Karnataka considering law against hate speech and online betting, says CM Siddaramaiah
BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that his government is seriously considering a law against hate speech added that discussions were on regarding enacting a law against online betting. The CM said this at the end of a two-day review meeting with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of all districts and CEOs of all Zilla Panchayats here. I have said if anyone makes hate speech, action should be taken against them. We will bring a law against it. The government is seriously considering it, Siddaramaiah said. Speaking to reporters here, he said, Merciless action should be taken against those making hate speeches irrespective of how influential they are. Criminal cases should be filed against them. Reiterating that there is a direct relationship between law and order and development and that they should be ensured across the state, the CM said he has given strict instructions to the DCs and SPs to nip in the bud, the forces that disrupt the intentions and objectives of the Constitution. This statement has come in the wake of recent communal murders that have taken place in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada. Regarding online betting, Siddaramaiah said Law Minister H K Patil and IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge are discussing the action that needs to be taken in this regard and if there is need for a legislation. Based on what they suggest after the discussion, necessary action will be taken, he said. Youngsters are falling prey to the cricket betting, and activities such as gambling, matka should be strictly controlled in the districts, he further said, this menace should be curbed ruthlessly without giving in to any pressure. Also, instructions have been given to take strict action against those violating the law that has been enacted, aimed at protecting borrowers from harassment by microfinance institutions (MFIs), he said. Noting that about 700 child marriages took place in the state last year (2024-25), Siddaramaiah said he has instructed to ensure that child marriages don't happen at all at any cost. There are laws against child marriage. Preventing them is one part. It should also be ensured that they don't happen at any cost. Also child pregnancy cases should also be prevented, he said, adding that the officers at the grassroot level should be used to ensure that they are stopped in both urban and rural areas. Officials have been asked to bring down the Infant Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Rate in the state, he said. The DCs, CEOs and SPs are the three most important posts in the districts and these officers should leave their ego and work as a bridge between the government and the people. Only if there is coordination between these three, the development of the district is possible, he said.

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Cyber Crime Police arrested 10 individuals from multiple states - Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and West Bengal in connection with a WhatsApp scam that defrauded a woman employee of Rs 5.1 crore. The accused impersonated the victims company Managing Director (MD) using a WhatsApp profile and tricked her into transferring funds under the pretext of an urgent business project. They also recovered Rs 2.48 lakhs from banks in West Bengal and Kerala. According to the complaint, the victim received a message from an unknown number bearing the MDs profile picture. Coronavirus cases have been rising in India after months of lull, with infections witnessing a five-fold jump and crossing the 1,000-mark in the end of May. The surge has continued since, with active cases nearing 3,000, with Kerala leading the latest spike, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi. Government data shows a rapid rise over just four days, from 1,010 cases on May 26 to 2,710 on May 30, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. As per the latest Health Ministry data, Kerala leads the Covid-19 surge with 1,147 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (424), Delhi (294), and Gujarat (223). Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have 148 cases each, while West Bengal has reported 116. Rajasthan (51), Uttar Pradesh (42), and Puducherry (35) follow, along with Haryana (20), Andhra Pradesh (16), and Madhya Pradesh (10). Smaller counts have been recorded in Goa (7), Odisha (5), Punjab (4), Jammu and Kashmir (4), Telangana (3), Arunachal Pradesh (3), and Chandigarh (1). Mizoram and Assam each have two active cases, while Uttarakhand has two as well. Notably, Sikkim has zero active cases, and no cases have been reported from Andaman and Nicobar or Himachal Pradesh. The data for Bihar remains unavailable. Seven deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll in the first five months of 2025 to 22. Maharashtra accounted for two of these fatalities, while Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu reported one death each. The rise in deaths comes amid a sharp increase in active cases across several states, underscoring growing concerns over the fresh wave of infections. Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Dr Rajiv Behl had earlier said that the severity of infections as of now is generally mild and there was no cause for worry. On the new Covid variants being traced, he said genome sequencing of samples in the west and south have shown that the new variants are not severe and are Omicron sub-variants. These are LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB. 1.8.1. The first three are more prevalent, Dr Behl said. Dr Behl also added that the ICMR's nationwide respiratory virus sentinel surveillance network is keeping a watch on emerging infections and pathogens. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet classified the LF.7 or NB.1.8 variants as Variants of Concern (VOCs) or Variants of Interest (VOIs). According to experts, while these variants may have some ability to bypass existing immunity, there is no indication that they cause severe or prolonged illness. Reported symptoms are mild and largely resemble those of the common flusuch as fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache, fatigue, and exhaustion. With cases on the rise, several states have directed hospitals to stay prepared with adequate beds, oxygen supplies, testing kits, and vaccines. Elderly individuals and those with co-morbidities have been advised to wear masks in crowded places as a precaution.
