Madhya Pradesh farmer who sought bride from religious stage goes missing after trip to Gorakhpur
BHOPAL: A month after a viral video showed 45-year-old part-time teacher and farmer Indra Kumar Tiwari appealing for a bride from the stage of a religious event in Madhya Pradeshs Jabalpur district, he has mysteriously gone missing. Tiwari, a resident of Padwar (Khitola) village in Jabalpur, was last seen on June 2. Before leaving, he told neighbours he was travelling to Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh and would return by June 6. When he failed to return, concerned villagers reported his disappearance, prompting the Majhouli Police Station to file a missing persons report on June 8. Police have since been trying to trace the middle-aged man, who has no close family members, complicating the investigation. Tiwaris public plea for marriage had gained attention after he spoke on stage during a religious gathering led by young preacher Swami Aniruddhacharya. According to locals, Tiwari had often expressed a desire to find a suitable match, possibly putting him on the radar of fraudsters running marriage scams. Before leaving for Gorakhpur, someone from there had met him. It is suspected he may have been lured with the promise of marriage, police sources involved in the probe said. Villagers claim that after his video went viral, unknown individuals contacted Tiwari, promising to arrange his marriage to a woman named Khushi. They reportedly asked him to bring jewellery and cash with him to Gorakhpur. Superintendent of Police Sampat Upadhyaya confirmed that Tiwari had indeed reached Gorakhpur, but disappeared shortly thereafter. Were actively investigating his disappearance. The lack of close relatives has made the case challenging, but were working on vital clues. The involvement of Looteri Dulhan (runaway bride) gangs is a possibility we are not ruling out, he said. The police continue to rely heavily on local villagers for leads, as they press on with efforts to solve the mystery of Tiwaris disappearance.

In a major thrust to the energy sector, the PM laid the foundation stone for a 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) across 15 grid substations in the state, including those in Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Bettiah, and Siwan. With each substation to house 20-80 MWh capacity batteries, the system is expected to help discoms reduce peak-hour electricity costs and enhance supply reliability. These units will save the distribution companies from buying electricity at expensive rates by feeding the already-stored electricity back to the grid, benefiting the consumers, an official said. Modi also handed over the first instalment to more than 53,600 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U) and marked the Grih Pravesh ceremony for over 6,600 completed houses by handing over keys to select beneficiaries. PATNA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various infrastructure and development projects worth Rs 5,700 crore in Bihars Siwan district on Friday. Siwan, once regarded as the stronghold of late RJD MP and strongman Mohammad Shahabuddin, will witness several key unveilings during the Prime Ministers visit. Notably, PM Modi will flag off the first locomotive manufactured for export to Guinea in West Africa, produced at the diesel locomotive factory in Marhowrah, Saran district. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time Indian Railways is exporting a locomotive, rather than sending aid under a line of credit as done previously with countries such as Bangladesh and Mozambique. In a major push for railway infrastructure, Modi will also inaugurate the VaishaliDeoria railway line project, constructed at a cost of Rs 400 crore. A new train service on this route will also be flagged off. Modi to announce bonanzas during poll-bound Bihar visit
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modis scheduled visit to Bihar on June 20 to attend a railway function followed by a public rally in Siwan holds political significance. Considered a stronghold of the RJD, Siwan is home to a sizeable Muslim and Yadav voter base demographics the BJP aims to influence ahead of assembly elections due in October-November. Siwan and adjoining districts of Gopalganj and Chhapra are politically critical for the NDA. Modis address is expected to target RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, especially after a controversy erupted over placement of Dr BR Ambedkars picture near his feet. Narendra Modi will not miss the chance to target RJD over the issue, in a bid to polarise Dalit votes in favour of the NDA across Siwan, which has a 45% Dalit population, said political observer RK Verma. He added that the PM will highlight the double engine governments commitment to development and accused the Opposition of playing politics over Dalit issues. There is also a strong chance of the PM speaking on the caste census, for which his government issued a notification a few days ago, an NDA leader said. PM may highlight how the new Waqf law is designed to benefit economically weaker Muslim women and families, particularly from the Pasmanda community, he said. The PM will flag off a Vande Bharat train from Patliputra to Gorakhpur. He is scheduled to inaugurate and lay foundation stone for projects worth `9,519 crore in Siwan. The PMs rally will highlight our developmental agenda, countering the Oppositions fake narrative, a senior NDA leader, wishing not to be named. As Siwan is the birthplace of Indias first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, the PM is likely to use this historical connection to strike an emotional chord with the public.

