DGCA faults Indigos pilot training, slaps Rs 20 lakh fine
NEW DELHI: Indigo has been fined a penalty of Rs 20 lakh by the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), recently for faulty training of pilots in specific categories of high risk airports. The airline plans to legally challenge the order. In a disclosure filed in the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday as mandated by SEBI regulations, Indigos parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, has reported that the DGCA had levied Rs 20 lakh penalty on it on September 26. Specifying the violation by the airline which resulted in the penalty, the airline attributes it to its alleged failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes. Category C or high-risk airports refer to aerodromes with challenging approaches or complicated terrain and only pilots who have undergone specialised training can operate flights in them. The disclosure further states, The company is in the process of contesting the order before the appropriate appellate authority. Over 1,700 pilots in Indigo are provided this critical airfield training as revealed through an earlier order the airline had received from the regulator. Elaborating on what qualified simulators refer to, Captain Anil S Rao, president of the All India Pilots Association, told this reporter, All simulators used in aviation need to have a whole topographical view (realistic, actual view) of the airport and its surroundings t. A generic airfield will not have a topographic view. For instance, Calicut and Mangaluru airports have a 300-feet high table top and require what is known as a qualified simulator. Similarly, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl and Shimla are among the category C airports. Kabul and Kathmandu in the vicinity too are classified under it. On August 11, DGCA had issued a show cause notice to Indigo in connection with lapses in simulator training. Earlier, Air India Express too had received a similar notice in connection with the Calicut International Airport.

Tunnel road project a threat to Lalbagh Rock, surroundings
BENGALURU: The state governments ambitious Rs 17,698-crore tunnel road project for Bengaluru will shrink the size of Karnatakas oldest lung space, Lalbagh, and the underground drilling will impact the famed Lalbagh Rock, part of the 3.2-3.5 billion-year-old Dharwar Craton, among the oldest rock structures in the world that extends from Kolar to Mangaluru and up to Ballari in the north. The projects 16.7-km north-south corridor connecting Esteem Mall Junction in Hebbal to Silk Board KSRP Junction will have multiple entry and exit points at Mehkri Circle, Chalukya Circle, Lalbagh and Silk Board. Its Detailed Project Report (DPR) shows that Lalbagh bedrock falls under the tunnel roads transition zone. The alignment is set to cross a prominent lineament with Lalbagh lake in the vicinity. The DPR said one intermediate ramp will exit on Marigowda Road at Wilson Garden and the other on Siddapura Road. Around six acres of Lalbagh land will be lost for the 1.1-km stretch between Ashoka Pillar and Marigowda Junction. The DPR also stated that the creation of vents for the tunnel road passes through Lalbagh, and will also need land. The impact of the project is feared because it is planned to snake below and through the botanical garden, and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has declared Lalbagh Rock as a heritage site, as it is a visible part of the Dharwar Craton. Cratons are ancient, thick, rigid, stable and undeformed portions of the continental lithosphere, forming the core of continents. Lalbagh Rock is valuable as it is the Dharwar Craton jutting out of a layer of subsequent and younger sedimentary rocks that form the surface. These ancient crystalline basement rocks have deep roots reaching down into the Earths mantle, and provide stability and seismic safety. Dharwar Craton provides that stability to the Deccan Plateau, on which Bengaluru is located. Geologists said although Lalbagh Rock is extremely hard, cracks or fractures under it, where tunnelling is proposed, can inflict major damage. Noted environmentalist Dr AN Yellappa Reddy said a rupture in Lalbagh Rock can lead to water from Lalbagh Lake entering the Nimhans complex. Tall buildings along the alignment with deep foundations will also be impacted. He said the government should consult the National Institute of Rock Mechanics before proceeding with the project. A senior GSI official also pointed out that a thorough geotechnical investigation of the rock is needed on fault lines, weathering, cracks and joints. KV Krishnamurthy, secretary, Geological Society of India, said since the rock is declared a protected site, tunnelling will require permission. But a senior horticulture department official said: So far, no permission has been given for construction and land acquisition. Lalbagh (botanical garden) was created in 1760 and has over 2,200 species of plants belonging to around 680 genera and 150 species. The impact on the aquifers, which is the lifeline of varied species, including 250-year-old mango trees, is yet to be known. A senior GSI official said although protection of the rock and its surroundings is managed by the horticulture department, permission from the GSI head office is also required fo any work around or under the rock. This is why the Metro is far from the rock site. So far, no proposal has come (for the tunnel road project).

