Our favorite books we read in 2025

This was the kind of year that felt 100 years long, so who could blame us for leaning into a bit of escapism? Some of us buried our noses in books in 2025, and thankfully, there were plenty of good reads to get lost in. Here are some of the Engadget teams top picks from the year. Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy Wild Dark Shore pulls off a magnificent balancing act of telling an intimate, personal story coupled with the backdrop of impending climate disaster. A father and two children are living on a remote island near Antarctica, taking care of a vast seed bank that was part of an abandoned research facility. Theyre literally trying to stay above water for a few months until they get bailed out from the island along with as much of the seed bank as they can save before it goes under when a woman named Rowan washes up on shore. She survives, is nursed back to health, and starts forming bonds with her rescuers and their mission but at the same time, she has some unexpected connections to the island and the former research team that lived there that she keeps to herself. The magic of this book is in the way Charlotte McConaghy builds tensions from many sources throughout the book; you feel a lingering sense of discomfort through, waiting for the other shoe to fall even as Rowan gets closer and closer to the family. Its a small-scale story at its heart, but with the backdrop of disaster looming the stakes feel extremely high. And McConaghy is a master at putting these feelings on the page in gorgeous prose. As she showed in her previous work Migrations , she has a real talent for realistically describing near-future climate disasters, but Wild Dark Shore raises the personal stakes in a visceral way. Nathan Ingraham, Deputy Editor Moonflow by Bitter Karella This book is a chaotic and deeply weird rollercoaster ride that repeatedly gave me whiplash, and I loved it. Fair warning, it's not for the weak-stomached. It is horrifying, hilarious, nauseating and somehow a very good time and a very bad time simultaneously. Moonflow is told through dual narratives, one following Sarah, a trans woman and mushroom dealer who has found herself in a desperate situation, and the other following the henchwomen of a deranged cult that's made its home in a cursed forest. After Sarah ventures into these woods in search of the King's Breakfast, a rare mushroom said to grant divine understanding to those who consume it, all hell breaks loose. Karella's writing is immersive, and this is the kind of book you can see, feel, hear and smell, for better and worse. Every person in this book is like a caricature of someone I've crossed paths with at some point in life, and the names of the cult members are just chef's kiss . Some of them had me howling. It is completely unpredictable except in those few moments where it seems the author wants you to know exactly where things are going just to make you dread the inevitable. Reading Moonflow was a visceral, unforgettable experience. Cheyenne MacDonald, Weekend Editor Simplicity by Mattie Lubchansky Another one about a cult, except this cult rules. I picked up Simplicity knowing nothing about it except that everyone cool on the internet seemed to be praising it, and was excited to discover that it's set near where I live in New York's Hudson Valley, in a future version of the Catskills. And here in the Hudson Valley, it often feels like I'm one or two innocuous decisions away from accidentally joining a cult, so there was an immediate connection. In Simplicity , it's the year 2081 and New York City is a high-tech dystopia run by a billionaire. North of the city, though, various communities have settled off-grid, including a group called The Spiritual Association of Peers. Lucius Pasternak, a trans man, is sent on an anthropological assignment from the mayor to SAP's compound, Simplicity, and it doesn't take long for their uninhibited way of life to start growing on him. But Lucius soon begins to have strange dreams, and a series of violent attacks shakes up the community. Through his mission to understand the people of SAP and later to find and stop the entity that's targeting them, a beautiful story about queerness and identity and belonging and fighting for what's important unfolds. This feels like the kind of book that should be passed around between friends who just get it , and I imagine many readers will feel incredibly seen by it like I did. C.M. The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones Or Stephen Graham Jones' Interview with the Vampire. The Buffalo Hunter Hunter blends historical fiction and horror to give us one of the most impactful vampire novels of our time one that serves as an uncomfortable but necessary reminder of the atrocities committed against indigenous people in the US by white settlers. It begins with the discovery of a crumbling journal that claims to contain the confession of a Blackfeet man-turned-vampire named Good Stab, as told to Lutheran pastor Arthur Beaucarne. What follows is a gutting chronicle of slaughter, heartbreak and revenge. It's a classic in the making. C.M. Isola by Allegra Goodman Historical fiction is how I trick my brain into possibly learning something. And because the endings are set, the author has to hook you into the drama with more than just the peril of an unknown outcome. I fell deep into Wolf Hall even though I knew which heads Henry VIII chopped off. I thought Isola might be similarly gratifying. It tells the story of Marguerite de la Rocque de Roberval, a young noblewoman from France who was intentionally marooned on an island off the coast of Canada in 1542. The story is based on historical records so you know the plot wont adhere to safe formulas , but mon dieu , I was not prepared for how rough things would be for Marguerite. Her troubles began long before she found herself fighting for survival on a wild uninhabited island with brutal winters. From birth, nearly every happiness was undercut by more dominant forces, yet the woman never stopped moving forward. Thankfully, Goodman draws Marguerites character not as some tired brand of plucky heroine with grit and a wink, but as a perceptive, pragmatic being who also gives in to impulse and doesnt have everything figured out. Isola is beautifully rendered, from the stone chateaus to creaking ships and rough abundance of the island. Despite being set over 400 years ago, nothing feels dated. Human versus universe is an unfair battle, but I rooted for Marguerite on every page and those pages turned quickly. Amy Skorheim, Senior Reporter, Buying Advice Old Soul by Susan Barker This was one of the first books I read this year, and it's really stuck with me. Old Soul travels through time and all over the world, across multiple storylines to trace the devastating impact of one mysterious woman who seems to defy the rules of mortality and always leave tragedy in her wake. Barker's writing in Old Soul pulls the reader in and doesn't let go. It's an unsettling slow burn that did a great job of getting under my skin. C.M. Meet Me at the Crossroads by Megan Giddings If a door appeared out of nowhere, would you go through it not knowing what lies beyond or if you'd be able to return? In Meet Me at the Crossroads , seven doors pop up one day around the world, and people are unsurprisingly captivated by them. Regular people tempt fate, the ultra-wealthy plan exclusive excursions through them, religions form around their mystique. Ayanna is a teenager who was brought up in one of these religions. She's also a twin, with a sister named Olivia who she's been separated from after their parents' split. When it comes time for Ayanna to go through one of the doors as part of a ceremony, Olivia makes a last-second decision to go with her. What follows is the aftermath of that decision. Meet Me at the Crossroads is a haunting and emotional journey. C.M. Woodworking by Emily St. James I am cisgender, white middle-aged man, so the experience of learning and accepting a different gender identity is something I will never fully understand. But Woodworking, the debut novel by Emily St. James, is a hilarious, tragic and ultimatley hopeful look at two trans women navigating different moments of acceptance in their lives. Erica is a mid-30s high school teacher who is recently divorced and just figuring out that shes trans, something no one else knows about her at the start. Her student, 17-year-old Abigail, is her opposite: proudly out about her identity in a way thats uncommon and dangerous in her small, conversative town in South Dakota. Their paths intersect, and Abigail ends up in the uncomfortable and somewhat unethical role of helping Erica find herself. After all shes confident and not afraid of who she is but shes also still a teenager, one dealing with massive trauma of her own. The dual look into these two protagonists, each with sections of the book narrated from their own points of view, gave me a vivid picture of the different challlenges, emotions and dangers trans people face. But the unexpected community that develops around both characters plainly shows the value of living as your true self in a way that (hopefully) anyone should be able to relate to. N.I. ISRO's heaviest rocket LVM3-M6 places US communication satellite into low earth orbit

