorities to keep a close watch on absconding accused. According to officials, Munda was attempting to meet his sister Hiramani Munda alias Asha, a fellow Maoist operative who was arrested and lodged in Gorakhpur jail. On receiving intelligence inputs, the UP Special Task Force (STF), apprehended Rajendra Munda near Shani Mandir on Station Road in Gorakhpur. Munda was arrested with Maoist literature and anti-national propaganda material. As per the sources, during the interrogation, Munda disclosed that Asha and her husband Balraj alias Baccha Prasad Singh both arrested from Kanpur were associated with the Maoist organisation. He admitted to aiding them in organisational activities and said he was planning to visit Asha in jail before fleeing to Bihar. Munda also revealed that he was inducted into the outfit about one-and-a-half years ago through his sister Asha.
Six dead as sudden rain, thunderstorm hit UP; CM calls for survey on crop losses
LUCKNOW: Six lives were lost due to a lightning strike as the weather took a turn resulting in a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds with hail storm at certain places across UP on Thursday. Though people got some relief from sweltering heat wave like conditions, farmers suffered losses due to damage to standing and harvested crops in the fields. As per the IMD sources, such weather conditions are likely to continue for next three days in the state. The skies were shrouded with dark clouds since Thursday morning in state capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, NCR along with 25 cities across the state. The districts of the Terai region, including Bahraich, Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri had a hailstorm followed by heavy rains destroying the standing crop of wheat and mango. Officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the weather took the turn after the Westerly winds from the Arabian Sea and easterly from the Bay of Bengal collided. While the actual assessment of the loss and damage to crops would take time, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a quick survey of the damage to the crops and asked officials to conduct field visits for the same. The CM issued orders for all District Magistrates, SDMs, and Tehsildars to visit the affected areas immediately and carry out a detailed survey so that the compensation against the damages can be disbursed directly to the farmers' accounts within 24 hours. He warned the district administrations against negligence and laxity. Following the survey, compensation for crop losses will be provided by the Revenue Department in collaboration with insurance companies. Additionally, the Relief Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami issued an alert due to the ongoing bad weather urging people to step out of their homes only when absolutely necessary. Moreover, the Relief Commissioner asked the DMs, SDMs and Tehsildars, to upload the field survey reports over damage to the crops on the department's portal as soon as possible. It is important to note that compensation will only be provided to farmers whose crops suffered more than 33 percent damage due to floods, hailstorms, and unseasonal rains. Meanwhile, the mango growers of Lucknows mango belt, Malihabad and adjoining Barabanki sounded concerned for the crop as thunderstorms caused the immature fruit to fall, leading to some losses. However, the rain, mango growers said, would certainly help the fruit increase its size and sweetness. Malihabad produces Dussehri, Langda, Lucknauva Safeda, and Chausa. Dussehri is the earliest ripening variety, followed by Langda, Lucknauva Safeda, and Chausa. At this stage, fruit has formed for every variety, but in different sizes. Since the thrust and speed of wind in Malihabad on Thursday were not very high, the windfall was not expected to be severe.

UP government to develop database of industrial authorities in state
LUCKNOW: In a bid to expedite the process of industrial development by removing bottle necks, the state government is contemplating developing a comprehensive database of all major industrial authorities in Uttar Pradesh. Invest UP, the nodal agency for attracting and tracking investments, is set to create this extensive database to enhance transparency in the land allotment process. As per the official spokesperson, Invest UP would also provide real-time insights into the status of vacant and allotted plots, the establishment of industries, and the implementation progress of various projects across multiple industrial authorities in the state. This initiative would encompass key industrial authorities, including: Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA), Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA), Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA), and Satharia Industrial Development Authority (SIDA), said the official spokesperson. A detailed land bank analysis would be conducted across these authorities. Skilled survey agencies would be appointed to map the occupancy status of allotted plots, track the progress of industrial units, and assess vacant plots, ensuring a data-driven approach to industrial planning and development. The spokespersons said that Invest UP would oversee the entire database creation process to ensure seamless and transparent land allocation. The appointed survey agencies would conduct onsite and offsite monitoring of industrial land, compile detailed reports on unit operations, construction, and development activities on industrial plots, ensure industrial land was used strictly for its intended purpose and report any violations, and facilitate comparative efficiency studies across different authorities, expediting the transparent allotment of vacant industrial plots. The intent to implement the database system is to reinforce Yogi governments commitment to industrial expansion, investment facilitation, and transparent governance, paving the way for UP becoming an industrial hub.
