A thick blanket of dense fog covered large parts of north India on Friday morning, severely impacting the visibility. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of major disruptions to road, rail and air traffic. Satellite imagery showed widespread fog over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Visibility dropped to zero metres at several locations, including Agra, Bareilly, Saharanpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh; Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Adampur in Punjab; Safdarjung in Delhi; Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh; Bhagalpur in Bihar; and Daltonganj in Jharkhand. The IMD cautioned that extremely poor visibility could impact airport operations and cause delays on highways and railway routes. An orange alert was issued for multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh, parts of Uttarakhand, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, and several districts in Punjab, including Amritsar, Patiala and Sangrur. Meteorologists warned of hazardous driving conditions and an increased risk of road accidents, along with the possibility of power line tripping in affected regions. Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel, use fog lights, and stay updated on transport advisories. According to IMD definitions, very dense fog occurs when visibility ranges between 0 and 50 metres, while dense fog refers to visibility between 51 and 200 metres. As North India chokes, there can be no hiding 'behind the smokescreen of farm fires anymore' In Delhi, early morning visibility remained poor due to dense fog mixed with smog. UPEIDA issues fresh speed limits for expressways due to prevailing foggy conditions
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) issued fresh speed limit guidelines for the high-speed corridors, including the Agra-Lucknow, Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, and Gorakhpur Link Expressways. The move comes in the wake of the ongoing foggy conditions, leading to a rise in accidents on expressways owing to visibility issues. The revised speed limits will come into effect immediately and will remain in force till mid-February or until the fog conditions ease out. As per the authorities concerned, directives were present to issue overspeed challans through the Advanced Traffic Management System based on the new guidelines. For M-1 category vehicles (passenger vehicles with no more than eight seats, in addition to the drivers seat), the normal limit of 120 km/h will be lowered to 80 km/h during the day (8 am to 8 pm) and to 60 km/h at night (8 pm to 8 am). For M-2 and M-3 category vehicles (passenger vehicles with nine or more seats, including the drivers seat), the usual speed limit of 100 km/h has been reduced. During the day (8 am to 8 pm), the limit is now 60 km/h, and at night (8 pm to 8 am), it is 50 km/h. For N category vehicles and motor vehicles used to carry goods, the usual speed limit of 80 km/h has been reduced to 50 km/h during the day (8 am to 8 pm), and 40 km/h at night (8 pm to 8 am). The installation of fog lights at the entry and exit points of all expressways, along with a large board appealing to drivers to maintain controlled speeds in view of the danger posed by fog, are other measures to be put into place. As per the officials, directions have been issued to increase the number of road reflectors and blinkers along expressway curves and stretches prone to dense fog due to the proximity of rivers and streams. In heavy fog conditions (visibility less than 560 meters), the security team should stop vehicles at the nearest toll or wayside amenity, petrol pump, restaurant, gather them, and send them off in a convoy, security teams deployed at the expressways have been directed. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) would be prepared by UPIEDA, in coordination with the police, for the purpose, officials said.

UP CM orders authorities to step up road safety measures following several crashes due to dense fog
LUCKNOW: Following the Yamuna Expressway accident, which claimed 13 lives in the Mathura stretch, UP CM Yogi Adityanath reviewed expressway safety with NHAI and state highway officials on Wednesday. He ordered stricter measures to avert any such incident in future under foggy conditions. CM directed the authorities concerned to increase patrolling, field inspections, deployment of teams at all black spots, installation of reflectors, and 247 availability of cranes and ambulances on expressways. The highway authorities in the state intensified safety measures on expressways and national highways to prevent road accidents amid dense fog conditions during the winter season. As per the senior officials, a day after multiple fog-linked crashes leading to the loss of multiple lives, across the state, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the nodal authority operating key access-controlled highways including the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway and Gorakhpur Link Expressway, moved to put enhanced precautions in place. At least 25 people were killed and 59 were injured in a series of accidents attributed to poor visibility, with the worst incident reported from the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura, where a multi-vehicle pile-up claimed 13 lives. Four people each were killed in Basti and Unnao, while two fatalities were reported each from Meerut and Barabanki, said the officials on Wednesday. According to UPEIDA Nodal Officer Rajesh Pandey, fog-related accidents this season began on Tuesday. Most of the accidents, including those on the Purvanchal and Lucknow-Agra Expressways, were rear-end collisions caused by