BHOPAL/ LUCKNOW: Ujala Yadav, a young student in Holipur (Inamipur) village in Ghazipur districts Saidpur area, has claimed that she met Raja Raghuvanshis wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, outside the Varanasi railway station and later at the bus terminal in Varanasi on May 8 night. Raja's wife, Sonam, now in Meghalaya police custody, had surrendered in Uttar Pradeshs Ghazipur, after remaining in hiding for 17 days. Ujala recalled that Sonam was accompanied by two young men outside the Varanasi railway station, where she came across her and enquired about the next train to Gorakhpur. It was around 10 pm that she enquired about the train to Gorakhpur, I told her that it was at 3 am, so she could even take a bus to Gorakhpur from the nearby inter-state bus terminal (ISBT), claimed Ujala. She further said how Sonam came and enquired about the bus to Gorakhpur at platform no. 7 while she was waiting for a bus to travel to Ghazipur. One of my close relatives had died, owing to which I had come down from Lucknow to travel to Ghazipur. When I reached the interstate bus terminal (ISBT) close to the Varanasi railway station, she (Sonam) also came there, she said. Both of them boarded the same bus to Gorakhpur via Ghazipur. Ujala recalled that Sonam had covered her face with a scarf and was wearing a T-shirt. She was seated adjacent to my seat. During the journey, she asked a male passenger seated next to her to lend his phone to make a call to someone, but he refused to oblige, Ujala said. Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Sonam Raghuvanshi confesses to involvement in husband's murder That male passenger subsequently changed the seat, after which she (Sonam) shifted to my side, she added. Ujala spoke about how Sonam borrowed her phone, typed a number and later deleted it from the call list, before returning the phone to her. Sonam also requested her not to surf social media and watch the reports on the honeymoon case after realising that Ujala was reading reports on the case on social media. Throughout that short journey of around an hour and a half, she kept on asking how soon she could reach Gorakhpur. I saw her face for a few seconds, when she took water from my bottle and sprinkled it on her face after removing the scarf, said Ujala. Ujala got down near her village in Ghazipurs Saidpur area and Sonam went ahead on the journey to Gorakhpur. In the morning when I saw the TV channels, I saw the news about Raja Raghuvanshis missing wife Sonam Raghuvanshi resurfacing after 17 days at a dhaba in Nandganj in my native Ghazipur district, she said. That dhaba is around 10-15 km from my village. I immediately recognized her and figured she might have stepped down near the dhaba in the Nandganj area, she added. Ujala contacted Raja Raghuvanshis family in Indore and informed his brother Sachin Raghuvanshi, about the incident. Sachin Raghuvanshi sent pictures of four suspects (all young men), but it didnt match with those two youths who were present with her outside the Varanasi railway station on the night of May 8, said Ujala. Meghalaya honeymoon case: Husband murdered, wife arrested, family calls her innocent Ujala subsequently reported the incident to the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur district. Now the Meghalaya police are also in touch with me and Ive assured them of full cooperation, Ujala said. Importantly, the TNIE had reported on June 11 about the possibility of Sonam having boarded a bus to Gorakhpur from ISBT in Varanasi on June8 night and then deboarded the bus in Nandganj in Ghazipur district (around 65 km from Varanasi). The TNIE report had also mentioned that one of the fellow passengers in the bus having seen and interacted with her. Three days later, the young college student in Saidpur (Ghazipur) Ujala Yadav has made claims which are on the same lines, as was mentioned in the June 11 TNIE report. Sonam was traced after 17 days at the roadside dhaba in Ankushpur village in Ghazipur district of eastern UP at around 1.15 am on June 9 and borrowed the dhaba owner Sahil Yadavs phone to make a call to her elder brother Govind, who was searching for her in Meghalaya. He had subsequently informed the incident to cops in Meghalaya and Indore after which the Nandganj police rushed to the concerned dhaba and took Sonam to a one-stop center in Ghazipur city. Sonam had resurfaced at Nandganj (Ghazipur) on the intervening night of June 8-9, just a few hours after her alleged lover and family businesss employee Raj Kushwah and three henchmen were arrested from MP and UP in a joint operation by Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh police. Sources in Indore police have told TNIE that while Raja and henchmen were being questioned, they had told Sonam will resurface in the next few hours. The north-eastern states East Khasi Hills district police superintendent Vivek Syiel told journalists in Shillong on June 12 that after getting husband Raja killed on May 23 by the three henchmen, Sonam had returned to Indore via bus, taxi and train on May 26 after travelling through five states and stayed in hiding in her home city till June 8. On June 8, she left by road in a vehicle arranged by her alleged lover Raj Kushwah to go to Siliguri, where according to their plan, she wouldve re-surfaced and then narrated the story of having been kidnapped in Meghalaya, police said. When the first arrest in the case, Akash Rajput, was made by plain-clothed cops in UPs Lalitpur district on June 8 evening, Raj (who wasnt nabbed by then) came to know from a local contact in Lalitpur about Akash having been abducted by unidentified men. Sensing something wrong, he immediately rang Sonam who was on way to Siliguri and asked her to re-surface as soon as possible and narrate the concocted kidnapping story, the East Khasi Hills district SP said. Was Sonam planning to go to Nepal? Both Gorakhpur in eastern UP and Siliguri in West Bengal are common transit points to Nepal. The distance from Gorakhpur to Sunauli-Bhairawa Indo-Nepal border is around 95 km (around 2 hours drive), while the distance between Siliguri and Indo-Nepal border at Kakarbhitta is just around 36 km. Criminals from India have often used Nepal to go underground, taking into account this latest claim by the Ghazipur (UP) girl about Sonam being in a hurry to go to Gorakhpur on June 8 night, possibility of Sonam also trying to escape from Gorakhpur or even Siliguri to Nepal cannot be totally ruled out, a source in MP police who was part of the June 8-9 joint operation by MP and Meghalaya police told this newspaper. Importantly, after talking to Sonam over phone on June 8-9 intervening night, her brother Govind Raghuvanshi too had come down to Ghazipur via Gorakhpur only.
