Alarming rise in crimes against minors and women in Rajasthan sparks political debate

JAIPUR: Rajasthan is witnessing a disturbing rise in crimes against minors and young girls. According to data released by the state Police Headquarters, over 200 cases of gang rape were registered between January and June 2025. Tragically, five girls were even murdered after being raped during this period. The data also reveals more than 600 reported cases of sexual harassment, highlighting a growing threat to womens safety across the state. Families are increasingly worried, with many parents expressing fears in sending their daughters to school or college. Crimes related to dowry harassment further underscore the insecurity women face, even within their own homes. In total, 19,600 criminal cases involving various atrocities against women were registered until June this year. Police investigations led to charge sheets being filed in 5,359 cases. However, 4,790 cases resulted in First Information Reports (FIRs) being filed, out of which 4,613 were later closed as false. The police were unable to investigate 9,451 cases. Specially concerning cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 1,631 were registered. Of these, 186 were found to be false, and FIRs were filed in 14 cases for other reasons. Chargesheets were submitted in 744 cases, while investigations are ongoing in 707 cases. The disclosure of these figures has ignited political controversy in the state. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took to X to question the current government, writing, What is happening, Chief Minister? Please pay attention. Tensions escalated further on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, when a woman in Ajmer was murdered by her husband, who is a BJP leader. Gehlot expressed deep concern over the incident, accusing the government of failing to maintain law and order. In response, BJP Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot strongly condemned the politicisation of crimes against women. He said, It is very unfortunate to use crimes against women as a political tool. There has been a 10% reduction in criminal cases under the Bhajanlal government, which shows how seriously we take womens safety compared to the previous administration. It is regrettable that Congress leaders are politicizing a womans death. The escalating crime rates and the sharp political dispute underline the urgent need for effective measures to protect women and minors in Rajasthan

SC stays Rajasthan HC order restraining rape accuseds US-based wife from travelling abroad as collateral

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a Rajasthan High Court order asking a rape accuseds wife, employed in the US, to remain in India as a collateral if he wished to travel abroad for a job. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma issued notice to the Rajasthan government in the matter on the appeal filed by a software engineer, accused of raping a woman on the promise of marriage. The SC further directed the man to deposit Rs 2 lakh as surety for foreign travel. According to the prosecution, the man was booked on rape charges by the Christianganj police station in Ajmer after it was alleged that he met a woman on a matrimonial website and maintained close acquaintance with her for four years on the promise of marriage. Advocate Ashwani Dubey, appearing for the engineer, submitted that the wife was neither an accused nor a party to the case. He said no notice was issued by the Rajasthan HC and yet it passed an order restraining the petitioner. The wife, who is neither accused nor heard, is restrained from travelling abroad, purely to offset a hypothetical apprehension that the husband will abscond, Dubey argued. The plea said the high court, in a violation of the procedural impropriety and without hearing or impleading his wife, who is currently employed in the US, and ignoring the fact that she was not a part of the criminal case, directed her to remain in India. It was also argued that the HC direction was erroneous and violative of the fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution. The petitioner is an Indian passport holder and an Indian citizen and not the citizen of any other country and he will be under the control of Consulate General at USA and there are no chances of his absconding as he is willing to go abroad to earn his livelihood on work visa and therefore, there is no question of his absconding, the plea said. The bench was informed that the petitioner would travel for a specific period and ready to state on oath that he would be available for trial as and when directed.

Rajasthan High Court orders probe into human trafficking charges against Lok Sabha Speakers OSD

