SIT recovers part of gold sold by Potti in Ballari

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a major breakthrough in the Sabarimala gold theft case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday recovered more than 400g of gold from a jewellery shop in Karnatakas Ballari. The gold, allegedly sold by first accused Unnikrishnan Potti to local jeweller Govardhanan, was recovered from Roddam Jewellery owned by the latter. The SIT recovered a portion of the gold linked to the theft by tracing its trail to Ballari. According to sources, the gold was allegedly handed over by Potti to Govardhan, who later converted it into gold bars and stored in his jewellery. Potti had allegedly given him 476g of gold. The officials have not yet confirmed whether the entire quantity has been recovered. The SIT had questioned Govardhan on Friday, after finding that Potti had sold gold to him. Govardhan is learnt to have told the SIT that he had no role in the theft and that he was unaware that the gold was acquired through fraudulent means. He allegedly said he first met Unnikrishnan Potti in 2019, when Potti had asked if he could contribute a new temple door. He agreed to it believing it to be an auspicious offer. It is indicated that officials are considering making him a witness in the case after seeking legal advice. Meanwhile, the Roddam Jewellery in Ballari remained closed. A notice with a phone number for customer contact has been pasted on the shops shutter. The store was reportedly closed a few days ago. 25 private buses seized at Attibele for tax evasion

BENGALURU: In a special drive to curb tax evasion by private buses, the Karnataka Transport Department officials seized over 25 buses at Attibele check-post for operating without paying state taxes on Friday morning. The inspection team was led by Additional Transport Commissioner Omkareshwari, and Joint Transport Commissioners Shobha and Gayathri conducted surprise inspections on the outskirts of Bengaluru, which began at 4 am and went on till 10.30 am. Omkareshwari said that over 25 buses were detained at checkpoints near the Karnataka border. These vehicles, registered in other states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, had only paid their home-state taxes, but were operating commercial services in Karnataka without paying the Karnataka State Road Tax. She further explained that while these buses hold All India Tourist Permits (AITP), they were violating permit conditions by picking up individual passengers and functioning like stage carriages, instead of operating as tourist contract carriages. Officials also said the ongoing drive follows similar legal precedents set in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where the respective High Courts directed state transport departments to collect road tax from vehicles registered outside their states, but operating commercially within their territory. The department estimates that the enforcement drive could generate nearly Rs 1 crore fines from the detained vehicles, based on seat and berth calculations. Officials clarified that the detained passengers were not inconvenienced BMTC and private buses were arranged to transport them free of cost to their destinations.

Weather monitoring gets fillip, Doppler radar installation kick-starts in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Marking a major milestone in strengthening weather monitoring in north Kerala, civil works have begun for the installation of an X-band Doppler weather radar (DWR) at Pulpally. The long-pending project gained momentum in the aftermath of the Wayanad landslide, which claimed several lives and highlighted the need for enhanced weather surveillance and early warning systems in the region. IMD director Neetha K Gopal told the TNIE that the foundation work for the radar tower has already begun, and the radar components, supplied by Bharat Electronics Limited, Karnataka, are expected to arrive by the last week of October. The entire facility including the radar tower, radar components and office are pre-fabricated and just need to be installed. The installation process is expected to be completed by November end. Once installed, we will conduct a series of tests, including endurance and calibration tests, to ensure that the radar functions efficiently under all conditions, said Neetha. As part of the endurance test, the radar will operate continuously for around 60 hours to identify and rectify any technical issues. Calibration will follow, including cloud and rainfall correlation studies to ensure data accuracy. Only after completing all tests and the commissioning process will the radar data be made available in public domain, she added. Once operational, the radar will monitor rainfall within a 100-km radius, covering Wayanad and adjoining parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The system, costing `6 crore, will play a crucial role in issuing timely alerts during heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and landslides. The radar, being set up on land provided by Pazhassiraja College, is a joint initiative of the IMD and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). A 30-year lease agreement was signed between IMD, KSDMA, and the college authorities. The new radar will become operational soon. Kicking off the civil work itself is a major milestone. Now our efforts will be to make the system foolproof before it becomes operational, she said. Currently, there are two operational DWRs in Kerala an S-band DWR in Kochi and a C-band DWR at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. However, they cannot provide adequate coverage for the northern districts.

Moms Make it 'Batter': Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is all praises for this mom-run startup