UP Police busts racket smuggling liquor into Bihar in milk tanker
Mau (UP): Two people were arrested for using a milk tanker with a concealed compartment to illegally transport alcohol from Uttar Pradesh to Bihar, a dry state, police said. Mau police intercepted the consignment, worth more than Rs 10 lakh, on Friday near the Gorakhpur-Varanasi highway during a special checking drive, they said. Inside what appeared to be an ordinary milk tanker, police found 173 cartons of country-made liquor and eight cartons of whisky pouches, officials said. Mau in eastern Uttar Pradesh is located close to Bihar, where assembly polls are due later this year. Speaking at a press conference, SP Elamaran G said, This is a major breakthrough for the Mau police. The liquor was hidden inside a modified compartment in a milk tanker. Our FSO team and Kotwali police acted swiftly on a tip-off and seized liquor worth more than Rs 10 lakh near Harua. She added that the liquor was picked up from Ghazipur and was being smuggled into Bihar, a state where alcohol is prohibited. When we scanned the barcodes on the pouches, we traced the origin to shops in Ghazipur, the SP said. From the outside, the tanker looked like it was carrying milk or other dairy items, but the internal structure had a hidden chamber designed to transport liquor. Two men from Bihar's Buxar district, who were accompanying the consignment, were arrested on the spot. The vehicle's driver managed to flee and is currently being traced, police said.
UP BJPs wait for a new state chief continues
LUCKNOW: Even after five months past the partys expected timeline, the wait for the new president of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the ruling BJP continues. The delay is a hot topic in the political corridors of the state. Experts feel that the BJP is taking time to pick a leader who can lead the party not only through the upcoming panchayat elections but also the significant 2027 battle. A section of leaders believes that the state will get a new chief only after the election of a new national BJP president. The term of the current UP BJP chief, Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a Jat leader from western UP ended in January 2023, concurrent with BJP national president JP Naddas term. Chaudhary was appointed UP BJP chief on August 29, 2022. At the time, he was the Panchayati Raj Minister in Yogi Adityanaths cabinet. The appointment was seen as an attempt to reach out to the influential Jat community, which had spearheaded the year-long farmers protest ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While CM Yogi Adityanath hails from eastern UP, the party then sought regional balance by appointing Chaudhary. Incidentally, since Naddas term has been extended, Chaudharys term has also been extended. Notably, organisational elections at the lower levels have been completed in the state. On March 16, new district presidents were appointed in 70 of the 98 districts as per the partys configuration. Since then, however, no step has been taken to elect a new state chief. Although deliberations on appointing a new UP BJP chief began in January, and National General Secretary BL Santosh had said a new state president would be announced by January 15, party workers had expected a final decision by thenor at least by January 30. Five months have passed, yet theres still no development or indication from the party regarding the impending election. In the absence of concrete steps, speculation abounds over probable names for the post. OBC leaders like Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh, Rajya Sabha member Baburam Nishad, and MLC Ashok Kataria are in the race. From the Scheduled Castes category, former minister Ram Shankar Katheria and MLC Vidyasagar Sonkar are being discussed. A few Brahmin community names, former Basti MP Harish Dwivedi, Rajya Sabha member Dr. Dinesh Sharma, MLA Srikant Sharma, and Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay are also prominent in discussions. Political experts note that the BJP, known for its strategic planning, faces the crucial challenge of the upcoming panchayat elections. The appointment of the state president will be made with that in mind. The party is busy understanding the mathematics of the panchayat polls, says Prof. A.K. Mishra, a prominent political scientist. Party insiders say the delay in announcing a new state chief is also hindering changes in the regional presidencies, four out of the six regions (Awadh, Kashi, Braj, West Gorakhpur, and Kanpur). Complaints against one or two regional presidents have surfaced. These leaders are uncertain about their political futures and are conducting party programs and campaigns half-heartedly. Their entire focus is on either becoming regional president again or finding a spot in the new state team, says a senior BJP leader. Moreover, regional presidents have not been allowed to form their own teams, having to work with 2021s team. Insiders say central leadership received complaints about irregularities in forming regional and district teams, leading to an unofficial ban on announcing executive committees. At the same time, the state presidents of BJPs Mahila Morcha, Yuva Morcha, OBC Morcha, Kisan Morcha, SC Morcha, ST Morcha, and Minority Morcha have been working for about four years, no changes were made during Chaudharys tenure. Once a new BJP state president is appointed, the state presidents of all morchas will also be replaced.
Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Where was Sonam for 17 days after Rajas killing?
With Meghalaya police linking the May23 honeymoon murder of Raja Raghuvanshi to his wife Sonam and four others, the milliondollar question remains, where was Sonam for the 17 days after her husband was killed? According to sources, investigators are pursuing information indicating that Sonam may have returned to her hometown of Indore on May25, two days after the killing, before possibly leaving by road for Varanasi in eastern UP. It is believed that upon returning to Indore, she met alleged accomplice Raj Kushwah (an accountant in her fathers furniture business), who then hid her in a rented room near Dewas Naka. Two days later, she was allegedly sent by Raj perhaps via Taxi to Varanasi. Afterward, she disappeared until resurfacing in eastern UPs Nandganj (Ghazipur) around 1:15am on June89. Another theory under investigation is that Sonam boarded a bus from Varanasi ISBT bound for Gorakhpur on June8, but deboarded after approximately 65km at a dhaba near Nandganj when she learned of Raj Kushwah and three others being arrested in Indore that night. Eyewitnesses say they saw her at Varanasi ISBT speaking with two young men before boarding the bus. If the second possibility is accurate, why was she heading to Gorakhpur? In the past, people in hiding used that route to escape into Nepal. Were verifying all these leads, including information gathered from the initial questioning of the four male suspects and Sonam, offical sources said. Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Sonam's alleged affair could be motive behind killing, says police; lover among four held Further investigation has revealed that Raj Kushwah provided Rs50,000 and two cell phones (one keypad, one Android) to his three henchmen, Vishal, Akash, and Anand before they traveled from Delhi to Meghalaya via the Rajdhani Express. According to a senior officer, the keypad phone updated Raj on their progress, while the Android phone received live location and photos from Sonam as they tailed the couple from Guwahati to Rajas death between May2023. Assistant Commissioner Poonam Chand Yadav, part of the joint IndoreMeghalaya investigation team, said, Vishal has confessed to attacking Raja from behind on the head on May23. Our searches in Vishals Indore home recovered key evidence, including the clothes worn during the assault. A nearby open ground in Kailash Nagar was also searched, recovering SIM cards and other possible evidence. Notably, Vishal, Akash, and Anand were allchildhood friends of Raj Kushwah. Digital payment records show that Sonam was making transactions on Raj Kushwahs account throughout their North-East trip. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya police team in Indore has transferred Raj Kushwah and his three accomplices by flight, along with the lone female suspect, to Meghalaya for further questioning.

The complainant stated she recognised the decor and furniture in the video as those from their official residence at the district jail complex in Khalilabad (Sant Kabir Nagar), where they previously lived. She said she had personally chosen the wallpaper, curtains, and furnishings seen in the footage, suggesting the house may have been used as a makeshift studio. The woman also alleged that when she confronted her husband on May 18, the situation turned violent. Currently residing in Gorakhpur, she informed her father and brother about his activities. NIHSAD test report confirms bird flu as cause of Asiatic lion Pataudi's death at Kanpur zoo
LUCKNOW: The pathology report of Asiatic lion Pataudi , who died at Kanpur Zoo on Thursday, confirmed H5N1 (Avian Influenza) commonly known as bird flu, to be the cause of the felines demise. Pataudi was at Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoo in Gorakhpur and was shifted to Kanpur Zoo for treatment on May 11 after a tigress named Shakti died of bird flu on May 7, causing a state-wide alert. Meanwhile, after test reports from the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases(NIHSAD), Bhopal, confirmed bird flu as the cause of Pataudis death late Thursday night, Kanpur Zoo cremated the tiger in an electric furnace. Samples of the liver, intestines, and saliva were preserved for further tests, and the entire process was video-recorded by the authorities. Notably, the zoos in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Gorakhpur, along with the Etawah Lion Safari, were shut till May 20 amid bird flu concerns. After Pataudis death, fogging and sanitisation were intensified near the animal enclosure and the entire premises of Kanpur zoo, said Kanpur Zoo ranger Naved Ikram. Moreover, additional samples from animals have been collected and sent for testing. As per the informed sources, Pataudi, 15, was brought to Etawah Lion Safari from Junagarh in Gujarat in September, 2019. After spending two years in Etawah Lion Safari, Pataudi was relocated in Gorakhpur zoo in 2021. He was administered with intravenous medication, and an examination of the animal was conducted by the veterinary doctors on Wednesday. According to Dr Nasir, who had been supervising the team of four veterinary doctors of the state animal husbandry department attending Pataudi, the lion had consumed a kg of chicken upon his arrival in Kanpur Zoo on May 11. However, he stopped eating anything from Tuesday onwards.

