KTMF delegation calls on CM Omar Abdullah, seeks immediate resolution of traders, artisans and workers issues.

Srinagar,July 3: A high level delegation of the Kashmir Traders & Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) led by its President Mohammad Yaseen Khan today called on the Honble Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Omar Abdullah and held an extensive meeting on several long-pending issues concerning traders, traditional artisans and workers across Kashmir. The delegation comprised of senior KTMF functionary Qazi Tauseef, Ghulam Hassan Parra President Ganderbal Traders Federation, Mehrajuddin Sheikh Vice President Ganderbal Traders Federation, Jan Mohammad Misgar Chairman Kashmir Copper Workers Trade Union, Arshid Ahmad Khan President Kashmir Copper Workers Trade Union. During the meeting the Ganderbal Traders Federation raised serious concerns regarding the proposed displacement of several shopkeepers due to ongoing and upcoming developmental works. They urged the Chief Minister to ensure that no trader is rendered livelihood less and called for a comprehensive rehabilitation package, including suitable relocation before any displacement is undertaken. Kashmir Copper Workers Trade Union, representing nearly 50,000 workers highlighted the alarming decline of Kashmirs centuries old copper craft. The Union strongly demanded an immediate ban on machine made copper products, stating that such products have severely impacted the livelihood of thousands of local craftsmen and artisans. It appealed to the Government to introduce effective measures for protecting genuine handmade copperware, preserving the traditional craft and ensuring sustainable employment for artisans associated with the sector. The delegation also discussed several other issues concerning the welfare of copper workers, including institutional support, market protection, promotion of indigenous craftsmanship and policy interventions aimed at reviving the traditional industry. Another major issue raised by the KTMF was the long pending rental disputes involving traders under the Housing & Urban Development Department. KTMF delegation requested the Chief Minister to direct the concerned authorities to resolve these matters on priority, as prolonged uncertainty has caused considerable financial hardship to the affected traders. Speaking after the meeting, Mohammad Yaseen Khan said, The trading community, traditional artisans and workers have been facing several genuine issues for years. We urged the Honble Chief Minister to address these matters on priority, particularly the rehabilitation of displaced traders, protection of Kashmirs traditional copper industry from machine-made products and resolution of pending rental issues. These concerns directly affect the livelihoods of thousands of families and deserve immediate government intervention. He added that KTMF remains committed to safeguarding the interests of the business community while working closely with the Government for the economic development of Jammu & Kashmir. The Honble Chief Minister gave a patient hearing to all the issues presented by the delegation and assured them that each matter would be examined sympathetically. He assured the delegation that the Government is committed to addressing the genuine concerns of traders, artisans and workers and that appropriate action would be taken for the early redressal of the issues.

Statehood not for sale at Jantar Mantar: Altaf Bukhari

Outsourcing jobs a grave injustice to unemployed youth Srinagar, July 2: Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the National Conference (NC)-led government, accusing it of failing to deliver on key promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections and terming its proposed sit-in at Jantar Mantar for statehood restoration a political gimmick. Addressing a workers convention at Kunzer in Tangmarg, Bukhari said the ruling party had misled people and failed to fulfil commitments including one lakh jobs, free electricity, LPG cylinders, regularisation of daily wagers, and enhancement of ration quota. Statehood is not something that can be achieved through protests in Delhi. This is only an attempt to divert attention from governance failures, he said, adding that public frustration was growing due to unfulfilled promises. He urged party workers to gear up for upcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies elections, saying people now recognise the gap between empty promises and genuine service. Bukhari also called for permitting local communities to continue traditional manual mining activities under regulated permits, and reiterated his demand for dialogue between the Centre and the people of Jammu and Kashmir to bridge the trust deficit. He also sought release of detainees and compensation for farmers affected by recent hailstorms and rains. Senior vice president Ghulam Hassan Mir accused the ruling party of centralising power and weakening democratic institutions, saying even elected representatives were being denied freedom to serve the public. He demanded immediate conduct of Panchayat and ULB elections. Provincial president Mohammad Ashraf Mir criticised outsourcing of government jobs and alleged that the existing reservation policy had created widespread resentment, saying the government had failed to address key youth concerns. The convention also saw several political and social activists joining the Apni Party.

