UP CM orders authorities to step up road safety measures following several crashes due to dense fog

LUCKNOW: Following the Yamuna Expressway accident, which claimed 13 lives in the Mathura stretch, UP CM Yogi Adityanath reviewed expressway safety with NHAI and state highway officials on Wednesday. He ordered stricter measures to avert any such incident in future under foggy conditions. CM directed the authorities concerned to increase patrolling, field inspections, deployment of teams at all black spots, installation of reflectors, and 247 availability of cranes and ambulances on expressways. The highway authorities in the state intensified safety measures on expressways and national highways to prevent road accidents amid dense fog conditions during the winter season. As per the senior officials, a day after multiple fog-linked crashes leading to the loss of multiple lives, across the state, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the nodal authority operating key access-controlled highways including the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway and Gorakhpur Link Expressway, moved to put enhanced precautions in place. At least 25 people were killed and 59 were injured in a series of accidents attributed to poor visibility, with the worst incident reported from the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura, where a multi-vehicle pile-up claimed 13 lives. Four people each were killed in Basti and Unnao, while two fatalities were reported each from Meerut and Barabanki, said the officials on Wednesday. According to UPEIDA Nodal Officer Rajesh Pandey, fog-related accidents this season began on Tuesday. Most of the accidents, including those on the Purvanchal and Lucknow-Agra Expressways, were rear-end collisions caused by poor visibility. Pandey said UPEIDA was set to send a proposal to the state government soon to reduce the maximum speed limit on expressways from the current 120 kmph to 80 kmph during the fog period, which generally lasted until February 15. He said special advisories were being issued for two-wheeler riders, allowed on expressways. During fog, we request motorcyclists to halt at toll plazas. We are making arrangements for blankets and basic facilities for them, Pandey, a former IPS officer and SSP Lucknow, said. UPEIDA has also activated public address systems at all toll plazas to make real-time announcements about fog conditions ahead based on inputs from patrol teams, he said. Pamphlets containing safety guidelines, do's and don'ts, and emergency helpline numbers, including 14449, are also being distributed among commuters. Pandey reiterated that parking on expressways is strictly prohibited. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also launched a statewide drive to improve visibility and awareness among road users during winter fog. Officials said the speed limit on highways under NHAI is 100 kmph and stressed that besides fog, wrong-side driving and unauthorised entry and exit through highway cuts remain major causes of accidents. Authorities have urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe distances and strictly follow advisories as dense fog conditions are expected to persist across the state in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, CM Yogi ordered the authorities to ensure safe traffic management on expressways during poor visibility. Proper arrangements should be ensured in dense fog. Street and lane lighting should be checked continuously. If any light is faulty, it should be fixed immediately. Officers should inspect to ensure no person is found sleeping in the open, the CM directed the officials at the review meeting. He also asked the local administrations to make proper arrangements for the homeless during the cold wave. The homeless should be taken to rain shelters. Blankets should be continuously distributed to the needy. Bonfires should be arranged at public places. Meanwhile, an intense cold wave is sweeping the state. The conditions are such that dew drops are falling like drizzle in the foggy weather with zero visibility. On Wednesday, 50 districts including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj were in the grip of fog. Zero visibility was recorded in many places. Due to fog, more than 30 accidents have occurred in the last four days in the state. During this period, more than 150 vehicles collided.

Elevation above caste & dynasty politics: BJPs new UP chief takes over

LUCKNOW: Union Minister of State (MoS) for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary was on Sunday appointed as the president of the BJPs Uttar Pradesh unit, ending months of speculation over who would secure the coveted position. Chaudhury extended his gratitude to the party leadership on the occasion, saying, Only in the BJP can an ordinary party worker like me be elevated to role of leadership like this. The decision is guided neither by dynastic politics nor caste politics. The announcement was made in the presence of CM Yogi Adityanath and Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak. Union Minister Piyush Goyal and party national general secretary Vinod Tawde were also present. A seven-time Lok Sabha MP from Maharajganj, Chaudhary is the fourth Kurmi leader to lead the party in the states history. Chaudhary had filed his nomination papers for the post on Saturday. The 61-year-old is also a prominent OBC leader from Gorakhpur, the stronghold of UP CM Yogi Adityanath in eastern Uttar Pradesh. His name was proposed by the CM himself. The partys decision to name him as the state unit chief seems to have been shaped by the its electoral setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the OBC voter base drifted away from it. Chaudhurys election was finalised reportedly keeping in mind the partys electoral strategy for the Assembly elections slated for early 2027 as well as the three-tier panchayat polls due in the middle of next year. Chaudhary assured party workers that they are of prime importance for him. I will fight for you and will become adamant for your rights. I will always be available to listen to you as karyakarta (worker), karyakram (events), karyalaya (office) and kosh (treasury) all these four factors are significant for any organisation, he said.

MoS Pankaj Chaudhary likely to be new UP BJP chief; CM, nine other leaders propose his name