Asiatic lion Pataudi dies at Kanpur zoo amid bird flu scare; samples sent to NIHSAD for testing

Pataudi was brought to Kanpur zoo from Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park in Gorakhpur on May 11. Meanwhile, the Kanpur Zoo authorities sent the visceral samples of the feline to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal for testing. The state wildlife authorities had already shut the three zoos, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Gorakhpur, along with the Etawah Lion Safari till May 20 as a precautionary measure amid the bird flu scare. Moreover, additional samples from animals have been collected and sent for testing. As per informed sources, Pataudi, aged 15, was brought to Etawah Lion Safari from Junagarh in Gujarat in September 2019. After spending two years at the safari, he was relocated to Gorakhpur Zoo in 2021. The wildlife authorities claimed that the lion was undergoing treatment for pancreatic and hepatic infections. For the last two days, the feline had stopped consuming food and was surviving only on water. He was administered intravenous medication, and a thorough examination was conducted by veterinary doctors on Wednesday. Pataudi was quarantined on suspicion of bird flu, and the Kanpur Zoo authorities have been ensuring continuous sanitisation of the entire premises. According to Dr. Nasir, who led a team of four veterinary doctors from the state animal husbandry department, Pataudi had consumed about a kilogram of chicken upon his arrival at Kanpur Zoo on May 11. LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Police continue their relentless crackdown on individuals posting pro-Pakistan content on social media platforms during Operation Sindoor . As per the police sources, 30 persons across 18 districts have been arrested by the authorities so far for their anti-India and pro-Pakistan posts on social media during the military operation by India in retaliation to Pahalgam terror killings . The police sources claim that, abiding by the directives of UP DGP Prashant Kumar, special team of social media cell of police headquarters has been running a relentless campaign lodging cases against such pro-Pakistan elements in Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Lakhimpur Kheri, Baghpat and many more districts across the state for making objectionable posts and comments on social media. The police authorities are also tracing those who, fearing the police action, deleted their social media accounts after making incendiary comments against India during Operation Sindoor, says a senior police officer. Police have initiated legal action against an account spreading false rumors on social media claiming that 40 people had died in a bomb blast in Gorakhpur during Operation Sindoor. The post was traced to an account under the name of Shalu Tripathi. Similarly, Bareillys Fareedpur resident, Faqruddin, was held for making objectionable posts on Facebook. In Lakhimpur Kheri Sameer Ali and Abdul Ashiq were held for shouting slogan Pakistan Zindabad and writing pro-Pakistan posts on social media. In Baghpat, the district police authorities have booked Usman Zahid for putting anti-India content on social media and a team of cops is out to nab him. The police authorities claim that the action is being taken not only against those who posted objectionable content on social media but also those anti-social elements who commented on such objectionable posts and shared them as well. The police authorities are also suspecting the role of toolkit behind such posts and a thorough investigation is on. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh Textile Industry Traders Association has given a call to boycott textiles imported from China and Turkiye as both the countries supported Pakistan openly during the recent military face-off between the two neighbours in the aftermath of Pahalgam terror killings. As per the Association sources, a delegation would soon meet Raskha Mantri Rajnath Singh seeking a ban on the textile trade with China and Turkiye. Associations president Ashok Motiyani said that Indian traders import textile from China and Turkiye substantially giving a respectable chunk of revenue to the two terror-supporting countries. As Turkiye and China are openly siding with the enemy country, there is no need to have trade relations with them, says Anil Bajaj, the general secretary of the Association. The scale of textile trade with the two countries could be assessed from the fact that in Lucknow only, the textile traders do a business worth Rs 200 crore per month by importing clothes from Turkiye and China.

He instructed that daily consumables such as oil, ghee, spices, milk, and cheese be tested rigorouslypreferably at production unitsto ensure quality. Special teams should be formed to carry out intensive checks of milk and dairy products with continuous monitoring, he said. Additionally, professional blood donors should be identified, and effective control should be established in this sector, he added. Public health is the state's top priority and it must be handled with full transparency and commitment. Officials informed the CM that the states network of food and drug laboratories had expanded significantly. Apart from six major divisions already in operation, new laboratories and offices have been established in Aligarh, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bareilly, Basti, Chitrakoot, Kanpur, Mirzapur, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, and Devi Patan divisions. Laboratory buildings in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Jhansi have also been upgraded, while three modern microbiology labs have been set up in Lucknow, Meerut, and Varanasi. These facilities are equipped for testing microorganisms, protozoa, viruses, bacteria, mycotoxins, and other pathogens. Testing is already underway in Lucknow and Meerut. The Chief Minister suggested the creation of a Corpus Fund to support the operation and maintenance of these laboratories. Bird flu scare: Death of a tigress lead to closure of zoos in Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The death of a tigress in Gorakhpur zoo led to the closure of Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur zoos along with Etawah Lion Safari