Sunanda K. Datta-Ray | Indias hopes, fears rise as Trump picks dream team
Thanks to China, India has reason not to be displeased with the initial list of members of US President-elect Donald Trumps Cabinet. While Marco Rubio and Mike Waltz, respectively nominated as secretary of state and national security adviser, favour more abiding security ties with India, the highly individualistic new Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, might leaven the President-elects grand vision of American might with an element of human concern that has nothing to do with propping up an adversary of Chinas. Floridas Senator Rubio presided over the 2023 Defence Cooperation Act to widen and deepen the strategic partnership between India and the United States. Mr Waltz is head of the India Caucus in the US Congress. Ms Gabbard, the American Samoa-born daughter of a white American couple from Hawaii who embraced Hinduism and raised their children in the faith, is a lifelong vegetarian. Ms Gabbard swore her oath to enter Congress -- she was then a Democrat -- on a copy of the Bhagavad Gita which she later presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our intelligence community Mr Trump announced about the 43-year-old first Hindu Congresswoman in the United States. Although with limited experience of intelligence operations, Ms Gabbard brings military experience to the job, having served in the Army National Guard for over two decades with deployments to Iraq and Kuwait. Meanwhile, the Great Elon Musk and American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy -- both basking in encomiums bestowed on them by the President-elect -- and heading the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), will help Mr Trump to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies to realise his dreams. The Office of American Innovation was supposed to do this last time. But no President is omnipotent. Mr Trump will need cooperative colleagues and skilful Speakers to get round the procedural complexities of both chambers to make a success of DOGE. Even so, in achieving the America First agenda, Mr Trumps dream team rooted in personal loyalty, policy alignment, and shared priorities may not please all friends and allies. US trade officials cannot approve of Chinas tactic of flooding the world with cheap manufactures. The nomination as attorney-general of the Florida Congressman, Matt Gaetz, who resigned after allegations of misconduct, including paid sex with a minor, which he denies, have shocked even Republicans. Indias unmentioned agenda of sending lakhs of emigrants to grab as many Green Cards as they can might feel thwarted by the anti-H-1B Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff for policy, and Tom Homan, the new border czar. Indians who feel victimised can turn to Ms Gabbard who has picked up the cudgels for them more than once in her past career. Shortly after being elected co-chair of the India Caucus in 2017, she talked about how Pakistan continued to allow its territory to be used by terrorists in India, Afghanistan and elsewhere. In Congress, Ive worked to cut back US assistance for Pakistan, particularly any military assistance, and increase pressure on Pakistan to stop these dangerous actions and break these ties, she explained. The Stop Arming Terrorists Act that she moved in the House of Representatives to end US funding of terrorist groups in Syria and its environs would have ended US funding for countries that back terrorism, such as Pakistan, if passed. Her comments about violence against Indian minorities as well as the recent rise of violence against Indians, Hindus, Sikhs, and other religious and ethnic minorities reveal a profound concern for the human condition and an instinctive understanding of the compulsions that inspired Indias Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. She attacked the Pakistani Army for cruelty against Hindus in 1971, and recently moved a resolution in Congress for the protection of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh after they had suffered repeated atrocities. In the 115th Congress, she had promised, we will continue our work to increase awareness and understanding across our communities, and urge the department of justice to investigate these horrific acts and address the rise of hate crimes across the country. Her influence might partly explain Mr Trumps vocal campaign against the anti-Hindu violence recently in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasinas ouster. Its ironic that Bangladeshs attorney-general, Muhammad Asaduzzaman, should choose this moment to suggest that Bangladesh, with a huge Muslim population (now more than 90 per cent), should become constitutionally a Muslim country. But that is quite another issue. At a personal level, Marco Rubios nomination significantly alters his relationship with Mr Trump. A fierce critic during the 2016 Republican primaries when he famously called todays President-elect a con man, Mr Rubio is now an ally, embracing Mr Trumps policies on immigration and foreign relations. With his expertise as vice-chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and given his hawkish views on China, Cuba, and Iran, Mr Rubio could play a central role in advancing Mr Trumps foreign policy goals. Others of consequence include Fox Newss Pete Hegseth, now nominated secretary of defence, an Army National Guard veteran with combat experience of Iraq and Afghanistan; South Dakotas plucky governor Kristi Noem who will be secretary of homeland security; and the tough, smart, innovative, and universally admired and respected (quoting Mr Trump) Susie Wiles, who refused to implement Covid-19 restrictions, and will be White House chief of staff with a pivotal role in shaping Mr Trumps foreign policy strategy and overseeing border security. The two remaining mysteries are the incoming administrations stand on Russias February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the Israeli belligerence in West Asia. The world is waiting for the President-elect to demonstrate his readiness and ability to bring peace to Ukraine. At the same time, the former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, selected as ambassador to Israel, is a staunch defender of the Zionist state and opponent of a two-state solution, advocating instead de facto Israeli absorption of the entire region. Mr Trumps intentions might become clearer when the dark horse in his stable, his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, said to be as close to Saudi Arabias real ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman al Saud, as he is to Zionist extremism, emerges into the light of decision-making. Last time around the OAI under Mr Kushner failed to make much headway. There are fears that DOGE might go the same way. If so, Indian-Americans at least can turn to Tulsi Gabbard. Rules permitting, her native Hawaiis Aloha spirit wont let them down.

Crime Rate Drops in State: AP Home Minister
Vijayawada : Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has claimed that the crime rate in Andhra Pradesh has come down during the past five months of the alliance government. The minister was replying to questions in the Legislative Council on Monday from members Varudu Kalyani, Mondikota Aruna Kumar and Chandragiri Yesuratnam. Vanitha came up with a comparison of the present and previous years figures. The number of cases booked in the first TD term 2014-19 was 83,202. Under the YSR Congress term, 1,00,508 cases were booked between 2019-24, showing a 20.8 per cent rise in the number of cases. In 2023-22, some 418 cases were booked while in 2024, 650 cases were booked. The crime rate has come down in the state after the TD-led government took charge in June last, she claimed. The present government, she said, took several steps to control crime and these include: establishment of Mahila Police Stations in all 26 districts, setting up of Women Help Desks, strengthening of police patrolling teams, closer inter-departmental coordination and activation of cyber crime teams. The other steps were strengthening of surveillance, spreading awareness among the public on crimes against women, formation of anti-human trafficking units, speedy trials of heinous crime against women and children and cases related to child pornography and child sexual abuse, she said. Vanitha said that with regard to child pornography and child sexual abuse, as many as 7,393 case were reported from June to October. As many as 12,115 accused were arrested and notices served on the accused.
