FSDA writes to UP district magistrates to invoke Gangster Act in illegal cough syrup case

LUCKNOW: While government agencies are conducting raids and cracking the whip on those allegedly involved in illegal diversion of codeine-based cough syrup and trafficking of narcotic-category medicines, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has shot of letters to 31 district magistrates (DMs) across Uttar Pradesh to book the alleged syndicate operators under the UP Gangsters Act. The FSDA has told the DMs to initiate action under the laws provisions that include seizure of properties disproportionate to the known source of income. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids in a palatial bungalow worth crores, owned by dismissed police constable Alok Kumar Singh in Lucknow on Friday. Alok Kumar Singh, who was arrested in connection with the cough syrup scam, is currently languishing in jail. The ED raided 25 locations simultaneously across six cities in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Gujarat on Friday morning in connection with a major illegal network dealing in codeine-based cough syrup, officials said. The size of Alok Kumar Singhs bungalow and its overt opulence were there to take everyone in awe. Meanwhile, the development regarding the letters written by FSDA to the DMs has come three days after the Uttar Pradesh government formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Inspector General of Police, Law & Order, LR Kumar, to investigate the case. The UP Police and FSDA authorities have carried out raids in 332 firms across 52 districts in UP, during the past two months, lodging FIRs against 133 of them across 31 districts. UP forms SIT to crack Rs 425-crore codeine cough syrup smuggling racket According to FSDA Secretary and Commissioner Roshan Jacob, the department conducted months of intensive investigation spanning Jharkhand, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and collected evidence, including the business links of Uttar Pradeshs super stockists and wholesalers with those states, before launching the raids two months ago. Jacob has also written to district magistrates to initiate action against the jailed operators under the Gangsters Act. As per the FSDA commissioner, CM Yogi had issued directives for stringent action against the culprits ensuring that no diversion takes place from Uttar Pradesh to any other state or country. He (CM) instructed officials not to trouble small traders during enforcement but ensure firm action against super stockists and wholesalers involved in illicit activities, Jacob said. According to officials, for the first time, cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for illegal diversion of codeine-based cough syrup. Earlier, such violations were dealt with only through licence cancellations. Informed sources reveal that while probing the records of 332 drug-selling establishments, it was found that many of them did not actually exist and were functioning only as billing points with no purchase or sale records. Many others lacked proper storage arrangements. Out of the 332 firms, 133 were found to be involved in the organised illegal diversion of these medicines for non-medical use. It was discovered that the diverted stock was being routed primarily through state capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Bahraich to Nepal, and from Varanasi and Ghaziabad to Bangladesh. Cases of trafficking of codeine-based cough syrup for drug abuse have been identified in cities including Varanasi, Jaunpur, Kanpur Nagar, Ghazipur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Lucknow, Bahraich, Bijnor, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Sitapur, Sonbhadra, Balrampur, Raebareli, Sant Kabir Nagar, Hardoi, Bhadohi, Amethi, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Unnao, Basti, Ambedkarnagar, Azamgarh, Saharanpur, Bareilly, Sultanpur, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Banda, and Kaushambi, officials said.