Bugbear for opposition leaders, ex-ED chief Sanjay Mishra now dons new hat as economic advisor
NEW DELHI: A bugbear for many opposition leaders, one of the longest serving Enforcement Directorate (ED) chiefs Sanjay Mishra has been summoned by the government again -- this time as a full-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. Mishra, a 1984-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, excelled in matters relating to income tax. This drew the attention of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who brought him to the ministry as his private secretary soon after the NDA government came to power in 2014. His proximity to Jaitley earned him a position in the all-powerful Enforcement Directorate as its chief. Initially, he was given charge as an interim arrangement for three months in October 2018, but subsequently he was made full-time director. In bureaucratic circles, Mishra is credited with investigating several high-profile income tax cases, while being posted in the Delhi circle. He also held the position of chief commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi before moving to the ED. Mishra hogged the limelight as under him, the ED, which enforces the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), launched an aggressive probe against several high-profile politicians and dignitaries, including the Congress' Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadras husband Robert Vadra. It also initiated action against Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. During his tenure as the ED chief, the agency got approval for the extradition of fugitives such as Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. The agency had also arrested persons accused of money laundering such as former Yes Bank managing director and chief executive officer Rana Kapoor and ICICI Bank former MD-CEO Chanda Kochhars husband Deepak Kochhar under Mishras stewardship. Mishras tenure as the ED chief came to an end in September 2023 after the Supreme Court's intervention. Earlier, in an order issued on November 13, 2020, the government had modified his appointment letter retrospectively and replaced his term with three years. On November 17, 2021, the government again extended his tenure for a period of one year till November 18, 2022. The extension came days after the government introduced an ordinance that allowed the directors of ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to occupy the office for up to five years. On November 18, 2022, the Centre again extended Mishras tenure till November 18, 2023. Soon after the ordinance was brought in, a series of petitions were filed before the Supreme Court by Congress and TMC functionaries like Randeep Singh Surjewala and Saket Gokhale, challenging the amendments. However, the government had told the Supreme Court that it had extended Mishra's tenure in public interest as various cases were at a crucial juncture and required proper and expeditious disposal for which it was necessary to ensure the continuity of officers. It also defended its decision to extend Mishras tenure in the ED on the grounds that India's evaluation by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was still pending. Under the FATF, a countrys systems and processes aimed at combating money laundering and terror financing are evaluated by peer countries for implementation and effectiveness. Born in a middle class family in Lucknow, Mishras first posting was in Gorakhpur as assistant director in the Income Tax department. Besides taxation, he has a keen interest in understanding the nexus between politics and business, as well as matters related to economics and foreign currency.

The announcement of BJPs district presidents comes against the backdrop of the Samajwadi Partys PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) strategy, which is believed to have played a role in reducing the BJPs seat tally from 62 to 33 in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJPs organizational election process began in November 2024. In December, elections were held for 1,62,459 booth committees, followed by the selection of 1,918 mandal presidents. The entire process was monitored online by the partys state general secretary (organization) Dharampal Singh and election in-charge Mahendra Nath Pandey from the BJPs state headquarters in Lucknow. Following the district-level appointments, the party is now expected to proceed with the selection of a new state president.
