CM Siddaramaiah, ministers busy touring districts ahead of Sadhana Samavesha
BENGALURU: Ahead of Sadhana Samavesha, the state governments celebration to mark two years in office to be held at Hospet in Vijayanagar district on May 20, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his ministers are busy touring the state. The ministers, all of them senior, have been given the task of identifying underprivileged people staying in tandas and hadis. On May 20, they will be given title deeds for their properties, along with identifying their settlements as revenue villages. The ministers and senior legislators have been given the specific task of interacting with the beneficiaries, officials and leaders at 64 Assembly constituencies, where a large number of people are staying in such settlements. These underprivileged people, who number around one lakh across the state, will be given property title deeds to mark the governments two-year anniversary. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has given the task of identifying and talking to the beneficiaries to senior ministers, including Satish Jarkiholi, Priyank Kharge, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Santosh Lad, Krishna Byre Gowda, NS Boseraju and others. Each minister has to cover one to two Assembly segments. They will hold meetings with officials and discuss giving title deeds to beneficiaries. The ministers have been told to complete the meetings by May 15. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other top party leaders are expected to take part in the Hospet event. While Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has been given the overall charge of the event, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has been given the responsibility of getting the beneficiaries from different parts of the state to Hospet. Congress sources said this is a government and not a party event. But it is a prestige issue for both the party and the government, they added. This is why senior ministers and leaders have been sent to different parts of the state. The deadline of May 15 to complete the process is to give enough time for the authorities to prepare the title deeds, the sources said.

BJP questions Congress leaders stance on ceasefire
BENGALURU: Senior BJP leaders in Karnataka hit out at IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge and other Congress leaders who have questioned the Centres decision on the ceasefire. Indian missiles seem to have hurt Congress leaders more than the Pakistanis, said BJP state president BY Vijayendra. Opposition leader in the Assembly, R Ashoka, asked has Pakistan outsourced its communication to the Congress party? Given the Congress historically soft stance on Pakistan, what exactly are they attempting to achieve by undermining our armed forces unequivocal victory? In their relentless campaign against PM Narendra Modi, Congress seems to disregard the unparalleled bravery and strategic brilliance displayed by our forces, Vijayendra stated on social media. Stating that Operation Sindoor was a resounding success, the BJP leader said the Indian Armed Forces struck deep into terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan, eliminating high-value targets. He said rather than demoralizing our armed forces with petty politics, Congress should rise above partisan agendas and applaud the unwavering courage of our soldiers and the decisive leadership of PM Narendra Modi. Ashoka asked if the Congress has outsourced its national communication to Priyank. Honble Kalaburagi district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge avare, people of Kalaburagi are asking why Kalaburagi is at the bottom of the table in SSLC/Class 10 board examination performance. Can you kindly extend your Gyan Darshan a little bit on the human development of Kalaburagi, before commenting on foreign policy and diplomacy? Ashoka stated. The BJP leader asked the minister not to be under the illusion that one day he can become the successor to Indira Gandhi. Pakistan is using video statements from Mallikarjun Kharge and Siddaramaiah in its press conferences to attack and humiliate India, trying to paint itself as innocent, the BJP leader questioned.
Karnataka govt to grant land titles, convert hamlets into revenue villages
VIJAYAPURA: The Karnataka government is taking decisive steps to provide land ownership rights to residents of undocumented settlements such as Tandas and Hattis, with a comprehensive plan to convert these land titles into revenue villages, said Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda. Addressing the media before chairing a review meeting at the DCs office here on Tuesday, Gowda said these hamlets are being occupied by many nomadic and semi-nomadic groups, and the government wishes to convert them into revenue villages by legalising them and giving title deeds to the residents. He announced that land title distribution, which was left incomplete during the previous BJP regime, will be completed this year. The Congress government has been making efforts for two years to find a solution for the residents. It will end uncertainty among them, as they will have clear ownership documents, the minister said. He said the previous government issued 72,000 land titles, but failed to cover all beneficiaries. We have already issued 36,000 titles under our jurisdiction and prepared titles for one lakh more families, he stated. Highlighting the ongoing digitisation drive, the minister said that 20 crore pages of land records have been computerised, and work is under way to digitise an additional 70 crore pages. This digitisation, he noted, will curb illegality and ensure that land records are easily accessible. Our aim is to make peoples records available at the fingertips, he added. Gowda also revealed that over 52 lakh cases of agricultural land are still in the names of deceased persons. Efforts are being made to update inheritance records and speed up overall development work in the state.

