Karnataka: Activist calls for probe into Naxal leader's encounter
Mangaluru: The recent encounter killing of Naxal leader Vikram Gowda by the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) in Karnataka has sparked a demand for a proper probe into the incident. Activist Shekhar Laila has called for an immediate judicial inquiry by the state government into the incident. Over the past 21 years, multiple Naxal encounters have taken place in Karnataka, starting with the one in Edu village of Karkala taluk. However, unlike previous encounters, the Vikram Gowda incident stands out for the peculiar evacuation of local residents two days prior to the operation. This unusual sequence of events has led to widespread skepticism about the encounters authenticity, he said. Shekhar Laila highlighted several anomalies surrounding the incident. The ANF barred media personnel from accessing the site and prevented even a glimpse of the body. The police's claim that the encounter occurred inside a house has also raised eyebrows. Additionally, no policeman has been injured in the supposed exchange of fire, he said. The question arisesif the Naxals opened fire, whom did their bullets hit? Why were central armed forces called in prior to the encounter? Has the state's Anti-Naxal Force become so incompetent? Was this operation carried out by the ANF or central armed forces? he asked.

'Green Buildings' key to sustainable development: Minister Khandre
BENGALURU: Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister Eshwar B Khandre on Thursday said the government has been able to achieve some key objectives to inculcate best practices for environment conservation, protection and combating climate change. But some are yet to be achieved. The government is working on the issue of environment degradation in urban areas, but we havent had a breakthrough yet. Although we have been looking at various options, most of them are not helping enough. One among them is the green building concept we are looking at seriously. We are trying to understand and evaluate how well it can be integrated into our system and can help reverse the trend and achieve sustainable development, Khandre said. He was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day Green Building Congress 2024, an international conference being held in the city, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Khandre said Karnataka should work on three major concepts to achieve success -- change in policy and rules, training for stakeholders and implementation and monitoring of concepts to make an impact on the ground. Of the 12.8 billion sqft of green building footprint in India, Karnatakas contribution is 1 billion sqft and it is one of the top three contributing states, having 1,100 green building projects. Bengaluru has over 70 per cent of Karnatakas green building space, followed by Mangaluru. While it is low, a lot more needs to be done, like setting high targets and goals, as the construction industry is growing rapidly, said B Thiagarajan, national chairman, IGBC. He said that like other states, Karnataka should give 5-10 per cent incentive to buildings certified by IGBC, besides a subsidy in registration and floor area ratio. It should consider raising the cap for installation of solar rooftop panels for better sustainability. City students win awards Two Bengaluru students, Varna Vichithran and Priyatham Uppalapati, of BMS College of Architecture, won the IGBC Green Design Competition 2024, on the theme Identifying Urban Voids. Priyatham had won the award for finding a solution on how to use abandoned water tanks by redesigning them and using them in street vending areas and community co-working and skill development centres. Varna won for the plan she created on remodelling of conservancy lanes in Malleswaram, demonstrating how they are used as childrens play areas, pet parks, walking or jogging parks, reading nooks and even plant nurseries.

Currently, Varchas operates through approximately 200 retail outlets in India, covering Karnataka, Goa, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Telangana. These include hotels, liquor stores, bars, restaurants, duty-free outlets, and premium high-grade retail locations, Shankar told TNIE . We envision expanding to at least 500 touchpoints, targeting Haryana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, among other states. In Karnataka, Varchas products are already available in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kodagu, and Mangaluru. Launched in Troy, Michigan, in 2020, Varchas introduced a unique range of spirits to the American market, particularly in the bourbon and rye whiskey categories. The Varchas Straight Bourbon lineup includes 90 Proof, Sherry and Port Cask Finish, Single Barrel, and Reserve 102 options. Additionally, the Varchas Straight Rye range includes 90 Proof, Cask Strength, and Single Barrel variants. The company has since added 900 Grados Tequila, Dasara Gin, and Varchas Vodka to its portfolio. Bourbon and rye whiskey differ primarily in the type of grain used in their mash bills, resulting in distinct flavour profiles. While bourbon, made with at least 51 per cent corn, has a sweeter taste with hints of vanilla, oak, and caramel, rye uses at least 51 per cent rye grain, producing a spicier and drier flavour, often with notes of black pepper or clove. Considered the first successful American craft whiskey brand to enter India, Varchas launched its Straight Bourbon, Straight Rye, and Detroit Reserve Blended American Whiskey in the country. As part of our vision, we also want to bring other products, such as vodka, gin, and tequila, apart from another whiskey brand, to India, Shankar added. Indias whiskey market was valued at 21.13 billion dollars in 2023 and is projected to reach 28.97 billion dollars by 2030. Although American whiskey is gaining ground, it remains a relatively untapped segment. A young population, rising incomes, and increasing urbanisation are driving this trend. Shankar noted that Varchas aims to appeal to the aspirations and purchasing power of the Indian market, which is seeking premiumisation. We operate in a niche market, but where the consumers are aware, educated, and discerning. They include millennials and Gen Z, who dont want to drink just some old whiskies but rather something new. We are making a premium product available to them, he said. All of Varchas' spirits are distilled and bottled at its Michigan facility, which has a production capacity of 7,500 cases. The company prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients and water from the Great Lakes for its recipes. Globally, Varchas has plans to expand into Canada, Japan, and the UK, while currently serving markets in Michigan, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania in the United States.