LUCKNOW: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to get its party chief for the Uttar Pradesh unit on Sunday. The nomination process for the election of the new state chief took place at the BJP headquarters in the state capital here on Saturday afternoon, with Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary leading the race. Chaudhary filed his papers, and his name was proposed by 10 senior BJP leaders, including UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. According to sources, Chaudhary is almost certain to get elected unopposed, as no other leader has filed nomination papers. However, a day ahead of the nomination process, BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh arrived in Lucknow and met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. An organisational meeting was also held at CMs residence on Friday night. Amid intense political activity, Union Minister Piyush Goel, appointed as the election officer by the party, arrived in Lucknow on Saturday along with central election observer Vinod Tawde, and Pankaj Chaudhary who is believed to be a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. While Pankaj Chaudhary was being considered as the front-runner for the post of UP BJP chief, the arrival of former Union Minister Sadhvi Nirajan Jyoti at the party office on Saturday morning added to the buzz of voting, as she is also being considered as a candidate. Moreover, the name of Union Minister BL Verma had also been doing the rounds for the post. The party chief was supposed to be elected in January 2025, but was delayed due to assembly elections in Maharashtra and Bihar. According to party leaders, Piyush Goyal will complete the election process on Sunday. BJP sources said that the party had zeroed in on an OBC face in Pankaj Chaudhary to lead the state. Chaudhary, a seven-time BJP MP from the Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency of eastern Uttar Pradesh, is regarded as one of the party's cadre. He started his political career in Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation. In 2024, he defeated Congress candidate Virendra Chaudhary by a margin of over 35,000 votes to enter the Union Cabinet. A prominent OBC Kurmi leader, Chaudhury filed his nomination on Saturday in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with several senior party leaders and central representatives. Hailing from Gorakhpur, Chaudhary is being seen as a choice by the party to counter the oppositions PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) narrative, while also consolidating OBC support ahead of the panchayat elections next year and the 2027 Assembly polls. Chaudhury has been a member of the Union Cabinet since 2021. If elected as the Uttar Pradesh BJP president, he would become the fourth Kurmi leader to head the party in the state, following Swatantra Dev Singh, Vinay Katiyar, and Om Prakash Singh. He is set to replace Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a Jat leader from Moradabad.

IM operative Shadab Beg back under scanner after new links to Faridabad University emerge

LUCKNOW: Indian Mujahideen operative Mirza Shadab Beg of Azamgarh, wanted in connection with several serial blasts across the country, is once again under the scrutiny of probe agencies following new intelligence inputs linking him to Al Falah University in Faridabad. According to UP ATS sources, Beg completed his BTech in Electronics and Instrumentation from Al Falah University around 2007. Investigators suspect he came in contact with extremist networks during his student years and later used his technical training to support bomb-making activities and arrange logistics for the Indian Mujahideen. Records show that Beg was a key accused in the 2007 Gorakhpur blast and the serial bombings in Jaipur and Ahmedabad in 2008. Officials say he was part of core IM modules responsible for reconnaissance, procurement of explosives and the supply of critical components such as detonators and metal bearings used in the attacks. Property linked to Beg has been seized in Uttar Pradesh after his name surfaced in connection with Al Falah University. He has remained on central agencies most-wanted lists for years. Back home, his family claims that Beg, who left 18 years ago, never returned, and they only received occasional information about his movements after he went missing. Intelligence inputs suggest he went underground soon after the 2008 blasts to evade crackdowns on IM operatives. Agencies now believe he has been absconding for nearly two decades, making him one of the longest-surviving fugitives associated with the outfit. Sources also claim that Beg visited Afghanistan in 2019. Investigators are probing the support channels that helped him leave India and exploring his suspected links with regional extremist groups. The recent Delhi terror blast has intensified scrutiny of Al Falah University, with security agencies reviewing old student records and networks to determine whether Beg attempted to recruit others on campus. Sources said efforts are under way to trace Beg and dismantle any remaining networks linked to him.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath highlights sharp drop in crime, inaugurates modern forensic lab

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reflected on the states law-and-order situation on Tuesday, emphasising that crime in the state had sharply decreased. Criminals are now caught quickly and punished, said CM Yogi, adding that if a robbery or snatching occurred, the offender could be seen limping the next day. The Chief Minister made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Gorakhpur during the inauguration of a modern forensic laboratory. He also reviewed law-and-order work and held a Janata Darbar to hear public grievances. CM Yogi asserted that crime no longer occurred freely in Uttar Pradesh. This is a new Uttar Pradesh that does not tolerate crime and ensures punishment, he said. The modern forensic laboratory, inaugurated by the Chief Minister, was built at a cost of Rs 72.78 crore. Yogi said the FSL lab was part of the governments zero-tolerance policy towards crime. To support his point, he cited improved womens participation in the workforce due to enhanced security. Prior to 2017, only 13 per cent of women in the state were working. The figure has now risen to 35 per cent, as women feel safer going out for work, he claimed. The Chief Minister also highlighted that 2,19,000 police personnel had been recruited over the past eight years. Many states do not have such a large police force. Recently, 60,244 new police recruits joined the service. In 2017, the government had to rely on military and paramilitary training centres due to limited capacity, but the state now has sufficient training facilities of its own, he added. CM Yogi further noted that following a 2016 Supreme Court directive for Safe Cities, Uttar Pradesh now has 17 municipal corporations, with Noida and Greater Noida linked to an Integrated Command and Control Centre. Over 13 lakh CCTV cameras have been installed across these areas to provide round-the-clock surveillance.