Maharashtra Elections: Disputed Villages Push for Land Rights
Adilabad: Voters from 14 disputed villages along the Telangana-Maharashtra border are set to participate in the Rajura Assembly Constituency elections in Maharashtra on November 20. These villagers hope that their elected representatives will issue pattas (land titles) for their podu lands, which the Telangana government has long neglected despite non-tribals cultivating these areas. The disputed villages, located in Kerameri mandal of Komaram Bheem Asifabad district and Jiwati Taluk in Chandrapur district, include Parandholi, Kota, Lakmapur, Anarpalli, Jankapur, Karanjiwada, Anthapur, Maisapur, Bolapatar, Paraswada, Mukhaddamguda, Gouri, Khairi, and Arepalli, with a combined population of nearly 8,000. Recently, two new adivasi hamlets were added to the existing twelve villages. On the final day of campaigning, rural development minister Seethakka and Backward Classes Minister Ponnam Prabhakar actively campaigned in Ghadchandur in Rajura and Ballarpur Assembly Constituencies on November 18, supporting their partys candidates. Additionally, Congress leaders advocated for Jithender Shivajirao Moge in the Arni Assembly Constituency. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also campaigned for Congress candidate Subhash Dhote in Rajura on November 16, reinforcing the partys commitment to transforming Warangal into Telanganas second capital through various developmental projects, including the Underground Drainage System. The 14 disputed villages include many Lambadas and Dalits (Mahar). Lambadas in these areas have benefited from land pattas, educational opportunities, and employment in Telangana, where they are classified as OBC and Scheduled Tribes. In contrast, Dalits have repeatedly been denied pattas to their podu lands by the BRS government, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Ramdas Ranveer of Mukhaddamguda highlighted that the Maharashtra government has promised to issue pattas for podu lands cultivated by Dalits, unlike the Telangana governments inaction. This assurance has led Dalits in the disputed villages to prefer voting in Maharashtra, hoping for better land rights and economic support. Senior Congress leaders, including Atram Suguna, B. Srikanth Reddy, and Kandi Srinivas Reddy, actively campaigned across Maharashtra Assembly constituencies, supporting candidates who pledge to address the land rights issues of marginalised communities. Along with AICC adivasi department national president Shivajirao Moge, Khanapur MLA Vedma Bojju campaigned in Parva, Savarga and Savangi villages in Arni Assembly Constituency in support of party candidate Jithender Shivajirao Moge.
Allot 60 minutes daily for Jagan to speak in assembly: Kotamreddy
Vijayawada: Nellore rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy has urged the state government allot 60 minutes each day to YSRC chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to speak in the assembly to ensure his regular attendance. Otherwise, he might continue to skip the assembly sessions, he said. Sridhar Reddy, a three-time MLA who won the polls twice on YSRC ticket but later quit the party, won his third consecutive term from the Nellore rural assembly constituency in the 2024 elections as a TD candidate. Speaking to the media in the assembly lobby on Monday, Sridhar Reddy said it had been a long time since he met Jagan Reddy. On a satirical note, Sridhar Reddy said Jagan might attend the assembly if he is given a written assurance that he would be allotted an hour a day to speak and that nobody would interrupt him during his address. Reddy said, Jagan prefers to speak exclusively and normally does not allow other MLAs from his party to have their say in the assembly.

Donald Trump names Chris Wright as energy secretary
Palm Beach: President-elect Donald Trump has selected Chris Wright, a campaign donor and fossil fuel executive, to serve as energy secretary in his upcoming, second administration. CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, Wright is a vocal advocate of oil and gas development , including fracking, a key pillar of Trumps quest to achieve U.S. energy dominance in the global market. Wright has been one of the industrys loudest voices against efforts to fight climate change, and could give fossil fuels a boost, including quick action to end a year-long pause on natural gas export approvals by the Biden administration. Frequently criticizing what he calls a top-down approach to climate by liberal and left-wing groups, Wright has argued that the climate movement around the world is collapsing under its own weight. He has never served in government, but has written that more fossil fuel production is needed around the globe to lift people out of poverty. Consideration of Wright to head the administration's energy department won support from influential conservatives, including oil and gas tycoon Harold Hamm. Hamm, executive chairman of Oklahoma-based Continental Resources, a major shale oil company, is a longtime Trump supporter and adviser who played a key role on energy issues in Trumps first term. Hamm helped organize an event at Trumps Mar-a-Lago resort in April where Trump reportedly asked industry leaders and lobbyists to donate $1 billion to Trumps campaign , with the expectation that Trump would curtail environmental regulations if reelected. Mike Sommers, president of the American Petroleum Institute, the oil and gas industry's top lobbying group, said Wrights experience in the energy sector gives him an important perspective that will inform his leadership of the Energy Department. We look forward to working with him once confirmed to bolster American geopolitical strength by lifting DOEs pause on LNG export permits and ensuring the open access of American energy for our allies around the world, Sommers said. Jackie Wong, senior vice president for climate and energy at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, called Wright a champion of dirty fossil fuels and said his nomination to lead the Energy Department was a disastrous mistake. The Energy Department should be doing all it can to develop and expand the energy sources of the 21st century, not trying to promote the dirty fuels of the last century, Wong said. Given the devastating impacts of climate-fueled disasters, DOEs core mission of researching and promoting cleaner energy solutions is more important now than ever. The Energy Department is responsible for advancing energy, environmental and nuclear security of the United States. The agency is in charge of maintaining the countrys nuclear weapons, oversees 17 national research laboratories and approves natural gas exports, as well as ensuring environmental cleanup of the nations nuclear weapons complex. It also promotes scientific and technological research. Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, who is expected to become chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said Trump promised bold choices for his Cabinet, and Wrights nomination delivers. Hes s an energy innovator who laid the foundation for Americas fracking boom. After four years of America last energy policy, our country is desperate for a secretary who understands how important American energy is to our economy and our national security, Barrasso said. If confirmed, Wright will join North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump's choice to be interior secretary, as a key player on energy policy in a second Trump term. Wright will be a member of a new National Energy Council that Burgum will chair . The new panel will seek to establish U.S. energy dominance around the world, Trump said. Thomas Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, a conservative group that supports fossil fuels, said Wright would be an excellent choice for energy secretary. Pyle led Trumps Energy Departments transition team in 2016. Liberty is a major energy industry service provider, with a focus on technology. Wright, who grew up in Colorado, earned undergraduate degree at MIT and did graduate work in electrical engineering at the University of California-Berkeley and MIT. In 1992, he founded Pinnacle Technologies, which helped launch commercial shale gas production through hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. He later served as chairman of Stroud Energy, an early shale gas producer, before founding Liberty Resources in 2010. The announcement of Wright's selection came hours after a key Trump ally, billionaire Elon Musk , called for more direct public input into the decision-making process for another top post that the president-elect is still mulling, the head of his new administration's Treasury Department. Would be interesting to hear more people weigh in on this for @realDonaldTrump to consider feedback, Musk, who Trump has already tapped to co-lead a commission tasked with increasing government spending efficiency , posted Saturday on the X social media platform he owns. Musk used the rest of his post to become the first participant in the public poll he was proposing, endorsing Howard Lutnick, the CEO of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald and co-chair of Trumps transition team , over hedge fund manager Scott Bessent. Musk said in his post that Bessent is a business-as-usual choice, whereas @howardlutnick will actually enact change. Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change, he said. Both Lutnick and Bessent have been mentioned as possible picks to lead the Treasury Department. Bessent is considered the more conventional, business-friendly choice. He is skeptical about cryptocurrency, while Lutnick is friendlier to the crypto industry. Trumps pick to lead his Health and Human Services Department, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , also endorsed Lutnick, posting on his own X account, Bitcoin is the currency of freedom, a hedge against inflation for middle class Americans.
