Bukhari seeks Health, Education reforms in remote areas
Srinagar, July 17: Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Friday called for comprehensive reforms in the health and education sectors, saying people living in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir continue to suffer due to inadequate infrastructure and shortage of qualified professionals. Addressing a workers' meeting at Surankote in Poonch during his outreach tour of the Pir Panjal region, Bukhari said doctors and teachers appointed in government service should be required to serve in remote areas for a fixed period to ensure quality healthcare and education reach underserved communities. There is an urgent need to reform the health and education sectors. Qualified doctors and teachers must serve in remote areas instead of leaving immediately after securing government jobs, he said, adding that long-term planning is needed to strengthen essential services in far-flung regions. Bukhari said feedback received during his tour highlighted the lack of basic infrastructure and public services in the Pir Panjal region. He also expressed concern over the non-construction of community and individual safety bunkers in border areas despite assurances by the Centre. The people living along the border remain vulnerable to cross-border shelling. The promised bunkers should be constructed without further delay, he said. Reiterating his party's stand, Bukhari said Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India but stressed that the constitutional rights of its people must be restored through constructive engagement with New Delhi. Referring to the developments of August 5, 2019, he termed them deeply painful and called for meaningful dialogue to bridge the trust deficit between the Centre and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He also stressed the need to rehabilitate youth who were misled into violence in the past and provide them with opportunities for a dignified future. Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir expressed concern over rising unemployment, saying educated youth were being deprived of opportunities despite being the region's greatest asset. He urged the government to create jobs and ensure young people are guided towards peace, development and prosperity. Provincial President Manjit Singh appealed to people to strengthen the Apni Party, saying it would continue to work for safeguarding the rights and interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Social Evils and Parental Control
DR ASIF HASSAN In recent years, our society has been engaged in loud debates about politics, economy, and geopolitics, yet some of the gravest dangers to our collective future are unfolding quietly within our homes, schools, and streets. Drug addiction, rising crime among youth, online obscenity, gambling, domestic violence, and a disturbing erosion of basic manners are no longer distant phenomena that we read about in reports; they are realities that many families confront every single day. While it is convenient to blame the government, the education system, or technology, we often refuse to look at the foundational institution that shapes every human being: the family. At the heart of the family stands parental control not as an authoritarian whip, but as a responsible, valuebased guidance that can either protect children from social evils or inadvertently push them towards them through neglect, overcontrol, or misplaced priorities. In Kashmiri society, the family traditionally played the role of a fortress. Children grew up under the watchful eyes of parents, grandparents, and the wider mohalla. Values were not delivered through lectures alone but were lived in daily practices how elders spoke to one another, how guests were treated, how neighbours were cared for in times of illness or grief. Today, this social fabric is fraying. Economic pressures, migration, and the explosion of digital media have reduced the time and emotional energy that parents devote to their children. In many homes, the television, smartphone, or tablet has quietly replaced the parent as the primary educator and entertainer. The result is a generation that is hyperconnected to the world yet increasingly disconnected from its roots, its responsibilities, and sometimes from its own family. Social evils do not emerge in a vacuum. When a young boy slips into substance abuse, when a teenager is caught in cybercrime, when a child begins to speak with shocking disrespect, these are not isolated incidents. They are symptoms of a deeper moral and emotional deficit that begins early. Parental control, when understood as firm yet loving involvement in a childs life, is the first line of defence against such outcomes. Control here does not mean policing every breath a child takes, but being present enough to know where the child is, who their friends are, what they are watching, and what they are silently struggling with. It means providing a sense of direction and boundaries, without suffocating their individuality. Unfortunately, many parents swing to extremes. On one side is total negligence disguised as modernity: Let the child decide, We do not want to be strict, Everyone is doing it, why should we be different? On the other side is suffocating authoritarianism: You will not question, You will obey without explanation, Honour the family name at all costs. Both extremes are harmful. Negligence leaves the child at the mercy of peers, trends, and algorithms that are indifferent to their wellbeing. Harsh control breeds rebellion, secrecy, and in the worst cases, double lives in which children present obedience at home while indulging in risky behaviour outside. Balanced parental control requires time, patience, and selfdiscipline from adults. It demands that parents become role models rather than just rulegivers. A father who lectures his son about avoiding drugs but returns home drunk, a mother who warns her daughter about social media yet spends hours gossiping and spreading rumours online, cannot hope to inspire respect or obedience. Children are far more influenced by what they see than by what they are told. If we desire a generation that is honest, compassionate, and morally grounded, we must embody those qualities ourselves. The digital world has added a complex layer to the challenge. Social evils have moved from the street corner to the palm of the hand. A child can be exposed to pornography, hate speech, violent content, and fraudulent schemes long before they set foot in a marketplace. The old style of parental control relying on physical proximity and community surveillance is no longer sufficient. Parents must now educate themselves about the online spaces their children inhabit. It is not enough to buy a smartphone because everyone has one and then turn a blind eye. Setting screentime limits, using parental controls, keeping devices out of bedrooms at night, and most importantly, having open conversations about what children see online, are no longer optional they are essential. At the same time, schools and religious institutions cannot wash their hands of responsibility. Teachers often observe early signs of behavioural changes: falling grades, sudden aggression, withdrawal, or