Ayodhya police bust Rs 3.85 crore Ram Lalla Prasad scam, mastermind arrested
LUCKNOW: Ayodhya Police busted one of the biggest cyber scams in the history of the temple town involving an online fraud of Rs 3.85 crore carried out in the name of Ram Lalla's prasad. Exploiting the spiritual fervour among devotees following Ram Lallas consecration on January 22, 2024, the accused, posed as a professor at Northeastern University in Seattle and lured lakhs of devotees through a fake website offering Ram temple prasad delivered to their doorsteps. The scam was orchestrated by Ashish Singh, originally from Windsor Park, Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, and currently residing in the United States. He launched a fake portal, khadiorganic.com, just weeks before the 2024 consecration ceremony, collecting orders from over 6.3 lakh domestic and international devotees between December 19, 2023, and January 12, 2024. Ashish Singh was offering free delivery of prasad, temple replicas, and commemorative coins of the Ram temple. However, he charged a facilitation fee of Rs 51 from Indian users and USD 11 from overseas devotees. Through his website, Singh collected payments via multiple digital gateways, including Yes Bank, Paytm, PhonePe, MobiKwik, and IDFC, amassing Rs 10.49 crore in transactions, with Rs 3.85 crore of which was for prasad delivery alone, while the rest came from sales of other items. The scam came to light when Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust noticed suspicious online activity and flagged it to the Ayodhya Cyber Crime Unit. A criminal case was promptly registered under IPC Section 420, IT Act Section 66D, and Section 12(3) of the Passport Act, 1967. Ashish, seemingly confident of managing the fallout, returned to India on January 13 this year and travelled to Ayodhya, perhaps with the motive of some kind of negotiations or for a cover-up. But cybercrime cell sleuths arrested him upon his arrival and later presented him as the mastermind of the online fraud. The police recovered a laptop, two iPhones, Rs 13,970 in cash, USD 16, and a slew of identity and banking documents, including US and Indian ID cards, debit cards, a driving licence from Washington, and a health card. As per the Ayodhya police sources, in a cyber recovery operation, Ayodhya Police successfully refunded Rs 2.15 crore to 3,72,520 victims. Recovery efforts for the remaining Rs 1.70 crore are still underway, said the sources. Praising the cyber cell personnel for their swift and methodical response to the scam, Ayodhya SSP Gaurav Grover said it was a scam built on faith. The accused exploited peoples religious sentiments. However, our teams timely action ensured that faith wasnt betrayed entirely, he said while talking to the media. In recognition of their work, the cyber team was rewarded with Rs 15,000. Meanwhile, the Ayodhya Police urged the citizens to exercise caution, especially while making online payments related to religious services, and to verify the authenticity of any such schemes before paying the money. This case is a lesson in digital vigilance, said SSP Grover, adding that faith should never come at the cost of caution.

48 hours after Ghaziabad shooting, cops yet to track key suspect
AHMEDABAD: A nationwide scam involving the online sale of traders' GST data has come to light, with Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Noida identified as hotspots of a gang called Data Solution. The Surat Chartered Accountants Association, in a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, revealed that sensitive GST data is being sold in packagesGSTR-1 for Rs 8,000 Rs 10,000 and 2B, 3B, and e-Way Bill data bundled at Rs 15,000 for three months. The expos has triggered alarm over serious lapses in the GST system and sparked calls for urgent government action. A nationwide racket involving the sale of confidential GST data of traders has surfaced, with brokers operating from office-like setups in Delhi and Ghaziabad. Far from being a backdoor operation, these data dealers function like firms, offering bulk packages of sensitive tax information to clients across the country. Instead of single-use data, brokers are selling three- and six-month bundles, tailored to demand. Rates vary based on the depth of informationRs 5,000 for basic data, Rs 7,000 for more detailed sets, and up to Rs 25,000 for premium access, including e-way bills and HSN codes. The scam gained further traction after a WhatsApp chat between a broker and a trader leaked, revealing conversations around ormal domestic data and enhanced packages featuring e-way bill details. Alarmed by the scale, the Surat Chartered Accountants Association has written to the Finance Minister, demanding urgent action to plug glaring holes in the GST data protection framework. The GST data market is currently very active and illegal, said CAAS President Hardik Kakadia. Its like a black market where confidential information is sold like vegetables in a bazaar. GSTR-1 data alone is going for Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. This reveals exactly to whom a trader has sold their goods. He added that even more comprehensive packages including 2B, 3B and e-Way Bill data are being sold as three-month bundles for Rs 15,000. Its alarming. These data bundles offer a full business blueprint. Anyone can simply duplicate your operations and compete directly. Kakadia said the operation is allegedly being run by a gang named Data Solution, with networks stretching across Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida. We have the details of these packages and supporting evidence of the illegal data sales, he said. He warned that leaking such business information is like handing your playbook to your rivals before the match. This is not just a breach of privacy its a direct threat to fair competition. Were heading towards a situation where doing business wont be safe anymore. CAAS has raised the matter with the Gujarat government but believes the issue demands immediate Central Government intervention. GST was meant to be a 'Good and Simple Tax', but if these problems persist, the entire system may collapse like a house of cards, he cautioned. We dont want lip service. We want action, said the CAAS spokesperson. Our letter to the government clearly outlines the challenges traders face. Without urgent and serious steps, the credibility of the entire GST system is at stake. Sources within the Surat Chartered Accountants Association have revealed a disturbing trendbusinessmen are purchasing GST data of their competitors to gain an edge. Aspiring traders looking to set up shop in a city are allegedly approaching data brokers to access the financial footprints.

The states have also been directed to update and rehearse evacuation plans, crash blackout measures, and early camouflaging of vital plants and installations. Interacting with media persons, the UP DGP Prashant Kumar said that the Centre had identified 19 districts-- one placed in Category 1, two in Category 2 and the remaining 16 in Category 3-- for the exercise. Bulandshahr in western UP has been kept in Category 1; Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bakshi Ka Talab, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Bareilly, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Saharanpur, Sarsawan, and Chandauli are there in Category 2; Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar, both western UP districts, have been kept in Category 3. However, keeping the preparedness in mind and also considering the local sensitivities, the state government has decided to conduct the mock drill across all the state districts, said the DGP. He explained that the exercise would involve coordinated participation from multiple agencies, including the police administration, fire services, and disaster response agencies, to cope with disasters and other critical situations. The mock drill is imperative to ensure better coordination and readiness among all response agencies, said Prashant Kumar. Meanwhile, DG Civil Defence, Abhay Prasad also confirmed the instructions received from the Centre, explaining preparations were already underway to equip civilians with the knowledge and readiness needed in case of any future conflict. He said the mock drill would be conducted between 7 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday. At present, the state Civil Defence department has offices in 15 districts but covers 26 districts through its network. As part of the initiative, an assessment of emergency medical infrastructure, response time, and coordination between various agencies would be assessed in the event of mass casualties and large-scale evacuations. The drill would also foster greater public awareness and resilience in times of national crisis, said a senior state government official.
