Recent floods alter Punjabs soil texture and profile, triggering questions over fertility: PAU study
CHANDIGARH: A study conducted by Punjab Agricultural University revealed that the texture of soil and its profile have been altered and re-shaped in Punjab after recent floods. The study also revealed that the floods caused nutrient imbalance as red sand and silt carried by floodwaters from the Himalayan foothills settled across vast stretches of agricultural fields. The mixing has raised questions about the fertility and the viability of future crops, as the floods have added an impermeable layer that hinders water infiltration and root growth. The study was conducted in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Kapurthala and Patiala to assess the impact of floodwaters that had brought large quantities of silt from higher reaches and deposited it in the fields. Test teams were sent to these areas to guide farmers in corrective measures before the rabi season. Over 20 soil samples were taken from each site at varying depths and distances from the river. The analysis warns of major challenges for the upcoming rabi season as the massive sand deposition will affect soil fertility, and urgent measures are needed to restore balance. At many places, as much as 4 to 5 feet of sand has been deposited. Floods submerge 16,000 acres along Punjabs Indo-Pak border, farmers seek BSF support for desilting The findings show sediment deposits ranging from a few inches to over one metre, with textures varying from sandy to fine loam. The pH levels were alkaline, and the electrical conductivity remained low, indicating no immediate salinity threat. On the other hand, organic carbon content averaged above 0.75 per cent, exceeding the States usual 0.5 per cent, with a few samples crossing the 1 per cent mark. Farmlands with heavier sand deposits showed reduced carbon levels. While phosphorus and potassium levels fluctuated, micronutrients like iron and manganese were found in unusually high concentrations, likely due to iron-coated sand particles carried by floodwaters. To restore soil texture, PAU has advised farmers to integrate organic matter into the soil as manure, farmyard poultry waste to stimulate microbial activity and support healthy root systems. The university has calculated that removing one foot of sand from one acre of land will require at least 350 trolleys for loading. The university advised farmers to follow recommended fertiliser doses and apply a 2 per cent urea spray (4 kg urea in 200 litres of water) 4050 days after sowing. In wheat and berseem crops, farmers should look for manganese deficiency and apply a 0.5 per cent foliar spray of manganese sulphate if symptoms appear, the university advised. Vice Chancellor of PAU Dr Satbir Singh Gosal said that now the state faces the twin challenges of sand deposition and formation of a dense, largely impermeable layer of soil beneath the topsoil, restricting water infiltration and root growth. While mineral-rich silt from the Himalayan foothills has added nutrients, it has also disturbed native soil profiles. Since sand is devoid of nutrients, it is going to affect fertility and may impact yield. Now, restoring balance is critical, he said. Gosal said that as of now, sowing of wheat has to be done in another three weeks, but in the areas where the soil has been affected, the process will get delayed and may impact productivity. Meanwhile, Dr Rajeev Sikka, head of the soil science department, said that around 5,000 acres of farmland in Punjab has been impacted. Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research at the university, warned of hardpan formation due to sediment compaction, which he said could hinder water infiltration and root growth. He recommended deep tillage using chisel ploughs in heavy soils and thorough mixing of silt and clay in lighter soils to prevent layering. On the other hand, Dr Makhan Singh Bhullar, director of extension education, urged farmers not to burn paddy straw and instead incorporate it into the soil to enhance fertility.
'Fake CBI officer' scam busted: Surat man arrested for duping professor of Rs 7.5 lakh
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Crime Branch has busted a multi-state cyber fraud racket after a female professor from Ajmer, Rajasthan, was duped of Rs 7.5 lakh in the name of a digital arrest by scammers posing as CBI officers. Hitesh Praveenchandra Dhodiyawala, the alleged mastermind, was arrested from Jahangirpura, Surat, exposing a nationwide scam involving multiple states and transactions worth lakhs. According to police, the fraud occurred on 30 August 2025, when the professor received a phone call claiming that a SIM card issued in her name had been used to send obscene and sexually harassing messages. She was then contacted via video call by a man impersonating CBI officer Daya Nayak, who warned her that a Supreme Court case was pending against her. The caller threatened digital arrest unless she transferred money to clear her name. Terrified, the professor wired Rs 7.5 lakh online, only to later realize she had been scammed. Ajmer Cyber Crime Police traced the bank account used in the fraud to Hitesh Dhodiyawala, 45, based in Surat. The Vehicle Theft Squad of Surat Crime branch tracked him to Doctor Park Road, Jahangirpura, and arrested him in a late-night operation. Police investigations revealed Hiteshs criminal background. Previously a stock market trader, he ran an investment firm, De Hypers Investment Advisors, which collapsed after losses of Rs .5 crore, leaving him heavily in debt. Desperate, he joined an online money-laundering network, connecting with a handler known as Roki through Instagram. Hitesh allegedly met other gang members in Ahmedabad and provided his IndusInd Bank account to route illicit funds, charging a fixed commission in return. On 2 September 2025 alone, Rs 48.78 lakh was reportedly routed through his account, with Hitesh pocketing Rs 62,900. His account was linked to at least seven cybercrime cases across India, including complaints from West Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Telangana. Police also noted that a Prohibition Act case was already registered against Hitesh at Katargam Police Station. Hitesh has now been handed over to Ajmer Cyber Crime Police.