poor visibility. Pandey said UPEIDA was set to send a proposal to the state government soon to reduce the maximum speed limit on expressways from the current 120 kmph to 80 kmph during the fog period, which generally lasted until February 15. He said special advisories were being issued for two-wheeler riders, allowed on expressways. During fog, we request motorcyclists to halt at toll plazas. We are making arrangements for blankets and basic facilities for them, Pandey, a former IPS officer and SSP Lucknow, said. UPEIDA has also activated public address systems at all toll plazas to make real-time announcements about fog conditions ahead based on inputs from patrol teams, he said. Pamphlets containing safety guidelines, do's and don'ts, and emergency helpline numbers, including 14449, are also being distributed among commuters. Pandey reiterated that parking on expressways is strictly prohibited. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also launched a statewide drive to improve visibility and awareness among road users during winter fog. Officials said the speed limit on highways under NHAI is 100 kmph and stressed that besides fog, wrong-side driving and unauthorised entry and exit through highway cuts remain major causes of accidents. Authorities have urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe distances and strictly follow advisories as dense fog conditions are expected to persist across the state in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, CM Yogi ordered the authorities to ensure safe traffic management on expressways during poor visibility. Proper arrangements should be ensured in dense fog. Street and lane lighting should be checked continuously. If any light is faulty, it should be fixed immediately. Officers should inspect to ensure no person is found sleeping in the open, the CM directed the officials at the review meeting. He also asked the local administrations to make proper arrangements for the homeless during the cold wave. The homeless should be taken to rain shelters. Blankets should be continuously distributed to the needy. Bonfires should be arranged at public places. Meanwhile, an intense cold wave is sweeping the state. The conditions are such that dew drops are falling like drizzle in the foggy weather with zero visibility. On Wednesday, 50 districts including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj were in the grip of fog. Zero visibility was recorded in many places. Due to fog, more than 30 accidents have occurred in the last four days in the state. During this period, more than 150 vehicles collided.
MoS Pankaj Chaudhary likely to be new UP BJP chief; CM, nine other leaders propose his name
LUCKNOW: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to get its party chief for the Uttar Pradesh unit on Sunday. The nomination process for the election of the new state chief took place at the BJP headquarters in the state capital here on Saturday afternoon, with Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary leading the race. Chaudhary filed his papers, and his name was proposed by 10 senior BJP leaders, including UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. According to sources, Chaudhary is almost certain to get elected unopposed, as no other leader has filed nomination papers. However, a day ahead of the nomination process, BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh arrived in Lucknow and met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. An organisational meeting was also held at CMs residence on Friday night. Amid intense political activity, Union Minister Piyush Goel, appointed as the election officer by the party, arrived in Lucknow on Saturday along with central election observer Vinod Tawde, and Pankaj Chaudhary who is believed to be a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. While Pankaj Chaudhary was being considered as the front-runner for the post of UP BJP chief, the arrival of former Union Minister Sadhvi Nirajan Jyoti at the party office on Saturday morning added to the buzz of voting, as she is also being considered as a candidate. Moreover, the name of Union Minister BL Verma had also been doing the rounds for the post. The party chief was supposed to be elected in January 2025, but was delayed due to assembly elections in Maharashtra and Bihar. According to party leaders, Piyush Goyal will complete the election process on Sunday. BJP sources said that the party had zeroed in on an OBC face in Pankaj Chaudhary to lead the state. Chaudhary, a seven-time BJP MP from the Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency of eastern Uttar Pradesh, is regarded as one of the party's cadre. He started his political career in Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation. In 2024, he defeated Congress candidate Virendra Chaudhary by a margin of over 35,000 votes to enter the Union Cabinet. A prominent OBC Kurmi leader, Chaudhury filed his nomination on Saturday in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with several senior party leaders and central representatives. Hailing from Gorakhpur, Chaudhary is being seen as a choice by the party to counter the oppositions PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) narrative, while also consolidating OBC support ahead of the panchayat elections next year and the 2027 Assembly polls. Chaudhury has been a member of the Union Cabinet since 2021. If elected as the Uttar Pradesh BJP president, he would become the fourth Kurmi leader to head the party in the state, following Swatantra Dev Singh, Vinay Katiyar, and Om Prakash Singh. He is set to replace Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a Jat leader from Moradabad.