Those who called Maha Kumbh 'Mrityu Kumbh' unable to control disturbance during Holi: Adityanath
GORAKHPUR: Hitting out at his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee over her remarks criticising Maha Kumbh arrangements, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Sunday those who had said the Maha Kumbh of Prayagraj was a 'Mrityu Kumbh' were unable to control disturbance during Holi. Addressing the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected office bearers of the Gorakhpur Journalists Press Club in Gorakhpur, he said that for the first time, people came to the Maha Kumbh from Tamil Nadu. People (devotees) also came from Kerala. The population of Uttar Pradesh is 25 crores, and the Holi concluded peacefully. But, in West Bengal, a number of disturbances took place during Holi, he said. On the day of Holi, a 20-year-old youth was killed in a scuffle during celebrations in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. Akash Choudhury, alias Amar, was accosted by three to four youths while celebrating Holi with his friends near his residence in Titagarh. As an argument broke out, he was repeatedly stabbed in his neck and other parts of his body by the assailants, the officer added. Holi violence in Uttar Pradesh: Clashes over caste, music, and altercations leave several injured Adityanath took a dig at Banerjee over such incidents in her state. People who were unable to control the disturbance ('upadrav') during Holi, had said that the Maha Kumbh of Prayagraj was a 'Mrityu Kumbh'. But, we said that this is not 'Mrityu' (death), it is 'Mrityunjay' (victory over death) It is a Maha Kumbh. He said that everyday of the Maha Kumbh witnessed 50,000 to 1 lakh people from West Bengal taking part in the 45-day event. Days after the January 29 stampeded at the Sangam Nose, where the official toll was 30, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said the Maha Kumbh has turned into a Mrityu Kumbh due to such incidents of stampede, claiming the actual toll was suppressed by authorities. They have hidden hundreds of bodies to bring down the toll. The Maha Kumbh has turned into a 'Mrityu Kumbh' under the BJP rule, Banerjee said during an address in the West Bengali assembly on February 18. Back in Gorakhpur, Adityanath also said his government sent ministers to some states to invite governors and chief ministers to the Maha Kumbh, and if possible also hold a press (conference). He also thanked the media for helping the Maha Kumbh transform into the biggest event of the world through their positive writings. He said the Kumbh became a base to connect society with the idea of Ek Bharat, Shresth Bharat. For the first time, it was seen that culture can fuel prosperity, faith can become a medium of livelihood. He told the journalists, Whatever support you require to take positive role of the media forward, the government will stand with you. Internet suspended in Bengal's Birbhum till March 17 after Holi clash, BJP likens state to Bangladesh Adityanath said several freedom fighters played an important role as journalists and gave momentum to the freedom movement through their work in media. These include Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi and others who gave a new direction to society with the their writings, he said. Adityanath also said that when the country's democracy was being strangled, news groups put all their strength to save the democracy through their writings. He underlined the ever-evolving role of the media in the changing world. Today, technology is changing rapidly... today the young generation is using social media platforms because they have less time. In such a situation, the responsibility of media institutions has increased even more to convey positive things because some people are spreading negativity by misusing social media platforms. In such a situation, the media world will have to move forward with the same role for which it is known. This will be a big task not only for democracy but also for the security and sovereignty of the country, he said. The UP chief minister said the first condition of good governance and democracy is dialogue, and media can promote dialogue. During the programme, Gorakhpur Mayor Dr Manglesh Shrivastava administered the oath to the newly elected office bearers. Adityanath handed over the election certificates to the newly elected office-bearers of the Press Club and congratulated them, the UP government said in a statement. LUCKNOW: Relations between Nepal's royals and the Gorakhnath Peeth, currently presided by UP CM Yogi Adityanath, run strong as the revered Peeth remains the presiding deity of the Shah dynasty of Nepal. UP CM Yogi Adityanath had visited Janakpur in Nepal towards the end of 2023 to participate in an annual festival held there to mark the wedding of Ram-Janaki (Sita). Nepal premier KP Sharma Oli had also taken part in it. Though the neighbouring countries have had friendly ties, the relationship has gone through ups and down in recent years, especially after the fall of Nepal's monarchy in 2006 and the formation of government by Maoists in 2008. The