Man engulfed in flames walks 600m for help as bystanders film, not aid

A heart-wrenching tale emerged from the Jaipur-Ajmer highway on Friday, where an LPG tanker collided with a truck, triggering a massive explosion. The tragedy claimed 14 lives, engulfed 37 vehicles in flames, and left behind haunting stories of survival attempts. Among them was 32-year-old motor mechanic Radheshyam Choudhary, who walked nearly 600 metres engulfed in flames, seeking help while bystanders filmed the scene instead of aiding him. Radheshyam, employed at National Bearings Company Ltd in Jaipur, had left his home early Friday morning on his motorbike. His routine day turned into a nightmare after the tanker explosion. Disturbing videos circulated online showing a man engulfed in flames, struggling to walk and crying for help amid the chaos. Radheshyams elder brother, Akheram, received a distress call from a stranger around 5:50 a.m., urging him to rush to the Heerapura bus terminal. Accompanied by two neighbours, Akheram hurried to the site and found his brother lying on the road. Witnesses informed him that Radheshyam had walked a considerable distance from the explosion site, desperately seeking assistance. My brother was crying for help as he struggled down the road, but most bystanders simply recorded videos, Akheram told The Times of India . Realising an ambulance would take too long, Akheram and his neighbours drove Radheshyam to Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur. Despite his agony, Radheshyam remained conscious during the journey. He recounted the moments leading to the tragedy: the ground shaking, flames consuming everything, and his desperate attempt to flee. He had even managed to recall his brothers phone number and share it with a stranger who called for help. Medical staff at the hospital admitted Radheshyam, but with 85 per cent burns, his survival was uncertain. We thought he would survive, but his chances were slim. It was a thread that snapped, Akheram said. The incident highlights not only the chaos caused by the explosion but also the indifference of onlookers who chose to film instead of offering help to a man fighting for his life.

'Raat Gayi, Baat Gayi...': Rashid Latif Reacts To His Rant On Sehwag During 2017 Champions Trophy

ICC Champions Trophy: There is no doubt about the fact that the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is the most talked about and most anticipated sports rivalry in the world. One such episode is from the 2017 Champions Trophy when former India opener Virender Sehwag and ex-Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Rashid Latif engaged in a war of words that caught everyone's attention. After India hammered Pakistan by 124 runs in their first group match of the Champions Trophy at Edgbaston, Sehwag had taken to X, erstwhile Twitter, to congratulate the Virat Kohli-led side on the big win, saying Pote ke baad Bete. Koi baat nahi Beta, Well tried! Congratulations Bharat !#BaapBaapHotaHai #INDvPAK. But it didn't go down too well with Rashid, who reacted to Sehwag's post via a Facebook video in which he said, Sehwag has taken a jab at us, and if he had said something to me personally or to someone specific, I might not have responded. You all need to turn the pages of history. We handed all the grand monuments built by our ancestors to India as charity, be it Ajmer Sharif or Nizamuddin Sharif or Taj Mahal. I have a bigger family in India than you do. When asked about his then viral social media confrontation with Sehwag, Rashid said such things happened in the heat of the moment, and should not be related to the present. If I talk about a player a year ago, it cannot be related today. I had made a comment about Virender Sehwag regarding the 2017 Champions Trophy. There are always some comments that directly hit the country, so a reaction was bound to happen, the former Pakistani cricketer told IANS. When Pakistan won, I told him that this is not the kind of cricket that should happen, but there was no comment from his side. It was a positive sign. He talks well. Sometimes things happen in the heat of the moment, but that was back in 2017; Raat gayi, baat gayi (what's done is done), he concluded. If I talk about a player a year ago, it cannot be related today. I had made a comment about Virender Sehwag regarding the 2017 Champions Trophy. There are always some comments that directly hit the country, so a reaction was bound to happen, the former Pakistani cricketer told IANS. Farmers urge Punjab Government to reject Centre's agricultural marketing policy

CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab Government has been categorically urged by farmer unions in the state to reject the draft National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing, describing it as detrimental to Punjabs farm-based economy. They alleged that the draft is an attempt to reintroduce contentious provisions from the repealed farm laws, which triggered the 13-month-long farmer agitation at the borders of Delhi in 2020-21. During a three-hour meeting between representatives from 15 farmer unions and Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, farmers raised concerns about the policy. They argued it promotes privatisation in food procurement, potentially leading to monopolistic practices in agriculture. Joginder Singh Ugrahan, president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), the largest farmer union in Punjab, criticised the policy, calling it a covert attempt to reintroduce the contentious provisions of the three farm laws. Other farmer leaders, including Balbir Singh Rajewal, Dr Darshan Pal, Ruldu Singh Mansa, and Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala, echoed similar concerns, urging the state government to carefully examine the policy before responding to the Centre. They emphasised that the interests of Punjabs farmers must be safeguarded. Khudian assured farmer unions that an all-party meeting would be convened to discuss the policy before Punjab submits its response to the Central Government. The state government is concerned as this policy could have serious implications for the state and its farmers. We want to analyse and consult on every aspect of the draft policy shared by the Centre, he said. Khudian also mentioned that agriculture experts and other stakeholders would be consulted to ensure no aspect of the draft is overlooked. He appealed to farmers to submit their suggestions and comments to the Agriculture Department. Farmers block trains in Punjab for three hours as part of their 'Rail Roko' protest, 31 trains affected Punjab, initially required to respond to the policy by 10 December, has sought an extension of three weeks to conduct a thorough review. The policy is expected to be discussed during the Winter Session of the Punjab Assembly, scheduled for the second week of January 2024. Dr Sukhpal Singh, chairman of the Punjab Farmers and Farm Workers Commission, and Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, attended the meeting alongside Agriculture Department officials. Earlier, Khudian held consultations with senior officers on the draft policy, emphasising the need for stakeholder input. The draft, released on 25 November, comes amidst ongoing farmer protests at Shambhu and Khanauri borders, where demonstrators are demanding a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and addressing other issues. Both ruling and opposition parties in Punjab have rejected the policy. Khudian described it as potentially anti-farmer and anti-Punjab, while Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, accused the Centre of attempting to reintroduce elements from the repealed farm laws. Farm economists have also expressed concerns that the policy could pave the way for greater corporate involvement in agricultural marketing. They warned it might weaken agricultural produce marketing committees, diluting their role and increasing privatisation. We vow to oppose the policy tooth and nail, Ugrahan declared, reflecting the united stance of Punjabs farmer unions against the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing. The divine connection of Sufi music

BENGALURU: In a world that often feels fragmented, art serves as a bridge to something greater a higher power of sorts. Few art forms encapsulate this transcendence better than Sufi music. Bengaluru witnessed this ethereal connection as the KM Sufi Ensemble, part of maestro AR Rahmans prestigious KM Music Conservatory, enthralled the audience with the Kun Faya Kun Concert, bringing the 700-year-old Sufi musical tradition of qawwali to the stage recently. Sufi music is powerful and moving with its universal themes of love, devotion and self-discovery. We wanted to share this transformative experience with audiences, transcending cultural boundaries, shares Jyoti Nair, Head of Preparatory Programmes at the KM Music Conservatory. Marking the ensembles debut performance in Bengaluru, the concert was presented by the Indian Music Experience Museum (IME) in collaboration with the Prestige Centre for Performing Arts. The KM Sufi Ensemble was born out of Rahmans deep love for Sufi music and its message of harmony and brotherhood. Nair explains, Our journey began with an exploration of Indias vast musical heritage, inspired by legends like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Guided by our mentors, weve delved into the ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of Sufi music. Each performance is a labour of love and devotion, aiming to invoke unity, compassion, and inner peace. The ensemble, comprising 16 musicians, blends traditional qawwali pieces with contemporary elements, creating a profound connection between heritage and innovation. To remain authentic, we engage with traditional Sufi scholars and texts. However, by using harmonies which are essentially part of the Western music tradition, we also incorporate contemporary elements, balancing innovation with respect for tradition. Our approach ensures that the essence of Sufi music remains intact while appealing to modern audiences, says Nair. Audiences were immersed in renditions of timeless compositions like Kun Faya Kun which was picturised in Imtiaz Alis Rockstar, alongside iconic traditional qawwalis such as Man Kunto Maula and Dum Mast Qalandar. Among the many highlights of the evening were Khwaja Mere Khwaja which was dediacted to the revered Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer Sharif, and was later immortalised in Jodhaa Akbar by Rahmans composition. Featuring unique instrumental arrangements, vocal harmonies and storytelling, the performance is meant to take the audience to the realm of complete ecstasy, sublimity, peace within and without, along with an increased self-awareness all ingredients of Sufism, she highlights. What sets Sufi music apart is its ability to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. Its themes of spiritual longing resonate universally, offering listeners a sense of connection and unity. We hope the audience experiences a sense of connection and unity through our music while resonating with our message of love, compassion, and forgiveness, shares Nair.