for a week on Tuesday evening following the bird flu scare in the state zoos. The decision to shut the zoos came after the death of a tigress Shakti at the Gorakhpur zoo as bird flu was confirmed as the cause of the death of feline. Meanwhile, all the Tiger reserves, including Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Lakhimpur Kheri, Amangarh Tiger Reserve in Bijnore, Ranipur Tiger Reserve in Chitrakoot and Suhelva Tiger Reserve in Balrampur, in the state have been directed to be on high alert. The wildlife authorities got alerted after the death of tigress Shakti at Gorakhpur zoo on May 7. Its viscera samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, which confirmed bird flu as the cause of death on Tuesday. The tigress, Shakti, was over two years old and was brought to Gorakhpur after her rescue from Lakhimpur Kheris Mailani in May, 2024. Also, the viscera examination of the tigress by NIHSAD confirmed the presence of a rare Vibrio bacterial infection. This bacterium, typically found in aquatic life including fish and seabirds, is a potential risk of spreading H5N1 (avian influenza) through direct contact. Infection in several big cat species, including tigers, leopards, and others is common as they feed on infected poultry carcasses. Cats are also prone to infection because of their risk of exposure to poultry or wild birds, say the wild life experts. Moreover, female wolf Bhairavi also succumbed at the Gorakhpur zoo and its viscera samples were sent to IVRI Bareilly. Bhairavi's results are awaited. Meanwhile, a sick tiger named Pataudi was recently transferred to the Kanpur zoo, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus there. The monitoring of all animals in the zoo is being done. They are being checked for symptoms of bird flu or other illnesses. Keepers have been made aware of the symptoms, said the senior forest official. According to Anuradha Vemuri, the principal chief conservator of forest-Wildlife (PCCF-Wildlife), the highest protocol was already in place. The zoos in Lucknow, Kanpur and Gorakhpur districts and the lion safari in Etawah shall remain closed for a week, she said. In a late Tuesday evening message to the staff of tiger reserves, senior forest officials asked them to keep a watch on the behaviour of animals on their premises and report if any of them fell sick or died. Meanwhile, Chief minister Yogi Adityanath, taking cognizance of the scare, directed the wildlife authorities to enforce maximum vigilance in all zoos in Uttar Pradesh to check the spread of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu). As per an official statement, the CM chaired a high-level meeting saying the safety of protected animals and birds in zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetland areas and cow shelters must be treated as the topmost priority. He instructed officials to take all necessary preventive measures promptly and strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by both the central and state governments to curb the possible spread of the infection. As a preventive strategy, Yogi ordered regular sanitization of zoo premises and the use of blow torching where needed. He also emphasized mandatory health screenings of all wild animals and birds, along with strict inspection of their food to prevent any contamination. The CM directed that all zoo staff be fully aware about avian influenza and equipped with PPE kits and other essential safety gear. He further said that staff duties within enclosures be assigned according to the level of associated risk. He called for strict monitoring of all poultry farms in line with safety protocols and tight control over the movement of poultry products. He directed the health department to assess the potential impact of bird flu on humans to prevent any risk of transmission to the public. The CM said that zoo authorities should be in regular contact with institutions like the Central Zoo Authority, National Centre for Disease Control, ministry of health, department of fisheries and dairy, and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, to seek advice and implement necessary action accordingly. At the same time, Gorakhpur health officials had collected blood samples from over 100 staff members of the Zoo, especially, those who were in touch with the Tigress Shakti. Their reports are expected by Wednesday, said Dr Yogesh Singh, the veterinary doctor at the Gorakhpur Zoo. He added that the entire zoo premises was sanitized. Dr Singh maintained that all animals, approximately 300 in number, present in Gorakhpur Zoo, were healthy and showed no signs of infection during their examination conducted on Tuesday.

The development comes a day after the Union Home Ministry's directives to states to conduct mock drills on May 7 to enhance civil defence preparedness. The Union Home Ministry asked the states to operationalise air raid warning sirens and train civilians to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack. The states have also been directed to update and rehearse evacuation plans, crash blackout measures, and early camouflaging of vital plants and installations. Interacting with media persons, the UP DGP Prashant Kumar said that the Centre had identified 19 districts-- one placed in Category 1, two in Category 2 and the remaining 16 in Category 3-- for the exercise. He explained that the exercise would involve coordinated participation from multiple agencies, including the police administration, fire services, and disaster response agencies, to cope with disasters and other critical situations. The mock drill is imperative to ensure better coordination and readiness among all response agencies, said Prashant Kumar. Meanwhile, DG Civil Defence, Abhay Prasad also confirmed the instructions received from the Centre, explaining preparations were already underway to equip civilians with the knowledge and readiness needed in case of any future conflict. As part of the initiative, an assessment of emergency medical infrastructure, response time, and coordination between various agencies would be assessed in the event of mass casualties and large-scale evacuations. The drill would also foster greater public awareness and resilience in times of national crisis, said a senior state government official.

