High level of dissolved lead in Indian Ocean: Study
BENGALURU: A study by the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, and the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad has found higher concentration of dissolved lead (dPb) in the northern and central Indian Ocean (IO), which is much higher (23114 pM) compared to other ocean basins such as the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, with clear a north-south decreasing gradient. The recent study conducted by scientists Chhaya Yadav, Sunil Kumar Singh and Venkatesh Chinni states that among the Asian countries, China and India have exhibited a substantial rise in lead emissions by coal combustion, with an increase of 4.3 to 4.8 times over a last 33-year period; 12.5 and 82.8 thousand tonnes annually for India and China respectively in 2023, due to coal burning. Apart from coal combustion, climatic events such as the Indian Ocean Dipole, which controls dry/wet conditions and dust storms, play a substantial role in the addition of dPb over the southern Indian Ocean, states the study during which the authors had examined the distribution dPb in the IO, based on seawater samples collected during winter monsoon and spring inter-monsoon cruises in 2020 and 2021. Most of the dPb comes from anthropogenic sources largely through coal combustion by atmospheric deposition. The concentration of Pb in Asian aerosols has been found to be significantly higher than in other regions because of increasing emissions from coal combustion, industrial processes, and vehicular emissions. This has led to a higher flux of Pb to the northern and central IO over the past 20 years, stated the report published in Marine Pollution Bulletin. Monitoring and understanding lead dynamics in the IO is crucial because of the high levels of industrial emissions and their environmental impact. Pb is a toxic metal that can cause serious health issues, with even low levels of exposure being harmful, especially in vulnerable populations, such as children and pregnant women. Studies have shown that developmental exposure to lead is linked to adult criminal behaviour, highlighting the importance of monitoring lead levels in the environment to protect human health. Atmospheric transport is the primary pathway for lead to enter the open ocean, with surface waters near continents being most significantly affected by aerosols from pollutants or natural crustal sources. Concentrations of dPb in the mixed layer ranged from 23 to 114 pM, with elevated values in the northern IO. A pronounced latitudinal gradient was observed as dPb concentration decreased from north to south. Substantially higher Pb contribution from continental shelf sediments in Bay of Bengal highlights impact of enhanced sediment loading, primarily driven by the Ganga-Brahmaputra river system, the report stated. The authors observed that in the past decade, there has been a notable shift in lead sources, with a decrease in leaded gasoline emissions and there has been an increase in industrial sources such as coal combustion for power generation and other usage such as ore and metal processing. Anthropogenically derived metals generally have a higher seawater solubility than those derived from crustal aerosol populations.

Dust storm, gusty winds sweep Delhi; IMD issues red alert
NEW DELHI: Delhi and its surrounding areas were swept by strong, dusty winds for the second consecutive evening on Friday as a fresh round of thunderstorms and light rain brought relief from the ongoing heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the national capital and the NCR region, warning of moderate to severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds up to 80 km/h in isolated areas. The alert remained in place till 9 pm. The sudden shift in weather, driven by an active western disturbance, has led to a drop in temperatures and improved air quality. Friday morning began with overcast skies and sporadic drizzle in several parts of the city. IMD data showed Mayur Vihar recorded 5 mm of rain, while Safdarjung reported only a trace. The minimum temperature stood at 22.8 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal. Residents reported seeing trees swaying under strong winds, with some branches snapping and falling in areas like Lodhi Garden and Delhi Gate. A tree reportedly fell on a parked motorcycle, though no serious injuries were reported. Power outages were noted in parts of Noida and Ghaziabad as well. The storm has caused concerns about crop and infrastructure damage. The IMD advised people to remain indoors, avoid sheltering under trees, unplug appliances, and keep away from water bodies during the storm window. The weather office said thunderstorms and light rain would likely continue through Saturday. This comes after the capital experienced a heatwave earlier in the week, with temperatures hitting 40 degrees Celsius on Monday and recording the warmest April night in three years at 25.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The AQI on Friday morning was 172, placing the air quality in the moderate category.

