MANGALURU: A At first glance, Vijaya may appear to be just another watchman at the gates of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University). But behind that uniform is a man of unshakeable passion for theatre. Hailing from Hanekal near Bengaluru, Vijayas tryst with theatre began when he was nine years old. Growing up in a modest household, he had few material possessions but an imagination that knew no bounds. It all started when my mother noticed my interest in drama, recalls Vijaya. There was a drama practice happening nearby, and she requested them to let me take part. His mothers encouragement turned out to be the spark that ignited a lifelong passion. Vijaya was offered the role of Shikandi in a mythological play. Though it was a minor part, it gave him the confidence to pursue acting seriously. Within two years, he was entrusted with more prominent roles playing characters like Vidura, Karna, Arjuna, and Dharmaraya. Each performance polished his skills. I loved stepping into different characters and living their emotions, he says. At 16, Vijaya won an award at Kala Kshetra in Bengaluru for his portrayal of Shakuni in a mythological drama. This was not a role he had prepared for. His drama teacher, Jayaram, had offered him the part at the last minute when the actor who was to play Shakuni fell ill. It was a replacement role, but I put my heart and soul into it, Vijaya recalls. Not long after that performance, Jayaram passed away. The loss of his teacher and the dissolution of the team marked a turning point in his journey. Vijaya lost his parents when he was 17 and he moved to Mangaluru. He worked as a hotel supplier. He had little opportunity to pursue his artistic goals. Even while working long hours, I would often recite dialogues in my mind, he admits. The love for theatre never faded. Seven years ago, Vijaya joined St. Aloysius as a watchman. His passion for drama, however, remained alive. Whenever he saw students rehearsing for plays or college events, he reminisced of his days on the stage. Two years ago, Vijaya mentioned his background in theatre to lecturer Christy. During an event organized by the Ranga Adhyayana Kendra at the college, Vijaya was invited as a guest. What followed left the audience spellbound. Vijaya Vijaya performed a 10-minute monologue as Shakuni, the very role that had earned him acclaim years ago. With minimal preparation, he flawlessly delivered his dialogues, captivating the students and faculty alike. I didnt have a script, Vijaya says. I remembered the dialogues from my younger days. During my free time at work, I often practice a few lines just to keep the passion alive. Performing again after so many years was like traveling back in time. The applause he received that day reaffirmed his identity as an artiste. St Aloysius is my second home, he says. Ive earned not just respect here, but genuine love. Even after students graduate, many still call or message me to ask about my health. That affection means everything to me. Vijaya is married to, Kushala, and their daughter, Trisha, is currently doing her pre-university at St. Aloysius. Vice-Chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Dr. Praveen Martis, praised Vijayas sincerity and passion. During the college event where he performed, parents, teachers, and students were amazed by his talent. He is a passionate man, he told TNIE . Speaking to TNIE one of the staff members added, we dont see Vijaya as just a watchman. He is one of us, and always ready to help. Outgoing students often make sure to take a group photo with him before leaving the college. That shows how much he is loved here. Christopher DSouza, Director, Ranga Adhyana Kendra, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), says, We regularly practice drama late in the evening. Vijaya has built a rapport with everyone, often helping us during rehearsals. One day, he mentioned that he came from a traditional drama troupe. We often saw him practicing dialogues while walking around, and were amazed by his ability to recall lines even after 35 years. We later invited him as a guest to our student theatre festival and encouraged him to wear a costume again. There were tears in his eyes as he stepped on to the stage. His two-minute performance left the entire audience awestruck. For Vijaya, every day at the university gate is more than a job. Its another scene in the larger play of life, one where kindness, humility, and love for art take center stage.