GORAKHPUR: A woman allegedly facing continuous harassment for dowry by her in-laws died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur after getting a phone call from her husband who gave her 'triple talaq', police said on Thursday. Police suspended a sub-inspector and ordered a departmental inquiry for failing to lodge a case on a complaint regarding dowry harassment, they said. Saniya allegedly ended her life after a call from her husband -- who lives in Maharashtra -- on Monday evening. She returned to her maternal home in Gorakhpur on April 26. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Grover suspended Sub-Inspector Jay Prakash Singh for failing to act on an earlier complaint lodged by the victims family. According to police officials, Saniyas mother, Asiya, had approached the Chauri Chaura police station alleging dowry harassment by her in-laws. SI Singh allegedly dismissed the complaint and refused to register a case. An internal inquiry led by Additional SP North Jitendra Kumar Srivastava later confirmed that Saniya had indeed visited the station, but no case was filed. Taking serious note of the lapse, the SSP ordered a departmental inquiry and placed the officer under suspension. An FIR has been lodged against eight persons, including Saniya's husband Salauddin, who is a resident of Maharashtras Rasayani area. The FIR states that Salauddin pronounced triple talaq over a phone call on Monday evening and allegedly abused Saniya during the call. Distressed by the incident, she took her own life later that night, it said. The complainant said her daughter married Salauddin on August 7, 2023, and a dowry was given as per the family's demands. However, Saniya was allegedly subjected to repeated harassment by her husband, his mother Saira, sisters-in-law Aasiya, Khushboo, and Rozi, and brothers-in-law Zia-ul-Auddin and Balauddin. Despite several attempts to resolve the matter, the harassment continued, she said. Salauddin had at one point arranged a separate accommodation for Saniya but later abandoned her. She returned to her maternal home in Gorakhpur on April 26, the complaint said. Asiya added that Saniya continued to messages through her younger sisters phone. Unable to cope with the mental trauma, Saniya took the extreme step, she said. Police said a detailed probe is underway in the matter.

Six dead as sudden rain, thunderstorm hit UP; CM calls for survey on crop losses
LUCKNOW: Six lives were lost due to a lightning strike as the weather took a turn resulting in a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds with hail storm at certain places across UP on Thursday. Though people got some relief from sweltering heat wave like conditions, farmers suffered losses due to damage to standing and harvested crops in the fields. As per the IMD sources, such weather conditions are likely to continue for next three days in the state. The skies were shrouded with dark clouds since Thursday morning in state capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, NCR along with 25 cities across the state. The districts of the Terai region, including Bahraich, Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri had a hailstorm followed by heavy rains destroying the standing crop of wheat and mango. Officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the weather took the turn after the Westerly winds from the Arabian Sea and easterly from the Bay of Bengal collided. While the actual assessment of the loss and damage to crops would take time, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a quick survey of the damage to the crops and asked officials to conduct field visits for the same. The CM issued orders for all District Magistrates, SDMs, and Tehsildars to visit the affected areas immediately and carry out a detailed survey so that the compensation against the damages can be disbursed directly to the farmers' accounts within 24 hours. He warned the district administrations against negligence and laxity. Following the survey, compensation for crop losses will be provided by the Revenue Department in collaboration with insurance companies. Additionally, the Relief Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami issued an alert due to the ongoing bad weather urging people to step out of their homes only when absolutely necessary. Moreover, the Relief Commissioner asked the DMs, SDMs and Tehsildars, to upload the field survey reports over damage to the crops on the department's portal as soon as possible. It is important to note that compensation will only be provided to farmers whose crops suffered more than 33 percent damage due to floods, hailstorms, and unseasonal rains. Meanwhile, the mango growers of Lucknows mango belt, Malihabad and adjoining Barabanki sounded concerned for the crop as thunderstorms caused the immature fruit to fall, leading to some losses. However, the rain, mango growers said, would certainly help the fruit increase its size and sweetness. Malihabad produces Dussehri, Langda, Lucknauva Safeda, and Chausa. Dussehri is the earliest ripening variety, followed by Langda, Lucknauva Safeda, and Chausa. At this stage, fruit has formed for every variety, but in different sizes. Since the thrust and speed of wind in Malihabad on Thursday were not very high, the windfall was not expected to be severe.

Invest UP, the nodal agency for attracting and tracking investments, is set to create this extensive database to enhance transparency in the land allotment process. As per the official spokesperson, Invest UP would also provide real-time insights into the status of vacant and allotted plots, the establishment of industries, and the implementation progress of various projects across multiple industrial authorities in the state. This initiative would encompass key industrial authorities, including: Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA), Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA), Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA), and Satharia Industrial Development Authority (SIDA), said the official spokesperson. A detailed land bank analysis would be conducted across these authorities. Skilled survey agencies would be appointed to map the occupancy status of allotted plots, track the progress of industrial units, and assess vacant plots, ensuring a data-driven approach to industrial planning and development. The spokespersons said that Invest UP would oversee the entire database creation process to ensure seamless and transparent land allocation. The appointed survey agencies would conduct onsite and offsite monitoring of industrial land, compile detailed reports on unit operations, construction, and development activities on industrial plots, ensure industrial land was used strictly for its intended purpose and report any violations, and facilitate comparative efficiency studies across different authorities, expediting the transparent allotment of vacant industrial plots. The intent to implement the database system is to reinforce Yogi governments commitment to industrial expansion, investment facilitation, and transparent governance, paving the way for UP becoming an industrial hub.