UP forms SIT to crack Rs 425-crore codeine cough syrup smuggling racket

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday announced the formation of a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to dismantle an organised racket involving the illegal diversion of codeine-based cough syrup for narcotic abuse. The smuggling case came to light around 20 days ago when a truck loaded with codeine-based cough syrup was seized in Sonbhadra. Speaking to the media, FSDA Secretary Roshan Jacob, accompanied by Principal Secretary Sanjay Prasad and DGP Rajeev Krishna, said the SIT had been formed to investigate the case. Three accused have been arrested so far. Jacob said misleading information was being circulated on social media. Police have taken action. A truck of cough syrup was caught in Sonbhadra some 20 days ago and based on that evidence, a second truck was recovered in Ranchi, she said. She clarified that the UP case has no connection with a similar case reported in Madhya Pradesh. She said the investigation had been expanded to 300 drug dealers to trace the main supply channels. We want to reach the big traders, not the small retailers, Jacob added. UP DGP Rajeev Krishna said that using cough syrup for any purpose other than its normal medical use amounted to a legal offence. Several pieces of evidence have been found in the last two months. FSDA has registered 128 FIRs across 28 districts, including 38 in Varanasi, 16 in Jaunpur, eight in Kanpur, six in Ghazipur and four each in Lakhimpur Kheri and Lucknow, he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who holds the health portfolio, said in Jaunpur that strict action would be taken against the guilty irrespective of their social standing. The DGP added that 279 medical stores were inspected, and many were found to be non-existent. Others had serious anomalies in sale and purchase records. It reflects that the firms were selling cough syrup in an organised manner as an intoxicant, not a medicine. The drug was being supplied from Lucknow, Lakhimpur, Bahraich, Varanasi, Ghaziabad and even Nepal to Bangladesh, he said. In a parallel crackdown, the SIT constituted by the Varanasi Police Commissionerate to probe the smuggling racket run by Shubham Jaiswal of Varanasi arrested two close associates of the kingpin. The racket was operated through his firm, Shelly Traders. Shubham Jaiswal is believed to have fled to Dubai along with his associates Gaurav Jaiswal and Varun Singh on November 5. His father, Bhola Prasad Jaiswal, was arrested at Kolkata airport on November 30 while attempting to fly to Dubai. The two accused arrested on Monday, Vishal Jaiswal and Badal Arya, revealed key details during interrogation. They allegedly earned large sums by setting up shell firms, receiving Rs 25,00030,000 per consignment. The SIT also uncovered suspicious transactions worth Rs 425 crore linked to Shubham Jaiswal over the past two years. DCP Gaurav Basbal said Shubham Jaiswal had left India and look-out circulars were being issued. A Red Corner Notice would also be sought through Interpol. The arrested duo told interrogators that CA Devesh Jaiswal had full access to Shubhams bank accounts. They said they had conducted business worth around Rs 7 crore with him within a year. One of the accused, Badal Arya, claimed Devesh Jaiswal helped him open his firm. The other accused, Vishal Jaiswal of Hukumganj, also said Devesh Jaiswal helped him open a firm named Hariom Pharma. I would place orders but the syrup never came to my shop. I used to get Rs 20,00030,000 in cash, he said. SIT chief ADCP Kashi Zone Saravanan T said two more suspects were being questioned and their documents were being scrutinised.

Delhi fourth most polluted city in India; all top 10 cities from Haryana, UP: Study

CHANDIGARH: Delhi ranked fourth among the most polluted cities in the country in November, as per a report released by Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Ghaziabad topped the list, followed by Noida, Bahadurgarh, Delhi, Hapur, Greater Noida, Baghpat, Sonipat, Meerut and Rohtak. Despite a significant reduction in stubble-burning, 20 out of 29 cities in National Capital Region (NCR) recorded higher pollution levels than the previous year. Punjab and Haryana had been blamed in the past for being the primary cause of air pollution in the NCR; the two states have registered an 80 to 90 per cent drop in farm fire cases over the last four years. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA)s November 2025 Monthly Air Quality Snapshot, draws data from real-time continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations (CAAQMS) PM2.5. The report indicates a substantial deterioration in air quality across the country. Ghaziabad emerged as the most polluted city in the country in November this year with a monthly average PM2.5 concentration of 224 g/m, violating the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) on every day of the month, the report stated. It further said the city experienced 19 Very Poor days, 10 Severe days, and one Poor day. The report further reads, Uttar Pradesh accounted for six of the top ten cities, followed by Haryana with three, along with Delhi. All cities in the top 10 list recorded higher PM2.5 levels than the previous year, except for Delhi. Delhi ranked as the fourth most polluted city, recording a monthly average PM2.5 concentration of 215 g/m in November, about twice its October level of 107 g/m. The city experienced 23 Very Poor days, six Severe days, and one Poor day throughout November, the report stated. Despite widespread pollution, the contribution of stubble burning was an average of 7 per cent in November, down from 20 per cent last year. Peak contributions of stubble burning reached 22 per cent, significantly lower than 38 per cent recorded in the previous year. Except for Bahadurgarh, none of the top ten cities recorded even a single day within the safe daily NAAQS limit. Several other cities, including Charkhi Dadri, Bulandshahr, Jind, Muzaffarnagar, Gurgaon, Khurja, Bhiwani, Karnal, Yamunanagar and Faridabad, also recorded PM2.5 levels above NAAQS every day of the month. Sonipat recorded very poor' air quality with PM 2.5 at 121-250 g/m on 29 of the 30 days, while Bahadurgarh remained the second most polluted with a PM 2.5 average of 215 g/m, it added. While seven cities of Punjab exceeded the standard as Mandi Gobindgarh was the most polluted in Punjab with PM 2.5 at 93 g/m. Despite a significant reduction in stubble-burning influence, 20 out of 29 NCR cities recorded higher pollution levels than the previous year, and many still did not register a single day within NAAQS limits. This clearly indicates that the dominant drivers are year-round sources such as transport, industry, power plants, and other combustion sources. Without sector-specific emission cuts, cities will continue to breach standards, said Manoj Kumar, analyst at CREA. At the state level, Rajasthan had the largest number of polluted cities, with 23 of 34 exceeding the NAAQS in November. Haryana had 22 of 25 such cities, while Uttar Pradesh had 14 of 20 above the standard. Pollution levels were also high across other states, with 9 of 12 cities in Madhya Pradesh, 9 of 14 in Odisha, and 7 of 8 in Punjab recording concentrations above NAAQS.