Altaf Bukhari takes dig at NC, says govts proposed sit-in at Jantar Mantar a political gimmick

Srinagar, July 2: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir, and Provincial President Mohammad Ashraf Mir on Thursday strongly criticised the ruling National Conference (NC)-led government, accusing it of failing to deliver effective governance and honour the promises it made to the people during the 2024 Assembly elections. The leaders were addressing a workers' convention at Kunzer in Tangmarg. On the occasion, several political and social activists joined the Apni Party and were warmly welcomed by the party leadership. Addressing the gathering, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari termed the National Conference's proposed sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to demand the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood as nothing more than a political gimmick aimed at misleading the people. Statehood is not something that can be obtained by staging protests on the streets of Delhi or at Jantar Mantar. This proposed protest is merely gimmick and another attempt by the ruling party to divert public attention from its failures and mislead the people, he said. He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who had given the present government a massive mandate, are now deeply disappointed with its performance. The people feel deceived because the promises made during the 2024 election campaign have remained unfulfilled. The government has failed to deliver on its commitments, and public frustration continues to grow, he said. Questioning the government's performance, he asked, The ruling party had promised one lakh jobs soon after assuming office. More than 20 months have passedwhere are those jobs? What happened to the promise of providing 200 units of free electricity and free LPG cylinders to households? Have the daily wagers been regularised? Has the ration quota been enhanced as promised? The government made a long list of commitments before the elections, but none of them has been fulfilled. Apni Party president urged party workers to prepare for the forthcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections, saying the people have now recognised the difference between empty promises and genuine public service. The traditional political parties have repeatedly deceived people with false promises. It is now our responsibility to reach every household and strengthen the party at the grassroots, he said. Expressing concern over restrictions on local mining activities, Bukhari said the government should allow local people to continue manual mining in streams, as generations have depended on it for their livelihood. The government should issue permits to local residents, collect the prescribed royalty, and allow them to continue manual mining. Depriving local communities of their traditional source of livelihood is unjust, he said. He also reiterated his demand for dialogue between the Centre and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. I once again appeal to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister to initiate meaningful dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir so that their grievances and aspirations can be addressed through peaceful engagement, he said. Bukhari said, The Government of India must engage with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the youth, to bridge the trust deficit between the people of J&K and the Centre. He said that those who are demanding India-Pakistan talks should raise this demand at various forums and across the country, but not in Jammu and Kashmir, because such demands on the soil of Jammu and Kashmir are disturbing the people, especially the youth. Therefore, he said, it would be better to raise such demands elsewhere at Delhi, Mumbai and other places in the country rather than in Jammu and Kashmir. Bukhari also renewed his demand for the release of detainees and expressed concern over the government's failure to compensate farmers who suffered massive losses due to recent hailstorms and heavy rains. Addressing the convention, Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir accused the ruling party of undermining democratic institutions and concentrating power. They are governing Jammu and Kashmir in a manner that resembles the rule of the Maharajas. Power has become centralised, and democratic institutions are being weakened. Apni Party will continue its struggle against this 'Maharaja-style' governance and work to ensure that power truly rests with the people, he said. Criticising the functioning of the ruling party, Mir alleged that even its own legislators have been denied the freedom to serve the people effectively. The MLAs of the ruling party have virtually been reduced to slaves. They are not allowed to function independently or address the concerns of the people, he said. He said that while the ruling alliance had received a mandate to govern, the Apni Party had received a mandate to play the role of a responsible opposition. We know how to discharge the responsibilities of an effective opposition. We will continue to hold the government accountable for every promise it has failed to fulfil, he added. Mir also accused the government of delaying Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies elections, thereby depriving people of democratic representation at the grassroots. We strongly demand immediate elections to Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies so that democratic institutions are revived and people regain their right to choose their representatives, he said. He assured the gathering that the Apni Party would continue to represent the aspirations of the people and urged workers to further strengthen the organisation across Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the occasion, Provincial President Mohammad Ashraf Mir criticised the government's move of outsourcing jobs, describing it as a serious injustice to educated unemployed youth. Outsourcing recruitment and allowing backdoor appointments deprive deserving educated youth of fair employment opportunities. At a time when unemployment is one of the biggest challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir, such policies only deepen public despair, he said. He also criticised the government for failing to address concerns over the existing reservation policy. The present reservation policy has generated widespread resentment because it is unfair to a large section of society. Despite being in office for more than 20 months, the government has failed to resolve this important issue. People have every reason to question its commitment and competence, he said. On the occasion, several political and social activists joined the Apni Party in the presence of the senior leadership. Those who joined the party included former lecturer Mohammad Ashraf Mir, former Police Inspector Farooq Ahmad Paray, former TSO Abdul Ahad Sofi, former TSO Manzoor Ahmad Dar, former TSO Bashir Ahmad Malik, NC Wailoo Block Vice President Ghulam Mohiuddin Wani, NC worker Abul Rashid Qureshi, NC worker Mohammad Akbar Khan, Mateen Ahmad Baba, Mehraj Ahmad Bakhsh, and several others. Among those present at the convention, besides Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Ghulam Hassan Mir and Mohammad Ashraf Mir, were District President Baramulla Shabir Ahmad Shah, Provincial Secretary Kashmir Aftab Ahmad Beigh, Provincial Publicity Secretary Kashmir Aamir Rashid Wani, District Vice President Baramulla Syed Noor-ul-Aman, Social Media Analyst Tariq Mohiuddin, Block Presidents Abdul Kareem Dar (Kunzer), Kaka Ji Abdul Rehman Lone (Chandil), Nazir Ahmad (Wailoo), Mohammad Akbar, Abdul Ahad Wani, Constituency In-charge Tangmarg and former DDC Advocate Ishfaq Mir, former DDC Kunzer Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, Senior Leader Abdul Ahad Botany, party's Zonal President Abdul Majeed Khanday, Block President Nazir Ahmad, Block President Mohammad Akbar, Block President Abdul Rehman alias Kaka, and other party functionaries.