'When We Were Young...' Sandalwood celebs on their favourite game as a kid
As the sun sets on a summer day, you count down from 10 as your cousins find hiding spots in nooks and crannies throughout the street. Maybe youve spent the day playing cricket and causing havoc with friends, or indoors, enjoying games like chowka bara or aliguli mane with your grandparents. Whatever it may have been, the games we play as kids, the people we play them with and the ways they form us and our experiences of childhood, are undeniable. As children across the country gear up to be celebrated and pampered on November 14, CE takes Bengaluru celebrities on a stroll down memory lane by asking: What are the games that really shaped your childhood? Pranitha Subash, actor After school, I would rush over to my neighbours. There were eight of us girls in the same lane where we lived, all about the same age. I mostly played hide-and-seek with my girl gang. Now I see it has become a common game; even a one-year-old is picking it up. My son hides behind the curtains and says peek-a-boo this generation calls it that, but for us, it was hide-and-seek. I think the game appeals to all ages. We also played Marco Polo blindfolded, and we would often turn it into a treasure hunt mixed with some challenges, as we saw on Nickelodeon. Thinking about those times makes me feel blessed that we had so much free time and didnt need moms to arrange playdates. Nowadays, its become complicated to keep kids engaged, but back then, it was pretty convenient. Pranitha Subash Rajavardan, actor I used to love cars and often played with a lot of car toys. Hide-and-seek was another fun game that I played with friends. I would hide in tricky places, and when they finally gave up, I would come out laughing! From playing with toy cars to going on long drives and even off-roading with my cousins now, it has become one of my best stress busters. I enjoy playing hide and seek and little races with my younger cousins, too its fun watching them enjoy just like we used to. I really think its important to keep these simple games alive; you dont need phones or gadgets, just friends, laughter and a little imagination. Rajavardan Pruthvi Ambaar, actor I was born and brought up in a remote village and my go-to game was obviously cricket. But besides that, was mara kothi, literally translated as tree-monkey game, where one player went to pick up a stick while others climbed the trees as high as possible to never get caught by the opponent. As kids, we used to play this game very often. Samyukta Hornad, actor My dad was a little strict, so TV was banned in my house. As soon as we came back from school, a lot of us used to be on the road playing lagori, cricket, kunte bille (hopscotch), chowka baara and other games that my grandmother used to teach us. One of the things that made me who Im is playing outside in nature with dogs, cats and other animals. Even now, during my time off, nature is my escape. Cricket is one of those games that I continue to play today. Everyone in my family is obsessed with cricket. I even play it during film shoots one of the games was on the sets of Max (2024). Samyukta Hornad Nirup Bhandari, actor My brother, Anup, and I used to play cricket, especially during summer vacations in Puttur. We had a group of three to four friends and wed race our cycles around the area. We also played board games like carrom, snakes and ladders and chenne mane, which is common in Mangaluru. We loved playing lagori too. One memory I recall from that time is of my cousins and me playing a card game with a rolled-up mattress next to us. One of my cousins suddenly said, Look! A snake!, pointing at something sticking out of the mattress. I confidently pulled it, saying, Eh, no, its just a belt, and suddenly it moved (laughs). It was a house surrounded by a forest area, so when we opened up the mattress, it slithered away. Nirup Bhandari Vasishta Simha, actor I spent most of my childhood on the streets always playing, always into something. We had separate groups for different games: lagori, kabaddi, gilli dandu and cricket. Among them, goli was my go-to whenever I visited my hometown, Ramanathapura. Goli had many variations, one was where you lined up the golis and shot it to a hole. Of course, the fun often turned into playful fights targeting opponents and focusing on winning. After a session of goli, wed head to the Kaveri river for a swim. I really miss those street games; at our age, our lifestyle doesnt allow that. Im waiting for my son to grow up so I can play with him. Back then, it was easy to socialise, play and bond with each other. We never worried about vitamin D deficiency because we were always out in the sun, building immunity while socialising came naturally. Vasishta Simha Chandan Kumar, actor My friends and I used to play cricket with a paper ball and an exam pad as our bat (laughs). We were always getting in trouble with our parents. Once, I brought a puppy home to play with and hid it in a cardboard box, thinking I could take care of it without anyone knowing. But it cried through the night, frightening me because I believed in ghosts back then and thought the sounds were coming from a spirit. That night, my parents found out and I got in a lot of trouble!

After air gun slip up, Kerala teen fires up police, media with gang yarn
KASARGOD: A 14-year-old toying with his fathers air gun placed the entire district police force on tenterhooks and caused high drama, as he fabricated a story to escape reprimand after shattering the balcony glass of his home with the firearm. Police scoured CCTV footage, deployed forensic teams, collected ballistic analysis on Sunday to finally conclude that something was amiss. On Saturday night, Uppala resident Ismail Sinan filed a complaint with Manjeshwar police about an unidentified person shooting the glass panel on the balcony of his home, shattering it and causing a Rs 25,000 damage between 5.45 pm and 5.53 pm. Police booked a case for manufacturing, selling, possessing prohibited arms and mischief of a serious nature. Sinans father Aboobacker Siddik lives in Qatar while his family stays at their house in Uppala. The FIR caused an uproar as media teams rushed to Uppala, which was notorious for gang wars and links to gold smuggling in the past. Some media houses even reported a spike in the crime rate in Uppala following the incident, a police officer said. There was speculation of the involvement of a Kozhikode-based gang that had visited Uppala recently after a gold-smuggling deal went wrong. Adding to the flutter, a Mangaluru-based history-sheeter Thoppi alias Naufal, 45, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on the railway tracks near Uppala last week. Not willing to take any chances, district police chief B V Vijaya Bharat Reddy deployed a police team led by Manjeshwaram station inspector Ajith Kumar P, under the supervision of his deputy, ASP Nandagopalan M. By Sunday evening, officers started picking holes in the complaint. CCTV footage showed no evidence of vehicles in the vicinity when the shooting was said to have happened. Five pellets found on the balcony added to the intrigue. And, the ballistic report proved that the shots were fired from inside the house. When officers cornered the family with details, the boy spilled the beans. While his mother was away on a wedding, sister at work and brother in Mangaluru on Saturday evening, he took his fathers air gun and started playing with it. The gun fascinated the online-gaming-crazed teen, who ended up discharging it multiple times by accident. In panic, he called his brother in Mangaluru with a fabricated story of a gang in a car firing at the house. The police closed the case without tacking action against the boy. He was terrified and crying profusely. We decided to let him him with a stern warning, the district police chief said.