BSP leader Mayawatis niece files FIR against husband, in-laws over dowry abuse
LUCKNOW: BSP supremo Mayawati's niece filed a dowry harassment complaint against nine persons, including her husband, mother-in-law, the municipal council chairperson and father-in-law, in Hapur district. The BSP chiefs niece Alice, who got the FIR lodged after the intervention of the local court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, accused her in-laws of demanding Rs 50 lakh as dowry and a flat in Ghaziabad while claiming that her husband Vishal Singh was impotent. The FIR lodged by the Kotwali police station abiding by the court order, also named Vishals elder brother, his wife, Vishals sister and his uncle. The complainants mother-in-law, Pushpa Devi had once contested assembly election on a BSP ticket. In fact, Mayawati has got nine siblings. She has six brothersSiddharth, Naresh, Subhash, Titu, Rajkumar and Anand Kumar who is BSPs national vice-president, and two sisters. The victim is the daughter of Naresh Kumar. In her complaint, the victim told police that she was married to Vishal Singh, a resident of Ramlila Ground in Hapur, on November 9, 2023 at Hotel Hyatt in Delhi. After the marriage, her husband, father-in-law Shripal Singh, mother-in-law Pushpa Devi, brother-in-law Bhupendra alias Monu, sisters-in-law Nisha and Shivani and maternal uncle-in-law Akhilesh started demanding a flat in Indirapuram in Ghaziabad and Rs 50 lakh saying that she was related to BSP chief who had no dearth of money. So, she could easily arrange Rs 50 lakh and a flat. On refusing to meet their demand, the victim was allegedly abused, beaten up and was given life threats. She also alleged that her husband used to take steroid injections for body building before marriage, and he was rendered impotent due to excessive use of steroids. Her in-laws knew about it but they did not tell her or her family before marriage. Claiming that her married life was completely ruined, the victim said when she raised the issue with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, they threatened her and even asked her to get a child through Vishals elder brother Bhupendra. Alice said, on the night of February 17, 2025, she had a dispute with her husband. After this, her brother-in-law and father-in-law took her to a room, where they thrashed her. The victim added that she was somehow saved after she raised an alarm. The victim alleged her in-laws told her that since Mayawatis clout was dwindling, they were not afraid of her nor could she harm them. On February 18, Alice called her parents and filed a complaint at the local police station. She stated that despite her written complaint, no police action was initiated against her in-laws due to her mother-in-laws influence. Then, on March 21, she sent her complaint through a registered post to SP, Hapur, but to no avail. This led the victim to approach the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on March 24 and file a petition. On April 8, the court ordered the local police to register a case against accused Vishal Singh, and eight others. SP Gyananjay Singh said a case was registered and action would be taken against the accused after the probe. The FIR was lodged against the accused under sections 85, 115(2), 352, 351(2), 74,75,76, 3 and 4 of BNS.

Fake doctor accused of killing seven cardiac patients in MP arrested in Prayagraj
BHOPAL: Fake cardiologist N John Camm , whose role is being probed in connection with the deaths of at least seven cardiac patients at Mission Hospital in Madhya Pradeshs Damoh district, has been arrested from the Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh. Acting on specific inputs, Camm (whose actual name is believed to be Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav) was arrested from a flat of a premium township in Prayagraj on Monday afternoon, more than 12 hours after a FIR was lodged against him in MPs Damoh district at Sunday midnight. He is being brought from Prayagraj and will be in Damoh by late night, Damoh district police superintendent Shrutkirti Somvanshi told TNIE. Earlier on Sunday midnight, a case was registered against Camm and others on the complaint by Damoh districts chief medical and health officer Dr MK Jain, u/s 318(4), 338, 336(3), 340(2) and 3(5) BNS (which deal with cheating, forgery of documents and joint criminal liability for crime committed with a common intent). Section 25 of MP Ayarvaidic Adhiniyam was also included in the FIR against the fake cardiologist, who is believed to be named Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav. The case was registered based on findings of a probe conducted in the matter by a panel of government doctors headed by the CMHO. The panel was constituted in the matter by the Damoh district collector Sudhir Kochar, following allegations by local advocate Deepak Tiwari about seven deaths having happened following surgical procedures performed by Camm at the Missionary Hospital in Damoh. The panel during its probe has concluded that the documents (related to his medical qualifications/expertise) are suspected/fake. The panel has also concluded that deaths of some patients happened due to angiography/angioplasty conducted by Camm. Further specialized probe into the seven deaths of patients which allegedly happened following the minimally invasive surgical procedures by Camm, has been referred to cardiologists at the government medical college in Jabalpur. Importantly, the Damoh Kotwali police registered a case against the fake doctor on Sunday midnight, just a few hours after a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team also began investigations into the matter on Monday. Three families, all from Damoh district (who lost their loved ones due to the surgical procedures by the fake doctor) have recorded their statements before the NHRC team on Monday. It's hard to comprehend why the FIR was registered on the CMHOs complaint just a few hours before the NHRC began its probe, is it face-saving? Also, why does the FIR only name the fake doctor among the accused, what about the hospital management not being named in the concerned FIR? The hospitals owner Ajay Lal is already accused in multiple cases, including those pertaining to religious conversion, questioned Deepak Tiwari. What is the issue? According to Tiwari, local advocate and president of the District Child Welfare Committee, they received a complaint from a patient in