NEW DELHI: The government confirmed the acquisition of low-level transportable radars on Wednesday, which will strengthen the Indian Air Force's capabilities to track aerial targets. The Ministry of Defence said that it has inked a capital acquisition contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad, for the procurement of Low-level Transportable Radar (LLTR) Ashwini at a cost of Rs 2,906 crore. Southern Railway plans Amrit Bharat Express from TN to Kashmir
CHENNAI: Rail passengers, tourists and pilgrims from Tamil Nadu will soon be able to make an affordable and seamless train journey to the picturesque valleys of Kashmir. The Southern Railway is planning to introduce the Amrit Bharat Express that will connect either Kanniyakumari, the southernmost town of India, or Rameswaram, the tip of the Indian peninsula, to Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The new train service would run for a length of over 4,000 kilometres. The Amrit Bharat rake has a high-speed push-pull configuration, equipped with engines at both ends, capable of reaching speeds of up to 130 kmph. It has been designed to offer Vande Bharat-like comfort for non-AC passengers. This initiative comes as the 111-km Katra-Banihal section, the last leg of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, is set to be inaugurated next month. At present, the only way for visitors from the state to reach Kashmir is either by road or by air. Describing the proposal as an ambitious project of the Southern Railway, official sources revealed to TNIE, At the policy level, the decision has been taken to provide a train link to Srinagar/Baramulla either from Kanniyakumari or Rameswaram. A Vande Bharat trial run from New Delhi to Srinagar was conducted recently and the line is likely to be thrown open for operation soon. The decision on introducing the AB Express from Kanniyakumari/Rameswaram to Srinagar will be finalised once the line is inaugurated. Green light for locos to run at 130 km/hr The AB express will operate on heavily congested routes, improving interstate connectivity, particularly for migrant workers. The Southern Railway has been allocated two rakes of the Amrit Bharat train, with the first one likely to be introduced on the Shalimar route, while the second rakes route is yet to be finalised. In this backdrop, the Railway Board last month directed the transfer of four WAP-5 locomotives from Ghaziabads loco shed (Northern Railway) to the Royapuram electric loco shed. These locomotives, capable of operating at speeds of up to 160 kmph, have been cleared to run at 130 kmph, ensuring efficient and timely service. Currently, the Himsagar Express operates from Kanniyakumari to Katra, covering a distance of 3,785 kilometres and serving pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi Temple. The new 327-kilometre single railway line from Jammu Tawi to Baramulla, passing through Udhampur, Katra, Banihal, Qazigund and Srinagar, will provide direct rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley from the rest of the country. Introduced in 2024, the Amrit Bharat Express consists of 22 coaches, including 12 sleeper coaches, eight general coaches and two luggage coaches. The prototype of the AB rake, which underwent 12 major upgrades, was unveiled by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January this year at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. Key enhancements include semi-automatic couplers, modular toilets, ergonomic seats and berths, emergency talk-back systems and a continuous lighting system similar to that of Vande Bharat trains. Additionally, the train features advanced pantry car designs, technology-based water level indicators and external emergency lights to ensure passenger safety and comfort during emergencies such as derailments or accidents.

NIA to attach properties of accused in Iran organ trafficking case
KOCHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to initiate proceedings to attach the properties of four individuals accused in the 2024 organ trafficking case, in which vulnerable youths were lured to Iran under false promises and forced to donate their organs. The investigation has revealed bank transactions worth over Rs 6 crore between the first accused, Madhu Jayakumar of Kochi, and the second accused, Sabith Nasar of Thrissur. Officials are now working to trace all assets linked to the accused, as they are believed to have been acquired through criminal activity. It was on 18 May 2024 that Sabith was intercepted by immigration officials at Kochi airport on suspicion of being part of an organised organ trafficking network. Following this, the police arrested Sajith Shyam, a native of Kalamassery, Kerala, and Bellamkonda Ram Prasad, a native of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The prime accused, Madhu Jayakumar, from Ernakulam, remains absconding, and Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against him. After taking over the case, the NIA filed a charge sheet against all four accused. The agency found that the accused were running an international racket, deceiving people into travelling to Iran to donate their organs. Many donors were taken to Iran but were never given the promised remuneration. As the case involves a serious offence, the NIA is moving to attach the accuseds properties. NIA is looking to attach properties of the accused persons under Section 108 of BNSS. The probe revealed that the properties of the accused were obtained through criminal acts. Steps have been initiated to identify all the assets of the accused persons, sources said. As part of its investigation, the NIA examined the bank accounts of the accused, which exposed details of significant financial transactions between Madhu and Sabith related to the organ trafficking operation. According to sources, Sabith's account at South Indian Banks Thrissur branch was heavily used for financial dealings linked to the racket. The bank account details revealed transactions to the tune of 6 crore. The amount is likely higher, as the estimated money received by Madhu is much more. Attempts are being made to trace all movable and immovable properties of the accused persons, sources said. The investigation has established that organ donors were primarily from Telangana, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, organ recipients were sourced from New Delhi, Jammu, and Ghaziabad, with the network charging up to 50 lakh per transplant. They lured donors by promising high remuneration. After reaching Iran via Colombo, the victims' passports were confiscated. The racket members detained them in hotels in Iran and pressured them to donate their kidneys. Later, a meagre amount was paid to the donors before sending them back to India, sources said. Among the accused, Sajith Shyam and Sabith Nasar were granted bail by the court. Bellamkonda Ram Prasad is still awaiting bail. Meanwhile, authorities continue their search for Madhu, whose arrest is considered crucial to the case, as he allegedly oversaw the rackets operations in Iran.