Andhra Pradesh: Madhupada School Headmaster Held for Rape
Visakhapatnam: Police arrested the headmaster of Madhupada Government School in Gantyada mandal of Vizianagaram district on charges of sexually assaulting the mother of one of his students. According to reports, the mother had visited the school headmaster Srinivasa Rao on Thursday to rectify errors in her son's school certificates. He suggested to her that they travel together to Srungavarapukota to resolve the issues directly with the relevant authorities. Trusting his words, the woman agreed to accompany him on his motorcycle. However, Srinivasa Rao drove into an isolated garden, where he sought sexual favour in exchange for correcting her son's documents. Despite her protests and screams, he allegedly raped her at the isolated spot. The headmaster then dropped her at Pandhara Appanna Junction, warning her that her sons certificates will get into jeopardy if she reports the matter to anybody. However, the woman contacted her husband, who rushed to pick her up. Together, they proceeded to the Womens Police Station at Srungavarapukota and filed a complaint. The police station registered a case and arrested Srinivasa Rao. Further investigations are on.
Opposition Grows in Coastal Karnataka Over Kasturirangan's Eco-Sensitive Zones
Udupi : Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has assured residents of villages bordering forest areas not to worry about the Kasturirangan Committee report as the Karnataka government has decided to reject the draft notification of the Committee report that proposes declaring parts of the Western Ghats as an eco-sensitive area. Chairing over a meeting held at the Dr. V.S. Acharya Hall in Manipal on the eco-sensitive area and the Kasturirangan report Poojary explained the challenges posed by the implementation of the report. Villagers and elected representatives of Coastal and Malnad regions in Karnataka are strongly opposed to the implementation of Kasturirangan report as they feel it would affect the normal life of the people in the nearby areas. Residents near forest areas are already burdened by existing forest laws. There is a fear that if implemented, the Kasturirangan report would jeopardize basic infrastructure like electricity, roads, bridges, drinking water, and housing, severely impacting livelihoods. The state government has firmly decided against its implementation, he said. The central government has issued six notifications to declare parts of the Western Ghats as eco-sensitive zones (ESZ), but none have been enforced. Poojary urged officials to document objections raised by residents and communicate these to higher authorities. Under the ESZ regulations, a one-kilometer buffer zone is maintained around reserved forests and wildlife sanctuaries. Residents in these areas are required to obtain prior approval from the ESZ Monitoring Committee for basic facilities, which disrupts their daily lives, he said. Poojary called for amendments to grant local authorities more discretion in providing approvals. Deputy Commissioner Dr K Vidya Kumari reiterated the states rejection of the Kasturirangan report but clarified that prior approvals for development projects in existing ESZ areas are still mandatory. Kundapur MLA A Kiran Kumar Kodgi emphasized the need for accurate mapping of the villages and survey numbers within buffer zones. He called for joint surveys by the Revenue and Forest Departments to demarcate boundaries clearly. Byndoor MLA Gururaj Shetty Gantihole stressed the importance of understanding the socio-economic impact of such policies. Authorities must highlight the difficulties faced by residents to the central government or the Supreme Court, which has mandated these regulations, he said.

Sinhalese-majority alliance captures Tamil fort on its own
While everyone expected the National Peoples Power (NPP) to win the Sri Lankan parliamentary elections, the partys spectacular scale of victory in the results declared on Friday has surprised many. For the first time after the introduction of the new Constitution in 1978, which brought in the unicameral parliament, a single pre-poll alliance has won more than two-thirds majority. NPP has secured 159 of 225 seats (141 elected members and 18 through the national list based on proportional representation) in the parliament in the elections held on Thursday. However, more importantly, this is the first time in the countrys history that a Sinhalese-majority formation, without the support of any established Tamil entity, has emerged as the leading party in regions with predominantly ethnic minority population. The sole exception was Batticaloa, where the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), the largest Tamil party, won three of the five seats while NPP and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) won one each. Disgruntlement with Tamil parties key factor for surprise outcome in SL polls In Jaffna, the nerve centre of Tamil nationalist politics, NPP won three of the six seats while ITAK, All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) and an independent group, led by Ramanathan Archuna, a lesser-known doctor who projected himself as an anti-corruption crusader, won one seat each. In the other Tamil-dominated electoral districts of Vanni, Trincomalee, and Nuwara Eliya and Badulla (where hill country Tamils live) and Ampara (which has a mix of Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslims population), NPP has emerged as the topper. A senior journalist with a popular Jaffna-based Tamil newspaper, who did not want to be named, said a Sinhalese-dominated formation getting a majority in the electoral district was beyond ones wildest imagination. He, however, said that another way to look at it would be that the two seats previously held by Angajan Ramanathan and Douglas Devananda, who always sided with the ruling establishment, have gone to the NPP. In a way, it is just a consolidation by the NPP that rode a popular wave, he said, pointing out that Devananda of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party has lost for the first time since 1994. Terming the outcome as interesting and surprising, Mahendran Thiruvarangan, senior lecturer attached to the University of Jaffna, said that the key factor that contributed to this was the disgruntlement with the Tamil parties, owing to infighting and their failure to deliver politically and economically. He added that apart from their promise on fighting corruption and economic revival, the NPP positioned itself as an inclusive alliance that followed a non-discriminatory approach ahead of the elections without trying to fuel racism to seek votes. He, however, expressed concern about the weak opposition that has emerged in the election, especially the defeat of MA Sumanthiran in Jaffna, an articulate leader of ITAK, and was skeptical about the ability of the weakened opposition to play a constructive role. When asked if people of the north preferring a national party over a Tamil party was an indication that they no more see the political solution to Tamils as an important problem, he said it is a not a rejection of Tamil political question, but an articulation that the political question cannot be seen in isolation without the economic question. Sivagnanam Shritharan, the president of ITAK and the only person from the party to get elected in Jaffna, acknowledged that time and nature have provided the NPP with a historic mandate never seen before in the country, including from the Tamil people. He said, this has, however, placed a huge responsibility in the hands of the NPP. With the two-third majority, he said he wanted NPP to deliver on the Tamil issues of devolution of powers under a federal structure and powers over land. Arguing that the economic downturn the country faces now was also because of the huge costs of the military and war, he said if the NPP acts arrogantly and fails to deliver on these issues, it may end up dividing the country further. Though Shritharan acknowledged that the fraternal fighting within Tamil parties and even within his own party had caused disillusionment among people, he said the silver lining is that the ITAK has emerged as the third largest party with seven seats to effectively articulate the problems of Tamils in a united voice, which will also help in strengthening the party further. Award-winning writer Mu Sivalingam, a hill country Tamil living in Kotagala in Nuwara Eliya district, where the NPP won five out of eight seats, said he supported the NPP this time, owing to the frustration with the traditional parties that represented the hill country Tamils. But he added that considering the Sinhala majoritarian past of JVP, the party leading the NPP, he is worried about the alliances brutal majority. I hope they will use it constructively and ensure land rights to hill country Tamils, he said.

