CM Himanta says Assam has many bogus voters, backs SIR
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the voters lists in the states char (sandbar) and other riverine areas have the names of a lot of dead people. He told the media that many women also moved out after their marriage, yet the areas recorded a 100 per cent polling in the past. Batting for special intensive revision (SIR), Sarma said, When there is SIR and the names of voters are linked with their Aadhar numbers, the problems will disappear. He criticised Rahul Gandhi for opposing SIR, stating that the Congress leader was not clear about what he actually wanted. He can approach the Election Commission, ask it to rectify the voter lists and link Aadhar numbers with the names of voters to prevent people from voting at two places. But he is not interested in it, Sarma said. He asked how the Congress won in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana if the voters lists were erroneous. He said the Congress was earlier critical of electronic voting machines and now, it is using voters lists as a new ammunition. Meanwhile, Sarma clarified that the ongoing eviction drives in Assam was only against those Miya Muslims (Bengali Muslims) who had encroached upon land in forests, village grazing reserves, and professional grazing reserves. Our people do not encroach upon such lands, he said. He further stated that unlike tribals, non-tribals are not eligible for land deeds in such areas. They (Miya Muslims) have vast swathes of lands in Assams sandbars and other riverine areas where nobody else goes to live. In fact, half of Assams lands is with them in the riverine areas. But if they want to go to places like Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, where will the Assamese live? Sarma asked. Our aim is to protect the Assamese people, he further stated. We want answers, not attacks: Tharoor slams EC over poll panel's criticism of Rahul
NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor hit out at the Election Commission (EC) on Monday for attacking Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his poll-rigging claims, saying that instead of providing answers, the poll panel is insisting on formalities like an oath and an affidavit. Participating in a protest march taken out by opposition MPs against the revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar and alleged vote chori, Tharoor said what we want is answers, not attacks. The Election Commission was asked a number of very serious questions by Rahul Gandhi. Those serious questions deserve serious answers. The Election Commission, instead of providing answers, is insisting on formalities like an oath, he told PTI. I honestly do not think there is any reason for it.... They do not have to insist on it. Secondly, the data that Rahulji is citing is Election Commission data, the EC can look at its own data, the former Union minister said. Seems to me that instead of getting stuck on formalities, they should address the serious doubts that have been raised in people's mind because the integrity of the electoral system is credible, essential and vital for our own democracy. It is too precious for us to tamper with, Tharoor said. So my own view very seriously is that questions have been asked and answers must be given. That is what all this is all about, he added. Asked about the EC attacking Gandhi over his poll-rigging claims, Tharoor said, What we want is answers, not attacks. VIDEO | As protesting opposition MPs were stopped by police barricades at Transport Bhawan while marching towards the Election Commission headquarters, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said: The Election Commission was asked serious questions by Rahul Gandhi, and we deserve serious pic.twitter.com/zSfsykb5f5 Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) August 11, 2025 Later, in a post on X, the Congress leader said, At the INDIA bloc MPs' protest today. We are all asking why @ECISVEEP could not give serious answers to the serious questions raised by @RahulGandhi, rather than insisting on formalities like an oath and an affidavit (when the data cited is all the EC's own data anyway). It is very much in the interest of the Election Commission to dispel the doubts that have arisen in voters' minds about the integrity and the credibility of the electoral process. The flaws pointed out could easily be addressed and answers given that could set rest any fears of voting-list manipulation. The nation is truly entitled to a response, he said. EC officials have been insisting on a signed declaration by Gandhi to substantiate his claims Gandhi on Thursday cited data from the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to claim that more than one lakh votes were stolen through five types of manipulation in an Assembly segment in Karnataka.