Impostor posing as IAS officer for three years arrested in Gorakhpur
LUCKNOW: A high-profile impostor, posing as an IAS officer for nearly three years, was arrested in Gorakhpur on Tuesday. Accused Gaurav Kumar Singh alias Lalit Kishor, 27, was nabbed after a probe exposed a massive fraud racket spanning several states, fake identities, luxury cars and promises of lucrative government jobs and contracts. As per police sources, Gaurav Kumar Singh was living as a 2022-batch IAS officer, meticulously maintaining a lifestyle equipped with a white Innova with red-blue beacon lights, a 15-member entourage trained to create an atmosphere of officialdom best suited to the profession. Moreover, he used to spend Rs 5 lakh per month just to sustain the pretence. Gaurav Kumar is accused of allegedly cheating dozens across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh promising government jobs, tenders, and official contracts in lieu of hefty amounts running into crores. Police, on Wednesday, also arrested his two aides Parmanand Gupta and Abhishek Kumar, both natives of Bihar. Gorakhpur SP, Abhinav Tyagi who led the probe, said that investigations gained momentum after a merchant Mukund Madhav from Mokama in Bihar was detained at Gorakhpur Railway Station with Rs 99.09 lakh in cash when the neighbouring state was having assembly polls. Police believed that it was the amount meant to bribe Gaurav Kumar in exchange of a government appointment. Though the deal later fell apart and the money was returned to Mukund Madhav, the seizure triggered deeper inquiry ultimately exposing Gauravs network. Following the discovery, Gaurav attempted to evade arrest: he fled Gorakhpur to a rented home in Lucknows Aashiana area to avoid a police raid. But a tip-off later led officers back to Gorakhpur, where they arrested him when he returned to meet an associate. According to police sources, Gaurav Kumar hails from Mehasoul village in Sitamarhi district of Bihar. He completed post-graduation in Mathematics in 2019 with aspirations to become a DIOS in the education department. He spent nearly three years preparing for civil-service exams. In 2022 he opened a coaching centre, Aditya-50, to train students for competitive exams. But that same year, he allegedly defrauded a student, collecting Rs 2 lakh for a promised job that never materialised prompting an FIR, said Tyagi. As his civil-service hopes dashed after failure to crack the competition, Gaurav went underground for a year and resurfaced claiming to have cleared the 2022 IAS batch, assuming the identity of an IAS officer. He quickly built a parallel life: with help from his brother-in-law Abhishek Kumar trained in software he created forged identity documents and later leveraged AI tools to generate convincing official papers, tender documents, inspection reports, and even fabricated media clippings showing him seated in a DMs chair, said the police sources. Investigators say the fraudulent network expanded rapidly across four states. Gaurav reportedly took money from over 40 people, promising government contracts or jobs. During investigation, police seized two mobile phones belonging to Gaurav. Chats revealed he maintained romantic relationships with four women, three of whom under the impression he was an IAS officer claimed to be pregnant. He was also married to a woman from Bihar. None of these women were aware of his real identity. Gauravs racket started unravelling when a contractor, defrauded of millions, filed complaints in Bihar. Similar grievances surfaced in Gorakhpur. Intelligence agencies and local police began monitoring Gauravs movements for months. Eventually, surveillance and tip-offs converged to place him back in Gorakhpur where he was finally arrested. Authorities recovered several forged documents, luxury cars, and bank records. During interrogation, Gaurav reportedly claimed that once the backlash from cheated contractors grew strong, he fled to Lucknow, but later returned thinking the heat had subsided.