Karnataka: BJP MLA walks out of event amid row over Waqf land remarks
Bagalkot: In a sudden turn of events, Bijapur City MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal stopped his speech midway and exited a programme at the Allamaprabhu Temple in Terdal, Bagalkot district, after attendees voiced strong objections to his remarks about Waqf land. A video capturing the incident has since gone viral on social media. The event took place on Monday, where Yatnals speech was interrupted after he referenced a land claim made by the Waqf Board. Audience members highlighted the temples diverse base of support, noting that donations came from multiple communities, with one prominent contribution of Rs 6 lakh reportedly made by an individual from a different religious community. In response to these objections, Yatnal stopped speaking and exited the stage, despite attempts by some attendees to encourage him to continue. The incident has drawn criticism from various quarters, with Muslim community leaders condemning Yatnals choice to bring up a divisive topic at a religious venue. K. Ashraf, former Mangaluru Mayor and president of the Dakshina Kannada Muslim Okkuta, commented, The publics reaction underscored their rejection of what they perceived as an attempt to sow discord. HYDERABAD: As the scorching sun hinted at the start of summer, the season of sweat, endless demands for elaneer (tender coconut), patches of prickly heat followed. At night, beds and mattresses were abandoned without a second thought for the floor as our limbs relished the coolness of paais (mat), or the red oxide and stone in my grandparents houses in Tiruchy and Thanjavur. As the popular adage goes, home is where the heart is and the first encounter with any home is intertwined with its signature smell; however, the first tangible encounter is being ushered under the roof and stepping into the cool flooring, testing out the waters in a new space. Indian traditional flooring which has collected memories over decades also carries careful traces of craft. This art, polished over time, has been passed on through generations each style perfected by artisans, with whispers of mastery, a regions memory of art and culture. Traditional flooring used in various parts of India includes stone, wood, lime concrete, and mud. While porcelain and ceramic tiles are in vogue owing to various factors such as finish, maintenance, ease of procurement, and speed of laying, traditional flooring materials still dot the architecture world, says senior architect AR Kurian George Vattakunnel. From terracotta and mud in Mangaluru and Kerala to granite and sedimentary stones such as limestones in Kota, and sandstones in Dholpur and Jaisalmer traditional flooring is diverse. The tiles used in homes depend on the area, highlights architect and designer Benny Kuriakose. The natural materials whether stone, marble or granite are used in traditional ways and are good because you quarry and use it; and there is a huge variation in hardness and aberration. They dont have a harmful effect on health unlike artificial materials, he says. Stones have been used traditionally across the length and breadth of the country. India has the most types of climates tropical, with high rains in Cherrapunji and Kerala, and extreme cold in Himachal. India is a microcosm of all the weather in the world. Stone is a traditional material used in slightly more affluent homes, and is a long-lasting material. But stone has an ethical problem, it has thousands of years to form and when you quarry it, you are changing the topography of a place, says Kurian. In the architecture world, Benny notes, the trend is moving away from marble and granite to traditional stones as the latter are softer. CE explores four types of traditional flooring used in India. Kota Stone Whether youre a frequent flyer or a stranger to air travel, the next time you visit Chennais Airport, take a look at the flooring. Crafted with Kota Stone, these tiles are sedimentary limestone and typically available in shades of gray. Sourced from Rajasthans Kota region, these tiles are resistant and durable, and will withstand mild acid as well, explains Benny. This stone which has a greenish colour and is celebrated for its versatility obtained a GI tag in 2019. Athangudi Tiles W ith pillars, intricately carved ceilings, and stained glass, Chettinads mansions are opulent, and continue to draw crowds of tourists. Many linger to marvel at the palaces Athangudi tiles a mix of cement, concrete, and pigments, which transform into intricate flower-like designs. With roots in the states Chettinad region, this eco-friendly, handmade GI-tagged Karaikudi tiles are