Diabetes surges among young Indians; need for early screening: Experts

NEW DELHI: Indias battle against diabetes is entering a new phase as diagnostic data warn of a marked rise in the disease among younger adults, experts said on Thursday on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. Type 2 diabetes, which was reported among older adults, is now increasingly being detected in people in their twenties and early thirties, a shift experts describe as both alarming and preventable. Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Chair and Head, Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare and former Honorary President of AIIMS Gorakhpur, said, India finds itself at a critical juncture in its diabetes response, where the sheer scale of young-adult onset is now meeting the tools to intervene early. It is crucial that everyone, especially those aged 25 and above, undergo at least an annual screening to catch early metabolic changes and act before complications develop, he said. Alongside regular testing, adopting a balanced diet rich in fibre, whole grains, and traditional foods such as millets can significantly improve insulin sensitivity and help maintain long-term metabolic health. For individuals struggling with obesity, lifestyle interventions remain the cornerstone, and in select cases, medically supervised weight-management therapies may complement these efforts to reduce diabetes risk, he added. The challenge now is to transition from identifying disease to intercepting it, to make metabolic screening, risk-profiling, and follow-up a routine part of health checks for young adults, not just middle-aged adults. If this generational shift takes root, the pipeline of complications, organ damage, and lifelong medication dependence can be dramatically altered, said the Padma Bhushan awardee. According to the 2023 Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study India has an estimated 101 million people with diabetes, 136 million pre diabetics and 315 million people with hypertension in 2021. The study, which ICMR coordinated with Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), found the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes of 11.4% and 15.3%, respectively, in India. According to the latest findings from Mahajan Imaging and Labs, one of Delhi NCRs leading integrated diagnostic chains, there has been a significant surge in metabolic and glucose screenings among adults under 40 in 2025. Of those tested, nearly 38% of fasting glucose results, 20% of HbA1c readings, and 35% of post-prandial glucose outcomes were abnormal, with a notable proportion of critical cases identified early. The high percentage of abnormal findings among young adults underscores both a growing metabolic risk and the impact of expanded preventive screening. This trend reinforces urgent calls for early intervention and proactive care, said experts. Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Founder and Chairman, Mahajan Imaging and Labs said, We are witnessing a clear metabolic shift in Indias younger population. People in their twenties and thirties, who appear to be fit, appear to show early signs of insulin resistance. More of them are getting tested early, an encouraging sign that prevention is finally being taken seriously. Diabetes is not just a blood glucose value; it reflects a broader metabolic imbalance. Left unchecked, it can lead to complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, amputations, and fatty liver. Blood glucose, like blood pressure, can serve as an early warning sign, he added. Modern diagnostic tools, including fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, fructosamine, C-peptide, adiponectin and leptin, MODY genetic tests, autoantibody screening, and continuous glucose monitoring with HbA1c, allow early detection of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. Integrating these tests with routine screening enables timely intervention, helping young adults prevent long-term complications, said the Padma Shri. The real progress in diabetes prevention will come from integrating routine lab diagnostics with emerging molecular tools. Traditional metrics like HbA1c or fasting glucose are essential, but when combined with markers that map inflammation and metabolic stress, we start identifying risk years before diabetes sets in. This convergence of preventive pathology, genomics, and data analytics is transforming how we understand and predict metabolic disease in Indias young population, said Dr Shelly Mahajan, Lab Director and Clinical Lead, Mahajan Imaging and Labs. Experts say the rise in screening volumes across diagnostic centres aligns with Indias growing focus on preventive and genomic testing, both in private healthcare and through national programmes. The government initiative, which integrates community-level screening for diabetes and hypertension, has been expanding across districts to improve early detection and disease tracking. While traditional tests like fasting glucose and HbA1c remain central to diabetes monitoring, experts caution against an over-reliance on single markers. The emerging consensus is on a more holistic, data-driven approach that includes body composition tracking, genomic risk mapping, and metabolic profiling, not as a luxury, but as a frontline preventive strategy. Experts said the countrys response must now focus on early risk identification, continuous monitoring, and lifestyle modification, especially among the working-age population. The consensus is clear that Indias youth are both the most vulnerable and the most capable of reversing the countrys diabetes trajectory through awareness, timely screening, and proactive care, they said.

Vande Mataram rendition to be mandatory in all UP schools: Yogi

LUCKNOW: Singing Vande Mataram will be made compulsory in educational institutions across Uttar Pradesh, CM Yogi Adityanath said on Monday. Addressing an Ekta Yatra (Unity March) event in Gorakhpur to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the national song, he said this step would inspire feelings of reverence and pride among citizens towards the motherland. There should be a sense of respect for Vande Mataram, he stressed, noting that anybody opposing the national song is insulting the countrys unity and integrity. Every citizen of India must stand united for this cause, the Chief Minister emphasised, adding, There is no point in opposing the Vande Mataram. No religion or caste can be greater than the country. We must set aside beliefs that hinder national unity. Notably, the move comes days after a political row erupted over the national song when Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that dropping key stanzas of the song in 1937 had sown the seeds of Partition and that such a divisive mindset remained a challenge for the country. The remarks were widely interpreted as an attack on the Congress. The BJP also accused the Congress of pandering to a communal agenda under Jawaharlal Nehrus leadership by adopting a truncated version of the song that year. The Congress hit back sharply, alleging that Modi had insulted the 1937 Congress Working Committee and Rabindranath Tagore, who had suggested adopting only the first two stanzas. Road quality non-negotiable, officers and contractors to be held accountable: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari discussed Indias recent infrastructure developments with TNIE , citing a 60% expansion of the national highway network to over 1.46 lakh km. He outlined ongoing projects worth Rs 12.20 lakh crore, major highway corridors, city ring roads, reforms in land acquisition and environmental clearances, measures to ensure road maintenance accountability, the rollout of GPS-based toll collection, and Bihars progress relative to other states. Excerpts Q) The country has seen a massive expansion of its national highway network in recent years. What is the current status of this growth? Indias national highway network has surged from 91,287 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km today, a 60% increase. Currently, 48,536 km of projects worth Rs 12.20 lakh crore are underway, with completed schemes totaling Rs 16 lakh crore and upcoming projects at Rs 15 lakh crore. Sixteen major highway corridors, including the Arunachal Frontier Highway (Rs 30,000 crore) and ShillongSilchar Greenfield Highway (Rs 23,000 crore), have been sanctioned to boost regional connectivity. Ring roads in cities like Ayodhya, Kanpur, and Guwahati aim to ease congestion. In 11 years, 1.06 lakh km of highways have been constructed, with the ministrys budget rising ninefold to Rs 2.87 lakh crore. Q) Some projects still face delays in projects caused by land acquisition and environmental clearance issues? Land acquisition falls under state governments, while environmental clearances involve multiple departments, making coordination key. Reducing delays is a test of effective leadership. We prioritise sustainable planning, ensuring timely land acquisition and fast-track approvals for forest, wildlife, and environmental clearances. At least 90% of land and clearance requirements must now be completed before project awards.Regular meetings with state officials and the PM Gati Shakti initiative have streamlined inter-ministerial coordination. Digital portals, Bhoomi Amount Digital Portal for land and Parivesh for environmental approvals simplify processes, accelerating project delivery and enhancing efficiency nationwide. Q) India has seen record construction of highways in recent years but their maintenance still seems to be a challenge. For each fault, we (the Central Government) are held responsible. About 80 percent of complaints on social media are not under our jurisdiction or do not pertain to national highways (NHs). Our roads are of good quality; however, there have been some problems. We are continuously improving the technology and will definitely address these issues. Regarding accountability, we are serious about ensuring that officers and contractors are responsible if roads are not maintained properly. There should be no compromise with quality, and we are committed to fixing lapses wherever they occur to maintain high standards. Q) How long will it take to implement the GPS based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system? It has already started at some locations and will be introduced at 4 to 6 places from November 15. We will move further gradually, expanding the initiative step by step while monitoring progress and ensuring smooth implementation at each stage. Q) With Bihar heading into elections, how does the state compare to others in development across key sectors like water, power, transport, and roads? Bihar needs accelerated development compared to other states. Water, power, transport and roads are the basic requirements for progress. The developmental work undertaken by our government, in the last 10-11 years, has transformed the face of Bihar. Business and industries are growing steadily in Bihar. The young people of Bihar see their future in development and employment. They do not bother about Jaat (Caste), Pant (Community), Dharma (Religion) and Bhasha (Language). They aspire to excel in education, seek better job opportunities, and want to actively contribute to the nations growth. I think that the state has sufficient electricity supply. Irrigation has significantly improved. The road infrastructure has also got better. Earlier, the Ganga had just two bridges, now we have 13. In the highway sector; projects worth Rs five lakh crores are going on. Projects having a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh crores either have been completed or on the verge of completion. Some will start soon. We are building big highways; Varanasi-Kolkata highways cost of Rs 40,000 crores and Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway is worth Rs 50,000 crores. All these highways will change the landscape of Bihar. With a strong and vast network of highways and robust power sector, the industry will reach the state naturally and will ensure Bihar's comprehensive development. Q) Staying on with politics, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi recently held a press conference in which he alleged Vote Chori In Haryana elections. He along with other opposition parties has been questioning Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which started in Bihar. How do you see this issue? Rahul Gandhi speaks for himself. Even his party people don't take him seriously. There is no need to respond to his baseless comments.