The columns exhibits a full portfolio of product sizes, including 18, 24, 30and 36to fit with any kitchen design. Intuitive features like the Dual Ice Maker and Flex Zone Drawer can keep up with any party. Visakhapatnam: In a significant shift from traditional dining, cloud kitchens are revolutionizing the food service industry in Visakhapatnam, where some 15 such establishments are now operational. These delivery-only restaurants, run by diverse groups teams of friends, housewives or professionals -- are capitalizing on the post-pandemic changes in the consumer behaviour overall. The pandemic-induced curbs on dine-in services have altered the restaurant landscape. Many business units are adopting the cloud kitchen model to reduce operational costs. Cloud kitchens, also known as ghost kitchens or virtual kitchens, focus solely on food delivery, without a dine-in facility. This reduces overhead costs such as rent, electricity and interior decor. Ujjivan to Sell Rs 270 Cr of Bad MFI Loans
Mumbai: Ujjivan Small Finance Bank on Friday said it is looking to sell Rs 270 crore worth of non-performing and written-off micro-banking loans to asset reconstruction companies (ARCs). Of the Rs 270 crore worth of loans, around Rs 208 crore are non-performing loans, and the remaining Rs 62.36 crore worth of loans have been written off by the bank. The bank said it is carrying an overall provision of 85.61 per cent on the pool of micro-banking loans it is looking to sell. In the last quarter, several NBFC-Micro Finance Institutions including Small Finance Banks and several large banks such as Kotak Bank, IndusInd Bank, RBL Bank, and Bandhan Bank, reported a rise in default rates in microfinance loans (collateral-free loans to those with annual income of Rs 3 lakh). According to a report of Motilal Oswal, the current state of the MFI sector can be attributed to several factors, including but not limited to customer overleveraging and inability to repay, resulting in low center meeting attendance; lending to customers with multiple fake voter ID cards categorized as new-to-credit (NTC) customers; defaults from Ring Leaders or Intermediaries in some pockets of the country; high attrition at the field officer and even branch manager levels; and heavy rainfall and/or floods in certain regions that adversely impacted customer earnings and even their repayments. Not all of these reasons are mutually exclusive, and there is a fair possibility that one could be a cause of the other.

Saving language, culture is key, says UoH Professor
Hyderabad : Preserving languages and cultures can be as vital as preserving heritage sites. Languages hold the stories of people, their lives, and their legacies, said Dr N. Ramesh, who will play a key role in a collaboration between the University of Hyderabad (UoH) and Ghent University, Belgium, to document, explore, and preserve the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Nilgiri region of South India through the Nilgiri Archaeological Project. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the UoH and Ghent Universitys department of languages and cultures, led by Prof. Danilea De Simone, principal investigator. Under this project, special attention will be given to the Toda, Badaga, and Kota languages, focusing on their cultural practices and social identities as reflected through language use. The initiative will involve community-based interviews, observations, and documentation to capture linguistic nuances in cultural contexts, aiming to compare these practices with broader cultural trends and identify universal as well as culture-specific linguistic features. Dr Ramesh, an associate professor at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, School of Humanities at UoH, is serving as a research partner. With his deep roots in the indigenous Badaga community of the Nilgiris, Dr Ramesh is expected to bring a wealth of expertise in tribal linguistics, language endangerment, and language documentation. Growing up in the Nilgiris, I witnessed how languages could become carriers of cultural pride but also how they teeter on the brink of extinction, he said.

Trumps Day One: Deportations, border wall, scrapping Biden humanitarian programs
Washington: Donald Trump is expected to take a slew of executive actions on his first day as president to ramp up immigration enforcement and roll back signature Biden legal entry programs, a sweeping effort that will be led by incoming order czar Tom Homan and other Republican immigration hardliners, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The executive actions would give federal immigration officers more latitude to arrest people with no criminal records, surge troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, and restart construction of the border wall, the sources said. Homan, who served as acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from 2017-2018 under Trump, will bring a deep understanding of the U.S. immigration system after a four-decade career that took him from a frontline Border Patrol agent to head of the agency that arrests and deports immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Trump also is expected to end President Joe Bidens humanitarian programs that allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter legally in recent years and could encourage those with expired statuses to leave voluntarily, according to the sources, who declined to be identified. All of these should be on the table, said Mark Morgan, an immigration official in Trumps first four-year term who said he did not speak for the Trump transition team. Trump's early executive actions would kick-start his immigration agenda, which includes a promise to deport record numbers of immigrants in the U.S. illegally. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimated there were 11 million immigrants without legal status in 2022, a figure that may have increased. Some cities that received migrants, including New York, Chicago, and Denver, struggled to house and aid them. Trump, a Republican, defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in last week's presidential election. He made claims that the Biden administration allowed high levels of illegal immigration a focus of his campaign. Trump's transition effort remains in its early stages, and plans could change before his inauguration on Jan. 20. A Trump spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. Migrant arrests reached a record during Bidens presidency, straining U.S. border enforcement. But illegal crossings fell dramatically this year as Biden instituted new border restrictions and Mexico stepped up enforcement. Trump aims to drive illegal crossings even lower and use a whole-of-government approach to arrest, detain, and deport large numbers of people. Trump announced on Sunday night that Homan would serve as a White House border czar overseeing security and immigration enforcement. Vice President-elect JD Vance on Monday appeared to confirm that Stephen Miller, architect of Trumps restrictive first-term immigration agenda, would return as deputy chief of staff for policy, assuring the issue will remain central. Trump also plans to nominate South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem to become secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Noem, whose Midwestern home state is closer to Canada than Mexico, took a hardline stance on illegal immigration and made several trips in recent years to the U.S.-Mexico border, which she called a war zone in January. Trumps aggressive agenda will likely encounter legal challenges from states governed by Democrats, the American Civil Liberties Union, and pro-immigration advocates. Day One Takes Shape One of Trumps Day One executive actions is expected to be an order on so-called interior enforcement, arresting and detaining immigrants in the U.S. illegally, the sources said. Trump intends to scrap Biden administration guidance that prioritized people with serious criminal records for deportation and limited enforcement against non-criminals, they said. The Trump order would call for deportations to prioritize people charged with felonies and people who have exhausted their legal avenues to remain but would not restrict officers from picking up other potentially deportable immigrants. An estimated 1.4 million immigrants in the U.S. have final deportation orders, according to ICE, a group that will be a focus for the incoming Trump administration. A federal judge said, You must go home, and they didnt, Homan told Fox News on Monday. Certain groups - such as international students who support the Palestinian militant group Hamas and have violated the terms of their student visas - could also be listed as a priority, two of the sources said. ICE could use military planes in deportations and seek help from other government agencies to transport deportees, one source said. All options are on the table, the source said. Another order would deal with border security, the two sources said. Trump intends to send National Guard troops to the border and declare illegal immigration a national emergency to unlock funds for border wall construction, the sources said. Wall construction in Arizona - where Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs has opposed Republican enforcement efforts - could be a priority, two sources said. Ending Biden Programs Trump plans to end Bidens temporary humanitarian parole programs, which have allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter legally and access work permits, the sources said. The programs include an initiative for certain migrants with U.S. sponsors and another that allows migrants in Mexico to use an app to schedule border appointments. People in the U.S. with expired parole status who leave voluntarily could be allowed to apply for legal admission without penalties, the sources said. Trump is also expected to talk with Mexico about reinstating his Remain in Mexico program, which required non-Mexican asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their U.S. cases were decided.