characterised by pastel, intricate, and checkered craftsmanship. Athangudi tiles, also known as Chettinadu or Karaikudi tiles, are concrete tiles cast on glass and painstakingly painted with patterns. With continued usage, the sheen of this flooring increases. Concrete flooring requires very careful and technically sound laying. As it ages, the shine gets better. But it is an easy crack, you need to be careful, explains Kurian. However, he adds, that the flooring may suffer cracks due to various factors. The designs of these tiles are from Europes Victorian tiles, says Benny. When the colonies were established, it would have come along with some of those foreigners. They are still being manufactured in various countries, and are similar to Minton tiles, he points out, adding that they are handmade. Terracotta Tiles F rom the Indus Valley Civilisation to trade and commerce in ancient times, the art of Terracotta dates back centuries. Now, anyone on a road trip zooming across the dusty roads, pastures, and highways of Tamil Nadu or Karnataka would have chanced upon terracotta horse sculptures, toys, mud pots, and lamps on the side of the road sold by hawkers. However, this material is not restricted to pots, pans, and art but is found in the flooring of homes. Mud flooring, in its natural form combined with binders and natural reinforcements, has been the flooring in use in several parts of the country. Baked mud or terracotta flooring is a more evolved usage of mudthis flooring has very low embodied energy and, like wood, is good to feel under the sole of your bare feet, explains Kurian, adding, they might scratch easily, though. Mangalore tiles and flooring like terracotta and mud are easy to replace, says Benny. We also had tiles in nattu oodu, which potters used to make in most villages in a handmade manner with clay, he adds. Cuddapah Stone Found in the quarries of south-central Andhra Pradesh, the cuddapah stone is durable and hardy. A stark black shade, this stone is used commonly in interiors and easy to cut into pieces. However, Kurian points out that the careful usage of locally available stones may be considered however with caution. Stones, though comparatively low on embodied energy, take several millions of years to form.
North Karnataka Braces for By-Election Showdown in Sandur and Shiggaon
The by-elections had a healthy voting percentage of 76.71 percent. The by-elections had a healthy voting percentage of 76.71 percent. Mangaluru: The public campaign for the by-elections scheduled on November 13 concluded on Monday evening. All eyes are on Shiggaon and Sandur in North Karnataka which have been a bastion of BJP and Congress respectively since 2008. Interestingly the two leaders Basavaraj Bommai and E Tukaram have been representing Shiggaon and Sandur respectively since 2008 and the by-election is being held after both of them won the recent parliament election. While BJP has fielded Basavaraj Bommais son Bharath Bommai as its candidate in its stronghold Shiggaon, Congress has fielded Tukarams wife Annapoorna as its candidate in its stronghold Sandur. Sandur: A Congress Stronghold on the Line Sandur has long been a bastion for the Congress party, with its grip solidified since the seat was classified as reserved for Scheduled Tribes post-delimitation. Here, the Congress has consistently won (except in 1985 and 2004), most recently through MLA E Tukaram. His ascent to MP in the recent election after winning the seat for four times has left the seat open for a fierce contest. Confident of retaining the seat, Congress has fielded Tukaram's wife, Annapoorna, banking on her ties with the constituency and the support of influential leaders led by Minister Santosh Lad. CM Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar too camped here and held extensive campaign to retain the seat. The BJP, however, is hoping to break Congresss hold for the first time, with Bangaru Hanumantha, the BJP state chief of the ST Morcha, now in the fray. Although Hanumantha contested as an independent in 2018, he is now backed by a JD(S) alliance, adding strength to BJP's bid. The campaign here saw an intense ground game, with heavyweights like Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, and Santosh Lad rallying for Congress, highlighting the party's schemes and condemning alleged mismanagement by the BJP-led central government and reminding the people about the dark days during the rule of Reddy brothers. In a counter-effort, BJPs senior leaders led by BS Yediyurappa and mining baron G. Janardhan Reddy campaigned intensively, banking on anti-incumbency sentiments and various controversies surrounding the Congress-led state