Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan Launches Anti-Cannabis Campaign in Tribal Region
Visakhapatnam: Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan addressed the critical issue of cannabis proliferation during his visit to Bhalagarulu village in Alluri Sitarama Raju district. The address was part of a review of the implementation of government schemes in the region. Speaking at the Pinakota Panchayat gathering, Pawan Kalyan expressed grave concern over the increasing cannabis addiction among youth. The widespread availability of cannabis is ruining young lives and fostering criminal behaviour in our society, he stated. The Deputy CM emphasised that the lure of quick money has led many individuals into the illegal drug trade, often resulting in imprisonment. To tackle this crisis, the ASR District Police has launched Swachh Sankalpam, a comprehensive anti-drug awareness campaign. This initiative employs advanced technology, including drone cameras, to locate and destroy cannabis plantations. Additionally, the programme provides farmers with alternative crop seeds, encouraging them to abandon cannabis cultivation. The campaign adopts a holistic approach, focusing on rehabilitation and prevention. A newly established de-addiction centre at Paderu District Hospital will offer treatment for cannabis addiction. Meanwhile, skill development programmes are being implemented to create employment opportunities for tribal youth. Concluding his address, the minister urged citizens to actively participate in police awareness campaigns and fully utilise government schemes. By staying away from drugs and engaging in productive activities, we can build a brighter future for our region, he emphasised.
PVTG tribes seek Pawan's visit to hilltop villages
Visakhapatnam: The Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) residing in eleven hilltop villages under the jurisdiction of the Pinakota, Peddakota, and Jinubadu panchayats have formally appealed to Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan to visit their remote hamlets. The tribal communities have specifically requested the deputy chief minister to visit at least two villages, Rachakilam and Gummanthi, to observe their challenges firsthand. These eleven hilltop villages in Ananthagiri mandal collectively house approximately 1,500 families. The tribespeople have emphasised the urgent need for improved road infrastructure to facilitate access to essential services, such as ambulances. They have identified the roadworks from Ballagaruvu to Gummanthi via Dayarthi as critical to addressing this issue. Currently, the lack of adequate road connectivity prevents ambulances from reaching Rachakilam village. When it was announced that Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan would visit the region, ASR District Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar initially considered organising a public meeting for the deputy chief minister at Gummanthi village. However, due to insufficient road access, the meeting venue was relocated to Ballagoruvu village, where authorities laid a BT road to accommodate the event. Despite the venue change, tribal leaders from the eleven hilltop villages have reiterated their request for Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan to visit their communities. They believe that by touring Rachakilam and Gummanthi, the deputy chief minister will gain a comprehensive understanding of their circumstances and the pressing need for road construction. Additionally, the tribal representatives have urged the deputy chief minister to instruct ASR District Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar, ITDA project officer V. Abhishek, and other senior officials to prioritise road infrastructure development in their villages.

Sutherland Stars As Australia Moves Closer To Winning ICC Womens Championship
Pacer Molly Penfold: All-rounder Annabel Sutherland hit a brilliant century as Australia moved closer to winning a third consecutive ICC Womens Championship title through a 65-run victory via DLS method over New Zealand in the second ODI at Basin Reserve on Saturday. After hitting a stunning century in the final ODI against India at Perth, Annabel made it back-to-back centuries by being unbeaten on 105 off just 81 deliveries, laced with 11 fours and two sixes at a strike-rate of 129.63. The importance of her knock is further noted with none of the Australian batters touching 35. Pacer Molly Penfold picked her career-best ODI figures of 4/42, but it wasnt enough as Australia posted 291/7. Kim Garth dismissed openers Suzie Bates and Bella Jones, before Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday fell to leave New Zealand in tatters at 131/5 in 30.1 overs, and being 65 runs behind of the DLS-par score when rain interrupted play. It eventually handed Australia a victory via the DLS method, and giving them a 1-0 lead in the series, with the final game scheduled to be held on Monday. Saturdays win also lifted Australia to 37 points in the ICC Women's Championship standings. India, with 25 points, remains the only team capable of matching up to Australia. DC Image Adivasi youth dance in the procession taken out during Ganesh idol immersion in Adilabad on Friday. DC Image Adilabad: Adivasis preparing for their annual religious