Police dogs Jack and Rambo help Haryana cops bust illegal arms cache

CHANDIGARH: Usually, tales of police bravery focus on human heroes. But in a recent major breakthrough under Operation Jeevan Jyoti, Haryana Police credited two four-legged warriorsJack and Rambofor their extraordinary scent-detection abilities. The canines, working seamlessly with the police, detected a hidden secret chamber in a house in Gorakhpur village, Fatehabad. Inside the concealed space, the police recovered a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition: four illicit firearms, 14 live cartridges, and 20 liters of lahan (raw liquor used for making illegal alcohol). Haryana Director General of Police OP Singh praised the operation, saying that canines like Jack and Rambo are not just members of the police force but real heroes. These dogs serve as our eyes and nose in the field and have proven highly effective in dismantling criminal networks, he said. He added that Haryana Police is working under a strict zero-tolerance policy against criminals, and such operations will continue in the future. On Monday morning, the police team led by Bhuna Police Station in-charge Sub-Inspector Om Prakash reached Gorakhpur for a raid based on a secret tip-off, with Jack and Rambo accompanying them. Upon reaching the spot, Jacks alert behavior and sharp sense of smell signaled suspicion, focusing on a specific part of the house. Rambo followed the same lead, reinforcing the suspicion and guiding the police team further. The alertness of both canines prompted the SWAT commando unit to act swiftly, leading to the discovery of the hidden chamber. Inside, authorities found a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition, including a double-barreled gun, three country-made pistols, 14 live cartridges, and 20 liters of lahan. This success under Operation Jeevan Jyoti has dealt a severe blow to the criminal network while boosting public confidence in the police. SIR campaign commences in Uttar Pradesh, State's final voter list to be out on February 7 2026

LUCKNOW: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign to revamp the voter list in Uttar Pradesh commenced with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting door-to-door on Tuesday. The voter list updated through SIR will serve as a crucial foundation for the 2027 Assembly elections. Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) have deployed strong teams at each booth for the campaign. Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has assigned responsibilities to booth presidents, sector presidents, and Booth Level Agents (BLAs), who have undergone training. Congress and other parties are working to strengthen booths according to their capacities. Uttar Pradesh has over 15.44 crore voters with over 1.62 lakh booths across the state. As per the Chief Electoral Office sources, BLOs of more than 1.62 lakh booths commenced the door-to-door campaign from Tuesday. The final voter list of SIR would be published on February 7, 2026. Before it, based on BLO reports, Electoral Registration Officers (EROS) of each assembly constituency will release draft voter lists on December 9, 2025. The sources added that voters and political parties would submit claims and objections from December 9 to January 8, 2026, and the EROs would resolve them from December 9 to January 31, 2026. West Bengal SIR: What voters need to know before BLOs visit their homes Under the Election Commission's new system, a maximum of 1200 voters will now be at one booth, making it easier to contact them and conduct voting on election day. Officials at the CEO's office said that this would increase the number of polling booths in the state from 1.62 lakh to over 1.82 lakh. In the wake of the commencement of the campaign, the BJP, sticking to its strategy of winning the booth means winning the election. With this mantra, the party has made plans to prepare voter lists based on this same mantra. The ruling party has already appointed coordinators for SIR in Awadh, Kashi, West, Braj, Gorakhpur and Kanpur regions, along with setting up war rooms. All regional coordinators have been instructed to sit in the war room daily. They have to talk to district and assembly coordinators connected to their region daily and take reports. BJP's war room will also be set up in each district along with the region. A team of at least 10 workers will be deployed in it. The team will be present in the war room from morning to evening. The BJP has also assigned responsibility to MPs and MLAs in SIR. All MPs of the state and 2024 candidates, MLAs and defeated candidates of 2022 have been given the responsibility of getting voter lists printed. They have to set up a war room in the assembly constituency and review SIR work at their booths every five days. They need to stay in contact with Mandal and Booth daily. Weekly review would be done by the team of MLAs and defeated candidates. Similarly, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has deputed teams of six persons at each booth regarding SIR. Booth President, Booth General Secretary, and three Booth Secretaries will assist the Booth Level Agent (BLA). They will also help the BLA in gathering information about each voter by going door-to-door. The BSP has assigned responsibility to sector presidents for monitoring booth-level teams. Each sector has 10 to 12 booths. In each sector, a team of 11 people, including the president, is working. They have also been given booth-wise monitoring responsibility. DMK asks Supreme Court to stop SIR in Tamil Nadu Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has also geared up for SIR. As per the party's national spokesperson and former MLC Udayvir Singh, SP is deploying agents at the booth level who will coordinate between the Election Commission and the general voters. Booth-level agents have been asked to ensure that no voter's name is left out of being included in the voter list. Booth-level agents are being deployed as PDA guards. Moreover, party MPs and MLAs have also been given responsibilities in their respective areas of monitoring the campaign. A helpline centre is also being set up at the Samajwadi Party headquarters, where help will be provided by the party if anyone faces any difficulty. As per the party sources, special instructions have been given to help those who do not have houses or land. Similarly, Congress is lagging behind a bit as far as the preparations for SIR are concerned. The party is engaged in the process of deploying BLA-1 at all 1.62 lakh booths in the state. November 6 has been set as the deadline for this process. From November 7, they will start their work at the booth level. Congress has created a connecting centre for monitoring the entire process.