The desert states politics is sizzling again, stirred by former CM Ashok Gehlot. On a recent trip to Ajmer, Gehlot casually dropped a bomb by claiming, It would have been fun if Vasundhara Raje had become CM. Gehlot went on to call Raje the natural choice of the BJP and sighed that despite her experience, the saffron party didnt give her the throne again. We are also sad about this, he added with his trademark political poker face. The remark came just days after Rajes meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat fuelled speculation in power corridors. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauds NCERT for modules on partition horrors, Op Sindoor
NEW DELHI: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday lauded the National Council for Educational Research and Technology (NCERT) for its recent modules on the horrors of partition as well as Operation Sindoor. Taking part in a function held to mark the 65th Foundation Day of NCERT at its campus in Aurobindo Marg, Pradhan said, NCERTs efforts to highlight Operation Sindoor through a new module is appreciable. A similar effort has been made with the partition horrors. This also deserves much appreciation. Should the country forget about the horrors that happened? If we do not know what has happened in the past and connect it with our present, then we will remain misguided in the future. We will be confused in the future, he said. The module released for classes VI to VIII on August 15 resulted in a war of words between the Congress and the BJP. It generated much controversy as it held Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Congress and Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for the partition. Pradhan called for the introduction of Artificial Intelligence in the Education system and the need to integrate digitalisation into it. He repeatedly lauded NCERT for the role they have played and continues to play in nation-building through their textbooks. NCERT books are the ones that everyone goes for any reference, the Minister said. Gujarat Police crack down, nab three key accused in Rajasthan's murder cases
AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad crime branch has arrested three prime accused in the three murders that happened in Rajasthan's Ajmer a month ago. In a clash between two rival groups, one group had lost two members and the opponent group had lost one. The accused had fled to Ahmedabad and were hiding here. The arrested men have been identified as Salman Abdulali Qureshi (29), Allarakha Abdulali Qureshi (25), and Avesh Abdulali Qureshi (20) all residents of Shauryawan Mohalla in Diggi Bazaar, Ajmer. After the arrests, the trio will be handed over to Ramganj police in Rajasthan for further investigation. The clash, which was triggered by a petty dispute over chicken rates, had left three dead and ten injured. The case dates back to July 15, when two rival groups of the Qureshi community clashed violently in Khanpura, Ajmer. What began as heated arguments fueled by old enmity and aggravated on a WhatsApp group over chicken prices soon turned into a bloody street war outside Pakiza Meat Shop. Sharp-edged weapons and rods were freely used, leaving ten people severely injured. Among them, three -- Imran, Shahnawaz, and Ghulam Qureshi -- succumbed to their injuries en route to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital. Several others, including Salman, Shahrukh, and Irrfan, sustained grave injuries, with two still battling for life. The incident had forced police to rush reinforcements and clamp down on the unrest. Postmortems were conducted, FIRs registered, and a heavy police presence deployed to restore order in the tense locality. Investigations pointed to old rivalries within the community as the root cause of the violence. Even as Ajmer police launched a manhunt, several suspects fled the city. Acting on specific intelligence that three of them had taken shelter in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Crime Branch mounted surveillance and finally tracked down and arrested the fugitives. Confirming the breakthrough, Ahmedabad Crime Branch Police Inspector Mehul Chauhan said, These arrests were made on the basis of surveillance and intelligence inputs. The accused will be handed over to Ajmer police, and efforts are underway to nab the remaining absconders. He added, Out of the 14 accused, five are brothers. Two were caught injured during the clash, and three have now been arrested from Ahmedabad. Their father, Abdul Ali, is also named in the case and is absconding. With these three fresh arrests, the total number of accused held has reached 10, while three others are still on the run.