February, who doubted the credential of N John Camm, as he (Camm) was unable to conduct proper diagnosis. A subsequent probe by Tiwaris team revealed that at least seven fatalities had happened due to the surgical procedures performed by Camm, following which the entire issue was brought to the notice of the Damoh district administration, ensued by the start of a probe by a panel of government doctors headed by the CMHO. According to sources associated with the ongoing investigations, N John Camm (whose real name is believed to be Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav) carried out 15 non-invasive surgical cardiac procedures between January 1, 2025 and February 12, 2025, but he became untraceable after the entire issue of surgical procedures having caused seven deaths came to the fore in February. While total seven deaths have happened, possibly three to four actually happened after the angiography/angioplasty performed by N John Camm, a key source forming part of the ongoing probe claimed. But its not just the seven deaths which are the cause of concern, its also the fake/suspected documents submitted by N John Camm at the Mission Hospital for proving his medical expertise, which are particularly under the scanner. In the documents he claims to have passed MBBS from the University of North Bengals medical college, but enquiry into the registration number mentioned in the document, has turned out to be actually allotted to a doctor in Varanasi (UP). Also, the documents pertaining to MD and DM (Cardiology) from medical colleges of southern India seem suspected. Also, the Andhra Medical Council license number rendered to the hospital by Camm in Damoh, actually doesnt exist, which clearly suggests that he is not just a fake cardiologist, but also a fake doctor, a police officer forming part of the probe said. Whos N John Camm? Though he is named in official documents, including the Aadhar as N John Camm, primary investigations suggest his real name could be Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav, a native of Uttarakhand capital Dehradun. He possibly attained the identity of N John Camm, to strike close resemblance with Prof John Camm, the professor emeritus of clinical cardiology at St Georges University of London. The famous British cardiologist reportedly had confirmed to a fact-checking website that his identity was being misused by Yadav. The fake doctor reportedly operated a website under the name njohncamm.com and also rang a twitter account under the handle @njohncamm, which is suspended now. Yadavs claim about having worked in the past with the British cardiologist Dr John Camm, too have been found to be false. In July 2023, Yadav using the same twitter account, had posted that UP CM Yogi Adityanath could control the riots in France within 24 hours. The concerned tweet was shared by many news channels, but some were later deleted following questions about the accounts authenticity. He had also reportedly posted purportedly photoshopped pictures with UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar under a fake name in the past. More cases against him in other states? While the FIR against the fake doctor was registered in MPs Damoh district on Sunday midnight, there could be more criminal cases in which he is accused in other parts of the country. Were enquiring about the possibility of multiple cases against him elsewhere, including Noida and Ghaziabad in UP, one police station in Telangana district and also possibility of a case registered against him in Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), the Damoh district police superintendent Shrutkirti Somvanshi said.

Nithari killings case: SC to hear pleas challenging Surendra Koli's acquittal on April 3
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would hear on April 3, a batch of petitions challenging the acquittal of Surendra Koli in the 2006 Nithari serial killings case. The apex court had last year agreed to examine separate pleas, including those filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Uttar Pradesh government, challenging the Allahabad High Court's decision acquitting Koli on October 16, 2023. The pleas were listed for hearing on Tuesday before a bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih. One of the lawyers appearing in the case mentioned the matter before the bench and requested that the pleas be taken up for hearing next week. Terming it an extraordinary case, the counsel said children were going missing in Nithari for about two years and later, the police found several skeletal remains. We will grant leave and will have it on some Thursday, the bench said and posted the matter for April 3. Koli's counsel had earlier told the apex court that evidence against him was a confessional statement, recorded several days after his police custody in the case. One of the pleas in the top court has been filed by the father of one of the victims challenging the high court's verdict. Koli was awarded death penalty on September 28, 2010 by the trial court. Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help Koli were accused of rape and murder of persons, mostly children from their neighbourhood in Nithari, UP. The high court acquitted them in the death penalty case and said the prosecution had failed to prove their guilt eyond reasonable doubt and called it a otched up investigation. Reversing the death sentence given to Koli in 12 cases and Pandher in two cases, the high court said the probe was othing short of a betrayal of public trust by responsible agencies. The high court allowed multiple appeals filed by Koli and Pandher, who challenged the death sentence awarded by a CBI court in Ghaziabad. A total of 19 cases were lodged against the duo in 2007, and the CBI filed closure reports in three cases due to lack of evidence. Koli was acquitted in three of the 16 remaining cases and his death sentence in one case was commuted to life. The killings came to light with the discovery of the skeletal remains of eight children from a drain behind Pandher's house at Nithari in Noida, bordering the national capital, on December 29, 2006. Further digging and searches of drains in the area around the house led to more skeletal remains. Most of these remains were those of children and young women who went missing in the area. The CBI took over the case within 10 days of the crime and its search resulted in the recovery of more human remains.
