Kozhikodes tabletop airport eased officials decision to choose Kochi

KOCHI: It was a miraculous escape for 160 passengers and crew of the Air India Express flight from Jeddah to Calicut, after the pilots realised mid-air that the landing gear developed a technical glitch, caused by multiple tyre bursts. That the flight was heading to the dangerous table-top airport at Calicut made the scenario all the more dangerous, and the pilots had to make some quick decisions weighing the limited options before them. It was decided to divert the Air India Express flight IX 398 as the tabletop airport at Calicut was posing high risk. Tabletops are risky and challenging to the best of pilots, and here the aircraft landing gear was stuck. So there were no second thoughts to divert the aircraft to nearby airports, said airline sources. The pilots were left with the choice to divert the flight to either Mangaluru, Kannur or to two airports in Goa, but they finally chose Kochi airport, given the airports preparedness and better facilities, including modern firefighting equipment. The preparedness at Kochi airport is world-class. The same was proved in the full-scale mock drill, showcasing the airports emergency preparedness, held just a couple of months back, on October 28, 2025. Further, an emergency landing involving a SpiceJet aircraft in a similar scenario was successfully carried out at the airport two years back. Hence it was decided to divert the flight to Kochi airport and make an emergency landing, even as the pilots were trying to gauge the extent of damage to the landing gear and the tyres, they said. The pilots quickly contacted the Air Traffic Control unit of the Kochi airport mid air at 8.35 am. An alert was sounded and the airport authorities immediately activated the Emergency Response Plan, without wasting a second. The authorities mobilised all relevant operational units, including Airport Fire & Rescue Services (AFRS), medical units, and security personnel, and positioned them along the runway as a precautionary measure. External stakeholders including State Fire & Rescue and State Police also joined them in keeping a high alert and ready to face any eventuality, an airport spokesperson said. The Air India Express flight touched down safely at Kochi airport at 9.08 am under full emergency conditions. However, what proved crucial in the end was the airport fire safety team spraying Fire Retardant Foamall along the course of the dedicated section of runway marked for the emergency landing. With all the emergency services activated, the aircraft landed safely at 9.08 am. During landing, sparks could be seen, and markings formed due to the damaged tyres. We were much relieved after it finally came to a halt. Luckily the aircraft didnt sway too much and the sparks died down even as they formed, the sources said. The gravity of the potentially dangerous situation was revealed when a post-landing inspection by technical teams confirmed that both the tyres on the right-side landing gear and the one at the left side had burst. The emergency response system too worked out to perfection. The markings caused due to the emergency landing were fixed with the help of modern systems. The aircraft was safely taxied off the runway, which was subsequently inspected for debris and released for normal flight operations shortly thereafter. No passenger or crew suffered any injuries. The teams worked in close coordination and the runway was cleared in just 35 minutes as it was (9 am to 10 am) peak traffic hour. All operations were coordinated according to standard procedures, and it is a relief that all passengers and crew are safe and being transported to their destination, said CIAL managing director S Suhas. Meanwhile, a section of passengers protested when the airlines informed the passengers that they would be transported to Calicut by road. The authorities initially assured us that we would be flown to our original destination in Karipur after a brief halt. However, once the passengers disembarked, the airline shifted its stance, stating we will be transported by bus instead, said an agitated passenger. DGCA made contract staff scapegoats by blaming them for IndiGo fiasco, alleges aviation expert