IM operative Shadab Beg back under scanner after new links to Faridabad University emerge
LUCKNOW: Indian Mujahideen operative Mirza Shadab Beg of Azamgarh, wanted in connection with several serial blasts across the country, is once again under the scrutiny of probe agencies following new intelligence inputs linking him to Al Falah University in Faridabad. According to UP ATS sources, Beg completed his BTech in Electronics and Instrumentation from Al Falah University around 2007. Investigators suspect he came in contact with extremist networks during his student years and later used his technical training to support bomb-making activities and arrange logistics for the Indian Mujahideen. Records show that Beg was a key accused in the 2007 Gorakhpur blast and the serial bombings in Jaipur and Ahmedabad in 2008. Officials say he was part of core IM modules responsible for reconnaissance, procurement of explosives and the supply of critical components such as detonators and metal bearings used in the attacks. Property linked to Beg has been seized in Uttar Pradesh after his name surfaced in connection with Al Falah University. He has remained on central agencies most-wanted lists for years. Back home, his family claims that Beg, who left 18 years ago, never returned, and they only received occasional information about his movements after he went missing. Intelligence inputs suggest he went underground soon after the 2008 blasts to evade crackdowns on IM operatives. Agencies now believe he has been absconding for nearly two decades, making him one of the longest-surviving fugitives associated with the outfit. Sources also claim that Beg visited Afghanistan in 2019. Investigators are probing the support channels that helped him leave India and exploring his suspected links with regional extremist groups. The recent Delhi terror blast has intensified scrutiny of Al Falah University, with security agencies reviewing old student records and networks to determine whether Beg attempted to recruit others on campus. Sources said efforts are under way to trace Beg and dismantle any remaining networks linked to him.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath highlights sharp drop in crime, inaugurates modern forensic lab
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reflected on the states law-and-order situation on Tuesday, emphasising that crime in the state had sharply decreased. Criminals are now caught quickly and punished, said CM Yogi, adding that if a robbery or snatching occurred, the offender could be seen limping the next day. The Chief Minister made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Gorakhpur during the inauguration of a modern forensic laboratory. He also reviewed law-and-order work and held a Janata Darbar to hear public grievances. CM Yogi asserted that crime no longer occurred freely in Uttar Pradesh. This is a new Uttar Pradesh that does not tolerate crime and ensures punishment, he said. The modern forensic laboratory, inaugurated by the Chief Minister, was built at a cost of Rs 72.78 crore. Yogi said the FSL lab was part of the governments zero-tolerance policy towards crime. To support his point, he cited improved womens participation in the workforce due to enhanced security. Prior to 2017, only 13 per cent of women in the state were working. The figure has now risen to 35 per cent, as women feel safer going out for work, he claimed. The Chief Minister also highlighted that 2,19,000 police personnel had been recruited over the past eight years. Many states do not have such a large police force. Recently, 60,244 new police recruits joined the service. In 2017, the government had to rely on military and paramilitary training centres due to limited capacity, but the state now has sufficient training facilities of its own, he added. CM Yogi further noted that following a 2016 Supreme Court directive for Safe Cities, Uttar Pradesh now has 17 municipal corporations, with Noida and Greater Noida linked to an Integrated Command and Control Centre. Over 13 lakh CCTV cameras have been installed across these areas to provide round-the-clock surveillance.
Diabetes surges among young Indians; need for early screening: Experts
NEW DELHI: Indias battle against diabetes is entering a new phase as diagnostic data warn of a marked rise in the disease among younger adults, experts said on Thursday on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. Type 2 diabetes, which was reported among older adults, is now increasingly being detected in people in their twenties and early thirties, a shift experts describe as both alarming and preventable. Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Chair and Head, Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare and former Honorary President of AIIMS Gorakhpur, said, India finds itself at a critical juncture in its diabetes response, where the sheer scale of young-adult onset is now meeting the tools to intervene early. It is crucial that everyone, especially those aged 25 and above, undergo at least an annual screening to catch early metabolic changes and act before complications develop, he said. Alongside regular testing, adopting a balanced diet rich in fibre, whole grains, and traditional foods such as millets can significantly improve insulin sensitivity and help maintain long-term metabolic health. For individuals struggling with obesity, lifestyle interventions remain the cornerstone, and in select cases, medically supervised weight-management therapies may complement these efforts to reduce diabetes risk, he added. The