Aviation growth story piggybacking on foreign travel: AAI report

NEW DELHI: The growing desire for international travel continues to fuel Indias aviation growth story. The Air Traffic Report, made public on Wednesday, shows that 3.95 crore passengers travelled abroad from India between April and September 2025, up from 3.69 crore during the same period in 2024. Among them, Bagdogra and Coimbatore posted remarkable increases of 51% (13,492 flyers) and 50.5% (1,60,597 flyers), respectively, in AprilSeptember 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Among major airports, both Delhi and Mumbai reported negative growth in domestic travel. The closure of Terminal 2 at IGIA and changes in flight schedules significantly impacted Delhis numbers, which dropped by 5.8% to 2,64,91,445 passengers, compared to 2,81,07,645 last year. Mumbai saw a 0.8% dip, handling 1,91,02,987 passengers. Indian Railways starts playing Chhath songs at over 100 stations across nation

NEW DELHI: Ahead of Bihars Chhath festival, Indian Railways has introduced a unique arrangement of playing popular folk songs dedicated to the Chhath festival at over 100 prominent stations across the country. In the first phase, this initiative has been implemented at 30 different stations, where announcements of train departures or arrivals pause for a while. During these intervals, folk songs sung by well-known singers such as Sharda Sinha, Nitu Kumari Navgeet, Vindyavasni Devi and others are played when no train information is being broadcast over the automated announcement system. The Railways has started playing Chhatha songs at more than 30 stations in Bihar, including Patna, Danapur, Hajipur, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Sonepur and others. Similar arrangements for playing Chhatha songs have also been made at New Delhi, Ghaziabad and Anand Vihar Terminal, which are now witnessing heavy footfall of passengers travelling to Bihar and other Hindi-speaking states for the festival. Confirming this to the newspaper, ED (I&P) Dileep Kumar of the Ministry of Railways said on Friday, Indian Railways has started broadcasting Chhatha songs at railway stations on the auspicious occasion of Chhatha Puja. The aim of this initiative is to connect the passengers with the auspicious spirit of the festival and make their journey more pleasant. This has been launched at almost all those stations that now witness large numbers of Bihar-bound passengers travelling for the Chhatha festival across the country. Savita Kumari, a passenger travelling from Kolkata to Patna with her family members for the Chhatha festival, said These devotional songs being played at railway stations during Chhatha Puja surcharge the ambience of station with religious festivity for the devotees, who either remain in wait to take trains or boarding in trains. A senior railway official told the newspaper that the Chhatha folk songs being played make passengers feel the fragrance of their home and culture, thereby infusing devotion and joy into their journey even when they remain away from their states. Begun on Friday, the initiative through the automatic announcement system will continue for several days after the end of Chhatha, covering the period when passengers make their return journeys. Others stations such as Banaras, Gorakhpur and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, Burdwan, Durgapur and Asansol in West Bengal, as well as Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab, are among the hundreds of stations where this initiative has been introduced. Currently, Indian Railways is operating more than 12,000 special train trips to manage the surge of passengers travelling from across the country to states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where the Chhatha festival is celebrated on a large scale.

'Political Islam' undermined Hindu faith, largely overlooked in history: CM Yogi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that while history often highlights British and French colonialism, the role of political Islam, which he claimed dealt the greatest blow to Sanatan Dharma, is largely overlooked. He highlighted that great warriors like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Guru Gobind Singh, Maharana Pratap, and Maharana Sanga waged battles against political Islam. Our ancestors waged major struggles against political Islam, yet this aspect of history remains largely overlooked, Adityanath said at the 'Vichar-Parivar Kutumb Sneh Milan' and 'Deepotsav Se Rashtrotsav' programmes organised by the Gorakhpur division to mark the centenary year of the RSS. The chief minister lauded the RSS for its pivotal role in the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He claimed that while the nation discusses colonial resistance, it often overlooks the ideological challenge of political Islam. Our ancestors fought not only against the British and French but also against political Islam; heroes like Veer Shivaji and Maharana Pratap stand testimony to this. There is talk of British colonialism, there is talk of French colonialism, but nowhere is there talk of political Islam, which undermined the faith, Adityanath said. He said that during the RSS's 100-year journey, the impossible has been made possible. While members of the Samajwadi Party, the Congress, and the INDIA bloc questioned the Ram temple, RSS volunteers remained steadfast in their resolve that the temple would be built. The Sangh endured restrictions, and its volunteers faced lathi-charge and bullets. Today, the magnificent Ram Temple stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment, he said. Adityanath alleged that activities promoting political Islam continue under various guises. The chief minister said that Uttar Pradesh has banned the sale of Halal-certified products, claiming that profits from such sales were being used for conversion, love jihad, and terrorism. Speaking about the RSS centenary initiatives, Adityanath outlined five key transformations: social harmony, family values, environmental protection, self-reliance through indigenous goods, and civic responsibility, terming them the foundation of a 'Viksit Bharat'. For a developed society and a developed nation, society must lead, and the government must follow, he added.

