Centre denies COVID-19 vaccine link to sudden deaths, attributes lifestyle, health conditions

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Wednesday denied any direct link between COVID-19 vaccination and reports of sudden deaths in the country, asserting instead that lifestyle and pre-existing health conditions were the key contributing factors. The governments clarification came a day after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleged that an increase in heart attack-related deaths in Hassan district could be due to the hasty approval and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to the public. Quoting extensive studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Union Health Ministry said the matter of sudden unexplained deaths has been thoroughly investigated by multiple agencies across India. These studies have conclusively established that there is no direct link between COVID-19 vaccination and the reports of sudden deaths in the country, the ministry said in a statement. Instead, the statement attributed such deaths to factors like lifestyle and pre-existing conditions. Studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) affirm that COVID-19 vaccines in India are safe and effective, with extremely rare instances of serious side effects. Sudden cardiac deaths can result from a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-COVID complications, the statement added. The ICMR and NCDC have collaborated to investigate the causes of sudden unexplained deaths, particularly among young adults aged between 18 and 45. To explore this, two complementary studies were undertaken using different research approaches, one based on retrospective data and another involving real-time investigation. The first study, conducted by ICMRs National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), titled Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India A multicentric matched casecontrol study , was carried out from May to August 2023 across 47 tertiary care hospitals in 19 states and Union Territories. It examined cases of individuals who had appeared healthy but died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023. The findings have conclusively shown that COVID-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death in young adults, the statement said. The second study, Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young, is currently being conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi, with funding and collaboration from the ICMR. This is a prospective study aimed at determining the common causes of sudden deaths in young adults. Early analysis of data from the AIIMS study indicates that heart attacks, or myocardial infarction (MI), continue to be the leading cause of sudden death in this age group. Importantly, no significant changes in the pattern of causes have been observed when compared with previous years, the ministry added. In the majority of the unexplained death cases, genetic mutations have been identified as a possible cause of these deaths. The final results will be shared once the study is complete, it said. Together, these two studies offer a more comprehensive understanding of sudden unexplained deaths in young adults in India. It has also been revealed that COVID-19 vaccination does not appear to increase the risk, whereas the role of underlying health issues, genetic predisposition and risky lifestyle choices does play a role in unexplained sudden deaths, the ministrys statement concluded. The ministry further emphasised that scientific experts have reiterated that statements linking COVID vaccination to sudden deaths are false and misleading and not supported by scientific consensus. Speculative claims without conclusive evidence risk undermining public confidence in vaccines, which have played a crucial role in saving millions of lives during the pandemic. Such unfounded reports and claims could strongly contribute to vaccine hesitancy in the country, thereby adversely impacting public health, the ministry said. It added, The government of India remains committed to evidence-based public health research to protect the well-being of its citizens. In the past month, at least 20 people in Karnatakas Hassan district have reportedly died of heart attacksmany of them without any prior symptoms or known pre-existing conditions. The Karnataka Chief Minister has set a 10-day deadline for an expert panel to examine and submit its findings. In a lengthy post, he said, ...Orders were given to this same committee back in February to conduct a thorough study on the reasons behind sudden deaths among young people in the state, and whether the COVID vaccines could have any adverse effects. In this regard, the process of examining and analysing heart patients is also underway. He further posted on X, It cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the COVID vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths, as several studies worldwide have recently indicated that COVID vaccines could be a cause for the increasing number of heart attacks.

Despite SC relief, distributor reluctant to release 'Thug Life' in Karnataka

A day after the Supreme Court ordered the release of Thug Life in Karnataka, the Karnataka distributor for Thug Life has said that he will not release the movie. The distributor Venkatesh Kamalakar has been quoted by the Indian Express as saying that the movie has not done well even in Tamil Nadu. He also said that for any movie to well when it comes to gross collection, the first two weeks are important. I will not release the movie, and I have many reasons. I bought the Karnataka distribution right, and today, if any movie has to earn money, it happens only within two weeks. It has been more than two weeks since the movie was released, and it has not done well even in Tamil Nadu, Venkatesh Kamalakar was quoted as saying by the Indian Express . Thug Life was released in all centres, except in Karnataka, on June 5, 2025 The release of the Kamal Hassan-starrer was stalled in Karnataka following outrage over the actor's remark that Kannada language originated from Tamil. The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the Karnataka government for the stalling of the movie in the state. While directing that the film be screened in the state the Supreme Court noted that mobs and vigilante groups cannot be allowed to take over the streets. A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan an Manmohan said the rule of law ought to be established and guns cannot be put to people's heads to stop them from watching the movie. The judges also clarified that Karnataka High Court had no business to seek 'apology or regret' from Kamal Haasan for his remark. The apex court gave Karnataka government one day's time to file a response by June 18.

'Cannot allow mobs, vigilantes to take over streets': SC slams Karnataka government over 'Thug Life' ban

The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the Karnataka government for issuing an extra-judicial ban on the screening of Tamil film Thug Life , starring veteran actor Kamal Hassan. A bench comprising Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Manmohan expressed concerns regarding the law and order situation in the state while directing the government to file its counter-affidavit by Wednesday. We can't allow mobs and vigilante groups to take over the streets. Rule of law must prevail. We can't allow this to happen. If somebody has made a statement, counter it with a statement. Somebody has made some writing, counter it with some writing, the court said. The Mani Ratnam directorial was banned in Karnataka after protests by pro-Kannada groups against a statement made by actor Kamal Hassan on the language. During the audio launch of the movie in Chennai, the actor-turned politician had remarked that Kannada was orn out of Tamil. The actor also refused to issue an apology, further irking the pro-Kannada groups and leading to the ban on the movie. Stressing that the state government has the responsibility to ensure the screening of any film which has a CBFC certificate, the court said, Rule of law demands that any film which has a CBFC certificate must be released and the State has to ensure its screening. It can't be at the fear of burning down the cinemas that the film can't be shown. People may not watch the film. That is a different matter. We are not passing any order that people must watch the film. But the film must be released, the court said.