I saw a reel where Maharaj Ji spoke about Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Ajmeri and Amir Khusrow with such respect. It struck me that he was working for brotherhood at a time when hatred is easily fanned. His long life is essential for keeping that spirit alive, Chishti said. He follows the Sufi tradition. He first consulted with his wife about the donation. I lost my mother in 2023, which nearly made me virtually lifeless. I was married a year back and have consulted my better half before writing to the authorities, offering to donate my kidney to ensure a long life and well-being of the Hindu religious preacher. My life is not bigger than the life of a spiritual guru who is working at promoting community amity and unity in the country, Chishti said.

Alarming rise in crimes against minors and women in Rajasthan sparks political debate
JAIPUR: Rajasthan is witnessing a disturbing rise in crimes against minors and young girls. According to data released by the state Police Headquarters, over 200 cases of gang rape were registered between January and June 2025. Tragically, five girls were even murdered after being raped during this period. The data also reveals more than 600 reported cases of sexual harassment, highlighting a growing threat to womens safety across the state. Families are increasingly worried, with many parents expressing fears in sending their daughters to school or college. Crimes related to dowry harassment further underscore the insecurity women face, even within their own homes. In total, 19,600 criminal cases involving various atrocities against women were registered until June this year. Police investigations led to charge sheets being filed in 5,359 cases. However, 4,790 cases resulted in First Information Reports (FIRs) being filed, out of which 4,613 were later closed as false. The police were unable to investigate 9,451 cases. Specially concerning cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 1,631 were registered. Of these, 186 were found to be false, and FIRs were filed in 14 cases for other reasons. Chargesheets were submitted in 744 cases, while investigations are ongoing in 707 cases. The disclosure of these figures has ignited political controversy in the state. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took to X to question the current government, writing, What is happening, Chief Minister? Please pay attention. Tensions escalated further on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, when a woman in Ajmer was murdered by her husband, who is a BJP leader. Gehlot expressed deep concern over the incident, accusing the government of failing to maintain law and order. In response, BJP Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot strongly condemned the politicisation of crimes against women. He said, It is very unfortunate to use crimes against women as a political tool. There has been a 10% reduction in criminal cases under the Bhajanlal government, which shows how seriously we take womens safety compared to the previous administration. It is regrettable that Congress leaders are politicizing a womans death. The escalating crime rates and the sharp political dispute underline the urgent need for effective measures to protect women and minors in Rajasthan
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a Rajasthan High Court order asking a rape accuseds wife, employed in the US, to remain in India as a collateral if he wished to travel abroad for a job. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma issued notice to the Rajasthan government in the matter on the appeal filed by a software engineer, accused of raping a woman on the promise of marriage. The SC further directed the man to deposit Rs 2 lakh as surety for foreign travel. According to the prosecution, the man was booked on rape charges by the Christianganj police station in Ajmer after it was alleged that he met a woman on a matrimonial website and maintained close acquaintance with her for four years on the promise of marriage. Advocate Ashwani Dubey, appearing for the engineer, submitted that the wife was neither an accused nor a party to the case. He said no notice was issued by the Rajasthan HC and yet it passed an order restraining the petitioner. The wife, who is neither accused nor heard, is restrained from travelling abroad, purely to offset a hypothetical apprehension that the husband will abscond, Dubey argued. The plea said the high court, in a violation of the procedural impropriety and without hearing or impleading his wife, who is currently employed in the US, and ignoring the fact that she was not a part of the criminal case, directed her to remain in India. It was also argued that the HC direction was erroneous and violative of the fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution. The petitioner is an Indian passport holder and an Indian citizen and not the citizen of any other country and he will be under the control of Consulate General at USA and there are no chances of his absconding as he is willing to go abroad to earn his livelihood on work visa and therefore, there is no question of his absconding, the plea said. The bench was informed that the petitioner would travel for a specific period and ready to state on oath that he would be available for trial as and when directed.