NEW DELHI: More than 700 cough syrup manufacturers were subjected to intense audit and increased market surveillance sampling of syrup formulations was done by central and state drugs regulators in the wake of children deaths allegedly due to consumption of contaminated cough syrups, Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday. Upon receipt of reports of a cluster of child deaths from Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, a central team of experts visited Chhindwara and Nagpur and undertook a detailed investigation of the reported cases and deaths in coordination with the Madhya Pradesh state authorities, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel said in a written reply. The team comprised an epidemiologist, a microbiologist, an entomologist, and drug inspectors from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), National Institute of Virology (NIV), and Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). The premises of M/s Sresan Pharmaceuticals was inspected. Several critical and major good manufacturing practices violations including unhygienic storage conditions were observed, the matter regarding the criminal action against the manufacturer was taken up by CDSCO with the Tamil Nadu government, she said. The state drugs controller Nadu cancelled the manufacturing licence. Further, following the incident, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Puducherry, where the impugned cough syrup batches were supplied, ordered immediate ban and recall, Patel informed. Criminal case has been registered in the matter by Madhya Pradesh and strict action has been taken including the arrest of persons involved. An advisory has been issued on October 3 to health departments and healthcare facilities of all states and Union territories to ensure rational use of paediatric cough syrups, Patel said. Noida Police arrests bus driver for murder after woman's headless body found in drain

NOIDA: A 34-year-old bus driver has been arrested for the alleged murder of a woman whose headless and limbless body was found in a drain in Noida on November 6, police said on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Yamuna Prasad said the body was found in a drain under the limits of Sector-39 police station, with toe rings being the only identifiable clue. Nine police teams were formed to trace the woman's identity and the suspect. More than 5,000 CCTV cameras were scanned and around 1,100 vehicles were checked. Of these, 44 vehicles were shortlisted and their owners and drivers were questioned, Prasad said. The investigation led the police to a white-and-blue bus seen moving suspiciously near the crime scene on November 5 with its lights switched off. The bus, bearing registration number UP16 KT 0037, was traced to driver Monu Singh alias Monu Solanki, a resident of Barola here, the police said. Further inquiries revealed that the woman, identified as Preeti Yadav, alias Preeti Devi, had been missing for five to six days and was known to be in a prolonged dispute with Singh. She was later confirmed to be the victim, the officer said. Police arrested Singh on Friday and recovered the bus, bloodstained mat, clothes of the deceased and other remains based on his disclosure. During interrogation, Singh allegedly told police that he had been in an illicit relationship with Preeti, who worked in a jeans factory in Barola along with her mother. He claimed she had begun extorting money from him and frequently threatened to implicate him or involve his daughters in illegal activities, the DCP said. Prasad said the accused confessed to picking up Preeti on November 5 after taking a 'gadansa' (sharp-edged tool) from her house without her knowledge. They ate food inside the bus, after which an argument broke out. Singh claimed he attacked her with the weapon, beheaded her and severed her hands to hide her identity, he said. The accused allegedly disposed of the torso in a drain in Noida and dumped other remains and the weapon in a dry drain near Siddharth Vihar in Ghaziabad. Forensic examination of the bus and seized items confirmed the presence of human blood, Prasad said. An FIR has been registered under Sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further legal proceedings are underway, the police added.