SRIHARIKOTA: In a historic Christmas Eve mission, ISRO's heaviest rocket, LVM3-M6, successfully placed a US communication satellite into orbit on Wednesday. The Bengaluru-headquartered space agency said the LVM3-M6 has successfully placed the BlueBird Block-2 satellite into its intended orbit. The Bluebird Block-2 mission is part of a global LEO (Low Earth Orbit) constellation to provide direct-to-mobile connectivity through satellite. This constellation would enable 4G and 5G voice and video calls, texts, streaming and data for everyone, everywhere at all times. LVM3-M6 carried the communication satellite as part of a commercial deal between NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) and US-based AST SpaceMobile (AST and Science, LLC). NewSpace India is the commercial arm of the ISRO. The 43.5 metre tall rocket soared majestically at 8.54 am from the second launch pad here on Wednesday. After a flight journey of about 15 minutes, the spacecraft Bluebird Block-2 got separated from the vehicle and it was successfully placed into orbit. Weighing 6,100 kg, the communication satellite would be the heaviest payload to be placed into the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in LVM3 launch history from Indian soil, the space agency said. The previous heaviest was the LVM3-M5 Communication Satellite 03, weighing about 4,400 kg that was successfully launched by ISRO on November 2 in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The mission is aimed at deploying the next-generation communication satellite designed to provide high-speed cellular broadband directly to smartphones. AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only space-based cellular broadbank network, which is accessible directly by smartphones and designed for both commercial and government applications. The LVM3-M6 also known as the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-MkIII) is a three stage rocket with a cryogenic engine designed and developed by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. The vehicle uses two S200 solid rocket boosters to provide the huge amount of thrust required for lift off. The booster has been developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. According to AST SpaceMobile, it has launched five satellites, Bluebird 1-5 in September 2024, which provide continuous coverage across the United States and other select countries. The company has planned to launch similar satellites to augment its network support and has partnered with over 50 mobile operators across the globe. The LVM3-M6 is the sixth operational flight of LVM3 and third dedicated commercial mission to launch the Bluebird Block-2 spacecraft. The LVM3 has a spectacular pedigree of completing eight consecutive successful launches including the ambitious Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3 missions, ISRO said.