Within the premises of Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) on Bellary Road is a shiny stainless steel capsule that looks like it lost its way out of a science fiction film. You might expect aliens with probes to step out of this UFO on wheels, but what you get is even better a team of moms ready to serve up fresh plates of mane oota (home food) with a touch of mom magic. This is ScCuXe (pronounced Scoo-zee) by Henchu, a cute-looking truck-cafe thats buzzing over social media with investor of SGB Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw recently called it an innovative startup created by moms as a food lab on platform X. Ive been cooking for 35 years, and my children always said theres so much love, affection and energy in your cooking. Why dont you start something like that? says Gayathri Mruthyunjaya, the 63-year-old force behind this venture, which started in early August this year, recalling the suggestion that kicked off her cafe. Collaborating with her son, Karthik Aradhya M, she brought together a team of 10 mothers and two men to make this dream a reality. There are so many other women who have this hidden talent in cooking, and according to me, cooking is an art, she adds. Her team of mothers is made up of close friends and relatives aged 32 and above, each with their own expertise, and Mruthyunjayas mission is to let each one shine. A new lunch menu each day, featuring traditional food from Karnataka, is how she does it. One mother makes holige, the other mother makes dosae well, another makes pulav well, and yet another makes gojju avalakki. Each mother gets the opportunity to present their dishes, she says. Apart from traditional Karnataka fare, they also serve up delicious homemade cakes, buns, and a few North Indian dishes. With the cafe finding a home on the campus, the menu priced from `20 onwards is not just about taste and heritage but also health and nutrition. As Aradhya explains, ScCuXe stands for science, culture and experiment. And this aligns with the way mothers make our food intuitively, and how the science gallerys Calorie exhibit functions too, revolving around food culture. Mruthyunjaya adds, When moms make any food, we try to make it with the right proportion of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fibre so that its a balanced meal. We do this at home, but here, we are more conscious of it. This is one of the reasons Jahnavi Phalkey, the gallerys director, was drawn to and has grown fond of the place. She says, Our mission is to bring science back into culture. We want people to make considered and informed choices in every aspect of their lives, from careers to the food they eat. Henchu stood out for us because of their commitment to local cuisine, appropriate scale, and the experimental nature of their work: almost a start-up run by a mother-son duo. We have been proved right by the enthusiasm generated around their offering. Her favourite? A classic Karnataka meal that she says is healthy, tasty and something you will not find in a restaurant jowar roti, brinjals, greens, jhunka, salad, buttermilk and so on. With all the attention following a few popular Instagram reels and now Mazumdar-Shaws praise, Mruthyunjaya says she is truly blessed. When you cook at home, our children say its good, and thats it. But when we present the food to others and they say so, it was a great surprise. An unexpected outcome has come from this, too, Mruthyunjaya says, Many ladies have started messaging us on social media saying they have a passion for cooking and want to join. So we want to make a big team! Aradhya fondly concludes, The vision is to take our home-cooked food to the world.

Traditions & Folklore

This is a time when traditions come to the fore. The season is rife with pujas, parties and pretentiousness. Of course, the truly elegant mix tradition with festivities, family and friends-like-family. They come home to greet, meet and play some fun card games. I think I was born old! I really felt bored at big Deepavali bashes and by 10pm I was ready to call it a night like a true-blue party-pooper. Whereas, my sister loves the Deepavali night celebrations (mostly thrown in her massive home) with music, bar-tenders, dancing and the works. Invariably, the men-in-brown would stop by, pick up some gratuity and move on. No one was none the wiser and the Deepavali-cheer went about being just thatcheerful. This year, my birthday and the Deepavali dhamakas more or less coincided with each other. My daughter and her family (plus nanny) were all down from Mumbai after a long time. I was delirious with joy. I couldnt have asked for more! A big contingent of my sisters family and mine celebrated a raucous birthday lunch in the private dining area of Royal China (a fave place even in Mumbai to dine in), where we bumped into half the pretties of Bangalore. We had ourselves a great time, and as a mother, glamma, sister, and wife, I couldnt be more complete. My munchkin, all of three and a full-fledged threenager was with me for a glorious ten days. I wanted to pack every experience into those days. Show her who her glamma was as a person, the aquarium, the train-park, the older side of Bangalore, the traditions of doing the rituals at home, how to draw rangoli, the meaning and story behind the festival and I even managed to show her the Kole Basava, an old folk practice in Karnataka when a highly-decorated bull accompanied by gypsies or nomads blesses people in exchange for alms. This will probably be an extinct art form by the time she grows up and I wanted her to have memories of her nanis home like we all have. My fortnight has flown by in a meaningful blur where we only met and interacted with close friends and family. No shoo and no shaa and no social media hype. Having been through the whole roller coaster for the last two decades, I dont sit in judgment, but I know I never ever let all the outside noise take precedence over family. Susan Fernandes Speaking of family, my bondhu, the masterchef Abhijit Saha and his lovely wife Shruti, opened up a beautiful and intimate Neapolitan pizzeria and trattoria at Carlton Towers, called Rosmarino. We sat on charming tables outside, and gorged on genuine wood-fired oven pizzas, devilled prawns, cannelloni, and other Puglia inspired delicacies. I could only wonder how life has taken a full circle. I first met chef Saha when he opened up the first Italian restaurant at The Park Hotel over two decades ago. We became fast friends and I was awe-struck at how many ardent fans he has who have followed his culinary journey from Italia, Caperberry, Fava and now Rosmarino! Viva chef Saha! Susan Fernandes turned a milestone birthday into a crazy party with aplomb. One of the OG families from Bangalore, her party was full of song, great food and everlasting love. Never play a clown in someone elses circusIYKYK! (The writers views are personal)