Syrup deaths: Regulator blocks prosecution info

NEW DELHI: India faced intense international heat after over 100 children died due to contaminated cough syrups made by three pharma companies in The Gambia and Uzbekistan. However, after the initial outrage, international alerts, and announcements of probe in 2022-2023, Indias drug regulator has refused to share the action taken against the pharma companies that were at the centre of the international storm, a latest RTI query revealed. Not only did the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) refuse to reveal the details of the investigation and the subsequent prosecution against the three firms Maiden Pharmaceuticals, Marion Biotech Pharmaceuticals and Fourrts (India) Pvt Ltd it also cited a section of the RTI Act to stonewall information. While Maiden was linked to the deaths of over 60 children in The Gambia, Marion was blamed for the deaths of 18 in Uzbekistan. Both syrups had dangerous levels of the toxins diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG). Fourrts was flagged in 2023 for containing high DEG and EG. In its reply, CDSCO, Chennai, said on Fourrts, no such information is available. Besides, The information sought by the applicant is exempted under Sec 8 (1) (d) (g) (h) of the RTI Act 2005. CDSCO, Ghaziabad, said: ...stop production order, suspension, cancellation of licenses/product licenses etc. have been taken. No word on prosecution. Thats the reason why the pharma companies continue to flout the laws, RTI activist Dr K V Babu said. Stonewalling RTI query RTI activist Dr K V Babu said, CDSCO refused to share the status of investigation and prosecution against the 3 pharma companies. It shows there is no visible action or prosecution by the authority against them.