Soybean At The Heart Of India-US Trade Logjam? Open Interest
The current India-US trade logjam was unfathomable a few months back. After all, India was one of the first countries to start trade negotiations with the United States after Donald Trump came back to White House for a second term. However, from the time the framework was established during US Vice President JD Vance's India visit in April to Trump imposing an additional 25% tariff on India for buying Russian crude, things seem to have slipped downhill. The India-US trade framework was aimed as a three-phase rollout. The first phase was goods trade, to be announced in July-August. The second phase was strategic trade to be announced around the QUAD Summit in India, around October-November, and third phase was more to do with digital and services. Currently, the first phase has fallen through. The main issue at hand is the import of genetically modified crops. A closer look shows that one particular crop, soybean is at the heart of this. India-US Trade: Quick Recap India was hoping for a 15% baseline tariff announcement but was shocked when US imposed 25% baseline tariff and subsequently slapped an additional 25% tariff on the pretext of New Delhi being a 'tariff king' and crude oil deals with Russia. India responded with a factcheck and showed that its tariffs are lower than or comparable to peers in the region. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi has said that India will not compromise on agriculture and dairy and will back its farmers even at the cost of personal relationship he enjoys with the US President. Ceasefire To Tariffs: How A Modi-Trump Call Post India-Pakistan Clash May Have Sparked A Rift Soybean Trade:US, China, Brazil & India A closer look at the agriculture trade issues between the US and India shows that the crux of the matter is the soybean crop, specifically genetically modified soybean. US is the second largest exporter of soybeans after Brazil. India, on the other hand, was a large importer. However, India's cumulative soybean imports from October 2024 to January 2025, fell sharply. US' soybean trade with China has also been hit. China, traditionally, had been one of the largest importers of the crop from the US but the recent tariff war between the two superpowers has hit US farmers, especially from Republican states, who were selling to Chinese markets. Take this into account US' export of soyabean in 2024 stood at $24.47 billion. Half of this went to China, which imported soybeans worth $12.64 billion. China has now started moving its soybean imports to Brazil, world's leading soybean exporter, and founding member of BRICS. Result? Trump has also levied a 50% tariff on Brazil. In 2024, Brazil exported $42.9 billion worth of soybeans, making it the second most exported product for the country. The main export destinations for these were China at $31.5 billion, according to data by The Observatory of Economic Complexity. This is even though soybean harvest in 2024 was lower as the crop was impacted. Brazil is expected to export around 105.5 million tonnes of soybeans in this season, putting pressure on the US farmers who could struggle to export their harvest. Where does India stand? India is the next largest market for US soybeans but is becoming less reliant. India imported $591 million in FY24, which fell to $89.15 million in FY25. Imports were largely from Brazil and Sudan. Domestically, the soybean season is from September to October. India's cumulative soyabean imports from October to January in the 2024-25 period dropped sharply to just 1,528 MT, compared to 117,357 MT during the same months in 2023-24. This was led by ample domestic production and supply, subdued domestic demand, and changes in trade policies and domestic pricing that have influenced import decisions. According to the second advance estimate for 2024-25, soybean production in India was projected at 151.32 lakh tonnes, marking an increase from 130.62 lakh tonnes in 202324. Maharashtra led the country in soybean production with an estimated output of 72.75 lakh tonnes. India ranks fourth globally for area under soybean cultivation with Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Telangana key states involved in soybean production all key farmer states. Deepinder Goyal's Recipe To Counter Trump Tariff Hike 'Become Unapologetic Superpower' India-US Agri Trade: Where Things Stand While India seems to have given some agri concession on import of apples and berries etc., coming mostly from Democratic states, it is reluctant to provide any concession on genetically modified soybean, corn and dairy products which come from MAGA-supported states in the US. India was willing to provide quota on dairy and a gradual scale-up but that did not hold water with Trump who wanted more. The issue: US soybean is genetically modified and will never be accepted in India and will not hold the legal test in the Supreme Court. India has had a long fight with GM seeds and that is the genesis for the current standoff. In other words, the soy, dairy lobby in the US is holding off the India-US trade deal. Currently, only GM cotton is permissible in India and higher yield has prompted research on food crops such as rice, brinjal, mustard and wheat. Mustard is still pending approval, and the heart of the GM seeds controversy stands at the sovereignty of the seeds and impact of the farming practices in India, which continues to be traditional in nature. The India-US trade deal is set for long drawn negotiation, and US will relent only if China and Russia play ball and that is where RIC: Russia India China trilateral comes into play. The trilateral has been inactive since 2012 and the Prime Ministers visit to China at the end of August and a trilateral meeting between the three leaders, Putin, Modi and Jinping, is closely watched and could pose a challenge for the US. No one has sought permission, says Delhi Police ahead of opposition protest march to EC office