government. The battle in Sandur has turned into a prestige issue for Congress, and any slip-up could tarnish the partys control over one of its traditional strongholds. Shiggaon: The Bommai Legacy in Focus While Sandur is a Congress stronghold, Shiggaon stands as a BJP bastion, firmly held by Basavaraj Bommai since he joined the party in 2008. Bommais successive victories consolidated Shiggaon under BJP's fold, a legacy he reinforced through development projects until his recent election as MP for Haveri. This by-election now sees BJP fielding his son, Bharath Bommai, who is counting on both his fathers legacy and substantial support from BJP stalwarts like BS Yediyurappa and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. For BJP, a win here is critical. Shiggaon is under the Dharwad parliamentary constituency, represented by Pralhad Joshi, and a loss could be perceived as a setback for both Joshi and the Bommai family. BJPs campaign has emphasized Bommais contributions to Shiggaons development, and capitalize on internal party friction in the Congress and candidate selection controversies. On the Congress front, the party draws confidence from its recent parliamentary performance in Shiggaon segment where it led by 8,000 votes over BJP in the Dharwad parliament seat. The Congress is also banking on anti-incumbency and the failure during the BJP government, hoping they resonate with voters. In addition to the local issues and anti-incumbency all eyes are on how the state issues like the MUDA scam, Valmiki Corporation misappropriation, Waqf issue would affect the election. The election will also be interesting as the BJP-JD(S) coalition is on one side and Congress on the other side. While the coalition was formed during the parliament election, people are keen to see how it works during the election related to the state.

CM Siddaramaiah seeks probe against Yediyurappa, Sriramulu
Mangaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has acknowledged media reports regarding recommendations from a committee led by retired Justice John Michael D'Cunha to file cases against former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and former Health Minister B Sriramulu under the Prevention of Corruption Act. These recommendations relate to alleged corruption in PPE kit procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic. The D'Cunha Committee report, submitted in August, spans over 1,700 pages and is currently under review by a Cabinet Sub-Committee, Siddaramaiah revealed. The government will take appropriate action after a thorough examination, he said in a statement. This is a scam we initially exposed. During COVID, the governments duty was to ensure adequate treatment and save lives, but they allegedly sought profit in a dire situation. Siddaramaiah also expressed concern over the scale of the alleged corruption, which media reports estimate at Rs. 10,000 to 15,000 crore. He stated that the information circulating may be just the tip of the iceberg and that the committee may have gathered substantial evidence. The Chief Minister demanded that Yediyurappa, his son Vijayendra, and Sriramulu suspend their election campaigns until the inquiry concludes. If they have any self-respect, they should refrain from public appearances, he said, urging people to boycott their events. The Congress party previously highlighted the cost discrepancies, revealing that Indian PPE kits were available at Rs 200-300 each, while Yediyurappas government allegedly procured kits at Rs 2,000 from Chinese companies. We presented proof of corruption in purchasing medical supplies like beds, ventilators, oxygen, and sanitizers, but the government denied these allegations, Siddaramaiah stated. Siddaramaiah further alleged that the former BJP government may have misrepresented COVID-19 death figures, claiming the actual toll could be over 50,000 in Karnataka alone. He suggested that inadequate pandemic response, compounded by corruption, led to preventable deaths. People have died not just from COVID-19 but from a corruption virus, he remarked, holding the BJP-led government from 2019 to 2023 accountable. The CM also implicated BY Vijayendra, Yediyurappas son and the current BJP state president, stating he was involved in the government administration. He further linked Sriramulus political ascent to previous scandals, including alleged involvement in the mining sector. For them, politics has been about profitwhether through iron ore or life-saving medical supplies, he said, condemning their current campaign efforts. Siddaramaiah assured that his government remains committed to addressing these allegations once the D'Cunha report review concludes.