Demand up, but track congestion derails new Vande Bharat hopes in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vande Bharat trains continue to be among the most preferred services for rail passengers in Kerala, with occupancy levels consistently crossing 160% on routes such as Mangaluru Central-Thiruvananthapuram, Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod, and Nagercoil-Chennai Egmore. Despite the strong patronage, sources said the railway ministry has not granted additional services to Kerala, citing severe track congestion. Introducing new high-speed trains would force the Railways to halt several passenger services for longer durations to clear a corridor for Vande Bharat operations. Earlier this month, on September 9, the Railways expanded the coach composition of both the Mangaluru Central-Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod-Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharats from 16 to 20. The seating capacity of a 20-seater Vande Bharat service is 1,440 passengers. Yet, according to senior railway officials, the average footfall on these trains under Thiruvananthapuram division remains far higher -- between 2,300 and 2,500 passengers per trip -- clearly reflecting the overwhelming demand. Although the Nagercoil-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat does not run through Kerala, it falls under the Thiruvananthapuram division, and many passengers from the state capital rely on this service to reach Chennai. There is no doubt that Vande Bharat services enjoy tremendous patronage in Kerala, a senior railway official said. But if we introduce an additional Vande Bharat, we will be compelled to halt many passenger trains at various stations to clear the way for the high-speed train with limited stops. That would affect thousands of daily commuters and balancing these competing demands is not an easy task. Sources in the railway ministry admitted the issue has become a major puzzle for policymakers. While demand is particularly strong for a direct Vande Bharat service to Bengaluru, officials said running one along the congested Kerala-Bengaluru corridor is extremely difficult. We cannot estimate how many passenger trains would be affected if a Vande Bharat is introduced from Ernakulam or any other Kerala station to Bengaluru. Such a move could trigger criticism, as it will affect many other passenger trains. The Railways has to consider the interests of all sections of passengers, not just premium travellers, a senior ministry official said. Infrastructure expert E Sreedharan, popularly known as Metro Man, echoed the assessment. He noted that under the current circumstances, the introduction of more Vande Bharats in Kerala is not feasible. If new services are introduced, they will either be forced to run at reduced speeds or disrupt passenger train schedules. The practical solution is to keep increasing coach capacity, as the Railways has already done. In the longer run, creating a dedicated high-speed corridor will be the only way to run more such trains without disruption, Sreedharan said. Regular commuters also urged the Railways to focus on expanding capacity in the short term. There is no point in running Vande Bharats at low speed, said Rajesh Kumar, a frequent traveller. If new trains cannot be introduced immediately, at least add more coaches to existing services and consider a special project for Kerala to accommodate more high-speed trains. For now, Keralas Vande Bharat puzzle remains unsolved: demand soaring, but the tracks too crowded to make room for more services.

Air India Express flight delayed by three hours at Saudi Arabia due to braking sensor failure
NEW DELHI : The four-hour journey of an Air India Express flight from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru was delayed by three hours due to a braking sensor failure in the aircraft, said flyers on board. A total of 186 passengers were forced to cool their heels in their seats till the issue was rectified. Flight IX 886, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, was to depart from King Fahd International Airport to Mangaluru International Airport at 9.35 pm (Saudi Arabia time) on Friday. It finally left by 12.45 am on Saturday and reached its destination at 7.15 am, instead of its scheduled arrival time of 4.25 am. Aircraft braking sensors facilitate safe landing of aircraft. They prevent overheating of wheels and avert wheels lock-up using using anti-skid systems. Flyer Syed Mohammed Shakeel, who works in a private firm in Riyadh told this reporter, I had travelled from Riyadh to Dammam to board this flight to my hometown Mangaluru. Initially, the delay was said to be 20 minutes before we boarded. But later, the Flight Captain announced there was a technical issue and it was being sorted out. Aircraft engineers came on board and entered the cockpit. By 12.15 am, the Captain again made an announcement saying the aircraft had a braking sensor issue and it had been rectified. The aircraft took off sometime after that, he said. Passengers were put to much inconvenience, particularly those with children, he added. Shakeel added that this was the second time he was experiencing delays on the same Air India Express flight was having a fault. The previous time in March 26, the flight was delayed by 26 hours and we had to stay at hotel. Atleast it is not so bad this time, he said. Nihal Abdul Kadir, a finance and accounts professional, said, I was travelling with my wife and daughter. We were really worried over repeated delays in take-off by the flight. Some sensor issue was specified. The Ahmedabad Air India crash incident is still in our minds and so we were quite anxious. There was no proper information conveyed to the passengers too which was very frustrating, he charged. Many were hungry too as we were supposed to get our dinner after boarding. Only water was served and that too if we requested them. We finally got our food after the flight took off, Kadir added. P.A Hameed Padubidri, a pro-bono lawyer who assists Indians based in the Gulf, said, This is not the first time passengers face this kind of issue, which is recurring phenomenon with Air India Express. He detailed multiple instances when passengers suffered on the airline's flights from Gulf countries to India. In this specific instance, there was no clarity on when the aircraft would actually depart, leaving passengers anxious, he said. Passengers deserve timely information. Being held inside an aircraft for hours without updates or proper care raises serious concerns about transparency, passenger rights, and basic human dignity, he added. Air India Express has the maximum reach across the Gulf nations with its services connecting even smaller cities to India which makes flyers opt for it. Despite reaching out to multiple airline representatives since morning, Air India Express did not respond.

AAI & ICAO sign project to review height restrictions The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) have signed a significant Project Document to review Indias national regulations on height restrictions around aerodromes, marking a key step in strengthening the countrys aviation safety framework. NHAI revises guidelines for signboards on highways The NHAI has updated its signboard guidelines, making roadside boards more informative and user-friendly. These boards will display details of at least 20 essential services and include QR codes for digital access to the most up-to-date information.

Auto driver dies by consuming acid after his vehicle carrying school students involved in accident
KASARGOD: A 40-year-old autorickshaw driver died by suicide after his vehicle, carrying school students, was involved in an accident in which the students suffered serious injuries. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver, distressed over the students condition, panicked and took the extreme step. The deceased, K Aneesh of Pallanchi, was ferrying three Class IX students from Bethurpara Government Higher Secondary School on Tuesday evening when a speeding car hit his vehicle from behind near the school. While Aneesh suffered minor injuries, the students were seriously injured and rushed to E K Nayanar Memorial Cooperative Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Locals said that, overcome by panic, Aneesh consumed acid kept in his autorickshaw. He was rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru but died around 12.30 am on Wednesday. The body was handed over to family after postmortem examination. The Bedakam police are investigating the reasons behind Aneeshs extreme step and how he had an acid bottle in his vehicle.
