Ayush Shetty beat pressure all by himself at US Open: Mom
UDUPI: When Ayush Shetty clinched a noteworthy victory at the US Open Super 300 event, there was quiet pride and deep satisfaction in his home in Sanoor, Karkala, in Udupi district. His father, Ramprakash Shetty, a businessman, marked his sons achievement with a temple visit in Kerala, while his mother Shalmili and younger sister Aadhya celebrated with heartfelt joy at home. They recalled the sacrifices and relentless discipline that shaped Ayushs journey. Ayush began playing badminton at the age of eight, following his fathers game in their backyard. In 2013, at just eight years old, he entered his first tournament- a district-level competition in Udupi. Ayush won the title despite never having received formal coaching till then. His mother speaking to TNIE on Tuesday recalled how quickly the journey of Ayush picked up pace. By 2016, he had topped the state rankings in the under 13 and 15 categories, she said. His initial training began at Johns Academy in Karkala, then at Badminton Mangaluru on alternate days. Even when he lost matches, he never let it break him. He would take the pressure, process it quietly and bounce back stronger. That is his strength- his inner drive to keep growing she added. As Ayush continued winning at state-ranking events, the family decided to move to Bengaluru for better exposure. In Bengaluru, Ayush trained under Mohith Kamath at Badyzone, then with Krishna Kumar at iSports for four years. After Class 10, he joined the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, where he has been training for five years now under top coaches Vimal Kumar and Sagar Chopda. A former student of Prakruti National School, Sanoor, Karkala, Ayush excelled in studies too. Though he began a B.Sc in Sports Science at Reva University, he later took up a job with Kolkata Railways as a catering inspector and is now pursuing B.Com from the University of Mysore through distance education. Ayush has always been calm, focused and determined said Shalmili.

Wheels within wheels: What Sundar Sarukkai's Water Days tells us about Bengaluru and who belongs
Cities are an extension of who we are and of the people who inhabit them. They mirror our anxieties and hold space for the selves we grow into. Delhi, for instance, is known for its sprawling markets, ancient monuments, endless stories and chaos but for every Delhiite, the city is a home and a memory. Its the same for author and philosopher Sundar Sarukkai of Bengaluru, whose new book Water Days (Westland) explores what his home city has meant to him through the unravelling of a mystery. Sarukkai presents his city as if it were another character. Set in the late 1990s in Mathikere Extension, a locality in north Bengaluru where he once lived the novel follows Raghavendra, a security guard and reluctant detective, through 13 days after the death of a young girl. The book unfolds as a tale about belonging, migration, and the heartbreaks that reshape a city. Sundar Sarukkai, author and philosopher A citys language In the beginning of the book, he asks: How does one write in the mother tongue of a city? Bengaluru, he says, speaks not just in Kannada or Tamil but in a sensorial language, of the rain, of the water taps, of the street dogs, the slushy roads. The book is filled with dialects of English, shaped by the citys streets, silences, and identities. Set in the 90s, Water Days might seem nostalgic, but Sarukkai isnt romanticising the past. Instead, the novel becomes a lens into the communities that constitute Bengaluru and a reflection of their everyday lives. The question of everyday life really interests me, he says. From the way society functions how it is driven by everyday processes and people. For Sarukkai, the novel is ultimately about what happens to a city silently. He maps the gestures of people in transition those pulled into unexpected events. Thats how cities work too they pull you into something before you even realise youre a part of it, he says. Language politics Today, Bengaluru is at the centre of increasingly hostile language politics. Non-Kannada speakers are often told to speak Kannada. But Sarukkai asks: What was the identity of Bengaluru to begin with? Unlike cities with strong linguistic identities like Mysuru or Mangaluru, Bengaluru, he says, has always been more fluid. Once called the garden city, it later became a science city and then a tech city but he says its true nature was shaped by migrants. Tamilians came with factories. Then Telugu speakers dominated real estate. Now labourers come from Odisha, Bihar, and North Karnataka. These are also the people who built the city, he says. So this fight about Kannada isnt about language its about power. About who gets to belong. To him, real language is culture, not coercion. Kannada is a beautiful language with an extraordinary literary tradition. But when its used politically, stripped of its depth, it becomes something else. People of Water Days The novel introduces a constellation of characters that reflect a city in flux: Raghavendra, a middle-aged security guard who becomes an unlikely detective; Poornima, his sharp, grounded wife; Rajesh, a Bihari student who avoids engaging with the city; Nagaraj, a scheming friend with political links; and Mari Muthu later Mari Gowda who reshapes his identity to fit in. But at the centre is Raghavendra no Poirot or Holmes, just a man navigating loneliness and survival. Sarukkai, a fan of Lee Child and John Le Carr, pairs his protagonists modest dream of running a grocery store with a reluctant detective arc, using it to question the very idea of crime fiction in India. How do you write a detective story in a country where the family is always involved in everything? In the West, detectives function independently. Here, you cant move without your familys input your job, your marriage, even where you live. This social fabric becomes the case itself. Raghavendras investigation is less about finding a culprit and more about navigating the citys tangled web of class, language, fear, and fate all while holding onto his quiet dream. Water Days is Sarukkais second novel, after Following a Prayer (2023), a more emotionally intense debut set in a remote village in the Western Ghats. That book dealt with rural silences and young girls inner lives. Water Days , by contrast, is gntler even lighter. With Following a Prayer , people told me they felt deeply moved, even angry, he says. But now, I just want them to smile. And maybe, next time they walk Bengalurus streets, they notice the small things the sounds, the silences, the people that make a city a city.