Luxury Homes as Long-term Wealth: Why NCR Remains A Safe Bet

Luxury housing in NCR has evolved far beyond its earlier identity as a symbol of prestigeits now viewed as a reliable wealth-preserving asset. In a time when global markets are fluctuating and traditional investments are facing volatility, luxury real estate in NCR stands out for its steady appreciation and dependable rental yields. Affluent buyers and investors increasingly view these properties not merely as indulgences, but as tangible, inflation-proof assets. Whether in Gurugrams high-growth corridors or Noidas emerging luxury zones, new-age homes today represent financial stability, lifestyle security, and a long-term hedge against uncertainty. Luxury residences in NCR stand tall as timeless symbols of stability, prestige, and long-term wealth What gives NCR its enduring edge is the strength of its locations and the quality of life they offer. Gurugram, Noida, Delhi, and hubs such as Dwarka Expressway and Siddharth Vihar have become synonymous with modern luxury, defined by world-class infrastructure, excellent connectivity, and a cosmopolitan way of living. The regions rapid urban evolution, coupled with strong corporate presence and lifestyle amenities, continues to attract diversified buyers seeking both comfort and capital growth. Yukti Nagpal, Director, Gulshan Nagpal says, Luxury real estate in NCRparticularly in the NoidaGreater Noida corridorhas transitioned from being viewed as an indulgence to becoming a strategic wealth creation asset. Todays discerning buyers, including millennials and global Indians, seek homes that blend timeless design with enduring value. In prime sectors along the Noida Expressway, weve consistently witnessed growth in both resale and rental appreciation, reinforcing the confidence that luxury homes here are not just aspirational investments, but enduring financial assets. The narrative has clearly evolvedbuyers are no longer acquiring square footage; they are investing in a legacy of lifestyle, location, and long-term security . The CBRE-ASSOCHAM report highlights that Indias luxury segment grew 85% year-on-year, with Delhi NCR leading the charge, recording nearly 4,000 luxury unit salesa threefold annualised jump. Property values in Noida and Greater Noida have mirrored this momentum, rising over 92% in five years, with Greater Noida alone seeing a 98% price increase, signalling strong capital appreciation potential for investors. Prateek Group in the Noida-Ghaziabad region exemplifies this balance, setting benchmarks for refined living and steady long-term appreciation. With its projects like Prateek Grand Begonia in Siddharth Vihar, Ghaziabad, the project offers a rare combination: a desirable lifestyle today and a resilient, wealth-building asset for tomorrow. On the other hand, Prateek Canary in Noidas Sector-150 stands as a benchmark of aspirational living, designed for families who wish to pass down not just a home, but a symbol of refined luxury and timeless elegance. Its low-density design, resort-style club amenities, and expansive balconies overlooking lush greens reflect a deep understanding of modern, multi-generational lifestyles. Yash Miglani, Managing Director, Migsun Group , says, The luxury segment in Noida-Greater Noida has emerged as a safe harbour for wealth creation. Unlike speculative markets, NCRs top micro-locations are witnessing end-user-led demand, ensuring sustainable growth. Whats noteworthy is that luxury buyers are increasingly end-users themselvesprofessionals who value design, comfort, and community living while being mindful of long-term capital appreciation. That combination makes this market incredibly resilient . According to JLL, the luxury housing market in Delhi NCR continues to demonstrate remarkable growth. In the first half of 2025, sales touched 5,168 units, reflecting an 8.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Gurugram emerged as the dominant contributor, accounting for 91% of NCRs luxury sales and securing 65% of high-end home transactions across Indias top seven cities. Within Gurugram, corridors like Southern Peripheral Road and Dwarka Expressway alone drove 61% of luxury sales, underscoring the importance of prime micro-markets. Saurab Saharan, Group Managing Director, HCBS Developments says, The narrative of Gurugrams luxury real estate is inseparable from the rise of Dwarka Expressway. Today, it stands out as a prime destination for buyers seeking a blend of refined living and long-term investment security. As developers, weve observed a growing preference for smart, secure, and amenity-rich residences along this corridor. Coupled with the rapid development of social infrastructure, Dwarka Expressway is not just enhancing lifestyle standards but also strengthening capital appreciation potential. From our perspective, this corridor will remain a catalyst for Gurugrams luxury market, driving both premium living and sustainable wealthcreation. Rising interest from HNIs and NRIs, combined with a growing preference for tangible, high-value assets, has kept demand consistently high. Branded, well-positioned developments continue to outperform expectations, delivering strong capital appreciation alongside attractive rental yields. Ajay Tyagi, Chief Sales Officer, Better Choice Realtors , says, Gurugrams luxury market has transitioned from being aspirational to asset-based. The confluence of infrastructure expansion, corporate hubs, and international-standard developments ensures sustained demand. Besides, investors today are keenly aware that a premium address in Gurugram, be it along Golf Course Extension Road or Dwarka Expressway, delivers both prestige and predictable ROI. Hence, we foresee luxury here becoming a serious portfolio component, not just a lifestyle statement. Thus, beyond offering world-class living experiences, premium properties in Gurugram, Noida, and emerging hubs like Dwarka Expressway and Siddharth Vihar provide investors with a reliable store of value. The market continues to draw discerning buyers who are not just seeking a home, but a long-term asset that combines capital security with an elevated lifestyle. In this way, luxury real estate in NCR remains a compelling avenue for those looking to preserve and grow wealth over decades.