Ayodhya Mosque trust to come up with new blueprint for approval of authorities

LUCKNOW: The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation the trust overseeing the construction of the proposed mosque in Ayodhya is considering submitting a new design inspired by the local architectural style. Instead of a glass faade and other modern decorative elements, the mosque will now be designed in alignment with local sentiments and traditional aesthetics. As the decision to revise the design was made last year, the trust did not follow up with the local development authority to get the original building plans approved. The day-to-day functioning of the Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation, the trust pursuing the construction of the mosque, is managed by a group of eight life trustees with Zufar Ahmad Faruqi as its Chairman and Athar Husain as Secretary. Faruqi is also the Chairman of the UP Sunni Central Waqf Board. The trust has six more members, including vice-president Adnan Farrukh Shah, a prominent cleric from Gorakhpur, treasurer Faiz Aftab, a Meerut-based businessman, and Mohd Rasheed, Imran Ahmed, Zunaid Siddiqui, and Saud Uz Zaman as members. Rasheed, Ahmed, and Siddiqui are businessmen from Lucknow, while Zaman is from Banda. In addition to the life trustees, several other individuals are associated with the trust in various capacities, contributing insights and participating in different committees. According to Secretary Athar Husain, suggestions for modifying the mosques design came from people in touch with the trust's chairman who had expressed interest in supporting the project. Hence, we are preparing a new blueprint with the help of industry experts and will resubmit our application. There's no need to dwell on the previously rejected proposal, he said. He further added, On behalf of the trust, we would also request the state government to provide a wider access road to the mosque site at Dhannipur in Sohawal. While the previous design took inspiration from Gulf-style mosques, trust officials stated that the revised version will adhere to architectural principles rooted in the Awadh region. The new structure will be built using brick, mortar, and other locally relevant materials. The trust was allotted five acres for the construction of the mosque. Husain reiterated that a significant portion of this land will be used to establish a museum dedicated to Ahmadullah Shah, a maulvi from Faizabad who fought against the British during the 1857 uprising.

Youth killed in clash between smuggler group, villagers in UP; one arrested

GORAKHPUR: A confrontation between villagers and suspected smugglers here spiralled into violence on Tuesday, leaving a 20-year-old man dead, a smuggler critically injured, and senior police officers hurt in stone-pelting. In the early hours of Tuesday, tension flared in Mauachapi village under Pipraich police station limits as news of the youth's death spread. Angry villagers blocked the Gorakhpur-Pipraich road, hurled stones at police, and forced traffic to a standstill. The blockade was lifted only after five hours, following assurances from senior officials. The chain of events began late on Monday night, when 10-12 smugglers arrived in two pickup vans and allegedly tried to break open a furniture shop belonging to one Durgesh Gupta. The shop's upper floor housed a travel agency where a relative was sleeping. On hearing the shutters being forced, he alerted Durgesh's son, Deepak. Deepak rushed to the spot on a scooter, raising an alarm. Nearly 10-15 villagers followed him. Startled, the smugglers opened fire and tried to flee. In the chaos, they dragged Deepak into one of their vehicles and sped away. Meanwhile, villagers caught hold of one smuggler, torched his vehicle, and thrashed him severely. When police reached the scene and attempted to rescue the injured man, locals clashed with them, pelting stones. SP (North) Jitendra Srivastava and Pipraich SHO suffered serious injuries in the melee. Later, police traced Deepak's blood-soaked body around 4 km away, triggering outrage in the area. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and directed senior officials to rush to the spot, assuring that he culprits will not be spared. DIG Shiv S Channappa and SSP Raj Karan Nayyar met the victim's family and promised swift action. District Magistrate Deepak Meena described the incident as extremely tragic and said continuous action was being taken. One accused has been caught. We have spoken to the family, and their demands have been discussed. Whatever assistance can be provided at both local and higher levels will be ensured. First, the post-mortem will be conducted and cremation performed, after which we will again hold talks with the family, he said. Deepak's grieving mother broke down, demanding that her son's killers be given the death penalty. SSP Raj Karan Nayyar, who camped at the site along with senior officials, said the situation was later brought under control, with PAC and additional forces deployed. Meanwhile, Deepak's father, Durgesh Gupta, alleged police negligence, claiming that his son could have been saved if authorities had acted promptly. The family has demanded Rs 1 crore compensation, a government job, and strict action against both the smugglers and erring policemen. SSP Nayyar said the report about the incident was received around 3. 30 am. The smugglers had arrived in two pickup vans, one of which was able to flee the spot while the other got stuck, and the young man (Deepak) had gone after it. One of the people from the stuck pickup van was caught by the villagers, and he was hospitalised. The police immediately reached the spot. The youth (Deepak) received injuries to his head, apparently because of which he unfortunately died. The autopsy report will confirm it. A complaint has been received from the family, and further legal actions have been initiated, Nayyar told reporters. He said some of the accused have been identified, and five police teams are working on the case to quickly apprehend them.

'Counsel staff to introduce themselves to passengers': Railway board takes measures to build trust among travellers

NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways is considering measures to make the On-Board Housekeeping Staff (OBHS) more courteous and leave a positive impression on passengers during their journey. In the new initiative, currently being introduced, proves successful, OBHS personnel will begin introducing themselves to passengers at the start of the journey in an effort to build trust and establish a good rapport with the passengers. With this aim in mind, Indian Railways has instructed all its zones to conduct counselling sessions for OBHS staff. In an official communication issued by the Railway Board to all zones, the railway has proposed system improvements following a recent on-board inspection. These improvements include counselling for the housekeeping staff. All OBHS staff should be counselled to introduce themselves at the beginning of the journey and build trust of passengers, the Railway Board directive stated. The directive also emphasises that OBHS staff should be available to assist passengers throughout the journey. Stressing the importance of consistency, the Railway has further instructed that daily counselling sessions for OBHS staff must be carried out to ensure that these practices are adhered to regularly. Additionally, the chiefs of all zones have been directed to ensure strict compliance with these instructions. According to available information, the OBHS scheme was initially launched by the Railway Board in 2006 as a pilot project in six Mail and Express trains. Following its success, the service was subsequently extended to additional trains. As per official data, the scheme is now operational in over 1,200 pairs of key Mail and Express trains. Under this initiative, the cleanliness of coaches, toilets, and other on-board facilities is managed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Despite these efforts, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), in its 2023 audit of OBHS conducted across 15 trains, identified several discrepancies. The report was tabled in both Houses of Parliament. Notably, the CAG stated that in 13 out of the 15 audited trains including the Bilaspur Rajdhani Express, PuneSecunderabad Shatabdi Express, KotaPatna Express, Darjeeling Mail, and Gorakhpur Weekly Express deficiencies such as choked and stinking lavatories and wash basins, soiled linen stored in doorway areas, and dirty vestibule areas were observed during the audit. The CAG also stated, The shortfall in inspections, coupled with a large number of instances of deficiencies against contractual provisions, was indicative of the need for strengthening control over the contractors. Side by side, the CAG has further suggested that the Railways must ensure full implementation of the Railway Boards directives, including surprise inspections by authorities on all operating Mail and Express trains. Meanwhile, a senior source in the Ministry of Railways told TNIE on Thursday that the Railway is taking the CAG's audit report seriously and has begun working in mission mode to implement both the CAGs recommendations and the Railways own guidelines for improving the functioning of OBHS.

Amid Nepal protests, security heightened in seven border districts in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: With Nepal being in the grip of violent protests, the Uttar Pradesh government issued directives to the state police administration to remain on high alert across all seven border districts with the Himalayan nation. The move came after the resignation of Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli following days of anti-government protests led by young demonstrators against corruption and a controversial social media ban order. After the state governments directives, UP Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna ordered round-the-clock surveillance, intensified patrolling, and deployment of additional police personnel in Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj -- the seven districts which share a 600-km long border with Nepal. Moreover, a special control room has also been set up at the Police Headquarters in Lucknow to assist Indian nationals stranded in Nepal. Three helpline numbers, including one WhatsApp number, will remain operational 247 0522-2390257, 0522-2724010, and 9454401674 (WhatsApp also on 9454401674). According to ADG (Law & Order) Amitabh Yash, the UP Police is fully committed to maintaining law and order in the state and providing all possible assistance to Indian citizens stranded in Nepal. While the India-Nepal border has not been sealed, vigil has been stepped up. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the open porous border with the neighbouring Himalayan state, has intensified patrolling to prevent infiltration of anti-social elements. Commissioner of Devipatan division, Shashi Lal Bhushan Sushil, instructed district magistrates of Balrampur, Shravasti and Bahraich to coordinate closely with police and SSB authorities. Nepal's youth vs the 'nepo kids': A generation rises against a broken system The heightened alert follows violent protests in Kathmandu, and several other cities, where protesters stormed and torched the Parliament house, the Presidents office at Shital Niwas, and residences of top leaders. At least 19 people were killed and more than 500 injured in police firing and clashes. The unrest in Nepal was fuelled by the governments decision to ban 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube, citing revenue and cybersecurity concerns. Although the ban was later revoked, the crackdown fuelled public anger, with demonstrators demanding an end to corruption and greater accountability in governance. The protests have spread to border towns like Nepalgunj bordering Bahraich district of UP. Here schools and businesses remained closed for a second straight day. Protesters indulged in violence near Sonouli town, near Maharajganj district in Uttar Pradesh in Gorakhpur division. It is located on the Indo-Nepal border and is a well-known transit point between India and Nepal in eastern UP. The protestors set government offices afire and indulged in vandalism on the other side of the border. SSB sleuths nabbed nine prisoners from Nepal who had escaped from jail taking advantage of the unrest and had entered India. The SSP rounded up four Nepali prisoners at Sonouli border in Maharajganj and five at Khunwa border in Siddharthnagar. The security agencies are grilling them. With the borders with Nepal in Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri and Maharjganj sealed, over 200 Indian truckers were stranded on the Nepal side fearing damage to their vehicles by troublemakers. There is a long 8-km queue of Indian trucks at Sonouli border. Nepals Gen Z has done their part. What's next?

Border dispute with China, Pakistans proxy war against India biggest challenges: CDS Chauhan