J&K students association launches report seeking reservation policy revamp

The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has launched a detailed report urging the rationalisation of the reservation policy in the Union Territory. The report, prepared in collaboration with the J&K Centre for Peace, Research & Sustainable Development (JKCPRS), a Kashmir-based policy research institute, was released on Monday. The report was launched by JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami, Chairman Mushtaq Habeeb, and Advisor Danish Lone. A delegation from the association also submitted the report to the Chief Ministers Office and met with Nasir Sogami, Advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Sogami assured the delegation that the researched report will be read, reviewed, and taken into consideration for necessary policy action. Sogami described the report as a groundbreaking document that critically analyses the current system and points out its structural issues and social inequalities. He said the report offers practical recommendations for a fairer system. Among the 15 key recommendations are conducting a caste-based socio-economic census, dividing sub-groups within reserved categories, revising EWS category criteria, and restoring the 60:40 open merit-to-reserved category ratio. Khuehami said, This report is a roadmap. It traces the evolution of reservation trends in J&K, compares them with national and international benchmarks, and highlights glaring disparities that continue to marginalize large sections of society. There is an urgent need for reforms rooted in equity, social justice, and constitutional morality. The report was created by a 12-member expert committee chaired by JKSA President Ummar Jamal. The team included Faizaan Peer, Danish Lone, Farhat Riyaz, Osheeba Bashir, Adnan Malik, Nazia Israr, Dr. Adil Hussain, Sadiya Farooq Masoodi, Krishna Saproo, Azhar Hassan Mir, Muzamil Ahmad Reshi, and Aamir Akbar. The members came from diverse academic, legal, and policy backgrounds. Khuehami added, We are not against reservations. Our fight is against a flawed, disproportionate system that has failed to benefit the genuinely deserving and has sidelined meritorious candidates. We advocate for a balanced framework that ensures both upliftment and meritocracy. The association plans to connect with civil society groups, schools, and student communities to build wider support for reform. A follow-up white paper will be prepared based on feedback from students, teachers, community leaders, and policy experts. The feedback will be collected through in-person meetings, digital discussions, and written submissions. The association said, This must be a people-centric reform process. No voice should be left unheard. We are committed to reaching every section of society to build a unified call for a rational, transparent, and equitable reservation policy. They added that the goal is not just to challenge the systems flaws but to offer a better way forward. Social justice cannot be selective, the association noted. A progressive society must uplift the disadvantaged while also honouring merit. We urge the political leadership to rise above vote-bank politics and initiate an honest, inclusive, and transparent review of the existing reservation framework. The association also requested a temporary slowdown of recruitment processes in the Union Territory until the reservation issues are addressed. Were not calling for a complete halt, they clarified. But continuing recruitment under a flawed system risks grave injustice to open-merit candidates. A temporary pause will provide the necessary time to fix these deep-rooted issues and restore fairness.

Qatar emphasises zero-tolerance towards terrorism during Indian delegation's visit

DOHA : Qatar emphasised zero-tolerance towards terrorism during the all-party delegation's visit here that highlighted the need to stop differentiating the terrorists and their backers, the Indian mission in Doha said on Tuesday. The multi-party delegation led by MP Supriya Sule on Monday concluded its visit to Qatar -- the first leg of the four-nation tour planned following the Pahalgam terrorist attack , Operation Sindoor and the subsequent developments. The Qatar side emphasised its own zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and stressed that terrorism must be condemned. The delegation appreciated the condemnation of the Pahalgam attack by the Government of Qatar and thanked the Qatari leadership for its support, a statement by the Indian embassy here said. #WATCH | Doha, Qatar: Congress MP Manish Tewari, member of the all-party delegation led by NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, says, ... Since 1972, we have a clear template that if there is any outstanding issue between India and Pakistan, it has to be resolved bilaterally. There is no pic.twitter.com/qH36zT5tdy ANI (@ANI) May 26, 2025 It said the visiting delegation over the past two days met Mohamed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal bin Mohammed Al Thani, the Minister of State for Interior Affairs, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti and several other Qatari dignitaries. The Indian delegation conveyed India's zero-tolerance policy towards cross-border terrorism and briefed about developments since the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, the statement said. The delegation shared that Operation Sindoor, conducted by India in response, was calibrated, targeted and proportionate, demonstrating India's commitment to countering terrorism without escalating tensions. They emphasised the need to stop differentiating the terrorists and their backers and dismantling the cross-border terrorism infrastructure, developed and used against India for several decades, the statement said. The delegation members held a round-table discussion with the academic and think-tank community at the Middle East Council for Global Affairs and interacted with the media as well as the Indian community. Apart from Sule, the delegation members include MPs Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Vikramjeet Singh Sahney, Manish Tewari, Anurag Singh Thakur, and Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, former commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma, former minister of state external affairs V Muraleedharan, and Amb Syed Akbaruddin, former permanent representative of India to UN. Qatar in a statement on April 23 expressed strong condemnation of the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives. The Gulf nation is considered to wield influence in the West Asian region and has a role as a mediator in regional conflicts. The Sule-led group will on Tuesday travel to South Africa, which holds the current G-20 Presidency, and then head to Ethiopia, which is also the home to the African Union. The delegation will also visit Egypt, an influential country in the Arab world. The delegation is one of the seven multi-party delegations India has tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism and assert that the recent conflict was triggered by the Pahalgam terror strike and not Operation Sindoor as alleged by Islamabad. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.