Republicans secure 218 seats, take House majority
Washington: Republicans have won enough seats to control the U.S. House, completing the partys sweep into power and securing their hold on U.S. government alongside President-elect Donald Trump . A House Republican victory in Arizona, alongside a win in slow-counting California earlier Wednesday, gave the GOP the 218 House victories that make up the majority. Republicans earlier gained control of the Senate from Democrats. With hard-fought yet thin majorities, Republican leaders are envisioning a mandate to upend the federal government and swiftly implement Trumps vision for the country . The incoming president has promised to carry out the countrys largest-ever deportation operation , extend tax breaks, punish his political enemies, seize control of the federal governments most powerful tools and reshape the U.S. economy. The GOP election victories ensure that Congress will be onboard for that agenda, and Democrats will be almost powerless to check it. When Trump was elected president in 2016, Republicans also swept Congress, but he still encountered Republican leaders resistant to his policy ideas, as well as a Supreme Court with a liberal majority. Not this time. When he returns to the White House, Trump will be working with a Republican Party that has been completely transformed by his Make America Great Again movement and a Supreme Court dominated by conservative justices, including three that he appointed. Trump rallied House Republicans at a Capitol Hill hotel Wednesday morning, marking his first return to Washington since the election. I suspect I wont be running again unless you say, Hes good, we got to figure something else, Trump said to the room full of lawmakers who laughed in response. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who with Trump's endorsement won the Republican Conference's nomination to stay on as speaker next year, has talked of taking a blowtorch to the federal government and its programs, eyeing ways to overhaul even popular programs championed by Democrats in recent years. The Louisiana Republican, an ardent conservative, has pulled the House Republican Conference closer to Trump during the campaign season as they prepare an ambitious 100-day agenda. Republicans in the House and Senate have a mandate, Johnson said earlier this week. The American people want us to implement and deliver that America First agenda. Trump's allies in the House are already signaling they will seek retribution for the legal troubles Trump faced while out of office. The incoming president on Wednesday said he would nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz , a fierce loyalist, for attorney general. Meanwhile, Rep. Jim Jordan, the chair of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, has said GOP lawmakers are not taking anything off the table in their plans to investigate Special counsel Jack Smith, even as Smith is winding down two federal investigations into Trump for plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate . Still, with a few races still uncalled the Republicans may hold the majority by just a few seats as the new Congress begins. Trump's decision to pull from the House for posts in his administration Reps. Gaetz, Mike Waltz and Elise Stefanik so far could complicate Johnson's ability to maintain a majority in the early days of the new Congress. Gaetz submitted his resignation Wednesday, effective immediately. Johnson said he hoped the seat could be filled by the time the new Congress convenes Jan. 3. Replacements for members of the House require special elections, and the congressional districts held by the three departing members have been held by Republicans for years. With the thin majority, a highly functioning House is also far from guaranteed. The past two years of Republican House control were defined by infighting as hardline conservative factions sought to gain influence and power by openly defying their party leadership. While Johnson at times with Trump's help largely tamed open rebellions against his leadership, the right wing of the party is ascendant and ambitious on the heels of Trump's election victory. The Republican majority also depends on a small group of lawmakers who won tough elections by running as moderates. It remains to be seen whether they will stay onboard for some of the most extreme proposals championed by Trump and his allies. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, meanwhile, is trying to keep Democrats relevant to any legislation that passes Congress, an effort that will depend on Democratic leaders unifying over 200 members, even as the party undergoes a postmortem of its election losses. In the Senate, GOP leaders, fresh off winning a convincing majority, are already working with Trump to confirm his Cabinet picks. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota won an internal election Wednesday to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell, the longest serving party leader in Senate history. Thune in the past has been critical of Trump, but praised the incoming president during his leadership election bid. This Republican team is united. We are on one team, Thune said. We are excited to reclaim the majority and to get to work with our colleagues in the House to enact President Trumps agenda. The GOPs Senate majority of 53 seats also ensures that Republicans will have breathing room when it comes to confirming Cabinet posts, or Supreme Court justices if there is a vacancy. Not all those confirmations are guaranteed. Republicans were incredulous Wednesday when the news hit Capitol Hill that Trump would nominate Gaetz as his attorney general. Even close Trump allies in the Senate distanced themselves from supporting Gaetz, who had been facing a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Still, Trump on Sunday demanded that any Republican leader must allow him to make administration appointments without a vote while the Senate is in recess. Such a move would be a notable shift in power away from the Senate, yet all the leadership contenders quickly agreed to the idea. Democrats could potentially fight such a maneuver. Meanwhile, Trump's social media supporters, including Elon Musk, the world's richest man, clamored against picking a traditional Republican to lead the Senate chamber. Thune worked as a top lieutenant to McConnell, who once called the former president a despicable human being in his private notes . However, McConnell made it clear that on Capitol Hill the days of Republican resistance to Trump are over.
John Thune elected as majority leader by U.S. Senate Republicans
U.S. Senate Republicans on Wednesday, November 13, elected John Thune, a Senator from South Dakota and the current Republican whip, to succeed Mitch McConnell as the next majority leader in the upper chamber. On a secret ballot, Thune, 63, beat two contenders: John Cornyn of Texas, a former Republican whip, and Rick Scott of Florida, a longtime McConnell critic who has framed himself as an opponent of leadership and the establishment.