PM promises tap water to all homes

JAIPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (PKC-ERCP) in Jaipur. The ceremony for the project also marked the completion of one year of the Bhajanlal Sharma-led BJP government in Rajasthan. During the event, the agreement between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh for the ambitious project was unveiled. The Central government has designated the ERCP as a national project and committed to bear 90% of the total project cost. The remaining 10% will be shared equally by the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments. As part of the foundation-laying ceremony, Modi poured water from replicas of the Parvati, Kalisindh, and Chambal rivers into a pot, named the Ram Setu Kalash. He announced that Rajasthan would benefit significantly from the agreement, with tap water expecting to reach 100% of the states households. He noted that the water ministry is overseeing the initiative. Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 24 infrastructure projects worth over Rs 46,300 crore, spanning sectors such as electricity, water, roads, and railways. In his address, Modi attacked the previous Congress government in the state and held it responsible for delays in the ERCP project. Instead of resolving the issue, Congress kept fueling water disputes between states. People will certainly question Congress about why they failed to finalise the ERCP agreement, he said. The PM praised former CM Vasundhara Raje, acknowledging her role in initiating the ERCP during her second term and highlighted her efforts in drafting the framework for connecting the Parvati, Kalisindh, and Chambal rivers. Recalling Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Jaswant Singh, Modi said, When I was chief minister, both leaders came to Gujarat to discuss providing Narmada water to Rajasthan. Because of that initiative, districts like Churu, Jhunjhunu, Hanumangarh, Jalore, and Barmer are now benefitting from Narmada water. Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav stated that the 20-year-old water dispute between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh has been resolved. He described the ERCP as a boon for both states. Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma echoed this sentiment, terming the event historic. The Congress, however, dismissed the event as a political stunt. The Congress claims that due to political animosity, the BJP kept the ERCP on hold in five years of the Ashok Gehlot government. Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara accused the Central government of misleading the people on the ERCP. Gehlot also alleged that the BJP had compromised Rajasthans interests. The PKC-ERCP is directly linked to a population of 3.45 crore across 21 districts in Rajasthan. These districts include Jaipur, Kota, Jhalawar, Baran, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Tonk, Dausa, Karauli, Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Gangapur City, Beawar, Kekri, Dudu, Kotputli-Behror, Khairthal-Tijara, Deeg, and Jaipur Rural. The project aims to alleviate water crisis in eastern Rajasthan, providing drinking water to households and irrigation water to farmers, thereby benefiting both urban and rural populations in the region.