The operation was conducted under strict scientific protocols, tight security, and multi-level coordination between agencies. The three-year-old tigress, identified as PN-224, arrived at Jaipur Airport on Sunday night around 10:30 pm aboard an Indian Army MI-17 helicopter. She was subsequently transported by road to Bundi and released into a special enclosure at around 6:30 am on Monday. The operation began on Sunday morning in the Pench Tiger Reserve, where the tigress was located hiding under trees in a dense forest. A team of veterinary doctors successfully tranquilised her, following which a detailed medical examination was conducted. Officials said her body temperature, heartbeat and respiration rate were found to be completely normal. After about an hour of medical and technical procedures, the tigress was airlifted at 4:55 pm. Owing to security considerations, she was flown directly to Jaipur instead of Bundi. Following a two-and-a-half-hour flight, she reached Jaipur and was moved in a specially designed cage vehicle to Ramgarh Vishdhari. The Tigress has been placed in the Bajaliya enclosure of the reserve, where she will remain under constant observation. Preparations for the translocation had been underway for several weeks. Chief Conservator of Forests Suganaram Jat and senior veterinary expert Dr Tejendra Riyad from Kota reached Pench on November 25. On December 5, the tigress was tranquilised and fitted with a radio collar. Wildlife experts said the translocation is crucial to prevent inbreeding, which often occurs when tiger populations remain confined to a limited area for long periods. She was initially scheduled to be brought to Ramgarh Vishdhari on December 10. However, the radio collar broke on December 6, creating difficulties in tracking her and stalling the operation. The original plan was to fly the tigress directly from Pench to Ramgarh Vishdhari. A helipad was constructed at Ramgarh, and helicopter trial runs were conducted over two days. However, permission from the Air Force was denied on security grounds. Sources said that the security personnel present during the trials differed from those deployed in Pench, and a different helicopter model was used. Considering the risks, authorities revised the plan and routed the transfer through Jaipur. Wildlife experts said the translocation is crucial to prevent inbreeding, which often occurs when tiger populations remain confined to a limited area for long periods. Inbreeding can lead to congenital diseases, reduced immunity, lower fertility, and physical deformities in future generations. The introduction of a new tigress will strengthen the gene pool and help ensure a healthier and more resilient tiger population in Ramgarh Vishdhari in the long term, an expert said. The tigress has been released into a specially developed one-hectare enclosure in the Bajaliya area of the reserve. She has been fitted with a radio collar, and her movements will be continuously monitored using AI-based camera traps and sensor systems. A Forest Department team camped in the Pench Tiger Reserve for nearly two weeks to track the tigress, conduct health checks, and complete the necessary procedures. At one stage, after the radio collar was removed, the tigress retreated deep into the forest, further delaying the mission. Eventually, with the help of trained elephants, officials managed to tranquilise her again. Despite posing significant challenges to forest teams from both states, the operation concluded successfully, marking a major milestone in Rajasthans tiger conservation efforts.