Political fever in Karnataka's Gangavathi hots up after Reddys disqualification
KOPPAL: Political permutations and combinations are on the rise in Koppal district, after the disqualification of Gangavathi MLA G Janardhana Reddy. BJP leaders are vying to field a strong candidate to secure the seat, buoyed by the response for the partys recent Janakrosh Yatra. The line of aspirants for a ticket for the impending election is only growing, with certain BJP sources suggesting that Reddys wife Aruna, is likely to contest. Congress has also set its eyes on the constituency, confident of the successes of its five guarantee schemes. Reddy was a minister in the first BJP government, when BS Yediyurappa was the CM. In 2023, he won as MLA from Gangavathi, from a party he floated -- Kalyana Rajya Pragati Paksha -- only to rejoin the BJP in March 2024. Now, the post of MLA for Gangavathi lies vacant, following the disqualification of Reddy, who was convicted by a special CBI court in an illegal mining case. Aruna is now a strong contender, though lacking major prior political experience. She also lost the latest Lok Sabha polls. Aruna has, however, handled many elections, alongside Reddy, former MP Karadi Sanganna, BJP leader Paranna Munavalli, and former MLC HR Srinath. At the same time, a member of the prominent Hitnal family is also emerging as a strong aspirant from the Congress camp. Sources said the Hitnal family has already sent across a message to the high command to consider one of their names, should Iqbal Ansari, who lost to Reddy in 2023, decides not to contest this time. It may be noted that two members of the Hitnal family are already an MP and MLA, in Koppal. At present, however, none of the leaders from both the parties wish to react to any speculation, while they await decisions from their respective top brass.

SC survey enumerators flood helpline with software snag complaints in Karnataka
BENGALURU: In what is turning out to be a rocky rollout for the much-anticipated Scheduled Caste survey, which started less than ten days ago, reports are pouring in of major technical glitches and a severe manpower crunch that have left citizens fuming and surveyors worrying. Sources revealed that the survey, which is crucial for understanding the socio-economic status of Scheduled Castes, has been plagued by server crashes and software slowdowns, leading to massive delays in data collection. Sluggish pace Residents from many places voiced frustration over the sluggish pace with many questioning the preparedness of the system. If this is how theyre conducting the survey that is so important, how can we trust the results, asked an exasperated respondent. Sources said that enumerators on the ground are helpless and are facing angry residents while grappling with faulty apps and overloaded servers. A senior officer from the Social Welfare Department said, There was a problem and there were many calls from surveyors. The calls went up to 200, with many complaining about software issues. The problem was bad three days ago, but now they say it has been solved. The problem was on a Friday evening and Saturday, when we received many complaints from enumerators and field staff. The number of complaints has come down drastically and today (Tuesday) it is bare minimum. While officials claim the situation is now under control, many remain sceptical about the surveys accuracy and credibility.