Independent Indian ad agencies that stand tall a decade later

Independent advertising agencies have always been at the forefront of creativity, shaping societal narratives and influencing cultural trends through innovative campaigns. Their unique perspectives and agility have helped them connect with audiences, build brand loyalty, and drive consumer behaviour. In recent years, however, the advertising landscape has undergone significant transformations. The rise of digital platforms, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), and shifts in consumer behaviour have introduced new challenges for these agencies. Many have struggled to adapt to the rapid technological advancements and the increasing demand for data-driven strategies, leading to a wave of closures among once-prominent firms. For instance, Barton F. Graf, a renowned independent agency known for its quirky and creative campaigns, closed its doors in 2019. Similarly, Wexley School for Girls celebrated for its unconventional approach to advertising, ceased operations in the same year. The Indian advertising landscape has seen the closure of notable agencies like Wieden+Kennedy India and J. Walter Thompson, reflecting the challenges faced by independent creative agencies amidst rising competition and evolving industry dynamics. These closures highlight the difficulties faced by independent agencies in maintaining relevance and financial stability. Despite these challenges, many agencies continue to thrive by integrating new technologies with traditional creative processes. Launch of canal project in eastern Rajasthan sparks political debate

JAIPUR: The much-delayed, much-discussed and controversial Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (PKC-ERCP) will finally begin in Jaipur on December 17. According to the state BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the event where the foundation stone for this project will be laid. The project, which aims to address the water needs of most of east Rajasthan, will begin on the same day, marking a milestone in regional development. State BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj has confirmed that Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Madhya Pradesh government a month ago. Union Jal Shakti Minister and officials from Madhya Pradesh will also participate in the program. This is a significant project that will benefit many districts. While an MoU was signed earlier, now a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) will be finalized in the presence of the Prime Minister. Everyone needs to approach this positively, Bhardwaj said. The Bhajan Lal-led government in Rajasthan is nearing its first anniversary, and this development is being touted as a major achievement. However, the opposition Congress has raised questions over the project's transparency. Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticized the BJP government for allegedly keeping details of the agreement under wraps. Gehlot stated, There is no provision for farmers' welfare in the PKC-ERCP scheme. For the first time in my political life, I am witnessing an agreement between two governments being kept secret. The public deserves to know the details. He further accused the BJP of renaming the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) to PKC-ERCP and questioned the new agreement involving the Central Government, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Will this agreement safeguard Rajasthan's interests? Who benefits moreRajasthan or Madhya Pradesh? Why is this agreement being hidden from the public? he asked. The PKC-ERCP project is expected to provide drinking water, irrigation, and industrial water to 21 districts of Rajasthan. Beneficiary districts include Jhalawar, Baran, Kota, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, and others. While the BJP hails the project as a game-changer for the state, the opposition views it as a potential compromise on Rajasthan's water rights. With the foundation-laying ceremony on the horizon, political tensions are escalating, and all eyes are now on Jaipur to witness how this ambitious project will shape the state's future.

Petitions against historic mosques driven by fear of India's growth: Tourism Minister Shekhawat

NEW DELHI: Responding to a question on petitions challenging the existence of historic centuries-old mosques, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Thursday asserted that powers frightened by the growth of India are behind this and an investigation is required to uncover the mindset. Definitely filing a PIL (public interest litigation) in democratic India is a privilegeof a person, I cant prevent a person? However, on these issues, behind all these, power and mindset is on the job. It needs to be looked into, and investigated. Some people are scared of progress and the speed of growth of the country, said the minister. The minister further added that the Government has been exposing these kinds of people and preserving the cultural heritage. The Government is working and making efforts with seriousness to preserve the heritage of the country so that it remains a matter of pride for coming generations, Shekhawat said. Shekhawat was speaking on the achievements of the culture and tourism ministries in the last 10 years at a press conference. He was asked specifically about lawsuits against Taj Mahal, Delhis Jama Masjid and the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer. According to the claim made in petitions, these historic sites were built over Hindu temples. At the press conference, Shekhawat spoke about the transformative strides in tourism, detailing infrastructure developments, global promotional campaigns, and projects aimed at enhancing Indias cultural and tourism landscape. He said that the over 10-year tenure of the Narendra Modi Government revolves around a relentless pursuit of realising the visions of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas (development of all) and Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi (development with preservation of heritage). Shekhawat stated that intensified efforts are being made to make tourism an integral part of building a Viksit Bharat. A total of 76.17 million jobs have been created in the tourism sector, he added. The minister also said that domestic tourist numbers have seen a remarkable increase of 95.64 percent since 2014. Indias ranking in the global travel and tourism development index has improved from 65 to 39. Over Rs 6,800 crore has been spent on destination development projects. Projects worth Rs 3,295.76 crore have recently been approved for development of lesser-known tourism sites in various states. The e-tourist visa facility has proven to be very beneficial for the visitors, the minister said.