ISRO to launch BlueBird-6 on December 24

BENGALURU: One of the biggest commercial communication satellites, developed by the United States, BlueBird-6, will be launched on December 24, 2025, by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at 8.54 am. After multiple delays and prolonged wait, ISRO on Friday took to the social media platform X to announce the launch date. The satellite will be launched from ISROs Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM-3) rocket, which is popularly called as Bahubali. The low Earth Orbit satellite will be launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the second launch pad. Earlier, AST SpaceMobile, a Texas-based company that developed the satellite, had announced the launch for December 15, 2025, and then it was postponed to December 21, 2025 and now to December 24. The satellite was transported to India from the US on October 19. It was later transported by road to Sriharikotta for further integration, fueling, testing and launch. The satellite launch is the first commercial venture of ISRO being handled by New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO. The aim is to earn revenue for the government through contracts and partnerships. According to AST SpaceMobiles team, this is the next-generation satellite and represents a 3.5 times increase in size compared to other BlueBirds 1-5 and supports ten times the data capacity. The aim of the launch of the satellite is to provide direct-to-device mobile broadband connectivity, fast and unhindered communication. It is also aimed to bridge the digital gap of poor terrestrial networks and to cover connected parts of the globe. It is also slated to carry the largest phased array of antennas to orbit. The ISRO officials said that the delay in announcing the launch date was due to prolonged pre-launching activities and the required tests. The officials said special attention had been made as the project will impact the communication and data centres across the globe, if there were any errors. The launch pad and vehicle also needed to be tested as this commercial partnership, showing Indias capability. As per ISRO data, the BlueBird-6 satellite launch is the second broadband customer to fly on LVM3 after Eutelsat OneWeb. The LVM-3, on November 2, had put Indias heaviest satellite-CMS-03, weighing 4.4 tonnes, in space.

Vadodara collectorate receives hoax bomb threat email

AHMEDABAD: Vadodara collectorate received a bomb threat email on Thursday morning, warning that the building would be blown up if it was not evacuated by 1 pm, instantly pushing the citys security grid into emergency mode. Upon receiving information, the special operations group of Akota Police, Vadodara Crime Branch, bomb and dog Squads rushed to the spot and sealed off the Collectors Office and halted public entry. They jointly conducted a search for nearly three hours, but no suspicious or objectionable item was found. Deputy Commissioner of Police Manjita Vanzara said, All police teams reached the Collectors Office immediately after the threatening mail was received, and thorough checks were carried out both inside and outside the premises, but no suspicious or objectionable item was found. Following the all-clear, routine work at the Collectors Office resumed. However, authorities remained on alert, with police continuing surveillance in and around the premises to rule out any delayed or secondary threat. The threat comes a day after several schools in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kalol and other locations receive d similar bomb threats. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vanzara on Thursday said police are examining whether the bomb threat issued to the Vadodara Collectors Office is linked to the series of hoax bomb emails sent to schools a day earlier. Confirming the probe, Vanzara said, An investigation is underway to check any connection with the mails received in Ahmedabad yesterday. Police are analysing similarities in the threats, including timing patterns, to determine if they originated from a single source. Investigators have noted that the school bomb threats on December 18 were received around 1.11 pm, while the email threatening the Vadodara Collectors Office arrived at around 1 pm on Thursday. The close timing has heightened suspicion that the sender may be attempting to test the states security response by triggering calculated panic across locations. Officials also recalled that a similar threatening letter had surfaced in Vadodara a few months ago, targeting a reputed school, a private company and the Collectors Office. That incident, too, ended without the recovery of any explosive material. Despite repeated hoaxes yielding no physical threat so far, police said the alerts are being taken seriously. Authorities stressed that every threat will be treated as genuine, with cyber teams tracing digital footprints and analysing email trails to identify those responsible for the latest wave of bomb scare messages in Gujarat.