LUCKNOW: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan Friday said geopolitics and war could not be seen in isolation, as war is a medium to achieve political ambitions. He claimed that India's border dispute with China remained one of the biggest challenges for the country with Pakistan's proxy war against India being the next major issue. While speaking at two different events in Gorakhpur on Friday, the CDS said that while China's border dispute remained the biggest challenge, Islamabad's strategy had always been to 'bleed India by a thousand cuts.' He felt that the challenges before countries were not momentary and that they existed in different forms. I think the boundary dispute with China is India's biggest challenge and will continue to remain so. The second major challenge is Pakistans proxy war against India, with a strategy of 'bleed India by a thousand cuts', Anil Chauhan told the gathering. The CDS also said that the changed domains of war were another challenge for the nations. It now includes cyber and space. Both of our opponents are nuclear powers and it will always remain a challenge to decide what kind of operations we want to undertake against them, he added. Delving deep into Operation Sindoor , where India had targeted terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in retaliation against the April 22 Pahalgam attack, CDS Chauhan said that the armed forces had full operational freedom during the operation and the aim was to draw a red line to our patience. We had full operational freedom, including planning and selection of targets, during Operation Sindoor. The aim was not to avenge the terrorist attack, but to draw a red line of our patience, he added. He went on to say that Operation Sindoor was a multi-domain operation, which included cyber warfare and coordination among military wings. While addressing a session on 'National Security Challenges in front of India,' General Chauhan felt that war and geopolitics could not be treated in isolation, as war was a medium to fulfil the political ambitions. In Prussia, now Germany, a famous political scientist said that war is an extension of politics. War and geopolitics cannot be seen in isolation. War is a medium to achieve political ambitions, he said. He laid stress on the government and the military working in tandem for securing countrys national interest. He said that in a democracy, the military works under political leadership. In a democracy, the military works under political leadership. When a government believes that force is needed to protect national interests, a military officer like me has two duties: to provide more options to the government for using forces, and to build the governments confidence in the military so it can take bigger decisions, added the CDS. Chauhan said that after the army's clash with Chinese forces in Galwan and the Balakot airstrikes, the government allowed all three wings of the military to have emergency procurement. The CDS said that after Balakot airstrikes, which were done by India in response to the brutal Pulwama terror attack in February 2019, both India and Pakistan learned lessons, leading to enhancement of military capabilities. India focused on long-range precision strikes, and Pakistan likely focused on air defence, he said. Talking about the tactics India used over the years to target Pakistan's military infrastructure, Chauhan said that for the surgical strike after the Uri terror attack in 2016, Indian forces entered Pakistan by land and destroyed terrorist camps, and after the Pulwama attack, they opted for airstrikes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The CDS said that by the time the brutal terror attack happened in Pahalgam, this year on April 22, in which 26 people were killed the Indian forces had already enhanced our precision strike capabilities. He added, We tried to use lower airspace to maintain surprise and control escalation. But when we discussed with political leadership, we concluded that using drones and loitering munitions alone would not achieve our objectives. Chauhan added that to destroy Bahawalpur and Muridke, two of the nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir that India targeted during Operation Sindoor, airstrikes were necessary. He said that political backing and discretion were essential to carry out the operation. During Operation Sindoor, we had both, with a clear message: destroy the terrorist camps, but only retaliate if our forces were attacked. General Chauhan arrived in Gorakhpur on Thursday. He joined UP CM Yogi Adityanath for the foundation stone-laying of the Gorkha War Memorial's renovation and the Gorkha Museum. He also offered prayers at the Gorakhnath temple.

Think tank NAPi urges FM to impose highest GST slab on foods high in fat, sugar, salt

NEW DELHI: A national think tank on nutrition has urged the Finance Minister and GST Council Chairperson Nirmala Sitharaman to classify foods high in fat, sugar, or salt (HFSS) and ultra-processed foods (UPFs) as 'sin goods' or demerit goods, as they are linked to adverse health impacts. The think tank said that these products should attract the highest GST slab to discourage their consumption. In a letter addressed to Sitharaman, Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi), which consists of independent medical experts, paediatricians and nutritionists, also said that additional revenues generated from such taxation should be used to fund health promotion, nutrition education, and incentives for the production of minimally processed foods. Dr Arun Gupta, a paediatrician, nutrition advocate and NAPi Convener, told TNIE , Considering rising consumption of ultra-processed food products and resultant obesity, the GST council could consider these products to be placed in the highest brackets and make it a health tax. The revenue thus generated may be used for incentives to minimally processed and whole foods to enhance healthy eating patterns, he suggested. GST reforms likely before Diwali, rollout may start by late September The experts, who included Dr Vandana Prasad, Community Paediatrician, Public Health Resource Network (PHRN) and Jan Swasthya Abhiayan; Prof. HPS Sachdev, Senior Paediatrician and Epidemiologist and Deepika Srivastava, former senior adviser Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister, in their letter expressed deep concern regarding the rising burden of obesity, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India. They said these are directly linked to unhealthy dietary patterns driven by high consumption of HFSS and UPFs. This fact calls for reducing their consumption, the letter stressed. The letter highlighted that the Union Health Ministry issued a statement in 2021 that pointed out the growing epidemic of NCDs and its close association with unhealthy diets. It said that recently, Union Health Minister JP Nadda also underscored the vulnerability of children to unhealthy foods and the marketing practices that promote them. Quoting the Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 (Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition) ICMR-NIN report, the health experts said it provided clear evidence that over 56.4 per cent of deaths in India are related to unhealthy diets, with HFSS and UPFs identified as major contributors. They said this is consistent with the Economic Survey of India 2024-25, which identified dietary risks due to UPFs as a significant driver of health and economic burdens and called for stringent regulations. UPF's consumption is sharply rising in India, from $900 million $ in 2006 to $37 billion $ in 2019, according to Euromonitor. So is obesity and diabetes showing a rapid rise during this time period. Given that unprocessed and minimally processed foods are expensive, it drives people to buy the cheaper UPFs, the letter added. Thus, they suggested that the GST Council, in its meeting next week, could classify HFSS and UPFs as 'sin goods' or demerit goods, alongside tobacco and alcohol, given their established negative impact on human health, harmonising with and using the definitions provided in the Dietary Guidelines by ICMR-NIN. Place these products in the highest GST slab (28 per cent or above) to discourage consumption through appropriate pricing, said the letter, which was also signed by Dr Rekha Harish, former Professor and HOD of Pediatrics, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR) and Professor and HOD of Pediatrics, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Jammu; Prof KP Kushwaha, Pediatrician and Former Principal, Baba Raghav Das Medical College, Gorakhpur, UP; Dr Prasanta Tripathy, Co-founder Ekjut; Dr JP Dadhich, child health and nutrition advocate; Dr Nupur Bidla, social work professional and Reema Dutta, public health and nutrition professional. To buttress their suggestion, the experts also shared that global experience affirms the effectiveness of such fiscal measures. Citing Mexico as an example, they said that in 2014, the government taxed sugary drinks and calorie-dense snacks. This led to a measurable decline in purchases and increased substitution with healthier alternatives. Similarly, in 2016, Chile's government levied higher taxes combined with front-of-pack warning labels, which significantly reduced consumption of unhealthy drinks by 24 per cent, the letter added. A strong fiscal measure such as higher GST for HFSS and UPFs will not only reduce consumption but also help halt obesity and generate resources to strengthen public health systems. We, therefore, urge the GST Council, in its deliberations on September 3-4 , to take cognisance of this urgent need and align Indias tax policy with the nations nutrition and health priorities, the letter added.