Uproar in AP legislative council over deaths due to diarrhoea
Vijayawada : Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council witnessed an uproar on Wednesday over the death of people due to diarrhoea, with opposition YSR Congress members trooping into the well of the house, demanding ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased. The YSRC MLCs subsequently staged a walkout. The 46 th session of the legislative council began with Question Hour on Wednesday, with chairman Koyye Moshenu Raju presiding over the proceedings. MLCs P.V.V. Suryanarayana Raju, Varudu Kalyani, Mondikota Aruna Kumar sought details of the deaths due to diarrhoea. They wanted to know measures the state government has taken to control diarrhoea and whether there is any proposal to provide ex-gratia to the kin of deceased. Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav responded with a no to the query whether many people had died due to diarrhoea. He, however, said 18 people had died because of diarrhoea, including four from Gurla mandal in Vizianagaram district. Leader of opposition Botsa Satyanarayana objected to the minister's reply, saying it is improper and satirical even though several people have died. YSRC MLC Kalyani alleged that the TD-led coalition government had failed in dealing with the diarrhoea cases. In his detailed reply, the minister said the water of Champa River had got polluted due to people upstream resorting to open defecation because of lack of toilets in Gurla mandal of Vizianagaram district. Further, pipelines supplying drinking water had become old and developed leaks. The water had not been properly chlorinated. Satya Kumar said presence of faecal matter in the water had led to diarrhoea. He pointed out that earlier too, 25,994 diarrhoea cases had been reported in 2019 and 18,965 in 2020 in Vizianagaram district. The minister maintained that their government had initiated all requisite measures like chlorination of water sources and treatment of those affected by diarrhoea. He assured to look into the issue of providing ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased. He underlined that so far, no ex-gratia has been provided in diarrhoea cases. However, the leader of opposition declared that he represented Cheepurupalli assembly segment for nearly 15 years and had provided protected drinking water schemes to every village. He blamed the state government for failing to maintain the drinking water supply properly after coming to power in June. Intervening into the issue, agriculture minister K. Atchannaidu faulted the previous YSR Congress government for not releasing funds to gram panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations in the last five years. He retorted that not even a fistful of bleaching powder had been given for maintenance of sanitation in villages. Atchannaidu asserted that their government is strengthening gram panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations with regard to supply of potable water and maintenance of sanitation. He underlined that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu felt pained following the death of people due to diarrhoea in the state. As Satya Kumar Yadav and Satyanarayana started trading charges, council chairman Moshenu Raju tried to bring the house into order. But YSRC members trooped into the well and started raising slogans. Thereafter, the leader of opposition announced that their party members are boycotting the house and led the walkout.
Visakhapatnam: Forest Wing Stall Roads to Remote Tribal Villages
Visakhapatnam: A 48-year-old diarrhoea patient from Karri Goda village in Gumma panchayat of Visakhapatnam district was carried by fellow villagers in a doli for eight kilometres from his village to Gumma. From there, he proceeded in a private auto-rickshaw to S. Kota Government Hospital for medical help. Badnaini Kumar was feeling very weak following an attack of vomiting and diarrhoea. There are many like Badnaini in this tribal region, who have had to travel with great difficulty to reach the nearest hospital. The government has allocated Rs 7.5 crore for constructing roads to villages, such as Karri Goda, Kattarevu, Kottungoda and Kalyan Gummi. The District Level Committee had in August okayed laying of these roads. But the project has remained stalled as the forest department has not issued the necessary permission for constructing the roads. HYDERABAD: As the scorching sun hinted at the start of summer, the season of sweat, endless demands for elaneer (tender coconut), patches of prickly heat followed. At night, beds and mattresses were abandoned without a second thought for the floor as our limbs relished the coolness of paais (mat), or the red oxide and stone in my grandparents houses in Tiruchy and Thanjavur. As the popular adage goes, home is where the heart is and the first encounter with any home is intertwined with its signature smell; however, the first tangible encounter is being ushered under the roof and stepping into the cool flooring, testing out the waters in a new space. Indian traditional flooring which has collected memories over decades also carries careful traces of craft. This art, polished over time, has been passed on through generations each style perfected by artisans, with whispers of mastery, a regions memory of art and culture. Traditional flooring used in various parts of India includes stone, wood, lime concrete, and mud. While porcelain and ceramic tiles are in vogue owing to various factors such as finish, maintenance, ease of procurement, and speed of laying, traditional flooring materials still dot the architecture world, says senior architect AR Kurian George Vattakunnel. From terracotta and mud in Mangaluru and Kerala to granite and sedimentary stones such as limestones in Kota, and sandstones in Dholpur and Jaisalmer traditional flooring is diverse. The tiles used in homes depend on the area, highlights architect and designer Benny Kuriakose. The natural materials whether stone, marble or granite are used in traditional ways and are good because you quarry and use it; and there is a huge variation in hardness and aberration. They dont have a harmful effect on health unlike artificial materials, he says. Stones have been used traditionally across the length and breadth of the country. India has the most types of climates tropical, with high rains in Cherrapunji and Kerala, and extreme cold in Himachal. India is a microcosm of all the weather in the world. Stone is a traditional material used in slightly more affluent homes, and is a long-lasting material. But stone has an ethical problem, it has thousands of years to form and when you quarry it, you are changing the topography of a place, says Kurian. In the architecture world, Benny notes, the trend is moving away from marble and granite to traditional stones as the latter are softer. CE explores four types of traditional flooring used in India. Kota Stone Whether youre a frequent flyer or a stranger to air travel, the next time you visit Chennais Airport, take a look at the flooring. Crafted with Kota Stone, these tiles are sedimentary limestone and typically available in shades of gray. Sourced from Rajasthans Kota region, these tiles are resistant and durable, and will withstand mild acid as well, explains Benny. This stone which has a greenish colour and is celebrated for its versatility obtained a GI tag in 2019. Athangudi Tiles W ith pillars, intricately carved ceilings, and stained glass, Chettinads mansions are opulent, and continue to draw crowds of tourists. Many linger to marvel at the palaces Athangudi tiles a mix of cement, concrete, and pigments, which transform into intricate flower-like designs. With roots in the states Chettinad region, this eco-friendly, handmade GI-tagged Karaikudi tiles are characterised by pastel, intricate, and checkered craftsmanship. Athangudi tiles, also known as Chettinadu or Karaikudi tiles, are concrete tiles cast on glass and painstakingly painted with patterns. With continued usage, the sheen of this flooring increases. Concrete flooring requires very careful and technically sound laying. As it ages, the shine gets better. But it is an easy crack, you need to be careful, explains Kurian. However, he adds, that the flooring may suffer cracks due to various factors. The designs of these tiles are from Europes Victorian tiles, says Benny. When the colonies were established, it would have come along with some of those foreigners. They are still being manufactured in various countries, and are similar to Minton tiles, he points out, adding that they are handmade. Terracotta Tiles F rom the Indus Valley Civilisation to trade and commerce in ancient times, the art of Terracotta dates back centuries. Now, anyone on a road trip zooming across the dusty roads, pastures, and highways of Tamil Nadu or Karnataka would have chanced upon terracotta horse sculptures, toys, mud pots, and lamps on the side of the road sold by hawkers. However, this material is not restricted to pots, pans, and art but is found in the flooring of homes. Mud flooring, in its natural form combined with binders and natural reinforcements, has been the flooring in use in several parts of the country. Baked mud or terracotta flooring is a more evolved usage of mudthis flooring has very low embodied energy and, like wood, is good to feel under the sole of your bare feet, explains Kurian, adding, they might scratch easily, though. Mangalore tiles and flooring like terracotta and mud are easy to replace, says Benny. We also had tiles in nattu oodu, which potters used to make in most villages in a handmade manner with clay, he adds. Cuddapah Stone Found in the quarries of south-central Andhra Pradesh, the cuddapah stone is durable and hardy. A stark black shade, this stone is used commonly in interiors and easy to cut into pieces. However, Kurian points out that the careful usage of locally available stones may be considered however with caution. Stones, though comparatively low on embodied energy, take several millions of years to form.