Four youths killed as speeding car mows down helpers at ChittorgarhKota highway crash site

JAIPUR: Four people lost their lives and three others were critically injured after being hit by a speeding car while they were helping a couple injured in an earlier road accident. The double accident took place on the ChittorgarhKota highway. According to reports, a car coming from the wrong side of the road first hit a couple, Shambhu Lal and his wife Kali Bai, who were riding a motorcycle near Mandana village. The same car then collided with another vehicle. Hearing the sound of the crash, people sitting at a nearby roadside eatery and the occupants of another car rushed to the spot to help the injured. At that moment, a speeding Eeco car travelling from Chittorgarh towards Kota ran over the people who had gathered to help. Immediately after this, three to four more vehicles collided from behind, leading to chaos at the accident site. Two people died on the spot, while a total of 12 others sustained injuries. All the injured were given first aid in Begun and later referred to hospitals in Chittorgarh, Kota, and Udaipur. Cheetah cub killed by speeding car hit as Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradeshs cheetah population suffered a second blow in three days after a 20-month-old male cub born to South African cheetah Gamini was fatally hit by a speeding car in Gwalior districts Ghatigaon area early Sunday. The incident occurred around 6.30 am when the two cubs were crossing National Highway-46 near the Ghatigaon forests. According to an official statement from the field director of the Cheetah Project, A speeding vehicle (car) struck one of the cubs, killing it instantly. The cheetah tracking team and the local forest staff were continuously monitoring both cubs. The accident happened suddenly even as the tracking team attempted to stop the speeding vehicle from hitting the cheetah. The vehicle suspected to have caused the collision was traced hours later in Rajasthans Kota district, and a forest offence case has been registered. Officials at Kuno National Park (KNP) said the second cub is safe, though its exact location has not been disclosed yet. This is the first recorded death of a cheetahadult or cub due to a vehicle strike since the Cheetah Project began in September 2022 with the arrival of eight Namibian cheetahs. Sundays death comes just two days after a 10-month-old cub of South African female Veera was found dead in the KNP forests on December 5, a day after it was released into the wild with its mother and sibling. The cub is believed to have been separated from them the same night and is suspected to have died after falling and colliding with rocks near a hillock. The cub killed on Sunday had been roaming freely since March 17, 2025, when Gamini and her four cubs were released into the open forests of the Khajuri area. With the loss of both cubs aged 10 months and 20 months, the cheetah count inside KNP now stands at 27, including 19 cubs and eight adults. Three more adult cheetahs housed at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary bring the total in Madhya Pradesh to 30. Reacting to the twin deaths, Bhopal-based wildlife activist Ajay Dubey said, The unnatural death streak of cheetahs continues in Madhya Pradesh. A cheetah was run over by a vehicle in the Gwalior district. The MP government has failed to fix responsibility for the criminal negligence.