Shah was forced to give up the rule following massive street protests in 2006. Two years later, Nepals parliament voted to abolish the monarchy, transforming the country into a secular republic. The latest controversy erupted on Sunday when the supporters of erstwhile Nepal king Gyanendra Shah flashed the poster carrying the picture of UP CM Yogi Adityanath at a rally outside Kathmandu airport while welcoming King Gaynendra. Vacate the royal palace for the king. Come back king, save the country. Long live our beloved king. We want monarchy, the protestors sloganeered. As per the political experts, the new row could lead to a deterioration of ties as the incumbent Oli government of Nepal smells Indias role in pro-Monarchy uprising. However, many of the 13 governments that have ruled the Himalayan state since the fall of monarchy there have been accused of widespread corruption and lawlessness. This plight of Nepal is taking its people back in support of the reinstatement of monarchy. The man, Pradeep Bikram Rana, who held the posters of Adityanath at Kathmandu rally on Sunday , claimed that he landed himself in trouble with the Nepal police chasing him. He felt threatened making his way to Gorakhpur and told media persons that he feared persecution in his country. According to Rana, cops started looking for his home after the rally. A chase began, he fled Kathmandu and crossed the border from the Raxaul side in Bihar and finally reached Gorakhpur by a passenger train. He told the media that he idolised the UP CM and saw him as a symbol of Hindu pride, saying this had prompted him to wave the Indian leaders posters in Kathmandu. However, not everyone sees it that way. Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli condemned the use of Adityanaths photos, saying that the country should not be in a position where foreign images were needed to lead protests. Gyanendras supporters, on the other, refuted the claims of Indias hand behind the rally saying that the display of the UP CMs photo was a deliberate attempt to malign the pro-monarchist movement by Oli government. They even accused the Oli government of orchestrating the move through infiltration. Pro-monarchist Rastriya Prajatantra Party spokesperson Gyanendra Shahi even claimed in a social media post: The photograph of Yogi Adityanath was displayed in the rally at the instruction of Bishnu Rimal, chief advisor of Prime Minister KP Oli, at the advice of Oli. Even some sections of pro-monarchist leaders were quoted as saying on social media that: We are not as weak as needing to use a foreigners photo in our procession. In fact, the sources in Gorakhnath confirm that with Gorakshnath being the presiding deity of the Shah dynasty, former King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah, used to look up to Mahant Avaidyanath, who was Adityanaths mentor. In 1992, King Birendra himself drove down from Kathmandu to the Gorakhpur Mutt. Even today, the first offering of the khichadi offered to the revered shrine in Gorakhpur on Makarsankranti is from the Shah dynasty of Nepal. It is also believed that King Birendra decided on Nepal being a Hindu state on the advice of Avaidyanath in 1990 when Nepals constitution was being amended. The Gorakshnath Mutt was actively involved in relief operations during the devastation caused in the Himalayan state in 2015 earthquake. Yogi Adityanath is reported to have overseen the reconstruction work along the border areas. Additionally, Adityanath has been critical of the Nepal governments decision to declare the nation a secular state.
Man under police radar for waving poster of Yogi Adityanath in Nepal lands in Gorakhpur
LUCKNOW: A Nepalese man landed in trouble after waving a poster carrying UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's picture at a rally to welcome former Nepal king Gyanendra in Kathmandu on Sunday. Claiming to be pursued by the Nepal police, the man landed in Gorakhpur on Tuesday. Talking to media persons in Gorakhpur, the man, who identified himself as Pradeep Vikram Rana, denied having raised the poster at anyone's behest. He even denied having any acquaintance with the UP CM. Claiming to be a strong votary of Nepal being reinstated as a Hindu rashtra, Rana said that sentiment prompted him to raise Yogi's poster at the rally to welcome the former Nepal king. According to reports, thousands had gathered to welcome former King Gyanendra at Kathmandu airport following his return to the capital after three months on March 9. Among those who had assembled in the pro-monarchy rally outside the airport included many who had raised Yogi Adityanath's posters. The incident sparked controversy as the Nepal government condemned the use of posters of a foreign country's leader. Rana claimed that after the incident, the police sought to detain him. Following a police chase, he fled Kathmandu and crossed the Indo-Nepal border from the Raxaul side in Bihar and finally reached Gorakhpur by a passenger train. Rana said no one incited him nor sponsored him as he was not short of money. He added that he would not return to Nepal until this government is ousted.