Indias 'poor' air quality is alarming, New Delhi ranks as the most polluted city of the world
The AQI 2024 Worlds most polluted countries list is here, and the data reveals that the list of top 10 has nine spots occupied by South Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Along with this, the list of most polluted cities also include names of Asian and African countries. Among the countries the first two spots are occupied by Bangladesh and Pakistan with AQI levels of 140 and 115 respectively. And India is giving them company at No.3 with average AQI levels of 111 falling in the poor category. Notably, an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 0-50 is good, AQI between 51-100 is moderate and between 100-150 is poor, according to the data by AQI.in website. Moreover, AQI between 150-200 is unhealthy, 200-250 as severe and when it is between 250 to 300 then it is hazardous. The top 4 th spot is occupied by Bahrain, with Nepal making it to 5 th . Bahrain recorded an AQI of 103 and Nepal at 100 in the year 2024. The only non-Asian country in the list of top 10 is Egypt, at the 6 th spot with an AQI of 91. United Arab Emirates (UAE) stood at no.7 (AQI 90), followed by Kuwait and Tajikistan at no.8 (with an AQI of 89 each) and Kyrgyzstan at 10 with its annual average AQI at 87. Worlds most polluted cities of 2024 This is not shocking as Indias capital city New Delhi is ranking at the top in the worlds most polluted cities of 2024. And it is not poor, it has unhealthy levels of AQI reported at 169, now being declared as the Global Capital of toxic air or Pollution. And it is not New Delhi alone, many other cities are a part of the list, the second in the ranks is Greater Noida with an average AQI of 166, Noida at 3 rd with its AQI 161, Ghaziabad at no.4 with AQI 159, and Faridabad at 5 th with AQI 154. The last five spots of Top 10 are also occupied with Indian cities only. These include Gurgaon at no.6 with AQI 154, Bhiwadi at no.7 with AQI 153, followed by Patna at no.8 with AQI 145 marked in poor category, Sonipat at no.9 with AQI 145 and Muzaffarnagar at no.10 with AQI 144. The top 50 list is dominated with Indian cities from North India. As per a report by Reuters, the states of North India like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have severe pollution levels, especially during the winter season when temperatures fall, cold air traps down emissions, construction dust and the farm fires are set off by the farmers. As per a report in aqi(dot)in, the air was so toxic that the PM2.5 levels were equal to residents breathing in over 1,400 cigarettes over an year. Dhaka is the only non- Indian city in the list upto Top 17, ranking at 13 th spot with an AQI of 140. Other cities in the Top 50 apart from the ones of India are Peshawar (Pakistan), Tachov (Czech Republic), Kashgar (China), and Lahore (Pakistan). This reflects upon how Indias struggle with air pollution is worsening with time, being at the 3 rd spot country wise and getting most of its cities listed, we are collapsing gradually. Out of the 145 cities of the world with worst air quality, 125 are from India, a figure shocking as well as worrying. The declining air quality is alarming for the country now. Growth and development arent supposed to come this way, ultimately it is the air that you breathe which will slowly kill you. It is concerning and demands attention of the authorities, the governments, the organizations as well as the people at large. The figures are prompting enough for a serious action, at the same time throwing light upon the fact that till now, there are no real signs of any improvement. It is a crisis now, posing serious threat to public health and might worsen if delayed. The tiny particles easily make their way to the lungs and bloodstream causing problems with breathing and heart disease as well. At present, we are rated poor, soon it will be unhealthy and then unbearable. Therefore, until we are not able to breathe anymore, its time for actionsustained efforts from all can only do the needful!