Ayodhya Ram Temple flag hoisting marks spiritual resurgence of India, says UP CM Yogi

LUCKNOW: Adityanath said the completion of the Ayodhya Ram Temple construction was not the end of a yajna but the addition of another chapter in the spiritual history of the country. While welcoming the dignitaries, including PM Narendra Modi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and others, the UP CM emphasised that the grand temple of Lord Shri Ram reflected the faith, honour, and self-respect of 1.4 billion Indians. PM Modi, prior to raising the flag on top of the flagpole constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagara architectural style, visited all other temples on the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi premises. The surrounding 800-metre Parkota, a circumambulatory enclosure built around the temple in the South Indian architectural tradition, reflects the temple's architectural diversity. He offered prayers at the temples of Maharshi Vashishtha, Maharshi Vishwamitra, Maharshi Agastya, Maharshi Valmiki, Devi Ahilya, Nishadraj Guha and Mata Shabari. He also visited the Sheshavtar Mandir and offered puja at Mata Annapurna Mandir. The PM also took darshan and pooja at Ram Darbar Garbh Grah followed by darshan at Ram Lalla Garbha Grah. Yogi, extending heartfelt congratulations to the karmayogis whose dedication made the construction of the temple possible in such a short duration, recalled centuries-long struggle saying: Although dynasties and generations changed over time, unwavering faith remained constant. It may be recalled that after the Supreme Courts order settling the vexed Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute on November 9, 2019, PM Modi had laid the foundation of the temple on August 5, 2020 following which temple construction commenced. The temple was opened for people with the consecration of Ram Lalla in sanctum sanctorum of the temple in a glittering ceremony on January 22, 2024. CM Yogi Adityanath dedicated the momentous day to the saints, devotees, and warriors of temple movement who sacrificed their lives to see the temple in Ayodhya. He said: Ayodhya has entered a new era, one that harmonizes heritage with modernity. With improved infrastructure, including the 84 Kosi Parikrama, Dharmapath, Rampath, Bhaktipath, and Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya is transforming into a global centre of faith, culture, and sustainable development. Today, it stands as Indias first solar and sustainable smart city, a symbol of national pride and spiritual resurgence. He said that raising the flag on top of the temple reflected the eternal light of righteousness and the timeless ideals of Ram Rajya. Yogi said: When Prime Minister Modi assumed office in 2014, a new spirit of possibility and determination was rekindled across India. The long-awaited dream of millions has now been realized in the form of a magnificent temple, an embodiment of devotion and perseverance. The saffron flag flying high above the temple signifies faith, dignity, truth, justice, nationalism, and the aspiration for a Viksit Bharat. Highlighting the nations progress, he said that Indias transformation over the last 11 years had been remarkable. Development and heritage were moving hand in hand, enabling the country to rise to new heights. 'Centuries-old wounds are healing', says PM Modi after hoisting saffron flag at Ayodhya Ram temple

PM Modi to hoist Dharam Dhwaja as Ayodhya Ram temple construction reaches completion