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan High Court has ordered a formal investigation into serious allegations of human trafficking involving Rajeev Dutta, an RPS officer currently serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The court has appointed Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Dinesh MN to lead the probe, considering the political sensitivity and gravity of the matter. The case stems from a complaint filed earlier this year by advocate Shekhar Mewada at the Christian Ganj police station in Ajmer. In his complaint, Mewada alleged that Rajeev Dutta, along with Archana Jhala and Dinesh Murzani, was operating a trafficking racket that targeted minor children. According to the complaint, children were trafficked through deception and coercion for the purpose of physical and sexual exploitation. Mewada claimed the accused knowingly harbored the trafficked minors and were directly involved in their abuse. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, no prompt action was taken by the local police. Mewada then approached the High Court, citing political pressure and threats to his life. During the hearing, the court observed that law enforcement appeared reluctant to act due to the involvement of politically influential individuals. It noted that the FIRs filed against the petitioner in Kota, Bundi, and Pali seemed retaliatory, aimed at silencing the complainant and obstructing the original investigation. The court was also informed that although the petitioner complied with police summons, he was not interrogated. On his return to Jaipur, he was allegedly attacked and received life threats. Intervention from the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, and support from a group of advocates reportedly ensured his safety. Taking these concerns seriously, the court instructed that relevant documents from the pending criminal case in the Judicial Magistrates court in Ajmer be made available for review. It further directed that Rajeev Dutta and the other accused be formally added as respondents in the case. ADGP Dinesh MN, who appeared via video conferencing, was asked to be present during future proceedings and provide a detailed response along with case records. Meanwhile, advocate Shekhar Mewada was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants about two months ago. He has blamed Rajeev Dutta for orchestrating the attack and also alleged that multiple false cases have been filed against him in retaliation for pursuing the human trafficking complaint. This is not the first time Rajeev Dutta has been embroiled in controversy. In 2022, Rajasthan Congress MLA Bharat Singh had accused him of misusing official power while serving as OSD to the Lok Sabha Speaker. The MLA had also raised the issue in a letter to the then Director General of Police, Umesh Mishra.

Notice by Ajmer Dargah evading responsibility in case of accidents angers Muslim organisations

JAIPUR: A recent notice issued by the Naziman officer appointed by the state governmentof the Ajmer Sharif Dargah has sparked sharp criticism from several Muslim organizations and members of the public. The notice, dated July 21 and digitally signed by Nazim Mohammad Belal Khan, warns pilgrims about the potential risks posed by old structures within the dargah complex. It further states that the administration will not be legally responsible in case of any accidents. The timing of the notice has intensified the backlash, as preparations are currently underway for the 814th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, an annual event that draws lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad. The Muslim Progressive Federation called the notice shameful and a fall of responsibility. In a strongly worded letter to the Nazim, Federation president Abdul Salam Johar condemned the disclaimer. It is unacceptable to issue such a disclaimer at a place of collective spiritual importance, he wrote. Echoing this sentiment, Rajasthan Muslim Alliance president Mohsin Rashid termed it a dereliction of duty and emphasized that Ajmer Sharif is not a tourist spot but a deeply revered religious site. Such negligence cannot be justified. The notice quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread anger. Many users demanded that the notice be withdrawn and urged the administration to implement immediate safety measures. Some also called on the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs to step in if the Nazim fails to take appropriate action. As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Nazim's office in response to the criticism. Amid growing concerns, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, drawing attention to the deteriorating condition of the world-renowned Ajmer Dargah. The Board has cited serious safety issues and administrative apathy, invoking the Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955. Board General Secretary Mohammad Zafarul Rahim Mujaddidi stated in the letter that the Dargah Committee has not been constituted for the past three years, which has stalled all development and maintenance work at the site. He highlighted several recent incidents as evidence of the shrines worsening state. On July 2, the wall of a hut within the dargah collapsed. On July 15, part of a hall cracked, and plaster fell from several areas. In addition, waterlogging due to monsoon rains has created unsafe conditions for pilgrims. The safety of lakhs of pilgrims is at risk. Urgent government intervention is necessary to ensure structural repairs and administrative accountability, Mujaddidi wrote. The Board alleges that without a functioning Dargah Committee, no upkeep or welfare schemes are being implemented, leaving the shrine and its visitors vulnerable. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah, dedicated to the revered Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, stands as a powerful symbol of Indias Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeba centuries-old tradition of Hindu-Muslim unity. Since the Mughal era, the dargah has held spiritual and cultural significance for people of all faiths. Every year, lakhs of devotees, including from abroad, visit the shrine during the Urs and other occasions. The dargah also made headlines last year when a lower court in Ajmer admitted a petition seeking to declare it a Hindu templean issue that further fueled communal and legal debates.