Railway asks RITES to design proposed permanent holding areas at railway stations
NEW DELHI: Following the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station which killed at least 18 people including four children, the Ministry of Railways has instructed Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) to design 'permanent holding areas' (PHAs) at 60 stations across the country for crowd management. These stations have been selected based on the sudden increased crowd surges during special occasions like Holi, Diwali, Chhatha and other festivals. So far, permanent holding areas (PHAs) have been developed at only 9 stations in and around Prayagraj in UP. These holding areas are located outside the platforms to help control the flow of passengers and prevent overcrowding. In view of emerging crowds of passengers for Mahakumbh ahead of Mahashivratri, falling this year on February 26, passengers holding areas on temporary basis have also been created at Patna junction, Danapur, Ara, Buxar, Sasaram Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Hajipur, Samastipur and other railway stations following the massive origination of passengers towards Mahakumbh, a senior official working with the Ministry of Railway told this newspaper. The temporary passenger holding areas have also been created at Deendayal Upadhyay Railway station, formerly known as Mughalsarai, under the east Central Railway. Upon being asked about the progress on the plan for the construction of the proposed holding areas, the railway official said, The RITES has been instructed to start working on the design of permanent holding areas keeping every factors in mind. After the design is readied by the RITES, the Ministry of Railway after wider discussion approves it and move ahead in mission mode for 60 railway stations. Many stations in Bihar, UP and other states witness sudden surges in crowds of passengers during festivals like Saharsa. Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Udna, New Delhi and other stations also witness sharp surges in number of passengers during festivals. After final design of PHAs is readied and approved, all amenities like ticketing zones, wi-fi, eateries stalls, and others would be made available in each of PHAs. Not only this, by doing some changes in the Amrit stations, the permanent holding area would also be created to control crowds during peak time, said an official. As it is roughly being estimated, the Ministry will have to spend between Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore for the development of these permanent holding areas as part of a larger effort to improve crowd management at major stations. Railway Ministry orders platform X to remove videos of New Delhi railway station stampede For the time being, in view to keep emerging crowds for Mahakumbh, massive holding areas at Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar, New Delhi, Ayodhya Dham, Vanaras ,Ballia, Siwan, Deoria, Chhapra, Rajendranagar in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Barauni, Jaynagar, Madhubani, Raxaul, and Gaya have been created by the railway. Passengers are allowed to enter the platforms based on the scheduled departure times of their trains. This initiative aims to improve crowd management and enhance passenger safety, especially during peak hours and festive seasons, the official said. Meanwhile, UP CM Yogi Aditaynath appreciated the railway for arrangements to the Mahakumbh-bound passengers. He said that more than 13,500 trains including more than 3500 special trains are in service for the Mahakumbh. The 48 digital ticketing, multilingual announcements and conveniences being provided to passengers reflect the railway's commitment, he said.