NEW DELHI: The removal of four Flight Operations Inspectors (FOIs) in the aftermath of the Indigo fiasco by the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, (DGCA) has run into controversy. An expert with 40 years of experience in the aviation industry, Sanjay Lazar, stirred a hornets nest on Sunday by charging the regulator of making scapegoats of the lower rung staff and demanded a probe by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to identify those responsible for the turmoil caused by the airline. Meanwhile, the DGCA countered the charges by stating the officials removed were directly responsible for keeping a watch on the functioning of Indigo for quite some time and had failed to do so. An order issued on December 11 by Sunil Singh Rawat, Deputy Director of Administration, DGCA, stated, The following FOIs under various categories, on contract basis, in DGCA are hereby relieved from DGCA with immediate effect to join their respective parent organisations. They are pilots drawn from different airlines who were temporarily posted at the DGCA. The names specified were Rish Raj Chatterjee (Consultant working as Deputy Chief Operations Inspector), Seema Jhamnani (Senior FOI) as well as Anil Kumar Pokahriyal and Priyam Kaushik (both Consultant FOIs) . It was an important development as they were the first heads to roll following the anguish experienced by lakhs of Indigo flyers from December 1 to 9. Lazar, an advocate and the CEO of Avialaz Consultants, said he was initially happy to learn that action had been initiated against these officials. Later, he realised that they were actuallylow hanging fruit and billed them 'Bali ka Bakra. I got to know only this morning that one of them, Pokhariyal, had resigned a couple of months ago, he claimed. He has been diagnosed with cancer during and was hospitalised. Calling Captain Kaushik a hero, Lazar recalled a 2016 incident when a Jet Airways flight from Bengaluru to Mangaluru caught fire mid-air. With one engine on fire, he landed the aircraft safely and saved 65 lives. He also led the first Kaveri operations from Sudan to Chennai during the 2023 repatriation mission, he said. Lazar added that the Captain, who is the son of a Defence Officer, told him during his interaction that he was not even involved in this as he was an 'Alternate Inspector (deployed when regular inspector is not available). I have been here only 6 or 8 months. I have neither been assigned any work in Indigo nor have I been called up, Captain Kaushik told him, Lazar added. The expert also added that the Captains wife expressed her anguish over the fact that ever since his name was made public, her kids found it difficult to even step out. Regarding Captain Chatterjee, Lazar said that he served as the Deputy Chief Pilot of Vistara He has a spotless, blameless record and he flew the 787s. The Captain had actually flagged the lapses at IndiGo to the regulator in a mail and was the first to alert them that 1,200 flights had not operated in November, the expert said. Victimisation without any inquiry All these pilots were removed without any letter officially, any inquiry, any show cause notice, no investigation, just ex parte and arbitrary. That also smacks of victimisation without any proof, he charged. He alleged that two or three top people were responsible for the fiasco. They are Joint Director Generals and one is an AD (Assistant Director). We know everybodys names. He billed the investigations by DGCA as a big cover-up game. The same officials who are responsible for giving favours to IndiGo are on the panel to probe the airline. A senior DGCA official told this reporter, The four were indeed assigned by the DGCA to monitor the airline and ensure they complied with all regulations Elaborating on each of those suspended, the official said that Pokahriyal went on medical leave for his cancer treatment only by late November this year. He is an Alliance Air pilot and has not resigned from there. Kaushik, was an Air India Express pilot, who was monitor the DGCA since Feb 2025, well before the first phase of FDTL would come into effect. Chatterjee was with the DGCA since May 2024. He may have been a celebrity pilot but that does not absolve him of his duties, the official stressed. Jamnani was told to keep a tab on Indigo for over a year. When asked about the controversy, a senior official in the Ministry of Civil Aviation said he would look into it.

Govt intends to establish five hi-tech SWM plants in city

BELAGAVI: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the state government intends to establish five more integrated solid waste management (SWM) plants in and around Bengaluru to process around 8,000 tonnes of waste. He was replying to MLA Dheeraj Muniraju during QuestionHour in the Assembly. Shivakumar, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister, said the SWM plants will generate biogas from waste. Muniraju opposed the move to establish an integrated SWM plant at Gundalahalli village in Doddaballapur district. The MLA said the people of Gundalahalli and nearby surrounding villages are against the proposed plant. It was because of theirprotest, the previous Siddaramaiah government did not go ahead with the project in 2016, stating that it will causeenvironment and water pollution. The government has not conducted social and environmental impact studies in the village,he added. Shivakumar said the proposed plant will be set up using advanced technology and there should not be any apprehension over pollution. The project has received environmental clearance. He urged the MLA to raise awareness among the villagers in thisregard. The DCM said that he is also keen onsetting up such plants in Kanakapura and Bidadi. Admitting the claim that a mafia is controlling the management of solid waste, Shivakumar said he is open to suggestions to improve cleanliness in the city, including bringing it under the Essential Services Maintenance Act. He said that he wants to adopt the Mangaluru City Corporations garbage clearance model for Bengaluru. E-khata applications Shivakumar said action has been taken to dispose of 31,274 applications for e-khatas and new khatas in GBA limits. Replying to MLA Gopalaiah K, he said to reduce the workload and avoid delays, the applications are now being processed by an automated and accurate allocation system that assigns work uniformly to revenue employees. Some legislators had pointed out that the new system of issuing e-khatas caused problems for property owners. Taking into consideration the advantages and disadvantages, arrangements will be made to revert to the earlier system of issuing e-khatas, Shivakumar said.