inappropriate language. Instead of treating these as mere disciplinary issues, schools must work with parents to understand what lies beneath. Sermons in mosques and religious gatherings, too, should move beyond abstract moralising and address the concrete realities of drugs, domestic violence, and digital addiction that families are facing. Yet, in all of this, parents remain central; no institution can compensate for an absent or indifferent home. There is also a need to recognise the immense stress under which many parents live today. Economic insecurity, unemployment, political instability, and social pressures weigh heavily on adults, often leaving them emotionally drained. In such an environment, childrens questions can feel like an added burden rather than an opportunity for guidance. This is precisely why communitybased counselling, parenting workshops, and support networks are vital. Parenting is a skill that must be learned and refined, not an instinct we are automatically born with. Admitting that we need help does not diminish our authority; it strengthens our ability to guide. Ultimately, addressing social evils is not merely about punishing offenders or banning substances. It is about building strong humans, and that construction begins at home. When a child grows up feeling heard, respected, and guided with firmness and love, their chances of falling prey to destructive temptations diminish significantly. When, instead, the home becomes a place of shouting, comparison, or cold silence, the child will seek comfort and belonging elsewhere often in spaces where social evils flourish. The question before us, therefore, is not whether we want to control our children, but how we choose to do so. Will parental control be a rigid cage that breaks their spirit, or a protective boundary that allows them to grow safely and confidently? Will we continue to outsource our responsibilities to screens, schools, and sermons, or will we reclaim our rightful place as the first teachers and moral anchors of our children? If we truly wish to see a society free of drugs, violence, and moral decay, we must start not with slogans, but with sincere introspection within our homes. The transformation of society begins in the living room, at the dinner table, in the quiet conversations before sleep. Social evils thrive in the absence of meaningful parental presence. Restoring that presence wise, compassionate, and firm may be our most powerful weapon in reclaiming the future. (The Author is an educationist, public speaker, and columnist)
NC protest meant to strengthen Govt, not people: Bukhari
Srinagar, July 16: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Thursday termed the National Conference's proposed sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar over the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood as a political drama, asserting that statehood can only be achieved through dialogue with the Centre and not through confrontation. Addressing a workers' meeting at Dak Bungalow in Poonch, Bukhari said the NC failed to raise the issue of statehood when it came to power in 2024 despite securing a strong public mandate. If the NC was serious about restoring statehood, it should have pursued the issue immediately after forming the government. It is raising the demand now only to strengthen its own political position, he said. Reiterating the Apni Party's stand, Bukhari described restoration of statehood as a matter of honour and dignity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir but said it must be pursued through sustained engagement with the Central government. Dialogue and political engagement, not protests and confrontation, are the way forward to restore statehood and resolve other issues, he said. During his address, Bukhari also expressed concern over the lack of development in the Pir Panjal region and demanded the creation of a special police battalion by recruiting local youth from border districts. He also sought the construction of a tunnel across the Pir Panjal, connecting Uri and Poonch, to provide all-weather connectivity and boost economic activity. The Apni Party president accused successive traditional political parties of failing to address the people's concerns and criticised the government for delaying Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections, alleging that it was preventing decentralisation of power. Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir also addressed the gathering and called for the restoration of the historic Poonch-Uri and Poonch-Tangmarg road links to improve connectivity and revive the region's historical importance. Provincial President Jammu Manjit Singh highlighted the party's role in securing protections for land and government jobs for the people of Jammu and Kashmir after the 2019 constitutional changes.

Statehood can be achieved through talks, not confrontation: Bukhari
Srinagar, July 15: Describing the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood as a matter of dignity and honour for its people, Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Wednesday said the demand should be pursued through dialogue with the Centre rather than confrontation. Addressing a workers' meeting at Dak Bungalow in Mendhar, Poonch, Bukhari said statehood was imperative but could only be achieved through constructive engagement with the Government of India. His remarks came in the backdrop of the ruling National Conference's proposed July 20 sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Statehood is imperative. In fact, it is a matter of dignity and honour for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. However, this can be achieved only through dialogue with the Government of India, not through confrontation, Bukhari said. He, however, maintained that restoring statehood alone would not address the everyday challenges faced by the people, saying employment generation, poverty alleviation and improved public services required equal attention. Bukhari accused successive governments of failing to provide effective governance, alleging that many areas still lacked basic amenities such as roads, drinking water and electricity. He also criticised the ruling National Conference for what he termed unfulfilled promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections, particularly on employment. The Apni Party chief also blamed the Centre for ignoring the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and reiterated his concern over the developments of August 5, 2019, saying the people were deprived of their identity and statehood. Addressing the meeting, Apni Party senior vice president Ghulam Hassan Mir said the party was formed during a difficult period following the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, when people were facing uncertainty over land and job rights. Mir claimed the party leadership engaged with the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to ensure that the exclusive rights of J&K residents over land and government jobs were protected. The meeting was also addressed by the party's Jammu Provincial President Manjit Singh, who urged workers to intensify grassroots outreach and strengthen the party's organisational base.