No end to illegal waste transport from Kerala to other states
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite repeated complaints from other states, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the illegal transportation of waste from Kerala to other states continues unabated. On Monday, as many as six trucks with Kerala registration carrying tonnes of animal, plastic and biomedical waste were seized near the Mulehole checkpost in Gundlupet in Karnataka. It is learned that the vehicles had no proper documents and the Gundlupet police have filed an FIR against seven individuals involved in transporting waste. This is not the first time other states have raised similar complaints against Kerala. In May this year, a similar incident was flagged. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) also intervened in the matter prompting the Local Self Government Department (LSGD) and the state Pollution Control Board to take necessary steps to curb the illegal dumping of waste in other states. Chairperson of Kerala State Pollution Control Board Sreekala S told TNIE that the matter had come to their notice. We are awaiting for more information from the PCB authorities in Karnataka. We are yet to get an official report from them. From the preliminary inquiry, it was found that the trucks were from Kerala and it was en route to a cement factory in Andhra Pradesh. From the information they provided, they didnt have proper documents. We are waiting for the official report. We have alerted all the District Collectors to track such violations, said Sreekala. She said that plans were afoot to introduce a GPS tracking system in all vehicles deployed for inter-state transportation of waste. Its getting ready and will be deployed soon and this will help curb such violations, she added. Currently, the government has tied up with cement factories and recycling plants in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other states for disposing of tonnes of rejects and non-biodegradable waste generated in Kerala. The Clean Kerala Company Ltd (CKCL), an agency under the LSGD ensuring the scientific handling of waste generated in over 720 local bodies in Kerala, transports around 3,000 tonnes of waste to various cement factories every month. As per the findings of the CPCB, Kerala is able to handle only 30 percent of the total waste generated. The state with a population of over 3.34 crore generates around 3.7 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually. The CKCL has tied up with 50 empanelled service providers for handling waste. We are in the process of introducing an online system for tracking the generation, collection and movement of waste. We have given direction to the local bodies to prepare a transportation plan. All this will be integrated in the Haritha Mithram application. Such issues will be resolved once this is in place, said LSGD special secretary T V Anupama. Unauthorised operators in both states involved in violations According to sources, there are illegal transporters operating in the state collecting waste at discounted rates and handing it over to illegal operators based in Mangaluru. Ibrahim Ammankulangara, a private service provider based in Malappuram, said that some of the local bodies were inviting tenders and roping in empanelled agencies. They only compare the rates and give the waste to the agencies who charges less. There are agencies illegally handing over this waste to illegal operators in other states. They take money from both parties. These trucks come back with groceries from Karnataka. There are also container trucks from other states coming to Kerala with animals for slaughtering. These trucks are sent back loaded with waste by these operators, alleged Ammankulangara.
First-ever survey of islands on, but Karnataka fails to share data
BENGALURU: Even two months after the Survey of India (SOI) requested details of islands along the coast, the state government and coastal agencies have yet to provide the information. In August of this year, the agency wrote to research bodies and district administrations in coastal regions across India, including Karnataka, asking for information on islands and islets, such as their names, survey numbers, and geo-coordinates. This is the first time such a detailed study is being conducted. However, no data has been shared by Karnataka. Information was requested from the Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts. In fact, there was only one response a mere acknowledgment from a deputy commissioner. Authorities are unable to provide the required information, as they are unsure which agency is responsible for the survey and how it should be conducted, SOI sources told The New Indian Express . In the absence of the necessary data, the SOI team from Bengaluru will carry out the study themselves, from November to March, covering the 370-km coastline from Karwar to Mangaluru. Satellite images have been obtained, and ground surveys will be conducted and compared to the base maps, an SOI official said. This is the first time that detailed information is being collected to assess the area of development, plan for future growth, determine coastal boundaries, and understand how much land has been lost or gained over time due to erosion. In the letter, the SOI also requested details about areas under the Karnataka State Coastal Zone Management Authority, the administrative bodies managing the islands, the population, existing facilities and infrastructure, and the environmental status. The information is intended to support the acquisition and production of geospatial data services, including maps, under the National Geo Policy-2022 for the updation of island data, the letter stated. Venkateswara Rao, Director of the Karnataka Geo-Spatial Directorate at SOI, said, So far, we have data on land records, but there is no updated information on coastal areas, which is why we sought these details. While we have some information on the islands, many of them do not have names; this also needs to be clarified.