challenge now is to transition from identifying disease to intercepting it, to make metabolic screening, risk-profiling, and follow-up a routine part of health checks for young adults, not just middle-aged adults. If this generational shift takes root, the pipeline of complications, organ damage, and lifelong medication dependence can be dramatically altered, said the Padma Bhushan awardee. According to the 2023 Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study India has an estimated 101 million people with diabetes, 136 million pre diabetics and 315 million people with hypertension in 2021. The study, which ICMR coordinated with Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), found the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes of 11.4% and 15.3%, respectively, in India. According to the latest findings from Mahajan Imaging and Labs, one of Delhi NCRs leading integrated diagnostic chains, there has been a significant surge in metabolic and glucose screenings among adults under 40 in 2025. Of those tested, nearly 38% of fasting glucose results, 20% of HbA1c readings, and 35% of post-prandial glucose outcomes were abnormal, with a notable proportion of critical cases identified early. The high percentage of abnormal findings among young adults underscores both a growing metabolic risk and the impact of expanded preventive screening. This trend reinforces urgent calls for early intervention and proactive care, said experts. Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Founder and Chairman, Mahajan Imaging and Labs said, We are witnessing a clear metabolic shift in Indias younger population. People in their twenties and thirties, who appear to be fit, appear to show early signs of insulin resistance. More of them are getting tested early, an encouraging sign that prevention is finally being taken seriously. Diabetes is not just a blood glucose value; it reflects a broader metabolic imbalance. Left unchecked, it can lead to complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, amputations, and fatty liver. Blood glucose, like blood pressure, can serve as an early warning sign, he added. Modern diagnostic tools, including fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, fructosamine, C-peptide, adiponectin and leptin, MODY genetic tests, autoantibody screening, and continuous glucose monitoring with HbA1c, allow early detection of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. Integrating these tests with routine screening enables timely intervention, helping young adults prevent long-term complications, said the Padma Shri. The real progress in diabetes prevention will come from integrating routine lab diagnostics with emerging molecular tools. Traditional metrics like HbA1c or fasting glucose are essential, but when combined with markers that map inflammation and metabolic stress, we start identifying risk years before diabetes sets in. This convergence of preventive pathology, genomics, and data analytics is transforming how we understand and predict metabolic disease in Indias young population, said Dr Shelly Mahajan, Lab Director and Clinical Lead, Mahajan Imaging and Labs. Experts say the rise in screening volumes across diagnostic centres aligns with Indias growing focus on preventive and genomic testing, both in private healthcare and through national programmes. The government initiative, which integrates community-level screening for diabetes and hypertension, has been expanding across districts to improve early detection and disease tracking. While traditional tests like fasting glucose and HbA1c remain central to diabetes monitoring, experts caution against an over-reliance on single markers. The emerging consensus is on a more holistic, data-driven approach that includes body composition tracking, genomic risk mapping, and metabolic profiling, not as a luxury, but as a frontline preventive strategy. Experts said the countrys response must now focus on early risk identification, continuous monitoring, and lifestyle modification, especially among the working-age population. The consensus is clear that Indias youth are both the most vulnerable and the most capable of reversing the countrys diabetes trajectory through awareness, timely screening, and proactive care, they said.
Vande Mataram rendition to be mandatory in all UP schools: Yogi
LUCKNOW: Singing Vande Mataram will be made compulsory in educational institutions across Uttar Pradesh, CM Yogi Adityanath said on Monday. Addressing an Ekta Yatra (Unity March) event in Gorakhpur to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the national song, he said this step would inspire feelings of reverence and pride among citizens towards the motherland. There should be a sense of respect for Vande Mataram, he stressed, noting that anybody opposing the national song is insulting the countrys unity and integrity. Every citizen of India must stand united for this cause, the Chief Minister emphasised, adding, There is no point in opposing the Vande Mataram. No religion or caste can be greater than the country. We must set aside beliefs that hinder national unity. Notably, the move comes days after a political row erupted over the national song when Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that dropping key stanzas of the song in 1937 had sown the seeds of Partition and that such a divisive mindset remained a challenge for the country. The remarks were widely interpreted as an attack on the Congress. The BJP also accused the Congress of pandering to a communal agenda under Jawaharlal Nehrus leadership