pilgrimages, known as Poosmas, may encounter tigers near their sacred sites, where animal sacrifices are traditionally offered. These pilgrimages, set to begin in January, include visits to holy places like Jangu Bai and Bheemayyak located deep within the forests, where tiger movements have been recently observed. The Poosmas festivities, running from January 1 to 30, involve worship at locations such as Kotaparandholis Jangubai, Narnoors Pulikasa, and Danthanpallis Bheemayyak. These sacred sites, nestled in valleys surrounded by hills and dense forests, house gods and goddesses in caves. At Jangu Bai, Adivasis light traditional oil lamps (diyas) as part of their rituals. Tigers are known to frequent these areas, drawn by the scent of blood from goats and hens sacrificed at these sites. Recently, tiger activity was reported near Munda at Goyagaon in Wankidi mandal, Komaram Bheem Asifabad district a sacred site where Adivasis raise traditional flags and offer sacrifices to appease their deities. During the Poosmas, groups of Adivasis journey to these sacred locations on foot, accompanied by traditional drumbeats. Children ride in bullock carts as families carry their deities (Pen) to bathe them in sacred waters at places like Toplikasa. Worshippers also visit Demmal Rajul in the Kawal Tiger Reserves core area and pray at Rajulpen, wooden tiger effigies placed on the outskirts of agricultural fields, seeking protection for their cattle and themselves. Elderly Adivasis recount encountering tigers during past pilgrimages, noting that while they often hear roars or spot the big cats, devotees have remained unharmed. Adivasi writer Mothiram Atram of the Kolam tribe explained, We worship Rajulpen (Tiger) and pray for safety. The pilgrimage to Bheemayyak in Tiryani mandal and the bathing of Bheeyyak at Toplikasa are sacred traditions deeply rooted in our culture. As Adivasis prepare for their annual rituals, the coexistence of spiritual practices and wildlife continues to define their unique relationship with the forests they call home.

PM promises tap water to all homes
JAIPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (PKC-ERCP) in Jaipur. The ceremony for the project also marked the completion of one year of the Bhajanlal Sharma-led BJP government in Rajasthan. During the event, the agreement between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh for the ambitious project was unveiled. The Central government has designated the ERCP as a national project and committed to bear 90% of the total project cost. The remaining 10% will be shared equally by the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments. As part of the foundation-laying ceremony, Modi poured water from replicas of the Parvati, Kalisindh, and Chambal rivers into a pot, named the Ram Setu Kalash. He announced that Rajasthan would benefit significantly from the agreement, with tap water expecting to reach 100% of the states households. He noted that the water ministry is overseeing the initiative. Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 24 infrastructure projects worth over Rs 46,300 crore, spanning sectors such as electricity, water, roads, and railways. In his address, Modi attacked the previous Congress government in the state and held it responsible for delays in the ERCP project. Instead of resolving the issue, Congress kept fueling water disputes between states. People will certainly question Congress about why they failed to finalise the ERCP agreement, he said. The PM praised former CM Vasundhara Raje, acknowledging her role in initiating the ERCP during her second term and highlighted her efforts in drafting the framework for connecting the Parvati, Kalisindh, and Chambal rivers. Recalling Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Jaswant Singh, Modi said, When I was chief minister, both leaders came to Gujarat to discuss providing Narmada water to Rajasthan. Because of that initiative, districts like Churu, Jhunjhunu, Hanumangarh, Jalore, and Barmer are now benefitting from Narmada water. Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav stated that the 20-year-old water dispute between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh has been resolved. He described the ERCP as a boon for both states. Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma echoed this sentiment, terming the event historic. The Congress, however, dismissed the event as a political stunt. The Congress claims that due to political animosity, the BJP kept the ERCP on hold in five years of the Ashok Gehlot government. Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara accused the Central government of misleading the people on the ERCP. Gehlot also alleged that the BJP had compromised Rajasthans interests. The PKC-ERCP is directly linked to a population of 3.45 crore across 21 districts in Rajasthan. These districts include Jaipur, Kota, Jhalawar, Baran, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Tonk, Dausa, Karauli, Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Gangapur City, Beawar, Kekri, Dudu, Kotputli-Behror, Khairthal-Tijara, Deeg, and Jaipur Rural. The project aims to alleviate water crisis in eastern Rajasthan, providing drinking water to households and irrigation water to farmers, thereby benefiting both urban and rural populations in the region.