CPM criticises temple lawsuits, Centre's indifference to Kerala landslide relief, repression of farmers

NEW DELHI: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) on Monday expressed serious concern over the spate of lawsuits being filed and entertained in lower courts claiming that there were temples where centuries-old mosques stand at present. It is unfortunate that the Supreme Court has not intervened to put a stop to such litigation by upholding the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, l991. The 2019 five-member Bench judgment of the Supreme Court on the Ayodhya dispute categorically upheld the validity of the law and its enforcement. Given this direction, it is incumbent on the apex court to intervene to put a stop to legal proceedings, which are violative of the Act, read the statement issued by the Polit Bureau. The statement further said that after Varanasi and Mathura, in Sambhal, a survey was ordered of a 16th-century mosque by a lower court and it had resulted in violence in which four Muslim youth have been killed. The party also mentioned a similar petition that was filed in the civil court in Ajmer regarding the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. On situation in neighbouring Bangladesh, the party reiterated that the Bangladesh interim government and authorities must ensure the safety and full protection of religious minorities. The administration seems to be ignoring the activities of the Islamist fundamentalist forces in this regard, the CPM said. At the same time, the Polit Bureau decried the efforts of the BJP-RSS and Hindutva outfits in India, which are seeking to whip up passions by incendiary propaganda. Such an approach will not help the interests of the minorities in Bangladesh, said the party. The Polit Bureau further called upon secular and democratic forces in both countries to come out strongly against all forms of communalism which will harm the interests of the people on both sides of the border. It alsk sharply criticized Government's callous indifference in denying Kerala the rightful assistance for the victims of the devastating landslide disaster in Wayanad. Despite the state's urgent plea for Rs 214.68 crore in immediate relief and Rs 2,319.1 crore for comprehensive recovery and reconstruction, the Centre has failed to approve the funds even after four months. The refusal to classify the landslide as a calamity of severe nature and the unwillingness to waive loans for the affected families also reflect a deeply unjust and inhumane approach, undermining the principles of federal support in times of crisis, the CPM stated The Polit Bureau also called upon the Centre to immediately release the funds claimed by the state government. Through the statement, the CPM also condemned the police 'repression on the farmers' of Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Around 150 leaders and activists of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and other organisations have been jailed, the party said. The arrested farmers have started a hunger strike in jail. House arrests of many activists are going on. The attack on women who have been in the forefront of the struggle by the police is shocking...The CPI(M) fully supports this struggle, demands that repression must be stopped forthwith and the government must accept and implement the just demands of the struggle, said the party. The statement was issued after the pilot bureau meeting held in New Delhi. In the meeting, the Polit Bureau discussed a Draft of the Political Resolution to be taken up at the 24th Congress to be held in the first week of April 2025. Based on the discussion in Polit Bureau, the Draft will be placed for adoption in the next meeting of the Central Committee to be held in January in Kolkata.