by adopting a truncated version of the song that year. The Congress hit back sharply, alleging that Modi had insulted the 1937 Congress Working Committee and Rabindranath Tagore, who had suggested adopting only the first two stanzas. Road quality non-negotiable, officers and contractors to be held accountable: Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari discussed Indias recent infrastructure developments with TNIE , citing a 60% expansion of the national highway network to over 1.46 lakh km. He outlined ongoing projects worth Rs 12.20 lakh crore, major highway corridors, city ring roads, reforms in land acquisition and environmental clearances, measures to ensure road maintenance accountability, the rollout of GPS-based toll collection, and Bihars progress relative to other states. Excerpts Q) The country has seen a massive expansion of its national highway network in recent years. What is the current status of this growth? Indias national highway network has surged from 91,287 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km today, a 60% increase. Currently, 48,536 km of projects worth Rs 12.20 lakh crore are underway, with completed schemes totaling Rs 16 lakh crore and upcoming projects at Rs 15 lakh crore. Sixteen major highway corridors, including the Arunachal Frontier Highway (Rs 30,000 crore) and ShillongSilchar Greenfield Highway (Rs 23,000 crore), have been sanctioned to boost regional connectivity. Ring roads in cities like Ayodhya, Kanpur, and Guwahati aim to ease congestion. In 11 years, 1.06 lakh km of highways have been constructed, with the ministrys budget rising ninefold to Rs 2.87 lakh crore. Q) Some projects still face delays in projects caused by land acquisition and environmental clearance issues? Land acquisition falls under state governments, while environmental clearances involve multiple departments, making coordination key. Reducing delays is a test of effective leadership. We prioritise sustainable planning, ensuring timely land acquisition and fast-track approvals for forest, wildlife, and environmental clearances. At least 90% of land and clearance requirements must now be completed before project awards.Regular meetings with state officials and the PM Gati Shakti initiative have streamlined inter-ministerial coordination. Digital portals, Bhoomi Amount Digital Portal for land and Parivesh for environmental approvals simplify processes, accelerating project delivery and enhancing efficiency nationwide. Q) India has seen record construction of highways in recent years but their maintenance still seems to be a challenge. For each fault, we (the Central Government) are held responsible. About 80 percent of complaints on social media are not under our jurisdiction or do not pertain to national highways (NHs). Our roads are of good quality; however, there have been some problems. We are continuously improving the technology and will definitely address these issues. Regarding accountability, we are serious about ensuring that officers and contractors are responsible if roads are not maintained properly. There should be no compromise with quality, and we are committed to fixing lapses wherever they occur to maintain high standards. Q) How long will it take to implement the GPS based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system? It has already started at some locations and will be introduced at 4 to 6 places from November 15. We will move further gradually, expanding the initiative step by step while monitoring progress and ensuring smooth implementation at each stage. Q) With Bihar heading into elections, how does the state compare to others in development across key sectors like water, power, transport, and roads? Bihar needs accelerated development compared to other states. Water, power, transport and roads are the basic requirements for progress. The developmental work undertaken by our government, in the last 10-11 years, has transformed the face of Bihar. Business and industries are growing steadily in Bihar. The young people of Bihar see their future in development and employment. They do not bother about Jaat (Caste), Pant (Community), Dharma (Religion) and Bhasha (Language). They aspire to excel in education, seek better job opportunities, and want to actively contribute to the nations growth. I think that the state has sufficient electricity supply. Irrigation has significantly improved. The road infrastructure has also got better. Earlier, the Ganga had just two bridges, now we have 13. In the highway sector; projects worth Rs five lakh crores are going on. Projects having a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh crores either have been completed or on the verge of completion. Some will start soon. We are building big highways; Varanasi-Kolkata highways cost of Rs 40,000 crores and Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway is worth Rs 50,000 crores. All these highways will change the landscape of Bihar. With a strong and vast network of highways and robust power sector, the industry will reach the state naturally and will ensure Bihar's comprehensive development. Q) Staying on with politics, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi recently held a press conference in which he alleged Vote Chori In Haryana elections. He along with other opposition parties has been questioning Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which started in Bihar. How do you see this issue? Rahul Gandhi speaks for himself. Even his party people don't take him seriously. There is no need to respond to his baseless comments.