Sustained peace can be achieved through meaningful dialogue: Altaf Bukhari

Srinagar, July 1: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Wednesday said that lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir can only be achieved through meaningful dialogue between the Government of India and the people of the region. Stressing that peace is the cornerstone of progress, he said, Peace is utmost essential for the development and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Apni Party endorses calls for dialogue between India and Pakistan. He said that if such a dialogue ensures peace in Jammu and Kashmir, they would be the happiest people to support such a move. He said, Peace is paramount for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. If both the neighbouring countries talk to each other and that leads to peace in Jammu and Kashmir, we would be the happiest people. He further said, I have been consistently demanding that the Centre initiate a dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir because I understand that only dialogue can ensure the redressal of issues and grievances. I am happy that today even those who opposed dialogue earlier are supporting it. Dialogue is the only way to address issues. Taking a dig at the government over the outsourcing of jobs in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, It is no justification to say that the previous government did the same. Outsourcing jobs, whether by the present government or the previous one, is a cruel joke on unemployed youth who are grappling with unemployment. This practice is being carried out at the cost of unemployed youth. It must be abandoned immediately. Bukhari made these remarks today while talking to reporters after an event at the party headquarters in Srinagar. The event was organised to extend a warm welcome to several prominent political and social leaders and activists into the party fold. Those who joined the party included former SMC Srinagar Secretary Sofi Mohammad Akbar, former DDC Member and ex-Zone President of PDP Abdul Qayoom Mir, renowned businessman and Sarparast-e-Aala of the All J&K Wood Suppliers Union Gulzar Ahmad Pardesi, social and political activist Indumeet Singh, and others. They all joined the party along with their respective teams. On this occasion, partys president Altaf Bukhari and other senior party leaders extended a warm welcome to the new entrents. Speaking on the occasion, Bukhari said, I warmly welcome you all to Apni Party. I am sure that together we will be able to implement the party's pro-people agenda and policies more effectively. We are here to serve the people and work for peace, prosperity, and development. He went on to say, Apni Party firmly believes that many of the wounds suffered by the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been inflicted over the years and decades by successive governments in Delhi. At the same time, we also believe that the solutions to our challenges will come from Delhinot from Islamabad, London, or America. Our commitment is to engage constructively and democratically to secure the rights, dignity, and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking about the harsh propaganda carried out against Apni Party by its political opponents during the 2024 Assembly elections, Bukhari said, We could not secure victory in the 2024 Assembly elections, perhaps because our opponents resorted to character assassination, false accusations, and propaganda against us. However, today they stand completely exposed before the people. The public now fully understands that they were deceived by the traditional parties through false promises and emotional slogans during the 2024 election campaign. The truth has become evident, and those who misled the people now stand fully exposed, he added. Bukhari made a direct appeal to the Prime Minister, urging him to initiate a dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and address their long-pending issues. He said, I want to tell the Hon'ble Prime Minister that our people do not demand the moon and the stars. They seek only those same rights that the Constitution guarantees to every citizen of this nation. He further said, Our youth often feel unsafe when they are outside Jammu and Kashmir. Even today, many of them are called to police stations on occasions such as August 15 