Youth murders friend in Karnataka's Hassan, posts video of crime scene

HASSAN: A youngster, under the influence of ganja, clobbered his friend to death with a stone on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway on Tuesday afternoon, even as passersby and local residents watched in horror. After a fight over a silly issue, Keerthi (24) of Huvinahalli Kaval village was murdered by his friend Ullas of Dodda Kanagal village in Alur taluk. What made the crime freakier was the fact that Ullas made a video of the scene of crime and uploaded it on social media, which went viral. Ullas, who is said to be addicted to ganja, was riding the bike with Keerthi when the fight broke out. Angry Ullas stopped the motorcycle on the highway and murdered Keerthi by smashing his forehead with a boulder. Ullas escaped on the same motorcycle after the incident. A police team, led by DySp Srinidhi, visited the spot with a sniffer dog and launched a manhunt for the murderer. Hassan residents alleged that the police have failed to control ganja that is coming in from neighbouring districts. Roadside canteens have turned into places where youngsters are buying ganja and also consuming it, they complained.

Santa Cruz Basilica: The 'Sistine Chapel' of Fort Kochi

David Lawrence does not consider himself the ideal Christian. Yet every morning, he slips quietly into the Santa Cruz Basilica in Fort Kochi his parish church and spends thirty unhurried minutes there. This is how I begin my day. This is my ritual, my anchor - and has been for many years now. It is essential. To quieten the mind, to reflect, to lift my thoughts, he says. This reverence, David adds, is stirred in part by the intricate frescoes that stretch across the churchs ceiling. They are luminous and deepen my sense of devotion. Indeed. Step into the Basilica and your gaze is immediately drawn skyward, to the long nave, where the ceiling frescoes unfold like a series of story panels, each scene guiding the eye onward, until it rests at the main altar at the far end. I have been to Rome to see the Sistine Chapel. Many famous murals adorn that chapel. Yet, I feel the ones here at Santa Cruz are no less magical, no less stirring, he adds. The altar of Santa Cruz Basilica Though unfamiliar with the finer points of the art world, Davids nod to the Sistine Chapel is fitting. The frescoes at Santa Cruz Basilica were done by an Italian Jesuit brother and painter named Antonio Moscheni, along with his disciple De Gama, says Rakhi Mariam Johnson, an architect and researcher who has done extensive studies on church architecture of Kerala. Accounts on Antonio reveal that the artist had spent his youth in Rome, studying the masterpieces in the Vatican. Apparently, it is there that he developed an interest in fresco painting. Several of his works can be found in the churches of Italys Bergamo province, and, as his talent attracted attention, in places as far as Croatia and Albania. In 1898, Antonio was assigned work in India to paint the chapel of St Aloysius College in Mangaluru, which was then recently founded by Italian Jesuits, reads a note shared by the college. Over the course of two years, Antonio covered walls, ceiling and pillars with framed, vivid tableaux on the life of St Aloysius Gonzaga, the colleges patron saint, and on the mysteries of the Christian faith. Because paints were not available locally and Europe was too far, Antonio prepared the paints using vegetable dyes, the note further reads. The frescoes that adorn the chapel of St Aloysius College in Mangaluru Though Antonio was to return to Europe after completing the college work, his fame had by then spread in India, and requests came from all quarters for similar works. The chapel of the Kankanady Hospital (Father Muller Hospital), the Mangaluru seminary, the Church of Most Holy Saviour in Bantwal (Karnataka), and the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Bombay (Mumbai) were some of the immediate beneficiaries. Then, in 1905, came the request from the then-bishop of Cochin for work on the newly constructed cathedral in Fort Kochi. Now, as equally enchanting as Antonios masterpiece in Mangaluru was the storied history of the Cochin cathedral, rendering it impossible for an artist then to overlook a chance to work here. The cathedral was built on the site where a church had stood for centuries, says Rakhi. The original church, built in 1505 during the Portuguese period, was repurposed into an arms storehouse when the Dutch had foothold in Cochin, and was later destroyed when the British took over in 1806. The frescoes that adorn the chapel of St Aloysius College in Mangaluru The present cathedrals construction, she says, began in 1887 and was completed in 1905, a period when the Neo-Gothic style was popular worldwide. The Indo-Gothic architecture twin towers, pointed arches, ribbed vaults and decorative elements must have been a departure from the Kerala-style, Baroque-influenced facades common in Kerala then, she observes. Therefore, Santa Cruz Basilica is one of the rare churches in Kerala, Rakhi adds. Add to this