(Photo:DC) VISAKHAPATNAM: Efforts are on to enhance horticultural cultivation in the Padmanabham, Anandapuram, Bheemunipatnam and Pendurthi mandals in this region. The objective is to develop these crops using 60 per cent central funds and 40 per cent state funds under a central-government scheme, the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. District horticulture officer K Satyanarayana told Deccan Chronicle, Despite the offer of financial support and a structured planning, farmers in these areas are more interested in cultivating vegetables, fruits and flowers. Perennial crops such as mango, cashew, coconut, and palm oil thrive well in this coastal zone. But farmers are reluctant to raise these crops because they take time to yield fruit. The ongoing process of urbanisation here is impacting land use patterns. These farms are mostly situated on the city's outskirts. The reluctance to invest in perennial crops stems from feelings that these farmlands would not remain so for long due to fast-paced urban development in the region. Agricultural land is largely taken up for residential, commercial and industrial purposes. To improve agricultural diversification and enhance economic outcomes for farmers, the government is focusing on nine methods: introducing modern ways of vegetable cultivation, expanding palm oil plantations, establishing orchards, digging water ponds, creating flower gardens, developing pack houses and ripening chambers, providing subsidised machinery to farmers and promoting perennial crops. Additional steps, such as developing industries and cold storage, forming and strengthening farmer producer organisations and issuing Rythu Bazar cards to ensure affordable pricing for their crops are also under way. However, urbanisation presents major challenges. Many farmers hesitate to commit themselves to long-term perennial crops due to the rapidly changing land dynamics. Local farmer A Narasiah told Deccan Chronicle, With urban development eating up agricultural lands, it is difficult to invest in long-term crops that take years to yield returns. We are uncertain about the future availability of our land for agriculture. Many farmers opined that the government's efforts are commendable. However, regulating the process of urbanisation with long-term plans is crucial for implementing horticultural development programmes. Balancing development with agriculture ensures that farming communities benefit from such initiatives without undermining their livelihoods, they say. As the state continues to urbanise, creating policies supporting sustainable farming practices is vital. This will give farmers the confidence to invest in long-term crops, enabling the region to achieve its horticultural development goals while preserving its agricultural heritage, it is noted.

Ayodhya: THESE Reasons Cited for the Three-Month Delay in Ram Temple Completion
Ayodhya: The construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya has been delayed by three months due to a shortage of workers and the need to replace some stones. The update was shared by Nripendra Mishra, the chairman of the Ram Mandir Construction Committee, after a three-day review session on the progress of the project. Mishra explained that 8.5 lakh cubic feet of red stone from Vanshipaharpur is required for the temple's park area. However, the work has been impacted by a reduction of at least 200 workers. As a result, the original target to complete the temple by June 2025 is no longer feasible. It will take three more months to complete the work, Mishra said. Despite the delay, Mishra assured that work is ongoing across various parts of the project. Plans are underway to build a space for the shoes and slippers of thousands of devotees, with construction expected to begin this week. Regarding the temple's structure, Mishra revealed that some of the stones used on the first floor were found to be of lower quality and thinner than required. These stones will be replaced with high-quality Makrana stones, a decision made at the beginning of the committee's meeting. The project also includes the creation of 80 murals depicting Ramkatha, which will be placed along the 800-meter-long parkota. The murals, made of bronze, are already being installed, with 10 murals completed so far. Ayodhya's Deepotsav: A Dazzling Display of 28 Lakh Diyas and 18 Colorful Tableaux To Show
Need proactive steps to prevent Puducherrys fishing villages from coastal erosion: Congress
PUDUCHERRY: At the Congress partys fishermens wing consultation meeting held on Friday, Congress leaders demanded immediate proactive measures to protect Puducherrys fishing villages from coastal erosion and ensure sustainable livelihoods for future generations. Pradesh Congress Committee president V Vaithilingam chaired the meeting, in which former chief minister V Narayanasamy highlighted the effects of coastal erosion on Puducherry villages, especially in Pillaichavadi, where the erosion has reached the cremation ground and temple walls. Despite the governments promise, made two years ago, to lay protective stones along the coast, no action has been taken, he said. Narayanasamy criticised the governments inefficiency, pointing out that tenders for the project had been issued 11 times without any successful bid. The government could have directly supported fishermen by providing funds to place the stones themselves, he said, alleging that authorities are more focussed on tenders for potential financial gains. He further noted that with the rise in population in the fishermen community, there is limited space for future generations along the coast. The existing coastal management plan fails to accommodate expansion for fishing communities. Unchecked stone dumping on the southern side exacerbated the situation in several villages, including Veerampattanam, Kotakuppam and Kalapet, he said. Also, he criticised the recent inauguration of the fishing port expansion project in Thengaithittu, claiming it lacked specific plans for facilities. When questioned about amenities, the officials offered no clear answer, he said, accusing the Chief Minister of avoiding accountability. Further, he encouraged women to take up active leadership roles within the panchayats to drive up the diminishing activism within the fishermen communities. He also expressed concern about the government's Beach Management Plan, which mandates a licence for operating boats. The plan requires Tamil-speaking fishermen to communicate with coast guards unfamiliar with their language. Narayanasamy urged the government to engage fishing communities in consultations before implementing such policies.
Varni SI Caught Red-Handed by ACB
Nizamabad: Officials from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday caught sub-inspector Krishna Kumar of Varni Police Station while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a farmer. Europa League: Diallo Ends Manchester Uniteds European drought, Beats PAOK 2-0
Manchester: Manchester United secured its first win in Europe in more than a year by beating PAOK 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday. Two second-half goals from Amad Diallo sealed the victory at Old Trafford and boosted United's hopes of progressing in the competition. United's last win in Europe was against Copenhagen in the Champions League on Oct. 24 last year, but that run came to an end after Diallo's double. The winger's looping header beat PAOK goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski in the 50th minute and he followed that up with a deflected shot from outside the area that nestled into the bottom corner in the 77th. It's two wins from three games for United under interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has one more match against Leicester on Sunday before handing over to Ruben Amorim. It is not clear if there will be a role for the Dutchman after his temporary reign, but he is doing what he can to ensure that United is in the best possible position for when Amorim takes charge. Erik ten Hag was fired last week after a woeful start to the campaign left the team in 14th place in the Premier League and without a win in Europe's secondary competition the Europa League. Amorim was quickly hired in his place, but it has been left to Van Nistelrooy to fill the gap while the Portuguese serves a notice period at Sporting Lisbon. He has delivered wins in the English League Cup and the Europa League either side of a draw with Chelsea in the league.