Police dogs Jack and Rambo help Haryana cops bust illegal arms cache
CHANDIGARH: Usually, tales of police bravery focus on human heroes. But in a recent major breakthrough under Operation Jeevan Jyoti, Haryana Police credited two four-legged warriorsJack and Rambofor their extraordinary scent-detection abilities. The canines, working seamlessly with the police, detected a hidden secret chamber in a house in Gorakhpur village, Fatehabad. Inside the concealed space, the police recovered a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition: four illicit firearms, 14 live cartridges, and 20 liters of lahan (raw liquor used for making illegal alcohol). Haryana Director General of Police OP Singh praised the operation, saying that canines like Jack and Rambo are not just members of the police force but real heroes. These dogs serve as our eyes and nose in the field and have proven highly effective in dismantling criminal networks, he said. He added that Haryana Police is working under a strict zero-tolerance policy against criminals, and such operations will continue in the future. On Monday morning, the police team led by Bhuna Police Station in-charge Sub-Inspector Om Prakash reached Gorakhpur for a raid based on a secret tip-off, with Jack and Rambo accompanying them. Upon reaching the spot, Jacks alert behavior and sharp sense of smell signaled suspicion, focusing on a specific part of the house. Rambo followed the same lead, reinforcing the suspicion and guiding the police team further. The alertness of both canines prompted the SWAT commando unit to act swiftly, leading to the discovery of the hidden chamber. Inside, authorities found a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition, including a double-barreled gun, three country-made pistols, 14 live cartridges, and 20 liters of lahan. This success under Operation Jeevan Jyoti has dealt a severe blow to the criminal network while boosting public confidence in the police. The case demonstrates that when technology, human skill, and animal instincts converge, victory in the fight against crime and illicit substances is assured. Police stated that the accused, identified as Kuldeep, a resident of Gorakhpur, managed to flee upon seeing the raiding team. All seized weapons have been sent for forensic examination. Authorities are investigating whether the cache is linked to any criminal gang or inter-state arms-smuggling network.
SIR campaign commences in Uttar Pradesh, State's final voter list to be out on February 7 2026
LUCKNOW: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign to revamp the voter list in Uttar Pradesh commenced with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting door-to-door on Tuesday. The voter list updated through SIR will serve as a crucial foundation for the 2027 Assembly elections. Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) have deployed strong teams at each booth for the campaign. Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has assigned responsibilities to booth presidents, sector presidents, and Booth Level Agents (BLAs), who have undergone training. Congress and other parties are working to strengthen booths according to their capacities. Uttar Pradesh has over 15.44 crore voters with over 1.62 lakh booths across the state. As per the Chief Electoral Office sources, BLOs of more than 1.62 lakh booths commenced the door-to-door campaign from Tuesday. The final voter list of SIR would be published on February 7, 2026. Before it, based on BLO reports, Electoral Registration Officers (EROS) of each assembly constituency will release draft voter lists on December 9, 2025. The sources added that voters and political parties would submit claims and objections from December 9 to January 8, 2026, and the EROs would resolve them from December 9 to January 31, 2026. West Bengal SIR: What voters need to know before BLOs visit their homes Under the Election Commission's new system, a maximum of 1200 voters will now be at one booth, making it easier to contact them and conduct voting on election day. Officials at the CEO's office said that this would increase the number of polling booths in the state from 1.62 lakh to over 1.82 lakh. In the wake of the commencement of the campaign, the BJP, sticking to its strategy of winning the booth means winning the election. With this mantra, the party has made plans to prepare voter lists based on this same mantra. The ruling party has already appointed coordinators for SIR in Awadh, Kashi, West, Braj, Gorakhpur and Kanpur regions, along with setting up war rooms. All regional coordinators have been instructed to sit in the war room daily. They have to talk to district and assembly coordinators connected to their region daily and take reports. BJP's war room will also be set up in each district along with the region. A team of at least 10 workers will be deployed in it. The team will be present in the war room from morning to evening. The BJP has also assigned responsibility to MPs and MLAs in SIR. All MPs of the state and 2024 candidates, MLAs and defeated candidates of 2022 have been given the responsibility of getting voter lists printed. They have to set up a war room in the assembly constituency and review SIR work at their booths every five days. They need to stay in contact with Mandal and Booth daily. Weekly review would be done by the team of MLAs and defeated candidates. Similarly, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has deputed teams of six persons at each booth regarding SIR. Booth President, Booth General Secretary, and three Booth Secretaries will assist the Booth Level Agent (BLA). They will also help the BLA in gathering information about each voter by going door-to-door. The BSP has assigned responsibility to sector presidents for monitoring booth-level teams. Each sector has 10 to 12 booths. In each sector, a team of 11 people, including the president, is working. They have also been given booth-wise monitoring responsibility. DMK asks Supreme Court to stop SIR in Tamil Nadu Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has also geared up for SIR. As per the party's national spokesperson and former MLC Udayvir Singh, SP is deploying agents at the booth level who will coordinate between the Election Commission and the general voters. Booth-level agents have been asked to ensure that no voter's name is left out of being included in the voter list. Booth-level agents are being deployed as PDA guards. Moreover, party MPs and MLAs have also been given responsibilities in their respective areas of monitoring the campaign. A helpline centre is also being set up at the Samajwadi Party headquarters, where help will be provided by the party if anyone faces any difficulty. As per the party sources, special instructions have been given to help those who do not have houses or land. Similarly, Congress is lagging behind a bit as far as the preparations for SIR are concerned. The party is engaged in the process of deploying BLA-1 at all 1.62 lakh booths in the state. November 6 has been set as the deadline for this process. From November 7, they will start their work at the booth level. Congress has created a connecting centre for monitoring the entire process.