Stop falling prey to NCs exploitive politics: Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari
Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir, who are currently on an outreach tour of the Pir Panjal region, lashed out at the ruling National Conference, accusing it of failures and deception. They were addressing a workers' convention at the Conference Hall in Dak Bungalow, Rajouri, on Tuesday. Party's Provincial President, Jammu, Manjit Singh, District President Rajouri Syed Manzoor Bukhari, and several other senior leaders also addressed the gathering. This event was organised by Syed Manzoor Bukhari. In his speech, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, as per a party statement, took a swipe at the ruling National Conference, alleging that instead of fulfilling its primary responsibility of ensuring effective governance and accelerating the development of Jammu and Kashmir, the government has been misleading people with false promises and emotional slogans. He urged people to stop repeatedly falling prey to what he described as the ruling party's tactics and to tell it that enough is enough. Developmental work has come to a standstill. In several areas, people still do not have access to potable drinking water. Many schools lack even basic toilet facilities. Yet, this government appears least concerned about these issues. Instead, it remains focused on keeping people occupied with emotional slogans to divert attention from its failures, he said. Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also appealed to the people to remain united despite the attempts by parties like the BJP and the NC to divide them. He said, During the elections, the BJP polarised Hindu voters in Jammu, and eventually Muslims got united in favour of the NC. The fact is that we never had such issues here before. The diversity of religions and communities is what makes us unique and defines the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We ought to preserve communal harmony at all costs, despite the provocations by political forces, who divide people for political dividends. He said that following the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A in August 2019, everyone was apprehensive that Jammu and Kashmir would lose its demographic identity. Leaders of the Apni Party went to Delhi to meet senior government leaders, including the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, and convinced them to continue the exclusive rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir over land and government jobs. It took us more than three months to convince the Centre on this issue. We also ensured the release of around 3,200 prisoners during that period. These were among the Apni Party's key contributions soon after the party was established, he added. Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari reiterated his demand that New Delhi must engage in a dialogue with the people, especially the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, in order to address their issues and grievances. He expressed his concern over the issues that people in various areas across Pir Panjal areas are facing and said, Speaking on the occasion, Ghulam Hassan Mir took a dig at the National Conference, accusing it of lying to the people for its political gains. Mir said that Jammu and Kashmir is in desperate need of initiatives aimed at ensuring comprehensive development and the prosperity of its people. He said, We need serious initiatives for comprehensive and well-planned development in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the fact is that as long as the National Conference remains in power, meaningful development will remain a dream. NCs track record shows that whenever this party has been in power, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a development deficit. Expressing his concern over the issues that Jammu Kashmirs youth are facing, Ghulam Hassan Mir said, Unfortunately, for a long time, misleading policies and false narratives have driven our youth on a path that led them either to the graveyards or to jails. A large number of young people have become victims of violence and guns over the years. Addressing the gathering, Manjit Singh urged party workers and people to strengthen the Apni Party so that it can implement its pro-people agenda and policies. He urged party workers to intensify their political and public outreach activities to remain connected with the people and make people aware of the pro-people agenda and policies of the party. Speaking on the occasion, the party's District President, Syed Manzoor Bukhari, said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are fed up with the gimmickry and deceptive politics of the traditional parties and their leaders. He said that people now fully understand that they were once again misled by these parties through false promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections. He urged the party workers to prepare for the upcoming Panchayat and ULB polls in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Ghulam Hassan Mir and Manjit Singh the prominent party leaders and senior workers who were present on the occasion included Coordinator Pir Panjal Arun Sharma, ST Sate President Saleem Chowdhury, District President Rajouri Syed Manzoor Bukhari, State President SC Wing Bodraj Baghat, State President Kissan Wing Badrinath Sharma, District President Rural Rajouri Vickey Sudan, District Vice President Rajouri Shabir Chowdhury, Youth President Rajouri Irfan Anjum, Provincial Secretary Youth Riyaz Ahmad and others.

Another major issue raised by the KTMF was the long pending rental disputes involving traders under the Housing & Urban Development Department. KTMF delegation requested the Chief Minister to direct the concerned authorities to resolve these matters on priority, as prolonged uncertainty has caused considerable financial hardship to the affected traders. Speaking after the meeting, Mohammad Yaseen Khan said, The trading community, traditional artisans and workers have been facing several genuine issues for years. We urged the Honble Chief Minister to address these matters on priority, particularly the rehabilitation of displaced traders, protection of Kashmirs traditional copper industry from machine-made products and resolution of pending rental issues.