NEW DELHI: Ahead of the opposition's march to the Election Commission over poll fraud, Delhi Police on Monday said no one has sought permission for holding the protest. Opposition INDIA bloc MPs led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and floor leaders of other parties will begin the march to the Election Commission (EC) from Parliament at 11.30 am. No one has sought permission for the protest march, a senior police official said. Security has been tightened in Delhi ahead of the protest march. Barricades have been erected at multiple points along the route and police personnel have been deployed to maintain order and prevent any untoward incident, the official said. Additional security vehicles and quick reaction teams have also been stationed in the vicinity of the EC office and surrounding roads to ensure smooth traffic flow. At a press conference last week, Gandhi made explosive claims of a huge criminal fraud in polls through collusion between the ruling BJP and the EC, as he cited an analysis in a constituency in Karnataka and said it was a crime against the Constitution. He claimed that over 1 lakh votes in the Mahadevapura assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake, duplicate, bulk voters, with invalid addresses and new voters added with misuse of Form 6. Insider track | Rahul Gandhis dinner menu
When Rahul Gandhi hosted a dinner for the INDIA bloc leaders this week, the menu wasnt the only thing sizzling. The evening saw warm camaraderie, especially between Gandhi and Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee. Their bonhomie didnt go unnoticed. From Farooq Abdullah to Kamal Haasan, a range of politicians were at the table. However, insiders claim the real winner was perhaps the food. A specially-curated spread from Lucknow left even the picky veterans reaching for seconds. The non-vegetarian menu featured a mouth-watering mix of chicken, mutton, and stir-fried tiger shrimp; the vegetarian offerings were no less lavish. The menu was fascinating, said one leader, awed by the gastronomic delight before him. The dessert rich, fragrant, and perfectly timed truly stole the show. Whether it was a carefully designed strategy or just good hospitality, the message was clear: politics might divide, but kebabs and conversation still have the power to unite. Behind the RG presser While many praised Rahul Gandhis recent press conference on the alleged voter fraud in Karnataka for its clarity and his confidence, his team is quietly patting itself on the back for the months of groundwork that made it happen. The subject voter theft in Mahadevapura Assembly constituency was no small matter. A dedicated team of 40 worked over six months, crunching data, analysing records, and apparently consuming ungodly amounts of coffee. The result? A presentation that was equal parts compelling and clickable, replete with fact-checked slides and graphics that had the social media humming. Rahul Gandhi was meticulous, too. He not only rehearsed his lines over and over, but he also suggested several changes in the content of the slides whether asking to tweak the fonts or reworking the sharpness of the messaging. Ultimately, the effort paid off, with even political sceptics conceding that the presser felt more like a studious case study than a campaign pitch. Chirags crossfire, the NDA shuffle It seems Chirag Paswan is back doing what he does best stirring the pot, gently or vigorously. The young LJP leader and Union Minister has taken public aim at Bihar CM Nitish Kumar over the states law and order record leaving the BJP in the unenviable position of babysitting a fraying alliance. Paswans comments came after high-profile crimes recently shook Bihar. He didnt mince words. I feel sorry to be supporting this government, he reportedly said, in what some in the JD(U) are calling a friendly fire incident. The BJP, which leads the NDA and would very much like everyone to play nice ahead of Bihars assembly polls, is now doing some behind-the-scenes firefighting. Weve asked him to tone it down. Hes young, passionate, but we do expect a little more alliance etiquette, said a BJP leader, a touch exasperated. Chirags father, the late Ram Vilas Paswan, was known for navigating coalition politics with grace and diplomacy. Whether Junior Paswan follows suit or chooses the rockier road remains to be seen. For now, NDA-watchers are keeping popcorn ready its going to be a bumpy show. Putin visit and Bihar polls If the buzz from BJP insiders is anything to go by, Russian President Vladimir Putins scheduled visit to India later this year might get an unprecedented welcome. Remember Namaste Trump? Well, itll be similar and with a maze of Russian flags. Planned to coincide (conveniently?) with the Bihar elections, the visit is being framed as a show of unbreakable friendship amid cooling ties with the US. The world may be bickering, but Bharats dosti with Russia is eternal, quipped one official, indicating how the geopolitical sands are shifting. Expect the usual optics: grand stages, warm hugs, glowing lights, and perhaps even a welcome track titled Mera Dost Ghar Aaya in a loop. While some foreign policy observers might raise an eyebrow, others are simply waiting to see whether this becomes a defining Modi-Putin moment or just a carefully choreographed pageant. As a veteran watcher noted: No matter how geopolitics plays out, both leaders know the power of optics. And this one is going to be a spectacle.