Indian Railways starts playing Chhath songs at over 100 stations across nation
NEW DELHI: Ahead of Bihars Chhath festival, Indian Railways has introduced a unique arrangement of playing popular folk songs dedicated to the Chhath festival at over 100 prominent stations across the country. In the first phase, this initiative has been implemented at 30 different stations, where announcements of train departures or arrivals pause for a while. During these intervals, folk songs sung by well-known singers such as Sharda Sinha, Nitu Kumari Navgeet, Vindyavasni Devi and others are played when no train information is being broadcast over the automated announcement system. The Railways has started playing Chhatha songs at more than 30 stations in Bihar, including Patna, Danapur, Hajipur, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Sonepur and others. Similar arrangements for playing Chhatha songs have also been made at New Delhi, Ghaziabad and Anand Vihar Terminal, which are now witnessing heavy footfall of passengers travelling to Bihar and other Hindi-speaking states for the festival. Confirming this to the newspaper, ED (I&P) Dileep Kumar of the Ministry of Railways said on Friday, Indian Railways has started broadcasting Chhatha songs at railway stations on the auspicious occasion of Chhatha Puja. The aim of this initiative is to connect the passengers with the auspicious spirit of the festival and make their journey more pleasant. This has been launched at almost all those stations that now witness large numbers of Bihar-bound passengers travelling for the Chhatha festival across the country. Savita Kumari, a passenger travelling from Kolkata to Patna with her family members for the Chhatha festival, said These devotional songs being played at railway stations during Chhatha Puja surcharge the ambience of station with religious festivity for the devotees, who either remain in wait to take trains or boarding in trains. A senior railway official told the newspaper that the Chhatha folk songs being played make passengers feel the fragrance of their home and culture, thereby infusing devotion and joy into their journey even when they remain away from their states. Begun on Friday, the initiative through the automatic announcement system will continue for several days after the end of Chhatha, covering the period when passengers make their return journeys. Others stations such as Banaras, Gorakhpur and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, Burdwan, Durgapur and Asansol in West Bengal, as well as Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab, are among the hundreds of stations where this initiative has been introduced. Currently, Indian Railways is operating more than 12,000 special train trips to manage the surge of passengers travelling from across the country to states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where the Chhatha festival is celebrated on a large scale.
To ease festive travel for Chhath Puja, 22 special trains and 210 extra buses are running from Gorakhpur and nearby stations. North Eastern Railway announced additional services, including an unreserved Howrah-Gorakhpur special, with several trains still offering confirmed berth availability.

'Political Islam' undermined Hindu faith, largely overlooked in history: CM Yogi
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that while history often highlights British and French colonialism, the role of political Islam, which he claimed dealt the greatest blow to Sanatan Dharma, is largely overlooked. He highlighted that great warriors like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Guru Gobind Singh, Maharana Pratap, and Maharana Sanga waged battles against political Islam. Our ancestors waged major struggles against political Islam, yet this aspect of history remains largely overlooked, Adityanath said at the 'Vichar-Parivar Kutumb Sneh Milan' and 'Deepotsav Se Rashtrotsav' programmes organised by the Gorakhpur division to mark the centenary year of the RSS. The chief minister lauded the RSS for its pivotal role in the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He claimed that while the nation discusses colonial resistance, it often overlooks the ideological challenge of political Islam. Our ancestors fought not only against the British and French but also against political Islam; heroes like Veer Shivaji and Maharana Pratap stand testimony to this. There is talk of British colonialism, there is talk of French colonialism, but nowhere is there talk of political Islam, which undermined the faith, Adityanath said. He said that during the RSS's 100-year journey, the impossible has been made possible. While members of the Samajwadi Party, the Congress, and the INDIA bloc questioned the Ram temple, RSS volunteers remained steadfast in their resolve that the temple would be built.