Prayagraj, Kashi, Ayodhya showcase Indias true potential: UP CM Yogi Adityanath
LUCKNOW: Treating the countrys cultural heritage and spiritual prosperity with respect, honour and pride fosters both unity and economic growth as has been seen during the Mahakumbh , said UP CM Yogi Adityanath here on Monday. He noted that under PM Modis guidance, cities like Ayodhya, Kashi, and Prayagraj have not only manifested the revival of Indian culture but have also contributed significantly to the economy, showcasing India's immense potential on the global stage. While interacting with the young entrepreneurs from Mumbai at -- Dialogue with Young Entrepreneurs at his residence, Yogi challenged critics of Mahakumbh with facts. At the event organised by Yuva Bharat Sansthan, the Chief Minister asked the entrepreneurs if an investment of Rs 7,500 crore by both the Central and State governments generates an economic activity worth Rs 3 lakh crore to Rs 3.5 lakh crore. Isnt it a wise investment? So far, 53 crore devotees have taken a sacred dip at Sangam during Mahakumbh since January 13, and the stream is likely to continue with the same pace till the conclusion of the mela on February 26. This is a testimony to India's spiritual and economic strength, said the CM. He highlighted an unprecedented resurgence of faith and cultural pride among the countrymen under PM Modis leadership in the last decade. It has become possible with the restoration of the countrys spiritual heritage while acknowledging the significance of places long associated with its identity, said the CM. He compared the current footfall of 53 crore over 36 days at Mahakumbh with that of 2013 Kumbh when 12 crore devotees had participated in the Mela over a period of 55 days. In 2019, when Ardh Kumbh (renamed as Kumbh), the number had doubled to 24 crore. This year, during the 45-day Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, 53 crore devotees have arrived in just 36 days. However, the CM attributed the massive surge of devotees to logistics and strategic initiatives to accommodate it. In just 35 days, besides, 40 routine flights, over 700 chartered flights landed in and around Prayagraj. The Indian Railways have been running hundreds of special trains daily while the Surface Transport Corporation has deployed a fleet of 14,000 buses to facilitate the pilgrimage, observed Yogi. From January 28 to 30, 15 crore devotees took a holy dip. On January 28, around 5.5 crore devotees came, followed by 8 crore on January 29, and 2.5 crore on January 30, the CM shared with the gathering. Emphasizing that while respecting faith, its economic impact was equally significant, CM Yogi cited the example of Shivalik Park wherein the investor, who set up a project a replica of the Dwadash Jyotirlinga on Mela premises-- committed to funding the project on a profit-sharing model of 50-50. Prayagraj Municipal Corporation allocated 11 acres of land for the initiative, the firm invested Rs 14 crore. Within the first 21 days, it recovered its investment amount earning an equal profit. Even the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is also earning revenue from the project. Citing the success of Shivalik Park, Yogi asserted that spiritual tourism had immense potential with lakhs getting jobs, thereby, contributing to Uttar Pradeshs economic growth. He highlighted the infrastructural growth in the cities like Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Kashi, Chitrakoot, Gorakhpur, and Naimisharanya. He attributed the development of those religious and spiritual centres to the strong political will despite fierce opposition by the political rivals. The impact is clear. At Ram temple on Shree Ram Janmabhoomi premises, Rs 700 crores came through donations in just one year after the consecration of Ram Lall in sanctum sanctorum of the upcoming temple in January, last year, he remarked. The CM invited the entrepreneurs to Shri Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Kashi, where millions of devotees from India and across the world were reaffirming their faith while showcasing India's cultural and economic power to the world.