Sporting ICF coaches, Keralas oldest long-haul train struggling to move on
KASARGOD: Around 3pm, the electric locomotive pulls into Kanhangad railway station, bringing in its wake the yellow and maroon liveried rakes of the 12602 Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central Mail -- for its scheduled two-minute stop. The train bears history, as the first long-haul service to have chugged into Kerala the erstwhile Malabar presidency to be precise in 1867, 14 years after the countrys first passenger railroad made it from Bori Bunder to Thane. And it seems to be having trouble shaking off its legacy, as it continues to operate the old, rugged Integral Coach Factory (ICF) cars, while most other trains have moved on to modern Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) coaches. This, despite the April 2018 policy decision to stop manufacturing conventional carriages and switch over completely to LHB coaches. Its services were numbered 1 and 2 (presently 12601 and 12602), running from Royapuram near Chennai to Chaliyam (present-day Beypore). It was named the Mangalore-Madras Mail in 1887 even though the train was extended to Mangalore only after the completion of the Netravati Bridge in 1907. The train moved people from Malabar and Mangalore to Chennai to establish shops, bakeries, eateries and enterprises, says R Prasanth Kumar, president of the Kasaragod District Rail Passengers Association. However, the train missed the boat when Indian Railways started taking to modern LHB coaches in 2000. Several trains, including those running between the same destinations, such as the 12685/12686 MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Superfast Express were provided LHB coaches. The Netravati bridge. Though named Mangalore Mail, the train went to Mangalore only in 1907 after the bridge was constructed that year Given its history, it should have been the first train to get LHB coaches, stresses Prasanth. LHB coaches are made of stainless steel and are lighter each weighing 35-40 tonnes compared with ICF coaches that are made of iron and weigh 45-50 tonnes. Despite repeated appeals, the officials at Southern Railway keep parroting that they dont have coaches, says Hanumantha Kamath of the West Coast Rail Yatri Development Committee in Mangaluru. Railway sources said the zonal authority allots LHB coaches when it receives them from coach-manufacturing plants in Perambur, Kapurthala and Raebareli. The rakes are provided to the divisions maintaining trains. Accordingly, they are replaced. Chennai Central - Mangaluru Central Mail would soon get LHB coaches, said an official with the Palakkad division.

Aviation growth story piggybacking on foreign travel: AAI report
NEW DELHI: The growing desire for international travel continues to fuel Indias aviation growth story. The Air Traffic Report, made public on Wednesday, shows that 3.95 crore passengers travelled abroad from India between April and September 2025, up from 3.69 crore during the same period in 2024. Among them, Bagdogra and Coimbatore posted remarkable increases of 51% (13,492 flyers) and 50.5% (1,60,597 flyers), respectively, in AprilSeptember 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Among major airports, both Delhi and Mumbai reported negative growth in domestic travel. The closure of Terminal 2 at IGIA and changes in flight schedules significantly impacted Delhis numbers, which dropped by 5.8% to 2,64,91,445 passengers, compared to 2,81,07,645 last year. Mumbai saw a 0.8% dip, handling 1,91,02,987 passengers. DGCA faults Indigos pilot training, slaps Rs 20 lakh fine
NEW DELHI: Indigo has been fined a penalty of Rs 20 lakh by the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), recently for faulty training of pilots in specific categories of high risk airports. The airline plans to legally challenge the order. In a disclosure filed in the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday as mandated by SEBI regulations, Indigos parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, has reported that the DGCA had levied Rs 20 lakh penalty on it on September 26. Specifying the violation by the airline which resulted in the penalty, the airline attributes it to its alleged failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes. Category C or high-risk airports refer to aerodromes with challenging approaches or complicated terrain and only pilots who have undergone specialised training can operate flights in them. The disclosure further states, The company is in the process of contesting the order before the appropriate appellate authority. Over 1,700 pilots in Indigo are provided this critical airfield training as revealed through an earlier order the airline had received from the regulator. Elaborating on what qualified simulators refer to, Captain Anil S Rao, president of the All India Pilots Association, told this reporter, All simulators used in aviation need to have a whole topographical view (realistic, actual view) of the airport and its surroundings t. A generic airfield will not have a topographic view. For instance, Calicut and Mangaluru airports have a 300-feet high table top and require what is known as a qualified simulator. Similarly, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl and Shimla are among the category C airports. Kabul and Kathmandu in the vicinity too are classified under it. On August 11, DGCA had issued a show cause notice to Indigo in connection with lapses in simulator training. Earlier, Air India Express too had received a similar notice in connection with the Calicut International Airport.