Lucknow: Preparations for the Dhwajaarohan (flag-hoisting) ceremony on the spire of the Ram temple have reached their final stage, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to return to Ayodhya after 22 months. The event marks the formal completion of the temples construction, nearly two years after the consecration of Ram Lalla in the sanctum sanctorum, which the PM presided over on 22 January 2024. The PM will hoist the saffron flag, the Dharam Dhwaja , atop the temple spire on Tuesday. The right-angled triangular flag, measuring 11 feet in height and 22 feet in length, bears the image of a radiant Sun symbolising the brilliance and valour of Lord Rama, with an Om inscribed on it along with the image of a Kovidara tree. The temple trust said the sacred saffron flag would convey a message of dignity, unity and cultural continuity, embodying the ideals of Ram Rajya. The flag will rise atop a shikhar (spire) constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagara architectural style, while the surrounding 800-metre Parkota, a circumambulatory enclosure built around the temple, has been designed in the South Indian architectural tradition, showcasing architectural diversity. During his stay in Ayodhya, the PM is expected to visit other temples dedicated to Maharshi Vashishtha, Maharshi Vishwamitra, Maharshi Agastya, Maharshi Valmiki, Devi Ahilya, Nishadraj Guha and Mata Shabari, constructed on the premises of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi after the consecration. He will also visit the Sheshavtar Mandir. The PM will additionally visit Mata Annapurna Mandir and perform darshan and pooja at Ram Darbar Garbha Grah, followed by darshan at Ram Lalla Garbha Grah. According to temple trust sources, at around noon the PM will ceremonially hoist the saffron flag on the shikhar of the temple, after which he is likely to address the gathering. As per the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the flag-hoisting event falls on the auspicious Panchami date of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Margashirsha, coinciding with the Abhijit Muhurat of Shri Ram and Goddess Sitas Vivah Panchami (wedding date), a day symbolising divine union. On the eve of the ceremony, Ayodhya wore a festive look as dignitaries and devotees began arriving to witness the event. The ceremonial flag to be raised on the temple spire has already reached the birthplace site. Security around the Ram Janmabhoomi complex and adjoining areas has been heightened. Surveillance is being carried out by helicopter, and ATS commandos have cordoned off the temple premises. Personnel from the SPG, CRPF and PAC have also been deployed, forming a five-layer security arrangement. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived in Ayodhya on Monday. While the CM reviewed the preparations for the grand ceremony, which is likely to be attended by around 6,000 guests, the RSS chief is among the dignitaries invited for the occasion. Sources said more than a hundred major donors who contributed over Rs 2 crore towards the construction of the Ram Mandir have been invited. However, the Shankaracharyas have not been invited. The temple trust has appealed to the public not to visit Ayodhya for Ram Lallas darshan on 25 November. Entry of all heavy vehicles such as trucks and tractors was stopped from entering Ayodhya from 11 pm on 23 November, a restriction that will remain in place until midnight on 26 November. However, the movement of residents has allegedly been hampered due to the unprecedented security arrangements, especially following the recent Delhi terror blast. Routes through which the PMs cavalcade will move have been sensitised and closed to locals. To retain the festivity and fervour during the PMs movement from Saket Degree College to the Ram temple, the local administration has roped in 5,000 women to give musical performances and shower petals on the convoy. Meanwhile, all streets and by-lanes leading to Ram Path have been barricaded and guarded, and no pedestrian movement will be allowed towards the temple, as was the case earlier.

Parliamentary panel reviews coaching centres; AI impact, higher education reforms amid student stress

NEW DELHI: Amid rising student suicides due to stress, a parliamentary committee has decided to review the proliferation of coaching centres to support students in competitive examinations and the social issues arising from it. The Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports will also examine the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the leverage of emerging technology on education and students. According to a recent Lok Sabha bulletin, the standing committee has also decided the review of PM Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) during the year 2025-26. The panel will review the proliferation of coaching centres to support students in competitive examinations, social issues arising from it and existing legislation on the matter, the bulletin said. There have been cases of students enrolled in coaching institutes ending their lives in recent years due to study pressure, with several cases reported in Rajasthan's Kota city alone, which is known as the coaching capital of India. The Ministry of Education had earlier this year set up a nine-member panel to examine issues relating to coaching and the emergence of dummy schools besides the effectiveness and fairness of entrance examinations. The panel is studying the effectiveness and fairness of competitive entrance examinations in the context of the school education system and their influence on the growth of the coaching industry. During the year, the parliamentary panel will also examine the current practices and policies regarding school closure. According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the committee will also review the functioning and performance of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) as also efforts to promote education of linguistic and religious minorities. The panel will also seek details on the Education Ministry's efforts to create a Higher Education Council of India (HECI). A bill to set up a higher education regulator, which will replace bodies such as the UGC, is listed for introduction in the Winter session of Parliament, set to commence on December 1. The HECI which was proposed in the new National Education Policy, looks to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). While the UGC oversees non-technical higher education, the AICTE oversees technical education, and the NCTE is the regulatory body for teachers' education. The parliamentary panel will also review study of Indological academic traditions and its impact on current education system.
