JAIPUR: In a sudden but significant step to tackle the escalating air pollution crisis, the Bhajan Lal-led Rajasthan government has shut down 3,000 mines and industries in Alwar and Bharatpur districts, according to an order by the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board. Additionally, all construction activities in these areas have been halted. Along with this, construction work going on in these areas has also been stopped. The decision comes in the wake of a sharp decline in air quality across the National Capital Region (NCR), including Delhi, where air pollution has reached critical levels since Monday. Being part of the NCR, Alwar and Bharatpur are facing similar challenges. Rising Pollution Levels in Alwar and Bhiwadi The pollution in Alwar has reached alarming levels, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 295 on Monday. The situation is even more grave in Bhiwadi, where the AQI soared to a hazardous 442, far exceeding the severe threshold of 401. To address the crisis, the government has implemented the highest level of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP 4) in these districts, imposing strict restrictions on industrial and construction activities. The fourth phase (GRAP 4) of the Graded Response Action Plan has been implemented in Alwar and Bharatpur districts which fall in NCR. The Rajasthan Pollution Control Board issued orders to enforce these measures on Tuesday morning. Statewide Pollution Concerns The air quality in several other districts of Rajasthan has also deteriorated, with AQI levels ranging from poor to severe. This decline is attributed largely to stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana. Districts such as Jhunjhunu, Bikaner, Churu, and Hanumangarh are particularly affected. Residents in these districts are experiencing significant discomfort due to pollution. A thick layer of smog has blanketed the skies, reducing visibility throughout the day. Many people have reported symptoms such as eye irritation, difficulty in breathing, coughing, and runny noses.
Muslim poets recite Urdu version of Ramayana
Jaipur: In a unique event leading up to Diwali that has been fostering goodwill for over a decade, Muslim poets in Bikaner recite an Urdu version of the Hindu epic Ramayana that was composed 89 years ago. Dr Ziya Ul Hasan Quadri, an Urdu teacher and poet, who along with two other Muslim poets recited the Urdu Ramayana at a function on Sunday said that the objective of the event is to give a positive message of harmony and brotherhood. Paryatan Lekhak Sangh and Mehfil-e-Adab jointly organise the event 'Urdu Ramayan Vaachan' every year in Bikaner since 2012. Quadri said that the couplets vividly describe scenes from Ramayan like Lord Ram's exile, victory against Ravan and his return to Ayodhya, capturing the emotions d epicted in the epic which is greatly appreciated by audiences in the city. Maulvi Badshah Hussain Rana Lakhnavi of Bikaner composed the poetic version of Ramayana in Urdu language in 1935 for a competition organised by the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on the birth anniversary of Tulsidas. It won the gold medal following which the erstwhile ruler of Bikaner, Maharaja Ganga Singh, organised a ceremony to listen to Rana Lakhnavi's version. Tej Bahadur Sapru presented the gold medal to Rana Lakhnavi on behalf of the BHU in this programme. The poets, who take part in the recitation in Rajasthan's Bikaner before Diwali, now want to take the practice at the national level and plan to organise the recitation programme in the national capital next year. Things have drastically changed from the time when it was composed. Today, communal harmony is under threat. Lord Rama is revered by all and belongs to all, but today he has been limited which is disappointing, Quadri said. He said that Muslim poets recite the Urdu Ramayan and the audience comprises of both Hindus and Muslims. Quadri said that initially, the event used to be organised in the open but later the venue changed and now it is held in a hotel so that things are well arranged. He said that Maulvi Badshah Hussain Rana Lakhnavi worked for Maharaja Ganga Singh from 1913 to 1919, during which he translated orders issued by the Mughal rulers from Persian to Urdu. In 1920, he was appointed as the teacher at Dungar College by Ganga Singh. DRYSRHU developing organically grown custard apple seeds sourced from tribal areas
Visakhapatnam : Custard apples are believed to have originated in the Andes mountains of South America. These are cultivated in tropical regions with high altitudes. Andhra Pradesh has gained a significant space in its cultivation. Known for their rich fibre content and being a good source of vitamins and minerals, custard apples are recognised for their potential to bolster immunity, reduce inflammation and contribute to overall eye and heart health. In Andhra Pradesh, Balanagar custard apples and NMK gold custard apples are cultivated. The NMK gold custard apple seeds originate from Maharashtra, while the Balanagar seeds are from the horticultural research station in Anantapur. The Central Institute for Arid Horticulture Research Institute in Bikaner is developing organically grown custard apple seeds sourced from tribal areas. The Dr YSR Horticultural University has developed organically grown custard apple seeds in tribal areas. K Subramanyam, principal scientist and head