CHANNAPATNA: In a high-profile political showdown, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa joined forces to accuse the Congress government in Karnataka of misgovernance. Rallying behind NDA candidate Nikhil Kumaraswamy in the Channapatna Assembly bypoll , the two political heavyweights called for a return to governance that prioritizes the needs of the people over partisan interests. In a passionate address, Gowda did not hold back in his criticism of the Congress-led Karnataka government, accusing it of mishandling public finances and policies. The state treasury is empty. Karnataka is on the brink of bankruptcy, and the Congress government has no money left for development, the JDS patriarch alleged. Corruption is rampant under their watch, and the common people of Karnataka are bearing the brunt of their failures, he added. Former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, also a BJP Parliamentary Board member, claimed that Nikhil would win the November 13 bypoll from Channapatna by a huge margin. NDA candidate from Channapatna for the November 13 bypoll, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, greets people | X Recalling the success of the 2006 coalition government between the BJP and JDS, Yediyurappa, who in 2008 had accused the JDS of failing to transfer power, praised Kumaraswamys leadership nearly 16 years later. We brought about meaningful change together, and Nikhil is the leader who can carry forward this legacy, he said. MP Kota Srinivasa Poojary also campaigned for Nikhil, launching an attack on the Congress government. He accused it of targeting the poor by scrapping 12 lakh Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards. The Congress government is planning to cancel 12 lakh BPL ration cards. This is a direct attack on the poor and underprivileged, he claimed. He urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to halt the move immediately. If this happens, Nikhil will ensure that these ration cards are restored, he said. When Kumaraswamy and Yediyurappa were in power, they worked tirelessly to uplift the poor, particularly women. Nikhil has the same vision for the states future, he added. The Congress refused to allocate even a small plot of land for Ambedkars final rites. What has Congress truly done for backward classes and marginalized communities? he asked the gathering.
Software engineer lost Rs 2.29 cr in stock market fraud
Hyderabad: The cybercrime wing of the Cyberabad police on Wednesday arrested two persons in connection with an investment fraud and five other accused are absconding. New pipeline from Alamatti to Vijayapura
Vijayapura: A new 10.8-km pipeline costing Rs 52 crore will soon replace the existing, damaged pipeline supplying drinking water from the Alamatti dam backwaters to Vijayapura city. Vijayapura district in-charge minister, M.B. Patil, announced this following a progress review meeting with officials on Wednesday. The meeting held in Bengaluru was attended virtually by the Vijayapura deputy commissioner and Zilla panchayat CEO and focused on drinking water projects for Vijayapura city and several district taluks. The city currently receives water from Kolhara, situated 43 km away, but a 10.8 km segment of the supply pipeline has been damaged over the years, causing significant water leakage. Despite prior attempts to address this issue, a comprehensive solution has not been implemented until now. Initially estimated at Rs 32 crore, the projects cost was revised to Rs 52 crore due to delay. The revised estimate has now received approval from the finance department, Patil said. In addition, as part of the third phase of the Vijayapura city drinking water supply project, a jack well needs to be constructed near Rambhapuri in the Alamatti backwaters. This will have a water purification capacity of 111 million litres. An amount of Rs 1.36 crore will be allocated to prepare the detailed project report for this unit. He instructed officials to commence the work immediately. Meanwhile, there are plans to increase the daily drinking water supply for residents of Babaleshwara and Tikota towns in Vijayapura district, which were recently elevated to town panchayats, from the current 55 LPCD (litres per capita per day) to 135 LPCD. The minister directed officials to coordinate with the Urban Water Supply and Sewage Board for this initiative. In the Vijayapura district, Amrit 2.0 project works are at various stages in Chadachan, Alamel, Muddebihal, Nalatwad, Sindagi, and Talikote. Additionally, tenders have been invited for the construction of water supply networks in Muddebihal (Rs 17.45 crore), Sindagi (Rs 26.53 crore), and Basavana Bagewadi (Rs 14.58 crore) towns, and these will soon be finalised.

CBSE cracks down on 'dummy' schools: Affiliation of 21 schools withdrawn, six schools downgraded
New Delhi: In a crackdown on 'dummy' admissions, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday withdrew affiliation of 21 schools and downgraded six schools from senior secondary to secondary level, officials said. The move comes following a surprise inspection at the schools in Rajasthan and Delhi in September during which several lapses were found, they said. The practice of dummy or non-attending admissions contradicts the core mission of school education, compromising students' foundational growth. To address this issue, we are taking a decisive action to combat the proliferation of dummy schools and send a clear message to all affiliated institutions to resist the lure of accepting dummy or non-attending admissions, CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta said. He said the vital observations of the surprise inspection committees regarding the irregularities observed during the inspections were communicated as a report to the respective schools. The replies submitted by the schools were examined in detail by the Board. Based on the inspection findings and supported by videographic evidence, affiliation of 21 schools was withdrawn and six schools were downgraded from senior secondary to secondary level, he added. Of the 21 schools whose affiliation has been withdrawn, 16 are in Delhi while five of them are in Rajasthan's coaching hubs -- Kota and Sikar.

US election made simple (slightly)
Washington: For those accustomed to India's first-past-the-post general elections, the US presidential election is a confounding system that includes primaries, caucuses, an electoral college, the early voting' option, the so-called battleground states -- and no federal Election Commission. But there is a fixed date for presidential elections: the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November every fourth year. And the race, most likely, has only two serious contenders, one from the Democratic Party (this time, Vice President Kamala Harris) and the Republican Party (Donald Trump). The voters, however, don't just pick the man or woman they want as President. The ballot paper could include options to pick representatives to the state legislatures and even local bodies. And voters could also be asked to participate in referendums on issues before the lawmakers in that particular state. For example, legalising recreational marijuana is on the ballot papers in Florida, North Dakota and South Dakota. Colorado wants to know this time if proceeds from a sales tax on guns should be spent to help victims of crime. State administrations conduct elections. So, processes vary. Opening and closing times at polling centres can be different from state to state. And if you think about it, November 5 is just another date. Depending on their state, people have mailed in their ballot papers or used drop boxes to cast their vote days earlier. In many states, a driving licence is about the only document you have to produce before casting your vote. An election ID card is just something that Trump wants everyone to possess. The process begins months ahead of the so-called polling date. Parties pick their candidates through primaries and caucuses held across states. Technically, voters don't pick the man or woman they want to be the next president. They vote for presidential electors a body of eminent people chosen earlier from each state. Broadly, each state gets a certain number of electors based on its representation in the US House and Senate. But when it comes to the crunch, it's not proportional representation. If Kamala Harris wins the popular vote in battleground' or swing state Pennsylvania, she wins the votes of all 19 electors from the state -- even if there is space here for some legalistic quibbling later on. The presidential electors from Pennsylvania form part of the 538-member electoral college drawn from all states. The candidate who wins 270 or more votes nationwide is the next President. Usually, the candidate who wins the electoral college vote has also won the majority of the popular vote. But there have been exceptions twice in the last six US presidential elections. Hillary Clinton's lost to Donald Trump in 2016 despite winning the nationwide popular vote. Unlike the Indian system, there is no cooling off period between the campaigning and the polling, and between the polling and the counting. Several hours before centres opened for polling across the country, the tiny New Hampshire resort town of Dixville Notch finished with its own in-person voting - following a tradition that allows it to be the first. At the stroke of midnight, its six voters began casting their ballots. Fifteen minutes later the vote count was complete a 3:3 split between Harris and Trump. Within a couple of hours of polls closing in most states, counting trends to hazard predictions could be available from at least some of the battleground states. These swing state, which can turn an election, are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