New Delhi stampede: Rail Bhavan gets into huddle
NEW DELHI: Under pressure from various quarters, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday held a series of meeting at the Rail Bhavan to take stock of the safety measures during heavy passenger rush. Vaishnaw also met and briefed Home Minister Amit Shah about the stampede at the New Delhi railway station. Railways announced the names of two high administrative group officials, who will be part of the inquiry committee constituted to probe the stampede at the New Delhi Railway station. Narsingh Deo, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Northern Railway, and Pankaj Gangwar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, Northern Railway, are the members of the committee, the railways said. Railways directed all zones to remain on maximum alert, ensuring the safety of passengers during seasons of heavy footfall, especially in stations dealing with high numbers of passengers traveling to the Maha Kumbh. Railway stations across UP on high alert amid Mahakumbh rush
In the wake of the stampede at Delhi Railway Station that claimed 18 lives on Saturday, railway stations across Uttar Pradesh have been put on high alert following the massive convergence of devotees reaching Prayagraj for a holy dip at Sangam during the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela. Over 52 crore people have bathed on the ghats along Sangam in Prayagraj. However, the massive crowds of devotees have resulted in severe congestion on roads and railway stations, leading to significant travel disruptions. Over the weekend, Prayagraj and its neighbouring districts, including Ayodhya, Gonda, Varanasi, Fatehpur, Gorakhpur, and even the state capital Lucknow, experienced huge crowds at railway stations. Besides the above-mentioned stations, almost all other stations, including Chitrakoot, Kannauj, and Jhansi, have been put on alert after the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. At Charbagh Railway Station in Lucknow, cops have been carrying out inspections. They have prepared a list of trains going to Prayagraj and are brainstorming on arrangements to manage the crowd. They are also checking CCTV footage. The railways are witnessing a massive surge in footfall in view of the ongoing Mela. The trains reaching Prayagraj are overcrowded at stations, with passengers awaiting Prayagraj-bound or even adjoining district trains to reach the Mahakumbh, despite the three significant 'Amrit Snans' (holy dips) on the auspicious days of Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, and Basant Panchami being over. ADG Railways, Prakash D, has issued directives to the authorities concerned to ensure the deployment of GRP personnel at all railway stations across the state. Moreover, the GRP has also been directed to manage the crowd and maintain order on the platforms while working in coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and railway authorities. In order to avoid any chaos due to overcrowding at railway stations, GRP personnel have been deployed on footover bridges. Special caution is being taken on the platforms through which the Prayagraj-bound special Mela trains are passing. Meanwhile, the police authorities of all the districts through which trains for Prayagraj are passing have deployed district police personnel around railway stations for crowd management.

LUCKNOW: Referring to a recent international survey, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh claimed that UP capital Lucknow was included among the fastest-growing cities in the world, with rapidly increasing land prices and with ongoing efforts to turn it into a global investment hub with world-class infrastructure. The Defence Minister was joined by Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari in lauding the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath saying UP was witnessing unprecedented development under his leadership. While Rajnath claimed that the BrahMos missile manufacturing project, part of the ambitious Defence Corridor, would be inaugurated in May-June this year, marking a significant milestone in UPs industrial growth, Gadkari said that UP was no longer a BIMARU state but was one of the leading contributors to India's economy. He also said that CM Yogi had successfully worked towards establishing Ram Rajya in Uttar Pradesh. Both the Union ministers were in Lucknow on Friday inaugurating and laying the foundation of various development projects worth Rs 1,028 crore. While giving an elaborate account of the infrastructure development of Lucknow in recent years, Rajnath Singh said that the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway was being constructed rapidly and that it would reduce the travel time between the two cities to just 40 minutes from nearly two hours. The Raksha Mantri added that the state was witnessing an unprecedented surge in religious tourism following the construction of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple and Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. He also stated that Lucknow was also witnessing a jump in investment in sectors including real estate, the hospitality, and healthcare. Meanwhile, praising the development in Uttar Pradesh, Gadkari said: Under PM Narendra Modis leadership, India aims to become a global leader and a USD 5 trillion economy, with Uttar Pradesh playing a crucial role in achieving this target. He mentioned that strong infrastructure in roads, water, energy, transport, and communication will boost