of the horticultural research station in Mahanandi, told Deccan Chronicle, There are issues with NMK gold custard apples. Farmers in Maharashtra are hesitant to cultivate this crop. Consumers are comparing NMK gold custard apples with the Balanagar variety and are unwilling to purchase the former. In response to this challenge, the research station is gathering organic custard apple seeds grown in the agency region and conducting experiments on them. The Horticultural University has been assessing and analysing various custard apple genotypes. Such research is essential for identifying high-yielding, superior-quality varieties suitable for cultivation in AP and other pertinent regions. A comprehensive study conducted at the horticulture research station in Anantapur scrutinised many custard apple genotypes from 2001 to 2008. The findings revealed that a hybrid Blanagar custard apple demonstrated the highest cumulative yield over the years. Furthermore, an additional study focused on the biochemical characterisation of custard apple selections, revealed substantial variability among genotypes concerning traits such as total soluble solids, pH and total sugars. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential for improved cultivation and yield. The cultivation of custard apples has emerged as a thriving industry in the agency. The prevalence of custard apple baskets, particularly in Paderu and Anantgiri mandals, signifies a burgeoning market. The agency's approximately 250 acres of land are dedicated to custard apple cultivation. The fruit's popularity among tribal farmers, who play a pivotal role in its cultivation, can be attributed to its ease of cultivation and the significant financial benefits. These farmers in villages such as Vantlamamidi, Salugu, Devapuram, Ainada, Kasipatnam, Kothur, Damuku, Valasi, Pinakota and Pedakota are the backbone of the industry, getting financial benefits by selling the stuff locally and to traders from the plain areas. Custard apples from the agency are distributed to Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam, Tuni, Kakinada and Vijayawada and are sent to West Bengal. The price of one kilo of custard apples ranges from `80 to `150, depending on their size and quality.

Election Commission Reschedules Polling Dates for Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir Assemblies
Chandigarh: T he Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced changes to the polling schedule for the Haryana Assembly elections and the counting of votes for both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana Assemblies. Originally set for October 1, the polling day in Haryana has been moved to October 5. Additionally, the vote counting for both regions, initially planned for October 4, will now occur on October 8. This decision was made to respect the voting rights and traditions of the Bishnoi community. The Bishnoi community observes the Asoj Amavasya festival to honor their Guru Jambheshwar, with celebrations taking place in their native village Mukam in Rajasthan. The festival, which falls on October 2 this year, leads many Bishnoi families from Sirsa, Fatehabad, and Hisar to travel to Rajasthan, potentially preventing them from voting on the original polling date. The ECI received a request from the National President of the All India Bishnoi Mahasabha, Bikaner, seeking the rescheduling of the polling date. This adjustment ensures that the Bishnoi community members can exercise their voting rights while participating in their traditional festival. In the past, the Commission has similarly adjusted election dates to accommodate various community traditions. For instance, the Punjab Assembly Elections in 2022 were postponed by a week to allow devotees to travel to Varanasi for Guru Ravidas Jayanti. The 2022 Manipur Assembly elections saw a date change to respect Christian Sunday prayers, and the Rajasthan Assembly elections in 2023 were rescheduled to avoid clashing with Devuthani Ekadashi, a significant day for mass weddings in Rajasthan. Similarly, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections in 2012 were adjusted to accommodate Barawafat. The revised polling date will also address concerns about a potential six-day holiday, allowing voters to take just one day off on September 30, 2024. Haryana Assembly polls rescheduled to October 5 from October 1: EC
The Election Commission on Saturday deferred the Haryana assembly poll date to October 5 from October 1, keeping in mind a centuries-old festival of the Bishnoi community. The counting of votes for Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana assembly polls will now be held on October 8 instead of October 4, the poll body said. It said the decision has been taken to honour both the voting rights and traditions of the Bishnoi community, which has upheld a 300-400-year-old practice in remembrance of their Guru Jambheshwar. The EC had received a representation from the national president of All India Bishnoi Mahasabha, Bikaner, Rajasthan for rescheduling the date for the Haryana assembly elections. He said generations of families from Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana visit their native village Mukam in Rajasthan on 'amavas' in the month of 'Asoj' for the annual festival in Bikaner in the memory of Guru Jambheshwar. This year, the festival falls on October 2 and thousands of Bishnoi families residing i
