We're not afraid of ED or Modi: Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin
CHENNAI: Amid the buzz, despite the Supreme Court relief, that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probing the Rs 1000 crore liquor scam in Tamil Nadu is actually gunning for him and his close associates, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Saturday said that DMK was not afraid of the ED raids or Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party would face the cases legally, he told reporters in Pudukkotai. Udhayanidhi was quoted as saying by the PTI that the DMK dispensation would continue to raise its voice for state's rights and would not be cowed down by any intimidation. We're not afraid of ED or Modi, Udhayanidhi quipped. The DMK nurtured by Kalaignar (his grandfather and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi), is a party with self-respect firmly moored to the principles of Periyar (rationalist leader E V Ramasamy), Udhayanidhi said. Responding to a question on the opposition AIADMK accusing Chief Minister M K Stalin of rushing to the national capital to attend the Niti Aayog's Governing Council meeting today in the wake of ED searches on the offices of state-owned enterprise TASMAC--he had skipped the meeting last year--Udhayanidhi replied that the Chief Minister had gone to attend the meeting to obtain funds for Tamil Nadu. They (BJP government at the Centre) tried to intimidate us in the past but we refused to yield. Our's is not a party with a servitude mindset. We will face the cases legally, the Deputy Chief Minister said. The regional media has been reporting that the ED raids were actually eyeing Udhayanidhi and his associates in the Tasmac (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation) scam. With elections scheduled for the state next year, the ruling party is also facing anti-incumbency. The developments such as the AIADMK settling for an alliance with the BJP comes as a fresh challenge for the DMK. However, in a huge relief for the ruling party, the Supreme Court on May 22, stayed the ED investigation and raids in connection with the liquor scam and the Chief Justice of India BR Gavai went on to slam the ED for crossing all limits.

220 million-year-old fossils found in Telangana give fresh insights into dinosaur evolution
HYDERABAD: Fossils found near Annaram village in the Pranahita-Godavari Valley have led to the identification of a new dinosaur species, Maleriraptor kuttyi. The bipedal predator lived over 200 million years ago during the Norian stage of the Late Triassic period. Originally excavated in the 1980s, the remains were analysed and recently described in the journal Royal Society Open Science. The study places Maleriraptor kuttyi within the early dinosaur group Herrerasauria, but outside the South American subgroup Herrerasauridae. It is the first confirmed evidence of a herrerasaurian dinosaur from Gondwana, which included present-day India. It expands the known range of this group beyond South America. All previously confirmed species were found in Argentina and Brazil. The fossil is catalogued as ISIR 282. Notable features include a vertically oriented pubis and a distinct pelvic structure. Unlike other herrerasaurians, it lacks the broad pubic boot, suggesting a separate evolutionary path. The species name honours the late Indian palaeontologist TS Kutty, who discovered the fossil. The genus name, Maleriraptor, refers to the Upper Maleri Formation, where it was found, and the Latin word for thief, indicating its carnivorous nature. Godavari belt known for fossil record Maleriraptor kuttyi is estimated to have ranged from 1.2 to 6 metres in length. Its identification offers further insight into the dispersal and adaptation of early dinosaurs, particularly during a time of ecological transition marked by the decline of herbivores such as rhynchosaurs. Although other possible herrerasaurians have been reported from North America, their classification remains uncertain. This find confirms that herrerasaurians had dispersed across multiple continents earlier than previously recorded. Palaeoclimate data suggests that India during the Late Triassic had environmental similarities to present-day southwestern North America, possibly contributing to parallel evolution across Pangaea. The absence of comparable fossils in contemporary South American sites indicates environmental factors may have influenced their distribution. The Pranahita-Godavari Valley, located across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, is known for its extensive fossil record. Notable finds include Kotasaurus yamanpalliensis, Barapasaurus tagorei, Dandakosaurus indicus, Alwalkeria maleriensis, and Jaklapallisaurus asymmetrica, representing various stages of the Triassic and Jurassic periods.

Countdown begins for ISRO's PSLV-C61 mission launch carrying earth observation satellite
SRIHARIKOTA: The 22-hour countdown for the launch of an earth imaging satellite on-board a PSLV rocket commenced here on Saturday, ISRO sources said. The lift-off for the PSLV-C61 is scheduled to take place at 5.59 am from the first launch pad at this space port on May 18, which is also the 101st mission for the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency. The countdown started by 7.59 am on Saturday. Total 22 hours countdown, sources told PTI. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in its 63rd mission, would carry the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-09), which would be capable of capturing high-resolution images of the Earth's surface under all weather conditions. The round-the-clock imaging by the satellite is vital for applications like agriculture, forestry monitoring, disaster management, urban planning and national security. Weighing around 1,696.24 kg, the EOS-09 satellite would join the constellation of Earth Observation satellites, aimed at addressing the need for expanded real-time coverage across the country's vast territory. The EOS-09 (RISAT-1B) is a follow-on to the RISAT-1 satellite which is equipped with similar configuration. It complements and supplements data from the Resourcesat, Cartosat and RISAT-2B Series satellites. The Earth Observation Satellite-09 is a repeat satellite of EOS-04 launched in 2022. It has been designed with the mission objective to ensure remote sensing data for the user community engaged in operational applications and to improve the frequency of observation. The PSLV-C61 rocket, after a 17 minute journey, is expected to place the EOS-09 satellite into the Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO). Scientists, after the satellite gets separated in the desired orbit, would use the Orbit Change Thrusters (OCT) on the vehicle to reduce the altitude of the orbit, later. The mission life of EOS-09 is 5 years, ISRO said. According to scientists, a sufficient amount of the fuel has been reserved for de-orbiting the satellite after its effective mission life by lowering it to an orbit that ensures its decay within two years, towards ensuring a debris-free mission.