In Himachal, more than 200 roads are out of bounds for vehicular traffic, a majority of them in Mandi, while a flash flood warning has been issued for 12 districts in Jharkhand. An individual each drowned in Kullu and Kangra districts, one died after being bitten by a snake in Bilaspur, while one was killed after falling from a height, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said. BAHRAICH: Amid a ban by the district administration on the fair held at the tomb of Syed Salar Masood Ghazi in Bahraich, the national president of BJP Minority Front, Jamal Siddiqui, offered a 'chaddar' at the dargah on the occasion of Urs and said he considers Ghazi a saint. On May 3, the Bahraich district administration denied permission for the annual 'Jeth Mela' traditionally held at the dargah. In an official statement, the administration cited the prevailing atmosphere of public anger following incidents like the Pahalgam attack and Sambhal violence and concerns surrounding the amended Waqf Act as the reasons. The Jeth Mela, originally scheduled to take place from May 15 to June 15, was expected to draw lakhs of pilgrims from India and abroad. Replying to queries, Siddiqui told reporters that there can be a ban on the fair, but there is no ban on Urs. People are coming for pilgrimage. Syed Sahab's status is very high. Lakhs of people come here to pay obeisance and have benefited from him. I have also come here to pray with my father, he said. Lucknow Bench of Allahabad HC seeks locus standi of petitioners on plea against ban on Bahraich Urs The ban on the fair came in the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's remarks against glorifying invaders. During a visit to Bahraich on March 20 this year, the CM had praised the bravery of Maharaja Suheldev, who is believed to have defeated Salar Ghazi, and said that glorifying the invader means strengthening the foundation of treason. Asked about Adityanath's remarks, Siddiqui told reporters, Yogi ji is the chief minister of our state. I don't know in what context he said this. Yogi ji's faith, knowledge and information are at their place, but I believe in Ghazi Baba. He said, When I was six months old, I was brought here. I have been coming here since then. Today, I have come here because of my faith and we have the right to follow our faith. On the question of Ghazi being called an invader, Siddiqui said, Ghazi Baba was born in Ajmer in 1014 and he died in 1034. Now, it is not possible to dig out tales that date back to one thousand years. But according to the miracles that I have seen with my own eyes from my birth till today, Ghazi Baba is a saint, a 'siddha purush'. He is a 'Peer' and Wali Allah. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians all come here. The work of uniting the country is done here, Siddiqui said. The Allahabad High Court had on May 17 declined to grant permission for organising the annual fair at the dargah. However, in its order, the court's Lucknow bench allowed rituals and other related routine activities at the dargah. Despite it being a holiday, the Chief Justice constituted a special bench comprising Justices AR Masoodi and Subhash Vidyarthi which issued the order after hearing the petitions filed by Waqf number 19, Dargah Sharif and two other Public Interest Litigations .

JAIPUR: Amid rising military tensions between India and Pakistan, patriotism is finding a unique expression in Rajasthan. Inspired by the Indian Armys recent counter-terrorism initiative, 'Operation Sindoor', several families in the state are naming their newborns after the operation. At the Government Hospital in Nawalgarh, Jhunjhunu district, three babies have already been named 'Sindoor'. The childs grandmother added, We lost many of our bravehearts in the attack. I will send my grandson to the army so he can serve the nation. Four new laws passed in Rajasthan after Governors approval

The Rajasthan government passed four bills during the recent budget session. The decisions came into immediate effect after the bills, tabled in the assembly last month, received approval from Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde. The bills passed are the Rajasthan Democracy Fighter Honor Bill 2024, Rajasthan University Laws Amendment Bill 2025, Rajasthan Laws Amendment Act 2025, Rajasthan Laws Repeal Act. Rajasthan Democracy Fighter Honor Bill 2024 Under this new law, democracy fighters will get a monthly pension of Rs 20,000. Along with this, a medical allowance of Rs 4,000 and a free travel facility will be available in roadways buses. This facility will also be available to their dependents. At present, there are 1,140 democracy fighters or their dependents in Rajasthan. After the death of a democracy fighter, their spouse will continue to get these facilities for life. They will also be invited to national festivals. The BJP government has implemented this again after it was stopped by the Congress government in 2019. Rajasthan University Laws Amendment Bill 2025 In the 33 state universities of the state, the name of the Vice Chancellor has now been changed to 'Kulguru' and the name of the Pro-Vice Chancellor has been changed to 'Prati-Kulguru'. The government argues that the Guru does the work of character building of the students, and the word Vice Chancellor gives a sense of administrative ownership. Rajasthan Laws Amendment Act 2025 Under the Rajasthan Laws Amendment Act 2025, judges will not be appointed now in the Municipal Improvement Trustees and Authorities of Rajasthan. A bill has been passed to eliminate the requirement of judges in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur and Ajmer Development Authorities. This bill was brought after the interim decision of the Supreme Court. This will have no effect on the powers of the authorities, and the state government will be able to determine uniform service conditions. Rajasthan Laws Repeal Act Under this law, 45 obsolete and old laws of Rajasthan have been abolished. Most of these are related to the Panchayati Raj department, which are no longer useful. The government says that this will simplify administrative processes and eliminate unnecessary complexities. Apart from this, a new update in Food Security Scheme, names of 17 lakh ineligible people have been removed while 19 lakh new ones added.