Three suspected criminals caught after police encounter in west Delhi

NEW DELHI: Three men with a history of serious criminal offences were injured in an exchange of fire with police in west Delhi's Nangloi area in the early hours of Saturday, police said. Earlier this week, they fired on a police patrol team in Nangloi while fleeing after a botched burglary attempt, they said. According to police, around 3.35 am on Saturday, they spotted the suspects near Prem Nagar Crossing following inputs that armed men on a motorcycle were in the area, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sachin Sharma said. When the police team signalled them to stop for verification, the trio tried to escape but their motorcycle skidded. They opened indiscriminate fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory action, he said. During the exchange of fire, the accused sustained bullet injuries in their legs, while Sub-Inspector Yogender and Head Constable Vikas Kumar escaped unhurt as the bullets hit their bulletproof jackets, the officer said. Firoz alias Sajid (32), Md Kamran alias Shahrukh alias Md Sharif (38) and Osaf Ali (48), all residents of Loni in Ghaziabad, were apprehended after the encounter. The injured accused were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri where they are undergoing treatment, police said. Police recovered one country-made pistol, two .32-bore pistols, four live cartridges and five empty shells from their possession. The weapons have been sent for forensic examination. Earlier on October 22, the same trio had allegedly opened fire on a police patrol near Mangolpuri flyover after being intercepted in a suspicious car while attempting to break into a hardware shop in Nangloi. When challenged, the suspects fled in the car, he said, adding that a hot chase ensued. After chasing around 5 km, the patrolling bike ran parallel to the fleeing car and warned the occupants to stop. However, one of the accused persons in the co-driver seat opened fire on the chasing police party near Mangolpuri flyover, he added. A police officer challenged them by firing two rounds, during which one bullet hit the car forcing the suspects to abandon the car and escape while firing bullets on the police team. A case was registered in connection with that incident, and multiple teams were formed to track down the accused using technical surveillance and eyewitness inputs. The accused have a long criminal history, including cases of robbery, dacoity, kidnapping for ransom and offences under the Arms Act. In 2017, while fleeing after committing dacoity, Firoz allegedly fired at the police with the intention to kill, police said. The officer added that the crime scene has been inspected by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Crime Team, and further investigation is underway. Appropriate legal action has been initiated in connection with the latest encounter, police said.

Indian Railways starts playing Chhath songs at over 100 stations across nation

NEW DELHI: Ahead of Bihars Chhath festival, Indian Railways has introduced a unique arrangement of playing popular folk songs dedicated to the Chhath festival at over 100 prominent stations across the country. In the first phase, this initiative has been implemented at 30 different stations, where announcements of train departures or arrivals pause for a while. During these intervals, folk songs sung by well-known singers such as Sharda Sinha, Nitu Kumari Navgeet, Vindyavasni Devi and others are played when no train information is being broadcast over the automated announcement system. The Railways has started playing Chhatha songs at more than 30 stations in Bihar, including Patna, Danapur, Hajipur, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Sonepur and others. Similar arrangements for playing Chhatha songs have also been made at New Delhi, Ghaziabad and Anand Vihar Terminal, which are now witnessing heavy footfall of passengers travelling to Bihar and other Hindi-speaking states for the festival. Confirming this to the newspaper, ED (I&P) Dileep Kumar of the Ministry of Railways said on Friday, Indian Railways has started broadcasting Chhatha songs at railway stations on the auspicious occasion of Chhatha Puja. The aim of this initiative is to connect the passengers with the auspicious spirit of the festival and make their journey more pleasant. This has been launched at almost all those stations that now witness large numbers of Bihar-bound passengers travelling for the Chhatha festival across the country. Savita Kumari, a passenger travelling from Kolkata to Patna with her family members for the Chhatha festival, said These devotional songs being played at railway stations during Chhatha Puja surcharge the ambience of station with religious festivity for the devotees, who either remain in wait to take trains or boarding in trains. A senior railway official told the newspaper that the Chhatha folk songs being played make passengers feel the fragrance of their home and culture, thereby infusing devotion and joy into their journey even when they remain away from their states. Begun on Friday, the initiative through the automatic announcement system will continue for several days after the end of Chhatha, covering the period when passengers make their return journeys. Others stations such as Banaras, Gorakhpur and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, Burdwan, Durgapur and Asansol in West Bengal, as well as Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab, are among the hundreds of stations where this initiative has been introduced. Currently, Indian Railways is operating more than 12,000 special train trips to manage the surge of passengers travelling from across the country to states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where the Chhatha festival is celebrated on a large scale.