The organizational restructuring comes ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to seek a third consecutive term. The party has divided the state into 98 districts across six zonesWest, Braj, Awadh, Kashi, Gorakhpur, and Kanpur-Bundelkhand. The remaining 28 district presidents are expected to be announced in the coming days. According to the list, 39 of the newly appointed district presidents belong to the general category, 25 are from Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and six are from the Scheduled Caste communities. Five women have also been named as district presidents, an increase from the previous four. With this restructuring, the BJP has taken steps to expand leadership opportunities for women. The party has also followed its policy of ensuring that no district president serves more than two consecutive terms. Mahendra Nath Pandey, the partys state election in-charge, confirmed that caste representation was considered in the selection process. The party has set an age limit of 45 to 60 years for district presidents, though exceptions were made in Rae Bareli and Farrukhabad for Scheduled Caste and OBC candidates. The announcement of BJPs district presidents comes against the backdrop of the Samajwadi Partys PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) strategy, which is believed to have played a role in reducing the BJPs seat tally from 62 to 33 in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJPs organizational election process began in November 2024. In December, elections were held for 1,62,459 booth committees, followed by the selection of 1,918 mandal presidents. The entire process was monitored online by the partys state general secretary (organization) Dharampal Singh and election in-charge Mahendra Nath Pandey from the BJPs state headquarters in Lucknow. Following the district-level appointments, the party is now expected to proceed with the selection of a new state president.
Those who called Maha Kumbh 'Mrityu Kumbh' unable to control disturbance during Holi: Adityanath
GORAKHPUR: Hitting out at his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee over her remarks criticising Maha Kumbh arrangements, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Sunday those who had said the Maha Kumbh of Prayagraj was a 'Mrityu Kumbh' were unable to control disturbance during Holi. Addressing the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected office bearers of the Gorakhpur Journalists Press Club in Gorakhpur, he said that for the first time, people came to the Maha Kumbh from Tamil Nadu. People (devotees) also came from Kerala. The population of Uttar Pradesh is 25 crores, and the Holi concluded peacefully. But, in West Bengal, a number of disturbances took place during Holi, he said. On the day of Holi, a 20-year-old youth was killed in a scuffle during celebrations in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. Akash Choudhury, alias Amar, was accosted by three to four youths while celebrating Holi with his friends near his residence in Titagarh. As an argument broke out, he was repeatedly stabbed in his neck and other parts of his body by the assailants, the officer added. Holi violence in Uttar Pradesh: Clashes over caste, music, and altercations leave several injured Adityanath took a dig at Banerjee over such incidents in her state. People who were unable to control the disturbance ('upadrav') during Holi, had said that the Maha Kumbh of Prayagraj was a 'Mrityu Kumbh'. But, we said that this is not 'Mrityu' (death), it is 'Mrityunjay' (victory over death) It is a Maha Kumbh. He said that everyday of the Maha Kumbh witnessed 50,000 to 1 lakh people from West Bengal taking part in the 45-day event. Days after the January 29 stampeded at the Sangam Nose, where the official toll was 30, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said the Maha Kumbh has turned into a Mrityu Kumbh due to such incidents of stampede, claiming the actual toll was suppressed by authorities. They have hidden hundreds of bodies to bring down the toll. The Maha Kumbh has turned into a 'Mrityu Kumbh' under the BJP rule, Banerjee said during an address in the West Bengali assembly on February 18. Back in Gorakhpur, Adityanath also said his government sent ministers to some states to invite governors and chief ministers to the Maha Kumbh, and if possible also hold a press (conference). He also thanked the media for helping the Maha Kumbh transform into the biggest event of the world through their positive writings. He said the Kumbh became a base to connect society with the idea of Ek Bharat, Shresth Bharat. For the first time, it was seen that culture can fuel prosperity, faith can become a medium of livelihood. He told the journalists, Whatever support you require to take positive role of the media forward, the government will stand with you. Internet suspended in Bengal's Birbhum till March 17 after Holi clash, BJP likens state to Bangladesh Adityanath said several freedom fighters played an important role as journalists and gave momentum to the freedom movement through their work in media. These include Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi and others who gave a new direction to society with the their writings, he said. Adityanath also said that when the country's democracy was being strangled, news groups put all their strength to save the democracy through their writings. He underlined the ever-evolving role of the media in the changing world. Today, technology is changing rapidly... today the young generation is using social media platforms because they have less time. In such a situation, the responsibility of media institutions has increased even more to convey positive things because some people are spreading negativity by misusing social media platforms. In such a situation, the media world will have to move forward with the same role for which it is known. This will be a big task not only for democracy but also for the security and sovereignty of the country, he said. The UP chief minister said the first condition of good governance and democracy is dialogue, and media can promote dialogue. During the programme, Gorakhpur Mayor Dr Manglesh Shrivastava administered the oath to the newly elected office bearers. Adityanath handed over the election certificates to the newly elected office-bearers of the Press Club and congratulated them, the UP government said in a statement.