CM Siddaramaiah pulls up police top brass over stadium stampede
BENGALURU: When a chief minister speaks, the subordinates listen. Ive been an MLA since 1983 and have served as Chief Minister before. I have never witnessed such a delay in response in an incident like the recent stampede in Bengaluru . What is the purpose of having an intelligence department if it fails to provide comprehensive and timely information? Due to this lapse, 11 people lost their lives. On the day of the stampede, deaths had occurred as early as 3.50 pm. Yet, accurate information was not conveyed. Isnt this a serious lapse? Even when I inquired at 5.45 pm, I was told only one person had died. By then, 11 people had already passed away. If the senior officer had promptly conveyed accurate information, we could have cancelled the stadium event. I am also upset that we had to suspend senior officials. But isnt it true that there was indeed a failure on their part? Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked top police officers during the annual conference of senior police officers in Bengaluru on Friday. Noting that the quality of police investigations has deteriorated and needs to be improved, the CM cited the example of a robbery case in Bidar and expressed concern that though the accused was identified, the arrest had not been made even after five months. Though in some isolated cases the quality of investigation has improved, overall there is a visible decline. He pointed out the failure to file chargesheets accurately, effectively, and within the stipulated time in criminal cases, terming it unacceptable. 'Why only Mangaluru?' The Chief Minister sharply questioned officials, asking why suo motu action is not being taken against those delivering hate speeches or disturbing public peace. If you dont act, well be compelled to take action against you, he warned. Why is it that communal clashes and murders are primarily happening in Dakshina Kannada? Why not in other districts? he asked, directing officials to identify and crack down on those disrupting peace in Dakshina Kannada, regardless of who they are, and to take strict legal action. The CM added that the recruitment will begin two months from now to fill vacant positions in the department. Report released A research report titled A Study on the Use of Money Mules in Cybercrimes was released by the CM during the conference. A special team was formed by the Cybercrime Investigation, Training and Research Centre (CCITR) of the CID to study the widespread use of fake bank accounts (Mule Accounts) for illegal money transfers in cybercrime cases and to recommend measures to curb them. The team comprised experts from the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), representatives from the banking sector, senior police officers and investigators. As part of the study, complaints received on the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) portal in Karnataka during the year 2024 and cybercrime cases registered in Bengaluru city were consolidated and analyzed. The research report details recent cybercrime methods, the modus operandi of cyber criminals in transferring money, types of fake bank accounts, and existing regulations to control them. It also recommends measures to be followed by banks and other financial institutions, measures to be followed by police and other law enforcement agencies and measures to be taken by the government and regulators.