amalgamation the mastery of Antonios artworks, and what you have is indeed a wonder. Sadly, it is not adequately preserved, the parishioners point out. The frescoes that adorn Santa Cruz Basilica in Fort Kochi And no one feels the pain more profoundly than young Lynell de Rozario, whose brother describes her as deeply religious. I have been part of Santa Cruz Basilica my entire life. I have seen the gradual deterioration of the murals and ceiling paintings up close, says Lynell, even amidst a flurry of work tending to the upcoming consecration of a new bishop in Fort Kochi after 25 years. What used to be vibrant and full of detail is now faded, with visible moisture damage and fragile patches that can no longer be ignored. Agnes* (name changed), another parishioner, feels the same. They have done some restorations. But it has come at the cost of these works not looking like historic paintings anymore. They likely painted on top of the original, she says. Unsound and unscientific restoration work taken on the instigation of those who are clearly not experts in the field has been the bane of built heritage in Kerala, points out Biley Menon, co-convenor of the local chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). David concurs. Recently, he and several others had to step in to dissuade a move to redo the cathedrals altar. Finally, it was paused so as not to create needless disturbances during the tourism season. As you know, scores of tourists come to see this church, which has a huge historical and cultural significance, he says. Santa Cruz Basilica; A self-portrait of Antonio Moscheni One of the likely reasons why the frescoes here have remained largely intact for this long despite being so close to the sea and the erratic restoration attempts lies in a secret technique employed by Antonio, reveals Nilabh Sinha, the principal director of INTACH New Delhi and an expert on murals. Apparently, there are two types of fresco work: buono (true fresco) and secco. Secco is the method most commonly used in India. It involved applying dry plaster to the wall and then painting on it with pigments, says Nilabh. Antonios works were done in the true fresco or buono style. The other place you see this kind of work is the Sistine Chapel. Here, the artist prepares a lime-based plaster and paints on it while its still wet. The pigment fuses into the plaster as it dries, forming a permanent bond. Over time, carbonation occurs, creating a protective film over the painting, Nilabh says. This, he adds, ensures the painting remains intact unless the plaster or wall itself is damaged. Antonios work in Mangalurus St Aloysius College was done in the buono method, and given that the Kochi cathedral was also done by him, it is safe to assume that it is a similar method. However, to be sure and a conservation treatment to be designed, a technical study has to be made, Nilabh concludes. The silhouette of Santa Cruz Basilica This is also what a section of the parishioners suggests: regular checks and a complete scientific study. After all, these are not just paintings. They are part of Kochis heritage and cultural landscape, points out a church member. A careful, well-guided restoration, he insists, is essential. Antonio was a man of God. His paintings not only draw the admiration of all who see them, but also raise their hearts and minds to God, says an official of the chapel at St Aloysius College. For Antonio, who now rests in an unmarked grave somewhere in Kochi (sadly, he died four days before the consecration of the church in 1905), what better tribute than to see his final work restored to their due glory. Perhaps when Monsignor Antony Kattiparambil takes charge as the 36th bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cochin on December 7, could his first set of orders also include this?

Aviation growth story piggybacking on foreign travel: AAI report

NEW DELHI: The growing desire for international travel continues to fuel Indias aviation growth story. According to the latest data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the first half of the current financial year, foreign travel has surged by nearly 7% compared to the same period last year. The Air Traffic Report, made public on Wednesday, shows that 3.95 crore passengers travelled abroad from India between April and September 2025, up from 3.69 crore during the same period in 2024. The total Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) arrivals plus departures rose by 2.8%, reaching 15.77 lakh in AprilSeptember 2025 compared to 15.35 lakh last year. Among them, Bagdogra and Coimbatore posted remarkable increases of 51% (13,492 flyers) and 50.5% (1,60,597 flyers), respectively, in AprilSeptember 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Among major airports, both Delhi and Mumbai reported negative growth in domestic travel. The closure of Terminal 2 at IGIA and changes in flight schedules significantly impacted Delhis numbers, which dropped by 5.8% to 2,64,91,445 passengers, compared to 2,81,07,645 last year. Mumbai saw a 0.8% dip, handling 1,91,02,987 passengers.