and January 26. Our youth deserve a sense of security and dignity at home and outside J&K as well. You had promised to engage in dialogue with the people. This is the time to fulfil that promise. What are you waiting for? If you are testing the patience of the people, let me say that their patience is wearing thin. They want the immediate resolution of their genuine issues and grievances. Their aspirations cannot be ignored any longer. He expressed grave concern that the elected government has shown no interest in increasing the existing 15-year residency requirement for obtaining domicile in Jammu and Kashmir, despite having the authority to recommend such a change. He urged the Central Government to take the initiative to extend the residency requirement for domicile eligibility to at least 35 years, if not 50 years. If such a provision could be made for Himachal Pradesh, why not for Jammu and Kashmir? he asked. Bukhari appealed to the administration to ensure that, while making all necessary arrangements for a safe, secure, and smooth Amarnath Yatra, equal attention is given to facilitating the local population. He urged the authorities to ensure that residents do not face unnecessary inconvenience or hardship as a consequence of the security measures put in place for the Yatra. Besides Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, the prominent party leaders who were present on the occasion included partys Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir, Chairman of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee Mohammad Dilawar Mir, Provincial President Kahsmir Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Chief Spokesperson & State Secretary Muntazir Mohiuddin, Media Advisor Farooq Andrabi, Secretary organisation & Spokesperson Dr Harbaksh Singh, District President Pulwama Dr Samiullah, Vice President Srinagar & Constituency In-charge Central Shaltang Zaffar Habib, Tajalah Andrabi, and others.

Gurez review flags delay in UT Capex works despite approvals Panel raises concern over low bidding, seeks timely completion, accountability Srinagar, June 30: The Committee on Estimates of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has expressed serious concern over the slow pace and lackadaisical approach in the execution of development projects by the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department across the Union Territory. Chairing a review meeting in Gurez, MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan (Gurezi) said several works sanctioned under the UT Capex Budget over the last two financial years have failed to progress with the required urgency, prompting concern from the Committee over delays in implementation. Legislators Ali Mohammad Dar, Javid Hassan Baig, Mushtaq Guroo, Irshad Rasool Kar, Sajad Shaheen, Sunil Bhardwaj besides Secretary JKLA Manoj Kumar Pandit, Secretary Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs Achal Sethi along with senior officers from Finance, PWD ( R&B) and PMGSY were present in the meeting. It further called upon the department to strengthen the monitoring and enforcement mechanisms so that all sanctioned works are completed efficiently, maintaining the desired standards of quality and within the stipulated timeframe. The facility holds regular awareness and capacity building programmes for teachers, students, healthcare workers, Self Help Groups, religious leaders, and community stakeholders in association with district administration of Srinagar and other relevant departments like JKRLM, Education department etc. While the challenge remains substantial, doctors say the campaign has undoubtedly increased public awareness, reduced stigma, and encouraged more individuals and families to seek timely treatment On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on June 26, former Head of the Department of Psychiatry, GMC Srinagar, Prof. Maqbool Dar, highlighted the growing global and regional burden of substance abuse. Stressing the importance of parental vigilance, he advised families to closely monitor their children's behaviour, maintain open communication, and seek professional help at the earliest signs of addiction. Prof. Dar emphasized that drug addiction is a treatable medical condition, and said that timely counselling and medical intervention can help individuals recover and reintegrate into society.