Rajasthan High Court orders probe into human trafficking charges against Lok Sabha Speakers OSD
JAIPUR: The Rajasthan High Court has ordered a formal investigation into serious allegations of human trafficking involving Rajeev Dutta, an RPS officer currently serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The court has appointed Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Dinesh MN to lead the probe, considering the political sensitivity and gravity of the matter. The case stems from a complaint filed earlier this year by advocate Shekhar Mewada at the Christian Ganj police station in Ajmer. In his complaint, Mewada alleged that Rajeev Dutta, along with Archana Jhala and Dinesh Murzani, was operating a trafficking racket that targeted minor children. According to the complaint, children were trafficked through deception and coercion for the purpose of physical and sexual exploitation. Mewada claimed the accused knowingly harbored the trafficked minors and were directly involved in their abuse. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, no prompt action was taken by the local police. Mewada then approached the High Court, citing political pressure and threats to his life. During the hearing, the court observed that law enforcement appeared reluctant to act due to the involvement of politically influential individuals. It noted that the FIRs filed against the petitioner in Kota, Bundi, and Pali seemed retaliatory, aimed at silencing the complainant and obstructing the original investigation. The court was also informed that although the petitioner complied with police summons, he was not interrogated. On his return to Jaipur, he was allegedly attacked and received life threats. Intervention from the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, and support from a group of advocates reportedly ensured his safety. Taking these concerns seriously, the court instructed that relevant documents from the pending criminal case in the Judicial Magistrates court in Ajmer be made available for review. It further directed that Rajeev Dutta and the other accused be formally added as respondents in the case. ADGP Dinesh MN, who appeared via video conferencing, was asked to be present during future proceedings and provide a detailed response along with case records. Meanwhile, advocate Shekhar Mewada was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants about two months ago. He has blamed Rajeev Dutta for orchestrating the attack and also alleged that multiple false cases have been filed against him in retaliation for pursuing the human trafficking complaint. This is not the first time Rajeev Dutta has been embroiled in controversy. In 2022, Rajasthan Congress MLA Bharat Singh had accused him of misusing official power while serving as OSD to the Lok Sabha Speaker. The MLA had also raised the issue in a letter to the then Director General of Police, Umesh Mishra.

Notice by Ajmer Dargah evading responsibility in case of accidents angers Muslim organisations
JAIPUR: A recent notice issued by the Naziman officer appointed by the state governmentof the Ajmer Sharif Dargah has sparked sharp criticism from several Muslim organizations and members of the public. The notice, dated July 21 and digitally signed by Nazim Mohammad Belal Khan, warns pilgrims about the potential risks posed by old structures within the dargah complex. It further states that the administration will not be legally responsible in case of any accidents. The timing of the notice has intensified the backlash, as preparations are currently underway for the 814th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, an annual event that draws lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad. The Muslim Progressive Federation called the notice shameful and a fall of responsibility. In a strongly worded letter to the Nazim, Federation president Abdul Salam Johar condemned the disclaimer. It is unacceptable to issue such a disclaimer at a place of collective spiritual importance, he wrote. Echoing this sentiment, Rajasthan Muslim Alliance president Mohsin Rashid termed it a dereliction of duty and emphasized that Ajmer Sharif is not a tourist spot but a deeply revered religious site. Such negligence cannot be justified. The notice quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread anger. Many users demanded that the notice be withdrawn and urged the administration to implement immediate safety measures. Some also called on the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs to step in if the Nazim fails to take appropriate action. As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Nazim's office in response to the criticism. Amid growing concerns, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, drawing attention to the deteriorating condition of the world-renowned Ajmer Dargah. The Board has cited serious safety issues and administrative apathy, invoking the Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955. Board General Secretary Mohammad Zafarul Rahim Mujaddidi stated in the letter that the Dargah Committee has not been constituted for the past three years, which has stalled all development and maintenance work at the site. He highlighted several recent incidents as evidence of the shrines worsening state. On July 2, the wall of a hut within the dargah collapsed. On July 15, part of a hall cracked, and plaster fell from several areas. In addition, waterlogging due to monsoon rains has created unsafe conditions for pilgrims. The safety of lakhs of pilgrims is at risk. Urgent government intervention is necessary to ensure structural repairs and administrative accountability, Mujaddidi wrote. The Board alleges that without a functioning Dargah Committee, no upkeep or welfare schemes are being implemented, leaving the shrine and its visitors vulnerable. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah, dedicated to the revered Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, stands as a powerful symbol of Indias Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeba centuries-old tradition of Hindu-Muslim unity. Since the Mughal era, the dargah has held spiritual and cultural significance for people of all faiths. Every year, lakhs of devotees, including from abroad, visit the shrine during the Urs and other occasions. The dargah also made headlines last year when a lower court in Ajmer admitted a petition seeking to declare it a Hindu templean issue that further fueled communal and legal debates.