Shikha Mukerjee | Digs and gigs: Ajmer Sharif & archaeology of Hindutva

It is a snowball gathering speed. Or may-be its a mudslide gaining momentum. Or maybe its a virus. Whatever it is, it seems to be birthing more and more litigation across mostly North India. It certainly seems that keeping the country on the boil is back in favour as a tried, tested, easy and successful strategy for the Hindu Right, led by the BJP and the nearly 100-year-old voluntary social service outfit RSS. On a mission to hoist India to the pinnacle of glory by reorganising history, chronically litigious Hindu outfits like the International Hari Har Sena Sri Ram Sena, Hindu Sena and a bevy of lawyers and fervent petitioners have filed a slew of cases, in war mode in district courts across North India. The demand is straightforward: demolish and dig up 30,000 sites where believers are certain temples were built over and mosques established. By adding Ajmer Sharif, the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, that needs to be dug up to reportedly uncover a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Hindu Right has outdone itself. Among the devout, it is usual to place chadars, a sheet, on the grave of the Sufi mystic. Among those who have done so in recent times are Indias Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tens of thousands of devotees from all across the world. When Mr Modi sent the chadar, duly captured on camera, it was believed he was trying to appease Muslim voters ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Others, however, have prayed and visited Sufi shrines, including the Fatehpur Sikri dargah near Agra, like former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his partner Carla Bruni, who prayed for a child and indeed had one. Hindutva or Hindu fundamentalism, or Hindu revival though why something that flourished for millennia needs rev-ival is a mystery, because it never faded, verged on extinction, though it was in danger of being eclipsed by Buddhism around and after Emperor Ashoka's times. But in twenty-first century In-dia, some people believe it needs kindling to keep it burning. Reviving temples suspected or believed to have been destroyed is the new and supplementary agenda of Hindutva. A new archaeology has been established in service of Hindutva. Thanks to former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, the starter or spark or kindling was his 2022 decision to overturn the 1991 law, which sought to prohibit conversion of any place of worship and to provide for the maintenance of the religious character of any place of worship as it existed on the 15th day of August 1947, otherwise known as the Places of Worship Act. While the law was meant to be tamper proof, the former Chief Justice, who seemed to fuse his piety with his professional responsibilities, decided that digging into the foundations of Varanasis Gyanvapi Masjid to uncover a Shiva linga was perfectly in order. The outcome of the reversal and its consequences are four dead and several injured in UPs Sambhal over a dispute on what lies below the Shahi Jama Masjid. The claim by a mahant was followed up by a lawyer, who is involved in other places of worship disputes, starting with the Gyanvapi, Mathuras Shahi Idgah Mosque and the Sambhal dispute. Having retired and thus free to presumably pursue his pieties in private, instead of in front of a camera that turned his devotions into a public spectacle, the retired Chief Justice can now watch from the sidelines the consequences of his decision. The Hindu Right in pursuit of Hindu revival, aided and abetted by a judiciary that brandishes God to support its decisions that are fundamentally flawed, as in the Ayodhya land dispute, is now part of the archaeology of Hindutva. To legitimise the digs and gigs, advocates and various litigants have a judiciary that is willing to overturn the law to enable what the law said could not be done. So, claims can be confidently made that legal proceedings will progress faster than a bullet train and that justice, as defined by them, will be done. Hindutva archaeology is essential to the project of de-Islamisation, as Mujibur Rahman calls it in his recent book, Shikwah e Hind. Digs and gigs are the window dressing required to legitimise the supplementary project to avoid committing what the apex court led by former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi described as a heinous crime, of mosque demolition in the Ayodhya case. The law and the taxpayer are vulnerable to being used as a tool of cynical exploitation of sentiment since the Hindu revivalists are essentially a bunch of freeloaders ra-ther than philanthropists or zealous crusaders. With the courts turning into the revivalists fa-vourite tool, the changes proposed to the law on Waqf properties will certainly add to the thousands of cases that are already in the judicial system over land and other disputes relating to Waqf-administered properties. The choice for the Narendra Modi government is simple: it can support the supplementary project of mosque demolition-temple rebuilding and do so by abandoning the Constitution and its basic structure of which secularism is a part. Or, he can rein in the Hindu Right and demolish the supplementary project. He can follow the route he has adopted on the Waqf issue or duck responsibility, albeit temporarily. If that is a choice too stark for the Prime Minister, he can resort to playing cat and mouse with the secularism project and the supplementary project of Hindutva. Legalising the demolition of Muslim places of worship on the pretext of unverified claims to temples buried under them is a political problem; it is not a problem that the judiciary can solve. The choice and decision that the Modi government has to make is simple. It can either amend the 1991 Places of Worship Act and open the floodgates to the new archaeology that Hindutva is trying to establish; or, it can, in Parliament, in this Win-ter Session, unequivocally declare its commitment to upholding the 1991 law. Any waffling on this as a government is unacceptable. Flawed and weak as the attempt may have been, from within the ranks of the BJP there was a move to throw out the words secular and socialist added through the 42nd Amendment in 1976. The Supreme Court, currently headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has thrown out the petition. It does not mean that another petition will not be filed at a different time to which the apex courts response could be different. The Places of Worship Act reversal is a case in point; mischief can be made whenever there is a convergence of ideas, ideologies, politics and petitioners.