Rise in Number of Student Deaths at Tribal Welfare Hostels in ASR District
VISHAKHAPATNAM: In a tragic twist, more than 11 children have lost their lives in various tribal welfare hostels within the Alluri Sitarama Raju district this year, government records show. The alarming increase in student fatalities has caused concern, mainly among the tribal communities and has prompted calls for urgent governmental intervention. Among the dead was Murla Satyavati, a 14-year-old, 9th-grade student from GTWH School in Thatiparthy, Paderu. She passed away due to some sudden illness on Dec 13. Poojari Lakshmi Priya, a first-year student at the Government Junior College, Paderu, died of septic shock on Sept 22 after being admitted to KGH. J Dara Malleswari, an eighth-grade student at GTWA School (G) in RV Nagar, GK Veedhi mandal, died on Sept 16 from complications related to lung and brain failure. Furthermore, Gollori Mohandas, a 10th-grade student at GTWA School (B) in Sapparla, GK Veedhi mandal, died on Sept 15 due to respiratory complications when he was taken to PHC, GK Veedhi, for hospitalization. Sukuru Appala Konda, a seventh-grade student at GTWA School (G) in Tokuru, Ananthagiri mandal, passed away on Sept 21 from fever and respiratory issues while undergoing treatment at CHC, Srungavarapukota. J Samuel, a 10th-grade student at GTWAS (Boys) Sapparla, died on July 29 due to stomach pain and vomiting. On October 3, Vechangi Kantharao, a 9th-grade student at GTWA (Boys) Seekari, died after a sudden headache and vomiting. Jenni Vaishali, a 7th-grade student at GTWA School (G) in Bheempolu, died on Nov 6 at CHC, Srungavarapukota, following stomach pain and vomiting. In addition, four other students have died in AP Model Residential Schools, exacerbating the distress among members of tribal communities. The Andhra Pradesh Adivasi JAC, a notable advocacy forum, calls for immediate governmental action to address these fatalities. Rama Rao Dora, the ASR District convener for state Adivasi JAC, has underscored the deteriorating conditions within tribal welfare hostels. Dora stated that while the ITDA once provided Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) to each hostel, there existed a shortage of medical personnel now. This, he noted, has resulted in larger responsibilities for deputy wardens, who oversee between 400 and 800 children. This situation limits the ability of these institutions to provide adequate care, particularly for the 3rd- to 10th-grade students. Dora has emphasized the necessity of an MBBS doctor conducting bi-weekly health assessments in these hostels. While awareness regarding tribal issues grows, families are choosing to have fewer children, thereby increasing the significance of each child's health and well-being. The loss of a child in these hostels not only generates profound grief but also undermines parents aspirations for better educational outcomes from enhanced literacy. These tragic fatalities underscore the urgent requirement for improved supervision of these hostels apart from proper medical care within tribal welfare hostels, Dora stressed.

Launch of canal project in eastern Rajasthan sparks political debate
JAIPUR: The much-delayed, much-discussed and controversial Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (PKC-ERCP) will finally begin in Jaipur on December 17. According to the state BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the event where the foundation stone for this project will be laid. The project, which aims to address the water needs of most of east Rajasthan, will begin on the same day, marking a milestone in regional development. State BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj has confirmed that Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Madhya Pradesh government a month ago. Union Jal Shakti Minister and officials from Madhya Pradesh will also participate in the program. This is a significant project that will benefit many districts. While an MoU was signed earlier, now a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) will be finalized in the presence of the Prime Minister. Everyone needs to approach this positively, Bhardwaj said. The Bhajan Lal-led government in Rajasthan is nearing its first anniversary, and this development is being touted as a major achievement. However, the opposition Congress has raised questions over the project's transparency. Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticized the BJP government for allegedly keeping details of the agreement under wraps. Gehlot stated, There is no provision for farmers' welfare in the PKC-ERCP scheme. For the first time in my political life, I am witnessing an agreement between two governments being kept secret. The public deserves to know the details. He further accused the BJP of renaming the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) to PKC-ERCP and questioned the new agreement involving the Central Government, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Will this agreement safeguard Rajasthan's interests? Who benefits moreRajasthan or Madhya Pradesh? Why is this agreement being hidden from the public? he asked. The PKC-ERCP project is expected to provide drinking water, irrigation, and industrial water to 21 districts of Rajasthan. Beneficiary districts include Jhalawar, Baran, Kota, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, and others. While the BJP hails the project as a game-changer for the state, the opposition views it as a potential compromise on Rajasthan's water rights. With the foundation-laying ceremony on the horizon, political tensions are escalating, and all eyes are now on Jaipur to witness how this ambitious project will shape the state's future.