industries, attract investment, and create new employment opportunities. Highlighting infrastructure development in UP, Gadkari said that Rs 1.25 lakh crore worth of roads have been completed, Rs 1 lakh crore worth of projects are under construction, and another Rs 1 lakh crore worth of projects are in the pipeline. Additionally, to drive industrial growth in Purvanchal, a Rs 75,000 crore road network is planned from Varanasi to Kolkata and Gorakhpur to Siliguri, Gadkari said. He urged CM Yogi to pace up land acquisition and environmental clearances for the projects to roll on. Gadkari underscored the massive economic activity at ongoing Mahakumbh claiming that the event had contributed Rs 3 lakh crore to Uttar Pradeshs GDP. He emphasised that tourism was a sector that generated high employment with minimal investment, benefiting hotels, taxis, restaurants, small businesses, and local artisans. I am having no idea where to search my mother. She has an identity card around her neck but her phone is not reachable. She knows how to call up from mobile but she has not contacted anyone, said Mahendra fearing the worst. He and her mother came with 20 others from UPs Unnao to take a holy dip at Sangam. Like him, lot of devotees are busy searching desperately for their dear ones while some fortunate ones managed to find their kin after hours wait. Most of those still missing are women. Lakshmi Kashyap from Jhansi has been missing since Mauni Amavasya. Her nephew Rakesh said, My aunt, uncle, my father and mother travelled to the Kumbh Mela for a holy dip at the Sangam. After taking a dip on Mauni Amavasya evening with all of us, my aunt got separated from the family and we are yet to get her whereabouts. Shyama Verma from Jaunpur had come with 15 of her relatives. We parked our vehicle before entering the Mela area. After the dip, we gathered at Sahso Chauraha to return home but Shayma got separated due to jostling by the huge crowd. All our efforts to find her have gone in vain so far, said her husband Ram Sharan Verma. While for many families the anxious wait continues, some have been fortunate to reunite with their loved ones. Among them is Renu Lata Nandi from Odishas Kendrapara who had been missing since Tuesday night after taking a dip in the Ganga. My mother got separated from our group after the bath. We were extremely worried, especially after hearing about the stampede. But today, a fellow villager from our group of 26 people found her in Sector 20. We are all relieved, her son Amar Kumar Nandi said. Some of those who lost touch with the group with whom they had travelled to Prayagraj were making efforts to return home alone. Among them were an elderly couple from Kushinagar Ram Sanehi and Bitta Devi. Now, we are just trying to find a way to reach the railway station and board a train to Gorakhpur. But we have no idea how to get there, said Sanehi. According to Umesh Chandra Tiwari, who runs the lost-and-found camp of the Bharat Seva Dal in Sector 4 on the Mela premises, the new digital lost-and-found centre is proving effective in reconnecting people. SC asks hospitals to regularise doctors' absence during RG Kar protests
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed hospitals, including AIIMS New Delhi, to regularise the unauthorised absence of doctors who were part of protests against the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, Kolkata.A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar took note of the submissions of a doctors' body that some hospitals had regularised the absence of the doctors following its August 22, 2024 order but a few others, including AIIMS Delhi, decided to treat the period as leave of absence. We deem it appropriate to clarify that if protesting workers had joined work post the Supreme Court order then their absence shall be regularised and not be treated as absence from duty. This is issued in peculiar facts and circumstances of the cases and is not laying down any precedent, the CJI said. The lawyer appearing for the body said the decision to treat the protest period as leave may create trouble for some of the medical PG students. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, said as the case was non-adversarial, the hospitals would abide by the top court's directions. Mehta said AIIMS, Delhi, decided to treat the period as leave of absence availed by the doctors. By an earlier order, it was stated that no coercive step would be taken against the protesting doctors for protests till the date of the order. Pursuant to this some of the AIIMS such as Kalyani and Gorakhpur and the PGI Chandigarh have regularised the absence. However some other institutes have treated the said period as if doctors were on leave, said the bench. On August 22, last year, the bench made an impassioned appeal to the protesting doctors across the country, asking them to resume work. Observing justice and medicine couldn't be stopped, it directed no coercive action would be taken against doctors once they resumed work. The heinous crime triggered nationwide outrage and prolonged protests in West Bengal. The bench was hearing the suo-motu case over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the Kolkata hospital. On January 20, a Kolkata trial court awarded convict Sanjay Roy life term imprisonment till death in the case. The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the hospital's seminar room on August 9, last year following which the Kolkata police arrested civic volunteer Roy the next day in connection with the crime.