Airlines in India hugely impacted by Middle East crisis, Air India flights taking detour via Egypt
NEW DELHI: Even as airlines are grappling with the closure of airspace in Pakistan post the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, the Israel-Iran conflict has put further stress on them. Cancellation of flights or circuitous routes has become the norm since June 13 after Israel announced the closure of its airspace. An Air India official said, The closure of airspace by Pakistan followed by Israel, Iran, Iraq and then Jordan has forced us to take a roundabout route via Egypt, which involves an additional 45 to 60 minutes travel for every flight. On the day Israel announced the closure of its airspace, we had to divert 16 flights when they were airborne. The official said, We operate an average of 50 flights (inward and outward) daily from India to the US and Europe. All of them have to go down south and fly through Egyptian air space. It has definitely increased the turnaround time for all our flights. Air India has flights to Vienna, Copenhagen, London, Zurich, Milan, Paris and Frankfurt in Europe. It also has flights to Los Angeles, Newark, New York and San Francisco in the US. Making operations tougher are the stringent tests ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the aftermath of the Ahmedabad flight accident. These tests take anywhere between four and seven hours, an official said. Operation Sindhu: First evacuation flight with Indians from Iran to land early Thursday Air India Express cancellations Though its subsidiary Air India Express does not operate beyond Iran, it was also impacted because of the crowded airspace in Dubai. An Air India Express spokesperson said, We cancelled four flights totally today. We operate two pairs of flights daily between Mangaluru and Dubai. We cancelled one pair today. Air India pays moving tribute to Dreamliner crew with heartfelt collage
NEW DELHI: Eight women were among the 12 Air India crew members who lost their lives alongside 229 passengers in the ill-fated Dreamliner that crashed on 12 June in Ahmedabad . The diverse female crew, drawn from across the country, represented a blend of youth and experience, ranging in age from 22 to 44 years. A tribute to all its loved ones, featuring a classy collage, was released on Air Indias internal crew page and later posted by aviation expert Sanjay Lazar on X on Sunday. An Air India source confirmed that it had been shared widely within their internal groups. Eight of the deceased crew members hailed from Maharashtra. Air India crash: DNA profiling of victims is the most daunting task, says expert
BENGALURU: A tragedy of the scale of Air Indias Boeing 787-8 crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday is unfathomable and massive. Handling the aftermath of such accidents is an extremely tough job that requires trained, responsible and sensitive expertise. Fortunately, we do have the expertise in India. On the one hand is the shock and scale of the tragedy, on the other is the need to have immediate boots and hands on the ground. It begins with cordoning off the areas by the police, dousing the fire by expert fire personnel, searching for survivors and rushing them to the nearest hospital, pulling out the dead bodies from inside the debris and sending them to the nearby mortuaries. This is a humongous exercise which calls for immediate and seamless coordination of multiple agencies; from the airport authorities (in an incident like the AI171) to the local police, civic authorities, medics and paramedics, ambulance services, disaster response task force and young volunteers among others who serve as the first responders. The most daunting task is the identification of bodies, which may have got charred or disfigured beyond recognition because of the impact of the crash and the ensuing explosion. The pressure is on forensic doctors to identify and hand over the bodies to the relatives on an urgent basis, but this kind of pressure may be counterproductive. Also, the handing of the victims over to the next of kin requires sensitivity. Sometimes, only a part of the body is available and not the whole body. There are strict guidelines for disaster management and relief, which have to be adhered to. DNA profiling for disaster victim identification (DVI) is considered to be one of the most reliable and efficient means to identify bodies charred with dismembered body parts, said Dr Vina Vaswani, professor, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, and Director of the Centre for Ethics at Yenepoya (deemed to be University), Mangaluru. According to the DVI Interpol guidelines, In disasters, identification is established by taking a post mortem DNA sample, which is matched with their first-degree biological relative. From the relative, antemortem (information before death) information about the victim regarding dental treatment or past history of fracture surgery (including prosthetic implants) is also elicited. For instance, parents may inform them that their son or daughter had dentures or a front tooth missing, she said. AUW! Could Air India Flight AI-171's weight have doomed it? Vaswani said this kind of information acked up with treating dentists' records often helps in DVI. The forensic expert and ethicist said, In many instances, superficial body art like a tattoo or old surgical scar has helped in identifying bodies or a piece of jewellery on the person that is identified by their relative which is unique. This by itself cannot be used as the sole criteria for identification. DNA sampling, and antemortem interviews with relatives take time depending on the magnitude of the disaster. It could take more than a week or 10 days. She added, We have to be sensitive in handling the emotions of the families while being cautious in avoiding any rush in handing over bodies without confirming identity. Vaswani recounted the experience of the 2010 Mangaluru Air India Express crash victims. There were 10 to 12 bodies that remained unidentified towards the end. The state performed their last rites, she said. DNA can be collected from hair follicles, nails, teeth, tissue and bone marrow. This can be a challenge due to charring. Grief counsellors also play a very important role in tragedies of this scale, to soothe and calm the families as they await news of their loved ones in the hospital or are called for DNA samples. Unfortunately, we do not have the concept of grief counsellors, so nurses, medical attendants, staff and often the police come forward to help families deal with their grief. It requires empathy and a lot of patience, added Vaswani. Yenepoya (deemed to be University) has been providing DVI training for the last 10 years and many forensic doctors, dentists and forensic scientists have benefited from this hands-on training where disaster sites are simulated and the trainees get a real-world feel of DVI. The programme envisages training many more professionals so that disaster-preparedness in the country reaches global standards.