Railway asks RITES to design proposed permanent holding areas at railway stations
NEW DELHI: Following the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station which killed at least 18 people including four children, the Ministry of Railways has instructed Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) to design 'permanent holding areas' (PHAs) at 60 stations across the country for crowd management. These stations have been selected based on the sudden increased crowd surges during special occasions like Holi, Diwali, Chhatha and other festivals. So far, permanent holding areas (PHAs) have been developed at only 9 stations in and around Prayagraj in UP. These holding areas are located outside the platforms to help control the flow of passengers and prevent overcrowding. In view of emerging crowds of passengers for Mahakumbh ahead of Mahashivratri, falling this year on February 26, passengers holding areas on temporary basis have also been created at Patna junction, Danapur, Ara, Buxar, Sasaram Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Hajipur, Samastipur and other railway stations following the massive origination of passengers towards Mahakumbh, a senior official working with the Ministry of Railway told this newspaper. The temporary passenger holding areas have also been created at Deendayal Upadhyay Railway station, formerly known as Mughalsarai, under the east Central Railway. Upon being asked about the progress on the plan for the construction of the proposed holding areas, the railway official said, The RITES has been instructed to start working on the design of permanent holding areas keeping every factors in mind. After the design is readied by the RITES, the Ministry of Railway after wider discussion approves it and move ahead in mission mode for 60 railway stations. Many stations in Bihar, UP and other states witness sudden surges in crowds of passengers during festivals like Saharsa. Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Udna, New Delhi and other stations also witness sharp surges in number of passengers during festivals. After final design of PHAs is readied and approved, all amenities like ticketing zones, wi-fi, eateries stalls, and others would be made available in each of PHAs. Not only this, by doing some changes in the Amrit stations, the permanent holding area would also be created to control crowds during peak time, said an official. As it is roughly being estimated, the Ministry will have to spend between Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore for the development of these permanent holding areas as part of a larger effort to improve crowd management at major stations. Railway Ministry orders platform X to remove videos of New Delhi railway station stampede For the time being, in view to keep emerging crowds for Mahakumbh, massive holding areas at Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar, New Delhi, Ayodhya Dham, Vanaras ,Ballia, Siwan, Deoria, Chhapra, Rajendranagar in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Barauni, Jaynagar, Madhubani, Raxaul, and Gaya have been created by the railway. Passengers are allowed to enter the platforms based on the scheduled departure times of their trains. This initiative aims to improve crowd management and enhance passenger safety, especially during peak hours and festive seasons, the official said. Meanwhile, UP CM Yogi Aditaynath appreciated the railway for arrangements to the Mahakumbh-bound passengers. He said that more than 13,500 trains including more than 3500 special trains are in service for the Mahakumbh. The 48 digital ticketing, multilingual announcements and conveniences being provided to passengers reflect the railway's commitment, he said.

Principal GMC Rajouri Dr Amarjeet Singh Bhatia told this newspaper that all the 11 patients admitted in the patients are stable now. Of the 11 patients, we have stopped the atropine dosage of 9 while we have reduced the atropine dosage of two others. Eight patients have fully recovered, he said. He, however, said the doctors in the hospital have decided against discharging the patients till a report from central agencies is received on what kind of toxin was there that caused the deaths. We have used atropine solution for the illness due to the hit and trial method but we dont know what kind of toxin caused the illness. When you dont know the exact diagnosis what treatment will doctors give to patients at the time of discharge. Many teams of national health agencies have visited the village and collected samples for detailed analysis and investigation. Delhi polls: Amit Shah, Yogi lead BJP ralliesinDelhi
New Delhi: The BJP launched an unprecedented and extensive campaign across election-bound Delhi on Tuesday, holding 43 rallies. Leading the charge were Union home minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to follow up with a public meeting on Wednesday. Mr Modi is slated to address a public meeting at Yamun Khadar themed as Viksit Dilli Sankalp rally on Wednesday. In all, Mr Modi will hold three rallies in the city ahead of the February 5 polls. Mr Shah held a roadshow and addressed two public meetings, Mr Adityanath addressed three public meetings in support of BJP candidates. Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma sought voters' support for party candidates in four public meetings while Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini addressed three. After holding a roadshow in Kasturba Nagar in support of BJP candidate Neeraj Basoya, Mr Shah addressed the public in the Kalkaji constituency, where BJPs Ramesh Bidhuri is contesting against chief minister Atishi and Congress leader Alka Lamba. Mr Shah accused AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal of falsely alleging that the Haryana government mixed poison in the Yamuna and dared the AAP supremo to make public the DJB report that he cited to level the charge. Noting the AAP chief had also claimed that he saved the people of Delhi by stopping the poisonous Yamuna water from entering Delhi, Mr Shah asked him to show the official order issued in this regard. Kejriwal ji, winning and losing are part of the election process. Making an innocent face, you accused the Haryana government of mixing poison (in the Yamuna) and tried to scare the people of Delhi. Politics cannot get dirtier than this, he charged. Mr Shah alleged that AAP leaders were liars and said no one could match Mr Kejriwal when it came to breaking promises. February 5 is a very big opportunity for the people of Delhi to get rid of this 'AAPda'. Vote for the BJP, make Ramesh Bidhuri win (from the Kalkaji seat). Kalkaji will be made No 1 in Delhi, he told the gathering later he campaigned for partys candidate Narayan Dutt Sharma in Badarpur seat. Upping the ante, Mr Adityanath dubbed Delhi's ruling AAP a symbol of corruption and anarchy and urged people in the national capital to vote for a double-engine government of the BJP. Launching a blistering attack, the UP chief minister said AAPs jhadu election symbol should be forfeited for pushing the capital into a civic mess. Mr Adityanath addressed three rallies in Mangolpur, Vikaspuri and Rajinder Nagar, criticising Mr Kejriwal over the stinking Yamuna and accusing the AAP of making Delhiites thirst for water. Sometimes I wonder if the party is possessed by the spirit of Aurangzeb, he remarked. If you had moral courage, you would have taken a dip in the Yamuna, along with ministers of the AAP government, Mr Adityanath said, referring to a recent dip he had taken at the Sangam in Prayagraj during the ongoing Maha Kumbh. He also charged that the party spread anarchy by sheltering Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators. AAP committed 'sin' by providing Aadhaar to Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators in south Delhi's Okhla, he said. AAP's public representatives and office-bearers forcefully occupied hundreds of acres of land of the Uttar Pradesh government's irrigation department near Jamia Nagar and settled Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators, he added. When the land was not vacated despite repeated warnings, Mr Adityanath said he sent the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and bulldozers and, with the Delhi police's help, cleared the land. Mr Adityanath alleged that civic amenities and infrastructure had collapsed in Delhi and people from the city were settling in Noida and Ghaziabad both in Uttar Pradesh for better facilities. Actor-turned-politician and Lok Sabha Members Manoj Tiwari and Ravi Kishan had addressed five and three public meetings respectively seeking votes for saffron party candidates. Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Manohar Lal Khattar, Giriraj Singh, Sukanta Majumdar had addressed one, two, three and two public meetings in support of saffron party candidates. Other prominent leaders, like former Union minister Smriti Irani, member of Parliaments Kiran Choudhary, Bhola Singh, Umesh Nath Maharaj and Pravin Khandelwal, also addressed public meetings in support of BJP candidates. Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari and Rajasthan deputy chief minister Prem Chandra Bairwa also sought votes for BJP candidates. Former MP Locket Chaterjee, BJP SC wing national president Lal Singh Arya, party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also addressed public meetings in different parts of the city.

Virat Kohli trains with Delhi team ahead of Ranji returm
New Delhi: Star India batter Virat Kohli began training with the Delhi team here on Tuesday ahead of his eagerly-awaited Ranji Trophy comeback after a 12-year gap. The 36-year-old Kohli will be playing against Railways from January 30, marking his return to the premier domestic event where he last featured way back in 2012 in a game against Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad. He arrived at the Arun Jaitley Stadium sharp at 9am this morning and after a team huddle and some warm-up exercises, proceeded to play football for about 15 minutes with his teammates. The superstar, who is navigating a slump in form, seemed relaxed in the company of his new teammates almost all of whom are sharing the dressing room with him for the first time and were visibly excited to have him among them. The practice drill was being monitored by Delhi head coach Sarandeep Singh. All star players, including ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma, have showed up for their Ranji teams after the disastrous Test tour of Australia recently. This was owing to a BCCI diktat that players should prioritise domestic cricket whenever their international schedule allows them. While Rohit (Mumbai) and Rishabh Pant (Delhi) did not have much success for their respective teams, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja starred with a 12-wicket haul for Saurashtra and Shubman Gill posted a hundred for Punjab, albeit in a losing cause. Pant, Rohit, Yashasvi Jaiswal (Mumbai) will not be playing the upcoming Ranji matches as they gear up for the ODI series against England starting February 6 in Nagpur. KL Rahul will, however, turn up for Karnataka.