Sindoor tattoos a rage among Hampi youth
HOSAPETE: How to wear patriotism on your sleeve? Hampi and Hosapete seem to have an answer. In the wake of Indias awe-inspiring response, Operation Sindoor, hitting terrorist bases in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir as well as in the heartland of Pakistan, college students in these towns have set an example for the countrys youth to emulate--tattoo the iconic words Sindoor on their arms. The trend is not just limited to locals. Many foreign tourists, including Israelis, have applied Sindoor, on their arms, in an apparent tribute to the brave Indian soldiers who brought Pakistan to its knees in retribution to the dastardly Pahalgam terrorist attack late April. The tattoo shops in the towns are doing brisk business. The cost starts from Rs 600 and goes up to Rs 1,500 depending on the size of the etching. The colour of the etching depends on skin tone, said Ganesh N, one of the tattooists. Some of the youth said they will have Sindoor etched as temporary tattoos while others swear they will keep them for ever. This one is for India, and is forever Akash Nayak (17), sporting a Sindoor tattoo, said that Op Sindoor showed the Indian Armys fire power to the world. I wanted to join the Army, but could not get selected. Now its time to stand with the country. Two days ago, I decided to have a permanent tattoo--Sindoor, a beaming Nayak said. Ravi, another youth from Hampi, said, As an Indian, I am proud of the Army. When I got the word Sindoor tattooed, I had goosebumps all over me. This one is for India, and is forever. He added, My friend from Israel was so impressed with Sindoor when I explained to him the significance and cultural context of the word. He, too, then immediately made a run for the tattoo shop. Ganesh, the tattoo artist, said, In the last one week many youths came to my shop and demanded patriotic words or signs, especially the Sindoor word which is the most popular among all. Hold Parl session to discuss Op Sindoor: Kharge to PM Kalaburagi: AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded the prime minister to convene a special session of the Parliament immediately. Before proceeding to New Delhi, Kharge addressed the media at his residence here and said convening the special session is necessary to discuss several issues, including Operation Sindoor and Indias ceasefire with Pakistan. When asked about US President Donald Trumps claim that it was on his suggestion that both India and Pakistan agreed to declare a ceasefire, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said that the proper forum to discuss matters of such importance is either the Parliament or an all-party meeting. All parties in the Opposition camp have expressed their support for the steps taken by the Union Government, and the Centre should also reciprocate the same by taking them into confidence, he added.
IMD issues yellow alert across Karnataka till May 15
BENGALURU: Heavy rain and gusty winds battered Bengaluru through Tuesday afternoon and evening, leading to waterlogging, treefall and traffic congestion. The rain also tugged down the mercury, bringing relief to citizens reeling under the harsh summer heat. The city came under an intense spell of 34.2mm of rain. According to the India Meteorological Department, HAL Old Airport area recorded 41mm, and Bengaluru Urban recorded 33.5mm of rain. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and across Karnataka, including Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Udupi, Tumakuru, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Bidar and Uttara Kannada districts, till Thursday. It has forecast strong winds and thundershowers. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room was flooded with calls about waterlogging. The BBMP forest wing reported that following heavy rain, 36 trees were uprooted and 121 branches had fallen. Officials said a big tree crashed on to a four-wheeler in Yelachanahalli, but no casualties were reported. Officials and civic teams cleared the trees and branches and also removed silt from roadside drains to clear stagnant water and divert it into drains.
Urban areas in Karnataka may get more rain this monsoon
BENGALURU: At a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a 5% above normal rainfall this south-west monsoon across India, weather officials in Karnataka have cautioned more rain for south-interior Karnataka, especially in urban pockets like Bengaluru, owing to local weather convections. The monsoon is likely to hit the Kerala coast on May 27, five days earlier than its normal onset date of June 1. Director of IMD-Bengaluru N Puviarasan told The New Indian Express that the long-range forecast has been issued for the entire country based on global climatology factors. Excess rainfall has been predicted over south interior Karnataka. The local effects--increasing heat islands and urbanisation will also play a role in the amount of rainfall. Puviarasan further said that rising temperatures also play a crucial role in influencing rainfall. Last year, the maximum temperature recorded in Bengaluru was around 36 degrees Celsius in May. This year, it is hovering around 33 degrees Celsius. At the moment, pre-monsoon showers are very good in most parts of Karnataka, but not so much in Bengaluru. Other districts, including Belagavi, are experiencing very heavy rainfall. According to the data available, Karnataka received 86.4mm of rainfall in May 2023 as against the normal forecast of 73.7mm. In May 2024, the state received 118 mm. Further, Bengaluru recorded 181.5mm in May 2024 and 305.4mm in May 2023. According to weather expert Prof MB Rajegowda, the increased rainfall in the state should be well utilised by farmers and agrarian regions for increasing cultivation. Farmers can go for long-duration crop varieties, he suggested. Explaining the scenario in Bengaluru, Rajegowda said that increased heat layers will draw more clouds. Precipitation was 600 mm in the 1950s, and now it is 1,000 mm. Summer heat has intensified, and so has the rain, he elaborated. However, officials from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Authority said pre-monsoon showers have already started. Intense rainfall in urban areas coupled with flooding seems to have become the new normal now, an official said. The official added that models show that coastal and north interior Karnataka will also experience heavy rainfall.

Bangalore Development Authority promises to complete basic infrastructure in KG Layout
BENGALURU: Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) on Tuesday held a meeting with the allottees of new sites in Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout on providing basic infrastructure facilities. The meeting was held after the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) prodded the BDA. In the meeting, it was informed that the authority has already provided basic infrastructure in the layout, such as roads, electricity, underground drainage, drinking water, Sewage Treatment Plant, electric substation, parks, and other essential amenities. The allottees were told that about 90 per cent of the work in the layout has already been implemented and steps would be taken to complete the remaining 10 percent of the work. Regarding the acquisition of 550 acres of land scattered in various portions of the layout, landowners had filed petitions in the High Court. The court had given the BDA a three-month period to settle the matter. Accordingly, representations were received from the landowners. After reviewing them, the authority rejected the requests to drop from the layout plan, stating that the land is essential for the continuity of basic infrastructure and the planned development of the layout. The process of land acquisition in the layout is ongoing. Recognising the delays caused by the ongoing court case, the authority assured the site allottees that steps would be taken to expedite the completion of the work. In eight weeks, the land acquisition will be completed for the continuation of basic infrastructure services in those patch of lands, said N Jayaram, BDA Commissioner. The meeting witnessed commotion when one Suryakiran began raising irrelevant questions against the authority. On questioning an official authorisation letter to represent the allottees, he left the meeting along with all the allottees. Engineer Member, Deputy Commissioner (Land Acquisition), Engineering Officers, Executive Engineers, legal representatives, and senior officials of the Authority were also present in the meeting.