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra Mosque: A Unique Blend of Hindu, Jain, and Islamic-Architecture in Ajmer

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra Mosque in Ajmer is one of the oldest and most remarkable mosques in India, known for its exceptional blend of Hindu, Jain, and Islamic architectural styles. This historic monument is a stunning example of the early Indo-Islamic architecture, reflecting the cultural and religious fusion that defines much of India's history. A Rich History of Transformation The history of Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra is as fascinating as its architecture. Some sources suggest that the building was originally a Jain temple dedicated to the celebration of Panch Kalyanak, built by Seth Viramdev Kala in the 6th century. Other historical inscriptions indicate it was a Sanskrit college during the Chauhan dynasty. However, when Muhammad Ghori and his general, Qutb-ud-din-Aibak, captured Ajmer, they transformed the structure into a mosque. A distinctive seven-arched wall was added to the faade, and the new structure was decorated with Islamic calligraphy. The building was designed by the architect Abu Bakr of Herat, with Afghan managers overseeing construction. Interestingly, Hindu masons and laborers played a significant role in creating the ornate details that retain traditional Indian architectural features. Later, during the Sultanate period, Iltutmish, a successor of Delhis sultans, further enriched the mosque by adding a prominent seven-arched screen. Architecture: A Masterpiece of Cultural Fusion Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra's architecture is a testament to the blending of different cultural influences. The mosque's layout is square-shaped, covering an area of 1,036 feet, and it is surrounded by 344 pillars arranged symmetrically across the courtyard. These pillars, which are finely carved, are a fusion of Hindu and Jain temple architecture, yet they support the Islamic design elements of the mosque. The southern entrance of the mosque is marked by a magnificent seven-arch screen made of yellow limestone. The central arch rises to about 60 feet, surrounded by six smaller arches. The arches are not only structural but also allow daylight to fill the complex, a feature inspired by Arab mosques. The walls are adorned with intricate Arabic calligraphy, including Kufic and Tugra inscriptions, and verses from the Quran. These features reflect the influence of Islamic architecture from regions like Ghazni, Turkistan, and Persia. Inside, the mosque measures 200 feet by 175 feet, with a large central hall supported by arcade pillars. These pillars are intricately carved, showcasing the craftsmanship of Indian masons, while the wide bases narrow as they rise, a distinctive feature of Indian temple architecture. The mosque itself is located in the western part of the complex, surrounded by 124 pillars and crowned with ten domes. The sacred space, which includes the mihraba niche in the wall facing Meccais elegantly carved from white marble. A Testament to Artistic Excellence The Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra Mosque isa unique symbol of Indias rich cultural heritage. The combination of red sandstone architecture, the meticulous craftsmanship of Indian masons, Jain sculptures, Islamic Arabic designs, and Indian latticework creates a unique blend that stands out among Indias historical monuments. It is no surprise that this mosque has been managed by the Archaeological Survey of India since Indias independence, preserving its significance for generations to come. Today, the mosque remains a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors who are captivated by its historical significance and architectural beauty.