Ever since the tiger attacked and killed a calf at Buradakota village of Prathipadu mandal in Kakinada district on December 7, foresters have been trying to keep a track of the big cat. They have alerted concerned police and revenue officers about the movement of the tiger, so that they will be on high alert to come to the rescue of people in case of any attack. Foresters have taken up tom-tom campaigns to alert villagers about the movement of the tiger. Odisha: SIs Wife Seeks Justice over Infidelity
Bhubaneswar: In a shocking turn of events, the wife of a police sub-inspector (SI) in Odishas Kandhamal district has appealed to top officials for justice after allegedly catching her husband in a compromising position with another woman. On Wednesday, Tanuja Digal, wife of Sub-Inspector Kuber Digal, was seen making an emotional appeal with folded hands, urging officials from the state home department to take stringent action against her husband. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday when Tanuja confronted her husband at his quarters in the Kotagarh police station. She claims to have found him with a young woman in an inappropriate situation. Kuber Digal, who serves as a sub-inspector at the Subarnapur police outpost under Kotagarh police station, resides in Phulbani with his wife and children. The confrontation has led to Tanuja lodging a formal complaint with the Kotagarh police station. According to Tanuja, she had previously received information about her husband's alleged extramarital affairs but chose to overlook the rumours, placing her trust in him and staying behind to raise their children. However, the shocking incident has led her to take action. I placed all my trust in him and stayed behind to raise our children. However, he did this shameful act despite being a police officer. I have lodged a police complaint after seeing his misdeed with my own eyes, said a visibly distressed Tanuja Digal. The Kotagarh police have initiated an investigation following her complaint but have yet to release further details on the matter. The case has raised questions about the conduct of officers entrusted with maintaining law and order and has sparked public interest in the matter. Trump's picks for key positions in his second administration
President-elect Donald Trump has filled the key posts for his second term in office, prioritizing loyalty to him after he felt bruised and hampered by internal squabbling during his first term. Some of his choices could face difficult confirmation fights in the Senate, even with Republicans in control, and two candidates have already withdrawn from consideration. Here's a look at Trump's choices: Cabinet Secretary of state: Marco Rubio Trump would turn a former critic into an ally as the nation's top diplomat. Rubio , 53, is a noted hawk on China, Cuba and Iran, and was a finalist to be Trump's running mate before the slot went to JD Vance. Rubio is vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. His selection punctuates the hard pivot Rubio has made with Trump, whom the senator once called a con man during his own unsuccessful campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. Their relationship improved dramatically while Trump was in the White House. Defense secretary: Pete Hegseth Hegseth , 44, was a co-host of Fox News Channels Fox and Friends Weekend and had been a contributor with the network since 2014. He developed a friendship with Trump, who made regular appearances on the show. Hegseth served in the Army National Guard from 2002 to 2021, deploying to Iraq in 2005 and Afghanistan in 2011 and earning two Bronze Stars. He lacks senior military and national security experience and would oversee global crises ranging from Europe to the Middle East. A woman told police that she was sexually assaulted in 2017 by Hegseth after he took her phone, blocked the door to a California hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a detailed investigative report recently made public. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and has denied any wrongdoing. Treasury secretary: Scott Bessent Bessent , 62, is a former money manager for George Soros , a big Democratic donor, and an advocate for deficit reduction . He founded the hedge fund Key Square Capital Management after having worked on and off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. If confirmed by the Senate, Bessent would be the nations first openly gay treasury secretary. He told Bloomberg in August that he decided to join Trumps campaign in part to attack the mounting U.S. national debt. That would include slashing government programs and other spending. Director of national intelligence: Tulsi Gabbard Gabbard, 43, is a former Democratic House member from Hawaii who has been accused of echoing Russian propaganda. She unsuccessfully sought the partys 2020 presidential nomination and left the party in 2022. Gabbard endorsed Trump in August and campaigned often with him. Gabbard has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades and deployed to Iraq and Kuwait. If confirmed she would come to the role as an outsider compared to her predecessor. The current director, Avril Haines, spent several years in top national security and intelligence positions. Attorney general: Pam Bondi Bondi , 59, was Florida's first female attorney general, serving between 2011 and 2019. She was on Trumps legal team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. Considered a loyalist, Bondi also has served with the America First Policy Institute, a Trump-allied group that has helped lay the groundwork for his future administration. Bondi was among a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump at his hush-money criminal trial in New York that ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. A fierce defender of Trump, she also frequently appeared on Fox News and has been critical of the criminal cases against him. Labor secretary: Lori Chavez-DeRemer The Republican U.S. House member narrowly lost her reelection bid on Nov. 5 but had received strong backing from union members in her district. As a potential labor secretary, Chavez-DeRemer would oversee the department's workforce and budget and put forth priorities that affect workers wages, health and safety, ability to unionize, and employers rights to fire employees, among other responsibilities. Chavez-DeRemer is one of a few House Republicans to endorse the Protecting the Right to Organize or PRO Act that would allow more workers to conduct organizing campaigns and penalize companies that violate workers rights. The act would also weaken right-to-work laws in more than half the states.
